Hi, Trying to boot my T550 from a Linux (Zorin) installation DVD. Can read the DVD in windows explorer. - it looks ok Have disabled Secure Boot and switched fro UEFI to legacy. Used f12 to select the DVD drive to boot but all I get is a black screen with 3 symbols. The 1st looks like a ruler, then =, then a stick figure in a circle. Any ideas? Liz
More repliesI recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I had to buy a new (SSD) HD and had trouble booting from a disc until I enabled Legacy Mode and disabled Secure Boot in BIOS. Boot orders in both UEFI and Legacy are the same, with DVD Rom set to boot first. Also, the settings for IPV4 and IPV6 are set to IPV4 (Legacy) when they were once set to BOTH IPV4 AND 6 and are unable to be changed, if that's important. Now whenever I boot up I always get a "No Boot Device Found" message until I hit "Enter" at which point i'm allowed entry into my precious Win10 laptop. I disabled Legacy in BIOS, but then i get a different "No Boot Device Found" error, and hitting "Enter" doesn't help. Could some kind person tell me how to correct this, and possibly why it happened and the differences in each option? I'll settle for how to correct this, though, with much gratitude. MUCH gratitude. More repliesHi, Shutdown the notebook. Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Bios Menu ( f10 ). Under the System Configuration tab, expand the Boot Options Menu. Here you should find the option to set Secure Boot to Disabled and Legacy Devices to Enabled. When done, press f10 and select to save the changes. You may then have to enter a 4 digit pin displayed on the screen to confirm the setting changes ( note that you will not see a display of the numbers as you enter tham ) - enter the code and hit enter. 1 more repliesHello Lenovo Forum! This is driving me mad. I bought a SATA-to-USB3 Adapter to connect my SSD and HDD from my old computer and boot from them (I want to use the Linux on it). Yet I can't figure out how to do that. Secure Boot is off, Legacy Boot is on and yet - everytime I choose the drive in the boot menu, the screen goes black, there is a short drive access, and then I'm back at the boot device menu. I don't really know what to try now. Reimaging like most other threads here suggest doesn't help in that case because it's not a simple installation medium. What I tried aswell: Attaching the Adapter via a USB2-hub to check if there might be an issue with USB3 support. When plugged into my friends X230, both drives boot up perfectly fine and he can use them just fine. More repliesHello, I am having an issue with downgrading to Windows 7 and It's not nearly as easy as normally installing an OS. I get to the expanding files screen, and once the system reboots it goes back to the Windows 7 install screen. This is an issue, because it should continue with the installation. Does anybody know why this would occur or how to fix it? I'm sure there's likely something I missed. This is rather urgent, so any help would be appreciated.
Hi there
At the reboot have you removed the installation media -- it might be re-booting again from the install media.

I have a Thinkpad T430u and I am unable to get a bootable USB flash drive to boot. I have made the bootable drive in PowerISO, I have used Window's tool, and I have also tried the following (suggested on these forums): "Create another flash drive with a single FAT32 partition using DISKPART in a command windows: list disk, select disk, clean, create partition primary, format fs=fat32 quick, assign. " But that didn't work either. Nothing I have done has allowed me to boot to the USB flash drive. The flash drive isn't the problem, because I can boot to it on my other computers. I have turned UEFI/legacy boot to both, as well as to Legacy only, and that doesn't help. I have turned off secure boot, and that didn't help either. I have searched a lot and tried everything out there.. but nothing works. I even bought a USB DVD drive to test and see if I could boot to a burned DVD and that didn't work either. I am able to reach the BIOS settings as well as the boot device menu, but the only options available are ATA HDD and PIC Lan boot.. the flash drive never shows up as an option. I have moved USB HDD and USB FDD to the top of the boot order in bios but that doesn't help either. Any suggestions? BTW I have tried Windows 7 and 8 ISOs, as well as a Linux distrubtion and various bootable partition utilities.. I even tried Lenovo's own UEFI diagnostic created with Lenovo's bootable USB generator.. nothing will boot.
Had the same issue. Tried on another T430u, and did the same. Defaulted Bios and checked that secure boot was desabled. It booted from the USB drive straight away.

