Need help solving a MAC address mystery

Question: Need help solving a MAC address mystery

I live in a condo complex where I'm surrounded by wi-fi connections. I have a very rare neurological condition which causes me to have seizures if I am exposed to certain wireless devices. It has nothing to do with the GHz so we think it's related to some other variable like modulation, harmonics, etc. I don't have an expensive spectrum analyzer so I can't measure the variables, but it has only happened when I was exposed to hotspots, not regular wi-fi modems.

A few weeks ago a neighbor's computer started showing a very strong signal related to an ad hoc network and I have had some pretty bad episodes (it's kind of like epilepsy - some people have seizures from flashing lights, I have them from certain radio transmission). I mentioned the situation and he said he had no idea what I was talking about. I gave him a printout showing how to turn off an ad hoc network and that night the signal disappeared (and I finally got some sleep), but then it showed back up the next day again. I need to make my case so that he will make more of an effort to stop the auto setup that's apparently occurring and hoped some of you might be able to help.

I'm attaching a screen shot taken with Acrylic WiFi. The SSDI says SETUP and as you can see, the signal is significantly stronger than anything else around me. The MAC address says unknown when I do vendor searches. It's changed at least twice. Those specs were typical of older MacBooks with 802.11b band. Do any of you know of other devices that might have those same specs? And is there anyway to permanently disable the setup so it doesn't automatically launch? He claims he doesn't have an ad hoc network and apparently doesn't realize what's happening.

I had just renewed my lease, so moving isn't an option. And I can't tear up the carpet to put down shielding, so that's not an option, either. I just need more information so that when I discuss this with him again I can have the details I need to convince him he can do something about it.

Thanks -

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I used to run a Starwars RPG message board http://markmw.proboards44.com I basically let it die a while ago but I went back recently and noticed that for months someone, a guest, has been posting nonsensical messages almost every day, they are all links to chinese websites and all the IP addresses from the guest or guests I have been able to trace all point to China. It's obvious some work was put into this and Im not sure why someone would put that much effort into it whatever it is. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what they think. Go to the link above and look at the general board and you will see what Im talking about. If you want any more detailed info send me a PM. Thank You

I've got a computer that keeps freezing. I've replaced the harddrive, run all the ram through memtest for about 20 hours, replaced the GPU, tried a different power supply, and replaced the thermal paste that connects the CPU with the heatsink. Nothing is overclocked. I've got enough fans.

I just can't figure out what needs to be done. The only things left to be replaced are the mother board and the CPU. Can anyone tell me of a way to test these and make sure they work?

Is there something I could be missing in terms of some other messed element that could be causing the freezing?

Thanks for your time.

Hey guys, I'm having a problem with Windows XP on my file-server. Every few days, it crashes in the middle of the night, between 1:30am and 3:00am. When I wake up in the morning, it is simply unresponsive (the only way it can be accessed however is over the network) and I have to do a hard restart on it. There is no memory dump associated with this crash, and my only hint for the time of crash is checking the Computer Management Application Event Viewer, where the last event is always EventID 101: wuauclt (828) The database engine stopped. This event occurs up to a dozen times a day however without incident, so that may just be coincidence.

So, can you guys help point me in the right direction? What might be causing this? Are there any trouble-shooting tips you guys have?

About the machine, it's an Optiplex GX150 running Windows XP Pro SP2. Standard install, pretty much, except it has four hard drives and power management is set to spin them down after only five minutes of inactivity (to lower temps).

When your laptop does not connect to network (trying acquiring network address unsuccessfully), then it is very likely that the winsock has been corrupted. Go to start/run, type cmd, you then have to get to the c prompt, type "netsh winsock reset", restart the computer, and it should work...hope it will cure your problem as it did for mine...note that this issue happened right after having installed an automatic update for win XP.... netsh winsock reset is useful command that you can use in Microsoft Windows to reset winsock catalog back to default setting or clean state. You can try this if you are having following Internet access or networking problems but still failing to resolve the problem after trying all other suggestions.

Hello,

I would like your help on how to solve the issue with my Vista desktop. When online, it was freezing, and I then turned it off because it won't allow me to shut off using the Start button. I then turned it on, and the statement appeared on the black screen.

Setting has failed to POST.
System is using default settings for this POST attempt.
Press F1 to continue.
Press F2 to enter SETUP to adjust OC/OV settings.

I pressed F1 and it came on with no problem. But, it continues doing that kind of statement after turned it off for a day. It won't disappear because it looks like I need to press F2 to solve it. Please direct me to some sites or others for this kind of issue. If I need to press F2, what will happen and what do I do with it?

Thanks.

Answer:Need your help on solving the issue, please

Hello chimp78,
Press F2 to enter setup and set the Bios to default, normally F5.
Reboot and see if it is fixed.
As for the lockups on-line, is it when you are using IE, if so, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced, and press the reset button, this will set IE to default settings, the chances are that it is an add-on causing the lockups.
Make sure they are all disabled, Tools > Manage add-ons.
Hope this helps, good luck and post your results.

If 2 separate... bypass the router and plug directly with ethernet into the modem and see if he still has issues.

Ok, I opened up my presents for christmas, and omg, its the game I have always wanted, dungeon siege 2, and the expansion. I install it just fine, everything is going awesome, I'm meeting all of the system requirements, and then when I start it, the screen goes black and flickers for about 30 seconds, then a error messages pops up and says "Video Intilization failure". I look up information, and the only thing I can find is that, that error is only supposed to happen if you have Laplink installed and your comp, and I don't. I went into the DxDiag, and tested my directX. I have dirextx9. I tested the direct draw, works like a dream, but when I get to the direct3D, the tests fails, and all of them fail at step 8. This right here would be the problem, but NO idea what to do. Help me please!

