Question: Dell Latitude 7480 - crackling sound from the speakers

Hi,
Further to my previous post about the issue with Dell Command Update tool (it keep suggesting to download and install the same drivers over and over, although I have installed them more than 5 times), I also have an issue with the speakers built-in the machine.
From time to time, while I'm listening to music I hear a crackling sound from the speakers. According to the Dell Command Update tool, I have the most updated audio driver. I even reinstalled the audio driver by removing it from the device manger and restarting the machine, but to no avail.
OS: Windows 10 pro
Audio drivers:
Speakers/Headphones (Realtek audio): 10.0.14393.0 (driver date: 15-Jul-16)
Realtek audio: 6.0.1.7982 (driver date: 8-Nov-16)
Any idea?

p/s. Latitude 7480 has too many hardware/software issues. I got the laptop only two weeks ago, and this is the third issue I have. I'm considering returning it back to Dell :-\

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

If you want to return it, don't wait too long. After the brief return period, which starts from the invoice date, you won't be allowed to return it.
Try the Windows native audio driver -- as a test.
1. Open the Device Manager.2. Expand the "Sound, Video & Game Controllers" section.3. Right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio" and select to uninstall.4. Put a check mark in the option to delete the driver software, and then ok.5. Restart the laptop and go back to the Device Manager and check again for a Realtek driver. Keep uninstalling & restarting until Realtek no longer appears under Sound...Controllers and "High Definition Audio Device" appears in its place. "High Definition Audio Device" is the name of the native driver.
[The reason you might have to go through the process more than once is because the driver files for more than one Realtek driver could be on the hard drive. When a Realtek driver is removed, the next one gets installed if Windows can locate the files. Windows installs its generic driver only after all Realtek files have been removed.]
To re-install the Realtek driver, it's better to download it from your Dell support page rather than letting Windows Update find one.

A detailed review of the Latitude 7480 notes the laptop has a very noticeable coil whine when the SSD is accessed or background processes are active, and there are several posts on this support forum regarding speaker crackling. Have both of these issues been fixed on new Latitude 7480s?

I have a question about Dell Latitude 7480: Can I install a SSD M.2 NVMe into DELL Latitude 7480?

The Specifications section of the Owner's Manual on support.dell.com frustratingly doesn't say anything at all about the M.2 connector (it isn't even mentioned as existing in the system!), but at least in the Dell US store, the 7480 has an option for "M.2 512GB PCIe NVMe Class 40 Solid State Drive" -- so yes, the 7480 does support NVMe, and choosing that option does NOT force you to choose the Thunderbolt 3 motherboard option, for what it's worth.

My DELL INSPIRON N5110 Windows 10 64 Bit having Crackling Sound Problem on Both Speakers and Headphone. I have already tried twice to format window, uninstall sound drivers and only keeping High Definition Audio native driver only but the problem is not getting rectified. I shown my Laptop to a Mechanic also and he said speakers are ok. So the problem is with Software but yet I am not sure about where is this problem in Software or Hardware? I have also done diagnostic test but everything fine in Test. Please help me with this problem, I am unable to listen music and watch movies. Your Help will be highly appreciated.

Hello,
After installing Windows updates and Dell's updates, including the "Dell Data Protection" software, the fingerprint login option ceased working.
I tried configuring the fingerprint login via the DDP Console, but in the end of the process (after configuring the fingerprint) it says that "The biometric unit is not in the proper state to perform the specified operation". What does it mean?

It is worth noting, that the biometric device reads fingerprints (I'm able to add\remove fingerprints via the Windows sign-in options screen and via the DDP Console, until it says that there is an error as stated above).
OS: Windows 10 pro
Please advise.

Hi Guys
I am not able to install the correct Video driver for my Latitude 7480.
This laptop came with Windows 10, but in my company we need to downgrade to Windows 7 Enterprise.
After I did the downgrade, the only driver I was not able to install was the video. (Intel-HD-Graphic-500-P500-series-D5Kd6_win21_20.16.4627_A02.exe)
I saw that the driver in Windows 10 appear as follow Intel(R) HD Graphics 620, but even in the Intel web page I could not find the driver.
I hope somebody can help me to find the correct driver
It is for Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bits version.

Hi,
It seems that I have a problem with the Dell Command | Update tool, because it keeps suggesting to download and update the same 3 updates all the time - please find enclosed a print screen. I already installed them at least 3-4 times, but nothing helps.. By the way, it didn't find the new BIOS version which I had to download manually.
While when I run the "detect drivers" tool via Dell's website, it doesn't find any new drivers to be installed. However, I suspect that it just doesn't work well, because manually I found several drivers available on Dell's webpage which were newer than the drivers which are currently installed on my machine (I logged in with the laptop's service tag, so I believe that only relevant drivers should be presented).
My machine is Dell Latitude 7480 running Win 10 Pro.
Please advise.

I'm using a new Latitude 7480 with Win 10 and almost from day one when connecting an external screen via the HDMI, every couple of minutes (sometimes every minute and sometimes once in 5 minutes) the external monitor goes blank for 2 seconds and turns on again.
I can hear the relay clicking.
I've changed the monitor, the cable and yesterday Dell lab has even replaced the whole motherboard in the new laptop and it's still the same.
I would appreciate any help on this matter.

Hello. Use Windows System Restore. (Type system restore into the Windows search box.) Select a restore point dated earlier than when the issue began. See if that helps.

For a while now ive been getting on and off crackly sound in the speakers, it can vary from high to low volume, and isent the speakers, since my old ones did it as well, when i connect a headphone into either sound port the crackling is still there. (in all programs, games, music, etc)
Im running XP, but im not sure what other info you might need. So if you can help i would really appreciate it, and if you need more info, just post it and ill do by best to give it to you.

