Computer Freezes when playing games and when not playing games

Question: Computer Freezes when playing games and when not playing games

I've been having this issue for nearly a year now (probably around 9 months). It started after my little sister made me get a virus by her trying to download something onto my laptop. I've since taken it to a reputable computer shop as well as followed instructions from other computer wizs and I think it's no longer there. Issue is, my computer has kind of developed another problem after that. It freezes on it's own sometimes, when I pick it up or even when it's on a desk and immobile. It would also freeze when I play a game sometimes, loud buzzing sound as the game continues in loops I believe. I had BSOD problems earlier this year that was solved (Apparently. I haven't gotten any in about 4-5 months) when I had Windows 7 but this issue still persists.

When it would freeze and I manually turn off my computer and turn it back on, the laptop would sometimes say no wifi could be detected. At all. Not mine, not my neighbors, nothing. I've never really taken it out of the house so I don't know if it'd act the same elsewhere. I would then shut it down and take out the battery for 30 seconds before putting it back in. Sometimes the wifi would work then or I'd go connect it to my Internet Modem and the wifi would start working over there too.

So I'm not sure what's causing this problem. It's not overheating as I had it cleaned less than 4 months ago by a professional. I've had this laptop for two years and I really wanted it to last me at least 4 because I'll be going into an animation program soon and to get a laptop of the same caliber costs $1000+.

Is there anyway I can solve this freezing issue/loss of wifi on my own? I'm thinking of taking it back to the computer shop (they've had a hard time trying to find out what's wrong with it) but I'm sure they'll charge me again and I'm not willing to end up paying a lot to get this fixed. Might as well buy a new one if it costs more than $500 to fix...

P.S. I'm also having issues with my sound card where I'd plug in my headphones and it would work but when I take it out, my laptop would say it's still plugged in. Addtionally, my CD Rom Drive makes a loud sound when I try to skip through CDs and DVDs. Sometimes it won't even skip and just continue making the sound. I don't know how my laptop has gotten to this state as I've taken very good care of it (minus allowing a younger sibling to use it but you live and learn). These issues don't bother me much as I can use a DVD player for my DVD's and the sound issue isn't an issue for me. I don't really care for it since I use headphones 90% of the time or have the sound off.

Preferred Solution: Computer Freezes when playing games and when not playing games

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer freezes when ever it plays games or occasionally videos. I have done tests on the cpu, ram and graphics. Everything works fine until the graphics gets to the PhysX test then the computer freezes. It isn't overheating because it only gets to around 53 degrees when it freezes and on non-PhysX tests I can get it over 75 degrees and still run smoothly. The computer was knocked off the desk so I am wondering if I may have damaged the motherboard or graphics card. I put my mates graphics card in to see if that would make a difference and it would freeze on simple things like internet browsing.
I have an intel I7-3820, an asus p9x79 motherboard, a Nvidia Geforce GTX 560 graphics card and 8gb of DDR3 1600mhz RAM.

Answer:Computer freezes when playing games.

must be a problem with the graphic card,, sometimes intermittent problems wont just be about not show up any display but also things like that...
if it is still covers the warranty then have it replace,,,

Alright so the issue seems to be getting worse, sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. Usually i have to end up keep restarting the computer over and over after each lock-up until i finally get lucky and it doenst lock up. Sometimes it bluescreens me and sometimes it restarts the PC also. Rarely it will do it when not playing games.
I've tryed about everything i can think of doing that you would normally do when these problems first occur
I've cleaned out the PC, took vid card out then put back in, tryed new monitor, used advanced system care to clean my PC and registry up etc, nothing has helped so far.

Im starting to think something is wrong with the video card, altho my BIOS needs a update but i dont know if that has anything to do with this, and i really dont know how to update BIOS anyways. Could also be the power supply altho its 650 watts so idk, its not realy old neither only around a year or so
Im using Windows XP professinoal 32 BIT SP2
Video card is Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT if that is of any help
By the way overheating is not an issue, ive checked temperatures on most things in PC, and PC chip si running around 27 celcius-30 celicius always.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Computer freezes while playing games

First, we here at TechSpot strongly suggest you update to SP3.

Second, we also take the position that when it somes to the registry to leave it alone. More problems occur when the registry is touched than is ever fixed.

Third, please do the following...

How to find and post your Minidump Files:

My Computer > C Drive > Windows Folder > Minidump Folder > Minidump Files.

It is these files that we need (not the folder). Attach to your next post the five most recent dumps. Notice the Manage Attachments button at the bottom when you go to post the next time. You can Zip up to five files per Zip; if you only have one or two you don?t need to zip them, just attach as is. Please do us a favor and don?t Zip each one individually.

ok, anytime i play any game thats in 3d it will only work for a random amount of time and then freeze suddenly. the sound buzzes and sometimes it even forces the computer to restart. does anybody have any clue what is happening? i have changed my video card and also added more ram, but the problem never goes away. help please!

Answer:computer freezes while playing 3d games?

1) Test your RAM, and make sure it is compatible with your system.www.memtest86.comwww.crucial.comIs the rebooting problem since you added the extra RAM?2) Make sure you have adequate cooling to CPU and system3) Make sure you have an adequate power supply. If it is an "el cheapo" or came with a no name case, it should be upgraded to a name brand PSU on general principle. If you didn't spend $50 on at least a 400 w PSU it is suspect. These are the most common solutions to your problem.

My computer randomly freezes while playing games from SC2 to C&C and i don't know why its suddenly happening, it used to work just fine. When it freezes the screen just freezes the frame at the moment and the sound just buzzes. How is this happening!
OS: Win 7 64 bit
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad, Q9300 @ 2.5GHz (4 CPUs)
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5770
Motherboard: ASUS P5N-D
Chipset: nVidia nForce 750i SLI (C72P) + MCP51

Answer:Computer freezes while playing games!

