Switching between desktops keyboard shortcut not working

Question: Switching between desktops keyboard shortcut not working

Hello, my issue is what title says. When i press ctrl+win+1/2/3/4, or ctrl+win+left/right, nothing happens. This is of course when i have numbers of desktop opened. This seems to be a common issue but no genuine fix. Perhaps here someone will know? Thanks!

Preferred Solution: Switching between desktops keyboard shortcut not working

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am just about to throw my thinkpad against the wall. This happened twice today. Typing away and hitting a shortcut accidentaly that disables my keyboard - instead of being able to type - use text - each letter turns different functions on/off. I have looked through the instruction booklet and googled but came up with NADA. The only thing that works is restarting the laptop - it's then back to normal. H E L P !!

Hi folks.

I'm looking for a way to switch between HDMI and my laptop screen. Preferably a quick keyboard shortcut.
I have my laptop connected to my tv screen always, however, sometimes when i'm gaming on the tv i'll have to disconnect my HDMI to access my laptop screen, or will have to switch sources on my tv which i don't want to have to do. The laptop is a couple of years old and i worry that one day i will mess up the hdmi input pulling it in and out daily. I could probably explain it better but i'm not sure how to

I've done some of my own searching but people say to use the tv as a second screen or mirror the laptop screen. I find the light on my laptops screen distracting, why don't i close the laptop when i'm watching tv you say? The hinges are knackered plus when i open the laptop up again it starts mirroring my laptop screen again, it's inconvenient to say the least.

Thank you.
Adam

Answer:Computer keyboard shortcut. Switching between HDMI and laptop screen.

Most Notebooks/Laptops have a keyboard setting for control such as the Fn key plus another F key or other key/s for dimming/increasing the display, shouldn't affect the HDMI [or VGA on some] output. An example, my Vostro 1510 uses the Fn key plus the Up and Down arrows to make the changes while may ASUS uses the Fn key plus F5 or F6 for change.

I have been working on a friend's PC -- an hp pavilion (a527x) that's running WinXP-SP2. I just spent days cleaning all the spyware off of it, & finally got an OK from Chaslang that it was clean! However, I'm getting ready to return it, & now when I log off from one user & click on the 2nd user to change desktops, the monitor just goes black with a flashing cursor for a few seconds. Cannot get anything else to come up on the monitor then, & haven't had any trouble with the monitor or any other hardware up to this point. I turned off "hibernate", etc...in "Power Options" in the Control Panel. Any ideas here as to the cause? PC is running fine otherwise. Although can't seem to get MyWayWebSearch spyware off of it. Have tried all help in "Anti-Spyware" page. Anyone had this happen before to them or anyone know a possible cause & solution? Thanks bunches, in advance! Shannon

Is it possible to place different sets of icons on different desktop ?
For example, having desktop 1 empty, desktop 2 full of files, desktop 3 with shortcuts to programmes/games, etc.
Also is there a way to have a different wallpaper on each desktop, to tell them apart faster ?

My guess is all of that is not possible, given that additional desktops are not supposed to be "permanent", but rather added/deleted quickly. But maybe with a bit of tweaking ?

I have an Emachine with WindowsXP on it, and it has this keyboard with these nifty little silver keys that make life SOOOOO much simpler. However, after some issues with virus I guess, suddenly they don't work properly anymore. Please note: I'm only guessing that the virus is what messed them up, I don't actually know.

My CUT/COPY/PASTE keys don't work at all, my CALCULATOR key gives me like 5 calculators, and since I don't use the others, I'm not sure if they work or not...heck, I'm not entirely positive what all of them do, but I'm sure that I can live without them.

I have tried unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in, but don't know what else to do to get the keys to work again. Suggestions anyone??

I have this one file that date's back to 'o9

Every time I try to delete this little bug it comes up with "Destination Folder Access Denied - You need to confirm this operation"
I would press continue and it will come up with another window stating "User Account Control - Windows needs your permission to continue"
...
Of course I would press continue but it would give me the same window as the first and tell me to try again.

