No more updates for Windows 10 version 1507 (End of Life)

Question: No more updates for Windows 10 version 1507 (End of Life)

Microsoft: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet

Microsoft?s support for Windows 10 (version 1507) ends today. This is the original version of Windows 10, released publicly in July 2015.

The end of support affects Home, Education, Pro, and Enterprise editions. Most Windows 10 users are no longer using this version, so this is just a reminder for stragglers to update.

Preferred Solution: No more updates for Windows 10 version 1507 (End of Life)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

why am i not getting security updates anymore - what can i do?

Answer:No longer receiving security updates on Windows 10 version 1507

Go to Programs and Features > left side, click View Installed Updates > wait for loading > scroll all the way down to Microsoft Windows.
What do you have on the list ?
Check the date of each entry.
It is possible that's all you should have.
Bear in mind there are NOT many security updates for each build.

End of servicing for Windows 10, version 1507

With the availability of Windows 10, version 1607 to the VLSC on January 26th, the 60-day grace period for Windows 10, version 1507 will begin. That means, after March 26th, 2017, Windows 10, version 1507 will no longer be serviced as only the two most Current Branch for Business (CBB) versions are actively serviced.

I think this means that updates will stop for the original Windows 10 RTM version 10240, at least for business users? Presumably this will apply to consumers as well?

I know that consumer machines should have automatically upgraded themselves beyond this version already, but this doesn't always work.

For instance I have a device with a small disk (supposedly 32GB, in practice nearer 30GB) which doesn't have enough disk space to upgrade itself automatically without me manually intervening. Mine is on 1511 but I assume there will be other similar devices which are stuck on 10240.

Will such devices stop updating after 26 March? Or have I misunderstood?

Answer:No more updates to original Win 10 version 1507/10240 after 26 March?

I do believe that any system (Business or Consumer) will cease to see any updates including security fixes, etc. And yes if your device is still on 10240, no more fixes or updates.

If you're still using this original version of Windows 10, Microsoft will stop updating and supporting it on May 9th.

Because Microsoft wants to focus on updating and supporting no more than 2 versions and builds at one time, I'm guessing version 1511 build 10586 will be next on the chopping block.

Greetings. I have a laptop Lenovo G50-30 with preinstalled windows 8.1. My Windows store does not work, writes that the store does not support this version of Windows and recommends upgrading to a new one. My laptop supports upgrading to windows 10 1507. I'd better upgrade to the latest Windows 10 1703 or install Windows 10 1507. The second does not seem to be supported anymore.

Because of regular BSODs decided to install from scratch another Windows 7 version on another HDD. Now I get a start menu with the two versions. Can I just format the partition on the other HDD to get rid of it ?Have been updating the new windows 7 version but found that many updates FAILED. What is there to be done to get them properly installed ?

Answer:double version windows 7 and failed updates

You say you have two installations of win-7; one on the original HD and the other on a second HD. Presumably (a) this is desktop system; (b) the second drive is slave to the first (if using the olde style Master-Slave arrangement; if using Cable Select? then much effect the same overall?)?Presuming the olde HD is that actual boot HD - and as you say it has the mbr on it?Can you clearly identify which version (as in which partition on which drive) you are booting to now; and which one is the original installation? And which one are you considering reformatting (just to be clear here)? If you reformat the original HD and it is the one that boots up (has the mbr etc.) then yes; if you reformat it you will lose the mbr and all the other start-up/boot-files for the OS remaining on the second drive. And thus no OS to boot? You would have to run a repair routine to re-establish the mbr etc...If you have the second installation already working (well??) on the second drive as a "slave" to the olde drive, you "could" simply set it as default OS to boot. Check it does so OK. Then delete (via windows explorer) the entire windows folder etc. for the original installation. But do NOT delete the start-up files etc. on the olde drive? check the second installation is still OK when booted up again; and if so - empty the recycle-bin; defrag the olde drive? Then use as data storage?Or you can simply try the full repair installation routine on the original/olde drive. In effect you ... Read more

Over the past year Microsoft has already talked about how it's moving away from big releases for Windows in favor of smaller incremental updates that continually evolve the operating system. And with Windows 10 around the corner, the company is...

Answer:Microsoft says no new version coming after Windows 10, only incremental updates

Music to my ears! I still don't want to move forward away from Windows 7. But I will seeing as Windows 10 is a free update, and going to stick around for a longer time span.

