User desktop and switching users

Question: User desktop and switching users

After upgrading from Win 7 64 to Win 10 64, whenever a different user logs into the computer the desktop gets screwed up for the original user. Both accounts are admin accounts; one has a password, the does not.

Has anyone else seen this and does anyone know how to fix it?

Thx

Preferred Solution: User desktop and switching users

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Dell Dimension 8400 desktop, Pentium 4, 3.00GHz, 1.00GB RAM, Windows XP Pro SP3, single machine (i.e. not networked), PC-cillin Internet Security 2007 always up to date, IE7 for browser.

This computer has been running perfectly for over a year until 4 days ago. We have 3 users on the Welcome Screen and they all have administrator accounts. You can log on to any account with no problem. If you log off someone else can log on to their account with no problem. However, if you are logged on and want to stay logged on and then click <Log Off> <Switch User> and then try logging on with another account after about 5 seconds the screen goes black except for a box in the center that has the following message.

The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
access is denied
Please try again or consult your system administrator
underneath the above wording is a box that says OK. I then click OK. At this point the Welcome Screen comes back and it will have the following. It will say that the person who clicked <Switch User> is Logged on. When you click on the logged in person or the other two accounts it just brings up the same black screen with the same box saying you cannot log in and access is denied. However, it only takes 1/10th of a second or less to do it rather than the 5 seconds it took the first time.

Also, it asks for password once in a while. I can't figure out a pattern to this. Until 4 days ago we just clicked on our user account name an... Read more

Hello,

Two days ago, I started having a problem with my desktop freezing. When I restart the computer, I am able to log onto my account fine. But when I switch users (I am not on a domain) to my girlfriend's account, her desktop freezes.

- The mouse can move, but I am unable to click the start button, nor any of the icons.
- I also get the hourglass when i hover my mouse over the task bar.
- When I push ctrl+alt+delete, and switch users, the desktop completely freezes and nothing happens.

- I am running XP Professional, and have had no problems since I installed it over 5 months ago
- I have done no major program installations or configuration changes recently

Any help would be appreciated!!

Another annoying bug in 1511 update.

After the update to 1511, if you use "fast-switch user" functionality, you sill loose icon positions of the currently logged in user. All icons will be swept up to the left side of the screen.

More precisely:
- Let's say the user is currently logged in as user A and has neatly arranged icons on their desktop
- Without logging out, the user switches to user B account (user A remains logged in)
- The user logs out of user B account
- The user returns to user A account. At this point all icons on user A desktop have lost their positions. They are swept to the left side of the desktop
EDIT: Further investigation shows that problem occurs only on machines with display scaling set to some non-100% value.

Answer:1511 does not keep desktop icon positions when switching users

I notice that there are quite a few reports on the Net that ESET NOD32 used to cause a similar issue. I do run ESET NOD32. I wonder if this is caused by ESET again...

Can someone without ESET installed try this?

I recently reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate. After reinstalling and re-creating the user accounts I noticed that I could no longer use this PC as a host for Remote Desktop as I had before.

Also, I can no longer switch users, instead I have to Log off each time a user wants to log on.

I have done the gpedit.msc (policies/templates "hide entry points for fast user switching" which is disabled.

I have also added a registry HideFastUserSwitching. These two tips are offered in a few places.

I have also deleted the original user accounts and remade them just in case there was a corruption. I keep all data in a data partition so I just point the newly created accounts back to that partition. Could that have something wrong with it?

Any Ideas on what else I should do?

I recently replaced my 1920x1200 display with a 2560x1440, and it seems that since then whenever I do a Fast User Switch from the intial user logon to a 2nd (both Admins), when I logoff User2 and switch back-again to the original user profile, certain of the gadgets and desktop icons move, those at the bottom of the desktop and below/right also. Although I'm not certain they necessarily move PRECISELY in alignment with a 1920x1200 desktop, that of course is what I suspect (suppose I use use a measuring tool to determine this exactly).

I have been to-the-moon-and-back trying things, including checking Device Manager for a hidden 2nd monitor (there is none), updating/checking Graphics drivers (this is an Intel DH67GD with HD2000 onboard graphics, W7HPx64), searching the Registry for appearances of the old 1920x1200 resolution, setting both desktops to the same theme, unchecking "allow themes to change icons", setting icons the same size, etc. etc. ad nauseum, to no change. What is further interesting is that if I logon originally to User2, and then fast-switch to User1 and then log-off User1, then User2's desktop is changed. So this problem occurs in "either direction". But it does NOT occur if I LOGOFF then logon again to the other user--it ONLY occurs when fast-switching such that the first user is still logged-on.

