I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So, it seems to be only a problem with Lenovo products, and not a windows related issue from what ive read online, and seen firsthand. Im trying to dual boot linux onto my windows 8.1 using a usb, but cant seem to access or find the UEFI firmware sttings tab in bios. Ive gone to PC settings>Update and Recovery>Restart>Advanced options and nada. Every tab that should be there exept UEFI firmware.  I need to access that area of bios to boot from usb. Also clicking shift restart gives me the same results. A lengthy google search and 5 hours later I havent gotten anywhere. Ive tried configuring the bios in all different manners but still nothing. I have a Lenovo G50-80 laptop, and during my search through the web for awnsers, came across many refrences to how Lenovo edits the bios setting compared to other computer manufacters. Also worth mentioning I preformed a clean install, and I dont have this problem on my other computers, both being Asus and Windows 8.1

Answer:G50-80 - UEFI firmware setting missing in bios

Hi Cosmo42 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

You may try to access your BIOS set up from the Novo menu.

Turn off the computer and press the Novo key (number 7 page69) to turn it on. page

Reference to your system's manual : (page 28)

"How can I change the boot mode?
There are two boot modes: UEFI and Legacy Support. To change the boot mode, start the BIOS setup utility and set boot mode to UEFI or Legacy Support on the boot menu.  "

After changing to legacy then boot priority option would now be available.
Then save and exit.

Update us how it goes for you.

Regards

Sometime in the fall I started getting Windows 10 update errors trying to install 1607 (the anniversary update I believe). After trying different fixes I just ignored it for a while hoping windows would come up with a fix. 6 months later and I'd like to finally resolved this issue once and for all.

Windows Update Failure

I found I can use msinfo32 from the cmd shell to see my BIOS Mode which indicates I'm in UEFI
So I'm not entirely sure what the problem is. I did some funky things when I first built and installed Windows on this computer about a year ago. I have a 3TB Hard Drive and a 500GB SSD. And I found out I wasn't able to use all 3TB without using a GPT. Found some guide online followed the steps and fixed that issue.

I think there was an issue after that where the 3TB hard drive had the Boot part on it, and I followed some other guide to get my SSD to be the boot drive. But I think what I did then has put something in a weird state thats causing the update issue above.

Heres the Partitions
And heres using diskpart
Looking at other peoples partitions when using UEFI and GPT they have some partitions I don't have. Like MSR, System, Recovery etc... but mine just has the one single Primary partition. Recommended UEFI-Based Disk-Partition Configurations What I also find weird is that my boot partition is Disk 1 instead of Disk 0. If I unplug the HDD and boot the computer, then the SSD becomes Drive 0 but the update still fails.

Unfortunately I'm in that place... Read more

Specs: I am running pre-built computer with i5-4430 cpu, antec basiq 550w psu, seagate barracuda hdd 2tb, windows 8.1, a MS-7826 (Kaili) mobo made by msi, and a xfx 7850 gpu. I installed the gpu and psu myself.
What I am trying to do is get to my bios and disable the secure boot so that I am able to install ubuntu. I plan to dual boot Ubuntu and windows 8. However, when I try clicked on the UEFI Firmware Settings my computer than started to emit three long beeps and stops displaying anything to my monitor. This happened to me before earlier in the year as well. What I did then was unplugged my gpu and the beeping stopped. I was ghen able to go on my pc, do a system restore, and all was well. I just never touched the setting again. Then today( totally forgetting about this experience) click on it again and the problem came back. I have done basic trouble shooting and am stumped as to what I should do. I have restarted my computer, unplugged from wall, changed outlets, cleaned pc, tested the gpu on my brothers pc, looked up the beeps meaning ( apparently it is either a "keyboard error" or specific error code to the mother and I can not find the manual. I have also tested the gpu on my brothers rig and it has worked fine. I have uninstalled and re installed the drivers as well. It has also worked completely fine up until this point and I was able to get expected quality in game as well. The card is also less than a year old. Now I could system restore again but I woul... Hi There,

I just built a desktop with a sabertooth x79 motherboard, and am running Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit. When I click the UEFI BIOS Firmware live tile via the change PC settings>update and recovery>recovery>etc. my computer reboots normally to Windows and will not open BIOS. I have tried accessing it using the delete and f2 keys, but this does nothing either.

