Preferred Solution: Add more detail to the "Details Pane" in the explorer

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

File "Description" data fields etc. no longer appear in the Windows Explorer "Details" pane. Please see attachment.

Operating system is Windows Vista Home Premium, Version 6.0.6002, Service Pack 2, Build 6002.

ID3 tag data can be edited using MP3Tag editor, but is no longer available for edit in the Windows Explorer "Details" pane.

Any advice about how to restore the data fields in the Windows Explorer "Details" pane would be appreciated.

Hi all,

I have been searching the web for an answer to this question since first getting Windows 10 last year. I would like my File Explorer to open using the "List" view rather than the current default of "Details". I have seen many responses that reference how to change the default view template from Documents to Music, Pictures, ..., but none that actually address this question. Is there a way to do this at all in Win10?

I'm thinking of changing Documents template for Details to remove all columns except for Name. The Details view as it currently has been useful in the past so I hate to lose it all together.

Am I SOL in my request? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Want to change File Explorer default View from "Details" to "List"

Open File Explorer, in the menu bar click view > choose your view (mine is medium icons)

To get the menu bar (if you don't have it showing) put the cursor in the top window bar, right click, click Menu bar. On mine it's the first choice.

Hai Im new here..

Recently I was trying to add comments to movie folders so that i can keep a brief description about it when i click on it. It was easy to add comment then i had a bit trouble to get the comment getting displayed in the details pane...after playing with the registry for a while i got that solved as well.
Now I ended up with a problem where the comment being displayed eds with just some 3 or 4 words with the remaining given in dots (...) and I get a full display of it when i hover the mouse over it, which obviously goes way in 5 seconds or so.

So what i need is to find a way to expand what ever that is shown in the details pane so that it shows the entire content in consecutive lines without being restricted to one line (without having to hover a mouse)

You might get a picture of it if you have a small details pane on the right and make it show your processor details when you open thisPC.

Answer:Is there any way to show extended detail in the details pane ?

This is what i mean, if no one gets it :P

In Windows Explorer you are given the option of almost 40 details to choose from for the list view. Is it possible to add a new detail that is not on the list? For example, when setting mp3 ID3 tags in WinAmp there is a field for "Composer." It would be nice to be able to have this show up in Windows Explorer so I can sort by composer.

Answer:Is it possible to add a new "detail" to Windows Explorer?

Wouldn't that be the "artist"? But no, I haven't see that you can edit that list.

I click on the "+" beside the icon of a drive or folder near the bottom of the left pane of my Windows 7 Explorer. If the list of sub folders that opens is longer than the distance to the bottom of the pane, the lower icons become hidden. Those subfolders extend "below" the pane -- out of view. I want the contents of the pane to shift upward so that all the sub folders of interest are visible -- like on my XP computer and my win98 computer?

Is there a way that I can fix this?

I have a Windows 7 Ultimate dual booting with Windows 8 Consumer Preview on a Dell XPS 410. When I bring up Windows Explorer on the Desktop app, I would like to add several folders to the "Favorites" section of the navigation pane on the left side of the window, as I have done in Windows 7. However, I don't seem to be able to do it. I have tried dragging the folder in the right pane onto the Favorites link, as I do in Windows 7, but nothing happens; the folder is not added to the list (which, by the way, is empty.) I have also tried navigating to the folder I want to add to Favorites and then right clicking the Favorites link and selecting the option from the context menu of "add current location to favorites", but again nothing happens.

On the off chance that it might be a corrupted system file, I just finished doing a System File Checker with the SCANNOW option, but no problem was detected by SFC.

I wonder if this is a bug in the Consumer Preview? Has anybody else encountered this problem? I also would like suggestions for what else to try to correct the problem, if it seems to be a problem with my system but nobody else's...

Hi,
is this possible?
I currently have things like Favourites, Libraries, and Homegroup (all of which I don't care for). Not sure what that folder pane is actually called, so not sure what to search for.
I just want an expanded folder tree of My Computer.

Any suggestions?

Back in Win 7, "Computer" disappeared from my explorer navigation pane. Did several repair/installs, but all of them failed. Also tried the registry fix described in SevenForums, which also failed.

After upgrading to Windows 8, "Computer" is still missing from the navigation pane. Tried the registry fix described in EightForums (Computer - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane in Windows 8 Explorer), which failed in several attempts.

