Change PC Settings Based on Location

Question: Change PC Settings Based on Location

I'm curious if it is possible to change Windows settings based on my laptop's location. What I would like is a few settings (GPOs) to change based on whether I am at home vs anywhere else.

I'm guessing that detecting the wireless/wired network I'm connected to, or looking for a server or specific piece of hardware (laptop dock) are the best ways to reliably determine the laptop's location. I'd prefer not to set up a Windows domain at home, however I'd imagine it would make it easier to accomplish what I'm trying to do.

I would prefer a native solution, however third party programs, scripting or programming is acceptable. I'm using Win 10 Pro x64.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi is there anyway to automatically switch power setting based on my location. Say if I'm connected to my home network be in high performance mode. Or perhaps a program that does this? If not does anyone know how I might go about creating one ( I'm a computer science student) thanks, Laurie

Answer:change power settings based on location

I have two desktops (work and home) with more than one screen, on these computers, I would like my start menu on the far right side of the right screen.

However, on computers with only screen (my laptop), I would like my start menu along the bottom.

Is there any way to set up an IF statement that places the start menu in a location based on the number of screens or, worst case, stop that property from updating across computers?

Say you want the computer automatically to go into Power Saver mode at night, High Performance during 9-5pm hours, and then Balanced at other times. Is there a way to do this?

It might be doable using task scheduler and the powercfg command, but the main issue with that is if you computer is sleeping, it probably won't execute the command to take it out of sleep.

Send me your ideas and comments.

Answer:Change power settings based on a schedule?

if your computer is sleeping, then I dont think it matters which power mode it is in. Otherwise, this is a good Idea and I am interested as well if anyone finds a setup.

Hi,I have 3 accounts on XP SP2 and want to change the default location of the documents & settings folders.I've used Tweak XP UI to change the My Docs, My Music etc fro all 3 accounts to the F drive, but can't move the shared docs (or the rest of the documents & settings folder. Is this possible? If so can anyone point me in th right direction.Thanks.

Answer:change location of documents & settings

Per Microsoft:NOTE: This method relocates key Windows components. Use this method only if you require the "Documents and Settings" folder to be moved or renamed and you cannot use the Unattend.txt file to change the name during installation. To specify a different folder for the entire "Documents and Settings" folder, including key system components, follow these steps: 1. Log on to the computer as an administrator.2. Create a new folder.3. Open the current "Documents and Settings" folder.4. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.5. Under Advanced settings click Show hidden files and folders, and then click to clear the Hide file extensions for known file types and Hide protected operating system files check boxes.6. Click OK.7. Click and drag to copy all the folders to the new folder, except for the currently logged on users folder.8. In Control Panel, double-click System, and then click the User Profiles tab.9. Copy the current user's profile to the new folder.10. Click OK, close Control Panel, and then log off and log on to the computer as an administrator again.11. In Registry Editor, click Find on the Edit menu.12. Type documents and settings, and then click Find.13. Replace the value data or rename the value or registry key to the new path for each and every registry key and value that contains the original path.NOTE: You must complete this change for every instance in the registry or your computer may not start. I am using windows 7 and would like to separate system and programme files from documents etc to assist with backups and also restoring windows if required. I would like to keep my documents files in another partition from the C drive. I have read that this can be done by changing the file location in my documents. Do you know how do I do the same thing for all the other personal files like windows live mail folders and internet explorer files etc please? Or, is there a better way of getting personal information onto another drive?ThanksBroooz

Answer:Change location for documents and settings files

Theres no point in having your files on a seperate partition,if your drive dies,so do your files.Personely i think an external drive is the answer, others may know better of course.

I'm thinking about trying Thunderbird; but, I have a question about where it stores user mail and settings. My user data, including mail and mail account settings, is stored on drive D for ease and simplicity when backing up user data. I can't find anything in the Thunderbird documentation that tells me how to set Thunderbird to store data at a different user-preferred location.

During the installation of Thunderbird just a few minutes ago, I told it to import settings from Eudora; but, I found later it had moved all my mail and user settings from drive D to drive C into the Users folder. This is unacceptable.

How do I change that?

I followed the tutorial Documents Folder - Move Location in Windows 10 to move my Documents folder to a separate partition. Did the same thing for my Music, Pictures and Video folders. Everything worked great.

Nevertheless, the Win10 Settings app at Settings > Storage > Change where new content is saved still thinks the default location is in the C: drive. I know this is wrong because my user files are being saved to their new location, as expected.

Why does the Settings app still show the original location - or perhaps I overlooked something?

