disk usage is 100% and memory usage is 60% since win10

Question: disk usage is 100% and memory usage is 60% since win10

hey all! ever since i upgraded my laptop's win8 to win10 im getting these usages... and the machine is runnig REALLY SLOW....
i saw that it's a common problem so i looked up some solutions and tried the following:

1- i changed the registry - ?HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management? and changed ?ClearPageFileAtShutDown? value to 1
2- adjusted windows 10 to "best performance" in system settings
3- i disabled many startup programs
4- i defragemented the C drive
5- uninstalled all the programs that i could
6- I disabled "Show me tips about Windows"
7- changed the power settings profile

NONE OF THOSE WORKED. PLEASE HELP!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It seems that I've been getting low memory issues ever since upgrading to Win10, but I'm not 100% certain if thats the issue. I thought about uprading to 16gb ram, but I'd like to know if theres some other fix for this. I can't multitask as I used to be able to. Sometimes problems occur just running 8 tabs on chrome and a game(Blade and Soul). The numbers just don't seem to add up.

Answer:High Memory Usage/ Low Memory Popup on Win10 8gb Laptop

Hello svader55 Welcome to the Ten Forums!

On the first impression I would have to suspect the problem is with the upgrade itself where you might end needing to see a Clean Install of 10. First however you can try a few things out to see if this is only a minor glitch. On an older 7 model by HP the upgrade seen last summer was a disaster waiting to happen which I had enticipated and saw an immediate clean install to follow! Of after going from the 32bit 7 Home Premium to 10 Home x86 I subsequently changed that with a second fresh install the 64bit Windows.

The initial tool would be the System File Checker you would run from the Command prompt(admin) option when right clicking on the Start button. You simply scroll down to that option to see the new window open up. At the dos like prompt you then simply type in "sfc /scannow" and press enter to get the tool underway.

The tool will then scan all the important system files and if finding one or more corrupt or missing will often be able to replace them but not all unfortunately from cab files tucked away on the local drive. With previous versions the rec for having the Windows dvd in the driver was made in case the SFC had to extract something from the Windows media there if the problem was more involved. This is why the suggestion for the possible need to see a fresh clean install of 10 is being made here.

Unfortunately buggy upgrades are all too common regardless of which version is being upgraded over. But you li... Read more

Hi SirMacke,
Was this the package you tried  to update the firmware with?
If you PM me the service tag of the system, I can investigate further.

does anyone know the best way to solve this type of problem? or how to diagnose this problem? or the most common reasons for why it happens?

* happens on startup and just randomly from time to time

* solves by itself randomly

* the performance mointer thingy shows it's not any of programs cos none of them are high at all

been happening for like... i don't know whenever win10 first came out, i just never asked and could never find an answer

Answer:help 100% disk usage problem, win10 - common causes?

Across working with thousands of laptops, some just seem to have significantly slower disks. It could be a sign of disk wear or disk failure. When you open up Task Manager and click disk (I've attached an image to guide you)

what shows at the top when you're getting the 100% disk usage problem? My image shows 3% usage, which is quite normal/fine.

When you see it spikes to 100%, take a screenshot and upload here.

One thing it might be is your anti-virus software. This could be Windows Defender or another 3rd-party solution you've installed yourself.

So guys I am desperate with this problem.

I have a dualboot machine Ubuntu + Windows 10. I use Windows for gamming and Media Edition (adobe apps). I Windows 10 was a free update from Win7 and I have it for months with no single problem (until now).

Since last friday when I log in on Win 10 after maybe 2 to 6 minutes the Disk Usage of C: (my SSD drive) sundely goes to 100% making everything unresposive to the point that desktop wallapaper goes black and multiple pop-ups of crash apper leaving no choice but to unplug the pc.

Since friday I was only able to use Windows 2 days (I though It was fixed until today)

Now I have atemped a clean boot by disabling every app that boots and it still crashes.
System Restore did nothing (I didnt install anything that could make that)
SYSCHECK found no problems.
I have remove Hibernation, SuperFetch, Virtual Memory, search, everything. Fun is that when it goes to 100% there is no app or sistem process consuming anything in the Resource and Task Manager.

Now I have done this, I have created a non-admin user profile and when I log to the new user there is no problem.

So whatever happens only happens in my main Admin user account.

Can anyone please help me? Should I delete my user and transfer everything to a new one? I have never seen anything like it

The fact that the problem doesn't occur in a different use account makes me think it has to do with an auto-starting process. I would use the Ccleaner Startup Manager (for the regular items) and Autoruns to check everything that's starting at boot. You could also try booting the Admin account in SAFE mode and see whether or not the problem occurs.

