Picture file trying to over-ride my existing picture files

Question: Picture file trying to over-ride my existing picture files

As a keen flickr member I have a lot of photographs on my computer. These are all neatly allocated to different files, depending upon a variety of variables. So far....all is well.

Yesterday my neighbour kindly upgraded me to Windows 10. Everything seemed fine.

Today I tried to take 4 photographs off my camera and load them up to my computer. Initially I got a dialogue box asking me what I would like to do in future when I plugged in my camera - I said "upload the pix to my computer".

Previously they have always arrived on my desktop in a separate file. I would then edit them, afterwards splitting them up into different files, depending on what I want to do with them.

Anyway, this morning, after taken 4 photographs, I plugged in my camera. I then get a message saying "We found 880 photos. Would you like to import them into your picture folder". And the only alternatives given were IMPORT or CANCEL.

Aggggggggh! I do NOT want all my pix jumbled together in a picture folder. I want them all neatly organised into the folders I have set up.

Is there any way I can get rid of this 'Picture folder' and go back to using my existing folders (they are all still there, and all still containing the photographs they should rightfully contain.)

I would be hugely grateful for some help.

Preferred Solution: Picture file trying to over-ride my existing picture files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Picture file trying to over-ride my existing picture files

What happens if you click Import? Does it give you the option to move them into a specific folder or does it just appear in the Pictures folder? Usually, you can just double-click the camera in This PC so that you can see its contents and you can copy over photographs that you want into the locations that you want them in.

It turns out that if I download a picture file to the photo app in 8.1, without putting it in a particular pre-existing folder, the file goes into the general area of the app displayed alongside several other non-related pictures. Okay, no problem. But for the life of me, I can't figure out how to then move a single image file into one of the pre-existing folders I had created at an earlier time. If your suggestion is to open both the folder and the picture file side by side on the screen and then click and drag, I have no idea how to do that. Is there no way to right-click the image and find a way to select "move to", or something along those lines; or is there a pull-down menu that I can't find with the app open that contains a command to "move to"?
Any suggestions?
Thanks so much,
Neil

Answer:How to move a picture file on 8.1 to a picture folder...

Well, you have many options. What you are looking for is this:

Context Menu - Add Copy To Folder and Move To Folder - Windows 7 Help Forums

But you can just copy the pics and paste them into the folder you like.

The side by side is easy too. Just open the source folder and press WIN + Right arrow. Then open the target folder and press WIN + left arrow, Now you can drag and drop from one folder to the other.

i have 4 folders that each contain pictures of one of my classes. In one of the folders I cannot see the file names, though I can still see the pictures. in all 4 folders I have chosen the extra large icon option, so I can see the contents of the picture without having to open it. I have not (knowingly) done anything different to this folder. What can I do so that I can read the file names again?

I have vista home on a toshiba satellite with dual core - HD is only 20% full

Answer:Help! I can't see file names on picture files

Hi,
Open the folder which is exhibiting this behavior
From the Views dropdown list, select Details
Press and hold the SHIFT key, and select large icons (Thumbnails for xp) from the Views dropdown list
Close and re-open the folder.

I have found this BUG in Micrososft Word 2007, that I consider to be a SERIOUS ISSUE for Microsoft Office Suite.

If you copy an image from a website and paste in the Word file, the image pastes successfully the first time,
but as you go on & paste other images from the site,
the first image is repeated over and over again, in place of other images (which have the same dimensions).
All other text data remain same, the image titles remain same, but only the image is repeated over and over

PLZ SOMEONE...
HOW TO FIX THIS PROBLEM?

MY MICROSOFT WORD 2007 Spec:
Microsoft? Office Word 2007 (12.0.4518.1014) MSO (12.0.6514.5000)
Part of Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007

Answer:Microsoft Office Word 2007 picture paste Bug *same picture is repeated

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
I would not advise pasting images in doc files like that,
I would use ms Paint to paste or save picture as
I would really recommend using the windows snipping tool to get the images that way no bugs are being transferred to the machine or programs,
Then use the Insert image option in word...
It's just a safer way to do an operation,
Cheers.

Hi all,

Super bizarre.

So I woke up this mornind to login into my PC and see that my profile pic is changed back to the previous one. I have not any changes myself.

skype is linked to microsoft account. (skype had my old picture)

other option is that someone logged into my outlook and chaged profile picture then it got synced...