Hi,
I just build up a new pc and changed from W7 to new era of W10 :-) Was not that easy and pleasant experience as I thought.
I have huge storage capability with this new pc but since I'm using very fast Intel 512Gb 600p M.2 SSD as C drive, I also want to make sure that all of my self created data will be stored to another disk, let's call it D.
After extensive research, I found out that there are so many different guides how to change user folder locations for the following user folders (music, downloads, documents, pictures and videos) as well for changing the Windows 10 storage settings. All those guides are a bit confusing to me since I'm not ICT pro...

I already know that one can change the individual user folders (mentioned above) by just changing its location from folder preferencies. Here is a pic where we can see that I have already changed the location for the following user folders; pictures, downloads, music, document, favourites, and saved games). User folders Search, links, onedrive, desktop and contacts are still in C drive.
I have not yet made any changes to W10 Storage settings as they remain default (C drive). If I have understood right by changing the storage settings in Windows it would lead to situation that W0 creates another library but user folders would still remain on C disk as default. This would lead to situation that user would have multiple storage locations. Am I correct?

I thanked him saying I hope the party back in Finland was OK.

OK, that being said, I have to say that you are wrong : The procedure to use Sysprep to relocate Users folder is really simple; it's just that because the procedure is not known by average users that I have tried to make the tutorial as complete and comprehensive as possible. Reading it through, doing it exactly as told requires no technical skills or specific PC knowledge. The procedure is designed by Microsoft and is done using native Windows tool Sysprep.

It is the only valid method to relocate absolutely every file and folder (including system folders like Temp, AppData and so on) in various user folders to another drive. When done on an existing system it relocates all existing user profiles, and then as when done on new installation Windows locates all future new user profiles to drive you have selected.

I do recommend using Method One, clean installing Windows and doing the relocation while installing. However, if you go for Method Two, relocating Users on an existing Windows installation, please watch this video from the beginning of Method Two:

Geolocation, the retrieval of a connecting user's location in the world, can be beneficial to both user and website operator. When you connect o a weather website for instance, it is often the case that you want weather information for the location you are at.

It can also be comfortable to be redirected to a country-specific version of a website.

Sometimes however, geolocation can backfire. This can be the case if you want to look up weather information for another location, if you don't want to be redirected automatically, or if the location that the service discovers is incorrect.

Privacy is usually not part of the problem and the main reason for that is that browsers such as Firefox display prompts before websites may access your location. Then again, if you allow it you may dislike that it can pinpoint your location precisely.

Location Guard is a relative new extension for the Firefox web browser that can be configured individually for each domain you visit that wants to access location-based features.

It offers two main features: the first enables you to add noise to your location so that it cannot be pinpointed with accuracy anymore. The second feature on the other hand sets your location to any place in the world.

The preferences are automatically loaded after installation. Here you can select to increase or decrease the accuracy of the location sensor. At its least accurate level, its accuracy is 7116 meters which means that it will be up to 7116 met... Read more

Hello- I have looked everywhere for a solution to the location based printing problem. Having upgraded from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 10 pro some time ago, the ability to have my default printer automatically change based on the network I was on was available and the only reason I needed the Pro versions. Perfect for moving my laptop from home to work and not have to choose my printer each time. After the big cumulative Windows 10 upgrade, that feature went away to be replaced by something really useless- making your default printer the last printer used. Doesn't help me when I change locations. Does anyone have a solution or option for this? It seem like it would have been easy to keep that great feature. I hope I'm explaining this correctly but I have seen nothing on searches to address the problem. Thanks in advance.

Please Rob Me Demonstrates The Dangers Of Location Based Services
Location based services can be helpful to the user, no question about that. They are most often implemented and used in mobile devices who are able to return the location of the owner to the network where these information can get utilized in several ways from locating the nearest post office, restaurant or atm to locating a friend or object.
But these location based services can also pose a threat, especially if they are linked with social networking sites and public status information.

Hey guys,

Windows 7 had a feature where windows would select your default printer based on which network you are logged onto.

I cannot seem to find this feature in windows 10 for the life of me.

Has it been removed? I'm hoping it hasn't or there is at least some kind of registry hack to bring it back. What they seemed to have replaced this feature with "last printer used turns into default printer" is absolutely useless in my opinion. I can think of very few scenarios where that is actually helpful.

