After 6 mo's working fine w/windows 10, Now locks up on keyb...

Question: After 6 mo's working fine w/windows 10, Now locks up on keyb...

I have an older desktop, Pavilion 410y. Upgraded to Windows 10 about 6 or so months ago, and it has been running fine ever since. Last week I re-booted, and it came up in auto repair mode, then locked up on a screen that says to select keyboard layout. USB keyboard and mouse will not respond. This seems to have been a very common problem when people first downloaded Windows 10, but I've not seen anyone post about it happening after months of successful use. Tried all the fixes on the interwebs. . . Then called Microsoft. They say that the Pavilion 410y is no longer compatible with Windows 10. It was when 10 was released, but with the two automatic updates since, it is no longer. Microsoft claims I can contact HP and find out what hardware is now incompatible to update it. I can't find out how to get to that point. . . At this point, I'm willing to do some low cost hardware fixes just to get me back up and running so I can verify and copy all my stuff, then get another computer soon. Anyone have any solutions/suggestions/magic? Thanks

Preferred Solution: After 6 mo's working fine w/windows 10, Now locks up on keyb...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just bought this laptop.
Amazon.com: Samsung Series 9 NP900X1A-A01US 11.6-Inch Laptop (Black): Computers & Accessories

I know the specs aren't amazing, and I can't expect the performance I get from my built desktop, but I primarily bought this for something portable for school.

Anyway, took it out of the box, started it up, everything worked great. Installed two programs (chrome and Avast), restarted after installs and played with it some.

Then I shut it down to let it charged. Turned it back on and it freezes within a minute or two after startup everytime, works fine in Safe Mode.

I would try a restore, but never created a restore point as soon as I bought it, silly me.

Any ideas?

Answer:New Laptop, Worked fine, now Windows 7 locks up right after start up.

Contact where you bought it and make them fix it, or use the built in recovery partition to restore it to factory new state. According to the manual, you press F4 during boot to start the Recovery.

My boss just bought a new computer for his office network environment.

It came with windows 10 home on it, and the network is controlled by an sbs2008, the 2 are not compatible. I was asked to Install windows 7 pro on the new machine so it could be added to the network environment without any hassle.

I made a windows 7 pro 32 bit bootable usb drive, ran into the usual usb3.0 issues with newer computers and win 7, so i added usb 3.0 drivers to it using win7-usb3.0-Creator, disabled secure boot in the BIOS as well as changing it to legacy so it actually recognizes the USB when i try to boot from it.

Mouse and keyboard worked during installation, the only remaining issue was that the partition was GPT which didnt work for win 7 , so i used CMD to diskpart, tried to convert to MBR but it wouldn't take it so ended up having to format it and then install from there.

It all went smoothly from that point on and i thought i was in the clear until i got to first time setup and had to make a user. The keyboard and mouse had once again mysteriously stopped working. So now i cannot add a user and get past the initial setup point.

I was wondering if anyone else has run into this issue and knows a potential fix.

The computer in question is an Acer tc-710-Eb51 with the following specs

i5-6400 quadcore @ 2.70 Ghz
h110 express chipset model
8gb ddr3 sdram
1tb serial ata/300
intel hd graphics 530 (onboard)

My son's PC is having problems.
He's running XP and we had a sudden power flash a few days ago where the power flashed off and immediately back on. He said since then his internet has been screwy.
The Browser (Firefox) will load up and bring up the home page. However, when I try load a different page, the browser just locks up and the CPU usage pegs at 100%. It seems to mainly be when I try to access the web. I also noticed that I have about 42 processes running at any given time. That sounds high but I'm no programmer.

I ran an XP Boost software that found about 50 invalid registry keys and I had them removed. My problem is I can't run any Anti-spywares (Adaware, Spybot) because my son does not already have them installed and if I install them on his PC, I can't get them to update files thru the web. I DID manage to install Adaware and run without updates and it said it found 300+ problems and I had them deleted as well.

Nothing has worked yet. I think it's a major spyware issue.
I also ran PCDocPro diagnostic and it said it found 413 problems. Mostly Class ID's. I'm not sure what that means.

I ran a hijack scan and if anyone can offer any suggestions I'd appreciate it so I don't have to reload Windows. I'm not sure what any of this means:

I have an NEC DVD +-RW ND-3530A disk drive in my Dell desktop running Windows XP SP3. Quite a while ago I had an issue where burning cd or mp3 discs locked up the pc completely if I used MediaMonkey (all else including video buring was fine). This now works perfectly, however the issue has now reverted to simple reading of discs whether reading picture discs, playing a dvd or simply checking a burn I had just completed. I cannot find a later driver for the one I have and there is no support on the NEC website.I don't think the drive can be faulty if it burns so well. If I am still able to use the pc after a lockup, it won't give the disc back. Most times I have to switch off by the power button and try to eject before it trys reading the disc on bootup before it locks again.Any ideas (it did read the older messages but this seems a bit different)?

