Sort folders first - then last accessed files by date

Question: Sort folders first - then last accessed files by date

In windows file explorer I am wondering if its possible to list folder first then have the last accessed files right under the folders afterwords. I need to have the ability to see folders first , then last used / modified files.

If i list folders first now, then the last accessed files comes down at the bottom.

Preferred Solution: Sort folders first - then last accessed files by date

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I understand that by right clicking on the sorting bar you can choose and add dozens of ways to sort your files. How do I apply one (Date Accessed) not just for one folder, but for on the folders on my drive?

Answer:How to sort by Date Accessed in all folders?

I'm assuming this is what you are after.
1. Click the Start Menu Orb and then Search for cmd. Once that comes up Right-Click cmd.exe and SelectRun as administrator.
2. The UAC prompt will appear… Click Yes!
3. Now in the cmd prompt, Type in “ fsutil behavior set disablelastaccess 0 “ and Press Enter.
4. Restart your PC for changes to take affect.

After restart
1. Switch the Window view to Details.
2. Right-Click category bar and Click More…
3. On the next window Scroll down and Check the box for Date Accessed and then Press OK.
That’s it! Now when you do Windows Searches it will pull up and show the Date accessed category.

Hope this helps Dan

Hello there & Happy New Year.

I have encountered this particular inconvenience on the 2nd day of 2012 while i was transfering photos and files into my PC with Win7.

In my Win7 PC, all files/folders created or modified within Dec'2011 and earlier are now all grouped under as "A Long Time Ago". This happens when I changed the folder to be "Group by Date" or "Group by Date Modified" with a combo of "Sort by type". I tried sorting in different ways of view to see if I can get it back to what it should be. Then i realised even folder newly created on 25 Dec 2011 is also grouped as "A Long Time Ago" too. I am not sure if this is an intended feature.

The only helpful part is that i will still see the newer files in chronological order if I sort by date modified on top of group by date modified.

I have been using this setting for folder view even for Win XP. As for Win XP, i will get "Yesterday", "Last Week", "Last Month", "Last Year", "Two Years Ago" and ultimately the whole chunk of much older files under "A Long Time Ago". Such perfect chronological order.

I tried to google for a while and not much of returns to this issue I am having. Perhaps majority of people does not group their files/folders in such way. But for me, I like the way how it was displayed that I know i have edited/created/moved whichever files/folders last year, the previous month or ... Read more

Good evening all.. Anyone know how to tell when a folder was last opened by time and date? In folder properties it will tell you the date it was created or altered, but I need to know when it was last viewed if possible. (I think I have someone snooping when I'm not around).
Thanks

Hello!
I have been trying to get this done for Windows 10 and wow is driving me crazy. It seems that the tweaks I find work for some folders but not for folders there I have photos which is exactly where I want to be able to do this.
I always have to go through the options and add the Date Modified first. Gets very annoying so maybe some expert out there can tell me how to do this?

Thanks!

my mom has 6 years of photos on one of her 500GB HD's. She hates windows 7. Her latest complaint that I have not been able to figure out is folder sorting.

Mom has a folder called "camera dump" in the "my pictures" folder.
In the camera dump she has 6 years of folders containing photographs.

Currently windows 7 is sorting the left side screen like this:

1-18-2013
1-21-2014
2-05-2011
2-05-2012

The problem is mom wants them in proper chronological order.. In other words, all of 2011 in proper order Jan to Dec, and 2012 after that, and 2013 after that.

1-06-2011
2-29-2012
3-09-2013
5-28-2014
Can anyone tell me how to do that? Ive tried just about every sorting option I can find in windows 7.
I suggested to her that she use YEAR master folders, then put the months inside as sub folders.

Thanks.

I posted this thread in the Hard Drive section and they told me to move it here. I still feel it's a hard drive problem, but I may be wrong.
Hi there!

Yesterday I was on my computer looking at a friend's picture on Facebook, when I started getting a bunch of harddrive errors (Hard drive failure, and some others I believe). A program called Windows Repair popped up on my screen after it downloaded itself to my desktop (see pic). My computer ran the same after these messages kept popping up but when I went to click on my C Drive icon, it was completely empty. I had a external hard drive attached to my computer as well and it was empty too (Seagate 1.5TB). I noticed all of my shortcuts on my desktop looked subdued and I couldn't click on any of them. They even began to disappear! Also, when I would go to Start and All Programs, nothing was there. I ran some full malware scans and the Windows Repair program was gone for good. The malware was gone, but my hard drive problem was still there. I tried the 'stickied' thread's solution but nothing happened when I went to restart the computer. I did everything it said but it didn't work. Also, a Files Needed window keeps popping up saying I need SynTPCo2.dll (see attached pic).

