Head over to Avast.com and they'll advertise to Download Free Antivirus.

We are automatically opted-in to get Google Chrome web browser, and it's noticeable that the font size is very small to read.

Customise Options: They provide finer controls, should user wish to opt-out of any Security, Privacy and Performance features. However, we will ignore tweaking the installation and click on Install from the screenshot above.

Avast silently installs in the background and hides it's own pop-up notification so you continue using your PC.

Avast was successfully installed and we are prompted with a screen to Continue.

We are given the opportunity to install Avast Free Mobile Security for Android.

Clicking on Install Free, we are taken to the Google Play Store so we can remotely install Avast for Android.

Google Chrome has been installed and opens without any extensions or other search engines.

When we open Avast for the first time, we are given a gift to boost security. Let's Unwrap it.

But at this point the GUI froze with a blank white screen and was unable to do anything. I am forced to restart Windows.

Let's try that again, we are offered reasonable discounts for Pro Antivirus and Internet Security. I continued by clicking on the green Upgrade button.

Here we can choose between 1, 2 or 3 years of paid protection.

By continuing with upgrade, we get an Upsell Ad to spend a little more for Avast Premier.

Let's proceed with Upgrade to Avast Premier. My order appears with auto-renewal enabled and other Avast products at discounted prices that we can add to the basket. To continue we need to enter personal information like address and payment details.

Continuous Protection will automatically renew your subscription, as explained by clicking on More Info.

Back to Avast and we find the Software Updater, but Automatic updates is Off. Attempts to enable, we are shown that we must Upgrade to use.

Avast Passwords can be used for free, but a Premium license can be purchased (as seen in the Order basket screenshot, 3 up)

Avast offers SecureLine VPN with a 7-day free trial.

Avast offers Cleanup Premium, so I Check My PC.

Avast says a lot can be improved, so let's Resolve the issues.

We are offered to Buy Now or Try It for Free.

In order to Try for Free, we must enter payment details for a 30-day free trial. Again, I do not wish to purchase anything.

When we Activate and stick with Free Antivirus, we are offered a Free Trial for Internet Security.

Let's continue with the Free Trial for premium protection and get more security features.

We are asked to reboot Windows to use Avast Internet Security.

Windows Task Manager: Displays what will load at Start-up.

The complete list of Avast applications on Windows 10 via the Control Panel.

This concludes my How Much Crap Gets Installed for Avast Free Antivirus. It's an eye-opener to compare Avast with AVG, and see how they differ in marketing tactics.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Head over to AVG.com, you'll be introduced to download their Free Antivirus software.

AVG's web installer will begin to download the latest components for you to begin, which takes a few seconds on a super-fast connection.

Users are given the option to customise installation such as installing Google Chrome web browser.

By clicking Continue, we get the choose between Install Basic (Free Antivirus) or Install the Best (Internet Security). Please note, this page is shown even if you click on Custom Installation.

Clicked on Install the Best, as that's what I think is best for my Windows PC, but also it's a nice-looking green button and no credit card required. However, there's not much room for customisation, as seen below, it automatically installs the default components.

Head over to 360totalsecurity.com to download Qihoo's free PC security and utility software for Windows PC.

Whilst the web installer fetches the latest installer, we see that Qihoo promotes the Opera web browser in the webpage Advert: "Loading too slow? Try the fastest browser. Free Download now" and notice how they also hosts the OperaSetup.exe file. Interesting..

The 360 Total Security installer hosts a very simple design and an Options toggle to change directory location. We are already opted-in for the 360 User Experience Improvement Program and "Safe and Fast" Opera web browser.

Comodo offers a Free Internet Security suite for Windows users which provides complete protection against viruses and attacks. Alternatively users can Upgrade to Pro version for $28.

However the downloads page offers a better discount at 50% off, where you get Pro for $20.

Running the installer, we are informed that a series of programs are included.