I have just bought a Dell Inspiron 15 7559 and it just arrived this morning. However, when I try to play any sound the speaker starts to crackle heavily. The only solution that works is plugging in headphones and unplugging them which seems to work. But once you shut down the computer, and turn it back on, this problem still exists. I have already updated the realtek hd audio driver as well as the bios. I would hate to have to return the laptop as it works flawlessly otherwise.

ok, i have the old pc HP Compaq 6735s oldiest model and have problem.. I have the headset Plantronics .Audio 655 DSP... Its USB (no Jack) headset, but sound is crackly and randomly.. Microphone is good, no problem, also speakers... I tested in another pc, and work correctly (Win 7), also in WIN XP not installed drivers.. I telled the makers of headset and reply is here:

Your USB headset does not rely on the Audio chipset.

The Plantronics website touts it as not needing software... I can't find any issues similar to yours by searching the WWW, so I have no base to work from.

Just so I am clear... You are running Windows 8 on a Compaq 6735s?

Try using a different USB port.

Have you had any other issues since upgrading to Windows 8?

hi i just recently install vista on my system. i installed all the right drivers and apps. but i just get a funny crackling noise coming from my speakers non stop. any way to fix this? ive tried uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling them. still didn't help me out. thanks...

I was watching a movie in my laptop and the speakers suddenly started to give out crackling noise for few seconds and then it stopped, after that, the speakers never worked. I tried restarting the compuer, disabling/enabling the speakers, troubleshooting the speakers. Speakers are not working even after the Windows 10 upgrade. Previously, it was Windows 7.
 
Is there anyway that the speakers can start working again?

Hi, I have a Gateway laptop and the speakers are crackling, and it also happens when I connect outside speakers to the computer. This has just started happening since we moved. Could it have something to do with that? Thanks!

I am having problems with a set of computer speakers. They make a crackling sound when the volume is turned up. I don't seem to notice the noise when the speakers are turned way down. The volume setting in the computer are set at half and I have tried another set of speakers and they too make the same noise. The computer is a 2 year old HP using windows xp as the operating system.

Any help or insight anyone one might have on this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hi HP! My girlfriend recently bought an HP Pavilion Model QCWB335 and she is experiencing issues with crackling sounds coming from the speakers. We have already tried rebooting the computer, lowering the volume down to 50 % and using headphones (same problem occurs). I will try my best to help you with this issue. Here are some instructions from SuperMario1 on how to resolve this. 1. Go into Control Panel, then Sound.2. Under the Playback tab, double click on Speakers to open Properties. 3. Go to Advanced tab. In the drop down, select the highest quality stereo output. 4. Click Apply and close all windows. If that didn't help, then here's round 2: 1. Instead of the Playback tab, go to the Recording tab. 2. Double click on Stereo Mix. 3. Hi,

I have an HP Pro4510s Laptop for around 4 years now. Everything is just fine with this laptop but recently, about 1 week, I have got some issue with the sound.

There's a crackling sound from the speakers and it's very annoying.

I have searched for hours on goggle how to fix it, but in vain.

I have uninstall and install SoundMax again. Downloaded the audio drivers for Hp website.

Nothing has resolved the issue.

What makes it weird is that when I connect my Nokia bluetooth headset to the laptop, I can listen to music and watch movies with some crystal clear sound, NO CRACKLING sound!

But as soon as I disconnect the Bluetooth headset, the problem comes up again.

I would really appreciate some help.

Sounds like the speakers or the audio chipset output to the speakers is faulty. It's possible for it to function properly on one output and not the other.

I've been experiencing a extremely annoying issue lately. My headphones make a crackling sound, but it also feel kind of electric. I have a Audio interface (Steinberg UR22) and got both my speakers and headphones connected there. They both have the same symptoms. I've tried putting my headphones in my pc, so it would go on the motherboard soundcard, but i got the same result.

Hey guys, I just reformatted my computer because I had major spyware on it that I thought was causing computer freeze which then causes a crackling sound from my speakers. It was happening at most every 20 minutes. Turns out it is still happening sometimes. It seems to happen when I'm doing something that uses alot of RAM. It happened twice while trying to install the demo of F.E.A.R. and then again when I was watching Batman Begins on my computer.
The computer freezes and instantly emits a crackling sound out of my speakers. Does that sound like anything to anyone?

Hi All,

I've recently just purchased a new P100 - 160 and on the whole I'm chuffed to bits with it.

However, there's one thing that's really bugging me... and that's the sound quality.

When I purchased the laptop one of the selling points was that it had "Harman/Kardon" which are supposed to be really, really good. Now, from a 3D / Surround sound point of view, I've got to say that they certainly seem to live up to what I was told.

However - In terms of "volume capability" the speakers seems not to give the maximum.... and I'm not talking about having the volume so high that the neighbours can here it either!

Turn the speakers up more than about 1/4 of the way, and the sound/speakers crackle very mad - especially when it's playing anything with even a slight bit of bass.

I've tried changing the equalizer and volume settings in Media Player but that didn't help either.

Has anyone else had this problem, or does anyone know what the fix may be?

You?re right.
The notebook is definitely delivered with Harman/kardon speakers and usually such speakers are also known as "good quality" speakers.
Therefore I have investigated a little bit in this forum for similar issues and found this link to the Toshiba document about crackling noise on Satellite P100.

It seems the BIOS and driver update should be done.
One tip: You could try to remove the old sound driver files before install the new one.

Hi everyone,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, so please feel free to re-direct if necessary.

I have a brand new Toshiba Satellite A665-S9092 laptop that just started exhibiting a weird problem: I get an occasional crackling, popping sound from whatever I plug into the headphone jack. I've tried with my Bose speakers and two separate sets of headphones. It seems to occur whenever the hard drive is accessed: when the computer is idle, I don't hear a peep, but whenever I e.g. refresh my browser or open a program, it starts crackling. The odd thing is that I don't get this from the built-in laptop speakers - only from whatever I plug into the headphone jack.