It's hard to explain but I'll give it a shot. The files still exist but do not show up. If I can find a way to get to the programs they still work as if they're still stored on my computer there's just no wa... Read more

Ive got vista x64 and Im tryin to figure out how to sort a folder by the date I DLed the contents. In Xp it was np but I cant seem to get it work in vista. Ive tried Date Received Date Modified Date Taken... everything with Date in the sort type and none of em work they either dont change at all or just end up in abc order. What Im goin for is sorting the contents exactly by date and time of how they ended up in the folder. Any ideas? Also before I forget about it. Ive got a folder on an HDD that wasnt modified when I installed vista I installed vista on a completely new HDD. Now in windows explorer in vista that folder thats on a completely separate drive is missing roughly 100 files completely randomly. Not any specific order I can find to whats missing (date, abc, etc) theyre just not showin up. The file size of the folder doesnt indicate theyve been deleted they just arent showin up.

Cleaning up the friend of a friend's completely virus infested, badly working computer.

Windows 7x64 HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC

The Basics:

While I was beginning to install and manually offline-update various anti-malware tools so that I could begin to determine what I needed to do to get this thing clean and properly operable, I noticed while looking at Programs and Features that many of the install dates for various software were dated in various months in 2013. My installations were 1 year, 2 days ahead of the current date. Windows Explorer shows this to be consistent throughout the files and folders installed.

Looking at the install dates for some of the HP proprietary software/bloatware, I can tell this behavior started some point after the computer was purchased and used (the bloatware installation date was one day after the warranty start date listed in the BIOS). I am presuming dates on files and folders created, modified, or accessed from the point of the initial occurrence of what caused these particular incorrect future timestamps are the only ones affected.

The clock and date were wrong by the exact amount forward as were the install dates for the files I installed, so, as expected, the files were taking their timestamp from the computer's time. I assume whenever the computer date and time were maladjusted is when the problem started.

I fixed the time and date, but the files and folders did not adjust their timestamps, again as expec... Read more

Date saved could have been months or years in the past. Is there a way to sort the files by the date the file was added to the directory. I need to download to the same general directory in order to avoid dups.

Thank you in advance for your reply.

Howdee to you too.
If it's in Windows explorer, just change the view to detail and press the date column to sort the either ascending or descending,
In Windows 7 you can show more columns by right clicking the top bar just check there, there are quite a few date options.

My files and folders are all out of order when I try to access them from MS Word 2007 (using File, Open), and there is no way to sort them! BUT, when I access the SAME tree of files and folders from Windows Explorer, everything is sorted A - Z perfectly. It's just that when I access these same files/folders from MS Word (using File, Open) the files/folders are all randomly listed, in a jumbled up order, and I have looked everywhere for a Sort button, but can't find one. (I can sort from Windows Explorer, but that doesn't change the order of the files and folders accessed through Word, with the File, Open commands.

This is a new problem, they used to be perfectly sorted --- and I haven't downloaded anything or done any Windows updates recently. I'm running Vista Home Premium (64 bit) and Office 2007.

Answer:Can't SORT Files + Folders

Just for chuckles take a look in the Tutorials section and see if there's anything about the Standard File Open Dialog settings. If not there, try tweak sites like Major Geeks and Annoyances.

edit: btw I don't have or use MS Word so I don't know if it uses some other dialog. But one of those tweak sites should have a fix.

That doesn't say much.

It depends upon how you want to move them. If working in a single Folder you can change the view to Details then click the heading of each column to change the lineup. If wanting to change the lineup by name you probably will have to rename some of the files to fit the scheme you desire.

When I sort my folders using "date modified," instead of ordering everything, I instead get all of the subfolders sorted, and then below that everything else, so it looks like this:

FOLDER A: 10th Jan
FOLDER B: 7th Jan
FOLDER C: 5th Jan
Randomfile.png: 12th Jan
Randomfile.mp3: 11th Jan
Randomfile.exe: 8th Jan
Randomfile.zip: 6th Jan

However, I'd like the files and folders to be mixed together and organised chronologically, like so:

Randomfile.png: 12th Jan
Randomfile.mp3: 11th Jan
FOLDER A: 10th Jan
Randomfile.exe: 8th Jan
FOLDER B: 7th Jan
Randomfile.zip: 6th Jan
FOLDER C: 5th Jan

Is there any way to do this?

is there a way when i select several folders
to sort the files in each folder by name(descending) in one click?