You need to download the catalyst 6.1 driver from here - http://www.techpowerup.com/softmod/downloads.php then remove your current driver via device manager then reboot your pc and install the new driver.
That will hopefully fix your problem.

Question: Solving the Riddle

In my never ending quest to comprehend most/all hardware
problems, I pulled the sound card and modem and holy bologna,
the BSOD at shutdown went away. Very interesting.
So lets now readd sound card and see what happens, but sound
card and modem to come are ' out of alignment ', mobo not
right, neither card has been ' fully in place ' for how long?
A year maybe? Could this be the cause for BSOD at shutdown?
Because when stuck sound card back in, the BSOD came back.
Questions are many and experiments continue, but I would like to know if 1) ? bios may be problem, i.e. does the bios keep
past driver info, like sound card from last year, an isa stored?
Does it store all driver info? Is the only way to erase that
info A FLASH? Can one flash/reprogramm in midformat ?

Secondly, does moving modem to sound card psi slot
do anything substantial? Sound card to modem slot
or to one unsued?

Mobo align problem solved and all cards are as they
should be. Will this make any difference???
Other than BSOD at shutdown ( unless I dial up, 56k
then I NEVER get BSOD ), this pc is a honey. No quirks.
98se with shutdown patch as of friday. Gigabyte 5ax board.
I don't mind reformatting again ( well maybe ), but I really
want to get hardware/bios issues, if any, resolved first.

Any suggestions would be of great help..
- M

Answer:Solving the Riddle

Well, I don't understand half of your questions and statements - you may want to consider using some proper grammar- but since no else has responsed - here it goes.

Shutdown problems are quite common with Windows 98, especially with older motherboards/systems.

Here's a few quick/common causes:
1). A shutdown sound - disable it in Control Panel/Sounds
2). An Antivirus scan set to scan floppies at shutdown - disable this small feature in you're antivirus program.
3). A virus or Spyware/adware - use an online virus scan and Adaware and Spybot to remove any/all problems they find.
4). Windows 98 problems - there are at least 2 patches for 98 which you can get by running Windows Update. The is also a WDM sound patch as well. I would recommend that you have all critical and most program patches installed.
5). A bios/IRQ/Hardware problem - you can update the BIOS, turning on or off ACPI in the BIOS, changing the slots the soundcard and modem are installed in, and update all drivers. This includes motherboard chipset/ide drivers, soundcard drivers, modem drivers, video drivers, etc.
6). Something else - like a program running in the background, corrupt files, faulty or incompatible parts.

The BIOS is its own very basic drivers in a sense, but it has nothing to do with the drivers loaded in Windows - it does not store any drivers you install in Windows.

Question: Problem solving

Hi,All

Since I retired from music I have taken an interest in computers as well as software(having beta-tested a number of them).

Looking on the internet there are millions of people with as many problems with their computers;e.g.my system restore won't work etc.

I have been very pleased in having run into a plethora of problems, and have been able to solve each one of them.If anyone has a problem that I can help with, please let me know.

Here's one:My system restore doesn't work but keeps on creating restore points even when I turn it off.It never deletes any of the points,as a message advises me "no more disc space".

1.Turn off your System Restore.

2.Get either a program called "Farstone" or "Komodo" - They always work.

And another: My Windows Explorer has encountered a problem.....

Turn the blasted thing off, and get a freeware program called "Explorer XP"

For me,it has never had a problem, and, unlike the Windows version,it will show you a folder in your C: Drive called "System Volume Information"
This folder, when opened, will show you every one of your restore points as -
RP.1,RP2,RP3,etc.Get a good freeware Shredder, and get rid of the lot,as the other restoration programs that I mentioned create their own restore points.

p.s.When you use the shredder,it will never shred a System file,or a file "in use" if you use Explorer XP.

I hope these few suggestions will help s... Read more

Answer:Problem solving

first, try to get some free space by using Run->cleanmgr

this will find and ask permission to delete tons of temp files and do so without using the
Recycle Bin.

this should allow some other options to be successful, like disabling System Restore Points.
It SRP can be disabled, then the second ton of free space will appear.
HIGHLY recommend you immediately reenable it with a reduced size, say 5GB.

Hi,

I am currently very stressed up.
I do not over clock.
I have not recently installed any new hardware.
A few weeks ago my computer began to restart at random moments. I read the memory dumps which quoted memory_corruption around 50% of the time. The rest of the time it quoted random software.

I ran Memtest for 16 hours with no errors.
I ran the computer on each stick individually and still got the crashes/restarts.
I also deleted my virtual RAM etc.

At times the computer would just freeze.

I turned off automatic restart and got the BSoD. This was also gave random errors, I had IRQ_NOT_LESS blah blah and STOP: c000021a and other stop codes I no longer have.
Event logger gave no usful info.

The situation got worse until at cirtain times, the computer would start up, restart and startup, restart five times before I could use it. Sometimes before my windows welcome screen had departed my sight.

At this point, I reformatted the computer.
With no success.
However the crashes have become less frequent.

So I guess it's now a hardware problem.

So I ran PRIME95 and got an error almost instantly on all the torture tests:

FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4

After scouring forums for I don't know how long, I came to the conclusion that noone knows what this means.
However I followed a few suggestions (I think I did - I am a BIOS noob).

