Touchpad settings revert to defaults randomly

Question: Touchpad settings revert to defaults randomly

I want to set the middle click button above my touchpad to be middle click (and not scroll). I do this in the control panel Hit Apply and OK, but after some time (a restart or two) it reverts back to scroll... This is extremely frustrating. Brand new computer, new drivers. Please help. Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Touchpad settings revert to defaults randomly

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Well, probably not at random, because there has to be a reason.
Lenovo S510p Touch, Windows 8.1, Synaptics TouchPad V7.5, Driver version 16.6.6.3 dated May 17, 2013. Microsoft Office 10 and no oddball software installed.
I changed the touchpad settings to ENABLE vertical scrolling and DISABLE the edge swipes function that causes the hideous Windows popups if you swipe from the left edge. Made the settings as shown in image at the bottom.
The problem is the settings revert to the defaults after a time. It's a pain to reset things several times a day. Can't find anything on the Lenovo site specific to this. Looked at the Synaptics site and they say there's probably another device driver that causes the reset. I tried disabling the touchscreen, but no help there. Too inexperienced (i.e.dumb) to know what else to try.
Ideas? Thanks!

Answer:Touchpad settings revert to defaults randomly

I have the same problem, I upgraded to v16.6.3 17may13 which didn't help at all (I may or may not have had the issue prior to upgrading).  My computer is a S510p.  All of the settings revert to factory defaults (scrolling, windows swipe, and even which icon to show in the system tray)

Hi,

I'm trying to "harden" a notebook's security by preventing un-recognised USB mass storage devices from being installed by restricting "permissions" on the USBSTOR driver service in the registry for System/Administrators/Users to "Deny".

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR

This works fine on Xp for example. However when I do this on a Vista machine and insert a "new" USB device the "Installing new device" notification popup appears, followed by a "Do you want Windows to find the device driver..." type dialogue - if I click yes to this the device installs normally and the permissions for the service in the registry as set back to default.

This is a single user (administrator) on a notebook running Vista HP SP2.

Can anyone explain this behaviour and if there's a workaround?

Cheers

Try using the Windows Phone Recovery Tool on your computer. It can be found under Microsoft Phone Support. Just make sure you backup first of course!

Hi, I am having a problem where my trackpoint settings are not being kept. Every couple of days I need to go back to the control panel and readjust the sensitivity of the trackpoint leading me to believe that this happens when the machine either goes to sleep or is shut down. The driver is up to date and I am using the T400 machine. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers

Thanks for showing me where to download the right Windows 7 touchpad driver. Now I have a problem. The touchpad disappeared when I restarted my computer. The computer still recognizes a PS2 mouse which is not attached. I think it's doing it by default. How can I stop this from happening?

I have a Gigabyte board and an xp1800 processor, by default when I turn pc on it reports the chip as an 1150 mhz. I can then crank it up in the bios to 1550(ish) correct settings for an xp1800. But every time I reboot the pc it drops back down to 1150 mhz.

I cant see that it is anything wrong with my BIOS battery, as my windows clock never loses a second.

Any ideas?

BTW I am using a 250watt psu as oppose to 300, could this be the cause?

My computer always runs out of memory and I barely have anything saved on it. It runs out of memory just by being on. I want to revert to the manufacturers settings. I did it once with help from tech support when it was under warranty. Now the warrenty is expired and they won't tell me again without a large fee. Does anyone know how to free up memory or revert to the manufacturers settings?  Thank you!

Answer:Windows 98 revert to old settings??

I have just returned a faulty Graphics Card to the supplier and am waiting for a replacement. In the meantime I am using the motherboards monitor output. This has been working fine except for the aspect ratio which though annoying was adequate. Now my son has tried to rectify this and i have lost my picture. He said he disabled the display adaptor. I now get the boot screens and the Windows page then it goes black. I believe the computer has booted up correctly but i cant enable the display without a picture. I am quite a novice so as simple as possible answers would be appreciated.

Answer:how to revert to old display settings

Ig he disabled it, you need to restore it. When the computer first boots up, look at the screen and note which key you need to hit to enter the BIOS setup. When you get into the bios, look for the setting related to onboard video and if it's disabled, enable it. Save the settings and exit. Keep the kid off the computer.

On occasion, for no apparent reason, my screen will rotate to any orientation. I have to put it into, and out of, sleep mode in order to get the orientation back to where needed. Also, on occasion, for no apparent reason, I lose the ability to use my touchpad and keyboard, and need to use the touchscreen in order to do anything. I also need to put it into, and out of, sleep mode in order to regain use of the touchpad and keyboard.  I've updated all software and drivers out of frustration, but nothing has helped. Help!!

