No shutdown option from within Lock Screen

Question: No shutdown option from within Lock Screen

Hi

For some reason I have not got the shutdown options within the Lock Screen. They are only in the login but I want to have them in the Lock Screen as I may find myself unable to access login screen sometime in the future. I would like to have that functionality.

I have confirmed the option in my Security Policies is set to disabled but I'm guessing this is not the correct setting. Please advise, as I know it's possible but cannot find the option at the moment. I'm guessing it is most likely in the registry somewhere but have not checked there as yet. Thanks!

Preferred Solution: No shutdown option from within Lock Screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: No shutdown option from within Lock Screen

Press and hold the power button. Or set the power button option, in Advanced Power Options, to Shut Down the system for both AC powered and Battery powered.

Not sure why you wouldn't be able to access the login screen. No need to actually Log In. That option is available from the Log In screen where you type in your password.

Tried it several times and even restart my laptop to try it again, but it still doesn't work. Please help fix this.

Answer:Why isn't the browse picture option available when I chose a picture option on the lock screen?

Go to the Windows Store and check for updates first. There might be an update to the "photos" app. Then open the photos app and let it populate with all your photos first. Then go back to this setting and it should work.

Hello, I have a windows 10 laptop and I am the only user. My administrator username is George Michaels.
Recently when I start the PC, I get 2 options for user login- George Michaels where I click to enter my password and a second option which is George (without the Michaels). When selecting the second option, 2 boxes appear, one for username and one for a password.
I want to delete the second login option since when the PC starts, it automatically takes me to the second George and a pop up says I entered the wrong password. It is annoying I only want my account to appear, not the option to sign in with different username and passwords.
When I go to control panel user settings to delete it, I can't find it since this new George is not a user it is rather just a way to log in with different username and password.

sorry if this has been asked before, but i couldn't find anything about a missing sleep option from the lock screen, only a shut down option.

i recently had to reinstall windows 10 (home), and since i've reinstalled, i've lost my sleep option from the lock screen. i can only tell the computer to sleep from the start menu. when i do lock my computer, the only buttons i have are network, ease of access, and to shut down. there's not even a restart option.

is there a way to add the restart/sleep back in? multiple people live here, so i don't want them being able to access my computer while i'm away at work, and i'd prefer to not have to completely shut down after each session.

A few days ago when booting up my laptop I lost the option to login using my pin. I've tried resetting this in account settings but when I try to add a new pin it has me login with my password and old pin, then stops running the process. If I click the "forgot pin" option the pop-up window tells me to go to the account settings window that I already have open to reset my pin.

Answer:Pin option missing from lock screen

Do you mean that the login screen no longer shows the link to "Sign in options" beneath the space where you enter your Password?

I am currently up to date with all updates for my legal copy of windows 10 pro, I have choosen the windows spotlight feature for my lock screen, however it never activates, I still just get the microsoft glowing blue window screen, any thoughts?

also right below the options for lock screen are options to choose apps for detailed status and apps for quick status, I have also never seen these work anywhere, any help?

Answer:lock screen - windows spotlight option not working

I believe the Windows 10 sign in image must be disabled first, as I've never been able to get a customization to stick without disabling it

To disable the sign in image, open regedit (winkey + R, then regedit) and copy/paste the following into the nav bar:

Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System
Create new DWORD:
DisableLogonBackgroundImage
Set value data: 1
For spotlight, are you setting it simply to allow a custom lock screen image, or do you want to use the actual spotlight feature, which pulls images randomly from Bing depending on your preferences? If it's the latter, someone else will need to chime in as I've never wanted or used that.