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? One of the main uses of this machine is playing music so this problem is putting a serious crimp in my enjoyment...

(Extra info: under "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" in the Device Manager I have 4 instances of nVidia High Definition Audio, and 1 instance of Realtek High Definition Audio. Checking "driver update" tells me the drivers are up to date. Not sure why there are 4 instances of the nVidia HD Audio.)

I have Toshiba Satellite A100 model.
My speakers do not sound right.
Left speaker does not work at all.
They give a crackling sound.
Audio, video does not sound right.
Whenever I play a song it gives a feeling of speakers are blasted.
When I turn the volume down they sound a bit ok.

Advice needed.
Do I need to replace speakers or I have to update the drivers?

After reading your posting I think speakers are defective and must be replaced.
You can try to change some sound settings to see if something will change.

Anyway I think driver has nothing to do with it and you need new speakers.

Have you tested it with headset or headphones? How it works?

I have an HP ENVY 15t-j100 Quad Edition CTO Notebook PC. The oddest thing happened the other day, I didn't drop my laptop or do anything out of the ordinary to it. One minute the speakers are fine, the next minute there is a frequent popping or crackling sound coming every 20 seconds or so, even while using headphones.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver from the product website to no avail.

However, there is this one driver that always has a yellow exclamation mark on it called the "High Definition Audio Device". It would make sense that this driver is the culprit but its been yellow for a month now without any popping or crackling sound and it is absolutely impossible to resolve it. I completely uninstalled and re-installed my sound drivers and that didn't fix it and windows troubleshooter can't find the driver either.

I'm at a loss here guys. I don't want to have to replace the speakers on a one year old computer but I might have to. Thank you in advance for any help I can get.

Ha you tried to back up your hard-drive and find a restore point before your problem started taking it back to that time see if it's back to normal.
Remember if you try that full battery charge and mains plug in throughout restore.

Hey Guys...

So my Packard Bell Easy Note MX37-S-200 has suddenly started making persistent " Crackling " and " Popping" noises from the moment I boot it. The noise is coming from the speakers and the sound is now distorted. I have very recently got it back from the repair shop after having my AC jack replaced... I would really like to rule everything out before I start pointing fingers at the repair guy

Things I have tried - Disabling sound driver - Noise was still there and laptop just installed it again.

Running avast scan through it - Scan picked up nothing.

Played with the sound setting - Nothing changed noise still there.

Plugged in PC speakers - Noise still coming from laptop but sound came out of the speakers fine.

I have noticed also that when the laptop first starts up the noise is louder and more spaced out. I'm wondering maybe whether it is the fan? But I don't no why the noise would be coming from the speakers.

Would really appreciate any help

My guess is that based on the information provided that the wires for the speakers have either been damaged or crossed in some way where they are touching something they shouldn't causing distortion. My advice would be to take it back and tell them whats going on and make sure to have them fix it for free if they opened it and caused this problem.

Hi there.

I have just purchase a new laptop (L650-OED) which is running windows 7 - 32 bit.

The in-built speakers make a crackling noise and only work intermittently. When you adjust the volume up or down they work for a few seconds and then cut out.

I have tested the sound through the headphone jack which is working perfectly. I have also reinstalled the device driver (Conexant HD Audio 4.119.0.61) but it has not made any difference.

Is there anything else I can try or is this a warranty issue?

Hmm?. for this would mean that this has nothing to do with the sound card or with the sound driver but with the faulty speakers.

Therefore I recommend asking an technician for an notebook check? possibly the speakers needs to be replaced. If warranty is valid, then everything should be done free of charge.

Has anyone had any issues with getting BitLocker working without prompting for recovery within Win10 on this model? We purchased several 5480s and 7480s, and both models initially experienced issues where BitLocker would successfully enable and encrypt, but would prompt for the BitLocker Recovery Key at every boot. I was eventually able to get the 5480 models working by using the in-the-field downgrade to TPM 1.2, along with the 1.3.2 BIOS update, which specifically addresses "Win7" (i.e. TPM 1.2) BitLocker problems.
Try as I might, I can't find any combination of things that work with the 7480. Our imaging and boot sequence currently requires enabling Legacy ROMs in BIOS, and while we have plans to enetually move towards a straight UEFI boot sequence, it's going to require a pretty significant procedural change that we are NOT poised for right now. I noticed that there is not yet a 1.3.x BIOS revision available for the 7480, and that was the final piece of the puzzle eventually did the trick on the 5480 model. Does the 7480 suffer from the same problem, and is still pending a firmware fix? Or am I battling another problem altogether with the 7480 series?
Any information the community can provide will be helpful!

Hi All,
We have recently started ordering the Latitude 7480 Business laptops and seem to be having issues with Bitlocker passing the key to the TPM Chip.
We are building with Win 10 Enterprise image so BIOS is set to Legacy Boot rather than UEFI, but TPM is both ON and Enabled.
When we try and enable BitLocker it asks to restart the machine, on next boot in there is an error "BitLocker could not be enabled. The BitLocker encryption key cannot be obtained from the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). C:\ was not enrypted"
Doing some looking online seems there was a forum post on here just recently about the same issue and the issue was resolved by Dell releasing a new Firmware (V 1.3.3) for the devices which corrected the issue in TPM 1.2 - however these devices come with TPM 2.0, I have installed the latest firmware from their site (which is now V 1.4.6 which also includes a security patch for the Intel AMT system) but this still gives the same error.
Any suggestions?