I cannot find any information on why or how picture would revert. ( even more so on a specific date )

any ideas or leads ?

Answer:login profile picture revert back to previous picture

Hello newbiew, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since you Microsoft account is synced by default, then it most likely automatically changed back after syncing.

If you wanted to have the same user account picture for all devices, then changing it for everything should help.

If you only wanted to change it on this PC, then you could turn off syncing for Appearance under "Personalization settings" using the tutorial below.

YouTube? Picture in Picture (Beta)

Users of this extension have also used
Watch YouTube? videos in the corner while browsing the site, just like in the mobile apps.
* Videos will continue to play in a picture-in-picture window when you navigate away from the page
* Re-open video page at any time without interruption
* Start videos in a picture-in-picture window with the right click menu

This extension is a proof-of-concept and is still in beta, with a few known bugs. Playlists don't work correctly, and sometimes videos don't load right. If something goes wrong, opening a new video usually fixes things. If not, try opening a new tab.

I'm doing some data recovery and have come across lots of duplicate pictures, also a lot of them are obviously broken. It started out as 250,000 pictures from practically the entire life of the hard drive,I've narrowed it down to 10,000 in 9GB of which there are still many broken pictures and duplicates making it almost impossible to browse on a normal hard drive so I can't give back to the user in this state,I'm currently browsing them on a fast SSD.

I'd like to remove all the duplicates by reading the actual picture information and not the files name which most do,I've tried a couple so far and none have found a single duplicate.

I've tried Duplifinder

Unwanted encoding messages on opening MSWord files. Inability to open MSExcel files and picture files. This is something of an esoteric request. I recently bought a Dell 2405FPW, and hoped to use the PiP functionality to watch movies or DVDs from my desktop whilst playing World of Warcraft.

Unfortunately, Dell doesn't allow you to use Pip for this function, so I thought of replicating the effect with software. I've tried a number of virtual desktop management programs from Download.com, but none seems to allow a virtual desktop WITHIN the desktop itself.

If anyone knows of software that can perform this function, I would be grateful.

I want to still use the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer for viewing pictures but when you click the "close and open picture for editing" button I wish to use a different editor than Paint. Does anyone know how to change this permanently? I'm using XP sp2. Thanx.

Background: I like using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer because it displays the picture instantly which usually is all I want. My other pic editors take way too long to come up to be used as the default for jpg extensions when all you want is to view them. But I would like to edit the pics with a different editor than Paint so it would be convenient to change the "close and open picture for editing" button of Windows Picture and Fax Viewer rather than having to close this program and launch my pic editor and then browse to the same picture. I already read the Help and all it says is it uses the default picture editor but doesn't say how to change it. Note that I still want the .jpg extension associated with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer so changing that is not an option.

Hello,

I have tried to find an answer to this but cannot. Lately, I noticed my User Account Picture was not the picture I had selected. In addition, the Background Picture for my Windows 7 Home Premium edition log on screen was changed. This happened after running a program that is for exams at school which reboots your computer into a safe mode where the only program available is a rudimentary word processor.

I contacted the company that makes that software, Examsoft, and they told me how to get my default logon picture for my Windows Logon background back.

To address the User Account picture, I went into Control Panel > User Accounts and attempted to "change picture". This is not an option, however, for my administrator user account. It is an option for my guest account. I tried cloning my account without the bad .dat files, but that didn't work either as the new account I had created, also an administrator account, did not display a "change picture" option in control panel either.

I ran sfc /scannow, and it found no errors.

I am not sure what to do. Has anyone encountered this? Can you please help me?

Attached is a screen shot:

Thank You.

Question: Picture files

I am archiving my photo files to CDRs. I am wondering what is the best file format to save them as. Is JPEG better than TIFF and if so why.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

TL

Answer:Picture files

What are the pictures for? If you plan to print them at photo quality TIFFis your best choice. If they are to be viewed on screen used on a website or e-mailed JPG will allow you to get many on a single CD. Every time you save them to JPG you lose quality.

Most of my images are 30Mb TIFF. I tried LZW compression which is lossless, but it took them too long to compress and decompress if I wanted to look at a batch of them. I just limit myself to 22 per CD and use the full TIFF. CDs are cheap and my images are important to me especially the ones I have spent hour working in Photoshop. It takes a while to scan a roll of film in my film scanner and it is certainly worth 25c to not have to do it again.

