Dell XPS 13: Freezes on Dell logo on restart, but boots from cold fine

Question: Dell XPS 13: Freezes on Dell logo on restart, but boots from cold fine

Morning - we just bought (our second) XPS 13 which I did a clean install of Windows 10 on (to claim back as much disk space as possible). All okay, except when selecting 'Restart' from the 'Start Button/Power', the computer freezes on the Dell logo, not even getting to the spinning dots stage.

If I turn the laptop off and re-boot, all is well. Also, if I go into BIOS/UEFI and re-boot from there, it boots back to Windows okay: Windows will just not restart itself. Since the BIOS re-booting works okay, I was wondering if this is a Windows problem (Dell have been no help at all on their forums for me).

All the drivers are up-to-date, as are all the MS upates, which are set to automatic.

Any help would be much appreciated - by all those on the Dell forums!

Many thanks,

Chris

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I have been facing with this strange issue lately. On pressing the power button the laptop powers up with the lenovo logo then it again goes blank, then it again comes with the same lenovo screen and then boots fine directly into the welcome screen, which is fine but this isn't how it used to boot up until a week ago.

A week ago upon pressing the power button the lenovo logo popped up and after few seconds it went directly to the welcome screen, it took about 8-10 sec to boot up but now it takes double the time, sometimes even a minute to go into the welcome screen because it boots twice.

I have done test with the lenovo hardware solution tool which returned no error. I haven't made any changes to bios settings and the laptop is very mildly used just for movies and word tasks.

Answer:Laptop boots into LOGO screen then restart, then again reboots fine.

The zip you uploaded contains only one crash dump which is fairly old than the time you are talking about. And, your issue is not a BSOD issue, apparently.

my dell desktop has been booting to the xp logo with the green bars cycling throgh then when xp should start booting up it turns black and has the mouse in the middle of the screen.
this problem occured a while back but needed less power cycles to get the computer to start up to windows XP. now it practically will not start and i can only use this computer on safemode..
when, after 20 power cycles, yesterday i got it to start up correctly but then suddenly a screen with a weird language took over the screen. I hit CTRL ALT Delete but the screen took over again.. I kept hitting CRL ALT DELETE several times until i could end the proccess called IEXPLORER which seemed to take that screen away and the computer seemed normal and operational.

When I startup my PC the Dell Logo screen only shows the Dell Logo.  No Choices for F2 - Setup or for F12 f- Boot Options and there is no progress bar.  However, the F2 and F12 keys will activate the correct screens F2 - Enters BIOS and F12 show the Boot Options Screen.  But, nothing shows the Progress Bar.
Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Answer:XPS 8700 boots, but Dell Logo screen missing F2, F12 and Progress bar

This is by design.  The progress bar is 10 year old phoenix bios which is no longer used.
You cannot run MSDOS or WIN98 or XP or Vista on that machine.

Hi thenextstar ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

SInce it passed the hardware test, what you can try is to isolate startup programs that may delay booting.
Try to disable some start up application and likewise performing clean boot may help.

Check how it goes after this initial steps.

I have a really weird problem: If I turn off my comp, (Intel Pentium 4, CPU 1.60 GHz, XP Pro),
it does not want to boot up,all I hear is the fan starting over and over again and see the CD-Rom light blinking with it. Reboots fine once running, but i never know what I've done to get it going....can take hours....so I never turn it off anymore. .....Thing is....I have a DSL modem....and when the comp is off...it interferes with this modem......and turns the 'enet' light off on the modem.......any ideas would be greatly appreciated

I can't tell exactly when this started as I have upgraded the NVIDIA drivers as well as the Dell bios and switched from running the onboard Intel HD 630 to GTX 750ti , but now on a cold boot, with the fast startup off, the screen flashes white for a sec after the Dell logo. It could possibly be white noise but I can't focus on it fast enough. It doesn't happen on restarts. I'm connected via hdmi out to a LG TV.
Dell XPS 8910 using the NVidia GTX 750ti and an HDMI TV as monitor Bios version is 1.1.0 ,1.1.0 Original version was 1.0.9, 1.0.9, can I revert back to 1.0.9 ?

Hi, my 2 month old pc wont go past the Dell logo screen when you switch it on and none of the F keys work.  I have looked at the troubleshooting on the website and it seems I may need to download a BIOS update but how can I run that update on my Dell pc?  Does anyone have any other solutions to my problem, I will give Dell tech support a ring on Monday but just wondered if there was anything else I could try in the meatime? Many thanks

Answer:PC freezes on Dell logo on start up

Hello. You can try to release the static. In order to do that you just have to power off the computer and then remove the adapter and the battery.
Then push and hold the power button for more than 10 seconds and then power on the computer on just the adapter.
Try this and if it didnot work then please let me know.

