Preferred Solution: adjust file preview size on file explorer details pane

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: adjust file preview size on file explorer details pane

There seems to be a minimum size which is pre-defined, you cannot make it smaller. The preview and details pane size is set by the DetailsContainerSizer binary value in the Registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Modules\GlobalSettings\Sizer
I do not know of way to make the thumbnail larger in the details pane. It is larger in the preview pane.

I would like to see more audio details in win10 file explorer preview pane, especially the channels and bitrate for movies in the *.mkv format. (I would like to see if they include DTS 5.1, languages, subtittles etc.)

Before the latest creators update, this information was shown in the preview pane (along other video-details). Now I can't get it back. Icaros doesn't seem to help in this case.

What can I do?

Hi. According to the final entries on this old thread:

I do not want to see a large space to the right of my photos & files in file explorer. I want to see the full space filled with them. I have been searching for hours for the mythical "General Tab" which supposedly contains the key but it doesn't seem to exist. Does anyone know if this display is possible?

When opening Excel files off our DFS while having Windows Explorer Preview Pane enabled our users will get the "open in read-only" notification about 60% of the time.  This forces them to open the file in read-only mode...or close out, cross
their fingers, and try opening again.
I applied the reg keys listed in this support article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942146, rebooted the Win7 Pro x64 test client, and we still get the File Lock notices when the preview pane is enabled.  Anybody else figure out a solid solution for this
issue besides disabling the preview pane?
Thanks,
D

Answer:Explorer Preview Pane causes File Lock

Thanks for the link Alex.  The client is Win7 SP1 and I've tried adding the OpLock registry keys and rebooting but no change.  At the moment we're not pushing out Office patches so I may run a full update for grins.

I noticed one of the suggestions in the technet post you provided is to disable the preview pane - which is allowing the file open process to run as expected for us.  Luckily there are very few people that have explorer setup with preview
pane so there's only been one report so far.

Hi to all, I'm sure a lot of people are annoyed with the same bug...it apprently happens on all Windows 7 editions. When you open explorer, and activate the preview pane using the button on the uper right, you can define the size like any pane by clicking and draging the vertical border line. But when you close explorer and open it again, the size is not kept, and the preview pane is very big, you have to click and drag everytime to resize it. It doesn't happen if you double-click on computer, it only happens when you click on explorer icon which opens the libraries location, the default location (i'm not completly sure but i've only seen that in this way). It seems that Explorer doesn't read correctly the REG_BINARY of "ReadingPaneSizer " (or maybe the values "PageSpaceControlSizer " or "PreviewPaneSizer ") in the key "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Modules\GlobalSettings\Sizer " when it opens, but it writes it apparently correctly when you manual resize the pane, and the value isn't change before manual action, even when explorer opens and display preview pane in a different size. And the last thing, when you open explorer, activate preview pane, resize preview pane, deactivate it, close explorer, open explorer again, activate preview pane, the size is the good one, preserved from previous explorer window... So question is, does someone know a way to fix this *really* annonying bug? I can't activate the pr... Read more

Having decided to use Vista's Mail/Contacts/Calendar, I was quite excited to see that when I hovered the mouse over the Extra Large Icon of a contact, all of his details appeared in the right hand side preview panel ...... for a moment!

Now that capability has disappeared altogether!

I have checked under Organize x Layout that the Preview Panel is checked but it remains blank all the time!

What have I (it) done to remove this handy feature?
........... but there's more ................. the contact's name comes up say michael smith.contact but I only want Michael Smith to show (not the word "contact").
When I try to rename it to a straight Michael Smith, Vista gets all upset and starts tellimg me that it probably won't work anymore if I persist!!

There's gotta be a way to rename these contacts!

I recently found I could not rename an MS Word file selected in Windows Explorer while the Preview Pane was "on". Apparently, Windows opens a Winword process to display the file and Windows considers the file "open". With Preview Pane "off", the Winword process quits and the file can then be renamed.