Answer:Sort files in selected folders

Welcome to the forum.

Windows Explorer sorting only effects how the files are displayed and does not change the contents of the folder in any way. How files are stored in a folder is fixed by the NTFS file system and cannot be changed.

Is it possible to sort your folders alphabetically while at the same time sorting your files on date?
I want to do this(see picture)

Answer:Sort folders and files differently

I never heard of split criteria. You could investigate the 3rd party file managers like Directory Opus, FreeCommander, Total Commander, Q-Dir etc..

If not mixed in one view a multi-tabbed file manager has the advantage you can set different sort and details for the same root folder and have the views come up together. Some file managers you can save tabs as a set or layout.

Edit: Also you could turn on the Treeview to see the folders on the left. There are Explorer enhancers like QTTabBar that add multiple pane capability to Explorer.

In Win 7 explorer, I note that whatever settings I use for file/folder sorting - it all appears to get over-ridden by an initial sort into a) folders and b) files. Even if a file and a folder have the same name (bar the extension) I cannot get the files and folders to intermingle as I expect.

What I get is a list of folders separately from the list of files. This is the same whether I choose List, Details, Content, etc views. I have attached a pic of a test folder I just put together to illustrate what I mean. The files and folders stubbornly insist on staying within their own groups - even though the "Group By" is set to "none".

Can this behaviour be over-ridden by some means?

In my downloads folder if I sort by date, it shows the most recent folders AND files all in the same order, whereas any other folder it separates the folders and files into separate lists. I moved my download folder to a different drive and it went back to the separating practice. I want to know how I can re-enable that behaviour? it's much more useful for certain types of folders.

Edit: I may have been wrong about how it was sorting things.. but I'd still be thrilled to be able to make it put them together as I described.

Currently I can only get all folders sorted and then all files sorted. I'd like to get them to sort together. Specifically this is for my Movies drive, which has thousands of films... most are in folders, but some are just files.

I searched here and elsewhere, but did not find any answers specifically for Win10. I also tried Xplorer2 and tried to sort by 8.3 Name, but that still did not work. My ideal solution would not include 3rd party software.

I'm open to modifying system files if need be, I just do not have the technical skills to do it without a tutorial.

All assistance is appreciated. Thank you!

I have a problem that I just can´t seem fix myself.

This is the case.
I get a lot of reports auto sent from  my clients. They arrive as attached documents in gmail.

I usually download them and sort them by hand into client specific folders in google drive with the rapports date as folder name. This takes forever!!

The last days I have tried to automatically download them by filtering the emails in gmail and using Zapier to download into the correct client folders. So far so good.

But since there is maybe 20-50 files every day per client I need to find a way to automatically save in sub maps triggered by date.

I can make Zapier create a folder BUT since the trigger for creating that new folder is the same trigger that downloads the attachments I can´t figure out how to direct it.

Now is there any smarter way to do this? Can google drive auto sort into date labelled sub folders? Any other suggestion?

Thanx!

Why is there a huge delay on the sorting of files/folders in windows explorer?

If I enter a folder that has many subfolders and extra files, it seems to load everything at once in alphabetical order, then there's a delay while it sorts the folders and the individual files separately, also in alphabetical order. This delay can be something like 5 seconds with just a few hundred items, and it just grows from there.

What's the deal? Am I the only one experiencing this? How do I change this behavior to be more like XP... snappy and instant.

Hi,

Is there an easy way to sort files/folders using multiple criteria--say by size, date and folder for instance? A free utility perhaps?

and/or

An easy way to capture the data in Wins' file explorer (view=detail) that I can bring into EXCEL?

folders sort after filesWhen in "details" view I click on "name", "Date Modified" to sort the files, folders get sorted below the files.See the attached video. How do I prevent that ?I want folders to remain at the top at all times.

Answer:Win XP Folders sort files problem (Screencast video below)

If you click on "date modified" or "date created", Windows takes no account of whether it's a file or a folder - it sorts all of them according to the date/time criteria only. You can't have it both ways.If you want all folders together, above the files, date/time criteria must be ignored, so you simply click on the "Name" column. You can't have it in name order and in date order at the same time - impossible.

What are the sort of empty folders and files one needs to be careful not to delete? And what are the best programs for empty folder and file deletion?