I purchased the HP K201na laptop and have upgraded to Windows 10. The problem is that the touchpad driver has a bug in Windows 10.   The default option is 'Enable reverse scrolling direction' and when you  UN-TICK it, it works for your current session, however after rebooting your machine, it reverts back to being ticked.Additionally, if you put the shortcut in the notification area in the bottom right, then reboot, it disappears from here too. It seems like the driver needs updating as this is extremely frustrating.

Because the advanced appearance settings in win10 were omitted I manually tweaked the registry. After log off or reboot they (the registry) assume the default state. Now I'm pretty desperate and in fragile mental condition. But I'm here now and know that You'll came up with a solution. P.S. Please forgive my unbearable use of english article.

Using XPPro, I'll open a folder expecting to see a list with details for files contained in the folder. Instead I see icons.

Sometimes in Explorer I expect to see previously selected views only to see default views.

And so on. This make me think that some in the Registry, a specific number of display settings are allowed and when you go beyond that number the newest setting is stored and the earliest setting returns to default.

True? If so, how do I increase the number.

Thanks in advance, Joe

Answer:Display settings revert to default

my sis ( who's a state away from me at the moment ) has a p.c. thats only a few months old, it has XP Home and a decent amount of memory on it... she went with her husband a few days ago to purchase a new p.c. for him (as he fried his puter) and asked about virus protection.... she was talked into getting Norton 2005 though she asked for something else... long story short.. since installing Norton she has had puter issues... most recently (and most troublesome at the moment) is that her display is VERY, VERY LARGE ! She has gone into Settings and changed the pixels to 1152 X 864 and reboots, but it comes back bigger than life and when she goes back to display settings it is set at 640 X 480 pixels, and the color set at 8.... what's up?

My PC was fine really, but then i accidently change the display graphics settings, and now I find that computer gets as far as the WIndows XP Logo on start up and then a hanging black screen occurs, even though windows has definately loaded up and is running in the background (the keyboard and mouse are functioning, altho they're not visible).

I want to try to revert the display setting back to how they were before. For some reason , It wont boot in safe mode now either! when i click on Boot in safe mode after F8, it just comes up with a list of about 20 different random directories , and then nothing else happens!:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\ACPI.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\WMILIB.sys
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\pci.sys
etc etc.

please advise How I can get into safe mode or manage to visibly see windows to revert my graphic display settings back to default.

Hope to hear from you soon.
Thankyou

Alex

Answer:How can I revert Graphic Display settings?

Try this:

1. shut down your computer & unplug the power cord from the back
2. open the computer and safely remove the graphics card (there will be a little clip you need to push to remove so be careful)
3. wait around 2 minutes
4. insert the card again and boot.

can you load windows now?
hope this helps! if not write back!

As the title suggests, every time I restart or shutdown and log back on, a lot, if not all of my changed settings are reverted. About 5 weeks back, I ran into some virus trouble that I fixed, or so I thought. Most of the symptoms vanished when I cleaned the mess up, except this one. It's not a huge deal, bt any means but it is becoming *very* annoying to have to rejigger everything back into it's proper place.

I have been using a Logitech "Comfort laser" wireless keyboard and mouse for years. Recently the mouse has been acting up, so I purchased a Logitech M505 wireless mouse (original replacement parts are NOT available from Logitech!) in case it failed completely. Yesterday that happenned. After I installed the new mouse receiver (USB, not PS2 like the original) I discovered that everytime I reboot the "swap buttons"  feature (I nust use my left hand as my right hand no longer works) has reset. How do I get the mouse buttons to be properly left-hand oriented when I turn on my computer?I do click "APPLY" after setting the mouse up. I have tried both the windows mouse setup and Logitech's mouseware/Setpoint setups. I found I actually need both because I also usr a Remote Wonder 2 from ATI and I need it's mouse click buttons to remain reversed as well.Any thought would be appreciated,Eric T.

Current OS running? Download Mike Lin's Startup CPL. Click on Standalone EXE Version(34 kb). After downloading(folder or desktop), extract the file and open(run) the program. Look for any "logitech files only" and uncheck. Click Apply then Exit. If it did'nt work, uninstall and install the driver or update latest driver for mouse(if any).

Hello,

I signed up for a DNS service a while back. When I stopped using their service I removed their DNS entry from the ipv4 settings and considered it done (this was all they stated for install/uninstall, just update the DNS in ipv4)

At random, the PC will revert back to their DNS server. I have no virus (Malewarebytes Pro), my hosts file is empty. The company has zero idea how to fix this problem and it's like listening to a broken record (19 emails back/forth) with their tech support.

Here's what I've done:

1) Removed it from ipv4 settings manually and reset to Obtain DNS Automatically
2) Open cmd as admin and ran the following sequence:
ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

netsh winsock reset

netsh int ip reset

3) Reboot

On reboot, everything is normal, anywhere from 24 hours to 30 DAYS later it automatically reverts back to their DNS servers. I am on a .edu domain. I do not have access to the router, but I never modified anything in the router. Can anyone please provide a suggestion as to why my PC keeps reverting to their DNS servers?