Any ideas? I am up to date in terms of my BIOS, and am definitely running UEFI and not legacy.

Thank you so much.

710-14IKB with WIndows 10 Pro.I just wanted to post back on my experience with the update mess that accompanied this laptop release. Until 15 minutes ago, I was running on BIOS v2.01 but Windows showed that something wrong with the driver for 'Lenovo UEFI System Firmware 1.28' in device manager. Following Windows' suggestion I let it search for an update. It said the one currently installed is the best. In 'Devices and Printers' I let Windows 'troubleshoot' the laptop. It said the same thing but offered to reinstall the same drivers. After a reboot, I still got the same warning about the Firmware 1.28. Then I noticed that a newer BIOS version was available (v2.03). I installed the BIOS update and rebooted (with fingers crossed). After the reboot it STILL showed an issue with the Firmware 1.28 BUT after letting it reinstall again the error went away!!! So it looks like they are tied together. the Firmware reinstall didn't work until I had BIOS v2.03 installed. What do *I* take away from all of this?Lenovo really needs to work on its QA. Just booting up any one of these laptops with v2.00 or earlier BIOS would have shown anyone who isn't deaf that it's NOT ready to ship. Then we've got this firmware-BIOS-driver dance to get everything working properly without errors. My guess is that Lenovo performed little to no time testing when the new (IKB) versions came out, relying on the same drivers and firmware that worked for the old (ISK) model. Note, for those who are... I'm looking for a Windows API call (or some other "programatic method) to reboot PC into the firmware (BIOS/UEFI) setup/configuration screen.
I'm writing an installer application (in c++), and as part of that application, I would like to reboot the PC firmware (BIOS/UEFI) setup/configuration screen.
Anyone know anything that might work, or any place I could look for this information???
NOTE: Windows 10 has a UI that does this, and I have seen it done from other installers, so I know it's possible.

Hello my friends ! A time ago i bouhgt two Lenovo ideapad 100 14 IBY (FreeDos Version) and install Windows 10 on it with UEFI and GPT Partition Table. All works fine until i want to play around with Linux and install UBUNTU Mate in UEFI on one of them. The install was easy but the Performance on Ubuntu with Bay Trail and the don't working Bluetooth was a reason to switch back to Windows 10. After that the Problem beginns. The Bios don't let me save changes anymore (only time and date !). There was no UEFI ESP and GPT Support since i install UBUNTU and the Bios Menu looks like that:Bios Entries on a blank DiskBootingThe Disk is Blank there is no ubuntu on there (Don't know waht the EFI Entries are no Hardware is connected). And when I boot also go to Network Boot there.(No Matter a USB Stick is connected). So what i did: # I Dismantle it and disconnect Battery and Cell and wait half an hour. # Nothing changes !# I change the HDD. # Nothing changes !# Reflash the BIOS by edit the plattform.ini - CheckByBios=1 - Error Cannot mount EFI Partition. # Nothing changes !# Install Windows 10 - Make mbr2gpt.exe and bcdedit and bootrec. # Nothing changes ! I can install and run Windows 10 in MBR and BIOS Mode on it. But no USB Stick was displayed in Boot Menu. So now Iam on my Limit and the Question is there a way to put UEFI and GPT back on it or does the BIOS locked in this State. For me UEFI is MALEWARE so why can a simple UBUNTU damaged my BIOS and ... I don't know if anyone has tried to contact ASUS support but impossible. FWIW sorry I went with this ASUS board but from reading ASUS now makes about 80 percent of all boards. Hope we can get some competition from the good ole USA and show them how its done.

In discussion with American Megatrends today, found out they sell their base BIOS to MOBO manufacturers and then the BIOS manufacturers modify it to their liking. IMHO, who modified this BIOS for ASUS must of had a nightmare the night before.

I found two numbers for this BIOS.
I "think" they relate to each company as follows:
-- ASUS ver 2202
-- American Megatrends ver. 2.16.1240

=========== My Questons ===================

1) If someone has this board and BIOS can they explain to me when I should set the CSM for UEFI when running Windows 7?
2) My BIOS shows Boot Secure Enabled but I can't figure out how to turn it off and this "Secure Boot" choice cannot be toggled.
Is their some setting elsewhere I need to set in order to toggle "Secure Boot"?