I decreased the DRAM clock from 133mhz to 100mhz and increased the

Answer:You Think You Know Computers... Try Solving This...

i would work backwards on this one man.. i would first off take everything off of the mother board except memory and cpu and hdd of course and run it that way to see if you get the same reboot problem.. then i would try the memory in that system in another to see if you get any problems with the memory in another system... always try known good components when it becomes a hardware issue...that is why i keep backups of all components. after you have tested just the mother board memory and hdd then start putting stuff back in one at a time till you see the problem again..Right now i am thinking memory or motherboard for sure.. also try the hard drive in this system in another and see if that shows any signs of failure.. good luck man

Hello Everyone!

I've been browsing around and found this site to be an incredible resource! I haven't asked for help yet, but I think it's time!

I have an affiliate site where I can place an image on the header along with my name (It's my PowerCogs site with Cognigen ... I guess I can say that)

I placed the URL to numerous images that I have on-line through my account with Yahoo's File Manager. It's not an FTP, but you can store images. I then tried to see the results and keep seeing a red X. I finally used a Patriotic Ribbon that is offered free for using anywhere through my ISP, earthlink. However, I need to find a way to get the images I want on my affiliate site as soon as possible. Any ideas? As an example, below is one of the images I tried to add to my site's header (it meets the size criteria) see if anyone can find a problem with this link, or is it a configuration of my system? If so, please tell me because those Red X's are a pain!
Click Here to see the image... here is the same link in long form to see: http://www.geocities.com/freedomwatchdogs/freedomwatchdog.gif It appears like a good link huh?

I appreciate any help I can get!

Thanks to all of you and continued success!

Then and error message saying "This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package"

can you guys solve this problem please

Answer:solving patches

Hi, welcome to the board.
What have you installed previous to getting these problems?
It looks like you did something, Without knowing what has been done right before you starting getting the prompt for the installer, even our magic wands won't be able to solve it.
Did you test a registry cleaner? Where you prompted to scan your PC for free (Internet malware)?
Did you do your own 'cleaning up' for obsolete or unsed data?
There is always something that was done.

To fix your problem, I would suggest you reenable all those services that you disabled before and reboot the system.

Hi all,

Trying to fix an issue with my friend's laptop...

Originally there seemed to be loads of viruses and I tried removing it by installing microsoft's security essentials and microsoft defender. It seemed to remove a lot... Then also ran combofix and it removed some more. But since the issue didnt get resolved, I formatted and reinstalled Windows XP on the comp. But it appears that there is still some sorta virus coz I cannot open regedit or task manager, I get the message 'Disabled by administrator', even though I am logged in as admin and there are no other login user accounts on the OS. Any windows settings changed get automatically reverted back to original. For instance, I changed the folder settings to show hidden folders in Windows explorer, but seconds later its gone.

I have tried reinstalling the OS a few times now...Still not resolved...

Please help!!!

It will blue screen even when it is clocked back down to an XP2500. I never had a single stabililty problem with this setup. How can I check what it is?

Answer:Help solving BSOD...

Did you check out the sticky at the top? http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=968407

On the BSOD there should be a file name near the top. That should point you in the right direction as to what caused it.

Hi guys,
I've been trying everything to solved a friggin error when I clicked to open a YouTube video, it says: "Error occurred, please try again later". By the way, my browser is Google Chrome.*Here's what I tried:

1. I tried to Change video quality to a lower quality setting like 240p or 360p, and tried to run the video again!

2. I made sure I had the latest version of Chrome browser.

3. I Updated my Flash Player thinking it would work. My FP Version Is: 21,0,0,182

4. I was told to try to disable JavaScript and Re-enable it but it didn't work either.

5. I Cleared my Cookies and cache.

6. I Checked my extension.

With all of this done, I still could not fix it so do you have a suggestion?

Thanks

Yannik

Did you try a different browser?

Maybe the YouTube server was simply having problems - 'try again later'

A friend of mine (a mail carrier) had a computer given to him by a customer (Doctor). As my friend (John) put it, this customer has more money then patience (not patients :-D ). The Doctor had been having problems with it and just gave it to John and bought another one. John has very little experience with computers and so I told hime to bring it over and I'd take a look at it.

Here's the stats on it:
Gateway GT5644E desktop computer
Athlon 64 X2 5000+ cpu (2.6GHz)
Windows Vista
2000 MHz system bus
Chipset Nvidia Geforce 6150SE
3 gig DDR2 memory (677 MHz)
Hard Drive 400 GB SATA
DVD
Media Card Reader 15-in-1 high speed digital media manager
Geforce 8300GS

Instead of coming with disks it uses HD partition to hold the software/os, so I reinstalled the OS (and all the extra crap that gateway puts on the computer that John doesn't need).
Then I loaded CODWAW on it and tried it out with no problems. Even thougbh it would still freeze on boot up at times. Last night when he tried to get online and play the computer would freeze.

I used memtest and that worked with no problems. But now, whats the best way to proceed to find the problem. Are there any programs that can help?

Answer:How to go about computer problem solving

Hmm, remove all peripherals and try to boot again, plus all interior boards besides the video card, reboot and see which one shafts you as you reinstall them..

I just got a new desktop yesterday. It is a computer from CyberPowerPC with Windows 8 64-bit. I have been unable to connect to the wireless at all, however I can connect to the internet with an ethernet cable.

I have reinstalled my network card drivers, the network card is a RealTek PCie GBE Family Controller.

In my computer settings menu, I do not have a "Wireless" menu listed.

I have checked in my device manager to ensure that my card is on.

There are no duplicate hidden devices in the device manager.

In Network and Internet > Network Connections it only shows an ethernet adapter.

I know there are several threads on this but I have been unable to find a working answer in any of these threads. I have been searching for an answer for something like seven hours, I would really appreciate it if someone could help.

