Question: Remove the TrustedInstaller or Authenticated Users or System users fro

Hi

I have Windows 10 v1511 Enterprise 64 bit.

From the Command Prompt, run as administrator, how should I do to remove any TrustedInstaller or Authenticated Users or System users from the ACLs of an entire directory structure also contains files and links (this must not involve the ACLs of their destination)?

Thanks

Preferred Solution: Remove the TrustedInstaller or Authenticated Users or System users fro

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean by "this must not involve the ACL's of their destination". Is this some kind of school coursework?

I read an article that suggested that changing your permissions on your backup drive(s) to not allow "Modify" would prevent ransomware from encrypting the drive. It sounds sensible but does anyone know if it is a good path to go down? I am running Malwarebytes Beta Anti-Ransomeware software but was just looking for that extra protection.

Many of my files are also on Dropbox and as I understand that, if there is a ransomeware attack, Dropbox backs up a copy of any file changed before the new (encrypted file) is written. It does this backup for any file and keeps the backups for a minimum of 30 days. So I can get them back. Just looking for any extra protection.

If there is a thread on this subject, please point me to it as I couldn't find one.

Thank You.

Answer:Permission for Authenticated Users - Ransomware?

You'd be better off unplugging the drive.

If you change the file permissions of course any malware could (if running with administrator privileges) change them back anyway before running the encryption.

The dropbox facility you mention is certainly useful too.

In Windows 7 is the authenticated user group supposed to have any rights on the root drive? I noticed on a machine with a clean Windows 7 install nothing is checked off at all under that group. On the same machine the authenticated users group has rights for the D drive. My brain isn't working today.

Answer:Windows 7 authenticated users group

It has permissions, check the advanced security settings windows. Its all in there.

Sometimes when I move directories the resulting directory needs to be modified under the security tab to add the "Authenticated Users" user in order to remove the lock icon.

I've verified that I am the owner of the directory...and the other users with access to the directory is "System", My Account and "domain/Administrators".

Answer:Directory Permissions - Why Authenticated Users?

Just more information to make sure I'm being clear.

If I download a group of wallpapers from Usenet and they go into the "Downloads" library the directory has no lock. Once I move them to the "Walls" library, there is a lock.

If I add "Authenticated Users" to the directory's security tab the lock goes away.

Is this a feature, bug or user error? Any one it might be, how do I stop this behavior?

P.S. This also happens outside of libraries as well, so I don't think it has anything to do with junctions/symlinks.

How to remove the "Authenticated Users" "Create Folders" permission from the root of the C Drive via command-line?
I know this question has been asked many times before, but nothing works for us!
We tried the following:
Take ownership: I cannot take ownership using the Administrator account (local and Domain Admin accounts) of the root C:. Error Access Denied
Cuurent root C: owner is TrustedInstaller and acnnot be changed.
We cannot change or remove the Create Folders permission of the Authenticated Users of the root C: . Error Access Denied.
Drive C: is hidden via GPO, but many users can enter it from the File-Explorer and create folders in the root C:.
We do not want -for many reasons- to Block/ Prevent Access to C: via GPO.
We also tried to run cacls and/or icacls under the system-account (PSEXEC -i -s -d CMD). Error Access Denied.
icacls C:\ /deny *S-1-5-11:(NP)(AD)
Error Access Denied.
icacls C:\ /remove:g *S-1-5-11
Error Access Denied.
cacls c:\ /e /c /R "Authenticated Users"
Error Access Denied.
Also using GPO "Computer Configuration\Security Settings\Restricted Groups ..." does not work!
Now we have this issue on over 450 pc's on our network. Nothing work. Please help! How to remove the "Authenticated Users" "Create Folders" permission from the root of the C: Drive on command-line?

1. I suppose once a user logs in, it becomes a member?

2. PC1 is sharing drive D and has given "users" full control to it (sharing permission settings). Drive D security settings has "authenticated users" with full control. if PC2 decided to mapped the shared drive, will the user become a member of authenticated users?

thank you

Answer:question on authenticated users (vista/win7)

No, the user logging in has to have an account on the sharing PC.