I realize a clean install of Win 8 is probably required to fix this, but what I'd really like to know is what has been lost in the system that prevents restoration of "Computer" in the navigation pane.

I'd be grateful for any assistance in this.

I would much prefer that. "desktop' ends up being twice in the tree, and removable media twice as well. Well, actually desktop is right inside my user folder too!

Anybody know a fix? It's impossible to search for, as all the search terms bring up much more common problems.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

This is by far the most difficult issue to explain what I see. Whenever I point to some files in Windows Explorer or similar program a yellow "sticky note" displays with either the filename or occasionally a summary of the details of the file such as Date Modified, Size etc. I find it really annoying since it covers up an area such as other files etc.

I have tried "Disable Notification Area Balloon Tips in Windows XP" and "EnableBalloonTips" registry entry is already set to '0' plus I even recreated and still no go...still appears. Does not appear on every file but once in a while it will happen/

Attached is a basic sample where I pointed to a jpg.....

Any help to remove this pop is very much appreciated.

Not sure if my thread subject makes much sense, but...

In Windows Explorer (Windows 7), when you right click in the column headers you have the option of adding columns under "More...". I use this occasionally, but hate that this list has dozens of items that I have zero use for. I'm not sure if some software I installed modified this list, if it's standard, or what, but I'd like to trim it. A lot.

I see stuff like:

35mm focal length
Anniversary
Assistant's name
Assistant's phone
Auto summary
Birthday
Children
Flag color
Pager
Webpage
Word count

That's just a very small fraction of the things in that list. It's ridiculous.

Hi, I just upgraded from W8.1 to W10 and it looks like the icons got smaller by default in the "details" view in the File Explorer.

Problem:
My problem is that now the overlay icons which are used by TortoiseSVN do not seem to show anymore in the "details" view (when they did use to show in all previous versions of Windows). By overlay icons, I mean things like a green arrow or a red exclamation mark which show up on the icon to indicate that the file is up to date in SVN or has been modified (see screenshots below).not good alternative: the overlay icons do appear in the "Medium icons" or bigger view; (but not for "Small icons"), as well as in the "Content" view. But none of these is satisfactory to me as I much prefer the "details" view for the things I do -- I like to be able to see both the SVN status at the same time as the details of files, in a reasonable presentation (I don't like the "Content" view, it wastes too much space when you have a lot of files to go through).

Path to solution:
I suspect that if there is a way to change the size of the icons in the "details" view, the overlay icons would show up again. The reason I believe this is that the overlay icons do appear in the "details" view when I use the 125% setting in the SYSTEM | Display "Customize your display" setting (which was used by default on my high resolution (1920 x 1080) but small (11.6") lapt... Hello, I am (as of this writing) using Windows 10 Preview Build 14390. My question has to do with customizing folders in File Explorer.

Is there a way to customize every folder/subfolder on my system (including external hard drives, USB flash drives, and CD/DVD) so that the Bit Rate type I?ve selected in the Sort By context menu is displayed in ?Display? Mode?

As of right now, it seems I have to add this option manually to each and every folder I use, one at a time.

If this is possible, what is the procedure? Also, if it is possible, will it work for new folders, as well? And will it work if I rename a folder?

The Bit Rate option need only appear in folders that contain audio files. Is there a way to restrict this option so that it doesn?t appear in every folder? (It?s not a big deal if it can?t.)

Here?s a screen shot of what I?m referring to:

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Hey folks,

I am currently trying to move "This PC" to the top of the navigation pane, or - alternatively - move the "Quick Access" to the very bottom.

Is there any possible way?

I have found (and used) ways for every other entry, but not those 2. I have even stupidly tried to apply the "SortOrderIndex" on random for both, without success.

Every input will be appreciated :-)

For some reason, my "Recycle Bin" will not display the files within it with the correct filters while in the "Details" view.

For example, I have the "View" set to "Details", and the two columns I have showing are "Name" and "Type", with "Name" selected as the preferred sort order.

With those settings in place, the "Recycle Bin" is not displaying the files in the correct order.I am not sure of the order that it is displaying them, as I can't pick-up on any pattern.

For example, it is displaying:

"File0002.jpg"
"File0003.jpg"
"File0004.jpg"
"File0001.mp3"
"File0001.jpg"

When I adjust it again so it displays them in the correct order, the next time I open the "Recycle Bin", the order has returned to the incorrect display.