The results of ipconfig /all are usually asked for, so here they are:

My laptop has a really horrible virus!! It turned  itself off during the night and when it restarted this morning it looked as though it was it safe mode and I tried to system restore but it came up with an error message saying "system restore has been turned off by group policy please contact the domain administrator to turn on system restore" I tried the registry thing and it gave me a similar error message, it was also producing the rundle.exe or whatever it's called and when I tried to restart it again in safe mode it has now completely locked me out, my profile won't come up in the log in screen and instead it comes up with "other user" and asks for a password and a log in name and of course there is no other user but myself, I tried googling this but it's a problem no one else seems to have had, I tried running it in every single mode and it just does the same thing, bringing up the multi boot menu only gives two options, launch computer repair or start windows normally and no matter what mode I run it in I get the same problem and can't get past the log in screen so I can't run any anti virus software and activate system restore, someone suggested I wipe my computer and lose my hard drive and install a new operating system but I don't know how to do this, does anyone know how to fix this?!?

Answer:I seem to have a problem I can't come across solving online! Can anyone help!!

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer. 1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear. If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line. *********************************************What OS do you have on that computer? Do you have the OS disk(s)?

I just wanted to thanks the person or persons who posted the fixed for the missing icons on Windows XP. Just deleting two files did the trick but knowing to do this was the key.
"Just to let everyone know.... While surfing through the internet I found someone who solved this problem and has a way to fix it. There are 2 registry keys in the registry that are causing the problem. It affects the explorer.exe and iexplorer.exe files.

This is the key that needs to be deleted...

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplorer.exe

Once these keys are deleted the desktop and internet explorer should come back to life.

Thank you whoever found this information and I hope this will be a benefit to someone else out there."

Thanks again.

Answer:Solving the missing icons

To anyone reading this, as a visitor to the site - CAUTION is advised.
It may be something as simple as right click the desktop AND then on "Arrange Icons By" click Show Desktop Icons. As per this link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;330170&Product=winxp

The cause of missing Icons may be other reasons.
Whilst I am NOT suggesting the post is WRONG
DO NOT delete registry keys until you are advised.
It may be absolutely nothing to do with the registry

Hello there, folks.

I'm rather new here (obviously, I suppose) and new to the game somewhat as well.

Here's the deal:

-I have a rather large document of contacts for my company. They're in a format that won't load into ACT! because they are not in their own, seperate columns.

I'm rather new at ACT!, but Excel is pretty friendly for me. I don't know very much, if any, valuable 'coding' methods and the like for Excel, but I manage just fine usually.

Still, this problem is greatly irritating me. The excel document currently has each contact in a block of something like A1:A5-D15, where instead each should be their own seperate column (i.e A1-A20, ideally)

Any help or hints/tricks at how to do this in the most expedient (sp?) manner?

I would just manually do it but I have between 20,000 and upwards of 30,000 possible contacts to transcribe into a viable code format to bring into ACT!, our CRM program...>.>
Sincerely,

A very confused computer-lover named CJ

I posted about BSOD problems last week. I traced these to problems with the AMD video driver "atikmpag.sys", which I couldn't Google up any solutions for. The card vendor, XFX, supplied the file below, which gives detailed instructions about how to wipe all AMD drivers from your system so you can do a really clean install of an updated driver. I did this 3 days ago and so far I haven't had any further problems. (fingers crossed hard) Maybe this will help someone else who's struggling with AMD driver issues. ( if the link doesn't work then navigate to the file from the root...the file is there but initially I got a "File not found" message when I tried to paste the entire link.)

http://xfxstorage.com/Support/ATI-Dr...leshooting.pdf

David

The link is being truncated when posted. After the Support/ it should read....ATI-driver-installation-troubleshooting.pdf.

Answer:Solving AMD driver problems

Thanks for the report David, your original topic was one of the problems we didn't get around to helping with

The link to the pdf works fine for me, the Driver Sweeper link inside it is no longer working, I use one of the [email protected] links from |MG| Driver Sweeper 3.2.0 Download to download it.

The origins for these crashes can be very difficult to pin down and fix, I'm glad the XFX procedure worked for you.

nVidia cards have similar problems, here are 2 links (most of the generic troubleshooting steps are the same for both AMD/ATI and nVidia):
NVIDIA Statement on TDR Errors - NVIDIA Forums
The nvlddmkm error - What is it? - NVIDIA Forums
(I've been unable to find the 'old' AMD/ATI faq on it recently)

I'm having code 34 every time i restart my system, in device manager - display adapter, it shows both my cards name (GTX 970) with the yellow triangle - error 43. The strangest thing is all i needed to do was disabling both my cards in device manager and then enable again and it worked again, no error until the next restart ....I have a work-around but it would be great to solve this.
Stuffs I have done:

Uninstalled the cards in Device Manager (with and also without DDU) inside+outside of Safemode and installed the driver againUpdated mainboard bios versionDrivers tried: 368.69, 368.81
My setup: SLI GTX 970. 3 monitors (not in surround) - main connected via DP, others 2 DVI. Current driver version: 368.81. Win 10 Pro 64bit. I was also running this setup fine on win 8.1, this only happens in win 10 (clean install)

Thanks in advance

Hi everybody.
I'm going crazy because I can not understand what's going on.
I noticed that the Norton Antivirus 2004 Auto protect was disabled and the Blackice firewall was also disabled. I tried some tasks ...
When I try to enable auto protect or firewall the program stop to respond to the mopuse click on the status bar.
The system hung up when I shut down Windows and does not go off (you see the standard msg "I'm updating the configuration files" in Italian - or something like that): I have to manually switch off.
I scanned the system with installed norton (the scan still works), with Symantec on-line scan, with TrojanHunter, with Spybot, with McAfee Stinger and found nothing.