Is this a "feature" of Windows or a bug that Microsoft can / should fix?

Answer:Preview Pane Issue - Can't rename file

Neither. At least with Office 2010. Renaming working just fine with preview pan.
Winword does start, but you can easily rename file, and preview pan just blinks for a second and displays the content again.

Do you have UAC turned off by any chance?

So ya know in Windows Explorer, there's that Preview pane that's really handy for showing a really big version of a jpg thumbnail, right? I find though if I happen to click on an html file - say, to delete it - it takes a while to load the Preview before I can do anything - such as delete it. I would like to know if there is a way to tell Explorer to NOT show a preview for html files only. (The preview is often crap anyway - what's the point?) So yeah. I didn't see any specific settings to pick and choose what gets shown and what doesn't, so maybe you lot have a registry hack for me? Or some other thing that will tweak this otherwise fairly useful feature? Thanks!

Answer:disable Preview pane for certain file types?

I don't believe there is any way to toggle the view on specific files, if there is a registry hack I would be excited to hear about that aswell however!

it seems i can view all files in the preview pane except microsoft office files. i know it used to work before but not sure if that was before windows 7. the preview pain shows a no preview available message and i have the show preview handlers box checked in the folder options, view, advanced settings window. i don't use this feature all the time but it is handy. thank you for any assistance

Answer:preview pane file viewing issue

Hello,

For the viewer pane to work the handlers have to be installed. They are installed by the Office setup. I'm not sure if any version before Office 2007 installs these handlers. If you don't have Office you can download the Word Viewer and Excel viewer:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down...ails.aspx?id=4
this is the link to the word viewer. I believe this would also install the correct handler and you would see previews in the preview pane.

Hope this helps.

Hi all

I need some help.

Just of late im having a little problem with Select a file to Preview pane in Open ( when opening a file with another program other than windows)
I want to close this as i dont need the preview pane, especially in open
Normal windows are fine and the option to turn preview on and of can be found in Organise/ Layout.
Unfortunately this is not the case on the open window while opening a file in this example Nero....... Organise/ Layout in this window does not have the option to turn the preview pane off
So how do i do this?
See pic below

Answer:Select a file to Preview pane in Open

Hello Ripbox,

Since the preview pane is a universal setting for those type of dialogs, a workaround may be to open Notepad, and click on File -> Open, turn off the preview pane, and close Notepad. It should change it for all "Open" type dialogs afterwards as well.

Hope this helps.

i want to preview epub files in preview pane of windows 7

Answer:How to view epub file in preview pane

Hi, Welcome to Sevenforums.

I am not sure about this but, there is no way for Windows to be able to pull the cover out of an ePub and display as a thumbnail. You would have to make changes in registry to do that.

These are changes required in registry. (this is for 32 bit Windows). Only do this if you are comfortable
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.epub]
@="epub_auto_file"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\.epub\shellex]

I use a program for work, and it saves files with an extension .blt
Those files can also be opened fine in notepad, and are 100% text based.

In every PC since windows 7 I have always managed to use PreviewConfig.exe to set the extension viewable in the preview pane. I have had two previous PC's running 10, and have been able to get this working without much trouble.

No matter what I try, I simply can not see my files contents in the window preview pane.
Any suggestions?

Windows Explorer blocks all images in HTML pages when I view them in the preview pane, claiming it's for security reasons. Those files are stored locally on my hard drive. I'm viewing them while offline, and in fact, I created them myself, so there's no security risk whatsoever. I suspect that this has something to do with a component of Internet Explorer, even though I use a Mozilla-based browser now and disabled IE a long time ago. How can I stop this annoyance? Is there a registry tweak?

Hi,

I am working on three monitors of different sizes. Multiple displays mode is set to: "Extend desktop to this display". In other words I can e.g. work with multiple apps or File Explorers opened and arranged for convenience.

All three monitors are set to recommended resolutions, size of text, apps and other items.