I am running Windows 8.1 - the same o/s that came with my Inspiron 15-5547.
I move the computer between work and home. When I put  to sleep, and unplug it from power, then next time I turn on the computer, about 50% of the time it resumes correctly.
However, the other 50% of the time, I turn on the computer and it is displaying the round Dell logo on a black screen (like BIOS startup).  But the computer remains frozen on the screen and Windows does not load.
I need to hold down the power button to shut down, and then I wait a few seconds, and turn the computer back on.
At this point, the computer will usually load Windows correctly.  A few times I still get the frozen Dell screen and then just power off/on again.
Does anyone have any tips to fix this?  I am afraid that one day, Windows just won't load at all and then I'll be stuck.
Thanks,
Mike

Answer:Inspiron 15-5547 sometimes does not restart from sleep and gets stuck on Dell Logo screen

Always turn the computer completely off (shutdown) before moving. Leaving a computer Sleeping and then transporting it can damage the computer. Laptops use battery power when sleeping. They can overheat or worse when transported while in Sleep mode.
Make sure you sometimes use the laptop on battery power alone--without the adapter. Batteries last longer when they are regularly used on battery and recharged regularly.

Hello,
I own a E6420 which I intended to rejuvenate a bit, by replacing the HDD by a SSD.
I replaced the HDD by the SSD but the SSD was not recognised by the bios. Hence I entered the BIOS and tried to change the SATA setting from RAID to ATA.
Oops. Very. Wrong. Move.
The laptop hasn't booted ever since. The dell logo shows, but when the progress bar is complete I only get a black screen. If I try to press F2 or F12, the upper right message shows (entering setup...) but the freeze happens anyway, usually with the upper part of the screen being black and the lower part still showing the remains of the dell logo.
What have I tried? Many boot tries:
- with the old HDD
- without any hard disk at all
- without any disk (no HD, no optical)
- with or without the battery...
- with a bootable Windows install DVD in the optical drive
- with a bootable USB diag stick made with https://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/04/SLN143196/EN
All this with no avail.
I've also tried to clear the BIOS settings (going back to factory settings seems a good idea) by unplugging the cell coin battery. (and yes I did it by the book, with the power button down during many seconds sequence). After re-plugging the cell coin battery, the boot sequence is longer before the logo appearance (and funny enough, just plugging back the laptop starts it), but the end of the story remains the same. Pressing F12 gets to half logo freeze. Period.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 Laptop that freezes up after being on for only 3-4 minutes, and also when it is moved. After freezing up, I have to unplug the computer and remove the battery. Generally it will not start again for several hours, when the power button is pressed the device status lights blink for a few seconds. When the computer will restart, there is no message indicating there had been trouble.

I have very little knowledge of hardware, and any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It could be any number of things but my first 2 guesses are possibly the hard drive or motherboard.you might want to take it somewhere so that you will get a correct diagnosis.

Earlier today I did a factory reset on my laptop. After a couple hours I went to check on the status and the screen was totally black but the mouse still showed. I figured maybe it needed to be rebooted, but rebooting it gave me the same results.
Is there a key that I can press that will show up an option to do a reser again? I seriously am at a loss. To better help explain, I'm attaching a video of what exactly happens every time I start my laptop.

Run an extended diagnostic on the hard drive (F12 at powerup) before proceeding.

I need some help with my old Dell Studio Laptop. I don't know the exact make, but I am pretty sure it is from 2010. Anyway, a few weeks ago, I put a disc into my laptop and shortly, the laptop started making strange noises. I managed to eject the disc, but now whenever I try to start up the laptop, I cannot. After the Dell logo pops up, it says there is a problem with starting my computer (this is a blue, Windows 10 screen, as I downloaded Windows 10). I have tried restarting, following that blue screen to "Troubleshoot," "Advanced Options," "System Restore," etc., but nothing is working. I have some photos on my laptop that I would like to recover before this situation gets any worse. Thank you!

Answer:Dell Studio Laptop (2010?) Won't Start Past the Dell Logo

First thing to do is remove the hard drive, mount it in an external case (example below) and attach it to a working system to make a backup of those files.
Once that's done, you can proceed with the Dell diagnostics (F12 at powerup) -- test the entire system AND run an extended test on the hard drive.  If there is an error, replace the faulty part.  If not, you can proceed with a repair or reinstall of the OS.
Get the files backed up NOW before you go any further.

