Hi Guys,
New laptop Dell Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1 was bought in November 2016.
It worked fine during certain period; however, rather weird issue with sound started occurring. It disappears randomly. For example, sound can disappear during Skype call (the main purpose of laptop usage). It disappears almost completely; it is very hard to hear something. In the event of regular Skype call (when sound is present), you can hear your own voice with some extra noise.

Several scenarios were performed:
1) Reinstalled drivers from official Dell website;
2) Unchecked the “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” (speakers -> properties -> advanced)
3) Selected “do nothing” in Sounds -> Communications
4) Driver was changed to Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from Dell website
5) Driver was changed to standard Microsoft one

Reinstalled drivers in different order

1) Reinstalled Windows 10 using the recovery disk from Dell support website
2) Installed drivers according to the “Installation order” section at

Sound disappearing frequency is random, from one week to 1.5 months.
Then sound can appear in one of the following cases:
1) By itself, without any action
2) Reboot
3) Reinstalling audio drivers
4) Changing sample rate from 24 bits to 16 bits in speakers properties.

The issue seem to be similar with the following one:
However, the suggestions didn’t help me to resolve the issue.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

When an issue is not resolved by re-installing the OS, that is a pretty good indication that the problem is caused by hardware. However, if the issue did not reappear until weeks after the OS reinstallation, then can't tell if it is a software or hardware problem.

In the thread referenced, celtic_mist reported fixing it with the Reaktek 2.81 driver. He linked to a third party site, however that is the driver which is directly available from Realtek's site, if you want to try it.

There are additional suggestions in the Recent Issues FAQ, under Inspiron (13") 53xx & 73xx, Issue 2, but that was an issue with only the speakers, not headphones., and it occurred much more frequently than yours does, so might not apply to your situation.

Hello. I have a few questions. 1 - The document contains no errors? (). The specification contains the M2 card support. It's true? You can photograph the slot? 2 - There open the case and installed SSD drive and memory, then lose the warranty?

This has been asked before.  M.2 SSD support is in the 7000 series - not the 5000 series.
Yes, there is an M.2 slot for a WLAN card - but not for a solid state drive, as in the 7000 series.

This unit comes with 4 gb ram. Can I get one 4gb stick to match and install? Also looking for a 250 gb ssd. Preferably from Dell if the price is good. Thoughts anyone?

I'm trying to update my firmware on my laptop but whenever I open the .exe file and extract it, it opens to this. If I try to do anything I am prompted for a password.

Laptops rarely--almost never need firmware updates or driver updates. Any updates should come directly from Dell Support--sign up for notifications. Drivers are customized by Dell so only Dell drivers should be used.

If it's not working out of the box, contact Dell to return the system for replacement.  It makes no sense to spend the time troubleshooting and repairing a faulty brand new system.  Have it replaced immediately.

First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong place, I am new to these forums.
I want to use Windows 8.1 as my main operating system on my Dell Inspiron 13 5368 laptop. Windows 8.1 installs just fine, and the drivers are all there, but I cannot get the touchscreen to work. When I go into the System control panel, it says that "No Pen or Touch input is available for this Display". The touchscreen works just fine on Windows 10, but I cannot use Windows 10 due to my software not supporting it. Plus, I have a Win 8.1 Pro license, and I would like to use it.
There don't seem to be any drivers for the touchscreen, so I am a bit lost. Is there a way to get the touchscreen working, or am I forced to go the Linux route? Thanks!

I have owned this laptop 2 Days. Was a gift from my mom.
Here is the issue:
The PC is running windows 10 home:
When I received the PC I installed the Windows 10 Anniversary update.
I set it up. That said I began installing some of my apps.
I set my POWER SETTINGS to have the Computer go into SLEEP mode when I close the lid.
OK. I did that on my way home from My Meeting  where I used it for over 2 hours.
When I opened the laptop when I got home NOTHING...Hit the Power switch...NOTHING...
Finally....I tried holding the power switch and the VOLUME switch and it FINALLY started up in DIAGNOSTIC MODE.
It says these tests would take 4 hours?? EXIT FAST: IT was already 11pm ....The computer restarted....OK...that's good.
Went to support page and had it check MEMORY, HARD DRIVE and Processor: ALL GOOD.
INSTALLED software to customize DRIVER installation to what needed to be updated:
Graphics driver and Chipset Driver installed. Great...
Tried the laptop...restarted, closed the lid--opened it....instant on WOOHOO....
Closed the lid and WENT to BED.
This morning OPENED THE LID NOTHING....NO STAR UP. Push Power button...NOTHING
HOLD power button: NOTHING....PLUG IN... Let it sit.....push power button NOTHING...
Then: a few minutes more...Started FINALLY.
QUESTION: WHY Doesn't  the computer start after a LONG sleep? WEIRD.
I thought the advantage of windows 10 was instant on??
Start Splaining: SOMEONE please or this is going back.

Hello!My T420 have latest BIOS, latest Windows 10 updates and drivers, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS kernel and updates. Randomly my sound output is disappeared :Windows 10, there is a red cross on volume gauge, clicking on it calls standard wizard of resolving drivers problems, it's doing some magic and asks for reboot. After reboot all works fine, but after sleep, reboot or shutdown it occurs Ubuntu in sound manager sound output reverts into fictive output, no sound, no volume meter, in lspci device list there is no intel hda output device. After several reset, it dissappears and also all works fine but again, same as in windows it can occurs again.Please help me, thanks in advance.

I have modified the setting of my BIOS and in the screen boot i select UEFI BOOT - USB NIC (IPv4)
After i have the scrren whit this info :

I have a brand new Inspiron 13 5368 (arrived less than six hours ago as of this writing) and the speakers don't appear to work at all.  I've rebooted, disabled Intel Display Audio, and updated the device driver (and subsequently rebooted three more times), all to no effect.  I can get audio through the headphone jack no problem.  I've gone into the BIOS to confirm that audio is enabled (it is) and into diagnostics to run a speaker test (I heard nothing).
My thinking is that that last thing is the important part, and the speaker test not working indicates that, well, the speakers aren't working--they're defective, or got damaged during shipping.  Does that sound right, or have I missed something?

