Taskbar thumbnails turn off after 1 second

Question: Taskbar thumbnails turn off after 1 second

I keep several programs active most of the time. This is indicated by a bar under the icon. Mousing the icon of the currently open program window shows a thumbnail view of the current window(s), which stays visible until moving away. However, mousing the other icons shows a very brief thumbnail -- not enough to tell what's happening. When no windows are active all active icons show and retain thumbnails. Is this by design or is it changeable?

Preferred Solution: Taskbar thumbnails turn off after 1 second

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm not talking about thumbnail previews since I've got Aero turned off. I'm talking about the annoying little box that pops up when I hover over an application in the taskbar. It's just a litte box with the icon and title of the window and since I don't group applications on my taskbar, it's unnecessary and annoying. Any ideas on how to turn these off?

I just installed the Windows 7 full version Home Premium on my Dell XPS M1530 32bit, which previously had Vista.

I noticed in the little booklet that came with software that when you hold your mouse over an icon in the taskbar (internet explorer, for example), it should bring up little thumbnail pictures of what you have open. However, when I do that, I just get a list. I would much rather have the pictures, because I think that would be quicker for me to remember which page was which. I've putzed around trying to figure out how to change that, but can't find it.

Any suggestions?

Usually the taskbar thumbnails appear just a second after I hover the mouse on it. But now it stuck somehow. The thumbnails do not appear after I hover on it, nothing happens. To make it appears, I have to switch to one or two more windows and then hover back one the taskbar.
I really don't think that it happen to just a specific program...

hi i'm new here...and i don't know if this belongs here...

but basically my computer crashed, i brought it to a computer repair guy who reformatted my computer (windows 7 32bit home premium laptop). I did not have my windows 7 disc...but i had my key...so he used his home premium disc and my key

but now its working perfectly fine but the problem is that the taskbar doesn't show thumbnails when I hover over the icons anymore (it used to before my computer crashed and i know my computer's graphics are capable of doing so)

i'm too lazy to make screenshots...but if what i said didn't make sense I found a link with some pictures http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-taskbar-not-showing-thumbnail-previews/

but the link doesn't really tell me how to fix it...it says something about changing the registry...but do i really need to do that...? it sounds kind of scary lol

ahh so frustrating...im basically getting the "text descriptions" as seen in the link...and the computer repair guy is kind far away from where i live...any help...?

When you hover over a program icon in the Windows 7 taskbar, it pops up thumbnails for each of the windows of that program that you have running. I like this feature.

However, the order of these icons (L to R) is not constant - it seems to change according to which windows you've had open most recently. Is there any way to prevent this? I have tried right clicking and pinning them, however the order still rearranges.

Is there a way to prevent this?

This may be a stupid question, but is there any way to make the taskbar thumbnails appear faster? There's a 1-2 second delay which I find very annoying when I want to open a specific window of a program (and while I know I can click, I also find that very annoying... I guess I'm picky).

Indeed, you can simply click it But I know how you feel, since I tend to wait as well. I guess there must be some registry key to change this.

Windows 7 brings a new enhanced Taskbar a.k.a Superbar, the most interesting changes made in the GUI. When you hover your mouse on the program icon, it shows the thumbnail previews of the program. You can change the delay time that the mouse pointer has to stay hovered over an item before that item's thumbnail preview is displayed.
Here's how you can do this>>>
1. Click on the Start button, type regedit in the search box and hit enter.
2. Now you'll have Registry Editor open. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse
3. In the right pane, double-click on MouseHoverTime and type any value less than 400, say 20 in the Value data field (the values are in milliseconds). If u want them to appear ultrafast then type 0.
4. Now close Registry Editor and restart the computer to see the results.
Now hover your mouse on any taskbar icon and see if thumbnails are appearing faster than before.

Hi all

I have followed various guides on the internet to achieve this but it does not seem to work.

I have found I like my task bar to be big icons and always combine, no labels. I think this is pretty default. I used to use a 3 high non combine task bar in WinXP, but anyway.

But when have e.g. mulitple windows open, and I click the taskbar icon I want a Text list of my open windows, not the Thumbnails ..

If I open e.g. 11 windows, I get what I want. Please see pictures.

