Win 10 x64 . . . Wake from sleep, no Wake . . . hard restart . . . .

Question: Win 10 x64 . . . Wake from sleep, no Wake . . . hard restart . . . .

. . . Macrium Reflect "fix boot errors" is saving my A**!
Between updates, on Wake from Sleep, no Wake . . .. requires hard start . . . spinning dots . . . no boot . . . requires my Macrium Reflect intervention disk . . . "fix boot errors" . . . . System then actually does Start . . .
Anyone else . . . ? What is going on?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My PC is fairly new and I'm having problems with slow shutdowns/restarts and slow sleep/wakes. Recently it seems to fail waking altogether and restarts after a while instead. Usually during waking I just have a black screen for a long time before the reset/restart but sometimes I see the Windows log-in screen but it's unresponsive.
The problem predates my CPU undervolting and doesn't seem to change when I switch RAM settings back to Auto instead of XMP (I my RAM necessitates some kind of overclock in order to function at its rated speed).

Can anyone advise how to proceed? Thanks.

I am new here. Hoping someone can help me out with this issue. I work in IT so am not a complete computer bonehead and am at my wits end with this.

My laptop is about 4 years old, it's a toshiba. For whatever reason, it started taking 5+ minutes to wake up from sleeping. If it sleeps for an hour, it's OK.. but if you leave it sleep all night and try to wake it up in the morning, it's quite cranky. After the 5+ minute wake up, it performs as normal. It was running Windows 7 Home 32 bit.

Troubleshooting steps that I have taken are as follows.

Reinstalled windows. Issue was resolved! but after about 2-3 weeks, issue came back. I thought maybe it was some type of windows update, so I reinstalled windows again and paid closer attention to the updates. Issue presented itself again after 2-3 weeks, and there were no updates immediately done prior to it starting.

I started to think maybe it was something related to my hard drive, so i performed laptop surgery and swapped out my original hard drive with a solid slate drive, and installed windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit (this laptop can support 64 bit so I figured why not upgrade.).

issue again was resolved for a few weeks, and now it's back to taking 5+ minutes to wake up again.

If you're turning the laptop on from scratch, it takes 10-15 seconds tops. if you're restarting, it's 10-15 seconds tops (man, I love SSD...)... if you're waking itup within the hour, its 1-2 seconds. But anything longer then that, 5+ minutes.

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 with WinXPPro SP3, 2GB RAM and an Intel Core 2 Duo E4600, and it is unreliable for Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring. I also wonder whether my Standby - Sleep - Suspend (S1 or S3) is working correctly.

When the PC is in Standby - Sleep - Suspend mode (S1 or S3), Wake on LAN and Wake on Ring work some of the time but not all of the time, and I'd like them to be 100% reliable.

These may be two different problems, but your advice will be appreciated. (Also, if I should post in a different forum, please advise.)

My Network Card is an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection, and I recently upgraded its drivers using "generic" PROXP.exe from the Intel website, although this has not helped the problem. The specific driver file e1e5132.sys is now from 2009 -- it used to be from 2007. But, as I say, Wake on LAN from Standby was not and is still not reliable, both before and after the driver update.

In Settings .. Network Connections ... Local Area Connections ... Properties ... Configure ... Power Management, all the Wake on LAN options are checked ON:

- Wake on Directed Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet
- Wake on Magic Packet from Power Off State
- Wake on Link

The NIC card's Diagnostic checks are all OK.

My fax modem card is a Conexant D850 PCI V.92 Modem, and I have the most recent drivers dated 7/27/07, version In Settings ... Phone and Modem Options ... Modems ... Properties, "Allow this device to bring... Read more

More to above: Dell has suggested I must re-install Windows. I've never done that, and I realize I'd probably lose all my applications and data - no good. Seems to me that's like using an atomic bomb to kill a mosquito. And why should I assume that will work?

But is there a way to re-install -- or maybe fix -- Windows that leaves everything else safe?

FYI - About a month or so ago, I ran SFC (System File Checker) in repair mode, and that didn't help with this problem.

Any ideas?

I have a U430 touch which worked fine with Windows 8.1 until some update caused problems with waking from sleep. Now on wake from sleep the computer restarts itself (no crach log after this happens) I tried to upgrade to Windows 10 but this did not solve the problem and I tried suggested solutions to various other sleep problems (e.g. installing an older IMEI version, setting devices no to wake the computer, turning off fast startup, etc. and nothing seems to work). Help with this would be very much appreciated! It is very annoying not to have a sleep function on the computerThanks!Aya

Hello to everyone, I have a HP p7-1417cb that was bundled with the HP 2711x monitor.  The past few months I've had intermintant issues with the monitor not wanting to "wake up" after sleep or a restart.  The monitor will come on and will scan the DVI/HDMI sources but won't find anything and will go back to sleep. Thanksfully the computer is still under warranty (I purchased in December 2012 from Sam's Club and opted for the 3 year extended warranty and if you are a plus member you get an extra year for free so in essence I have until Dec 2016) and has been back for service 4 times.  I just got it back and all they did was reload software.  I can do that!! Anyway, I have tried a different DVI cable without luck.  I tried a HDMI cable using a DVI adaptor.  No luck.  I tried a different monitor with a DVI cable without success.  I tried a VGA cable to a Samsung TV using the PC port and it worked.  The Asurion people are simply reloading software.  Maybe this computer can't use Windows 10?  They claim it's Windows 10 causing the issues.  It shipped with Windows 8 - upgraded to Windows 8.1 with the Pro Pack.  Ungraded to Windows 10 when it became available to comsumers and since I had the Pro version, it gave me Windows 10 Pro.  NO issues up until a few months ago.  The computer has the Radeon HD 7660D (integrated of course) video card and haven't found any updates. When I put my computer in sleep mode, it won't 'wake up'. I have to manually turn off the computer and then start it up again. This has happened twice. Hi,I'm using T400, I installed win 7 again recently and the Lenovo drivers for my system,Ever since I installed Lenovo drivers I'm having few problems:My system won't shut down- just "shutting down" win 7 message   for a  very long time.Sometimes my system will not wake up from sleep, it making noises like it is going to wake up but then       the noise stops and again the same noise in loop until I'm performing a hard reboot .While on sleep I can hear the system restarting on it own, sometimes numerous times. Pleasehelp

Answer:Sleep wake up, shutting down and restart problems

hey inspector_60could you uninstall all Lenovo software that you have installed.then see if you have the same issue.if you have the same issue, then run msconfig and turn off all startup program except windows startup items and try again. this is to determine if something in the startup might be causing the issue.

