Settings Still Shows Notification Option for Uninstalled Application

Question: Settings Still Shows Notification Option for Uninstalled Application

"Settings->Notifications & actions->Show notifications from these apps" here shows an entry for an uninstalled application (not a Store app).

The uninstall looks to have been clean. There are no registry or file system entries.

Anyone know why/where this entry still appears and how to remove it?

Preferred Solution: Settings Still Shows Notification Option for Uninstalled Application

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi
I Have office 2003 running on Vista home premium. I don't use outlook and kept getting updates for it so I decided to uninstall it. That's all fine but now I keep getting annoying update notification for microsoft outlook. I may be missing something, but I can't see where I can choose to ignore this update. Can someone please tell me how I can select to NOT be notified of certain updates.

Thanks in advance

What to do? I have rebooted of course. As you mention registry, if you are comfortable with registry and you know what you are doing then try modifying the registry..else DO NOT.
Check HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotify and look for IconStreams and PastIconsStream and this contains the notification icon cache.
I'm not sure but to remove this cache, I think there will be small programs like Tray Cache Cleaner or something like that..please check. Or check the free tool from TheWindowsClub if it has got that option.

I unintalled MagicISO and everything had deleted but one file, misosh64.dll. I have been trying for over an hour and have googled the issue, but nothing has worked so far. When I right click and delete the file it tells me I can't because the file is open in Windows Exporer, even when nothing else is open. I tried using the program ShellExView to disable it, but that didn't work either. I tried using the black cbm box with commands to delete it that I found on the internet, but I just got access denied. I really want this file gone but nothing seems to be working, help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Open Task Manager and check Processes, Startup and Services tabs to see if they are running, if so End Task or Disable them, then try uninstalling as you have before.

Hi! I have a problem with start menu search results in windows 10. I decided to switch over from MS Office 2007 to Office 2016. I uninstalled the previous version and I also used CCleaner to delete all the old entries possible. As you see on the picture (001):
I have Office 2016 already installed. However, when I search for any office app in start menu, I have something like this:
This shortcut is inactive. I can't even click it or so. It's just there stucked all the time and when I pin it to the start menu...
...all I have is an empty tile with folder location. This folder doesn't even exist anymore because it has been removed during the process.
Has anyone ever encountered similar problem? I've already tried Microsoft Start Menu Troubleshooting Tool and also tried to reindex the start menu content. Nothing work :( I would be grateful for any piece of advice.

Answer:Win 10 search shows already uninstalled programs.

The start menu tile is just a short can you not just delete it?

Hello everyone,

This is my first post (after my presentation) in this forum. I was wondering if someone knowledgeable could help me decipher the HijackThis log file.

Background: I have been experiencing the famous Google redirect issue on Firefox and Chrome over the last week after an aggressive infection that started with fake Windows 7 pop up notifications telling me that there was an error with my hard drive. I was able to find and remove several infections but the Google redirect issue persisted. Now it seems to be gone (it hasn't happened in the last 50+ searches) but after running HijackThis I find a lot of things that look out of place. Here's the log:

I recently came back from Spain where a friend asked me to uninstall Norton 2007. I did it the normal way through add/remove which didn't actually uninstall it properly. I then reinstalled it went to Norton and downloaded their uninstaller. This seemed to do it but afterwards I couldn't install another Firewall or Antivirus without crashing his computer.Looking in the Security Center in Control Panel, it still showed as Antivirus and Firewall were still Norton. Can anybody else explain how you are to rid the computer of Norton Completely please. I tested it at Shields Up and his computer passed all the tests.

When you say uninstalled? I?m assuming you also pulled it out/disconnected it? If you did? see if it's in your device manager under the Hardware tab try to locate it and disable it. Also check in your bios see if it's still there.

Well basically,
i uninstalled "Fable Lost Chapters" because it was using up space
on my drive. So i uninstalled the game, half way through the uninstallation
the PC lagged so i used task manager to close the uninstaller.

My first mistake was right there, after when i tried to uninstall it, it said
i had finished but everything was clearly still there. So i read around the forums,
and i used a force uninstaller which worked fine, except the "fable lost chapters"
icon was still in the "uninstall or change program" windows, with no stats,
(ie how big it is, last altered ect). Game was gone but the value was still there.

So i fished around the regeditor hoping to find it, but no luck there.
I have also tried using "C CLeaner" to delete the entry but it gives me this
error message "Cannot delete MSI installer" no idea what that means.