You probably could guess that the program it uses is already uninstalled, so how do I get rid of such a superfluous shortcut?

Hi,

I have the following problem: switching virtual desktops to the right (CTRL+WIN+Right Arrow) doesn't work. On the other hand, when I go to e.g. desktop number 3 (using WIN+TAB and mouse) I can switch to the left using CTRL+WIN+Left Arrow without any difficulties...

I installed Windows Hotke Explorer to check, if CTRL+WIN+RIGHT has been taken, but it just stands "System (Move window)" in both cases.

Does anyone know, what could be the reason?

I'm not sure if this is unqiue to Yoga 2 Pro or Microsoft 10 in general, but before when I wanted to switch between desktops using the windows key + ctrl + arrow key shortcut, the desktop on the screen would literally slide over. Now when I attempt to switch between desktops, that animation no longer happens--instead, the desktop's features just shift to those of the desktop I'm switching to. It can get confusing, because it's not as visually explicit when the desktop has been switched. Is this just a result of a Windows 10 update, or is this situation unique to my laptop? Thanks in advance!

I assigned a new shortcut on desktop to shutdown my pc and assigned a keyboad shortcut ctrl + alt + f12. The shortcut always works properly if i double click on the shortcut icon but doesn't always work when pressing ctrl+alt+f12. Can someone explain why is this happening ?

Answer:Custom keyboard shortcut key not working properly

Hello gidra,

Welcome to Seven Forums.

Not sure. First thought is that some app. you have running may be interfering. Do you have other shortcuts on the desktop with keyboard shortcuts? Do they always work? When the shutdown doesn't work, try one of the others to see if it's working.

Hope this helps.

I noticed that the Windows + P displayswitch function is not working as it did in 8.1 and 7. Has this feature been removed? Was this function native in OS or requires additional support from keyboard or gfx drivers?

My operating systems are:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (Default OS)
Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

Motherboard:
ASUS MAXIMUS VII HERO Intel Z97

Problem:
Mouse and keyboard stop working at the logon screen (usually even sooner at Starting Windows loading screen) when switching from Windows 8 to Windows 7. But when you switch from Windows 7 to Windows 8, they still work but not vice versa. They don't work at the Windows 7 installation menu either when booting from Windows DVD.

I have tried:Unplug mouse and keybaord. Nothing.
Plug-in another keyboard. Still nothing. It' s like they are being turned off immediately I plug them in.

Known temporary fixes:
1. Turn of PC and disconnect the power cable. Put the cable back in and start the PC. Mouse and keyboard are now work again. If you switch OS again you have to repeat these steps.
2. Go to the BIOS settings and change default settings related to USBs. Like USB Support to "Full Initialization" (default: Partial Initialization). Save changes and restart PC and they should work again.

Question:
How can I fix it so that mouse and keyboard always work when booting to a different OS?

Answer:Dual Boot - Keyboard and Mouse NOT Working after switching OS

I got it fixed. The problem was related to USB 3.0.

Solution was to change Intel xHCI Mode from "Smart Auto" to "Auto" (or just disable it) under Advanced - USB Configuration. So it will not use USB 3.0 during the boot.

Note: Also make sure that Legacy USB support it set to Auto or Enabled.

Hello,
I like the virtual desktops you have added in windows 10, but there is one anoying problem for me to use them. I was using virtual desktops in debian where I could switch between the desktops and move application from one to another using shortcuts. I accept the shortcuts Win + D, Win + Ctrl + Left/Right, but I am missing shortcut for moving application from one desktop to another.
Could there be created shortcut (for example Win + Ctrl + Shift + Left/Right) the active window to left/right desktop?
Also it could be nice to create new desktop dynamicaly when application is on the last desktop and shortcut for the move to the right is pressed. And remove the last desktop when last application is moved to the left (or maybe even if it is closed). But the shortcut itself is more important to me.
Thanks

Welcome to TenForums!