Any ideas on how to correct this?

Hello, I've been noticing this over the years. When Daylight Saving Time occurs (whichever one, moving the clock forward 1 hour or moving it backward 1 hour), ALL my files' "Date Modified" detail move forward or backward 1 hour.

For example, I have a document file called asdf.docx and its Date Modified detail is: 9/26/2015 4:00 PM
When Daylight Saving Time comes around to move the clock forward 1 hour, that file's Date Modified is now 9/26/2015 5:00 PM. That's not correct, it should stay at 4:00 PM. What the hell is happening?

Note: Even though I have specified a USB drive here, I can't make it work on a fixed drive either.

I do not want my already previously set folder in other directories to change. I have looked through the folder view options but just can't seem to get it right. Can anyone help me out please.

Thanks
ASM

The title pretty much. Here is a picture of what I mean.

Answer:Add "Group Description" to a detail to display in a Folder

You do it from within a program for that tag.

When I open a folder in 7, unless I previously set it to a specific view setting, it seems to always auto default to "Detail" unless I change it manually.

Is there an easy way to make folders default to LIST automatically when I open them each time?

Thanx.

Answer:Can folders default the View to: "LIST", not Detail?

If you set it to "Documents" in the library properties, it should show as list.

Have Vista Home Premium on 2 computers. Working with music on desktop and want to see "bitrate" on the tracks in the music folder but it isn't listed as a detail option. It is on my laptop. Any suggestions on how to get it on the desktop?

Answer:Lost "bitrate" as detail folder option

Hi ManorMusic and welcome to Vista Forums

This problem occurs when the folder template is set incorrectly. Here is the Sample Music folder set as Documents. You can see that the items available for the columns in Detail view do not include Bit rate.

To correct this, right click on a blank section and select Customize This Folder...

Select the Customize tab, if not already selected. In the first drop down box under Use this folder type as a template: select Music Details and click OK.

Notice that the items available for the columns in Detail view now include Bit rate. Also notice that the toolbar now includes the Play all button, whereas previously it didn't.

I would like to open my folders in the "detail" view rather than the thumbnails, which are slower to present and give me less information - often a blank thumbnail.

My guess is that there is a priority assigned somewhere in the registry that is changeable. I don't know where to look for it.

Could someone advise, please?

Hi,I'm using Windows 7 Professional x64. When I use Windows Explorer to view image files (jpg, png, etc.), I would like to see each image's dimensions listed in the Details Pane (when it's set to view the images as Icons/Thumbnails, rather than Details). However, the only details that show up in the Details Pane are Name, Type, Date Created, Date Modified, and Size. This is the case even though:* I've checked 'Dimensions' in the 'Choose Details' options* The folder is already categorized/optimized for 'Pictures'* Other folders show the other details I want -- i.e., the Details Pane for my 'Videos' folder shows Length, Frame Width, Frame Height, and other details that I've chosenAny suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Has anyone tried to (or found a third party app) that can put the details pane back to the bottom of the File Explorer windows, like it was in 7. It was of great use to me when reading tags and other information. In 8, it just takes needless width space from the windows.

I have a problem that's driving me crazy and no idea how to begin to deal with it. Please forgive the length of this post. I just want to minimize going back and forth to provide details.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium (legitimate license) on a 64-bit system. My laptop is an HP Pavilion G7-2022us.

For security, I run Microsoft Security Essentials, ThreatFire, Hitman Pro and WinPatrol in real-time mode (they have different functions and don't conflict with each other). My firewall is Windows native firewall. There are various other little monitors to prevent keylogging, webcam hijacking, etc. I have a variety of other file cleaning, anti-virus and malware software that is kept turned OFF (including processes) until I need to cycle through them one-by-one to do preventive maintenance (2 - 3X a year or whenever I'mexperiencing weird behavior or slowdowns).

I have an Orico USB3.0 powered hub in one port with six external hard drives attached (mostly WDs) and two charging phones. Another USB port holds a Logitech Nano Receiver. The third (and last) port is empty. Right now I access the internet through cable Ethernet.

I like to play with new programs and have a large number installed on my machine, but I haven't installed very much in at least a month, certainly nothing I have installed seemed to directly result in this strange behavior.