Answer:Dell Laptop w/ Windows 8 won't boot past dell logo screen

Hello Univers789,
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.

Hi,
Greetings!
I would like to ask for your assistance because I'm already out of ideas how to resolve this issue. Right after I powered up the laptop, it will get past the DELL logo screen, then it will be completely just black screen. I wouldn't even hear any activity from the CPU fan, HDD and pressing the Caps Lock doesn't lit up the LED. The LED indicators on the side are only displaying the power indicator, but none for HDD, Battery and Wireless.
Here are the steps that I have done so far:
1) Removed the HDD and Battery, then press & hold the power button for at least 45-60 seconds to disperse the internal voltage. Then attach the Battery, but not the HDD.
2) Press and hold Fn and then the Power button, hoping to boot me up to the ePSA Diagnostic Utility
3) Press F2 or F12 while booting up
4) Re-seat the memory and also clean with a dry tissue
These are the procedures that I have done but nothing has changed. It still displays blank screen right after the DELL logo.
I do hope that you could assist me on this. Thank you so much!

Then today out the blue it came on as normal. I went to run a diagnostics test from a link Dell sent me and it asked me to restart the computer. I did and then it  did what it did before and has not come back on since. They have said it could be the motherboard. Any other suggestions ? Thanks

I can't press F2 F8 or F12 because it freezes at this point.
Releasing the residual charge did nothing (I drained the battery, have no courage to remove battery as the procedure is kind of complicated) - same problem
Restarting and tapping F12 highlights 'Boot options' but at this point it freezes.
Restarting with Fn pressed had no effect - same problem.

I'd suggest you try to get system to boot into the Recovery Repairs screen. At the Dell logo screen, turn off your computer using the hard reset /power button. Keep turning the computer on and off until you see your PC booting into the Recovery Repairs Option screen, see image below. It should only take a few reboots.

Dell N5030: W7 wont start. Dell logo > black screen. How to restore?

Hello friends

Please could you advise me. My friend has asked me to help with her Dell N5030 Inspiron laptop. She has had it for about just over a year now. Dual-core Pentium, 4GB RAM, W7 64bit. She is not computer savvy and I dont know how shes managed to do this but heres the problem:

1. You press the power button
2. The Dell logo appears along with the F2 & F12 options for Setup & Boot Options
3. This is followed by a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left. Thats it.

All this happens in the space of 6 seconds (power-up to black screen). Nothing else happens, no Windows logo screen, no Microsoft logo, nothing. Screen stays black with the cursor and the laptop instantly turns off when I press the power button.

My friend was desperate because she had over 740 family photos and some important documents she didnt want to lose. I was able to recover all of those using a Linux Mint live CD so at least shes all smiles for that

Using Mint made me realize that the hardware was working perfectly. The hard drive was good, no mem faults and of course the optical drive was fine. So its something with Windows 7.

Also while using Mint I could clearly see the Dell Recovery Partition. The problem is I dont know how to get the Inspiron to fire it up - because I cannot even get into Safe Mode where the "Repair your computer" option is.

When I pressed F12 al... Read more

You would need to find someone very good at soldering to permanently fix it. Motherboards are often multi-layer and it is easy to solder things together that you shouldn't. In manufacture they are fitted by flow soldering (bath) techniques. Thanks for the feedback.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hey Folks,
I have a Dell 15 5559 laptop with a 500gb SSD & 8gb ram.
It works fine only for the boot up. It takes about 9 seconds to get to the Dell Logo from the moment I press the power button. After that it boots fine.
Considering the spec of the laptop, this boot time is terrible. When I contacted dell support they just said that they don't guarantee boot times.

From the research I have done, the problem lies with the bios. (I have the most up to date bios)

Has anybody found any fix for this?

thanks in advance

I doubt Dell have done anything - your computer has developed a fault,Tap F8 key during startup and see if you can see a menu with Safe Mode mentioned. If it is there go for it and let us know if it then boots up. Note that in Safe Mode things will look rather different (large icons etc). If this fault came on recently and you can get into Safe Mode then you could do system restore to a time before the problem came along - type System Restore in search.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Prior to this, I was gaming and my screen froze with many blue and white vertical lines across. I held down the power button to restart, but it only loads till the Dell logo with the dots circling then the screen will flicker with some random lines across (see attached image) and then it goes completely black after.