Andrew, that's correct -- the speakers are either damaged or disconnected, if no sound is heard during the test called ePSA "perform quick audio check". It's a hardware test and not susceptible to problems that might otherwise be caused by the audio driver, mis-configuration, or Windows.

I have bought an Inspiron 5368 last August 2016. It was working fine. However, yesterday the Speaker Volume suddenly fades and becomes very quiet when listening to audio.
It is very annoying. I have to restart the laptop to make it loud again. Even with a restart the sound fades again once I start playing audio.
I have tried solutions in the FAQ:
but none proved a solution.
Is there not a concrete fix for this? This is not good.

Have you been able to determine if there is a specific time delay associated with the fading?
Does the orientation of the speakers have any effect.  Such if you have them in Laptop mode, does it help if you change to Tent mode?
I will assume if you were to check the volume levels in the Volume Mixer on the speaker icon, the system volume shows as extremely low?
Does opening the Recording devices dialog window from the speaker icon have any effect..?  Can we assume your system only does this using internal speakers?  
Does keeping the volume around 30% or less have any effect, even on the time the speakers will play until fading.  Keep in mind, if some component is overheating, it may take a while to cool all the way down.

Dear All,
I Had just bought a new Windows 10 pro CD from a retail shop.
But my Dell Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1 is not letting me to chose windows 10 pro in the start of  installation process .
It continues itself choosing the windows 10 home for the new installations every time I tried.
I tried doing clean installation by removing the default partition but no solution come up.
Please help and advise to install windows 10 pro in my Dell Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1.

Answer:Not Able to Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro on Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1

If you have a retail license, you may be able to go to the Activation page and change the License Key there.
The way you normally upgrade to pro is to get an upgrade from Microsoft and it installs over the current Home version.  But since you have the license you could try changing it.
This may effect any recovery options you have  available since the Dell recovery is for the home version.

Hello! I have a new Inspiron 13 5368 2 in 1 laptop that I've owned for about a week. I love the laptop so far...other than the touch pad. The touch pad works, though it seems to somewhat unresponsive at times and it just doesn't seem precise. When I'm using the touch pad, the pointer doesn't work nearly as accurately as it does when I have a usb mouse plugged in. I've used laptop touch pads before, though this one seems to fight me more than usual. It seems less responsive when my finger movement slows down for more precise movement. At times, the pointer isn't moving when my finger is moving across the touch pad.
Anybody else experiencing this with this laptop? If so, are there any driver downloads or setting that can fix the issue?

Neither of the driver packages for the Realtek IR webcam work. One just gives me a "Device cannot start 10" error and the other starts but doesn't function and causes a BSOD on shutdown/reboot.

I'm using an Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1 with Windows 10 home and the drivers in question are listed in the drivers page for my specific service tag. The generic drivers do work, but do not support Windows Hello as the IR functionality is needed.

I have a Linux install on a USB stick and would like to test it on my Inspiron 13-5368. I really don't want to mess around with changing any UEFI settings. I just want to change the boot order for a one time boot up. I know F2 gets me into the system setup. Would F12 or some other key present me with the boot order?

I have Inspiron 5368 and whenever I change my display resolution options, my laptop starts to logoff and restarts the whole system after I click apply to any display resolution option. However, I am using windows 7 a copy of my own because I don't like windows 10 and a friend of mine said that could be maybe of the drivers not installed or any sort of issue regarding the drivers but I don't think so.

Any suggestions why this happens please ?

I get a 2000-0511 Processor Fan Fail error and cannot correct it. I tried updating the driver and cleaning the air vent slots at the bottom but I still get the error. The machine is still under warranty until 12/2/2017.
How can I fix this or can I send it back t Dell for repair?

Does the system overheat? Do you hear the fan spin?
Update the BIOS and restart and check.
If the issue stands unresolved, Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.

Hi There,
I bought Dell Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1 a few months ago, the laptop was one of my favorite laptops ever, hence, I was using it heavily.
Sadly, the touchscreen stopped working suddenly without obvious reasons. Everything else is normal. I checked the screen or the laptop for any possible physical damage but I could not find anything. the screen is working totally fine but the touchscreen functionality is dead.
I reinstalled the device drivers without success. I have also checked the power management options and did the diagnostics.
I don't prefer to send the laptop back to dell because all my applications and files are in this laptop. 
Could you help me out find the problem, its driving me nuts :/

You have really two options:  replace the screen at your cost by yourself, or use the warranty and have Dell do the replacement.

I just received an Inspiron 5000 5368 last Tuesday (Jan. 10, 2017) and everything works except the hard drive activity light doesn't work. When the power adapter is plugged in to the computer, the light does work, but any hard drive activity does not show (It should blink with activity). When the power adapter is unplugged, the activity light does not work at all. I've applied all the firmware updates at the Dell support site for my machine but no joy.
I did find in these forums a key-combination (Fn + H) that does activate the hard disk activity light, but it only works when invoked at the Windows 10 desktop and only for that session. If I restart the computer, the hard disk activity light no longer works, but once I'm at the Windows desktop, I can enter Fn+H and it works again. It seems to be someone forgot to put the command for hard drive activity light in the boot loader code. It's a hassle to do the key combination all the time.
Is there any way I can get this fixed remotely? Or can I get a new machine with this fixed?
I called Dell tech support but the line went dead after a few minutes speaking with a tech support person.