I have a new Latitude 7480 and a new Gaming Headset EasySMX with Cinch 3,5mm Audio .
When I plug in the headset into the right audio socket then the headset will not be recognized.
There appears a Dell Assistant where you have to select some Del devices, but I have no Dell headset?
The effect is that only the build in microphone and speakers are used.
I have phone 2 houers with the Dell Support hotline but no change. They cannot help me. I have updated the bios and audio drivers, but no effect.
I thinks the problem is the "Assistent"?
I dont want to use a USB headset because of less ports.
Can anybody help me?

You should have an option for just a regular Headset, but even if you have a non-Dell headset, you should still be able to use the "Dell Headset" profile.  Can you include a screenshot of the pop-up you're seeing?  That's an important step because that's how you tell the driver how to configure the audio jack properly for the type of device you plugged in.

I wanted to know if Latitude 7480 can support USB Type C adapter to HDMI.If not, can it support USB Type C adapter to DisplayPort?
Also, is multiple external displays supported (extended mode- 2 monitors)? (1 from the hdmi port + 1 from the USB Type C port with an adapter).

I ordered the Kensington wedge lock part no N17 combination for the 7480.  The lock is lose and you can actually pull it off easily.  I read that the Noble wedge lock is the same thing.  There seem to be a problem with the lock design on the 7480 since it's not compatible with two different manufacturers.  Does anyone have a solution for this?  I miss the T-bar security lock - it's much better than this wedge ***.

It's a new Dell and it has been making crackling sound since I got it.
I spent an hour on the phone with a technician who restored the laptop with Windows 8.1 to an earlier point in time and it stopped crackling for the rest of the day, but the next day, the noise was back.
The worst are "ding" sounds, they have more crackle than ding. Video playback is bad but at least we can understand what is said. Youtube is bad. mp3 audio is bad. Crackle is there with earphones too.

We're trying to install Microsoft Bitlocker encryption on some Latitude 7480's with both Windows 10 Enterprise 64  bit 1607 & 1703.  They have the latest bios update 1.4.6 on May 31 but a Microsoft error comes up - Bitlocker could not be enabled.  The Bitlocker encryption key cannot be obtained from the Trusted Platform module (TPM).  C: drive was not encrypted.  Has anyone else seen this?

i have the same problem. Its using the original microsoft tpm 2.0 driver from 2006.  I downloaded the controlvault drivers and installed it, but it comes up with unable to start TPM code 10. It seems that the correct TPM drivers are not available for WIndows 10 x64? I have the same problem

I've got a number of 7480 Laptops.  I've been using 2 for testing.
Same BIOS version and settings, Same OS configuration, No dock attached. both have a power brick and Network Cable attached.
One laptop will wake with the press of any button on the keyboard, the other will only wake when I press the Power button.
I'm at a loss to explain why.

We have a couple of 7480s intermittently fail to boot and report an error "Hard Drive - Not installed". Select the option to go into setup and simply exit and the system boots. Not a great solution but seems to work, occassionally requiring a couple of retries. Any others having the same experience or have a more effective solution?
All system drivers and bios are the latest available from Dell.

Hi Dell Community,
As some of you know, the traditional Dell docking stations (aka E-Port Replicators) switched to the TB16 and other similar types. I only have 1 TB16 docking station that arrived so I don't know if it's defective. Basically I cannot get it to work with the 7480 and I'll add the info below. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The laptop only detects the power coming from the TB16, nothing else.

- OS Windows 10 Enterprise 64-bit
- I followed the steps on the Dell Knowledge Base [How to Use and Troubleshoot the Dell Thunderbolt Dock (TB16)
- Under Dell Thunderbolt Dock TB16 Manual Driver installation, there is no Intel Thunderbolt Controller Driver or Intel Thunderbolt 3 Firmware Update under Chipset. 
- I've updated everything else
- BIOS: initially the Thunderbolt Adapter Configuration settings were all unchecked and greyed out. I performed  a BIOS reset to factory settings and now it is still greyed out but now [x] Enable Thunderbolt Technology Support is checked. Even before and after it was checked, the TB16 still did not work.
Some techs online wrote that they had to remove the CAB files in their Windows 7/10 images and had to follow the manually TB16 install (9 steps) as a workaround. The TB16 specs confirms that it is compatible with the 7480 model.
Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is this a driver issue that we're waiting for Dell to fix or should I return the TB16 docking station back to Dell as defective?

You definitely need the Thunderbolt software installed on the PC, and the 7480 recently got a Thunderbolt firmware update.  Both are listed at support.dell.com if you just select Latitude 7480 > Drivers and Downloads > Find it myself > Windows 10 64-bit.  However, sometimes entering your actual Service Tag can filter out some updates that are applicable to your system, which is why I always specify only the model.

We recently got our TrynBuy 7480 unit and we are having issues loading an image via PXE boot. We have downloaded the CAB drivers and injected them to our task sequence. The machine can boot via pxe (IPv4/6), goes through 'Initializing Windows PE'. Machine reboots at 'preparing network' and does not go any further. Anyone with a similar issue?

Hi.I'm new to this forum, so please forgive me if this question has already been asked.
I have a problem with the WD15 dock together with the Latitude 7280/7480 series.
The problem is that a keyboard connected to the dock does not work in pre-boot.So I won't be able to for example enter "bios" with help of the external keyboard, and even worse (for the users in my orginazation anyways) enter the Bitlocker PIN with the external keyboard.
My bios version is 1.0.8.
I have tried both the USB 2.0 and the 3.0 ports on the dock.I have tried disabling Fast Boot in bios.Tried disabling Thunderbolt (since the keyboard is working on a 5480 laptop, I figured that this might be the problem).I have also tried enabling Thunderbolt Pre-boot modules, and Thunderbolt adapter boot support in bios.None of this actually helped.

If I connect the keyboard directly on the laptop it's working.
Hopefully someone here has some kind of idea what might be the problem.According to Dell support the keyboard should work in pre-boot when connected to the WD15 dock.