I noticed that the system icon didn't work so I started the safe mode (F8) and disabled the system recovery mode. The system in safe mode shut down normally. After having disabled system recovery the icon appears in normal mode but hangs up when I access to the update section.

When I close and reopen the firewall, the following msg appears: "the blackice service is pausing to allow for system recovery".

Another odd thing: I can not uninstall Norton and can nto upgrade Blackice, but i can update virus definition with intelligent updater.

Here is my hijackthis log:

Hello,
A) I am looking for a software that allows you to retrieve deleted emails, and other computer files. Does anyone have a good suggestion?

B) I am looking for a way to duplicate all my programmes, files, software etc, including Outlook emails and email settings, onto a small 40 gig portable hard drive. In this way, when some idiot steals my laptop, next time, I will have a fully backed up system to install in my new laptop. Hopefully at the click of one button marked "lazy".

I looked at backing up on an internet storage service, but it looks pretty dangerous nowadays with all the crooks stealing information and identities left and right. Any recommendations?

I found I have taskswitch.exe running when I installed Enuff.exe program for time control for children in families. What problem I am encountering is the two are duking it out over the Alt-Tab usage. Enuff ties up all the navigation mouse and keystrokes until the user logs into the time to start the clock and control software. Then all are restored to previous settings. UNfortunately the PowerToy taskswitch.exe wants to reprogram the Alt-Tab key for its use and Enuff has it in its possession so it fails.

Is there a way to have taskswitch.exe run AFTER a program has passed on from a user input (or completed a phase). I searched here and found only three topics with taskswitch.exe in them and all were text outputs from someone's paste in from HijackThis!. So I found NO discussion on that process other than what I found that told me it was part of PowerToys. I looked into power toys to see if I could selectively turn off the taskswitch.exe but I was not able to find anything useful. One way or other I would like to eliminate the error.

So this problem started a few months ago when I tried playing a PC game on my computer. All of a sudden, one of the fans inside the PC starting going CRAZY. Like, REALLY loud. I turned off the game, and everything went back to normal. no noise. I tried it again when Elder Scrolls Online came out, and the fan is going insane again. I turn the game off and I get no noise.

I'm fairly certain it's my graphics card that is making the noise, but I also wanted to be safe and reapply thermal paste to my cpu fan just to make sure. Is there any way to quiet down the graphics card so I can play my games in peace and quiet? Or is this something I'm going to have to live with?

Answer:Need help solving loud fan issue

Do you have fans blowing into and out of your case? More air circulation means that the GPU fan has to work less hard to keep the GPU cooler.

Mystery 1 - why my computer keeps resetting
Mystery 2 - why my computer wouldn't turn on with new PSU (twice)

Here's the story:
Last August I upgraded my GPU. I realized my existing MOBO wasn't compatible after the fact so I upgraded that too (rookie mistake). Shortly thereafter my PSU seemed to be going out as the computer would just randomly reset and turn back on, which made sense with the upgrades I was making, so I upgraded that too.

Well, then I updated from Win 8.1 to Win 10 and the computer started resetting again. I was convinced it was Win 10, so I did a clean wipe of my main OS drive and reverted back to Win 8.1

It was a good couple months, so I decided to upgrade to Win 10. Again, few days later it started to reset again, sometimes twice a night when I'm playing a computer game, or every couple days when I'm at work. So I reverted back to Win 8.1.

Then it reset even while running Win 8.1 while playing a computer game (Empyrion: Galactice Survival)! I figured it could be the old power strip it was plugged into, so I unplugged it from that it plugged it in directly to wall. It still reset the next day.

So I ordered a new PSU, a CORSAIR RMx RM850X 850W ATX12V / EPS12V 80 PLUS GOLD. But my computer wouldn't turn on when I fired it up but it would with the existing PSU. I assumed it was a bad unit, so I ordered another. It came today and it too didn't work when I installed it.

What am I missing??? Any help will do.

Okay, I know this problem plagues everyone, especially those more with a laptop due to the lack of airflow space. Previously I had believed that the cause was a game that I played called RuneScape. However, after I started getting all the necessary Windows Vista Updates done, I started to have the overheating problems again. Can updates cause overheating problems at all?

I had gone to factory defaults cause of a Nvidia Driver Problem (have not seen this problem at all once that was done and haven't updated to current driver cause of it). My first computor has had my son and I attacking it for the last 2 years. It is using Windows 98se and I have Nortons Utilities running on it. I seem to have a few problems and it isnt running as smooth as it was, and my son informs me that it is now running in safe mode since he had problems watching a DVD the other night. The picture quality seems to have got a lot worse ie the screensaver seems to be very bitty. Is there any software I can buy to check it out and rectify any problems or shall I take it to PC world where they service PC's to see if they would sort it out. Personally the thought of letting PC world play with it doesnt fill me with great hope.I look forward to getting advice from you thanks.

Answer:Problem solving help required

There is sure to be someone in your neighbourhood that would look at it for you. Ask around. The last place I would take a machine is to PCW, not least because of the fees they charge (there are other reasons of which you seem to be aware).Brian

Greetings. I am having issues with my computer. The problem is it gets super slow almost freezes then catches up rapidly. Loading web pages is slower, youtube is laggy. When I play world of warcraft it really shows as it won't load things until 30 second at arriving at a location. How ever I still see text and can send texts in game. How ever I can play Battlefield 3 with almost no problems.