Answer:ipv4 settings revert automatically, how can I stop this?

So the ipconfig /flushdns command isn't working either? Sounds like this DNS server messed with the host file or something.

The following link shows more methods for flushing the DNS.

Hi,

I have searched for a long time for the solution to a problem I have been having, but the related posts are all about 2 years old. In January I bought a new computer and configured it specifically for music production... a dedicated DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) running WinXP 32 bit, sp2. I set my display settings to Windows Classic and set the computer to not display anything fancy other than smooth edged fonts. I turned all system sounds off so nothing would beep while recording. I stopped all non-Microsoft services and startup tasks via msconfig, freeing up the majority of my memory for use with the high demands of audio processing.

This configuration worked for about a month until either the machine automatically downloaded a Windows Update or I installed Windows Media Player 10. (My issue may not be the result of either of those things though.) Now, every time I reboot or shutdown and power the computer back on, the display settings revert to the XP baby blue task bar, the sounds come back on, and under My Computer - Properties -> Advanced Tab -> Performance Settings, the check box next to "Use visual styles on windows and buttons" is checked.

Any ideas on what's going on?

Answer:XP Display and Sound Settings Revert after Shutdown

I guess nobody knows anything about this issue? It's pretty annoying having to reset my theme and sound settings each time I start up the computer.

The "control" computers (DCM, RIP, PCC and the Kiosks) all run turnkey proprietary software. With previous versions of windows that I have used (2000, XP & Seven) settings never changed after an update, but after Win10 updates, I am finding every computer has its network settings reset to "password protected sharing turned on". When this happens, the DCM wont talk to the Kiosks, or the PCC, RIP, and Lab workstations (which also won't talk to each other). While the Lab computers can simply have their settings changed on the fly, I have to disable the turnkey systems by removing their hardlock keys so that the software doesn't start, then change the network settings then shut it down and reinsert the hardlock key and repeat the procedure for all the Kiosks and control computers before rebooting the entire system. It takes about about 60-90 minutes to get up and running after a Win 10 update.

Is there any thing I can to do stop this from happening?

NOTE:
DCM = Digital Control Module, a server for the Kiosks
PCC = Printer Control Computer
RIP = Raw Image Processor, a computer that runs a commercial photo printer

Why do the display settings only in my profile reset themselves back to a lower level each time I log-in to my desktop? I have to right click on the desktop and reset the "display mode" to "true color", 1024x768. and then everything displays fine for that work session. Hope someone can help, I've been scouring Windows knowledge base and other forums.

Answer:Display settings revert back to low quality?

Was this always a problem or something new. If new did it start after you installed anything?

I imagine this is a known issue: I use the desktop view more than the tile view. I set the desktop icon view to "small" and arrange them the way I like. somewhere in the next boot cycle or two, the view reverts to where it was before I tried to arrange it MY way.
is there a cure?

Alright, so get this: if I try and change the brightness settings in the Nvidia control panel, after moving the slider to darker or lighter, the screen will immediately adjust back to a standard brightness. This happens in games too. I'll find an area too dark and change the in game brightness and bam, it just reverts back. The thing is, the slider doesn't jump back or anything, the computer just adapts the new brightness so that it looks like the standard. Here are a couple of screenshots to visualize my rambling. Notice the gamma settings and the fact that regardless of which setting I chose, the screenshot brightness is literally exactly the same. This is not a monitor issue because 1) I've turned off all adaptive measures on my TV and 2) those are screenshots, they would not display the monitor settings.

My computer had Windows 8 and everything was fine. After installed Windows 8.1, it screwed up my graphics card settings on my PC and I'm having graphical glitches with some of my programs. I did not have such problems when I had Windows 8. I was told, I have to reset my graphics card settings to the defaults that come with original Windows 8. In other words, I have to set the graphics card to what it was on Windows 8, and all graphics glitches would disappear. However, I'm such a "noob" and I'm entriely clueless how to perform this operation. I want a step-by-step guide from a professional.

Answer:Help: How to set graphics card settings to Win 8 defaults.

Our facility has deployed whole hard disk encryption to all laptops.  This program initiates a preboot login screen.  Customers on Docking stations would like that preboot authentication screen to appear on their external displays. I have update their BIOS, installed the latest Nvidia drivers and set their bios from "Nvidia Optimum" to "Discreet"Then I set the display to "dock 1"Press F10, save, reboot and everthing works. Customer removes laptop from docking station and brings it home.  There is no docking station at home so the laptop's LCD is all there is. Customer returns with laptop to work in the morning, drops it in the docking station and boots up.  The preboot screen is still on the laptop.  The end result is the BIOS has to be accessed every morning to make it boot to the external display. What is changing the BIOS back from what I set it to?  How do I force it to stick?

