I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There are a number of posts about this problem on another forum, but I figured I would start one here to make sure Lenovo is aware of it. Since the arrival of my 2017 x1 carbon, the touchpad has had what appears to be some sort of driver issue. The pad works fine for a few minutes after restart, then randomly it starts to have some sort of issue where it starts freezing up each time you lift your finger and put it down again. The tap to click feature no longer functions, and the cursor jumps around randomly as well. These problems go away after a restart, but will start again after ~5-10 minutes of use. It makes the computer pretty much unusable and is extremely frustrating. The only thing I've found to help is disabling the trackpoint in the synaptics settings, which brings back the tap to click, but doesn't help with the freezing issue. This also disables the physical buttons above the touchpad, which is a big part of what I love about thinkpad hardware! The problem happens on both the lenovo supplied windows 10 pro install, as well as a fresh install of windows 10 pro, both using the drivers supplied on Lenovos website. The specs for my machine are below. If anyone else is experiencing this or has any info please respond with which x1 specs youre running and anything you may have tried. Im also curious if anyone is NOT experiencing this issue, which could indicate it might not be entirely software related. X1 Carbon 2017I5-7300U512 nVME PCIe SSDWindows 10 Pro x64... Read more

I made the purchase of the computer on August 07.After the traditional start, with Windows pro updates, I realized that the tocuhpad did not work properly. At times it worked and in other cases it was disabled, for this reason I had to do all the initial configuration with the Trackpoint and then with an external mouse.I proceeded to perform Lenovo Companion software and driver updates, where several features were updated.I reviewed several Lenovo forums, in English, to learn about a possible similar problem and its solution.I tried to solve the problem by checking that the BIOS was activated both the Trackpoint and the Touchpad, but it did not work.Later I tried to configure the functions with the mouse and touch panel option from Control Panel, but both functions are activated, trackpoint and tocuhpad. The final step was to uninstall the mouse and touchpad drivers, and look for the new drivers from the Lenovo web. In particular Synaptics ThinkPad UltraNav Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad.With all these steps, I have not been able to activate the Tocuhpad, and I do not consider something Good, that a new computer has these drawbacks.

There is another thread documenting freezing issues with the touchpad, that seem to be resolved with the latest driver update. One problem, however, that the driver update has not resolved for me, is that small and precision finger movements on the touchpad initially move the cursor correctly, but the cursor snaps back to its original location once the finger is lifted from the touchpad. This only happens for very small movements, but it creates very frustrating situations. For instance, trying to move the cursor slightly to place it on a button, only to have the cursor move away from the button once a tapping gesture is attempted. This seems to be a driver issue. The solution I have found is to disable "allow taps on the touchpad" option in Windows 10. This option is found in the settings menu of Windows 10. Once this is disabled, snap back no longer occurs, but of course, the user can no longer tap the touchpad. Is anyone else having this problem?

Hi!I just got a new "X1 Carbon 5th Gen - Kabylake (Type 20HR, 20HQ)" and a "X1 Carbon Thunderbolt 3 Dock". I have an external screen connected to the dock and it works fine (VGA connection). I also have an other monitor with display (DP) connection that I want to use. But my computer can't find the other monitor, only the one with VGA connection. Is there any easy ways to fix this problem?Best regards

I started having issues with the ultranav middle button. It works when i start the computer but after a few minutes of scrolling up and down it does not work anymore.  The only way to have it function again is to either restart (which will again only work for a few minutes) or use a bluetooth mouse to uncheck and check the mouse settings for trackpoint which that too will work for a few minutes only. I've updated the bios and updated the driver. Still not stable. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Hello forum! I bought Lenovo Thinkpad Carbon X1 2017 (black) laptop with the FHD screen a few months ago and now I want to upgrade to the WQHD screen. Is this still possible? How much would it cost to change the screen on my laptop? For more information, I live in New York City, New York and I am willing to visit a certified Lenovo outlet in the city to make this happen. Please let me know who to contact / which number to call. I'm very happy with the machine but I do wish that the screen had a higher resolution.  Thank you for your help! Wishing you a pleasant day ahead.

I recently fully restored my Windows 10 Pro on my tx1c5 (kabylake 20HQ).I was installing new drivers and charging at once. The fan was pretty loud so decided to install BIOS Update Utility ver 1.22.It helped however when laptop turned on it stopped charging.I installed other recommended drivers from lenovo site (like power management or thuderbolt ones) but none of them worked. I didn't install drivers from sections Enterprise Management and responsible for storage. Should I?Then tried to restore system once again, but windows won't allow me without connected AC. System recovery doesn't work as well. Also, tried to look in BIOS settings, but unfortunetly couldn't found anything that would help.I don't think it is a charger problem becouse it is quite new, and the problem appeared just after BIOS update.I have 50% battery left and don't know what to do when it will be gone to 0 .I will add that both usb-c ports don't work. Can't test them with external storege, becouse i have none.Do You have any ideas? Would appreciate some solutions!