When I right-click properties for the device now the SECURITY tab has gone. I only have general/tools/hardware/sharing/readyboost/customise tabs.

Hello sevenforums readers. I have a real problem on my hands, and have already done as much hunting and digging, even on this site to remedy the problem. I was attempting to block home network computers from accessing my user folder since it was showing up on the network no matter what I tried to stop it, and accidentally ended up denying access to my C: drive for ALL authenticated users. Even though I cancelled the process almost immediately, the effect still took place? Very annoying. I am running on windows 7 32 bit. The security tab has been removed from the C: drive properties. It appears in SAFE MODE, but it still denies me access from changing the permissions anyways. I tried creating a 'authenticated' user and everything I can possibly do that the internet has suggested I try. I have tried going through the CMD as an administrator in SAFE MODE using the takedown /f (foldername) /r/d y, and the steps that follow that. doesn't work. I have tried downloading the ownerchanger.reg to add permission change functionality to the context menu, and I can't even download it, as I can only assume that my hdd in all it's functionality has now been limited to a read only system, I can't even COPY files that are remotely associated with the C: drive, which is everything I value on this machine.

Finally, I attempted to use my laptop manufacturers recovery system on the D: drive, only to find that 'windows installer' cannot be accessed either. I have not tried formatting the HDD a... Read more

I work in a lab environment where we have an OpenLDAP Authentication and the Machines using Samba to join a domain to handle logging onto Windows workstations.
What we are looking for is to allow users to log on using their LDAP credentials, but not create a profile (Like a Guest Profile).  This is so we don't have to constantly try and purge profiles on the machine as it stacks up over time and these computers
are used by over 100s of people on a daily basis.

Hi Everyone,

I am the Administrator of a Windows Server (2008 R2) Domain. Recently I was presented with the challenge of limiting access to only one specific user account on one specific client computer (Windows 7 x64). This was to ensure that only one staff member could log onto the one specific workstation.

In order to perform this task I followed option B, How to restrict use of a computer to one domain user only, and removed the "NT Authority\Authenticated Users" object.

Whilst this has limited access to the workstation, it seems that the logon account which had previously been given Administrator privileges can no longer act as the Administrator. In fact the Domain Administrator account can't act as the computer administrator either!!!

For example if I now logon as the Administrator or the User and try to change the computer name, both the "Network ID", and the "Change" buttons are greyed out, indicating that I can't make any changes.

Both the Administrator account, and the Users account have been manually added to both the Administrators Group and the Users Group.

I now want to re-add the "NT Authority\Authenticated Users" object. Is this possible? If so any suggestions on how to achieve this will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

I have a few Temp logons recently, and then had to copy my profile over to a new user account. Creation of the new user account seems to have gone pretty well, once I signed into my Microsoft account, everything associated with it is as it should be.

However, there a few of the older "Users" listed under This PC, which are not shown at the manage accounts page. Is there a simple way to delete the old accounts that are not in use. Deleting hem from file explorer did not work. Thanks.

Hey Guys,

If you are using Kaspersky on Windows XP, and your Blue Shift is not working, I may have a solution for you. If you go into Kapersky, go to My Security Zone and then application activity. Go to Category and then click all. Scroll down until you find everything to do with Blue Shift ( Half Life Launcher, installation etc). Right click on each of these and change the status to Trusted. The game should work now. I hope this helps I've had the problem for a while and it was driving me nuts. I'd also like to thank the user "fragger" for giving me the idea to look at Kaspersky. If your reading this, hope it helps you out buddy.

Can anyone help me regain Security Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder which I lost while looking at the access rights. I mistakenly closed the box while playing with the access rights and lost any access to the file.
I pulled the access rights to the file using icacls they are below.

application data
D:PAI(D;OICI;FA;;;WD)(A;;0x1200a9;;;WD)(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)S:AI

I am thinking I can change the information in the file and restore it. Not sure exactly what to change?