Task Manager should also be available by a right-click on Start or on an empty part of the taskbar.

This sounds suspiciously like something is deliberately blocking you from running Task Manager - a tactic sometimes used by malware to stop you finding it, apparently. Try a scan with Defender Offline. You could also try scanning with ADWCleaner, then a scan with Malwarebyte (free).

AdwCleaner Download
Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes 3.0 Premium 14-day Free Trial

If any of the above find malware, take a note of what was found and let us know. There may be more that needs cleaning, depending on what you found.

Have you guys tried pressing the Windows + right button? It halves your window to half of the right side of the screen. Same for Windows + left. Windows + up maximizes any window, while Windows + down restores down any window.

These are convenient as the chair I sit upon. But one day...they stopped working.

I've checked everything about the keyboard in the control panel, nothing there. Neither does Acer have forums. What should I do??

Hi,

So suddenly today while rearranging windows, snapping stopped working.

I'm unable to snap windows using the Win + Left/Right/Up/Down. Moving the windows with the mouse still works, but not with the keyboard hotkeys. As you can imagine this is incredibly inconvenient as I snap windows with the keyboard all day.

If the window is selected the old alt+space hotkey still works, but that only allows me to max/min windows not move them around the screen.

This is what my current multitasking settings are set to:
I tried switching virtual desktops, but it persists across all desktops.

Of course I've tried restarting the computer, twice to no avail.
I'm also tried running the latest update, but alas that too hadn't changed anything.

Other keyboard shortcuts involving the windows key continue to work, ie I can open explorer with win+e, open run with win+r minimize all windows with win+d, win+[number] still opens the corresponding taskbar program, etc.

I've also tried using a different keyboard, I usually use an external keyboard but I tried using the built in keyboard as well as the virtual keyboard, neither yielded a different result.

I've already tried/looked at the following:
keyboard shortcuts with the windows key snap assist - Windows 10 Forums
Windows 7 UI aero snap features
Aero Snap - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer:Windows snapping keyboard shortcut hotkeys not working

Hi YoMan,

I was a little hesitant to respond as actually it seems as if your post is already quite old indeed (Nov 2015??? "Notice: This is an old thread. The last post was 215 days ago. If your post is not directly related to this discussion please consider making a new thread." :-) ) and apparently no one has taken the effort or has been able to respond to your question so far...?

Anyway, indeed the two of us might be experiencing the same problem currently on Windows 10. I was also a bit surprised after having 'upgraded' from Win7 to Win10 a few days ago that the keyboard shortcuts that I used to use in Win7 (or Win8 or 8.1, for that matter) didn't seem to work equally in Win10. To be specific, I found that it was still possible to "snap" a particular active window to the left or right side of the screen by using the "Win + Left" or "Win + Right" keyboard combinations. However, trying to then snap the still active window to the other side of the screen (e.g., from right to left) by alternating the arrow key while holding the Win key down apparently produced nothing (except from perhaps a brief 'nudge' to the left or right border of the active window, depending on whether it was snapped to the right resp. left side of the screen).

Thanks mainly to MS Support I 'discovered' (or, rather, was actually demonstrated by MS Support) the following 'workaround': when intending to snap the active window to the alternate (that is, either left... Read more

I first spot significant cracks on my keyboard bezel and ordered an onsite maintenance for my Thinkpad P50 to have the keyboard bezel changed. However, the color calibrator never comes back to work, and it showed the following messages before activating the software: "unable to find the Lenovo laptop display to be calibration. please run this application with the laptop screen in the open position". I contacted the Lenovo support and they ordered another onsite for me to change the wire unit between the color calibrator and the mobo. However, nothing changed. The technician and I checked the wire connection and found nothing wrong. The technician was highly doubted that the display cannot be correctly identified by the mobo, because it showed as "Generic PnP Monitor". I have no idea what does this means and how will it affect the color calibrator. We actually have the original color sensor unit installed on the new keyboard bezel, basic nothing changed. Can anyone help me with it? Hi there, hopefully this is a quick, easy-to-solve question:

Recently, out of the blue, my logitech g15 keyboard and g5 mouse will stop working any time someone switches user profiles on my computer (running XP 32bit, for the record). The LCD on the g15 will stay active but moving the mouse has no effect and pressing keys on the keyboard does nothing. The only way to make them work again is to unplug them and plug them back in. It's a fairly small problem but it's getting to be really annoying.