Region-dependent, Comodo offer to change our home page, new tab and search engine to another service, Yahoo!. In other countries, Yandex may be offered.

Again we can see the Pro version being pushed, but is also checked by default. We can Try 30-days trial of Pro which includes 24/7 Support. After the 30-days, Comodo will revert to the free version.

In terms of a custom install, there's not a lot of choice apart from installing with No Real-Time protection, as Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender Antivirus. And for compatibility, stability and performance reasons, it's better to avoid using both simultaneously.

So basically I only installed the behavior shield from the avast installation wizard. I was thinking having Kaspersky as my main AV along with avast's behavior blocker is a good set up. However, admittingly I am a novice, and I don't know if these two will clash. So far, everything seems to be going smoothly, but the WD notification icon is displaying that X and is saying I shouldn't have more than one AV installed. Thanks.

Answer:Using Kaspersky free with only Avast Behavior Shield installed.

I personally think it should work ok running these 2 programs if Avast is only enabled for behavior blocking.

I always check at Bleeping computer, download first. If it is not there, I look for the tutorials, very diligent about this. That being said, the question is, I’m looking to download Avast antivirus free, I found a tutorial (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/bleeping-computer-forums/#post). However, It does not match my screen shots. I keep getting “from download.com or Cnet” and then a bunch of crap comes with it. Yes I do select  “Custom install” & untic the added garbage.  I am still getting unwanted “Google Chrome” ect.. I am just looking for an updated link, external or otherwise, not taking any chances without Bleeping Computer. Thank you.Edit: Moved topic from Windows XP to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Execute the avast_free_antivirus_setup on the first install screen make sure you uncheck the check box's and click Express Install like on the image:During install make sure you select the Free version, its enough for most users.
You need to provide a valid e-mail address to activate Avast, the program is free but you need to register every year and opt for the free version.

Wow! It's really been a year since I was here? I'm a baaaddd girl! All righty then. A year ago, I had Avast! (home free edition) Antivirus installed on my computer after it got hit with a "figgler" virus.
The program has worked very well, but it's due to expire soon. I've made two attempts to re-install, but I've received an error message each time. Both errors seemed to concern server response, this computer runs Win XP and is very slow with downloads of this type.
I'm not all that tech savvy and am terrified I'll mess up. Due to my financial situation (spent a few hundred trying to save my cat's life back in January), I cannot afford another computer if this one gets discombobulated (I "inherited" this one when a family member upgraded).
I also wish to ask the other members if they can recommend another free (or a low-cost) anti-virus program which would offer similar protection to Avast! If I continue to have problems with Avast!, I will definately need a good replacement to protect this computer. Thank you one and all. Have a good week!:wave

The speed and ability to complete an anti-virus or anti-malware scan depends on a variety of factors. The program itself and how its scanning engine is designed to scan: using a signature database vs heuristic scanning or a combination of both.Options to scan for spyware, adware, riskware and potentially unwanted programs (PUPS).Options to scan memory, boot sectors, registry and alternate data streams (ADS).Type of scan performed: Deep, Quick or Custom scanning. What action has to be performed when malware is detected.A computer's hard drive size.Disk size and used capacity (number of files that have to be scanned).Types of files (.exe, .dll, .sys, .cab, archived, compressed, packed, email, etc) that are scanned.Whether external drives are included in the scan.Competition for and utilization of system/CPU resources by the scanner.Other running processes and programs in the background.Whether the scanning engine stalls, hangs or freezes.Interference from malware.Interference from other security programs attempting to scan at the same time.Interference from other programs attempting to update (download/install) components from the Internet.Interference from the user (whether or not you use the computer during the scan).Note: Using two or more program security scanning engines at the same time can cause each to interfere with the other, cause systems hangs, false detections, unreliable results and other unpredictable behavior. To speed up a scan, uninstall unnecessary programs, cle... Hi

A friend gives me an Avast Premium license for 8 months. I am using a free combo with Comodo Firewall (Cruelsister settings) and Avast (Jack settings) and I have doubts about which option protects me better.