I was also thinking I could pull the info from another computer running with the same operating system and reapply them to this file? Would this work?

I looked at Previous Versions of the upper level folder. Can I restore a previous version of this whole folder? Will it restore the Application Data folder with the prior permissions?

Answer:Lost Access Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder

Are you asking about the Application Data or Appdata folder?

If Application Data, this is not a real folder but a junction used to allow interface with legacy programs. No access is necessary since it is pointing to the Appdata folder.

hi guys,

really need some help on this one cause i cant seem to get how something that sounds so simple is so hard to do.

i got a client with a workstation that has a local user account on it.
they also have a domain which he has another account on there.

so i have local account joe1 and domain account joe2. now i need to get joe 1 to combind and merge outlook and my docs with joe2. and then get joe2 to stay on the server so that it remains a account that can be accesses on any computer on the domain network. with this in mind the user profile needs to be saved on the server and the profile can be copied to the computer that his sitting at when he loggs on.

anyway i can figure out how to move the local (joe1) account to the server (joe2)i have tried a command moveuser but i keep getting a parameter error on there (error 87) .

i typed it like this

moveuser joe1 (company doamin)\joe2 /c:\\(client machine)

User 1 logs in and works does whatever... Doesn't log out but screensaver goes back to user screen.

User 2 logs in (switching users - not logging out user 1) and gets to work.

Sometime later (ie. not right away) and not at a prescribed time, the network stops working.

I try to disable / enable the network adapter and the machine freezes.   Reboot fixes problem.

If user 1 or user 2 is the only one logged in then never a problem.

Anyone heard of this?
Thanks for any help!

Answer:Multiple Windows 7 Users-Switch between Users-network stops working

When switching users, it's always a good idea to have User 1 close out any applications and documents they have open and then log out before User 2 logs in. It sounds like you have fast user switching enabled, but I'm not aware of that causing any network issues -- unless User 1 was doing something that required a network connect.

Check the Event Viewer for error logs from the time it froze when you tried to disable and enable the network adapter. Post the event ID and description here if you need help diagnosing the issue from the log files. Perhaps another fix is to disable fast user switching, so that users are always forced to log out before someone else can log in.

working with vista homeprem sp2 32bit here. ran a quick avast scan a few minutes ago, it caught some small-time junk in the temporary internet files (which were purged easily enough), but it also pointed out C:\users\all users as "the system cannot find the path specified". so I open up windows explorer and try to go there. cue the "refers to a location that is unavailable" error message. now, I don't usually need to prod around in there so I'm not familiar with what normally happens, but I know vista loves to have a bunch of directories displayed that are shortcuts it uses for people who leave "hide protected OS files" checked (I don't, I want to see what's where) which really ought to not be shown when you're not hiding stuff but I digress, that's for MS to be groused at after win8 flops.

SO. should I panic that I've had another thing sneak past the security screens (mvp hosts file, spyware blaster, avast's shields, mbam scans)? nothing else seems out of sorts, but one man's paranoia is another man's preparation, and all.

Answer:C:\Users\All Users refers to a location that is unavailable *error message*

Hi everyone,

I am the web masters of a local snowmobile club and our new website is having a few problems with printing. Please take a look at the site, http://www.strathroysnoblizzards.com/Strathroy_Sno-Blizzards/index.html

As you can see it has a black background which when printed on my Mac OS X has no problems with printing (it leaves out black background and keeps the text and images) and prints everything.

The problem is that one of our members are ticked that they can not print the site because of the black showing up above the text and images and I really don't want to change the background because it look good the way it is, so is there any way to change to printer settings or some ideas for him to help him out with this problem.

Second problem is that out of 4 pages, 2 are blank with nothing on it and there is suppose to be text and images on those pages, anyway how to fix this too?