Hey all,
I have a problem with cortana and it's location based reminders: They won't work anymore since the anniversary update on Windows Mobile.
I guess I have tracked down the issue: If I look up in the position settings of Windows Mobile I see some options like "location service" and "location symbol" (I use a german phone, so the translation could be wrong) aand I see "location history" (Positionsverlauf). "If the location history is activated blahblah" but I do not have a slider to activate or deactivate it. Why this is important (i guess)?
Because if I scroll down to the apps which are allowed to use my location I see Cortana greyed out and right under it it says "The location history has to be activated to use Cortana" (Der Positionsverlauf muss zur Verwendung von Cortana aktivert sein.)
All other reminders work like a charm, only the location based reminders won't work. Has anyone an Idea how to fix that?
Here are some screenshots (unfortunately in german) that may help?

I've got a print server and about 7 different depts with various printers.

I'd like when a user logs into a PC to auto map the correct printer by dept. My computers are named by the department they are in. For example a computer in accounting could be ACCT01, ACCT02 and so on.

My idea was using the login script.

IF %computername%==ACCT (install accounting printer)
IF %computername%==HR (install HR printer)

The problem is IF command compares the entire string. So ACCT01 returns a false value. I need to able to pull just the ACCT from the %computername% variable.

I'm open to anything!

Answer:Auto install printer based upon location / Dept

As above, if a user opens say a Word document which is an attachment on a web-based mail system like hotmail or outlook live and the user then just clicks SAVE, the document is saved to a temporary location.

We have lots of users who are doing this and then finding that they have lost there work etc as they have assumed it was saving to a network drive or even back to the attachment (yes I know thats wrong, but students don't always know till its too late).

So my question is, is there any way of getting Word to prompt them to save the document to somewhere when they click SAVE, rather than save it in a temp area under the temporary files area on the C: drive???

Is it possible to do with a Group Policy setting or any other way round not saving the doc in temp area and forcing the user to choose the location.

Maybe the equivalent to what the SAVE AS function does...

Hope that makes sense.

Answer:Opening attachments from Web-based Email are saved in Temp location...

which version of Word are you using?
Incidentally, here is how you fill out your system specs:
Update your SevenForums System Specs
User CP (located on the top menu bar) |
Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

Add the word laptop or desktop or netbook to the
“system manufacturer” block, for example,
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

Hi everyone,

Scenario 1 (currently working): I wrote the below macro in order to change D4 and D5 to blank when the D3 selection (drop down selection) is changed. Since these cell are linked, when the D3 dropdown changes the users will be forced to make a new selection from D4 and D5.

Here is the code that is working right now for scenario 1:

Having uninstalled a faulty software I foolishly deleted the shared files which it said were not in use. The next 5 days were spent in safe mode, which I couldn't leave, despite several system restores, with a persistent error message that NAV Auto-protect could not initialise engine database files. Eventually, with the aid of Symantec support, all was restored to normal, and is now working, but 1. when I play spider solitaire the cards are only half the size, and 2. in Calendar a week now occupies only half the screen. It used to fill the screen. I am using Windows ME and MS Works Suite 2001. I have succeeded in restoring the desktop but not these. Somebody please help.Arrow.

Answer:location of settings

Navigate to the required program (via start/programs/games/spider solitar) and right click on it. Select Properties and on the shortcut tab select Normal Window, this hopefully will give you a full screen of the program.

I posted in this forum as I feel this is security related. Mods move if need be.

I'm looking for a web based (preferably PHP) change log program. It should do the following:

1. Be simple!
2. Allow people to enter descriptions of basic system changes
3. Changes should have categories by systems and can be filtered as such.
4. Time stamp the actions and have a "master display" where all changes can be viewed
5. LDAP authentication would be nice.

Does such a thing exist? My goggling has failed due to "change log" being such a popular term.

See attached screenshot.    Anyone else experiencing this? I have updated Windows and all the drivers, also tried uninstalling the settings app and reinstalling, but that did not help either. Hope someone can help.. -- Christian

View From the Home Button. Oddly enough, I can still open paint, though I have to do so via right clicking on a picture. Clearly they exist, but whenever I click on them and attempt to open them directly, nothing happens. Another issue I have is that the lock screen is stuck on one picture. I cannot change this picture, instead, when I try to change it, the loading wheel spins indefinately like so. If there is any solution to either of these issues please contact me as soon as you can. As you can imagine it's a little bit annoying having battery saver mode stuck on so I can't charge more than 60% for road trips. EDIT: I should also note that this is a Y50-70 I am using

There is a software which often changes the proxy settings so I decided to config the internet settings registry right to reject the proxy settings. But When I decided to delete this software and return the rights back, I suddenly found that I can not change
the proxy settings manually!
The detail is that I change the auto proxy url, to let my pc use a pac file and I don't want any softwares to change. However, when I decided to give the rights back and try to change the url back, it never success, and even the same when i'm sure I have
cleared this url in the whole registry, but it back, as it never changes!
I check the registry rights twice or more to make sure that the rights has given back, just like it originally should be. But it never works.
So the result is I have to clear and reinstall the WINDOWS 10 AGAIN!
Never should you save such information both in registry and somewhere I don't know! Or you should let these stuffs out of the ** registry!