I tried many times to start and in 1 out of 5 tries, sometimes the Dell logo appears with "Please Wait" at the bottom and there are options to Troubleshoot, I am able to enter the Safe Mode with Networking.
I tried doing a system recovery to an earlier date in Safe Mode and it ran till the part when it had to restart with the Dell logo, the same screen with lines appear again or sometimes just a black screen after the logo.

Hello,

I have a problem with my new laptop and it happens only sometimes. It is around 1 month old and it had this problem from the beginning . The laptop is a DELL INSPIRON 3552
1. DELL LOGO appears
2. Screen backlight is ok
3. Windows won't start ( window's logo doesn't appear ) and if i plug an external mouse the cursor is on the black screen.
If I shut down the laptop from the power button and the start it again it works. It's very random. Once I had to restart the laptop for 3 times before the windows started.
Any ideas ?

Answer:DELL Inspiron Windows screen black after DELL logo

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
As we understand that the system doesnt not boot and just goes up to the Dell logo and after multiple restarts the system works fine.
In that case ,Can you boot the system into " Safe mode " and check if the same happens..You can also perform a system restore and also check for updates pending .
Thanks

I have an ASUS n80vn laptop that is about 3 years old. It came with OEM Windows Vista, but I installed my own copy of Windows 7 Professional 64bit more than two years ago, and there was no problem upon installation.

Lately (for about a month), I have been receiving BSOD either during boot or the log-in screen. The BSOD usually happens only once per day, and I would be forced to restart my computer. No BSOD upon restart. I suspect the problem occurs when the laptop is cold. I have attached the BSOD Dump files collected over the past month.

The only driver change I've had was nVidia graphic driver updates. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the two most recent drivers and the BSOD problem still occurs.

On a side note, I have been getting random freeze-ups too, and this has been happening before the BSOD problem. These freezes occur when I'm doing regular tasks such as web browsing or typing in Word/Excel etc. When my system freezes, there is no BSOD, but nothing can be moved (keyboard + mouse won't do anything). Closing lid does nothing too. Strangely, I have not been getting this kind of freezes when I play games.

I am having a hard time pinpointing the source of the problems. Any assistance is much appreciated.

Quick rundown of specs:
-Windows 7 Professional 64bit (retail)
-Age of hardware: ~3 years
-Age of OS: ~2
-Processor: Intel core duo P8600 2.40 GHz
-RAM: 4GB
-GPU: GeForce 9650m GT

Answer:Daily BSOD on cold boots & random freezes

Hi all,
I have just acquired a dell Inspiron 5547 laptop. I believe it originally shipped with Windows 8 but the previous owner has upgraded it to Windows 10. I went into the control panel of Windows 10 and chose the option to remove the previous users data and reset the pc. However mid-way into the reset I received an error saying "there was a problem while resetting your pc" and then gave me a few options I selected "continue, exit and continue to Windows 10" however after this the laptop will not boot. It sits on the dell logo and then goes black then returns to the dell logo. I am unsure of what to do, and when I press F8 I cannot access recovery. Do I need to reinstall Windows 10 from a USB? If I do so how will I activate it as the original Windows 8 product key is not on the back. Thanks

Hello.

My old Dell Dimension 8400 P4 starts to boot but the screen goes black after the Dell Logo. The power was accidentally shut off on the power strip that the computer is connected to and after I turned the computer back on, this problem occured. I ran a computer diagnostic, I have tried to get to the screen to allow me to boot in safe mode by pushing F8 but when I do that I get a message that the keyboard has an error.

Please help if you can.

Hi. I have a dell xps 13. I purchased it in nov 2012 and it is running windows 8. It has been working perfectly until yesterday. When I turn it on the dell logo flashes up then it stops. I can see the f12 option in the bottom right and have managed to run diagnostics. It says there are no errors. It's like the laptop is running but I can't see anything on the screen. So frustrating. I tried to log a call but the dell site can't recofnise my service tag.

