caddy HDD isn't recognizable

Question: caddy HDD isn't recognizable

Hello guys,I've got a problem with my caddy (second) HDD in my g6.Before few days i did fresh new installation on brand new ssd (kingston v300 if it does it matter) with windows 10 on it (while installing my second HDD it wasn't in laptop). All seems perfectly fine, works well and so on....after that i decided to put my caddy hdd back in place (instead CDROM of course) and after boot it wasn't there, was unrecognizable from BIOS and from Windows.I tried with few methods to detect it :Computer Manage > Disk Managementfrom disk part in windows promptfrom Device Manager and still the same,it still unseeable.I decide a problem comes from my caddy and change with a new one (this time was with switch ,first one wasn't with it) and still the same - invisible caddy hdd. After that put hdd back in a main socket, and formatted it,try again and...nothing,try and swtich theirs places and still same.Use last version for BIOS and all drivers looks uptodate.Thanks.Best Regards

Preferred Solution: caddy HDD isn't recognizable

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

How to obtain the four screws that secure the caddy to the laptop body?

Hello to everybody!I have a HP Pavilion g6-1212sqand I would like to replace the optical drive with a HDD installed inside a caddy/or something similar. My difficulty is to find the right part on the market. I'm confusing because I saw that there is 12,7 mm size and 9,5 mm size. Is there someone that can help me indicating which of this two is good? Will be appreciated any suggestion also where I can buy it, I live in Romania. Thanks in advance to who will answer! Adrian S.

Hello again.

I'm trying to put my music production software suite on my netbook but it requires me to insert disc's. (no optical drive)

Can this be resolved by using "USB Multiboot 10" or something alike?
... or can I just sling the autorun & the data from the disc straight to flash?

Answer:Recognizable via flash

All I can suggest at this stage are these options:

1. Copy the contents of the CDs to a flash drive, as you thought, and see if it works

2. Purchase an external CD-ROM drive to save yourself this hassle in the future. It should only cost around £30

Hello,
I am desperate here as I fear that I have lost thousands of valuable pictures on my external hard drive.
Here's the background. I have two PC's and a Macbook. The PC that I originally was using the external with is a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista. I had not had any issues with this drive/pc combination until recently when I noticed it would boot/run, and then stall when I clicked "backup" (meaning, it would stay at 0 percent until I was tired of waiting and I would have to unplug it, we're talking hours at 0% backed up.). I gave up.

Finally, I decided I was going to clear off my desktop PC running Windows XP. I plugged the drive into the PC, everything ran and loaded correctly, and much to my amazement, was actually backing up stuff.

I am not very savvy when it comes to things like that. I figured, different PC, different partition or backup space. I left the room for a couple hours to do some work, and when I came back the computer was "locked". I entered the password and it acted like the whole computer had restarted. This is where the problem began.

The drive now, is not recognizable on any PC (not even my mac which I was pulling stuff off of the external to my Mac's drive). I've unplugged, restarted, researched, and done everything I can think of and the drive just acts like its not there, or plugged in. I've plugged it into many different USB's (the Toshiba laptop has 4), and nothing.

I am installing a Harddrive and some RAM into my computer no big deal right?

I put in the ram and it works fine.

I got the Harddrive from Dell, 80 Gig's, and I plug it in and it will not automatically recognize it.

I am running WINXP Home and I went to add new hardware and it still wont recognize it. It then gave me a list of what is connected to the computer and it shows the harddrive in there as being connected, but will not show anywhere (e.g. My Computer)

I then opened a command prompt window and typed

D:\

It said
Disk Not ready.

So I unhooked the main C:\ and then tried booting to see what would happen with the D:\ and it said not recognizable disk, which makes sense but it still should have something.

What do I need to do to get this set up for this to work???

Thanks

~LuMa

Answer:Hard Drive not recognizable!

The drive must be partitioned and formatted before it's recognized & useable.