I wonder if anyone here knows what the "magic" might be for what-is-different between the situation where only 1 user is logged-on ... Read more

Answer:Desktop changes, but only after Fast User Switching

Well I seem to know how to "stump the stars" around here don't I. OK well my workaround is "don't do it" (Fast User Switch) i.e. log OFF and then log ON every user every time.

I've also set-up my Firefox profile on the main user profile so I don't have to switch to the other for surfing...

Is there a quicker way to switch users other than "start", "current user icon", then "desired user icon"?
Why can't all the users be located on one screen so all one has to do is click on the desired one?

My father replaced his Windows 98 machine with a new computer running Windows 7. He's currently on 32-bit ultimate, but we could change versions if needed.

He's really hoping there's some way to force Windows 7 into a single user mode, primarily so C:\users\All Users, Default User, Public, and his own user are merged into one. It's absolutely driving him nuts the way it is.

I've done quite a bit of searching and have came up empty. Before I said it couldn't be done, I'm wondering if anyone's heard of a way to do this.

Answer:Win 7 single user, merging users\All Users, Default User, Public, etc?

Just curious, but why does this annoy him so much? Surely it's not that complicated a system and all of his documents etc are stored in the same place, with more or less easy to use shortcuts to these directories placed throughout Windows 7?

Hi guy's just wondering if it's possible to get windows 7 to switch audio drivers when you switch to another user account.

For eg.. normal speakers device for my personal account and then have my multichannel device (profire 2626) set as default for my other user account 4 studio work.

Atm, if i change it on one account it changes on the other account which is annoying and i'd just like to set default device for each account so i don't have to do this.

Thx

I have a dell dimension C 21 pc with windows XP home edition service pack 2 which I have had for some months now. I have the free edition of AVG. We are 2 users, I am the main user and my partner is the second user. A problem frequently arises when he switches to his"area" in that an AVG box comes up for updating but then freezes . He then tries to shut it down gets the message "this program is not responding click on end or cancel" so we can't get rid of it.
I have spoken to the Dell help line who a) want to charge me for any advice as they say this is nothing to do with the hardware, and only the hardware is guaranteed when I complain about this they say I have to get rid of AVG and that only Macafee, which they put on for 90 days and I got rid of, will work.Any ideas on how to cure this it is quite annoying and he is getting quite fed up with it.

I would probably try uninstalling and then reinstalling AVG to see if that fixes the problem.

Okay so I have a computer that three people use, so we have profiles. I'm usually downloading things and when they log off, this is terminated. I'd like to be able to have it so they can go on the computer and I can keep downloading. So the feature I'm looking for is switch users. The problem is; It's not anywhere in sight. I was using the classic theme for both the icons of folders, and the start menu (all programs in stead of programs, etc). I would be fine with switching to the default look if it enabled me to switch users.

I just realized that I can't even change the look back to default. Can anyone help with either problem? (changing back to the default look, and being able to switch users)

Here are possible things that I've done:
Start>Shut Down> Than from here there is Log off, Restart, Shutdown, Standby. No switch.

When I try to go back to the default view I do this.
Right Click on Start>Properties> The option should be here but it's not.

Answer:Switching users... Can't do it.

Is "Use Fast User Switching" checkmarked in the User account under control panel?? If it's on..you should get the "Switch User" listed when you click Start..Log Off. There is also a registry tweak that will keep your internet connection active while switching users. Do so at your own risk as you will be editing and adding a value to the registry.

Here's how if you want to attempt.

1. Click Start, click Run and type REGEDIT and hit Enter (or click OK)
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows NT/ CurrentVersion/Winlogon
3. Right-click an empty space in the right-hand pane, and from the menu
Select New > String value
4. Name the new value KeepRASConnections (it's important that you use upper and lower-case letters exactly as shown)
5. Right-click the KeepRASConnections value, and choose Modify from the menu
6. Enter 1 as the Value data
7. Close the registry editor
8. Restart Windows for the changes to take effect

Question: switching users

Ihave a problem swith between account users.

when i first log on everything is fine and logging off is o.k. the problem arises when you log onto a new user and try to log off. It wont let you log off.

