Re: Power Button won't turn off monitor

Question: Re: Power Button won't turn off monitor

I have the exact same problem, I'm using HP Envy 27 Inch screen LED Lit Monitor.. the screen keeps working but the OSD butttons are not functioning and it's not a lockout.. I tried on my other laptop and it's the same problem, it seems as if the screen freezes but keeps displaying, if I remove the HD cable and plug it again, it won't respond to it and stays black.I already performed factory setterings reset, still the same problem, everytime I need to use the screen I have to plug the adapter of the monitor off and on to make it work..Please Help!

Preferred Solution: Re: Power Button won't turn off monitor

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I tried the power button lock out suggestions: Try the below suggestion: Power Button Lockout is displayed. The monitor's Power Button Lockout function is enabled.Press and hold the Power button for 10 seconds to unlock the Power button function. If the above doesn't work then try a monitor reset.  Unplug the monitor?s power cord and hold down the monitor?s power button for 30-60 seconds. Plug the monitor back in and power it up. But the monitor still won't power off the power button is not in lockout mode.

Hi,
In reference to the following posting, http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19676126:
I am not the individual who initiated this query but I did have the same issue with my Dell Inspiron 5547, where it wouldn't turn on after a power button shut down.
I followed Hema's instructions by removing the battery and charger and then holding down the power button for a few seconds, and then putting back the parts. It seemed to have done the trick... At least for now. Is this just a temporary fix?
While doing a Google search for a solution I seem to have encountered a number of people who experienced the same issue. Can you also explain why this happens with this particular Dell laptop? Is it a model flaw?
Thank you

I have a Y530 laptop.  It originally came with Windows Vista.  I upgraded it to Windows 7 several months ago.  Lately the laptop will not come on using the power button. I have tried all the suggested remedies -- remove the battery, remove the power cord, hold the power button down for 15 seconds, reinstall the battery, reinstall the power cord.  It still will not come on using the power button. I find that if I press the "One Key" -- the key above the power button, the laptop comes on but goes to the Recovery page.  I tried doing a recovery one time, but was presented with a screen telling me there was an error with some files during the recovery.  I can understand this since I'm sure the recovery partition was designed for Windows Vista and things do not work correctly since the computer is now running Windows 7. The next time I turned the computer on using the "One Key" -- the power button still does not work -- I skipped the recovery and had the computer reboot instead.  The computer booted into Windows 7 and worked fine. This is not the ideal situation when I want to boot the computer.  I do not want to have to go to the recovery screen and reboot from there. Is there any way to get my computer to respond to the power button again? Thank you for your help, Dan Wilkinson

PowerEdge T20 won't power up, power button & fans repeatedly turn on/off forever
1 year old. Press the power button, power button lights up amber, then white, CPU fan spins up briefly, then a beep and the power button turns off and the fan shuts down. Three seconds later the cycle repeats forever until I depress the power button for 5 seconds.
Is this a bad power supply? A bad motherboard?

I recently upgraded Windows 7 to Windows 10. When I power down the system from the menu, my computer does not completely turn off. The procedure I use is described below:

Click Windows_Start_button > Power > Shutdown

The system closes applications and appears to initiate a shutdown procedure. Everything appears to be shut off, but my mouse is still lit up. I do notice that the fan stops and everything else appears to be completely shut down. When I was running Windows 7 before my upgrade, my system completely powered down.

I have a dual boot system with Linux, and when I power down from Linux, the shutdown is complete, so I don't think I accidentally did anything to the hardware or BIOS.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm pretty sure there is some tweak in Windows 10 that would fix this, but I haven't found it yet. Thanks for any suggestions you might be able to offer.

Answer:Power down button does not completely turn computer power off

I found the solution on another thread. If you have this problem try the following:
1. Log in as an administrator.
2. Right click the Menu button.
3. Left click -> Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power button does > Change settings that are currently unavailable
4. Uncheck the box next to Turn on fast startup (recommended)
5. Make sure Hibernate is unchecked.
6. Left click Save changes.
The next time you shut down the computer, it will be completely powered off. At least this worked on my machine.