Hello:
I have been working on converting files to an MP4 format that will work with my IPod Touch. I have found two conversion methods with slightly different outputs. Based on the following info can anyone advise which would provide the better picture and why:

Output #1: 367MB MP4, 159kbs bitrate, total bitrate 854kbs, 480 X 320, H.264 codec.

Output #2: 581MB MP4, 160kbs bitrate, total bitrate 1352kbs 428 X 320, H.264 codec.

Both methods result in usable files but I do not understand bitrate, total bitrate and why one resolution is 480 and the other 428.

Thanks for any information.

Answer:Which MP4 file provides the better picture and why?

I think 428 may benefit for wide screen. 480 seems the standard for normal 4:3 ratio.

moving pictures--they had the same file name--i hit the copy and replace request--but should have used rename--i need to know where the replaced pictures went to?

Answer:When I copy/replace a file (picture) where does the replaced file go?

In general, once you replace a file with another file with the same file name, the older file is effectively deleted (hence the term "replace"). However, depending on the nature of how the device "deleted" the older file, the physical memory address occupied by the original file may still contain the original file... where the newer file was stored on a different set of memory addresses*. Depending again on the type of device you're using, you could try to recover the original file by using a file recovery software.
You may need to create a Windows Central account in order to respond to this thread... and provide us with more details (such as what device you were referring to).

After having some computer problems I had re-installed Windows and had to regain control over the My Documents folder I kept on a seperate drive. I booted into Safe Mode, logged in as admin and did this. So far so good.More computer problems followed (still haven't got to the bottom of it), a motherboard change and re-installed Windows again. This time I have been able to access the My Documents folder with no problem.now, here's the thing.I have all my digital photos stored in one folder seperated out into sub-folders.In some of the folders the file name is green rather than the normal black. As far as I know this is caused by encryption. I have attempted to remove the encryption, but keep getting access is denied. I have checked the file permissions in Safe Mode and all of the files seem to have Full Permission. The photos cannot be displayed at all. They don't even show if I switch to thumbnail view.Any help appreciated!

I have several folders containing my pictures. There are only a few pictures per folder, I would like to consolodate them into a single folder. How can I do this ?

Answer:Consolodating picture files

If it were me, I would do a search for all of a file type in the folders, *.jpg, for example, and then select them all in the search list and Cut them to be pasted into the destination folder.

There is always All To One and similar programs, too.

I have A file folder that I've scanned hundreds of pre-1900 family photos into. Somehow four of the pictures have been corrupted. When I set the view to thumbnail in Widow XP I get the thumbnail picture view on all pictures exept these four. On the four I only get the JPEG or TIFF icon. They still maintain their file size, but they cannot be opened or previewed. I can't delete them either by right clicking or dragging to the trash. I wanted to burn the Picture file to disc and the only way I could do it was to "select all" and then unselect the four. I've moved the good pictures to a new folder, but now I am left with a folder with four undeletable pictures in an undeletable file folder. I can't delete the pictures or the folder. Does anyone have any ideas ?

I am running Windows XP on a Compaq Presario with a CD Writer. There are a lot of art files I don't use constantly but don't want to delete them because I will probably use them in the future. They are mostly zip files. I want to burn them onto a cd to store them but need to know how to go about it. First, do I need to extract the folders from the zip file? And where do I open them to burn? Or will the cd writer only burn music and video files? I have an older computer with Windows ME on it that I haven't used in years. Should I just email myself the files and open them on the older machine? It has Nero on it and I used it to copy anything when I used the old computer. I would hate to have to delete the files, but I have almost 70MB in just one folder and with several folders I really need to free up the space.

Answer:want to save picture files

Just try a program such as CDburnerXP. Install it then select Make a Data Disc. Add your zipped files and burn. http://www.cdburnerxp.se/help/Data/compiledata I would choose the option to finalize disc. Leaving a disc open to add more files sounds good but makes the disc hard to read on some systems. Splurge and finalize the disc! Before deleting the originals test the newly burnt disc in both computers. Insert disc open My Computer and your CD drive letter and drag one of your zips onto the desktop and unzip it. If it works ok you can delete the originals.

If the pictures are valuable burn two copies to be safe before deleting. There are other programs you could try if you don't like CDburnerXP let us know how you make out with it.