Anyone know a solution. Oh yeah anyone who helps will get +rep

Thank You
Regards
DAZZ(^.^)

Hi,

I just restored my Vista HP laptop to factory defaults using the included backup CD (nothing was wrong, I just wanted to setup XP and Vista on the same laptop and know that installing an older version with a newer one present can mean trouble). I want to use a different security program than McAfee, but the restored image comes with a McAfee trial preinstalled. So after uninstalling it via the Control Panel, and after downloading and installing the Product Removal Tool from McAfee's site, Security Center still shows that McAfee's firewall and antivirus are running and up to date. Vista did startup Windows Firewall and Windows Defender, so it must realize there's nothing protecting the computer at the moment. I searched the registry with regedit to find any entries with McAfee in the search string and found/removed only one entry (aside from the removal tool, which was not touched), which didn't help. I'd go to McAfee and ask them, but I don't want to bug them since I don't plan on using their products anytime soon.

Any other ideas? Thanks much.

Since installing Windows 10 a few weeks ago, I've been trying to set it up to show mail notifications for incoming mail in the action center. The last thing I tried was to uninstall the mail app (using PowerShell), which included also uninstalling the calendar app. After reinstalling the mail app and calendar, still not getting mail notifications, big surprise. But, now have another problem. When I go to settings > system> notifications & actions; the option to turn off/on notifications for the calendar is gone, even though the calendar is installed. Any idea why it's not showing up in settings after the reinstall? The mail app is there, switched to "On," but still not receiving incoming mail notifications. In the mail app, notifications are set to "on." Not sure if there's anything else to try for the mail notifications, but would like to get the option back to turn on notifications for the calendar, as it did work before.

I uninstalled Spybot Search and Destroy almost 2 months ago and one of my desktop's user account still displays the application's icon in the Windows 7 system tray. To make matters worse, the icon is interactive. If I click it, I can still access the 'White and Black list' or something of that nature. The application is not in my control panel's list of installed software either so I don't know how to get rid of it. Before meddling around with my startup applications using msconfig (since I've read here on TSF that it isn't sound to do that unless using an specific application startup tool), I'd like to know if anyone can offer me some helpful remedial suggestions.

I know for a fact that Windows Defender did not have an icon in the notification tray/taskbar in Windows 8/8.1. I'm talking about the bottom right and if you have/had Win 7 using MSE you would have the icon (green house with checkmark and flag) if enabled.

When Windows Defender did not have the same functionality for its icon people were really up in arms and many threads talked about hacks to get it to appear. Well all of a sudden I noticed that it was available and if I select "Show icon and notifications" under customize it appears. If I hover over it it shows "PC Status: Protected" just like MSE.

Does anyone else see this? When did it happen? I would have thought I would see some mention of it somewhere since it was a feature (lacking) that really bothered people.

edit: There is even a tutorial here on how to add it. And it says "Windows Defender does not have a icon in the notification area, but it does run in the background by default and will give you a notification if it detects anything."

Windows Defender - Create Shortcut in Windows 8

I'm pretty sure it is not showing because it detected something. Like I said its showing just like the MSE icon.

Hey guys,

I am looking for 2 things which im having much difficulty, the first is during a disk format of a cd-r or dvd-r the OS displays a notification icon for the process until it is complete. My problem here is the system runs in a program that is kept in the forground and there is no access normally for the start bar or windows. During the time that the notification icon is in the task bar though it allows them full access to the start bar. Is there anyway to disable this notification icon for the formatting process?

My second question. Is there a way to auto select like a flash drive for burning everytime.

Ok so found out that during a format, which i did a dvd-r to keep the notifcation open longer that i could then modify the notifications and see that process to hide it and it looks like it stays hidden now to not pop the start bar to the front of the program.

So now i just need to find a way to auto select like a flash drive for burning everytime.

Thanks

Answer:Notification icon change and another auto select option

You can add your Usb (flash drive) to the 'send to' menu with Send To Toys
:: gabrieleponti.com ::
Then send the file you want to burn, to your flash drive.