When I change "Use the following DNS server addresses:" under: Network connections -> Properties -> Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and try to set it to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS), press OK and close, settings are saved but revert back to "Obtain DNS server address automatically" after less than a minute.

Many thanks in advance

I have found the solution - it was a VPN software called Tunnel Bear I had installed on my computer.
See the following thread discussing it (But I could not find it before as it relates to firewall settings)

OK I'm not sure what happened but I'll try and explain. So last night I shut down my computer like normal and this morning I started up the computer like normal and it looked like everything was fine. The swirling windows logo showed up like it should but right after that it said windows is preparing to start a new session or something along those lines.

After logging in it seemed everything was set to default, all my programs and files were there but everything was reset. When I clicked on the start button you usually get a list of recently used programs above the list all programs button but there was nothing there. Also the task bar was empty as well. I did a restore and it seemed to fix the problem but I'm just wondering why it would do that just right out of the blue. Thanks for taking the time to help me out.

Hi Lusankya, did you sign in with a new or different User Account than previously?
That would give you the initial windows settings rather than any customizations you made which are often specific to an account.

I have recently switched ISP's (dial-up to cable modem). In doing so, there was no pop-up blocker for the new service. I had a crap-load of adware and sypware on my computer. I dl'd, updated, and ran the following: Ad-Adware SE, Spybot S&D, Spyware Blaster, CWShredder, and Clean-It. I have always had Norton and LiveUpdate runs automatically. The computer was running slow, so I also did a Disk cleanup and defrag. I should also mention that when Norton was finding ad-/spy-ware, I was having trouble getting one program to delete (even in safe mode it wouldn't go) and I ran regedit and messed with stuff. I may have screwed up something in there. (I also ctrl+alt+del and ended some processes if I didn't recognize what they were for.) PROBLEM: Sometimes, when I reboot, my start menu, folder options, desktop, etc. all go back to default, but not every reboot. Also, I use Microsoft Money. It wouldn't open and since there was no uninstall, I removed it using Add/Remove Programs. Where it tells you the last time you used the program it said 6/14/04, which isn't true. Not sure what's going on, but I removed the program, deleted all the old Money files and reinstalled it. Still not working. Double click on the icon, plays money's startup music, and there's a rectangle in the middle of the screen with the money logo, but it never actually goes into the program. When I open a new window (Internet Explorer) and then minimize it, that rectangle stays whatever was in the window I just had... Read more

Thank you so much for these tutorials that are posted on this site, there a great help. I have a nagging thought, and it is my hope that someone can put it to rest. Is it possible that sometimes, Vista or even browsers of any kind can revert back, say... after a modification is made to the registry? Lets use one of my favorites... 35. Change the Maximum Download Sessions in Internet Explorer or all Browsers, I would think not, for it would defeat the whole purpose of the tweak. But sense I'm a crawling baby in the world of computers, I had to ask.

Thanks,
Todd

Answer:Can Vista or browsers revert back to default settings after a shutdown.

Welcome Todd,

It would be real easy to give a simple yes or no, but that may not be the correct answer in every situation. I never thought of that scenario and never had a problem, but why take a chance. Download and use this to make an image of your Hard Drive, in the event of the situation that you mentioned ocurring or something worse, you have the image to fall back on.

Free Backup Software: Paragon Backup & Recovery Free Edition - Overview

Keep it up to date and you will always have a good image to fall back on, regarless of the problem.

I know you folks must have heard this one already.

When I try to customize my font size display settings (see attached), they revert back to default after a reboot.

I did a fresh install of Win 10, and this was the first thing I checked, just to make sure nothing was interfering with it.

I hoping there is some way to deal with this, even maybe a third party tool?

Answer:Windows 10 font size display settings revert back

It came along with the latest roll out. Only way to make it permanent is to use the Registry edit.

Hello. I know how to use 'Change Only the Text Size' (in the Control Panel's Display applet) to make certain elements larger and/or bolder, and this works fine on one of my 2 PCs. But on the other, the setting lasts only for the current session. At each reboot they're all back to unbolded 9pt, which for me is so small and faint it's almost comically useless.

Both PCs are running Win 10 Pro, both are recent (though non-identical) Dell desktops, and both are used for very similar -- and mundane -- tasks. What on earth could be making one of them lose its settings at each boot?

Note: This isn't a case of the settings being grayed out. I know the drill there -- I don't have a custom scaling level set.

Many thanks for any clues.

Mark

I've maintained an XAMPP localhost on my machine for web development for years and never had any real problem with it. Fairly recently (within the last two or three months, I believe), the services for both Apache and MySQL always revert to a Startup Type of Manual on reboot. Each time, I dutifully go in and reset the Startup Type to Automatic and start the services. Everything is fine until the next reboot. Then, I find that neither Apache nor MySQL are running because the Startup Type has reverted to Manual. So, I do the same thing all over again. I must have reset the two services to Automatic at least a thousand times. They always revert to Manual.