Since I first posted I repaired the file associations for pdf, exe and lnk files. The former was causing issues when I moved pdfs into folders, but was not the cause of the main crashing, nor did it fix it.
Now I'm running the Tweaking.com Windows repair. It's in hour 32 on a 1TB drive and is still on Step 5 (Repair WMI). I have no idea if I can interrupt it or if doing so will screw things up further.

In the meantime am using 6 year old Android tiny keyboard phone to get things done and falling behind severely on work I need to do.

Hi TechGuy,

I'm having some recent problems on my laptop. When I log-in and start using it, the performance starts slowing down. When I look at the Task Manager, I notice that the task called Explorer.exe takes up a lot of my CPU. In a couple of minutes, I also start getting Internet Explorer windows to pop-up on my screen (I normally use Firefox) with advertisements suggesting that my computer is infected and some software downloads that could help. I recently installed McAfee Total Works, or whatever they call their 10-in-1 software which is supposed to do it all. I ran several scans, and on some of them, if did find and disable the Generic.dx trojan. Even though it claims it is doing something, I don't notice any changes - Explorer.exe continues to bog me down, and the IE windows keep popping up to the point that I cannot use my computer effectively anymore.

Microsoft XP-Professional

Any pointers would be truly appreciated!!

Thanks,

While using "Windows Explorer" as an FTP client I have put the system into a state where any attempts to access an FTP folder from "Windows Explorer" produces the following dialog:
Dialog Title: "FTP Folder Error"
Dialog Icon: Information Icon
Dialog Text: "Windows cannot access this folder.  Make sure you typed the file name correctly and that you have permission to access the folder.  Details: No more Internet handles can be allocated"
Dialog Buttons: OK
I had used the "Add a network location" feature of "Windows Explorer" to add an FTP site.  The FTP folder appears under "Computer" in the left panel of "Windows Explorer."
It is not mapped to a drive letter.  I then initiated a large FTP transfer operation by using drag-and-drop from the FTP folder to a local folder.  A portion of the transfer completed as expected but after some time it produced the "No more Internet
handles can be allocated" error.  When OK was clicked the transfer was terminated.  In this case I am using large to refer to many thousands of files and directories to be transferred as opposed to a small count of files having many bytes.
After the initial error dialog is cleared with the OK button and the transfer is terminated I can then reliably reproduce the dialog.  Any attempt to open an FTP network location

So, there's a location in File Explorer on Windows 10 you can go to called "Network." In this place, you can go to your router properties, and change some settings. Originally, a "General" tab was appearing in these router properties, and you could change some "settings" by clicking a button on that tab, and basically with the settings window that would appear, you could map ports/port forward. However, for some reason, (and I don't know what I did...) this "General" tab is no longer appearing in router properties. All I think I did was open up router properties and close it once, and i don't know, it's just gone, all I see is some router info in a "Network Device" tab.

Answer:No "General" tab in router properties in File Explorer's "Network"

You do not get your router properties in the Network devices that show up in Explorer. It is just Windows pulling UPNP info for you to be able to click on the Icon and open up the browser, so that you can log into the device. Not all network devices can be accessed when shown in Explorer.

There is nothing wrong with Windows. If you want to go to a Network share, then you need to map it.

Hey,

I searched for this but I admit I wasn't overly thorough. So I apologise in advance if this has already been answered.

In some programs (eg. Firefox) the save dialogue window has the Navigation pane on the left. Whereas other programs (eg. Foxit reader, acrobat reader) do not. I find this heavily inconvenient as I use the navigation pane extensively.

I actually went to switch to Acrobat from Foxit and found it also didn't have the navigation pane.

Heres what I mean:

Firefox save dialogue window:

Foxit save dialogue window:

So I was wondering if there is anyway to get the navigation pane in the foxit/other programs save dialogue window.

Thanks
Wally

Answer:Can you add the "Navigation Pane" to a programs save dialogue window?

The program has to do some COM mumbo jumbo to use system libraries. Notice how these articles mention IFileDialog

Anything with an I stuck on the front of it means you have to mess with a bunch of COM stuff to use it. The 'I' being "Interface."

Bacisally, if you're not getting paid big bucks, it's a lot of hassle for no gain.