I am a novice/intermediate skilled PC person. I built my computer on my own and have not had any issues until today 4 months after building it. I constantly update my drivers.

here are my specs.
Windows 7 home premium 64-bit
Ms-7673
intel(r) core(TM) i7-2600k CPU @ 3.40GHZ (8CPUs), ~3.4GHz
4096MB RAM
GEFORCE GTX11 550-i PNY
Directx 11

The only thing I can think of is it is overheating, but why would it do it now?

Hey there, need some help fixing my BSOD issue on my Dell Inspiron 1564 laptop. I've had this problem for a few months now and it's getting pretty irritating. I'm almost certain it's down to a corrupted driver/s (since the blue screen describes a BUG_CODE_USB_DRIVER) but I'm no expert so was looking for some sound advice in what the problem actually is and what can be done to fix it. I've also attached the the necessary files as instructed.

cheers

You can't download that file. It is part of the registry and is unique to your machine. Google that pathname and you will find a lot of hit describing possible ways to recover from that problem. Here is one to start with: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

svchost.exe keeps throwing "unhandled win32 exception" errors
Recently I've been bombarded with Visual Studio JIT Debugger popup
error messages for no apparent reason. The messages generally read
something like:

"An unhandled win32 exception occurred in svchost.exe [xxx].
Just-In-Time debugging this exeption failed with the following error:
No installed debugger has Just-In-Time debugging enabled. In Visual
Studio...."

where "xxx" are usually 952 or 948 or similar.

Now if I enable JIT in VS.NET I'll be getting standalone windows
instead asking me if I want to debug with VS. In both cases (JIT
enabled or not) if I click on "OK" or "Yes/No" 2 things will happen:

1. my wireless modem will be killed and cannot be detected anymore,
meaning no more internet
2. same story with my audio - play movie and got no sound, and TV
capture program crashes because it can't detect audio etc.

Both of the problems above can be "solved" with a reboot.

Now I've since learned to leave those popups alone and move them out of
the screen and pretend them don't exist. That way I still get to play
with my internet and listen to music. Unfortunately since these
messages will come up on average every 5~10 minutes or so before long
you'll see 50~100 different instances of "vsjitdebugger.exe" in the
task manager, each taking up 100k to 3000k of memory, and the system
will become unbearably slow that I&... Read more

Well first of all this is my first time posting to this forum. So I hope I did everything correctly and didn't leave anything out.

I guess this all started when my subscription to Norton was about to run out. I dicided to change over to AVG and ZoneAlarm since I know several people using then with good luck. Hey its cheaper than paying money to Norton.

Atfer reading several posting in this forum I thought it would be a good idea to run thought the READ & RUN ME FIRST thread and see if Norton had let me down.

So here's the results of my scans:
- CCleaner ran successfully and freed up about 130MB.
- AD-Aware SE run successfully nothing found other than a previous version installed which I uninstalled and than installed the current version.
- Spybot Serach & Destory fixed 4 items.
- Windows Defender ran successfully nothing found.
- Bitdefender see attached
- Panda see attached ( identified KillApp.b)
- Hijack see attached

So now I'm looking for some help to clean up the KillApp.B if that is really a issue and to review the HJT file. Now I know after looking at the HJT file and refering to the HTJ tutorial theres a few items in it that need to be cleaned up.

Now I have a new issue after running all of these scans. My IE home page is stuck on:
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
and it will not let me change it. Now before some one asks I tried the Rest Web Setting under Internet options but I ... Read more

Answer:Need some help solving a couple issues.

If you or as you have a HP/Compaq PC then you dont want to remove C:\hp\bin\KillIt.exe a known false positibve for KillApp.B, especially as its located in the place I highlighted in bold, its a comand line program for terminating applications, used in HP recovery process.

as for the browser home page change, disable Spybot S&D and Zonealarm and try to change homepage?

You also seem to have Norton Internet Security on your PC as well as AVG and Zonealarm, they will interfear with each other, do please uninstall either NIS or AVG & ZoneAlarm

A few months ago I built my new computer and installed Windows 7 Pro. I've been getting random BSODs from time to time, and they tend to happen when I push the sleep button on my keyboard to come out of sleep mode. When it does this, it never wakes up. It'll take a dump before the windows screen comes up. Another time it happened just after I came out of sleep and got back into Windows. The first thing I did was open my browser (firefox) so I'd say it took less than 30 seconds after waking when I got the BSOD.

It never happens while the computer is up, or if I'm working on something. So, I don't know if its hardware or windows related. After it happens, windows says it created a log file but I've tried to read it and it doesn't make any sense. Oh, and usually when I put the computer into sleep mode I don't leave programs open that are using RAM. I usually close everything.

I don't know where to start with this. It is random and does not happen every day.

I never played RuneScape till yesterday in order to find out if the problem was something else and my computer had shutdown cause of the overheating problem. Hello: For the past week I have been battling an "unspecified error" (766f6c756d652e63 3f1) in trying to run CHKDSK to help me clear various problems with my system's operation. I was getting many error windows informing me of what program or files were corrupted. These windows appeared at the lower right corner of the screen for about 10 seconds and either disappeared or another window would appear at various times. I ran my usual tests of CCleaner, Malwarebytes, Auslogic Defrag, Avast at full scan, sfc /scannow, and CHKDSK in regular mode and Safe Mode. CHKDSK would not work because of the "unspecified" error mentioned above. The error message is as follows: A disk check has been scheduled. Windows will now check the disk. Since windows 10 was released i've experienced this issue. I have no issues with windows 7, so that i have tried.
I've tried fresh install with no added drivers, i've tried using the windows 7 realtek driver and all other things suggested by MS like /sfc, clean boot, safe mode, scan for malware etc.