This changing OS version every 2 years is for the dogs, or whatever else has a short lifespan.

As far as security updates are concerned, the company recently announced that it would <a href="http://www.techspot.com/news/60570-microsoft-slams-google-lack-android-security-patches.html">end its monthly security update</a> release cycle, known as Patch Tuesday, and instead will deliver bug fixes as soon as they are ready.Click to expand...

In other words IT can setup their own update schedule, when ever they see fit, not when MS dictates the world should update.

Now if I can turn off automatic updating. I'll kill the background process if I have to, to keep my machine from nagging to reboot. Or worse yet rebooting automatically, as well as updating. So far I've not seen the ability to turn automatic updating off.

Just noticed that after the install of the fall update, Windows Defender definition updates no longer appear in advanced update settings after they install: see All Settings>Update Security>Advanced options>View Your Update History.

It appears that only Windows updates now are registered in Update History.

I believe all previous versions of Insider showed the Defender updates.

until the next build (final release version?) is out.

MS will be pulling the build 10162 ISOs and suspending build update availability very soon.

Gabe Aul said:

We're suspending the availability of Windows 10 builds briefly while we prepare for that, and the next build that we flight to you will be delivered using the production channels. Starting tomorrow, we will also not be delivering any additional ISOs at this point as we really need Insiders to be using, stressing, and validating our distribution and upgrade processes. We’ll make ISOs available again in the future, but for now we ask you to upgrade your current build via Windows Update once the next build is released.Click to expand...

Copying this directly as I had posted it on another forum:

I just went out and bought an OLD copy of Half-Life that was sitting on the shelf of Electronics Boutique awhile ago... $9.99 CDN. What a steal, I always wanted a backup CD-Key anyway... now I have 3

Anyway I installed it and it installed the 1.0.0.9 version. I downloaded and installed the 1.1.1.0. I went to try out TFC in OpenGL mode at 800x600. When I try to join a game or create one, it says "Loading" then the screen starts flashing weird colours at me at fullscreen. I almost had a seizure.

When it finally gets into the server and into the game, its still doing this. I can only barely make out the game itself. To get out of it, I have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete hl.exe.

I tried switching to D3D... when I do this, the game works... however moving around is really weird and laggy and the screen is REALLY dark... even though I have gamma, and brightness and all that all the way up in the HL Config. WTF?

Has anybody else gotten this problem? Is it my piece of crap Radeon? I should get my geforce 2 MX back... none of this crap ever happened with that. It loves OpenGL

BTW, Steam has no problem using OpenGL with this video card.

Any help would be appreciated

Answer:Half-Life (original version) problems...

Try updating your video card drivers, and then switching to software rendering for your video in the game, if its on software rendering and your still having troubles you know its the game...

I just purchased the new Spectre x360 (i5 6200u version, model number d108) and I'm experiencing muddling battery life. I only seem to be managing around 6 hours or so of casual browsing. This is with the screen brightness down to the lowest possible, killing/removing unnecessary programs and barely anything running in the background other than Google Drive. I've seen a review which managed to get 9 hours of browsing and that was on the version running the Broadwell CPUs which are supposedly not quite as efficient as the newest ones. So what's going on here? I know manufacturers exaggerate but half the marketed time with minimal load and lowest brightness doesn't seem right?

Answer:Spectre x360 Poor battery life (Skylake version)

A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Spectre x360 with poor battery life. Battery life will vary depending on numerous factors including product model, configuration, loaded applications, features, use, wireless functionality, and power management settings. The maximum capacity of the battery will naturally decrease with time and usage. Here is a link to a performance troubleshooter with Windows. Biggest thing is the Apps are not closed or stopped. Please let me know how this goes.Thanks.

I have a Dell Insipron 8500 P4-M 2.00 GHz w/ 512 MB of RAM and an nVidia GeForce4 4200 Go (Dell Mobile) and I just installed Half-Life 2. When I try and run the game it tells me that my driver is not updated. I went to nVidia's website and downloaded the update for the only graphics driver available there and installed it and restarted my computer. When I loaded the game a second time, I got the same message and ignored it. When the game loaded up, it took a really long time and I never wound up getting a start-up or options menu. Is there anything that I can do about this? Is there any way to update this driver to possibly make newer games run better? Can I change the graphics card in this laptop, if nothing else, or is that too costly or even impossible?