It is crucial for me to have the Preview Pane activated as I need to go quickly through multiple files without the necessity of opening them with an dedicated app.

I also need the Preview Pane handlers activated, to easily rotate the files if needed.

All would be great if the preview pane could be maximized to use the entire space of the space available on the monitor. It is not. As I click on the Left Hand edge of the Preview Pane to change its size (maximize it), the Preview Pane changes the size and follows the Left Edge but at the same time the Right Edge of the Preview Pane follows the Left Edge that is being adjusted thus not using the entire space available.

What I am after is to have the preview Pane Right Hand Edge to be as close as possible to the Right Hand edge of the monitor and the Left Hand edge of the Preview Pane as close as possible to the File List.

The other problem is that the Preview Pane lower edge is not reaching the bottom of the monitor. Which again makes the Picture or File content not as big as possible.

I would really appreciate your advice as I`ve been fighting it for some time already.

Thank you.

Why is there no folder.jpg displayed in Preview Pane for file folders when a view setting of list or details is selected?
(Yes i know about the difference between Details Pane and Preview Pane selection under the File drop down.)

Now if I go in to a folder and select anything, there is a preview, but not out side the folder like there is if I select Large Icons. I cannot see whats inside the folder by selection ether in List or details view. It really sucks because I often have to select Large Icons a scroll down a bunch of boxes rather then hit the arrow down and scroll down each folder looking for it contents.

Now I notice. Shortcuts to folders....will display the folder.jpg inside the folder.
But only short cuts do this.

Any way the change this?

Thanks in advance.

I was wondering if you know if there is a way to improve Vista's Video Preview on the Details Pane.

The problem I see is that Vista shows the very 1st second of video, while Windows 7 shows the 4th. That's why many of the video previews on the details pane show a black screen on vista instead of actual video.

If anyone else has the answer, I will be really grateful.

When I open an instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane show little or nothing (no drives, folders, etc.). Also the preview pane does not show a preview for any selected files (See Capture1.JPG).
If I open a second (or higher) instance of windows explorer, the navigation pane functions properly (the preview still does not show) (See Capture2.JPG).
I have previews set to show (See Capture3.JPG).
Also occasionally, the file icons will be blank instead of showing the file type specific icon. When this happens, the address bar also seems to take a long time to load. The load bar will stop before reaching the end and won't finish (See Capture4.JPG).

Does anyone know what is going on or how to fix this?

FYI I am running 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

Try Explorer++ and see if you get the same problem.

Need to enable "Folders" view.
If it works then you can rule out problems with system files and it's probably a buggy shell extension.

Been grappling for some time to customizing the right pane of either Win7 or Win10 (not sure if they respond the same) to allow permanent column and column title arrangements. Ideally I would like to apply such attributes to a specific folder and all it's sub-folders. An example is below:
I would also love to be able to set these columns as fixed widths, but this is not as important as the specific columns themselves.

I went from XP to W8 Pro. With XP, a pictures folder allowed the icons to represent a small version of the picture; the filmstrip option was a nice bonus.

With W8, the icon, no matter what size, has a generic look to it--same for all the pictures. I enable Preview Pane, and the same thing happens. No preview of the picture on the preview pane, just a much larger generic icon.

I see screen views on the web of it actually working, but I can't get it to. I am tired of looking.

Please help.

How can I open explorer to a particular left pane file? I want to open to: Libraries, Documents, My documents (with the files showing underneath my doucments). I have been able to open to: user, my documents, but I would rather open to the libraries file structure - it looks cleaner.

Thanks, in advance.

Is there a way to display file folder location in the details pane view?
In the search box I've type *.* and it display all files.  There are duplicate files I want to delete so I want to see which folder they're in without checking each file's properties.

Thanks in advance.

This is something that's been bothering me since I upgraded this Dell XPS8700 to windows 10 some two weeks or more ago.

The left pane in File Explorer seems to duplicate my drive letters and info other than what's under the entry "This PC".