So this has been really frustrating, I've looked up many, many sites online, changing regedit values, updating all drivers, disabling services, changing virtual memory, virus scan, cleaning up, rammap, poolmon... etc. As you can see:

This clearly isn't the non paged pool problem at this point. Even if I MINUS the 800MB non-paged pool it's still NO WHERE NEAR the actual memory I am using. 800MB = 8%

AND Apparently 1GB is 73% of my 10GB ram....

The percentage don't even add up! Nothing seems logic! I can't explain this! damn!

How is 182.3 MB 10% ? 1GB should be 10%! Even after I added all of them by percentage, it's still no where near 74% !
If you some how can find the solution to this problem.... you are god..

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

Thank you for taking the time - I'm pretty frustrated!

Maybe someone can direct me regarding what I might be able to do with regards to my having a sluggish browser (FF). Please don't say try Chrome because FF is indeed still better (Faster & much more customizable) !! That said...I seem to have  a problem with FF constantly getting "hung up" not responding) particularly after the memory usage from the browser rises above 600,000 k.I ALWAYS have anywhere between 50 to 125 tabs "loaded" but,not necessarily "loaded". Whaaat!!  225 tabs??   Methinks therein lies your problem.  Maybe you are expecting too much from an extension too.  It's not the job of an extension to monitor system resources.

My friend, who has a very low income was given a Dell Optiplex GX240 running Win2K Pro. 512MB RAM

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!
(I've tried leaving my homegroup to see... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

Recently my computer has been plagued by High CPU and general malware. I believe i've removed most of the malware. But I can't seem to fix the issue with the dllhost.exe and multiple explorer.exe running.

First i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Found lots of issues. all resolved. Ran them recently again and no malware was found. Still have the explorer.exe issue though.

Then I used combofix, but it changed nothing.

In the meanwhile i've just been ending the explorer.exe processes that take high CPU. This allows me to temporarily use my computer before they start popping up again.

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Answer:100% CPU usage, 100% Disk usage, cooling fans full speed

Hi, welcome to the forums,
Go to Device manager(right click bottom left corner), uninstall the "VAIO care" driver, get the new driver from Sony support:Sony eSupport - Computers - Support
Install and see whether it helps, check your system for virus infections with Malwarebytes as well.

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
defragged
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Thanks!

Answer:Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

Hello. For the past couple days, my computer has been running pretty slow, and it shouldn't be, it's only a few weeks old. The disk usage goes up to 99/100%, my computer slows down/lags, stays like that for awhile, returns to normal, and repeats. My memory usage is at 94% (7.5/8gb) at all times, and i'm not doing anything on my computer except running chrome with a few tabs opened. If anyone could help me solve these problems or point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Disk + Memory Usage ~100%

Hi Rad, welcome to the forums, open the task manager and see which programs are running in the back ground. Post the snip of your task manager.

I have the following config-> Windows XP Professional SP2 which I have been using for the last 3 years.-> Updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 running for the last 1 year.-> No new software were installed in the last month that I can recall of.Suddenly I get this problem:1. I ran an application one day (it was winrar), and nothing starts.2. Task manager shows CPU usage as 50 (I have dual core), while memory usage remains at 84k3. After a few days vlcplayer.exe started giving the same problem-> So, I reinstalled windows (formatted my C drive and installed a fresh copy). -> Everything worked fine. I was using Irfanview.exe with no problems, but then one day again, IrfanView.exe did not start. Same problem : CPU usage was 50% while memory remained really low.-> I uninstalled it from C:/program files and installed a new copy in C:/program files --- this did not solve the problem-> I uninstalled it again from C:/program files and installed to D:/ Now it works fine...-> But now again I got the same problem with media player.exeI have tried a virus scan with Kaspersky (updated) and a scan with spybot. They both came out to be clean.Any ideas?I cant reinstall Windows as that did not solve the problem.

Answer:CPU usage increases to max (while memory usage doesnt) when I run a application

I dont know if this helps: I read somewhere about creating a drive image for easy backup. So I tried DriveImageXML, but it gave an error regarding CRC check which related to bad sectors i suppose. I ran a scan disk before installing a fresh copy of Windows. Obviously, this hasnt helped either.

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

Hi guys,

I have been having issues with my computer recently. The disk usage has been jumping up to 100% frequently, and the memory usage is up in the 80's. CPU usage is on the high side too. I don't have much running, I wonder if there is something running in the background that could be the cause? It is not all the time, but intermittently.

Also, maybe a windows 10 issue, but when i try to shut down about 50% of the time it just starts up again?

I previously posted this in the malware section and my computer was found to be clean

Thanks in advance for any help,

Mari.