Thanks Guys

Answer:Website printing??? (backgrounds causing problems with PC users but not Mac users)

I only have one suggestion. Do they have this unchecked?
Print background colors and images.

IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advance Tab-> scroll down
to the Printing headline. Make sure it is unchecked.

How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

All of my computers are wired... but, I would like to give my retired neighbor (he's 64 years old) wireless access. But, I don't want him or anyone else access to my shared files b/w desktop/laptop. So, should I put it on a different subnet? Do I need a 2nd router? Right now, I have the BEFSR41 with a WAP11 AP on 192.168.1.245 with the router on 192.168.1.1 (both are 255.255.255.0 subnet).

Thanks!

Answer:How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

I would setup a DMZ, you can do this by using two physical routers or something like smooth wall with multiple nics. If I were you I would setup smooth wall on a crap old box and install 3 network cards into the old computer. Hooking your cable modem to one of the network cards in the smoothwall box will be like pluggin in your cable modem to the wan port on the back of your router. I would plug your wireless router into to the next nic on your smooth wall box. If your neighbor is the only one using the wireless do the following. Enable WEP, don't broadcast your ssid, filter by mac address, and limit the total number of connections to 1. That should keep your wireless rather secure. With the final network card in the smooth wall box attach either a standard switch or even another router. Smooth wall has built in DHCP support and it will allow you to set a range of ips.Hard wire all your home computer to the switch and your in business.

I don't remember when, but I availed myself of the free Windows 10 upgrade sometime back. I was using 8.1 and I had, at some point, moved C:\Users and all its associated folders to E:. Everything has worked fine and Win10 didn't have a problem. I did notice that there was still a C:\Users, but the only folder it contains is Administrator.

This was probably not a good move to make. Moving data folders, like Pictures, Documents, etc., is fine, but moving the actual User Profiles was not such a good idea. My E: drive is no longer large enough to hold all my photos and other data. I bought a replacement drive large enough, but having my Users Profiles on E: is now a problem and I want to move them back to C:, only without the data folders.

I can delete all the existing data files from those default folders (I have backed them all up), so now I need to find a way to restore the Users folder and contents to C:. I've tried researching the problem, but found nothing that specifically applies to my situation. The TenForums article, "Relocating Users folder on an existing Windows installation" Seems to be as close as I can get. Unfortunately, this part has made me take pause and ask you all for help:

Do you know what I should do? Maybe Kari's still around and can reply? Any guidance would be appreciated.

If you used the Sysprep method to relocate the Users folder to E: drive, you can use the same method to relocate it back to C: drive. The warning you quoted is when doing this in a clean install, it does not apply when moving Users folder back to C: drive which will always be accepted and OK for Windows.

Follow these simple steps (looks more complicated than it in reality is!):

Create a new, temporary local user account, name it as you wish like "Dummy" or such (tutorial)Change Dummy's account type to administrator (tutorial)Sign out from all other user accounts, sign in to DummyDisable all other user accounts except Dummy, the one you are currently signed in (tutorial). No worries, accounts and their data will remain intact, deactivating (disabling) them temporarily is done because sometimes Sysprep causes existing user accounts to lose Start and Search / Cortana functionality. When we are ready we will again activate (enable) all old user accountsWhen done, open an elevated Notepad (right click and select Run as Administrator) copy the following code and paste it to a new text document]:

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

What is the best way to share execution priviledges between limited users, power users, and administrators?

Say an application has already been installed by a higher priviledged user type, and a limited user cannot execute it - e.g. an ISP login software, or Spy Sweeper. Note: ISP login software lacks profile, so I suppose I could just create that, however, Spy Sweeper is a head scratcher.

Should the application be uninstalled and reinstall under All Users? How do you install an application to allow All Users to use it?

I have already tried to use the "Run As" right-click Properties w/Shift key approach and that does not work.

Is there an approach with regard to local security policy that would do what I want to do? How is that done? Or, is Access Control List the way to go?