Please tell me if you need any further information... here is my dxdiag dump:

I've been asked to copy a shortcut to a website to everyone's desktops within a domain.

It's a mix of XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

I know it needs to be copied to All Users\Desktop or Public\Desktop.

What would be the best way to do this? I figure I can update the login scripts, but I'd have to play with the syntax to get it to do what I want, as I'm not sure how it'll work with the different operating systems. I'm sure there's a wildcard in there somewhere I can use.

Or should I be looking at Group Policy for it, and if so, where would I look?

Answer:Hopefully a simple thing: copy shortcut to all desktops in domain

psexec \\* -u domain\administrator -p password "\\server\copy.bat"

\\server\copy.bat:
Code:
set copypath="C:\Documents and Settings\All Users"
if exist not %copypath% (set copypath="C:\Users\Public")
copy \\server\file.url %copypath%\Desktop\file.url
Something like that should work.

Just setting up a new computer. Have a logitech receiver and wireless mouse + keyboard ... batteries in both are good (I checked with voltmeter).

So everything is fine and I'm setting up windows. I go to local security policy to disable the administrator account and then go to rename it, and find out my keys aren't working!! But for some odd reason, the shortcut buttons to calculator and internet explorer work just fine... just none of the keys (numbers or letters) work. cntrl alt del doesn't work.

So I try a keyboard that is from a working computer, and that won't work either. I'm really stumped. The USB ports should be fine as the MOUSE works fine (the wireless mouse and also other mouses work fine). The motherboard is brand new.
The working keyboard I tested doesn't seem to be even getting power on this new computer. Not sure why. I can't even get into the BIOS cause the keyboard doesn't work!

So here's a problem I just figured out how to fix. You install a fresh copy of Windows 7 and setup some custom keyboard shortcuts such as CTRL+ALT N for Notepad. You test it out and it works. Then after you reboot or log off, it stops working.

You can temporarily make it work again by removing the shortcut key and adding it back but after a reboot/log off, it stops working.

What gives? Well here's a workaround.
Go to Taskbarand Start Menu properties, Start Menu tab, under Privacy, enable the "Store and dispaly recently opened programs in the Start menu". For recent items, I left that uncheked but that's my personal preference.

What if I don't want the program to be listed in the start menu?
Here's the actual workaround, go to Customize and set the "number of recent programs to display" to zero. I also unchecked "Recent Items"

Now go reboot and your custom keyboard shortcuts should work properly! I use Notepad2 to completely replace the stock Notepad and its awesome for coding!

How did this problem happen? I think either before or after creating your keyboard shortcuts, you disabled the recent programs and it also disabled any custom shortcut keys you've applied. I think it somehow relies on this feature for it to work. I think MS should fix this. BTW: I'm on SP1 7601.17514.101119-1850

Currently I have a desktop shortcut to PuttyCyg (a modified version of PuTTY) which I have configured Ctrl+Alt+C as a keyboard shortcut to launch the program. Trouble is, once there is one instance of the program open, when I enter Ctrl+Alt+C again, instead of opening another instance of the program, it brings the window of the currently open instance to the front. This is strange, because when I actually click on the shortcut multiple times, the default behavior is to open multiple instances of the program. How can I change it so that hitting the keyboard shortcut forces new instances to open? Do I have to resort to things like writing a VBScript?

Hello!