This has never happened before. Is there a way:

To prevent them from reverting to Manual, effectively making Automatic "stick" orFailing that, write a batch file to circumvent whatever Microsoft has done and reset the Startup Type on reboot?

I just know that the Microsoft software engineers spend many a sleepless night figuring out new and creative ways to make Windows less usable and more inefficient. Aparently, they strike again!

Hey all, I have a W520 with a Nvidia quadro 2000m. I have a 2nd monitor connected with a native resolution of 1366x768 which I use to Extend my desktop. The main monitor is my laptops screen which has 1920x1080. Every time I reboot my computer I can see the windows logon screen and I still have the high resolution on my main laptop screen for a few seconds. After that the 2nd monitor connected switches on and my main laptop monitor switches back to the native 1366x768 resolution from the 2nd monitor and also it doesn't extend but clone my desktop. I have to manually correct it in the Nvidia control panel every time I boot. I installed the newest Nvidia drivers from the Nvidia site without result. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:W520 Dual display settings revert to low resolution in win logon

It seems the display setting are not getting save.

You may check with creating the different user account and if the issue persist then update the BIOS

Do you have logitech mouse driver installed?   If so, the culprit is KHALMNPR.EXE loaded at startup.   Run MSCONFIG, startup tab, sort by MFG and untick that entry.

I got a Logitech MX?620 Cordless Laser Mouse, on sale for $30 in a Sam's Club this weekend.Logitech makes nice mice, this one is cordless. A very small dongle plugs into a USB port on my T41, (Win XP, SP2).I downloaded and installed Logitech's SetPoint 4.60 software, Logitech's driver for the mouse. They have two other things to download and install associated with this mouse, Logitech® Connection Utility and Logitech® Desktop Messenger.  I didn't know what the other two software does, so I didn't download either one.The settings for the Mouse, controlled in the SetPoint dialog boxes seem to affect and interfer with the T41 TouchPad's settings. I don't see the exact cause and effect, hence this post. It seems when if I set up a comfortable setting for the mouse, for acceleration and pointer speed, then the touchpad settings are lowered (acceleration and speed are lowered), to the point of being uncomfortably slow.  Then if I modify settings via the ThinkPad UltraNav Wizard (ver 3.05), to speed up the speed or acceleration, the Logitech mouse's speed and acceleration are slowed down.  It seems to be a never ending game, set up one device, and the settings on the other device get changed.  Does anyone know why this is, or have a fix for it?A further note, I've used generic USB mice, the $10 corded kind that plug into a USB port, and have never had this problem.  So the Logitech SetPoint driver/software is the different from using generic mice. ... I seem to be having issues finding more extensive settings for my new Yoga 710 - there are some settings under Mouse Properties > Device Settings > Synaptics Clickpad V1.6 on SMB Port > Settings but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of setting areas of the trackpad. There are two things that I want to achieve: 1. Enable scrolling by scrolling on the right hand side of the touchpad (single finger scroll) 2. Disable the touchpad where the left/right click buttons are. I often hover over these buttons and it disables/moves the mouse - I need them to function as buttons, not as a trackpad/button combo (also can make clicking and dragging awkward?). Thanks heaps

Hi Guys,

I'm getting quite frustrated with this issue and wondering if anyone has seen it, and able to resolve the issue. The issue is I have a network printer selected as the default in Windows 10. I have the option "Let Windows manage my default printer" turned off. At one point randomly, the default printer goes back to the Adobe PDF as the default.

Steps taken:

* I have checked the registry settings to ensure that the options "let Windows manage my default printer" is switched off. I can confirm this.
* Switched the default printer back to the network printer and performed a reboot. The network printer remains as the default. At some point of the day it goes back to Adobe PDF.
* Had a Microsoft support dude to look at the issue, but he has no idea either.

A few of my pilot users has also experience the same issue. Any ideas anyone?

bios default is normal setting in terms of speed, high performance is faster, but the reason it is faster is it will not only make your system start with high setting (sometimes it won't work due to the other parts on your system, for example RAM) and it will also neglect some of the tests it will run on normal setting (like memory test)

try to run it in high perform to see if your system able to run it, then it really depends on your taste if you want the system to run those test every time it boot

I am back home for the holidays and brought my desktop back with me that runs Windows 7. After I got it all set up I realized I could not access the internet, and that I was connected to an "Unidentified Network". After looking into it more I found that I was getting a 169.XXX.XX.XX IP, and I was unable to renew it. After searching the internet for a while I found many people with similar problems and tried many things that were suggested such as

"Clean Boot", by making sure that Norton and Bonjour, which apparently can cause these problems, were disabled at startup
Updating the Drivers on my network adapter
Reinstall the network adapter
Reset the router and modem
switched out ethernet cables
Set my own IP
Tried to do a system restore (whole restore failed, tried to update then lost all my past restore points)
Tried starting in safe mode and safe mode with networking, neither worked.
and finally restoring my computer to factory settings (Windows Vista), which I thought would fix it but did not, leaving me with very little hope.

