Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

Question: Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

Hi,

I have unchecked the option to 'show icons instead of thumbnails' (view>options>folder options) and I have checked 'show icons' (performance>advanced) but still I get icons instead of thumbnails. I have closed and restarted file explorer multiple times to no change. I have posted the screenshot below to show the current settings. Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Thumbnails not displaying: Unchecked 'show icons'/checked 'thumbnails'

When you right click on the folder itself and select properties, there is a tab called customise. In this tab you can select what type of folder you want and choose Pictures. You can have this cascade down to subfolders as well. As for the other settings you mentioned, I usually keep my folder settings as the defaults.

Hello, the other morning I turned on my computer to find that none of the program icons were displaying on my desktop or taskbar, nor were file thumbnails displaying in file folders. Everything (programs on desktop and files) still had their names displayed so I am able to access them, but I can't see their icons which is incredibly annoying.
I've been searching around for solutions and even tried the Windows Club Thumbnail and Icon Cache Rebuilder but nothing seems to work. I think this is because I don't seem to have any icon database files. Moreover, I don't seem to have an Appdata folder under my account. Rather, there is a folder called "Default.migrated" in the Users folder next to my account folder. This folder has all the folders that, I'm given to understand, lead up to the folder which should have the icon database files in them, including AppData, but navigating to the end of this chain of folders yields an empty folder called "Windows".
If anyone has any insight as to why my icon database is screwed up or how to fix it, I welcome your suggestions. I should mention I am using Windows 10.
Thank You!

NO ... and the same for the Desktop.
The only way is to shut off all thumbnail viewing use a 3rd party thumbnail viewer.

Hi, yesterday I don't know what I did but suddenly video thumbnails disappeared, so I reinstalled K-Lite Codec Pack MEGA version. I'm using a laptop with Windows 8.1 x64. VLC is the default media player. I've installed MPC-HC and K-Lite Codec Pack MEGA. Everything is up to date.

Once I reinstalled K-Lite MEGA pack, thumbnails appeared again, but now something's wrong. When I open the "Videos" folder, VLC icons don't appear. All icons are blank (there's no icon, just blank space with the file's name below) until the thumbnail is loaded.

Before, ALL icons appeared (VLC icon) and then the thumbnails got loaded. If I refreshed, the thumbnails didn't start to load again, the window blinked for 1 millisecond and then everything was already loaded.

Now, if I refresh, it starts all over again, all icons are blank and the thumbnails start to load again.

I've reinstalled MPC-HC, K-Lite MEGA pack, Disk cleanup thumbnails, show only icons, apply and then uncheck that option... Nothing changes

I don't understand anything. Here's a screenshot in the middle of the process:
There should be VLC icons instead of those blank spaces, and it shouldn't start to load everything each time I refresh.

Thanks!

Answer:Video icons don't show up until thumbnails are loaded

Question, why did you need the Codec pack to begin with? I find they cause more issues.

All my thumbnails load with no problem with windows media player with exception of some types of video files.

May have to reset. Try SFC.

Hi:
Since updating to Windows 10, whenever I open file folders to view jpgs, the files' thumbnails are a generic blue mountain icon instead of thumbnails of the images themselves. How do I get the icons to go back to being thumbnail images again? Is there a command or menu option that will change this for all jpgs in my folders rather than having to change one by one?
Thanks!

Answer:Want jpg icons to show image thumbnails instead of generic icons

I've been googling around but can't seem to find an answer to this seemingly simple question. The documents and spreadsheets on my desktop show up as a thumbnail preview of the file (which is kinda stupid because all of the documents and spreadsheets look the exact same). So I want these to just show the Word or Excel icon instead. I know you can go to:

Explorer>Tools>Folder Option>View>Files and Folders>"Always show icons, never thumbnails"

But then my picture files just show the Windows Picture Viewer icon instead of the picture thumbnail. I'm just wondering if there's a way to assign icon or thumbnail settings to specific file types or extensions? I'd like my pictures to have thumbnails but all other file types to show only icons. I'm currently using Windows 7 and system details are in the sig...