I first logged out of my computer and came back and I noticed an orange light on the power button. I shut it of and turn it back on about two times with the same results of an orange light. I then shut of the the extension that houses 10 plugs. When I turned on the extension I turned on the computer the power button didn't give off a blue light or orange light. The VGA cable, mouse, keyboard, Ethernet cable are all plugged in. I later removed all the connects to the computer gave it a minute and plugged it all back in. There is a solid green light on the back under the power cable. The fans turn on there is noise coming from inside the computer a soft humming and light fan from the back of the computer. But the power button will not turn on. The monitor light is orange and says "No Input signal Input 2,Go to Power Save." When I switch to input 1 it reads "Cable Disconnected Go to Power Save." What internal issue could this be?

Salut..i was having some problems while i was installing my new hardware (now everything is ok!) but around 5-8 times i had to turn off my pc from the power button for some reason(forgot cables to connect, wrong connections, etc). Was it very bad for my power supply?
Thanks in advance

Answer:Turn off from power button!

rule of thumb: make sure the power is OFF, you are grounded (touching the PSU case) before u touch/connect/disconnect anything inside the case.

turning on and off shouldn't be a problem, you should see how much time a service tech turning on and off a machine :-)

by the way, make sure your CPU fan is connected before u close the case, reason I say this is because the CPU is probably the most expensive and easily broken component in a PC (imo of course)

My son's computer wouldn't shut down, it would close down the OS but the computer lights and HD would still be running. I did a scan, Ccleaner with its registry fix, and degfrag.. that made it work maybe twice. Now it is doing it again.
It refuses to turn off even with the power button (it shuts off then starts again, on its own - I am NOT pressing the "restart"). I have to unplug it from the wall to make it stop re-starting itself.
Any ideas?

Thanks,

It's true!!

I have a 3000-X11 and the only way to turn it on is using the DVD/CD/Media Player Switch - pressing the power button does nothing.

When the machine is active, you CAN press the power button and the machine will turn off...

Any thought and pointers would really be appreciated.

Many thanks,

Lee

Answer:3000-X11: Power button will turn off but not on!

Hi

This is a strange issue. I?m not 100% sure what the problem can be. Maybe it?s a motherboard or other hardware fault. I would recommend to contact the Toshiba service partner because has more experience with such hardware fault cases.
On the Toshiba website you will find a ASP which is responsible for your country.

Hi, I came home today and when I pressed the power button to turn on my latop, nothing happened. I pressed it multiple times, with and without some force, as well as held the button down. It still didn't turn on. I tried it with the battery in and without the battery but plugged into the charger and outlet, but nothing happened. I'm not sure if it's that the battery drained and the charger died and that my laptop has no power. Right now my laptop is plugged into the outlet with the battery in and the light next to the power insert on the laptop is unlit. Something of note that happened yesterday was that my laptop randomly shutdown and restarted a few times actually. I wasn't sure what happened, but it was fine afterwards and it said the laptop was charged. I'm thinking these two issues are related, but I don't know what happened. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Hi there
Sorry this is a little long, bear with me... hopefully someone can help me! Pressing the power button on my Dell Studio XPS does nothing, the green light on the back is on and the orange motherboard light is on so it's getting power. I've cleaned it out, checked the cables are seated properly etc and taken off the top cover to check the power button is depressing ok and seems fine (although I can't define 'fine')
One thing I noticed though, I'm no expert, but I was taught to press down the power button for 10 seconds to make sure any electricity is discharged before doing anything. I'd expect this to make the motherboard light to go off but it doesn't, it remains on for around 30 seconds and I tested this and this is the same amount of time the light takes to go off on its own, without me pressing the power button. So would this suggest it is indeed the power button that isn't working as it's not helping discharge the electricity? Or am I just assuming silly things?
I hope that makes sense! I'd be really grateful if anyone has any advice to get my pic working because I really need it. It's waaaay out of warranty so want to see if there is anything I can do before spending lots of money that I don't have.
Thanks
Chaz