Hello everyone, Been reading this thread to keep me sane while waiting for my W520.  It came today and so far i think it's perfect!  I however am not. Even though i am an experienced computer user, i have never really used Windows 7 other than helping others troubleshoot some issue or another. So, i was cruzing around and while in control panel / programs / programs and features.. looking through the list i decided, who knows why to 'look at' one of the intel apps installed by default.  My braind said 'theres no way a double click could be bad' and did it.... ughh.....  .5 seconds later, its gone.  Stupid yes.  Stupid me.  Stupid 1 double click and an app is uninstalled with no confirmation; crazier.  But anyway, it was called (i'm already forgetting), i think Intel Control Center.  Can someone confirm the name and let me know where i can find it.  Hopefully Lenovo, but i didnt see it browsing around the support sight. Here's what i have left (Intel-wise):Intel(R) Identity Protection TechnologyIntel(R) PROSet/Wireless WifFi SoftwareIntel HD Graphics DriverIntel Management Engine Componants No i didnt make any system restore yet!!! Thanks,

Go to Solution.

Answer:New W520, Windows 7 newbie mistake (uninstalled application by accident) - please i need info

Take a deep breath.  There's very little you can screw up uninstalling Intel software in control panel. First of all, everything you need is likely under the SWTOOLS directory on your machine.  Second, you can still make the factory recovery disk set from the Lenovo applet in Control Panel.  Do that soon.  Third, the Intel Control Center is an optional control application that can be installed with various Intel drivers.  It's totally optional.  For instance, if you install the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) drivers, it's one of the options on the Custom install. The core drivers from Intel you need are the Optimus video drivers, WIFI drivers assuming you have the 6300 or other Intel chipset, and the Intel Ethernet drivers.  For a clean install you would also need the Intel Chipset drivers but I'm sure you didn't uninstall them.  You can download everything from support.lenovo.com.

I initially had problems with my browser. I couldnt view secure websites (htts) to check my email accounts and perform transactions on my laptop. But I could perfectly browse the web normally and access my email accounts from my mobile. That assured me the services were working perfectly fine and the problem lied with my internet.

I deleted my cookies, cleared my cache, cleared and installed dll's, checked my firewall on my laptop.
My only option left was to uninstall my Norton Internet Security and re-install it.

That helped with the initial problem (not accessing secure websites) but uninstalling Norton, came with another problem. My wireless settings were deleted, my wireless detection switch button on my laptop (Compaq Presario) is not working at all. DEAD.

How do I proceed to set up wireless if my wireless detection settings have been wiped off?

Kind regards

About a week ago I had to do a hard reset on my lumia 520 after it starting acting weird. Now it seems fine except there are no notification setting for my apps. The four default ones are there (Hotmail, Messaging, Store, and Phone) but for apps like 6snap, kik, twitter, etc. there is no option for them so i'm not getting any notifications. Has anyone and this problem before and is there a fix for it. I've gone though all my setting and I don't see anything that would cause this

Answer:Why is there no notification settings?

Hi Jordan, Are you using WP 8.1?
For most of the other apps, you need to receive a message first and then you can modify the settings within the notification center.
However there are some notifications within the app themselves.
For twitter for example when you add account, it asks if you want notifications (and what type).
6snap, the notification settings are within that app itself.

After that I did a full sysem scan with Norton Antivirus 2004.After doing all this, my computer started normally, everything looks fine but when I double click on any drive in My Computer, it gave me "Open With" dialog box. Hello,
Most of the time I am away from the computer when the AVG completes its scan. Today I was here, but was on another webpage when it ran. When I went back to the desktop, there was an AVG message that said VIRUS FOUND, and indicating that the virus had not been healed or isolated.

I opened the AVG control center to see what it was, and found that there seems to be 25 infected files on each scan going all the way back to 6/07. I also checked the virus vault, and there is nothing listed as being saved there today, everything there goes back to 2005.

How do I get rid of this now? I have looked at everything AVG has, and I don't even know what kind of virus it is, nor the path. Can anybody help me?

Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days since you scanned your computer with HijackThis, we will need a new HijackThis log. If you have not already downloaded Random's System Information Tool (RSIT), please download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random which includes a HijackThis log and save it to your desktop. If you have RSIT already on your computer, please run it again. Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT. Click Continue at the disclaimer screen. Please post the contents of log.txt. Please post your HijackThis log as a reply to this thread and not as an attachment. Hi,

I've just started having this issue where my anti-virus (NOD32 2.5) flags a trojan threat each time I open or close an application. This occurs for any application I open. I've pasted an example of the threat report below. This one I got after opening Firefox.