Just bought a Dell Optiplex 7010 Mini-Tower with Win 8 Pro 64-bit, 8 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive and an Intel i5 3470 processor. Right now, it has Dell BIOS version A16.
It is normally in UEFI ON and Secure Boot ON, so that F12 on bootup (one-time boot options) does NOT normally show the CD-DVD as a boot option. OK - no problem.
However, if I reboot with F12 and select both UEFI OFF (meaning Legacy ON) and Secure Boot OFF and reboot, then F12 DOES show me the CD-DVD as a boot option, but if I actually try to boot up from a bootable CD, I get an error message.
I have practiced with two bootable CDs - a Knoppix and an Aomei Backupper, both made on earlier machines. Both these CDs work as boot-up CDs in my old XP machine, and the Aomei Backupper CD also worked in someone else's Win 7 Pro 64-bit machine.
What's wrong?
Again, please let me repeat that I am trying to boot from the CD-DVD AFTER I have turned OFF UEFI, turned ON Legacy and turned OFF Secure Boot.
Thanks.

rdubayah,
If your computer was running WIndows 10 without any issues prior to downloading the Anniversary update, then you would not have had to change any settings in the bios to install the update. The UEFI and Secure Boot settings are to enable booting with a USB or DVD to install Windows.
Disable Legacy Boot Mode and Enable UEFI
Start the computer and TAP the F2 key to enter the bios. Once in the bios Press F9 to Restore the bios to the Default Settings. F10 to save changes and exit. You could have a hardware problem. To run a hardare diagnostics on the computer you would start the computer and TAP the F5 key. Insert a cd/dvd in the optical drive for running the diags.

I am trying to install Windows 7 from a DVD to an HP 19-2113w All-in-One with Windows 8.1 as the factory install. I have entered the BIOS, turned off Secure Boot, restarted, and entered the code to confirm that I want to disable Secure Boot. Upon restarting and going back into the BIOS, Secure Boot shows it is "Disabled." HOWEVER -- when I then go into the boot options and try to enable the legacy boot devices, it gives me a message saying "You must disable Secure Boot before you may configure this option." As I previously stated -- Secure Boot shows "Disabled" when I check under the security tab. How much more disabled can it get? Am I missing something here? Is there any other way to install Windows 7 from a DVD onto this computer?

@Siemen,Did you system originally have WIN 7, as listed here? If so, the BIOS is correct at rev 7. You can not use the newer UEFI graphic cards because there is NO update BIOS available. Your correct, you do not have a way to disable secure boot and enable legacy. In another post you asked, and got no answer.Yes, the GTX 660 will work, with an adequate new PSU. Recommend EVGA GTX 600 and Corsair CX600 PSU. On the GTX 750Ti inquiry, only chance would be the Hybrid vBIOS cards. PSW<> The GTX 670's are a tad touchy.

Hey all I have a Touchsmart 15-d087ca. I was going through the steps to fix my phone (which is currently stuck in fastboot mode), and one of them was to disable secure boot. So I selected the disable secure boot option, but didn't enable legacy boot, which may have been an incredibly stupid thing to do. I'm not sure if this is the cause of the problem, but it seems likely. I have to admit I'm not an expert when it comes to computers. Upon pressing f10 to save changes and restart, the computer turned off, and then turned back on. But now the screen is black - the backlight is on and the machine is running, but there's nothing I can do to get away from the black screen. Obviously this kinda sucks, because now my phone and laptop are both stuck somewhere in the boot process. Am I screwed, or is there a way to fix this issue? EDIT: I have tried a hard reset, the emergency BIOS access thing where I hold windows + B + Power On, and will try taking the memory out and putting it pack in tomorrow. I'm using this instructional video to guide me

More repliesHello,
I tried to solve an installation problem for a friend of mine by GPT and as I tried to complete the installation, I most probably made a mistake in trying to turn UEFI boot on. I invalidated the legacy boot option and now the system does not start at all, no Dell logo nor anything else. I tried to boot on several installation DVDs with no results.
Is there a way to reset the settings I made in the BIOS ?
Is there any other solutions to boot ? Is possible that, I am able to find one, an UEFI iso image could be used to start from the DVD and go on with the installation ?
I think the BIOS version was A11 but I am not 100% sure. Anyway, I am pretty sure I did not try to boot aother BIOS.
Is anyone can help me ;-)
Glad that solved the problem.

Is there currently any way to configure a custom boot logo for UEFI booting? I can only find methods for Legacy users, but no luck with UEFI.
I'm kind of new to custom boot logos, so if anybody could give me some information as to if it's possible first?

