Win 10 Pro Start Menu - Changes to LayoutModification.xml not applied

Question: Win 10 Pro Start Menu - Changes to LayoutModification.xml not applied

I have ~ 200 machines here on our domain, all running windows 10 Pro. We have configured a custom start menu using by exporting LayoutModification.xml and applying this through Group Policy. It has always been slightly problematic in that some users see some tiles and others don't, there's no rhyme or reason to which work consistently. I've made a change to this file to add a new tile, applied this to the .xml file and saved to the location the GPO points to.
On updating group policy or even manually using Import-StartLayout through PowerShell it simply WILL NOT make this change to any machines.
Current build on our clients is 1607 and we're using Server 2012 R2 on our DCs and FP server.
I've been through MULTIPLE threads on various forums and tried various means to get this applying, even going so far as to creating a new GPO that effects only TEST users. These test users get the start menu applying but NOT the new group and tile in question.
This is an essential shortcut for a new tool we're pushing out to the business ad I've been looking at this for hours, any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an odd problem with Enterprise Mode on a Windows 10 Pro 64-bit Lenovo X1, fully up to date via Windows Update. Browser reports itself as being Version 11.0.10240.16431, Update Versions 11.0.22 (KB3078071).
I've enabled the mode via group policy and the option now appears on the Alt-T Tools menu as expected. However when I click to select it the menu closes as expected but nothing else happens - page isn't re-rendered, no blue icon appears on the address bar.
Clicking Tools menu again, there's no check mark next to Enterprise Mode.  I've also created a site list and enabled / referenced this through group policy, but this doesn't activate Enterprise Mode for sites on the list either. Checking the registry,
all the expected keys and values are present.
If I use F12 tools I can go to the emulation tab and select "Enterprise" from the Browser Mode drop down - now my page is rendered in Enterprise Mode complete with the blue icon.

I've got Enterprise mode working fine on another couple of laptops including use of a sitelist. What could be preventing my browser engaging Enterprise Mode when requested on this machine?

Acer AST180-UD400B computer turns on when I apply power to it. Before I had
to hit the button in front of the computer. I prefer to use the front button on the
computer. Is that a window vista or bio's problem. If it is bios, how do I reset
it and do I need a new battery?
Thank you,

Answer:Acer start to turn on when power is applied

It is usually a power supply or motherboard hardware issue. Though if you buy a replacement for either (depending on which is causing it) that is the same manufacturer and model, it will probably have the same problem.

I have 14 computers at work that all have the same power supply and motherboard, and they all have this issue. However, once plugged in, the front power switch does work. We just live with it.

Windows done an update this morning and now the start button doesn't work.

Seems to be a common issue with a whole range of fixes out there and stuff that doesn't work, and stuff that makes it worse.

Currently I'm trying to remove the updates to see if that fixes it. Any known issue on the recent widows update fixes?

Answer:Start button not working after update applied this morning

The tab is also missing in properties for the task bar.

SFC found nothing, some old driver conflicts, not unexpected as it's for an win7 upgrade.

Uninstalling the last few updates done nothing.

A few reboots have had no effect either.

Right clicking the task bar icon does nothing either.

Never had such nonsense in 20 years of using windows start menu

Hi
I have a file server where ABE is enabled ,I tried to test a scenario where ACLs are applied on a folder such that only read permission is granted
for example I have shared drive mapped at say Z:
now when applied ACLs from GUI I allowed (Read Attributes,Read extended attributes,Read Permission, list folder/read data) and denied rest of all,I found something as below

abe MICROHARD\t1:(OI)(CI)(DENY)(W,D,WDAC,WO,X,DC)

At this point from user microhard\t1 I was able to see folder 'ABE' and was able to list files/folder inside 'ABE'

When removed microhard\t1 from ABE folder and tried applying same ACLs from command-line

Z:\>icacls abe  /remove  microhard\t1
processed file: abe
Z:\>icacls abe  /deny microhard\t1:(OI)(CI)(W,D,WDAC,WO,X,DC)
processed file: abe

I have a situation where a program shows on "All Programs" but not in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs in Explorer. How can I see that shortcut or whatever in Explorer?

Also, on C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs there appear items (files, shortcuts, whatever) of the same name. What's going on here?

Somehow I must have locked out my start menu button for users (which I log on to use my computer). Lately when I click on the start menu it doesn't work. I can left click on it and bring up the window with written choices. Did I do something that doesn't allow me to left click on the start menu as a user?

Answer:My Admin Login Can Use My Windows 10 Start Menu But As A User Start Menu Doesn't Work.

Hi

One approach that could work for this is to use Powershell, so if you have the search box type powershell and right click and run as admin it, then once open paste this line below in and hit enter, let it run and if you see red text dont worry its normal

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Once run reboot and test the Start menu, you may have to populate the Start menu with the common used apps if you added any, but it should leave the choices you made intact.