Has anyone found a magic keystroke combination for "Sleep" or is there anyway to create one? I know about Win+I then Power then Sleep.

Has anyone found an option to stop scheduled tasks or other triggers that "Wake" your computer from sleep? I find my computer running in the morning after putting it to sleep at the end of the previous evening! I have reviewed all 41 scheduled tasks created by Windows and installed applications and "apps" and found none that have the Wake Computer check box checked. What's annoying is the fact that once woken the computer does not go back to sleep again! I am using the supplied balanced Power plan. Any advice?

Answer:Windows 8 Sleep, Wake, Restart and Shutdown

I use this approach to the various "power" options. Check your wake on lan settings in Device Manager > for your various network adapters. Also, check wan on lan setting in BIOS or, I suppose, UEFI.

I'm using Logitech's latest LGS for my G700. It's very annoying that I have to exit and restart LGS when my system comes out of sleep or LGS doesn't recognize the mouse as being awake (windows drives it then). This happens when the mouse is running wirelessly. It also happens across versions.

Is there a way to create a task in TS that will exit and restart LSG upon the wake event before or at logon?

Answer:Using Task Scheduler to restart a program upon wake from sleep

Here is a trigger (Custom Event Filter) for a scheduled task I have that might help you.
It runs when the PC wakes from sleep or resumes from hibernate.
Here is the source text for the Event Filter XML

<Query Id="0" Path="System">
<Select Path="System">*[System[Provider[@Name='Microsoft-Windows-Power-Troubleshooter'] and (Level=4 or Level=0) and (EventID=1)]]</Select>
You would need to add actions to:
1) kill the task for the running program
2) start the program

Hope this helps,

G'day All,

First post here - been having this problem for a few months now - developed a work around, but it's starting to get under my skin now.. Mainly because the system does it's updates at night, which means that my PC stays on (after BSOD) and usually keeps the screen on as well, which wakes me up eventually, or keeps the house hot (who cares, anyway.)

I've been reading the forums & trying to work it out myself, except the error code changes depending on what I'm doing..

I've attached the current BSOD grab, hopefully it gives enough information, and I've run the FurMark - and the display driver crashed (as usual - I'm starting to think it might be a faulty Graphics card..)

Enough of my chatter - let me know if it's something simple

I have 4 Internal HDDs installed, 3 are SATA and 1 IDE, Whenever I wake my PC from a hybrid sleep the IDE drive no longer responds (slave drive) It causes explorer to freeze for awhile as it tries to access and the HD light stays lit until I reboot the PC.

Also Im unable to shutdown properly or reboot when this happens, I have to do a hard reset or hold the power button. (attempting to do a normal restart / shutdown always gets stuck at "logging off").

I never use to have this problem before, it seems to of started after I enabled Intel AHCI in my bios recently, but I didnt think this would effect an IDE drive? The drive works fine before the PC goes to sleep and no SMART errors are reported in HD Tune etc.

Any ideas appreciated.

Answer:One of my hard drives wont wake from Hybrid sleep.

If you used the intel controller to set it to AHCI mode - did you install this driver from the gigaybyte site it will update the AHCI driver and should provide correct functionality- Intel SATA RAID Driver - - GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1366 - GA-EX58-UD3R (rev. 1.6) i think its the latest version or equivalent version of the Intel Rapid Storage driver which is needed even when you dont have raid enabled. Note Im not 100% sure here as i have no gigabyte board and i cant unpack the driver to check it.

You could also update to the latest driver for your video card - long shot fix.

Otherwise Switch back to ide mode - AHCI is only usefull for hot swapping hard drives - if you have no need there is no speed difference as most modern hard drives have this enabled automatically. W7 should find the original driver upon rebooting if you just reset from AHCI to IDE mode in the bios.

If you used the microsoft fix, to be sure of success, follow this path in the registry : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci - then right click start - modify and change from 0 to 3 - then go to bios and reset back to IDE mode and reboot.

I'm new to sevenforums and would appreciate the help of some of you. I have updated my user profile with all of the details and specs of my system that is having my issue.

Recently, my computer will not wake up from sleep mode. Once it enters sleep mode, the only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button, completely shut it off, and then boot my system back up.

It appears as if everything starts back up once I open the lid or press the power button to wake it up, but the screen never turns back on. The fan starts up, the backlit keyboard lights up, the leds all blink, but nothing I try will turn the screen back on forcing me to press and hold the power button for a complete shut down.

I have reinstalled the latest Intel HD Graphics driver as well as the latest NVIDIA graphics driver (both the stable and beta release).

I do not get a blue screen or any sort of error. Upon the restart, I am not prompted with any error from windows or any signs of the forced shut down. I have been messing with this issue for a few days now and am asking for some help from the community here at sevenforums. If you need any additional info let me know.

If you put your machine to sleep, then all programs are suspended, so there is absolutely no point in leaving them "running". Most especially not if this causes errors on waking.

Ever since I've installed a second hard drive in my T410, a Hitachi 250GB drive, my machine fails to wake from sleep (sometimes)... Then I have to do a hard reset. I had the same problem without the 2nd drive when I tried to use the HD Password in the BIOS and found out that it was something to do with the Crucial M4 drive I'm using. But this same problem is now happening ever since using the 2nd drive slot. Any ideas? I really like the extra storage space and don't want to remove it based on this problem.