I am undertaking that systematic deletion for the first time. I ran Glary Utilities and found over 300 folders and removed them. Been leery of removing empty folders, because I just haven't ever gotten it straight if programs automatically create a folder if the one the program is supposed to use is deleted. I'm a professional photographer and have recently begun shooting with two cameras simultaneously at events. They use different file names to avoid duplicate names/confusion, i.e. IMG_175000 and XMG_175000. Often times I'll take a photo with one camera and then take a photo immediately after it with the other camera and I'd like both of these images to be organized in the same subfolder and shown sequentially, but by default Windows Explorer lists all the "XMG_######" photos at the end and the IMG_###### photos at the beginning. I can manually sort each individual folder by going to "Sort by - Date" or even better, selecting "Sort by - More... and putting a check mark next to "Date Taken" so that it shows up in the Sort options (which it doesn't automatically) and then sorting by Date Taken, but since I'm dealing with hundreds of subfolders with hundreds of thousands of photo and video files I'd like a way to do this for all the files in these subfolders that isn't manual.

Is there a way to make Windows Explorer automatically arrange every file (both image and movie files) inside the various subfolders inside one root folder by Date or Date Taken instead of automatically always sorting them by name?

Thanks in advance!

But now I see the same thing in Windows Explorer. Files and folders are dated in the euorpean date style.

Answer:Eurpoean Date style on files & folders??

No probs. It look like your Regional options are set wrong.

Go to control panel and edit the regional and language options.

You should have three tabs Regional Options / Languages / Advanced

Regional Options - Make sure both drop down boxes are set to English (United States)
Language - Make sure your Keyboard is set up as a US Keyboard
Advanced - Make sure that drop down box is set to English (United States)

Bearing in mind I'm from the UK but I'm pretty sure that should solve it.

Hello,I am using windows XP Professional with 160 GB hard Drive. Recently when I started my computer it started with a scan disk and started converting some folders in F: drive to files. When my computer is booted completely I realized some folder(not all) in F: Drive are converted to files(without any extensions).Actual size for few folders are around 20 GB. After changing them to files, they are now showing as 4 KB. Some are 8 KB. But overall size of the F: Drive didn't change as it still holding the data in those folders which are changed to files. I recently changed my files system from NTFS to FAT 32 on C: Drive. Please help me in retrieving the data from those folders which are showing as files now. The data I had in those folders are the final data. If I could not recover that I will loose them forever. It is not possible to gather them again.

Help! This should be easy but I can't get it to work.

I have a report that must group by Trip# and sort by ascending activity date all of the various activities that took place on multiple days of the trip.
Further, the trip with the earliest date must come first regardless of the Trip#.
I've accomplished getting the earliest starting date trip first and grouping its detail with a unique string made up of the earliest date of each trip formatted to YYYYMMDD+Trip#. This prints a trip total and works fine.

But the daily activity for the trip is out of date sequence.
Adding a Date field to the 'Sorting and Grouping' insists on breaking on and printing a sub-total for each of the trips activity dates.
Without the sorting & grouping by date the trip records are out of sequence even though the data source query is sorted ascending by activity date.

(see attachments that show the above)

The only solution I can think of is to create a sub-report sorted by activity date.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

Try unlocking the toolbar and raise it a bit. The clock will now show the time, day and date. Lock the toolbar.

I turned last Date accessed on but it is showing me accessing the file just by opening the folder not by actually viewing the file. How do I fix this to only show if I click the file itself?

Answer:Last Date accessed in windows explorer

actually it appears its only doing this the first time I open a folder after I turned on last date accessed in cmd.

It kind of annoying that it is changing all my last date accessed to today or whenever I first open the folder rather then first time I view the file. Anyway to change this?

I have an 80gigabyte seagate drive partitioned into 2 (C & D) drives 1 for the OS and the remaining for backup. I am using windows XP home. Drive D reports it is 45% used but when you click to see the contents of the drive, there are no folders or files, in explorer and in DOS. I know there are files that I backed-up in there but now I cannot access them. Just 3 weeks ago I accessed the files and folders but this week, windows explorer's "My Computer" reports the drive as with content but you cannot see any files or folders. Tried to use also DOS but to no avail. Is there a solution or cause for this mysterious behavior?

Answer:File and folders cannot be seen or accessed

I'm puzzled, why backup on the same drive.  If that drive fails all partions fail also.  Either backup on line or a second drive of some type.  On to your real question do a search "free data recovery software".  Look them over.  They might do the job.  Careful of " free downloads".  Be sure they say free software

I have a column in an Excel spreadsheet that is formatted as dd.mm.yyyy.

I need something that will read this column and output it as yyyy.mm.dd into a separate filed so Excel will sort it properly in chronological sequence.

At present the "date" sort only sorts on the first 2 numerics, ie dd and sorts then from 1-31, irrespective of the balance of the date field.

Hope someone can help.