In WinXP, go to Computer Management from Control panel, and you should see it there. Partition it into one or more partitions, however you want, and format each partition, with either FAT32 or NTFS. NTFS is preferable, although if your primary drive is set up as FAT32 you may want to stay with that; either one will work.

Ok, well basicly, whenever i turn the computer on, sometimes it wont connect to the internet and it says it doesnt recognize the usb device, which is my wireless adapter.

Sometimes, it will be fine and work but other times not, is there any solution to this.

OS: Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium
Wireless Adapter: Belkin
PC Model: Packard Bell IMEDIA J2422

Answer:USB Ports not recognizable on start up

Perhaps your wireless adapter is dying. Could you try using it for a few minutes on another PC?
Do you have a USB flash drive or mouse (or anything USB for that matter), that you can use to test that exact USB port, so you can see if there's anything up with it?

Hey guys,

I'm sure you've heard this story 100 times; I installed Vista, I dun like it, and I want to reinstall XP. I had Vista last year and didn't like it then, either, but I could successfully reinstall XP. I'm familiar with booting from disk in order to reinstall. I've reformatted XP numerous times, and like I said I've even successfully reinstalled XP after Vista. But this time it's not working for me. I've tried two different boot disks and for some reason my bios isn't recognizing them as boot disks. I disabled booting from my harddrive so the only drive my computer will boot from is the cd-drive. I get this error:

"Reboot and Select proper Boot device

or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key"

I haven't updated/edited my bios since the last time I reformatted so I don't think the bios is the issue. Is there something I need to edit in Vista in order for my system to recognize my boot disk? Thanks in advance.

Folks
aaarggghhhh.... right on christmas eve! lovely Canon A75 and my computer have gotten along swell for a year. Today we plug in to the computer and no dice... Turn on the camera, message pops up on the tray saying "USB device not recognized". I've tried every typical trick except for replacing the cable [only have one]. Moved to different system and got exactly the same. Changed to fresh batteries, still the same.

anyone seen this before? The system is Win XP Pro, up to date... nothing else has changed. I tried all four of the ports plus a USB hub, where it has "lived" for the last many months...... Has the cam failed? everything else about the camera works perfectly.

Answer:Canon A75 no longer recognizable Win XP USB

Hi everyone. Major problem here! I have three USB 3.0 external HDs with lots of data that I recently hooked up to my Micca media player. The Micca was connected to the wrong adapter which didn't supply enough power, making the ON light dim as soon as the HDs would get connected. None of them were playable.

Ever since then, connecting any of them to either of my laptops gets this error: "unknown usb device needs more power than the port can supply". And sometimes not even that. The devices get hot so they're not completely dead, but beyond the error notice they don't get recognized at all on the computers.

I've gone into computer manage mode and the disks don't show up there or under USB devices. I uninstalled and reinstalled all the USB ports and still nothing. I got brand new USB 3 cables today and still nothing. And just to clarify, I've tried this on two different laptops as well as TVs with USB ports. They simply don't show up. I have a USB 2.0 HD that was also hooked up to the Micca but that one is fine for some reason.

Any chance they can be fixed? If not, can the data at least be recovered?

I get this error ile is not in a recognizable format, when trying to open a .xlsx or docx file
in office 2000. I do have the compatibility pack installed.

The os is windows 7. I have uninstalled office and compatibility pack. I rebooted
reinstalled office, rebooted installed the office sp3 update, rebooted. Install
the compatibility pack. I still get the same error. On my own laptop I can open
similar xlsx and docx files.
Please help. The user has left for the day so I will not be able to troubleshoot further
until tomorrow.

Answer:The file is not in a recognizable format. OFFICE 2K

Article here seems to point to Office being unable (or unhappy) to open a file from the Open dialog. There are lots of suggestions to just double-click form Explorer.

It also mentions that there might be file corruption or an element that is converting incorrectly and causing a problem.