I dont know the quality of the Avast firewall, I also dont know the level of its sandbox and on the other hand, Comodo Firewall is not comfortable to maintain, since it blocks legitimate programs, browser extensions, and even Windows updates.

I know I can have Sandboxie installed on my computer to act on demand, but what I'm most interested in knowing is what configuration do you advise me regarding protection.

Thank you in advance

Answer:Avast Premier vs Comodo Firewall + Avast free

Avast is sux better totaly change it to other software... go use fully Comodo and instal free zemana and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for o/d scan. if you dont like comodo sandbox you can use free version of sandboxie at last.

Trying to figure out if I can install a bootable usb windows 8 version that I have to assume is an upgrade version and def not 8.1 (Feb 2013), without having to install windows 7 first on a clean ssd?

So I bought a cheap $40 version of Windows 8, a lot longer ago than I thought - way back in Feb 2013.

Fast forward to today, my 4 year old Win 7 pro x64 install on a 128gb M4 Crucial SSD is borked, too many issues to bother dealing with, I have a new 512gb MX100 Crucial and figure I'd install that with Windows 8 on it.

So I pull out my bootable USB drive I stuck windows on way back then, only to read around and see that apparently my Win 8 Pro version needs to have Windows 7 installed before it will let you upgrade.

Suckity suck. I am wrong - or do I have to go dig up all the Win 7 stuff and install that on my new SSD first? And if that is the case - any reason I should just install Win 7 x64 Pro again and screw Windows 8?

I am currently running:Avast! Free EditionWindows DefenderMalwarebytes Anti-Malware (free edition)Windows FirewallI don't like Windows Defender. I want to replace it with another, free, reliable anti-spyware program. What should I use? SOMETHING THAT IS CONFLICT-FREE WITH AVAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And overall, do i have good protection? EDIT: Apparently, Avast! auto-updates every 240 minutes, by default. I thought it updated immediately when there were new virus definitions? Can I set it so that it updates like this?

Answer:Best FREE anti-spyware program? (must be conflict-free with avast! home)

1) You cannot set an av to update when there are new definitions - how would it know? 2) I don't care for Windows Defender either and I always disable it on all of my systems. You're fine without it. The only thing I would add to what you already use is SpywareBlaster free edition. It does NOT run resident and you need to remember to update it about once a week. It blocks known malicious web sites. Other than that you should be fine.

I am getting really frustrated with my search. I am looking for FREE dvd player software available for download that doesn't contain spyware, adware or bull**** promises that it's free when it's a trial. Can anyone suggest or know of a dvd player that will actually play movies with no restrictions? Doesn't have to be fancy....all I want to do is to be able to watch movies on my PC.

All of the programs I've installed either contain viruses, adware/spyware or simply don't work at all. Do I really have to go out and purchase software just to watch a movie on my computer? I just got a brand new HP Pavillion dv5000 laptop. It has a 2.0 ghz AMD Turion, the ATI Radeon Xpress 200M graphics card, something like an 80 gig hard drive and (for the moment, my dad is buying a lot more) 256 mb RAM. The OS is XP Home.

I'd be very pleased with this laptop, except that HP has loaded a multitude of (AOL, Earthlink (two kinds of each), Wildtangent and other) commercial offers on this laptop, and I've been removing them, but it's an enormous pain. Does anyone know of an efficient way to do this? I wandered into the registry, and as I guessed, (for instance) the wildtangent registry was not deleted when I uninstalled the offer that came with my computer. So I've been filtering down the list, checking for things that I know for sure should not be on my computer. I've gotten a bunch of spyware and adware removing programs already.