If I look down the list, starting just below the Libraries folder, the drive letters are repeated but not all of them.

Like I have under This PC : C: , DVDRW D:, E:, F: , a card reader, H,L,K, external drives L:, another card reader letter M:, a second external drive N:, followed by some NAS folders I have mapped, V, W, X. and Y.

Down past the Libraries folder are again: H, L, N, M, K, and I, then Network etc, Homegroup etc.

Hard to describe, I could do a screen shot and post it if that would help see it.

How and why are all these drive letters getting into this tree twice? Anyone?

TIA - Gene

In File Explorer, if a folder is selected in the left navigation pane, the normal behaviour is for the right pane to display sub-folders of that selected folder.

The attached screenshot shows strange behaviour.

If the library "1Documents" is selected in the left pane, there are three sub-folders: Documents, Downloads, and Downloads. (The Downloads folder with the yellow icon is an empty folder that I can't remove. It's discussed in another post.)

I would expect to see exactly the same three sub-folders in the right pane.

In fact, the entire combined contents of Documents and Downloads are shown. You can see that "Anki" is displayed twice. One instance of Anki is in the Downloads folder. The other instance is data that is used by Anki, and is in the Documents folder.

BTW: "Beyond Compare" is a data file in the Documents folder. All other visible files in the right pane are in the Downloads folder.

How can I rectify this issue so that only three folders are shown in the right pane?

Thanks.
.

Answer:Why is the right pane of File Explorer showing the wrong contents?

I assume you have been moving the location of your default Windows libraries. Have you considered, with a full copy of your data offline, resetting the location without copying your files back to c: drive. Then redoing it. Could I ask how you did the move? Did you use the Windows "Move" facilities found on the "Location" tab when you look at the library properties?

I have noticed a GUI issue with File Explorer that is intermittent. It seems to appear at some times, then a Windows update fixes it, then it comes back in another update.
The symptom is a long delay when copying files from one File Explorer window to another.
What happens is this - when the mouse cursor doing the drag passes over the navigation pane on the left side, it usually passes over a drive very briefly. At that moment, the GUI thinks I want to do something on that drive so it pauses a moment to check something, then it goes on again where it left off.
This does not happen if I copy or cut and paste folders.
There may be some internal delay value that is used to avoid this sort of thing and it gets changed every now and then.
I do have a lot of Drives and Volumes, so there's no easy way to avoid passing over them. But I've never been in the habit of copy/paste, so I keep on doing it.
Does anyone know what can be done about this?

I have recently purchased a Satellite C660D-14W, and when activating the webcam application, I cannot increase the image size from 160*120.

The image size (i.e. the image of myself that I see when activating the webcam) used to be much larger, but when I select the drop-down resolution menu to see I can enlarge the preview image, the only option I am given is 160*120.

A couple of times before this problem started, when I booted the laptop I got an error message saying that the webcam application couldn't be activated; I have uninstalled and reinstalled the webcam driver, but no luck.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Andy

Answer:Satellite C660D-14W - Webcam Query: Can't Adjust Image Preview Size

Hi

Even if the webcam driver reinstallation didn?t help you, I would still recommend checking this once again.
You should uninstall the webcam software firstly!

Then you should clean the registry because the registry still contains some entries.
You can use the CCleaner? it?s a good software to keep the registry and OS clean.

After that reboot the unit several times and then download the webcam software from the Toshiba page? then install this and reboot the unit.
Now check the webcam functionality!

Note: installed 3rd party software (skype, etc..) might affect the webcam functionality so check the webcam before you would install the software.

Does anyone know how I can add such (sym?)links to other directories on the computer?

This has stumped me so good I actually signed up to a forum... Hey guys..

Long story short.. "Show Libraries" refuses to work in File Explorer

I've done this.. And it doesn't do anything. It doesn't even leave a check or anything.

I've done this.. And while it leaves a check showing it's "working".. It still isn't showing my libraries

I've also done this.. It checks, I hit apply, ok to close the box and nope.. If I re-open the folder options again the box is unchecked.