<<<copy/paste>>>

Time Module Object Name Threat Action User Information
12/19/2009 17:21:11 PM AMON file C:\Documents and Settings\Shaun\Application Data\Macromedia\Common\5868201819.exe a variant of Win32/Riern.B trojan quarantined - deleted SHAUN\Shaun Event occurred on a new file created by the application: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe. The file was moved to quarantine. You may close this window.

<<<end copy/paste>>>

I've carried out a full system scan (again using NOD32) on Safe Mode which flagged out a .dll which was apparently infected with Riern.D which I subsequently chose to delete. Unfortunately, I didn't take note of the .dll and NOD32 did not save a log of that scan.

Hope someone can help me out with this.

I'm running WinXP, by the way. I'm not too sure what other info might be needed to help troubleshoot but I'll provide as necessary.

Thank you for your time!!

Regards,
Shaun

Remove unnecessary quote and split to its own topic. ~ OBNOD32 keeps flagging a file called f5dd001c19.exe (which i googled and couldn't find anything about) every time i start up an application. I'm pretty sure it's responsible for my VLC media player crashing whenever i try to launch it. It's a Win32/Riern.B Trojan apparently (which is how i found this thread), also found in the \Macromedia\Common\ folder. This is my most recent report:Time - 20/12/2009 00:09:18File - C:\Documents and Settings\---\Application Data\Macromedia\Common\f5dd001c19.exeThreat - a variant of Win32/Riern.B trojanAction - cleaned by deleting - quarantinedInformation - Event occurred on a new file created by the application: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe.I did a full scan yesterday but nothing was found. I've got the same problem.
Google search on the riern.b trojan give little to no assistance other than to say this trojan is "high risk"
ESET keeps it in check but does not remove the trojan.
Tried CounterSpy by Sunbelt and it found no problems even though it claimed to remove the reirn.b trojan
Any assistance with this is much appreciated.
I'm also running XP
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what you're talking about - but am guessing it has to do with something that's an add-on for Internet Explorer.

Open up Internet Explorer and select the "Tools" menu item.
Then select the "Manage Addons" selection and check all of the addon types to see if it's located there. If it is, remove/disable it.

I'm not sure if this is part of an app I have installed or where this came from but I have searched for what it goes to. The listing in the notification screen is @SearchMapsCMRes.dll,-10442
Anyone have a suggestion or know what this is? I have other notifications that are for my map apps so I'm not sure what this is.

I have the same thing, let me know if you find out anything, it might have to do with having an insider preview and they are testing something, but that is just a guess I have no proof.

This may take longer to explain than I prefer to. Please bear with me.

I always use Google search provider since " day one ".
Lately I had this situation where the search provider was switched Without my doing. I think it was Bing. But there were Yahoo, and I think Ask. Each time I would switch it back to Google.
Until one day I got " pissed off " and I went to Manage Add-ons and remove all Search providers under the list except Google. See screenshot :

However, since then, I am facing this popup when I go to internet....

Then, when I click to see what's the deal, I see this .....

I can't find out which search engine is trying to get in, and I am stuck with this popup. It does not interfer me from normal computer chores, just annoying.
Hoping I can get rid of this.

Hi,

I read a thread where someone had a similar problem, and I viewed the hijackthis log on my own (of course not touching a thing), but could not find any similarities.

The problem that I have is that a little magnifiying glass on the taskbar keeps telling me, "*search settings notification* a program was blocked from changing your default search settings..." When I click on it to fix it, two boxes are available, one is "Protect my browser default search settings..." and the other is "Enable browser network error assistant page."

Ran AVG, downloaded and ran Spyware Terminator, download and ran Eusing Registry cleaner. Know it's spyware or malware, but not sure how to tackle it.

Wasn't sure if I was supposed to wait to paste and attach now, or wait until it is requested, so just attaching it now so as not to waste your time for me having to ask for it.

Any help much appreciated.

Answer:Notification settings problem!

Hi Freddie,

I have personally never encountered that before; however, I'm not an app person so I don't often look in that area. Anyway, since no one has responded yet, I'm guessing this may not be an easy fix. However, based on a lack of knowledgeable responses, here's what I would try:

Create a new user account and see if that works:
User Account - Add a New User in Windows 8

Run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt. If errors reported, see tutorial below to continue:
DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption in Windows 8

Refresh you Win 8 installation (read carefully before proceeding):
Refresh Windows 8

Good luck.

Hi guys!