Answer:(Win7) How to show icons for some file types and thumbnails for others?

If you don't explicitly tell Word or Excel to save a thunbmail of the file along with the file, it will use the default Word/Excel document icon (which happens to look like a document from either of those programs). Can't you just change the default icon to something else?

To answer your question, though, no, I don't think it's possible.

If you select a file it will preview it in the Preview pane (maybe not all types of files). If you'd like the Preview pane smaller and the main area larger drag the divider to the right. If you don't want the Preview pane at all get rid of it (Organize - Layout - remove check from Preview pane).

Hey all,

Trying to figure out a way to display thumbnails in certain folders (ie: Photos & Videos) and icons in others. Unfortunately it seems this isn't possible, as the only option I've found is to always show thumbnails in all folders or always show icon's.

Anyone happen to know a way around this, help is very appreciated!

Camaren

Answer:"Always Show Icons Never Thumbnails" - Folder Specific Option?

Hello Camaren,

Unfortunately it's just not possible. It's a all or none setting.

The only workaround that I know of to do this is to leave thumbnails turned on and manually change the icon of each folder that you do not want to have thumbnail views for.

I would like thumbnail previews for my pictures but icons for my MP3's. If I check off the "always show icons, never thumbnails" option, my pictures all have the generic JPEG icon rather than a thumbnail preview of the picture. If I uncheck the option, I get thumbnail previews for my pictures but also annoying thumbnail previews on many of my MP3's, which I definitely don't want. Is there a way to set these preferences independently? Thanks.

Some of the folders in "My Pictures" open with what I think is Windows Picture viewer - i.e. one enlarged photo and the rest as a series of thumbnails along the bottom. However other folders open as a straight series of thumbnails on the page - i.e. no viewer. I find this latter arrangement better for my purposes - so how do I get ALL the folders to open in this way? I'd appreciate any help! Thanks.

Answer:Displaying Thumbnails

Open a folder containing pictures. Right Click> the background.(In the drop down menu)Click> 'Customize This Folder'Click> The Tab 'Customize'(Under 'What kind of folder do you want')By clicking the little down arrow, to the right of the scroll bar. You'll see a list of options. Pick...'Photo Album (Best for fewer files)'If you have sub-folders (folders within folders) and you wish them to have the same format also?Check the box 'Also apply this template to all sub folders'Go to the bottom of the page and Click> 'Apply' then Click> 'Ok'

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bit of a strange issue here. Office 2007 was recently installed on a person's PC. When they go to insert clip art into a document it appears that it's only bringing up whatever is locally on the PC, even though it's checked off to access the clip art from office online. When I go into the clip art organizer it looks like it's doing the same thing whenever you search for something...but... If you change the view from Thumbnail to Details it displays the complete list of what you were searching for, including what you would find online. Changing back to Thumbnail view then allows you to see everything you searched for. Unfortunately there's no way to change views inside an Office document otherwise I'd just use that as a work around (I know clip art can be dragged from the organizer into the document).

The fact that this seems to be a display issue led me to believe it's more of a Windows problem rather than an Office one even though it just started happening after the Office install. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office but that didn't solve the issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hey Guys, this is an odd one.

I have a new Win10 machine which completely refuses to display thumbnails for PDF file types.

I have checked the view settings in explorer, and also the visual effects settings and it looks correct.

I have tried using Adobe Reader DC (which required a preferences setting to be changed to generate thumbnails) and also Foxit Reader (which doesn't) with no luck. Currently I have Foxit Reader installed.

PDF`s are currently visible in a preview pane, but PDF thumbnails simply wont show up! JPG thumbnails, however, generate just fine.

I did have this issue a while ago on an old machine, but the issue "went away" - I didn't take any deliberate actions to fix, so I`m at a loss to know whats going on here.