I use my computer as a sometime HTPC. I have display 1 as my monitor in the computer room and I have display 2 as my 42" LCD in the other room. I ran a 30 ft hdmi cable in there, as well as a connection to the spdif.

Now, to switch from monitor to tv I have to:

Click on the speaker icon.
Select spdif
Select 'set as default.
Right click on the desktop
Resolution (or display settings or whatever)
select display 2
click OK
Run into the next room and click OK in 15 seconds or however long it gives me.

I was wondering, outside of using Ultramon, is there any quicker way to do the above. A shortcut or the possibility of building a macro or something?

Thanks!

I am running Windows Vista Business SP1 and Excel Enterprise 2007. I work in finance, so having all of Excel's keyboard shortcuts available is critical to me. I often use the shortcut [ctrl]+1, which pops up the "format cell" window. However, this shortcut does not work anymore for me. All my other [ctrl]+ shortcuts work well, however, so I am confused as to what is causing the problem.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I have a shortcut on the desktop. If you double click on it, it runs the target program just fine.
Under 'properties' I have tried assigning various shortcut keys like Ctrl+Alt+N and none of them work.
I have also deleted and recreated the desktop shortcut with no luck.
This was working a couple of months ago.

Answer:Shortcut keys not working for a desktop shortcut

Does the shortcut key actually show up in the shortcut itself or does the shortcut key not get saved? Try setting the shortcut key, and clicking okay/apply and opening the properties again to see if the key is saving.

It should look like this:

Hi. I recently purchased a Toshiba Satellite Click 2 Pro and at the top, two of the keys increase/decrease the screen brightness (much like two of the keys at the top of a Mac do the same). Well, I discovered that if I press the key to decrease the screen brightness too quickly and bring it down all the way to the lowest brightness and keep clicking, it turns off the keyboard! As in, none of the keyboard keys will work anymore.

The only way I know of to fix it is to restart the keyboard. I'm wondering if there's a way to 1) disable the fact that it does this, and 2) find a way to turn the keyboard back on without restarting the computer, since it is, quite frankly, annoying when I have three word documents and about 10 browser tabs open. I can't figure out how to disable/stop this one key by using the keyboard settings/ toggling the hotkeys/etc.
Honestly, I'm not even sure if this is a Windows 8 issue or Toshiba issue. Has anyone else had this problem?

Answer:Keyboard shortcut locks up keyboard (Toshiba Satellite)

If under warranty, return this to the store ASAP for replacement/repair. There's not much we can recommend you do, hardware-wise, that you can do and not void the warranty.

I suspect the keyboard may be sticking,,, you can try another USB KB for troubleshooting though. Plug in the USB KB and see if that behavior is duplicated using that KB.

I am totally bemused by this, someone please point me in the right direction. I am having trouble manipulating desktops and icons!

I have three users on my PC: me (Paul) as administrator, my wife (Pauline) and son Harry. We all have our own desktops and all I want to do is to make the icons on each apposite to us as individuals. For example, we all want a Yahoo icon and Google Earth Icons, whilst I want my trainsimming programme icons, my wife her Chinese application icons and Harry his icons for his school work.

However, we all seem to have varied mixes of everyones icons. How do I delete off one, add to another etc without deleting the lot. If I delete the chinese icons off my desktop, it deletes them from Pauline's desktop as well. I understand that there are different directories in my PC called "Desktop" but these dont seem to correspond to anything. For example when I go into windows explorer, the top line is "Desktop" with 80 files in it. One of these is called "Paul" which has another directory called "Desktop" with 55 files in it. When I go into "Users" I have yet another directory called "Desktop", this time with 54 files, Pauline has a similar direcrory with 23 files and Harry with 4 files.

If I open each desktop in turn, mine displays 76 icons, Pauline's 43 and Harry's 26. ie nothing corresponds anwhere!