Nothing really changed between it working and not working, and all the other computers on the network still work.

I have what I consider slightly above average understanding on the software side of things, and limited when it comes to hardware. So I'll probably need an explanation of what to do. This computer is barely two years old.

HELP!

Answer:"Unidentified Network" revert to factory settings did not fix.

Build 14971 - When computer is booted, it boots to the desktop. However, after a period of inactivity (maybe 15 minutes or so), it changes from the desktop to the "Settings" page. While it is only a minor problem, it irritates me to not find the desktop on the screen. This never happened in previous builds of Win 10, only 14971.

I should note that in "Power Options" in the "Control Panel", I have set my Power Plan as "High Performance", and have set the computer to "Never" turn off the display and to "Never" put the computer to sleep. I do not know if this is related to my problem, but mention it if it is.I also looked at other "Settings" and could find nothing that should cause this activity.

Your ideas and solutions will be appreciated..

Answer:After period of inactivity, computer defaults to "Settings" screen

This is a known issue with build 14971. Extract from release notes (Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14971 for PC - Windows 10 Forums):

Known issues for PC

Navigating to Settings > System > Battery will crash the Settings app.Using keyboard monitor hotkeys to adjust brightness won?t work as expected. Desired brightness change could be done via the Action Center or by going to Settings > System > Display.Apps such as Store, Photos, and People may launch on their own after your PC has been inactive for a period of time. To stop these apps from launching on their own, un-maximize the app before closing it.As we have previously announced we are working on the Windows Holographic Shell that is going to be included in the upcoming Windows 10 Creators Update. In today?s flight you will see the Windows Holographic First Run app. While you will be able to launch the app and walk through the first few screens, it won?t detect any hardware. This app and the Windows Holographic Shell is still under active development here at Microsoft and with our partners.

Although Settings app is not specifically mentioned in highlighted part above, it's a UWP app too and this applies to it.

Hello,
When I press Restore Settings button in BIOS setting (through F2 when Dell logo is displayed at booting) then the dialog with two options is shown:

BIOS Defaults
Factory Settings

What is the difference about these two options (BIOS Defaults vs. Factory Settings) please?
Thank you.

For the past couple of weeks, the touchpad and keyboard on my laptop have either been shutting down randomly at different times or dont work at all when I start up. Sometimes both work, sometimes only my keyboard works, and then sometimes only my keyboard will work amd than eventually it will shut down too.I just want to know what could be causing this and if I can fix it on my own. I never had a problem like this before.

Hi! T420 touchpad dies and trackpoint keeps on working. Sometimes after some time the trackpoint may also die. After boot, touchpad & trackpad recovers and is working maybe for an hour, or a day. Then it reoccurs. This happens randomly on some T420's, while other T420's doesnt encounter it never-ever. Any tips how to troubleshoot this one? Ran Lenovo PC Doctor and everything is fine, also cant find anything suspicious in Windows logs. Thanks in advance!

Answer:T420 touchpad dies randomly

Hi eskoj

Try to run System Update and update all BIOS and drivers to see if the problems persist.

The touchpad stops working randomly when the computer is woken back from sleep and it has to be rebooted to get it going agin. An externally connected mouse will work fine during that time. Is this due to a possibly faulty touchpad??

Answer:The touchpad on my V3-331 stops working randomly.

Hi Jithin1,

It is possible to be a defective touchpad. I would suggestion a few things you can try on your own before looking into service options.

Update or reinstall touchpad drivers
Refresh the PC to see if that takes care of any issues.
Reload the PC entirely if possible

If you continue having issues, contact your local Acer support team so that they can help setup services to take care of the touchpad issues you're having.