I am a handicap veteran who has no use of my arms or hands. I have a working HP  envy laptop. This may sound crazy, but, I was wondering if there was a way to be able to turn on my laptop without having to have someone else  press the power button. My power button is not broken. It works just fine. I would just like to be able to turn on my  laptop all by myself. I have been searching the Internet for solutions to this question. All I have found, is basically how to fix a broken power button. I was just wondering if this is a possibility. I currently have a head tracking system as well as Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Both have allowed me to do everything on my  laptop with the exception of powering   it on. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thank you.  William Kochevar

Answer:to turn computer on ( power button )

Is your computer new and still in warranty? if the power button sticks there may be a known issue with the casing. Have you tried to reach out to the manufacture to see if there is a known issue?

Hi all,New to the forums, was wondering  if anybody has had or heard of this problem? I have a T42 that the only way you can turn it on is by plugging in the power supply, as soon as I plug it in the laptop turns on. The power button will turn it off but wont turn it on. I have tried the reset procedure, also tried it with out battery, no difference. The laptop will go into standby and out with no problems with or with out the power supply plugged in. Power supply tests good and battery holds charge.  Do I need a motherboard? Thanks for your time

Answer:T42 Power button will not turn laptop on

Welcome to the forum! Looks like it is time for another keyboard. The problem is with the power on button itself. Sometimes the power button will either stick badly or lose connection to the systemboard. If your unit is still in warranty, call tech support to replace the keyboard. This will solve the problem.  Cheers,Mark

Hey guys! Newcomer here!

Need serious help with my 4 months old PC which I built myself.

It has been working fine, until recently. Basically, the PC would not turn on after clicking the Power button on the Case. Initially, it required 4-5 clicks, before it turned on. After couple of days, more clicks. Then now, it just does not turn on with Button clicks.

In order to Boot it, I have to Turn Off and On the PSU switch, couple of times, and it triggers something and PC comes on. When it is on, it is all stable, no issues at all. I can use it 12-15 hours, and not a single crash or power surge.

I read on many other forums regarding the issue and tried couple of solutions:

1. Tried switching the connections on the motherboard, between Power and Reset button, to see if the SWITCH is the problem. No result, so switch of the case is fine.

2. Tried removing the motherboard battery and back in, didn't help.

3. Unplugged custom lighting LED molex connector, still no result.
PC Components are:

i7 6700 (non-K) 3.4Ghz
64GB 2400mhz HyperX Fury Black
MSI z170A Gaming M5 motherboard
MSI GTX970 4Gb
Samsung Evo 500Gb SSD
Seagate 4TB green
NZXT H440 Red and Black case
EVGA Supernova 850G (850 watt Gold) PSU.
I built the PC June, 2016 - in United Kingdom. Now I moved to Turkey. And problem started here, however I haven't used the PC enough in UK anyways, so I'm not sure if Wall Socket power voltage is the issue, UK being 240v and turkey has 220v, according to googl... Read more

I need some help. I have acomputer monitor that is roughly 10 years old. THe monitor last night decided to suddenly turn off and the power button started blinking. I unplugged the power to the monitor and let it sit overnight. This morning I went and plugged the power back into the monitor and pressed the power button on it. When I pressed the power button the button started blinking again. I have never had a monitor die like this and I would like to know why it died and if it can be fixed. Some more info is that i had only been on the computer for less than 2 hours. I have not spilled anything on the computer, the vent is completely uncovered, and the computer is in good working conditions according to the mannual. I need to know asap please. The tower still works perfectly fine it is only the monitor.

Answer:Monitor is black and the power button on the monitor is blinking

If you could try the monitor on another PC, that would confirm the monitor is faulty. In any case if the monitor is bad and considering its age, it would be best to just replace it. It would not be worth fixing.

One of the minor annoyances for me in Vista is the power button in Start is set to place the PC into sleep. To turn the PC off it is necessary to select the smaller button to the right and chose "shut down"No longer, for those who want the Start power button to shut the PC down, this is the solution.Control Panel.System and Maintenance.Power options.Select your power option and choose "Change Plan Settings"Click "change advanced power settings".Maximise "power buttons and lid"Maximise "Start menu power button"Click on "sleep" which will bring up options and select "Shut down"Apply and OK.If you hover over the power button in Start now you will see it confirms the changed funtion to shut down rather than sleep. It sounds more involved than it really is.