Help please... I have 3 games that my computer won't run (H-L2, Pacific Assault, and Doom 3) and I'm getting really depressed....and broke!

Answer:half life 2 prob./driver updates?

Try the DirectX diagnostics that come with a free programme, Everest Home from http://www.lavalys.com and in the report that programme produces will also be a link to the graphics card website, hopefully straight to the correct driver. Are you running DirectX 9.0c?

Have had a fairly torrid time with email attachments which though present would neither Open nor Save.
Had a thread running about this which unfortunately didn't fix the problem
I think the only thing which coincided with the bother, was to update free Active X and Java.
A more or less up to date Acronis Restore, gave me respite though I did have to log in to several sites again including emails.
Now Java has popped up offering its update and I expect Active X will do the same. The system is XP using Comodo as Firewall and MS Windows security for the anti virul stuff. Malwarebytes and CCleaner are used regularly but have yet to find any mischief.
Question
If I strip Java out and run CCleaner before downloading and installing a fresh updated (freebie)version is this likely to avoid another stoppage in the email line?
In other words uninstall first and then install from scratch?

Answer:Updates of Java and Active X, can they upset my tranquil life?

On your other thread, Woolwell gave a link to Bt Community where others had the solution to the attachments problem. They re-set/ re-booted router. Seems to have something to do with the BT change of servers that has been going on for last few months.

My son has a two year T500 that's been working well (running Windows 7 Professional). Over the summer, I ran System Update and updated a bunch of drivers, including the Power Manager. He's now back at school and says he is only getting an hour and a half of battery life, which is much less than he used to get. Is it possible that the new Power Manager did something to reduce the battery life? I guess it's possible that two years of use has taken its toll but it would be a major coincidence.

Answer:T500 battery life poor since installing Lenovo updates

well what is the full model number of the T500? xxxx-xxx?Also under the information tab in Thinkvantage power manager? what is the full charge capacity and what is the design charge capacity for the battery? If he uses the battery everyday, then after 2 years this behaviour would be considered normal.

I ran a Partition Magic check for errors on my hard drive, and it came up with

Error 1507 - "bad file record signature"

My drive still boots to XP, but all this happened after what i'm guessing to be bad partitioning while installing ubuntu.

Any idea how to fix this error.

EDIT: I ran disk check through windows (both settings boxes checked) the computer restarted and ran the check. I still had the error afterward.

What else can i do? I can still boot into XP, but the error is going to haunt me if i don't fix it.

EDIT: I went back and ran "CHKDSK /F" from the command line (the computer restarted and did chkdsk, all that jazz) when i check for errors this time i get

Error number 1608 File record marked used File-33908

I get this error over and over for files 33908 through files 33936, at which point its halted because of too many errors

I received an email about new updates for my PC. Anyway I noticed that I think all or some of the updates have the same version as the previous drivers.

So why is that?

Answer:How come the new updates have the same version as older one?

Hi

Is the ?Date last modified? also the same? Anyway if your unit runs stabile it is not necessary to update anything.

It will be also interesting to know which notebook model you have and which updates are available.

For anyone interested.Nero 6 update dated Current version: 6.3.1.25Release date: September 20th, 2004. According to Nero web site this should cure any compatibility issues between Nero 6 and WINXP SP2 click here

Answer:Nero 6 updates version: 6.3.1.25

I think that Nero must really really hate those of us with dial up connections--thats the second full revision this month and the download components are even bigger that the last lot!!!! I count myself lucky that I can usually get 30+ MB downloaded before my ISP resets the connection--there are many that can't. Potentially a major stumbling block to SP2 this--not much point having it if you can't update your software as necessary to be compatible. Sorry about the minor rant---suppose I'd better get downloading, lol Thanks for letting us know about the updates BRYNIT ;o))

I just did a clean install of Windows 10. I then checked for updates a only got a few. This started me thinking since when I do 7 or 8 clean install, I get a lot of updates. So, I started my google quest to learn more about Versions, Builds, and Updates for Windows 10. I read Brink's Sticky as well. I have attached a pic to show what I have. Check for updates indicate that I am up to date.

Can someone explain Version, Build, Anniversary, and updates? Or maybe direct me to information that explains what these are as compared to the old way? I'm more familiar with lets say Windows 7 Home Premium, Service packs, and monthly updates. As a student in computers and networks I think I may need to have a better understanding how Windows 10 does things.