3) Under PCH Storage Configuation they indicate this item will automatically detect between M.2 devices and SATA devices. What are M.2 devices?

4) Under SATA Mode Selection (AHCI)
this has a setting of IDE, AHCI, and RAID. With a SATA boot drive and setting to IDE, Windows 7 will Not load. I iniitally thought that if I had a non-boot IDE drive attached that needed to be set for it (the IDE), obviously Not. Any ... Read more

So heres my problem, i wont lie my z580 aint new one , its been guess already 2-3 years; well for the first year, remember being able to change uefi settings, but then it somehow was unchangeable; however i didnt think that it ll be an issue, i mean no big deal, at least not worthy to register in forums or contacting support center as m tooo lazy; well then 2-3 days ago i accidentally deleted windows 8 boot entry, and its not big deal as with cmd u can back it up, however i tried with shift + reboot automatic repair first as i knew if i turn pc off i wdnt be able to boot as no bios option available and thought automatic repair is guaranteed option however it turned out that automatic repair cdnt fix it and it made me reboot, and thats how i got stuck and not being able to change anything, whenever u boot it says bcd is missing, and only available option is esc=change uefi settings which ll just reboot and endless loop, i tried every combination keys to try to discover that bios key, nothing, and here is the problem even if i try to repair with windows 8 cd it wont boot it, it ll just keep saying bcd is missing as i cant prioritize cd rom over hdd; so after rampaging for 5 hours i discovered some new option, it turns out that novo button actually works but instead of pressing it when laptop is booting u have to press it while its turned off, and then 4 new menus but after trying them all i discovred that they dont function as well at least half of them , as bios setup and norm... I have an Ideapad Z585. My hard drive is having problems (won't boot), so I want to boot from a DVD or USB. Problem is, when I change the boot order in the BIOS (UEFI) to put the optical drive ahead of the hard disk, that setting won't save (although others do). When I exit the BIOS and look again, the boot order setting has returned to the original (hard drive first) setting.  **bleep**?? This means that if my hard drive is present, it will ALWAYS be used to boot from, which of course ALWAYS fails. There is no way to fix the hard disk because I can't boot anything else. This is a serious bug in the BIOS / UEFI.

Answer:Z585 can't save BIOS / UEFI boot order setting

Are you also disabling secureboot in BIOS before changing the boot order?  Hopefully the following thread will help;

Hello NikosGr, Windows 8 is still a new Operating System, therefore glitches still need to be worked out in future updates. Make sure to go to Lenovo's support website and see if there are any drivers for those devices for Windows 8. Try the Windows 7 drivers too as some of those will work with Windows 8. As for the Broadcom card being slow, they are decent cards, but not the best. I've had issues with mine when I first got my laptop. Hope that helps.

after formatting ssd from my old system and formatting and installing windows 7 my system booted up i installed mb drivers and grphics drivers without any problem but then on reboot my ssd suddenly disappeared from the bios leaving only my cd/dvd drive.
In ez bios there is a setting to see all sata ports and the ssd had completely gone the system booted up ok (still without the ssd showing in bios) but after several boots stopped; and would only goto the bios screen showing only my cd/dvd drive in boot options.
I reinstalled the system another couple of times and this continues to happen also in disk management (computer managemnt) the ssd now shows as being ntfs as in the first install it showed as efi

any advice would be a great help as i am now at a loss

Answer:ssd goes missing on uefi bios after indows 7 install

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals,

Boot into BIOS setup, reset to defaults, save changes. Leave overclocking turned off. (If an EFI BIOS you'll need to decide if you want UEFI BIOS vs. Legacy BIOS. If UEFI follow these special steps for Install, otherwise enable Legacy BIOS or Compatibility Support Module to proceed with normal install.) Set DVD drive first to boot, HD second, set SATA controller to AHCI, Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into Windows 7 installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO for your licensed OS version here.

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now, then Custom install to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

After install you can adjust partition size or Create new partitions for data, etc. in Disk Mgmt. You are creating the partition here for the purpose of wiping the HD and marking Active which overcomes certain install failures.

The only solution we found around it is to downgrade the BIOS to A12, and then they are back.
Is this a miss from Dell? Cant image they did this on purpose.