I've started to have a number of debilitating problems with my lumia 950, which is a shame because they are the same problems that made me leave android for the WP platform. To start off, my phone has been randomly restarting. The restarting seems to have started after the anniversary update version 1607. There's nothing common between one reset to the next, just that they become more frequent as battery life reduces (starts at around 80%). This is also sometimes accompanied by a streak yellow across the screen. I don't know if this is relevant or not.
My second issue, which has been happening the longest, is that the screen will sometimes be completely off when I wake up the phone. I will put the phone into sleep with the power button, and when I wake it up with the power button the screen is black. I know the phone is awake because windows hello will try to sign me in. I have reason to believe that the touch digitizer is also still working. This is fixed either by trying to sleep cycle the phone or by holding down the power button until the phone prompts me to power it off. This seems to wake the screen up. the screen also sometimes wakes up when windows hello signs me in, but this is rare. This problem has become less frequent since the anniversary update.
My third problem is that sometimes the touch digitizer doesn't work on wake. This is similar to my last problem, except that it always goes away by sleep cycling my phone. This problem has also become less prominent ... Read more

Hello. I'm looking at this laptop:

I would like to know if it has wake on LAN and wake on RTC or not.

Answer:Solved: Dell Inspiron 15 3000 Series - Wake on LAN & Wake on RTC?

Since I did not get an answer here, I went ahead and ordered the machine anyway, and took a chance. It does NOT have either feature in it.

It passed my other tests, so I'm keeping it and the next computer I get will probably have both of those features, but for this one, I guess I'll live without, since the network isn't finished to the point where I could actually use it anyway yet.

Whether I choose any option other than to turn PC off, instead of tapping spacebar on my MS wireless keyboard I have to tap the button for power on the tower, then the monitor turns on as the fan runs, but always a black screen. So then I have to do a manual boot and select to start normally.
Started a week ago, around the same time as a graphics card failure. I installed a new PNY GeForce, updated ALL drivers on my Gateway DX4710-UB301A, (Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit, AVG antivirus free 2014) played with power management and startup config settings, trolled forums, performed malware scans, and still can't figure out the issue.
Please help!

I have an issue with the sleep function. The computer does not awake from sleep. When I try to do it, it behaves as if it was waking, but it never ends and there is only a black screen; the mouse and keyboard are inoperative. The only thing possible to do is a hard reboot. When it boots, it shows a notice with a minute report (in the zip file) usually saying there was a blue screen, but I NEVER see any blue screen at all.

I know the power configuration is OK because I have always used the same scheme. A powercfg ?energy report shows several errors and warnings. They refer to USB and PCI (vendor 1002=ATI motherboard), but I don?t know how to repair them.

I downloaded the drivers downloader from and downloaded and installed the drivers. They are all Broadcom Corporation signed, the brand of my USB Bluetoth attachment. I rebooted after installing, as recommended. Run powercfg ?energy again and got the same report issues (in the zip file). I don?t think the processor utilization warnings to be very important because they are low and sporadic picks. It has been like this for some time now, so I don?t have a restore point. Can someone help and tell me what I can do so solve this issue, please?

Files uploaded in the attached zip:
. Windows warning after reboot
. Windows dump and xml files (2 = 1 each)
. Powercfg -energy report
I wanted to correct the thread title, but was unable to do it. Maybe someone else can do it.

Answer:No Wake From Sleep BlockedI have an issue with the sleep function. T

Quite confident it's a driver issue, it will be very difficult to troubleshoot from the one included dump file though as it's incomplete and inconclusive.

I've been running Windows 7 Ultimate for the better part of a year now. For about the last week or so now, my computer is going in to (what I assume is) sleep mode at the most inopportune moments. No amount of anything will wake the computer from its sleep - not the keyboard, mouse, ethernet activity (which should keep it from falling asleep in the first place) - only a hard reboot will bring my PC back to a state where I can use it.

Some of the things I've tried, so that people don't answer with "change your power plan settings" or some such thing. If it was that easy, I wouldn't be here asking for help. I'll restate that I've been using the same Win7 Ultimate install on the same PC for a year now, and it's only in the last week this has been happening.

Anyways, I have:
Verified all my power plan settings;
Disabled any screen saver;
This is an older desktop, not a laptop, so hibernate and hybrid sleep options are not even present. Nevertheless, I've followed this guide and this one for disabling both.
Used device manager to specify my keyboard, mouse, and ethernet card as "wake up" devices. Also used the command line to manually set these as "wake from any state", only to have them all not work.
Tried changing group policy and eliminating sleep/hibernate from the user group.
As I said, it's only been doing this for a week or so now. All my drivers are current. All my system updates are current. I haven't installed any new software. I was ... Read more

Hi All,
My boss just bought a XPS 15 9550 last September.  There are a few cases each week that it does not wake up from sleep.  All drivers are up to date.  I did an online check with Dell for hardware check and all seems fine.
The computer goes into some state that the screen is black, the computer is running and there is nothing else but holding the power button down to restart it.

It's frustrating.

Thank you for writing to us!
We would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused.
In this case we would suggest you to update the BIOS to the latest version. Also update the chipset drivers on the system ( un-install -> restart system -> install ).

Hoping someone can help me with this.

I installed 7RC a couple of months ago. Since then whenever my pc sleeps I can not wake it up. It used to wake up fine in XP.

To get it going again I have to cold reboot or pull the plug. When it comes back up everything I was doing is still there, I just have to enter my password.

I think I have all the settings right but if someone could run me through everything that needs to be set I'd be really grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Guys/Gals

Never use sleep function but last night instead of selecting shutdown hit sleep by mistake. Couldn't get system to wake from sleep and had to turn off by holding power button.

Today when switching system back on i get fan & case lights on , hdd and dvd activity. The keyboard is unresponsive (no lights) and monitor remains in stand by. Mouse gets power but doesn't wake pc.

Using reset or power button on case just restarts system to exact condition above.

Can't contact pc manufacturer til monday (pc 4 months old). Read quite a few other posts regarding vista sleep issues but haven't found anything that would seem to rectify this problem.

Any comments/tips gratefully recieved

Answer:Can't Wake PC From Sleep

Well I'm a beginner but I had a lesser important case than yours. I found you interupt a process of sleep if you try to wake it before about 5 seconds. Anyway, there are a couple of things you can try.