You can change the boot logo in UEFI mode by modifying the relevant ACPI table (BGRT) with an EFI application before booting. AFAIK, the only application for this is currently my own, HackBGRT. (Open-source and all, so I certainly hope this doesn't count as advertising.) Be sure to tell if you find any other choices.

More repliesHello, first post here...
First, some context: I have a Dell Inspiron 15R SE that came with Windows 8.
I've managed to get a working dual-boot system with Ubuntu 12.10. I can't remember exactly how I done that, but I remember that I had to disable secure boot. I think that the boot configuration those days was:
Secure boot: DisabledLoad legacy option rom: EnabledBoot list option: Legacy
This "configuration" worked perfectly for 6-7 months.
Then, one day (last week, can't remember the exact day), when I was using Windows 8 the computer crashed. I hard-rebooted and got this screen:
I've searched a lot, looking for solutions and after executed boot-repair from a Ubuntu LiveCD dozens of times I've decided to eliminate Ubuntu temporarily and focus to get a system with Windows 8 working nice.
Then I used my recovery DVDs to recover the system. Yup, Windows has booted. But when I restarted first time I got the same error. Then I, digging a solution, pressed F12 after a reboot and got here:
The highlighted option allows me to boot into Windows 8. So I went to boot options (F2) and changed the following configuration:
Load legacy option rom: DisabledBoot list option: UEFI
Now I can boot directly to Windows without need to press F12.
But my objective isn't complete. I want to erase all Ubuntu entries from the seconds image and restore the legacy boot from the first imagem (because they worked before).

I read the document below and it says Secure Boot is enabled by default. I wasn't having those problems until I flashed this latest firmware. Now I've got them too. Shortly after I flashed the firmware, I noticed that ACER/pokki updated some stuff. So I'm not sure if the new UEFI or pokki caused the problem.....or if it's pure coincidence. I see where people are talking about Microsoft updates being the problem. I had those updates and didn't have the problem. The onset of the problem occured with either the new UEFI firmware or ACER/pokki START update. Has anyone confirmed from Microsoft that there is a problem on their end? The only computers that I'm reading about having all these recent problems are ACER computers. Can anyone point me to a any forum link that shows non-ACER computers having this same mouse,audio/video problem?

1 more repliesHi all,
Here is my current situation:
Got a new HP desktop (Windows 10 Pro) with RX 580 GPU. Disabled Secure Boot in BIOS since I wanted to avoid potential issues from flashing custom GPU bios, then flashed the custom BIOS (nothing fancy, just modified some timings which worked for me in the past with another RX 580).
After rebooting it will not post and it gives 3 short beeps and 3 long beeps, which according to HP signifies that "the embedded controller has timed out waiting for BIOS to return from graphics initialization."
I tried pulling the GPU and plugging into integrated graphics via HDMI but got the same result. It could be that the integrated graphics are disabled (the ports were covered) but I can't seem to get into BIOS to check.
I tried swapping in a different GPU (not 100% it's working since I have no other PC to test with currently, but I have no reason to believe it's dead). Same result.
Tried removing and re-inserting the CMOS battery, then booted up with no GPU, then with RX 580, and then with other GPU. Same result each time.
Any suggestions as to what I should try next? I'm pretty stumped...
Do you have a VGA cable that you can connect to monitor to at least get you in the bios to change to your video settings?
How do I disable this setting in the Bios? Do I have to turn in off in Windows 8 first? I have the option but I can not arrow to it and turn it off or on. Only way to disable it is by brute force and turn off UEFI boot option and set it as Legacy.I am obviously missing something.

Microsoft has been attempting to patch a serious Secure Boot vulnerability that can be exploited to bypass the security feature and install rootkits and bootkits on Windows devices. Researchers believe the security flaw cannot be fully patched.
-
On systems where Secure Boot is locked down and cannot be disabled (e.g. Windows RT, HoloLens, Windows Phone), configuration changes can be made using policies, signed files loaded by the boot manager (bootmgr) from a UEFI variable. There are some boot loader executables (EFI files) signed by Microsoft that can be used to provision such policies.
Before loading a policy, bootmgr checks it to make sure it?s valid. However, researchers discovered that Microsoft introduced a new type of Secure Boot policy during the development of Windows 10 Anniversary Update (v1607) that can be abused to bypass the security feature.