When this happens, is it like the whole system (including OS) is stuck or just the game?

Please go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and open Event Viewer, go through system/applications logs, and see whether you can find something which can help us get to the root of this issue. Especially look for the events marked with yellow/red icons.

Also, do you remember when exactly did this started to happen e.g. an driver update?

Hey 7Forums,

After my last graphics card has died on me (HD6850), I have been able to borrow a friends GFX Card (HD5770) and have been having a strange problem - this problem is not unique to my computer, it also was happening in his computer when using the same GFX Card.

Right on to the problem:
What happens is that the computer will be running just fine, until I open a game.
After opening a game it will run perfectly but then every minute of so it will freeze the whole computer for maybe 5-10 seconds. Whilst doing this the sound of hardware being removing and reinserting will play (the same sound that happens if you was to unplug and re insert a usb stick)
And then this will persist as long as I have the game open, closing the game makes the problem go away.
This has only been happening since using this GFX card, and want to know if these is anyway of fixing it.
Thanks in advance,

First of all, Hi
1. Are your video drivers up to date?
2. Are you using any DVI to VGA (or what ever) adapter?
3. Did you run a stress test with Furmark or any other software?

So, for awhile now my computer has been freezing up when I play big games, like world of warcraft, lord of the rings online, etc.

When it freezes, nothing moves at all, and it makes a really wierd noise that differs from whatever i'm doing.

I've updated video drivers, sound drivers, cleaned out all the dust in the computer, tried playing with the side of the case off and nothing seems to be working.

Answer:Computer freezes up while playing games.

I had the same problem with my computer before. It turned out to be a bad power supply. It wasn't giving my graphic card and CPU enough power when I ran everything on full load. You can find a tool somewhere to see how much power you need. From what I see, you're computer not really a good gaming computer. You only have 2gig ram, 241mb dedicated graphic memory.

After playing a game for awhile my monitor will pixelate and put itself into powersave mode, and the PC will lock up. I have to shut the PC off with the power button and turn it back on with the power button. I've tried a new monitor, memory, hard drive, and bios upgrade. The only thing I haven't changed is the CPU, sound card, power supply, video card, or motherboard. I don't do any overclocking and the PC is running cool. Also, all drivers are current. This is the hardware I currently have;

Athlon 64 3400+ (newcastle)
MSI K8N NEO Platinum NForce 3
Maxtor 300 Gb SATA Diamond Max 10
2 X 512 OCZ EL PC3200
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
OCZ 420 Watt Dual Adjustable Rail Power Supply
Windows Xp Pro with SP2
BFG 6800 GT

Answer:Computer Freezes Playing Games

I noticed my 3.3 volt rail on my power supply is at 3.06. I heard it should really never be below 3.3. Could this be a cause?

Hey Guys,

I recently bought a Dell Inspiron 570. Its processor is AMD Athlon II X4 630 at 2.8 GHZ

Whenever I play games such as Call of Duty or FIFA 11, the screen falters and everything freezes. After a few seconds, the screen becomes a board of checkers in all the colors you can imagine.

I have tried calling Dell but their help is useless at best.

Is it my ATI Radeon 4200? Is it the actual screen?

I would really appreciate your help and ideas.

One more thing, a friend suggested I use the BurnIn test program and even during the running of the test, the same problem happened without finding out the results.

If I should simply buy a higher performance video card, let me know. Thanks for your help and ideas.

THe link below will show you a picture of what my screen looks like during this problem.

Answer:Computer freezes when playing games

Some questions first....Is it a full tower? Do you have a PCIE slot? Do you have a decent(over 500 watts) power supply or the stock Psu?
Do you have any 6pin power connectors?

Whenever I play games, like Warcraft III or Half life, my computer will freeze. In Warcraft it freezes when starting the game and in Half life and other games when I leave a server. This has been happening only since I reinstalled my graphics card and installed new drivers. I have tried reinstalling the drivers and going back to old drivers and that doesn't work. I have already turned down the AGP speed to 4X speed from 8X speed because my Mother Board can't handle the 8X speed. I've also tried installing newer motherboard drivers. My computer specs are a Soyo K7VME Motherboard with a AMD XP 2600+ processor, 256 MB of DDR 333 Mhz ram, and a ATI Radeon 9500 Pro graphics card.

I'm new to this forum and it is probably going to be the best place to get help for my problem.

I'm not sure if this has been posted/asked before as the search wouldn't load for me :( so I'm sorry if this has been posted/asked before.

When I play any next gen games such as C&C generals, Dawn of war or any 3d game like that my PC freezes during game play, I would get about 5 minutes of play and it will freeze, my mouse still moves until I click a certain number of times and then the mouse will freeze and the actual PC box will beep once requiring a manual shut down.

I'm not that much of a hardware of PC wizard but this is the only info I have on my PC.

Microsoft Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

AMD Sempron(tm) Processor
1.80GHz, 640 MB or RAM

It also has ATI(?) graphics card

If you could help it would be much appreciated as it's really getting me down.

Hey this is my first post, however this isn't a new problem concerning my computer.

It has become an annoying a frequent occurance on my computer. The problem is that whenever I play a game it will just freeze on screen *game picture will remain* and of course I will have to manually restart the computer. I have looked all over for a solution to this problem, in vain. I have run "dxdiag" "msconfig" in the Run menu, and i've tweaked with that every which way, and nothing has seemed to solve the problem. This has not always been an issue with my computer. When I first got my computer all games ran fine, without freezing. I have recently got my computer fixed, and restored, and I had them put in 256 MB Ram, along with my previous 256. However to my dismay when I started to play games the freezing continued.