Hi,

Installed windows 10 recently, computer has been very slow even when idling.

I've looked at the resource monitor and the system.exe is going crazy.

I used poolmon.exe to pinpoint a driver called iaStorV.sys file version 8.6.2.1019.

I'm kinda at a loss right now because windows says the driver is uptodate and I don't where I can get a windows 10 compativle one?

I wanted to attach my system information.nfo information but it keep crashing when it got to IRQs????

So I've tried to provide the relevant info below but if there's anything missing, lemme know.

I've attached a image of the driver from system information. Dunno if that'll help.

Using WIN8.0. I am plagued by a continuing error or malady. Popping up is a window saying ?High Memory Usage? followed by ?COM.Surogate.? Sometimes a second window pops up with, ? High Disk Usage by Host Processes?. All of this makes my PC run very slow and causes freezing and other problems. Have run System Mechanic and resolved some issues but the problem is still there.

How to I correct for all of this? Thank you, eddie460

I've posted this on another site but hope that by spreading the word, someone can help me (and seemingly countless others) soon : ) Here's the exact wording I've used:

"Within a few minutes of starting up my son's HP15-p030nr laptop, the task manager shows a steady growth in disk usage to 100%. This is usually followed by the CPU level rising within in another few minutes (though the CPU mostly hovers in the 90s). The memory can also become very high. I've read many posts about 100% disk usage but not many on very high levels for all 3 categories. Please excuse me if I'm not using the right words, I'm not very computer-literate and it's only through reading many, many posts with great instructions that I've been able to try the following solutions - unfortunately, without success.

For the record, here's what I'm working with:
A series quad core AMD A8-5545M 1.7 Ghz Proc.
1028GB 5400 RPM
8 GB DDR 3L SDRAM

Processes tried:
1) Disabled (vs. stopped) superfetch, windows search, background intelligent transfer service through Services as well as subsequently through the registry. When I disable superfetch, it worked for a little while (several minutes), then level(s) spiked again. Nothing happened with disabling the other 2 items.
2) Ran anti-virus Norton 365. Also tried disabling Norton. Ran CCleaner and Malware Anti-Bytes.
3) Readjusted performance/virtual memory.

Interestingly, when I performed a clean boot, the problem STILL occurred. I've read much about what... Read more

I've recently been getting 100% CPU usage errors, and over the top memory usage, then my computer for the most part locks up. I've reinstalled WinXP, fixed IE settings back to origional settings. Ran antispyware programs and AVG. At first my problems started when I played games on Facebook, getting script errors. As I've been doing a lot of studying on these problems, I got to thinking maybe I need more memory. Then I start getting 100% CPU errors.

I've noticed in my task manager in Processes there are lots of svchost.exe listings, and a few other programs that are listed more than once. Im attaching a picture of this list, in idle mode. Wandering if anyone else sees anything that may look odd.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hello breal,do these please, post the logs and update me.Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.4.0.0) from Kaspersky's website and not TDSSKiller.zip which appears to be an older version 2.3.2.2 of the tool.Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.

I downgraded back down to windows 8 after feeling some sluggishness with my windows 10 OS.
It started off fine, but once I started downloading and installing necessary windows update files, I noticed once again the sluggishness I felt before, except this time my System Disk which is also my SSD drive, was being used up to 100% while my CPU was completely fine

Can someone please help me out in this scenario.

Hey, I've had this problem where my disk usage would spike to 100% before going back down to like 2%. I looked at countless forum posts and different sites and I found something which was a temporary fix, which was turning off tips about windows...
That worked for a while, and it just makes the intervals in-between the spikes longer, and now my memory has started to spike pretty high to about 99%, and wont come back down. When it does this I have to do a hard shut down as my pc just slows to unusable...
I also tried disabling ndu.sys in the registry, which didn't help either
I know it is not my RAM as I have tried it with other RAM and I still get the problem...

I am thinking of just restoring my PC back to Windows 7 soon if I cant get this fixed.