Hi, Power Button Lockout is displayed.

This is my sister's cpu i'm talking about so i have no idea if there was an error message before the following happened:

She was booting the computer and it just shut off. There is no response from the power button. Yes all the cords are plugged in inside and outside the box. The computer is kinda old, has had major problems with XP, so is back to 98. PII 266, 312 MB ram, GeForce 2 video card, 2 WD hdds. On a possibly related note, the problem with XP was that the registry was corrupted every shutdown. Could this be an issue with the mobo? I know the ram is good, and the power supply seems okay.

Another mobo-ish issue: The comp will only go past bios loading area with 2 devices on IDE 0. It hangs as if there is no hdds in it if there is only one. Yes i checked the jumpers and such. Either hdd on IDE 0 fails boot if there's one, but passes whether it's master or slave if both are in.

Any help would be appreciated.

My Satellite P750-02R part number PSAY3A-02R001 wont power on from the on/off button but will only start up by touching the Play/Pause button on the media panel above the keyboard.

I've checked the BIOS at V1.90 and done a system restore. Ran diagnostics and no luck, the laptop will not turn off via the power button so if any one has any ideas I would appreciate it otherwise I have to take it back to Toshiba as it's still under warranty.
Thanks
Bruce.

Answer:Satellite P750-02R - Won't turn on by power button

Hi buddy,

I?m a little bit confused about your posting? At first you wrote that you can?t turn on your notebook via power button and then you write the notebook will not turn off via power button. That?s confusing?

Anyway, normally you have to turn on your notebook if you press and hold the computer?s power button for one or two seconds.

If you want to turn off your notebook with this button you have to configure the Windows power plan. You can set an action for computer?s power button if the notebook should shut down, stand by, hibernate or nothing. Don?t forget this must be set for every power plan if you change them.

Hey Guys/Girls!

I picked up a bargin 2TB External Hard Drive (99).

The only problem is it has no on/off switch.
I dont like the idea of leaving it on with my computer.

I can "safely remove" the hard drive and it will turn off.

But how do i get it to turn back on without messing around unplugging and replugging it back in?

or is there an easier way? :-D

Many thanks!

Chris

Hi there, I bought my Lenovo Y40 on the Lenovo Web site a couple months ago and recently, to turn on, I have to press the power button twice. When I press just once, the Lenovo`s logo is displayed on the screen, but after 2 seconds everything turns off. On the second trying, finally the laptop turns on and the windows is started. In addition, rarely the laptop stucks on the lenovo`s logo screen, being necessary to hold on the power to reset it. Has anyone had some problem like these describe above? Thank you.Pedro Lopes.

Answer:Lenovo Y40: Needs to press the power button twice to turn on

Welcome to the Lenovo Community Pedro !

Try doing what I call a soft reset of the BIOS. This can be useful in some situations to resolve hardware conflicts Here's how......1. Unplug the charger / adapter 2. Remove the battery. 3. Press and hold the Power Button for 15 seconds. 4. Re-install the battery, plug in the charger / adapter if needed and power up the system to see if the problem was resolved.

If that didn't resolve the problem then I suggest you contact Lenovo Support for warranty service.  From what you have described there is a hardware problem with the laptop that needs fixing. You can find the phone number for Lenovo Support in your country or area by using the link below....http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/supportphonelist_alt1

I just reformated my old system to install fresh Win2K, got all the service pack updates and just found out when first turning off the system I have to push the power button just like using Win95 or AT motherboard. I look in the bios, old DELL computer, it doesn't have the "soft off" feature.

One thing I notice in the bios is I didn't turn on the Plug and Play OS, set it back but nothing changed. How to fix this problem? It's very annoying when I have to wait Win2K doing the routine to turn off and have to push the button when the message "It is now safe to turn off your computer".