Is it possible for the "modified date" of a file to be inaccurate? Scenario, a picture file is stored on a usb flash drive. Can it be modified just by plugging the flash drive into a computer? Thanks in advance for the help!

Answer:Modified picture files

It would help if you could describe your situation in more detail. Plugging in a flash drive will not change the modification date of any files it contains. But there are a number of utilities that can change the date so it cannot be fully relied on.

Question: Lost Picture Files

About a year ago I decided to protect my computer and downloaded many antispy, firewall, etc. programs. The programs slowed my computer to a crawl and I unwisely decided to do a full sytem restore back to factory settings to start from scratch. I saved all of my files to disc or so i thought. I ended up losing many family pictures that I put on my computer from my digital camera.

To make a long story short: is theri anyway possible that I could find these pictures even though my computer was fully restored back to factory settings. this was over a year ago, so i am not even sure of the names of files. I just know they were on my main C: drive. I figured it was worth a try.

Answer:Lost Picture Files

When i open a folder containg pictures (JPPGs, TIFFs etc) it takes age sto display the contents. This i am pressuming is because it is showing previews/thumbnails of each file which would be great if they were small but most of my pictures are a minimum of 2 or 3 MB so this takes a while when there are hundreds of them. So i though switching off the display thumbnails would help but it still takes ages to display the standard icons! anybody know why? and can i get it to just list the files in the folder without doing other stuff? even if i go to recent documents when i have openend say 20 pics recently it still takes about 30 secs to populate the list! Any suggestions, i know Windows 98 never did this!

Also when i search for pictures uing the XP search tool, sometimes i get about 300 results and it takes forever to mak eit scroll as it does what ever it does.

This dosent happen with any other type of file, well it does but only large ones, whats going on?

Hi, Everyone!

I am not very good with comps so it is kind of hard for me to understand all the advices previously posted. I had pictures in compressed (zip - folder). I tried to open it in Paint and then it all went weird on me. All my picture files in that huge folder turned into paint files! I can't open then neither in paint, nor in photogallery or any other program...
Help me out, please! Those were my memory pictures...

Thanks ahead for all the kind gentlemen and ladies who would be able to help me out!

Janet

Answer:Can't open picture files

You can't open zip files in paint, any more than you could open "My Documents" or "My Pictures" in Paint. You need to extract the files with 7zip or winzip or a similar program, whereupon you probably ought be able to open the pictures.

I just upgraded from ME to XP and formatted my harddrive as part of the install. In prep for this, I copied all of my docs and pics onto a CD-R and then moved them into the appropriate folders after the install. My docs work fine, but all of my picture files are corrupt - sort of. They display as thumbnails just fine, but when opened, only the top 25-50% of the pic is normal and the bottom half is garbled.
Also, when I try to open the MY Pictures folder, I get the following error:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Lastly, I have tried opening my pictures from the CD-R, but they still open corrupted. Any ideas on how I can salvage these files?

My file has changed to 05 [1] from JPEG, and I can not get them to be a picture when I right click to save as. How do I get JPEG back?
flosun

Answer:changing picture files

To change, for example, <image.05> to a jpeg, where the original file was an image, just rename the file <image.jpg>

On the broader question, make sure that when you "Save As" the "Save as File type" (the box below "Save As") is showing .jpg

Another thing, what program are you using to save the files?

I've recently upgraded to Windows 2000 professional from ME which had become rather slow. My PC supplier sent an OEM version of the OS which seems rather old. It appears to have 'upgraded' my IE6 to the old version 5. I have reloaded IE6 but now find that if I want to save an image or photograph from a website I can only do so as a bitmap. There are no options to save as .jpeg or .gif. I've mentioned this to colleagues at work and while they have experienced the same problem the only advice they can give is that it will 'probably go away' - unfortunately my problem has already lasted over four weeks and shows no sign of going away. I suspect that there may be some setting that has changed, either in IE or some other area of the Windows 2000 OS. Has anyone else experienced this problem, and if so did you find a solution. Any advice on this issue would be greatly appreciated.Malcolm Craik

I have noticed recently that all video files on my computer will only play sound and no video. This also happens with DVDs. It doesn't seem to matter what program I use, they all have the same problem except for Quicktime.
Power DVD, Windows Media Player, and Divx player all will not show any video at all. I have tried original DVDs and my home movie DVDs, and it doesn't seem to be a protection problem. I have also tried Divx, avi mpg files.
Any ideas about what would affect everything like this?