If you look at the thumbnail image you will see it is nearly impossible to tell actually which window is which, as they all look the same, and Windows helpfully cuts of the title of the window. :/

How ever if I open a couple more windows I get a nice text list that lets me choose exactly what I want.

How do I get a text list ALL THE TIME?
I have diabled Aero Peek in the taskbar property setting but I beleive this is just for Desktop only. I have rad that disabling it in Computer properties -- see attached screen shot should fix it, but I have done this, restarted and it's still showing me thumbnails.

How do I fix this ? Cheers all

Hello.

When taskbar is set to anything other then "always combine", it hides titles on preview thumbnails. So now in order to understand which thumbnail belong to what window, we have to shift our eyes from thumbnail to taskbar and search for slightly "highlighted" item, and prey that it's large enough to be able see what it says on it.

Is there a way remove this nonsense and always show titles on thumbnails?

Thank you.

Hi I've been struggling with these issues bout 20 days and this is whats going on.

When I press the windows key on my keyboard (corsair k70 vengance rgb) nothing happens but I also notice that at the same time the thumbnails of the programs I have currently opened disappear quickly and by the time I can click them the program doesn't come up, also alt+tab isnt working either . I've done like 8 clean installations and nothing seems to improve, aditinally normal video files flickers when this comes, it tends to vanish and everything works normally till it happens again. Right now I don't have enything but drivers installed. I'm using: Intel i7 4790, 2 8gb Kingston hyperx fury, nvidia gtx970, segate n wdc hard drives, corsair k70 rgb vengance, corsair m65 rgb.

I've also tried installing the os in different HD but nothing, even went back to w7 and I get the exact same problem.

Is there is a way to do this.
Before when I was on Windows XP,I was using a program called VisualTaskTips which had an option to display a preview of the window like here in Win7 and I had an option to choose how fast to see the preview once I point over the taskbar button(for the window).
The preview was set to be displayed instantly(it really was instantly)and when I move the mouse to another button in the taskbar,I had a preview of the next window instantly.

Currently on Win7 there is a delay before showing the window(I fix that with some guide from here...don't remember the link),delay before showing the next window when I move the mouse and kinda long delay before closing the preview window.

Hello, I am new to Vista 64, Enterprise. I have turned off the flip 3D, but I still will get the items that are in the task bar to suddenly decide that I have forgotten about them. They will stop me from what I was working on by jumping up on the desktop in thumbnails. I will click on the one I want and it will come back as before. Example: I fly MS Flight Simulator. I also have TrackerIR4 and Voice Buddy minimized in the task bar working in the background. I am flying and for no particular reason one of them will pop up and stop the game until I minimize it again. Please, how do I stop this. Not sure if this is a browser (latest Firefox) or Windows problem, so I'll describe the issue here.

All my program shortcuts are placed on the taskbar. The problem I'm about to describe and show, only occurs with the Firefox taskbar icon and its preview thumbnails. And will happen whether one or multiple tabs are on the tab bar. When hovering the cursor over FF's tab bar icon, and then hovering (and not clicking) the cursor over a tab's preview thumbnail, FF's window will now show several tiled FF's with the present thumbnails site on top. But, now clicking on that thumbnail, the site will open as a single site...with no evidence of the other apparently opened FF's. This only happens with the FF taskbar icon's thumbnail and not with any of the other icons on the bar.

After playing around with the operating system I found that I don't like the thumbnail (previews) from the taskbar. Is there a way to disable this in Windows 7?

I don't have the same screen as vista as listed here: Thumbnail Previews on Taskbar - Enable or Disable - Vista Forums

Just do it the same way as the tutorial, threw gpedit.msc. Enable it, click ok or apply and restart.
Or, if you don't want to restart..right click on the task bar and click on task manager, go to the process tab, select explorer.exe and end process. Then to restart it, click file on the task manager menu bar, new task-explorer.exe-OK. And it will work after that instead of restarting the computer.

Hello guys,

Sometimes somehow it does stay on, while I'm doing other things and my mouse isn't over it, so I'm wondering - maybe there is a way to make a live preview of thumbnails always on intentionally?

