x64-based processor, but x86-based PC; can I upgrade to x64 bit?

Question: x64-based processor, but x86-based PC; can I upgrade to x64 bit?

Hi, I'm currently running a Windows 10 Pro PC with a 32-bit architecture. My processor allows for a x64 upgrade, but my system's information shows that my PC is x86 based. Can I still upgrade? I also have 6.00 gigabytes of ram, definitely enough for an upgrade.

Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: x64-based processor, but x86-based PC; can I upgrade to x64 bit?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: x64-based processor, but x86-based PC; can I upgrade to x64 bit?

No you cannot upgrade a 32-bit system to a 64-bit one. You can however, clean install a 64-bit system instead of the 32-bit one.

I have a 32 bit windows 10 and x86 based pc but x64 based processor, originally it was a windows 10 64 bit and x64 based pc but my hard drive broke and got bad sector,it got fixed my a computer fixer but he installed 32 bit instead of 64 bit,i have a windows 10 x64 installtion media but when i run it it says it cannot run on my pc,i really wanna go back to 64 bit because only 2.60gb of my ram is usable out of 4gb

Answer:Wndows 10 x86,x86 based PC but x64 based processor,can it go x64

It could be because of some driver or other HW but if processor is 64bit (and it is), 64bit OS should run on it without problems.

Create Icon on desktop to open a websiteYa, I?ve done that for ever and it works great. But today I was on a chat with Norton support he was on my pc remotely trying to fix a LAN Proxy problem. He uninstalled several problem malware programs and installed some other programs including Google Chrome. After he was off the system I was checking around my HP Laptop and noticed the the Desktop Icons with Apps on the PC worked but all the web based icons did not work anymore. I did the procedure like I had many times before from a web site but the Icon just will not work at all. The error I get on all of them is when I click on the icon to open itIs Application Not Found.I?ve never seen this one before but I?ll keep trying to find the solution unless one of you gentlemen have a answer for me, I do plan on uninstalling Google Chrome and testing the icons again to see if that might have something to do with it?Thanks.Rod [email protected]

It says my processor is x64 bit based , but I'm running x32 bit Windows 10. It's a dual core,so if I'm running x32 only a core will work,or what?

Answer:x64 based processor

All it means is that your processor is capable of handling 64-bit. On a 32 bit install both cores will work fine. Obviously, by running 32 bit Windows you are missing out on some of the inherent efficiencies of a 64-bit set up. In short don't worry.

when i go to computer info in windows 8 it is showing that i have 32-bit OS, x64-based Processor. i am slightly confused. does this mean i have a 32 bit OS installed but my computer is compatible with 64 bit?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Answer:32-bit OS, x64-based Processor

Your OS installed is x86 (32-bit) and your CPU is x64 (64-bit) compatible.
You can run both x86 and x64 OS with your CPU.
Hopefully that answers your question. :)

1) My motherboard is am2/am2+ and some of the processors on the compatibility list are am3.. will they work?

2) Do new amd processors come with thermal paste?

3) how do you apply thermal paste? would you say it makes a difference how you apply it?

Answer:Few processor based questions

1. "AM3 can be used on AM2+ socket" .... more info

So socket supports it but bios might not depending on the motherboard.

2. Every CPU I'v bought has come with thermal compound on the heat sink. Usually i buy arctic silver and apply that if I don't feel comfortable with the factory paste. You can always remove the factory paste and apply the third party paste if you notice temperature issues. You can use a program like core temp to monitor temps.

So I opened my system monitor just for the heck of it this morning and when I did so I noticed I had the cnql1213.dnl power-pc based THING running on my intel-based mac. I see it is something called a Vundogrb. My question is can I just delete this or is there more that I need to do to successfully rid myself of it. I used to use Windows, in fact I still do sometimes for my laptop, but most of the time I used my Mac and so long since I really worried about this stuff that I'm not sure exactly what to do with it?Can you tell me something about this creepy intruder and how I need to deal with it?Thanks.

As usual, when new, this laptop ran so well. I did add some necessary programs and have the usual slow down.
I have three questions,

Is it the processor that governs the over all speed? I had a 1.6GHz that was incredibly slow. The 2.6 was initially fast and made me happy.
Would it be cost effective to change out the processor? Can I change out the processor?
Is there a program that really will 'clean up' the *** that slows down a pc? I use Glary and/or Ccleaner. All they seem to do is eliminate my shortcuts and automatic signin locations.