I have completely uninstalled GIMP via Perfect Uninstaller. However, when I right-click any image file (jpeg, gif), the context menu still has "Open with GIMP" line which I find really annoying. I tried various context menu editors, but I could not seem to get rid of it. I am a bit leery of tampering with the registry because I dunno where to look, to be honest.

Any help would be much appreciated. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit.

(It really annoys me when programs add items to your context menu without your permission.)

Hello cholito,
You could try CCleaner, it's as safe as they come.

CCleaner - Download

Backup your registry when prompted.
It may just be a redundant entry in the registry.
Give it a try, and post your results. Good luck.

This started today and so far I have only detected it with my IRC client. I have normally all the pop-up notification settings turned off for this software. However, ever since today Windows 10 has been turning the notifications back on and it doesn't seem to save my preferences when I go turn the settings off. This is super frustrating and I don't want to reinstall the IRC client because I would lose way too many settings etc and fixing it back to suit my preferences would be too time-consuming and therefore the very last option.

I installed an APC battery backup yesterday along with the required software. Now every time I boot up, the message about "do I want this program to make changes to your computer" comes up. I have the software installed in my startup folder so don't know why I have to see this at each boot up. Any way to disarm this message? I know the notification area on user accounts control settings probably would do it but not sure if I should change that setting. Thanks.

Answer:User account notification settings

Hello Patriceltic, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yeah, I have the same issue with APC PowerChute doing this.

You could use the tutorial below to create a elevated task shortcut to run the C:\Program Files (x86)\APC\APC PowerChute Personal Edition\Display.exe file without a UAV prompt.Elevated Program Shortcut without UAC Prompt - Create
Afterwards, you can use this elevated task shortcut with step 15 in the tutorial below to setup a separate task to run at startup?Task - Create to Run a Program at Startup and Log On
When finished, delete APC UPS Status from the Startup folder in the Start Menu. This will only not give a UAC prompt for administrator accounts though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

After power cycling my receiver, I only have the option to select stereo under speaker setup. When Irestart my PC or log off/log on, it shows the option to select 7.1 surround sound. I am looking at this by right clicking the volume systray icon and selecting playback devices, right clicking my playback device and selecting configure speakers.

My set-up: I have 2 monitors and a TV / AVR receiver combo plugged into a XFX 7870. My receiver is connected with HDMI to my PC and has 7.1 surround out.

I have tried blocking pin 19 on the PC end of my HDMI cable with electric tape but that has not fixed my issue. This happens every time I turn off my TV and receiver and then turn them back on. I shut off my reciever and TV at night but not my PC so this is a bit annoying.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Answer:Missing option to enable 7.1 surround sound. Only shows Stereo

Does it correct if you switch to the 2nd device in list and back to HDMI? It wouldn't be a solution though even if that worked.

windows 10 behaves strangely, I click for example on MS edge, it launches, if you hover over it on the taskbar it shows with the small window but there is no way it actually launches on the screen! all the applications behave similarly, after fiddling a bit, I could only launch windows explorer by right clicking on the taskbar and chosing win explorer the only application that launched and I could actually see and work with.

I have my taskbar configured to always show a few programs, like controlMK, speedfan, steam, and MSN..

However, sometimes it forgets these settings, and a few of the programs (control MK and speedfan) vanish from there and are hidden.

In the case of speedfan, it simply hides it and I have to chance it back to "always show", but with controlMK, it simply vanishes, and I can't use it unless I kill the process in the task manager.

Any ideas? :\

Lately, I have been getting e-mail notifications from Facebook from friends of my friends (who I don't know) comment on something. And that's what I don't want. I have been sending those posts to my Spam Folder.

To illustrate:

1.) Suppose I know John Doe and Mary Snow-I only want to get notifications when they comment on a post in an email notification.

2.) John Doe or Mary Snow know Bill Jones. I don't know Bill Jones, how do I stop the email notices that say, "Bill Jones (friends with Mary Snow or Friends with John Doe) commented or posted to Mary Snow or John Doe's wall.

I went to set up email notification to only get email about situation #1 and not be notified about situation #2. Is this possible?

Jack

I have 2 issues with the notification area and trying to get settings to stay after restarting the computer. My office is deploying its first year of Windows 7 Pro systems and we make an excessive use of the Group Policy feature "Run only allowed Windows Applications."

My first issue with the notification area comes to quick access to the management utility. If I click the arrow to view all of the hidden icons and click the Customize option, I get the message that the "Administrator has prohibited the use..." of that feature. I can go to the control panel and access the notification area through there though. I have also elevated my user rights to administrative for unrestricted access to get to the menu from either the Customize option or control panel.