Basically I am trying to conditional format in Excel a cell -say A40 with text in it which should say "Net Profit" if the value in Cell D40 is greater than zero and the text in A40 should automatically change to "Net (Loss)" if the value in D40 changes to less than zero. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Answer:How to change text in a cell based on value i

First, some terminology...Conditional formatting is used to change the format of a cell when the specified condition(s) is(are) TRUE. Thus the name Conditional formatting. You are asking for the contents (not the format) of the cell to change based on the value in another cell. That is done with a basic IF function, which you can find in the Excel Help files. However, you left out a condition. You didn't tell us what you want to display if D40 equals 0 - assuming that that is possible. What should be displayed in A40 if D40 = 0?Click Here Before Posting Data or VBA Code ---> How To Post Data or Code.

I've been really annoyed with the regenerating Searches and Favorites folders that pop up under my user, and I saw that one potential fix of it was to click under Location and move it to somewhere else.

Well...I chose Temp. I figured hey, whenever the Favorites folder regenerates, it'll be under the Temp folder, and it'll just erase itself and whatnot. Except instead, it changed the Favorites folder to Temp under user. Now, it won't let me erase it, because it says there's stuff currently active.

So I make the mistake of moving the location of THAT to OS, and now, naturally, OS is under my user and can't be removed. On top of that, Favorites has just regenerated, so now I've got the same problem I had before, except on top of it, a duplicate OS folder is located under my username.

How do I fix this? The last thing I want to do is click on the duplicate OS and "restore default" so it sends OS stuff to the Favorites folder (if it would even allow that), especially because for some stupid reason, the Temp files are being sent there now.

I don't want to just "hide" the folder, because I have it so hidden folders are shown. I don't have a backup from yesterday to restore my computer. I don't want to restore my whole computer back to factory settings. Is there anything I can do to at least put this duplicate OS safely gone, with Temp being fully restored and not in the Favorites folder, even if it means I have to keep the stupid regenerating empty ... Read more

Answer:Can't Change Location

After manually selecting all the contents of the Favorites folder (which housed some, but not all, of the temp files), and deleting them, I was able to delete the Favorites folder, but I'm pretty sure that when it regenerates, it'll be the Temp files in there rather than the empty Favorites folder.

And the more pressing issue of the OS is still hanging there. There's no option to delete (not that I would try doing that anyway) and if I click the Properties > Location for it, and then "restore default", it says to send all OS files to C:\Users\(username)\Favorites.

Does anybody know how I can fix these problems? I'd REALLY appreciate the help!

I have C660 and it is by far the most complicated laptop keyboard wise I ever had - on my previous one it was just F10 = quieter volume and F9= louder volume and on this one one has to press' FN' key + '3' or '4'.

Is there please some way to customize the key settings so I don't have to press FN key along with it, and make it be say F10 for volume instead please?

For years, I have kept most of my data on a drive/partition other than C drive. Let's call this other data drive/partition, D drive.

With the frequent install of Windows 7 builds, I started changing the location of My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music to D drive as I've done for years, but I even went ahead and mapped the location of Desktop, Favorites, Searches, etc to the D drive as well.

The benefit of this is I didn't have to physically copy/move this data before doing a clean install, I just had to go in and change the default locations to the appropriate D drive paths/locations after a clean install. This is a bit of work and is tedious, but less work than moving data, etc.

I've had my kids computer dual-booting Windows XP & Windows 7 for months as well. In Windows 7, that computer has an account for me (admin purposes) and four more accounts for our four kids. Now, imagine the tedious work of manually changing the locations for My Documents, Desktop, etc in Windows 7 for all 5 accounts on that computer.

I would like to think that there is some way of backing up the location settings for My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, Desktop, etc for each account, maybe even backup the settings for the custom Start Menus, Desktop Wallpaper, and so on.

Has anyone seen a way of backing up these settings manually, using a 3rd party utility, or using some Microsoft admin tool?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

Answer:How to backup My Documents/etc location settings

I know this might sound stupid as I may have misread you, but why don't you just have 4 folders with your kids name on them on your D drive and get them to use those folders instead of the my documents etc?

Anyway if you want it to not be so tedious, just add them to the librarys it'll only take you a second and you can just use libraries from then on.