Subject says it. Just setting up new pc for my wife. Came with XP Home preinstalled but the start menu was the classic. Switched it to the XP start menu (which I've grown to like better) and My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer icons were removed from the desktop. Only recycle bin remained. Switching back to classic puts them back again. Oddly enough, when I was saving a dowload to the desktop (while set up as XP) the My Computer, My Network Places showed in the save to box when pointing at the desktop.

When I click on the START menu, why is there no path for me to be able to look at say, C:/my documents/my pictures etc...There is nothing there like it is in other Windows programs I have used.

Also when I right click on a program and try to "pin to start menu", there is no option for that, only the shortcut option.

What's up with these things?

Please don't tell me just uninstall a lot of programs. I'm going to do that when I have time to. But I don't now. I'm cautious about uninstalling programs with good reason. I almost uninstalled Jarte after installing it on a friend's advice. That would have been a huge mistake : now Jarte is one of my favorite programs.

Answer:What's best program for overcrowded XP start menu, Handy Start Menu or something else

Re: What's best program for overcrowded XP start menu, Handy Start Menu or something

conceptualclarity...

I think it helps to start with knowing how the start menu works. Without getting into the accounts bit (I don't have one on this PC...just use the default administrator account), here's what I did to organize my Start Menu:

1. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs
2. Leave the folder open but minimize it
3. Open Start menu and look at the entries with the idea of creating subgroups for them
4. Decide on subgroup titles and in the open C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Start Menu\Programs folder right click and select New->Folder
5. Title the folder the name of your first new subgroup
6. Repeat the process until you have all the subgroups you want
7. Now go to your Start menu, open it and the Programs menu. Begin dragging program icons into whichever folder you created for them.

Some examples of ones that might help you could be System Applications, Security Applications, Microsoft Programs, Internet Browsers, Media Browsers, Diagnostics Applications, PC Maintenance Applications, etc...

Anyway, this is how I organized my Start menu. For me, adding Rainmeter to the desktop made it even better. I use the Start menu about 1/3 as much because of Rainmeter...

I've expanded the size of the Start Menu so I can put a lot of Tiles there, but when I drag a Tile to a new location it sometimes bounces back to where it had been. Other times moving a Tile somewhere will cause another Tile so shift to somewhere else.
How can I instruct the Start Menu to allow me to place (by dragging) any Tile anywhere I want?

Answer:How To Be Able To Place Start Menu Tiles Anywher On Start Menu

The Windows 10 Start Menu is not a desktop. It is actually a series of square grids grouped under headings (called groups). When you move a tile to an empty group, you can see the space for the heading for that group appear. It seems to be a limitation that the spaces directly below a foup heading must be filled first. You can drag a tile to the third or fourth row under a group heading without the row above it being occupied by at least one tile first.

There can only be one tile in each grid space, so when you try to place a tile over the top of an existing one, the previously existing tile there must be moved out of the way for the new tile to fit in that grid space. The previous tile is moved to the nearest empty grid space underneath the same group heading.

If you click in the space for the group heading you can enter a name for that group. See this thread for an example:

Start Menu Reviver is one of the app that can help you in this regard, and thanks to version 2.5, the application does that even easier.

Start Menu Reviver 2.5 is a really major release for users and brings backward compatibility with old color schemes and more theme customization options, as well as improvements to many built-in modules, including settings, folders view, the tile background colors, and search results.

There are also lots of fixed bugs, including some aimed at tiles and color themes.

Needless to say, the application provides support for both Windows 8 and 8.1 and replaces the default Start button that?s available in the latter to launch the Start menu. A shortcut is also available to bring up the Start screen in case you?d like to keep both of them.

The app comes with a really modern design, and truth be told, this is the closest you can get when it comes to the Windows 9 Start menu, so go ahead and download Start Menu Reviver 2.5 right now to see what it?s up to.

Either the Windows 10 start menu really sucks or I am using it wrong. I am used to the StartisBack/Windows 7 menu where you can pin anything and all applications will come up in search results. In the Windows 10 menu, I can't pin anything to the start menu that's not already in the menu. So if I want to drag a shortcut from the desktop, a file from somewhere, or a folder, it will not allow me to pin it. Also right clicking on an item anywhere and selecting "Pin to Start" does nothing. Is this the standard behavior or is something wrong with my setup?

Also, the start menu search does not bring up the majority of the non-metro programs installed on my system. Most of them are not even in the "All Apps" list. If I don't have shortcuts on my desktop, the only way to access them is to navigate to the Program Files folder and run the exe from there. This is terrible.

Answer:Can't pin anything to start menu? and start menu search results?

I am still using Start8 with no issues. I would go with either Classic Shell or Start8.