After installing an HP BIOS update about a week ago I can't boot the way I've been booting the laptop. HP offered through the support assistnt application a BIOS update. After installing that update, when I boot I am taken to a blue screen that appears to be from the BIOS firmware in the laptop telling me it can't find a certain file needed to boot. It always has booted without issue before that update. I rolled back the BIOS update and it still did not boot, so I have switched to using legacy support in BIOS with the hard drive the first boot option instead of using the HP Boot Manager option. It works fine with this arrangement but I thought I'd post this here to let others know that updating their BIOS may lead to a similar issue, and also wondered if anyone has addressed this issue on their laptop. Thanks!!!Donald

6 more repliesI have an Acer Aspire M5481T with a SSD 20Gb + 500Gb HD. When I bought it, I made it dual boot resizing it partition inside Windows and then installing Ubuntu. Ok, worked fine for last months. Now, after getting some bloatware that turned my dev tools broken, I needed to make a clean Windows installation. After playing around with its SSD, I opted to use the factory restore of the system. It gave me a "clean" Windows installation but, as expected, I lost grub as the boot manager. Trying to restore it, I changed the boot mode do Legacy instead of EFI. But now, I am not able to enter BIOS again, and I don't know which is the current boot order, as it only gets "frozen" in the Acer logo with options to enter Set-up with F2 or Boot Order with F12 (but no one of this options works). I tried to start with a Windows 8 installation disk, an Ubuntu installation disk or even a bootable USB (with Windows 8 and Ubuntu), but none of this options seems to be working. Anyone knows something I can try before attempting to send it to repair? Maybe a way to reflash or reset BIOS?
Try pressing and holding the Fn key, then the Function key (ie F2 or F12).
2 more repliesBest I can tell the documentation HP publishing specifying the method required to disable Secure Boot on an Envy 700-074 was written by someone(s) who had no experience in implementing the methods they list. IT DOES NOT WORK! The ONLY way this machine will boot to the harddrive or to a bootable CD/DVD is if SECURE BOOT IS ENABLED. I have spent literally days trying to get it to work. Formatted harddrive as MBR not uefi, gone through the truly bizarre methods required to get the computer register in bios that I wanted the DVD drive as the first option, F10 and Escaped innumerable times. Bottom line, whoever designed and implemented the bios on the Envy 700-074 MUST be kept away from future involvement on bios implementation!
More repliesAs I get ready to do a clean install of 10074 I am curious about the need to disable secure boot and fast boot options. If I do disable secure boot do I need to enable legacy boot?
I have had limited success with previous installs to a 2nd hard drive and the problems that arose always seem related to dual booting.
In one instance I did a clean install of 10061 and had left secure boot enabled. In order to get dual boot working I had to disable secure boot, and upon rebooting I needed to change it back to secure. I then made Win 8.1 the default boot and then Win 10 would never boot from the menu, it would just take me back to the boot menu and I could boot into Win 8.1.
Additionally I would like to thank all the members who freely share their time and knowledge on the forums. Such a valuable resource!

Yes, disable 'Secure Boot' & 'Fast Boot' than change from UEFI to Legacy
Hi.My BIOS update is: F.43 Rev.AI have an issue related with the boot menu screen resolution: 1. When secure boot is enabled it presents this screen resolution: 2. When secure boot is disabled it presents this screen resolution: Why does this happen and How do you fix it? Note: I have used the BCDEDIT command with parameters as GRAFICRESOLUTION but it's same behavior within BIOS secure boot! I hope your reply.Thanks.
More repliesOk im about to upgrade to win 10 then do a clean install afterwards of win 10, but i wanted to assure i have everything correct before i start. I updated again my profile with Belarc to assure i have a completed list of my software, i notice this Boot mode uefi with secure boot disable, here im a rookie. I have an Alienware Aurora R4 desktop, do i have to go into bios and change secure boot to enable? I read lots of articles but cant simplify with my dumb brain what to do at this stage, appreciate any help.