Answer:Live taskbar thumbnails preview when my mouse isn't over it

I have seen this behaviour sometimes when the system is working hard and CPU is at 100%. The preview pop-up stays on for quite a while after the mouse has moved on. I think it is normal and just reflects that there are many background tasks going on that delay the screen update process. I'm not aware of anyway to make them stay on.

I was given a new Windows 7 laptop at work today. Came with Hope Premium. Performed an Anytime Upgrade to Professional.

I've discovered that the taskbar is not working properly, and I don't know if it's a problem with the taskbar, or aero.

1. Can't move/rearrange shortcuts on the taskbar, even when the taskbar is NOT locked.

2. Left-click & Drag-up for Jump Lists does not work properly. The jump list appears, but as soon as I move the cursor off the shortcut, the jump list disappears. (Right-click on short cut does make jump list work)

3. When more than one instance of a program is running (ie. Windows Explorer), and I hover over the shortcut on the taskbar to see the open window thumbnails, Ican not move the cursor to select the window I want. Instead, like with jump lists, as soon as I move the cursor off the shortcut, the thumbnails disappear.

I have tried rebooting, and hard booting.

Has anyone else had a similar problem? Has anyone seen a solution?

Answer:Windows Taskbar jump lists, thumbnails not working

Ok, so I am brand new to Windows 7 and have been enjoying a lot of the new features. The only frustrating thing so far was the inability to manually rearrange icons in folders, but that's another story...

I just installed the recommended Windows updates last night, and now the Thumbnail Previews for open windows on the taskbar are disabled. I've restarted, etc, with no luck, and tried to find help online, but I can't seem to find a solution for Home Premium that doesn't involve editting the Registry...

Hopefully this is a simple fix, and I am just not typing in the right search words. These forums were fantastic when I got a nasty little virus on XP last time, so I am turning here again for help.

I know this has been discussed in the past (tweak programs, regedits, gpedit.msc, control panel settings, etc.) but a lot of the info may be dated and some was version and build specific.

As of Feb 2016, what are people doing?

I have Windows 7 Professional (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601)

When you open a window, it creates a link on the taskbar--whether a browser window, folder, or program such as a Word document. I'd like to have the links appear as a list rather than thumbnails. I'd also like to have only 1 link button for Word, 1 for each Firefox open window, 1 for Explorer, etc., rather than a button for each document/instance/whatever. So when you hover over the Word icon, a list of open word documents would appear, and when you hover over firefox, a list of the open windows would appear, etc..

Is there a way to do this now?

Thanks

I just did a reinstall of XP Pro and am having trouble with video files being "in use" when trying to move/delete them (only a several second lag, but it is annoying me). It has to do with a preview being generated in the details pane in the bottom left corner of Explorer. I eventually figured out how to turn off the preview option on my last install but have forgotten how I did it. Under folder options I have "do not cache thumbnails" unchecked. Is this the setting I need to change? Or is it somewhere else? It seems to me I need an option to not show a preview in the details pane.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Answer:How to Turn of Thumbnails in Details Pane?

I haven't done an XP install, but I have had problems like yours. Here is how I fix them without reinstalling, in case it may help? (The instructions may be different for XP.)

Thumbnails are used as icons when the folder is in Thumbnail view. This is usually not the problem, since they are usually cached after the first time. I turn them off by getting the Properties window for that folder. (I just go to the parent folder and right-click on the folder there, then choose Properties.) Then in one of the tabs, I find the Enable thumbnail view option and uncheck it. But, again, this is probably not the problem.

The preview thumbnail (actually, the whole details pane) can be turned off by unchecking View as Web Page in the View menu in one folder. Or, you can turn it off for all folders by going to View menu > Folder Options > General tab > choose Custom, then click the Settings button and in the View Web Content in Folders section, choose Only for folders where I select "as Web Page" [View menu]

If I want the details pane, but not the preview, I edit the HTML of the window. I don't know if you want to try this, it can be confusing, but here's what I do, just in case:
I right-click on the detail pane (or you can use the View menu), and click Customize this Folder... then choose create or edit HTML document. This allows me to customize that details pane. To remove only the worst case files from the preview, I see if I can find "var w... Read more

it wasn't my first time I've encountered this, It happened same thing on every updates. So knew I'd need to rebuild icon and thumbnail cache once again so I following this steps...

Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 10 Customization Tutorials
Clear and Reset Thumbnail Cache in Windows 10 Customization Tutorials
After Creators Update 2 thumbnails cache keeps auto-deleting Solved - Windows 10 Forums

After few restart, it did not solve my issues issues, It did not rebuild cache but went for worst. Now I got I got a blank icon/thumbnails on taskbar (left of screen) and it seem to happen only on windows store app (i.e. calendar, mail, photo previewer and etc..) not the third party programs.

I also have issues with images (almost most image format) showing paper white thumbnails, instead of previewer or default icon.
I cannot fathom how this happen. I've spend hours goggling for solution, done many different methods on rebuilding icon and reboot pc 50+ times. Went through recovery and rollback version. sfc /scannow DISM. virus screening, disk cleaning and etc none of it detect my issues and its driving me nuts.
Instead of having to reset windows and reinstall many of 3rd parties program again I was hoping there are solution. Would anyone by any chance know what the issues are? Thanks in advance.

My laptop all of a sudden had a problem where when i logged in the icons on the desktop and taskbar are blank/missing. Also when going into file explorer all the files thumbnails are also blank. The names are still there but the thumbnails and icons are missing. Ive tried to resolve through google where they say to refresh the "iconcache" by deleteing "iconcache.db" file but the file is also missing after searching for it. Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Hi all,I have been noticing this for a while now, in all the builds we got our hands on.†Though I am taking about Powerpoint 2007 here, the same symptoms apply for Excel 2007 too.†Here goes...
I open one presentation in powerpoint (Powerpoint 2007 SP1). The file is a .ppt (a la pre 2007 ppt).Thumbnails work, and aero peek works - all is fine.I open another PPT, and lo behold - thumbnails do not show the content of both the presentations now, and aero peek does not work!I close one of the presentations - no go, still no content in thumbnail and no aero peek!Anyone else faced this - I encourage all to try this and post their experience. I have posted a screenshot here, for a better understanding...

I accidentally cleaned up my complete temporary files and after that and lists are displayed instead of that. Can you throw some light on this and btw my OS is WIN 7 Home Basic 64 Bit which does not support Aero Features, so that Aero thing doesn't work with my OS. Apart from system restore, how can I restore defaults. Can you single out the file/s which are needed to restore my taskbar thumbnails.

Answer:Taskbar thumbnails of open documents and programs stopped working.

I'm confused...If you don't have Aero then you do not have thumbnails in the taskbar...

I'm not aware of any way to do this...
Your taskbar would start taking up too much space with just a few programs open.

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Disabling video thumbnails whilst keeping image thumbnails enabled?

Does anybody have any ideas on this please?

Hi,

I have unchecked the option to 'show icons instead of thumbnails' (view>options>folder options) and I have checked 'show icons' (performance>advanced) but still I get icons instead of thumbnails. I have closed and restarted file explorer multiple times to no change. I have posted the screenshot below to show the current settings. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Answer:Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

When you right click on the folder itself and select properties, there is a tab called customise. In this tab you can select what type of folder you want and choose Pictures. You can have this cascade down to subfolders as well. As for the other settings you mentioned, I usually keep my folder settings as the defaults.

I admit, I love Vista and since drivers have become stable, Iíve not had any big issues, but there is one thing that Iíve been trying to figure out for a while now with no success and its really bugging me.

Live preview thumbnails seem to go ďblankĒ after a while. If an app has been running for a while, the live preview gets replaced by a static icon. Seems to be some sort of resource management issue, but Iíve been trying to figure out if there is some sort of configuration that can be adjusted to increase some sort of resource limit or turn it off altogether.

Answer:Vista Live Thumbnails become Dead Thumbnails

i've formatted, but last i checked, i had realtime previews of windows, only if the window was open

if i minimized the window, i would only get static images. Are you having the same problem, that might be the way it's supposed to work, i' m not sure

I am posting this problem now, although after searching the forums there are some things I should try when I get back to the problem computer, such as starting in Safe Mode or reinstalling my video driver. I'm not sure I have seen this exact problem though.

It is a Compaz 700 series laptop running WinXP Home with 256mb RAM. All WinXP updates are installed. I'm running eTrust antivirus and on an encrypted wireless network behind a router, run AdAware frequently and delete everything it finds.