I need to add shortcuts for our corporate ERP application.

Answer:C:\Users\All Users\Start Menu - Access Denied !!!

That is because it is not a real folder it is a junction point for old software. The real place is:

Hi, There seems to have been a problem with a Microsoft Antispyware update, so those of you who have BOTH Norton software, and use Microsoft Antispyware program, had better wait till the next update which will hopefully resolve this:

http://forums.techguy.org/security/...spyware-deleting-parts-norton-anti-virus.html

We are seeing several other posts with this issue, right now, so I am sure it is not a mistake.

Answer:READ!! Norton users/Microsoft Antispyware users.....

This only affects the corporate edition and has been corrected in the latest MS Anti-Spyware updates.

Hi all! I've found a found two windows xp based APPS that'll optimize your performance "Right Mark CPU Utility" is the 1st one and your just set the profiles to the optimal performance... another tip that you could use to optimize your turion 64 is to uninstall the turion 64 update with evidently keeps your processor running at a specified temp with does limit your performance. Another application that you could use to optimize your ati 200m or anyother mobile based graphics card is Power Strip.. Hope's this helps everybody out!

I used this app a while ago to watch and record IPTV on Windows Media Center. But I think they can do it with other sources too. First off this is my work laptop.

I have my standard Music library, which is a directory directly off the C drive.

When I download or move into that "Music" directory the directory I moved has a lock icon on it.

In order to get rid of the icon, I need to add "Authenticated Users" to the list of groups, and then I need to take ownership of the directory under my account in order to to do anything.

If this directory is in my download directory, it's fine...but as soon as I move it there the above situation arises.

What have I messed up?

Answer:Need To Add "Authenticated Users" Every Directory Within "Music"

I used the search function for directory permissions, ownership and inherited permissions and they all led to the Security forum. I'm pretty sure file security and permissions falls under OS security.

As Administrator, I?ve created my own folders for my documents. These are located in the D: partition of my hard drive; and they are shown in the Library section of the contents of the computer, on the left.
Now, when opening the computer from the Guest Account, my own folders do not appear in the Library, all right. But just below the Library there appears the rest of the computer content, including the D: partition, and any Guest can access all the folders and files there, including my documents.
How can I hide the folders of each User from any other Guests, not only in the Library but also in their actual location in the hard drives?
Thanks for any help.
ACA

Answer:Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

OK this appears to be a simple permissions issue.

go to your root folder on the D: drive and right click the folder and select properties.

on the security tab you should see a list of those who have access to the folder - Make sure that your user has full rights and remove all rights to the "everyone" user group. This when OK'd should xascade down to all files and folders contained in the folder

If you wish you can adjust the rights available to any other particular user on the system - Make sure that you do not remove or change any rights given to system or administrative users unless you fully understand the result

Question: Add/ Remove Users

I wanted to delete all old users and create a new one. I am currently working from the Administrator account and just finished fixing some other problems. Vista does nothing when I click on the manage other accounts link in the user accounts under the control panel. Also, when I click on "Configure advanced user profile properties" or "Change my enviroment variables" an error pops up stating:

Windows cannot find '%windir%\\system32\\rundll32.exe'. Makes sure you tuped the name correctly, and then try again.

Any help with this?

Answer:Add/ Remove Users

Not a lot of info to go by here, but have you tried running mbam or a similar AV? I once had a virus on my Vista laptop that changed a bunch of access rights so that I would be unable to remove it, and would generate false reports similar to what you posted.

I am trying to clean up some workstations that are on a new server and newly configured network. have two users showing up in user accounts in control panel that I installed. But in the file structure of Explore, I have about 4 users that I'm having problems removing. I have successfully removed about 4 other without difficulty.
1. Trying to remove Jim. I get a 'cannot delete: file start[1]. could not be found' . When I search for this file i'm told the file doesn't exist. I have narrowed down to one folder named IE5 about 4 folders under Jim.
2. Trying to remove a previous administrator and users, I am told I don't have permission delete denied access. I have gone through every permission check I can think of but can't find where I as administrator could grant more permissions.