The only way is by using ctrl, alt, del and manually logging off.

I have recently installed a wireless internet connection and with the connection being on all the time i wondered if that might be the problem.

I disconnected the connection and everything worked as normal.

Is there a way that you can stay online while switching between users?

Any help would be greatly apreciated....Many Thanks

Answer:Problems switching users

Well, I think it is because of the available memory on your computer. What are your computer's specs?

Try logging off your account, and then signing into hers. If it's the first time she's signing in, it can take a long time for all the new user settings to be created.ie. the internet explorer 6 is being installed... leave it alone for like 10-30min and see what happens.

XP sits on the welcome screen for an unusually long time, then goes to just the user's wallpaper screen (no icons, no taskbar, nothing). Can't pull up task manager or warm boot, have to shut down & restart. I can log on any of the other accounts, and log off, and switch to mine, but not vice versa. Even if I don't do ANYTHING after signing on. So, the problems seems to be with my account settings somehow.

This is a new problem -- actually, my husband (who notices it most, because I use the PC most of the time, and then when he tries to get on at night, can't) says it was happening itermittantly, but now happens every time.

Any ideas?

TIA,
M

Hi All

What would cause a computer to take several minutes when logging off one user and then logging into another user? Takes several minutes. Computer shutdown one time and ever since then it takes along time when switching users. Other than that the computer runs ok. The computer is networked to a domain.

Thanks, Doug

I have a dell dimension C 21 pc with windows XP home edition service pack 2 which I have had for some months now. I have the free edition of AVG. We are 2 users, I am the main user and my partner is the second user. A problem frequently arises when he switches to his"area" in that an AVG box comes up for updating but then freezes . He then tries to shut it down gets the message "this program is not responding click on end or cancel" so we can't get rid of it.
I have spoken to the Dell help line who a) want to charge me for any advice as they say this is nothing to do with the hardware, and only the hardware is guaranteed b) when I complain about this they say I have to get rid of AVG and that only Macafee, which they put on for 90 days and I got rid of, will work.Any ideas on how to cure this it is quite annoying and he is getting quite fed up with it.

I Am running Win7 64 bit. Whenever I switch user accounts the computer will start the switch and then lock up with a display message that says no signal on the monitor. It happens if the computer has been running for hours or only a couple of minutes. I have to shut the PC off and leave it off for 20-30 minutes. I can then restart and enter any user account. But if I try to switch user or logoff and pick a different user the whole cycle begins anew. Can anyone here help me?

Brian

Answer:Switching Users Problems

No signal to the monitor seems more like a graphics problem. Check and make sure your drivers are up to date. Also, run scannow system file checker. That will check the system files. See if either of these help.

Hi,

I'm sorry if this has been asked before, but I did a search and could not find anything related to the problem I'm experiencing.

I have an XP box with SP2, and have created several accounts for my family. I've found that often when I try to log off a family member and log on as myself that the pc freezes. It seems to be ok at first because it expands my name once I click on it, but very shortly will do nothing and I have to press reset.

Does anyone know what that might be? Thank you in advance for your time.

You know the sound that the computer makes when you click on start-> Log Off -> Switch User? It's a specific sound like when you turn off your computer or when you restart your computer, or when you log in to your computer. That "Windows" sound. Well for me, that sound has disapeared everytime switch users. My normal sound is okay, and the log off/log in sounds are still there, but for some strange reason, my Switch User sound is gone. I was just wondering what caused this, it's not really a big deal, but I am just curious as to what happened.

Answer:Switching Users Sound

Don't know why it stopped, unless some one disabled it or deleted the file.
You can reset/select the sound you want here:
Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices
Sounds Tab
Last two items under the Windows section are Windows Logoff and Windows Logon
Files are usually in the Windows\Media folder:
Windows XP Logoff Sound.wav
Windows XP Logon Sound.wav

Hey, i'm trying to uninstall a program, and windows is telling me that another user is logged on, and that it won't uninstall properly if they're logged in, anyway can i log that user out without having their password, so I can uninstall this program?

Answer:Switching Users Without A Password

You should be able to log them off by using Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), switching to the Users tab, highlighting the user that you want to log off and then select Log Off from the buttons at the bottom of the screen.