Hello,

A couple of days ago I notice that the "Libraries" on the navigation panel were gone.
(see image 001.jpg)

The Libraries folder exists (in the AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries) and contains all the folders that should show.

Right clicking and choosing "restore default libraries" had no effect--not even an error message. I also try the "Include in Library" button but nothing.

After some research, I try a few things that didnt solve my problem.Unhide the libraries using the Command Prompt:
attrib -h "%AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries\*.library-ms"
Change the Folders attribute "Shown in navigation pane" (NOTE: the post says that I should enable that checkbox but in my case is disables (see image 002) )
user the Registry Editor to see the DWORD Attributes registry value (?b080010d?)(The value was the same so no change was needed)
Run some Malware/Registry software to clean/repair

I've seen this topic pop up in many different forums, and the recommended fix is always to right click and select "Restore Default Libraries." or "show all folders" As mentioned, this has no effect on my machine.

Thanks for any help,

I don't know if this will work, but download this:

I have this problem on my fresh Windows 10 Pro x64 installtion where the documents folder keep multiplying in the file explorer navigation pane, it sometimes appears when I'm using the file explorer or leave it open in the background for a while.

The system folders (Documents, Pictures and the other system folder) are all located in OneDrive and in my case D:\OneDrive\Documents.
Like this:
Attachment 27467

And this is what happens when I leave the file explorer open for a while. I have no idea what triggers it so it is hard to reproduce. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with it being in OneDrive but I guess not since none of the other folders are acting like this.
Attachment 27465
The extra Document folders don't appear like that all at once, they appear one by one and when you wait long enough it can become like that.

My question is does anyone know what this could be caused by or how to fix this? There are no events in the event viewer that seem to be related to this problem so nothing I can show you from there.

Thanks!

Update:
I've just found the cause of this problem, it caused by OneDrive syncing the folder. The moment it starts to look for changes or update changes in the folder it will multiply and keep adding more folders one bye one.

Answer:"Documents" folder multiplying in navigation pane

I had this problem as well. An easy way to reproduce this was to make a new folder and delete it. Every time I did that it would add another documents folder to the navigation under this PC. What did you with onedrive to fix this? Just unsync documents? Thanks

I'm a novice to customizing Windows 7, and have tweaked it rather successfully so far, but I've run into a roadblock. The next tweak I'm trying to do is to replace the loud Favorites star to something a bit more low-key.

In HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E}\DefaultIcon the registry key points to resimages.dll in System32: %SystemRoot%\system32\imageres.dll,-1024

This should point that yellow star, which I would like to retrieve and edit to replace if at all possible (I'm unsure if I can simple point the DefaultIcon key to any old .ico file or if it needs to be a .dll, but at this point that's not a huge issue). However, it doesn't seem to be there, but I'm able to change an icon of a file to the yellow star.

I've tried looking through imageres.dll in Resource Hacker but I can't seem to find it there either.

On another note, does anyone have experience changing the "Favorites" label to something else?

Howdy,
Been searching for this one for a bit. Found loads on Blank Reading Pane however this is slightly different.

Have a home user who some messages are not displaying in the reading pane. These are mainly from Facebook and some various ones from their work colleagues.

When choosing reply message is also blank however selecting Office Button > Editor Options > Display > Hidden Text (checked) the message content appears.

Why then is the message content not visible in the main preview pane? These are just the simple message notifications such as from facebook.

Looked at fonts / mail format (tried all variences) to no avail.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers

As you can see, I want to remove that Sharepoint menu which I'm not using anymore. I have uninstalled Sharepoint so when I click on the folder this message would trigger:
Thanks in advance

Answer:Remove useless "Sharepoint" from navigation pane

Hi, ideas:

1. Install Sharepoint monitoring the installation with Revo uninstaller. Then uninstall it using Revo uninstaller.
2. There are various guides for various versions of Sharepoint of different eras for manual uninstallation. See if you can find an appropriate one.
3. Search the registry for E:\Cloud Marketing\Sharepoint and delete relevant entries taking due precautions to back up.

I do not want to see a large space to the right of my photos & files in file explorer. I want to see the full space filled with them. I have been searching for hours for the mythical "General Tab" which supposedly contains the key but it doesn't seem to exist. Does anyone know if this display is possible?