Using win7 64 bit 1 pc upstairs and laptop down stairs,no need for file or printer sharing so its disabled.
Is it right that the public location setting is the safest setting with the sharing option disabled, and that wpa etc is not used, i have seen the wording below which seems to suggest it.
note.
If you know you won?t need to share files or printers, the safest choice is public network.

Answer:Home wireless location settings?

This is recommended as it definitely removes the option to share files or printers thereby protecting you should you use your PC in a public place and forget to do this. If you want to give yourself the option of sharing files and printers you can choose private and then just disable file and printer sharing manually.
By not using WPA etc - do you mean because you have selected WEP? The level of security is yours - WPA/WPA2 recommended which gives you extra passworded protection.

I thought maybe in the parent's desktop.ini but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Dell Optiplex 980 SFF
Intel core 2 duo 660 3.3, 64bit
BIOS version A 16 (latest) and reset defaults.
W7 pro

I bought this Optiplex refurb on ebay and it works pretty good with 4 gigs of DDR3-12800 ram. After removing the old memory I installed 8gb Patriot Signature series (2x4)and it works better and shaved a few seconds off boot time. Now I need to set the timing but I cannot find the settings.

I've set the timing on other computers (mostly with Asus motherboards). I've searched the BIOS over and over and Googled everything I could think of but nobody ever mentions where the settings can be located. I've checked the Dell tech and user manuals until I have sensory overload but still no luck.

Since this was a business computer could they have eliminated the ability to tamper with the memory settings?

Anyway, if someone would be kind enough to just steer me in the right direction so I can ascertain if they actually exist I would be most appreciative.

Answer:Can't find Dell ram settings location

most oem computers such as dell, hp they do not let you change the ram timings usually the bios features are locked and not like asus, msi motherboards bios where you can change timings and stuff.

I have an ongoing annoyance, which I've had through all Windows versions from XP or maybe Vista onwards, in that although I can individually set the volume level of each program that makes any sounds, all those volume settings are wiped out and reverted to the much unwanted default level every time the Realtek High Definition Audio driver is updated. So, I'm naturally wanting to backup the settings and then restore them each time they've got reverted to default.

So, could any nice person here tell me where those volume mixer settings are stored? -- Many thanks.

Answer:Location of volume mixer settings...?

Edit: I just found the utility in the link below. I think I may use it myself:

Perhaps someone knows. In the meantime an angle of attack could be take a snapshot of the Registry. Change the volume settings. Take another snapshot and see what changed.

Is it possibly the Anniversary Update, which has blocked my possibilities to change the Lock Screen configuration? Hi I have been seeing settings change on their own and cannot nail down the cause. The thing I noticed that is ongoing lately is that Internet Options gain custom settings for Trusted Sites and Local Intranet (I am not on a domain, do not connect to work or school, do not manage my computer remotely, do not send print orders from a phone, etc.)The system seems to run too many resources at times. And I get error messages that don't seem to match the environment (looks to me like an error from trying to connect to work etc)Here are my logs. In the next post I will add 2 extra and explain why. https://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/process.pl?o=1572815 says it can't understand my new update but there could be something wrong. "Detected potential protocol hijack" in a couple places and this would not surprise me. It also wouldn't surprise me if there were something with the way OneDrive is configured on my machine. It also says it's safe to remove lms.exe ; I always thought there was part of the Intel ME that I could take off and it would be ok, and if this is true I'll be happy to see it go. I'm not opposed to reinstalling Windows, but they don't give you reinstallation media any more with purchase, and I am not sure I can concentrate through the process without a lot of help.

Answer:Internet Options settings change on own--to custom settings

I guess I don't necessarily have to include more logs, just I thought some of the extensions shown in the logs (which don't actually show to me in the browser) seemed to not match up. And because there seems to be something wrong with my imageres.dll files. If it's just that the Windows 7 sector (no I don't know what that is doing; it was already Windows 10 when I bought it) doesn't work it's not an issue, but I've in the past had Restore and Factory Reset stop working, and if this is happening again I need to work out how to fix it. (and prevent it).

Hello there

I just installed Win 10 upgrade from Windows 7 on my computer and I am having some problems to modify system settings regarding pen and touch, specially "Flicks" settings, that I need to disable to have a better performance using a Wacom tablet.

When I go to Pen and Touch>Flicks Windows says I can?t change settings since those are managed by the OS admin, but my profile has admin rights....

So, I decided to enable the Administrator account, to see if using it would fix the issue, but the Administrator account still shows the same problem, with the OS giving the same message.

I even went to settings to restore the PC to default to see if it was not some installation error, but the problem still persists, since even after restoring Windows with no apps installed the OS still gives me the same message.