Thanks to all who strive to assist those of us who are frustrated.
May you be blessed in ways you have not yet imagined.  Pat

Answer:Slowed down - Inspiron 5559 Laptop, i5-6200U CPU @ 2.30GHZ 2.40GHz, 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor

1.  Not by itself, no.  In fact, if the system has a conventional hard drive, that's the slowest component in the system.  If the system is running abnormally warm, that too will slow things down markedly.
2.  No.  The CPU is soldered to the mainboard, so a CPU upgrade means you must replace the mainboard - which makes it cost-ineffective.
3.  Again, it depends on the reason for the slowdown.  You may want to start with a thorough run of the Dell diagnostics (F12 at powerup).

Hi I have a few questions about upgrading my machine to a media centre PC.

I purchased my PC awhile ago back in 2004 and I'm interested in upgrading my PC to a Media centre based PC,but I'm unsure if I should buy a new mobo that is PCI Express based along with a media centre compatible PCIe video card and TV tuner card? this upgrade worth it considering PCIe seems to be taking over?,I'd also have to upgrade my Ram to DDR 2 to support the new board, should I just stick with an AGP video card along with a PCI tv tuner card until I later upgrade my mobo, ram, video card?.The TV tuner card I've decided on is a PCI card,so it will work later on the newer PCIe based board, which also has PCI slots..but what about an AGP video card?,I highly doubt it cuz wheres the AGP slot on the new Intel PCIe based board?.
The reason I ask is because my current mobo is older, its an Intel D865GBFL with no PCI Express slots, just 6 PCI slots, and the video card I have now is an AGP type, my Ram is 512mb I'm wondering if it is worth spending all the extra money on a new PCIe based board along with a PCIe video card and DDR 2 Ram,etc.. instead of just buying an AGP type of card that works on my current mobo..but then again for the future, newer boards don't support AGP, I noticed,so?(is it worth investing in AGP cards)

I wanted to purchase the ATI All in wonder 2006 Edition video card, which is media Centre compatible and AGP interfaced, which would wor... Read more

I've got one of those pre-made Gateway towers with XP on it and was wondering if the specs were decent enough to upgrade to Windows 7. Here they are:

- Intel Pentium D Processor 820 (2.8ghz, dual core)
- Intel Graphics Accelerator 850
- 250gb hdd
- 1 gig DDR2 RAM

The only thing that makes me question this is the RAM, as Win7 requires a minimum of 1gb RAM. Would the OS run smoothly? It's not going to be a workhorse of a computer or anything.

Thanks in advance.

This is not good news, especially for those people who purchased recently a new machine with the Intel Cedar Point chipset. From Some Intel-Based Tablets Flunk Windows 8 Upgrade - Hardware -:

Numerous models of Windows 7 tablets and netbooks, some less than a year old, that should be upgradeable to Windows 8 won't be able to handle Microsoft's new operating system due to problems with the Intel chips that power them, according to computer manufacturers and frustrated users.
The problems affect systems that use the current version of Intel's Atom line, known as Cedar Trail. Intel is rolling out a new version of Atom, called Clover Trail, that is specifically designed for Windows 8 hardware, but that's too late for many users who previously bought systems on the belief they could upgrade later.

Affected products use the Intel Cedar Trail N2800 processor and the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3650. It also appears that Intel's previous version of Atom, Pine Trail, which also uses GMA 3150 for graphics is affected.

Hello HP, I own an HP X2 10n-002nl which was delivered with 32-bit windows 8.1 and now upgraded to 10. I recently discoverd, to my disappointment, that it is imposssible to install 32-bit or 64-bit OS such as Linux without incurring into much trouble.(I've just tried but I **bleep***** up the process ending with a 501 bios error, then I have reinstalled a clean win10) It would be nice to have both 64 bit processor and hardware giving the user more flexibility in its OS choice. Anyway this tablet is so slow compared to Android tablet! I had Windows 10 build 10240 running on my older computer but the upgrade to build 10586 failed.

This is an older system - non-UEFI - with a MBR boot volume.

The boot volume has 4 partitions: Windows 10 Pro (NTFS), Data (NTFS), Linux (ext4) and Linux swap. There are none of the extra 'normal' special partitions like the small EFI and MSR one usually finds on more modern systems.

The system boots from grub to either windows or Linux.

This has worked on Windows 8 and the upgrade to Windows 10 build 10240.

But when I install the newest Windows build 10586, the new version of Windows 10 destroys the grub loader and I get an MBR load error.

The volumes seem to be OK, but the boot info gets trashed.

I've restored back to Windows 10240 and tried on a different hard disk and I got the same results.

I tried restoring the MBR and also tried using 'bootrec /fixmbr' but nothing seems to work.