Answer:DVD writer locks the pc but burns fine

The DVD burning software or similar might be locking the drive. Download & install the free Unlocker click here. Right-click the drive *when it locks-up*, & select Unlocker. Does it show if anything is locking it? If yes, unlock the process(es) within Unlocker until *nothing* is locking it any more & try again. You can also, removing & re-seating the IDE cable or another IDE cable. If no joy with the above, & nothing else helps, consider a new drive. These are only 15-20 to buy new. Let us know if you need suggestions. G

Hello,

I've got a Dell laptop here that isn't functioning properly. I can't get this to work for the life of me! I am currently using this laptop with a different hard drive, it's the install on the SSD that doesn't work. I know that the quick fix would be to simply reload windows, but I don't want the quick fix.

Basically, laptop works with Windows 7 install on a hard drive, no issues. On the SSD, where the ONLY applications loaded are Office 2013 and Firefox (and all the latest updates), the internet does not work (I can ping yahoo.com and get a response, so DNS is fine). The problem persists on IE and Firefox. I have no AV software other than MSE, and the problem persists in Safe Mode w/ networking. The hosts file is clean. The internet worked on the computer just fine when I loaded it, I hadn't used the SSD in a while and when I popped it in, the internet wasn't working. I believe something is getting in the way of port 80, but I can't figure out what. I have disabled all startup applications and all nonwindows services. The computer does not have bonjour. I have cleared history/cookies to no avail. I can't find anything suspicious in the running processes. I can't seem to turn off the windows antimalware process to test that, though.

Any ideas?

Answer:Internet not working, windows update, ping, DNS, etc. working fine

I decided to run hijack this and found two BHO's. It's funny that on my new install that I used a handful of times, I have adware, but on this install that's been going for years, I have nothing. Oh well. So I had "Crossrider" and "Coupon Companion". I removed all traces of both, yet still no go. It looks like this managed to install itself on 12/2... which had to be damn close to the date that I bought the SSD, however, I had internet activity as recent as 12/26. This is my new system:

Core 2 Duo E6750
Asus P5N-D (nForce 750i)
2X2 GB Kingston KVR800D2N5K2/2G
Asus EN8800GT
WD 250GB SATA II
500W

It works perfectly in Vista x64, however in XP SP2 32-bit, as well as XP SP2 64-bit, the system freezes randomly (often with graphical corruption in the last frame(s)) despite the fact that I've installed the latest BIOS from ASus, latest drivers from Nvidia, and all available XP updates from Microsoft. These freezes started occuring right after I installed Windows XP, without any other drivers or outside programs present.

I should also mention both XP versions run fine (well, they don't lock up) while in safe mode.

Does anybody have any idea what the problem is?

Answer:Vista runs fine, XP freezes (and locks up) randomly

sometimes this problem is due to conflict of drivers(hardware, software)or programms
and rarely to malware
in your case, as you said they work fine in safe mode,
ok, then we can suppose that either program or service would cause this
if that's right, try to disable one after one by doing this:
start ==> run ==>type "msconfig" without quotes
choose (selective startup) option and try to unckeck one by one and restart to see
for now, I have no other solution.....when I get anything new, I'll tell you

are your versions unattended?? I mean aren't they original, downloaded from microsoft or not?
and you are using Professional or Home Edition Version?

Hi,

Here's my problem. I play Yahoo games on my dell laptop (Inspiron 6000, Windows XP home edition w/ service pack 2, 512mb RAM, plenty of space of my hard drive). The java applets load fine, but when I'm finished playing and try to close the window, it usually doesn't close properly. The window may close, but it stays visible in my taskbar at the bottom of the screen and it often interferes with popup windows and opening other programs until I force it to close using Windows Task Manager. I use Microsoft Internet Explorer (v. 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.060301-1519 with SP2 update).

I assume this problem must have a fix and that it's probably been addressed somewhere on this forum as well as in a thousand other places on the Internet since it has happened on the last three computers I've used with the same operating system!! But I've searched and searched on Google and on this forum for a solution and I can't find a thing. So now I'm finally posting. Please help.

Thanks.

Hey,

I've been doing some online gaming (world of warcraft), and I kept getting these Error#131 issues. This would cause the game files to become corrupted and then I would have to repair, or reinstall. The WoW tech site says that chronic error #131 messages are either a Hard drive, Ram, or Motherboard issue.

Running the Windows Vista memory diagnostic tool has turned up some odd results, the initial test with a 1gb stick in slot #1 and a 1gb stick in slot #2 came back with errors. I then removed the ram from slot 2 and ran the test on slot 1 with 1 stick of ram.... no errors. I did the same with the other stick in slot 1.....no errors. this lead me to believe that it was slot#2 giving me the issue so I moved the ram from slot 2 to slot 3, thus having 1gb of ram in slot 1 and 1gb of ram in slot 3. After a little while......error#131 appeared.

So I then tested both sticks in slots 1 and 3 together and came back with ram errors, I then tested both sticks in slot #1, and then again in slot #2 and both tests came back fine. Any ideas on what this issue could be? I know both sticks are the same brand, speed, totally identical.

Answer:Ram Works fine in single sticks, not working fine together :P

Hi,

This is a strange one....

Whenever I boot my system, it makes it to the login screen in about 15 seconds. Then stays there frozen for about a minute before I can type in my password. The problem is due to the mouse and keyboard not working, they do eventually work if i wait long enough. The mouse is wired USB and the keyboard wireless USB.

Now where it gets weird is that the mouse and keyboard work if i hot del to go to bios setup. So they are getting power, it just that when it gets the login screen something kills all the usb ports and then bring them back on-line.