However, if it's the former, and you're simply looking to utilize your own custom image for the lock screen:
Navigate to C:\Windows\Web\Screen and paste your custom image
Rename the pasted image to img100.1
You cannot simply replace one of the 6 default images, as SFC and certain updates will delete the file since it won't have parity with the WinSxS component store.I recommend renaming it img100.x, as that will ensure it's the first image shown in Settings - Personalization - Lock screen
In regards to showing app statuses on the lock screen:

If it's an app that shows internet content (Weather, News, Feeds, Facebook, etc), I've always had to open the app once on the desktop and allow it load in order for a firewall rule to be created. Once done, it should show content on the lockscreen. In regards to... Read more

Currently have a Lumia 720 and maximum time out is 5 mins which does not help with golf GPS apps such as Free Caddy as it locks soon after each shot rather than be free flowing. May upgrade to 735 if 'never' function is available - as it seems to be in a random selection of Lumias.

Answer:Does the Nokia Lumia 735 have a 'Never' option for the Lock Screen Timeout?

It's not a random selection but a ROM limited feature. Some ROM variants have it, some don't. Same could be said about the static IP option in Wi-Fi settings and field test mode. I don't have a 720 myself so can't really tell you which ROM had it enabled but if you managed to find one you can always flash to that ROM to get the lacking features, a phone change is really not needed.

Does anyone have an idea where the hell the timer for the lock screen monitor standby option is?

It's not a universal setting under the power options/Turn off display which is set to 30 mins.

When at the lock screen the monitor goes into standby in a minute. I want it to match the 30 min timeout, but for the life of me can't find any timeout setting for the lock screen.

Any ideas?

I've now looked at 9 of this series with a variety of chip and HD specs.  All share the same problem - random screen freeze-up, no operation of keyboard,  mousepad or mouse, often, but not always  followed by  involuntary machine switch off. Because they are all well out of warranty, no help has been available from HP.  All the geek sites have provided useful info, from hardware checks - Speedfan etc., updating drivers for everything including the  AMD graphics cards, cleaning out dust, but none have provided a cure. Both the 500 series and b27SA models are involved. Has HP ever put out any advisories other than what I've already done? Joxter  (TIA)

Hi,

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. I made some googling and found other fix it with Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication set to 0, but I dont have it in registry. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

my laptop sometime "restarts" when i lock it. basically sometimes when i will leave my room even just for a couple of minutes i will lock it using "acer power button" then when i came back i'll just input my password again then i'm back to normal. but sometimes my laptop seems to restart after locking. example i will lock my laptop and go to the nearby store, after i came back i'll input my password it will load then it will start the start up applications which i already closed and my open application are all closed. in short my laptop kinda restarts even i only lock it. it's not that big of a problem but 1 out of 10 of "lock" will have a "restart"-like after inputting password. any clue as to why it happens and solutions guys?

Hi I seen that this should be ticked on other forums but just wanted make sure here as this forum seems to no what your doing more and seems more legit. But does PCI lock need to be ticked or un ticked in boot advanced option. I no that leaving number of processors and maximum memory un ticked uses auto but if I chose to use all 8 processors my self and maximum memory could this improve system just incase auto not using them all or working right?.

Main question though is PCI Clock.
Thanks.

Answer:PCI lock boot advanced option?.

PCI lock or clock? very confusing post.

If that option is what I am thinking is, then do not mess with it unless you want to risk burning your PCI-e devices/corrupt hard disk

Default clock is 100Mhz, and almost only increased by experienced overclockers sometimes to ensure stability. Most of the time it is manually set to 100Mhz so it doesn't scale with FSB (Front Side Bus) speed.

I am not a overclock person though, (I will ask help regarding this in due time) so if I am wrong friends will correct.

I don't know that it is possible; win98 is primarily for general use rather than corporate (like NT / 2k) and is fairly easy to work around.

Enable the system admin account and password protect it.

Intel(R) Core i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz

Purchased in Navy Exchange last year (around July 2013)

I have dropped it once or twice from at most a 3ft fall inside a padded case. I mostly use my computer for school work, some gaming, extensive video/photo editing, internet browsing. I've installed some debatable programs but have been installed long ago. Most of my programs included Microsoft Office, Adobe suite, Steam, iTunes, uTorrent, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Winrar, VLC, etc. But are now gone due to the refresh I had just done last week for prior problems, but still experience problems.