Hi, I'd like to add a context menu entry to the default set
Open/Open all users/Explore/Explore All users/Sort by Name/Rename etc
which appear when you

right click on a folder in an expanded Start menu (after 'Programs).

Technically, the 'folder' is a 'file folder'.

But the normal set of file folder context menu entries is suppressed by Windows in this instance.

Thus normal additions to the context menu set associated with 'anything' or 'file folders' or 'directories' never affects this set (so far).

I can add context menu entries which appear when I right click on a shortcut, but NOT folders.

I've tried Fast Explorer, and a couple of other utilities.

'Sort By Name', 'Explore All Users' are not in the registry. (Normally context menu entries appear in one of about 6 locations).

Ideas welcome!

Background: I want to do this 'cos I want to keep a 'bad' context menu entry that stops explorer running from this context menu (some programs do that, alas, thus you can't right click, explore the start menu once you install them and their context menu). Normally I have disabled such entries using Shellex View.

So I want to add one which uses a different file manager.

Thanks!

Hi

I wondered if anyone out there has had a similar experience to me...

For some weeks now I have had problems where the START MENU wouldn't launch, metro apps (OneDrive, Tweetium, Money, News etc) would fail to launch (just a blank window up), right mouse clicks wouldn't work, internet browsing slowed up...
Signing out of my windows account then back in again solved it... FOR A WHILE. After an hour or two gradually (one app after another etc) the same problems would occur.
Researching this, I came to the conclusion that Windows 10 was corrupt (or at least my user profile was) and a re-install was necessary. OR I also read of compatibility problems with Windows 10 in my AV software (Kaspersky Internet Security 16.0.0.614) and wondered if the problem lay there.
Yesterday I uninstalled Kaspersky and relied on Win Defender. For 2 days now (unprecedented recently) my laptop has behaved impeccably, no problems as above.
So, am I to blame Kaspersky? Am I safe with Just Win Def? Any other AV suites throwing up problems? Any Kaspersky users with any experiences to share?
Thanks!

Hi, @JP56:

I expect my first, new Win10 system to arrive this week and intend to install KIS 2016 on it, as I have done with many Vista and Win7 boxes.
AFAIK, there is no inherent problem with KIS/KTS 2016 on Win10.

However, each computer is unique.
There may be something about your system contributing to the behavior you report.

First, I would make sure you have fully and cleanly uninstalled any previous 3rd-party AV programs, such as Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, Webroot, etc. I suggest using the vendor's removal tool, if available. HERE is a comprehensive list by one of our forum experts.

Next, I would verify through the Windows Control Panel that both Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are disabled.
KIS ought to have automatically disabled them when it was installed. But if a recent Windows update or other process re-enabled either or both of those, that could cause a problem.

The other thing is that you are running KIS 16.0.0.614 (aka "MR0").
The most current version (available in most or all locales now) is KIS 16.0.1.445(c) (aka "MR1").
Upgrading from MR0 to MR1 is probably best accomplished via a "clean" upgrade:
Have your license info on-hand, just in case.Download and save -- but do not run yet -- the MR1 installer from HERE or from the local site in your country.Uninstall MR0 from Windows control panel, keeping only the license info.Reboot.Run the MR1 installer > (activate if needed) > update > reboot.

A couple of weeks ago (well maybe 10 days ago) I turned on my computer to see that the desktop was nothing but the photograph background I usually see. My icons were gone! Taskbar, Start Menu, too.

I tried CTRL-ESC. Didn't work. I tried to run explorer.exe. Didn't work. I can't even access Control Panel (control.exe). I don't have malware or a virus (though I did just do a big clean, but only the speed of my computer improved; I still have to run all my programs through Task Manager), but I think the damage was probably done by a virus or trojan.

I've tried the Fix on Kelly's Korner. I've tried looking at Microcoft's page for help, but I can't find anything. I even tried copying the explorer.exe file from my machine at work and putting it in place of the other explorer file (I kept the original, though renamed it). Nothing has worked. Hi,
I have created and pinned some personal folders to the start menu. They now appear on the left hand side of the start menu, along with the other applications.

Here are my questions:

1) How can I set up those folders so that they would appear with the little arrow on the right that will allow me to see the content of those folders as a menu, instead of having to open them as Explorer windows?
I would like to do that instead of using the "pull up" option in the taskbar.

1a)How can I change the name of a folder pinned to the start menu without changing the name of the real folder?

2) Is it possible to create personal folders to insert on the right hand side pane of the start menu? (to appear under the system default folders called "pictures", "music" etc)

Thank you for any advice on this.

Answer:menu view of personal folders pinned to start menu

1.) You should be able to right click the folder and select "view as link" or "view as menu"

1a) Not sure if you can do that.

2) It is not possible to include personal folders on the right side of the start menu.