Hi, I don't have the touchpad issues which are mentioned in this thread. My touchpad is working fine except it goes into hibernate. So if I wake up my device and the system wants me to log in into Win 10 the touchpad still needs some time until it reacts. It feels like it is deactivated for some time. After about 5-7 seconds it is working fine. Are there any suggestions to solve that problem? I have the new Bios 1.20 installed and I am also using the current Synaptics Driver 19.3.4.86. Thanks

Because I didn't liked USB 3.0 ethernet chipsets and USB-based ethernet cannot bear some network-intensive tasks, I wanted to use PCIe-based Thunderbolt ethernet controller on my XPS 15 9550. As there is no Thunderbolt 3 "PCIe" ethernet adapter (except docks), I chose to buy Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter and Thunderbolt 2-based ethernet adapter.
I plugged it into the XPS 15 9550 (tested with BIOS 1.1.19, 1.2.14, 1.2.16 and latest Thunderbolt firmware with NVM version 16), and the PCIe device did not pop up. Instead, only USB billboard device is appearing saying that "Alternate Mode configuration not attempted". Both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.10 failed to detect the device. I moved this configuration to MSI GS63 laptop, and it detected ethernet controller successfully (that laptop utilizing NVM firmware version 18).
It seems that other vendors are affected with lower NVM firmware version involving setup with Thunderbolt adapter: see the case of Lenovo too. Do you have planned Thunderbolt NVM firmware update for XPS 15 9550? Looks like XPS 13 9360 is using newer Thunderbolt NVM firmware version, though.

Hi, I have a ThinkPad X1 Carbon 3G 20BSCTO1W and within the last month or so started having start up issues. Basically, I will press the power button and will get stuck at the "Starting Windows" screen forever. When I shutdown (by holding the power button), restart, and press enter to go into repair mode, I've been able to get by by doing a system restore to February 12th. Laptop will seem 100% functional and fine until I shut down my computer and need to turn it on again or I close my laptop and it goes into standby mode. Then I have to deal with the issue all over again. Unfortunately, as of this morning, I can no longer restore to a point prior to March 4th and restoring to those points doesn't work:"System Restore did not complete successfully. My new 2017 Dell XPS-13 2-in-1 arrived today and just finished testing it with our Apple Thunderbolt Displays & new Apple Thunderbolt Adapter ($29). Plugged it (adapter / mini-dp pigtail) into the LEFT USB-C port and monitor sprang to life without any issues. The LEFT port appears to have a higher class of protocol extensions. The Dell also works in "lid-closed" condition, but requires an "open-shut" to activate sleep after disconnecting.
We also have a Acer R240Hy Usb-C display which works (charge/video) from both ports. The LEFT port is smooth for FHD, but the RIGHT usb-c has drops under FHD.

Hello all,I'm a longtime ThinkPad user (740C, circa 1994?) and I've somehow never joined a ThinkPad forum before! Happy to be here at last.Anyways, I recently installed an Msata SSD into my T420s WWAN port and I'm using it as my boot sector. Very pleased with the performance and I've been enthusiastically telling my friends about the benefits of an SSD boot sector using Msata while still retaining the main drive bay as conventional HDD storage.A friend of mine recently purchased an X1 (non Carbon, the first generation) and asked me about my SSD experience. He took the plunge and ordered a Plextor 128GB Msata SSD online and had it shipped to his home. He asked me to come over and do the install for him.Based off of how easy my install experience was, I agreed quickly. I took a really quick look online and it seemed like the install for his was even easier than my experience with the T420s. Literally three screws out of the bottom, pop out the keyboard and right away you had access to the WWAN port. The install went as expected, I disconnected the AC adaptor and opened her up, installed the SSD, plugged the adaptor back in and booted up. BIOS recognized the drive and we were ready to get started. While in Windows downloading Macrium Reflect for use cloning the boot sector, I decided to move the laptop to another surface and unplugged the AC.........computer shut off instantly, as if there was no battery present. Tried pressing the power button, no effect.Plugged power back... Read more

Hey everyone! I'm probably going to come off as super petty but I just want to check to see if the noises I get from different keys is normal. The backspace and down arrow keys are quite a bit noiser when clicked than any other buttons on the keyboard. I first noticed how loud the down arrow key was versus the other arrow keys. Are these normal differences that you all are experiencing or are these issues I should try to warranty? Like I said, I'm sure I'm coming off as petty but it's a brand new laptop for me and one I spent quite a bit of money on so I want to make sure everything's okay. Thanks for the feedback!