I recently been having issues with my computer where it just won't respond at all. Like today, I had it working for a few hours, but then went out and left my laptop on the lock screen, and came back to it being completely stuck. Completely stuck as in, no keys or clicks would unlock the screen to the login prompt. However, my cursor was fully able to move around the screen, and my caps/num lock buttons work as they display the lights enabling/disabling them. The time when it was stuck was 8:03pm, but the clock was stuck on 7:55. But on the bottom of the front of the laptop, the HDD orange light is not lit up at all, which I believe suggest that the HDD is not reading/properly reading. Oddly e... Read more

Hi!

I have a very weird problem that I haven't been able to find a solution to. There are two parts to this problem, but I think it's the same cause.

1. I have no "lock" option. I can't select lock from the start menu, WIN+L and doing it via ctrl+alt+del doesn't work either.
2. I can't change my password, the change password button is disabled. Again, this doesn't work from ctrl+alt+del.

I've checked the policy manager and the option to disable locking is not enabled. There is an error showing up about Windows Location something when starting the Policy Editor.

This does however only seem to affect my account, when testing with another account it all works just fine (both local admin accounts).

Any ideas as to what might cause this?

Answer:No option to lock computer or change password

I think the settings in the Group policy editor should be "Not configured" for both the remove password and the remove lock settings.

The error about the location is one that MS have not got around to fixing yet. You can sort it out by looking at the following:

As far as I know, the 600x is the most modern laptop that still has drivers for win 3.1 and DOS 6.22.  I like DOS 6.22 cause some of my favorite old programs don't like and version of windows, and dos 6.22 can be run without windows. Most DOS based programs have options for sound or no sound, and they lock up if I select the sound option.  I also have 560x and a 600 and neither have this problem. I would prefere to use the 600x because it can do things a 560x and 600 can't do. On the same 600x I also run win M. E. and win2000, each in a seperate patition using partition magic, and also on the 560x and the 600. This sound problem seems to be peculiar to the 600x. Hope someone has a solution.

Can anyone tell me how to eliminate the lock screen preview and bypass the 'Sign In' button on the lock screen?

I often put my computer to sleep then to bring it back (in Windows 7) I would simply hit the space bar and turn on my mouse and it would go straight to my desktop. Now, I hit the space bar turn on my mouse, and it takes me to the lock screen preview then I hit the space bar and it takes me to a lock screen where I have to click 'Sign In' even though I have no password set.

I'm guessing I'll no longer be able to hit the spacebar, turn on my mouse and go directly to the desktop but if I can hit the spacebar, turn on the mouse, then hit the space bar one last time, that would be satisfactory.

I've tried searching through the forum but can't see anyone who has a similar issue.

I can access the lock screen settings and I can see all available apps and have set a detailed status app and a couple of less detailed ones. However, when I actually get to the lock screen after having set the apps to appear, there is nothing but the time and date and WiFi in bottom-right corner.

Could this be because I am logging in locally rather than using a MS account?

Good afternoon,

I just did a clean install of 7 to fix errors with my laptop, and it fixed one, but not the other main issues,
My caps lock, and number lock button on the keyboard don't have a light on it and the pop up that is supposed to pop up doesn't show up on screen.
I figured by doing a clean install it would all magically appear again... I was wrong, I have tweaked everything I could think of looking/trying to change setting from the keyboard in control panel, (including messing around with ease of use) and Gateways so called "support" area was of no help, as well as googling the issue has led me down a path of useless tips, I have also looked on this forum for help.

Any help in this area would be GREATLY appreciated!!