You say "similar" files. Can you open this file on your laptop? If you can, can you save it in a format that the other machine can see? Granted, not a great workaround.

OpenOffice (and the like; maybe even Google Docs?) should be able to read .docx files and resave them as previous versions.

Has anybody come across this ?
Does it sound Virus, Trojan etc ?

Hi there,
I have received an xls file created with Excel 2003, that suddenly gives me the error that ?This file is not in a recognizable format?. It does open with EXCEL 2003 but in gibberish:

Using Word or Notepad, it is opening in gibberish again.
I am using only Excel 2003 (no other version) and Windows XP with XP3.
I have tried to save the file in SILK format, html but still no results.

Is there any possibility I can recover the initial information contained in the file? or at least part of it.

Thank you very much in advance

Answer:xls 2003-file not in a recognizable format

Are you certain it was created in Excel 2003 and not a later version, and that it was saved as an xls 2003 file?
Can you try opening it on another computer (maybe send it to someone else if you don't have another computer you can try)?

Hi, I have an almost new ENVY 17-j150la Leap Motion SE  laptop, which was running Windows 8.1 64-bit without a problem.  Few days ago I updated it to Windows 10 Pro 64-bit and everything is working fine except for the biometric Validity Sensor (WBF) (PID=0050), which is only recognizable by the HP SimplePass software, but not by Windows natively. I want to use the native Windows Hello option, to sign in to my account, but Windows cannot read the fingerprint. When you put your finger over the sensor nothing happens (and it is connected and working, because you can see its light turned on), but when you open SimplePass software the sensor magically start reading the fingerprint (only this software, not Windows by itself). I tried to reinstall the drivers or find a solution on the web, but found nothing, reinstalling the drivers didn't solve the problem. Tried uninstalling SimplePass too, but it neither works. I want to know if there's a way or an option to make the sensor recognizable by Windows 10 and not only by the HP software, or if there's another driver we can use to make it work.  Thanks!

Answer:Validity Sensor (WBF) (PID=0050) not recognizable by Windows...

Hi, This is something to do with Windows 10, not the hardware because other software knows it. Let me tell you my story: I used one of my laptop to run Windows 10 insider preview, and the finger print reader did not work. This morning, I put the Windows 8.1 SSD back and run Windows 10 upgrade, now the finger print works. I put the Windows 10 preview back, finger print has Yellow question mark again. Regards.

Hi everyone, i have a samsung digimax v700, and when i connect it through the usb cord, it says "USB device not recognizable" it has a little error balloon notification and in device manager it is listed as Unknown Device. The exact message is "USB Device Not Recognized.... one of the usb devices has attatched to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance, click this message."

the camera is brand new, this is my first time trying to hook it up to a computer.

I have already installed the drivers, and i've tried reinstalling them, and nothing seems to work.

My next idea is to try it on another computer and i guess if i get the same message then there is a problem with the camera. ERRRRR

Hello

Can subfolders get a recognizable icon on the total area?

When i right click at a subfolder - properties - customize - mapicons > other icon - browse and then choose the .ico image i want, always get this:

The result:

What i want is the image on the total area of the folder-icon. Is this possible?

Answer:Can subfolders get a recognizable icon on the total area?

The .ico file/image isn't the right size? That's not it. There is always a boarder around icons on the desktop when you click on them.

I have the selection color the same as my desktop background color so I don't see the boarder. But that is on Windows 7.

Hello guys,

Can you help me.. My friend has this Lexar USB (Flash Disk). She asks me to delete some folders and even the Secure II folder. We thought that it is nothing because usually if it's the application of the USB it should have been the name of the USB like for example in Western Digital (I have this external USB (WD) it also has an application inside it but the name of the folder is WD. Anyway, since the folder got deleted once we put the USB to any ports of our laptop/PC and even in the television it's not recognizable. The drive is not detected at all even though there's a drive (G for removable drive.

