Metro apps to desktop / custom toolbar (also standard apps)

Question: Metro apps to desktop / custom toolbar (also standard apps)

Hi there

If you want to pin Metro apps / standard apps to desktop / create a custom toolbar with these as CASACADABLE items it's fairly simple.

I made a post way back in W8.1 about this --method still works - no reg hacks, XAML knowledge etc needed.

http://www.eightforums.com/general-s...tml#post390324

If you want your OWN icons use this little FREE program (ICOFX) to create the .ico files.

http://filehippo.com/download_icofx/6890/
While the ALL apps idea in the previous thread is a good idea I like the idea of customising it een more -- I find the custom toolbar best for me with a few pgms pinned to desktop and quick launch taskbar.

Preferred Solution: Metro apps to desktop / custom toolbar (also standard apps)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm really confused and I'm trying to work out why I would want to use tablet mode, apart from the minimize, maximize and "x" buttons found in desktop mode. Aren't the modern apps that you can launch straight from the start menu in desktop mode, exactly the same as the ones in tablet mode?
I hope to hear back soon

Answer:Are Modern Apps/Metro Apps exactly the same in Tablet Mode as Desktop Mode?

yes .. but in tablet mode they open in full screen

Hi there

Running Metro apps on desktop / creating short cuts etc is hardly new as you can do it already in Windows 8.1

Metro apps - desktop / taskbar / create cascading menu

However I hope that these will now run in proper re-sizeable windows,

The method I've linked still runs the metro apps as they do normally in W8.1 - it saves you though having to switch environments to run these and you can create desktop icons and links too.

I am a Windows 8.1 desktop/mouse user. The metro apps (may not be using right term for that) seem useful to me, but I do not like them taking up my full monitor screen to display. For example, I would like to be able to have the Calendar app display in a reduced size window on my desktop, or the Map app. I looked around for a solution, but did not find one. Presumably this is not possible? Alternatives?

Answer:Metro Apps on Desktop?

Hello Retexan,

If you like, you could use the snap views feature in Windows 8.1 to see multiple apps on the same screen.

OK, i'd like to make it clear that i'm using the so-called "real" Administrator account that is hidden but can be activated, not a regular account with admin privelidges. At first i was trying to figure out if Metro apps can be used by this account, and it appeared that they cant, but managed to find a trick to enable it. i did it by making sure UAC is on, making sure that FilterAdministratorToken is set to a value of 1 in the Registry, and by enabling "User Account Control: Admin approval mode for the built-in Administrator account" (secpol.msc [Local Security Policy]> Local Policies> Security Options).

So i did a bit more research and toying around, only to discover that although i might have found a workaround for running most Metro apps in general, i discovered that syncing, d/l'ing of apps from the Windows Store, etc is not possible unless you're using a Microsoft account. Please note that any other account with admin privelidges can use the apps without a hitch, as well as any Standard account. So it clearly is not a limitation of just having an admin account, alone.

Also, the built-in Admin is the only kind of account that cant be converted from a local account to a MS Account, all other accounts with admin privelidges can do so. If you look in the Control Panel and try to make changes to the account, you will find that the option isnt available, whereas with other accounts it is. This brings about the issue of not being able to sync or d/l... Read more

Answer:Use Metro Apps As Admin AND Be Able To Sync, d/l Store apps, etc???

Hello Stephen, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Setting that security policy below to be enabled will basically just turn the built-in elevated "Administrator" account into an unelevated administator account that requires UAC approval to open or run anything that requires elevated rights to do so.

This would be why you are able to open the Store afterwards, but you would still need to sign into the Store with any Microsoft account to be able to install any "Metro" Store apps.
Windows Store - Sign in with Different Microsoft Account in Windows 8

You still will not be able to switch the built-in "Administrator" to be a Microsoft account. It can only remain as a local account.

Hope this helps,

Also, is it possible to have the live tiles screen visible all times on my 2nd monitor. I use Stardocks Start8 BTW if that helps

Answer:Closing Metro Apps takes me to desktop

Hello gizbug,

If you are using Windows 8.1 now, then:

You could uncheck the When I sign in or close apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start box from step 4 in OPTION TWO of the tutorial below to go to your Start screen.
Desktop or Start - When Sign in or Close apps in Windows 8
You could open the Start screen from the taskbar on your 2nd monitor to have it show until you either open the desktop there or drag and drop a desktop window there.

Hope this helps.

I tried to run the IE Metro app on my EEE PC, which has a desktop resolution of 1024x600.
It won't run because it says the desktop resolution is too small. I can't increase the resolution any more via the graphics driver options.
However, the rest of Windows 8 works fine on this machine.

Is there a way I can turn this restriction off (registry, computer management?) so that the apps will launch? I don't care if they look a little uglier, but I'd like to use them on this system.

Or is there a way to fool the graphics card and choose a higher resolution that would just meet the minimum desktop requirement to launch Metro apps (1024x768?)?

Ok. I just found an annoyance with Windows 8. Not sure if it's fixed in Windows 8.1 or if there is an application that can fix it.

If I am on the desktop, and browse using "My Computer" (Computer, now, I guess) or Documents or whatever. If I open a file that uses a Metro app, when I close the Metro app, is there a way to go back to the desktop rather than the default of into Metro? If I open one using Metro, I'd expect it to go back to my Metro UI. If I open it using a desktop app, I'd like it return to the desktop.