Answer:Need to push the power button to turn off computer

There is a setting in the BIOS setip to enable or disable ACPI support. If enabled, Windows should install as an "ACPI Uniprocessor PC" (look in Device Manager) and will handle IRQs automatically. Shutdown also works the way it is supposed to.

If ACPI is disabled in the BIOS at the time Windows was installed, the CPU will show in Device Manager as a "Standard PC", IRQ assignments can be modified by the user, and Shutdown doesn't really work. You just get a "It is safe to turn off your computer" screen.

Unfortunately, enabling ACPI support in the BIOS doesn't work after Windows is installed. You have to change the HAL (very tricky) or reinstall Windows.

Just got the notebook for my daughter for Christmas and this just happened:  I was trying to run the recommended HP updates and it said "installing" for a long time.  Meanwhile, I opened up Chrome and it locked up saying "not responding".  So I stopped the install action to see if it would help but to no avail.  Then I tried Ctrl-Alt-Del to get to the task manager but nothing.  Tried that several times.  I was finally able to get task manager open by right-clicking the task bar below.  Once in task manager I couldn't end task on Chrome.  Then I couldn't shut it down by holding the power button.  I was finally able to shut it down from the start menu.  Now the power light is on but notebook won't turn on.  I tried everthing I could find online so far with no luck.  The HP Support link was a dead link.  The only thing I am doing at the moment is trying to wear down the battery.  I've got a USB light plugged in and it is on.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Any solutions??  Thanks!

Answer:Pressing power button but PC doesn't turn on :(

K wow. I was reading on the board about a guy who had the same problem. He bought a new tower and did everything as me and had same problem. As I was reading it almost near the end the guy found out what the problem was and it was bad. He said the motherboard was touching the metal inside the tower and that that way u can fry ur motherboard in secs and that's what happened to him along wid few other things connected to it. When I read that I almost got a heart attack and felt like shyt since my PC is worth some big bucks and I just bought it 6 months ago. So widout any hope left miserably feeling I unscrewed the motherboard and I have used the plastic dunno what to call it (screws) to hold up my motherboard in the air. And for the last time I decided to press the button knowing it won't work. And guess what everything turned on and I almost shyt myself instantly from the shock and happiness and almost wanted to cry. I don't know what saved me, why my motherboard didn't fry but I know I am lucky as hell like never befo. I turned on my system and eveertyhing seems to work well other than the fact that norton antivirus cant load up it's driver and my date was resetted to default but that's it for now.

Hi everyone, I bought the brand new HP Pavilion X2 from Costco few months ago, and I think i dont like the power button at all, and I find it really difficult for me to turn the tablet on even though it was being charged or not. Sometimes, it works perfectly, sometime I get failed after several attempts of pressing and holding down the power button, but no signal light occurs. I did search the problem and I think it comes from the manufacture, and one of the solution I have seen is to bring it to the store and exchange, but I bought it in Costco, Can I bring it to Costco and ask for that service ? What should I do now ?  Thanks.Nghia Huynh

The power button on my Yoga Pro 2 is broken and nothing happens when I press/hold it. Is there another way I can turn on my laptop? I believe I have windows 8 installed. Much thanks.

Answer:Power Button Broken - Can't Turn On Laptop

You wrote this a month ago. Hopefully you have found a fix by now. But, you can use the reset button (recessed beside the power button) to power on your computer. Just select "normal boot" when given the boot menu. Should work fine. I have the same issue. Bashed the corner of my laptop and power button is unresponsive. Have to use a paper clip everytime I want to power on.  Just be aware that it disengaged the battery and forced a boot, so hibernation won't do any good when using this method to power on. Make sure you disable hibernation and don't have a plan to use it except after a full shut down.  EDIT: Correction. It will wake it from hibernation just fine by using this reset button.