My system is running stock, it was overclocked and someone suggested that, that might be the cause, but it doesn't matter if it's oc'd or not. Same issue.

This is what latencymon looks like.
This is WPR where there was a stutter within 15 secs of the end.
And i've added a complete WPR where there's stutter happening in. I don't really know what to do, so far the only option i see is skipping windows 10 and go back to windows 7.

Hi

Not sure where to put this.. after 2 years I got around to fixing my lenovo 575 laptop and fitted a new keyboard earlier this month and also did a restore to factory default which went swimmingly, I thought why not give win10 preview a go and that too went smoothly and overall was impressed with what I was seeing, then I read about roll back and thought give that a go to see if any problems occur.

They did.. now my recovery partition is no more and have tried with partition wizzard which went a bit over my head and my win 7 system would not install programmes like skype as files are missing.

My win7 came preloaded with the laptop and when i used a product key finder it came up with ** REMOVED ** which windows software recovery refused to accept and which is entirely different to the number on the bottom of my laptop which was also rejected.

My dilemma is this... do I buy a fresh copy of win7 knowing that support ends in 5 years or so and my product will not be supported? there are "cheap" win7 home editions on amazon that have product keys but will they be accepted on a computer loaded this year? was surprised to be told that my product key was blacklisted by the microsoft rep and it seems lenovo do this with mass produced machines..

upgrading back to 10 was easy, but still cannot install skype due to missing files.. its not important as this is a "play" computer... I never backed my system up before upgrading as I THOUGHT i had recovery disks w... Read more

OK, here's my biggest issue right now. I'm hoping someone can assist me.

I am having issues with random automatic reboots of my machine. My first thought was that it was potentially a power supply issue, so I replaced my 450 watt supply with a 580 watt supply (unfortunately I do not recall manufacturer of either at the moment, I'm sorry). That didn't solve the issue. I pulled out my IEEE 1394 card, as I'm not currently using it, as well as a bracket card that came with my motherboard that provided a TV-out, as my video card also has a TV out. Still no better. I can go 4 or 5 days without a reboot, then have reboots within 18 hours of each other.

One would then think that the obvious culprit would be a memory issue...and I thought/think that as well. I ran a memory tester overnight, and when I got up this morning, it showed no errors after 7 passes. I'm honestly stumped. The reboots began concurrent with upgrading RAM, and I was certain that the memory tester would turn up something overnight. I've also cleaned out the heatsink and fan for the processor and reapplied fresh heatsink compound; my processor runs, at it's hottest, at 36 Celsius.

I have a mess of minidump files if anyone can parse them...I tried last night, and I simply can't make heads or tails of what the Windows tools are telling me. I can attach them as a zip archive immediately on request.

Here's my system hardware; my PC is more a media ... Read more

Answer:Help solving random/intermittent reboots

Hi,

If you could post 3 or 4 minidumps, they might help.

Did you try reverting to your previous RAM configuration ?

That would be a good troubleshooting idea.

Currently I am using HP Z420 workstation ( Xeon, 4 core, 4 GB RAM) and typical CPU usage of a heavily multithreaded application goes to 95%. I want to upgrade to i7 with 8GB RAMand expecting the CPU usage to go down to 85%. Please advise me if I am in the right direction or any other cost effective solution to the problem. Thanks.

Answer:Solving high CPU usage issue

Hi, 1. There is a list of CPU's supported on the following link:      http://www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/getpdf.aspx/c04111039.pdf?ver=21 2. HDD: You don't have much choice because it uses very high speed HDD's. You need to order the right part as shown on pages 9 & 10. Regards.

every time i try to make this post my computer restarts, so i hope i can quickly type this out. recently my computer has been restarting and the error reports from microsoft have been various, however most of the time it reports its a driver related issue. the links on microsofts error report pages seem to advanced for me. is there any way to trouble shoot. i have no idea how to update drivers nor do i know where to find them. i do however know exactly what i did to my system in and around a 48hour period when these automatic starts begun... in this 48 hour period i did infact install alot of different software, including virus scans, hijack tools, zone alarm, creative software(sound card external) and reinstall some spyware tools aswell as an update from windows. so in some way i am lost as to where to begin. i hope this doesn't reboot or i will just have to go make a post at a cafe... i am using windows xp pro and an acer ferrari 3200, amd 64 mobile 2800, radeon 9700... what do you suggest and how can i make sure i am using the newest drivers for my notebook. also how to i install new drivers... cheers...

z

Answer:if you are good try solving this.....computer keeps restarting

since your using a notebook, have a look in power management for anything obvious. (try setting the profile to always on)

also check the battery alarm settings and actions
(try de-activating the low and critical alarms)

and under the advanced tab, try setting the action when lid is closed to 'do nothing'

try these one at a time.

any help?

also try removing the battery, and use mains power only.

if of these solve your problem, let me know which and we can try and find a long term sollution.

First post so go easy on me...

Two months ago, I built my folks a computer using parts from Newegg.

Here are the specs and then I'll give you the problem it's having....

VIDEO CARD: APOLLO nVIDIA GeForce4 MX440-8X Video Card, 64MB DDR, 128-bit, TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "Bloody Monster Geforce4 MX440 64MB-AGP8X"

MOUSE: LOGITECH|SBF69 OPTICAL WHEEL PS/2

CD-RW: ROSEWILL C523216

OPERATING SYSTEM: WINDOWS XP PRO SP1

This is just a basic pc I set up for my folks, nothing fancy..just better than the 4 year old pc it replaced.

While setting it up I noticed that the display sort of flicker quickly on and off but didn't think much of it.