The only way in File Explorer I can get it to show my libraries is use "Show All Folders".. Which I don't want to do.

The strangest part is.. In the OPEN Dialog (the dialog that opens if you want to browse files to upload to say, imgur).. It works as it should..

I've done a sfc /scannow and it comes out clean.. I have no idea how File Explorer got so corrupt. Windows updates are all current, etc..

Sorry if this has been dealt with before - can't find it on a search.I am using XP with SP1.I want to create a spreadsheet listing the contents of various folders, mainly so I can identify gaps in downloaded series. Explorer gives me all the details I want, but I can't find a way to export all the information so it can be manipulated. So far I can only copy title information on one-by-one basis, and this is restricted to the file name. A Windows update may have changed the options for security or stability reasons. The effect may not have been their direct intention, but a result of 'fixing' something else. I want to make some specific changes to the default Preview Details string for picture files in Windows Explorer. I have found an excellent write-up on how to edit that string using regedit, but the author was only interested in the specific around music. In the attached picture, I show the file properties/attributes that I am interested in placing in the Detail Pane. The current edited string is shown below.

prop:System.Photo.DateTaken;System.Keywords;System.Title;System.Subject;
*System.Photo.PeopleNames;*System.Contact.Location;*System.Contact.StateOrProvince;
*System.Contact.Country;System.Comment;*System.DateCreated;*System.DateModified;
*System.SharedWith

As you can see, some work, others don't. Is there a comprehensive list of these properties and their syntax in the form
(*)System.xxxx.yyy
that one can refer to when modifying the string?

I'm all about equality and symmetry. I like making what's around me look good and consistent.

Is there a program that would let me measure exactly how wide a detail tab is, and that I can adjust the same measurement in a different folder?

So check out the image, for example. I have:
1) Name
2) Dimensions [this folder is primarily intended for images]
3) Size
4) Type
5) Date modified
Yet there's another folder that I also use that is also intended for images. So when I open that next folder, I want those detail tabs to be the same exact width in measurement, yet when I add the "Dimensions" detail, I have to manually adjust the size of the detail tab and try to make all the other tabs as close to how it looks in the other folder, so my eyes can stay on a consistent focus.

I'm sure these's some program out there that can automatically resize these things.

(PS: I'm aware of the setting that I can make a default for folders with images in them.. yet I don't want to do this the default settings for all pictures folders)

Okay thanks.

Why are certain details, such as Frame Height, allowed in Windows Explorer when looking in a specific folder, but are missing when searching the contents of the same folder?

For example, I'm inside a folder (in details view) of video files and ask Explorer to show details of Frame Height. It will show that for certain file types. But when I search for one of the files by name, the Frame Height will be blank for the same file it just showed me the info for.

Hi, folks!

I'm trying hard to find at Internet a program or some way to output the informations from column details in Windows Explorer to a file (or to clipboard), cause I use different columns beside the normal information like filename, size, date, depending of the content of my folders. I.E. For a picture folder, I display dimensions of pics; for a mp3 folder, display bitrate and duration; for a video folder, display bitrate, duration and resolution (when available). I already tried a lot of programs, but none extract the informations the way I want (almost all of them just list the default columns, like filename, size and date) and I need a program that extract the columns exactly the way they are displayed in Windows Explorer. By the way, I'm using Windows XP Pro.

Thanks in advance.

The details for my music files (eg artist, song name etc) has disappeared in Windows Explorer but they show up in Winamp.
I am also unable to edit the file details. They're all mostly .mp3 files

Answer:Music file details disappeared in Windows Explorer

When you open windows explorer check option ?Views? and set it to ?Details? so you should be able to see file name, size, type, artist, Album title, year, track number and duration.
You can open windows media player, go to library and check if you can edit each file listed there.