The games I play are:
Battlefield: Vietnam
Counter Strike
Day of Defeat
Call Of Duty
Max Payne 2
Iron Storm
Soldier Of Fortune 2 *Demo, which was the first game to freeze*

I really have no idea what is wrong with my computer, and I love playing on-line games, so if anyone can suggest anything, it would be really appretiated!

P.S....I have also tryed a cleanboot of the system to get rid of all back- running programs, and it still continued to freeze.

Okay, BF2 used to be fine when i bought it. It worked crash-free for 7 months. Now i bought a new case with 6 led 120mm fans, and when i play BF2 for about 20 mins my computer freezes! I can't do anything not even the off and on button in front of the case works. I think its my power supply. Any suggestions?

PS. 400watt power supply.

400 Watt is usually ok but when adding all of the lights and extra fans might be doing it in and not knowing how good quality it PSU is leaves me wondering. I suggest a higher wattage PSU.

Ok, I got a new computer recently ad it crashes when I play games. It is an AMD Sempron 3000+ with 512 MB of RAM and a Radeon 9600 videocard. The game I am mostly playing is Warcraft 3, fully patched an I know that my computer can run it, as my old computer with a 400MHZ proccessor could with only chopping, never crashing. When it crashes the game just freezes on the screen. I have scanned with all of my antivirus and antispyware programs, and removed all spyware and viruses found. The computer only sewms to freeze during gameplay, and spikes during it too. This happens on LAN games, online games and single-player ones. SO, do you have any clue on how I can fix this. The computer also has a few rare spikes when not playing games, but it never freezes. So does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Any hlp would be appreciated, thanks.

Answer:Computer freezes when playing games

get a newer version of catalyst drivers ( i use the 4.12's, other version of catalyst drivers caused freezing problems with simple games)

or you could try the 5's cause they are out

Since you said that your computer also experiences similar problems when you arent playing a game, see if your computer is overheating.

Hi, I'm hoping someone can solve this one for me, my computer works fine until I try to play a game, then it freezes, sometimes 5 minutes into the game and sometimes longer, but it will eventually freeze, it's becoming very frustrating, do you think it could be the graphics card because it only freezes when i try to play a game. thanks

also I should mention that my graphics card is a nvidia geforce 7600gt and was brought second hand, but worked fine when I first got it about 2 months ago.

Recently I have had an issue with my computer running very poorly.
First, when opening Chrome it takes much longer than usual just to load the home page. The home page is an AVG Safe Search version of Chrome, not sure what that is about. Also, when opening a link it takes extremely long to load, and sometimes needs to be refreshed to get the page to load.
I have also developed a problem with the computer freezing while playing certain games. Most recently both Hawken and Farcry 3 have frozen, requiring a hard reset. I built this computer as a gaming PC, and it should be adequate to play these games without these issues. I've tried playing with the graphics on the lowest settings, and still have the same issues.
Please let me know what information you need to help me.
Thanks in advance for your help and expertise,
Edit: I also just noticed an "AVG Coupons" little pop-up in the lower right corner of the screen.

First post! *waves to techspot forum people*

Anyway, I built myself a new computer about 4 months ago, which has worked without any problems untill about 3 days ago. It now completely freezes whenever i try to play any sort of intensive game on it (e.g. crysis or medieval 2). The freeze generally occours a few minutes into gameplay, and the sound will loop like a broken CD and also screech at me (i can post a horrible quality phone-camera video on youtube if that helps).

The first time this happened, i was linked to a microsoft website which mentioned that it may be my CPU, Motherboard, RAM or PSU. I haven't seen an error message since

I have tried swapping power supplies (both are 500w), and i've also removed the RAM sticks and tested each one seperately. I've also run memtest86+ which found nothing.

My CPU generally runs at about 20 - 25 degrees C (it's currently running at 14), and my graphics card runs at about 80 (which is apparently normal for a 8800gtx). I've also tried swapping out the graphics card to no avail.

I've also tried removing my sound card, disabling onboard sound, reinstalling drivers for sound & graphics.

I really don't know what to do next, or how to fix this... Please help me before I throw my computer into the sea!

Just as the title suggests, I literately made an account for this site specifically to see if I can get any help on this problem.
My computer freezes randomly only while playing video games, the freeze isn't a blue screen or a crash, the computer literately freezes to something like a screenshot of what I was doing in game and nothing I can do except restarting the computer can unfreeze it. Sometimes a similar freeze occurs while playing, then 2 seconds later it unfreezes as if the computer is lagging behind the game play, making me believe that this problem is either caused by the OS or the graphics card (my power supply is brand new, but it is a possibility). This is very difficult to to troubleshoot since the freeze is random, but I can conclude that the freeze occurs usually after 2-3 hours of playing.
One solution I attempted was turning off Link State Power Management but it didn't work.

I have had my computer for a year now and it has been perfect, but about 2 months ago my computer started to BSOD and completely freeze after a few minutes of playing a video game. I installed new drivers and that fixed the problem. But out of no where the problem has risen again, but this time it doesn't BSOD, it just freezes or it shuts down randomly then upon starting it, it makes a double beeping sound. These weird crashes only happen after a few minutes of playing a video game. I have done virus checks, defragged my comp, and recently restored my computer to factory conditions, but the problem persists. Any help you guys can provide would be amazing! Thank you! :)

Answer:Computer freezes and shuts down only when playing games

Please take a look at the following thread and attach the requested reports.

Also post the make/model of the PC. If custom built post the specs.

Motherboard-CPU-Memory-Graphics card-Power Supply brand/wattage

Boot into the BIOS and post then temp and voltage readings. (+3.3V.+5V,+12V)

Install HWMonitor and post a screenshot of the program at idle and under load

Random shutdowns can usually be attributed to heat or power issues.