Please help. Kaisha

Answer:Dell xps 13 won't boot. Stuck after dell logo flashes up

Hi Kaisha,
It would be upsetting when the system is struck at the Dell logo. Please follow the steps provided below that can resolve the issue:
?Restart the computer and tap on Dell logo .Disable ISRT in the BIOS setup menu by selecting SATA mode and changing it to AHCI. .Save the changes and reboot windows.?Reboot from windows and enter BIOS setup menu again to set SATA mode back to RAID.?Restart Windows again and follow the steps below to Enable Intel Smart Response technology?Launch Intel RST UI from system TrayStep?Click Accelerate icon on top of page then click "Disassociate”?Click on “Select Device” under “Accelerated device” as none.?Select HDD and Acceleration mode to "Enhanced mode"?HDD will now accelerate again.
Also, Install the Microsoft update from the below mentioned link:http://bit.ly/TM4KqW
On the above link click on “Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2756872)”
Please let me know about the status of the issue.

Answer:DELL Latitude 3340 Stuck at DELL LOGO

Hi james.hilham,

I would like to look into this further, can you Private Message me your Service Tag on the system? Also, it sounds like you might have seen the Diagnostic Boot Screen, but can you try these steps below to see if it gets any further:

1. Disconnect the AC adapter from the system and remove the system battery.2. Hold down the Power button for approximately 10 seconds to drain any residual power and then release the power button3. Hold the power button down once more while inserting the AC adapter into the system. This will initiate the Forced ePSA which may clear the state causing the system to remain at the Dell splash screen.4. Release the power button once you see any text on the display or the Dell splash screen\5. The Dell ePSA (Pre-boot System Assessment) diagnostic page will next appear6. If the ePSA page does not appear then the recovery method was not effective.7. Should ePSA initiate allow it to complete the quick test to determine if any component failures exist.8. Should the system recover from the condition and boot into the operating system, it is very important to update the system BIOS immediately after the system has recovered to prevent a reoccurrence.

You also view a video on the steps here:
Lastly, when the system freezes at the Dell startup screen, can you let me know if there are any diagnostic LEDs, such as a certain blinking light pattern (there might even be solid lights) for the HDD LED, Power LED, and/or the Wireless L... Read more

Hi,

The PC boots up fine - I know it's going through POST properly and everything works, there's just no display. What I've tried:

1. Replaced DVI cable.

2. Upgraded graphics card (not specifically to fix this). Re-seated card.

3. Checked BIOS graphics configuration. This was set to 'Auto' instead of PCIE, which I changed. However, after re-starting it always reverts to Auto. I don't know if this is related to the problem but why would it reset itself in the BIOS?

4. Updated the BIOS from 3402 to 3603.

When I do get in and start gaming the card works fine; it's just a pain having to do five resets every time I want to fire it up.

My BIOS graphics config (Advanced -> System Agent Config) is:
Initiate graphic adapter = PCIe (but keeps reverting to 'Auto')
iGPU memory = 64M (I've tried this on all settings)
Render standby = Enabled/Disabled (tried both)
iGPU multi-monitor = Disabled

Thanks

Answer:Boots up fine but no display (needs restart)

I would swap out your CMOS battery on your motherboard, is probably dead, CR-2032 model #, $3ish part.

Should be saving BIOS settings as long as you did a SAVE there before exiting it.

Hi all, as the thread title says, I am having trouble with my laptop. I just reformatted and did a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64. I have installed all Windows Updates and installed all drivers in the order Dell specifies here: How to reinstall drivers in the correct order | Dell US EXCEPT for the video drivers. I should mention the video drivers I am trying to install are the Intel HD graphics drivers for my onboard graphics. This is because as soon as I do so and restart, Windows hangs on a black screen right after the "Starting Windows" screen and my laptop fan goes on full blast. The computer at this point is unresponsive, forcing me to do a hard power down. The only remedy after this is to either do a system restore to before the video drivers were installed, or boot into safe mode to uninstall the video drivers manually and run CCleaner. The laptop runs fine running on the default "standard VGA drivers" with the exception of poor resolution and unable to run anything graphics intensive. I've tried using drivers from both Dell and Intel's websites, via .exe installers and manually via .zip folders. I've attached my SF diagnostic .zip folder. Also forgot to mention I am running the most updated BIOS with default settings loaded. Please help and thank you in advance!

Hi,
I just got my Dell XPS 13 back from factory repair/service with all functions tested. I was running Windows 10 before, but the Dell repair service re-installed Windows 8.1 during the repair. So I installed Windows 10 (the free version from Microsoft for users of assistive technology) and everything went smoothly. But once I rebooted, the computer is stuck on the Dell logo and will not load the OS. I pressed F12 and ran the Diagnostics, and no error was found.
What can I do now ?
Thanks !!