Hi, FIrst of all I have not tried Wake on LAN on this S10 of mine, yet.  I don't even know if it will work or not.  Anyway, this is my main concern.  I'm planning to mount my S10 on the back of my monitor, I'll be putting a wire mesh kinda box that will hold it.  I will then hook the VGA monitor/audio cables to my S10.  I'll also be hooking my wireless Keyboard so it will look clean as possible.  With this setup, of course, the LCD lid will be closed and I'm thinking of ways on how to turn it on with the Lid closed.  I'm currently finding ways on how to do this?  I was hoping NOT to go to the rear of my monitor >> lift the S10 from the mesh box >> press the power button >> close the lid >> place it back to the mesh box mount. The wireless keyboard has a power on option (I have Logitech MK300) but does NOT work.  Would a Wired USB keyboard work? Fortunately, I have a deskop computer (which has its own monitor) that will sit beside my S10/Monitor.  The two computers (Desktop and S10) will run independently. What do you think guys?  What options can I go with?  Is my only hope Wake On LAN?  Oh yeah, it is even possible with the S10? Maybe there is a USB device or a hack that can be done (not voiding the warranty)? Thanks!

Answer:Aside from Wake on LAN, how can I turn on my S10 without pressing the Power Button?

Answer:power turn off without the power button.

HOLD the power button for 10 seconds (until you feel vibration) this will effect a soft reset ...
or you could simply let the battery run out.
To swipe down on the screen, (to power off) you don't need to be very accurate, simply swipe down from the approx middle of screen, unless the screen is non-responsive.

Hi guys,

every time I want to use my custom-built pc (Windows 10), the process goes as following:

-press power button
-wait for initial booting to start, before a noise that sounds like something being stopped
-hold down power button so it turns off
-press power button, and voila it works.

does anyone know why this could be happening? a friend suggested a clean reinstall, i've tried a partial one with the feature that allows you to keep files and that didn't fix it.

thanks

Hello lewhit, and welcome to Ten Forums.

It sounds like you may be having an issue with Fast Startup.

As a test, turn off Fast Startup (if not already) to see if that may help.

My Toshiba Qosmio f15-av201 does not turn on when the power button is pushed, though the ac adapter & battery lights are both on (lit). In fact, the yellow light that is supposed to lit the power button when the notebook is off does not appear. Additionally, there is no sign that shows the laptop trying to start up when the power button is pushed, not even a single noise. The laptop was recently disassembled ( opened) to clean fans, which made the famous monstrous noise that toshiba qosmios are apparently well known for.
Everything seems to be adequately connected in its correct place. Nothing seems to be damaged. Thus, I have no idea where i may go from here. Question unresolved.

Help will be inmensely appreciated.

The power button is located immediately above the  USB slots and is very easy to press. As a result, it is easy to end up hitting the power button by accident when reaching for the USB slots when the machine is tucked under a desk and you are going by touch. I've done it several times now. Would be great to move the power button to a less vulnerable location, or at least have it on less of a hair trigger so a light touch does not turn the machine off.

:knock: Today I came home from work and pressed the power button on the computer to which nothing happened. Not a slight power up and turn off, no lights fans, no sign of life. I used it this morning with no problems or indications of anything being wrong and turned it off when I was done, which it shut down properly. It never just turns off in the middle of gaming or anything. What could be the problem with it? Would that be the power supply? I have it plugged into a good surge protector and there was no lightning of weather effects today while I was gone. I turn it off every night before sleeping and when ever i'm done with it. Anyways, thats some usage of it. Its usually on for 6 hours a day or so and its rufly 3 weeks old. (just built). Thanks for any help you guys can give!!

After returning from a flight yesterday, I tried to start up my T60.  After pressing the power button, all the usual status lights came on.  Shortly thereafter it beeped at me four times, approximately four seconds after pushing the power key.  It then stops doing anything at all.  The power and battery lights remain on.  Pushing the power key again tuns off the power and battery lights.  The screen never comes on.  I have checked the RAM (it is secure) and have tried booting on A/C w. no battery, A/C w. battery, and on battery alone.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

So i've had my Gateway 300SE for a few years now. Around november, 2005 the computer seemed to have a problem. I left one night while leaving it on, came home and the power button was yellow. I figured it was in sleep mode, but it never seemed to turn back on. ever.
So I just bought a laptop and figured it had died.