We have a laptop here that an intern typo'd the administrator password twice and now we are trying to take steps into resetting the Bios.  We have tried holding the power button down for 25 seconds (doesn't do system or admin password resets) and we have unhooked the CMOS battery from the machine (as well as taking out the regular battery out while powering it on) to try to force reset the bios.
None of this worked.  Is there a special trick to resetting the bios on these particular laptops?

My 7840's touch pad "One Finger Scrolling" functionality has become inconsistent.  It had been working fine by using the 'DellTPad.exe' application and selecting (if memory serves) 'one finger gestures'.  That option is now gone however one finger scrolling still works for awhile, and then fails and the only option to scroll using two fingers. A reboot fixes it for awhile then it starts all over again.  This problem coincided with a recent round of updates, though the touch-pad driver was not one of those updates. 
Any ideas out there?

Our drivers are fully up to date.
We are using Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit.
We have tried several adapter combos and are in need of guidance.
On my device I have a VGA connected to my main display, an HDMI>VGA adapter connected to HDMI port of dock and can run 2 monitors. That said as soon as I connect a mini display port to display port cable for my third monitor it will ONLY display in 680x450 resolution. The other 2 stay at 1680x1050. The third monitor does this 680x450 with just a VGA connected to main display, Display port to mini display port on the third monitor with the second monitor on HDMI>VGA adapter removed.
Can anyone please advise which cables we would need for a three monitor setup.
We are losing a lot of productivity with the lessened visual real-estate.

This issue has been driving me nuts and I was wondering if anyone has been able to resolve this successfully.
The laptop is not docked (at home) but connected to AC power. I close the lid and reopen the lid after a few minutes. But the screen has gone blank and the laptop does not respond to any keystrokes. So I pretty much have to resort to rebooting. Note that this does not happen always but happens once every 3-4 times.
I have searched the internet and tried everything - disable Intel display drivers, disabling hibernate, enabling "Do nothing", "Do not sleep", etc. from Power Options, Updated BIOS, drivers,  - but nothing seems to help.
My old Lenovo running Windows 10 never had this issue. So I am not sure if this has anything to do with Windows 10 or something specific to Dell.
Appreciate any pointers!

I got a Dell Inspiron 1525 back in September. Runs on Vista.

A few weeks ago, I began noticing a crackling sound that was coming from the top left hand corner of the keyboard section of the laptop, right near where the 'Inspiron' logo is. It doesn't usually start until I've had the computer running for 30 minutes or so.

I called Dell and shipped the computer to their facility since it's still under warranty. They sent it back saying that they could not detect any problem with any of the hardware and therefore, did not fix anything. Sure enough, after getting it back and turning it on and being on it for 30 minutes or so, the sound is still there.

Everything about the computer works fine...the Internet, my progams. It isn't slow or anything. But this sound just doesn't sound right.

Does anyone have any ideas what this may be? Could it be an issue with the laptop's fans? If so, aren't the fans considered to be part of the hardware?

Thanks for any light anyone may be able to shed on this issue.

Is laptop staying cool or did you try to update your wireless/network card? When you listening music can you check CPU usage and temperature (with temp additional program) under task manager. Also, CPU fan is not making that noise.

This is my first post on this forum in a desperate attempt to fix my audio problem. I have been reading forums and attempting fixes for days with no avail. I hope someone here can help me :(

For about one week now my sound has been crackling/is very distorted... After reading up on forums many people have said the main cause to this problem was a driver incompatibility issue between windows vista and dell sigmatel cards. I have attempted to try and unplug/replug in the speakers while also checking checking for a possible short along the line and found nothing. I then moved onto uninstalling the sigmatel audio driver from sound drivers as well as the high definition sound codec from my drivers menu and tried to install just about every driver I could find off the internet and nothing has worked. I read on one forum that someone uninstalled and reinstalled their ATI drivers and it worked for them so I tried this as well since I have an ATI graphics card and of course it did not work either. I run an analog out from my graphics card to my TV which I use as my main monitor, when I turn up the speakers on my tv I encounter the same distortion, this is why I'm almost positive its a software issue and not hardware. I tried playing a movie through my TV with a dvd player and it was fine, and I also played music through my speakers with my ipod and no distortion. So I just recently noticed this problem. Every time I startup my system, that's when it occurs. It seems that I'm not the only one experiencing this issue since I've researched the issue and others are experiencing a similar situation. I tried playing some audio, but speakers seem to be fine.

recently after installing windows 8 my subwoofer has started producing crackling sounds when playing any video or music..i went through many similar posts on this forum but none helped...i reinstalled my windows 7 64bit provided by Dell itself and installed all the updated drivers...still its producing the same crackling sound.

Hello. Have you listened for the crackling through headphones? If the noise is not in the 'phones, only in the speaker, then probably the speaker needs to be replaced. This is particularly likely if the issue happens with both Win7 and 8, and with different audio drivers.

You can find the instructions for replacing the speaker on page 75 of the XPS L502x Service Manual.

I purchased my laptop about a month ago and just over a week ago my internal speakers stopped working and instead just make a very quiet popping/cracking sound when audio is being played. My headphone port still works perfectly tho. Every so often the speakers will start working again randomly but always eventually stop working again. Last week, I purchased a Dell Precision 5510 with Windows 7 and the audio was working fine, but on Saturday night I was watching a video on Netflix when the right-side speaker started to crackle. I followed the instructions on a number of tutorials including reinstalling the RealTek audio drivers and switching to the windows default drivers, but none of these things have gotten rid of the crackling.
Of note, the crackling only starts when the audio is raised somewhere around the 50% capacity mark or beyond, but it is a constant and persistent annoyance at that point.  I am of the belief that this is a hardware issue at this point, but any insight others could provide before I contact Dell Support would be appreciated.