I want to make some specific changes to the default Preview Details string for picture files in Windows Explorer. I have found an excellent write-up on how to edit that string using regedit, but the author was only interested in the specific around music. In the attached picture, I show the file properties/attributes that I am interested in placing in the Detail Pane. The current edited string is shown below.

prop:System.Photo.DateTaken;System.Keywords;System.Title;System.Subject;
*System.Photo.PeopleNames;*System.Contact.Location;*System.Contact.StateOrProvince;
*System.Contact.Country;System.Comment;*System.DateCreated;*System.DateModified;
*System.SharedWith

As you can see, some work, others don't. Is there a comprehensive list of these properties and their syntax in the form
(*)System.xxxx.yyy
that one can refer to when modifying the string?

Hi,
I must apologize in advance for any forthcoming ignorance, as I am a forum newbie. Using Win8.1, I am trying to relocate the Details Pane in Explorer from the space wasting right side to the well fitting & familiar bottom.

Fix I found is here: How To Move Details Pane To The Bottom In Windows 8.1 File Explorer

Has anyone had any experience in general with this tool? Haven't been able to find out any more jnfo either way othter than the link.

Thank you in advance for your time.

Answer:Win8.1: Reconnect Details Pane to bottom of Explorer

Better use Old New Explorer:
OldNewExplorer - make your 8.1/10 explorer work like Win7/8 one - StartIsBack+ - MSFN Forum

It has some other features but the one you are searching for is one of them. It doesn't always make the hack but it is much safer than patching the shell32.dll

When attempting to browse folders using Explorer opened from Start Menu Or left click on start button, Explorer will allow click on "-" to close paths, but hangs with hour glass if any attempt is made to expand any path or open any file. Explorer remains in this state until closed, at which time Windows asks if I wish to report the problem to Microsoft.
If I use the "My Computer" icon on the desktop to browse, all actions including access to networked resources work perfectly.
Can anyone please explain the difference between the two file browsing utilities and offer an explanation of the above?
My system is: AMD 3000; 2GB Ram Xp Pro with all service packs and updates. I am on a wired network with fixed IP addresses. Other network components are: Old Dual P350 with 0.5GB Ram running Windows 2000 (Explorer on this machine has no problems including access to networked resources); Buffalo 1TB Link Station; 2Wire ADSL router and HP LaserJet 1100 printer.

If I open "My Computer" and then I double click on the C: drive icon (or any drive), it opens up a new window with the Search panel on the left. If I right click on a drive, the menu comes up and "Search" is the in bold, indicating it is the default. How can I change this so it is no longer the default, but opening it up with "Open" as the default?

Answer:Explorer Window defaults to "Search" instead of "Folders"

Start> Run> type: regsvr32 /i shell32.dll then hit OK.
If that doesn't work, try this script repair from Doug Knox.

Hello,
I got this problem today. Normally when right clicking on the "explorer" icon it shows shortcuts of folders that I added as well as frequently visited folders.
But now it shows nothing but two options: "Windows explorer" and "detach the program".
I tried to move new folders in but nothing was changed.
Please, what is my problem? How could I solve it?
Thank you!

Answer:"Frequent" and "attached" disappear from Explorer Icon

Problem solved!

Jump Lists - Reset and Clear All Items

Delete everything in these two folders:

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations

And then you can make new shortcuts as you want!

Today I tried to burn a disk of mp3 files as I've done many times before. When I tried to copy the files from the C drive to the D (CD/DVD drive), Windows Explorer only would allow "Move," not "Copy". I tried to copy with CTRL+Right Click and that didn't work either - when I hover over the icon for the D drive it says "Move."

I was able to copy and burn a disk (in CD format) with Windows Media Player, and the CD drive works fine for playback. Also, when I plug in an external hard drive Windows Explorer allows copy of files to the external hard drive.

It's only when I try to copy files to the CD drive that I encounter this problem.

No other recent changes have been made to the computer.

Any idea, and thanks very much!

Answer:Windows Explorer only allows "Move", not "Copy" to CD/DVD drive

try selecting the files--then right click and select 'SEND TO' CD/DVD--it shouldn't be possible to 'copy' to a blank CD/DVD as it will be unformatted.