Hello all, This is my problem: My BIOS won't boot my USB drive while in Secure Boot mode (Legacy Support disabled). After researching this, I realized UEFI Secure Boot won't read NTFS formatted flash drives hence requiring user to reformat to FAT32. I've reformatted to FAT32 but it still won't boot. I continue to run into the 'Boot Device Not Found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk.' screen. The only way to get the USB drive to boot is to disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Support. Virtually every forum I have researched pointed to this being the problem (aside from loose hard drives / hard drive and/or memory problems). I have checked the hard drive and have ran the F2 System Diagnostics and am sure there is no problem with the HDD. I have even tested the RAM/CPU with Memtest86 with 0 errors. I have ran multiple 'sfc /scannow' tests after each fresh Windows install and there are no corrupt files during installation. I have been trying to install a fresh Windows 8.1 with Bing (32 bit) on a system that originally came with 64 (there were no 64 bit ISOs available anywhere to download and since Microsoft conveniently doesn't make this specific Windows version available for download via their Media Creation Tool (or anywhere else on their or their affiliate sites for that matter), I was forced to resort to a 3rd party site to obtain this download. The problem is I am forced to install using Legacy Support as there appears to be no o... Read more

Hello all,
This is my problem:
I can't get my USB drive to load while in Secure Boot mode and continue running into 'Boot Device Not Found. Please install an operating system on your hard disk' screen. The only method that works thus far is disabling Secure Boot mode and enabling Legacy
Support. Here are the methods I have tried based on extensive research of various forums after several days:
- Performed all the generic System Diagnostic tests (F2) + Memtest86 + sfc /scannow multiple times after every fresh install + physically checked HDD. Performed all HP recommendations: http://support.hp(DOT)com/us-en/document/c01443463
- Did multiple fresh installs of Windows 8.1 with Bing (32 bit) erasing all partitions from hard drive every time (my system is designed for 64 but I only have access to a 32 ISO). Installed using Legacy Support (I understand you can't go back and enable Secure
Boot and disable Legacy once it has been installed this way but due to lack of any other way of installing Windows, I have no choice).
- Used 'Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool' to create ISO which automatically formats drive to NTFS; converted to FAT32 using 'AOEMI Partition Assistant' software (preserving all partitions/data) but it still won't read.
- Used 'Rufus v. 2.11.995' software to create ISO as FAT32 under several different setting iterations:

It gave me a black screen with the following words"reboot and select boot device or insert boot device and push a key"But the weird thing is I set the boot priority to Hard Disc already. But it cannot boot from hard disc. What is tricky is that the original 1st boot device is not hard disc but something called "boot device manager". I think something about this "boot device manage" is causing problem. So what can I do is i want to enable CMS?
you need to enable CSM only if you want to install legacy OS that not support UEFI boot. windows boot manager is the manager that will boot your windows 8-8.1 OS, so if you set HDD ubstead if windows boot manager you can have boot problem.

Hi all, I've been a long-time reader of this forum, but this is my first message. I bought last year a T420 from eBay and promptly installed Ubuntu on the HDD. Last week I bought a Samsung mSATA SSD to reinstall Ubuntu on it and use the HDD as data disk. I took the opportunity to test UEFI and enabled UEFI in the BIOS. The installation was successful but when I plugged it to the dock station I lost the USB connectivity (no USB keyboard or wireless mouse), so I decided to revert UEFI to "legacy" and reinstall it. To my surprise, once I reverted to "legacy" boot I lost the ability to boot from any of the possibilities: the original HDD or even the Ubuntu DVD install media. I've played with all the BIOS options, going back to UEFI boot, and it doesn't even detect now my installation on the SSD I went yesterday to an official Lenovo shop and they told me it was a software issue and that reverting back to BIOS should be enough, so I downloaded the "BIOS Update Bootable CD" from: http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/migr-77076 but it doesn't boot either, so I'm really stuck and any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.Pablo
More repliesHi - I'm having a problem with booting and getting a black/blank LCD screen with an external montior connected via the displayport on Windows 10. I've tried the option of disabling fastboot in the power settings but this only relieves the problem during a restart rather than from a cold boot. The graphics mode is set to 'discrete' rather than 'hybrid' (which seemed resolve the issue for those using a dock). If I hibentate then resume the LCD screen displays.. Anyone experiencing the same problems or have a solution ? Many thanks

Duel booth them in the following manner. The main OS will be on an SSD. The trial (Win 10) will be on a second HD (not SSD.)
In addition, I want to use a third HD for data and do this on a clean install.
I know how to move the user folder by doing a single clean install but I am not sure I can have two Win OSs on two different drives using the same third HD to place the user folder.
My plan is to keep the OSs totally separate and using the bios to select the drives.
1) Can this be done?
2) Is it best for me to DISABLE SECURE BOOT IF I DO THIS?
Secure boot is a pain. might as well disable it.