When I listen to audio with headphones it comes out crackly and distorted, however, when I connect a speaker via aux cable in the same headphone jack it sounds normal. Audio from the laptop's speakers in normal as well. I have checked the headphones and it's not them that's the issue.  The crackling happens with all my headphones. 
The problem is very recent. A couple of days ago I picked up my headphones unaware they were plugged into my XPS. The jack was pulled out of the headphone jack when I picked up the headphones and it's been an issue ever since. I would have immediately assumed that It's a hardware thing with the jack although, I didn't pull it out very hard nor did it come out at a weird angle so I can't see how that could've of broken it. Also, the jack still works perfectly with external speakers so I'm not too sure what's wrong with it.
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be an enormous help:)

I had a look around for the solution and I've managed to boost it so it picks up some sound, however, not much at all.  recently bought a Dell latitude E6420 i5-2520M 8GB and I am experiencing a very annoying issue with the speakers.
The sound coming from the speakers worked until I plugged in the headphones jack into the computer for the first time - when I unplugged the headphones internal speakers stop to work completely.
What I have tried so far with no success:

Uninstall and reinstall windows audio/sound drivers
Tried Realtek drivers
Disabled headphones
Recovery and reinstall Windows 10

What is strange is that every time I uninstall and reinstall the sound drivers the speakers start to work again until i plug the jack of the headphones and again speakers stop to work. Any Idea?
Please let me know what you need to know about my computer to better understand the problem and I will amend the question accordingly.

So I recently opened my CPU because it was lagging and I thought maybe a little clean up might do the trick. So I softly brushed the drivers inside the CPU to get some dust off. However, when I turned on my PC, it seems that whenever I watch videos or play games, a loud crackling sound comes out from my speakers. I don't know what is causing this.

I have tried disabling my drivers (sound and display) but to no avail. However, if I mute the volume on my sound driver, the sound disappears. Which lead me to the conclusion that it might be a conflict of sound and display.

Since the problem only occured when I opened my CPU and cleaned it, it might also be a wiring problem or something.

Can someone help me on this?

Hello, I borrowed a Dell Latitude 630 because my Compaq nx9420 can hardly even boot up now. I'm not sure if the sound stopped after I installed a game or after I plugged my headphones into what I was pretty sure was a headphone port. I don't remember, but all I know is that I can't play World of Warcraft and I'm freaking out. Can someone please help me? It has XP.

I have looked in the control panel and on the sound and audio devices properties under volume, it sats 'No Audio Device'. Does this mean no sound card it installed. What about an onboard one? Hello.

I have a rather harmless question concerning an odd problem that has been occurring with the headphone jack on my Dell Latitude laptop. When I start up the computer and want to use the headphones, it works perfectly fine. I can even choose between using the speakers or the headphones interchangeably. However, the issues come in when I receive communication from microphones on other computers. For instance, when playing in an online game, the headphones will work until somebody says something using a microphone through the voice chat client. At this point, all sound exits the headphones and comes out of the speakers regardless of whether the headphones are still plugged in or not.

I can make a quick fix by restarting the computer, but then the cycle begins again. Like I said, it's a pretty harmless problem. Thanks ahead of time.

Hi there,

I am new to this forum.

I have a Dell Latitude D820 laptop running Windows XP SP2. 1-2 months ago, the sound suddenly stopped on it. I don't see the volume control in the tray anymore. Any application needing sound complains there is no sound board installed.

Device Manager shows yellow exclamation marks right besides "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC" and "Microsoft Kernel System Audio Device". I have tried many things:

- Uninstalling/reinstalling both
- Scanning PC for viruses (Symantec Corporate) and Spyware (Checkpoint Integrity)
- Running a Windows repair install
- Running sfc /purgecache followed by sfc /scannow
- Booting in safe mode and replacing the c:\winnt\system32\drivers\sysaudio.sys file with a file from another PC where the sound works correctly
- Setting devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1 and to see if there were any suspicious instances of drivers shown in Device Manager

I am now running out of ideas and would greatly appreciate any help! I am ready to run any diagnostic tools suggested and to post results in this thread as suggested by anyone. Many thanks in advance!

Check that Windows Audio Service is started.
Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked

Go to Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices.
On the Volume tab, make sure that the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked.
(This may be greyed out without the driver installed properly. Come back to here after installing your audio, to be sure it is set properly)

Download your chipset and install it:

Suddenly the Sound stopped working and get an Error 10 message ( Sound can not be started ) Went thru Control Panel - Sound - the Sound related Icons are greyed out. NO speaker Icon in Sys Tray either

I am kinda new to the computer world. I recently changed the motherboard in a latitude d600. Everything works fine except for the audio. I have tried to install the drivers for the onboard sound, but I get the message "Device object not present, restart the system and run setup again." I have gone through the BIOS and see the card in audio controllers, but have no way to enable/disable it. I am very much confused about how to fix this problem.
Is there anyone out there?
Is there anyone who really sees what's going on?

Hello i have a dell and i recently installed vista onto it and when i try to install any of the sound drivers from dell none would install at all, they say like it doesnt suport this software or something like that, do any of you guys have a idea? thanks

If you can't find Vista audio drivers on the Dell Support site, you may be out of luck and you will have to revert to XP. Check on the Dell site for tips and info for upgrading to Vista. You should have checked this before going to Vista in the first place

I am trying to use a 3rd party external GPU enclosure that attaches via thunderbolt, and when attached, I got the message pop-up that external GPU support was not enabled by the vendor, and as such the device will likely not work? Has Dell locked the Latitude 7480 down to no external GPU support?

Probably.  I read somewhere that since Dell is pushing their Alienware external GPU stuff that uses a proprietary connection, they never enabled external GPU support via Thunderbolt.