Hello,
I have a dell studio 1555 that has worked very well for a long time, suddenly the laptop would not go past the dell logo, it takes along time for the bar beneath the logo to load. When it is fully loaded I am able to enter into bios, but it will not load the operating system (windows 10). What can I do to fix this?
Thanks

Answer:Dell laptop does not go past dell logo

Unplug the system, remove the battery and hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall the memory modules.  Try powering up on  AC only -- if it will, but won't with the battery installed, the battery is bad and will need replacement.
If it still won't power up, remove the hard drive.  If that allows it to power up to a BIOS screen (F2 at powerup), replace the hard drive with a new one and reload the OS.
If you still get nothing, the mainboard is bad;  in all honesty, on an eight year old system, start shopping for a new system - this one isn't worth a few hundred dollar repair.

Morning all - we're on our second XPS 13 (first was a (9343). This one is splendid, except for the above: if the computer is off, then it boots up fine, but if 'Restart' is selected from the Windows 10 'Power' option, then it freezes on the Dell logo (no spinning lights even).
Since I am in the process of trying to install everything and set up the laptop, restarts are frequent! I do not want to activate another Office licence (already lost one at £42) if this is problem cannot be solved - so I have about 10 days left.
All the drivers are up to date - BIOS is at the newest, v.1.00! - but the problem persists. Any ideas?
Cheers,
Chris

Answer:XPS 13 (9350): Freezes on 'Restart' (but not on cold boot)

So, still no help from Dell: same as last time...
I did try changing the boot order in BIOS (HD-/Win. Boot Man.) but it's made no difference. I can re-boot if I turn the laptop off and then on again, but it will not 'Restart' from the Windows 10 Start button/Power.
It does re-start back to Windows if I exit the BIOS screens though.
Fancy.
Cheers,
Chris

Hi all,

I have been facing this very strange problem these past four to five weeks. My machine refuses to boot up from cold. During the cold boot, the system reaches the stage where the text box appears for entering user password. Now the moment I type any character on the keyboard, the system freezes.

But when I press restart and reach the same stage of entering the password, it proceeds normally.

I have XPSP3, two physical hard disks, 2GB RAM, DG965RY motherboard, Intel PIV cpu.

Is this a known issue, or is it something that I have stumbled across for the first time?

Thanks for your guidance...

Answer:Windows XP SP3 Freezes On Cold Boot, But Works On Restart

The primary C drive may be causing this. When you get Windows up, go to My Computer, and right-click on the C drive. Select Properties, tools, check disk for errors. Set a disk check on restart. See if any errors are detected

Hi,

For some time now, my BIOS has stopped working. When i press delete to start the BIOS when i boot, it shows a static white line (no blinking). See this image: Imgur

However, if I do not try to get to the BIOS, the computer will boot and work fine, and has worked for over a year without problems.

I still feels it is a problem, and as I want to upgrade my Hard drive and OS soon, I'd like to fix this strange bug.

The bug first appeared after I installed two SSDs, wich worked fine at first, as i successfully configured the SSD, but while reinstalling windows it bugged at some point.

Things I tried:
Unplugging all HDD -> same problem
upgrading BIOS -> Cant since the update I got from MSI requires to go into the BIOS to update

System information:
MSI Dominator laptop
Driver page: Notebook - The best gaming notebook provider 64

Possible solutions:
Repair BIOS in some way? the functionality seems fine, I think only the displaying part has a problem.
Upgrading BIOS whithout actually going into the BIOS?

Thank you for your time, and if I didn't provide enough info please say so i'll try to fix it.

Answer:BIOS freezes on load, but computer boots fine

Quote:

Shut down and pull the power cord out of the Notebook/Laptop then remove the battery and wait a few minutes before trying again.
Remove the SSD and try to boot into the BIOS, see what happens. Worst thing would be a notice of no boot device.
Flashing the BIOS with the same or newer file will depend upon how it is done for your computer, whether it needs the software on a floppy disk, a CD, a USB Thumb/Flash drive or can be done from within Windows.

One way to reset the BIOS on a Desktop is to pull all the power, wait a minute then remove the CMOS battery, about the size of a quarter, put it all back and try again. A similar procedure can be used with a Notebook but much more difficult to get at it and requires some experience and patience.

Hey,

My PC fell about 3 feet one day when I was transporting it. Put it in a new case, RMA'd all the defective hard drives and video cards, made it look shiny as new... and other than one quirky issue it has been working great!

The PC will work perfectly from a cold boot. However, whenever I try to restart it without shutting down and manually booting it, it crawls through the post screen, and then freezes at the windows XP boot screen, and restarts (takes a good 15-20 minutes). Any ideas... really confusing me, not even sure where to start to look besides doing an OS re-install.