Thus, I have found on my PC 4 directories called Desktop containing 80, 55, 54 and 23 fil... Read more

Answer:Help in working with desktops and icons

Hi Paul,

First, to add a new icon to the desktop from a program file, you right click on it and click Send To and then click Desktop (shortcut icon) and it's done. If this option is not available to you, post back and I provide tutorials which will assist you in adding it back (it's normally there by default so I don't know precisely how you lost it). To maybe simplify things, here's that procedure if you need it: Send To Context Menu.

Second, each user has a folder called C:\Users\<username>\Desktop which contains their personal desktop icons. In addition, each user can select the Windows icons they want on their desktop by going to Start / Control Panel / Personalize / Desktop Icons and then choosing which or all of the five they want on their desktops. Finally, every user gets icons from C:\Users\Public\Desktop. These are typically for installed programs you want everyone to have on the desktop when installed (it sometimes asks and sometimes just does it depending on the program). When you view the icons in Users/Desktop you are only seeing those associated with your personal desktop (in the Users folder of your personal profile), not the ones in the All Users profile (which explains why you have more on your Desktop then in your Users/Desktop listing). When you look at the top level Desktop in your directory you are seeing the combination of icons on the desktop (which is why it is larger than what appears in your User folder because it shows those from A... I keep 2 virtual desktops, one for my personal applications and the other for official work.
I have multiple windows of Google Chrome on both the desktops, some excel windows, PDF files etc.

Whenever my computer wakes from sleep, the entire arrangement gets messed up and I have to manually drag back the windows into their respective desktops.

This is a very annoying issue. Any way to solve this?

Hi, I have a problem with W10 virtual desktops.

I'll explain it step by step :

Go to virtual desktop 1
Open full windowed Chrome
Go to virtual desktop 2
Open two different full windowed excels
Hit windows-tab

And you end up in this mess i'm attaching as a screenshot.

If you click on destktop 3 icon, you'll be there, but excel will be shown, full windowed, as if you were on desktop 2.
If you then minimize it, it goes to the desktop 2 taskbar.
If you click on desktop 1 icon, you'll get there, but excels will be shown instead of Chrome. If you put the mouse over desktop 1 icon and then click Chrome above virtual desktops, you'll get to desktop 1 with Chrome being shown as normal.

If you close one of the two excels, virtual desktops works again as expected.

What can I test to solve this mess?

Thanx a lot, I've been expecting a fix in every new compilation, with no luck.

Hi

When I reboot, my USB keyboard seems to switch itself off midway through the boot process. As a result, I can't log on to Windows (i.e. can't enter a password). Here's how it works:

- Press the start button on the PC
- The green light on the keyboard comes on
[-- If I press Del now, the BIOS config screen loads properly and the keyboard works fine for now]
- The Windows logo appears on the screen
- The green light on the keyboard goes out
- The XP Home login screen comes up
- Keyboard doesn't work, but USB Mouse does.

Setup is Windows XP Home Edition with Microsoft USB keyboard

I tried starting in safe mode, but pressing F8 (while the keyboard is operational) just fills up the keyboard buffer and then the system boots to Windows normally.

Anybody got any ideas about this. I'd be extremely grateful for any suggestions at all.

Answer:USB Keyboard switching off

Perhaps you could use another keyboard and change them as soon as you're in the OS. But I'm not exactly sure if Plug&Play works for keyboards and mouse on USB.

Hello all,

I installed my Windows 8 preview with an USB keyboard that is now broken.
I replaced it by a logitech PS/2 keyboard I had around.

That logitech keyboard works well while in the BIOS. But as soon as windows finishes starting, the keyboard is unusable. the numlock led is lit but doesnt switch off if I press numlock. It works when connected to my laptop.

I tried to uninstall the USB keyboard in system and reboot : same problem.
Tried to scan for hardware changes but nothing is found.
Tried adding a legacy device, but keyboard drivers are not included.

any ideas ?

Answer:Switching USB to PS/2 Keyboard fails ?

Hi there
you can get a USB==>2 PS/2 sockets adaptor. Very cheap -- around 2 - 3 USD for the cheaper ones.