Just purchased a refurbed 5368 2 in 1.  The audio begins normal then over the course of 5-10 secs fades to soft.
Things i have done.
1.  Updated all drivers (bios, audio and so on)  from dell website and in different configurations doing so with reset to factory config after doing so ( not a big deal as new machine and have nothing i need to save till i know audio works).  up to date on all windows also.
2.  gone thru all available realtek driver upgrades.
3.  done everything i could try in the audio faq/recent solutions here,  for ex communications tab change to do nothing , and all the other suggestions. ie  all the suggested solution for issues 1-2 for 53xx
Now to the drivers.  per the suggestion here .  when i go to load the "high definition Audio"  driver here is what i see.   Sound video game... , 2 choices intel display audio and realtek audio.  chose real tek, go thru list till 6, show compat.. is checked, only choice is realtek .  per NOTE uncheck , now long list of manufacturers, see no "High Definition Audio" in manufacturer list so chose microsoft and look in "model" , list there which includes "high Definition Audio Device" .  Chose this one and get warning,  loaded anyway, restart and have error. "no audio device installed"
Not sure what else to try

Good evening everyone... could use a hand here... I need to diagnose why the computer is crashing...? Here's what I know.

Dell Inspiron - 530 desktop
intel core 2 duo cpu
e7200 @ 2.53 Ghz
2.99 GB RAM

Description of the freezes up randomly
really slow - tremendously slow
to shutdown... must hold the on button
2% disk space used on 450 GB HDD
went to do some banking - got a crazy page - did not enter in information
Googled the same link... the very same thing came up -
No problem with the online banking page
Mcafee internet security

Processes running during one crashsystem idle process 98%
Services.exe 1
G2mcomm.exe 1
system - system 1
Looked for device error messages = NONE
Downloaded video drivers and installed (Intel g33/g31 experss chipset family)

Looked in event log (Manage) - Fax service was starting at the time of the event. No fax printer installed so disabled the service.
Subsequent Crashes resulted Event log USERNV
"Windows save user [computername]\[USER] registry while an application was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the users registry has not been freed the Registry will be loaded when it is no longer inuse.

Had Application error IE - downloaded and installed Chrome... same problem... but it did take about 35 minutes for it to crash again

Ran HijackThis... did not spot anything... here's the log

Hi. I have a Dell inspiron 15-7559. And sometimes it accidentally goes to sleep. I don't press keyboard buttons at this moment, usually I scrolling thru web pages or just looking to the screen. 
After going to sleep, it doesn't want to wake up and it lasts about 3-5 minutes every time. Battery/AC adapter-  doesn't matter, happens on both configs.

How can I troubleshoot it?

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 15 5558 Signature edition laptop which runs windows 10. I've only had this laptop for 4 months. I've noticed that the laptop will go off for no apparent reason. I've checked the sleep settings and changed them to no avail. It goes off while I'm reading or watching a movie...just randomly. The only good thing is that when I turn it back on, it returns to whatever I was doing. If I was watching a movie when it went off, if I press the power button I will hear the audio continue while I'm unlocking the lock screen. It's a random thing that happens and it's very frustrating especially as this is a new laptop. Please help

I recently purchased a Dell 5368 with the Core i5 Processor, Full HD Display, and backllit keyboard directly from Dell, after two sales agents both recommended it for my travel needs. I told them both that having support for an Active Pen or Active Stylus was a non-negotiable requirement of my work. Both assured me this computer would support that.But then, when I tried to order the Active Stylus, the Live Chat agent said, "This won't work with your computer". So, I started trying to find an answer. I really need to be able to write detailed notes on screen and make diagrams, as I am told I can with my 15 7000 Core i7 Full HD. I just wanted a bit smaller unit for the road, but if I can't use an Active Stylus, I don't want the machine.Calls to Dell's apparently incompetent and uncaring Customer Non-Support Line have netted the following responses:
2 agents say the Active Stylus will work.2 agents say it won't
1 Supervisor will not respond to calls to her direct line, or to any emails
Technical Support says, "Unfortunately, we don't know the answer to that, sorry"
One final agent says, "It will work, but only with the 750-AAFJ Stylus. I purchased the Dell Inspiron 2 in 1 touch screen a couple weeks ago and I have been having issues with it ever since. The computer works fine for several hours and then it just freezes up. The keyboard and touchscreen are both frozen, so there is no possibly way to troubleshoot anything. Each time it happens I am forced to manually restart the computer. It doesn't seem to matter what I am doing, when it malfunctions. I cant even CTRL-ATL-DELETE to close anything down. Every report I runs says nothing is wrong.  Any idea how I can prevent this from happening? It's occurring several times a day and just  happened today while I was working on research for my dissertation. This unknown glitch is causing my work to suffer. . It occurs about twice a day now, so its getting to be very problematic. Its running on Windows 10 if that helps.  I welcome all suggestions!!

Kindly write a detailed description of the issue.
What is the exact system model? What is the current OS installed on the system? Does the system freeze with or without the adapter connected? Does the system overheat? What applications are you using when the system freezes? When it freezes, does it resume automatically or do you need to restart the system on every instance? 
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional. Also, run an extended / thorough tests on the HDD and memory to check for any possible errors. 
Restart the system and press f2 to enter BIOS - leave the system in BIOS with the adapter plugged in for as long as possible and check if the system freezes while in BIOS - you would notice there is a system clock ticking in BIOS - if the system freezes, then the clock would have frozen as well.

I've got DELL Inspiron with i5. I bought it last May 2011. Last 2 months sometimes my laptop shut offs when it was over heated. But it was temporarly 1-2 minutes later i could open it.
Last thursday installed FIFA12 -original-. While I was playing computer shutted off, i thought over heated again but 2-3 later computer did not started, pushed open button, fan was starting but only 15 seconds later shutted down again. Yesterday I went to service (not dell) he blowed air into laptop. After i came home and opened FIFA12 it closed again. When i was trying to open, 15 seconds later shutted down again but 2 hours later its opened just for 20 min. Today i blowed an air and for now it's working fine (idk when problem shows up again) but i can't play FIFA12 cause when i am trying to play problem appears again.

When it's on and you look through the vent where the other guy and you blow in air can you see the fan going round? It sounds like either the fan isn't working or not working properly. If this is the case it will need to be replaced.