I saw some people having issues related with that message when trying to change Windows Update settings, and they were able to use a workaround with group policy settings so they could do whatever they need with group policy editor, but I didn't find anything related to the Flick settings there, and even so, I prefer a solution that fix / allows me to make changes on settings, specially those related to pen and touch stuff, that are my really new trouble using Windows 10.

So anyone has any idea how to fix this or at least a way that I can disable everything in Flicks with gpedit ?

Tks

Hi everyone, thanks for looking.
Im running into a particular problem that I cant seem to find the reasons or the settings.

I watch HBO GO (i have a valid subscription) on my Windows 7 Home laptop and use an HDMI cable to connect my TV.

Scenerio 1:
If I leave the close the lid power option on hibernate, I must leave the laptop open and, when I connect the HDMI the TV, it becomes my monitor and I view as the monitor and watch anything full screen no problem.

Scenerio 2:
I change the power option on the lid close to "do nothing". When the HDMI cable is hooked up, if the laptop is open it uses the laptop display, if its closed it displays through the HDMI/TV. This is perfect and exactly what I want.
I can watch as the monitor no problem HOWEVER, if I choose full screen, I get gray borders and the "Full Screen" is not full and just centered.

I can not for the life of me figure out why and Im going crazy.
Does anyone know why the power option would have an effect on this and what settings I could change?

Many Thanks in Advance!!!

Max

Answer:External display settings change when Power options change?

Check to see what resolution your laptop's display is at, what the external TV resolution is when you connect it to your laptop, and MAYBE what resolution the videos you're watching are. This just sounds like a resolution issue. If the TV is at a larger resolution than your laptop's resolution, change the TV's resolution to the size your laptop is at. Then try watching a video to see what happens. Hope this helps.

Hi, I want to assign a custom icon to every file type no matter what the associated app is. I can change individual default icons, but they get overwritten by the application icon. Is it possible to do this :

Hello
I am running win 7 and and I've noticed that the folder columns change based on the content of the folders. For example, when I'm looking at a folder with documents in it, I have the following columns:
Name
Date Modified
Type
Size

When I go into a folder with mp3s:
Name
Track number
Title
Contributing artists
Album

For pictures:
Name
size
type
date
date modified

I'd like to have all folders have the same columns no matter what files are in it. I've tried using Tools->folder options->view-> apply to folders button, but it does not fix the issue. Any way to change it for all folders?
Thanks

Hello,

I have written a bit of code and I am on the very last portion. I am attempting to re-create a manual process whereby the values on the 'Total' rows have to be A negative number for reconciliation. I am not sure what the best method is to accomplish this task.
Code:
Sub changetonegative()
Dim neg As Integer
neg = -1

lasttotal = Cells.Rows(Count, "a").End(xlUp).Row

For i = 1 To lasttotal

Hi I have two workbooks. The first one has a range of cells with months formatted as 'mmm'. What is the best way to change cell colors based on a cell color (Not a number)?

I have a condition where a cell may have green background (conditional formatting), and on the next update, a different cell may have the green background (same condition, but not the same cell). I would like several cells in that column to change to the same color when this happens, they will be different rows, but will be on the same row as the change occurs ... it is dynamic.
*********
Condition 1:

G8 background color is = green

Change adjoining cells to the right and down to the same color
(H8:K8 and G9:K12) The inclusive range would be (G8:K12)
********
Condition 2 on update:

G8 is back to normal but H8 is now green

Cells in column G are back to normal but adjoing cells to the right and down should now be green.
(I8:K8 and H9:K12) The inclusive range would be H8:K12)
*******
Here is an example of the conditions above.

Condition 1
Row G H I J K
8 20 22 33 32 35
9
10 24% 15% 22% 21% 25%
11 80 82 90 88 89
12 44% 45% 48% 47% 50%

Condition 2
Row
8 22 33 32 35 38
9
10 15% 22% 21% 25% 27%
11 82 90 88 89 90
12 45% 48% 47% 50% 52%

The cells I want to highlight will not be of the same value and there are formulae in every cell.

Thanks
I haven't got the hang of copying the cells from Excel to the post. sorry about the formatting.

Answer:Change Range Cell Color Based on Another

In (nearly) simplest terms, and assuming from what you say that there'll NEVER be a time when G8 AND H8 are BOTH green, then

If Range("G8").Interior.ColorIndex = 10 Then
Range("G8:K12").Interior.ColorIndex = 10
ElseIf Range("H8").Interior.ColorIndex = 10 Then
Range("H8:K12").Interior.ColorIndex = 10
End If

You'll have to get back to us on what sheet event might fire this. & let us know if the actual cond formatting (a) blocks the code and/or (b) remains intact.