Thanks

Answer:Lenovo Y510 Memory and Disk Usage always at 100%

Hey Xenoid;First you need to know what is taking all that process, which can be easily found by sorting your task manager's "processes" tab by "CPU". If you found an application that is taking so much process and you have nothing to do with it, just kill it and see what happens. (right-click -> End Process Tree). You'll most likely come up with two scenarios : 1. Application is closed, you have your processing power back, and sun shines like you're in heaven or something! Which would be very doubtable in trobleshooting problems if you ask any experienced people around here of cource! but still might happen! 2. You will get one of these problems :  - The process won't let you kill it.  - The process will run again shortly after you've closed it, and the problem presists.  - The process will pulls something else down with it, like you get some errors after killing the process which prevents your system keep acting normal. If you've got the First scenario happened, Lucky you! If it bothers to kill it everytime it happens, you're free to search for ways of preventing softwares and services to run automatically on windows by finding them in the registry and deleting the keys manually (Hard Way but at least you've got everything under your own control!) or use any third party program to monitor and kill those processes(like the famous Piriform's CCleaner). In the second scenario however, you're more likely been violated by a viru... Searchindexer.exe high Disk CPU Memory usage
If you perform a search in the Start menu or in Windows Explorer by using wildcard characters in Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. For example, you search "ren*1". In this scenario, the memory usage of Searchindexer.exe increases and does not decrease as expected after the search.
For such cases you can download and apply hotfix for Windows 7 from KB2823655.

Answer:Windows 8 High usage CPU/Memory and disk

Some AV programs use quite a bit of resources. They are running all of the time, I use an AV that only scans if significant file system changes are detected, like installing a new program or downloading files. Under normal use, the real time scanner is in an idle state.

Try tweeking your AV settings, shut off any real time protection, see if that improves the performance. If it does, I'd consider getting a different AV program. I use Eset but only after trying every other one there is, its the one that impacts my performance the least. Mcafee was the worst, Norton second worst. Also, new AV suites overwrite the already adequate Windows Firewall, I don't see any reason to install any of those. Eset makes a Smart Security suite, I only use that in XP systems that don;t have a real full firewall. Norton and Mcafee will put a full firewall in there and it is in a "Learning" state, which means it nags you as you use your machine.

There could be another program that hogs your resources as well, maybe something you weren't aware got installed. Toolbars, Chrome and Firefox Extensions, are all suspect. Look for icons in your tray that you don't know what they are, also change your taskbar settings so it shows all tray items without hiding anything.

Welcome to Windows 8 forums.

There is definitely something going on.
My computer all of a sudden today is running at very high Disk, Memory and CPU levels. like random 90% + for seemingly no reason.
Especially the "Com Surrogate" process.
Slowed internet speeds, audio issues with youtube videos.
There is quite a bit of hanging and lagging and programs not responding, etc..

Thanks

Answer:Disk and Memory usage spikes in windows 10

So called "Memory leak", drivers, specially WiFi and BT seem to cause that most. Can't you see in task manager what takes most free RAM ?

Hi, In November I purchased a new Lenovo Y50. It's the non-touch 1080p version with the GTX960m. Recently, I've had issues with the fans spinning up while the laptop is idle. I opened task manager, and there are random spikes of 100% disk usage on startup and sometimes when I leave the machine idle or I'm using Chrome. Recently, I've noticed strange spikes in CPU usage too, with occasional bouts of 20% usage for seemingly no reason.  I contacted support, and they weren't able to find any issues, but had me install Lenovo Solution Center and do a full run of the tests, which didn't find anything wrong. They also had me disable all non essential startup programs and see if the problem happened again, and it does. However, cpu and disk temperatures were normal, so I was told to just monitor the problem and see if anything changes.   My system's definitely not functioning properly. Startup is notably slow considering it has the 8gb ssd and I never had issues with the fans coming on when I first got it. I've heard that there are issues with the hybrid 8gb ssd/1 tb hdd, so I need some input on this. Why is this happening? Is it a hardware issue? Firmware? My case number is 8006295558. I would greatly appreciate some help from a rep or anyone who can give me a hand with the issue.

As of late I've been experiencing slowdowns and latency when playing games like League of Legends. I got curious and opened Task Manager to see what's going on. There I saw fluctuations from 100% to 30% Disk and CPU usage. I don't know whether that's a normal occurrence or something else entirely.

Hi everyone. I am currently having issues trying to diagnose the system and compressed memory bug that causes slow disk operations. I am running a computer that I have built myself. i5 6600k, 16 GB of RAM, 2 SSD and 1 HDD. The slow operations only happen on the HDD. I can notice this when folders start to become slow and playing saved videos start to lag and drop frames. I can copy these videos and watch them just fine on the SSDs without any lag at all. I have tried multiple fixes such as disabling the notifications from windows and One Drive does not seem to be installed on my computer. I have also tried all of the solutions here BEST FIX: 100% Disk Usage by ?System and Compressed Memory? in Windows 10 - Appuals.com I just tried the second one now so I'm not sure if that's going to work. I'm just a little worried that disabling the second one will have some kind of negative impact on my computer. I also have the same symptoms as the user suggested fix as mentioned in that link, but I am not sure how to go about changing the settings like they did.