Now no matter which method I use to get to the notification area options, I can make the necessary changes and updated, I see the icons that I want to see and hide the ones that I don't want to see. After I restart the computer and sign back in, all of the notification area icons are right back to how they were before I made my customizations, and I can't figure out how to prevent this from happening. Any ideas?

Answer:Notification Area Settings not staying after reboot

I guess you might not have edit permissions for Registry thread
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
where all those settings are stored.

If you're not going to use 'Tablet Mode', (especially on a Desktop PC), or any other features from the bottom of the Notifications Panel, you can hide them by navigating in the Windows Registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell and in the right pane double click 'UseActionCenterExperience' and change the value to 0; close the Registry Editor and restart Explorer.
(All settings can still be accessed in 'Settings')

I set my notification / pop up settings for Synology Cloud Drive to the OFF position both under the windows notification settings and in the app itself. Every time I restart the computer it resets itself to the ON position.

Is this a Win10 issue or an issue with the software?

Answer:Notification / Pop Up settings return to default after restart

Welcome aboard.

Check it in Startup. If it is there, disable it.

Hi, my boot up time has become very long at the Microsoft loading bar animation, about 2min. I had 3 bluescreens yesterday. I have noticed a search settings notification after windows boot up, and after closing firefox that says:

"a program was blocked from changing your default search settings".

Also, yahoo appears to hijack my google search at times, and appears as default search drop down on the search toolbar next to my address bar, instead of google as it used to be, even though I had removed the yahoo engine from that drop down on a previous session.
Thanks in advance.

I have a micro-usb cable for charging my mouse that the cats chewed through. It was doing the device connect/disconnect sound over and over with an annoying popup. Oddly enough, the cable still works but now it shows as an "Unknown Device" in the Device Manager under "Other devices".
The way I did my cable management in the back of my desktop is I ran everything through a tube, so even though I have a replacement for that micro-usb, in order to remove it and replace it with the working one I'd have to spend so much time and effort. What's funny is the reason I did all of this cable management was because of the cats, I had all of my usb cords going through a separate piece of cardboard to where they plug in but they still managed to find an exposed area to chew.
So my ghetto solution was I replaced the connect/disconnect .wav with a .wav with no audio. The pop up is what is still giving me trouble though, every time it pops up it forgets that I set it to "Hide icon and notifications"

"USB Device not recognized: The last usb device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it" - How do I get this message to permanently shut up.

My printer has also been giving me a similar pop up but it's only once I boot since it's not turned on then.
There has to be a better solution to either permanently tell Windows Explorer Notifications to go to hell or simply resolve this error without having to stress re... Read more

Answer:Windows Explorer Notification is not remembering settings

If it is no longer plugged into a USB port and you are still getting that notification, you may be able to get rid of it by going into device manager and deleting the hidden profile. So, to view profiles that are not active, you must select View then select Hidden profiles. Once done, you will see many devices displayed that are greyed-out which indicates they are not active. Find the one you think may be causing the issue and delete it. No guarantees but this was the first thing that came to my mind. Good luck.

Hello, I am pretty computer literate, but I still have a long way to go. I am trying to figure out what the best type of machine would be for my application.

I want to setup two machines, one in my bathroom, and one setup in the kitchen. I would like them to do the same things on both. I would like to be able to browse the net, listen to network music on my home server and possibly be able to watch tv on them (but this i might accomplish by getting an LCD TV instead of trying to figure out a way to stream live tv).

My space is very limited in the kitchen that is why i am thinking about a thin client, the bathroom has a little more room. I have an old IBM NetVista case that i have an 800mhz VIA processor in with a gig or ram that i could either use as a new server for net booting the thin clients or as the bathroom computer.

But what do you guys think that my options will be. If i go the route of LCD TV's for the tv viewing then it will be hardwired ethernet since i would have to run new coax and ethernet cable to each location, but if i decide to do streaming some how then it will all be done wifi.

Thanks for any advice you guys can give me.

Answer:Best option for me (possible thin client application?)

Most likely, TV over any sort of a thinclient operation will not be possible for less than the cost of an LCD and wiring.

What OS would the TV "server" be? Do you have any TV hardware yet? Cable box/PCI Tuner card/SlingBox/etc?

Hi, Action Centre has occasionally displayed one or several
"An App Default was Reset /An app caused a problem with the default app"
notifications.