Unplug the power cord and plug it back in.

Pull out the wall socket thingy and put it back in.

Try doing something like booting into safe mode if you can.
The pc maybe still functioning but the monitor can't interact with it. Once you try to boot it, keep pressing F8 for about 10 seconds and then press enter. See if anything happens.

Could also be a shortcircut or something. Other people have had a similar problem.

So it sleeps no bother normally but it seems that if my htpc has woken it with a wol magic packet, it will not go back to sleep , ever unless manually put to sleep. Rebooting and automatic sleep works again. I recently reinstalled windows and have looked atvevery setting I can think of. Including unattended sleep timeoutvin gpedit which I have tried not config and set to one min. Powercfg shows nothing.

Answer:no sleep after wake on lan

I have been searching the internet and it seems that this situation is unique.

To clarify, sleep works fine but if the computer is woken with a magic packet from any source it does not then go back to sleep after inactivity. Even the monitor stays on.

In gpedit I have tried disabling allow applications to prevent sleep under power options with no change.

Anybody got any ideas, this is driving me crackers!

Hi group,When my PC (HP Pavilion) goes into "idle" - when I'm not using it - it will not wake back up. I get no video, and sometimes my mouse will not wake up either. When I disconnect my power cord and reconnect the computer, I am able to boot up and things work. The computer works fine as long as I don't let it go to idle. For example, when I shut it down, it will boot up fine the next time. This just started happening recently after two updates: one from Norton, and the other from Quicken. I have no idea whether one of these caused the problem. I keep my PC well-maintained with all the latest updates. I have run the power troubleshooter, as well as the updates troubleshooter, and both detected no problems. Open to any ideas you may have,Thanks,Jeff

Hello Eight Forums,

New HP Notebook. One month power on. W8.1 64bit

Setup with Classic Shell and Fast Startup Off

Have to decide next week. If I should return for new machine exchange or keep with two known issues.

1) Sleeps on timer okay. Just cannot wake from Sleep. Tap space bar. Black screen goes gray. Times to black.
Noticed ethernet lite not on. Plug is clear plastic with white led normally on and on during startup.

Suspect power to NIC not satisfied so, no wake from Sleep. Have to force shutdown. Startup is normal. Forced shutdown is not flagged prompting startup options.

2) igfx Tray Module has stopped working pops dialog box on some startups.

HP and I have been round and round. HP wants me to contact Microsoft. We all know that's not fun. HP is bad enough. Always leaving remote session with machine worse for the experience.

HP went through settings and drivers. HP un-installed, re-installed over-installed and updated drivers till they were exhausted. Using HP Support Assistant and pulling soft paks from
Then came the requisite System Recovery. Then came more BS.

Yesterday, after a Device Manager graphics driver un-install / install. Windows Update offered it's two cents with an Intel HD Graphics update.

I can return to Staples for new same machine. No harm. No foul. No cost. New warranty period.

Machine worked no issues afaik for two weeks. Then BIOS and UEFI manual pull updates via HP Support Assistant. No issues.... Read more

Hi, I was wondering if anybody has had this problem before?

My computer was put to sleep earlier on today, and I moved the mouse to turn it back on. The power light went from orange (sleep mode) to blue (powered on). Nothing was displayed on the machine. Bashed some buttons, nothing happened, so did a hard reboot.

The power button went red (which happens if I hard reboot it) then to blue but that's it. The fans and hard drive starts going, but no beeps, no POST, no display. Nothing.

Already, I've tried:

- Reseating my RAM sticks - nothing
- Unplugging the hard drive - bf actually broke a sata slot, although he says it was lose before. The pins are not straight now and I can't get the black slot back onto the mobo. Plugged hard drive into sata 2 slot, still get no reaction.

Anything else I can try?

Answer:Can't wake up from sleep.

Try clearing CMOS, see if that helps.

Hello IndianinIA,

I wonder if that was caused by your network driver. Try uninstalling and reinstalling that driver, e1e6032e.sys, and make sure that you get the latest version.

I have a new computer with Vista Home Basic. If I set it to "sleep" for short periods there is no problem. The power button light flashes and if I press the button the PC resumes where I left off. However if I leave it in sleep mode for a long time, eg overnight, the PC will not awake and I have to turn the mains power off and on and reboot. The PC suppliers say that with modern computers and programs sleep should not be used for long periods. Seems strange. If I want to continue in the morning where I left off in the evening what can I do? Should I use hybernate? How does that work?

Answer:Sleep - can't wake up!

It may be considered unwise to leave your PC on for long periods when unused. The PC is still `live` electrically and is using power, still `warm` and accessible. As a result, there is the risk of damage from electrical power `spikes`, perhaps fire could result and of course it is not particularly `green`.Whether there is a real problem with it not resuming after long periods of inactivity or whether this is a `feature` of the OS I have no idea. But, it would seem reasonable for it to resume unless there is some form of software problem; bad graphics drivers have been known to cause this kind of anomaly in XP.

I am using a wake on lan app on my ipod so i can wake my computer from sleep. Im running into a problem though. When i go into configure my network adapter, and go to the power management tab, if "allow the computer to turn of this device to save power" is unchecked, the app works, but when the computer comes back on it cant connect to the internet, if it is checked, the app doesnt work, but when the computer turns back on the internet works. Any ideas on how to solve this problem, so the internet will work when it wakes and the app will work, thanks!

Answer:help with sleep / wake on lan

Actually i dont think the internet is working with either setting. After short periods, like 5 minutes or less, the internet still works, but after longer periods, when i wake it the network has limited connectivity or doesnt work entirely.

I try hitting the power button, nothing. I have to restart, it takes a long time to read the hd's in bios, then when it restarts there is no network connection, so I need to restart again.

no real pattern to this, sometimes I leave the machine on all night and no problems, other times just a couple hours and it happens.

I am also using a wireless mouse/kb if that makes a difference.