There's another problem, too: HP has set something somewhere so that whenever I change my homepage, it is reset to the hp website personalized page with their crappy news. I've tried resetting it in the Internet Options section, through (I think it was) SpywareBlaster, and within the registry at the internet explorer startup register, and every time I do it, as soon as I hit "apply" or the equivalent, the home page changes back to their stupid site. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I've found a file at "C:\SWSETUP" called "BrandIt.ini," which contains a lot of de... Read more

I have always used Avast and Comodo as my AV/Firewall combination. I find it to be very useful, and although Comodo provides many annoying popups, they are useful and informational (I would consider myself a competent computer user, though no expert).

Recently, I just wanted to see how good my combination was and if there was a better one. I found topics that said of how Avast's web shield completely bypasssed Comodo's rules. I tested this:

1) Block chrome.exe in Comodo completely
2) Check that both Comodo and Avast are updated, and Avast web shield ON
3) Open Chrome and see what happens

Results: At first I thought it was fine, google.com was blocked. Then I tried clicking on bookmarks. yahoo.com would open, youtube.com would open, etc. I was shocked to find that Comodo was letting these websites open even though chrome.exe was blocked!

After doing some more research, and realizing that this was a big problem, and that many solutions did not work, with avast being blamed or comodo being outdated, or even that Win 7 64 bit was limiting comodo, I tested it again with web shield OFF.

I repeated the process of blocking chrome and opened google.com and other websites. This time all the websites were blocked!

Is there a solution where I can keep web shield on and have comodo be effective in blocking? Or do I need a new firewall?

Answer:Avast 7 free! AV + Comodo Free Firewall Conflicts

Have been happily using Avast anti-virus for some time now but today I was advised that my 'subscription has expired' and that I need to renew. Unfortunately it would seem free protection is no longer available as when I click on the 'Renew now' button I'm directed to Avast site to renew for 39.99 (after 10 'loyalty' discount). Redownloading the free version gives me a message 'there was an error changing the product configuration' when I try to install it.
Can anyone advise if this is in fact the case (ie that I'm not doing anything incredibly stupid)? If it's not longer free, what do people currently recommend for free protection?

The AVG sub-forum appears to inactive except for Beta / Changelogs posts.

What are the major differences between AVG Free Antivirus and Avast Free Antivirus in 2018?

Answer:2018: What are the Major differences between AVG Free and Avast Free?

There will be more available in Avast Free as as far as I am aware, I believe the difference is in the protection components. Avast incorporated some of the code-base from AVG after they acquired the company into Avast software regarding static and dynamic but I doubt the products are identical in terms of what is available now. I'd imagine they acquired AVG to give "Avast" branded software a boost, and kept the AVG company up and running to generate more income from all the existing AVG customers.

This is speculation though, I can't say for sure.

Hi i currently use AVG 8.0 free on my vista laptop and have used it for some years however after learning that it doesn't offer full protection against items such as rootkits i began to search the forums where there are a few people who recommend Avast which does offer protection against rootkits. So should i switch to Avast free edition? and will it work well with vista. i am also looking for another free simple interfaced non obtrusive firewall to replace the standard windows firewall. Can you recommend one?(Ps i have looked at COMODO twice but can't get the hang of it)

Hi,we need to know which antivirus program does the most complete job for virus protection and removal--Avast free home,or ,Avg free.We know Avast adds 4 more programs to "task manager" than Avg does,so does that represent Avast doing a more complete job?
Thanks for any information

Answer:Avast free or Avg free--which is the most complete program?

They both detect viruses well, but in my opinion, and others also, Avast seems to be better at removing them. Select the custom installation option and you have the option of leaving out any of the four sub-programs. For instance, since I don't have Outlook, I didn't install the Outlook virus scanner module so I wouldn't waste storage and computer resources for something I didn't need.

I am running avast free, spybot s&d free. should I turn off windows defender? What about malwarebytes pro instead of spybot? will more then 1 antispyware program slow down my computer?