A Legacy Boot will not work on an OS that is UEFI Installed.
Reason why when you run a recovery CD you will have to select Legacy to detect the REcovery CD but after Installation you will have to select UEFI again for it to work.
Can you share what is your purpose on a legacy boot? Maybe we can help

More repliesI have a Win XP desktop which had problems with the hdd. The hdd and disk drive were connected to the same IDE bus(the motherboard only has one), the disk set as slave, the hdd as master. The computer worked fine except for errors with the hdd. I purchased a new hdd, and copied all contents of the old hard disk over using acronis migrate easy. In order to do this, I had to disconnect the disk drive, and connect the new hard drive in its place. The cloning process went smoothly and when I disconnected the old hard drive, I was able to boot into the new one. Hey guys,
just reformatted my PC with Windows XP x64 bit edition,
After putting in my Mobo CD and installing the necessary drivers,
I restarted and got this message:
Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
I looked around the internet for a bit, and most said to change the boot sequence in the BIOS to the primary drive,
it was already set to the primary drive, so I disabled the 2nd and 3rd boot choices.
But low and behold, I still got the message.
Although, a couple times, I was able to get to Windows.
Then when I restart, I get the message again.
So I'm not really sure what to do.
Thanks to anyone who would like to help.
First...system manufacturer and model?
Just guessing...but I would disconnect the hard drive and reconnect it...then see if the BIOS properly recognizes the hard drive. If it does, then I would try to boot.
I would also enable all boot options in the BIOS...and try to boot from an option other than the hard drive, if you have a bootable XP CD, bootable USB, etc. Save all changes made by hitting F10.
If the system can boot from an alternate option but not from the HD...it's probably a hard drive situation.
If the BIOS doesn't cannot retain the changed settings or you start getting other hardware errors...my guess would be CMOS battery needs replacement.

Hey guys,
Thanks ahead of time for the help. I can honestly say I'm dumbfounded with this issue and would rather ask for help then hook up my master HD as a slave and force a reformat which would be my next step.
Anyways, here's the background on the issue.
Rig:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ OC'd to 2.75ghz
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe Mobo
BFG Tech Nvidia 7800 GTOC x2 (SLI)
Dual Sata Hd's, both the 3gb/s connection. (750gb main/250gb Backup)
Sound Blaster XFI Fatal1ty sound card
Creative modem blaster v.92 dialup modem ( @ dialup)
A few days ago, not quite sure why, but when I booted the comp the graphics card proceeded to tweak out and basically looked like fuzz upon entering windows. Eventually after hard resetting it a few times it'd boot normal. Today, I was running Nvidia NTune utility to find a stable OC setup for my PCI bus and what not, and it rebooted as normal during the process. Graphics card tweaked again, so I did what I know to do and uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers for my 7800's. Seemingly fixed the problem. Rebooted and resumed the OC process and went to watch TV.
45 Minutes later I come back and my computer is rebooting itself constantly. Upon getting the the xp loading screen, it BSoD's and reboots.
So, I try and boot in safemode to uninstall/reinstall drivers yet again. When I press safemode, it begins loading basic drivers. When it gets to SPTD.sys it pauses, locks up, and reboots (no BSoD)
Next step, repair through XP installer di... Read more
Update:
Well, a friend needed me to fix a design for him emergency status in Illustrator CS3, so I went to work troubleshooting.
All signs point to NTFS.sys being corrupt, etc. Which makes the drive unreadable, hence the reboots.
So, I snagged my dads IDE harddrive from his computer, hooked it up as master in my computer and it still gave me the BSoD. I then unhooked both of my Sata Hd's, and ran ONLY the IDE drive. This IDE drive is fine (i'm on it right now on my dads comp to write this). I try and boot my system off just his harddrive and it STILL gave me the BSoD.
Only difference is the BSoD is staying up now on normal boot so I can give you the error.
Error code is 0x0000007B? I believe.
But yeah, the computer is still unable to boot off a good HD even with the bad ones not hooked up.
Now I'm thinking a memory issue? or Video ram issue? Fried GPU/RAM?
AHHHHHH!!!!! i have no idea what to do. This is ridiculous. meanwhile my friend is screwed on his design for a t-shirt i told him i'd do.
Hello,
I have dual boot in my laptop with Ubuntnu 14.04 LTS and Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. Today after working on Ubuntu I restarted and switched to Windows and as soon as it logged in I noticed the battery was 0%. I thought maybe it was some kind of glitch or something (silly me!) so I just pulled the power supply and the laptop abruptly turned off. My laptop battery is completely dead now...won't charge at all and after that incident when I tried to log back into Windows it showed this error:
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware of software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1.Insert your Windows installation disc and restart the computer.
2.Choose your language settings, and then click "Next".
3.Click "Repair your computer."
If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible.
I don't have an installation disc, I tried pressing F8 and none of the options there helped. Ubuntu still works totally fine though. So I'm guessing it is not some hard drive crash and my data are fine in Windows but I just can't boot into it! Please Help!!
Are you using GRUB2 as bootmanager and is windows one of the options? Or do you start ubuntu from the win7 boot menu?