Since installing SP1 my computer has been acting like a one year old. When I put it to sleep at night it keeps waking and then goes to sleep only to wake again. Left untouched it went through this cycle all night. Starts 20 seconds after I put it to sleep and stays on for 2 minutes and then goes to sleep for 20 seconds then wake for two minutes etc etc etc.I disconnected a flash drive that I had in a USB port.
I disabled "wake timers" under Sleep in Power Options
I disabled "allow this device to wake the computer" in the properties of the USB wireless mouse
In the properties for the network adapter under the "Advanced" tab I disabled the "Wake on Settings". That fixed the problem but then I couldn't wake my computer with Logmein and I think Orb is disabled.
Noticed when I went back that there's another tab "Power Control" for network adapter. I disabled "allow this device to wake the computer" and changed the Advanced tab "Wake on setting" to "OS controlled".
Now when I put it to sleep it seems to stay down. I'll update tomorrow if it misbehaves tonight.

Answer:Sleep Wake Sleep Wake

If you think it might be the network card, you can always open a cmd prompt and run powercfg -lastwake to see which device was logged as waking the machine last.

It may be that one or more devices in your system is/are not compatible with sleep mode, hence those options are greyed out.

Hi manusdn7 and welcome

The windows memory test does not stress your memory enough to tell, plus it is run from within windows.

You need to run memtestx86

Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember that memtest errors can be either memory or bad motherboard slots so you may have to test memory one stick at a time, and the slots with known good memory.

I have a 4 yr old custom built desktop upgraded from Win 7 pro to Win 10 pro about 8 months ago. Up until two weeks ago the sleep/wake up has worked perfect. Now the unit will not wake from sleep. I have tried everything I have seen and nothing has worked. It has to be booted from sleep. I have now set sleep time to never and will shut the unit down at night rather than letting it go to sleep. Anybody have anything new that I could try. Is MS working on this???

Answer:will not wake from sleep

Win 10 pro installed on a Desktop computer. Like so many I have experienced the problem with the Sleep option not allowing the computer to Wake. Nothing I have tried has done anything to change this, so I decided to not use the Sleep and to just Shut Down when I am not using the computer. It seems that the Shut Down option does the same thing as Sleep. They both put the computer in a state where it will not Wake up. The only options are to hold the Power button until the computer completely shuts down, or to hit the reset button. Now when I do a normal Shut Down I am then holding the Power Button to completely Shut Down the computer. This is totally ridiculous. Is anyone working on a solution to these problems? I also have a Laptop with Win 10 installed that is doing the same thing with Sleep and Shut Down.

Hi guys, srry haven't been to tech support guy for awhile, in case if i miss any information, feel free to remind me
and i'll post it asap.

My laptop is about 2 years old (Acer Aspire 6920), one day like any normal day i was away from my laptop
and it went to sleep. The next time i was using it i tried to wake it up, it froze for around 10 mins, so i tried to
restart it and the next thing i knew it only starts up to "startup repair". Any attempts to access safe mode to
debug the computer has failed and since then the laptop has gone on a loop -->fail to repair in startup repair
--> restart computer again --> running startup repair. So i decided to reinstall the OS.

after reformatting and reinstalling windows 7 to my laptop though, i seem to encounter a similar error. The laptop
seems to work fine although whenever it goes to sleep and i try to wake it up, the screen froze and starts
flashing and the laptop wont work until you restart the computer again. I made my second attempt to reinstall
a new OS to the system and the same error occurred. My laptop has the latest bios and i tried various versions
of drivers for my graphics card (intel 965 chipset) and the problem continues to persist.

I was wondering if there's any program to debug this error or whether this is a hardware error that i can somehow detect.

Question: Wake from sleep

My Vista PC keeps going into sleep mode, or closes down. When I start it up again, it gets to a black screen saying continue restore, or re-start. Sometimes I get a blue screen with some sort of loading message on it, but on re-booting, it's ok. I 'googled' the sleep mode problem, and on one link it said it is commonly and registry error, and I needed to download a program to fix it. Can anyone help with the solution. Thanks.

I know this is a pretty typical issue with Vista users, but how do I fix it with a laptop?

When I try to wake it up (by pressing the power button), it will try to wake for about 10 seconds, then turn off, then turn on back again. This process goes on in a loop until it gives up.

I have an Abit AN8 with a dual core AMD 64 4200 and no matter how I set the on board NIC it keeps booting the PC. I have to physically disconnect the ethernet cable for it to stay off. It's the latest BIOS. wake on lan is disabled there and in the network controller advanced settings. It's an Nforce NIC and I have the latest Nforce drivers installed. It's hooked to a Linksys WRT54GS running the latest sveasoft router software. Has anyone seen this happen with socket 939 boards or nforce4 chipsets? Thanks

I use my laptop as a desktop actually. It stays plugged in at my desk, and I keep it turned on during the day and just turn it off at night when I go to bed.
Lately, occasionally, it just goes to sleep and won't wake up. Mostly I come back to a black screen and just hit one button and it wakes up quickly. But once in a while I get this thing where it won't respond and I have to hit the reset button to turn it off and back on.
What is the easiest solution, given that it's used mostly as a desktop? Turn off the power saving features? Or what?
Thank you.

Answer:HP laptop goes to sleep, won't wake up

it could be the indexing service running in the back ground. Change the power saving feature to High performance and disable the Windows indexing service

I have a aceraspire runniing W7homepremium and ran into the following problem which does not seem to be a W7 problem since I cannot find an earlier recovery state that would work again:

If I set pc to go to sleep, when waking up display will not but pc will (to what state is not known). This will happen with internal video port as well as external video pci-card. The display will only wake up after repeatingly powering down and repowering pc. I've turned off pc-sleep mode and all works fine with display going to sleep and also if computer is shut down normally.

I've been told this is possibly a bios issue? Anyone have ideas?

So with Windows 7, this is the first time I'm actually using sleep mode. I really like it. I come up to my computer, and it seems like its almost totally off, and clicking the mouse wakes it up within seconds. Its great!