Answer:avast free,spybot s&d free and win defender

I haven't used spybot in many years, it got too glitchy and difficult to use for me...
I tested several Anti Malware programs years ago and chose Malwarebytes (MBAM) Pro, no regrets here.
If you're thinking of MBAM paid, you should get the PRO Lifetime license while you still can.

Newegg.com - malwarebytes pro

MBAM Premium (Ver 2) is an annual license (yearly fees).
I don't use Windows Defender, I use MBAM real time on all my systems.

For additional "real-time security" I also use:
WinPatrol - WinPatrol- Ruiware, LLC
EMET - Download Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit v3.0 from Official Microsoft Download Center

I noticed that the Avast free i have is 154 mb and on the MG download site it shows 47.8 mb. Did I download a bunch of stuff I don't need? Also not sure if I need the Zone Alarm toolbar. Thanks in advance for you responses!

Answer:Avast free and Zone Alarm free

Often we have versions here at Majorgeeks that are not so easy to find on the makers sites. The makers like you to download versions that offer a trial of the full versions or full suites. The ZA toolbar is a renamed version of the Ask toolbar, I consider it crapware but it probably helps pay for the freeware we all like; decline to install it anyway or uninstall it if it gets in via the backdoor.

Beware, there are also malware sites out there pretending to offer the real thing, too! Some of them look pretty authentic.

Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies about security. You can sugges other free products that are easy and protect well. Only antivirus.

Answer:Avast free vs Bitdefender free for newbies

If they absolutely don't know anything ("Hey, what's quarantine? What's scanning? What's definitions?") then Bitdefender without a doubt. If they know basic settings and to tell the difference between false positives than Avast!. I'll have to vote Bitdefender here, but Avast! is a much greater antivirus with those with basic security knowledge.

Update: See below post. I know longer reccommend Bitdefender. +1 to Avast!

So, I'm choosing a free antivirus software to use on my daily driver (I'm a vary advanced user) and I'm trying to decide between Bitdefender free and avast free.
First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?
Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything).
So which do you think I should go with? Thanks

Answer:Avast Free or Bitdefender Free?

Hi Robo11 First, I've heard that Bitdefender is dead/unmaintained/buggy?It's false. Bitdefender is still actively developped and have quite a good share of the Antivirus market. About the buggy part, it's down to the user's experience. Personally, most of the experiences I had with Bitdefender were quite bad. It was buggy, hogging resources, hard to uninstall, etc. But for some, it might just be the "best Antivirus" they ever used. Also, I've heard avast is kind if shady, I've heard rumors that when you call tech support they pretend there are problems on your computer to get you to pay money, and that it downloads malware on the users pc (Just rumors I've heard, Not accusing them of anything). It's false as well. There's no reputable Antivirus company that would do such a thing. Also, avast! forums offers malware removal assistance in the same kind as BleepingComputer, and there's also UNITE members helping on its forums, so I really doubt that this would ever happen. If you're torn between these two products, since both of them are free, I would suggest you to give them both a try (one after the other, not at the same time) and see for yourself which one you like better. My personal choice goes to avast!, but that's just me. Can you open the Bitdefender program/interface, then take a screenshot of it to post it here so we can see what you're seeing? Also, many free Antivirus products will ask you to registry in order to use them. So they are free, they just ask you to register yourself in order to be able to use them.

I've more or less decided to substitute my NIS 2005. (No problems, but its a bit old now (new definitons)). I've looked at some alternatives and decided upon AVG and Avast when it comes to the antivirus. Before I make the final choice I want to take a look at these programs' options and use them for a while and keep NIS installed. I've got a couple of questions about this.
Will AVG and Avast cause any conflicts with NIS as long as I dont turn on AVG's and Avast's shield/live time protection, but just use them for scaning?
Will it be any problems if I turn of NIS's auto-protect, but keep the other features on, and turn on the shield to one of the others?
Will AVG and Avast turn on the live protection when I install them, and will this cause any problems? Should I turn of NIS's antivirus first?
Is it easy to turn on and of AVG's and Avast's live protection?
Am I free to choose whatever firewall I want in combination with AVG/Avast, or are there any limitations when it comes to this?