With this, I searched for a solution and I found some solution but it did not work for me - In disk management you have to changed the drive, rebooted the PC, even having the Secure II (downloaded) application that was deleted. Unfortunately I cannot copy it inside the Lexar USB because it's not recognizable. And in the device manager there's no exclamation point. All drivers are okay.

Any resolution?

Thank you!

I had to do an entire OS reinstall on my Toshiba Satellite C55, which I did, or thought I did. After updating it for hours, last night it said it needed to install upgrades to 8.1, so I clicked for them to install, and I went to bed. This morning, when I went to turn on my laptop, it will not recognize my password.

It is the correct pw, and won't verify, and shuts down. I came to another computer to reset my Microsoft account pw, and it won't take it. So I then removed the battery, tried to restart in safe mode, tried f12 for a workaround, tried F2 to get to Bios, and NOTHING.

I've seen posts (e.g., this one) about getting the error message "This file is not in a recognizable format" when trying to open files in Excel. Apparently this can occur for various reasons, but an online search didn't turn up an answer for my own situation, so I'm posting the solution I came up with.

In my case, the error message appeared when I installed Excel 2007 on the same machine as Excel 2000 and tried to open 2000. To eliminate the problem:
Close Excel.
Go to Documents and Settings > Application Data > Microsoft > Excel > XLSTART. The folder contains a PERSONAL.XLS and PERSONAL.XLSB file.
Assuming Office 2000 and Office 2007 have been installed in separate directories in Program Files:
- Move the PERSONAL.XLS file to Program Files > Microsoft Office > Office > XLStart
- Move the PERSONAL.XLSB file to Program Files > Microsoft Office 2007 (or however it's named) > Office 12 > XLSTART.
Don't just copy the files--move them. The original folder should be empty.
Restart Excel 2000.

Answer:Solved: Excel error message: "This file is not in a recognizable format"

Thanks for that, but Microsoft recommends you do not have two versions of Office installed on the same computer - then the error would not occur.

I am having some issues with an Excel document. Yesterday, I was working from home and opened a document that was stored in our ReadyNas system. I was unable to save my document properly, and now, back at work, I tried to open the document. When I open the document, it says "this file is not in a recognizable format." How can I fix this so I don't have to make the document all over again?

Answer:Solved: Excel "not in recognizable format"

Is there any version difference between your home excel and work excel? If you have 2007 at home, then you might have saved it as a .xlsx. Unless your work version is 2007 as well, it would only be able to read xls. See if you can open it from home again, and save as in another file type.

Hi,
My Dell PC has a SATA drive and a CD drive. I added a PATA drive as slave(removed the small pin) to the CD drive. The hard disk is detected by windows but the PC boot order options setup screen does not. Moreover I get a message when I boot the PC that the drive(PATA 0) is not detected. I press F1 and I see the drive in windows explore. There is no problem after that. I have switched PATA 0 on in the boot options setup screen.

Now I have to boot the linux installer from the CD drive to install it on the new PATA drive. As I said the CD is shown as not present in the boot options screen and the installer does not boot.

What should I do to use my PATA drive normally and still boot from the CD drive ? Looking for help.

Thanks,

Hello All,

I have a Rosewill 3.5" HDD External Enclosure which is connectable via either USB 2.0 or eSATA. I moved and somehow lost all my USB cables in the mix, and so I have attempted to now connect it via eSATA. Not surprisingly, it's not recognized by Windows 7 and it asks me to initialize the disk. I remembered from my original testing when I bought the enclosure about 2 years ago that this issue occurred and at the time the only thing I could figure out was that when you set it up you picked either eSATA or USB and had to stick with it, since once it was formatted with one it wouldn't be recognized in Windows by the other.