Any replies greatly appreciated.

I admit, I love Vista and since drivers have become stable, Iíve not had any big issues, but there is one thing that Iíve been trying to figure out for a while now with no success and its really bugging me.

Live preview thumbnails seem to go ďblankĒ after a while. If an app has been running for a while, the live preview gets replaced by a static icon. Seems to be some sort of resource management issue, but Iíve been trying to figure out if there is some sort of configuration that can be adjusted to increase some sort of resource limit or turn it off altogether.

Answer:Vista Live Thumbnails become Dead Thumbnails

i've formatted, but last i checked, i had realtime previews of windows, only if the window was open

if i minimized the window, i would only get static images. Are you having the same problem, that might be the way it's supposed to work, i' m not sure

If you start up the Windows Photos app, it opens with a screen displaying all the photos in your user/pictures folder in thumbnail form which I find highly annoying. I want it to start with a blank screen. Is there a way to do this? I thought I might get it to clear up by pointing the folder it monitors to an empty folder and removing the user/pictures folder from settings but the thumbnails are still there...

Answer:How to stop Photos app from displaying thumbnails of my user/pictures folder?

Opening up the photos app shows all pictures in your monitored folders. If you have pictures there, they will be shown, and there's no way to hide them.
If you don't want any pictures there, just remove all folders from the Source list found under settings.
Also turn off showing pictures from OneDrive. Though I don't see the point of doing all of this.
If you've already done all of this and it still shows you pictures, then the thumbnails are probably cached somewhere, and I can't help you with that.

Hello there,

I'm using Windows 7 just like you all. Ultimate edition, 64-bit. The system is running perfectly without any problems, but I got one issue after two weeks of using Win7.

The problem is that video preview thumbnails are not showing up. "Show thumbnails instead of icons" in view options is checked.

Take a look. On the left side is my HDV camcoder captured files, .mt2 format. But on the right side is my video folder, contains .mp4 and .wmv formats. As you can see .mp4 .wmv thumbnails are missing.

Maybe this is the place where I finally will got the solution.

Sorry but as I am not able to read the file extensions on the right hand image, they are too fuzzy, I am not in a position to help.

Answer:How to get thumbnails to show faster

You should read this:

Tweak Aero Peek Delay Time In Windows 7 With Desktop Peek Tweak

That will speed up the desktop peek. This one:

http://www.groovypost.com/forum/wind...ay-t95662.html

will speed up the thumbnail peek.

For those who don't want to follow the second link:

Quote:
1. Click on the Start Button and type in regedit and hit Enter.
2. Navigate through HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Mouse.
3. Right click on MouseHoverTime and select Modify.
4. Set the new value. The default value is 400 milliseconds.
5. Once changed, click OK and restart your computer.

I set mine to 100, logged off and back on, and the thumbnails now appear nearly immediately.

Firefox 15.0.1

When I open a new tab the thumbnails flash for a split second, but then disappear to leave a blank page. It worked previously, but I don't recall if I already had version 15 then.

I read that this may be caused by a full cache, so I cleared it, but even after visiting several sites after that nothing shows. Firefox is set to remember history.

I like FF also, leme tell you what I just done.

I use win 7 x64, you too have a win 7 64bit OS, so it should work for you too if you do it.

I just downloaded & installed Pale Moon a 64 bit browser and very similar to FF in the GUI but Firefox is created with maximum compatibility in mind, Pale Moon is created with efficiency and speed in mind.

When I installed it, first thing I went to youtube to see it handle flash, it did fine and works with netflix too and netflix uses Silverlight. I read that the adobe 64bit flash will only work with 64bit win 7 so it should work with you.

It's new to me, but it's a native 64bit browser and I like it. It's here Pale Moon - x64 builds

edit: i just saw you're from Belgium, you may want to read on it because there might be language issues.

Hello.