T470 20HE model Windows 10 64-bitFn key actions are displayed with on-screen icons/symbols (Volume/Mute, Mic, Display brightness), however when I select Caps lock or Num lock, there is no on-screen display.I re-installed the latest Lenovo Power Management Driver and Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 10 but no success. When I open the Display Settings >> Display adapter properties >> Screen configurations, the section "Indicator settings for Numlock and Capslock" is missing. Here are the Lenovo instructions: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/HT002122 See attached file for comparison of the Screen configurations settings and my actual settings. Interestingly, in the Lenovo Hotkey Features Integration for Windows 10 (64-bit) - Laptop 9.0.07 (current version) Readme.txt, (https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n1wvu28e.txt ) there is a reference to a fix in the 9.0.0.6 as follows:<9.0.0.6>

I have just bought a HP Probook 430 G3 and I have the same problem. I usually need the number keyboard so I bought the notebook taking into account that just pressing the FN key and any the letter "j" for example, I would get the number "1".

I have looked in the BIOS and there is no option to FN key except "Swap between Fn an Ctrl". I think that something is going wrong. Why I say this? If I do not activate the Bloq Num (F12) this are the actions and there results:

Fn + "-" = "+".
Fn + "" = "-".
Fn + "p" = "*"
Fn + "Zero" = "/"

But...

Fn + "." = nothing
Fn + "m" = nothing
Fn + "j" = nothing
Fn + "k" = nothing
Fn + "o" = the cursor moves to the right.

I think that something in the configuration is working bad.

Please help!

Answer:Elitebook 1040 G3 - FN Key "lock" / "invert" option not avai...

Hi Nacholo Yeah you are correct. With "num-lock" set to "on" all secondary functions of the num-keyboard work as printed on the keys, but i.e. if I just preess "FN + m" nothing happens but it should present me with a "0". So that seems to be a bug. However I would still like to get a "FN-Lock" functionality as all compertitors have that and I am just used to it - it saves so much time and effort espescially if you work one-handed quite often.I also cannot find a valid reason not to include such a common feature !?

Hi I have a brand new 1040 G3 EliteBook and I really would like to lock the Fn-Key so that I do not have to press two keys each time I want to adjust screen brightness or volume. In the BIOS there is no entry for "action keys" - only to switch "ctrl" and "FN" keyThe combo "FN+left alt + left shift + CAPS" does also not work  So I did contact HP Support via the HP homepage and after some time I did get the answer that this option just is not available on my Elitebook.  I am really, I mean really, suprised and astonishedby this. This is a common feature on every Notebook (I can't remember coming across one that did not support this in the last years) and the direct competitors to the Elitebook line (Lenovo Thinkpads, Dell Latitude and Toshiba businees line) all do have this feature. So I really wonder what has come upon HP engeneers to just ignore that feature for the Elitebook lineup   !? - would be like BMW would say: "sorry automatic headlights just isn't available on the 7 series" - what !?  So please HP think about this EDIT: What I also do not understand is the inconsistency within one company, some HP notebooks ahve that feature, others just don't !? So I would like to aks HP: Is it bug that its missing in the 1040 BIOS? thx for reading

Hello there. I am wondering if there is a way to 'lock in' my viewing option choice, when I am viewing images. I would like to view all my images on the large option. It never stays set there. I need to constantly change this back if I close that folder and return. It randomly chooses for me, usually the details option. So annoying. It's getting tedious.

I can't seem to get my computer to lock using the power button.  I followed the directions ...right click toolbar, click properties, click start menu, under "power button action", choose "lock".  I clicked apply and nothing.  I restarted the computer... and nothing.  I even set what the power button does in the battery/power configuration to "do nothing" (there is no "lock" option in the power option).  Anyone know why it doesn't work? Additionally, I am very disappointed about the function key / ctrl key swap in BIOS.  I assumed the swap would enable the ctrl key on the right side of the keyboard but it does not.  So I am still stuck using TWO hands to do something as simple as adjust my screen brightness (which I do consistently because I have very sensitive eyes).  I then tried the function lock option in BIOS, and of course that doesn't work either as all other keys won't function with the lock in place.   And one other gripe is that the lock feature requires you to press enter to lock (so a three-key process and requires BOTH hands to work). It's nice to have the option to just press one key once to get the computer to lock (like my old HP).   Anyone know any software that can allow me to adjust screen brightness or lock the computer with the press of ONE key?  Or at the very least allow me to do it with one hand?   This is my first Thinkpad and from a productivity/efficiency standpoint, I'm ... I try to shut down my computer, the OS is windows XP Professional.