Hi, I'm a new-commer and have been following this thread avidly and taking everyone's advice as I too have identicle problem to Chaz and other bloke i.e my PC (XP) is very slow, shows torch when you open "My Computer" for 15 secs, and when I use Explorer takes ages to find a web address so I'm using Firefox which is fine. Been bothering me for months, tried RWnewson's registry and didn't work. i don't have. Created shortcut direct to C drive to bypass "My Computer" delay however while this works, PC is becoming worse as when I move any files from one folder to another within the C drive the PC can;t cope and stops responding. assuming you ran spyware and adaware cleanups, i would suggest reinstalling windows..... could you post your system specs? that may help a little bit...

Thanks.

PS checked MS database. it said to go into Adminstrator services and stop WIA. I checked this and it is already stopped on this computer.

About one month ago, a new problem surfaced:

Most times when I try to "Save As" a document and the application calls Windows Explorer for me to Browse where to save the file, it hangs for upwards of 60 seconds. The Browse window appears, but then I get a "spinning circular cursor" for 45-60 seconds until I can do anything. This occurs in all applications from MSExcel through Internet Explorer.

The system never completely crashes, but there is always this 60 second lag now.

The lag also occurs when I try to open a document...and to a less extent, but sometimes, when I simply open Windows Explorer (Windows Explorer is inconsistent as to whether it will give me a lag...sometimes it does work fine).

I have previously tried posting in the malware forum. I had picked something up they found...and cleaned it out, but that seems to have been completely unrelated to this as it was a virus redirecting my Google searches.

Can anyone help?

Hello, nice peoples that provide so many fixes to make Windows suck less.

I've been looking for hours, but the terms are so general I can't find anything. When I open up Windows Explorer, the "Computer", my profile folder, and the Recycle Bin all appear under "Desktop". Which makes finding things a pain in the butt.

Is there any way to set those items as their own icons, outside of Desktop, and remove them from under Desktop? Basically, I want to see this:

-Computer
└C:\
└Folder
└Folder
└...
└D:\

-Desktop
└Folder
└...

-senselocke
└Downloads
└Favorites
└...

-Recycle Bin

I know you guys have found a ton of tweaks for Windows 7, but this one has bugged me for a while now. Has anyone found a way to get something sort of like that?

Answer:Move "Computer" and "[username]" out from under Desktop in Explorer?

Hello Senselocke,

You could use the tutorial below to add the User Folder (ex: senselocke) as a separate group in the navigation pane.User Folder - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
You could use the tutorial below to add the Recycle Bin as a separate group in the navigation pane.Recycle Bin - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane
You might also see if unchecking the Show all folders option in the navigation pane may help get you closer.

Hope this helps some,

Any suggestions?

My MS Outlook (2003) reading pane has simply disappeared.  I've tried to get it to come back by selecting "bottom" "right" or "off" under the options.  I've tried restarting MS Outlook.  I've even rebooted.  No luck at all.  Any other suggestions or possibilities as to where it might have gone?  It doesn't appear to have been minimized or "hidden."  I'm honestly out of things to try.  Any help is appreciated!

Hi, I just re-installed windows 7 on my desktop pc and have a question about the settings of the details pane in windows explorer (the one that appears and the bottom when you select a file). Previously when I selected video files (.mp4, .avi and .mkv) I would get the details at the bottom, the video frame width and height, size of file etc.. but since I reinstalled I don't get these details when I select video files. I know its only a small problem but I work with video files a lot and have gotten used to seeing the resolution of files without having to open them. Does anyone know how I can get the details pane to show these details again? At the moment it only displays the video size, name and state.

Here is a screen-shot of the details pane for a selected .mkv video file on my laptop, this is what I want it to display on my pc.

Answer:Solved: Windows explorer details pane for videos problem

Is the folder set as a "Video" type?
Look at the properties of the folder, and there you will see a drop down list for the type.

"dependency chain" "windows 7" internet "windows explorer"

At the time of this writing, this search in Google will produce one result at best. Am I searching the wrong things? I have tried a couple handfuls of variants, and I am coming up with zilch.

Though I am fairly well versed in Windows 7 from working on other people's machines, I decided to stick with good old XP because of one issue above all else. When I instructed my firewall to block Windows Explorer from accessing the Internet it completely cut me off from the Internet, no ifs, ands or buts. My understanding of why this is happened leads me to believe the dependency chain for Internet access goes through Windows Explorer. I have long had a habit of blocking my File Manager of choice access to the Internet because... well, it's a file manager! Admittedly, my one experience with Windows 7 on my own machine was a retired student version of Server 2008 R2, but as soon as I found out that was the case, I decided not to make the move to Windows 7 and went back to my XP installation. I believe I was using Sunbelt Personal Firewall at the time. I now use PCTools Free Firewall.