For reference, my laptop is running the pre-installed Windows 8.1 OS.    I got the laptop about a month ago, and it's had this problem seemingly at least once every few days or once a week, and has been going on since I took it out of the box. The tap-to-click seems to end up sticking making it as if I am holding it down to highlight or click & drag until eventually the cursor freezes, and nothing except restarting my laptop will stop it from doing that.     I don't have the "Device Settings" tab in "Mouse Properties" in Control Panel (there is no "Touchpad properties") where I would think I could change something like palm sensitivity or edge scroll or something. "Mouse Properties" shows that it's using Microsoft drivers for it from 2006, and in Device Manager, the only device under "Mouse and Pointing Devices" is "HID-compliant Mouse", which seems to be the same thing from Control Panel.    I was told to install the Synaptics Touchpad Driver, but it did nothing. I found it under Human Interface Devices as "Synaptics HID Device", but it neither upgraded the driver, nor did it show anything for a touchpad in the "Mouse and Pointing Devices", though it did show that it went through the process in the events tab of the Synaptics, it just isn't using the new driver.    I went back to Acer Support and they said that I'd have to either do a Factory Reset (which is an issue because I don't know what happened to cause this in th... There as a thread on this but I'm posting a new on because that one is marked as solved, but it is not solved, the solution accepted there is a non-solution as far as I'm concerned (uninstall Ultranav and install software from Synaptics). The issue is, with touchpad enabled, and tapping disabled, at random intervals, it reenables itself. This is extremely annoying, especially as the tapping is so very sensitive and has no sensitivity adjustment, so one suddenly finds oneself accidentally performing actions as unintended click events happen. It is extremely random. Sometime months will pass without it reenabling itself. Other times it starts happening every day or so, and then will revert to behaving itself for another couple months. Docking and undocking seem to make it worse. Sometimes it seems it happens on unsleeping, but not always.  I have a T61, running Windows XP SP3. This problem has happened for me as long as I've had this laptop, over a year, and across a number of UltraNav updates (as other system updates...I generally keep major components updated like BIOS, Powermanager, and Ultranav). PLEASE fix this, it's driving me nuts! Thanks, Eric

Answer:Touchpad tapping renables itself randomly

Similar problem - R61 on XP/SP3, Touchpad reactivates itself after "standby" and has now started to reactivate itself randomly.   Really really irritating.  I never use the Touchpad but there is no way to totally disable it.

The mouse cursor is either restricted to just moving vertically up and down or it randomly moves itself all over the place. NOT a virus or malware causing it, I've checked it thoroughly. Is it fixable or do I have to get another complete palm rest and touch pad part? Which of course would be used and possibly have the same failure. Just got done putting it back together from taking the keyboard and display off to tighten all the hinge screws. The right hinge inside the lid was just about to come loose completely. Now it's nearly tight as new. While I had it apart I disconnected and reconnected the touch pad cable, hoping it might just be a bad connection there. No change.

I bought a brand new laptop from Dell.  The touchpad kept crashing (it won't respond to taps and sometimes stops scrolling, but the right and left click continue to work).  After several months of calling tech support, having the laptop serviced remotely, and sending it in twice for repairs, all without success, Dell sent me a new computer.  After only four days, the same thing is now happening with the new one.  Now Dell says that means the problem is on my end.
I haven't downloaded any new programs, everything is up-to-date, and when I check the touchpad settings, it shows everything as being enabled.  The touchpad stops working randomly, on different websites and in different programs.  I never had this problem on any previous Dell laptops.  I can't think what I might be doing to cause this issue.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, On my Travelmate B115 (that I've barely used at all), the touchpad randomly stops working. If I deactivate it and activate it (Fn+F7 twice) it starts working again, but I have to do that once every two minutes, and it's really annoying. Sometimes it also is very slow or imprecise in its movements, and it seems sometimes that it clicks without my wanting it to (it could be that I'm grazing the pad without noticing sometimes, but I'm really writing "in the air" with only my fingers touching the computer's keys now to avoid it, and it still happens).I am extremely frustrated since this laptop is brand new. Can anyone help me?Elisabeth

Answer:Touchpad randomly stops working

Exactly the same problem. Just emailed Acer and told me to reset the laptop. I did it and the same problem. Now, directly they don't answer my email.

Hello,

I have a very annoying problem:
My touch pad is deactivating and activating itself all the time. As if i would constantly press fn+f9 (several times in a row). I had this problem before but it just stopped. It seems the problem occurs more often when using the keyboard.
And the small on/off-Button doesn't seem to work.
I cleaned the keyboard and removed the F9-button in case but the only result was that I can't put it back as it won't stay in position...

please help me. I can barely use the keyboard as I am constantly interrupted by the touch pad on/off-message.

cheers,
kashel

Hey guys.

I have never had this problem before so I don't know what to do.

While on my laptop my touchpad will randomly stop moving. I can still zoom in and out by pinching, I can right click and left click, but I cannot move the pointer . As soon as I plug in my mouse, the touchpad works again. I can unplug the mouse and it will still work for a few minutes then the problem will happen again.

I'm running windows 7 64bit,

I also have not installed anything recently.

Answer:Touchpad randomly stops working.

See if reinstalling the touchpad driver from the laptop's manufacturer's website helps.

I have a new G50-80 that has a strange touchpad issue. Randomy the touchpad will respond sluggishly or not at all. At other times using the touchpad will cause web pages and the like to resize, as if I was using two fingers. The tray icon also shows two or more pressure indicators when the touchpad is playing up. What is the best course of action? I have already tried updating the touchpad drivers with no success.