I've had this problem for a long time now. Every once in a while I will set out on a google quest to find the answer but I haven't succeded yet

The problem is that whenever I "switch user" (win + L) out of my account for someone else to log on their account, when they try logging off, my monitor acts like if I was putting the computer into sleep mode. That is, it goes black and some messages come up on the screen saying the usual "check power etc" messages and the light flashes. The computer continues to run and there is no way of restoring my screen so I am forced to press the main power button on the computer tower.

I am running windows xp professional sp 2
My video card is nvidia geforce fx 5500
Pentium 4 3.00GHz
1BG RAM
I run zone alarm and AVG in the background

I have not always had this problem. I don't remember when it started but it has been a long time now (I would say at least 6 months.)

Appreciate any suggestions or information...

This appears to be an "odd" one.
My Daughter has a Phillips Freevent pc running win. xp pro. When switching users this small icon "fail" pops up, this does not prevent the new user from logging on but I can find no "properties" associated with this error msg.

I have set up 2 users; 1 as administrator (me) and 1 for my wife. It is a home computer and we do not require password protection. I am the normal user and have managed to set up so that I login within having to enter password.
However when my wife uses the computer the Start-up screen is me and my wife has to switch user. When she does this she has to enter her her password.
Is it possible to set-up so that she can simply switch user without her passport

Answer:Switching Users without password

Hello Polterry, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since you have more than one user account on the computer, you might consider using the tutorial below to set to always show all users at sign in instead of the last user. Since you do not have a password, it would sign in to your account automatically if you were the last one that signed out. Having it set to all users, will instead have the sign in screen show with all user accounts to select to sign in without having to switch user.

Sign in - Show All Users or Last User in Windows 8
If your wife doesn't have a password, she should be able to just select her account to sign in.

Hope this helps,

Hello, i recently removed a virus with the help of one of the mods of this forum by using combofix, my computer sped up greatly but now i find when i try to switch users it takes from around at the minimum 5 minutes to switch and the max around 8 or 9 mins.

I am using windows Vista Business, 2.6Ghz Core 2 Duo Processor and a sufficient amount of ram (in my opinion anyways - 3gigabyte ram).

Could i have some help in solving this issue and trying to get it back to its normal 5-15 seconds user switch? The waiting time can get tedious when i switch users and its really annoying!

Help would be great appreciated!

I've been having a problem where when I switch users from another account and start using iTunes, it keeps playing the error/prompt sound that I hear for the other account. When the other account user switches back, they find a lot of prompts saying that "iTunes cannot be opened because another user has it open", despite the fact that they didn't have iTunes running.

If I terminate the other user's process through Task Manger -->View Processes from all users, it stays off for about 2-3 minutes before coming back on, playing the annoying prompt sound and displaying the pile of prompts.

is there any way to get around this?

Got a problem that I have not encountered before. My little used Compaq Presario died again so I pulled the hard drive out and disposed of the carcass. Then I picked up a P3 lease return w/o a drive in it. I put my drive in and started it up. Windows wouldn't load...said some dll was missing. I figured if one was corrupted there were probable others and just reinstalled XP Pro over it. I can't do a clean install because I have no way to back up any data on my drive just yet.

Anyway, this is not the first time I have installed XP but this time, when we attempted to switch between users, it asked for a password and would not go any further. Naturally, I did not have any passwords set up at that point. In order to switch users, we have to reboot the system. That pretty much defeats the purpose of being able to switch back and forth between users so I would really like to get this fixed.

I checked under CtrlPanel>Power>Advanced and found that Fast Switching was enabled and there was a check mark beside 'Prompt for Password". I removed the check mark but it didn't change anything, it still wants a password to get in.

My XP Pro does not yet have SP2 on it. I do not know any specs for this computer either. And I find that the drive was loaded with bugs and hidden goodies. I reinstalled AdAware and Spybot, updated and then ran them both. AdAware found over 500 items to get rid off and Spybot took over an hour to run. I do not kno... Read more

Hey guys, recent problem here with switching usernames. There's three accounts on my computer, all with no passwords. About three weeks ago a strange thing has been happening: the first time you start your computer and log into one of the three accounts, it'll log you in no problem. Then, when you go and switch users, it will prompt for a password that was never created, and won't let you log in. So I restarted the computer, and then I put some simple passwords on the accounts, thinking it would work. Well, the same thing happened. The first time you log in after a bootup it works, but then you get locked out again once you try switching users again.