Answer:System freezes at post after restart... only starts with a cold bood

Has this been happening for a while now or it just started happening?

i selected to run offthe hard drive and it froze up any help?

hi, after you hit F12 did you see the diagnostics program at all? Ordinarily I would say It may be worthwhile running a scan on the hard drive if you can. But, I see you removed a virus, can you tell me if it was with the help of the antimalware section on this forum? or did you just remove it yourself? I need to know if you are absolutely sure you removed all traces of the virus - if you had the help of a forum they would have given you the "all clear". Have you tried starting in safe mode at all?

Thanks for writing to us.
Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.

Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.

Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... Answer:Dell Laptop, Display Turns to Static/System Freezes, Dell Can't Fix

The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.

Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.

Hi there, Problem desc:A year old G570, does not boots. It freezes on Windows Logo during booting. Efforts took to resolve:1. In the Recovery Console mode, run 'Sfc scannow' and 'chkdsk /r/f' commands and try to boot again. System will boot successfully. This eats up 3 hours of time. Issue occurs again after several successful boots. 2. Tried one key rescue and restored it to Initial set up. After several successful boots faced this issue again. 3. Changed BIOS setting to boot from external HDD each time. But this option is no longer availble in BIOS.(USB and CD-ROM both options are not availble to boot) Chkdsk runs with message - WINDOWS did not find any issues making me believe that Hard Disk is working in good Condition. Any help around this will be appreciated.

However, there was an update to build 10041 that failed multiple times trying to install, and eventually screwed itself up to the point where I had to do a fresh install. After doing a fresh install of 10041, I reinstalled all my programs and everything was wroking just fine in the first boot. However, after rebooting a couple of times, I'm noticing some problems. I can login and go to my desktop just fine and everything works perfectly for about 30seconds to 2 minutes, and then after that things go haywire. Start menu won't work, the cortana search goes blank, explorer hangs, chrome freezes, windows updates will pause, and my pc just becomes unusable and I have to manually reboot. After doing this many times and troublshooting (disabling startup programs/services, etc) Safe mode would open up saying it had an "unknown hard error" when I tried to boot into it. I had to reinstall again. This time, I'm running on build 10049 and it's doing exactly the same thing as before. Anybody have any suggestions? I'm about to just reinstall my windows 7 again.

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone would be so kind to assist with a problem that suddenly started with my second computer (Dell Vostro 400)
Its running windows 7 home premium and all the sudden it now stops at the Dell bios version screen. It did this a couple times the lastfew days, but when I restarted it, it booted ok, but when I checked on it later then the computer was frozen again with a black screen.  I have borrowed another computer from work and swapped out the hard drive, and it works fine with the other computer (same hardware). So I dont think its the hard drive. Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Answer:Dell Vostro 400 - freezes right away at Dell bios version screen

Oh, I should mention that I do hear one beep and then the Dell screen shows up and then freezes.

Finally received a T431s (win 8 pro) but it's beeping right out of the box. Seems to only beep from a warm reboot. Starting from cold (completely off) doesn't beep. Disabling the security chip seems to resovle the beeps, but then I can't use the fingerprint reader or bitlocker. Setting it to inactive seems to eventually turn it to active by itself (after a restart) resulting in beeps again. Tried clearing the TPM but results in the same beeps... Pretty annoyed that it's having issues right out of the box. Anyone else with a T431s having the same issue? Additionally, I can't seem to access the bios from a cold start no matter how fast I press the F1 key, or what keys I press. It refuses to get interrupted. The only way I can access the bios is allowing the system to come up, restart, and then interrupt boot.

Answer:T431s - 5 beeps, pause, 5 beeps on restart - boots fine - security chip

Call Tech support is DOA. You'll need to return for another one or whatever.

Hi everyone, I currently own a Dell 7520 15R SE with Dual graphics, I have taken the laptop apart, wiped thermal compound, then cleaned/prepared applied MX4, and now speedfan is displaying all ticks and down arrows  when gpu not is in use, when Photoshop is open then the gpu kicks in and starts displaying temps
The laptop powers 2 1080P screens via HDMI and VGA, it will remain silent, however sometimes the fan when applications are open however air being expelled is cool, if i unplug one screen the fan then goes off/ultra low speed.
Summary
CLEANED laptop, NEW thermal paste, runs silent/acceptable quite when 1 screen in use,
goes crazy on 2 screens when apps are open, despite low temps and cold air?
This laptops prevous issues were getting both GPUs to work once upgrading to win8 and 8.1, they are now solved, and bios etc is all latest

Appreciated.