Question: Sort date daily

I have a big problem with this daily report since I have to do it manually every single day. Is there a way to automated this in macro or vlookup . Help Name Room Status From DateWayne,G 440-2 Medicare AAA 1/23/10Chin, P 520-3 Private BBB 2/23/10King, L 422-4 Insurance CCC 1/23/10Cohen, A 545-3 Medicare AAA 2/23/101. So all patients admit for 1/23/10 will be print out of 1/23/10 Date Name Status1/23/10 King, L. Insurance1/23/10 Wayne, G. Medicare

Answer:Sort date daily

Hi,Here is a macro that should do what you want.Your source data is in a worksheet named "Source"Your report is created in a worksheet named "Report"If these are not the names used, either change the names of the worksheets or change them in these lines in the macro: 'change name of source worksheet here
strSrcWS = "Source"
'change name of report worksheet here
strRptWS = "Report"The source data is in these columns, starting at row 2 A B C D E
1 Name Room Status From Date
2 Wayne, Greg 440-2 Medicare AAA 1/23/10
3 Chin, Peter 520-3 Private BBB 2/23/10
4 King, Larry 422-4 Insurance CCC 1/23/10
5 Cohen, Alex 545-3 Medicare AAA 2/23/10
Due to the way that the macro finds the end of the source data, all cells in column A below the last data must be empty. On the report page the date will be entered in cell C1 as follows: A B C
1 Report for 1/23/10
2 Date Name StatusAdd the other headings, as shown. When the macro is run, this is the result: A B C
1 Report for 1/23/10
2 Date Name Status
3 1/23/10 Wayne, Greg Medicare
4 1/23/10 King, Larry Insurance
The macro is triggered by either changing the date in cell C1 on the report page, or to re-run for the same date, select C2, click in the formula bar and click the adjacent check mark.As changes made by Macros cannot be undone with the Undo button, test this macro on a copy of your data. Always make a backup of your Workbook before running this macro. This code has only been tested on sample data, and it has not been tested ... Read more

I am using a program that OCR's a page and then creates a folder for it inside an output folder...
Goes like this:
Input folder -> OCR program -> Output folder -> [Folder just for that document]

I keep the output folder open so that i can see the new folders being created for the OCR records, which i can then drag additional files to that records folder.
Since im dealing with thousands of folders im depending on vista to sort by date modified so that the newest one shows up on top.... But im running into a problem

I've done about 700 records now (700 folders have been created) and for some reason the date modified stopped working. Now the new folder is showing up at the end instead of the beginning. If i hit F5 to refresh the window it move to the top where it should be.... but im going through thousands of records and hitting F5 for every record consumes time and makes room for error.

Why did vista stop sorting by date modified? I didnt change anything, all of the sudden it just stopped being consistent. I can restart the computer and sometimes it will start working properly again for about 30 records, but its not guaranteee.

Please help me fix this, THANKS!

Hello, I am having difficulty getting Excel to sort by date with the following dates:

Column A
09/20/2012
09/21/2012
10/20/2012
02/20/2012

When I select "sort newest to oldest" it sorts the dates this way:

10/20/2012
09/20/2012
09/21/2012
02/20/2012

I have verified that the dates are not formatted as text and have altered the way the date is shown, trying it without the zero and with the zero and nothing changes.

Right click the folder, select properties, select the customize tab (or press Alt-V, "Customize this folder" from inside the folder) and make sure "All items" is selected from the first drop down.

I wish Vista would always just default to the All items view. It selects a bad default way too often.

Whenever I open a folder and want to "sort by date (modified)", Windows 7 sorts by descending order. I have to click again to get ascending order (in XP this was not a problem). Is there a registry hack or some other way of getting Windows 7 to sort by (modified) date in ascending order when you click on "sort by date"? Various searches have only come up with bogus or obvious answers (e.g., click again to change order, "group by" (which doesn't maintain setting when reset to "sort by date"), etc.). Thanks for any "real" help.

I've used Outlook Express for many years, so I'm somewhat embarrassed to be asking this question now. I frequently have to locate all the message sent by someone, so click the "From" column header to group the messages by sender. Problem is, I'd also like the message for each sender by in descending date order. I can't find any way to do that; it seems OE will only sort on one column and the date column is random. hi,
when i download photos from my canon camera, they are all put in a folder that is named according to the DOWNLOAD DATE. i'd like the photos to go into folders that are named according to the SHOOTING DATES. this was the behavior of windows in the past and for some reason it changed.
can you tell me how to change this and to get the photos sorted according to the date they were taken?

can you also tell me how to number the photos continuously, instead of numbering from 1 on each new date? i'd like the photos from day one numbered 1 to 14, from day two 15 to 23, and so on.