When I open a picture folder/photo album on my computer, and the "view" option is set to thumbnails, the thumbnails aren't actually "thumbnails" of the picture its representing. Instead its the picture of the standard picture icon inside of a box. Rephrasing, the thumnails don't show pictures, they show the standard picture icon.

I don't know what happened, because they use to show pictures, and then it randomly stopped.

I use a dell laptop, with windows XP professional.

thanks.

oh and I should note that this problem only occurs with jpeg and gif pictures.

None of my images will show as thumbnails in their folders. Well actaully, i lie. All the jpgs that were put on my pc before a couple of weeks ago still show but new ones just show as a large icon. No matter what program i use to open them with they still wont show....Windows 2000

Answer:Images wont show as thumbnails...

I suppose that my answer is too easy, and I run XP, but in Winows Explorer click on the file that is showing the icons, then View and choose thumbnails.

Hello.

When taskbar is set to anything other then "always combine", it hides titles on preview thumbnails. So now in order to understand which thumbnail belong to what window, we have to shift our eyes from thumbnail to taskbar and search for slightly "highlighted" item, and prey that it's large enough to be able see what it says on it.

Is there a way remove this nonsense and always show titles on thumbnails?

Thank you.

Answer:Always show titles on taskbar thumbnails?

Hello vanowm,

If it may help for now until you get a solution, you could use the method in the tutorial below to increase the size of the taskbar thumbnails to be able to see them better to ID.

I have Windows 2000 pro. I use Vueprint pro as my default viewer for pictures. I have had this same setup on my previous computer and believe there my be a setting or something wrong because none of my thumbnails will preview as before when you are viewing a folder as thumbnails.
My other 2000 computers do not have this problem. only my new toshiba laptop is the oddball.

Also, the pictures no longer display to the left when I have the folder set as a webpage to preveiw in the left column.

Any Ideas? I have already uninstalled vueprint and have change associations several times to imaging or microsoft photo. None of these have helped. I prefer to use vueprint and am not really sure this is due to a program since it affects all folder previewing.

Is there is a way to do this.
Before when I was on Windows XP,I was using a program called VisualTaskTips which had an option to display a preview of the window like here in Win7 and I had an option to choose how fast to see the preview once I point over the taskbar button(for the window).
The preview was set to be displayed instantly(it really was instantly)and when I move the mouse to another button in the taskbar,I had a preview of the next window instantly.

Currently on Win7 there is a delay before showing the window(I fix that with some guide from here...don't remember the link),delay before showing the next window when I move the mouse and kinda long delay before closing the preview window.

Hi, my computer (running Win XP SP 3 freshly installed) displays thumbnail images for mpg files, but not avi files. To be honest I've never had a windows xp computer that was able to display thumbnails for avi's, just mpgs and other files. I've searched and searched on the internet for a solution to the problem and the two solutions that I come up with don't work. I checked the registry key problem, and that's not it. Here's the export of the registry key that I have...
-------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.avi\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@="{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}"

--------------------------------------------
that was one solution and the other was to unregister and register two dll files "regsvr32 shmedia.dll" and "regsvr32 shimgvw.dll"

That didn't work either. The files I'm referring to are encoded in xvid and I don't know if it's specific to that particular codec because I don't have any avi files that are encoded with another codec. I do have the latest xvid package though, straight from the developers so I don't think that's the problem. I don't want to install a codec package because they come with lots of codecs that I'll probably never use so it just seems like it'll waste space and slow my computer down, but if someone who is more knowledgeable that me thinks that I should try that then I will. Just let me know if I should uninstall ... Read more

Answer:Win XP doesn't show thumbnails for xvid avi's

Having varied codecs does not take up that much space at all, or
slow your pc down. They are nothing more than tools to allow you
to view/hear other media formats. Imo you cant have enough. I

I for some reason am not able to get a thumbnail view of any of my .cbr & .cbz files anymore. I had to reinstall Windows 7 a few days ago and now no thumbnails show for my comicbook files. Pdf's show fine once I locate them with Adobe Pro. And usually when I locate them with a certain comicbook reader program they show up as thumbnails even when viewing in windows explorer. But not now. ANyone know how to make cbr and cbz files show thumbnails in windows explorer?