The first thing you are going to need to do is to purchase and install a hdd.
Newegg has a Western Digital 1TB hdd for $69.99 plus tax and shipping.
You will then need to install Windows Home Premium 64-bit. You can download a ISO image of your operating system here.
You will need to burn the ISO image to a DVD to create a bootable installation disc.
How to burn ISO image using Windows Burn Disk Image.
Notice: This applies only to Windows 7 and Windows 8, earlier versions do not have this.
1. Place a blank CD or DVD in the tray of your optical drive and close the tray.
2. After you have downloaded the ISO image you want to burn right click on the Start orb, then choose Windows Explorer.
3. When Explorer opens click on Downloads in the left pane. Scroll down till you find the ISO file you want and double click on it. Click on Burn Disk Image.
4. In the image below you will see Disk burner:, this should be set to the optical drive you want to use. Click on Verify disc after burning if you want to Windows to verity the disc image after burn. Click on burn.

1 more replieshow to enable legacy boot on HP Pavilion m6 1045dx Entertainment
More repliesI have two Dell Inspiron 3250 that are a month old. They are both set to legacy boot and I can boot Win7, Win10, MSDART, etc without issue. I just ordered an identical system and setup the BIOS/UEFI exactly the same as the other systems. The new box crashes when I try to legacy boot anything including the Win 10 install DVD and bootable MSDART thumb drive and even the hard drive from one of the working systems (all work perfectly on the other 2 systems). I can boot/install under UEFI boot, but I want to use legacy. The only difference between the new system and the 2 old is the BIOS version (old is 2.4.2, new is 3.3.6)
I tried to downgrade the BIOS with the Windows utility and also a DOS bootable utility. Both methods report that the BIOS is locked.
I talked to Dell tech support and they informed me that the BIOS cant be upgrades/downgraded on that system which makes no sense to me. He also said that 3.3.6 doesnt support legace boot, which also makes no sense and legacy boot is clearly still an option that can be chosen
I also tried the RAM from one of the other computers just to be sure it wasn't an issue.
The BSOD I get when booting Win10 install DVD, or with the Working Win10 install from the other computer is PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
Can anyone shed some light on what is happening here with legacy boot, and why I cant up/down grade BIOS.
Thanks
Check the motherboard in the new system. I suspect it has an upgraded motherboard and if it does, many new motherboards will not support anything other than Win 10. I have a new ASUS Z170 chipset motherboard (I just built a new system) and it ONLY supports Win 10. I had looked at an ASRock Z170 motherboard and it came with a special disc that would allow it to be Win 7/8.1 compatible.
The Dell Community (forum) would be a good place to post your question. Many user Dell experts there that help.

Just enable Legacy Support and disable Secure Boot. If disabling Secure Boot gives you access to Clear All Secure Boot Keys, you may need to do that too.