Answer:Version, Builds, and Updates Oh My!!!

This (Windows as a service and Servicing links are informative) - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...update-history

Windows 10 updates are cumulative, so you only need to install like 3-4 updates, which include everything.
There are 3 major versions, basically: RTM (Build 10240), SP1 (Build 10586) and SP2 (Build 14393 or 1607 AU).

Updates currently download only, what is needed, lets say there is 800MB update, 10 will download only 150 MB.
And if this was not good enough, MS is planning to improving it even further with Unified Update Platform (UUP).

Hey im new. I had a previously 100% working version of vista ultimate x64. Every update for every piece of software installed flawlessly.

I decided to reformat and start a fresh install. Since then 5 out of 60 potential vista updates installed successfully. I am constantly prompted to Install Updates, then shut down my computer. I have done so more than a dozen times, it appears to try to install 1 of 3 of the same updates every time with no avail. I check my history to see what the error it is, but i have a very high unsuccessful install rate and cant appear to figure to out which update is causing the problem.

Im pretty computer savvy so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Reformat working version, updates = no-go

Even the updates that did install successfully do not appear in my update history, which i find a little strange.

With regret, we have to announce that update support for dated versions of Spybot-S&D is going to end.

Fighting malware is a task that constantly requires new approaches. Some of these, we will make available through updated versions of tool libraries or plugins, but some make updates of the full software necessary. For those interested in a detailed technical background, see the OpenSBI wiki, which shows some of the changes in structure.

Users with very old hardware, and users of Windows 95 who could not use Spybot-S&D 1.4, chose to stay with very old versions of the software, and we tried to accommodate them by still offering them the updates, with the limitation that Spybot-S&D would complain about a lot of incompatible detection patterns and results would have to be used with extra care.

While we regarded that as a service for the aforementioned group of users, using current detection patterns in old software versions is getting too dangerous if that extra care is not applied, which we simply cannot expect from every user. We therefore decided to restrict updates to the current software version, and during version switches, as has recently happened with the switch to 1.6, the last version for a short while.

If you have any serious reasons for not upating to 1.6, let us know on the forum!Click to expand...

Hello,

I have a Dual Boot Vista-Seven, essentially to test the RC version. I love it and I think about doing a clean and unique install of Seven.
But when the RTM or the commercial version will release, will they be the same OSs as the RC with future updates?
Or will they may be some modifications not included in the updates?

I hope you understand my reflexion.
Bad english, sorry, I'm a french speaker.

There may be some functional changes between RC and RTM. There is even rumor of some User Interface change that may only appear in the RTM, but that is still only rumor.

But whichever way you go, when Windows 7 finally does go RTM and you purchase a valid licence and install media, you will not be able to "upgrade" install from RC to RTM. You will need to do a clean install.

Every time there is a windows update, my computer turns itself on and installs the update on its own. It's really annoying when I leave my home for a few days and come back to find the computer on at the log-in screen. How can I make it so the computer doesn't automatically turn itself on and install the updates?

Answer:Windows updates - Computer boots up on it's own and installs updates, how can I stop it doing updates on it's own?

In your PC settings, try setting Windows update to anything except "Automatic". However, with this setting change, you would need to regularly check for updates to ensure that your PC is up-to-date with regards to security.
You may create a Windows Central account to provide us with more information: what OS version are you referring to?

I have used this software for over two years.

I now have a warning that my AV and Anti spyware protection signatures are out of date.

My current signature is dated January 5, 2015, r19.

The "fix" button and "live update" button has failed to update the definitions.

Related - I have the same date for the network threat protection. My proactive threat protection definition is dated 21 january, r3.

How do I get this AV definition up to date?

Many thanks to the experts.

Avira has just released an updated version of its fleet of security products destined for desktop protection, bringing it to version 10. By far the most popular of the bunch is AntiVir Personal, which is also the most feature-stripped in Avira?s portfolio. It happens to be so popular because it falls under the freeware license. As its name suggests, the product can be employed with no restriction for personal use, while its adoption in corporate environment is strictly forbidden.

Due to a "my-space" virus, (the joys of girlfriends...) I had no choice but to reload Windows XP Home. I updated from the tools option once I updated a few drivers, now I am stuck at Service Pack 3. It simply stays at the progress bar once I click on the agreement...no download. I also seem to be missing a few of the components I once had....like my synaptics pointing device, (even though I have use of my mouse-pad.)
I have been visiting Tech-Guy for some time and I enjoy the wealt of knowledge you folks offer in here...(I think every computer should come pre-equipped with this site loaded right into it.)
I just need a little help. Thanks a million.