Well, now I have to get back on that computer. I'm a graphic designer and realized my whole portfolio that I am in desperate need of now is loaded onto the hard drive of that computer. So, is there any way I could get the computer fixed... or does anyone know what possibly the problem could be? I figured something was fried in it. I'm no computer whiz, so I have no idea what to do. The only thing I can think of is to download all my old stuff off that hard drive onto a new one or whatever (I did that once but forget how, i could learn though). I'd really like to get the computer up and working though, because a computer is a computer... it'd save me some money.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Gateway 300SE has yellow power button & won't turn on

Well the most likely posibilities are the Powersupply and the Motherboard. First inspect the motherboard and any other components for phyiscal signs that they have been fried (burn Marks, burnt smell). If no phisical damage is seen replace the powersupply
Here are some links to replacements.

A 300W powersupply should be suficent but has limited upgradeibility

My laptop will not charge and it will not turn on . Heres the best way to describe it... When i plug my charger into my computer the red light blinks as well as the power button. It stays on for 3 seconds then blinks and repeats this act.  I have tried holding the power button down for 15 seconds to do a hard restart and nothing happens. My screen remains black and the power button remains blinking.  Ive tried using google remedies but none of the research has helped. My lap top is in immaculate condition, i only use it for school or work so im very confused to why my screen wont turn on. it was up and running fine two weeks ago and every since ive been trying to get it to cut on and it wont budge.

Hello, I recently bought a new Toshiba A660-1FL.

However bothers me is the lighting of the multimedia keys, if I work in the dark.
In Bios I could turn off the led illumination, but the power on/off button is still lighting, that distracts me when i am working.
This notebook has two power LED, so the power on lighting is in my opinion, unnecessary.

My question is: How can i turn off the lighting of the power button?

Answer:Satellite A660 How can i turn off the lighting of the power button?

Hi

The power button led cannot be turned off.
It?s on if the notebook is powered on.
The illumination option in BIOS controls only the multimedia buttons...

My Dell Studio 1555 laptop broke a little over a year ago when the jumper cable for the power on it snapped. Until that happened, it was working normal and perfectly fine. This wasn't a huge deal to me since I was able to recover all of my data that I needed from it and I have my desktop that I can use, so I never really got around to fixing it until now so it hasn't been used in over a year.
I just replaced the power button and it isn't turning on.
I also noticed that after I plug in the DC adapter (without the battery inserted), the white LED light by the jack briefly lights up (for about a second), then the LED turns off. After plugging in the DC adapter with the battery inserted, the white LED lights up, then the orange LED lights up instead, then the LED turns off.
Nobody should ever be this upset and frustrated and I seriously need help on what I should do. I'm really hoping that it's something that's going to be costly/expensive.

Please help!

I don't get this power button - I've set it to turn off the computer in Power options in Windows 10, but pressing it does nothing! I have to hold it for few seconds to force system to turn off but it won't turn off normally on a normal short press. At least, it does turn on the computer though.

Some time ago, the PC gave the same problem. It wouldn't turn on. When I pressed the button, it turned on but showed nothing. I had replaced the CPU and that seemed to work. I didn't use the PC that much, rarely you know. But now, after some time, it gives the same problem.
It turns on, the front light is on, it makes the normal noise the pc makes when it's turned on , but if I try to shut it down by holding the power button it just doesn't work.
So again, I tried replacing the CPU and it worked again. I kept it all day working, just to be sure, and sometimes I would restart it and it would work again. No problems at all.
So I turned it off at night, and next morning it just would make the same problem. So I tried replacing the PSU. And it worked again.
Now while I had the PC with the new PSU, I tried to insert the old CPU, and again, it would turn on.
So I bought a new PSU and installed it. The same thing, tried restarting too, and it would work. But this morning the same problem happened.

I also tried another CPU today and yet no signs of working.
I don't know now what to think.