This is where it gets even stranger. The problem stopped, you could switch users fine. "Alright!" I said, "it's finally over."

I was wrong, once you restart the computer it went back to locking me out. I'm so confused about this, and it's really frustrating. I've tried virus scans and there appears to be no problems with anything like that. I really need some assistance here.

Answer:Problem With Switching Users.

Try going to users in the control panel and click on switch the way users log on or off.

Whichever way you have it set, change to the other.

After you do that reboot, then go back to users and switch back.

I use to be able to switch users on AOL and see how many e-mails each user had, along with their sign on names. Now working with Windows 7 and I can't see all my AOL usernames. Does anyone have a solution for this?

Answer:Switching users to sign in to AOL

Take off the training wheels, drop AOL and really use the internet. Your ISP can offer you a number of email accounts, or you can use gmail, yahoo, or other free email accounts out there. No one really needs AOL anymore. When AOL was first around, the pure internet was scary for many so AOL put in place simple controls and hid much of went on behind. Long before even XP came around the internet and browsers became more friendly (as long as you had a good antivirus program) and easier to use, basically making AOL obsolete. Today, there is really no reason to use it any longer. Try it with Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, or others. Email accounts can be web based where you log in through your browser similar to the way you probably do today, or one that uses an email client like Outlook, Windows Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird to name a few where you open your email program and it downloads your emails for you and you keep them on your computer. Thunderbird has options for independent multiple email accounts as well as multiple accounts that feed into a single inbox. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Two problems :
1. With W7, as say User 1, I could listen to music or BBC radio via the internet. If I switched to User 2, the music or radio opened as User 1 would continue to play and be heard as User 2. With W10, switching users cuts out any music or radio opened as User 1. Are the listening features under W7 available under W10?
2. With W7, I could copy from documents or spreadsheets opened under User 1 and paste into documents of spreadsheets as User 2. This feature does not work in W10. Can this be fixed?

I was following these article to do so:

Operating system: Windows
Windows version: 7
Bit: 32*
At Step 3, I failed to create a temporary user with administrator privileges through Command Prompt. So, I created it manually through Control Panel with the same exact name and password as instructed.
Then, I proceeded on...
Until Step 6 onwards, problems arise. I changed the username to Default. Step (c) I failed to access the Advanced user management, so I skipped it until Step 7. I also changed the folder's name to Default but it says that there is already a folder named Default existed and asked me if I want to replace.
I then immediately tried to go back to Step 6 and rename it to previous name but failed, so I clicked "Yes" to merge folder and replace the existed folder. At this moment, the only Users folder window frozen. I then realised it happens when I attempted to replace after many times trying.
Also, at the end, I successfully changed back all the names to how previously it was named in Step 6 and Step 7 but I still stuck at user login "Welcome" forever when trying to login to the account I made changes.
Although I made a system restore before doing all these as a precaution, but I fail to restore since I receive an error message saying that it was unsuccessfully maybe due to anti-virus even though I turn off all anti-virus. :(

I noticed an annoying problem when deleting a user account from your PC.

Basically Windows Store app got into a pickle on my main user account. I fixed it with a restore point. But it wasn't working on my wife and son's user accounts. As they barely use them and have little to lose I decided to delete their accounts and then re-create them. The intention being to see if Windows Store worked correctly after doing so (It did!!!).

I deleted the accounts, restarted machine for clean slate and set them up again. All good but something that I noticed and really annoyed me was when I went into network I could see the WMP sharing media projecting my wife's name twice and the same for my son. Looks a bit rubbish. I went on my TV into media sharing and could see the duplicate WMP clients listed on here. So as a test I deleted my son's account again and re-created and sure enough now three WMP shares from his name.

So I looked under C:\users and can see (using my son as an example) three folders ... son's name, son's name-pc name, son's name.000-pc name. So this is why I see the duplications because good old Windows 10 doesn't fully delete the user from C:\users. I tried deleting those old folders but got met with either 'in use' or 'denied - you need admin access'. Of course my account is an administrator so that doesn't compute!!!! I tried taking ownership of those folders and got met with all kinds of resistance but I deleted enough of them to stop the duplicate WMP shares. Basi... Read more

Basi... Read more

Answer:Deleting a user account leaves traces of that user behind in C:\users

Having the same issue here. A user account started misbehaving so I used Settings>Accounts to remove it. But the user *folder* is still in c:\users and won't let me delete - even though I have administrator rights. How can you delete these folders?