Answer:Solved: Reloaded XP Home version...can't get updates.

You could try downloading the executable file from the Windows Update Catalog site. If you not used the site before, you will have to install a small M$ software to use it (similar to the normal Windows Update site). Just enter KB936929 (SP3) in the search box, select the appropriate OS, click the Add button, then go to the "View Cart" and download the file. After download, find the file, open the folder and click the executable. SP3 should install from there.

One caution... What is the current version of your OS? I vaguely recall something about not being able to install SP3 unless you are already at SP1 or SP2 level. I'll do a little research on it or perhaps another member will have something to contribute in that regard. If I find anything, I'll post back.

Raybro

EDIT... Found it... Click here to read about it. You MUST have SP1 or SP2 installed in order to install SP3. Raybro

Firstly, just as the staff at Windows support instructed me, what's occurred to me seems illegal. So, yes, I'm aware that my problem looks sketchy. Now, I turned my computer off early in the morning today, and when I got home around 6:00, I tried to power it on and noticed that it was still in the "Installing updates" stage of when you power down, and it was only on "2/11". So, I thought, "eh", and held the power button down. When I powered it back up, I was greeted with a text box that informed me that my version of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit was not genuine, and that I needed to validate it. I was soon chatting with a rather solicitous support agent from Windows, and he told me that since my product key was flagged as being blocked, I had to buy either a replacement or purchase a new version of Windows. I did not favor either of those suggestions, and that lead me here. I don't understand why Windows would consider the product key for my version of Windows illegal, simply because I powered it off during updates. Can anyone give further explanation or another suggestion?

This is my first time using this site, so apologies if I've placed this thread in the wrong genre. Thank you in advance for replies.

Answer:Turning off during updates rendered my version of Win 7 illegitimate.

Well when you shut down Windows down in the middle of installing updates anything can happen.

Believe it or not, there are people surfing online who still insist on using this ancient version, despite avast having offered many newer and more powerful versions (avast 5, 6, 7, 8, 2014, 2015, 2016, 12).

Hi people of windows 8,
I am experiencing an issue with a prolific USB serial adapter on win8.1.
Google taught me the adapter works with an older driver but not with the latest one.
I can get it to work with driver version 3.2, but when I reboot, the driver is automatically reset to 3.4 and the adapter stops working. I have to manually modify this every time which obviously is a hassle.
Things I tried: in device manager, right click the device, delete the driver. This only works until the next reboot.
Manually setting the driver to v3.2-> same result.
control panel>software: there is no option to delete version 3.4, only to delete version 3.2

Could anyone tell me how to delete v3.4 definitively and to stop windows from updating to the faulty driver?

Answer:usb serial driver updates automatically to faulty version

You can try to rollback that driver in device manager (from 3.4 to 3.2). That should work for you and it should be permanent:

Good luck,

Mozilla Checks Flash Version After Firefox Updates

Web browser attacks are an increasing threat these days. Attackers not only expoit web browser vulnerabilities but also those of plugins and add-ons that are installed in the web browser. The Adobe Flash plugin is one of the high priority targets of attackers due to its distribution percentage. A recent article at H-Online estimates that about 80% of web surfers use an outdated version of Adobe Flash which can have a severe impact on system stability and security.
That?s where the Mozilla developers began thinking about solutions for this problem. They quickly came up with the solution to test the version of the Adobe Flash plugin after Firefox updates. Regular Firefox users know that Firefox will open a what?s new page after an update. This what?s new page will contain the Adobe Flash version check.

My WMP11 does the following:
1. It clones music titles...even in front of my eyes.
2. Music files disappear.
3. Titles are now assuming wrong names even though content remains.
4. My music files come from my Music Library. Those have not changed or cloned..

5. I deleted WMP11 and re-installed...but all the above errors returned.
6. My Library files are skewed. Music is mixed with Video and with Documents and all around. Why? I dunno.
7. My music library is around 25GB; but it changes with the losses mentioned in #2 above.
8. I tried RealPlayer but their format leaves a lot to be desired by me. Also, it keeps requiring Flashplayer and no matter how many time I download it, it asks for it again.
9. I am 80 years old, not very computer savvy and I'm blessed with Parkinsons. Music is my hobby.