The only difference between the new system and the 2 old is the BIOS version (old is 2.4.2, new is 3.3.6)I tried to downgrade the BIOS with the Windows utility and also a DOS bootable utility. Both methods report that the BIOS is locked.I talked to Dell tech support and they informed me that the BIOS cant be upgrades/downgraded on that system which makes no sense to me. He also said that 3.3.6 doesnt support legace boot, which also makes no sense and legacy boot is clearly still an option that can be chosenI also tried the RAM from one of the other computers just to be sure it wasn't an issue. The BSOD I get when booting Win10 install DVD, or with the Working Win10 install from the other computer is PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREACan anyone shed some light on what is happening here with legacy boot, and why I cant up/down grade BIOS.Thanks
More repliesHi, i've tried everything, but there's no way to boot to EFI boot order from a Wake on LAN.It only boots to legacy boot order.Do you have any ideas? When using Intel Management Engine to wake up, all is OK. Thanks!
Product number: N0X16AAR#ABAProduct name: 860-160seWindows 10 boot options do not show the usb stick that is plugged into a rear or top port. USB is bootable operating system can see the usb stick ok another computer will boot from the usb stick why does the computer not show the usb stick and allow me to boot?
Hi: The only suggestion I can offer is to make sure the USB flash drive is plugged into a USB 2 port. It won't boot from a USB3 port.
1 more repliesI managed to mess up my Windows 8.1 factory install almost as soon as I unboxed my Y50-70 with a couple of boneheaded moves. I was able to restore Windows from a downloaded USB image from Microsoft and the BIOS Windows key on the laptop. So far so good. The boot is on /dev/dsa1 as fat32. I have a suspicion that the system when installed was in a different location from the factory. The reason for my suspicion is the following. When trying to install Ubuntu 14.04 as a dual boot, Ubuntu cannot see the Windows OS. I have tried shrinking the Windows partition using the windows partition utility. I have also changed the unallocated space from shrinking to ext4 using GParted. Do I need to change the Windows boot location or change the BIOS boot type to get Ubuntu to see it should install alonside Windows?
More repliesComputer: Dell Inspiron 1525, 320 GB HD with about 2 GB of free space left, 4 MB memory, running Vista Home Premium 32-Bit, SP1, updates current. Just lately, booting from off, Windows will not load, but instead gives me a \Boot\BCD error (0xc00000f)--an error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data. I have repaired this error with my Dell-supplied OS disc repeatedly, and each time I turn off the computer it has the same error at startup. I have read that I may have to rebuild the BCD, but I don't know how to do that. Before I check with Dell, who I suspect will just tell me to reload Windows, I need to know how approach fixing my boot configuration data. The computer has had no new software installations, just routine Windows and Trend Micro Internet Security updates, I checked the disc for errors, and a few files were missing or incorrect, and defragmentation has also been performed routinely. Dell PC checkup finds no issues. How should I proceed?
Try this hard drive diagnostic procedure: http://usasma.vox.com/library/post/b...agnostics.html
Repeated errors on a hard drive usually indicate an impending failure. I'd backup your stuff as soon as possible.
After disabling Secure Boot and restarting my P50, I do not have the option to select a Legacy boot in the BIOS Startup tab. The UEFI/Legacy Boot option is disabled and shows UEFI Only. Any help is truly appreciated. Thanks.
I've been wondering if it's possible to use the legacy (Windows 7 and earlier) BIOS instead of UEFI in Windows 8.1. In my BIOS settings, there is an option to enable the legacy boot mode, but Windows won't boot whenever this is enabled (I get the message 'Operating System not found' instead). Is there any way to enable this?
NOTE: I am not talking about secure boot; I already have that disabled.
Thanks in advance.
Also, I'm using a Dell Inspiron 15 laptop in case that matters.
6 more repliesHello! I have a problem with my new Acer V 15. I want to boot from a USB pen and for that i realized that i need to turn off the UEFI boot mode and start legacy mode, after that i was unable to boot with my hard drive, it shows an error with patents and more random stuff. Any clues what i need to do? I want to install some linux distributions that want to test. Thanks
UEFI is needed on your actual windows 10 installation. most of Linux distribution can boot on UEFI settings too, you just need to "burn" the .iso file using Rufus, setting EFI/UEFI only as partition scheme and format FAT32.
3 more repliesMy E220 cannot boot in legacy mode on disk with GPT Partition or Hybrid MBR+GPT Seems Phoneix Securecore Tiano BIOS refuse to boot in Legacy mode if GPT partition found even BIOS was set to only boot in Legacy mode. Is there any way to force BIOS boot using MBR bootsector in GPT disk ?
How do I create a hybrid MBR+GPT disk like that?

Hi there, Miserablerbro -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.
This may be cause by a wrong Boot Order or the HDD technically cannot be detected by your computer causing it to boot to other media.
Can you first try doing a Power Drain:
Remove the AC Adapter from your Computer if the battery can be removed, Remove it as well.
Hold the Power Button down for 15 sec.
Reconnect Everything, Turn on the Computer and start hitting F2 or Fn + F2
This will boot the system to BIOS
If you cannot find the HDD in there, try re-seating the HDD
Update us how it goes.

Hello! Is there a way of enabling legacy boot mode in HP ProBook 470 G4? The options in the UEFI allow only for changing SecureBoot from enabled to disabled. What I need is to boot from a USB key with Linux or from a DVD with Windows 7. Thanks for your help. Amos