I have a Digital camera and have sent some pictures to other internet users using Outlook Express and attaching the photos to the Emails. When the receiver gets the emails and opens the attachments it goes into what sounds like a screenshow. Unfortunately not only does it contain the photos that I intended for the recipient to get but also other photos that reside on my pc. How can I stop this from happening??????

Oh my goodness!!!!

Answer:Unwanted Picture Files

It sounds like you are attaching the whole folder, not just the photo you want.
My suggestion would be to create a "for email " folder in your my pictures folder and copy just the photo you are planning on emailing there.

It is also possible you have some share to web style software included with this camera?
Are you copying the pictures from the camera to a folder (I normally create a new dated folder each time I transfer pictures such as if I took photos at the arboretum today I would put them in a folder arboretum042406 so that I knew when they were created, and that folder would be in a sub folder RawDigicamPics inside the MyPictures folder in MyDocuments. )
Then when I want to email some , I copy them to the ForEmail folder in MyPictures folder.

Just right click in My Pictures and choose new / folder and name it.

The opening as a slideshow is one way XP will display pictures when you have a lot of them.

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. I have an external hard drive which I have many picture files saved on. Today, while going through the pictures trying to organize them, I came upon a folder in which I was unable to open many of the pictures. I can see the picture in the thumbnail/icon view; however, when I try to actually open the picture, it just brings up a gray box with only a very little bit of the top edge of the picture (if it's portrait format) or side edge of the picture (if it's landscape format). I tried saving one of the pictures to my computer's hard drive to see if it would then open, but I got the same result. Like I said, some of the pictures in this particular folder I can open, but the rest react this way, when I try. Any ideas of what the problem could be?

Thanks!

Answer:Windows 7 & picture files

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
Thumbs.db is a hidden, protected operating system file, created by Windows 7,  containing thumbnail images of the pictures in a folder.  It isn't user-accessible, and there's no way to open it.
There might 3rd party software which might be able to help open these file, however we will not be able help you with that as per the data protection policy .
Thanks

My computer keeps deleting my picture files!

I have files on the hard drive of family etc... but suddenly some of the directories are now empty... several folders that I know had 20+ pictures each are now completely empty.

Could this be caused by my running the disk clean-up utility? I dont look at the photos all the time, so they are 'inactive' files but why would the computer delete pictures files!?

I've just noticed that some of my picture files (jpgs) in Windows Explorer dont show a thumbnail anymore, just the Microsoft thumbnail image. In Filmstrip mode, it says 'No preview available.', When I double click on the thumbnail, Office Picture Manager opens, but there is just a small red cross where the image should be. They wont open in any other software either (Paint, Picture & Fax Viewer or Picassa). All the pictures that have been affected this way say they were modified on the same date and time in October 2008. Also a Thumbs database file has appeared in some of the affected folders. What has happened, and can it be reversed?

Answer:Picture Files Won't Open

Sounds like these pictures all got corrupted by the event that happened in October 2008. Perhaps a sudden power supply interruption or something like that (or more ominously, perhaps a virus infection or something like that) seems to have either damaged part of the disk where these images were leading to the pictures getting damaged or the data in the pictures was corrupted.

Question: lost picture files

While moving pictures to a cd I seem to have lost some files. I was using the move function and while one file was burning i moved other files in preparation, However although they have moved from my c drive they did not burn to the cd. i looked in the temp files and i have used filerestore to try and see if they were somehow deleted but to no avail.Any Ideas??????Kevin

Answer:lost picture files

It may help in future, when you move files to another folder or drive, to use the copy option to copy them first and after checking them to see if they have all copied ok, then delete the original files. I have lost many files by using the move option. I never use it now.I know this will not help you right now but remember this in the future. Audeal

My picture files used to show the pictures. Somewhere down the line they changed to flower icons. How do I get my pictures back?

Answer:Solved: Picture Files

There are various places that something might have changed to bring that about. The simplest to check is as follows:

Go to your pictures folder.
Press Alt
Go to tools
Click Folder Options
Click View.
Make sure that "always show icons, never thumbnails" is unchecked.
Click OK

although .bmp's are large they retain best quality. The next best i use for quality and file size for uploading is .jpeg/.jp