Answer:How to make cbr and cbz files show thumbnails?

Do you have many comic books? If not, changing the extensions to rar, then extracting the cover file and naming that file the same as the comic book name will handle it. If you have extensive collections of comics, then you're probably out of luck because this is an on-going issue with comic readers. Many developers are working on this issue and I am myself waiting for them to release updates that would show the cover thumbnail...no fix yet as far as I'm aware of, although this is a low priority thing for me so I've not checked on it lately.

Thumbnail icons for any picture and video file won't appear at first until I change what to view them as, and when I do, the icons are blurry. It also won't let me use my personal image files to be set as my desktop wallpaper. Had this problem for a while, since I had to adjust my registry to fix a sound problem.

Answer:Thumbnails won't show and desktop background won't appear

Try this it might fix the Thumbnail problem.Go to Start-> Control Panel -> Folder OptionsUnder the General tab make sure the "Show preview and filters" is checked.Under the View tab make sure the "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is unchecked and the "Display file icon on thumbnails" is checked.Check out the link below for fixing the desktop background.http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/107383-d...ent-change.html

Hey all,

Another minor, non-life-threatening irritation:

Running Windows XP Home Edition on a PC, "5.1.2600 Service Pack 1 Build 2600".

When i browse my folders on Thumbnails view, Windows seems to assign *random* pictures from throughout my hard drive to act as the thumbnail for some folders. Actually it's not totally random; when i assign a picture to act as the thumbnail for one folder, it works fine, but then a week or so later i will find that windows has used that picture as the thumbnail for some other completely unrelated folder, elsewhere on the hard drive.

I can easily fix this by right-clicking on the folder and going to:

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Choose Picture/Restore Default.

Often, that doesn't work: The properties screen will tell me that the default has been restored, for example, but when i actually look at the folder again, it hasn't actually changed anything.

But then, that problem can be solved by going to

Properties -> Customize (tab) -> Change Icon.

...and re-selecting the icon that was already supposedly being used by that folder. That usually solves the problem.

This is mildly annoying, and if anyone knows a permanent fix, i'd appreciate it. But the main problem I wanted help for was for the "My Documents" folders.

The fix given above will not work for "My Documents", "My Music", "My Pictures", "My Videos", because the properties screens f... Read more

Hi all, hope you can help. Ok, in Windows 7, when changing the desktop pic, you could see thumbnails of the pics you wanted to select. I have fixed this in windows 10, all well and good, BUT, I now have thumbnails of pics on my desktop that previously were just icons. I'd rather have just icons on my destop not thumbs. So, is it possible to have different views for diffeent parts of the computer - ala Windows 7? Or is my choice, ALL icons / ALL thumbnails?

My files and folders keep appearing as 'tiles' in the window. I want them all to appear as thumbnails.

In Control Panel, Folder Options - View - Folder Views - "Apply to all folders" is greyed out.

Every time I manually click on the Thumbnails option when I open My Documents or My Pictures from an application, next time it again opens as Tiles.

Hi, I'm using Windows 8.1 x64.

In the MUSIC folder I have 1 folder for each artist. In each Artist folder I have 1 folder for each Album. And in each Album folder I have all the songs, with the cover art embedded in them, in every single .mp3 I have.

In folder options I've set folders to show thumbnails, not icon. So, each Album folder's icon is the album art of the .mp3 files it has inside. BUT in the MUSIC folder, all the Artist folders don't show the album arts they have inside. Their icon is not a folder's icon neither, it's like thumbnails of folders:
And I'd like them to show the thumbnails of the albums they have inside. Well, the maximum amount of images that a folder icon can show is 2, so if I have more than 1 album in an Artist folder, then the icon should be 2 random thumbnails (of 2 albums).