Clicking such a notification simply opens Settings.

This I find particularly unhelpful.

Have you seen this, and is there any way of finding out what actually happened? Thanks.

Answer:An App Default was Reset notification opens Settings - no information

Have you installed anything just prior to the time you got the notification? The only time I have seen this is when I install a software that will change the Windows default app. An example is if I install Adobe Reader on a PC when I'm done I get that message. And clicking on the notification does go to Settings. It doesn't say "which" app was reset, but that is the only answer I can see is fitting. If this is not the case then it's tough to say what caused the notification.

When I click on the start button, nothing happens.
It highlights when I hover over it, but doesn't react to being clicked.
The same is true for the notification area.

I can right click on the start button and it provides the normal options.
Again the same is true of the notification button.

I have the settings app pinned to the taskbar, but the icon is not visible.
I know that it is still recognised as being there, as it highlights when I hover over it, and it holds its place like any visible icon would.
Right clicking it does nothing.

At first, the start menu was the only thing not responding. The notification panel was working, as I remember changing to 'tablet mode' to try to resolve it.

I restarted the computer, but that was when I discovered that notification panel was no longer working. I don't know the state of the settings icon before I restarted.

I have also restarted into safe mode, but the problem still occurs.
I have not downloaded any new software since it started occurring.

I have checked the task manager and there appears to be no change in performance.

Any assistance would be appreciated, as this is getting really frustrating!
Thank you in advance
Lucas

Try this.................

Right click at it > click Command Prompt (Admin) > type powershell > press Enter key.
At the flashing prompt, copy and paste this command line ( to avoid typo it's best to apply Copy/paste method)......

Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

Opening Project Spartan on the start bar at the bottom says " Explorer invalid value for registry "
This same issue happens trying to open PC Settings in any possible way!

I have been told to unlink my account from Microsoft but there is no way to do this.

Please help this is driving me mad. I can't update Windows 10 either as I can't open the update page.

Reinstalling Windows 10 Tech didn't work either (This is latest build with Project Spartan)

After I start my computer, I keep getting a message that says, "Change Windows Update Settings: Windows Update Setting is turned off." I click on it to set updates to automatic, which appears to already be selected, but click it anyway. Then the next time I turn the machine on, I get the same message. I am running Windows 7.

Maybe the "Windows Update" Service is disabled. Go into the Services Console, set it to "Automatic", then click "Start".Start > RunType services.msc and press <Enter>Scroll down to Windows Update and double-click it.Make any necessary changes then click "OK"

I solved this myself using Hijackthis. Thank you, forum, for directing people to this program!

---

I'm currently having a problem where a message pops up whenever I log in on my computer that says, "A program was blocked from changing your default search settings." It is very persistent and annoying.

I'm not sure if this is related to the same issue, however, I have noticed that whenever I start Firefox, there are many Yahoo toolbars cluttered on the screen that I am sure I didn't install. I then proceeded to remove Firefox and install it on my computer again choosing the option to not install any previous bookmarks or toolbars, however, the Yahoo toolbars appear again as they were.

How do I solve this problem? I am not an expert with computers and have not been able to resolve this for months.

I have tried to configure some notification icons to display and others to be hidden. Win7 respects my settings during the session but after a reboot they are back to whatever they were before. Its a real productivity killer for me. I am running inside a standard account. I thought about trying to change the settings in the Admin account but the icons I need to customise don't appear there. Any thoughts?

The icons I choose to "show" in the tray become hidden at the next bootup or restart on Dell XPS-13 Windows 10 Creators Update.
Tray icon settings do not "take". Wiped out next time.
The problems with this awful update to Windows 10 are never-ending.
Please help.

Answer:Notification Area icons settings are not saved Windows 10

Create a System Restore Point first.
Then open Registry Editor and navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotify
Now in the right pane, delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream Registry values.
Restart your computer and now try to set your preferences via Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Notification Area > Select which icons appear on the taskbar.
If things don't work out to your expectations, you may go back to the created restore point.
Hope it helps.

I installed the 14342.1004 build in my Icon. I went to adjust the notification center settings. I noticed that as you turned one on, another would turn off. Then I turned them all off, and now I can't get more than two items on before the system shuts off another one. What did I do wrong? Is there another place I need to go and change another setting? From what I can tell, I should have the ability to have a total of 12 items in the notification center. Now I can have 2. Is this a bug I just found?