As I mentioned above, none of these accounts show up in the control pannel user accounts manager.

What's up Qwerty.

In XP, you can choose to run a program as a different user. Right-click the shortcut, select Advanced, then check "Run with different credentials". When you execute the program, it will prompt which user to run it as. You may have to read up on how to make it not prompt for a password each time.

Is there a way to create user files or folders that are not invisible to other users. Invisible to mean the other user see absolutely nothing to do with another user. Users in this case to mean Windows 10 "Standard User" Please note that if solution cannot be accomplished with Home edition, please note that in your reply --Thanks

Here is an example. There are 2 user accounts on my computer, not including mine. The computer has a 2nd drive that I use for all my personal data. When I created a Standard User, that user apparently can see all my folders and files. They cannot open them but they can see the titles. I want to create an environment where each user only can see and manipulate those files and folders they create/own. Other than that the data drive would empty.

If this is something you know about or dealt with I would very much like to hear your thoughts and a concrete and simple way to accomplish this.

Again, thanks

I posted this message in the W95/98/ME fourm, but this seems like the more appropriate place for the question:

I work for a company that has a small network consisting of one NT 4.0 Server box and around 40-60 client computers, mostly running W95 with a few running W98/2000/ME. Anyway, two managers here have W98 machines, and periodically after they have logged into the network and used different mapped network drives all of a sudden they can't access any mapped drives and they appear to be disconnected from the network (well, they are, as they can't do anything network related). The network is your basic ethernet using simple UTP cabling and hubs. The cabling appears to be plugged in properly, especially since they can log in and be connected to the network for a period of time. Rebooting solves the problem, but that isn't acceptable to my managers, so I have to figure out a way to get it so they don't get kicked off (besides just giving them W95). I have done a lot of research by myself on this, but I can't find any answers....if anyone has any ideas I'll be grateful, and will consider naming one of my future children after you. If you need more info, I'll be checking this board tomorrow throughout work, and will be more than happy to provide you with any other info you need. Thanks

Nate W.

Anyone who uses/has-used PC-cillin ... well more to the point, does anyone like this program?

I bought it for "fun", before trying it (smart, I know!)...but it is extremely annoying in so many ways.

It warns you about everything. Granted, that sounds good, but--just browsing the net, it will find dozens of "spyware/ad sites" (and it has always been right thus far), but they are iframes, popups etc. They are everywhere--and a warning for each one!

"Venus spy-trap" they call it. I thought that was funny in itself But really, the one thing on there that is just a PITA: I added two domains to my hosts file, and there is no way to "allow" the changes permanently--upon reopening the browser, their warnings come back. Of course, you could disable the monitoring of the file, but then what is the purpose!

Lastly (thus far), I get meeting notices via Outlook / Lotus Notes. They say these emails are *viruses* because they're in an unusual format! Better yet: the fix...well, you should check it out!
http://esupport.trendmicro.com/suppo...ntID=en-126819

You edit the registry to fix something so stupid...

Ok, end of rant (sorry), but I really am curious--those of you who use this, why?

I am the Administrator account. I installed some programs that other users might use but they don't wish the icons to be on their desktops all the time. The icons were put on their desktops automatically during installation - I was NOT given a choice to put icons on desktop or not, as programs typically do.

I went onto their screens and dragged the unwanted icons (there are now about 3 or 4 on everyone's desktop) to their recycle bins and got a message saying "Access iss denied," - the user can't delete certain icons from their own desktops.

I tried going to their Desktop folders in Documents & Settings to delete the icons from their desktop folders. Strangely...the icons I want to remove do not appearthere. (Can't figure THAT one out!)

I'm hoping someone can tell me how to accomplish this.