It is also worth noting that this hard drive is from a previous laptop that I put into my desktop. The system boots off of one of the SSDs and the HDD that is slow is side drive. I have tried repairing and checking the integrity of the system files, defragging the drive which I thought would help, but did not. None of the services I ran reported any problems including chkdsk. Hi, if you search the forum for

you will find useful information in several threads. It may not be easy or quick to resolve. Solutions are different for different users. This was much discussed about a year ago- hardly any reports recently.

Given that, I would suggest you manually update to the AU build from1511.

Take due precautions, and create full disk images before you do so e.g. using Macrium Reflect (free) 0 disk images are strongly recommended here.

Why? People sometimes find the upgrade fails and their PC is unbootable, or they experience widely reported new issues with the AU esp. on older hardware. So your disk images (which you can then use routinely as good practice) can save you.

Could you please add your Win 10 build and Pro/Home to your specs.

Hi,

We have a new computer which we have been using for a few weeks now primarily to record from many cameras simultaneously and save to disk. Consequently, there's a lot of disk I/O and RAM usage going on.

Everything worked fine until we got a BSOD today. The crash dump says something about ntkrnlmp and svchost being responsible. I'm worried that the high disk I/O (supposed to be at 110MB/sec) and seeking (because we're saving to up to 8 different files simultaneously so the disk has to seek a lot) is causing it. If that's the case I'll change the disk writing program so that it doesn't require that much seeking, but writes everything to an interleaved file.

I'm attaching the dump files as instructed http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ns-452654.html

It's a custom build desktop system by JNCS.com with retail win7 64-bit pro, no original OS, and the computer and OS is only a few weeks old.

It's a "Intel Core i7-2600 @ 3.40GHz", "NVIDIA GeForce GT 430", "asus P8Z68 DELUXE", Power supply: unsure since I don't see anything other than a cable going directly from the computer to outlet.

Hi Folks,

I installed Windows 7 on my Windows XP pro NEC netbook to be able to make use of the Intel GMA 500 H264 AVC hardware video decoding. That works pretty well and allows 720p H.264 AVC video decoding with subtitles in real time with minor CPU usage. Now the problem is free memory.

My machine only has 1GB memory and is NON-UPGRADEABLE. I cannot add more RAM, there is no second slot and the first DIMM is soldered on apparently. Is there any way to make Windows 7 Home Premium 32 to be a little slimmer. As is it takes up most RAM and under available I get at best about 200MB. I use NOD32 as my AV and have very little running otherwise. Is it possible to make Windows 7 use less RAM? Obviously I can't buy more RAM because the machine is not upgradeable. The machine originally shipped with either Vista Basic or XP Pro and NEC in Akihabara put XP Pro for me but Intel never made drivers for H/W H.264 decoding for XP Pro hence my need to run 7. XP itself was significantly faster in startup (less than 14 seconds) and operation than 7 and less SSD use was noted
but software CPU decoding of H.264 using CoreAVC was taxing the CPU at close to 100%.

The machine still runs very fast as it has a Toshiba SSD with a slightly faster than average Atom at 1.86GHz but with so little available (not free) RAM I'm afraid Windows will destroy the SSD with frequent writes. Windows does not even see it as an SSD as it scheduled defrag for it, which I disabled.

So if anyone has any hints and sug... Read more

I am afraid there is little you can do. Some people recommend to disable some of the processes that are not needed. The problem is that you never know which ones are really not needed.

As far as the SSD goes, I would no worry about the lifetime. It will hold up longer than you will care to keep this system.

Hi.
I was using my laptop a few days ago. I left to go out and came back about an hour later. I notice my CPU usage was running @ 100% & the memory @ 80%.My laptop just stopped. I went into safe mode and that is where I am currently . I have deleted almost everything I don't use(didn't mind).I've even gone to msconfig to check off things i don't use.The initial response was good.CPU usage dropped, but as soon as I used the internet, rebooted or used an Icon everything that I discontinued in msconfig would be checked again.I did this several times.
I ran Iobit Advance system care w/ everything that it possess & ran Spyhunter all in safe mode.It did'nt come up with much.I am currently Googling for anything that match my criteria. There are a few but no good remedies. I don't have a backup disk to use to restore or else I would have tried.I am looking for any good advice. I hope that i dont have to replace the processor or the memory. I mostly use this laptop for games, emails, social media, and searches. Please help. Thanks

First off, I have been advised to start a new thread in this forum, as a previous thread in a different forum, from this site, regarding this issue was not completely resolved. See link: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/318854/physical-memory-increases-to-98-over-a-few-days/Here's what's happening. Upon booting up, it seems to take a bit too long to even to get to the Vista logo; then, when booted up, the harddrive seems to be running constantly for about an hour or so, yet nothing is loading;lastly, when the computer is on for a few days at a time, the physical memory seems to increase, eventually getting to anywhere from 75% to 90+%, yet I don't have to use the computer to do this - it can just be on and maybe just have Outlook running.Specs:OS: Vista Home Premium SP2 (x64)Processor: Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q9300 2.5GhzRAM: 4GbFree Space: 244Gb free/465Gb total