Rgds,
Andy

Hi all.

I've just upgraded to a PC with XP Media Centre Edition and Since my intention was always to use the primary HD to store the OS and main programs and a 2nd HD to use as a Video recorder I was wondering if anyone has a clue how?

I can't see anything in the MCE setup that lets me choose where to record to so I'm assuming that it will record TV to a folder in My Documents. Can I just move My Documents to the new drive, where do I change Windows default location for different objects?

Example set up -

HD 1 - (2 partitions)
C:\ OS
D:\ Games and Music (i.e. things that won't change that often)

HD 2 - (1 partition)
E:\ Video (and in this case My Documents)

If anyone knows how to do this in normal XP then any help you can give would be great.

Cheers,

Alex

Right click and drag the "My Music" folder to it's new location and select "move". This will not only move the "My Music" folder but also the contents.

Hi there not sure if this has been posted before, I tried browsing the forums and haven't found something yet.

I am not sure if it is possible, but I am trying to look for a way to "mask" my IP address to show me located in the US rather then where I am at the moment which is Europe.

Only wish to do so in order to access the ever so growing number of US sites that are so keen on discriminating non US citizens. Its usually for trivial matters like listening to music or watching ones favourite shows that are not airing and might not ever air in Europe. So please if anyone out there has any suggestions plz let me know ^_^

Answer:Change IP to show US location?

Get some proxy server software.

iPig (http://www.iopus.com/iPig/) is a decent program that works. I'm in The Bahamas so I can relate to what you're going through.

I just finished installing Win 7 on its own drive (for the 2nd time) and on a separate partition. The problem is that I can't point "Program Files" to its partition. I watched the video by W.H. Schroeder but when i click on "Properties" for the file folder "Program Files" Win 7 does not show a "Location" tab so could change it from C: to M:. There must be a way because others have multiple partitions in Win 7 but it seems to be eluding me.

Answer:How to change LOCATION of a directory in Win 7

You can move the User folders if you want.
Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Podcasts

In fact, I would recommend do this, keeping User DATA seperate from the OS.

1) It keeps fragmentation down
2) I makes creating a system Image/Backup much faster.
3) In the even you must reinstall Windows, all of your User DATA in these folders will remain on the selected hard Drive, so you do not loose it by formating.

But you can not move "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)"
And why would you want to?

If installed programs are not with the OS and you must restore a image or backup to a time BEFORE a certain app was installed, it may no longer work.

If you re-instal Windows, those applications on the other drive may no longer work either.
You will still have to re-install them.

Installed programs should be with Windows.

If for Some reason you want an Application installed to a different drive (separate from the OS) you can simply make a Folder on that drive for those programs.
Then manually choose the install directory.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding your question here.

Recently I've reset my laptop so i could use it for my education. However, since the reset
the 'my documents' (and Pictures) user-folder at 'my PC' has been changed to the onedrive equivalent. I've tried turning off onedrive by changing my group policy, but it turned out that just removed the folders, but kept the link, resulting in a missing folder error. So i was forced to turn it back on. Is there any way for me to get the folders at 'my pc' to direct at my personal user folders?

Answer:how do i change the location of 'documents'?

Hi All

I have just changed my laptop after 10 years with my previous one. As I have done on my PC. I need to change the location of Documents, Videos, Pictures, Music and Downloads from C which is an SSD to D the HDD, now I have done this before no problem, but this time I forgot to create a folder for each one in the D before moving to the new location, using for each folder. Right click > Properties > Location > Find target > Copying the path > Paste into location box > Apply. So the download folder is the D drive not a folder in the D drive! I can not work out to reverse this and I have another folder named incorrectly and I am also unable to change this.
When I try to change the Downloads folder to the folder I created in the D drive, I get the message "The folder can't be moved here The specified path is invalid" and as I said the other one I cannot rename.
Any ideas or do I have to do some sort of system restore. Thanks

Kevin

My weather app keeps telling me the conditions & forecast for Helena, Montana. I am sure it is a wonderful place, and I am thrilled to know it is now 32 degrees F outside, however I live in New Jersey. I cannot find a "change location" function in its settings. Where does the weather app get its location info from, and how can I correct it? Thanks!

Answer:Change location in weather app.

Right-click and setting should show up on the top. Click on places and add the new location.

I'd like to change the location of My Documents, but they've removed the location tab that was present in Vista. What I'm looking to do is set the location of My Documents to E: (Western Digital 1TB My Book) as opposed to C: (Primary 150GB Hard-Drive) because of the much needed storage space.