When I log into her account and try to delete the shortcut, it first asks for my admin password, then when it deletes the shortcut, it deletes the shortcut from my desktop also.Question 1:How can I setup the system so that each user is separate from the other so that a change to one desktop doesn't impact the other?Question 2:Is there a way for me to install applications only under my account and not have them available to any other users? Answer:How do I remove Win 7 desktop shortcuts from other users?

Some programs will ask if you want to install the software for all users or a single user, in this case you can tell it to install for just you. This doesn't actually keep the other users from using it, it just puts the shortcuts to the program in your profile only.If you don't get this option, you can remove the shortcuts from all users and put them in your profile, here's how: Launch Windows Explorer and go to Users, Public, Public Desktop, and look for the program's icon. Right click on it and select Cut. Then back out to the Users folder again and go to your folder. Open it up, then open up your desktop folder. Right click in it and select Paste. This will move the icons so they show up on your desktop only.

i have been searching around for a while, and i just cant seem to find it, even the one item i thought was it

Computer Configuration>Windows Settings>Security Settings>Local Policies>Security Options>evices:Allowed to format and eject removable media

only gives me the ability to select

Administrators
Administrators and Power Users
Administrators and Interactive Users

but this is a domain, and i have my OUs and Groups set up with different GPOs so there really isnt such a thing as a power user or interactive user..

all i need is for regular users to be able to click "safely remove hardware" so they can eject their Flash Drives

any help? please?

thanks

Answer:Group Policy to allow users to remove USB Devices..

Interactive Users is what you're looking for, I do believe.
If Administrators and Interactive Users is selected, then all users will be able to format and eject removable media.

After upgrading the system and installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 on my Thinkpad T510, I faced the issue with fingerprints. The internal device contains my biometric info (as a user on the old system). While trying to submit fingerprint info on new system, the Security Solution FP says that the user is enrolled already (for sure, it is me on the old system), and fails to associate this info with my new account. What should be the solution? The best is to be able to associate this info with both my accounts. Anyway, on my new system I even fail to remove my old fingerprint data...

I am trying to find out how Lenovo has configured Win 7 such that each new user gets two icons- Lenovo Shop App and Lenovo Device Experience. I know a user can unpin them, but this is for a business and we cannot expect every user to be able to accomplish this task. We do not want to create a support snafu when users try to use these icons.

I know there is a local GPO that can eliminate pinned icons completely, but this is not what I want to achieve.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. I have around 15-20 computers that are not connected to a server and I have students that are getting things on the computers they shouldn't and then putting them in folders and hiding the folders. I know I can just go in and choose show hidden folders but I would like to just remove that option for them. I still want them to be able to create folders and use them as normal. I just want to remove their rights to hide folders (escpecially folders they create). Even if I had to remove this option for everyone, I am willing to do it.  I would prefer to do this somehow in the GPO but am willing to change the Registry. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Remove or Grey out Attributes on all folders for users

Sorry, but I know nearly nothing about Group Policy.

You might want to post this in another forum (such as networking or software - maybe business applications or the Server OS's)
Title it with a reference to Group Policy in order to attract those who know about it.

Hello,

I'm using an Active Directory and I want that users don't use the windows folders.

-- Every user has in his "Profile" a Home Folder like: * Connect | Y: | to | \\sambastorage\USER |

-- In a GPO I'm using UserConfiguration\Prefences\WindowsConf\Registry to modify attributes.

With this options the users only view Y: But in a OpenDialog if you "GO UP" to "Desktop" and user could see: Libraries, USER FOLDER (for ex. John Smith) and Computer.

I want that user only see Computer or that he can't go up to Desktop. Other thing could be change the USERFOLDER to Y: and the Y: folder has the normal folders (AppData, Documents, Music, ....) and the normal user folders in Y:

Could you help me??

Thanks

I have a problem. My family is really dumb and lazy when it comes to virus and malware security. I have tried to make them understand what they are doing but it's not getting through. It's so bad that our internet service provider has cut off the internet atleast twice due to viruses and the like. I have a firewall and I have the virus scanner set to run on schedule.