Recently my organisation deployed ~500 X360 G2 devices which unfortunately have the bright F5 key issue.  This can be resolved by changing the bios setting on each device, however I am looking for a way to deploy this setting over the network to all devices.  I have attempted to use the HP Bios Configuration Utility, however it does not appear to support this setting.  Is there any other way I could deploy this setting?

Scenario:
Upgraded Video Card from GTX 560 Ti to GTX 1060 Strix, machine boots but no video output or just black/blank screen.

Did a bit of online research and realize that two ways of fixing this
1. Change PCI setting to Legacy in BIOS/UEFI
2. Update to latest BIOS.

I decided to try and update BIOS to latest BETA (13w) using @bios from Windows. Everything went ok, reboots fine and still does now with Windows loading no problem, BUT i can't get to BIOS/UEFI???

All i get is the UEFI empty blue screen, no menus/options, just blank screen...

So i thought maybe i can reverse back to previous BIOS from windows but program wouldn't allow this. I tried sticking BIOS file in USB but the problem is i can't get to BIOS.

I Have tried running backup BIOS as board has two, but still same problem.

How can I get UEFI Firmware for MY XPS 8700?  I have the latest windows 10 Pro (64-bit) version and the primary disk is upgraded to GPT vs MBR.  The system now boots to EFI, but the F2 Post Key still takes me to the old Legacy BIOS.  There are so many great settings in the UEFI Firmware for my Inspiron 17 (5767) laptop that I'd like to have the same capability for my XPS 8700.

Answer:XPS 8700 UEFI Firmware

Short answer is you don't.  The BIOS/UEFI system is generally setup however Dell and the BIOS manufacturer want it to be.  Its also possible your laptop may have access to features or functions your XPS 8700 does not have, hence why its not there.

I bought a Lenovo
It has an UEFI firmware associated with Windows 8 OS protecting it by secure Boot feature.
When i boot in recovery mode i could see an option saying about UEFI software/hardware.

I used GParted and deleted ALL its partitions.
I installed 8 again with my partitonign.
No UEFI present there and no option on the recovery menu as before.
How can i re-associate UEFI firmware with Win8 OS as it was when i bough it?
What's the reason of UEFI existance anyway? In what ways can it be usefull?

Answer:UEFI firmware associated with Windows 8

To have the options to enable Secure Boot, you need to do a UEFI install from UEFI-capable media (DVD, FAT32-formatted USB key, UEFI-compatible PXE network boot) onto a machine with UEFI enabled. If you installed from media that wasn't a DVD, FAT32 USB key, or a PXE boot from a UEFI-capable boot server, you actually installed in BIOS mode (the Compatibility Support Module, or CSM, is activated in the UEFI OS to allow this). Also, your partitions need to be GPT partitions, not MBR, so if you created MBR partitions during the installation (even if you installed from proper media and selected the UEFI boot option to do so) you still won't have a UEFI install.

From what you're seeing, you have a BIOS CSM install, not a UEFI install, so you've done something wrong (you might need to boot to a boot option menu on the Lenovo to select a "UEFI" boot option versus a normal one, for instance). And there are a lot of benefits to UEFI over BIOS (security being only one of them), and most of them relate to boot and runtime performance of certain components and drivers.

I was trying to recover/reinstall win 7 and bring back my asus laptop to its manufacture state. When I run the recovery media (recovery dvd) that comes with my asus laptop and after answering the prompts, it gives off "missing operating system" message on an entirely black screen. I tried to go to the bios setting by hitting delete key upon boot-up but it does not respond. I switched off and back on several times trying the delete key every time but to no avail. Please help. It's an ASUS N61J Series with intel i7. I need this very badly! Thanks...

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Have you tried using the computer's recovery partition as it sounds as though the recovery disc may be corrupted?

To use the recovery partition you need to start your computer and tap the F8 key then select the repair computer option from the advanced boot menu. Follow the prompts to format your drive and restore your computer to its factory state.

A few months ago I purchased a new Lenovo ThinkCentre M73 Small Form Factor desktop computer. It has Windows 7 Professional preinstalled.  I am thinking of updating to Windows 10. My M73 has a regular BIOS.  Can it be changed to UEFI, and would there be an advantage in doing so?Also, I am planning to install an SSD and move the OS to the SSD and use the HDD for extra storage. I think this would be a significant improvement to the system speed and faster boot up.  I have done it on older desktops I own.Thank you in advance to anyone with good advice.