Hello, I bought a inspiron 7359 and I have freeze randomly.
I test unistalling the dell video graphic driver and install it from INTEL directly, nothing happened.
I try unistaling Intel dynamic platform and thermal framework driver and downloading it again from dell website, nothing happened.
I tryied 4 different versions of windows 10 64bits, nothing happened.
Any suggestion or Idea?

i have just purchased a DELL Inspiron 15 5000 SERIES - 5559 with Windows 10 Pro pre-installed in Spanish. I have also purchased a DELL 24" additional screen SE2416H.
Whilst watching live internet broadcasts (TV, Youtube etc.) on Chrome, Edge or Firefox, as soon as I connect the screen to the laptop by HDMI cable, the sound on my laptop speakers disappears. Upon disconnection of the HDMI screen cable, the sound re-appears.  
However, the sound doesn't disappear when using other sound applications such as Skype. 
This means I can't enjoy watching internet TV with sound on the 24" screen.
Please advise how to fix this as the main point of purchasing the 24" screen was precisely to be able to watch (and listen to) TV programs.

My Inspiron 5759 laptop has shut off randomly several times. 
On all occasions I was picking it up to move it.  A couple of times I was holding it with one hand. I noticed that when I do that, the case flexes a significant amount. 
Could the case be flexing enough that the battery contacts loose connection?
Anyone else have issues with this computer shutting off?

The problem: It restarts randomly, no blue screen, no error messages. It just goes into the Restarting process, including the screen where it says "Restarting". Basically kicking me out while I was writing documents, editing images, nothing system intensive. I have played the Witcher 3 for hours and it was fine.  
This is very troublesome since it's very unreliable.

It is not Windows Update because WU asks you beforehand.and tells you after reboot that the system has been restarted,
I do not think it's the temperature because I have a monitoring software that says it's cool and a cooling pad as well. 

What I did: (Note: I already turned off Automatic restart in System before those restarts happened).: 

Checked Event Viewer nothing special, checked Reliability History, nothing special. 
Did stress test using Dell F12 comprehensive tests, Dell Assistant tests, memtest86, Prime95, Unengine Benchmark. Can't seem to replicate it.
Ran File System Checker, HDD bad sector scan, etc.
Finally Re-Imaged the PC using the provided Dell Tool and Image for this laptop. And still it's doing it...randomly.

It is strange a system would restart like that.  Have you tried booting to something like an Ubuntu install and running it as a Live version.  If it were some component on the system it might happen there also.  If the problem originates in the original configuration, reimaging may put you in the exact same place.
Does the system require you to sign in after these restarts?
Does it happen on battery power as well as plugged in?
It should be leaving some type of footprint in the logs.  Keep track of the exact time it happens along with uptime of the system to see if you can find any standards.  In a situation like this, even the info entries of event viewer may hold some repeating entry or even entries at the time it happens.
You might try running the system in Safe Mode for a while to see if it happens there also.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop which after turning it on, would just shut off. It didn't matter whether or not the power cable was plugged in. So I thought maybe the hard drive is broken and a file is preventing windows from booting. I got an external enclosure and copied all my files over to another computer, so the hdd worked fine. I then tried to reinstall Windwos XP SP3. I boot from CD, deleted the current partitions, created 1 new one and pressed Enter to install Windows. About 6% in, the computer shut off again.

I imagine this isn't a software issue, since the computer had no software and still shut off (which is why I'm posting in the hardware forum).

Now when it boots, it says error loading OS obviously because there is none deleted in the previous step.

If I reboot and boot from CD again, it gets to the point that says Starting Windows (to install it from disc) and then reboots, and I'm back to where I started.

I also tried Diagnostics from the boot menu (under the hard drive and cd-rom) and after 8 passed tests, it shut off during the memory test. Could it be faulty/old/broken RAM?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this or reinstall Windows? What could the problem be?

It's a new Dell and it has been making crackling sound since I got it.
I spent an hour on the phone with a technician who restored the laptop with Windows 8.1 to an earlier point in time and it stopped crackling for the rest of the day, but the next day, the noise was back.
The worst are "ding" sounds, they have more crackle than ding. Video playback is bad but at least we can understand what is said. Youtube is bad. mp3 audio is bad. Crackle is there with earphones too.

hi everyone, 
im looking for clarification on a theory i have. so here is the situation.
i am trouble shooting at inspiron n5040 laptop. The laptop will not stay on longer then 10 mins WITH the power cord plugged in. Nor will it stay on on battery power alone. Now the pc tells me that the battery needs to be replaced, so i bought a new battery for this laptop. Same issue except the only difference is that with the new battery it no longer tells me it needs to be replaced.
Now event viewer is telling me that its a kernel Power 41 error. In my experience trouble shooting this its been the power supply is going bad. but since this is a laptop and it has a battery, im not sure how to go about replacing the "power supply" any thoughts???

Computer: Dell Inspiron 13 5000 series 2-in-1 laptop. Core i7 processor, windows 10. Let me know if you need more information.
I'll be playing some sort of media (eg: youtube video) and the volume will be just fine. Then, over a period of 10-20 seconds it will slowly fade out until you can't hear it. I'll need to close the media and reopen it to fix this problem. I have not experienced this when using headphones. 
I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers and that did not help.

My Dell laptop has been acting weird since yesterday. I was working on it fine when It randomly went black, it's like when the screen "sleeps" to save battery after I hadn't moved it in a long time, except I didn't have a low battery and I was still actively working on it. I turned on the screen again and after about 10 seconds it went black again, I repeated this several times with the same result. I also tried holding the power button to turn the computer off and restarting it, but the laptop screen still went black after a short time. This is really frustrating, I have a lot of work I need to finish on it. I need to fix it quick.
I'm not sure if this is related, but before this happened I was working fine on the laptop on a word document, but the word documents kept not responding, or if I tried to close one word document then it would not respond and the other word documents could not respond either forcing me to close them. This happened a lot. It also has happened when I was reading pdf files on adobe reader before. 
I've also been ignoring dell updates ever since I got this laptop last summer so I don't know if that has anything to do with it.