I guess this is best explained with images, so here's what I want. (If possible of course).

So in this screenshot you can see my Start Menu, notice that some of this icons (Steam, Curse Client and Origin) have an arrow next to them? When you hover, or click, with the mouse the Task menu opens up.
What I want is to add an icon of Microsoft Office and make it so that the arrow is there too (just like Steam, Origin and Curse Client) and make it so that when I click or hover the Task menu will appear, and on the list will be MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, etc
I would like to know if it's at all possible and if so how can I do it?

Any help would be appreciated.

I think the only thing that will work here is a registry hack.

By default if you set the start menu properties to display "favorites" it does so by a menu. It does not give you a choice to display this as a link or a menu like it does for other folders.

Is there a way to fix this?

Answer:Display Favorites as a link not a menu in Start Menu

Drag it on to the start menu ( left hand pane) and pin it and it will open up in a new window when clicked.

Sorry i know its not what you want but its the only option i know.

What do you mean you are unable to locate them?  How do you know they are there if you don't know where they are?  If it's saying you can't remove them because they are in use or access is denied you can try rebooting and pressing F8 to get into safe mode.  Try removing them from there.

I actually have no beef with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.

See attached pic to see what I'm talking about.
Any help would be greatly appreciated -- thanks in advance!!

Answer:Change menu background color in win 8.1? NOT Start menu...

Haven't had any success either.
Even creating 'Classic' theme in Windows 7 and copying it over doesn't work!

Hello All,

When I click on the search button in the start menu of WinXp,
or when I use the search item in the context menu, it doesn't work.

Nothing happens and I have to wait about 30 seconds
before regaining control over the computer
(the start button remains in the dark state, and nothing reacts,
except the task manager)

Searching does work if I use the Search button in Windows Explorer.
It also works in safe mode.

Reinstalling the search assistant does not help.

I also checked my computer with adaware, spybot and some AV-programs,
but that doesn't help either.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks and Have a Great Day,

Keukie

The win 7 start menu download folder item on the right sorts by name. This is very annoying. I cannot find a download unless I know its name. If by date I just look up a recent download at top of list.

How do I change behavior so downloads in start menu (right column) sorts by date?

NB. I changed the folder properties in explorer so the download folder sorts by date. It does there no problem. But not in the start menu.

Rob

Answer:sort start menu download menu by date not name

What a worthless feature to sort by name when it is downloads. I am checking for a registry work around, but it is a slow bushiness for me.

So I have the Classic Shell start menu replacement program (fantastic by the way), and it just occurred to me. Is it possible to have a menu on the right pane, instead of adding a scroll arrow on the bottom when there's too many items to fit on a screen, behave like the All Programs menu and automatically throw the other items into a second column? (If there's nothing you can tell me, that's fine, just thought I'd ask)

My Start button's context menu has double entries. It either happened when updating from Win8 to Win8.1 preview, or from Win8.1 preview to Win8.1 official release, though I'm pretty sure it was the former. Where does Windows contain the entries for this context menu so that I may prune duplicates and possibly reorder them to my liking?

Picture shows duplicated entries in top left corner.

I don't know if this is a widespread problem, but I just noticed that I have duplicate context menu entries for "Files" and "Programs" that are reached by typing into the search box at the Start menu. See attached screenshot. This doesn't apply to Control Panel items, Videos, Documents, Music, etc.

Any solutions?

Answer:Duplicate Context menu entries in Start menu

A long standing issue (XP also) with the context menu when accessed from certain locations.

One menu is appearing for the target, one for the link.

If you right click the offending item - check properties - you will see that your viewing the link, not the actual file.

Wierd, huh?

If I recall, I could avoid the problem if there were no "customizations" in the context menu.

I also remember a connection to the shortcut arrow. With the arrow shown, no doubling.

I really don't remember why it does that. One of the two.

Hey. A couple of issues with W10 start menu ( - not sure if they're symptoms of the same thing. This is GA x64 W10 with all current updates installed

1) Pin to start menu doesn't pin anything to the start menu. I wanted to pin File History - R click in control panel, select Pin to Start - doesn't pin. Tested on another machine and it works there.

2) R click the Start button for the Power User menu - all I see is Network Connections - same result with Win X. Again, works as expected on another install.

Any ideas to save me doing a re-install?

Edit - SFC reports no violations.

Edit - switched to a local account on the machine and PU menu is there and working - so is this a permissions thing? My original account is admin.

I have just upgraded to Win10 and most items on the "Power User Command Menu" do not work if the menu is accessed by right-clicking the Start Menu button on the Task Bar. The only items that do work are Search, Run, Shut down and Desktop. If the menu is accessed by the other means, the menu items work fine.

I've tried SFC and a day searching the web with no luck. Any ideas how to fix it?