Hello, I'm hoping that I can get some insight on how to fix an issue with my PC.
Recently, while playing video games, the game will lock up periodically for one to three seconds. The game window will sometimes grey out and have "Not responding" in the bar up top. While this is happening, the game sound that was playing with play a half second loop through the duration of the freeze. The game will then resume after this short time. In Hearthstone, these freezes seem to happen randomly before a spell effect happens, or upon switching turns. Maybe just coincidence. In WoW and League of Legends, it just happens when it feels like it.
This issue has started just recently, and I haven't made any modifications to the machine prior to the issue.
I keep the heat sinks and whatnot inside free of dust with canned air regularly, and core temperatures according to the "Core Temp" program tells me that the max temp reached is 52.
In attempts to rectify the issue, I've uninstalled and re-installed the graphics drivers, but to no avail.
I'm running Windows 7 Professional
8GB ram
64 bit system
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250gb solid state (operating system installed)
Western Digital 1tb HD
Intel® Core™ i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz, 3501 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)

As the title saids, my computer freezes randomly when playing games. In my case "Gothic III".This is what happens: I start my game, no problems there. After playing a while (, maybe after an hour or so), my computer freezes. No hints on when it will happen, no symptoms, nothing. My screen is freezed and most of the times I hear an annoying sound as that freezes too. -.-What's weird is, some days it happens and some days it doesn't.But when it occures, it's a few times in a row.A few moments ago when I tried again, it happened 3 times.Every time I retry it happens alot earlier.I searched the forum here and I noticed somewhere I could try to clean my RAM slots. I did it with a small brush (hope that doesn't screw things up?).Also to be sure I used HijackThis. hello, i have just bought a new graphics card and overclocked my pc to achieve a 1:1 CPURAM. My temps and voltages are all fine, max temp for cpu is 55 degrees and gpu max about 75 degrees depending on how much i want to put the fan on (at 80% 75 degrees). Look at my pc specs to get an idea of the OC.
i have updated video drivers and this only occurs when im playing games.
The sound sometimes freezes with the image too, i cant return to my desktop and all i can do is manually restart my computer.
There is no error displayed in the event viewer, and im wrpping my brain with what it could be, i have a termaltake 550 WATT PSU thats about a year old. iahve 2 SATA HDD , any ideas?

Hi, ok here's my problem about six months ago i bought my pc, a pakard bell imedia 2426, and it was working mostly fine apart from on the higher spec games it would crash, i would loose all control and have to restart the computer, this didn't bother me much as it was rare, but it has started to occur more often.

I soon relised however that even though it would freeze and i would loose all control, if left for a time that seems to be between 1 minute and 3 minutes (different everytime) it would resume as normal and execute any commands i had given in the frozen time (eg control-alt-delete, or alt F4). I thought this odd but lived with it as it was still only on higher spec games and only occured about once an hour.

However recently its been happening more often and on lower spec games, it is becoming very anoying. Does anyone know what could be causing it?

One more thing, for most games after a freeze no game time has passed, although on an online game (i recently started a trial on lotr online) or any other game played online real time obviously still happens, which makes it virtually impossible to play. It may also be worth mentioning that the sound either stops or loops continually when frozen, although in the case of lotr online the music continues as normal.

Computer freezes after playing games for a while

Whenever I play games my computer freezes almost exactly 30 minutes after playing them, I can't do anyting no control, alt delete or minimize and the mouse doesn't move I just have to press the restart button. I bought a new graphics card back in september and it hasn't given me any problems until now. Well actully I don't know if it is the graphics card, it problay isn't. Does anyone have any ideas help please it is getting so annoying online. Like when I play Age of Empires III I just leave my ally all alone because I have to restart my computer.

Maybe it doesn't stop after 30 minutes I was play counter Strike source and it took over an hour before it froze up please help. Thanks

Answer:Computer freezes after 30 minutes of playing games

Sounds like either a heat problem, or a psu problem.

Check your temps.

Is your psu putting out enough power for your system?

I see from your specs that you have a 380watt psu. Is it a good quality psu, or a cheap no name brand that came with your case?

Take a look at this psu wattage calculator HERE Remember to add a further 30% to what ever figure it gives you. This is because even a good quality psu will only achieve around 70% efficiency. A cheap psu wont achieve anywhere near that.

You might also want to take a look at this excellent article on psu`s.The psu thread.

I'm at my wits end and I'm about to throw out a perfectly good computer over this problem. For the last few weeks, my computer has been freezing while playing video games. I'm not a hardcore gamer, I mostly play World of Warcraft and the Sims. At first I thought it was an issue with WoW until I deiced to play the Sims earlier this week and had my system freeze. I'm wondering if it's a problem with my internet, since I'd been having issues with that for a few months now.
Basically what happens is I open the game, log in, select what character I want to log onto, get past the load screen and anywhere within a few seconds to about 40 mins my computer will completely lock up. Sometimes I can get it to unlock by opening task manager and force the game to close, sometimes I have to hold the start button to force a reboot to get back into my system. I've updated Windows to v.1511. I've updated my graphics card, my motherboard, and anti-virus. I've opened my comp up and completely cleaned the inside and have been running with the side of the case open. I would say that my system is getting hot but I've logged onto WoW as soon as my computer would let me and it's locked up, so I think that rules that out.
I've attached the two files that are usually asked for, I also attached two screen shots of a random popup I keep getting, It's been showing up since I upgraded to Windows 10. I've been ignoring it but it could be the issue?