So is there any way to set it up so that certain processes will wake the PC up, run, and then go back to sleep? For example, the scheduled Virus Scans of MSE? Or Windows Updates? That kind of thing. Ideally I'd like the PC to realize its 3am, time for a virus scan, wake up, run, and then go back to sleep after the virus scan is done.

Also, I was watching a movie on my PC and it went into power-save monitor mode. I looked for a setting for that, but could only find where it says 'Don't go to sleep if SHARING a movie', nothing about when watching one.

Final question. This ones pretty obvious and noobish, but I want to make sure. Is there any difference between my computer falling asleep on its own after 30 minutes, and my hitting the 'sleep' key on my keyboard?

Answer:Win 7 -- Wake up from Sleep for processes?

The computer will wake up if you choose "wake the computer to run this task" under the Conditions tab of the task in the task scheduler.

To stop the screen from turning off while watching something, you need to select that from the player itself I think. What do you use? I don't use Windows Media Player but try to untick "allow screen saver during playback" under the Player tab in the options and see if it stops that too.

There are different states of sleep, but I think it's the same whether the PC enters it automatically or you do it manually.

Relatively minor issue, but annoying. I have my computer set to shut off my monitors (2xDell U2412M) after 20 minutes of inactivity. Which it does, except that then they immediately turn back on and only on the second 20 minute interval do they actually stay off.

Both are connected by DVI to a Radeon R9 270 video card. The same monitors and cables I was using on a previous system with a GeForce 550 Ti without this issue.

I've tried updating the Catalyst drivers, scouring the Catalyst and Windows settings looking for anything that might explain this. Initially the "Alternate DVI operation mode" was checked in the Catalyst drivers, so I undid that for both displays, no change. Not using GPU image scaling, monitors are at their native resolution, I'm dubious that it's some kind of program activity since they shut off and stay off the second time around and I haven't been using my computer in all that time. This is on an 8.1 system with all the latest patches as of today. Everything looks perfect, no graphical distortions or artifacts, and 1920x1200 is easily within the reach of DVI. So I've got nothing when it comes to explaining why this is happening, but maybe someone else out there does.

Answer:Monitor Wake After Sleep

Did you check in the monitor's menu if it has some of it's own power saving features. ? I had similar problems with one of my monitors, turning it off helped.

Hi, I recently purchased a used t410s and did a clean reinstall for windows 7. I've put on most necessary drivers and I keep having some issues with sleep mode. When I put it to sleep via hotkey or closing the lid, most of the time it won't wake up. It blinks the hdd, power button and even tries to start/check the empty dvd-rom, fails after 1/2sec and nothing, it tries again after several seconds, keeps failing. This loop ends when I force shut it down with the power button and restart. all-in-all, it looks exactly like this:'ve read other boards about that laptop, but found no solution. I tried another clean install with only necessary drivers but nothing. Currently, I have 0 programs installed and using my other laptop for information or solutions.  t410s is I520m; 4GB ram, 128GB Toshiba SSD, intel HD video.

Hi all, Facts :Last august 30th, I ordered a Lenovo Yoga 3 14 (i5 / 8 / 256) from Amazon. It's been delivered one week ago (02/09/15).Two days ago (monday), I installed Kaspersky antivirus, downloaded the files for Windows 10, closed the screen and it went to sleep...And never woke up again ! I tried any and every keys / switches combo I thought of (power switch w/o volume switchs + and -, Novo switch, function keys, Ctrl/alt/ del, ctrl/shift/esc, escape, spacebar, enter... Right now, the power led is still on, the PC runs on battery and I'm waiting for it to run out of charge.I can hear and feel a very tiny ventilation from the back. The USB ports are active since my phone and an external HDD are plugged in them. The keyboard doesn't respond or enlight itself anymore. Despite all my tryings, I get no sound from the speakers... So I hope I will be able to reboot it and find a suitable solution (BIOS, driver update ?).The Yoga is new (one week old) and I'm yet already struggling to bring it back to life !!!!! Question :Is there any way to manually shut down the computer (the power switch for 60 sec doesn't work, the battery can't be taken out, no reset pin hole...) ? LENOVO, please HELP !!!!!I was so happy of this computer, don't let yous customer down. PS : As soon as the battery turns off, I'll try to save the PC and let you know how it goes.Sadly, I'm already considering to turn it back.

Dell XPS 435 MT, running Vista 64 bit Home Premium, Radeon HD 3650 graphics card and a Dell monitor.

Over the last month or so, my monitor will not wake up after I manually put the computer to sleep. The CPU light, fan etc. comes on as well as the keyboard lights but the monitor will not come on.

I have to hold the power button in for seven seconds or so and the computer will go back into some sort of a sleep mode. Pressing the power button again, the computer will beep twice then pause and then it repeats the beep sequence. I hold in the power button to again turn it off. A single press of the power button brings the computer back to life and after a while "Resuming Window" shows up on the screen. Even when I shut the computer down, I sometimes have to hold in the power button for several seconds before the computer will boot.

I have tried several things to remedy the situation: System Restore, updating the video card driver, re-seating the video card on the mother board, restoring the Display Devices control panel (it has gone away a couple of times). I also ran the diagnostics on the Dell site and everything came up as working correctly.

I am not sure if I have a hardware or software problem. I was just about to reload the operating system today but knowing how long it would take to re-install software and files, I decided to search the forums a bit more. I have seen several posts on forums regarding this condition but have not found an answer yet. I hope one... Read more

This problem was present from the beginning: After leaving the computer for awhile (hours), it won't wake up; the computer is running; light indicators are lit; on/off button lit; but does not respond to typing, using mouse, and the on/off button is not responsive, even if pushed continuously.  Only unplugging and plugging back in of the power cord shuts down the computer and then it has to be re-booted.  Obviously, this is getting old very quickly!  Is there a solution??  Thank you.

I have done a Google search on this problem and have checked and re-checked all of my computer's sleep settings. All are set so as to enable mouse or keyboard wake up from sleep. I have checked my bios for any settings that would inhibit wake up from sleep.