So I've been dealing with high CPU usage and physical memory usage for a while now and was wondering if anyone could help. I've been looking at windows task manager and I think I've found the culprit. I rebooted my computer just to make sure and I believe its one of the 12 svchost.exe processes running on my computer. When the computer rebooted it was fine but then after some minutes that process shot up to as much as 1,000,000k in physical memory usage right now its around 705,148k. I assume that there is my problem but I am not exactly sure so I was wondering if anyone here could help me out. Thanks.

Hello everyone, I've been having a very weird problem recently, in which I BELIEVE is involving high physical memory usage. Sometimes I will be doing things such as playing a game, or watching a stream, and my computer will run fine for a little while. But at random times, my computer will majorly slow down and sometimes even crash. If it doesn't crash, sometimes it will get so slow to the point where I have to hold down the power button and manually shut it down. Every time my computer slows down I notice it is using a TON of physical memory. It's actually happening right now. My computer is going very slow and it's using 6.22 GB memory out of 8. There are no big programs running right now, so I don't understand why it's being slow. I hope someone is able to help. Thank you for taking the time to read this!

Update: I just tried to open chrome, and the computer froze completely. It would not unfreeze. After leaving it frozen for a minute or two, the screen went black. This is becoming very frustrating.

I installed Avast months back. .

now i have newly installed Microsoft Security Essentials ..

1) when i try to uninstall Avast there is no uninstall option even in Add/Remove program it does not show up in list.

2) When i try to end process of Avast it shows me message ."Access Denied " although i am administrator
and only single user

3) What i want just to keep my CPU Usage down ( almost 5 to 10 % Max )
because i have not installed any thing to use CPU usage like 100 %

I have visual 2008 with Sqlserver 2005 and office 2007, like these

please help me to make my system proper as i used to have...

thanks

Answer:cpu usage 100 % and memory usage almost 2 gb

Having two anti-virus installed will cause problems, so first try uninstalling Avast using the utility here: http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

If that doesn't help your CPU usage, look in Task Manager to see if a process is using a lot of CPU time. FWIW I have Visual Studio Pro 2010 and noticed sqlwriter and sqlserver consuming lots of CPU so I disabled them in Services.msc since I don't use them.

CPU Usage is always good when its lower and its higher when your computer is under heavy loads just depends on well your computer can handle certain things. The more memory unused the more you can multi task I'm guessing your using Windows Vista tho? Correct?

Hi all,

I'm having a bit of trouble with Windows 8 on my laptop (I've named my laptop Romulus for future reference in this thread). First off, let me give you a brief history on Romulus' journey thus far:

1.) Bought pre-built from ACER with Windows 8 64-bit installed.
2.) After playing around with it for a bit, I formatted the C drive (deleting all partitions) and installed Windows 7.
3.) Hoping to test out the new Windows 8.1, I reinstalled Windows 8 (a clean install from Microsoft this time... not the original bundled version from ACER). I have yet to install 8.1.

This is where I've noticed a few problems. Specifically, my CPU and Disk usage keep spiking to 100% for no apparent reason. Literally right after booting Romulus, before running any programs/apps, I see these spikes. I boot up, go straight to the desktop, fire up Task Manager, and watch sadly as the performance graphs tease me with those tall lines. The CPU spikes only last for a second or two and usage generally stays pretty low, but I'd still like to know why it's jumping like that. Disk usage spikes to 99-100% more frequently and stays there a bit longer. I've noticed perhaps very slight performance problems and some mouse lag, but I haven't been able to prove a correlation here.

Regarding drivers, these problems arose without any drivers installed (straight Windows 8 installation). Thinking the obvious, I installed all of Romulus' drivers listed on the ACER web page for this model, but the problems persist... Read more

My CPU usage is going unstable and is going all over the place when I open programs like firefox. It can go up to 60% when I do something simple like play a video.
On the other hand, my memory is always at 40%+ and this is actually stable
Here is a pic.
The fact that malwarebytes is not even scanning (which takes 98% usage) and is hopping usages randomly makes it seem like its a problem. Firefox is also changing usages every second

Answer:Is my CPU usage and memory usage "normal"?

My Firefox is freduently changing, also is the Ethernet, probably about the same times. I have to keep in mind that the amount of memory/RAM is static, never changing, while the use of the RAM is dynamic, always changing. Same for the CPU, usage is always changing. With 8GB RAM I seldom see the usage at more than about half which is good, means everything is working. Now if I was getting frequent lockups I probably would keep Task Manager open to see what happens when it happens, try to get a clue as to which way to go to correct a problem.