Over the past several years there are many posts of users experiencing variations on this problem with X1 Carbon and X1 Yoga of various generations, including the latest ones (I provide a list below). That is, the systems often cannot come out of sleep mode in some way, shape, or form. I had this problem on my own brand-new X1 Carbon 5th Generation, right out of the box. In my instance, I noticed this issue in the following two scenarios: -After having gone in to sleep mode, once I opened the lid, or press power button once:power light goes from blinking to solid onscreen stays blank/blackseems that if the machine is going to be in the frozen state, keyboard presses do not "unsleep" it (which they normally would). Closing the lid causes the power light to go to solid on, but then opening it again does nothing.in a couple of rarer instances, the machine actually did come out of sleep but then instantly the screen froze (but this was quite uncommon, mostly it just wouldn't come out of sleep at all)-After passing the initial boot screen of Lenovo, the next part shows the Lenovo logo but without the swirling dots and is frozen (the power light would show on)Under both conditions: The power light is solid onThe keyboard lights functionality works: backlighting, FnLock light, mute lightSometimes you can hear the fan workingPlugging in to external display does not display anything on itThe only way to rectify is to do a hard shutdown by holding the power key With... Hello, any help appreciated. About a week ago the sound on my X1 Carbon 4th Gen (Type 20FB, 20FC) Laptop (ThinkPad) changed. Just turned on one day and it sounded completely different.  It sounds very echo like (like you were in a big cave listening).  1) If I listen to a song I've listened to a 100 times on this laptop, now it sounds like all the levels are off (same whether Youtube, Spotify, Music player, etc). The backing track seems louder and main vocals seem a bit lost in the mix. 2) Watching sport on the laptop now, the crowd often is louder than the commentary. Or a movie, the main dialogue is harder to hear against background noise. I changed no settings and cannot see/find any equalisers/settings that can or will alter it.  If I use headphones, everything sounds as normal. It's just using external speaker sound. Any ideas? It sounds really bad. Thanks in advance.

The the replacement unit has the same problem. Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.  I need to plug in the power adapter for both docking station and notebook.  Does anybody have similiar problem?

Answer:Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 docking station does not charge Thinkpad P51 battery.

Everbody's p51 would be the same.  The thunderbolt port won't work as a charging port.  The thunderbolt specs specify 100w max.  That's not enough.  Your thunderbolt port is not for charging.  To charge via the dock, you need a workstation dock, not a thunderbolt dock.  A thinderbolt dock can charge things like an x1 carbon (5th gen) or x1 yoga (2nd gen)

Does the Thinkpad P51s support the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? I have the Thinkpad P51s with stock Windows 10 Pro and updated to latest drivers and Windows version and installed the latest Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock drivers. Attaching the Thunderbolt 3 Dock to the P51s as described in documentation, it charges the notebook, however, noting attached to the dock is recognized. I've tested with attaching USB flash drives, headphones, Ethernet, HDMI, and DP, but nothing is recognized nor are any warnings/errors displayed in Windows. While the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock is listed as being compatible with the P51s and T570, the notebook order page does not list the Thunderbolt 3 Dock in any of the accessories lists. Lenovo Sales also confirmed that the Thunderbolt 3 Dock is fully compatible with the P51s.  However, I needed to purchase the Thunderbolt 3 Dock separately from the notebook order. What's going on? Has anybody successfully used the P51s or the T570 with the Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock? Or is this something I need to wait for full support via a future BIOS/driver update? Or perhaps my Thunderbolt 3 Dock is defective? Thanks,Boris

I received my X1 Carbon 5th Gen just a few weeks ago. Today, a thunderbolt 3 port next to an LED suddenly died and seems to no longer accept any devices. I tried 4K monitor and some other USB devices thourgh a USB type C hub connected to the port, but nothing worked. I tried with Windows 10 and Ubuntu 17.04, the port no longer works with any operating systems. Interestingly, Windows 10 now thinks it's connected to AC power even when nothing is actually connected to the Thunderbolt 3 ports. Therefore I strongly suspect this is a hardware issue. Does anyone have a similar problem?