I opened my laptop the other day and all of a sudden the user interface with Windows 10 had totally changed. What this means for me as a student is that I've lost the usability I depended on to switch between OneNote for Desktop/Edge/word and I have spent the last day with the attitude it would just take a moment to adjust to it but that surely It would be better- I loved the switch to 10, but this feels like a major set back:

* I can't swipe apps onto the screen anymore (It goes to a task master shot of all apps open) This means I can't switch between the 3 or 4 apps I use routinely. The ability to swipe and decide to pull up an open app to only half the screen is gone- instead of being a menu on the side to chose and drag to part or full screen, now if I select another open app it becomes full- and if its not Edge, I can't click and drag it half way.
* Edge isn't formatting to fit the screen and it wont allow me to zoom in or out to change the scale of what is shown, so the only way to see the entire content of a site I have to have Edge as the only thing on the screen and I need to have 2 apps on screen at once almost always
* I don't see the "hover" benefit of the latest edge showing up at all

All of this makes the dual function/snap useless to me and that's the entire reason why I am using this.
Do these "symptoms" indicate anything to anyone that perhaps my update wasn't complete or is this really the "new and improved" arrange... Read more

is this possible

You can download SP1, but all updates after that must be downloaded.
After it is installed, you will have to use a valid key number.

I installed a Japanese version of windows 10 but then bought an English version and installed that after finding all the menus could not be changed to English during the install.
My question is does the English version overwrite the JP version or are files left on the SSD using up space?
Also in the end I returned the English version cause I found you can add a language pack to the JP version. The problem with this is that if you get a blue screen the Windows messages are in Japanese. So now unless I can change this I'm going to go back to an English version of Windows 10.

Answer:The version of this file is not compatible with the version of windows you are runnin

Hi Haruki92,

What files are you trying to transfer? Regular files (documents, photos etc) should be fine to just drag over. However some applications are not able to run in a 64-bit environment.

Please post exactly what you're transferring and a screenshot if possible.

Hi, I have had my T430 since August of 2012 at the start of college. I am currently running windows 8.1 pro and I recently just noticed my battery life issues and after installing lenovo settings I discovered that my battery's capacity is at 27% of the original capacity. The battery life is really bad, e.g. it says 15 minutes remaining at 25% on POWER SAVER mode.  I have google this and it said to "reset my battery" but unfortunately 8.1 Lenovo power manager doesn't have that feature.  I am just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for what to do?  Will I just have to get a new battery?

Answer:Lenovo T430 Battery Life 1+ hour on life saver

you would have to have a pre-Windows 8 OS to gain that crucial battery reset function. This is one reason why i dislike running Win 8 on ThinkPad.

For the past day windows wants to install the same 4 updates over and over, I have windows update set to download and let me choose when to install.

I can't understand why I even need them, as I uninstalled net framework.

Notice how the update at 8:17 AM., KB2656368, is the same as one of the 4 updates installed at 7:47 PM.
Windows wants to install the same four kb files again.
How do I stop this?

Answer:Windows 7 updates same for updates every time it checks for updates

See if you can System Restore to before Net Framework 4 was installed and then Hide it when it is again offered in Updates.

But be aware that some programs will need it and may not prompt you of this leaving you to guess why they are not installing or performing correctly. For this reason I always install it.

So you might want to reinstall it using its standalone installer since it may not have uninstalled correctly anyway.

To all owners of X1 Carbon 2017 (5th gen).I read all of those reviews where people are impressed by 10+ hours of battery life (15,5h advertised), but I can't really figure out how....!? First time I tested was a normal working day - Firefox (a lot of Flash it must be said), Outlook, Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat. Nothing really heavy, no peripherals except Bluetooth mouse. Brightness dimmed 1 level below the ideal. It lasted for about 4 hours! I windows's list of apps affecting battery life, Firefox was on 1st place with 32-35% Second attempt - same set of tasks, however less Firefox (no flash) - 7 hours. Now in the middle of a 3rd attempt (using Opera this time) - battery time remaining indication goes over 10h only when I completely stop using the laptop Not many apps running in the background either (Dropbox, Skype...) So my question - do you guys get more than 10h of battery life and HOW? Do you enable "Battery Stretch"? How actively do you use it and for what?

Alright, I thought I had the process nailed down, but I'm not having much luck.