Unfortunately, my current pickle is I don't have a USB cable, I do have an eSATA cable, and I need some data off the drive pronto like. I spent an hour Googling this issue and found other people posting with the same/similar problems, but with no helpful responses (note, don't tell me to Google it unless you've done so yourself and found a verifiable working answer by doing so). I could go to the store and buy a USB cable, but at this point I'm frustrated by this nonsensical issue and I want to figure out why it's not working how it should. Logically, there is no reason why it shouldn't be visible appropriately to Windows via eSATA if it's working via USB. It's the same drive, same partition structure, etc. The only thing I can figure is maybe the actual adapter itself inside the enclosure is re... Read more

I checked the forum and it seems Lenovo still does not have a 12.7mm caddy for the W510 so I can add a second HD. Or is there any news? Also I see recommondations for the 'Chinese' caddies but it seems despite the fact that they are 12.7mm they might still be lose. Anyways, can somebody provide some experience with these. http://tinyurl.com/2dmlkwb - Link to the 'Chinese' caddies. Thanks

Hi everyone, I recently purchased the Z50-70 laptop and so far I love it! I feel it could be a little bit faster with a solid state drive, however.  I have a 250GB 840 Evo I can throw in (with a caddy for the 1TB HDD that's already installed), but from what I've researched I can't have a 1TB HDD in the CD drive slot, but I'd rather not put the SSD there, because it wouldn't perform at full speed and would completely defeat the purpose of that drive.  I guess what I'm asking for is the maximum capacity the CD drive slot will allow for a HDD caddy? Thanks!Gage Henry

Question: M58 HDD Caddy

Hi, I want to fit a second HDD to an M58p small form factor (or whatever these small ones are called!) in place of the optical drive. I assume that Lenovo do a bracket kit for this, but I can't seem to find any part numbers etc... Anyone out there shed any light on this? Many Thanks, Mike

Answer:M58 HDD Caddy

Fitting a HDD into an optical drive bay can be accomplished with an inexpensive 3.5"--> 5.25" conversion kit available anywhere (Like the one HERE). I think Lenovo has a bracket for that but it would be really expensive. The hole for the optical drive can only be covered up by a blank bezel, that's going to be the tough part to find, if it is an issue for you at all.

Hello,
I'm having problems with my WD blue 1TB HDD (which came originally with the laptop) being recognized using it in CD-ROM caddy.
I bought Dell Inspiron 17 5767 like a month ago, and of course I want to upgrade it with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB), and then use original HDD instead of CD-ROM.
I already read the post: en.community.dell.com/.../19536697
I have Salcar caddy, which is proven good, already in previous 2 laptops, one HP and one Dell. Also the current one with this HDD was tested in older Dell and the disk is recognized and works superb. So from this I can conclude, the caddy and the disk are completely fine, something must be wrong on my new Dell side.
I upgraded BIOS (to 1.09), SATA and other drivers yesterday ... nothing changes.
The OS (on the SSD) is original as got from Dell, as the data was migrated with the Samsung utility from original HDD to SSD. Then HDD was formatted, currently has only one partition.
In BIOS I disabled Virtual machine and LAN boot settings, as they are not needed. Also, LPM is disabled, as suggested in other post. But still no change.
The HDD in caddy is not recognized in BIOS, nor Windows, nor Disk Management, nor CMD (diskpart).
I also tried to create smaller partition, about 850 GB, still not recognized. I didn't try with smaller than 750 GB, maybe should do this, but I don't believe this is a problem.
I bet there are other users out there with the same problems - did anyone got this worki... Read more

Question: 8.1 from hd caddy

Hello all,

So I find myself in an odd situation. I upgraded form xp to windows 8.1 on an old laptop I had. Since then, this laptops video card has started to go. So what I am looking to do is to take the hd from that pc, put it in a hardrive caddy, and boot from that on a different computer. For certain reasons I need to retain both OS's.

My question is this. How will Microsoft deal with the licensing in this situation. I attempted this and got a notification that I will need to reactivate windows, but does this count as a second pc in their eyes? Or can I make the call and just say that the hardware has changed.

another note, Ideally I would like to move between both computers without re licensing, but I'm assuming this might not be possible.