Not only will my computer not wake up from sleep, but when I restart it after sleep (I must do a power off restart) it will not start properly. It prompts to resume Windows and then locks up. I can get out of this loop only by turning power off again. Other than this problem the computer works properly.

The other day when I woke my laptop from sleep, the front indicator light turned on, I could hear the processor fan, but the screen was black (there is no dedicated on/off button for the screen). One hard shutdown later, I get the obligatory "Windows shut down unexpectedly" window after logging in, with the details saying it was a BSOD.

The last time this happened was a few months ago when I had old chipset drivers. I've had the updated ones for about 3 months with no issues.

Hello, My X230 wake up alone after put into sleep! This is a big issue when you store it into a case, since it will heat a lot due to the lack of ventilation. I initially thought this could be related to transportation (wag and jumping), but I've seen it happen even in a complete stationary position. Any ideias on the roote cause and how to solve it, please? Thks

Answer:X230 - Wake up alone from Sleep

Hi, bsantos9
This could be due to Windows Update or some other application having a setting that tells the machine to come back on. I found this article on Microsoft's website that goes into more detail on how to check for this and how to disable it, if this is the case.
Hope it helps,

hi, ive had my pc 3 years now and up untill xmas all was sweet as a nut but then it started to refuse to wake from sleep around 50% of the time..

i use sleep mainly so i can start it from my iphone and play itunes without having to go upstairs and wait for it to boot and as i say up untill xmas all was well

ive done virus checks, spybot and malwarebytes but nothing solves it

i did take the case panel off and noticed the graphic card didnt seem to be working (fan was stationary) and 2 red lights were on

normal boot from cold is fine (if a little slow)

any help would be greatly appreciated

ps, this booting from sleep is getting worse all the time and i would guess its around 75% failure right now

if this helps if i put it to sleep and try and awaken straight away its 100% failure, and if i leave it for 24 hours its the same, try and boot after a few hours has a better chance of booting

Hi Everyone,

I'm hoping you guys can help me, seeing as your the number 1 Google search and all on Win 7 threads!

I've been happily working away with Vista x64 Home Premium no problems and my Hauppage HVR2200 worked awsomely and SOOO reliably. My power was less reliable than my recordings!

However, now having Dual-booted our lovely friend Win 7 x64 first Beta and now RC 1(7100), I'm having some issues similar to those I used to have on my old computer running Vista x86 Home Premium:

1) Won't come out of sleep by the mouse or keyboard. I'm running them through a Hub but even before they were through the hub it didn't work. I haven't got any software installed for either and am going to give it a go, but it's never worked before. I've also started running MST, which I had to use on my old computer to get Vista to come out of sleep for recordings. Hasn't seemed to have worked yet.

2) And more distressingly, IF it wakes up for a Media Centre recording, or update or whatever, 9/10 times it blue screens or locks up when it does, or after its finished and trying to go back to sleep. I have several .dmp files and plenty of events, but all I've been able to narrow it down to are: I have an external hard drive that I run Roboform password manager and my email off, so its constantly being read- apparently USB devices like that can cause some trouble. OR It's a driver issue, quite possibly either the Intel RAID driver (RAID 0) I'm using or my LAN driver (Realtek RTL8168D).

Answer:Win 7 Sleep and Wake Issues

Your description of the problem implies an ACPI advanced function compatibility issue. There are two parts to this problem, the BIOS and the chipset driver. It appears you have the most recent BIOS for your motherboard. Make sure you also have the most recent chipset driver for your motherboard.

Your motherboard supports HPET (high precision event timing), which is likely the cause of your HAL errors, particularly if disabled (since your motherboard will report that it is HPET capable and Vista and 7 like to use it if possible). Also, if you are running the OS as 64-bit, make sure the HPET mode is set to 64-bit. Lastly, I would disable PME to be on the safe side. For debugging purposes, ensure the suspend type is S1.

Hello, Sorry if it's been already covered, but I ran into a weird problem with W520. The issue is that it will not wake up from sleep. Basically, I close the lid, the system enters into the sleep mode. After I open up the lid, the system tries to turn on (I see HDD light up), but the screen stays black and the system just shuts down, then it all happens over again. I am forced to remove the battery to boot it properly. No BSOD or anything, just the system can't wake up. This may be somehow connected to the docking station, as it most frequently happens when I close the lid in the docking station, but open the lid when undocked. Also happens when laptop enters sleep disconnected, but I dock it and then open the lid. I tried BIOS upgrade, but no luck. Anyone seen this before? Thanks so much.

Answer:W520 will not wake from sleep

Wabisabi:I've experienced this same problem in the past with other computers - put it to sleep (or hibernate it) in the dock, then wake it up not connected to the dock (or vice-versa) and the computer gets all confused and doesn't come back to life normally.I'm going to guess that there are just too many variables involved for the OS to cope with (the sudden addition or disconnection of all the different devices that are connected to the dock). So, what I learned to do long ago is to just shut the darn thing off whenever I remove it from the dock, or plan to put it back in the dock next time I want to use it. This is, I think, the easiest and most pragmatic 'fix'.My current computer (a W520) is a pretty trouble-free machine, but occasionally I will put it to sleep or hibernate it when I am away from the dock, then stick it into the dock and press the power button to start it up (forgetting that I had put it to sleep or hibernated it at last use, rather than turning it off). About half the time the computer gets all pissed off and confused and does not boot properly, the other half of the time, it boots normally. So, what you are seeing is not uncommon. But, honestly, I don't think there is enough time left in either of our lifetimes to track down and identify all the possible hardware permutations that could be causing this problem, and then resolve them.Michael

I have this weird issue occasionally. But it is getting more frequent recently. I usually close the lid to enter sleep mode instead of going to Start Bar and selecting it. (I assume these two ways work same) But if I open the lid and hit Enter Key, the machine won't wake up. However, it will keep turn itself on and off again and again. It's like you press the switch button, then you hear the processor runs and the key board light flashes. Then, it goes power off. The whole thing lasts about 2 seconds. Then it will repeat again and again until I hold switch button for few seconds, then it goes to power off. Then I re-truen it on, it will take me to START WINDOWS NORMALLY Screen. Does any body have sameissue? I saw the same issue got posted on another computer forum. Thanks.