Got a problem here with a classroom full of Windows XP Pro PCs, where if I put new shortcuts into All Users\Desktop, when a user logs on they can only see the shortcut as an unknown file type which does not run. Any existing shortcuts in All Users\Desktop work ok, just not any new ones!

The PC's are on a Windows 2003 Server network (with AD) and have local user profiles.

Occasionally, at least once a day, when switching users in XP, either by Fast User Switching, or actually logging out, when trying to sign in as another user, the screen will come up saying that there is no video source, and the computer needs to be rebooted to get the video feed back.
This only started happening after installing the ATI video drivers for X700 (the latest ones that were released on Dec. 20h.) and this was a fresh install of video drivers after a new computer build.
One thing I thought might be wrong is that the motherboard has an onboard video card, and I also put in a PCI-e ATI X700 that is being used as the primary video source.
I have tried a few things but to no avail. Anybody have a similar experience, or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
Andy

I have a PC running WinXP SP2 that has 5 users (2 with admin rights and 3 with user rights). The computer runs fine when a single user is logged on. The problem is that when fast switching to another when someone is already logged in causes the second user desktop and mouse to freeze. The only work around is for the user with the frozen desktop to start the Task Manager and "end" the explorer.exe process that pertains to their account and to then restart it using the Task Manger run command. Then the second user can run computer with not other problems. The odd thing is that if I fast switch back to the 1st user logged into the system there is no problem with their Desktop or mouse. But if I log out this 1st user and sign them back in then the desktop and mouse freeze. This occurs user regardless of what combination or order I use for the users. Basically solo user equals system fine and fast switching to more users creates problems for the added users.

Here is what I have tried so far without fixing the problem (after each effort I would try to Fast Switch user).
1. Verified WinXP fast switching is "turned on". Have turned it off and turned it back on.
2. I have reviewed the Event log for errors. There are no entires current that pertain the problem.
3. I have Norton Antivirus on the PC. No errors found. Have run the PC in standard and in safe mode to run an entire system virus scan.
4. Have run Spysweeper as well in standard mode and safe mode... noth... Read more

Does anyone know of a hack for this? It's not new to Win8 and is by design, according to the definition of the error # left in the applog (see below). This seems like the sort of thing that there would be a workaround for, but I haven't found it yet if so. It's a definite annoyance.

Error 831 (ERROR_FAST_USER_SWITCH)

The connection was terminated because user switch happened.

There are multiple login sessions on the user's computer. The user switched from a login session with an active RAS connection to another session. This resulted in the termination of the connection. Switch back to the original session and make the RAS connection again.

A new install of Windows 7 professional on a new computer. System seems to be working fine. We have two users setup on a workgroup. Every time we switch users even if the other users logs off, the systems ask for a restart. If you tell it later, it pops up after a few minutes until you restart.

Any way to get windows to stop doing this?

I appreciate any help.

Ken

Windows XP Pro SP2

With the exception of the removable 500 GIG hard drive, sound card and Ethernet card all the hardware is new.

The computer had been running slow. So, when I installed my new 1 tb drive, I reinstalled XP and all my software from scratch. Only data was restored from my system backup.

The title really says it all. I had been having problems with my USB mouse. To fix this I have uninstalled the mouse driver and let it reinstall itself at the next boot-up. So far so good. Time will tell whether this has actually worked. However, my previous problem with the computer freezing up while switching user still persists. The freeze usually happens while switching from a user account to the welcome screen.

the only other significant thing I can think of is what when I installed XP on my new HD. As soon as I went to open Internet Explorer, and before anything else was installed or restored, I received the customary message that explorer had encountered a problem and had to shut down!

So, I really don't know what to do next. Thanks for any ideas.

Hi there.
I am encountering a problem on my home computer for which there are three users. When you switch from one user to the other using "Switch User" instead of "Log Off" it's fine the first time around. However, when you switch back to the original user in the same way, my monitor displays an error message, telling me: "Digital out of Range" and gives me some other numbers.
Any ideas?