When i first installed 8.1 the delay before the keyboard worked was about 15 seconds. now it's about 1 minute.

I'm booting of an SSD with the latest i7. So speed should not be an issue.

I examined startup services, and did not see anything that should not be there.

Not sure what to do next.

BY the way, once it does boot and I'm logged in, everything works as it should.

Nick

Answer:Windows 8.1 no mouse/keyb at login for 1 minute then ok

Your answer is in your post, as you use your computer, eventually other things get added to your STARTUP. That time when you can't do anything is when Windows is booting the Drivers for your Wired Mouse and Wireless KB - Also, Sometimes a Wireless KB needs have you press the "connect" button.

If you added any new items to Startup, and you may not be aware of what has been added, you can always go in and disable the items and the "frozen" time should go back down to 15 seconds.

Look for things like Skype, Onenote, Bing Desktop, or any Messenger Apps - These can all be shut off. Leave anything else that is related to your KB and Mouse, oir if you have any server software that runs at boot- Like the server for any Remote iPhone or Droid apps.

Hello,
I am experiencing some performance issues on my PC. First of all, here are the specs:
1. Operating system - Windows 7 Ultimate x64 bit.
2. RAM - 6.00 GB (2.00 + 4.00).
3. Graphics card - AMD ATI Radeon HD 5450.
4. Processor - Intel Dual Core (3.00 GHz).

So here's the problem:
Last week I installed the new 4.00 GB RAM to my PC to make it 6.00 GB. The computer was working fine and everything was all right. Yesterday however, I turned my PC on and inserted my pen drive and transferred a .midi file which I played on my Yamaha PSR-S910 to the computer. When I was doing this I noticed that my PC was usually slow.

Next I quickly scanned my computer with the antivirus (I have Trend Micro Titanium) and I downloaded IOBIT advanced system care and did a full fix.

Now, the computer is a very little bit faster but it gives a lot of problems. Please tell me how I can get my old PC speed back...

IOBIT Smart RAM says the CPU usage is 100%! This is very bad (I think).

Answer:Windows 7 - Working fine and slowed down....

Hi i was wondering  about this,my ideacentre 300 has windows 10 on itbut i have some stuff that needs window 7  So i tried to install windows 7 as dual boot  it went kinda ok with the install but for some reason at the last screen my mouse and keyb stop workingin the last steps of windows 7 setup  i couldn't fill in serial etc   i did a reboot etc and fiddled in  somewhat bios and   in the end  i got windows 7 running But the mouse and keyb are  off and on working nowneed lots of reboot etc I was wondering how i can fix this ?   i might even kick of window 10 (without  getting rid of the boot recovery option for windows 10  )and use windows 7 (prof) only  i haven't activate it yet so  is that a possible  without risk to the keyb/mouse ?  I got it fixed. The problem was related to USB 3.0.I found this some sort of answer qoute  Solution was to change Intel xHCI Mode from "Smart Auto" to "Auto" (or just disable it) under Advanced - USB Configuration. So it will not use USB 3.0 during the boot. Note: Also make sure that Legacy USB support it set to Auto or Enabled. I can't see intel xHCI in BIOS  or anything about usb 3 disable or enable option  any tips ?

I have a HP Pavillion a1640n with Windows 7 Home 32 bit edition installed. I went to use it and it was on, and it had installed updates (even when I specified for it not to, as I had a bad experience before). And it restarted. When it restarted it then was in a Start up recovery loop. When I tried the recovery, it couldn't find anything wrong. I did some research and tried fixing the master boot record which had no effect. I tried the fix for the infinite restarting loop. No effect. I can get to the command prompt when the start up repair fails. I've tried disabling the auto restart after failure and I get the blue screen of death, and it will not start. I can not get it in safe mode either.

So I thought I'll re-install windows. Can't do that because now when I put anything in my CD/DVD drive it restarts the computer over and over and doesn't load anything! I tried getting into command prompt and trying to run it from there, nope it restarts the machine. I am lucky that I can get the cd out of there, and then it starts in the start up repair loop.

Is there a fix for this or is this computer just toast? is there a way in command prompt to disable the CD/DVD drive in case windows updated the driver and it's not compatible?

I've tried a restore point, for it to tell me that there are none and I have not disabled restore points at all in my computer.

I am trying a chkdsk and it's stuck on 19 percent complete so far.

Here are my specs: Pavillion 1640a ... Read more

Answer:Computer working fine until Windows Update

Hi guys

I have had the same internet for several years now, and it has always been working fine on both my windows 7 PC and vista laptop. However, I now have a problem connecting on Windows 7, sometimes it says the pass phrase is incorrect (even though its not) and other times it just says there was a problem connecting to the internet.

The only way I am able to connect to my windows 7 PC is if i change my router security to OPEN or WEP. It is currently on WPA2-PSK.

I have done a DNS Flush and took a screen of ipconfig /all.

Any ideas what can be causing this issue?

Answer:Cannot connect on Windows 7, Vista working fine

There is no wireless NIC showing up at all in the ipconfig, I see a bunch of extra tunnel adaptors and an Ethernet connection which isn't plugged in.

You should check the Device Manager under Network Adaptors and see if the wireless NIC shows up there or not.