Hi, I just re-installed windows 7 on my desktop pc and have a question about the settings of the details pane in windows explorer (the one that appears and the bottom when you select a file). Previously when I selected video files (.mp4, .avi and .mkv) I would get the details at the bottom, the video frame width and height, size of file etc.. but since I reinstalled I don't get these details when I select video files. I know its only a small problem but I work with video files a lot and have gotten used to seeing the resolution of files without having to open them. Does anyone know how I can get the details pane to show these details again? At the moment it only displays the video size, name and state.

Here is a screen-shot of the details pane for a selected .mkv video file on my laptop, this is what I want it to display on my pc.

Answer:Solved: Windows explorer details pane for videos problem

Is the folder set as a "Video" type?
Look at the properties of the folder, and there you will see a drop down list for the type.

Hello,

I've searched quite a lot on this subject but have not been able to find a solution.

In Win 8 Windows Explorer, the preview pane seems to be able to display previews of all file types I really use except the type I use most-- eml email files. Is it possible to get the preview pane to show a preview of an eml file?

In searching the web I ran across reference to an old app named PreviewConfig that I believe was written for Vista, but apparently it does not work in Win 8, although I have not tried it-- kind of fear messing something up.

I have noticed that if I simply manually edit an eml file's extension from eml to mht-- it will be displayed in the preview pane.

I have hundreds if not thousands of eml files saved to disk. I really don't want to change all of them to mht because that eliminates email functionality of the file. Meaning, I would not be able to double-click the file, open it and respond to or forward it as an email message.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Answer:Display eml in Explorer Preview Pane

just a thought ,why not do a bit of a split screen with windows explorer and your .eml default email program . might take a little longer to preview each email ,,i use it like this with windows live mail to view my saved emails. like in the attachment , if need it just install windows live mail ,and set it to default for .eml files

I generally use the "details" view in Windows File Explorer a lot. This is an example:

And i tried already in the menu: View > Options > Change folder and search options > View and then unchecked Always show icons, never thumbnails. But it didn't help much.

I did new windows 10 clean install today and not yet installed new updates since there was no space on C: so i startec lean up some stuff and so far i have 93.6 GB free space. Maybe the problem is that i need first to install all the updates ?

I tried now to go drive D and same problem most of the images without preview.

Im running two rigs with 2kpro on them, (a file server and a gaming rig) too many times for me to be happy with when i open a folder and double or single click a video file the little preview pops up on the left side, and crashes explorer, and takes down almost everything with it.

when the window closes it takes any file transfers, media player, and at times the desktop goes blank (black, then no icons, then the icons come back)

if i set the folders for icons only i dont have the problem, but thats not the answer

any ideas, sorry if this doest belong here but im just not sure where to post,

thanks

Answer:file preview crashes explorer

What sort of video file is it? XviD? DivX? etc etc etc

Explorer used to crash on me when I selected a XviD file, but after I reinstalled the XviD codec the problem stopped.

Browsing through my Excel files in File Explorer when I highlight a filename, I noticed that in the left pane, under details, there is a preview of the spreadsheet (I am using WinXP and Office XP). Well, sometimes there is a preview. About 40% donít show a preview. There are two similar files saved on the same day. One shows the preview, the other does not. This preview is kind of a handy feature even if it is inconsistent. Does anyone know what is going on here?

Thanks

Answer:Excel FIle Preview in Explorer

Open a file that does NOT show a preview.
Hit File-Properties.

Is the "save preview picture" checkbox marked?

Warning: This can increase file size.

Try http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm which is a free Xplorer replacement - and is better in other ways as well.