Answer:M73 ThinkCentre: Can BIOS be changed to UEFI, and is there an advantage to UEFI?

M73 SFF (&Tower) does have a UEFI setting, it is not the default (compatibility mode).   I changed it to UEFI to boot a MemTest86 CD to run the latest v6 tests:  What's New in MemTest86 for the UEFI platform (Version 5 and later)?

I am trying to update the UEFI firmware on this laptop as the version it came with seems to be having issues with many operating systems I try out on it. It hangs when booting with the latest version of Linux (4.8 as of writing) which means I am stuck with the LTS banch (4.4 as of writing) and it refuses to boot any other operating system I try out on it. For example, FreeBSD shows a jumbled, unreadable mess after getting past the boot screen. So I looked up the article on the HP website about updating the BIOS and, following the video instructions, I went to the HP Support page and downloaded the BIOS installer for my laptop and placed it on an old desktop I have running Windows (Vista and XP, I tried both). I accepted the license agreement but instead of asking me where I wanted to save the installer files like it says in the video, it showed the following error messages: Error

I upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 (32Bit), Since, I have lost access to my DVD drive. The Device Manager shows:

The drive has always been connected and worked fine with Windows 7; the hardware has never been altered or messed about with.

So I decided to check the UEFI Firmware Settings via Settings>Recovery>Advanced Set Up>Troubleshoot>Advanced Options I don't get the option to enter UEFI Firmware Settings; All I get is the System Restore, System Image Recovery, Startup Repair, Command Prompt and Startup Settings

Any help on resolving this issue this will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Try downloading and installing latest chipset drivers directly from Intel/AMD. This should also update the drivers for the SATA controller and help your DVD drive detected properly.

I couldn't find any information in the tech specs if the ThinkPad x121e will have UEFI support.Does anyone know if the x121e is ready for UEFI (just like the X220.) - Jonas

Answer:ThinkPad x121e with or without UEFI Firmware?

It does. The BIOS actually supports Legecy and UEFI, you can switch which loads first or set the BIOS only to load one or the other.  The option is under Startup.
The default is to load UEFI first, but if the OS doesn't support it, it will load Legacy support (for XP etc...)

Does this model (from around 2010) have UEFI firmware? I don't see any indication that it does, with Windows reporting that the "BIOS Mode" is "Legacy." I don't see any legacy BIOS emulation switches in the BIOS setup either. But out of paranoia, could it be the case that it does have UEFI firmware, but I've caused it to be permanently in legacy emulation mode or something? Confusingly, the support website offers an enigmatically named "HP BIOS Update UEFI." Could it be that some update (which I haven't been able to install) changes it from one thing to another?

This is the error message I am getting when I turn it on.

Error code: 0xc0000185

You'll need to use the recovery tools on your installation media. If you don't have installation media ( like disc

Press enter to try again

Press F8 for startup settings

press esc for UEFI firmware settings

Unfortunately, I don't have the installation media is was never shipped with my purchased.

I am having a perplexing issue after doing a clean install of Windows 8 on a 256GB SSD where I can not get into the "UEFI Firmware Settings" Tile in Advanced Options. Basically, when trying to enter the EFI/BIOS via: Settings in Charms / PC Settings / General / Advanced Startup / Restart Now / Troubleshoot / Advanced optons I do not see the "UEFI Firmware Settings" tile to get into the UEFI/BIOS!

My machine (which only has (1) hard drive) is an Asus N56VZ and came pre-installed with Windows 8 on the factory 750GB 7200rpm HDD. I cleanly reinstalled the OS on to a new 256GB SSD via an OEM copy on a disc and all seemed basically OK except that sometimes when getting to the Login screen it would freeze and the cursor would not be flashing, I could not enter my password nor shut down via the power icon on the bottom left of the screen. I would then have to hold down the power button to shut off the machine. This freezing of the login screen would be intermitent where most of the time I could enter my password but maybe 20% or so of the time I could not log in.