I am having problems with the eSATA connection of my external SATA hard drives. The drives work fine for awhile. Then later, the connection is lost. Windows Explorer freezes (the screen goes white); the message "Not Responding" appears. My other applications stop working. I cannot close the programs or shut down the computer with Task Manager. I have the latest Windows 7 SATA driver for my computer (ASUS P5K Deluxe motherboard). NOTE: The USB 2.0 connections work fine and stay connected overnight and beyond. Western Digital said to contact Microsoft. Microsoft spent hours with me troubleshooting. Sleep settings, etc. are set correctly or disabled. Copy and move functions in Windows Explorer appear to work OK. Executing a file works for awhile (such as opening a jpg file, text file, etc.); however, after 15 minutes to half an hour (the time will vary), everything locks up. The Windows Explorer window becomes completely white.

This is very frustrating because I want to use the external drives as eSATA drives (for the speed). I also invested in two eSATA cables which are now gathering dust.

After installing a new Ethernet card, all audio output from my Dell desktop stopped working (front and back). I am using the factory installed Realtek High Definition Audio which is at Location 0 (Internal High Definition Audio Bus). Every diagnostic on the desktop, however, is showing no issues. This includes the volume mixer, the Realtek Audio Manager, Device Manger, the Control Panel's Sound tab and everything else I could find recommended in various online forums. These all show normally functioning audio. This means that when I play something on youtube, or invoke system sounds via Matlab, the mixer shows everything is good, but there is no actual audio output. I have a NVIDIA video card running two monitors, but they are DVI and their sound output is disabled.

Solutions tried:
-Restarting the computer
-Uninstalling driver and reinstalling driver
-Uninstalling driver and reinstalling latest Reaktek driver
-Sound troubleshooter (no issues)
-Fiddling with the Realtek Audio manager advanced settings, connector settings and speaker configuration
-Taking out the new Ethernet card
-Disabling and then re-enabling the reaktek driver
-Disabling and then re-enabling the NVIDIA sound driver
-Plugging into the front jacks
-Plugging into the back jacks
-Plugging into the monitors
-Connecting speakers to the above locations
-Connecting headphones to the above locations

Answer:Windows HIgh CPU usage but only after fine working for some time

Hi All,

still awaiting any answers. Anyways after much waiting I decided to finallly format my LAPTOP and I did it though as i didnt have toshiba recovery cd so i just did the normal formatting using xp professional and downloading the suitable drivers(which is a really tough job i must say). Any ways the point is the problem is still hampering my system which sometimes is smooth and then sometimes becomes very slow with cpu usage going to 100% distributed over task manager/process explorer iexplorer/firefox explorer and services. Although the machine is a bit ok now but still it is way beyond its capability. I have also tried disconnecting my wireless adapter which is cisco aironet but still the situation is same.
Plz anyone help me solve this mess...thanx

Right out of the box, Windows 7 worked just fine. Wireless worked, sound worked, even my wireless mouse worked without having to add any additional drivers.

Next I had Microsoft Update install everything that it thought I needed. Then I installed those Toshiba posted drivers that were specifically designated for Windows 7. That includes the Value Added Package that says it is for Windows 7 64 but installed OK on my Windows 7 32 version. I may install the Toshiba drivers listed for Vista in addition; haven't done that yet.

That was last night.

So far, I am pleased with Windows 7 on my netbook. It is at least as peppy as XP Home Edition if not more so.

No crashes, no blue screen of death.

Cons: well, there are some programs that I use on my desktop that I already know won't work on Windows 7 and probably never will because they are old programs and the publisher has stopped supporting the program.

If I discover any major problems with running Windows 7, I will post the information here.

Answer:Windows 7 Installed On NB205-N311/W, Working Just Fine

Some programs have problems in Win7. If Microsoft know about it, it will display a Compatibility Message and advise to update the software.

Otherwise you can run the programs in XP SP2 mode, but you wont be able to use Virtual XP Mode because the N280 CPU doesn't support Virtualization.

Not all XP programs are 100% Win 7 compatible. Probably the problem with the game. Try running the game in XP compatibility mode and see if that helps.

Ok so my Lenovo Laptop came w Win 8 which I didn't like so I shrunk the Volume and created a small partition for Win 7. All was working fine.

So, on Friday I ran out of space on the Win 7 partition & I got AOEMI partition manager and shrunk the volume on the Win 8 Partition and merged the new un-allocated space to the Win 7 partition (roughly 850 GB or so). This process however required a restart and the AOEMI program was doing things in pre boot. The pre boot took over a day and the shrinking and merging still wasn't complete so I got impatient and turned my laptop off and restarted it.

So then after restarting the laptop I went into the Win 8 OS and did something called "Allocate Free Space" and added another 20GB from the W8 Partition to the W7 partition and restarted. This process completed pre boot as well but it was very quick and completed successfully.

I was able to still boot into the Win 8 partition but not the Win 7 partition as when I went to the Win 7 OS selector it just kept saying "Attempting Automated Repairs" and showed me a black screen.

I tried to start the Windows repair USB to fix Win 7 but the Win repair utility told me "this version of system recovery options is not compatible" and so I couldn't repair.