Is this still the case with Windows 7? Is there a workaround if it is?

I haven't tried to recreate this on another person's machine.

"Launch Browser Windows in a Separate Process" Setting Is Not Available in Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.5

You can go into Services and check:
Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)
Network Connections
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
Windows Management Instrumentation

R-click on each one, then Properties, then the Dependencies Tab.
You would have to cross check each one that is listed.

I have seen a few threads similar to this problem on this forum and I believe I have tried all the possible solutions that I've seen, but the problem persists.

On my co-worker's PC (Win7 Pro, 64-bit, SP1), when he uses Internet Explorer to upload image files to a website, the "Choose File to Upload" dialog always opens in detail view. He'll switch to large thumbnails, look for the file he needs to upload, upload it, and then move on to the next upload (this particular website only lets you upload one file at a time, unfortunately), and the dialog resets to detail view. This is incredibly frustrating for him, especially because I don't have this problem on my (identical) PC.

I've gone through all the folder view settings and painstakingly checked all the Internet Options looking for what might be different between our two systems, and I'm coming up dry. I have tried messing with the registry, doing a System Restore or two, downgrading him from IE11 (which we were both using) to IE10, and it keeps happening.

This doesn't happen in Chrome, but unfortunately the one website we have to use is one of those "Designed for IE, not supported in any other browser" sites (ARGH).

Is there anything I'm not thinking of that could be causing this? His PC is brand-new (A Dell, like all of ours) from just a couple of months ago. He doesn't have any malware that I've been able to spot, and is not an Administrator on the computer (the problem also exists when ... Read more

When I start up IE, I occasionally get a message in my system tray that says "System Message - Click here for details", and then an Explorer window opens and I get a Windows Popup that says "PCPrivacyCleaner may find dangerous traces that need to be cleaned. Then when I try to close the window another Windows Message says "NOTICE: You have not completed the scan. You need to clean up all the temporary and history records on your computer to remove these tracks. this happens a few times when I first start Internet Explorer after a reboot, and after that it seems to stop.

After always being OCD about it and clicking it in every prgress window, I've been on the hunt to no avail to end the compulsive fit of mine. I cannot seem to dig up anything googling it either.

What I'm trying to do is find out how to make Windows 7 (Windows 7 Ultimate, to be precise) always show "more details" during file transfers (copy, cut/paste, deleting, etc).

The concept is pretty easy, but like I said, I can't find out how/where to do it. Something tells me it is probably an easy Registry Editor key/hack.

Anyone know how to enable this?

I recently configured my files and folders to show the "Details" view, using the tutorial, "Windows Explorer Folder View settings":

Windows Explorer Folder View settings

So far, everything looks fine in Windows Explorer. (I obviously haven't checked every one of hundreds of folders )

However, if I do a download, and click "Save", the download dialog has the view setting "Icons". All sub-directories also have the setting "Icons"

Is there a way to universally change *every* folder to have "Details" as the view option in *every" dialog box?
.

Answer:How to make Download dialog show "Details" view?

Here's some more info on the folder properties.

A) In Windows Explorer, if I click on any personal folder, such as "Documents". Right-click. Select "Properties".

In the "Customize" tab, the template is "Documents", and "Apply to subfolders" is checked.

Open any sub-folder, or sub-sub-folder. All entries are correct. They all show the "Details" view. This is all fine.

-----------------------------

B) However, when I am downloading a file, the folders show the "Small icons" view, rather than the "Details" view.

For example, in the downloads dialog, click on the "Documents" personal folder. Right-click. Select "Properties".

In the "Customize" tab, the template is "Documents", and "Apply to subfolders" is checked.

However, open any sub-folder. Folders are shown in three columns. If I click "Views", I see "Small icons".

Note that FILES ARE NOT SHOWN.

-----------------------------

C) In the downloads dialog, click on the "Downloads" personal folder. Right-click. Select "Properties".

Everything is identical to B, but now FILES ARE SHOWN.

-----------------------------

It seems to me that registry values used by Windows Explorer and the downloads dialog box are different.