Not a big thing, but when going through multiple files (mobi, etc., I like the Metro app), getting back to the Metro UI and have to hit the desktop icon to get back to the standard Desktop 'Explorer'.

Answer:Windows 8 Metro apps & return to desktop

You can change it in 8.1 to go to the desktop. I found this pretty annoying to, the problem now is sometimes I want to go back to the start menu. I wish it would just go back to the last screen used, ie desktop or start menu.

Ok, so I setup the Mail application on the Start Screen and it's watching my gmail account for me. That's all fine and dandy.

Now, I want notifications to show when my screen is locked. I figured this out (but I'm a bit concerned that the thought bubble appears at the top and anybody sitting near by terminal can see my new email (at least the first line of it).
So, if I am in the classic desktop (which I will be most of the time), and I happen to be not looking at my screen when an email arrives, I miss the little popup which shows in the upper right. There is nothing else on the taskbar, status area or otherwise to alert me to the fact that an email came in while I was away.

Is there a way to ensure that these Metro apps more forcefully alert me to the fact that something just happened. A 5 second pop-up which goes away is not going to do it.

Answer:Metro apps notifications on classic desktop

You are probably going to need a proper desktop email client for that.

Hi

I have installed Windows 8 RP, and everything works fine, except I cannot access internet from metro apps: IE, Store, New, Mail etc. Does not access internet, even though I have access to internet from Desktop?
I have tried everything, and googled for hours without any useful result.
Does anyone have any suggestion?

Kind regards
Iradj

Answer:Access internet from desktop but not from Metro Apps

From what I've read about this problem running the system file corruption scan in an elevated command prompt > sfc/scannow followed by a reboot which does the repair.

Then run the DISM scan to fix the component store corruption > Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth then reboot and run the sfc/scannow again to make sure everything is fixed.

This should take care of the store going online problem.

I often switch back and forth between desktop and metro apps - for example, looking something up on Chrome in desktop mode while messaging someone on my skype metro app. After around 45 seconds in desktop mode, the metro app is closed when I return! This is very frustrating as you can probably guess. Anyone encountered this problem before? How did you solve it?
Thanks!

When I'm working with Photoshop I always have my email open because of the meeting notes.
The problem I'm having now is that everytime I focus back on Photoshop, the mail app closes/minimizes by itself. The same thing goes with Skype

I know that you can open that tiny multitasking window on the side, but it's just not efficient.
Is there a way to remedy this?

Hi all, hope you're well

Two days ago I purchased a new laptop that comes with Windows 8. It's my first time using it and I have to go against what appears to be the population because I like Metro. I've tinkered around with it over the weekend and found most of my answers - many from this forum.

I've installed all updates for Windows and MS Office, and it includes the Windows 8.1 update and my system is up-to-date. There are two tweaks I'd like to do but I can't find the solution. It could be my lack of understanding the correct naming conventions, so I'll try explain the best I can as Mr Google is exhausted.

When I press the Windows Start key it gives me my best shortcuts/apps in static and live tiles. There's a down arrow to the apps which are smaller and sorted by category.

I also use ClassicShell for two reasons: 1. Anybody using the computer can simply hold the Shift key and access programs like ol' Windows 7, and 2. I've found it a good tool to organise shortcuts as it has a direct influence on this second apps screen. I understand that moving the mousewheel moves the screen left to right.

OK, hopefully you get the picture. So now for my two customisation questions.

1. The first Start screen with the tiles has a very small down arrow in the bottom left corner to switch between the tiles and the apps screen. Is there any other way of switching between the two, or/and, making this tiny little arrow any larger? I'd prefer Metro to switch between screens when I move... Read more

Answer:Modifying arrows and headers in Metro desktop apps

1.

Nope. and nope. However, instead of tiles you can make it go to apps via properties.

2.

Upgrade to 8.1 OR disable desktop background on start screen.

I initially created the thread below but I have since discovered the problem relates to many apps and not just the People app.

People App Opens then Crashes to Desktop

I have a new Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 Core Edition. After only a week I found most of the apps would crash to the Desktop on opening. I thought I had solved the problem by creating a new user account and reinstalling the apps but that only worked for a week before the same problem reappeared.

This is what I have discovered to date:
Initially most apps crashed on openingReinstalling the apps made many of them work but there are still some issues e.g. selecting Maps within Bing weather causes the app to crashThe apps work fine in a new user account or in other local accounts I have not used much to dateNone of the steps recommended in Apps and Tiles Not Working or Responding: Fix in Windows 8 solves the problemI've spent an hour with Microsoft Support who have found no obvious problem and have escalated the problem to the next tier

The problem appears to be due to access rights and priveliges in user accounts since the apps work in other accounts or if I create a new account.

Could someone please explain what may be the cause of the problem. Please advise where the apps are located for each user account and whether there is way of checking that they are set up to have the correct access rights and privileges.

Answer:Metro Apps Crash to Desktop or Don't Operate Correctly

Steve, this is a common problem - I haven't been able to find a solution for it yet. There are many threads on the Internet about it and many suggested solutions, but none work for me. I, too, can't figure out where the problem lies. If you find a solution, please post it. Hope you have better luck!

Hi there

Metro apps CAN be pinned to the desktop or added to a cascading menu via a custom toolbar so it's only a question of finding out what the executable is. You can mix these with standard apps too.