Question: Caddy

I need to transfer contents of an IDE hard-drive to a Sata machine. I have been told I need a caddy!. I confess I have no idea what this is.Would someone be kind enough to explain what I need and how to get it to work?.Many thanks

Answer:Caddy

This is a IDE caddy that you put your Hard Drive into. click hereThe Jumper on your Drive as to be set to Master for it to work, you then just plug it into a USB port for it to load. Do not just pull it out when you have done as this can damage the drive. In lower Task Bard near clock you will see a Icon with a Green arrow right click on this to safely remove. If you have problems shutting it down, power your PC down then remove the plug before restarting PC

... would it work (USB 2.0 interface)? I know that for extra storage, a 300Gb disc seems good value - but I get the backup storage (on DVD RW discs) and a DVD copier too - alll in one portable package - but wd this setup of an external caddy containing an internal DVD RW actually work?

Answer:CAddy & Internal DVD RW ...

CDROM caddies are not very common, but in principle I don't see why it shouldn't work. A USB2 enclosure is just a box with an IDE to USB2 adaptor. For a DVD burner, the caddy must be USB2 and your computer must support it as well (firewire would probably be slightly better). USB1 would be too slow to cope with the data transfer required for burning DVD.

Question: W510 HDD Caddy

Ok, so I have a W510, and ordered a HDD Caddy.  The box that the unit came in has 43N3412 written on it, but the actual Caddy has art number 43N3429.  It's not that big of a deal if they are the same part, but here's my issue... 1.  There is a HUGE gap at the top and bottom of the caddy which makes it look like it was never meant to be installed on this model. 2.  Whenever I carry my laptop sideways with the Bay facing down (going between meeting rooms, etc) the drive disconnects.  In order to see the drive again, I have to put pressure on it as if I am inserting the caddy into my laptop again. So, either this is not the correct caddy that was sent to me, or I have an issue with the case on my laptop in which the "catches" are not doing their job. (This does not happen with the DVD RW that came with the unit). Does anyone have one of these caddies working, and staying connected when you laptop is on its side?  If so, can you verify my part number against yours?  Cheers,Josh

Answer:W510 HDD Caddy

Hi same2you, The 43N3412 is the Serial ATA Hard Drive Bay Adapter III (Ultrabay Slim 9.5mm) and it's listed under accessories for the W510, but the W510 actually got a bay with the height of 12.7mm. So this would fit perfectly for the W500 that got a bay with the height of 9.5mm, but for the W510 there will be a gap like you describe. I believe the 43N3429 is the sparepart number of the same product. I cannot find a 12.7mm drive bay adapter from Lenovo and i don't think Lenovo ever offered a full-height 12.7mm bay adapter. If they will offer a 12.7mm drive bay adapter because of the new thinkpad models in the close future i don't know. I have seen 12.7mm drive bay adapters from ebay and other places for the T510/W510, but never seen any from Lenovo. If you google for something like "T510 drive bay adapter 12.7mm" you should find it. Whether or not the disconnect issue you describe is correct or not i don't know, but i find it hard to believe that's the way it should work. Since it's listed under accessories for the W510 i would except that it at least work fine with the gap, but i also find it strange that Lenovo doesn't offer a drive bay adapter that fit with the new Thinkpads. Maybe someone else can provide some more info about your disconnect problem, but i don't think Lenovo currently got a 12.7mm drive bay adapter. -gan

Hello, I received my P70, and I was surprise to see that the dvd isn't hotswapable like it was with my T510.  I can unscrew a screw, and change my dvd my a ssd caddy but there is one available ? When I bought the laptop, I asked for one.  They accepted my request and send one for me, but I received a Dummy caddy, it's even marked on it, DUMMY    (it's used probably to put a blank when we remove the DVD). I think that the right part is 00NY314, but I'm not sure.  Still 50$ US for that, is't a lot, it will be around 75$ CAN.  I need to be sure before I order that part. Can someone confirm that ?  With a picture will be nice, not that I don't trust Lenovo, but I received a dummy part, so...