Then I was playing around with the "Partition Recovery Wizard" on MiniTool USB boot menu and I selected multiple partitions to recover after it searched for an hour. IT recovered t... Read more

I have a laptop (windows 10) that suddenly stopped accessing a number of different random websites, including this one... saying "server DNS address could not be found". Other websites, such as Facebook and yahoo, it still accesses. It does this on the chrome browser and the IE browser. The tablet I'm typing on right now works fine however, and accesses everything without problem. This morning both were working properly; this is a sudden development.

Answer:Cant access numerous sites on windows 10 laptop; tablet working fine

By the sounds of it your internet service providers main DNS servers are having issues or, network issues. It could be due to your ISP doing network maintenance on their part as well. What can you do? Well instead of using the ISP's DNS you can use a public Google DNS. Inside your router change the DNS to 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4 However, I don't recommend that you permanently change them from your ISP.

Hello everyone. I have a Compaq SR1954NX Desktop computer that I recently reformatted and installed Windows XP Pro SP3 on. After installing some games and applications, a few days later I shut the computer off for the night. Upon the next morning my USB Mouse, a Creative Fatal1ty 1010, stopped working on it. If I unplugged it and plugged it in a different USB port, it would say "Found device, Creative Fatal1ty Mouse, Your Device is now ready to use." However it still would not do anything. However, upon entering safe mode, it works fine.

I reformatted after this, as I thought it was my mistake, and had only installed one or two small games. However, it just happened again.

Can anyone here help me with this? Thanks in advance.

My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.
Please help me out.

Answer:My Dell inspiron 3542 laptop speakers are not working, but 3.5 mm jack is working fine.

Hello. The problem could be either in the hardware or the software, so you need to test each. Perform the tests below -- it doesn't matter which one you do first.

To test the speakers, perform the Quick Audio Check in the ePSA test. If the speakers fail the test then they have failed or become disconnected. (Click the link for instructions on how to run the test.)

To test the software, switch between the Realtek audio driver and the Windows native driver. [This test assumes that your laptop has the Realtek audio driver. If you get to step 2 and do not see "Realtek High Definition Audio" then go to the Dell support page for your model and download the Realtek driver that Dell provides for the version of Windows that the laptop is running.]
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "Realtek High Definition Audio".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted,... Read more

im running an 8 month old toshiba with vista and realtek audio with updated drivers. surround sound speakers bought in iraq were used on audio output for about a week... then the speakers started acting funny, like with one speaker and one headphone working when headphones were plugged in. then the internal speakers squealed loudly whenever the computer was powered. had to take the speakers out just to get them to stop, and now audio output does not work at all. computer tests both devices as working properly, and drivers are updated.

I am not sure exactly at what point it happened but I recently found that the touch screen on my Elite X2 1011 was not working. The pen still functions normally. When checking the pen and touch settings I can only configure the pen settings and only "Pen support" is listed in view pen and touch settings. The touch screen used to work in both the original Windows 8.1 and then also after upgrading to Windows 10. There have been no error messages and the event logs do not seem to indicate any problems; it is as though the machine has just forgotten it is a touch screen. I have tried reinstalling drivers, reinstalling both Windows 10, and going back to Windows 8.1 to no avail. I really loved this little device but ease of use is cut rather drastically without the touch functionality. Has anyone else had a problem like this and have a solution? Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

ASUS Notebook G60Vx Series

Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN
A few days ago my internet suddenly stopped working. I plugged in the ethernet cord and everything worked fine. Checking the properties in the device manager showed the device was working properly, I also tried resetting it to make sure it was enabled but it did not work.

Upon troubleshooting, the "Windows Network Diagnostic" said the problems was that the Wireless adapter was not turned on. Using the switch on the front of the laptop as well as the function keys does nothing. Usually a graphic pops up showing if the WiFi is on or off, changinging transparent to show the WiFi is disabled. Now when I turn the switch on it always appears transparent, effectively going from off to off

So I know the computer reads both the function keys and the switch on the front but both methods never actually turns the adapter on. I just finished a system restore and nothing has changed

Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Answer:Wifi not working on ASUS laptop, LAN working fine

Maybe the switch or adapter is defective. Some other ideas ...

Do you have an ASUS utility to also turn the wireless on/off? (I have an HP utility on one of my laptops that will individually control the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth if the physical switch is on.)

In Device Manager right click on the adapter - Properties - Advanced tab. Sometimes there is a Property in there that allows turning the adapter on/off.

If the card is easily accessible through a cover on the laptop's bottom remove and carefully and firmly replace the card several times to fix any potential looseness or corrosion problems.

I have sort of an odd problem. I have a desktop computer that is connect to the internet wirelessly. Everything works fine there. I also have an xbox360 connected to the desktop via an Ethernet cable. I use this connection primarily to stream movies from my computer to the xbox. Today in the middle of a movie the movie stopped playing and gave me an error saying xbox isn't connected to the computer any more.
I checked the physical connection and everything was fine. I looked at my desktop (running windows xp) and noticed my LAN connection wasn't properly running. It said I have limited or no connectivity. So I tried repairing it, renewing it, disabling and re-enabling it. Nothing worked. In fact I get this error: "An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out."

I also noticed I have a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP address, if that helps at all:
EDIT: Forgot to mention I also reinstalled the driver for the LAN card.