I recently bought a Dell Latitude E6410 with Win 10. I have problem with its sound and mic. When I active the mic, I don't have sound on internal speaker, when I fix the sound, then the mic doesn't work. If I add an external mic it does work with sound together but not in all apps. For example, they don't work together on Skype. 
When I used Dell driver checks, it showed me the BIOS needs to be updated, but when I want to update it gives me error.

Hello. Dell does not support Windows 8, 8.1, or 10 on the Latitude E6410 model and cautions that you might lose some functionality if you do run Win10. You can see the notice on the E6410 support page.
The E6410 has IDT audio hardware on the motherboard. The IDT company went out of the consumer audio business before Windows 10 came out, so I doubt that there will ever be a Win10 IDT audio driver for that model.
You can try to use the IDT Win7 audio driver in Win10, by installing it while using Compatibility mode.
1. Download and save the audio driver to your desktop or any convenient location on the hard drive.  [There are two "formats" on the driver's page. Scroll down to the 2nd one, named "Hard Drive" format, and download that one, not the 1st one named "Windows Update Package".]2. Double click on the new folder to extract (unzip) the driver files.3. I own a Dell Latitude D620 service tag 2B9PN2J.
I recently had to format the hard drive and so along went all my device drivers,
i have been able to download all but sound drivers.
even from the Dell Drivers and Downloads site the following sound driver R171789 available
for my laptop does not work where else can i download a sound driver that works or which
other generic sound driver can work with my Dell...please help

I have just recently reformated the hard drive on a Dell Latitude C810.  I had installed all of the proper drivers from the Dell site for this model.  (There is no service tag so I cannot get any help from Dell.  I have no idea why, its a third hand computer.)  All worked fine except for no sound and the touchpad won't work.  I checked settings in BIOS for touchpad and all is good.  There are no errors in the device manager.  I even bought a Latitude C810 driver restore cd and still nothing.  These devices worked fine before I reformatted the drive.  I have all the updates from windows.  I am at a loss.  Anybody have any ideas?

but no luck so far. In the Sounds and Audio Devices Properties, the device volume area is greyed, so I can't adjust the volume there. I don't have external speakers, but I can't get any sound from the unit itself.

When I undock the laptop by pulling the USB-C cable out (either sleeping beforehand or not sleeping first) then I am getting an intermittent issue where the wifi claims to be disabled. The only way to resolve this is a hard reboot.
Toggling airplane mode doesn't help. Disabling and reenabling the wifi network connection doesn't help. Toggling airplane mode from Fn-PrtScr doesn't help.
It is acting as though the hardware radio is turned off (like when laptops used to come with a hardware radio switch), but with no method to turn it on again.
Looking in the system event log I can see entries from source Netwtw04, Event ID 7012 stating "radio OFF"
Drivers and bios are all up to date.

Any ideas?

Hi guys,
Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere (though I haven't been able to find anything). I'm testing a TB16 dock for use with the Latitude 7480 but cannot get it to work with the monitors. it is supplying power to the laptop, but nothing else plugged into it is recognised. I have updated all the available drivers for the 7480 and the BIOS is updated to 1.2.9.  The BIOS was updated first.
When I attempt to install the  Thunderbolt 3 Firmware update, I get an error that "No Thunderbolt controller update supported for this platform ID=0x7A0".  
I have installed the available thunderbolt drivers listed here in addition to the Thunderbolt Software 16.2.52.250
I'm running Windows 10 Pro version 1607 Build 14393.953
Short of uninstalling all the drivers and reinstalling in the right order (again), I'm running out of ideas, so any help would be appreciated.

I don't know about that particular machine but the TB firmware and controller are installed to the machine before you even plug in the dock.
If the Thunderbolt options in the Bios are greyed out, you do not have a Thunderbolt controller.  I will leave it to you as to whether you have a 2 or 3 lane Thunderbolt system.

Hello. Is your audio working at all? If so, what is showing as the default device? Which device are you trying to make be the default?
If the audio is not working at all, did the failure come with no unusual circumstances, or was it after a new program or operating system was installed?
If no audio at all, use System Restore to try to undo changes. Try to find a restore point dated from before the failure and revert to that date. Using System Restore will not delete any data files. Type "system restore" into the Start menu search box, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore.
If that does not help, remove the IDT audio driver and run on the Windows native audio driver. Go to Start>Control Panel. In the upper right corner select "View by category". Select "Uninstall a Program". Find the IDT audio driver then right click on it and uninstall it. When you reboot the computer Windows will install its native audio driver. Check that it is installed by going to the Sounds properties. If it says "High Definition Audio Device" on any of the tabs then it is the native driver. If it says "IDT High Definition Audio Codec" then it is still an IDT driver, so repeat the procedure. (Windows will keep installing IDT drivers until all that have been downloaded are removed.)

If still no audio at all, check the Windows Audio Service. Go to Start>Run and type "services.msc" (without quotes) then hit the 'Enter... Read more

I have a Dell Latitude D630 and Windows 8. The generic Windows sound driver made the sound for the laptop run, but not with the docking station. I installed the Sigmatel drivers for Windows Vista 32bit. They also worked for me on Windows 7. First, they didn't wanna install, but then I made a BIOS update from Revision A03 to A18 and it solved the problem. Now again I have sound for the laptop, but when connected to the docking station the following happens:
When I set the normal speakers as output: Sound starts to play through the speakers connected to the docking station, but aborts quickly (for example the Windows sound when changing the volume).
When I set the SPDIF out as output: No sound at all!

The Sigmatel website obviously doesn't provide drivers since it's not existant anymore. The audio business was sold to IDT, but the IDT Website sucks: Detailed descriptions of all sound cards, but no drivers at all!

There was an IDT modded drivers section on laptopvideo2go.com before, but unfortunately the project is dead. I can't even find the uploaded files anymore. Anyway, one doesn't know if it works for Win 8 at all.

Generally, only Dell supplied drivers work properly on a Dell PC. Non Dell drivers will either not work or not work properly in most cases.