It goes to the normal shutdown screen. "Windows is shutting down" And then locks up... after a minute, all of my peripherals shut off (mouse and keyboard lights go off), and then it BSoDs me...

What kind of information do you guys need to help me out, ask and I will tell.

It's quite the nuisance not being able to shut down in an orderly fashion, and I do not know if it is having an adverse effect on my computer... For safety's sake, I would like to resolve this problem

Ask away to help me isolate and solve this problem,

PS. I have reformatted once, and that did NOT solve this problem.
I have also taken apart the PC and put it back together. MY BIOS and drivers are up to date. And... I have the latest windows updates.

Ok I've been suffering this issue with Windows 10 for as long as I can remember, and it's stopping me using it as the primary OS.

In short I have two, intermittent issues which nothing I do seems to resolve.

1: After waking up from sleep and typing my username password and hitting return, the screen goes black. Cursor moves, Windows + P operates (Screen options do appear from the right) but doesn't actually make any difference, and I'm stuck having to hard reset because ctrl alt del doesn't work either. This isn't an every time issue, hence googling seems to fail miserably because all the examples are people getting it every time. This, for me, is a 3 in 10 regularity.

2: Logging a user off occasionally sees the lock screen ... locking up. Ironically. Mouse moves, and power button DOES work but that's all that works.

These issues are plaguing me and I just cannot fix them - endless googling has left me empty handed, and I've tried disabling SLI. No help. I've tried disabling apps. No help. Nothing I do makes any difference and event viewer doesn't seem to reveal anything useful either.

Anyone got any idea how I can resolve this?

Hi All.

I have a new one installed Lenovo T450s with Windows 10 Entreprise.
I have joined the machine into a domain without some active GPO.
When I'm at home or sitting at a customer and must unlock the screen, it takes a war! It is as if searching for the DNS server for my AD domain as my PC is a member of.
In Windows 7 or Windows 8 there is no problem.
This is not a problem in Windows 7 or Windows 8.
Some have suggestions?

Thank you

I have administrative rights to this machine. Was there a hack that transpired or was it a virus? I could not get the NIC working since somehow when I got there the NIC has an exclamation mark in Device Manager -- that's why I can't update the virus definitions

I hope someone has encountered this so we can avoid a total re-install.

However when I power down I get a blue screen (not the blue screen of death with an error message) but a pale blue screen. At that point the system hangs. I have to reboot to safe mode, run disk scan and then power down. The other think that will sometimes happen when I go though this process, is the next time I power up. Sometimes I get a message that my last power down of window was incorrect and I have to hit the radio bar on my screen to get back my desk top. Any ideas. I can supply any othere info you may need. Got a new comp recently, 660S, it has the annoying habit of lighting the Num. Lock on my (wired, USB) Keyboard at Shutdown only way so far to switch off the light is to unplug the keyboard which is becoming boring!
BTW the light would remain on even though the comp. is shut down until it is restarted - then it goes out!

Answer:Shutdown of W7 triggers Num. Lock on K/B

Think I found the answer, I removed my k/b from the USB Hub that I was using and plugged it directly into the computer (only available port was USB3) now the light comes on when shutting down but goes off when the comp completely shuts down! It comes back on again at start up but goes out when OS finishes loading - I can live with that!

In Vista Ultimate, classic view, when I go to perform the normal shutdown, I get this little menu, with "Sleep" as the default setting:

I'd like to change that, probably in the registry, from "Sleep" to "Restart".
To restart the system is the only reason I ever go to that menu.
To just shut down the system, I use a shortcut Icon on the Desktop.
I would NEVER want to put the system to Sleep.

Any ideas would be welcome. Maybe even a script?

Thank You,
The Shadow

Answer:Change Default Shutdown Option??