This method works and DOESN'T NEED any 3rd party apps or Registry hacks !!!!!

(Tested on Windows 8.1 -- can't say though on Windows 8 but in theory should work).

From CMD Mode run this command :

explorer shell:Appsfolder

Then from the Window press F10 or choose View ==>choose details and click the 3 boxes Name, Long Display name, AppuserModelID

now choose display DETAILS in the file explorer and you'll see the extra columns including the APPuserModelID
From this point it's now easy -- you simply right mouse click on your desktop and create shortcut =>new

type in the script - for example the Sports application

explorer shell:Appsfolder\Microsoft.BingSports_8wekyb3d8bbwe!AppexSports

This will appear on your desktop -- I need to sort out sensible icons for these but it works !! -- excuse the Printer icon but I'm just testing

The idea is to add these to my custom toolbar - so I can also CASCADE these at will.

Read first my post on creating a custom toolbar with your own standard apps (you can save these in a file so you can re-use if you re-install / get a new system).

Custom Tiles for Desktop apps: How to create.
Seen it in theory, but it needed a proof. And since I didn't see it in the Customization section yet: here goes.

We've all seen it:
One of our desktop programs gets added to the Start Screen. Then we notice that all desktop apps use a small icon in the middle of the medium tile. Looking like 32x32 with big padding/borders:

(this uses classic ICO files on shortcuts)

How do we change the icon or increase its overall size in the square?
(Check the NOTES below for important info.)

The theory:
https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib.../dn393983.aspx

Can be applied in practice:

(this uses PNG files like 'app' shortcuts)

How to get it done:
As the article in the above link describes, in our program's (exe) folder, we need a XML file with the same name as the executable followed by the ".VisualElementsManifest.xml" extension.

For example, for the executable file "contoso.exe", the accompanying XML file is named "contoso.visualelementsmanifest.xml".

Like so:
Don't forget the PNG files for the tile (150x150 and 70x70 pixels). In the example all images get loaded from the 'Assets' folder.
The color of the text can be black or white: aka "dark" and "light". The background color is noted in its HTML value.
So that can be changed according to your needs*:

*You may need to delete and re-pin a tile to be able to see the changes made in the XML manifest ... Read more

Hi there

If you wish to create easily custom desktop Icons from images captured then you can use the LAST FREE VERSION of ICOFX (It Used to be freeware - everybody seems to be trying to Monetise every possible item now -but the last FREE version is still available and the paid version doesn't really have much to offer if you just want to create ICONS).

Last Freeware version: DiskDigger, Amic Email Backup, Mystic Thumbs, IcoFX, phpDesigner, Xinorbis

@Brink - I added a question in your tutorial about How to create the ICONS for Metro apps as you used Custom ZIP one in your example -- perhaps you could delete the remark or refer to the above program which does it easily

1) For Metro simply open the tile and press PRT SCREEN before the application starts
2) Paste to ms WORD / WORDPAD (Standard comes with Windows enter WORDPAD in the Start box)
3) Use Snipping tool to select a reasonable rectangle of the ICON and save as PNG file
4) Import into the ICOFX program - Will create Icon for you
5) Save as .ICO file
6) Now ready to use in Windows.

Hi,

As the post title suggests, I am having trouble with the modern apps and connectivity. It feels like half my computer will connect to the internet, and the other half won't. Desktop apps like Chrome, Steam, Outlook, iTunes etc. all connect to the internet fine, but any of the Windows apps like Xbox, Store and (most frustratingly) Settings will not connect.

In my network and sharing centre in the control panel it says 'You are not connected to any networks' - but in the system tray, and in the settings app it shows me as connected to my home wi-fi. I am on a desktop, and using a USB wireless adapter. I don't think the adapter is the problem as I have tried it on another desktop in our house on Windows 10 and it worked fine. Curiously also, when I click 'Adapter settings' in the control panel, it shows the wifi connection.

I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, both through the Windows update and adapter website but to no avail (and as I mentioned, it seems the adapter works fine elsewhere). I've updated manually to the latest Windows 10 Pro build, i've done a DNS flush, I've tried disabling firewalls and anti-virus, I've tried disabling startup apps, I've done a clean install of Windows 10 and still am unable to fix the issue.

If anyone has any ideas that might help that would be great. I'm happy to provide any more information if people need it.

Thanks very much.

My Top Ten reasons Store Apps are preferred over Desktop Apps
I know what you're thinking. How can a store app be better than a desktop app? Well, the title doesn't say "better", it says "preferred". Read the list, and I'm sure you'll get an idea of the difference I'm talking about.
10. A store app has the capability to do everything a desktop app can do, IF the app developer works at it.
9. Universal Windows Apps are safer. They are obtained by using the Store, and you don't have to worry about viruses from the store apps.
8. Store apps do not slow down your system over time the way Desktop Apps can. They don't use the registry, and don't leave behind traces of files that never get cleaned up like many bad behaved desktop apps do. Reinstalling the OS every year can be a thing of the past.
7. Uninstalling a store app leaves NO traces behind and no clutter in your registry. It uninstalls everything contained it the sandbox for that app. Cleaner uninstall. With Desktop apps, you have to use a 3rd party program to track down and eliminate the traces, and sometimes accidentally kill files that other programs were dependent upon.
6. New Universal Apps for Windows 10 can scale to different screen sizes, resolutions, and DPI better. Desktop apps often become unreadable or unmanageable when attempting to scale to different DPI settings, and often the text on buttons will be cut-off or displayed incorrectly.
5. You can use the input of your choice using Universal Windows Apps. Apps b... Read more

Just how do universal apps fit in with desktop apps and the cloud?
One developer said he didn't want to make a slightly dumbed
down universal version that had only a minimal advantage in that it
could also be used on a phone. It seems to me that developers are better off developing a full desktop app which can run on PCs and tablets. Where is the value in developing for the phone which has only a 3% market share? When you consider that you could run
a full desktop version on a phone via the cloud and continuum, the
usefulness of a universal app seems even less.
To make universal apps worthwhile they need to have the functionality
of the desktop version or else very very close. Is that possible?
I can see that having universal apps allows you to run Office, for
instance, without the cloud; is that enough to make them worthwhile?

I installed many apps locker they all work fine but I can still access apps from the all apps list.

Answer:My apps locker work fine but apps can be accessed from the all apps list, how can I prevent this?

Yes. There is no such thing as a real app locker app in Windows Phones. This is because third party apps are not allowed to interact or interfere with other third party apps due to Windows Phone Sandboxing technology.
If the developer was careful with his app, he or she would have indicated the limitations of the "app locker" he created in the app description. Otherwise, if there is no such disclaimer about the limitations of the app in the app description, the user is encouraged to report the app to Microsoft as a fraudulent or misleading app.

Last night my Lumia 925 randomly locked up (which it seems to do quite often) so I did a soft reset and then noticed a bunch of problems.
First I noticed a bunch of my app tiles were blank or only displaying the app name. That happens from time to time when apps are updated or decide to lose track of the day. So I tried to go in and refresh them. But a lot of them wouldn't open. Others will open but crash immediately, and others still will open and display their info but won't update their live tiles. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling some of them but it has had no effect.
In addition to apps not behaving, various settings windows won't open. I thought maybe my phone updated and the update was buggy, but I can't check because Extras+Info crashes before opening.
Also, in my app list the first 4 apps are things I did not install, and don't look normal. @{Miscrosoft.BingTranslate, @{Microsoft.MSBatterySaver, @{Microsoft.MSCalendar, and @{Microsoft.MSPodcast. Pretty sure none of those are supposed to be displaying that way.
I didn't attempt to install anything. I've been running 8.1. I don't know if there was an update pushed out last night that I didn't notice installing.
But my phone isn't working and I am frustrated.
Anyone know what's wrong or have suggestions?

I save almost everything into Dropbox. When I try and attach an file to an email through the Chrome app (non-desktop version), the Dropbox app (not the programme on running on my desktop) will not allow me to select the files to add. I think this is because the Dropbox app is essentially the same as the website and I would have to download the item first. This wouldn't be a huge problem if I was able to get at the document some other way but I get stuck!

I can attach the document if I switch back to the Chrome desktop app, but I am not sure how I managed to make this change the first time!

Does anyone have any ideas about how to switch from between app modes? Thanks in advance

Answer:UAC and Metro apps

Hello IR123,

If you disabled UAC by modifying the EnableLUA DWORD value to 0 (zero) in the registry key below, then that's why. This does not work the same in Windows 8 like it did in Windows 7. Setting EnableLUA to 0 instead of 1 will break Store apps in Windows 8.

Has anyone noticed what happens when you have more Metro Apps open than can fit in the task list down the left side? With me the screen flashes and the list is cleared and you end up on the start menu. The apps remain open in task manager though but you have to press the tiles to switch to them. That needs some work.

Answer:Too many Metro Apps

That happened to me today for the first time, probably because it was the first time I had quite a few apps open. I'm getting in the habit of closing down the ones I dont think I'll use again in the immediate future.
Its probably some memory thing and hopefully will be fixed.

Hi

I use the excellent Classic Shell on windows 8.1 and love it !

Unfortunately, every now and then Apps try to open files when i double click them.

Also the annoying metro "Start screen" is taking over my desktop from time to time.

I'd like to know if/how to remove all traces of Metro Apps from my environment.

Any advice ?

Thanks !

Answer:Getting rid of Metro Apps

I'm unsure if you can remove all of them. However go to the Start Screen and right-click on each and click on uninstall. The pre-installed one's like Mail, Store, Internet Explorer, etc. may not be able to be uninstalled. Either way, I'd atleast leave the Windows Store one alone. Just like it was needed to get Windows 8.1 from Windows 8, it'll probably be needed for future versions of Windows.

Hi, I'm having an issue and I'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas on what to do about it.

Some desktop apps are missing from the "All apps" section of the Start menu. Most programs are there, but I'd say 10-15% are missing. Apps that are missing also do not show up when searching the Start menu, and they cannot be pinned to the Start screen as tiles from File Explorer. (The option to "Pin to Start" is there, but selecting it doesn't do anything.)

I have a screenshot here of Outlook 2013 missing from the Start menu even though it is present in the "Start Menu" programs shortcut folder. This is one of many examples.

I've tried resetting the Windows Search index a few times and that hasn't done any good.

Additionally, I've tried adding my own shortcuts and folders to the "Start Menu" programs folder and the changes do not reflect on the Start menu "All apps" section. It's as if it has cached the structure somewhere and it is not updating for changes (or it is ignoring some changes). I tried to figure out some way to kick it into resetting but I have not been successful.

Anyone else seen something like this or have any places to look?

Thanks.

Answer:Desktop/Win32 apps missing from Start Menu "All Apps" and search

Windows search has nothing to do with the Metro side of things. You really need to be using either Classic Shell or Start10 to be able to see those items on the desktop.

Until Microsoft has the fixes ready by the 29th, there are going to be issues with this Trialware. It is going to take at least a year under Microsoft's timeline, before they have 10 completed, even though users are using it as their OS on the 29th and beyond.

Hi everyone. I'm running windows 8 on a Toshiba WT200 windows tablet. I have upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8, and everything is working just fine except for the metro apps. Whenever I tried to open one of them, the loading screen for it show up for a couple of seconds, and then the screen goes black, and I get an error message that tells me my computer has to restart.

Other than that, windows 8 works fine. Just wondering if anyone knows a solution to this problem, please and thank you

i have a problem with it since several days ago.
before u read it, please notice that i'm indonesian.
sorry for my bad english.

so, my problem is about UAC.
i know so many posts in this forum about this.
i have some school project with photoshop for making collage and montage.
so i need drag n drop feature on photoshop to help me doing this quickly,
this project makes me imported hundreds of pictures to this app one by one.
using file - open in photoshop to imports those pictures one by one makes me crazy.

the problem is when i disabled UAC completely by changing enableLUA to 0, i cant run any metro apps which is pdf reader, maps, etc.
if i did this, i can run my photoshop without administrator, so drag and drop feature will works.
if i changed enableLUA back to 1, all metro apps works but i must run photoshop in administrator mode.
coz my photoshop won't open without administrator privileges, it always say "you are not allowed to write to the registry"
it makes me cant drop any files from explorer to this app.

i think maybe its because explorer.exe executed without administrator privileges, so i cant drop anything from explorer to any apps that requires administrator privileges.
then i tried to end explorer task manualy by task manager, and executed it as administrator.
but again, i cant access any metro apps with this.
it says "app cant open if file explorer is running with administrator privileges"

i'm stuck.
can anybody help me?

For people who don't quite get metro apps (I don't care what MS says they should be called, but until they come up with a better name than "Modern" or "Windows Store Apps", i'll continue to use the name Metro), consider this.

Metro is turning out to be the single largest motivating factor of new software development in Windows history. The ability for average, everyday joes to write a Metro app, submit it to the store, and have people *BUY* it and pay them is a huge motivating factor.

This is the same ecosystem that has driven the iOS and Android app development markets. Certainly, iOS has been far more successful at getting people to buy apps than Google has with Android, but the fact remains that 100's of thousands of apps exist for both platforms, and Metro apps are quickly catching up.

Yes, the first apps out of the chute tend to be simple, and often times rather useless apps... but as time goes on, those apps mature and become more productive and complex.

Win32 commercial app development is all but dead, and has been for a number of years. If you go into a computer store, all you see on the shelves are Windows, Office, Adobe, and a thousand different anti-malware/anti-virus apps.

Enterprise in-house development is still relatively strong in Win32, but even that has seen huge erosion to Web based apps and mobile apps. For all but a few sectors (Adobe, Office, etc..) commercial apps are nowhere to be found anymore.

What's a budding applicat... Read more

Just out of curiosity, can Windows Defender (or any firewall for that matter), firewall Metro apps and prevent them from connecting?

The only Metro app I've used so far is Minesweeper, and there was no notification of an attempt to connect.

Answer:Firewalling Metro Apps?

Depends on the firewall/how the firewall is set-up, but yes they can. The Windows firewall doesn't have a particularly user friendly interface, so I use a third party one.

For example, BingMaps (Map.exe) is stored in C:\ program Files\Windows Apps\Microsoft.BingMaps...\Map.exe, which although by default you don't have permission to open the folder, if the firewall is correctly configured will pick up that it's trying to connect to the internet via ports 80 and 443 and depending on the firewall will give you the option to block or allow. The same goes for Windows Store with C:\Windows\Winstore\WSHost.exe and C:\Windows\System32\WWAHost.exe, etc.

I don't know if some Apps share the WWAHost for their net connection or not, as I haven't really played with Apps much.

Hello All,
I am having somewhat of an odd issue. When I launch a Metro app, it will show the 'app start screen' but then immediately close. It would appear that the process is still running because I can see it, and others attempted, in the running Metro apps area (top left, mouse down). I recently completely disabled UAC but then re-enabled it to get them to work. I now know that it is not a UAC issue because I have seen the error about it not being enabled. I do believe however, that disabling may have started this issue.

Any tips?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Metro Apps not working

Hello InfectionZer0,

What release (DP, CP, or RTM) of Windows 8 are you using?

The issue with UAC having to be turned on to the default level for Metro apps to run has been fixed in the RTM release though.

Hi, I have installed the Dev Preview on my 10" MSI Wind U100 Netbook (converted into a tablet). The apps in the Metro UI do not open when I click them, and the "News" tile is not animated as it should be. The only tiles I can click on are the Desktop, Control Panel, and non-preinstalled Windows 7 applications like OpenOffice.

I asked this question on a blog, and got a response saying "Make sure your resolution is set to it's highest setting. Sometimes it starts out at 800x600 and metro doesn't work in that resolution." In the Control Panel, it detects the display as "Generic Non-PnP Monitor" and has a greyed out resolution of 800x600. Although I'm pretty sure the desktop is displaying at 1024x600 (my LCD resolution), Metro could be opening at 800x600 (it's hard to tell).

Any ideas what could be causing this and why my Control Panel won't let me change resolution? Any comments are greatly appreciated.

Answer:Metro Apps not Opening

Well, the problem is your resolution is too low. It says Generic Non-PnP Monitor because it doesn't have drivers. If you find drivers, everything should start working.

I was installing this new game and it had errors, part of the troubleshooting of said game was to nuke the app data folder. I have deleted things from this folder in the past on previous OSes just fine with no issues. However after killing this folder the start menu did not work nor did cortana or onedrive. I did find a solution to partially fix it as it restore some of the apps. However its not working specifically for the Windows store. My thoughts is because the guides I found on this were made before the fall update that the name of the apps have changed slightly or something else is different that I have to do. Is there any guide that is updated for the fall update that shows how to reinstall the Windows Store? I have already done the dism restorehealth thing too before someone suggests that.

Answer:Need help reinstalling metro apps

Hello Mansome,

I'm afraid that there's currently a bug in the latest Windows 10 that when you use the usual PowerShell command to reinstall and repair apps, it will delete the folder and break it instead now. Microsoft is working on it, but there's no fix yet.

Usually when this happens, it may take doing a repair install to fix them without losing anything.

Answer:Video: Using two metro apps at once

Thanks. For me, the issue is that the smaller app (the one that is 320px) is in most cases too small to be usable and I cannot make it just a little bit bigger. Just far too limited in the ability to adjust to fit your monitors or the size of the application itself. Some things simply don't need to consume the entire screen from top to bottom. With metro, there is nothing I can do about that.

I can find something that lets me remove basically all metro apps, but we actually want to hold onto a couple. Namely, calculator and camera.
Unfortunately, I've not found anything on how to remove all apps except more than one. I've got something that can remove all but Store, and I can adapt that to one or the other, but I want it to keep both.
Code:
Get-AppXPackage | Where Name -NotLike "*WindowsStore*" | Remove-AppXPackage
Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Where DisplayName -NotLike "*WindowsStore*" | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage ?online

I'd prefer something like this over removing app by app, as there are a bunch of unsolicited apps finding their way into Windows (Candy Crush, Twitter, etc.) month to month.
Any suggestions?

What happens if you press Win key + S?

What happens if you double click on a jpg file?
What happens if you press Win key + X, click command prompt, and enter 'start ms-photos:'? (Without '')

I've been using Win 8 RTM for a while now (and the CP, RP etc before that) and I've realized there are very few decent Metro apps.

There are some nice apps for things like news, weather, and esp games. Some really well designed ones like 'The Big Picture', but a bunch of apps I thought I'd like, such as Kindle, aren't really good. The website/desktop version works much better, doesn't disrupt my flow, and has more options. Apps like Newegg are obviously a total waste on a pc.

Metro is just a nuisance in the end, and its best to keep it out of the way as much as possible. I've tried giving it a fair use, it just isn't productive or have anything of value.

I have the desktop apps for both of those apps as well and im noticing the more files I add to them the more space they seem to take up on my hard drive. When I try to open for example Bing Meteo or Bing Sports, they are opening but not showing the content (each frame is showing an error message).

I guess that I created this mess trying to install a third party firewall.
I tried to turn off firewall (no change in behavior) and to repair with sfc /scannow without success.

This was metn to work with Metro App, is'nt is? But back to the Metro screen you have to close by moving your mouse in the upper right and clicking the Start icon or left of your screen on the home screen. So clumsy. That had to be the other way around.
Even if you open a, not yet Metro ready, app such as MS Office 10, then via the desktop. Not really nice.
All in all, the desktop is still too often the screen.
Then the Mail app. How clumsy can you make it! The display of the contents of your email will not fit on the screen! Moving an email, you can not drag, you need to right click and then click the folder where it should go. Cumbersome!! Some accounts are impossible to implement. Hi, I have a problem here...
I upgrade my Win7 to Win8 Pro and later to Win8 Pro with WMC (using the free key that Microsoft gave). Later I realized that few of my Metro Apps not working especially News, Sport, and Weather. From what I read, this usually caused by the antivirus. But strangely, when I check the other account, that apps are fine, so I think its not the problem.
I even create a new account, and found that those apps were fine. I've using my current account for a long time so it had been so customized, and the data had growing so many and big (more than 13 GB when I check), so I don't want to abandon, moreover delete it. I have tried to create a new account, use the WET (Windows Easy Transfer) to transfer my setting and app data, only to found that the problem come again (I've confirm that those apps were working before transfer my setting). Any ideas about the cause?? Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks, and sorry for my english

I had a similar problem when installing 8 pro over 7, nothing worked. I contacted Microsoft and they were as usual unhelpful, giving solutions such as checking my timezone, anti-virus etc. In the end I did a full clean install and everything worked luckilt I didn't lose much of anything because all my important app installs/docs/pics etc where on a seperate partition, it's been fine since even though WMC took ages to be activated (not that it would have proven to be a great loss!) and even now Windows still tells me it is not activated but when I follow the link it then tells me the opposite. Anyway thats the only solution I found !

I read that it was because of the resolution of the computer, that metro apps requires at least 1024*700 to work, but my computer is on 1600*900, and I tried 1024*768 and 1366*768 and it didn't work, so I don't know what to do.
Thanks for your help ! (and sorry for my English )

Answer:Metro apps don't working

I've only ever had one app crash on me. It worked again after re-opening it. Since then, no problems.

When I went to the metro to open my apps there were white x's on the corner of them. When I clicked one of them it an error message came up saying "This app can't open, windows store can fix this". Annoyed, I re installed all my apps. I still got the same error when I tried to open the apps with the message about how I basically need to re install them. It seems to be one thing after another with this OS!

So I have this problem where metro apps can not see my webcam.
For example when I click the metro app for Camera it says this version is not supported with my version of windows.

When I go to Skype in metro my webcam does not work. However Skype is able to half see my webcam because its know that its my microphone and that it works.

Does anyone know how to fix this. I have the drivers and the webcam works good in desktop mode. My webcam model is a life came IV-3000 (Im pretty sure... its something by Microsoft)

The skype, weather, bing news, bing health & fitness, bing finance, and, bing food & drink apps are not opening. It will show the 'app start screen' but then immediately close. I've read several things can affect it like antivirus but I have McAfee the day I bought my Lenovo Z510 (almost 2 weeks ago) and all metro apps were working fine. I have my UAC on and already did a "sfc /scannow" in cmd (run as administrator). The last resort would be refresh windows 8.1 but I don't want to.

I've spent the whole day looking for solutions but none works. Is this a known issue with no fix? Please help

I installed Windows 8 but I never got to get the Metro Apps working...
The screen with the logo comes up, but then it just goes to a green screen and then back to the home screen!

I was suspecting that it had to do with the Video driver or Silverlight.. but I guess not!

Anyway has an idea?

Question: Metro Styled Apps

I've been searching for some Metro Styled Apps for Windows 8 [apart from Windows Store) for sometime now and unable to find anything much except Genie Timeline Professional

If anyone of you have stumbled upon more such apps, please list here.

Answer:Metro Styled Apps

Microsoft has made Metro where you have to buy apps through the Windows store, similar to Apple's iOS. The only way you can run Metro apps without downloading them from the Widnwos Store is if you're a developer testing your own app that was developed using Visual Basic 2011 beta.

Question: Metro Apps Problem

I don't have Metro (Modern) Apps (Fresh Install). How do i get it?

Answer:Metro Apps Problem

Hi, could you expand on that please?
You've done a clean install, so presumably you can log in and get to a desktop display.
Can you launch the start menu - left click on bottom left button? What happens?
What happens if you press Win key + X?
What happens if you press Win key + S?
What happens if you press Win key + A?
What happens if you double click on a jpg file?
What happens if you press Win key + X, click command prompt, and enter 'start ms-photos:'? (Without '')

Please post screen shots to illustrate the problem you're experiencing. Thanks.

So far pretty much all of the Metro apps I've tried are really terrible, clunky and amateurish. Granted, I have only tried a handful (only FREE apps) but the ones I've tried are pretty bad.

Take, for instance, the Mail app that comes with Win 8. It doesn't allow any form of customization that I can determine. I can't resize the panes (I'd really prefer to turn off the preview pane) and I can't find any way to open an email full screen. Lack of customization seems to be the norm with other Metro apps as well.

I think Metro apps will need to get a whole lot better before they will help Win 8 succeed.

Do others like Metro apps? Can anybody point me to any apps they really like?

Answer:Are there ANY Metro apps that don't suck?

Yeah, there are a few actually.

-Fine Cooking, for recipes and delicious food.
-Radio apps. Most of them are quite awesome.
-Chess.
-News apps
-Sky drive
-Maps. Avoid if you are paranoid.
-Calendar
-One Note FX
-Bing, for the pretty pictures it shows.
-Reader
-Internet Explorer is actually quite cool once you get used to it.

So I have found myself more addicted to my laptop since I installed win 8 on it. Everything I read in the past about win 8 being more for touch screens I was like well I'm not going to upgrade my pc then but now that I have it i'm actually really liking it.

I like the whole metro side of win 8, I mean it really has me thinking. If I can have the same on all my devices I just may dump my Iphone and ipad. I'm assuming the apps on the desktop will be the same for the win 8 phone right? If that is the case, see you later apple I never cared for you much any way...

I have to be honest I don't like switching back to the desktop, I'm sure the desktop will be gone by win 9 or 10 once win eight takes off and third party software goes to the metro side.

One last thing I like to note is if Microsoft promotes win 8 for the phone, tablet and pc all together instead of saying win eight is for touch screens they blow this thru the roof!

Answer:Same metro apps on win 8 phone?

Very much a big YES! The new and also disappointing to some feature of Windows Phone 8 is that it has a shared core with Windows, probably obviously WinRT code.

What that enables is an awesome plethora of options, games, and apps. Unlike ios, where the OS doesn't take full advantage of the device, the new WinRT apps will. An app built for Windows 8 will have a ridiculously easy port over to Windows Phone 8. WP 8 doesn't have a Charms bar, but it will have UI elements to interact with settings and such. That's what I really like about the new metro ecosystem Microsoft is building. It offers a very consistent user experience, but takes advantage of the devices capabilities. An app on Windows Phone 8 takes advantage of the screen size how the user interacts with, meaning the little ... icon for more and swiping left and right to navigate through the apps. That same app can be on Windows 8, but takes advantage of the Charms bar for search, sharing, and settings. Since a tablet PC has more screen estate, more can be shown. And to navigate through the content, it's a simple scroll.