Answer:Sort downloaded photos by date taken

Hi tamirhoresh

I use the following free application to organize my images as part of my workflow.

cam2pc - Image Viewer and fully featured Digital Imaging software to Download, Organize, Modify and Share your photos

It has a down loader that should work with your camera and will allow much finer control than any of the manufacturers offerings. It will even re-name your existing structure to what you decide to go with

It can actually create folders and image filenames from the files own internal MetaData.

There is a Paid version but have found that the freeware does everything I need.

It is compatible with MS photo programs but actually contains a good set of display options so may even replace them

I have input dates into my database table in the short date formula for example: 01/07/2005. Can anyone tell me how to sort these dates in a chronological order? If i try to sort them as they are they just appear in ascending order using the first 2 numbers for example using the above date layout '01'. I have several different years on the database. How can the years and dates be sorted chronologically???Help much appreciated thankyou!!!

Answer:Access 2000 'date sort'

it sounds like you are recording the dates as text. This is why they are being sorted 01/01, 01/02 etc.The easiest solution would be to see if you can convert the field in the table to a date field. If this is not possibel then you could try either the format, or convert function in the query to convert the field to a date, then sort on that.If you need any help on the convert or format function please post back here.

One option is to create a Library with your preference. Don't know why, but Libraries are sorted folders first and then by date (if you select by date of course..)

Creating Library is simple... First make sure Libraries are shown (in file explorer in left tree right click on empty space and select New. Then you add folders.

Hello. If I select Date from the "Arranged By" field in Outlook 2007, it sorts by the date each message was received. I know that I can sort by the sent date by clicking on "Custom", then under Sort selecting Sent. This is a pain to go through all of this, however, since Outlook reverts back to the received date every time I sort by something else or search for an email, etc. I'd like to know if there is a way I can change Outlook so the default date sort is the sent date instead of the received date. I'm fine with editing the registry and what-not if need be.

Thanks in advance,

We have a list of ladies and the dates their babies are due. There's another column in the list with a date that they left our care - maybe moved away or transferred to another office. I'd like to sort the list by due date, unless they have left our care - and then have those ladies at the end of the list. So if the transfer date is blank, sort by due date, with all those transferred at the end.

The same feature exists in Vista and Win7. Just be sure to right-click on the headers at the top of ecah olumn to pick the headings you want (be sure to add Modified Date), drag the new header(s) you added to the right position you'd like them -then click on any of them to sort by that column header.

On my external hard drive, I have a ton of photos from different cameras that retain the weird file-naming scheme that the camera implements so the order is weird and out of whack. I've been wanting to organize these photos and thought the best way to do it would be to sort it by date; however, when I click the sort-by date tab, it takes FOREVER to sort it.

It's weird because this seems to only happen with certain folders and not others within the same drive so I'm pretty baffled as to why this happens and how to fix it.

I tried to do a search on the forum to see if anyone else encountered a similar problem by searching the word "sort" but I came up empty. Any help would be appreciated!

Answer:Problems with Sort by Date in Windows Explorer

Well that was quick... of course I find the solution after I make a post.

I don't know if this solution is permanent but I hope it is. Basically, what I did was I optimized the folder for "General Files" after going to the folder's Properties and clicking the "Customize" tab.

I've gone through with software to remove the duplicates but now I want to put them into folders labeled by their date created, or date modified. Is there a command for this? Or even a prog.

Answer:Command to sort 20k photos into date modified albums?

I use ThumbsPlus to organize my photos. It has an auto rename feature, so you could sort by date and then rename by year/month or whatever, but it's notsuper automated - you would basically need to rename each months worth of files, which may or may not be a lot of work.

It's not super cheap if all you want to do is rename some files, but I think it has a free 30 day trial.

Answer:accidentally exported outlook pst files and data files can not be accessed

If you have had Outlook reinstalled recently, you may need to go to Tools/Account Settings to add your personal files.

Click Tools.  Choose Account Settings.

A window will open. Click Data Files. Choose Add. Then Choose the .pst file and Click OK. Click OK to Save, it will prompt you for a password which you can enter if desired or just click OK. You will then see the list of .pst files in your Account Settings.  Click Close. (you may have more than one .pst file so you will have to repeat these steps).

This is something to try and see if it works. Your personal folders should now show up in your Navigation pane with all your other folders.

could you give me more info on your pc

A great way to do this is going to your start menu and at the search typing in dxdiag and hitting enter.

then clicking save all information (this will save it to a .txt file) and copying that information onto here

Thankyou :P

Windows 10 anniversary version.