Hey guyz,First of all, thanks for helping me with this extremely annoying matter. Here is my problem:Everytime when I play an online game, for example: Perfect World Internation or World of Warcraft (and even Team Fortress 2), the game freezes after playing for a while (Between 20 and 40 minutes), and the only exit is the reset-button.The first thing I did was updating my videocard (drivers, if I'm right?) --> NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GTNow this worked for a while, I could play 1 hour straight in a row and then it froze again. Its very annoying. With offline-games like Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2, I dont have any problems at all.It seriously is only my online-games. Sometimes I'm only able to play for 1 min and it already freezes.Note: I'm quite a noob when it comes to programming and stuff with the computer Thanks in advance for helping me!-Cheers, Bzoeker

Hello, I have a question. My Lenovo Yoga 720 15.6" doesn't overheat, although I've noticed something rather odd. When I play Fifa 17 with the charger plugged in, the fans are very loud and the laptop gets pretty hot. When I play Fifa 17 on battery only (charger not plugged in) the fans are quite silent and the laptop doesn't get hot at all. Why is that? For all I know, I would expect the exact opposite...Thanks in advance!Kind regards,Tijs

Answer:Lenovo Yoga 720 15" : hot when playing games on charger, cool when playing games on battery???

The CPU runs at full speed when it is plugged in and runs more slowly on battery to save power.  Faster = more heat.

Speccy Snapshot Link:
Not sure if I am required to provide any additional information at this point but I'll try my best to explain the situation.
Over the last couple years I have been experiencing various different types of PC crashes and freezes while playing certain games. Restoring, factory resetting, and upgrading hardware have not made a noticeable difference. The errors have included hard crashes where the computer immediately restarts itself, BSOD with various different error codes, complete freezes where the screen locks and does nothing without a manual pc reset, and other times the game itself will crash and ill just have to restart the game. This definitely seems to happen more with more graphically or memory demanding games such as PUBG, Wolfenstein (both New Order and New Colossus), The Witcher 3, etc. But it has happened before on less intensive game such as World of Warcraft, just certainly less often. But this has been a very irritating issue to deal with and I would greatly appreciate any help I can get to resolve it. I am personally out of idea on what to do other than completely building a new PC.
Thank you all. I will provide any and all information requested to assist in diagnosing.

Which hardware remains from the original build?Which hardware remains from the first time it started crashing? Your UEFI/BIOS (version 1605) dates from 2012.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting.FYI - W8 and W10 communicate more with the UEFI/BIOS than previous versions of Windows, so it's important to ensure that the UEFI/BIOS is kept up to date (and the outdated UEFI/BIOS' may be the cause of some compatibility issues).Although you appear to have a reasonable number of Windows Update hotfixes for this version of your OS, please double check for any new Windows Updates.  It only takes one update to cause a problem, so it's essential that you have all of them.  The actual number is not important.  Rather it's important that you checked manually, installed any available updates, and didn't experience any errors when checking or updating. You have 3 hard drives.  What is the make/model/wattage and age of your Power Supply? The purpose of this question is to get you to evaluate your PSU.- PSU's tend to get less efficient with age- adding components over time may decrease the ability of the... I have recently purchase a new system ( 2 weeks back). All hardware is brand new except for the graphics card.
The hardware specs are:
OS: Win 7 64 bit Service Pack 1
PSU: GX-650 watt
RAM: 8 GB DDR3 Kingston Single stick
Processor: Intel Core i5 4670k 4th generation 3.4 ghz
Graphics: Nvidia XFX Gts 250 512 mb
Motherboard: Intel DB85FL
Hard Drive: Seagate 1 T.B

Ok, Now the problem is that whenever I play any video game (such as GTA IV, Devil may Cry DMC, Metro: Last Light), my computer screen just freezes after 5 to 10 minutes of gameplay. My keyboard and mouse stops working and the sound just stops. Only way to get out of this freeze is to restart the system manually. Recently I put out my graphics card from the motherboard and played the above mentioned games with intel hd graphics 4600 (Built-in) and no freeze occur whatsoever and I played for hours.

But my gpu never had any of these problems when it was installed in my old system and games works just fine. Need to mention that my gpu is PCI-E 2.0 and my motherboard supports a PCI-E 3.0 graphics card. I have read many forums that motherboards have backward compatibility and can run 2.0 cards as well. Also used windows memory diagnostic tool and it did'nt find any problems with the ram.I have also stressed the graphics card using Furmark but my gpu temp. reaches to abotu 100"C and I stopped the test.

Since you have already tested your system without the video card and it works fine for hours Also that when u ran furmark your Video card temps went out of control
now Since you don't want to purchase a new video card I would say to add a fan to cool your video card and see what happens
At this point it is looking like your video card is the issue and the games such as metro last light is a very heavy game even on ultra low settings which will push your video card causing it to over heat and freezes

I've installed the latest driver 4 my gfx card (integrated) , I've scanned with kaspersky, panda, avg, ad-aware and windows defender and I've cleaned up my registry and disk with Ccleaner.

I've got 223 MB RAM, which seems to get eaten up as fast as heck during start-up and afterwards, so I downloaded XP FreeRAM Pro or w/e. It got 4 stars on and IMO it works well. Computer temps are within safe levels (40 -55c max) and it makes no distinct sounds when frozen. When it freezes, the screen stays still and sound turns off. Basic functions like turning on the CAPS lock light are working. I've got my PC tuned up for fast performance, no desktop BG, no window effects (it looks like windows 98) only 4 desktop icons (including the mystring thing). I only got ZoneAlarm firewall, AVG and FreeRam on my taskbar. Still slow, sometimes. I dunno what else to do.

I'm running on an AMD Duron, with VIA motherboard (with S3 Unichrome integrated gfx)
and VIA AC97 audio controller (which i haven't found an update for).

Any suggestions? Thx in advance.

Oh, and it freezes on low-end games. Pharaoh only needs 32 MB RAM and I can't run it w/o freezing it's maddening.

It's crashing one or two times a day, I either get a black, white or mixed color screen. (display looks messed up, sometimes i get white with random lines and stuff) I had a song playing on youtube last time and it played all the way through.

Here is a cpuid monitor of my computer. Temperatures are always good, and it crashes even if they're on the low side.