Hello Everyone, I am new here so please go easy on me.I just bought and X1 Carbon 5th Gen laptop c/w Thunderbolt 3.0 docking station. The problem that I have is that the docking station won't recognise any of the external screens that are connected.I am using two Acer screens (one is connected using HDMI port on the dock and the other one uisng Display port).I have tried by connecting just one screen but nothing.I can see that Thunderbolt software is installed and its connected to my laptop. The laptop will charge through the docking station and also the wireless mouse and keyboard will work fine through the dock.Lenovo recommended that i should update my drivers. So I installed Lenovo Companion from Windows store. But it won't update my system. After clicking on System Update, I will get an error message saying "There is a problem in reteriving new updates for your system. Please try again later".Hence I downloaded all the drivers from support website and installed them manually but my docking station is still not working with the external monitors. The monitors works fine when connected directly to the laptop using the HDMI cable. Thanks in advance for your help.

Anyone have a fix for the x1 carbon laptop going to sleep mode very quickly (1-2 minutes) while using a lenovo docking station?  It doesnt happen when i use the laptop without dock.  Ive tried all the normal setting in windows.  they are set to 15-20 minutes.  It still happens.  Ive updated the drivers for the docking station.  It still happens.  This is also an issue with an employee's 4th generation X1 and a USB-C dock.  After waiting for 25 minutes on lenovo chat and no one responding, i called in.  They spent 30 minutes playing with the same settings then said it was a software issue and transfered me to another department.  They tried to charge me $200 to fix the problem.  My laptop and dock are less than 6 months old.  I'm extremly upset with lenovo!

Answer:X1 Carbon with Thunderbolt 3 dock going to sleep mode quickly

Gets even better. I called back into the original number and they said "what i do with my computer is not their problem. Since it works (even though briefly) then its fine"

Is the X1 Carbon 2017 with or without a fan. Is it useable with a dock having the screen lock'ed down, - without getting hot?

Answer:X1 Carbon 2017 fan?

Hi rodding,Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.As I understand that you have query regarding X1 Carbon 2017 is a fanless or not
rodding wrote:

The system is having fan & it requires Active Cooling. Also you can use system with dock and put the display on off it should work fine.

I hope the above information helped you.

Machine model: 20HRCT01WW At seemingly random intervals the Dock stops working (for USB perphirals) and my wife has to move keyboard/mouse to the machine itself - defeating the purpose of a very expensive dock. Machine is fully up to date the current version of windows and all drivers (including the Thunderbolt dock). I would report this directly to support but Lenovo it won't allow to me register my wife's X1 with my account inspite of the fact that I'm the one who ordered it. Ugh. ThanksMark Levison

Hi guys, I have quite a simple question : is it possible to open the X1 Carbon (2017) and change easily the SSD ? Or is it like on the MacBook Pro totally soldered on the motherboard ? Thanks for your answers,  Regards, Achille

Answer:Upgrading the SSD on the X1 Carbon (2017)

Good day and welcome to the community.Looking at the hardware manual for the 20HQ, 20HR, 20K3 and 20K4 machine types: https://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/x1_carbon_5th_hmm_en_sp40m11925.pdf pages 70-71 show the SSD as removable.

Hope this helps a bit.Regards.

hi,this summer i bought the x1 carbon with 16gb and 1tb.it arrived with a battery lasting only 2-3 hours. i opened a case and lenovo sent a repair box. i decided to keep it because i cannot be without a computer for three weeks and  i decided to operate it mostly plugged in. lenovo had old me that they would not take the  broken computer back unlike good american companies like apple or costco. are they not interested in happy customers? i have to travel a lot and yesterday the ssd gave up on the five months young computer. i am shocked. this has never happened  to me before even with cheap consumer rated computers. the x1 carbon was almost 2500 loonies. lenovo sells it as a premium business class computer. now i am stuck in asia without a working computer. for the first time in my life. thanks to lenovo.fred

Hi there, I recently purchased a X1 Carbon 5th Gen (i7-7500u, 16gb, wqhd, 256gb) and ran a few benchmarks on it out of the box. I was completely perplexed to see that the SSD speeds measured with CrystalDiskMark were not even close to those I had seen in multiple reviews. In fact, they amounted to around 45% of the scores I would have expected. I then checked the hardware listings and was surprised to see that my device does not have the blazingly fast Samsung PM961 which I had seen in every single review of the X1 Carbon (and thus assumed it was standard), but an Intel 600p NVME drive. The speeds measured match those advertised on the Intel website. Lenovo, what the hell? I honestly do not care if they source hardware from different suppliers as long as performance stays consistent. Here, you get either one of the fastest or one of the slowest NVME drives on the market for the exact same price. Meanwhile, every reviewer out there seems to be getting a device with a PM961 equipped.  Regardlessly, I am wondering if the difference between the PM961 and the 600p is actually there in real life. Given that I use Office/Chrome/Matlab, would it be worth upgrading to a faster drive? Many thanks in advance.