When I sort "by date" within a folder that contains many subfolders, the sub folders are all at the top and I need to scroll down quite a bit before I come to the most recent file - which is what I really want to find. That's a nuisance.

Is there a way to sort by file date so that the most recent files are at the top instead of the subfolders?

Thanks.

Answer:Sort within folders

Hi click the column header again and you'll see files from most recent downwards.

Hoping to get some help on this question please. I have reviewed the forum and found a similar post, but the sample data is more predictable than mine and the Macro posted doesn't work on my data. See post "Excel Macro to Move data in Rows to column" 28-Aug-2008, 05:47 AM".

On my data, I would like to be able to take the yellow row, and move the data up to the previous row starting in column "R". The rows I would like on the same line, all begin with a date. I don't know how to make a looping Macro that will identify the "date lines", and take the "second date line", and move it to the "first date line's" row.

Any help would be appreciated.
I have attached some sample data. (I hope that's okay?!)

Thank you!!!!
Christine

PS - The range on data varies.

Answer:Solved: Excel Macro to sort data by date, then move to new cell

Christine,

this macro below works well with the sample data.
Code:
Sub sorting()
Dim Rng As Range, c As Range, i As Long
Set Rng = Range("A:A").SpecialCells(xlCellTypeConstants, xlNumbers)
For Each c In Rng
i = (i + 1) Mod 2
If i = 0 Then
With c.Resize(, 15)
.Copy .Offset(-1, 17)
.ClearContents
End With
End If
Next
End Sub

How it works:
1. Takes all those cells in column A of the active sheet that contain numbers. (Dates are actually numbers, only formatted to look like dates.)
2. In a loop, it takes every second cell of the set of cells selected in Step #1.
3. Takes a 15 cells wide region starting with the cell selected in Step #2, and copies it to the region starting with the cell positioned one row up and 17 columns to the right.
4. Deletes the content of the original 15 cells wide region.

Caution:
1. If there are any numbers in column A besides dates, then the algorithm is wrong and the macro will fail.
2. If the dataset in the second date line is wider than 15 cells wide then the rest will remain in place. But the macro can be easily updated, just change the Resize line.
3. Don't run it twice on the same worksheet.
4. Always make a backup copy of your data before running the macro, because it is not Undo-able.

Hi,

Somehow my sort order has been changed somehow. On another post I see that it goes to the view tab to change the order, however the view tab is not shown when I open a folder. What I see is "organize, share with, Burn, and new folder.

I would like to change back to normal aphabetical order. How do I do this?

best,

Mike

Answer:Sort Order for folders

Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable - This Tutorial disables Auto Arrange in all folders except Libraries, to allow free sorting.

When you disable Auto Arrange and either move or rename a folder, it will refresh Auto Arrange in that specific moved or renamed folder ONLY, after each time you move or rename it. Auto Arrange is still disabled for that moved or renamed folder, but you will have to arrange the files back to whatever non-auto arranged order you like after moving or renaming the folder.

Hi Forum! I've been on Windows 7 for a week. One difference I've noticed between 7 and Vista is I can't see any way to sort files in a folder (say, video, jpegs, or documents) by size. They are all automatically sorted by name. Is there a way to do this I just haven't found yet?

Thanks,

Justin

If you click the size tab it sorts by size, but then you probably know that.

Usually when I do this it will sort folders and shortcuts separately. Is there anyway to list them all alphabetically?

Answer:Is there anyway to sort folders and shortcuts by name?

1. There is a partial solution within Windows explorer itself:

right-click into the folder, group by Nameif you like, you can then select a sort by Name

This will give you intermixed folders and files, but will insert some separators that group by letters.

2. There is a trick - type * in the search field

This is not exactly equivalent to the normal explorer view.

3. Use a 3rd party file manager such as xplorer?

This seemed like a customization thing... I tried searching but in the first three pages of results I didn't find anything that related to what I was looking for. That's all my disclaimers.

So I want to be able to sort a list of folders by their size, preferably with freeware of course. Is this possible? Is it crazy? I realize that I can hover a mouse and view the size of individual folders but I'm culling a music directory with over 15,000 artist folders in it and I want to see which ones have massive discographies and which ones contain just a few songs. Repetitive and menial tasks like hovering 15000 times is the reason we made automated computers Is there any way in Win 8 to do this or do I have to wait for the software to catch up?

Hello Bable, and welcome to Eight Forums.