I am restoring a third time back to Windows 10 build 10240 and I will try something else.

Perhap I should try to remove grub before the next upgrade attempt.

Has anyone else encountered this issue and have any ideas?

Doing WIndows Upgrades normally do not cause loss of data or programs. Doing a Windows Clean Install will usually will wipe everything out first. It's possible for older programs that use VBA may have problems so be sure to make a copy of anything you don't want to lose, anything that you created or that exists nowhere else.

I thought I was being clever, but I've hosed my system! I wanted to upgrade to a bigger disk. The old disk (I'll call it HD80) is an ancient 80Gb SATA I drive. The new one (HD500) is a 500MB SATA II drive. What I did was:

1. Create a partition on HD500, format it to NTFS, label it D:
2. System image backup to D:
3. Boot Puppy Linux Live USB stick
4. GParted - remove partitions on HD80, repartition, format to NTFS
5. Copy the Recovery Image folder from HD500 to HD80
6. Boot from Windows System Repair DVD
7. Try to restore the recover image to from HD80 to HD500

The recovery starts, but then fails quickly with an error "Unable to restore to backup media" error text might be slightly different from that, but I think the reason might be it's trying to recover to the drive where the recovery image is stored.

Is there any way out of this? Surely these recovery images should be portable?

Answer:Recovery image based disk upgrade - can't restore to backup medium

I am not quite sure what you were trying to accomplish. How did you "copy" the image in step5. Are you using Windows 7 imaging. When you repartitioned HD80 with GParted, did you remove the partition that contained the bootmgr (usually C or the system partition). That bootmgr is needed to get the recovery partition going.

It's running at what the ram is telling the PC to run it at.

If you want, you can try lowering the timings on the ram manually in your bios. Remeber to reset the CMOS if your computer does not boot after this.

Why not try an ISP which also has web based access? I use Waitrose mail and find it excellent - mail is scanned for virus and spam, pop3 acess is great and on occasion I can check mail via web when away.

I have 1 MAC G4 connected to my LAN. The rest are about 120 PCs with 4 NT4 & 4 Novell 5.1 servers. The MAC connected fine. The problem is that 68% of my network packets are ARP (a MAC protocol). My network traffic has at least tripled with just 1 MAC on the network.

I am using a Fluke OneTouch hardware protocol analyzer to get these stats. Before the MAC was connected the network was running mostly 802.2 & 802.3 protocols. One other fact: the MAC is using Connectix to see the NT servers. I have not yet load MAC namespace on the Novell servers.

My goal is to run IP only with 802.2.How can I reduce/eliminate the ARP traffic?

Can somebody explain to me what a LAN Based Application is? I've tried to google it but cannot find nothing. I would imagine its an application that only operates within a LAN, so i.e an office, so it wont be able to communicate to another office?

Answer:LAN Based Application

It is an application that runs only on a LAN (Local Area Network) without internet access.

The LAN could be small, 3 - 4 clients; or large with over 500 clients in multiple buildings.
I have worked in both situations and used propriatary applications that ran on the LAN, but were not designed to be accessed from the internet.

Video Conferencing, Remote Access Control, Gaming Servers, all started as LAN applications.

This is the best info I could find and it isn't much.

Use AOL on-line website interface for Email.

Working on a Mac with OS X 10.8.5 (although since my AOL access is on their web interface, I could access with other machines)

I tend to access through Firefox, but I could also use a different browser if that would help.

Need to provide copies of thousands of my AOL emails due to being deposed as a witness in a business litigation case.

How can I most efficiently copy the 1000+ emails from the AOL web-based storage to something the legal types will be able to print and read?

I'd prefer not to give a 3rd party access to my email and I'd also prefer not to have to PDF print every email, especially since I've just been roped in as a witness.

Any more-clever-than-me folks have any thoughts on how to copy a large number of emails off the AOL online site?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:AOL web-based email help

First download to a client i.e. TBird. If TBird which is easier than Outlook, follow these instructions: How to Copy Thunderbird Email to a Flash Drive | eHow
They'll be in text format so receiver won't even need TBird.

I have an MSI that installs shortcuts to the 'Start Menu' folder on a user's profile. The MSI has been assigned by GPOs to several OUs within which the shortcuts are supposed to be visible. However, when the user logs into a machine outside one of these OUs, the shortcuts are still visible. Is there any way I can assign the GPO so as to prevent this from happening? Any other workarounds?

I was wondering what is an IP address based off of, is it purely based off of your ISP?
Is it based off of the router that you use?
Is it assigned to your pc?