The sound was working fine and I had a issue with a download Adobe Reader X that conflicted with my Norton 360 security software I had Norton fix the conflict issues and shortly after that I noticed I had no sound.

hi everyone i have a dell inspirion 1501 laptop , but there is no sound from the speakers only from the headphones , and im sure the speakers are running fine because i ran diagnostics utility in dos n sound came out from the speakers but its not coming out in windows 7 same with xp

Did you raise the volume level in speaker mode. There is a micro switch in the headphone jack, try making and un-making this connection several times to see if maybe the switch is stuck.

We have recently received these new model type laptops from Dell in our company, but we seem to have issues trying to image them. We currently only can support UEFI boot imaging, but this particular model of laptop does not let us choose the boot order or pick the NIC manually.When I go to Legacy mode, I can boot network without issues, but on UEFI it does not let me select anything. Even trying to select the boot manager results into no choice and continues loading Windows factory installation.

Any solution to this? How can I boot to PXE while in UEFI?

Hi all,

I'm trying to remove the keyboard from a Latitude D510. One of the steps is to remove the "Center Control Cover" by popping it from the right hand end. Dell say this:





1. Open the display all the way (180 degrees) so that it lies flat against your work surface.

2. Starting on the right side of the computer, use a plastic scribe to pry up the center control cover. Lift it away from the computer, and lay it aside.

Anyway, I started trying to lift it off carefully using a flathead jeweller's screwdriver in lieu of the plastic gadget I had which didn't seem to be working. And at one point I heard a horrible cracking sound. So is the cracking sound normal? (I found instructions for something I was doing with a Mac and they warned that the Apple instructions fail to point out that a loud cracking sound is normal and not something to worry about!) Also, can someone please give more detailed instructions of exactly how one gets this cover off, such as where to lever step by step.

Yes lifting of that top cover does crack like hell (your poping of the holders), dont have a Dell, but did replace my KB on my Compaq laptop and thought at one point with it bending while trying to force off it would snap, best advice is to get some small flat screwdrivers and with one at the end pop another further along the cover and slowly lift that off, then move the first scredriver past the 2nd one to lift it off slowly, doing it all from one end their is chance of snapping it, so slowly moving along I find best way.

Sometimes there are videos on youtube on doing things like this but none for your model sadly.

Hello. My dell latitude D505 laptop was making a loud winding noise underneath(facing me) the left side closest to the screen. Underneath that location is a fan. Why it was making such a loud winding noise, It sounded similar to an old tape player rewinding a cassette. I don't know but I do know it's never done that before.

Does anyone know what this could be and is it safe to use my computer even though the winding noise stopped? It lasted for at least a few hours, then suddenly stopped.

Is it warm or hot in that location? It's either the HDD or CPU Fan?
If it's the CPU Fan that needs to be replaced.
If it's the HDD then backup your data or clone the HDD as the HDD is starting to go.
Normally if it's the HDD it will make clunking noises.

Dell just replaced the main board of the unit but the problem still exists.
I just also noticed that this noise issue only occurs when the main unit is connected to the keyboard dock.
When the two units are separated, this annoying noise immediately stops and I no longer hear any buzzing sound.
With that said, has anyone tried replacing the keyboard dock unit?

I doesn't seem like it's coming from CPU which is located on the top side of the main unit. This sound seems like it's coming from the very bottom of the main unit of from the keyboard unit.

The compatibility list for SED NVMe support states that the DDPE tools will support SED (OPAL) hardware encryption for the PM961 but I don't see the SM961 listed and I thought the only major difference was TLC vs MLC.  On the 7480 it shouldn't make a difference at 2x, but the write speeds will be much better on the SM series.
Is it compatible?  The performance of the Toshiba XG4 is unacceptable.  The PM961 would get closer, but it'd be best to retrofit an SM961.  Thank you for any help offered.

Hello all, this is David!

I'm having a problem with my laptop speakers. When the PC arrived they were all magic and the sound was great but now there's a buzzing sound when the PC volume goes 50%+ or even lower. I can't really tell much more. I only happens with some songs, not all. And it's really annoying. This are supposed to be good speakers, but it happens everywhere, with or without ac adapter, home not home... I don't know what to do since I don't know very much about audio.

I've had my Dell Inspiron 24-7459 computer for about a month.  Sound was coming from the internal speakers but now the sound no longer works.  I've tried the volume, mute features with no luck.  Should I be trying something different?

Hello. Did you plug in headphones or external speakers to check whether audio is coming through the headphone jack?
If audio is coming through the jack but not the internal speakers, run the ePSA audio test to see if the speakers have failed.
If there is no audio from either the speakers or jack then the problem is not the speakers, so try reinstalling the audio driver. Open the Device Manager and expand the Sounds...Controllers section. Right click on Realtek HD Audio and select to uninstall. Do not put a check mark in the option to delete the files. When you reboot, Windows will re-install the Realtek driver by rebuilding it from the files. The point of doing that is the rebuilt driver will have the default configuration which will correct any misconfiguration issue.
If that doesn't fix it the next step would be to install a fresh copy of the driver from the support page.

I received a new Dell S2716 DG to day, replacing my Dell U2416 for use with Prepar3d. Cannot get any engine sound from Via HD speakers, previously working perfectly. In The P3D options Sound I have Via HD speakers chosen. Flying without the sound, for me is very difficult. Help much appreciated. Win.10 Pro. Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti graphics i7 2.8 cpu on Asus. Maximus 111 Mobo. I am elderly (85) but can usually figure out the obvious, there are no speakers on the Dell S2716DG but the speaker option shows in the P3D options. There was a previous,now discontinued thread on this subject. Just had a look at FSX where I can disable the Dell speakers, and my VIA Hd audio works fine in FSX, however I do not use FSX nowadays, preferring P3D.