Answer:hp pavilion 1503 stopped working...and was working fine

Its either failed to find your hard drive or failed to find the boot files on the drive.
Asuume this is a laptop?
What operating system are you using XP Vista or W7?
While in the BIOS (setup) has the machine found and recognised the hard drive?
Is the boot order set as CD rom first and HDD second?
Can you remove and refit the drive to remake the connections as that may well solve a missing drive problem?

Hi, I seem to have a little problem for some time now, I didn't care much about it at the beginning but now it got somewhat sever.
So, at some point both my wireless and cable network started showing a not connected icon even though they were connected and Internet worked all fine. So of course I ignored it, but today I tried to access another computer from my network and it says I cant do that since I am "not connected" as he reports it. And that now is very bad.
Other info: Windows 7 32bit OS, scanned deeply for viruses and other threats, everything is ok and running except what I have earlier described.

So any ideas anyone?

Answer:Internet working fine, but windows says "Not connected"

I had a same/similar problem.

But it was only Network and Sharing center SAYING I wasn't connected when I was, as well as the little network tray icon saying it.

I eventually had to uninstall my adapter in Device Manager, then reboot my PC, and let it reinstall when Windows booted up again.

Don't know if this will help, sounded similar to my issue a while back.

So I boot it in safe mode and it boots fine. I have already reinstalled my VGA drivers and still nothing. I have been attempting to fix this for a little over 3 hours now and still nothing. HELP PLEASE!

Specs:
AMD athalon 64 3000+
Gig of DDR400
asus K8N mother board
Geforce FX5500

Thanks in advance!

-Zak

Answer:Bios Loads fine, Windows loads then black screen, boots fine in safe

Disconnect the cathodes and the try to boot. If it works then your power supply isnt putting out enough juice for all the extras.

A week ago a bubble popped up on my desktop offering to clear space because i was running out of memory on my computer. I clicked it (shouldn't have) and it "cleared space" but now my computer won't play any sound. i have Dell speakers and they work fine because i can plug them into my ipod and play that. I already did the Control Panel-Sounds and Audio Devices-Audio tab but once I get to the audio tab this website tells me to click "Advanced" under "sound playback". However, I don't even have the option of clicking that button. it won't let me click it. Also, there is no Volume control icon on the bottom right corner of my screen (next to the clock). like there should be. I really need help

Answer:Speakers not working...has to do with windows actual speakers are fine

Go to control panel - open sound Icon - put a check mark in the box.Place Volume Icon in TaskbarWindows XPSee if your sound has been stopped in Services Under Windows Audio.Start - Control Panel - Open Administrative Tools - Open Component Services - Click Services (Local) and Scrowl down the list to Windows Audio to see if it says - Started. If stoppedLeft click Windows Audio and click restart. - OrRight click Windows Audio - left click Properties - Left click Start If the above doesn't work, go to control panel and open System Icon - Hardware Tab - Device Manager - Click the + Plus sign for Sounds.......... -Right click Realtek AC 97 (Or whatever Sound you have) - Left click - Update Driver. To update you will need the CD that came with your computer If you have the CD that came with your computer you should be able to install your sound drivers.

hey guys
so i finally decided to install win7 x86 - everything went well - put all the standard stuff on there etc - i rebooted many times because of installations and updates
on my last reboot it just got stock in the bios screen (verifying dmi pool data..success! etc)
so i rebooted, same thing, took the disc out, same thing - turned off boot devices same thing
tried to use window's useless repair tools (whatever happened to repair install?) which didn't help - so i decided to format and reinstall - then it says it was unable to do that (partition error or something)

the annoying this is...is that this EXACT..i mean EXACT same thing happened when i installed vista sp1 from scratch - this happened - and to fix it i had to leave my pc open overnight with the hard drive cables all unplugged..in the morning with my fingers crossed i tried the installation again - and it worked.

my d: always disappears (single hard disk sata 233gig (250)) - sometimes it'll vanish from my computer and stuff - but this can't be the problem because the d: is a single drive on its own - my c: is a25gig partition from my e: - so it's completely unrelated.

does it matter how i replug the sata cables (2 of them) into the mother board? - they're both being recognised anyway

this is really annoying though - mostly because there isn't really an explanation - and because this random stuff always happens to my pc! - is it my hard drive because that's the only thing that would half- make sense :-/

now ... Read more

Answer:installs fine, runs fine, reboots..not fine

Did you delete/recreate the partition? If you haven't then do this first and try re-installing Win 7. I wouldn't recommend removing the watermark as that can have unpredictable results.

Answer:<Keyb,oard Issue

Window cleaning solution should not come near any keyboard.

It has probably done irrepairable damage by now, your remaining hope would be to thoroughly wash it in warm water and let it dry thoroughly (days rather than hours) and see if it has removed the corrosive residue.

If not, bin it and buy another.

I searched the forum but didn't find another thread that would prove helpfull.

My keyboard quick-launch buttons don't work due to the lack of proper drivers. Not that I really need them, they're mostly on the way, but having dvd- drive ejects back would be nice.

I'm running 64 bit system, and I can't find drivers that work. I've tried few, most of which I found from hp's support page, but none of them make any difference. It seems to me that there is no drivers for this keyboard made especially for 64 bit win7.

Some time ago I heard that xp drivers should do just fine. They didn't, so was this just a bad quess or is there some trick for this?

Pardon my language, haven't used my english for a while. And thanks, naturally.