I want to believe it's my graphics card, but 10 minutes of furmark didn't even phase it, the games I play use such a laughably small amount compared to it.

Sounds like the laptop is getting too hot.....see if you blow the dust out of the place near the fan....and think about getting a cooling pad for the bottom of the laptop.

The driver you downloaded maybe the problem....please tell us the make and model of the laptop?

I am new to your site. Could someone please tell me why my computer sometimes freezes while my granddaughter is playing a game online? I have as much memory that my computer will accept. Is this something to do with my computer or is it the website?

I would appreciate any help since I am pretty much a beginner at this.

Answer:[SOLVED] Computer freezes while playing online games

Hello and welcome to TSF

Alright, i have this silly problem that whenever i'm playing most games the computer randomly shuts down; no error message, no warnings, no nothing, just shuts down in a split second with the screen going black. I also had rare cases where it rebooted itself on it's own.
But then there's another case where the whole computer freezes and the screen changes into blue lines. I have no idea what's causing this. Oh, and it doesn't shut down/freeze when i'm just browsing the web.

Here's my specs:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate , 32 bit
Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60GHz, x64 Family 6 Model 23 Stepping 10
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 2047 Mb
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series, 1024 Mb
Hard Drives: C: Total - 305142 MB, Free - 117180 MB;
Motherboard: ASRock, G41M-S, ,
Antivirus: AntiVir Desktop, Updated and Enabled

This mostly happens when i play CS:S, Borderlands and Fallout 3. First started with Borderlands.

Here's my speedfan temps when doing nothing:

System: 38C (blue arrow)
CPU: 42C (green checkmark)
AUX: 35-37C (blue arrow)
HD0: 40C (green checkmark)
Core 0: 40-42C (tends to change into blue arrow, green checkmark or red arrow)
Core 1: 40-42C (same as Core 0)

Speedfan temps when running a game
System: 38C (blue arrow/green checkmark)
CPU: 45C (red arrow)
AUX: 37C (blue arrow)
HD0: 40C (green checkmark)
Core 0 and 1: 53C (fire)

I'm worried about the core temps...

This is something that I've been having trouble with for a couple months now, but recently I've noticed it happening more often. The problem is essentially me playing games or watching videos and having the sound, video and mouse completely freeze up. I then have to hard restart the computer, and sometimes my wireless connection will not work as well and I'll have to restart the computer again to make the WiFi work. I'm running Windows 7 SP1 on Bootcamp on a Macbrook Pro that I bought in 2009 I believe. Not sure if it is malware or something else that is causing the problem. Hopefully Tech Support can help me out here. If there's anything else you need from me before you can help me, please let me know. My Hijack Log, dds.txt and attach.txt are as follows:

Hi I just recieved a new custom built computer from Cyberpowerpc. I installed the newest drivers for everything but for some reason when I scroll to fast on a web page, watch videos at full screen, attempt to play a game or even when I am trying to open a program my computer screen becomes distorted with pink and green lines and my mouse and keyboard are unresponsive and sound dies within 10 seconds. If I wait for a good 10 minutes sometimes my computer will restart. If anyone has any advice what so ever it will be greatly appreciated because I am ready to take out my graphics card and use the on board one. If you need any information i will be more then happy to give it to you.

Hello all,

I've been having a few problems with my laptop since I bought it. The problem mainly occurs when I'm playing a game (usually xcom: enemy unknown or deus ex HR at the moment) but has occurred when I'm browsing the internet (albeit far less often). The BSODs appear to be random but I'm using a blue tooth mouse and have noticed the BSOD will usually happened if I'm using it. I've also noticed that my laptop screen with black out for a split second on games that are quite graphics intensive for my system.

Its been frustrating me a lot so I reinstalled and fully updated windows 7. The GPU drivers are all up to date also.

I've attached the SF file that is required and would greatly appreciate any help.

Thanks for your time

Hi i have been having i problem with my pc

When i play games it will randomly just freeze and the screen will fill up with lots of stationary vertical lines. and what ever sound was last on will continuesly loop.

Strangly it does not seem to be related to the intensity of the game

eg. i can play Far Cry 2 (all settings on highest)for longer than i can play a old game like Age of empires 3 which crashes all the time. also Call of Duty world at war (highest settings & Full HD) doesnt crash at all.

i mainly use my pc for Architectural Drafting and 3-D rendering which keeps my cpu load at 100% for up to 20 minutes but the pc never crashes?

also when the pc freezes and i reboot my c-drive has more on it like 2 gigs or so

Hey everyone.

I built this computer about a month ago and was quite excited to be running a new configuration and my first 64-bit OS. The excitement didn't last very long, however, as I began experiencing some very strange freezes while playing World of Warcraft. For the next few weeks, I tried everything I could possibly have done, from rolling back all my drivers, installing new versions, removing my second GPU, changing video and game settings. I also tried analyzing my memory dump files, but here's the catch: Windows never generated one. For a while, I thought WoW was the problem. But then, while playing another 3D-intensive game a week ago, it happened again and proved to me it wasn't.

The freezing happens at random. From the 30+ or so times it's happened, I can't nail down a single common point as it's just that, random. The two factors that I can see have increased my chances and frequency of freezing were being in Raids with 10 to 25 other players (which increases the strain on the machine) and whenever someone in my network accesses files in my boot drive while the games are running. The former is more common, and the latter has happened once, which caused me to crash 5 or 6 times in a short period of time, more than my nightly average.