Hi All, I would like to check the stability of the X1 Carbon 2017, if it's still as problematic as what I've read from the various threads: trackpad issues, thunderbolt ports issues, etc.  I've just returned a Yoga 370, supposed to be Mil specs but delivered faulty right out of box. As a form of resolution and customer retention, Lenovo has recommended and offered to swap to a X1 Carbon or T470 as what they claimed to be stable laptops.  I would like to to seek your opinions on this before deciding whether to go ahead with another Lenovo. I'm really keen to move on to other companies since the customer service rendered, active following up and updates has not really been that satisfactory.  I would like to hear you guys out first before deciding.  Thanks in advance

Hello everyone, I am new to this forum and have a problem regarding setting up 4k displays:Equipment: Thinkpad x1 carbon 2017 (5 gen) with wqhd, thunderbolt 3 dock, 2 4k samsung displayshttps://support.lenovo.com/de/en/solutions/pd029622This is my target setup:1. 4k display at 60 hz connected via dock at dp1 (display port)2. 4k display at 60 hz connected via dock at dp2(ideall: 3. x1 carbon wqhd internal display on) My problem is that the second 4k display (a Samsung TV) did not connect when I connected it via the dock (picture shortly present, then goes away again, when trying again no picture at all). However it works (all 3 displays on) when I connect 2. via the hdmi connector directly at the laptop. Hence: is there any way to get it working like in my target setup? Thank you very much for your suggestions and ideas!Besterev

Hi, I've only had the x1 carbon 2017 for ~3 months now but suddenly every port on it has failed. Both USB Cs don't recognize the charger and the usb ports don't recognize any USBs. If the charger is plugged in it simply won't recognize it and the LED will not light up. I tried the charger on my phone and it works so it has to be something with the laptop. If anyone might know anything that could solve this please let me know!

Again, not sure why Lenovo is so hard headed? Resuing to listen to what the MAJORITY of people want. * No OLED displays? How long do we have to wait for this? 2020? * SD Mini slot in the back? Very inconvient. No one is going to use it. (regular SD card on the side works better).* CTRL and FN button still in the wrong location. Why again do we have to fix it in bios when Lenovo can easily make it right? No SD card on my 2015 is the most annoying thing ever. Yes I have a stupid USB SD reader but c'mon. What's the point of thin and light if we have to carry a bunch of add-ons. Especially when the SD card slot doesn't even take up any space. Stupid move. Lenovo is losing sales and customers and it's due to them being out of touch with consumers.

Answer:The 2016 X1 Carbon was a flop. When will the 2017 ...

The 2016 X1 Carbon was a flop for Lenovo? I doubt that. I think it sells very well for Lenovo. You say the majority of people want an SD card reader? Many mobile systems don´t have one anymore, and they still sell. This is a niche requirement, and Lenovo, who is a company with a wide lineup, has other models to fullfill that need. Aka the ThinkPad T460s, which is dimension and weight wise almost exactly the same as your X1 Carbon 2015, but with an SD Card reader, Ethernet, upgradeable RAM etc.

Hi there, yesterday I used "Lenovo Vantage" for the first time, after "Lenovo Settings", still assigned to F11-key, was telling me to do that.Vanatage found several updates to be installed. The only one that worked was for the BIOS. All others are being downloaded but stop after 85% of installation, with just a generic error message after several minutes.I tried disabling this "System Interface Foundation" service, uninstalling Lenovo Settings, re-installing Vantage and finally I downloaded the drivers manually and tried to install them - no success. While the Vantage app at least throws an error message, the direct driver installation just ends after several minutes= the icon in the taskbar disappears. I wouldn't have bothered, but now the update attempts show a side effect: it was the touchpad driver which Vantage claimed to be the most ugent pending update, so this was the one I tried updating. Now the touchpad's left-click doesn't always work any more. Every 3rd or so time it doesn't work and I have to use the button instead. I'm a bit desparate. Can someone please help?Thx,reach

I just received my x1 carbon last week and I love it. However, I've noticed that the fans are always on when the laptop is plugged in, regardless of what I'm using the computer for. When the laptop is running off battery power, the unit is quiet. Has anyone else noticed this issue? So far, using the Windows 10 power management options hasn't made a difference. For instance, switching to "passive" cooling while on AC power hasn't changed anything. I would appreciate any feedback that can be offered.