I've recently got a d-ling wireless adsl router which I set up last week and has been working like a dream for about 3 days, yesterday the wireless connection dropped and I get "wireless connection unavailavble" with the link light on my PCMCIA card flashing.

Then intermittently I get "One or more wireless networks is available - click here for list of available networks"

When I click I get a window that shows my wirless connection sometimes but not others but it still doesnt connect.

Also my card utility will not start and I get an error message saying "no wireless adapter found" I've rebooted about 300 times and also unistalled and reinstalled the utility and hardware. It took me about 3 weeks and 3 different sets of hardware to get this network running so obviously I'm totally peed off that its not working now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Answer:WLAN working fine - now not working :(

Try altering the router wireless connection channel it could be interference thats causing the problem.
If you go right up to the router do you get a good connection if so try altering the ariels or moving the router?

Okay, so i bought a new pre built machine very recently. ANd I have had it set up for about a week now
Specs
Asus P5KC motherboard
Intel Core 2 Quad Q660 2.4GHZ
2GB Ram Ballistix
1GB Ram HP
Gigabyte 9600 GT 512mb PCI GRphics card
111GB MAXTOR HDD

It came with two hard drives installed, but i took on of them out, to leave me with just one (simpler IMO)!

Anyway, I installed windows XP SP2 with no problems, and since i've had it i've been installing programs, and steam.
I've downloaded a few games with steam, and have been playing through HL2 and more recently Team Fortress 2.

Anyway today, I was chatting with my friend on Windows Live, and then i closed that, and started up Team Fortress 2. However when the program started I could hear all the music that you hear at the menu, but the screen was black!!!

I waited and waited, but nothing happened, so the only thing i could do was reboot. SO i reboot, and the BIOS splash loads up, and then the windows xp boot screen, and then when it should show log in screen, the screen flickers and goes black. And thats it, the hard drive whirrs for a bit, but Theres nothing i can do from there. BLACK SCREEN

I can boot safe mode with and without networking, and I even did a system restore from safe mode, but that didnt work.

I assume it is a video card problem, as it is a game that seems to have caused this problem.

Sorry to burden you with such a long winded story, but I;ve been scouring then internet for days now, and c... Read more

Answer:New Rig Working fine. until.......

Okay, so I think that this is not a graphics card issue, I think it might be a virus. I Unplugged the power cord to my graphics card, In that hope that windows would try to boot up without it. It is amazing that IE even starts (wait, it doesn't).

Please download Ad-aware SE and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Go to this site to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. Also make sure to customize the settings in Adaware for better scan results. Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

Reboot.

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro or RAV Antivirus. Select the Autoclean option if you use TrendMicro.

Reboot and post a new HJT log.

hi guys,

my OWA has been working fine with this url:
https://mail10.company.ie/exchange

now i always had to add an exception when connecting...but it worked
now on friday i get a server not found page.

but when i type https://ipaddress/exchange the certificate screen comes up once but when i say ok it redirects me to an open dns search with the ipaddress in the search field, then if i try again it just takes me to an open dns search.

This is happening inside my lan as well as outside. i can ping the external address so there isnt a connection issue. I feel this is some sort of DNS issue. i have been reading on OWA problems...but its very broad and i feel i am chasing my tail. or looking in the wrong direction. All services are running and i have followed directions to reseting the iis virtual volume etc...

any help muchly appreciated.

I know I posted some what of a rant on how different windows programs are a joke and I felt that MCE was one of them, but I have to now retract that statement as MCE in win 7 seems to work well for my ADS tuner, the only problem I am having with it now is everytime I select a show it records them by default. when I hit stop it takes me back out to the guide.

Is the recording just a temp file and just deletes its self when I hit stop? or is there a section of my drive that has all the files just taking up space?

We currently use one of these in conjunction with a PC and projector for doing presentations.

It has proved very unreliable, and everyone is fed up with seemingly not being able to use both the mouse and keyboard at the same time. Every time it is used it has to be re-taught. It's making us look unprofessional.

Can anyone recommend a good keyboard and mouse combo that works over a range of at least 10m, and that is reliable?

I was thinking perhaps a BlueTooth logitech one But it seems a little pricey.

Any advice would be more than welcome.

Answer:My XP is working fine and I need sound.

OK, so what do you want anyone here to do? You have given us absolutely nothing to go on. You may need to install (or reinstall) the sound drivers. Or you may have the volume turned down or muted. Or the speakers may be turned off. Or they may be plugged into the wrong port.

I have a emachine that was downloading norton updates ( may not be related to the issue ) and then shut down.  Now there is no power.  Changed the power supply and power cord, the led on the mother board comes on but still when hitting the power button I get nothing.  Checked all the connections and they are good.  Im thinking the cmos battery or the motherboard.  Is the cmos even a possiblity or could it be the power button connections wrong.  But Im not sure.

Answer:Working fine and then no power

If you have two RAM sticks, try booting with just one at a time. Try booting without any RAM and also with the hard disk (and any other drives) disconnected. Take the front cover off your PC - this should expose the power button, make sure it is clicking correctly when you switch the PC on. If you have a spare PC, try using your RAM in that to test it. Also try connecting your hard disk as a slave. You have already ruled out a faulty PSU, if you can also rule out faulty RAM and HDD, it will be either the CPU or motherboard that is at fault.