I'm running Win XP, and I was downloading some software over the last few days for popup blockers, and I downloaded Yahoo Blocker, Google Blocker, and then ran AdAware 6 [which I've since removed to get Ad Aware SE].

Anyway, I'm having very high CPU usage, and High Memory Usage in the Windows Task Manager. I keep closing dostask.exe because it keeps using nearly 90-100% of the CPU, and it keeps maxing out my memory which is 1/2 Gig.

When I start the machine, the system runs fine, but then it begins to climb. I close it, and it climbs again, and then repeat.

I also did a search for dostask.exe and found this file: DOSTASK.EXE-25D34F68.pf located in the F:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Any help is appreciated.

Important Note: F:\ is my main drive.

Can anyone tell me what I should do?

You need to find out what is starting that dostask.exe and either remove it (if it's not something you use) or change the settings (if it's something you use). Read the stickied thread for more info.

So whats the error?

Do I have to use a different MSVCR100.DLL for Windows 10? From where do I get this?

Or does the program use another MSVCR100.dll?
I set the PATH (temporarily) to

.;<....normal PATH...>

Mind the leading dot!

So from my point of view the current local msvcr100.dll from local directory must be fetched.

Any other ideas?

Peter

Answer:How to enforce usage of MSVCR100.dll? Change from Win7--->Win10?

Installing Visual C++ should install it as well. You can use this to install all versions.

I have upgraded my lumia 535 dual sim from win8.1 to win10 2 weeks ago with insider preview 10.0.10166.0 and now my phone is using about 1 mb per minute without doing anything. I m starting my mobile data and it is being used up. Sometimes there is very high data usage like 200 mb in just 5 min only searching something in the browser. This usage is not shown in data usage details. Sometimes it is being used by the system. Please help me.

1 - If there is an MS Fixit app dedicated for that issue ?
or
1 - Appropriate folder permissions for the SRU folder

Hello, I'm running a 64 bit Windows 10 laptop. On idle, the System process is showing a high memory usage of more than 150 MB, usually more than 200 MB. Using poolmon the pooltag SpDN showed up with a memory leak. It leads to the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver, iaStorV.sys. How should I go about fixing the problem?

Answer:High memory usage / Memory leak caused by Intel driver

Hi,

Since this is a Intel driver I doubt the WDK can fix it.
You may try to see if there's a more current version of Intel's RST available for download and see if that fixes the leakage issue.

Cheers,

Hi,

I am helping my parents troubleshoot their computers.  My feeling is that they are both infected with the same virus/trojan but I can find it or figure out what is going on.

The each have identical laptops and both are experience identical problems.  Both are running Avast! and both systems are not turning up any discovered viruses or trojans during scans.  I am on the verge of completely refronting both of their laptops and am really hoping I can avoid having to do that.  I suspected that maybe they were both infected with "poweliks" but the below FRST shows (at least I think so) that neither are infected with that trojan.  I am now thinking its a memory leak on some recent driver/app update - but either trojan or memory leak, I am not finding it.

Symptoms:
After a clean reboot, within 24 to 48 hours both systems begin to get very sluggish, both audio and video starts to skip and lag, both mice bounce around like crazy when trying to move the pointer.  After about 72 hours the laptops simply freeze to the point that they have to pull the batteries to get them to shut off.

I had my Dad run FRST on his computer, below are the results:

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

Edit: Posted this on the wrong forum! DOH. Reported as this is for Windows 8, not 7.

Windows 10's message was typically IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, suspecting a driver issue I reformatted to 8.1 which I am on now. The message I'm getting now is PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.

My strongest suspect is memory, however HeavyLoad ran for 4+ hours maxing both memory and CPU before the system decided to restart. I also ran a Memtest86+ which passed multiple times. I still suspect a memory problem though as I am unable to boot the system with 4 sticks installed unless I have the XMP profile already activated. 3 sticks is fine, 2 sticks is fine, 1 stick is fine, different ports are fine. I tried different sticks in different slots and no change.

Tonight I am getting a lot of the following errors in the event log. This is while the computer was remaining idle on the login screen. I'm running WoW now and there are none to be seen.

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.

So I've had this problem for a few months with my thinkpad x220, win7 home premium 64 bit. I used ccleaner, run memtest86 multiple times, chkdsk multiple times, sfc scan multiple times, none that helped. Sfc always detects errors but always cannot fix some of them. I have mse, avast, and malwarebytes and scanned them with absolutely no results. I've run rootkit scanners with no results.