I use this sometimes because I prefer the old IBM keyboard -- White keys with black letters -- much more readable than the 99.999% of modern Black keyboards with white letters.

You don't have to plug a ps/2 mouse in -- just plug the keyboard slot in.

Here's a link. Amazon UK have these but I'm sure they can be sourced elsewhere too.

Hey guys, I got my new Y580 about 6 month ago and I LOVE it! However, about 1 week ago strange things started to happen... The Symptoms after pressing the power button:When I switch the computer on, the keyboard lightens up as usual, but that's it. Nothing else happens.There are no booting sounds (in regard to "the black screen of death" I've read about - that's definitely not the problem here, I also work with an additional external monitor).The USB-devices have no power.The monitor (including the external one) does not show anything, not even any BIOS output. As far as I can tell, it is not even active.The CPU fan seems to be rotating very slowly so the CPU gets quite hot when I leave it like that for 5 minutes or so.After struggling for some time and switching it on, waiting a few minutes, switching it off and back on and waiting over and over again (tried over 3 hours yesterday...) it suddenly starts working again. But not directly after pressing the power button but after leaving it alone for a minute or two after switching it on.When the system is booted, everything works like a charm.What I have tried:Remove the battery and unplug the AC, press the power button for 30 seconds, release it, press for 30 seconds again, plug the AC back in and switch it on.Working only with the AC.Working only with the battery.Unplug all peripherals (monitor, USB).But nothing helped... I'm running Linux on a mSATA and Windows on the "normal" HDD. I did not make any hard... Read more

Click this imgur image above to understand what I am talking about

I made some shortcuts to things like web sites and files.

I hit the window key and microsoft onenote and files come up. I really want files to show up on top because that is where my cursor (not the right word?) starts. This forces me to have to scroll down to files and click on the right shortcut which almost defeats the purpose of having a shortcut that can be accessed rapidly with a shortcut

Let's say my shortcut is "electronics youtube channel"
Unfortunatley if the words electronics youtube channel are somewhere in oneote, onenote will appear on top like in the picture. Now I must scroll down or move my cursor to Files whereas if Files was on top, then the name of the shortcut "electronics youtube channel" woudl have been on the top, I could have just pushed enter

If electronics youtube channel words don't show up in onenote, there is no Microsoft Onenote in the picture so Files appears first on top and the shortcut is usually the first thing that I am on. Then I can simply push the enter button and go to the shortcut.

Basically here is the summary of the entire post:
- I want to just go to a website or a document without having to move my mouse or click on things on the desktop. I want to hit the windows button, type the name of the shortcut to that website or document, have it appear on the top of the start menu because I remember what I called the shorcut and I ... Question: Keyboard Shortcut?

I'd like to assign a keystroke to one of my mouse buttons that will launch Windows Explorer.

The Windows key + E launches computer in Windows Explorer which would be fine. However, Logitech SetPoint Settings wont let me map the Windows key.

Another option was to create a shortcut of "computer" on the desktop and then right click>properties and make a custom keystroke assignment for that shortcut. Problem with that is, the shortcut has to be actually on the desktop for it to work. I don't want that either.

So, any suggestions would be awesome. I know I'm probably missing something simple. Thanks in advance.

Is there any way in Windows 7 that I could set up a keyboard shortcut that would paste a short predefined text field at the point of the cursor?

Answer:How can I set up a keyboard shortcut.