I've received an X1 Carbon yesterday (i7-7600u, 16GB, WQHD, 1TB SSD and pretty much all options) and on the first boot Windows had a number of problems during final setup.  This led to a number of "Something went wrong" messages and a freeze at one point but after a couple of restarts it finally got to the desktop. I am concerned there maybe a hardware issue but it could be the combination of hardware options/drivers. A quick hardware test in Lenovo companion didn't show any issues so has anyone else had this type of problem on first boot?

Hey all, I'm having an issue with my new X1/Thunderbolt setup, and I was hoping I could find some help here. Problem:I'm currently having a problem where my keyboard and mouse are cutting out intermittently. This happens at random for about a second or so at a time. With the mouse it almost feels as if the computer is lagging.. but it's not. With the keyboard it can cut out mid press of a key, and the letter (or it's even happened to me while pasting) will just keep going for a second or two before the keyboard comes back in and sends the signal to release the key. Setup:I have a new X1 Carbon gen5. This is replacing a Macbook Air, which I had hooked up to an Apple Thunderbolt 27" monitor (Model# A1407):https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Thunderbolt_Display(These are both from ~2011) This is a Thunderbolt 1 monitor, so the connector is the same shape as mini-display port. Apple makes a Thunderbolt 2 -> 3 adaptor (2 was backwards compatible with 1), which I have and am using:https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MMEL2AM/A/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-to-thunderbolt-2-adapter My keyboard and mouse are wireless logitech products, and are hooked up through the monitor. The display seems to work fine. I don't game really, so maybe I'd see some flickers if there were fast refreshes going on, but for my use so far I have not seen any issues. The only issue is the hooked up peripherals (which so far is just the keyboard and mouse). These all still work f... Read more

I had been reading the new review of the T470 from Notebookcheck and something caught my eye; they specifically mention more than once that the WWAN slot can be used for an SSD; http://www.notebookcheck.net/Lenovo-ThinkPad-T470-Core-i5-Full-HD-Notebook-Review.198130.0.html"Between the WiFi module and the 2.5-inch slot is also a free M.2-2242 slot, which can either be used for a WWAN module (antennas prepared) or an SSD""The available storage solutions for the ThinkPad T470 are quite interesting. Inside the chassis is a 2.5-inch slot attached via PCIe x2. This slot can either be equipped with a conventional 2.5-inch hard drive (HDD or SSD, up to 7 mm high) or an M.2-SSD (2280), which is sitting in the 2.5-inch tray via adapter. It is also possible to implement another SSD in the M.2-2242 slot. Lenovo's spec sheet, for example, lists a 128 GB model or Intel's Optane solution (16 GB), which can act as cache in combination with a conventional hard drive."I'm hesitant to assume this will apply to the new X1 since it doesn't have an option for HDD and therefore no need to configure the WWAN port to support an SSD for caching. Can anybody test/confirm this? I've read documentation on the new X1 Spec sheet and hardware maintenance and it mentions nothing about support for additional devices in the WWAN slot. I'd kill to be able to have a separate SSD for a linux install so I don't have to mess with bootloaders every time windows has a major update.

I have an X1 Carbon 2017 and a Xiaomi noise-cancelling headset that uses USB-C to transfer audio and power. However, the Xiaomi headset which works perfectly on my phone and my friend's Xioami laptop does not work on my Thinkpad. Hi there, I?m very interested in purchasing the new X1 carbon, but with the 2k screen. I can?t find any official statement about a release date appart from ?summer of 2017?. Did anyone know more about it? Have a nice day.

Answer:Carbon X1 2017 WQHD release date?

When I last asked their online chat support (last week), they said they simply "did not know".  This is in spite of the X1C product page saying WQHD would be available in June.  I'm a big Thinkpad fan - my X220 is still running strong and I got a Thinkpad Yoga 14 last fall which I sold only bc I was so amazed when I saw the release of the X1C 5th Gen in January.  But I have to say I am very very disappointed in Lenovo.  Almost six months after boasting the WQHD specs it is still not available with no estimate on timing either.  This is one of the largest companies in the world yet they can't seem to have an efficient supply chain.  No wonder HP has snatched the #1 PC maker crown away from Lenovo...