As for what happens, the entire machine just freezes in place and becomes completely unresponsive. No errors, no blue screens, keyboard and mouse go dead. It just locks up and stays there for as long as I don't hold down the powe... Read more

Alright guys, any help would be greatly appreciated. I got an Athlon 700, 128 ram (pc133), gigabyte 7-vm motherboard, voodoo 3 3000, Via pci audio controller(what came with comp). I am running under Win 98. I have all the latest drivers for each of these. The thing is my computer freezes during almost any game I play. It happens at random times, but usually after between 15-30 minutes. Sometimes I can play for 1 hour, but then eventually it will just kick me to windows, or it will say there was a page default error. I have no clue where to start with this. All my windows programs usually run completely fine and don't crash, it just seems to be games. I've pasted one of the popus errors right below to maybe give an indication of what the problem may be. Any help would be appreciated, thanks ahead of time.

Did you install the right/recent videocard driver GeForce Release 182
Check the gpu temperature with GPU-Z techPowerUp! :: Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.3.3
Might be overheating?

As for the 4GB ram. You're probably running windows xp 32bit which only recognizes 4GB in total including 512mb memory of your videocard. And it also a bit of ram is reserved for windows to run.
Which is why it'll only recognize 3.3 .

For it to see the full 4GB ram you'll need a 64-bit OS.

Hello guys. As described in the title often times when I play video games it happens that my computer either gets a bluescreen or freezes and I have to shut it down and restart it.
I already asked in a few German forums but they all just wanted me to buy me a new computer lol. Anyways I first thought that it could perhaps be that my graphicscard is the issue, but after replacing my old gtx 560 with a new 970 and the bluescreens and freezes continueing I want to find out which hardware is the reason for the crashes and replace that one, since I don't have that much money to buy a new computer everytime something doesn't work. It'd be nice if you could help me find out what's causing those errors.
Here my Hardware;

Hey ya'll, I've got this problem where when I play games and things of that sort for about 30 minutes to an hour. My computer just seems to kind of freeze. Like , my monitor goes into a type of standby mode....... where its still on but I just see all black. And I cant use control alt delete, or alt tab, anything like that. Nothing seems to let me move....or do anything.

I was wondering if any of you might know the reason, or the solution.
I think it COULD be my video card over heating.... but im not very sure.
The game it usually happens on is, Half-Life Counter-strike.

I run a p4 2.0ghz 256mb ram with a Xpert 128 ATI vid card.
on a Win 98 OS ... I know I need more ram, and a better OS. Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks

Just a few things to check then, Power Mangement settings and Screesaver settings. Do not allow screensaver. Also do u have an app which tells u the temp of the system and cpu etc.. Try getting one if u havent and check the temps after running the pc for a while. Also visit here

Allright, so I bought my PC about 1.5 years ago, I will post my specs at the end of my post.

When I recently bought Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, I found out about the following problem,
When I play certain maps online, after sometimes 5 seconds and sometimes 5 minutes my screen either looses contact with my monitor(Like its shut off), or shows me alot of colored stripes vertically on the screen, and my PC now is uncontrollable.
Also the last sound I hear'd keeps looping, sometimes slow and sometimes quick (like sort of a screeching sound)
I cant do anything but hold the on/off button on my case.

I remember I also had this problem with Crysis, about half a year ago but it only happened once in maybe 10 hours playing so at the time I thought it had something to do with my crysis play disk (scratched) or something like that.

I made a short video about what happens and uploaded it:
I not sure, but I dont think its heat related becuase It also happen when I turn on my pc when I get home and play the game right away, it still crashes in 5 seconds at some maps, Also at a few other maps I can play for like 1-2 hours without anything happening.

I really hope some one can help me with this : /

My specs:

Power Supply: 650W Coolermaster
Motherboard: ASUS P5K
Processor: Intel Core2Duo E6750 - 2.66GhZ
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD3750
RAM: Nanya 2GB GDDR2_667
HDD: Samsung 500Gb

Hello. I have problem with my computer. It often freezes for a few seconds, and then restarts. What is strange: it occurs much more often when NOT playing games on fullscreen, especially hardware-hungry games. It happens almost only when i do things in Windows, such as using Word or other programs, or surfing internet. I can play Witcher 3 for many hours without any problem, but for example using Word, Excel, surfing internet or just watching desktop wallpaper makes my PC restart very often. Please help me, i have no idea what causes it and how to repair it. Any ideas?

Could you try reverting to 330.xx drivers? I saw few people having issues with newer drivers with IdeaPads.

While my son is playing his games, the computor will automatically freeze up, it has never done this before. why is it all of a sudden doing this? I even tried to exit the program and reopen it, but it won't let him in on certain openings on the game!

Answer:computor freezes up while playing games

Unfortunately, could be many different things. Have you recently installed a new program? If so, try uninstalling it and see it that does it. A good first step would be to reinstall that game and see if that works.

Often, It just freezes and responds to nothing but the power button.
Other times, It restarts or displays a bluescreen, but this happens quite rarely.
On the BSOD, the problem file starts with ATI, i'm not really sure, I only got to see it for a second.
Everything else works fine though.
Please help guys.

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo T5600
GPU - Ati Radeon X1200
OS - Win7 Ultimate 32 bit

Answer:Samsung R60 Plus freezes while playing games

Seems to be a graphics problem. You should be able to get a better look at the error by turning off Auto Restart. In W7 (from
Click on the Start button and then on Control Panel.
Tip: In a hurry? Type system in the search box after clicking Start. Choose System under the Control Panel heading in the list of results and then skip to Step 4.
Click on the System and Security link.
Note: If you're viewing the Small icons or Large icons view of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4.
Click on the System link.
In the task pane on the left, click the Advanced system settings link.
Locate the Startup and Recovery section near the bottom of the window and click on the Settings button.
In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.
Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.
Click OK in the System Properties window.
You can now close the System window.
From now on, when a problem causes a BSOD or another major error that halts the system, Windows 7 will not force a reboot. You'll have to reboot manually when an error appears.
Hope that you get the BSOD some time soon!