An example here:

I put a song (with embedded cover art) in the desktop. The archive's icon is the cover art.

Now I create a NEW FOLDER (the icon is a default folder icon) called "Album". I put there the .mp3 file. Now, the "Album" folder's icon is the cover art of the .mp3 file.

Then I create ANOTHER new folder called "Artist" (default folder icon), and I put there the "Album" folder. And here, the "Artist" folder's icon is NOT the cover art, but the icon of the image above, and I want it to show the cover art.

Notice that all album's folders have only .mp3 files, not hidden images like "folder.jpg" or anyth... Read more

Ever since Microsoft OneDrive updated to Version 2017 (Build 17.3.7059.0930), all my PDF files that I have stored show thumbnails which never happened before. Great.

However, all my ICO (*.ico) files no longer show thumbnails after they are synched like they used to. Here is a screenshot I took showing the new icons I saved yesterday (which haven't been synched) and older ones that are synched.

How do I get my icon thumbnails back?

What I've already done:

Rebuild icon cache (Go to C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer; delete all iconcache_*.db files)Icrease size of icon cache (Regedit; KEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer; New String Value "Max cached icons"; Set to 8MB "8192")

Answer:Show windows previews (thumbnails) in Vista

Do your other programs (such as IE or Firefox) have a transparent title bar (where the minimize, maximize, and close buttons are) when not maximized? If not, and its just a light blue, then you probably don't have Windows Aero running. Windows Aero is the "Eye Candy" for Vista, some older programs need this disabled to run properly. For instructions on how to enable Aero, try these:

Just got my new/used laptop online, started installing all the "stuff" like
Firefox and all the security apps listed on this board - making a duplicate
of the setup on my desktop that's worked so well - thanks to the folks on
this site! I've got XP Pro sp2, latest Firefox and latest other app's listed
below.

Anyway, I've installed Firefox - so far so good, AVG Free and AVG Spyware,
Spyblocker and NoScript. Have also added things like Flash Player, Real Player,
Java console, etc.

Now, when I get on the internet in a variety of places, thumbnails and numerous icons don't show - i.e. when I get an email (thru Excite) instead of the thumbnail or the actual picture if it's embedded in the message, I get a small icon that I have to click on to open the picture, etc.

Another example is on eBay - none of the thumbnails and many other little things on any eBay page don't open - they also have to be clicked and opened on a separate page.

I've looked till I'm blue in the face and can't find any setting in anything that looks like it would fix that. i.e. on eBay, I made sure all the scripts are allowed, AdBlocker is turned off for eBay, etc. Looked thru all the Options on FireFox, can't find anything. I've got the same programs on my desktop but never did have that problem on it.

Appreciate any tips and where to look to turn off (or on?) whatever it is.

Hi - I hope someone can help

When I look at my phone image files through my laptop via USB MTP using Windows10 I can see some file thumbnails as images (those from the DCIM Android folders - DCM images and other JPG images transferred to my phone from my camera) but other folders e.g. the Aviary folder, or other third party app adjusted photos, or Whats App images (in IMG format or videos) all show as the generic icon rather than thumbnail image (weirdly there's one out of hundreds of Whats App files that shows as an image (????!!!!). Hey,

I'm running out of ideas. All of my icons dissapeared yesterday for some unknown reason. On desktop there is just blank space where they should be, only the text description of each shortcut or file remains. No icons are showing in explorer either. The only place where I can see them is the start menu. Also the iconcache.db file is nowhere to be found.