Due to that bug I decided to securely erase the SSD and once again reinstall Windows 8 and now I have this issue where in the Advanced Options menu there is only (5) tiles/options present and not the usual (6) as the "UEFI Firmware Settings" functionality is now missing!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Yesterday, at the BlackHat Asia 2017 security conference, researchers from cyber-security firm Cylance disclosed two vulnerabilities in the firmware of Gigabyte BRIX small computing devices, which allow an attacker to write malicious content to the UEFI firmware.

During their presentation, researchers installed a proof-of-concept UEFI ransomware, preventing the BRIX devices from booting, but researchers say the same flaws can be used to plant rootkits that allow attackers to persist malware for years.

I note that the new W520 series of laptops is capable of supporting UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Boot. But... for some reason, UEFI boot does not seem to be the choice that has been pre-selected by Lenovo for the configuration of the computer when it is shipped to the customer, ready to use with the Windows 7 operating system installed.  Recently, I tried changing the BIOS setting in my computer to UEFI boot only, and the computer would not boot.  So, I changed it back to 'legacy boot', which is how the computer was configured when Lenovo shipped it to me in August. From what I understand (I'm not an expert), the UEFI boot supposedly offers some advantages - apparently the computer is supposed to boot up faster when using this technology. Can anyone tell me why Lenovo does not configure the computers to use the UEFI boot when they ship them?  Are there any disadvantages associated with using the UEFI boot? If I purchase a new (replacement) hard drive for the primary bay in my W520 and do a clean install of Windows 7 with the computer configured to use the UEFI boot (prior to building the clean install), will I have the ability to revert to the legacy boot process later - using this same drive - if for some reason I need to do so? Many thanks in advance to anyone who can provide me with a brief overview of the advantages and disadvantages of this UEFI boot technology. Michael

UEFI addresses some of the limitations of the original BIOS design which dates from the IBM 5150 (PC1) which used the 16-bit Intel 8088 CPU. Some of the items are to remove the 2.2 TB boot disk limitation, 4 partitions, etc. Here's the WIKI that addresses this further: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface

Hi all,I'm in the need of restoring my Ideapad A10 model 20323 (loaned it to a friend who - genius - erased the internal sdcard to install a rom without backing up the disk).Nothing serious I said: it's simply a matter of downloading the firmware from Lenovo servers.Surprisingly, I couldn't find anything.I realize that the Ideapad A10 is an old model, but I think that Lenovo servers are big eneough to host the firmware of a discontinued model. Moreover, the netbook always worked well: so what should I do ? Throw it away only because of lack of such an easy remedy like downloading the restore image ?I am simply asking for what I paid for: the ability to use the product I purchased.I am confident that Lenovo will soon resolve this issue and will upload the firmware.

Answer:Firmware for Ideapad A10

Sorry, realized that i posted in the wrong section; can a mod move it in the right one please ?

Hello, I have a T420 4180-LVP, and recently I updated the bios to 1.43 (I think it was this update that caused my discomfort) and am no longer able to perform the boot for install (with dvd or usb, none of the right) windows 8 when I enable UEFI Only in bios. How do I install windows 8 secure boot on my thinkpad?

Answer:T420 4180-LVP bios 1.43 not boot to install windows 8 with bios options UEFI Only

Hi, carlosrrjr

In the BIOS, there should be a settiing for Secure Boot, and it is likely set to Enabled. If this is set to Disabled, and the Boot Order settings are set properly, then you should be able to boot from external devices like a DVD. Just make sure the Optical Drive appears before the Hard Drive in the boot menu.

Hope it helps,
Adam

I have a Dell Latitude D630. It has an admin password for the bios. Nothing is locked except for the settings. I can't change any of the settings in the bios. It lets me boot to windows just fine though. My question is, since I don't know that admin password for the bios, if I upgrade the bios firmware, will the admin password be deleted? Since I'm flashing the bios, I would think that all the settings will be lost. Is that the case?

Answer:Will upgrading the bios firmware on a Latitude D630 delete the bios admin password?

What?

Didn't you reply here, and say it worked (after the unusual 9th try ) http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic109612-109.html#post747024

Awfully strange!

A bios update can't remove passwords. As You Must Know

Oh and thanks for the extended long Title. I'm thinking this Topic of yours would be best removed? What do you think?