Basically after a few hours the memory use rises up to ~95% out of my 8gb, with absolutely no intensive processes running. I'll attach rammap and processexplorer screenshots. I know this is not "normal" behavior because once my ram goes over 85% the system slows down to where I can't end tasks, open new programs, even things like deleting a file take minutes. Once it reaches 90 or 95, my screen starts flashing black(kind of like if you blink fast). I have to hard restart every time this happens. This is not normal, I've had "experts" on other forums tell me its win7 using the ram to its greatest. Its not, As soon as I restart and open my usual programs(browser, steam, openoffice, winamp, utorrent) my ram is at around 30 or 40 percent. If I leave the same programs open, and just leave it on for ~4 hours the ram gets to 90% and my screen starts flashing and I have to reboot.

If you look at the rammap and process explorer shots, the most ram intensive programs are chrome and firefox, but they only use ~500mb each. Everything else is only 50-100mb and do not add up to the 7... Read more

Hi mesohamster welcome to SevenForums

First I recommend uninstalling Avast then we could go from there . Using Revo Uninstaller

Click on the app inside RevoUnistaller and choose uninstall
Click on Yes to agree you want to uninstall
If you get the builtin Uninstaller for the app use that and once you're done click Finish
Back inside RevoUninstaller click on Next
Let RevoUninstaller scan for left over registry keys . Click on Select All and choose Delete .
Once done click on Next.
Let the left over files and folders be locates then Click on Select All then click Delete then Next and you should be done .

HELP!My computer has become ridiculously slow, taking minutes to do nothing. The computer is quite old (4-5 years), but has had XP and MS Office installed fom Day 1. I have not added any other software which might explain the slowness. When the computer is slow, if I Ctrl:Alt:Delete, the CPU usage is sometimes very high (80%) or above, but not always, however, the Page file usage history is always at least 80/90% of capacity (value reads as nearly 400Mb).What is the page file usage history? Is this likely to be why my computer is slow and can any settings be changed, or do I have to bin the computer and buy one which works? Thanks

For over about a month now my DSL internet has been dropping randomly. It disconnects completely for a few seconds to fifteen minutes, then picks back up. This happens usually every twenty or so minutes, it's very random, so this is just a mode. The speed itself is not affected (when it's on, it's fine). I've been able to determine that the reason is somewhere on my desktop.

It's a HP Envy with intel i7 3.40 GHz. About a year and three months old, and using windows 8. I typically use google chrome for browsing, only occasionally firefox. I am connected to my internet wirelessly, which is broadcasted from the router a floor beneath me. The router is plugged into a phone jack, shared with the house phone (no problems with the phone what-so-ever). Tbaytel is my provider, and I use Kaspersky antivirus. Network details; Speed-72.0 mbps. Sent-13,936,*** and counting. Received- 244,015,*** and counting. Security type is WPA2-Personal, Encryption type is AES and we have a security key set up (That we recently changed to see if it would help, and of course it didn't).

This is what's scary;

Processes under the task manager brought up nothing, but looking at the Wi-fi under the Performance tab showed that something is definitely going on. The amount of Wi-fi usage spikes HUGE amounts! But at the time I took this screenshot, I was only running an antivirus full scan (which turned up nothing), google chrome on this site, and had both the task ... Read more

Answer:Internet cutting out from MASSIVE usage, but usage not accounted for.

About your new router...
How long have you been using it or since when did you got it?
How long has it been opened? Have you tried powercycling it? (Turning it off and then on)

Also, Have you tried testing it while your laptop is directly plugged in on your router with an ethernet cable? (Try speedtest.net)

Does this happen to other of your computers or device?
Does Tbaytel do line testing when you called them?

I have been having a big problem the last week with my computer. Everything is running incredibly slow. I opened the windows task manager, and it has shown very high CPU usage, often fluctuating between 80% and 100%, though sometimes staying between about 5-20%. The page file usage has been conistently high, the lowest being in the mid-600 kbs, while most often staying around 720 or 730 kbs. These patterns seem to be unaltered by the amount of programs I have running (the problem occurs even when there are absolutely no programs running) or whether I'm on the internet or not. I am very ignorant when it comes to computers, but I suspected it was some sort of spyware problem. However, after scanning with Norton 360, Spybot's Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Defender, only a few low-level threats showed up, and fixing them led to no improvement in my computer's performance. The slow functioning seems to be directly related to the times when the CPU usage is high.

My OS is Microsoft XP. My processor is 1.73 GHz. I have 504 MB of RAM. I will attach my HijackThis log below. I hope I haven't forgotten any necessary information, but I would appreciate any help you can offer. I'm becoming very frustrated.