What I've tried so far:
-fixing it with the .bat that should force windows to rebuild the file
-rebuilding the file with command prompt
-reverting windows to eariler date
-uninstalling yesterday's update (which couldn't be done btw., but reverting to last working state got rid of it apparently)
-done a complete scan for viruses and malware (nothing found)
-running the system file checker in cmd (it found some corrupted files and fixed them, but according to log nothing even remotly connected to icons or thumbnails)
-during all of that restarted pc probably 50 times just to be sure.

and that's about it. Any ideas what to try next? (aside from the obvious answer - reinstall windows)

Answer:Icons and thumbnails dissapeared

Perhaps try to make a new user and see, if the problem is system wide or user dependent. Otherwise I have no idea, but must be stressful.

Hi there

There are a few free get arounds but these don't seem to work reliably.

64 bit systems particularly give problems -- Adobe stopped the psd file thumbnail integration with Windows (File) explorer a while ago.

A 15 USD solution is available -- normally I always try and find free stuff but if you are doing a LOT of photoshop work with psd files then this seems to me a worthwhile investment. Works with W8 64 bit systems too.

so when windows start to make thumbnails it can take some time and
it's quite irritating.

i've noticed, that it only happens when i restart, so when the thumbnails are created they probably stores at some location and after restart they are deleted.

is there a way to save those thumbnails or previews so when i access specific folders they will show right away with no delays?

Answer:Saving thumbnails or icons.

Sounds like you have some software the runs either on startup or shutdown that is cleaning these things out. Windows by default doesn't delete these things. Unless maybe there is a size limitation of the cache I'm not sure.

Thumbnail Caches are here: C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer

Icon Cache would be here: C:\Users\Logic\AppData\Local\IconCache.db

File/folder view...is determined by the options set for each respective folder/directory/drive.If you move a file from a folder where the selected option is Thumbnail...to a folder/directory where the selected/default option is Icon, you will get what you describe. If you want to change the view option for that folder/directory, then you can do that.If you want all the options for every folder/file to be the same (I don't recommend this), you can also set this up.http://support.microsoft.com/kb/812003Louis

And one other thing, some photos print blank when this happens. On two different printers. I'll get to that later, looked this up on google and it pointed me here but the thread it pointed two is over 475 days old. And I'm a big rare fan of Vista, but had to reinstall awhile back because of an update (Microsoft Sent me a 2 disc copy replacement SP2, not sure why they included the 64 bit version but oh well.)
I tend to hibernate my computer at night but eventually my thumbnails go missing and so do my icons eventually.... not showing the thumbnails. Little adult in nature.
Usually my best bet is to do a control alt delete and shut down explorer and start a new task and another explorer. But this is getting annoying. Attaching a couple of examples.

Usually when this happens when I print a photo of say a celeb pic, it prints blank. Both on the Canon MP530 with ink and the Olympus P-10 via a thermal print (which isn't cool when both turn up blank. 100 prints for $40 isn't cheap. Any ideas? I've been running Windows Vista Biz since May 2007 and up till about a month ago this started happening (about 2 months after reinstalling.)

Answer:Dissapearing Icons and Thumbnails

Since this happened a couple of months after you did a re-install. I would do another re-install with all applicable updates. That would eliminate half of a the possible problems.

The Problem(s):
My computer recently lost the ability to display both the "file type icons" (showing AVI, FLV, MKV, etc.) in the icon view and "thumbnails" in the thumbnail view of all my video files located on my hard drive (C drive). Additionally (and separately), the video files located on my external hard drive WILL display the "Thumbnail" without a problem BUT WILL NOT display the icon as it once did either. Instead it displays a blank generic system icon for all my video files, no matter the "view". This is what it looks like:

The Icon Itself (showing on my external and C drive):
The "Icon" File View (w/ file names redacted) (showing on my external and C drive):

The "Thumbnail" File View (w/ file names redacted) (showing on my C drive):
Here's what I would like to know:

1. How can I restore (or whatever) my computer's ability to display "File TYPE Icons" (such as AVI, FLV, MKV, etc) as it once did, preferably w/o having to perform an entire system restore?