I've had the computer for over two years and this problem has starting occurring within the past couple of months. It used to happen only occasionally and seemingly randomly, but now it happens every time I start up, usually within a couple minutes, and with no applications running according to Task Manager.

There will be a loud click or pop sound effect, the desktop will flash black and white, and then various items will turn black - usually, the taskbar and various (some or all) icons on it, Start menu, and the menu bars of any windows that are open. The blacked-out menu items and taskbar icons still work - that is, if I double-click in the clock area of the taskbar I get the Date & Time control panel and if I click in the Close or Minimize area of an open window's menu bar, that will happen. Also, if I open new windows, those menu bars are not black, but sometimes they turn black eventually. However, there's no way to get rid of the black, short of rest... Read more

Hi Folks:
My apologies if this is a double post. Mod, please remove this if it is.
Until an hour ago I was able to start up my favorite video game, World of Tanks, full screen, with no caption taking room at the top and no task bar taking room at the bottom, and no frame. Just video game corner to corner.
If I want to get out of the video game temporarily, I hit and I have my desktop.
Now, probably after I hit a key or mouse button I shouldn't have, the video game has an annoying border, with caption and task bar distracting me and taking space for no purpose.
Captions for each window are handy when multiple applications occupy the screen, and the task bar, are good things, but there are times I don't need to see them.
How do I turn the captions and task bars and window frame off while running a particular application?
Thanks
Larry

Answer:How do I Turn Off Caption and Taskbar While Running A particular App?

Thanks MechKB:
That was an option for the game, as you said.
I thought it was a Windows thing, because I know I didn't go into the Menu-Settings-Graphics menu item to change that check box.
It's working as I want now.
Odd, because I don't see any reference to a keyboard shortcut to change the windowing.
I appreciate your assistance.

Hello Rockit,

The problem is that the registry setting for this is a binary value that includes other settings that will vary per user account, and can't have a universal on/off for everyone without affecting the other settings.

If you like, you could use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to help create a couple of .bat files or a script to toggle taskbar auto-hide on/off.

Hey all,

Another minor, non-life-threatening irritation:

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a PC, "5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600".

When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view, Windows seems to assign *random* pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders. Actually it's not totally random; when i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder, it works fine, but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder, elsewhere on the hard drive.

I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to:

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Choose Picture/Restore Default.

Often, that doesn't work: The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored, for example, but when i actually look at the folder again, it hasn't actually changed anything.

But then, that problem can be solved by going to

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Change Icon.

...and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder. That usually solves the problem.

This is mildly annoying, and if anyone knows a permanent fix, i'd appreciate it. But the main problem I wanted help for was for the "My Documents" folders.

The fix given above will not work for "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos", because the properties screens f... Read more

This references: Quick Launch Bar: icons don't wrap even though there is room - a post by chillz which discovers a "bug" with the taskbar not resetting the row-sizing for toolbars when dragging the taskbar to the left then back to the bottom.

I, for a while now, have been using a custom quick-launch toolbar on my taskbar with the taskbar being 2 unit-lines in height and having the taskbar on my secondary ( left ) monitor. When I first set this up it showed 3 lines of small icons in the toolbar and up to 2 lines on the standard taskbar. This was perfect because the toolbar didn't reset the order every time I launched an application contrary to how the pinned application system works. With pinned applications, no matter what position I drop the icon, the order always resets and floats from place to place so that system of organizing icons is disgusting because you have apps between icons of apps that aren't running some times and other times the running applications are above and below with or without grouping enabled.

The vertical display would be the ideal way for me to view unlaunched applications ( see aforementioned topic ) because they group together and launched apps come after; in horizontal mode the taskbar is chaotic without a toolbar organizing the apps to one side but then you lose the functionality of the pinned-application system ( if you forfeit usage of that chaotic horizontal system in favor of how the vertical system works but in horizontal mod... I have nicely pinned all my key stuff (Google Calendar, Gmail, google maps, etc. to the Win10 taskbar, but everything I open opens in Chrome.
If I click my iTunes taskbar-icon then iTunes opens and its taskbar-icon brightens and a little blue bar appears on its taskbar's bottom edge--iTunes opens FROM the iTunes icon.
If I click Google Calendar, G-mail, maps, etc., these icons remain black, and all this opened windows just stack up in Chrome very messily.
The intention was to have them open in Chrome but FROM their taskbar-icon, so they're nice and neat and separate and always right there conveniently.