At christmas i got a presarlo c700 (i think thts the product name). and i installed all my sims 2 games on and they ran great for a couple of months, but then it started freezing slightly, and after while i couldnt play on them any more they just wouldnt run. its also started doing the same, the dreamfall new game. they all have high graphics so that could have been it, but whats puzzled me is that they all used to work fine, and they all still run on another please?

Answer:freezes when playing games, didnt used to =S

How full is your harddrive?Windows uses a swapfile which grows in size as you play games, etc.If the swapfile becomes too big it will seriously affect your laptop's performance.Do you ever defragment your harddrive or scan for viruses and spyware?Regular maintenance is necessary these days

I usually take pride in googling and figuring out my own problems, but it seems like I ran out of theories of why my PC freezes when playing graphic intensive games. In the event logs I spotted a bug check that could assist me in figuring out why the PC crashes. Unfortunately, I do not have any experience in debugging windows dump files. I would greatly appreciate anyone who can assist me.

Answer:PC Lockup and Freezes when playing BF3/other games

Got it again today. I tried using the tool Whocrashed and it gave the following results:
crash dump file: C:\Windows\memory.dmp
This was probably caused by the following module: unknown_module_00000000`00000000.sys (Unloaded_Unknown_Module_00000000`00000000+0x0)
Bugcheck code: 0x124 (0x0, 0xFFFFFA8006AB8028, 0xFE000000, 0x800400)

Does unknown_module mean I do not have drivers installed for a specific computer component?

Hey all. I have problem, again.

While playing games my PC freezes, I get sound loop, PC restarts. However no blue screen occurs, it just restarts. Sometimes I can play forever and no bsod will occur, but sometimes bsod occurs after few minutes.

I've ran memtest86 for 16hours, no errors. Prime95, no errors. Cleared CMOS. Fresh windows install. Temperatures of CPU and GPU are normal.

My PC: Asrock P67 Fatal1ty
Intel i5 2500K
Corsair Vengeance 4x2GB
ATi HD 6850 Sapphire
SSD Samsung 830, 128gb
HDD WD Caviar Blue
Crosair TX650 v2

When I run Driver Verifier and select all drivers (expect Microsoft ones), pc crashes before boot logo loads (this time I get blue screen, but only says STOP: 0x0000001E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF80002E73736, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000), nothing more) and doesn't create minidump. When I deselect all drivers and select only random ones (tried with several of them) windows loads, but when I log on to my account, pc freezes before it completely loads (this time, no blue screen occurs and minidump is not created).

Since crash dump mentions ATI driver, I reinstalled graphics driver, but BSOD still occurs.

Answer:PC Freezes, no blue screen, while playing games

Hello SoapyCro.

► Uninstall the programs:
Alcohol 120%
AsRock Utility
Catalyst Control Center.
► Then if it crashes again, Do it:
Download and install |MG| Driver Fusion (Driver Sweeper) 1.1.1 Download.
Reboot the computer in Advanced Boot Options, safe mode. Search Driver Fusion in your start menu, and remove all components of your nVidia display driver.
Boot normally now. Go to Drivers - Download NVIDIA Drivers, follow option two to search for the appropriate driver for your system automatically, and install it.
Let us know the situation.

about a year ago i had problems on my PC where sometimes during playing games i would get a vertically black and white striped screen and the computer would restart (it happened when playing high requirement games mostly) . That has not happened in a long time but now a new problem occurred.

Two days ago i installed WoW and while i was playing it with my friend it froze a couple of times, like 3-5 times a day. I know very little about computers but i will tell you what i know. When it freezes the screen stay frozen for a 10-20 seconds then it says"DVI no signal", keyboard doesn't work while it is frozen, but Skype was working fine. Me and my friend continiued to communicate normally even though it was frozen. the freezing also happened in less requiring games like Hearthstone (however it never froze in Overwatch, don't know if that means anything).

I was hoping to find help here or if someone can tell me which programs to download for monitoring my PC and logging its behavior.

Thank You

p.s.- i also included a photo of the problem from a year ago if it helps

The computer is a Compaq Presario 7AP140 7000 series. It has 800 MHz processor, 128 MB memory, and a 16MB Nvidia Riva TNT2 Model 64 Card. The problem with the comp is that it freezes and reboots when trying to play a DVD or some of the more complex games. Upon reboot I get a wasn't able to draw picture error that may have been caused by the divice driver for Nvidia Riva TNT2. The computer has XP on it, it had 98SE with the same problem. I noticed that this is a common problem but it seems like the way to fix it is still not clear. Any suggestions?

Have you tried updating your drivers from the manufacturer's website? And by that, I mean not Asus's site. Go to Intel's site and reinstall the drivers from there.

When I am playing "Gardens of Time" and other games.
After a while the cursor freezes and I have to restart the laptop.

The problem doesn't occur with general computing tasks such as e-mails etc.
I have made sure that the Laptop isn't over heating by using the unit on a hard surface with the vents clear.

Any ideas?

Answer:Satellite L750 freezes playing some games

Maybe the notebook?s internal temperature is not too high in order to trigger a automatic shut down but the high temperature could affect the memory modules which cause the game freezing.

At the other hand the game would not run properly due to the old display driver but I think it?s more temperature related issue. The heat dissipation is much higher playing different games and this sets the temperature to a higher level.

Did you try to clean the cooling fans? You should definitely check this!

I clean the fans using compressed air spray.

Dust and debris could affect the air circulation and this one of the reasons why the temperature goes up?

Answer:Random crashes/freezes when playing games

The most recent crash dump file is from a while ago (beginning of August) so I doubt that it will relate to something that has just started to happen.

If you want to start some diagnostic tests the first one to try is the memtest86+ to test your 8GB of memory. This will require an overnight run to achieve the at least 8 passes that are required.