Answer:P70 I it possible to hotswap dvd with a SSD caddy ?

While I can't speak directly to your question, It is clear that hot-swappability of this 4th drive is not a design feature of the P70.  It is a shame that the nod to manufacturing simplification (read: cost & maintenance requirements reduction) had eliminated a very useful feature. With my W700, I can and do swap-out the optical drive for an HDD often to make speedy backups or access archived data.  It is very convenient and helpful. Alas, some would argue that USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt attachment provides adequate support for these things -- I'd still prefer a unit with the easy swap option--a workstation is supposed to be all about power and flexibility.   By way of example, Samsung realized its design error in eliminating some features and re-introduced user-removable storage to its latest line of phones.

I am waiting for my new HDD drive to arrive for my laptop. The old drive is still working but not too reliable, but good enough for using as a temp storage device. If I put this old HDD into a USB caddy is it possible to copy all the data from this drive to the new drive including the Vista OS, enabling me to run Vista on the new HDD instead of the old drive. I have the recovery discs for the old drive but have been told these will not operate on the new HDD because I didn't purchase from the manufacturer. Any help appreciated.

Answer:USB Caddy to HDD copy

I never heard that a new drive would by design stop the old cd/dvd's from recovering the system. It may be that the disks simply use data on the drive that is hidden in a partition..Most new drives come with clone software. You put the new disk in the caddy and then clone it over. Then swap it. Hi, I bought a Z51 (as a christmas present for my mother).I have replaced the DVD RW with a caddy (I don't know if I can post the link here). I have set up a new SSD instead of the HDD, and installed the HDD into the caddy. I have been consistently able to boot from the original HDD (in the caddy), but only after a restart. (each time: first try, does not boot, does not appear in the boot menu. Then restart, and it works fine.) Windows 10 is now installed on the SSD and can perfectly boot (without the need of restarting), but the HDD appears neither in Windows nor in the BIOS. In fact, I have been able to mount it only once, after I launched the BIOS from the windows recovery options. Then it was recognized both in the bios and in the disk partition manager of windows 10. But I am not able to reproduce this. As this behaviour is quite strange, I was wondering if: it is a BIOS issue, a driver issue, or a caddy issue... Could you please provide me some advice ?

Answer:B50-80 hdd upgrade and caddy

Hi Vendra,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

This caddy should do fine
http://hddcaddy.com/en/lenovo-ibm-hdd-caddy/1040-lenovo-b50-hdd-caddy.html

A 9mm caddy should work as your system supports that type of ODD drive

This manual list the ODD support at page 27

Al long as you don't induce any damage while you do the upgrade, your warranty is still valid.

Hope this helps
Cheers!

I bought this HDD Caddy from NewModeUS to put an additional drive in the UltraBay adapter. There is a clear plastic layer with a tab on the end over the side of the caddy that has the perforated holes in it. Usually I've seen this tab to help pull the hard drive out of it's slot in a computer but I haven't seen it completely cover the perforated holes of the caddy before.  Anyone know if I should leave the plastic layer on the caddy or not? Answer:Hdd Caddy for bay adapte

which model caddy did you get? Also, when you say it doesn't recognise it, does the bios refuse to recognise it too?

I have been considering a HD caddy for use on the SATA interface of my Z70 and saw some for sale. But all don't have an OEM fit and require using the Optical drive face. I don't see a release for the DVD drive when I flipped the notebook over either like my ThinkPad has w/Ultrabay. I am not sure if its even supported properly by the bios and do want to be able to used the DVD drive as well. So its not a permanent solution I am looking for. Despite have ONE USB 3.0 port I still fine it quite slow moving data to 3.0 flash drives I have bought. SATA is sata and works without a fuss as fast as the drives can cache it and write. I miss ESATA port not on this notebook. It was a must have when I was looking for a notebook before and the T520 has it all but very poor screen and sound is horrible even for voice via Skype as a business system its bad and not solution for  it.