I'm currently using Windows 10 Home anniversary build with my Dell Inspiron 7352 2-in-1 model (with solid sate drive and on-board Intel graphic card) and experiencing randomly freezes quite often. I have tried to update hardware drivers and bios but to no avail. I have clean installed Windows 3-4 times but still have seen the same issue. The only thing I can do is to hard reset. The problem happens most of the time when I watch video on Youtube or other sites that require flash player. I normally use Chrome and some suggested to turn off 'use hardware acceleration when available' but that didn't help in my case. In fact, the problem is also present when switching to other browser like Edge too. The video card driver has been updated and I also tried updating flash player but the problem still persists. Even worse, the freezing also occurs sometimes when I leave my laptop overnight without putting it into sleep or hibernation. The freezing occurs randomly but usually within a week it comes to say hi to me. It might be the next day after previous freezing. Sometimes after first hard reset it freezes all of the sudden and requires another reset. Because of this, it's really hard to tell whether the problem comes from hardware or software side. I have another laptop with Win 10 Pro anniversary build equipped with two hard drives (SSD and HDD) and dual graphic cards but this machine works like a charm without any problem.

The AUDIO FADE PROBLEM is an issue with this laptop and I am wondering if it is related to the above.
I have upgraded to the latest BIOS and drivers using the Dell Product Support pages.
Every other day I have to reinstall the Realtek Audio Device to get audio from streaming media.
The current Driver Version is from Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Date 12/08/2016 which is what it defaults to upon reinstall.
I suspect that for whatever reason Dell has not yet come up with a fix. Has it something to do with the fact that although I bought the laptop new, it had been upgraded from Windows 8 to 10? (A fact that I only discovered later)

i've been looking around for days, so i wouldnt be posting here unless i was completely desperate.

i got my laptop, Dell Inspiron 6400 about 2 weeks ago. Tried Vista, hated it.. formatted to my old XP Home. realised i had to download and install all the drivers myself as i dont have any cd's or manuals from Dell. so i did that..

only problem is my 'Ethernet Controller' and 2 'PCI Devices# have yellow exclamation marks next to them, and i have no sound on the laptop. ive tried absolutely everything. hundreds of different drivers, tutorials, etc. i'm very desperate. i need my sound back. please help if you have ANY idea's.

I have had my dell for approx 3 years now and the other day my sound suddenly stopped working (no sound from ear plugs either). I restarted the computer and it made no difference. I can't play any sounds (no sound when the comp turns on, no sound on itunes, "Itunes has detected a problem with your audio configuration,"Youtube etc etc you get the picture.

I found some solutions online but none of the settings seem to have changed when I attempted to change them. So I went into safe mode and the speaker icon on the bottom right hand corner has a cross on it indicating that there is no sound (there was nothing of the sort when i wasn't in safe mode) I looked for solutions online and went into Services > Windows Audio to press START and the following came up "Windows could not start the windows audio service on local computer error 1068: the dependency service or group failed to start."

I have also tried system restore, but am unable to do so and the following appears "No restore systems have been created on your computer's system disk."

Please someone help, thank you in advance

while listening to a mp3 from a music web site, i had inadvertently gotten my leg caught
in my lap top speakers and pulled out the jack . When I hooked them back up I was unable to get the right speaker to work unless I played with the jack.

I unhooked the speakers thinking I could still listen via the built in speakers.

I now have no sound! What would have caused this? Do you think a wire is loose ? all the controls show the volume up and the mute is off.

I have an Inspiron 660 desktop that I bought about 3.5 years ago. I updated to Windows 10 and have recently started using a Dell U2415 UltraSharp Monitor. The sound bar was working well with the new monitor and desktop until about a week ago I noticed the sound started getting low, then completely out, then came back on like normal.  It worked fine for the last week, then it started doing it again today and now completely no sound.  I have tried headphones and two different Dell sound bars and the sound doesn't work on any of them.  I have looked at settings and device manager and it says the 'Intel (R) Display Audio' is working correctly.
I have looked at different solutions, including downloaded the latest audio (Conexant Smart Audio Driver) and chip driver updates (12/15) and still no luck.  Can someone please help?

i have a dell inspiron 7500 with windows 200 installed on it. i just tried to play a music cd and wmp said it "cannot play the file b/c there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly". i ran diagnostics and it came back with no errors on the Audio port. i was able to hear all of the sound test w/o any issues. I have updated the drivers for windows 2000 on my laptop also. I checked for question marks or exclamation mark in Device Manager! Did not have any there? I also uninstalled and reinstalled drivers. when i go to properties for the sound drivers everything is grayed out! Any advice is greatly appreciated!

i have a dell inspiron 1525 with windows vista and am currently experiencing problems with the sound. Specifically i have none and want to know why.

I have checked the sound settings in the control panel, device manager and taskbar and have had no success as yet. Everything says its all AOK.

I re-installed Win XP onto my I2500 and now the sound card is saying that it's installed properly, but it cannot start. I've misplaced my Dell Diagnostics & Utilities CD that has all the original drivers. Unfortunately, Dell's website isn't any help because they don't have the drivers for my integrated speakers. Does anyone have the cd that I need?

I got a Dell Inspiron 1525 back in September. Runs on Vista.

A few weeks ago, I began noticing a crackling sound that was coming from the top left hand corner of the keyboard section of the laptop, right near where the 'Inspiron' logo is. It doesn't usually start until I've had the computer running for 30 minutes or so.

I called Dell and shipped the computer to their facility since it's still under warranty. They sent it back saying that they could not detect any problem with any of the hardware and therefore, did not fix anything. Sure enough, after getting it back and turning it on and being on it for 30 minutes or so, the sound is still there.

Everything about the computer works fine...the Internet, my progams. It isn't slow or anything. But this sound just doesn't sound right.