File Explorer in Windows 8 has this option built-in to it. OPTION ONE in the the tutorial below can help show youmore on how to.

Unfortunately Windows7 seems to forgets the correct settings.

I want all my folders to be able to be sorted by these, regardless of the type files in the folder.

How can i do this?

Answer:How can i sort my folders always by type?

Hello Funkyou,

This may be able to help you set it that way and apply the view to all folders for all folder templates in Windows 7.

Hello..i know how to sort individual tracks by album/artist or whatever but I'm trying to sort folders of albums in a main folder and for the heck of it can't figure out how to get it to do so.

Just to clarify this is my setup that I'm talking about:

D:\Music\Dance\Artist - Album Name

now in that Dance folder is about 75 albums/folders. All i can do is sort them by name. But I want to sort them by Album Name. I have the Album name column showing but its blank. I even added the folder to indexing but still nothing shows up.

Is there a way to do this?

Answer:How to sort folders of music by Album Name

To sort by Album name, you need Sort By > Album in the right click context menu. But it is not there.

Add it there.
Step 1: Right Click > Sort by > More .... In the Choose Details dialog, check the album box, click OK. Now Sort By > Album is rightly there.
Now, to add the Album column, you need to edit the music tags. I use MP3Tag in order to do this.

I have a folder which has 493 sub folders. When I choose sort by name it does not do so alphabetically the way I expect ie. first by number and then by letter. The first 458 folders are sorted alphabetically as expected. Then there is another group of 35 folders at the end that are sorted alphabetically on their own for no apparent reason. For example in the second group is a folder called 1-Downloaded files 1. This should appear at the very top of the all 493 folders but instead appears at the top of the list in the second group. I want them all to be sorted alphabetically as one set not as two sets or groups. Your advice would be appreciated.

Kind Regards

Chris

I am not always good at describing things so please bear with me and try to understand what I'm trying to ask, because I will probably make it sound different than what I mean.

I know when just opening Windows Explorer how to sort & group files and folders, that part is easy. My question however is, when uploading files to the 'net, how do I get the explorer window that opens to sort like the default Explorer window? For instance my pictures folder, I have set it to sort and group by date added, newest first. But when I go to upload pics to photobucket, I click the upload button, the explorere window opens, and the files are listed randomly. There is no sorting or grouping. In 2000, XP and 7 all three, however I sorted the main folder is how the upload folder displayed. I upload pics daily to photobucket, and every time I click upload the window opens, and I have to hunt through the whole folder to find the two or three newest pics that I haen't uploaded yet. The attached pics are "Regular_Snip" how I have main pic folder sorted and grouped, "Upload_Snip" is how the upload window looks, hopefully I made enough sense you can understand what I'm asking

Answer:Sort&Group folders for upload

Change view to Details then click on the Date column heading to change the sort order.

I have named some sub folders using this:month names using 3 lettersJanFebMarAprMayJunJulAugSepOctNovDecI want Windows Explorer  (file manager) to sow then in order.I found some articles about this kind of thing, but not exactly  what I wanted.https://www.tenforums.com/general-support/17943-how-do-you-arrange-files-month.htmlIs there a way to do this? Any answer is welcome.

Answer:How can Explorer sort folders by month?

If you created them in order you can sort by date. Then the earlier month folders appear first.Otherwise you could prefix them with numbers, then sort alphabetically.Other than that you cannot have it "detect" on it's own that the names of folders are the short names of English Months and sort on that basis anymore than you can have it detect when folders are the names of periodic elements and sort them by atomic weight. The solutions you found apply to Libraries, not folders- but, you could use that. You can create a library, add the parent folder containing those month names, set it to Pictures, then opening that library and right-clicking and arranging by Month, as shown in the link with the normal pictures library. That will arrange based on the actual date of the last modification for each file and arrange then into sets. for each month and year.

Hi guys,

I would like to sort the files in a particular folder by, say, date modified, but NOT have this setting applied to other folders in my computer. For example, I would want the files in the other folders to be sorted by name. However, I can't seem to be able to do this in Windows 8 - changing the sort settings for a particular folder applies it to every other folder.

Is there a way to customize the sort settings for individual folders without having it applied across the board? I recall being able to do it in Windows Vista/7, but can't seem to find the option in Windows 8.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:How do I set sort settings for individual folders?

Hello Desaque, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The tutorial below can help show you how to set your folder views per folder. However, it sounds like you are in a library instead of the actual folder location. In a library, all included folders share the same folder view. Only in the folder's actual location will you be able to have separate folder views. For example, "Music" library versus "C:\Users\(user-name)\My Music" folder.