Answer:Can't wake up from sleep mode.

Yes this happens to me if the GPU is set to Discrete in BIOS. Check to see if wake-up workswhen the BIOS is set to Optimus. Also I am using a SSD, 256GB M4. I simply disabled sleep and live with the problem.

Hi Guys,
would like some help/advice please. I have installed Win7 clean install on my computer, my problems is that if I leave mu computer for say 30+ minutes windows goes to sleep/hibernates and I find it hard to wake up normally have to reboot.

I have been through all the power management settings, and selected Never to all the selections in the advanced section, also in my power plan. I have even formatted my Drive and reinstalled win7 but still have the same problem.

When it is asleep, I have a halfmoon key on my keyboard, I have tried pressing this to wake it up but to no avail, also pressed the main power button, but this normally shuts it down.

Is there anything I can do to stop this happening, run a small program to keep it awake, or alter something in commands to stop it.

Your help and advice is really appreciated
Thanks and Regards

Hello, I am using an X240 with the following specs: Processor:  i5-4300 CPU @ 1.90 GHz 2.50 GHzRAM: 8.0 GBSystem: 64 bit, Windows 7No external monitors When my computer lid is closed and it automatically sleeps it is not possible to wake it again when I open the lid. I will move the mouse (both the external and the built in), touch the keys, and even push the power button and it will not wake up. The power button light remains solid. The only way I have figured out how to wake it up is if I plug in a VGA cable that is connected to an external monitor or projector.Does anyone know how to fix this?

Answer:X240 will not wake from sleep

First step is to look in the event log to se if a device is throwing a message about a problem entering the sleep state.

Hi friends, I recently decided to reformat my computer on which I had vista (I've done this several times before without any incidents). During the formatting, the monitor went black and showed a small window with the message "monitor goes to sleep"; neither the mouse nor the keyboard could wake it up but the computer was running normally. I waited a few hours( to allow the vista to be reinstalled from the recovery partition) and then I turned the computer off from the button. When I turned it on the first thing I saw was a line on a black screen which said that there was an error in formatting the hard disk... and nothing else. Since I could not start the formatting process again, I used an old cd with XP and tried to install xp (I assumed that formatting from a cd would erase my partition C and the recovery partition D). And here is my problem: after 10-15 minutes, during the instalation of xp, the monitor went to a deep sleep again. I left the pc running for an hour or more to let xp to install and then I turned it off. When I turned it on xp was booted but it saw only 131 gb of my 500 gb, having only one partition. After 10-15 minutes of being awake the monitor went to sleep again. I tried to change the settings for the monitor but there is no sleep option, nor hybernation, only turn off monitor and turn off pc. Somebody told me that I may have rootkits and formatting does not erase the master boot record and I should use kill disk. I did, but with the monit... Read more

We have a Dell Inspiron 11-3147 laptop running Windows 10.  For the last few weeks, it does not restart after going to sleep. We managed to get it going a few times by restarting in Safe Mode.
We called Dell support, and the technician suggested we install the A11 BIOS, since we were on the A10 version.  We did, and the problem persisted, Restart with Safe Mode did not help anymore.   We are able to start it only by doing a System Restore to the oldest Windows 10 restore point available. What is different when the laptop restarts after a system restore rather than from a normal start-up or a restart after going to sleep?
When the laptop is up, it runs without problems, which eliminates both hardware and Windows software as the cause of the problem. Which seems to point to the BIOS. The issue has been reported widely in Dell user forums since version A08, and it looks like we too are victims of Dell being unable to fix it.
We understand our laptop is out of warranty, but it is only two years old, and only Dell software is preventing it from working properly. We believe that Dell owes us a better solution than regressing to the A07 BIOS.
Are there any solutions that don't involve a hard reset or a complete windows re-install?  This laptop is now useless.  Why doesn't Dell acknowledge the problem?

Answer:Inspiron 11 won't wake up from sleep

This might not apply, but remember that Hibernation requires a brief press of the power button to wake the computer. If a key press doesn't wake the computer, try the power button. You can turn off Hibernation and Hybrid Sleep in Power Options, Additional Settings.

So this is my current problem: ever since I upgraded to an SSD and did a clean install of windows 10, I can't wake up my computer from sleep. On my old hard drive I did not have this problem. Whenever the screen times out, my mouse and keyboard are unresponsive and nothing I do will wake up the screen. My only option is to use the computer's power button to turn it off and then on. The computer on/off indicator is solid meaning the actual computer isn't in sleep, just my two monitors are black. In addition, when I manually put the computer into sleep it doesn't actually sleep the computer; once again, only my monitors go black and mouse/keyboard don't work. I've looked around for fixes to this problem, but so far I haven't found anything that works.

EDIT: The cause of the problem might be that I installed windows using a usb and booting from it initially as an efi device. My system has an efi partition, and when I installed windows on my brother's computer which is identical to mine using the usb normally, his computer can sleep/shut down normally. Any fixes for this?

I just upgraded the APU and motherboard of my HTPC and i had to format. I used to be able to wake it using 2 keyboards but now it isn't working anymore.
In the device manager, the option "allow this device to wake computer from sleep" is enabled

In power management, USB selective suspend is turned off.
My motherboard is MSI a75m-e45.

In BIOS advanced settings, in the "wake up event setup" options, there is an option called "wake up event by:"
It is currently set to "OS"

The second option is "BIOS" which unlocks the following options:
"wake up from S3 with USB device"
"wake up from S3/S4/S5 by PS/2 keyboard"

Wether i enable or disable these options, the computer still won't wake from sleep using any USB devices...

It is also impossible to wake the computer sending a magic packet with the correct MAC address. I used to be able to do that before the recent hardware change.

I use Windows 8.1, installed on a SSD
All drivers latest version

Answer:can't wake from sleep using keyboard or WOL

Also did you check the USB root hub in device manager right click it select power management Tab and uncheck this " Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power ". I found sometimes in Power management settings doesn't always work.