Answer:New G50-80 touchpad randomly not functioning correctly

Try to decrease sensibility to touch in the mousepad driver options.....

I have a Dell Inspiron 15-5547 running Win 8.1. Every now and then the scroll feature (two fingers vertical swipe to scroll the screen), and the two finger tap for right click, will stop working. When this happens, all the other features on the touchpad seem to work. If I restart the laptop it starts working again. I've tried going into services.msc and setting 'Human Interface Devices" to automatic startup, but it doesn't help. There's something else pretty weird also... When I go into the system tray (lower right), right click the touchpad icon, and select Touchpad Properties, it takes me into the Dell Pointing Devices windows. Inside this window, there is a sliding switch to disable the touchpad. When I disable it, the touchpad still works. Weird. Does anybody have any ideas how I can get this sorted out. I'm also using a wireless USB mouse on the same laptop, not sure if that makes a difference. Thanks.

Answer:Touchpad scroll dies randomly

Hi Jools

Personally I would look to see what touchpad driver version you are using and then either update it with an in-place update, or uninstall (my favourite option, then install new driver) the current driver and then re-install, as it may just be a slight corruption.

Latest driver HERE
Also a thought, when the touchpad stops with the scroll feature, had your laptop been left not used for a period of time, like hibernation?

Greetings. Under what conditions would one want to load either 1) Bios Setup
Defaults and/or 2) Bios Defaults???? Also, does loading the bios defaults
remove the flash update and take bios back to original settings??

Curious for good reason,
-M

Answer:Bios Defaults/Setup Defaults

You would want to load setup defaults if you screwed up the settings in the bios.

No, it does not undo a flash.

Minor issue - but annoying....I like to use the touchpad to move the mouse, but I don't like the 'tap to click' feature, so I uncheck the 'enable tapping' option in the UltraNav mouse driver. Life is good. Then ... every few days ... after I wake my computer (I am lucky and don't need to reboot often .... I usually put the computer to sleep when moving the computer)....  I find the the touchpad is acting as a 'mouse click' and when I go into Mouse control panel, I see that 'enable tapping' has a check mark ("tick" in English-English). I then uncheck this box, and everything works fine for a few days.I haven't been able to identify any specific action that causes this ... and the timing can be every couple of days ... then once every 2-3 weeks.Any ideas?

Answer:Touchpad 'enable tapping' randomly gets turned on

I have a w500 and experience a similar issue. I set the Ultranav to Tracpoint only and in a day or two both tracpoint and touchpad are active. My conclusion is it's an Ultranav driver issue. I may roll back the driver and see if it fixes things.

Ever since I've upgraded my dad's laptop to Windows 10, the keyboard and touchpad stop working randomly, and would work only after I restart the computer. (logging off, switch user, standby mode doesn't resolve it.)
There is no pattern to it. Sometimes it would be ok for a few days, sometimes it would happen again after a few hours. I mostly do internet browsing on the laptop.

When the problem occurred:
- The keyboard AND the touchpad would both stop working at the same time.
- USB mouse still works. (I do not have an external keyboard to test)
- The lights on the keys themselves (eg caps lock, wifi) would still remain on if they're activated but cannot be toggled on/off as usual.
- The device manager still showed no problems with the mouse or keyboard.

Things I've tried:
- sfc /scannow
- disabled sticky keys
- used the generic drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- reinstalled the drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- updated to the latest synaptics driver
- made a new synaptics trackpad profile
- disabled touchpad when using the USB mouse

Laptop stats:
HP Pavillion dm1-4002AU
Windows 10 Home 64bit (upgraded from Win7 and then reset to a fresh state)
AMD Radeon HD 6230 Graphics
6GB RAM
Synaptics Driver Version: 19.0.12.95 06Jul15
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad
Lenovo ThinkPad PS/2 keyboard

This is very exasperating. I would appreciate some help in stopping this problem permanently, thanks.

Has anyone experienced this? In UltraNav the reverse scrolling isn't checked but sometiems it just starts scrolling reverse (i.e. cycle fingers up to scroll down and vice versa). The only way I can fix it is to actually go and enable reverse scrolling, and then disable reverse scrolling. I did have to remove the keyboard when I was adding RAM, but pretty sure the touchpad is separate from the keyboard. I do have the latest drivers.

Sometimes when I start up my computer, more often than not, when it brings me to my logon screen, I can't use the touchpad or the keyboard at all.  I have to physically touch the screen to let me put my pin in.  Still, neither work, so I end up shutting down and restarting, sometimes more than once, before the touchpad and keyboard start to work again.  I've had this problem for a couple of years now, have been in touch with support, and have also uninstalled and reinstalled my keyboard.  My warranty just expired of course.  I'm ready to throw this computer out of a window.