Answer:HD Caddy in a Z70-80. Anyone added it to their Z70??

I guess most of you only visit the forum to post a problem as many show single digit post numbers.I thought I'd give it a try and ask. I think I will try now to find a service manual for this Z70-80 with detailed specifications on the architecture. Then I might be able to figure out how the Sata Optical drive is configured. SATA III or not.

Easy question for you guys. I want to replace the original HD in my T60 with a larger SATA HD. Can I use the old HD carrier, or do I have to get one that's specifically designed for a SATA HD? Thanks very much in advance for the info.

Hi all, I had recently upgraded my HP 15-g002ax with an SSD which now has no additional HDD slots.I believe the DVD drive can be replaced with an HDD + Caddy combination.I understand my laptop needs a 9.5mm one, but it seems there are several types of Caddied - SATA/Universal/Unibody etc. Could anyone assist me with a Caddy compatible with my laptop? Current laptop specifications: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-15-Notebook-PC-series/6545564/model/7101305/document/c0431501...

I've taken an IDE HD from my now-defunct old Windows ME computer, placed it in an appropriate caddy and connected it to my newish WinXP machine. The intention was to wipe it and use it as an image and data file back-up. At this point it occurred to me that it would be sensible to look at its contents just in case there was anything left on it worth keeping. However, I'm not sure how to do this, or even if it's possible at this stage. It is recognised in the Disk Management window as Disk03 (but no drive letter), with the right capacity and manufacturer's details, but is marked as not initialized and unallocated. Right-clicking brings up a sub-menu with an 'initialize' option, but I thought this was equivalent to re-formatting it so I'm reluctant to try it.It's not vital, as all the important stuff was backed up and transferred to the new computer. But any comments or advice would, as always, be gratefully received.

Answer:Reading old HD in caddy

Have you changed the jumper on the HD from Master to Slave? Also your ME HD may be FAT32 instead of NTFS. Don't know if this might make it unrecognised.

I've a couple of 3.5" HDD (SATA and IDE) taken from an old Desktop and a Samsung PVR. I also have suitable external USB enclosures. The question is which Jumper settings to use (or leave unused) when in a USB enclosure. One HDD (WD) has the Boot flag set (SATA) and the other Seagate (IDE) hasn't. Both are 200-300 GB sized. Any advice appreciated.

Answer:3.5" HDD in a USB Caddy

External IDE drive jumper position should be set as master.

Hello to all,I hope someone can help me:I have an HP laptop 15-ay 035nl and I bought a Samsung SSD 850 evo and a caddy to replace DVD reader with the HDD mounted on the laptop. What have I done:- SSD has been put in place of the HDD, caddy was not in. I installed Windows 10 and everything was great - I replaced the DVD  with caddy with inside the HDD and here the problems started because: beginning the disk was not recognized, then I mounted again and had to wait a lifetime before it could be recognized by windows. When it was recognized I tried to format it from windows but I could just delete partitions.  I had 500 gb of unallocated space. - At this point, I swapped the two hard drives putting the SSD in the caddy and the HDD inside the laptop. Windows did not start, not only appeared a blue screen saying there was a hardware failure. When I put the SSD within the pc windows it had been corrupted and I had to reinstall windows  again. Same problem happened also when I disconnected the HDD from the motherboard and there was just SSD in the  caddy. - At this point I put the SSD in the laptop and the HDD again in the caddy.  I could not get  to format the HDD neither instal windows on SSD getting the error 80300024. Once I removed the caddy I was able to install windows on the SSD Now I am very confused because I do not know if the problem is the caddy itself or the DVD controller on the motherboard. Can someone help me?Tha... Read more