2. How can I restore my computer's ability to display "Photo thumbnails" of each video when viewed in "Thumbnail View"?

3. And if I'm not PUSHING it by asking this, I'd also like to be able to "CHOOSE" the program my video files associate with in order to display "File Type Icons". For example I prefer "GOM Players" icon style when displaying my icons.

For some unknown reason my XP all of a sudden decided to stop showing thumbnails in myPictures and when I click on Slide Show all I get is a polite "ping". I have tried re-setting folder views and everything else I could think of but I still have icons instead of thumbnails of my pictures and it will not show a slide show.

If I had hair I would be tearing it out. Any help out there

Glenn

PC slowed to a crawl so I suspected malware/virus. I used Spybot S&D which didn't help. Found and used Malwarebytes and CCleaner which did seem to work. I realized though, my .jpegs on the desktop wouldn't open but others in My Docs did. Now it seems all .jpg and .pdf files don't open. I can still see thumbnails which leads me to believe there is still something there - encryption maybe? Anyways I realize I may have already gone too far without guidance, please help. Thanks in advance, Jim.

Hello BC,

{Running Vista Home Basic 32 bit SP1}

I have a really irritating issue. I had a trojan back in AUgust and after removing it completely, my background pic stopped showing up. But it turns out the trojan wasn't completely removed. So after getting rid of it 100% for sure, only certain pics will show up as a background. My jpg pic of Gym Class Heroes wont show up but my jpg of Marilyn Monroe will. Also, thumbnails of pics wont show up in folders. On my desktop they will though. After a bit of searching, I found that lots of people have had a similar problem. Help me!

*New development*
I was trying to show my issue to someone and tried changing my background to Gym Class from Marilyn and back again... Marilyn wont show up now either!

Hello,

I have a lot of files on my computer, and have been noticing that when I look in a folder, often times the files are showing with icons. I prefer to have this set to the list view. Anyone know where to change this?

Thanks,

I had Windows Vista since last year and everything was fine. Yesterday, my icons/thumbnails on the internet disappeared and show a box with symbols. I can tell what the box says when I scroll over but how do I get the icons back. I restored the firewall to its default setting and the icons came back but now they're gone again. Please help.

I'm not quite sure how this keeps happening, something to do with explorer.exe I presume. But my icons keep going invisible and some just go blank, as in just white. Example below:

Also my favourite links when I open up explorer.exe are gone, just seems to be constantly trying to load but never completes

I have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:

Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.

I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.

But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.

Answer:Explorer showing Icons instead of thumbnails....

Hello Dave,

You might double check through each option in the tutorial below to see if it may help. It's for Windows 7, but it's the same in Windows 8 except "Windows Explorer" is "File Explorer" in OPITION FOUR instead.

Hope this helps,

When ever I open a folder with many files it takes a while to open or the icons/thumbnails take a long time to generate and in task manager it can be seen that msmpeng.exe is using a core of my cpu @ 100% level. disabling MSE fixes the problem. i've no other anti malware/security application. just MSE and windows firewall. i installed malware bytes now to verify that my system has no spyware though (came clean). windows defender is disabled.

this problem is easily replicated with my downloads from firefox folder (problem is most obvious with this folder) and for a strange reason the stalker call of pripyat benchmark application installer. i'm facing this issue regardless of version - 1611, 1959 & 1961.

this is a clean installation of windows. formatted it just the day before. all windows updates applied too.

Answer:MSE slow display of icons and thumbnails

I also noticed the same thing with a folder I store downloaded ***.exe programs.
When I open this folder, the small icons take 20 seconds to load. This is definitely an MSE bug of some sort and has been reported to MS and they are aware of it.

Is it possible to show folders as icons in Windows Explorer rather than thumbnails while still having images and videos shown as thumbnails?

Answer:Folders as icons, pictures as thumbnails

I wish.

I'm sure there's some way to do this, but I don't know how. I've been looking for a way to do this for years (since the days of Windows Vista).