I recently switched from TWC to DSLextreme, I am using the same router as before, and of course the same PC.
So do I have a brand new IP address or is it the same as I had before?

Answer:What is an IP Address based off of?

External IP addresses (the one the Internet sees) is assigned to you by your ISP, and I'm sure it's based on location. If you move it would change. Switching ISP's will switch your IP, switching routers / modems / computers will not.
Internal IP addresses (within your network, generally 192.168.0.x) are probably assigned to whoever connects to the network first.. I don't know

Question: Web based storage.

Hey folks,I have a customer who's mailbox is frequently filling up because they need to receive multiple 10MB files regularly but also keep these files on the mail server for a couple of days so they can sync their laptop. They've got an allowance of 100Mb oer mailbox, but they frequently end up going over this. What I'm looking for is a web based service where files can be uploaded to an online storage system, but also where customers can log in and upload their files rather than send them via email.I've seen one at, but was wondering if anyone used any other systems that do the same thing, and what they thought of it.Doesn't have to be free, just needs to work.Cheers.

Question: Dos based software

I am trying to load a dos based accountancy software from 3 disks via the A drive. The pc is windows 2000 driven and when I access the A drive and click on the install.bat file (the main file of 15) it begins to work but then a command comes up that readsc:\winnt\system32\cmd.exec:\winnt\system32\autoexec.ntSystem is not suitable for runnimg ms-dos and microsoft windows applications.I have also tried it through a dos prompt on the desktop by tryingA:\>csm/w/w"aminst.exe"but the same happens. The software is on some of our other Windows 2000 machines, but rather than getting someone in to install it I was wondering whether you could help me. ThanksJason

Answer:Dos based software

Win2000 like Win NT and currently XP are not DOS compatable. it is at the NT indicates New Technology.I am not sure about 200o the XP precursor but XP does offer a compatability check where older programs cam be checked out and if possible modified to run.Not always successful.Intiially therefor try this.Go the My Computer, Click on Help/Indexand in the field type compatability. If you get a response try it.Otherwise go the the program makers web site if they still exsist and see if a NT/2000/XP version exists

Do a WHOIS on his IP to see if the registration information is consistent as he changes his IP. If so, you can report to the ISP listed.

If not, he's likely using a proxy.

I have a really bad problem with a brand new SSD-based rig I bought from a fairly well-known guy on our Canadian buy/sell site, RFD. It is based on a Vertex 2 60 GB drive with the Sandforce controller. Here's the rest of the specs from Everest

Quadcore Intel Core i5 750, 2733 MHz
Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3P (I'll find out if it's the Rev 2.0 shown here)
Vertex 2 SSD with Sandforce controller
4 GB G.Skill DDR3-1600 Eco 7-8-7-24
2 x ATI HD 5450 video cards

This could get long, so I apologize in advance.

This guy built me a rig a month back and when I got it, it immediately started showing me the BSOD. I told him and he took it back; he told me that he had to somehow tweak the RAM timings because he was trying a motherboard that wasn't strictly supposed to take the RAM he was using. This was a big shock to me as I never told him to save a few $$ by trying something like that. I told him before the build that stability was my #1 concern. So I get the new rig with the right mobo. No BSOD, but what immediately started happening is that the computer has these little 'mini hangs' where it just freezes up when I click on a GUI element or request a task. Never stays frozen, just hangs for 3-10 seconds. I see the little blue circle spinning. This can happen when closing a window, or when requesting some other task. It happens with multiple apps. It does not seem to me that it is happening only when I ask the SSD to access large amounts of data.

I asked the ... Read more

I'm in Canda right now, and to access Spotify and Netflix as well as blackout free games I'm changing my DNS servers to tunlr. That being said, if you use it too much as a general DNS they block you for a while.

So I was thinking... why not have custom DNS rules at the router level based on certain ports etc? For example if Spotify loads up and sends a request the router processes utilizing a different DNS server. Is this possible? What's it called? Getting sick of changing it back and forward on each computer.

Answer:Custom DNS based on app

I change DNS servers for my Rokus at my firewall. I just redirect traffic to any IP on TCP and UDP port 53 from a list of IP addresses (list my Roku IPs in the list). If I want to disable the DNS redirect I just remove/add them to the group.