BUG: bios hang when external usb cd connected and bios uefi usb support enabled http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11431632#post11431632 Hi;just tried to boot from external usb cd - and it hangs the w520 bios completely;the only way to boot at all (say from internal hdd) with external usb cd still connectedis to disable uefi usb cd support in bios, which makes cd unusable for boot, but then this external usb cd still works ok under linux;I am curious if anyone has a workaround for this?I am running on bios v 1.32thanks;Andrei.

Answer:BUG: bios hang when external usb cd connected and bios uefi usb support enabled

There are four USB ports on the W520 and they are not created equal.  Are you using the powered yellow port?

Hello,
When I press Restore Settings button in BIOS setting (through F2 when Dell logo is displayed at booting) then the dialog with two options is shown:

BIOS Defaults
Factory Settings

What is the difference about these two options (BIOS Defaults vs. Factory Settings) please?
Thank you.

Hello together, i have a problem with our System X3650 M4 Server, Machinetype Model: 5462G2G. I downloaded an imm and an uefi update file from the lenovo website.First i updated imm through the imm2 website remotly.Update did go as planned, i restarted th imm2 and after about 5 minutes the new imm2 was working an accessible,Then i tried to update the uefi bios from version 1.01 to 2.31 , also via the IMM2 -> Servermangement -> Server Firmware -> Firmware upgrade option.I Uploaded the new file lnvgy_fw_uefi_tce128i-2.31_anyos_32-64.upd, then started the upgrade process. It went through fine, and after the sucess information i was prompted to restart the OS.After 30 minutes, the server was still in System State = running in uefi mode. When i checked back to the server management -> Server firmware rab, it said UEFI Primary, Status pending, Version 2.31.Then i "powered off" the server, and restarted it 5 minutes later. All status boxes are green, but system status is still in "system running in UEFI " Mode, it wont start with the OS (VMware) Does anyone have an idea how to fix the problem. The Server also has a secondary bank with the old bios version  1.01 , how can i switch back to this backup BIOS? Many thanks in advance, i am getting a bit desperate here. The server should be operational tomorrow morning again.

I picked up a WRT54GL a week or so back after someone recommended I pick one up instead of picking up a PCI wifi card and external antenna to pick up a relatively week wireless connection.

A bit of background info: I live in a park of apartments owned by my university. They came up with the ingenius idea to install wireless APs through the park, so residents could pick up a wireless connection in their apartments and they wouldn't need to run ethernet through all the buildings. Great, right? Yeah, except they ran out of money in this project and the APs are not powerful enough to penetrate into the apartments and give a strong signal. So this is where the DD-WRT enabled router comes in.

I don't have a whole lot of experience with wireless network, outside of setting up small home networks in the past. I messed with the DD-WRT firmware a bit, and have successfully bridged the network to one of the wireless APs in the apartment complex. Only real problem with that is I'm fairly certain they don't want me doing that because they have no control over my router if it decides to go a bit batshit crazy. I'm willing to do it if its my only option, though I can only get 10mbps (if even that) when transferring files from my computer to another through the access point. I'd like to setup the router to essentially be like any home router, but instead of using the WAN port to get its Internet connection, it'll use the AP signal I set.

Answer:Setting up a router using the DD-WRT firmware.

Having run a pair of WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware in the past, let me share my experiences:
Here is how I would configure that router in your situation

1. Setup in bridged mode. This is really the only way to do it, as the linksys routers don't seem to support AP Client mode (a feature of a lot of standalone access points). You can't setup anything more fancy like WDS, because you don't own the other router.
2. Go into the VLAN configuration and set the WAN port on your router to be on the same VLAN as your LAN ports. You now have a 5-port switch instead of a 4-port
3. Head over to the advanced options, and crack up your transmit power. 100mw seems to be a nice level before the router starts to have overheating problems
4. If you're only getting 10mbit, that's just how good of a signal you are getting. You can try getting the high-gain add-on antennas from linksys. One thing that i've seen work well is building a parabolic-style reflector out of aluminum foil to put behind your router, opposite the AP you are connecting to. You are trying to make your omnidirectional router into as directional of a device as possible. Hooking up cantenna or other yagi-type anntenas to get a better signal is also a a possibility.
5. If you plan on doing any bittorrent or other filesharing, make sure you have the maximum number of concurrent connections set, and a lower than normal timeout. These routers don't play very nice with those protocols until you do t... Read more