Does anyone have any ideas what this may be? Could it be an issue with the laptop's fans? If so, aren't the fans considered to be part of the hardware?

Thanks for any light anyone may be able to shed on this issue.

Is laptop staying cool or did you try to update your wireless/network card? When you listening music can you check CPU usage and temperature (with temp additional program) under task manager. Also, CPU fan is not making that noise.

Now, this proves to be an elusive solution. Even when I first had to worry about this back about a year ago. Unfortunately I cannot find the answer anymore.

I was unfortunately put into a situation in which I had to get Vista on my computer (I for some reason didn't even think to set up a dual-partition) which is the Inspiron 6000 by Dell. With the Sigmatel C-Major Audio card there don't seem to be any primary drivers that work with Vista. I know there is a third party one out there somewhere, however I have had no luck. Does anyone happen to have a solution to this? It is driving me mad.

Gasp, I know, I know, A problem with a Dell computer/laptop, can you believe it!? Sigh.

Anyway, I discovered the problem this evening (it's 1am in the morning here, Christmas day, but I refuse to rest until I can reach a conclusion on the problem - how sad!). I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop. I folded the lid down while the laptop was still running, then when I picked the laptop up again and tried to play music, there was no sound. None atall. No sound from Windows Media, no system sounds, nothing. When I plug the headphones in all I get is a fuzzing noise with an occasional feint bleep.

Ive gone through XP's 'troubleshooting' thing: there is no conflicts or anything like that, all the hardware is there. I had no problems with sound prior to this evening.

I know it's vague, but thats pretty much the gist of it. I cant think of any reason why the sound has just...stopped working. My only guess is that the machine has taken a bump and somethings become dislodged internally or something, because I cant find fault with any hardware. But I know comparitively little about computers.

I will ring dell in a few days time as I should imagine their officers will be closed, so until then, Id just like a second opinion if possible.

my laptop buzzes during audio and video playback. Kind of like a surge or skip buzz, like it gets hung up then continues. I can not burn audio or video disks because the noise burns onto the disk as well.

I have problem with my dell inspiron n4010 sound's.
The sound is not working like before.
I have to try to install the driver of sound, but it's still not working.
Dell Inspiron n4010 core i3, graphic card is intel graphic, not ATI Radeon.
I have to try to install the driver from dell driver CD but, it's still not working, they said it's not working in your system. But I have to checked on web of DELL. My Dell's Laptop working on win 7 home premium 64 bit. I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron 15 7537 i7-4510U, 16.6" Touch. It had Windows 8.1 in it.
It has been working great so far, apart from one BIG problem - the audio playback quality is terrible.
When I try listening to music, I can barely hear any low-ends (or bass). I tried different plugging different equipment - my Sony stereo system, as well as, Beats Pro headphones - both yielded dissapointing results. For example, the same file played on my iPod sounds MUCH better than it does on my new Dell Inspiron. Same goes for playing the same YouTube video on another computer using the same headphones. It seems that every other equipment (another laptop, iPod, iPhone) all sound the same and much better my Inspiron.
The audio drivers are up to date (they were selected automatically based on my model on I also tried changing Equalizers on the Realtek sound card settings. I noticed the difference, but all of the options still resulted in a vastly inferior sound quality vs. my older laptop (which I'm pretty sure has default settings, as I never had any problem with audio quality).
Does anyone have any idea how can I fix the issue? I heard Windows 8.1 on some laptops may have some problems with low-end sound, could that be the case? My older laptop also uses Windows 8.1, as does the stationary PC, so I personally doubt it. Is it possible that this could be a manufacturing defect on the sound card?

Hello. Try switching to the Windows native audio driver:
1. Open the Device Manager (type devmgmt.msc in the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the Realtek driver,  do it again but reverse the names in steps 1 and 6.]
If there is still no bass then it could be a hardware problem and for that you should contact tech support. Make sure that the eq in your music player (i.e. Windows Media Player) is set to normal. Also when comparing to other playback devices, all of their eq and other enhancements should be set to flat, to try to compare apples to apples as much as possible.

I have brand new a Dell Inspiron 7559 (Core i5 model) which i received 2 days ago.  The inbuilt speakers work fine. But when I plug in my earphones, the is sound only on the left side and a very faint sound on the right one. When I check the left and right sound in the sound properties, both the test sounds appear on the left side only. The earphones I am using are Klipsch R6. And here are no issues with the earphones since they work perfectly with my phone and other Dell Inspiron laptop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all
Just done a fresh install of XP Pro, now no sound, no startup/shutdown music. The sound card is OK, the speakers are working as the error bleeps etc are making there sounds. Any ideas please?

It sounds like you haven't installed the sound/audio drivers, which aren't part of XP and which you should be able to get from the Dell website. There may be other drivers you need to install too - look in Device Manager for yellow exclamation marks.

I'm working on an inspiron 6000 and it doesn't have audio. I reinstalled the audio drivers (sigmatel STAC 975X AC97) and it worked fine. Sent the customer home with it fixed. She called an hour later and said there is no sound. I confirmed with her that it wasn't muted or something dumb like that. She brings it back and sure enough there is no audio. The device shows up in device manager like it should, no yellow ? or anything like that. I re-reinstalled the audio driver again and it worked fine......until i did a reboot.

Any Ideas why it seems to fail over and over after reboots???

I have dell 15R (N5010) and have problem with audio drivers. When i upgrade to Windows 10 my audio drivers doesn't work and no have sound. I spoke with Microsof community, he send me to dell... It's rly funny because dell leave users of older laptops because they no have profits for that. The warranty is over so bye :) Someone can help me?