HeyTheShadowFl

You can create a shortcut on your desktop for restarting your system

1. Right click on your desktop and select New

2. Select Shortcut

3. In the box for Type Your Location Of Your Item type the following:

Shutdown.exe -r -t 00

4. In the box for Type A Name For This Shortcut call it like Restart or something you would like

5. Click Finish, Right Click on the icon and select Properties and then select Advanced

6. Select to Run As Administrator to make sure it runs first time

You should now be able to double click the icon and restart your computer

Hi,

I have a form in Access '03 which contains an option group with 3 options (radio buttons). I would like the option selected to determine whether it is possible or not to enter data in 2 text boxes, eg the selection will control which particular box is locked.

There are 3 options:

Option 1
Option 2
Option 3
There are the following outcomes based on selection:

Option 1 locks TextBoxAVG but keeps TextBoxHist unlocked
Option 2 Locks TextBoxHist but keeps TextBoxAvg unlocked
Option 3 Locks TextBoxHist but keeps TextBoxAvg unlocked
I realise that options 2 and 3 are the same - this is not a typo and is unavoidable in this case as I really need the 3 options.

I have seen how a check box can be used in similar circumstances but it isn't suitable when there are 3 options as in this case, see http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/30536106/check-box-to-control-edit.aspx

Any ideas or even solutions would be appreciated big time!

Best,
RustyG

Hi,

I seem to have a problem with my paths in windows xp pro. I'm not too sure what it is that has caused the problem, but it is hindering my use of my computer quite badly.

Whenever I run command line prompts such as ping or net, I get an error saying

'net' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

The most recent cause is when I'm trying to run a development MySQL server on my machine and the command line prompt is C:\>NET START MYSQL, to begin the instance. Its the same for any ping commands I run, which means I can't network the PC with anything either. I can temporarily solve the problem by going into the windows registry and navigating to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control \SessionManager\Environment

and changing the path entry 'type' from REG_SZ to REG_EXPAND_SZ. However, whenever I shut down the PC, the path entry goes back to REG_SZ. Is there some way I can lock this change in the registry values, so it stays the way I instruct in the future, and I don't have to keep changing it every time I want to connect my computer to just about anything?

Hi Experts,When we want to lock the computer we do the following:Ctrl Alt Del(A dialog box appears)Lock computerWhen we want to unlock the computer we do the following:Ctrl Alt Del(A dialog box appears)Key in passwordEnterIs there any possibility in the registry (or somewhere) of XP Professional menu to:1.      automate the above,2.      automate a shutdown at specified time? Thanks.

Answer:Auto lock, unlock and shutdown

1) What do you want to automate? Lock? Well, you can use also the windows key+L (the L key). To unlock, you have to press ctrl+alt+del and enter the username and password (username, in case you want to log off the user which locked the computer). You can't automate this -- but you can disable the lock option (why do you want to do it?). Are you in a domain? Then talk to network administrator/system administrator. It's your home computer? Then use the simple logon options, without passwords.A simple way to lock the computer it's to set the computer to lock when enters in screen saver mode.2) For shutdown at a specified time: you may create a bat file, which should contain a line like:shutdown -s -f -t 60(see shutdown command in windows)And then, add a new scheduled task which runs that bat file at the specified time.

After trying to register at their forum, I finally gave up and hope to get help here.

This may be a stupid question, but Slawdog Smart Shutdown has an option to lock the computer. What does this mean? If I lock it, how do I get it unlocked?

I'm thinking this might be a good feature to use for a 16 year old grandson who gets up after we go to bed and gets on my computer. If I could lock it so he couldn't use it without my input, that would be great. Am I on the right track here, or does it mean something totally different?

Thanks

You really dont need anything to lock him out. Try giving your account a password and when done on the pc simply log out and he cannot get on unless you let him on. Also you can set up to prompt for a password at the screensaver settings screen.

I am having problems with this computer shutting down, booting and even sometimes while surfing the internet. It locks up about 50% of the time shutting down, and locks up while booting maybe 25% of the time. Sometimes while on the internet a web page will just freeze and upon pressing cntrl/alt/delete once I get the message that Internet Explorer is not responding.
When I choose *End Task* it freezes the system and I have to hit the reset button on the case.