The computer is a Toshiba laptop running an Intel? Core? 2 Duo Processor T5500 with 4 Gb of memory. I don't know what the proper name for the "Power User Command Menu" may be, but that's the only way I've seen it referenced elsewhere in this forum.

We have a custom application which users are used to launching by right clicking on the start menu and selecting it from there.

We have made this customisation in both XP and Vista by adding an entry in:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

However when I try to do this in Windows 7 nothing appears.

The only item that appears are the default windows items:
"Properties" and "Open Windows Explorer"

Any ideas if we can actually do this in windows 7 or is there another location in the registry this kind of thing is read from?

I've never tried this, so I don't have back-up on this.

I doubt this could have been changed in Windows 7, since it is used for other options. I've added my own options, but when right-clicking files only. It is only an assumption, though.

I'll check on this.

In 32-bit I can also add folders/shortcuts to Start menu at ...

Hey everyone,

Does anyone know if it is possible to get a full screen menu screen instead of the standard windows start menu?

I want something similar to the linux gnome menu screen whenever I press my windows key.
I've already posted this question on the rainmeters forum but I think I should be looking for some sort of shell extension or possibly program it myself in .NET (any pointers on where to start? I have limited knowledge of .NET I suppose I should be looking at the windows API code pack...) or if it already exists some sort of third party application that does something similar so I can customize it to look like gnome.

My idea is to have something like this when I press my windows key:
It should have the standard start menu search function implemented.
I've already tried the omnimo rainmeter skin but this doesn't allow for setting the hotkey to the windows key nor does it have the standard start menu search functions implemented.

I should also disable the standard start menu when I press the windows hotkey.

Any ideas?

Just moved to Windows 7.

We're told over and over that the new start menu is better in every conceivable way, but the truth is, for a keyboard oriented power user like me, it truly sucks. At least, the default setup, and all the customizations I've attempted, truly suck swamp water.

In XP, I configured all my programs to be accessible in 3 keypresses. Eg. by putting Notepad under Start > Tools > Notepad, I could bring it up in a split second by pressing Windows Key, T, N - likewise for the ~20 other programs I have. I've had this for 8 years and it's ingrained in my style, but more importantly, it is genuinely highly efficient.

I've tried my darndest in W7 to recreate this. However several things are in the way:

1) After the windows key, the Search box has the focus. So no matter what you type in, it isn't shortcutting through the programs menu, it's typing in a search query.

2) I can't seem to create my own top level menus under the start menu (like "tools", "office" etc).

3) The All Programs link doesn't open up a menu with sub menus etc - just lists them in a single list. Maybe typical users prefer this (fair enough) but it's brain damagingly irritating for a power user, as you lose all sense of hierarchy and location.

Can anyone suggest how I could recreate my old XP behavior in W7?

Hi All,

Thanks for visiting my thread. I'm rebuilding all computers to Windows 10 at the School I work at. I've been able to lock down everything using Group Policy and Registry tweaks apart from two niggling little issues.

1. I can't get rid of Open file location when right-clicking on programs under all apps on the start menu. There is a tutorial on this site which includes registry entries to remove this option but it is not working for me. The other tutorial to remove run as administrator worked perfectly. The start menu is redirected to a folder on the DC and we don't want the students being able to browse the DC

2. I can't remove the Win + X ( right-click on Start ) context menu. I've enabled all the relevant GPO settings but this just refuses to die. All the options are disabled so this is less important than the first issue. Would be nice to know how to do this still.

Any help or advice would be greatly received. Many thanks for reading.

Kind Regards, Martin

Think Pad Twist i7-3537U No matter how fast or how many times I press the enter key when starting, I can not access the start-up menu. Immediately after the white "ThinkPad - To interrupt normal start press Enter" letters appear for just a fraction of a second on the bottom left corner, there comes the windows blue logo, and windows starts. - The enter key is working fine (I can use it with any application)- I am completely shutting down the laptop, not sleeping or hibernating.- I have tried a "safe mode" start from msconfig -> same results.

I used to be able to right-click on the "Recent" icon on the start menu and see an option to clear the recent files list. Now it's gone. The "Recent" icon is still there and still functions properly and lists recently opened files, but the "Clear" option is now missing from the Recent right-click menu.

I went to %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows and saw that the folder icon for the Recent folder was now set to the generic folder icon instead of the unique recent folder icon it used to show. Opening the folder though, the correct original icon shows in the task bar, address bar, and title bar.

I saw some instructions somewhere to delete and recreate the Recent folder (delete the folder from explorer, then type shell:recent in the start menu search bar) but it was a procedure for Windows 7 and it didn't work here in Windows 10.

This is a new laptop with Win 10 Home preinstalled, not an upgrade from anything else.

I know how to clear the recent items using other methods, but would like to have this option restored to the right-click menu, the way it was before.