Hello,I got my new thinkpad x1 carbon 1 month ago and since it constantly has been slow on internet browsing. For example, it's almost impossible to use the Inbox by Google webmail because it's too slow. I have an Intel Core i7 - 7500U with 16Go RAM and 512Go SSD.I don't know why my thinkpad is so sluggish when browsing the web. I have tried different web browsers (Edge, Chrome and Firefox) and it doesn't seem to make any difference. I'm on the "normal" power plan so the power limitation should not be very high. But when I plug my laptop and chose the performance mode, all the slow-down disappear. I have made all the updates that the Lenovo Companion told me to do.Sometimes the OS seems slow too but it's more rare. I don't know what to do at this point. Do you guys have any ideas ?Thanks in advance.

Hi, I'm long time X / ThinkPad user and I have few issues that are making me crazy.1) I'm mostly using TrackPoint. It happens quite few times in some hours that mouse starts to slide to diagonal position. I can stop this by either having computer go to sleep or trying to move mouse on mousepad for 10-20 seconds until computer figures out that I'm on omusepad. Today it happened 3 or 4 times in an hour2) When I'm moving mouse with TrackPoint and stop it somewhere (for example on button) I often need to click a few times until mouse click is detected (using TrackPoint buttons)3) When I am using MousePad and I move fingers slow it moves in a shaking way or sometimes does not detect my finger movement4) It has always worked that when I was using MousePad (for example T460s) when I was sliding with one finger from point A to point B and then pressed with second finger it triggered Right Click. Now I need to slide from point A to B with one finger, remove finger from MousePad and tap with two fingers All the drivers are up to date and all windows updates are installed as-well.

It seems that Lenovo has released today first infos of upcoming models including X270: http://www.anandtech.com/show/10940/lenovo-updates-the-thinkpad-lineup-new-models-welcome-changes I have been postponing laptop purchase because I want one with QHD or better resolution, thunderbolt3 and ability to charge with standard USB type-C charger. Now it seems that for some reason that I cannot understand Lenovo has still decided not to include QHD or QHD+ resolutions to quite many of the upcoming models, including X270, Yoga 370, Thinkpad 13 and T470. It is now already 4.5 years ago from the moment when Apple Released Macbook Pro retina with QHD equivalent resolution. In addition some of the articles claim that the new USB type-C port in X270 will NOT have thunderbolt3 availability. And it is like 5.5 years since Apple included thunderbolt. I really think we should start noise from this. If there will not be a serious portable workstation like X270 with QHD or better resolution and enough USB-slots (at least 3+1) and thunderbolt support I am seriously considering to switch away from Lenovo (e.g. Dell XPS 13). I know that some people prefer FullHD (e.g. for longer battery life) so there could be an option for both. I want QHD because 1. If you want to have two web browsers side by side without horizontal scroll bars you will need minimun QHD, 2. I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Issue #2 is easy so I'll start there.  Security-related settings are never changed by loading defaults.  It's working as designed.

I am trying to connect a ThinkPad t460s to my 27'' Apple Thunderbolt display. There's a port on the right hand side of my notebook which accepts the connection from the Thunderbolt plug, but nothing shows up on my display when I plug it in.  I am not a computer person and have no idea why this is happening. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Connecting ThinkPad t460s to Thunderbolt Display

Hello and welcome,

I wasn't aware that a T460s had a Thunderbolt port.

Looking at the (English) User Guide - ThinkPad T460s page 2 this is what I see for the right side ports:

Which one are you trying to use?

Hi, I have the Thinkpad Twist S230u, in the specs it says it has a mini display port, but is this port a Thunderbolt? I read too many things in forums and I got mixed up.  I want to be sure it has.  The ultrabook uses the Intel 4000 integrated graphics. The reason is I want to plug something like the MSI GUS II in this port to have external graphics.  Will it work? Thanks!MaDube

Answer:Thinkpad Twist mini display = Thunderbolt?

It is a displayport only. Here is the list of ThinkPads that have thunderbolt ports. There are currently only two models of ThinkPad that have Thunderbolt ports. http://www.thinkscopes.com/thunderbolt-port-on-thinkpad-t430s/

My speaker and my audio generate very loud high pitched noise after waking from sleep.I had to mute my audio if this happens, but the speaker is essentially unusable in this situation. If I plug in my headphone through audio jack, the high pitched noise will come from both headphone (and unmutable) and my speaker (if I turn on the volume). I hope this is fixable through driver update.