Hey everyone, i've been having a lot of problems with windows 10. Recently i've had an issue with the taskbar, it started where when i left clicked on a program that i had pinned to it would not show up the menu like it usually does and just does nothing, and later on the start button wouldn't open up at all when i clicked it, now on my main screen (im using a dual screen setup) the left hand side of my taskbar is gone which had the internet access, speakers, notifications, language and date/time plus the show hidden icons and question mark. They are all on my second screen, but none are on my first (main) screen. I've tried using all of the different guides such as

and none of them worked, i followed every step, i did the powershell thing and everything else, i even tried make a new account and it was working for about 5-10 minutes and then it did the exact same thing its doing on my main account.

Can anyone please help ? I would really appreciate it

On both my Windows 10 home PC and work computer, 7+ Taskbar Tweaker causes duplicate buttons on the taskbar of Chrome that turn invisible:

As you can see in the image, there are two blank icons in front of the Chrome icon. Both of these are working and open Chrome when I click on them, except they're invisible. The only way I'm able to fix this is to restart explorer.exe whenever it happens. I've only ever had this happen with Chrome. Is this a bug with 7+ Taskbar Tweaker, or perhaps maybe caused by the settings I use? Are there any known workarounds?

Answer:7+ Taskbar Tweaker duplicate blank taskbar icons for Chrome

No problems with these settings (I've made no changes except I use this for scrolling volume control).

You have Grouping settings different... and have hidden the Peek button- and as you can see from my specs, mine is the Anniversary build.

Hey all, my girlfriend is running Win 7 Home... she has always had the default Windows speaker "volume" icon down on her task bar by her clock. She uses it all the time to switch between her speakers and her headset, where she right clicks on the icon and selects "playback devices" and then changes between her soundcard/speakers and her usb headset.

Anyway, it disappeared last night.

Now open Taskbar, click on the "customize" link, get the window to select which icons appear... on the speaker "volume" icon under behaviors, it is set to "show icon and notifications"...

HOWEVER.

Then at the bottom click the link for "turn system icons on or off" and on that window, the icon is greyed out and set to OFF and it can not be changed to ON.

She's been bugging the heck out of me ever since to fix it.

We have no idea what changed it, or how it got changed.... we just know its been there and she's used it, for the past two years, and now its suddenly not there.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Taskbar Speaker Icon Missing and Greyed out on Customize Taskbar...

Hello Nyarlathotep,

You might see if step 9 in Option Two in the tutorial below may be able to enable the Volume icon again.

System Icons - Enable or Disable

Hope this helps,

Hi all,

Past items in Taskbar.

There are many leftover items of software that I used to have before in this section. For one reason or another they're still showing up as past items, although I removed that software a long time ago in the Add/Remove Programs. Do these items interfere with the speed of starting up the computer? I like to have my 'puter as clean as possible.

I would like to remove them if possible but can't find a way to do it.

1. Can they be removed?
2. If so, HOW?

Windows XP Home.

Thank you!

Answer:Taskbar and Start Menu Properties (past items in Taskbar)

Hi oma

Yes you can remove these as they are not automatically removed when software is removed, no they dont hamper the startup process, but I personally like to remove them as I like things tidy, just need a simple button to do this proces automatically and one thing I have suggested to MSFT to add.

Open Regedit ( goto Start > Run and type regedit and hit enter )
Locate the registry key location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify and right click the folder and choose Export ( this will backup that location for you )

then Delete the two values mentioned in bold ( agian right click each of them and choose delete ) IconStreams and PastIconsStream once deleted hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and look for explorer.exe in the Processes Tab and click it and choose End Process ( at this point it is perfectly normal for your taskbar and all desktop icons to disapear )

Then with the Task Manager still open click the top menu option of New Task (Run...) and in the Open box type explorer and hit enter.

Then when you check the Customize Notifications they will all be gone ( apart from some running ones ) best bet is to restore all your actual running tray processes is to re-boot.

Note for Vista users only this is slightly different as below.