Answer:Start Menu Recent Items "Clear" option missing from right-click menu

I'd actually solved this quite a while ago but just realized I never posted the solution.1. With notepad, create a txt file containing:
[.ShellClassInfo][email protected]%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,[email protected],dll,-12692IconResource=%SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-117CLSID={0C39A5CF-1A7A-40C8-BA74-8900E6DF5FCD}
2. Save it in the Recent folder itself, naming it "desktop" and with the extension .ini (i.e. desktop.ini)
3. Right-click on the new .ini file and set it to "Hidden".
4. Close the folder window and restart explorer from taskmanager if necessary.

That worked for me. Every now and again this issue will reappear so I keep a spare desktop.ini file that I just copy to the Recent folder whenever this happens.

Hi,

as the question says, I would like to add a menu to the Windows 7 menu which points to a network location.

I've read the tutorials and was able to add a network folder to the programs menu but that's not what I need (it's under a submenu and it just opens the network location instead of working as a menu). Maybe it's possible to solve this problem with classic menu but that wouldn't look very nice...

I would have expected a GPO for this but so far I've found nothing.

So my question is: is there a way to give all my network users access to a menu (much preferred) via the start menu?

And if that's not possible are there any good alternatives? Maybe via a toolbar menu (I haven't found a way yet to set that for all users)?

thanks!

Verify that Auto Hide is not checked.
If Auto Hide is not enabled move the task bar up by following the below steps.

Press CTRL + ESC or your Windows key to make Start menu appear.
Try to notice where the Start menu appeared; generally, it should be the bottom left corner.
Press ESC. You should now notice a small gray line at the location of where the start was.

In the right panel of the Start Menu, you have a link to your user profile, documents, my computer, pictures, music, etc. However, if you enable the predefined links by customizing the Start Menu, they seem to appear in a predefined order that you can't change by simply dragging and dropping. Is there a registry hack to change the order in which they appear? For the sake of argument, let's say I want to move the "Pictures" folder to be the topmost menu item above the link to my user profile.

Also, is there some way to pin a folder to the Start Menu, yet have it work like a cascading menu displaying its folder contents?

Answer:How to reorder the navigation start panel links in Start Menu

Can't be done ... or at least nobody's found a way yet. Too much is set up within the encrypted stylesheets that are the heart of the Windows 7 system.

hello.

I wanted to add some programs to the top of the left side of the start menu (free space on the screenshoot). I have read about the "Pin to Start List" if you rightclick while holding shift. But this seems not to be working anymore!?!?! Is there another possibility to customize this list or to re-add the function?
I don't want to use "recently added apps" or something like that ...

Answer:Customize the left side of the Start menu - Pin to Start List?

Hello Christian,

That would be the "Most used" group on your Start menu.

https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/6...dows-10-a.html

You can't add anything to "Most used" since it'll only show recent apps, but you can add or remove items in All apps if you like.

Title says it all, but why? Last time I was using Windows 7 it was still working fine. Now I noticed it stopped working when I upgraded to Windows 10. I'm not bothered by this but I'm just asking if this is normal?

Answer:Start Button on my keyboard won't trigger to open start menu

Does the keyboard have a key to block start menu usage. So called game mode.

Users missing old-time Start button in Windows 8, try Win8 Start Button. The button like most other applications tries to restore all familiar menus and options in Windows 8.
Just head over to the download page and install the application. Once installed, a familiar Windows Start orb appears in the lower left corner of your computer screen. Like the traditional Start menu, Windows 8 Start button displays two-pane Start menu which provides easy access to all your Windows programs (Documents, folders, etc).
The Windows 8 StartButton's menu displays commands for search, run, and Help. Besides, it has a Shut Down option too. Right-clicking on the orb brings up the application settings. Here, you can select a particular Start menu style. Start menu style options available are, Classic WindowsWindows XPWindows 7
Win8 Start Button can be downloaded from here.

Switched to the XP-ish Classic Start Menu, plus Adjust for Best Performance, in the usual prescribed way, no third-party interface-modifiers. All looks & works fine except that the Start button itself looks like TWO buttons -- one atop the other and just slightly out of alignment (screenshot here).

Nothing?s malfunctioning, but it sure looks silly. I haven?t done anything unusual, apart from docking the taskbar on the right side of the screen. What could be causing this, and how can I un-cause it? Would Classic Shell fix this?

Grateful for any clues.

Answer:Classic Start Menu: Start Button appears doubled

Which classic start menu software are you using?

Start Menu or Start Screen won?t close after clicking a tile of Windows 7 Games. I installed the Windows 7 Games on a Windows 10 machine. It works on the main (admin) account. It, however, has this glitch on a non-admin account, when opening one of the games on the Start Screen (or Menu: I tried both), that Start stays there after opening the program:

With right clicking and opening as admin (on the second non-admin account), the program, or one of them don?t open at all.

One other thing is, I installed the software on the admin account. Windows 10 is set to Dutch. The program folder is in English on the admin account, however. The folder is called ?Games?.

On the other account, the folder is in Dutch: the folder is called ?Onstpanning?.

I did not install on the second account, because one doesn?t have to, after having it installed on the main account, right?

Answer:Start Menu or Start Screen wont close after clicking tile

I just tried on my own Windows 10 machine, but I have the exact same problem. My main account is in English.

The programs worked perfectly fine on Windows 8 with a second account. I will try other programs to see if the same problem occurs.

I've looked around the internet for anyone who had a problem like this but
i havent found a single forum anywhere that helps so..

I run 64-bit windows vista and recently i downloaded Grand Chase to it.
The first day it worked just fine but today after experiencing some heavy lag
spikes,i restarted my computer and when i tried to open grandchase from the
desktop shortcut(Ran as administer)The desktop just froze. So i tried running it from
the start menu but it did the same, only when i tried to click anything in the start menu
after trying to run Grand Chase,it just gave me a "bing" sound. The only solution to unfreezing
the two is to log off and back onto my computer but Grand Chase still wont work.

I dont think it's the game itself but rather my computer, since i had this same issue before
with yahoo messenger but i cant remember what i did,if anything,to fix it but Yahoo messenger
works just fine now..System restore is out of the question, since the last checkpoint it's made was
sometime in 2011 which i used once before and was basically restored back to a horrible point where
i had alot of viruses and things ran extremely slow with no norton security or anything to help it..

Anybody have some ideas..?I'm able to reinstall the game via safe mode but when i go back to
normal mode it's the same story retold from point A.

Answer:Computer desktop/start menu freeze when i try to start certain programs

You can try installing Game Booster and running Grand Chase via Game Booster, and see if that helps.

I'm running the RTM on a netbook and have noticed that, unlike in Windows 7/8/8.1, I'm no longer able to hit Start and type in an executable. I have a bunch of portable apps that I typically type in and pull up. Now, the Start menu search pulls up ever OTHER file except the executable. It's very annoying and don't see why this shouldn't work.

What's worse, is if I pin the app to the start menu, it doesn't search it then. Say, I pin "puttyportable.exe" as a shortcut (and rename it to just PuTTY) to the start menu. Typing in "putty" gives me nothing - just the same associated files that were in the puttyportable folder (ini files, etc).

Is anyone else experiencing this? I've already rebooted and rebuild the index. Thanks.

EDIT: according to the feedback app, a lot are experiencing this. Really hoping they change this behavior.

Answer:Not able to search executables or pinned Start apps from Start menu

Yes, but it was working a few days ago, so a recent update buggered it.

I'm probably like most people - able to solve the seemingly endless minor windows problems that arise after a bit of google searching on forums. However at the moment I've got two problems that I just can't fix despite trying every solution I could on the web including all of the ones in the relevant threads on this site (short of a clean reinstall). I've done a repair install with no effect. I think the problems are connected though I can't demonstrate this. Perhaps I should be posting in the existing threads but I do think there is a link and thus a common problem. The proble are:

1) Microsoft Edge will not start - the screen opens for a few seconds and then closes. All other browsers and other programs work normally. I've tried all of the answers here: Reset Microsoft Edge to Default in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Browsers Email Tutorials plus all those in the many similar threads around the web

2) For newly created user accounts only, whether normal or admin, the start menu does not work, the Cortana search field is not present, and nor are any MS applications eg Office (though right click on the start button works) or Edge. All other normally installed non-MS programs appear on the desktop and work normally. Similarly I have tried everything I could find in threads like this: Start button on Windows 10 does not work - Microsoft Community A difference between my symptoms and those commonly reported are that mine only affect new accounts. Nothing I do within those account... Read more

Answer:Two connected problems?: Edge won't start & Start Menu does not work

Hi, could be your default user account is corrupt. That would mean any new user account you create would also be affected.

I can't tell you if a repair install (which you've tried) should have been expected to resolve that (by creating a new copy of it).
Obviously you've now no useful restore points.

Question then would be- where to go now? Mmm... would copying that from any other Win 10 installation (preferably the same build) work?

Which is your build? (Win key + R, winver)

Is there anything showing at the bottom of your screen? If not, slowly pass the cursor toward the bottom of the screen to see if the taskbar then shows. If so, right click on it and untick "autohide the taskbar."

Hi I have a clean install of windows 10 with bootcamp on a macbook 13 early 2015 using the iso downloaded from microsoft. I've also enabled compact os.

I have this same problem: Windows 10 Search can't find ANY applications. Even calculator - Super User it seems.

Win+S doesn't find native applications like Edge, Calculator or anything that I installed, like Skype.

I tried everything I found on the internet, running the search troubleshooter (it doesn't find anything wrong), deleting that registry key, using that powershell command to reinstall native apps, rebuilding the index, setting the correct en-us language everywhere, creating a new user to see if the search works there (it doesn't).
I also disabled Cortana, no change, Search behaves the same.

Search finds internal windows stuff, like everything in control panel, just not things in Start Menu.
To be clear, I'm not talking about File Explorer search, that works. Just Start Menu Search, using Win+S.

Answer:Windows 10 Start Search can't find stuff in Start Menu

Start menu search not finding applications?
Would you care to read thru that thread and see if anything helps? And assuming yours is the same symptom - I know nothing about bootcamp- please join that thread.

Key to this is search indexing working and no changes (deletions) being made to what's indexed.

Answer:Failed To Load Dll, No Start Menu, Programs Wont Start, Etc

Please try using this to repair the broken registry entry that may be causing this.Download Autoruns, search for the related entry and then delete it.Create a new folder on your hard drive called AutoRuns (C:\AutoRuns) and extract (unzip) the file there. (click HERE if you're not sure how to do this.)Open the folder and double-click on autoruns.exe to launch it.Please be patient as it scans and populates the entries. When done scanning, it will say Ready at the bottom.Scroll through the list and look for a startup entry related to the file(s) in the error message.Right-click on the entry and choose delete.Reboot your computer and see if the startup error returns.

Today I updated my Nvidia driver and rebooted my machine. Everything seemed to go well. I did not receive any errors.

When I opened my start menu I noticed that some programs that I almost never use anymore were my only recent programs. I then opened a program that use often that was not listed. I then opened a file and then closed the program. Even though there was room on the recent programs area the application was not showing up.

After some searching around I saw people talk about their two check boxes on the privacy section of the start menu options being grayed out. I checked mine and they we checked and were enabled. Other forum posts said to uncheck them restart and the re-check them. I did this but to no avail. I was deciding to just live with it as pinning to the start menu still works.

I started pinning my most important apps and opening a file to make sure that the recent files jump menu was showing up. It works for all applications except Microsoft applications. I added MS Excel to my pinned list and opened a recent file (that shows up in the apps recent files section) then saved it and closed Excel. When I opened my start menu again Excel still lacks a jump menu for recent apps.

Any help on this will be appreciated.

Here's a screenshot of "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" dialog from a fresh clean install of Windows 10 Pro x64
As you can see, despite its name, it does not have a tab for "Start Menu". I remember that Preview versions of Windows 10 had a "Start Menu" tab. Did they just remove at the last moment? And how I change Start Menu options without that tab?

Answer:"Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" have no "Start Menu" tab anymore??

When I click on the Windows icon in the bottom left hand corner of the screen nothing happens.

I've re-booted, restored and via Powershell I've tried the 'Get - Appx package etc' that has been suggested in a number of places on the Web. None of that has worked.

I've come to the conclusion that the only way to go is to Refresh/Reset the system.

The problem is that the normal way to do that would be to click on the Windows icon and select Settings, but the icon doesn't work.

Is there another way to get to the Recovery options?

BTW updates are automatic - and current - no new apps have been installed nor alterations made for weeks and the system was working fine yesterday.

In addition the time lag between clicking on File Explorer and the window actually appearing takes an age.

If I enter Refresh into Search the option comes up but when I click on it nothing happens.

I also ran a system checker as suggested in some forums.

Nada.

I can right click on the start button but not left click

Please help!

My Start Button works to the extent that I can click it and browse all of my programs. I also have all of the categories on the right side like "Computer", "Control Panel", etc.

What I don't have are any of my recently used programs. That area is blank. I have noticed over the years that I typically use about the same 10-15 programs frequently and the loss of these "instant shortcuts" means I have to drill down through the hierarchy of Start Menu programs to find the one I want to launch. I do have a number of programs pinned to the Taskbar, but I'd really like to have my Start Button work like it used to.

Any suggestions?

PS: The only one that does show up is the Command Prompt which I had copied from its default location because I use it so much. I had it located outside the "Programs" folder on the Start Menu so it would be at the top.

Ok, there are multiple users on my computer from my family, so I am not the only one who uses it. I had a worm on my computer that I was trying to get rid of and im not much of a computer expert, but when I went to remove it I guess the program found and deleted anything that was infected which im assuming were some important programs because now on restart I dont even have a start menu, any icons, and when I try to Run programs it doesnt let me, the only thing I could get up was Internet Explorer. Is there anyway I could restore, or how should I go about fixing this?

You can use either the Start Menu or Start Screen by following Brink's Tutorial

Start Screen

Answer:Post your Windows 10 Start menu or Start Screen

I do not like the old/new Start, so I do not intend on using it, like I do not plan on using Store.