Welcome LeeInMo. It's actually quite easy with AutoHotkey. You can write a simple script to paste a line of text when you press a key combo, such as Ctrl+D, etc. (just don't use keys that windows uses like Ctrl+c, tec. )

AutoHotkey

AutoHotkey Tutorial: Macro and Hotkey Creation

for instance, you can use a letter not used by windows that starts your sentence

^i::
Send I want to put this text here (Just an example, the bold area would be the text string you desire)
return

or

^l::
Send Leave the door open when you leave (Just an example, the bold area would be the text string you desire)
return

You can string several together if you have several lines of text you use often, you just have to remember what the hotkey combo is

^i::
Send Install the font
return
^l::
Send Life is a beach
return
^s::
Send Ship to customer
return
^m::
Send Modify as needed
return
^g::
Send Golfballs have dimples
^r::
Send Request more information

Send Always talk to your manager first

I have Windows 7 on my computer. Generally in order to shut down the computer you have to click Start and ?shut down?. Does anyone know of a KEYBOARD shortcut (i.e., where you would press a combination of keys) for shutting down the computer? Thank you very much. Murrar

Answer:keyboard shortcut

Hi Murrar,
Push and hold Alt and f4 at the same time in till a window pops up and you will have a few options

hey just a little curisoity...is it possible to create a 4 key keyboard shortcut?

the reason...i want to use my keyboard to shutdown my computer and dont accidentaly want to hit it....

BTW i already have a short cut on my desktop(gonna move that somewhere DEEP...
EDIT is there any way to make a two letter one like say i want to use ctrl + W + Z is there any way to do that?

Answer:4 key keyboard shortcut

There's a 3 key shortcut already. Note: do not keep each key pressed when you press the next one. Press one, release it..press the next, release it..etc..Windows Logo Key > U > UIf you notice when you hit the Windows Logo Key (and the Start Menu comes up), the u in "Turn off computer" is underlined. Pressing U does the action that has U underlined (like hitting Alt + some letter in any application). Hit U again, the u in "Turn off" is also underlined, so it performs that action (shutdown). Pressing R here instead of U would do a Restart.Note: The letters you have to hit to do this vary by version of Windows....the way you access "Power Button Actions" for Vista and Windows 7 are slightly different.

Answer:Pc switching on but monitor and keyboard not powering up.

What's the brand name and model name and model number of that computer?

It's obvious it's a desktop and not a laptop, so also advise the brand name and model number and wattage of its power supply.

What version and bit version of Windows is it running?

Hello everyone, I have a technical question. I'm new to Thinkpad and just bought a new T520. (was going to get T530 but read about the fan noise issue which seems not resolved yet). I found myself disliking the traditional style T520 keyboard.  I keep hitting the red dot when typing "g",my finger nails, though short, tend to scratch the lower part of neighboring keys (ex). "u" when I type "j")I've been a blind typer for 15 yrs and this keyboard requires too much nerve & energy. Anyhow, do you know if I can switch the T520's keyboard with T530's w/out problem?I know I can buy T530's keyboard online but I have to be sure before I do. I read somewhere on Google, might have to change the BIOS.And my local Lenovo tech. dealer said he's never done it but he's not sure if the cables are the samefor T520 & T530. If a Lenovo's Sr. moderator would have any info., I would very much appreciate it! thank you!

I have 2 XP Pro OS's on my PC which work fine except every time I switch the
Keyboard Elite for Bluetooth has to be removed and reinstalled for it to
work. The mouse continues to work throughout. The appropriate drivers have
been installed. The KB shows in the devices but is immobilised.
Any ideas how to stop this behaviour?

So just got my yoga 2 pro, I think it a great machine. But its having issues when changing modes and with the touchscreen. Every now and then the touchscreen wont respond. So I just open and close the laptop and when I log back in its working again. Other times when I change it to tablet mode the on screen key board doesnt come up automatically, and when I switch back the physical keyboard doesnt respond anymore. And to top that off the Auto rotate doesnt seem to be working at  all. Any help anyone can provide would be graeatly appriciated!

A convenient shortcut has stopped working. Formerly pressing Shift + 1 sent the cursor to the right hand end of the line.
Shift + 7 sent the cursor to the left hand end of the line.
This has stopped working both in Word 2000 and in OE6.
Would appreciate advice.
And in general would appreciate being pointed to a source of keyboard shortcuts and instructions on how to install them.
Thank you.