Now to my question. I use AVG because it's free and seems to work well. The program is able to find all the viruses on the computer and the majority of them located in other users' private folders, for example, their Documents and Settings, Temporary Internet Files, etc. The program is not able to remove these viruses while I am running it from my username.

I have told my family they need to run the program once a week and showed them how to, but they are just plain lazy and never do it.

So, is there a way around this? Another program maybe, or a setting I can change? Can I do everything myself or from an administrator account, or am I stuck going into each of their usernames and cleaning it out one by one?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:How to remove viruses from users' private folders

Have you tried running the scan in safe mode? Also, you might want to look into the Trinity Rescue Kit and Barts PE. They are both live cd's that do a great job of scanning from outside of Windows.

Our office is growing fast, and I am having an issue with rogue users. The main software we use (AutoDesk Building Design Suite) requires users to be admins on their machines. However, we are having users install software on their own...including personal programs, educational licensed software, bootleg software, etc. In the process, several users have installed spyware/malware, leading to bigger issues.

Without strict support from management to enforce policy, but with pressure from management to stop this from happening, I am looking for a way to stop user accounts from installing software. I would like to keep my admin account capable of doing this, of course. We are running Win7 Pro 64 on all machines.

I am not too familiar with modifying policies in Win7. If you can tell me where to look, I have no issue doing the reading; I just cannot seem to find the correct info with the searches I have done.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Remove install ability for admin users

You can use the Group Policy Editor to create a Software Restriction Policy. You can also use it to Whitelist applications. You can start with the following.

Hello,
I come across an issue. I have some powershell scripts in a folder. My demand is that i'd like to share it with remote domain users. But i don't want them to check the content inside.
So, when i set the NTFS permission for the users,  I removed the read permission only retained 'Traverse folder/execute file" permission
and "list folder/read data" permission. however, the remote users could access the folder remotely but failed to see any scripts inside the folder. just looks like the the folder is empty.
My questions is if my requirement is viable with NTFS permission.

Hi all,

I have a bunch of email distribution lists in Exchange that contain both users and other distribution lists.

Basically I have "User A" and "User B" in both "Group A" and "Group B", but "Group B" is also part of "Group A".

Group A
---> User A
---> User B
---> Group B
Group B
---> User A
---> User B

Since User A and User B are already technically part of Group A by way of Group B, I want to remove them from Group A, and only leave them in Group B, which is still part of Group A.

Is there a powershell or other script to do this automatically? Having to do this manually, comparing groups and subgroups for hundreds of DL's is very time consuming.

All help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

We have a problem with the occasional user being applied inappropriately to AD groups.
What I would like to see happen is have a GPO where if the user account (requesting to be added to a group)  is not in OU location A, B, or C then the admin is not allowed to add the user to the group or the user is removed from the group. Is it possible
to do something like this with GPO?<o:p></o:p>

Hi,

A PC is using the "fade-in" effect for the start menu and I wanted to get rid of that, so I followed the instructions on that page: http://www.theeldergeek.com/eliminate_fade_effect_in_xp_menus.htm

It worked just fine, but only works for the currently logged in user. As soon as I switch accounts on the same machine, the problem comes back.

I made some research but couldn't find a solution, does anyone know if it's possible at all to disable the start menu fade-in effect for all (current and future) users at once, in other words change the default setting?

If it's not possible, I guess I'll have to resort to some startup script that quietly runs that registry tweak for every user that logs on, but this is less than ideal.

Thanks a lot in advance for the help!

Answer:Remove start menu fade effect for all users

It would be fairly easy to do with the Group Policy Editor.

Click Start > Run > type gpedit.msc

Expand:

User Configuration > Windows Settings > Scripts (Logon/Logoff) > Logon

Write a simple batch file for your registry tweak and add it to Logon (for local computer).

However, I fail to see the use for such a tweak for the Start Menu??? I've just tried it after rebooting and it doesn't change much.