Well since then I've set it up at their house (which is 2 hours away) and they have called saying that every once in a while, (think 4 times it has happened) the display will just go off.

When this happens, the power and hard drive lights are still on the CPU, but the monitor light goes out like it's powered down.

Turning the monitor on and off won't switch it back on, Ctl-Alt-Delete or any key combinations won't make it come... Read more

[tsg=welcome] Welcome to TSG! [/tsg]

I had a similar problem, and in my case it was the switch on the monitor. However, I feel that this is unlikely in your case. I would sooner suspect a loose connection where the monitor cable plugs into the video card, or possibly the card itself not being properly seated in its slot...

I've tried disable and enable hpet in both bios and system.
I've tried disabling c6, c7 and c7s. Nothing seems to be working. Right now my highest reported DPC routine is ndis.sys at 141212 microseconds.

My system is running stock, it was overclocked and someone suggested that, that might be the cause, but it doesn't matter if it's oc'd or not. Same issue.

This is what latencymon looks like.
This is WPR where there was a stutter within 15 secs of the end.
And i've tried adding a complete WPR where there's stutter happening in, but the upload thingie doesn't seem to like it. I don't really know what to do, so far the only option i see is skipping windows 10 and go back to windows 7 or 8.1.

Answer:ndis.sys windows 10 stuttering, need help solving this.

There is an option to create a homegroup for file sharing between computers but both computers, when this process has been tried, get messages saying unable to create a homegroup on this computer. I need to be able to share between computers for school and work. I've searched and I've tried everything. Thank you in advance!

Answer:Windows 10 solving homegroup issue

Windows XP Home updated with Service Pack 2. Samsung CD Writer 52x worked fine earlier to installing SP 2;  but now the Light blinks for a while on the writer but does not detect the blank CDR media. Help sort out the reasons. Is it dirt on laser or the culprit is SP2 ?

Answer:Detecting and solving Problems with CD Writers

Try reinstalling the driver for the CD-RW drive using the CD that came with the device, or download the correct Windows XP driver for the CD-RW drive from the Samsung Web site.

Hi guys, I was just wondering anybody knows if MS is likely to do anything about the Event ID 41/Kernel Power/Task Category 63 issue that is causing my Win 7 Pro 64 bit to crash randomly, and by the look of it thousands more.

After many years with not a single XP crash, I moved to Win7 x 64 on my new PC late last year, had a couple of months with no problems, then started getting the random reboots, with no error log, and that message. I'm far from alone in this, have tried disabling all but one audio driver, kept the side off the PC to prove it's not a cooling problem, and it still happens. No BSOD, the PC just turns itself off and starts up again.
I posted a while back here when it first started, before I knew it was a common problem. Can happen several times in quick succession, then not for a week, then again out of nowhere.
And I'm thinking of going back to XP to avoid it.

Much googling has shown it's very common and nobody has a definitive cure. MS just fob you off by saying it could be all sorts, but I assume you guys know a fair bit more about these things and MS's plans than I do, so thought I'd ask.

Awhile back, I made the following post detailing a long-time problem with my wife's computer I was looking for help with:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1284034

Long story short: Random BSOD's with her XP SP2 computer. I tried every single hardware and software fix I could possibly think of, aside from a new motherboard and a new hard drive. The HD passed a diagnostic test from the manufacturer's website, so I was ready to tell her that the problem was the motherboard.

Then I decided I should install a trial copy of Vista and see if that reproduced the problem.

Wouldn't you know it, her computer hasn't crashed a single time under Vista. Right now it's set up to dual-boot Vista and XP, and a briefly foray into XP last night resulted in a crash in under five minutes. But Vista seems to be functioning fine, and she even got some new hardware from my old build (more RAM and a dual-core 3800+), so she can run it smoothly.

She's about ready to purchase a copy of Vista and just go with it, but I'm curious about getting a second opinion. Can anyone here speculate a bit as to why it crashes under XP and not Vista? Do you think it's a good idea to go forward with a Vista purchase?

Answer:Vista solving longtime problems?

If Vista works, it makes sense to go with it. Probably driver related, though.

In November I built a new system which was running well aside from some minor graphics driver hiccups. Over the last few months though I've been experiencing many dumps and reboots caused by a number of processes and applications. Sometimes A BSOD will show, sometimes everything just freezes and other times the system will just crash and reboot itself. It has been quite frustrating. Here are the guts of my system:

CPU: Core i5 750 2.66Ghz
MoBo: Gigabyte P55M-UD4
Memory: Corsair XMS3 PC3-12800
System drive: Intel X25-M 80GB SSD
Data drive: Seagate 1TB Barracuda HDD
Videocard: Sapphire Radeon HD 5850

After reading threads on this forum I've tried to diagnose the issue, but only found that I'm unable to narrow down what is causing the crashes. I've updated the drivers and firmware to the latest for the chipset, lan, videocard and SSD but still had crashes. In the last month I've ran diagnostics on both the SDD and HDD and came up error-free. Also ran memtest86+ on both DIMMs individually with 45 passes error-free, so the diagnosis tools make it seem like it's not a hardware fail.

Can someone please help me figure out what is crashing my system? Attached are the minidump files in a zip. If there is anything other information that would help just let me know.

I have an old PC since nine months which I am working with. I have just upgraded it from dial-up to broadband. Now I notice that Ad-Aware SE 1.6 will not update as when required to and I have to do it manually by downloading a zip file and extracting the contents to the program folder.
So I downloaded Ad-Aware 2007 to the desktop and tried to install it, but I received the message "the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation". This PC used to be an office machine but now I am the only user. Where in Windows can I find what needs changing (and I think I have the old password name)?