I am trying to write a macro that will check a value in a column ( say < 100) and based on the answer either keep it or delete the entire row not just the data. I am trying to cull a list of any item less than a hundred in column d. Thank you

Answer:VBA to delete row based on value

The trick to deleting Rows via VBA is that they must be checked/deleted from the bottom up. If you start at the top and work your way down, a Row will be deleted, which will move all of the other Rows up at the same time that the For-Next counter increments. In other words, if you delete Row 2 when the For-Next counter is at 2, the original Row 3 will move up to replace Row 2, but the counter will increment to 3 and never check the original Row 3.So...Option Explicit
Sub DelLessThan100()
Dim lastRow, rwNum As Integer
'Determine the last Row with data in Column D
lastRow = Cells(Rows.Count, "D").End(xlUp).Row
'Loop through rows in reverse order
For rwNum = lastRow To 1 Step -1
'Delete Rows where Column D is <100
If Cells(rwNum, "D") < 100 Then
Cells(rwNum, "D").EntireRow.Delete
End If
End Sub

Answer:Can XP run Dos based floppies?

Don't know about XP but I found getting DOS programs to run on Win98 a pretty hit-and-miss affair. It's been a while since I've done it, but I seem to remember the best way was to create an MS-DOS based floppy and copy my autoexec.bat and config.sys files to it, then boot from it. You can create a DOS boot disc from click hereMake sure config.sys has these lines in it (required to access higher and extended memory):DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYSDEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXEUnfortunately, I also remember having to fiddle around a lot (sound was often a prob) and in some cases give up. Wish you the best of luck though (I remember playing Superfrog on my Amiga, fab game!).

You can just set up 2 new accounts in outlook with usernames, passwords, POP3 & SMTP addresses and they will both download to your inbox when you send/receive mail. Remember that when you send mail though, it will only be from your default mail account. That doesn't mean you can't change which is the default account before you send of course.

"Why settle for a basic build of your Firefox browser on Windows Operating Systems when you can have one that is specifically made for getting the most out of your system? Mozilla does not provide optimized browser packages for Windows, meaning you may be losing speed and efficiency when you use your browser; and truth be told, most people use their browsers all the time! That needs to change, so, here is the Pale Moon project: Custom-built and optimized Firefox browsers for Windows Operating Systems. Make sure to get the most speed and efficiency out of your browser!"

Answer:Palemoon 5 (FF based)

I've used Palemoon before, it's a great product, however I really like Chrome and will continue to use it. I might consider it some other time though.

I'm attempting to create a "Contact Page" for my web site. With it, I'm trying to send IP address with the email that they send.

Below listed is the code that I've scored from various places, but I for one, don't know much about php, and two, can't seem to figure this one out... any help would be appreciated.

on my site, I'll load the file contactpage.php - and in this contactpage.php I currently have:

Question: Irc Based Game

Ok here's the deal:

I play an rpg that uses an IRC based client, but because I have a network: Anyone else one the network who tries to logon, can't logon do to the sharing of one IP. I remember running into this problem in the past and found a program that allowed me to select certain programs to use a proxy, but only those selected programs, not everything on the computer. I cannot, however, find this program again... . I search all over C/NET for it but after an hour of searching (I know I know... im stuborn) I gave up.

Does anyone know of where I can find such a program?

EDIT: If you want the URL for this game (as proof of such), feel free to PM me. I didn't post it in here, as I didn't want to get in trouble for SPAM.

Thanks ahead of time,

Question: Web based surveys

I am looking to set up a survey on our website, but am completely confused and uneducated as to which packeage to use. Can someone please help an ignoramus. PS I don't want to spend an enormous ammount, but need something that looks good and works

Answer:Web based surveys

does your web host support either CGI or PHP ?If they do, you can use any one of a great many freely available scripts. If they don't, processing the poll/survey submissions will be more difficult. If you want a poll, just like the PC Advisor poll, perhaps you could confirm this. Likewise, if you would prefer a more comprehensive survey in the form of a questionnaire, it would help to know.Poll scripts are not the same as a more complex form used for question and answer surveys.Try these to begin with:click hereclick hereBoth of the above require PHP with a MySQL here this one requires PHP to run, but the poll does not need a MySQL here has a small application called Survey Generator, again in PHP.Chipmunk Poll is click hereAplomb Poll is click here and is pretty impressive - PHP but no database required.Simple Poll is click hereFor a wide selection of CGI and PHP scripts you can try Hotscripts for a ton of alternatives:CGI: click herePHP: click hereThe direct links I've given above are all for Open Source solutions, so you won't have to get your wallet out.If your web server does not support CGI and/or PHP, there are third party poll/survey scripts that are hosted separately from your site but included on your pages, but I don't suggest any of them since all of them that I have seen are advertisement driven. Finally, if your web host supports FrontPage Server Extensions and you have FrontPage, you could always just design a form that does what you ...