Hi Guys
I restored an image created with Macrium Reflect on my wife's computer (Custom build with Asus P8Z77-V LX mother board) and everything went fine until rebooting when i got to the "Please press DEL or F2 to enter UEFI BIOS settings" then everything stopped.
I have tried F2 DEL F8 F12 just about all the F combinations and nothing works, I have two SSD drives one with Win7 Pro and one with Win10 Pro (not connected at the same time) and neither of them will boot up.
I have tried changing the jumper pins from 1 and 2 to 2 and 3 for 10 sec to clear the RTC Ram in CMOS then returned then to 1 and 2 and tried rebooting...no change so i removed the battery and repeated the jumper pin swap then reinstalled the battery and still no change, cannot get passed press DEL or F2 to access the BIOS settings.
I even downloaded the latest BIOS and updater as shown and put them on a USB flash drive together and tried the Macrium Rescue disk, and still nothing happened and it will not open the BIOS maybe i got it all wrong ?
I was hoping someone here might know how to put it right, i am out of idea's and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I have an Ideapad100-14iby, BIOS version CCN18WW V2.04. I run openSuse 42.2 on it, I installed it in the past via a USB stick. Obviously that worked. Now I want to do another install, but whenever I try to run the usb install and hit F12 to get into the boot menu and select EFI: USB Boot I get an error message that there is a problem. But no details. I tried various sticks, all the same.  Does anyone have an idea? I am especially puzzled because the old installation worked and I am not doing anything different - I think. A bit of search revealed that some hardware support 64 bit OS, but only a 32 bit UEFI. Can someone say what the situation on my laptop is? And if only 32 bit UEFI what I can do. thanks! K.

Hi, I just bought a Z580 with Windows 8 pre-installed. First, I shrunk the C: partition and created another partition for Windows 7, though I couldn't boot the installer, I got this error:"Secure Boot - Image failed to verify with *ACCESS DENIED*. Press any key to continue" After some googling and etc. I thought this isn't a problem with my windows 7 installation disk and there is an issue with uefi firmware. Then I found this:http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTIyOTgSo I am assuming Z580 is in the same boat as this one. And probably many other models... I also tried Ubuntu 12.10, had the same annoying error. Is this going to be fixed by any chance? If not, are there any workarounds for using operating systems alongside Windows 8 on these Lenovo laptops?

Answer:Ideapad Z580 UEFI problem

I am having the exact same problem on a Ideapad U410.  Now I get the error every time I boot and can no longer get to the BIOS settings.

Hi gays, I have ideapad y510p .I do all this steps to boot from USB but it boot to hdd  Start with a blank USB key of at least 4GB capacity. To install Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 8 in UEFI mode, the 64-bit versions of the respective operating system DVD media will be required.  A full Windows 7 or Windows 8 DVD media is required.  An upgrade DVD may not function correctly during base operating installs.   To create UEFI bootable USB media that can be used to install Microsoft Windows 7 or Windows 8 64-bit operating systems on Lenovo ThinkPad, ThinkCentre, ThinkStation or ThinkServer computers, complete the following steps: 1)   Open a Command Prompt with Administrator privileges in either Windows 7 Pro or Windows 8 Pro.2)   Insert the target USB boot media device into an available USB port.3)   Type "DiskPart" in the command prompt.4)   Type "List Disk? (make note of the disk number of the target USB drive).5)   Type "Select Disk X?, where X is the target USB drive noted in step 4.6)   Type "Clean?.7)   Type "Create Partition Primary?.8)   Type "format FS=fat32 quick?.9)   Type "Active?.10) Type "Assign".11) Type "list volume".12) Type "Exit". Now copy the entire contents of the desired operating system onto the newly created UEFI boot media device. If the AUTORUN.INF file fails to copy from the Windows DVD media to the USB key, then use Notepad to create a new ... Answer:Why can't I boot from a USB key on UEFI Ideapad systems?

Hello and welcome,

Which OS are you trying to boot? Windows 7 or 8?  If you're trying to boot Win 7 go to BIOS and turn off secure boot. Leave UEFI boot enabled and also make sure CSM support is enabled.

Start with SP1 media.  If you're using pre-SP1 media, some additional manipulation of the files on the USB drive is required - IIRC.

Z.