I was wondering about the Thunderbolt device as there are no drivers at the support page and even the Solution Center/System Update Utility doesn't recognize the Thunderbolt device. As so it isn't listed in the Windows Device Manager. I made sure that it is activated in the Bios (Thunderbolt Enabled). When I plug in a second display via a Display-Port to DVI Adapter, the second screen is not recognized. So I guess the device/driver isn't even installed. Sadly I don't have another Thunderbolt device to test its functionallity.I try to buy the apple thunderbolt to firewire 800 adapter. Does anyone know if it will work with non-apple thunderbolt implementations?Any help is appreciated. Thanks, David

Answer:Thinkpad Edge S430 Core i7 Thunderbolt Device

Hey Dagavie,

I believe that Thunderbolt is part of package and that is why you don't find as a stand alone download. What you can do is try uninstalling the video drive and installing the latest version.

Here is the link:
http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?

Also the device itself could need its own driver that you would have to get from the company its from. Like the monitor your try to connect.

Being as apple doesn't like to play well with others I can guess it wont work but this is just a guess and not a fact.

Best Regards,

Hiro

In the last month I purchased a Thinkpad X1 Yoga 2G and the Thuderbolt USB C dock. Since the USB C cable that comes with the dock is too short to allow the dock on the right and laptop on the left (in laptop mode), I put the notebook in tent mode and all works fine---except... Everytime I power up from hibernate it starts beeping about once a second and does not stop. I have to disconnect from the dock, flip it to laptop mode (this is where the beeping stops), return it to tent mode, and then plug the dock back in. It seems that Lenovo, like everybody else, is rushing things to market with plans to fix bugs later (maybe). Any thoughts I how to stop the beeping?  The first time it happened I closed all the apps to reboot and it still was beeping. Thanks.

I think the only things wrong with this years thinkpad is the battery life and screen brightness, here I have a few things that lenovo can improve on to step up their game and create the best 14 inch business class laptop in the world. 1. Increasing screen brightness to at least 400 nits as it is very dim compared to competition and outside work it becoming a pain.2. Increase that battery life to 18-20 hours in your tests, which will lead to about 10 hours of real worlds usage even if it means not being as light maybe back to the 2.8lbs of last year. As this years 11 hours isn't very long in real world usage compared to the likes of maybe Dell XPS or even Apple.3. Bring back the full SD card reader (which atm I dont see an issue with the microSD, people have complained).4. Try using intel Iris graphics instead of HD graphics as its more powerful, costs around the same and people will appriciate it more. I hope users agree with what I am saying and even though its far away I can say im looking forward to what the 5th Gen X1 Carbon has in store for us!

I have a P50 with the Intel 530 video and the HDMI and Thunderbolt ports have stopped working.  Lenovo has replaced the motherboard and they work on the tech's flash Ubuntu OS so it's not the hardware. On 10/24, during the Lenovo or Windows scheduled updates, I see some changes to the video driver.  That's when they stopped working.  I tried roll back but it doesn't work.  I have read previous posts on P50 HDMI issues and have updated the BIOS, Firmware and Thunderbolt software.  I've run all Windows and Lenovo updates.  Of particular importance, Lenvovo keeps trying to push a large "Thinkpad Video Features" update on me but it won't install.  It says it is for Nvidia N16S and Quadro 16P so that makes sense to me, I just don't know why it keeps trying to push it down to me. Anyone experience this issue?  The screen shots show the Lenovo update they are trying to push on me and the updates to the display adapter driver that occurred on 10/24.  Since then it just hasn't worked.

Dear All fellow,   I have a technical problem as below, hoping you can help me solve this issue.   Firstly, I had just purchased a Thinkpad T430s in previous days, it has a thunderbolt port and now I want to purchase IMAC 2012 "21.5" inch. But I want to transfer data between Thinkpad T430s and IMAC 2012 with thunderbolt port and also I want to use this iMac 2012 "21.5" inch as an external screen on my T430s with this thunderbolt ports. I don't know whether it can be workable or not.  Can you help give me some comments? Thanks for your help!!Andy Ling

Answer:Thinkpad T430s can connect to Apple IMAC 2012 "21.5" with thunderbolt port ?

Thunderbolt port gives you access to PCI and DP interfaces. DIsplayPort is output port only, so you can not "stream" output from your TP to MAC. PCI - should be possible, but I doubt that there is supporting circuitry for this. There is Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter that can be used to transfer data. EDIT: If you want to connect screen only then it is possible.

Hi Nik,Warm Greetings & welcome to Lenovo Community, happy to have you here.As I understand that you have query regarding using stylus with your ThinkPad T470
The thing is that nowadays we are using laptops & Smartphones with Capacitive touchscreens so only capacitive styluses will work and there are not much option to choose from like Adonit Jot pro

I hope the above information helped you.