I guess I know the answers to questions 1,2, 4 and 5 (no, no, yes and yes), however Im often wrong, so I just wanted to be sure. Anything else I should know?

Answer:Avg, Avast And Nis Installed At The Same Time

I think your assumptions are correct. Be aware, though, that there is a real possibility that one of the AVs may detect another's definitions as a live virus; looking at the path of the found instance will generally allow you to know whether the file is actually a virus definition or not.Q3: You should turn off the real time protection running on your "live" AV before turning on the other AVs; as I remember, when you start AVG, live protection is on by default, and I assume the same with Avast. Personally, if it were me, and I was determined for various reasons to switch from NIS, I would completely uninstall it.Regards,John

Question: AVG Free or AVAST?

My Norton 2006 will run out in 15 days and want to replace it. This was a three month trial package installed in my new Dell 530 when I ordered it.

Been looking at AVG 7.5 Free or Avast as free anti virus programs until I can buy either Kaspersky or Bitdefender for fuller protection. I realize AVG and AVAST do not have separate firewalls like Norton does. Something I would miss but was Just tired of Norton's resource hogging that slowed down my new PC to think of renewing it.

But which free one would be better?

This computer is a huge business investment for me after using less than decent computers in the past. Since I also do more than "occasional" gaming (and act as a PC gaming website admin), this one will have to last me for several years if possible.

Dell Inspiron 530
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.2ghz
320 HD gig
1 gig RAM
512 Nvidia 8300GS video card

My ordered my computer with WinXP SP2 instead of VISTA

Although I have IE7, my browser of choice is FireFox. RARELY use the IE7.

Ad Aware 2007 is my anti spyware program (used LavaSoft for years) I use my local ISP provider's McAfee "Postini" to filter my email for any virus/spam. WildBlue satellite has just become available to me. But still use dialup occasionally.

Hi guys. I've spent this morning testing some AV's with Malware Hub samples, tweaking settings for better protection. I usually use Emsisoft Internet Security, but lastly i'm a bit concerned about its detection and protection against new malware. I have experience with ESET and Kaspersky, but i was looking for a lighter solution, not too bloated. I was a bit surprised, when i tested Avast with Jack's Maximum Protection Guide, that the results were near perfect in all samples i ran on Malware Hub, while other suites, as ESET, Avira or Emsisoft, had worse results. Now, i'm running Avast Free and i wonder what components do you have installed and what cons have you found in a regular use of this AV.

If u want a bloatfree avast just install web and realtime shield. u dont need more to have the core protection moduls and for maximum security. i dont use it anymore but found no cons, it is realy light, one of the stablest av u can have and realy good protection if u tweak it abit. nothing wrong with using avast if someone of my family want a av, i always recomment avast because its easy and can be made to sit and forget.

Question: Avast free

Just installed Avast free Anti-virus. Looking thru this program, it looks like I need to pay for optimizing, & a lot of other things. Weak passwords ?! I should pay for them to change passwords ? Someone told me there isn't much 'free' with Avast free...'they pay for everything'.

Answer:Avast free

I moved your post from our FAQ section to the Software forum. Please pay attention to where you post. Thank you.

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.htmlI just installed it without any problem. It uninstalls ver. 4.8 automatically. I really like new interface. It much easier to navigate than the old one.

Answer:Avast 5.0 free is out

The fact it uses such little memory has been the most impressive thing I've observed thus far. The GUI is a vast (no pun intended) improvement and crucially, I trust avast to keep me out of trouble as it has done for several years now.