I just recently reinstalled windows xp and now my IE isn't working. It says the web page you requested is not available offline. It also asks Connect or stay offline. Connect brings up to this dial-up thing, but i have high speed. Firefox works fine and everything else works good. Everything except Microsoft Related software that requies internet, such as MSN messanger setup.exe that requires downloads and installing Windows Media player. I tried reinstalled IE, but that also gives me an error message, it says Setup was unable to download information about available installation sites, Setup may have been unable to migrate your current proxy settings. Click Advanced if you know your proxy settings. I ran IEfix, deleted temportary files and cookies, reset IE settings to default. I have this CD that came from my ISP that includes IE 6 and i tried to install it, but all these error messages came up saying i dunt have those files. Oh and im installing version 6 because 7 requires SP2, but it doesn't work for me.
What can i do? is there a full package IE installer that installs IE directly.

Answer:IE not working, firefox is fine

Is IE6 installed? If so Run the System File Checker

Go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:

sfc /scannow ( sfc if not reconized)

This command will immediately initiate the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replacing any files with which it finds a problem. You will need your Windows cd.

I started my computer a while ago. I use Windows XP SP2. I had no problems last night. Whenever I load my account, the music that plays is slow and sounds corrupted. Once my desktop was loaded, I was looking through some CDs. Five minutes later, my monitor went black. Then it showed the blue screen of death. It said 'a problem has been detected with your computer'. A few seconds later, it automatically rebooted. When it got to the blank screen before the Windows loading bar, it wouldn't load. My computer was beeping and I pressed the off button. It turned off immediately. Next, I started it, but it got stuck on one of those black screens with text. I restarted it. This time, after waiting ten minutes on the blank screen before the loading bar, I saw a white bar at the bottom of the screen. Once it filled up, I saw the real loading bar. And I got to the Welcome screen. I was so relived. Then I typed in my password, and hit Enter. It said my profile was corrupted. I hit Okay. It said it would give me a temporary profile, which is what I'm using now. What can I do to fix my computer? I've been using it for six years (although I had to reformat two years ago when Windows Style glitched). :/

The quickest test for this is to first try another mic. If you are quite certain that no settings have been changed then your mic has probably developed a fault.

I have purchased a laptop for my mom... and i have interchanged the ram between the new and my old one (4gb of ram for my mom is too much and i need it lol).
Here the data:
My laptop:
manufacturer recommends : 533mhz or 667mhz DDR2 SDRAM
And it has installed : x2 1GB 2Rx8 PC2-5300S-555-12

the new laptop:
manufacturer recommends : 800 DDR2 SDRAM
And it has installed : x2 2GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400S-666 12-E1

I have switched the memories; i put the x2 2gb of the new laptop in my old one and my x2 1gb in the new laptop.

So the new configuration is as follow:

My laptop

manufacturer recommends : 533mhz or 667mhz DDR2 SDRAM
And it has installed : x2 2GB 2Rx8 PC2-6400S-666 12-E1

the new laptop:
manufacturer recommends : 800 DDR2 SDRAM
And it has installed : x2 1GB 2Rx8 PC2-5300S-555-12
Everything is working fine but i want to know if there is something i should worry about what i did (despite i still dont know how 800mhz are working in my 533-667mhz system and how the new 800mhz laptop is working with 667mhz ram memory since memories are out of the recommended)

Answer:Non compatible ram working fine, why?

I would check CPU-Z or some other program to see if the 800ram is running fast. it should downgrade to 667 since that is the Ram specified in the motherboard.

likewise, the 667 ram in the 800mhz system will only run at 667 unless it is overclocked (which is not recommended on laptops)

I have 2 issues. I had my router system set up and everything worked fine. My modem and router was set up on my pc which runs windows xp sp3. I had my laptop connected to it from another room and I have windows xp sp3 on that as well. Everything worked fine. My modem broke and I had to get a new one from DishNetwork. I re-installed everything and the internet and router are working fine on the pc but it will not connect on my laptop. It shows the router and I select to connect but then it says that no connection is found or I will get a low or no connectivity. That is issue one.
Issue two: I am trying to connect my grandmother to my router next door and she has vista. I can see the router and it shows that I have 5 bars of service and they are green but when you open the internet it doesnt connect.
Can anyone help me?

So I installed a new motherboard and CPU, and from what I heard you had to re-install windows. However, windows XP worked fine. I installed the drivers from the motherboard's CD.

Should I have done different?

I have right now:
Intel core 2 duo 3.0GHz
GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L
4 gigs of corsair ddr2 800 ram

what I had before:
AMD X2 4400
Asus A8N-SLI motherboard
2 gigs of DDR PC3200 ram from adata

Answer:XP is working fine w/ new mobo and cpu??

Might have worked if you never installed the drivers for the old motherboard. Otherwise, doubt it.

System Info;
Mainboard : Gigabyte GA-73PVM-S2
Ram: 4 GB
OS: Windows 7 64bit
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 3850
Sound: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi

Answer:32 bit browsers not working 64 bit fine ???

Presumably you didn't make a full backup image of the computer when everything was freshly installed and fully working?

Perhaps you have left system restore turned on though? That might enable you to go back to a point before these problems struck... certainly worth a try...