I have a new laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit version coming tomorrow. It comes with 4GB of RAM and Windows 7 seems like the first OS that has wide support for the 64 bit version, please correct me if I'm wrong. So I thought I'd upgrade to 64 bit since everyone tells me I can do so, legally, for free, with the key on the sticker on the bottom of the laptop.

So I planned to download the ISO via Bit Torrent and check the hash, as somebody recommended. I installed MD5Summer.

But I'm stuck because I can't seem to find the Hash Checksums for W7 HP 64. Can anybody provide me a link to them on MS's site, or similar?

Anybody got a good BT link to save me from searching myself? I didn't see any that looked like the right version on Demonoid. What should my search term be? "Windows 7 OEM 64"?

I've never installed Windows 7, does the procedure differ from XP? I've installed XP hundreds of times.

What's the best way to verify performance of my new laptop? Free benchmarking program? Website with common benchmarks? I'd like to see if the OS upgrade actually benefits the benchmarks.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

I have a bunch of OS backups using ghost and I can use ghost explorer to view the image files. Unfortunately I didn't make details on what OS version was installed at the time, just dates the images were taken.

How can I find if these images were from Vista or Windows 7 by just looking at the contents of the image, without actually restoring the image?

Answer:How to identify Windows version by file version?

did you install IE8 on your Vista install?
otherwise it comes default with IE7, and Win7 comes with IE8.

so you could use the file version of iexplore.exe, if you left IE7 on the Vista install.

possibly bootmgr file might be different file versions.

I'm trying to install some applications on a Lenovo ideapad with windows 7 home premium, 64-bit, SP1. I'm getting the following error - "The version of this file is not compatible with the the version of windows you're running." I've installed all of these specific applications (e.g. RealPlayer, Logmein, Windows 2007 Compatibility Pck File Format Converter) and many other 32-bit apps on other Windows 7 64-bit machines, including 2 other Lenovo laptops with the exact same specs, purchased at the same time, with absolutely no issue.

I thought maybe it was some kind of virus so I reformattted the laptop and I'm still getting the same issue. It's VERY frustrating. I've searched everywhere and don't see any answers. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening or how to correct it?

I built a new pc a month ago and have been running Win7 RC1 on it for the time being. Obviously Win7 is coming out next week so I am getting ready to purchase the full version. I could buy the Retail version of Win7 Home Premium 64-bit for $199, or the System Builders version for $99 on newegg.

Can anybody go ahead and buy the System Builders version, or is that restricted to actual pc resellers? Would newegg ask me for a resellers license or something if I try to order it? I built the pc, don't need MS support for it, and will only ever use that copy of Win7 on that pc. I just hate spending twice as much money for the Retail version if legally I can buy and use the System Builders version for half the price. Or am I better off paying more money for the Retail version?

Also, if I can buy the System Builders version, I assume it will come with the install dvd as well as install key? Plus, with that, I can install that copy on just this pc as many times as I want without limitations, correct? Meaning, I usually format and reload windows on a pc twice a year so over 4-5 years I will be reinstalling that copy of windows on the same pc 8-10 approx over the years.

Answer:Buying full version of Windows7: Retail version or System Builders version?

Anyone can buy an OEM license. They're cheaper because they don't include Microsoft support. You are your support. OEM licenses are tied to the hardware on which they're installed. Technically you are prohibited from installing an OEM copy on a completely different system, though many people will do this and successfully activate their copy by saying their motherboard failed and had to be replaced, etc.

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

I keep getting Error message: Install Failure after Windows updates are downloaded and Windows attempts to install those updates.

The download is successfull, however, after Windows 7 attempts to install those updates I get this message:

Configuring Windows Update. Do Not Turn off computer.

After Windows attempts the installations of those updates, I get the following message: Failure configuring Service Pack. Reverting Changes. Error_install_failure (0x80070643).

I contacted Microsoft on the problem via emails....they went through a number of trouble shooting techniques....but after all of their recommendations, all they could tell me was to reinstall Windows 7.

I really would not like to do that. Do you have any idea what the problem is?