Answer:PC turns on lights but shows nothing -- won't turn off with power button

The motherboard is most likely bad now... CPU's rarely fail. I wonder why you have had to change so many

Hi, I have a W540, BIOS version 2.11, running Windows 64 bit 8.1 and a weird issue. When the machine is completely turned off and I press the power button once, the Lenovo logo appears for a few seconds and the machine turns itself off again. When I press the power button for a second time, the Lenovo logo appears again, and the machine boots normally. A bit annoying, as you need to power on the machine 'twice'. I have all the OS defaults loaded in the BIOS, a 500GB SSD as primary drive and a 1TB secondary drive. Does anyone experience the same issue ? Thanks in advance, rhodeswarrior

Answer:W540 doesn't turn on after pressing power button once

Hello. Do you have any security passwords set for your hard drives? There was a user that reported a similar problem with his machine a couple of weeksago, and it turned out to be tied to the HD password he had set. When he turned thepassword off, the machine booted normally.

Hello,

I own a Equium L20-197 and it is currently having a power problem. It is failing to turn on at all. When the plug is in the machine the orange power light comes on to show that there is a power supply yet when I hit the power on button the buttons just flash and nothing happens.

If I hit it again all the lights go out and the whole system fails.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks,
alan

Answer:Equium L20-197 fails to turn on at all - power button flashes and nothing happens

Hi

Did you set this notebook to standby mode or hibernation mode???

Reading this description it looks like the notebook was set into one of these modes and cannot wake up.
Try to remove the battery from the notebook and disconnect the AC adapter.
Wait several times (~ 20min) and connect the battery and AC adaptor again.
Then try to power up the notebook again.

If it will be not able to start the notebook I presume the power supply electronic on the motherboard malfunctions.
In this case the contacting of service technicians would be advisable.

Help will be inmensely appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:Qosmio F15 laptop does not turn on when power button is pushed

Hmm, perhaps the power button was not plugged in again after it was disassembled?

Hello, i tried to add an extra graphics card into my computer, but after when trying to turn it on, the power button just flashes white. I tried unplugging all the cables, checked all connections and everything seems fine. My computer is asus k5130. Please help:/

Answer:Desctop pc power button blinking, computer wont turn on

The ASUS K5130 desktop appears to come with an Intel Core i3 processor and Intel integrated graphics and a 250W power supply.

Is yours using the Intel integrated graphics or does it have a dedicated graphic card?

What's the brand name and model number of the "extra graphic card" that you installed in it?

What's the brand name and model number of the power supply in it?

is there some Fn key that will do this or a program? thx

Answer:t61 is there a button or progam to turn off the screen? power man. doesn't work

If you disable system entering suspend or hibernate, you can power off screen by closing the lid. Windows power manager should do it on a timed basis, but an active task will usually prevent it. As for a key, there probably is one, but I've never looked into it. Maybe someone else can give you a better answer.

Hi everybody,

I do have a terrible problem with my notebook. It won't turn on. I had to press with all my power the power button for getting it to run.

The Chronology of my problem:
Initially it turned on when I pressed with a lot of force. But now it is not possible to bring energy in it. The power supply unit is functioning and the green light, which stands for power in the device, is permantly gleaming. I don't have a battery in use.

Only the notebook will not run.

So who can help me? How can I solve the problem by myself in order to avoid high costs?

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Toshiba satellite 1900 won't turn on. Power button is probably defect.

Hi,

in my opinion it is impossible to repair this problem of your own because you didn't have the expierence and you can't order special parts!

It can also be that not only the power button is damaged but also other parts!

So please contact a Toshiba Service Partner!

Pete

So recently my computer for work got knocked over. When I push the power on button, the computer starts to get going and makes a series of 3 clicks. Before the monitor even turns on, the computer just shuts off. I am guessing something got damaged when it got knocked over. I was hoping someone would have a rough idea.

Answer:Computer clicks when I push the power button then wont turn on

rough idea:
open it up and make sure all the cables are secure and nothing metal has been knocked around..if still no dice, then start by disconnecting each device (i would check the hard drive(s) 1st, as they are probably most prone to damage) 1 by 1 until you have eliminated all that you could, besides the power plug to the motherboard .
i would start with also checking to make sure the cpu fan didnt fall off.