User Folders - Change Default Location

Note: I'm using the super-admin account instead of the limited one, so I should have full access to just about everything.

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Kill3dwardDead,

No Microsoft didn't remove the Location Tab, your just clicking properties for the wrong item

Your clicking properties on the Library folder called "Documents", instead expand the library folder and click properties on the "My Documents" folder, from there you can see the location tab and change its location

Hope it helps.

Whenever I save a graphic from IE6, it defaults to the C:\My Documents\My Pictures folder. Where can I change this default? I don't want to save a zillion pictures in the folder I share with the rest of the office. The only reference in the Win98 registry is in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\Shell Extensions and I changed that but nothing happened. Anyone know what that key is for?

Hi everyone,

I'm getting tired of backing up every new Win7 Build so I thought to chuck all my data on my 2nd HDD and that way backups won't be needed.

There's only one thing...Fonts.

I want to change the default C:\Windows\Fonts Dir to D:\Fonts

I have changed the reg entry HKCU/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/WINDOWS/CURRENTVERSION/EXPLORER/SHELL FOLDERS

and restarted, but there hasn't been a change, all fonts still go to C:\Windows\Fonts.

Is there anyway of doing this?

Thanks

Answer:Change Location of Fonts Dir

I think the problem you are having is due to MS's transition to relational database friendly OS. The registry will be non-existent or minimal in future MS operating systems as a result of this transition. The configuration for the system directories is apparently one of the early parts affected.

If this is the case, I don't know how to fix it, but I know where you'll want to look. Your problem will have to do with setting the value of FOLDERID_Fonts (CSIDL_FONTS). I would venture to guess that this is set by some .msc configuration application, likely one in the system32\en-US\ folder.

Good luck

Why don't you like this procedure? It will take approximately 5 minutes to modify default location of file for these applications.

Hi, I am wondering if there is a way and where one would change it to specify the location of the .pst file for Outlook 2000? We are using email from our ISP and I would like to store the .pst file on a networked drive.

Is this possible?

Thanks,

Chad

Hi guys, new to the forum, and already need help

i just reformatted my computer i decided ill change my documents location to another drive where my stuff was backed up AKA my old documents folder. What happened was it wanted to make it so it merged the two folders together so that there wont be 2 my music, 2 my pictures, and 2 my videos. But instead of merging it deleted everything in those 3 folders, now im stuck with no music and pictures, video doesnt matter, actually my main concern is the pictures. I am running Vista Enterprise. thank you in advance

Answer:Change my documents location

You'll need to use a software to recover deleted files. You should stop using your computer till you can get hold of the software (there are many; Active Undelete is a good one) so that any of your activities do not overwrite the deleted files (when windows deletes files, it leaves the data on the drive but marks that space as free, so there is a chance of it being still there and recoverable).
Use the advanced scan feature if you're using Active Undelete, and recover the files to a different harddisk/partition that the one you're recovering from.

Hi,
I currently have my Xbox 360 connected up to my Laptop via Ethernet and I am having a problem with streaming videos and music. Everything else works fine, it connects to Xbox Live etc, and connects to the Laptop and finds the video files, it just won't play them. It gives the error:

'The connection to your computer was lost. Make sure your computer is turned on, connected to the network, and running media sharing software.

Status Code: 53-C00DF238'

I can't find much information about this error apart from one person stating that the ethernet connection to their Xbox had made itself public rather than private and could fix it by changing it to private again.

This is where I'm having a problem. The connection is showing up as an unidentified network with no internet access and as a public network. I can't figure out how to change it to a private network, there just doesn't seem to be an option.

Everything else on the laptop is working fine, my firewall is configured correctly, media player 12 is sharing correctly, the homegroup is set up etc. It just won't stream the video and the only thing I can think of now is that it needs to be a private network in order to allow streaming. I just can't change it.

I have attached a screenshot of my network & sharing centre to show you how it won't let me change the network location type.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Chris

Answer:Change Network Location for LAN?

That screenshot is showing another network on your pc unconnected. I am guessing that it is your unused onboard lan. If you never wire your pc to use a connection and only use wireless, go to the device manager and disable the onboard lan.

Make sure you have UPnP Device Host service set to auto and that it is currently running. Do that by typing services.msc in the start menu's search box.

I really don't like the suggestions of the Explore menu because it's highlighting all the ****ty autotuned rappers that pretty much plague France right now... When I go to the music.microsoft.com website this is not an issue as the suggestions seems to be rather worldwide based instead of country based... Is there a way to force Groove to change its location?