Open Regedit ( goto Start > and in Start Search box type regedit and hit enter )
Locate the registry key location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Micros... Read more

Hello all,
So about a month ago I restarted my computer and when it came back on all my programs pinned to my task bar and everything that was in my start menu was gone. From there I could not unlock the taskbar and nothing would pin in either the start menu or taskbar. I researched everywhere about it. I tried unlocking the taskbar in properties and registry with no luck. I finally found some posts about how my user profile was corrupt and from there I went on and made a new profile and copied everything and BOOM it all worked fine now. Well today it happened AGAIN! I restarted my computer and everything disappeared. So I think it is still a corrupt profile, but this is the second time it has happened. My question is. 1) is there another way to fix those two issues besides creating a new profile? and 2) What could be the cause of this happening twice in a month. Would a reformat fix it or is it a hardware issue?

ADD: I forgot to mention my outlook email profiles are gone too. Those somehow got erased as well.

Answer:Cannot unlock taskbar AND cannot pin anything on taskbar or start menu AND Outlook Pr

Did you run chkdsk on your drives to eliminate possibility of file corruption or cross-linking ?

Is there a method/hack or a 3rd-party program that allows the user to hide the taskbar by dragging its top border line downwards, after un-locking the taskbar? I remember I could do that under Win9x.

Answer:Drag top border line of taskbar downwards to hide taskbar

Well the autohide feature is still there I actually find it easier to deal with than manually moving it, which often results in accidentally pulling the taskbar to horizontal or something.

So i used IOBit Advanced System Care 5 to tweak some settings and apparently I messed something up lol I have reset them to default but it still does the same I have restarted several times, I haven't tried a system restore yet as that sometimes can cause problems beyond what it's worth, but I am willing to do it if it will help!

As you can see from the picture, when I have a single window open the button in the taskbar is stretched to fill the entire taskbar, if I open 2 they each take up 50% of the task bar and so on. I would like to return to normal sized buttons but I have no idea how to go about that!

Thanks in advanced if anyone can help, and PS I hope this isn't a repeat question I used the search function but the only threads I could seem to find were about stretching the taskbar across multiple monitors which is not what this is abut. so sorry for that if this is a common question

Answer:Buttons on Taskbar stretch to fill entire Taskbar

Welcome aboard, Charles Darwin Nice name

Advanced System Care 5 makes such a mess is reported earlier, too . First what I am to say you that windows 7 does not need any advanced system care at all . All these programs are not enough able to care windows 7 system. The inbuilt disk cleanup utility and CCleaner is enough for the OS.

Now let us discuss about the fix. If some registry backups are made by Advanced System Care 5 , restore those backups first.

If not fixed yet, follow SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker .

Another idea to fix it may be by applying the System Restore to an earlier date than occurrence of that mess.

If still not fixed, try Taskbar - Change Icon Button Width Size .

At the last point, you can always perform a Repair Install , when no other fixes are working.

Please post back with results

I want to see all task bar buttons and not have them grouped. XP Taskbar menu offers check "Group similar taskbar buttons." I leave this unchecked, then Apply, then OK. XP still groups the similar buttons (e.g., Word doc1, Word doc2, etc.) instead of having these ungrouped. Ideas? Suggestions?

Answer:XP Taskbar fails at NOT Group Similar Taskbar Buttons

Hi arthurk and welcome

Have you also 'locked' the taskbar option? Rightclick on the taskbar and see if there is a tick next to this item. If not, Rightclick again and choose Properties and see if there is a tick next to Taskbar and Group Similar Taskbar Buttons.

Is this possible? I want to make it so that when no windows are maximized (when the taskbar isn't covered with anything) auto hide disables itself and the taskbar is shown. Is this possible?

Answer:Disable taskbar Auto-Hide when taskbar isn't covered?

Just so I am clear:

Say you have Firefox open, you want the taskbar to hide itself. However, if you minimize firefox, you want the taskbar to stay visible.

Correct?

I've searched everywhere for the answer to this!! I can't believe this isn't bothering anone else?

I love the translucent look of windows, but when I have a window in full screen mode, I want the taskbar to be solid!! this was standard in vista! A translucent taskbar and frame makes it look like the window you're using isn't full screen, and I see I get drawn to it every time! hate it (the only thing I hate so far!).