I'll use the explorer preview pane regularly. I have multiple installs of windows 10 on different machines. On one in particular, I cannot get the preview image to resize/scale up when I drag the preview pane to be bigger. The default space it takes is fairly narrow, which is fine if you just want a rough idea. However, sometimes, I need to see the preview image in a bigger size. In most other installs, the default behavior is that dragging the preview pane border to the left makes the pane itself bigger, and the image being displayed inside scales up to fit the space (in almost all cases. Some exceptions). On this particular install, no matter what the size of the preview pane, the source image remains the same size. I can have the preview pane taking up 3/4 of the explorer window, and the preview image will still be the tiny size it was at default. I've seen this on other installs before, but in those cases, it was (oddly) only jpeg images that had this issue. Other formats resized. This has persisted across multiple builds of win 10, so not just a bug in the build (another machine with the same build doesn't have the issue). In fact, I just had the latest build update. Any ideas out there? It's particularly important to me because I have ridiculous amounts of images where there may be what appears to be an identical shot 20+ times at a glance, but with important differences I could tell them apart with if the preview was bigger.

Answer:Explorer Preview pane image will not resize

Here is a screen shot of what I mean. If I drag the preview pane as far right as possible to minimum size, that preview image will be basically exactly the same size

I have enabled the Preview Pane (Organize/Layout/Preview Pane) and the preview pane is displayed.
However, the only preview that is displayed is *.jpg.
Other files such as *.doc, *.docx, *.xls, *.txt and .eml are not displayed.
Any Ideas what is wrong?
Also I understand that there is someway to preview *.pdf
Any help would be much appreciated.

For anyone else who experiences the same problem, the solution is to enable;Tools/Folder Options/Views/Show Preview Handlers in Preview Pane

Hello Everyone,

I don't exactly know the proper name for them, but I am looking for a way to TURN OFF / REMOVE the arrow drop down menus located to the right of each column when in the "details" view. When you click on the arrows they display a drop down menu giving you the option of filtering A-H, I- P, Q-Z which I am sure tons of people have a need for? I don't think so!

I am using the Windows 7 Basic Theme in Windows 7 Pro and as I said I am using the "Details" View.

I know many will brush off finding a fix to this, saying just ignore them, but they really are annoying, every time you go to change the size of a column (which I do quite a bit) when you go to select the line you get a little hiccup where it loads up this arrow menu icon. I compare this to buying a car and having the manufacturer designing the gas and the brake pedal to be butting up against each other, so that every time you go to hit one you are constantly hitting the other.

Others will say, "just pick a 3rd party file explorer", which after testing over 30 (don't get me started on file explorers ),
I have picked one and the best one that I have found that suits my own personal needs so far is QDir. It is a great file explorer and I am so grateful to the developer for creating it, (if you haven't tried it out, give it a shot) the only thing is I believe it uses the identical light blue columns from Windows 7 File Explorer because it has the same exact co... Hello Mike,

I'm not sure that those can be removed.

If you like, you might see if Option Two in the tutorial below may be another way that may work for you to resize the columns.

Hope this helps,

Since updating to win 10 anniversary edition I cannot get a preview of Word documents in File Explorer - all other files show a preview. This is on a Sony Vaio all in one PC with Office 2010. The mystery is that I also have a Vaio laptop running the identical operating system and apps and this does have doc previews. I have tried repairing the Word app and have compared all the settings on each computer but nothing brings back doc previews on the all in one - get the message "this file cannot be previewed". I would like to uninstall / reinstall Office but I do not have a disk and cannot find an official download of the 2010 version for which I have the key. Microsoft support were polite but stumped.

Any suggestions welcome

How to I turn on Thumbnail Preview for my JPEG 's in File Exploere?

Answer:How to turn on Thumbnail Preview in File Explorer

Once you go to your file that contains a collection of photos, just click on the top tab that says "VIEW" and then click on the medium icon, or large icon or extra large icon or what ever size you want. That should work.

I have MPG/MPEG thumbnail preview support in file explorer on Windows 7. But on Windows 10 file explorer there is no thumbnail preview.

Can somebody tell me, is the thumbnail preview I am experiencing on Windows 7 native or did I install an application somewhere along the road to get this functionality?
Does this have anything to do with native DVD playback which is available in Windows 7 having been stripped out of Windows 10?

On to the solution, is this a known bug or something Microsoft is working on? Or is this now the responsibility of a 3rd party software installation?