These problems started when I installed my MSI G4 MX440 card a few weeks back. I have updated to the newest drivers for the video card but that has not made any difference.

Should I reinstall Win98SE on top of itself to get the drivers and software back to normal or will that work?

My system is a 400 MHz Celeron, Super Micro P6SBA Mobo, 256MB Micron RAM, WD 80 GB HDD, MSI G4MX440 video card, Diamond Monster Sound MX 300 sound card.

I appreciate any help

I would rather the default shutdown option be "Shut Down", instead of "Sleep". As of yet I havent found anything on it. Is it one of those obvious things I keep missing? Nothing found in control panel -> power options that I can find.

For now, I've set up a kluge like so:
Created a shortcut to "C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 10" (hard shutdown with a ten second delay), and dragged it to my start menu.

It seems to work fine, but wouldnt it be nice to just adjust the existing shutdown option?

Any insight appreciated!

Hi We have recently migrated several T410 model 2537,  the option to undock is not there for this model but exsists on other older models we are not seeing any driver issues in device manager. The docker functions fine and allows all services through.. Any ideas ?

Answer:T410 - No Undock option from the shutdown menu in W7

It is no longer there, since the new dock doesn't have legacy ports like serial, parallel, etc. So the new laptops and series 3 dock supports hot docking, so basically you don't have to eject them to undock them.

You could press Ctrl+Alt+Del instead of Ctrl+Shft+Esc to get to shutdown button
Or if you are specifically needing to do it from task manager for whatever reason you could click file>run to execute a shutdown script possibly ?

Answer:AT SHUTDOWN the unit Satellite 2400 lock up

Hello

The base system device is usually the PCMCIA slot or card reader or both. Some laptop manufactures bundle a set of drivers and call it "Chipset" even though it includes more than the chip set.
I assume that you didn?t install the chipset driver or you have install it but in the false order. The chipset driver should be installed at first.

Well, the windows want shut down because some background processes are running or because of a OS malfunction. I assume that this problem doesn?t occur with the Toshiba recovery CD because all drivers are installed properly.

About the BIOS procedure:
Please check this Toshiba page. There you will find a instructions how to update the BIOS.
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=B IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

But please note: The wrong BIOS or a wrong procedure can damage the mainboard. Firstly you should check if the clean installation with the Recovery CD will solve the problem before you start the BIOS update!!!

Bye

I was trying to help a friend w/ his laptop w/ Vista (which I have not used before) and when we shut it down, I accidently hit the LOCK icon and closed the lid. When he tried to restart, the system appears to come back up, but then the screen goes black. I tried CTL-ALT-DEL, but nothing happened, still black screen, but there is lots of disk activity going on. We did a hard shutdown (holding power button down) and rebooted, getting an error screen and then booting in safe mode. Can do that, but don't know what to modifiy or try and change. He says he never created a password, has only one account on the computer which is an administrator account. When we reboot into std OS, same old thing, black screen after just a flash of the main screen. HELP????

Other users on my Computer always do shutdown and my background work on my account gets lost. This creates me mad. So, I need a working solution.
Thank You.

Hi, I upgraded from win7 to win8 and i had notice that i don't have fast startup and hibernation option in shutdown options. I checked in command prompt and i have thisand . Please could you help me? Laptop starting slower then my 7 year old Toshiba running Win8. Is this coused by lack of Ram. I have 6gb.
Thanks for any answers.

Answer:no fast startup and hibernation option in shutdown options

Majority of us turn off Hibernate by using the following command: "powercfg /hibernate off". You can turn it on by doing a "powercfg /hibernate on". The reason is that there are too many machines that do not play nicely with the Hibernate feature.