Question: Avast free

With latest edition of Avast free running I cannot search with google or yahoo either. I get the cannot show web page screen. At one time I could stop the web security scan and get the page...but it won't do even that now. I have put http://google.com in the exclude feature, but it does no good. I hope someone has solved this problem..thanks for your attention.

Answer:Avast free

Maybe someone can help you resolve that here but you might discover a quicker fix by visiting the support forum at Avast. I currently use Avast and find that's the best source of reporting bugs and seeking fixes or work-arounds. You can access the forums from the Avast web site or from the Avast program interface. Good luck.

Question: Avast 6 Free or..

Hey guys. I am interested in your opinion as to whether or not I should move to Avast 6 Free. It looks great, being comprehensive and supposedly lightweight. Currently I use MS Security Essentials, MalwareBytes Full (w/real-time protection), and Firefox w/NoScript. My computer has been running great without crap issues or viruses but just trying to minimize the memory footprint while maintaining protection. Also seeing if Avast would be a more simple setup for my clients rather than them using MSSE & MalwareBytes Full. All opinions welcome!

Answer:Avast 6 Free or..

Avast 6 is still in Beta, no? I'd wait till the "dust" settles before making any move, if ANY. IMO what you have now is SOLID--If it ain't broke don't fix it.

BTW, I use Avast 5 free, Mbam Free.....EVERYTHING free. I'll NEVER be forced to pay for something I can get free, and I can donate whatever I CHOOSE TO to the software creator.

I'm funny that way LOL

Which antivirus to put a bunch of SpyShelter Premium +Windows Firewall Control(binisoft) ?
Win7 x64 Other ? Thanks

Answer:BitDefender Antivirus Free vs Avast Antivirus Free vs Avira Antivirus Free

Resource Usage (eg: CPU, RAM): draw, with the indication of Avira, since BitDefender takes overall a little bit less of CPU time, but consumes much more RAM.
Level of Protection and Features (eg: Antivirus , Firewall, Behavior Blocker): Avira has more features, configuration options and is generally more effective when it comes to the malware detection (Proactive and Reactive).
Overall Winner: Avira.
Edit: I've just noticed, that you've added Avast - as the third contestant - to BitDefender and Avira. Still Avira is the winner here. Avast is not too hungry for PC resources and perhaps has more features, but its engine is not so good, and its detection ratio usually lags behind both: BitDefender and Avira.

Last night my firewall alerted me to Avast wanting give internet access to an exe file which I thought was an update of some kind for the AV software, turns out they installed their own Chrome based browser called Avast SafeZone Browser. This would have installed silently without my permission if my firewall didn't alert me. WTF?

Answer:Avast installed their own web browser without permission

Hmm, thanks for the heads-up. I seriously will look into this. If Avast are abusing their permissions, than goodbye in not dealing with them anymore.

1.) How long does it take to do a boot up scan? I selected this option to do a boot up scan, and because it took forever and a day, I prompted to cancel the scan by hitting the Esc key. I am now doing a standard scan in the background as I work here.

2.) How do I go to settings so that it does NOT scan each time that I boot up the computer? I only want to scan on demand.

3.) The speech recognition is cool, when does the software talk?

Answer:Just Installed Avast Home Some Questions?

I realise that this is an ancient post... but heck... maybe someone else has the same question...

And the answers are:

1) A loooong time!

Whenever I do a format, Avast is the first program I install after the OS!

I leave it to itself and come back around an hour later (dunno if it actually takes a full hour though).

Then I hook up to the net and download the updates and continue installing whatever program I need to install.

2) I think it does a boot scan only once... As long as you complete a boot scan at least once, it shouldn't bother you for another.

Unless of course you have detected virii and Avast thinks it prudent to do another boot scan, you shouldn't be asked every time for a boot scan.

3) I never knew it had this feature???

I love Avast

I know the file sharing sites like rapidshare, megaupload, hotfile etc. offer resume capability only to their premium/paid users. I know some leeching sites which helped me in past to have those facilities for free but for a couple of days, they aren't working anymore

Is there any other way (a download manager perhaps) which will allow me to resume my broken downloads from these sites? As far as I know leeching is completely legal & there may be some other ways to enjoy certain features without paying any bucks.

Please help

Answer:How can I download from Rapidshare/Hotfile with resume download capability for FREE?

may want to read the rules page at techguy.org/rules.html. We do not assist with torrent apps.

Closing thread.

thanks,

It wasn't free so I couldn't scan my computer. Still have blue links everywhere and popups everywhere including big ones wanting me to fill out surveys when I go to websites like Wholefoods.com. The ones connected to blue links are from "Search Assist" and this has been blasting me for going on a week now!

Answer:Suggeste free download of PC Scanner but it wasn't free

After MalwareBytes has done it's stuff use this to get shot of any nasty toolbar that you might have picked up:http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...It is not installed in the true sense, you just download the file and Save it somewhere then double click it. Run the Scan first. You then have an opportunity to read its report (log) but I have found it quite safe to run the Clean that gets shot of any junk it finds.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Avast does NOT show on windows Programs and Features. Therefore I can not uninstall it from there. I have Revo Uninstaller but it also does not show up there.

I downloaded aswClear and tried to run it in Safe Mode. Got the error message below.
I also tried to reinstall avast and got the the same error message.

What next?

Thanks

Answer:Uninstalling Avast free

See if this works ....
Download AVAST Software Uninstall Utility
Special Note: Needs to be started from Safe Mode, the program will offer to reboot you into Safe Mode on launch. If you did not install the Avast product to the default install location, you need to point to it in the box.

The title says it all. I am actually using both without issue. Well, I do have one small issue and that is that WD pops up with a message at boot up that it has not been started. I think I can fix that by going into Services and have it start automatically with a delay. But do I really need both? I am using W7-64.

Answer:Do I need Win Defender if I use Avast Free AV?

Believe it or not there are some threats that a program like Defender will catch that an Anti Virus may miss... With system security, you dont want to take any chances... Use both!

I changed my antivirus to Avast!, and was using AVG. After installing Avast! and re-booting, the stupid clicker keeps having one of those 'loading' timer things appear next to it. I think it has something to do with the antivirus, or my system. If anyone has had this problem or knows how to end it, because it;s REALLY getting on my nerves, advice is gladly accepted!

Someone on chat said I might need a logfile, though I doubt it. Gonna make one and name it Avast! Problem, and link it back here.

Answer:Avast! Free For Windows Xp Pro

Do you still have AVG installed on the system? It may be the one causing the problems if so uninstall it and try downloading Avast! Again.

I am really confused!! I did a clean install and everything! I have win8 64bit. No one else with windows 8 has this problem.   . Please help me!!!! I am really confused and frustrated.  Here are more details:
-My comp is set to sleep in 30 mins of inactivity
-Avast is set to scan every Wednesday at 13:00 (1:00 PM) and has wake up comp checked
-Avast WILL scan if I set it for when I am on the comp

Answer:Problem With Avast! Free

Users have complained for years about unresponsive behavior when the computer attempts to awake from sleep. There is no universal fix solution as there have been various reasons given for this particular issue and various suggestions to correct it. If avast is not able to determine the cause, the next step is to contact the computer manufacturer via thier support or customer service web site.

I was looking at Avast! and comparing their Free vs. Pro. Both have the new anti-rootkit as and the following is what the Pro offers in addition over the Free:

Enhanced User Interface
Command-line Scanner
Defining your own antivirus tasks [whatever this means]
Working with the task results (actions on infected files)
Storing the scan results (history)
PUSH updates
Script Blocker
Virus notifications (task-based)
Task Schedule

* For those of you who run this anti-virusIs there anything that stands out warrenting the Pro over the Free? How important is having script blocking? Thanks.

Answer:Avast! Two Questions on Free vs. Pro

Free is fine.