Warning to anyone reading this thread:
Make sure you know your model name before installing a driver!
The subject of this thread is "Dell inspiron 15R n5010 no sound, Windows 10". The problem is that there is no model with that exact name. There is an Inspiron 15 N5010, and an Inspiron 15R N5110.
They are different models and use different drivers. In other words, the audio driver for the N5010 is not meant for the N5110, and vice versa.
To complicate matters, somebody named aimeehuang posted in this thread and put in a link named "dell 15r n5010 drivers download". But if you click on the link it goes to a page for Inspiron 15R N5110.The person named "aimeehuang" is not a regular on this discussion board and probably got the model names confused.
Check your model name. If you have an Inspiron 15 N5010, use the IDT R280657 audio driver. It is meant for Win7, so install it into Win10 using compatibility mode (instructions below).
If you have an Inspiron 15R N5110, use the IDT audio driver. It is meant for Windows 8. It might install without a problem into Win10, but if there is a problem, install it using compatibility mode (instructions below).

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100 Notebook computer running Windows 2000, Version 5.0 (Build 2195: Service Pack 4). I have no sound coming from my speakers during windows start-up or if I try to play an mp3 file. I also have no speaker icon on my task bar. Looking at the Device Manager ? Sound, video and game controllers area I have the following:
-Audio Codecs
-ESS Maestro PCI Audio (WDM)
-Legacy Audio Drivers
-Legacy Video Capture Devices
-Media Control Devices
-Video Codecs
One device is showing the dreaded exclamation point (!). It?s for the ESS Maestro PCI Audio (WDM) device by ESS Technology, Inc.. Checking the properties, the device status window notes the following:
?This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)?.
Looking at the Sounds and Multimedia Properties icon, under the Audio tab, all the items are grayed out (Sound Playback, Sound Recording and MIDI Music Playback).
This issue started after installing a LinkSys RangePlus Wireless Notebook Adapter. Can you assist me in getting my sound back?

I have been trying to get an old Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop working with the help of the very helpful people on this site and I am very nearly there but for one problem I can't get any sound.I have 2 hard drives the original one which is very small and as such everything was going at a snails pace it could take 5 mins just to open up Word etc so I have replaced it with a larger hard Drive which works a great deal quicker But I just cant get the sound to work. I have checked out the sound in control panel and all the options are greyed out and when I went to device manager everything was ther ok except for "Sigma Tel C-MAJOR Audio (with a yellow !) I clicked on this and ticked the option to update driver and it came back with unable to find a better one than the one installed can any one help me out wit what could be the problem Cheers Ray

I have had similar problems. First things is older laptops will be slower and the clock rates inside are slower and the software is getting mor demanding on speed.I would recommend reinstalling XP (I assume it's this) to clean everything out). You should have the DELL discs, if not get them from DELL. Make sure you extract all Keys from the laptop first so the reinstall is legit and you can get all the updates (SP3 etc).If you don't want to do that get the audio driver from DELL (that's what I did on the same laptop some time ago).I would not think the laptop can be upgraded to Vista (too slow) but you may consider Ubuntu as an alternative (may not be quicker but just a thought).Google your problems and you should get answers for a common laptop such as that one.

I have had this for about a year now. Just recently the sound starts off fine but fades out after about 10 seconds as to where I can barely hear it. I have tried to reinstall the driver but its still doing the same thing. Sound works fine with headphones just not thru the speakers. Please Help!!!!

I have an N5110 Inspiron. I bought it around 6 years ago. It had a faulty HDD so I had it replaced about 5.5 years ago. It has been working fine since then.
However, it has been making a weird clicking sound from the beginning. It usually occurs when the HDD is idle (the HDD led isn't on). Sometimes it doesn't happen for minutes whereas other times it happens a couple of seconds apart. I was wondering what could this be?
My laptop is getting quite old and currently, I cannot replace it so I want to keep it functional as long as possible. Could this clicking reduce the life-expectancy of my HDD, is it a sign of something faulty? If yes, what can I do to prevent an HDD failure and losing all my files?

They don't call it click death for nothing.  The drive is trying to recalibrate track zero and isnt finding it. So the drive is likely to die very soon and lose everything.  Drives die, this isn't a fault anymore than the brakes on your car or other mechanical things like tires wearing out from use.

to start with the only time I got any sound is when skype was operating thought something was wrong with it so i deleted skype..well.. now there is no sound at all. I check device manager and it says that the sound device is I deleted the drivers and went to the dell site and down loaded them and installed them and still no sound so I went through and deleted againg...checking in device manager and in programs and features to make sure they are gone...when I rebooted they came up and installed themselves...i didnt go and download them again...still no sound but this stupid computer is in denial because the device is still not working. I did have sound earlier today and did not do anything just seemed to suddenly stop working. please help...I have been working on this for hours and getting no where. I have checked the sound settings over and over ..they are set right..and still...when I test nothing happens...and it is not on mute

I just received this computer in the last couple of weeks.  The bass and lower end frequencies sound really really bad on this system.  I thought it was a problem with the internal speakers but I just tried a set of tried and true external speakers and they sound exactly the same.  Mid and upper range frequencies are nice and clear but anything low sound muffled and clipped.  I've played with all the various settings and tried different EQ settings - nothing.  Anyone else have this issue and know a fix?

That is unusual. The sound out of the audio jacks should not be affected by any internal processing unless you specifically enable it.  Here are a couple of things to try. 
1) Disable all of the THX sound features. You have to disable them all one by one.  See if that changes the sound output
2) Disable all Realtek sound effects in their control panel (EQ, reverbs). See if that changes anything.
3) Finally, disable al audio enhancements in the Windows audio control panels. This can be done by right clicking on the Windows speaker in systray, select Playback devices, double click on the Speakers or Line Out/Headphone Out bar in the list, select the Enhancements tab, and click on the "Disable all enhancements." NOTE: this is very literal. It will disable all of the audio effects on that output device including the two items listed above. It basically forces the driver to stop doing any extra stuff it was doing before.
If you do resort to step 3, you will need to be careful with playing back audio on the internal speakers. Sometimes there are Equalization and filter settings to help protect the speakers inside the system.