You are okay with 6GB RAM. What your problem may be is incompatible RAM modules. You would have to run Speccy and post the results on here. You can also go to tuxboot.org and download a copy of Tuxboot, create on a USB Pendrive a copy of "Clonezilla", which will allow you to run a Memtest on your RAM modules, to look for possible bad or incompatible RAM sticks.

Hi! So, I've upgraded to Windows 8 RTM this weekend and I'm having this problem: Every time I boot the PC (shutdown or restart), the Num Lock key is off. Since my password uses numbers, and I'm pretty used to type it with Num Lock, I'd like to keep it always on. It was fine on Windows 7. Now, I've searched for it, and there is the "InitialKeyboardIndicators" key on regedit. I have changed values for all of them to "2", and it didn't work. My BIOS say to keep it always on. Is there anything else that I'm missing?

Answer:Num Lock always activated on lock screen

Netplwiz, or tap num lock before starting password entry.

Besides those, you can check to make sure keyboard is plugged in directly to motherboard instead of add-on card or something.

Hi
After I removed a theme pack called "Vista OSX" from my pc running vista home premium, the options such as shutdown, restart are missing from the start menu. And moreover, nothing shows up even if I press Alt + F4. Is there anyway to restore them back? I already tried System Restore but it fails to restore back to an earlier point.

ps. I screen shot the start menu and attached it.

Hi rapster88 . .

Are you updated w/ Vista SP1?

What was the problem with the system restore? Do you have dual-boot Vista/XP?

Hi all,Over the past few months I've been using an X200 Tablet with Windows 7.  Since I've had it I've noticed problems with it not 'sleeping' properly and the ability to Lock, Restart or Shutdown the computer going missing. I?ve done some troubleshooting and narrowed down a scenario where I can repeat the problem 100% of the time.  -       Setup computer with USB device (a keyboard and mouse will do)-       Boot and logon-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Sleep the computer-       Wake the computer-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Unplug any of the USB devices At this point the computer can?t be locked, and if you send it to sleep it will essentially crash meaning you have to do a hard shutdown (or as has happened a few times, wait for the battery to run out in your laptop bag...).  I?ve tried different USB ports on the computer and different mice.  I've updated the BIOS and all the drivers, I've even rebuilt it from the Windows DVD.  Is something anyone else has experianced?  If you have a X200 tablet does the same thing happen to you? T

Answer:Help - Repeatable X200T USB, Sleep and Lock/Restart/Shutdown crashes

Out of the blue, I happened to install this Microsoft hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976755), and today was the first day that, upon docking, I was able to lock my laptop, and I assume it will go to sleep at the end of the day when I take it home. In checking this forum, I see that this fix was suggested here some time ago:http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/X200-Tablet-Win7-Black-screen-freeze-on-... Hope this helps.

I've been using Windows 10 for just over one year. For some reason the Lock Screen/Sign-in screen shows three users. All three are me in three iterations. I find also that when trying to save some excel and word documents I receive messages saying that i am not allowed to save to this folder or that folder. I am able to save to the desk top and then drag and drop the document into the folder that I need to place it in. I know that this must have something to do with "permissions". Not sure how to fix that. One of the accounts that shows up is the initial account that I created back when hotmail.com was around. Any ideas/advice on these issues? When i updated to Windows 10, pretty certain that i followed all of the instructions, although that has been over 1 year now. Thank you in advance...cheers and beers to all!

New laptop lenovo ideapad from january i run a lot of programs for engineering on it works great. But it seems after a while online listening to music and browsing flash/shockwave whatever begins to crash if i exit out of chrome i cannot re open but i can open ie. running mcafee enterprise and antivius and have a malware detection program i've had similar setups in the past and never had much of a problem or at least anything i couldn't handle myself. so when i go to restart after these problems it sits at the shutdown screen and the swirl timer keeps swirling until i get pissed and force shutdown holding the button. is this a problem with win 7 os or is there something still running in the backround that i can't seem to find?

Answer:windows 7 restart or shutdown stays at shutdown screen

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Just as a test, uninstall McAfee antivirus tool and install MSE.

You might also try shutting down after a clean start:
