Lock screen and timeout not needed for desktop!

Question: Lock screen and timeout not needed for desktop!

I notice that the tablet/phone lock screen is still appearing for Desktop/Laptop installs and wonder why.

Previously when I enable turning off the lock screen in gpedit.msc it turns off the lock screen timeout too. But on the latest build I still get a much sooner timeout to my MS password than what I have set in Power Options.

How do I turn off the supposed Lock Screen timeout when I don't have a lock screen? This is annoying, and surely will annoy MS' billion+ desktop customers who don't need a phone or tablet lockscreen or timeout on their desktop/laptop which already has familar timeouts to password in Power Options.

Preferred Solution: Lock screen and timeout not needed for desktop!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have followed this tutorial to have my account lock after 15 minutes, and it does not work. The account stays open for as long as the computer is on, which is extremely frustrating. This is the biggest thing I hate about Windows 8. Why has this important security/privacy feature been overlooked?

If anyone has a different solution to this, I'd love to learn about it.

Answer:Lock screen timeout does not work

Hello Knocks, and welcome to Eight Forums.

That tutorial is for setting how many minutes Windows 8 will wait idle with no activity when the computer is already locked before timing out and automatically turning off the display instead.

For what you want, you could set screen saver to the "(None)" or "blank" screen saver, check the "On resume, display logon screen" box, and set the "Wait" time to 15 minutes.

Currently have a Lumia 720 and maximum time out is 5 mins which does not help with golf GPS apps such as Free Caddy as it locks soon after each shot rather than be free flowing. May upgrade to 735 if 'never' function is available - as it seems to be in a random selection of Lumias.

Answer:Does the Nokia Lumia 735 have a 'Never' option for the Lock Screen Timeout?

It's not a random selection but a ROM limited feature. Some ROM variants have it, some don't. Same could be said about the static IP option in Wi-Fi settings and field test mode. I don't have a 720 myself so can't really tell you which ROM had it enabled but if you managed to find one you can always flash to that ROM to get the lacking features, a phone change is really not needed.

Does anyone have an idea where the hell the timer for the lock screen monitor standby option is?

It's not a universal setting under the power options/Turn off display which is set to 30 mins.

When at the lock screen the monitor goes into standby in a minute. I want it to match the 30 min timeout, but for the life of me can't find any timeout setting for the lock screen.

Any ideas?

Hello All.
So I just bought a 200GB micro SD card for my 950XL. I copied the contents of my old micro SD card to it, along with my 100+GB music collection. So now Groove on my 950XL is slowly adding all the songs from the new micro SD card but, every time the screen locks, it seems Groove forgets about adding songs and starts again from the beginning again (or just stops and I have to get it to start adding songs again - it then starts from zero).
Is there any way for Groove to add songs automatically in the background without needing the phone unlocked and Groove in the foreground?
Many thanks.

Hi,

I am developing an application in VB.Net connecting to MySQL using MySQL ADO.Net; MySQL engine: ndbcluster.

I am regularly receiving "Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction" OR "A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond". I am able to trace the issue; and it happens when multiple threads are accessing the same row of a table; one thread is trying to update the record and the other thread is trying to delete the same row entry. Both the connections are locking the same row (I am using ndbcluster, and it does row-level locking).

In the VB.Net application I implemented ADO CommandTimeout to 1 sec; this does bring the control back to the application immediately (as Timeout expires), and the application repeats the failed request and it does work. But sometimes the ADO control returns back after a few seconds. Due to the CommandTimeout parameter, the actual error code is masked and I receive "Timeout expired" in the VB.Net application. Whereas I do have a watchdog application running with my VB.Net application, and it captures the error messages mentioned above.

My question:
1. How this needs to be handled gracefully to avoid the error completely.
2. Once the lock is encountered, the execution pauses till the timeout error reverts - remedy for this (if #1 is handled then this would be rect... Read more

I have added the Console Lock Display off time out to the advanced power options. However; the display does not turn off after locking the desktop. The only solution i could find in Windows 8 was to reset the user security policies , but i cannot find that option in Windows 10. Any help is much appreciated.

So I used this walkthrough to set a setting for the lock display timeout,

This used to work fine, but now it doesn't work at all.
I recently installed a few toshiba updates, like the value added package, the system driver, service station, and hardware setup. I'm thinking a toshiba setting is overriding this somehow...anyone else have any ideas?

Every time I boot or wake from sleep, my laptop displays a cool new image from Bing, presumably, but on my desktop this does not happen - I get the same image every time and I'd like it to change too.

I have the Settings... lock screen.. open on both and they both are set the same to "Windows spotlight"

It's bugging me because I can't figure it out!! Any ideas??

I think that Windows knows it distinguish the difference if it's a laptop or desktop. What is the setting in Settings-System-Tablet Mode- "Use the appropriate mode for my hardware"
Since laptops have a sensor for rotating screens, right? and desktops don't...right?

Every morning when I press a key to wake my computer up, I then have to click 2 more times to get off the screen the MS shows me before I can get to my desktop. I think it's called the Lock screen. But it's always some picture with a message up top that says "Like what you see?". When I click on the picture, it then takes me to the Sign On screen. I have no user name an pword. I just hit Sign On and it takes me to my desktop. I don't want to see these pictures every morning and I don't want to sign on to anything. I just want to go straight to my desktop without any clicking. This used to be so easy to do with previous versions of Windows, but I sure can't figure it out now. I don't want to have to put any password on my computer either. I think I have the Lock screen turned off. Thanks for any help.

Over the course of running Windows 10 since its release I'm very confused as to why Microsoft is so vigilant to disable any known registry tweaks or user made utilities that let's you disable the lock screen. What's the point of a lock screen on a desktop PC anyway? It's so annoying to have to click through an extra redundant screen to get to my logon screen every time the system is rebooted, coming out of sleep, or locked, etc. All it is on a desktop is a wallpaper and clock - why not just put the wallpaper and clock on the logon screen? I'm really confused about the forced lock screen in Windows 10 and can't see any real function to it other than it's just a obstacle in the way of logging onto your PC. With the anniversary update I was previously using LogonController_Patchv2 but in a Windows update yesterday Microsoft rendered that utility worthless and doesn't work anymore. What's so amazing behind the lock screen that they're so vigilant to force you to use it when it appears to just be a clock, wallpaper, and extra click to get to your logon screen. I need someone of a higher intelligence to explain it to me because I can't figure it out.

Hi,

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. I made some googling and found other fix it with Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication set to 0, but I dont have it in registry. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

Everytime I press caps lock, change volume i got  a notification pops up that often messes up the window focus. It's particularly annoying when trying to play games. Can I turn this off?

I searched around for other people having the same problem and the one solution I got was to change Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication to 0, but that's already set to 0 for me, and I'm still getting notifications. The solution with removing "lockkey.exe" is not working aswell. I just don't have program like this.

I have Windows Server 2003 setup as a terminal server. We have about 20 clients who connect using XP and Vista machines.

Idle timeouts are set by group policy for 30 minutes and all the machines comply with this policy. One client has recently upgraded to Windows 7. For some reason his account times out after being idle for 10 minutes. I have looked at the event logs on both the client and the server and do not see anything that may cause this issue. Anyone have a suggestion on where I may look to resolve this?

Hello, I have been connecting to my work's terminal server for weeks when suddenly I am getting an error message saying "the remote connection has timed out." I have determined it is not an ISP problem (dial-up) and my IT manager says the server is fine (all others are connecting fine). Does anyone have ideas on how to fix this? We are considering reformatting our hard drive, but not sure what good this would do. Thank you.

Short Explanation:
My Canon MF3240 laser printer is causing a timeout delay in W7, when completing the loading of the desktop when booting (cold or warm).

Long Explanation:
When starting the computer, Windows will load normally to the desktop with near complete functionality. But there is a delay of 60 seconds while something tries to initialize or load. During this delay the blue spinning circle ("Working") can be seen over the Network icon in the systray, and over the Currency & Weather gadgets, and in Windows Explorer at the major headings.

While the "Working" icon is showing I can open the browser and I have internet access. But I can't open task manager or use Windows Explorer until "Working" is done.

The condition was first noticed after I uninstalled my old Canon MP780 printer and replaced it with an Epson Artisan 810. The Canon MF3240 was already installed before this change. I always suspected the Epson printer had corrupted something. This weekend I finally got around to removing all the printers, cleaning up, and reinstalling the printers.

I reinstalled the Epson first (using correct W7x64 drivers) and all was good. Windows boots right up onto the desktop and everything is connected - no delays.

Then I reinstalled the MF3240. Bang - right off - the delay condition.

Now, if I unplug the USB cable for the MF3240 and boot (cold or warm) the delay goes away.

I can access the lock screen settings and I can see all available apps and have set a detailed status app and a couple of less detailed ones. However, when I actually get to the lock screen after having set the apps to appear, there is nothing but the time and date and WiFi in bottom-right corner.

Could this be because I am logging in locally rather than using a MS account?

Can anyone tell me how to eliminate the lock screen preview and bypass the 'Sign In' button on the lock screen?

I often put my computer to sleep then to bring it back (in Windows 7) I would simply hit the space bar and turn on my mouse and it would go straight to my desktop. Now, I hit the space bar turn on my mouse, and it takes me to the lock screen preview then I hit the space bar and it takes me to a lock screen where I have to click 'Sign In' even though I have no password set.

I'm guessing I'll no longer be able to hit the spacebar, turn on my mouse and go directly to the desktop but if I can hit the spacebar, turn on the mouse, then hit the space bar one last time, that would be satisfactory.

Good afternoon,

I just did a clean install of 7 to fix errors with my laptop, and it fixed one, but not the other main issues,
My caps lock, and number lock button on the keyboard don't have a light on it and the pop up that is supposed to pop up doesn't show up on screen.
I figured by doing a clean install it would all magically appear again... I was wrong, I have tweaked everything I could think of looking/trying to change setting from the keyboard in control panel, (including messing around with ease of use) and Gateways so called "support" area was of no help, as well as googling the issue has led me down a path of useless tips, I have also looked on this forum for help.

You need to remove "num lock" for single key print screen request, and if I have a short time frame, I am stuck without being able to screenshot until the num lock indicator goes away.  How do I turn off the on screen display.  Now, before you send me to the previously asked questions of similar nature, I have tried. There is no "display settings" in Control Panel. There is no "advanced display settings" on the settings panel. If you are using Windows 8, then it is important to note that the on-screen indicators for Num Lock and Caps Lock are not available in Windows 8. To know more about this, you can refer to the link below:http://acer.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/30035/~/no-num-lock-and-caps-lock-indicator If you are using Windows 7, you can check if following the steps below helps:1. Click on "Start".2. Type keyboard in the "Search" field.3. Double-click "Keyboard options".4. Go to "Key settings" tab and then, go to "Key settings" list.5. Locate and double-click "Caps Lock" and select the option "Display Caps Lock status on screen". Click "Finish".6. Follow Step 5 for Nums Lock as well. Hope this will resolve your issue.

Ok I've been suffering this issue with Windows 10 for as long as I can remember, and it's stopping me using it as the primary OS.

In short I have two, intermittent issues which nothing I do seems to resolve.

1: After waking up from sleep and typing my username password and hitting return, the screen goes black. Cursor moves, Windows + P operates (Screen options do appear from the right) but doesn't actually make any difference, and I'm stuck having to hard reset because ctrl alt del doesn't work either. This isn't an every time issue, hence googling seems to fail miserably because all the examples are people getting it every time. This, for me, is a 3 in 10 regularity.

2: Logging a user off occasionally sees the lock screen ... locking up. Ironically. Mouse moves, and power button DOES work but that's all that works.

These issues are plaguing me and I just cannot fix them - endless googling has left me empty handed, and I've tried disabling SLI. No help. I've tried disabling apps. No help. Nothing I do makes any difference and event viewer doesn't seem to reveal anything useful either.

Anyone got any idea how I can resolve this?

System is:

132GB SSD OCZ
2TB Seagate HDD
4790K
2x980Ti SLI
32 GB RAM @ 1800 Corsair
Asus Z97-A
Windows 10 & Windows 7 dual boot 64.

Answer:Being absolutely tortured by lock screen lock ups...please help!

Disable Internal PLL Overvoltage. It should be 'Auto' by default. Choose 'Disable' from the dropdown and disable it.

Hi All.

I have a new one installed Lenovo T450s with Windows 10 Entreprise.
I have joined the machine into a domain without some active GPO.
When I'm at home or sitting at a customer and must unlock the screen, it takes a war! It is as if searching for the DNS server for my AD domain as my PC is a member of.
In Windows 7 or Windows 8 there is no problem.
This is not a problem in Windows 7 or Windows 8.
Some have suggestions?

Thank you

Hi all,
This may seem silly, but I can't get screensaver and screen timeout to work properly on my W10 desktop. I set it, even the screensaver preview works as expected but when I leave the PC be, it does not activate. Even when I lock the PC, the lock screen stays on, screen saver does not active, neither does the screen blackout after set amount of minutes. Does anyone else have these issues?

Trying to increase the screen nonactivity timeout parm. Changed all parameters to 2 hours, but after about 10 minutes of nonactivity the screen goes blank and then the screen saver starts. I must be missing a setting somewhere, but do not know which setting will increase this value. This is a desktop hp computer in windows 7.

Answer:screen nonactivity timeout

Hi Chuck. Did you try the Power Options settings already or must be a screensaver settings though not sure if its what you mean by screen non- activity?

Make sure to Save settings just in case.

Answer:Trouble with screen timeout.

Just a thought. Maybe the monitor isn't going to sleep. It could be that your screensaver is set to 'Blank' after 1min. If so, you would need to set it to 'None'

Installed Windows Recovery, via Combofix, but now the startup (Dos) screen exits in 2 seconds, not giving time to make a selection. It was 30 seconds, prior. How do I change it back ?

Answer:Startup Screen Timeout

Right-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop or in your Start menu and choose Properties from the popup menu.Select the Advanced tab, and then the Settings button under Startup and Recovery You should see a window like this:Change the number in the Time to display list of operating systems field to however many seconds you want. Then click OK. That should do it.

I have set my screen to turn off at 2 minutes while plugged in and also on battery. I've tried other times, but nothing changed. After the alotted time, it goes blank, but immediately comes back on. I've tried changing the times, tried it unplugged, tried to use sleep mode at the same threshold, but nothing works. I thought it might be my external monitor, but even with that unplugged nothing works. Powercfg -requests gives me "None" under every category. Powercfg -energy gives me a warning about USB selective suspend, but even with my external hard drive disconnected I get the same results. I bought this laptop with Windows 8. It worked as desired through upgrading to 8.1, but with 10 it does not. There are no display driver updates from ASUS. Since it's not sleep mode that's the problem (I THINK), there are no reports in event viewer, and last wake is when I opened the lid.
I want the screen off, but I'm not asking for it to go to sleep (unless I can keep my external HD awake, which TBH I don't know is possible). I don't mind closing the lid occasionally, but I run Plex (with the external HD) before going to sleep and I'd like to have my screen turn off without Plex losing connection to my server. I believe I've given all the relevant info, and when I registerred I entered some info about my laptop (but I don't know how easy it is to access). Thanks for any help.

My computer auto-upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7. Though I am growing to like Windows 10, this screen timeout issue is actually causing me problems in my profession.

I have read through the forums to figure out why my screen is timing out. I have tried installing the System Unattended Timeout, and setting it to 0. I have tried changing my screensaver to None. I have tried everything suggested, and cannot resolve the issue. My screen still times out after 60 seconds.

I have a presentation Saturday, and my PowerPoint slideshow has a number of slides that show videos, one after another. Because my screen times out, I cannot let this run like it should, I have to constantly keep moving the mouse to keep the presentation up on the screen. This is going to appear very unprofessional. Please help. I really need to be able to put my best foot forward in this presentation.

The screen timeout behavior on my Yoga 13 has been rather erratic.   Even though all the power management settings and screensaver settings are set to at least 15 minutes, it will often timeout directly to a black screen in only 1 or 2 minutes of no activity, requiring me to wake it back up and login again. I recently figured out that this does NOT happen if I touch the screen periodically.  Then it seems to function correctly.  For example, after several minutes of inactivity it will actually go to the screensaver.  This NEVER happens if I don't touch the screen and instead use only keyboard and mouse. One thing that might be a factor is that I am using an external wireless USB keyboard and mouse. Either way, the screen timeout is supposed to reset the countdown anytime there is keyboard, mouse or touch input.  This is not happening. Is there a fix for this?

Hiya,
I am trying to fix this laptop

The problem is that the screen is always very dark, even though it briefly flashes up ok for about 1 second when it is POST'ing. I thought at first that the screen was dead, so i connected it upto an external monitor which worked fine, then I started to press Fn and F11 to cycle through the available displays and noticed something strange.

With the external monitor connected the laptop screen is very dark but you can just make out a few things, press Fn and F11 and both the laptop screen and extenal monitor go blank, press Fn and F11 again and the picture appears for about 1 second on the laptop OK then goes back to being dark but just making out a few things and the external monitor is OK.

Is the laptop screen completely dead or not? If so why does it briefly display OK?

I have emailed the technical support people and all they said was
?It sounds like the timeout switch is faulty?
Any idea what a timeout switch is and can it be replaced without replacing the screen? I have replied back to them asking them similar questions but I?m think I may get another ?detailed? email like the first one.

Thanks,
Steve

Answer:Laptop screen and timeout switch

you will find that the timeout switch is the switch that turns the screen off when you shut the lid. to replace the switch, you will have to dismantle the laptop so that you can remove the damaged switch and then replace it with the new switch. can you use a soldering iron. most times they are soldered onto the M/B. if you are lucky, it won't be. good luck

I Installed MySQL/PHP/Apache in the last few weeks (an ordeal to say the least!) and now I get a blank screen after about 20min instead of my happy screensaver at 60min. THis timeout also seems to interupt running programs or downloads. I have looked in all three conf files and extended all numbers that look to be timeout instructions but no change.....

Hello, I have set the screen timeout to go off after 20 minutes and it works fine, but when I hibernate my PC then power on again, the screen timeout does not work and the screen stays on forever.

I don't know if it's a Windows problem or my system's fault. I don't care if I have to set a task to run after hibernation to recover this functionality, but I haven't found any workaround yet.

Is this normal behaviour? Is there a workaround I can check?

Thanks.

Answer:WinXP Inactivity Timeout to Login screen

I think this occurs when you resume from screensaver when you have password protection on resume enabled.

Start --> Settings --> Control Panel

Display Settings

Click on the ScreenSaver tab and change the screensaver timeout. Also you could untick the box that says password protect on resume. You might also check the power saving settings.

I've repeatedly tried to change my logon screen saver timeout time via Start | Run regedt32 | HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop\ScreenSaveTimeOutbut although it faithfully stores the number of seconds I want, it keeps actually timing out after 10 minutes no matter what. You should be able to press any key to turn the screen back on. If you are referring to sleep mode, if pressing a key isn't waking the computer up, open up Device Manager, expand keyboards, right click your keyboard and click Properties, then go to the Power Management tab and check the "Allow this device to wake the computer" box.

A couple of weeks ago I bought an S205 without OS and installed my own copy of XP on it (SP3). I spent a long time trying to dual boot with Linux but the UEFI system seems to prevent this... I'm not tech enough to understand why, but I gave up trying after a week tearing my hair out. Anyway, XP runs nice and quick now but I have 2 problems with it. 1 - When I put the computer in standby mode it wakes itself up sometimes for no reason. This happens even when there are no applications open. 2 - The screen turns itself off after 1 minute. I have installed Lenovo Power Management, and no matter what the settings are in this, the screen ALWAYS turns itself off after 1 minute. Checked in Windows Power settings, but the Lenovo software seems to override these. Any help or advice much appreciated. Thanks

Hello again everyone!

I have set my screen saver timeout to 1 minute awhile ago and now it won't allow me to change it to anything else. Even if i uncheck the "On resume, display logon screen" it still times out to 1 minute with "None" selected and the check box unchecked. After one minute of no activity, the log on screen is shown (after the lock screen).

I have tried everything except "Refreshing windows settings"

I am really annoyed and never had any troubles before. Google isn't helping either, everything Google showed I have tried. One things said about resetting security policies under user accounts but i do not have anything like that.

Thanks everyone!

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows 8.1 Screen Saver timeout stuck at 1 min

Hi did you see this post

You may be at the wrong screen. You are most likely under PC Settings -> Accounts. The easiest way is to just press the windows key -> type: "user accounts" -> Reset Security Policies, located on the upper left hand side of the window.

Also found under:

Control Panel -> User Accounts and Family Security -> User Accounts

If it is not located under there then I believe that no changes have been made that require a reset, or you may have a different issue at hand other than an application enabling a 1 minute auto-lock feature onto your window's user account.

Good Luck.

Hi! So, I've upgraded to Windows 8 RTM this weekend and I'm having this problem: Every time I boot the PC (shutdown or restart), the Num Lock key is off. Since my password uses numbers, and I'm pretty used to type it with Num Lock, I'd like to keep it always on. It was fine on Windows 7. Now, I've searched for it, and there is the "InitialKeyboardIndicators" key on regedit. I have changed values for all of them to "2", and it didn't work. My BIOS say to keep it always on. Is there anything else that I'm missing?

Answer:Num Lock always activated on lock screen

Netplwiz, or tap num lock before starting password entry.

Besides those, you can check to make sure keyboard is plugged in directly to motherboard instead of add-on card or something.

I brought a dell latitude d600 from a flea market it's used and is password protected. The program that's showing the log in screen is Novell v4.90.0.0 sp1a. If anybody know how to unlock this please let me know. Again it's Novell Client for windows. Or how can I reset the whole notebook? After it powers up and passes the Windows screen It asks for a password.

In the Registry Editor window, locate the following registry key: HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop In the right pane, double-click ScreenSaveTimeOut. In the Edit String dialog box that appears, type the number of seconds after which you want the screen saver to start in the Value data box, and then click OK. For example, if you want the screen saver to start after 5 minutes, type 300. Click Exit on the File menu to quit Registry Editor.###################################

Answer:Tutor for editing Windows XP Screen Saver Timeout Settings

Why not use the inbuilt Windows XP feature rather than messing in the registry?:Right click desktop > Properties > Screen Saver tab. Set the wait time there.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I'm 'mildly' comfortable with doing '' settings' but please reply as if you're talking to a 5yr-old !! then i'll understand you LOL....I have to make a regional move....computer will not travel with me, but with commercial movers. If it would get lost i want no accessibility to it.
Win 8....i know if i click on ''start' (in charms area, right side of screen) find the picture upper right screen & click it, the option to 'lock' is an option . When i clicked on it a popup appeared asking if i want to 'continue' (i didn't) because i didn't want it to lock immediately (if that's what would happen) because i wouldn't know how to get out of the 'lock' !!!
2. I did find 'power options' in control-panel with a choice (that is recommended but never used) to require a password to awake computer from 'sleep-mode' . What is the difference between the two choices (above #1 or P.O. ''sleep-mode''area choice?
I am the 'administrator/owner' - no one else uses the computer but i don't think i have a password because i had store set-up computer for me when i bought it....it came ready to use with no password needed.
Thanks so very much in advance for any in put ! Edythe

I've been using Windows 10 for just over one year. For some reason the Lock Screen/Sign-in screen shows three users. All three are me in three iterations. I find also that when trying to save some excel and word documents I receive messages saying that i am not allowed to save to this folder or that folder. I am able to save to the desk top and then drag and drop the document into the folder that I need to place it in. I know that this must have something to do with "permissions". Not sure how to fix that. One of the accounts that shows up is the initial account that I created back when hotmail.com was around. Any ideas/advice on these issues? When i updated to Windows 10, pretty certain that i followed all of the instructions, although that has been over 1 year now. Thank you in advance...cheers and beers to all!

Hope this is allowed here...Soldier of Forune Special Edition...haven't played it for a while, tried today and it says the violence lock has been activated so I can't play the full game with gore. I am the only adult in the house and have never "locked" the violence button. Tried uninstall via add/remove, searched for any files left, cleaned the registry with regseeker but on reinstallation it says "game was previously installed with violence lock, you need a password". I am very adult (44!) if not mature and have tried all my usual passwords, despite being sure I have never applied the violence lock. Any ideas??

Answer:technical help needed with violence lock on a game

Im not sure but have you tried the gold patch for it,you may even have the patch with the game but it may help, its about 100 odd meg if i remember right.

I have an x61t that when it locks for screen saver password and you have to CTRL ALT Delete the relog back on. the CAPS lock on the onscreen keyboard indicates on but it's not. 1. Log into the tablet.2. The screensaver would lock the tablet.3. Press Ctrl Alt Delete to get to the logon screen.4. The on screen keyboard would show the Caps Lock key as on but it wasn't. If they pressed the Caps Lock key it would then be on.5. The users don't press the Caps Lock key now, even though it is being displayed as on, and they can logon OK. I cannot recreate this problem on another X61tablet and this behaviour happens even when the notebook is in a docking station with an external keyboard.  anybody seen this error before?

Hello,
I have just 2 days ago built a second box of old parts and decided to give W8 a try. It runs remarkably faster IMHO than the Ubuntu 64 bit, I was using previously. Having no second drive I can not backup the system and have had to reload numerous times for undetermined reasons and general mess-ups. On my main box in msconfig > Boot Tab > Advanced tools there is a box (actually many), I don't understand. It is the PCI lock checkbox, which is checked on my W7 machine. It is not in this W8 machine and I would like to know if I should check it and possibly a elementary explanation of it's function. I am trying to learn... Thanks for any assistance!
Glenn

Answer:Boot tab > Advanced options - PCI Lock - Help sorely needed!

Like all other options in msconfig, this too should be unchecked. Its purpose is to prevent Windows from dynamically allocating resources (I/O ranges, IRQs, etc) to devices connected to the PCI bus (note that devices don't actually need to be plugged into the PCI slots, many are devices that are present as part of the built-in hardware on the motherboard). In other words, if this option is checked then resources that are set by the BIOS are maintained. Note that devices, such as serial/parallel ports, may be enabled or disabled in the BIOS. Such devices, if disabled, have no resources allocated to them regardless of the PCI lock checkbox.

Hello,

You are familiar with how the Lock Screen Slideshow plays, where it sometimes puts one image on the whole screen and slides to the left or right / fades the picture away, and loads multiple pictures sometimes, varying by size, and other fancy variations, etc. Has anyone figured some method to be able to use that same method for the Desktop Slideshow as well? It would be nice to see many different pictures/combination of pictures within small amounts of time on the Desktop itself.

Thanks

Answer:"Lock Screen Slideshow" For The Desktop Slideshow

3rd party program like Wally (free), for example.

I use it to change wallpaper on each logon, but it can be set up in a variety of ways.
It can use pictures from disk, or a variety of other sources.