Any ideas anybody? I know I can make it solid all the time, but thats not what I want either, I just want it to turn solid when a program is in full screen.

Please help me on this one!!

Answer:Vista-like Windows 7 Taskbar where taskbar turns solid!

Hi and welcome.

I agree with you and my wife wanted it back to a solid blue.
OK here is the steps
1. Right mouse on Desktop and select Personalize.
2. Select Windows Color at the bottom of the screen.
3. Uncheck the Enable Transparency.
4. Make sure you select the color you want. I still like dark blue and make sure you Color inensity is about 75%

Hopefully that does it for you.

I have a client that has laptop with windows 7 Pro. He had a faulty network card, so I have added a new, usb network card. That said, He can not pin anything to taskbar or start menu. I cleared both folders of shortcuts(567 of them) but to no avail. He also has no options under his desktop Context menu for New. He is also using a roaming profile, of which I will disable next time I am there. I have a feeling that might be the issue. I did scour the internet trying all the usual suggestions, but do vaguely remember something about an entry in cache somewhere that if it is too big or corrupt, it could cause this behavior. I am unable to find that post anywhere now. Any thoughts? I would appreciate it. I mention the network card because one post had taskbar issues until he disabled his faulty network card. I have disabled the faulty network card.

Answer:Cannot pin to taskbar, start menu or unlock taskbar

Theres also settings in the performance options that can affect the ability to pin things to the taskbar at least. Have you ran a sfc/scannow on this machine?

Welcome to the forums btw.

Hi, I am working on a laptop with Win 7 x64 Home Premium, SP1.

It was recently pretty badly infected, but has been thoroughly cleaned, and all additional bloatware uninstalled.

I am unable to unlock the taskbar, nor able to pin any shortcuts to it. There's also a strange folder that keeps appearing on the desktop, called %localappdata%, with a subfolder called 'elevatedDiagnostics'.

I enabled gpedit.msc. I have tried using the sevenforums supplied bat file to restore all Group Policies, to no avail. I searched inside of gpedit to the location that controls the locking of the taskbar, and it appears normal, as 'not configured', as are all the other entries under 'start menu and taskbar'.

I am trying to repair this without doing a full re-install of windows. I'd actually rather know *why* this is happening, and fix it manually.

thanks for any help!

Answer:Can't unlock Taskbar, Can't Pin to Taskbar, odd folder on desktop.

It often isn't enough to clean up a badly infected PC so I would strongly consider doing a Clean Reinstall Windows 7 especially if this is factory-installed Win7 which is the worst install of Win7 one can have anyway.

Otherwise run a full scan with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware followed by SFC /SCANNOW Command.

Users looking for ‘Alt+Tab’ alternative to switch between different Windows application try 7 Taskbar Numberer. It is a simple and useful application that makes it easier for you to switch to and launch applications on your taskbar.
Consider a case where many applications are kept open or where a user has significant amount of tray icons. It becomes a task to identify the sequence of desired application or tray icon.
7 Taskbar Numberer solves this problem by numbering sequentially, from left to right. Icons for the open and close-but-pinned Windows applications and then placing ‘HINTS’ tiny visible numbers as they are known, in the upper left corner of the application icons and upper right of the tray icons. What’s good?
The numbering scheme supports more than one digit, so the hint for the tenth application is ‘10’. The application is light on resources as it consumes only 2.6 MB of your computer memory space.Plus, it is free of unwanted toolbars and adware. If, at all, you are not satisfied with the performance of the program, you can right-click on the icon in the system tray to unload the application and remove numbers immediately.
7 Taskbar Numberer is compatible with both, 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 operating systems. Anyone interested in downloading it can download it from here.

Hi guys,

Yesterday I installed Windows 10 Pro and after sometime I noticed that when I right-click on the taskbar I don't have "Properties" option which normally should be.

Could you please help me to sort it out.

Thank you.

Answer:No taskbar properties in the context menu of the taskbar

You appear to be running the Anniversary Update (1607). A number of old 'control panel' style windows (such as the one for taskbar Properties) have now been move into the Settings app. Click 'Settings' and you'll be taken to the new location for all the taskbar properties settings.