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I am really flustrated with my T61P - a week ago it lost my user profile, so I installed a new hard drive and reloaded the OS (Vista Ultimate) from the recovery disks.  I have installed antivirus software, do all the MS updates, and then uninstalled all the ThinkAdvantage programs (except for Client Security).  Continuing to check for new Windows Updates works fine.  Then I installed ThinkAdvantage System Update - can still do Windows updates.  Run System Update, install 19 updates, reboot - Windows Updates no longer works!  I get the message "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running/  You may need to restart your computer."  The service is running (I even restarted it from Admin tools).  Rebooting makes no difference.  I have reloaded the OS and updates about 6 times in the last week and always end up with this problem.  It does appear that since Windows Update was working before installing the Lenovo updates that there is a problem with the Lenovo updates. Help would be appreciated. David

I'm usually pretty savvy when it comes to de-virusing a computer, but this one has got me completely stumped.

I recently noticed a browser hijack where in all browsers, any result from yahoo.com is redirected to porn. Also, every update (anti-malware application download, update, or windows kb download, or windows update) will fail, sometimes with a DNS failure, sometimes with a 404 at all times.

I have tried to download

Ad-Aware (updates fail, returns 404)
AVG Antivirus (updates fail, dns times out)
Avira AntiVir (updates fail, returns 404)
Microsoft Windows Update fails to open (just redir's back to windows update)
Microsoft KB Downloads (Service Pack 3, various KB patches return 404)

Can anyone help identify this? I updates avira, and avg manually (via a cd from another computer) and they say the computer is clean. All Conficker scan tools say the computer is clean. Microsoft live onecare says the computer is clean.

I also add that I'm going to format & reinstall, but I would really like to know what I have (had) so that when I am trying to recover data from the old HDD I don't reinfect myself.

Thanks in advance. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi,

I am wondering if end-of-life Vista is more dangerous than end-of-life XP. My reasoning is that Vista more closely resembles Win 10 than XP. So as MS was saying, attackers may reverse engineer patches meant for recent OS's into exploits that work on the end-of-life one. So it seems to me that Vista looks more dangerous than XP.

This is an inconvenient delay, not anything serious. Running Windows 7, if it makes a difference.

Issue: Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates block Microsoft Updates until MSE is finished.

Description: I have Microsoft Update (or Windows Update, whichever it's known as in 7) set to automatically check for updates but not download or install without my approval. I do this so I can review what's being updated, (I'm a little wary of Microsoft putting an anti-piracy app in as a "critical" update in the last year or two). Anyways, when I boot up the computer, it checks for updates and alerts me of them.

However, Microsoft Security Essentials also auto-checks for updates upon boot, and if it has an update it will automatically being downloading and installing it in the background. Which is all well and good, except whenever that's happening it causes MU to "fail" updates until it's done updating. Thus, I have to remember to wait until the MSE update is done, then run the MU update.

Question: MSE definition updates are included under "Optional" updates in MU, is there a way to make MSE stop updating independent of MU so I can queue all the updates together? I feel like this would be the easiest way to prevent this annoyance. I don't see an option, and I'd rather put up with this annoyance if the only solution is to put all updates back into Microsoft's hands completely.

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials updates blocking other windows updates

My understanding of MSE is it will check several times during the to make it has the latest updates. Most GOOD VA programs will do this as there are several releases daily for AV definitions. This is the only way you and your machine will be aware of these releases.

When some of these attacks happen, a definition is released, but as the infection is refined, the the definition must also be refined and/or improved. I use F-Prot on my machines, but I install MSE on the kids and grand kids machines. I have seen as many as 12 releases in one day from F-Prot, this is what is call" being on top of things".

So I would not want to rely on ME being the one to check several times daily on all of my machines to see if a new release has been made.

And I only visit Windows Update (not Microsoft Update) and install the critical updates under custom install.I'm wondering:1. Are the updates for MS Office that are critical security things included when you do Windows Update? (For example, there are a number of things listed here towards the bottom: http://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=2232 -- would those have been included in the last batch of critical Windows updates?2. Do you need the GDI+ thing to do Office Updates?3. When you go to the Office Updates site, it wants you to install and run some kind of Active X thing. Is this necessary? And can it cause any problems?4. Can doing critical Office updates (separate from whatever, if anything, that comes with Windows Update) cause any problems or conflicts with other things on your computer? Thanks for the help!

Answer:How Important Are Ms Office Updates? Are They Included In Windows Critical Updates?

I don't have that detection tool either. At least some of the office updates are available through the windows update feature. You can also navigate to the Office updates site from the windows update site. There are no problems with installing the office updates separately. In fact, I generally download only 1 or 2 updates at a time as I am on dial-up.