Hey, worked for me on my Dell Inspiron 6400, with the home drive installed as drive E: instead of C: which happened when I put in a new hard drive. Anyway, the sound has not worked for 3 years and this fixed it I ran the exe it asked wher to put the driver and I selected the E: drive, and the folder that exists in dell/drivers/R12nnnn which I wont spell out because of you know, hackers and stuff.Rebooted and she's all done.thankyou thankyou thankyou.

I've had my Dell Inspiron 24-7459 computer for about a month.  Sound was coming from the internal speakers but now the sound no longer works.  I've tried the volume, mute features with no luck.  Should I be trying something different?

Hello. Did you plug in headphones or external speakers to check whether audio is coming through the headphone jack?
If audio is coming through the jack but not the internal speakers, run the ePSA audio test to see if the speakers have failed.
If there is no audio from either the speakers or jack then the problem is not the speakers, so try reinstalling the audio driver. Open the Device Manager and expand the Sounds...Controllers section. Right click on Realtek HD Audio and select to uninstall. Do not put a check mark in the option to delete the files. When you reboot, Windows will re-install the Realtek driver by rebuilding it from the files. The point of doing that is the rebuilt driver will have the default configuration which will correct any misconfiguration issue.
If that doesn't fix it the next step would be to install a fresh copy of the driver from the support page.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400, service pack 3.

Up until Monday, my sound was working fine. Now I simply can't get any sound out of my laptop whatsoever!

I am wondering whether someone has somehow changed settings or volumes I don't know about so if anyone can suggest anywhere to look I'd appreciate it.

I know my soundcard AND speakers are fine. I checked my Device Manager and the device is fine. I also ran a diagnostics check at startup.. as in the F12 key and checked the sound.. I heard a few melodies, clicked the 'yes' I can hear button and the test was complete..

So why, when I turn on my laptop and play a song/video/etc.. can I not hear a single sound?

Obviously, my laptops general settings are not muted.. I have checked.

Any help would be appreciated!

it has been just 20 days since i bought my dell inspiron 14.... n when i use the touch pad.. the mouse cursor gets stuck at times...
and today... when i switched on the laptop.. i had a problem with logging in... the display got stuck and the music i ve kept start making a bizarre sound..(like dat of trrrrrrrrrrrrrr) it kept repeating almost again and again when i tried to shut down and switch on again!!!! plssss help!!!!!!!

The laptop is totally new. It's delivered 2 days ago. Everything is fine until I find the sound issue.
The sound is working as I turn on the laptop, but if I restart the laptop, the sound is gone.And if I shut down the laptop completely, then turn on the laptop again, the sound is working again.
Sound device is Conexant SmartAudio HD CX20722, OS: WIN10 home 64-bit
I have tried re-installation of the audio drivers which is download from the Dell website, reinstall WIN 10, and all other kinds of suggestions. But sadly they are all failed.

Hi, I recently bought a new Dell Inspiron 6400 about 2 months ago.

For the past few days,I've been getting sound only on the left laptop speaker. It is not permanent, it is intermittent and the sound on the right still works, but it keeps switching on and off. There is no disturbance in quality.

I've checked my driver (SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC) and there are no updates for it.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic.

Anyone have any idea what this is caused by? Have I damaged something?

I have a 3520 that was upgraded to Windows 10.  It was giving just 3 beeps on post and nothing else.  I replaced the system board as per Dell, and now it boots up but the right speaker is silent.  The left one works fine though.  I tried headphones and they work normally with sound out of both sides.  I replaced the speakers but it did no good, same issue.  I checked all the audio settings and they are correct.  Any ideas?

I have bought a Dell Inspiron 15 7567, and yesterday I noticed, that my laptop makes very quiet ticking sound. The sound very similar to HDD's head movement sound, the only problem is, that in my laptop there is no HDD. I use just 2 SSD (1 X M.2 PCI-E x4 [Samsung 960 EVO], and 1 X SATA 3 2.5" [Samsung 850 EVO]). In this model there's no optical drive, so the only mechanical part of this laptop, that coud generate this sound, if it would be mechanical sound, is the fan system. but strangely the ticking sound only hearable when the fans stop spinning.
So I don't think, that the fans would create this sound, because when I can see in AIDA64 that fans speed is 0 RPM, the ticking sound exactly then hearable.
Additionaly strangely, when I unplug the laptop from AC, the ticking sound almost stops (It not stops, but the click sound becomes rare)... After I plug the AC back, the ticking continues...
Do somebody sensed the same? Is it normal? My opinion, that the sound caused by on of the electronical units bad groundings, or something. Although there's no power or other issue with my laptop now, but I don't want to wait until it gets bad...

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop with Windows Vista Basic.  Today after plugging in a headphone set both the speaker and the headphone sound stopped working.  I have not changed any audio settings but checked them anyway and nothing was turned off or muted that I could see.  I have tried downloading and re-installing the audio drivers from the Dell support site but when I go to install them I get an error message saying that 'This is not the correct audio driver for this system. The installer will now exit.'
Any suggestions to get the sound working again?

i just recently bought a small set of computer speakers for my dell inspiron 3847. i plugged it into the back of the tower via usb, and now when i plug in my headphones into the front headphone jack on the tower to listen to the audio for movies or music,no sound goes through the headphones. need help troubleshooting this.

In this case the system is working as per design. When the headphone's are plugged in the systems ask's you which is the device you chose for audio output. In this case check if the headphone's are selected as the primary device for audio output then this could be the situation.

Dell Dimention 2400 using Window XP. Speaker were working fine. I may have deleted something. I need to reactivate the sounf card. ( Messege says No Play back device). When I reinstalled from the original disk Message say identified new hard drive. When testing the messfe says need software.
How can I reactivate the sound card

I had issue with laptop and found that it had some issue in chip level. the local guy got it corrected and later now i am facing continous sound of driver installing sound ( in singles), i checked in my devices, there is noting in yellow or exclamatory mark.. this sound is really annoying and its like continous, i tried restarting and many more things. 
an early support on this will be highly appreciable.