Basically, get rid of the iphone and ipad!

I find it OK to switch between Desktop and Start Screen. It kind of makes me think of the jump list in Windows Phone, where shows a whole screen of little tiles with a letter on it to jump to that section of file names.

You know, I think that could be potentially a good marketing strategy for Windows Phone 8. Power of the PC in your hands? I don't know, ... Read more

What you may need to do is go into "Setting" and do a recovery. Not really sure what could be causing this problem. How long have you had Win 8 installed, and was it working prior to this problem.

They go into "suspended" mode after you go back to whatever you were doing earlier and would presumably kill themselves if ignored long enough, only they dont.

Something happened with the Release Preview's app on my end. Everyone of them will not start up. They all continue to have live updates, but none of them will initialize and launch, except for IE10.

I've tried switching to a local account from using my Microsoft account, and then going back to the Microsoft account, no go.

I thought I could reinstall an app, but the Windows Store won't open either.

Right now, I'm sfc /scannow and hopefully that could work.

Is anyone else having issues?

Question: Broken Metro Apps

Hi Eight Forums.

Yesterday I installed genuine Windows 8.1 Pro.

After installing the OS, all apps worked good. Music app, Maps app, and Skype app.
After using OS for a day, installing some stuff on the Windows which supports windows 8, Something strange happen. Suddenly All my apps marked with "X" on it, repairs didn't work, actually it didn't even start trying repair the apps.
So I've re-installed all my apps, Everything worked beside Music app,Skype app, Maps app, they didn't work. Music app told me that it needs an update when there is no update available (so its broken and i can't use it). Skype app just can't sign in and keeps loading screen then tells me too try again. Maps app just crashes on the app-start screen and it doesn't let me know why it's doing it.

* I've installed Advanced System Care 7 Beta 2 and made deep scan + repair, after broken apps i used the backup to restore the files he erased i though maybe its the ASC which cause the problem. but the apps are still broken.
(No antiviruses/Dangerous software's were installed on my PC besides "ASC" that might cause the problem by the fix to the registry.)

* I switched that day from Microsoft Account to Local Account.
(the reason I've done that is cause i hate the password on windows start-up).

I think that if i could re-install apps without windows already knows everything about them it could rebuild the app cache and maybe fix the problem. but as far as i know its impossible in windows 8 ... Read more

I wonder what the best way is to reinstall a Metro UI app? I am thinking of the Metro UI Wikipedia app. It recently started crashing at start up, but had been working just fine. On the iPad, uninstalling and reinstalling an app, is the way to clear corrupt settings. On Android there is a clear settings function. I am not clear how to do this with Windows 8 Metro UI.

Also I checked the registry. It doesn't seem like Metro UI apps use the registry. I was hoping to delete some settings in the registry.

Bottom line: I am curious how to get the Wikipedia app to come back to life.

Answer:Reinstall Metro apps?

If you right click a metro app tile (checkmark it) you should see an uninstall option on the toolbar that pops up from the bottom of the screen. Then just go to the app store and install it again.

alright, I've started to browse around for good or great Windows 8 apps. I thought maybe a thread for people to post apps they enjoy would help make discovery easier for people. Whatever complaints you guys have, this is not the thread for that. This thread is to help people find apps.

stuff I like:

streaming:
I like the TuneIn app (even though it's really really slow at starting the stream) and the iHeartRadio app. tunein is various radio stations whereas iHeartRadio is ClearChannel radio stations.
Netflix is nice.
pradio for Pandora stuff.
Youtube+ is great (though it does have some flaws).
I just discovered PrimeTube which seems to be a great youtube app as well.
the Tom and Jerry app is great.
VideoSnacker is pretty good.
I like GiantBomb (video gaming).

sports:
the ESPN and SportsIllustrated apps are great (especially the ESPN one with a great notifications system).

photos/editing
I love Perfect365. a great easy to use photo editing app. definitely a nice companion to Photoshop.
Skitch is easy to use and a lot of fun.
Picazoid too.
pictro is a good one.

travel
i like skyscanner and flightaware.

miscellaneous:
the Yahoo app is good.
check out News Bento! very customizable and easy to add your favorite RSS feeds.
MetroTwit is a pretty slick Twitter app.
Wikipedia is awesome (much better than the browser version except for formatting of some tables).
the amazon app is nice.

Hello all,

I don't know if this is intended or not, but my Metro apps will only completely close if I use alt+f4 from within the app to close it. If I pull the app down from the top with my mouse, or I go to the switcher, right click, and click close, the only thing that happens is that my Metro apps get removed from the app switcher, and from the alt+tab list. Using the task manager, I can see that they are still there, and still using the same memory that they were before I tried to close them. With alt+f4, they disappear from the task manager and I get back the memory that they were using. Additionally, when I close them with pulling down or the switcher, when I open them again from the start screen it is as if nothing had happened. They still open into whatever state they were in, and the splash screen with the app icon doesn't appear again like it would if the app had actually closed and been reopened.

This definitely seems wrong as all three options to close apps worked in Windows 8, but in Windows 8.1 only alt+f4 works. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Answer:Metro apps only closing with alt f4

Hello The Visitor,

It has changed a bit on how to close an app from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. In Windows 8.1, you will now need to wait until the app flips to show it's tile when you drag it down to close it.

Here are some more ways to close apps in Windows 8.1.