Answer:Dell Fan speed problems (is COLD) please read

Maybe a little late to reply, but I'm facing the exact same problem with the same machine. I've had the laptop for more than two years before I first started using a second screen about a year ago and faced the above mentioned problem. As suggested by tech support, I cleaned the fan, reinstalled Windows a couple of times, did all kinds of diagnostics and checks, bios is the latest available (A11)... nothing to report. Today I fitted a new fan and heatsink, that didn't help either. Really frustrating.
Is there going to be any kind of reply from a Dell technician?

I have a dell inspiron 1526 running 32 bit Windows Vista. I've had it for about 2 years, and since about a month ago, when I power on, the lights and fans come on, but no display shows. I can even hear the hard drive spinning. This happens every time I try to cold boot.

So I shut it off, then turn it on again. I go through this process about 20-40 times, and my computer suddenly turns on and runs normally. It behaves the same with or without the battery in. It will also randomly crash and just power off. No reboot or blue screens. And occasionally, my date and time settings will be off when I finally get the computer running.

The only conclusion I have came to is that it could be a failing component, just not sure which one it is. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 1526 no display from cold boot

try hooking an up an external display to see if you still get video. the fact that the date and time are off could indicate that the system battery is failing. however, if the board is not working properly the battery is pointless to replace.

I had to replace the motherboard on this laptop and it all worked fine with Windows 7 home prem. The only issue was not saving the date and time on cold boot. When I put it in sleep it does fine on wakeup. I tore it down again since the cmos battery is very inaccessable. The battery checked fine(3.2v) The only error I get on boot is: "RTC is fixed- time and date may be wrong"
What am I missing? Thanks

Answer:Dell xps M1530 won't save date & time on cold boot

You might just need to replace the CMOS battery to fix that problem.

This is not a typical BSOD crash. My Dell Inspiron's monitor intermittently doesn't wake up once power management shuts it off. The problem is monitor doesn't fully shut off. One way to know the monitor won't wake up is when the CPU is griding away, fan is on full blast, laptop heated up, monitor still has a faint white brightness but no disk activity. I have tried connecting the laptop HDMI and VGA output different monitors and TVs but the monitor/ TV doesn't recognize any input signal during this phase. Yesterday, CPU suddenly started griding away without a pause while I was working and the base plastic was so hot I couldn't place it on my lap anymore. System Idle was 95-99%; I wanted to check whether laptop will not wakeup after power management kicks and this morning I couldn't wake up the laptop and had to cold boot it

I cannot put my laptop to sleep or hibernate when this occurs, the computer will just keep griding away with fan at full blast but will never hibernate or sleep.

I've run chkdsk, defrag etc but no issues were reported. I have checked for viruses etc, nothing obvious. Any help on what I can do next and how to investigate this further would help.

Thanks in advance

I have recently noticed that Windows 7 will freeze during startup, specifically while the Windows Logo is midway from forming. After this occurs, I will usually just have to turn my computer off and then on again. When I do this, Windows will boot up normally with no errors. If I wait, the computer will automatically continue booting up after roughly 20 seconds have passed.

Originally, I suspected this may have been a driver issue with Wacom as I received an error from one of the drivers however after removing them completely the problem persisted. I also attempted to restore Windows to a time when it was function properly using Restore Points with no effect.

I have recently flashed (updated) my BIOS and installed a 2nd Nvidia GTX 680 in SLI mode. I have also recently updated my Nvidia Drivers.

What could be causing this problem?

Edit: here is where it freezes. Sorry about the quality!

Answer:Windows 7 freezes at Windows Logo on Startup and then boots up complet

Does anybody have an idea? The problem goes away if I remove all of my peripheral devices and only two or more devices causes the problem. I tried disabling Legacy USB Support in the BIOS and that also seems to solve the problem. However, this causes my screen to go black with a blinking white cursor for several minutes.

What is wrong?!?! Yesterday this was all working fine!

Hey,
I got my new XPS 13 this week (moving from macbook pro) and it seems I can't work out the monitor resolution.
I'm running windows 10 on XPS 13 (i7 2.9, 16 gig ram, Intel HD Graphics 620To it I connected DA200 and via HDMI cable  u2913wm.I can't manage to get higher resolution than 1920x1080!Never had this issue on my macbook (same HDMI) and the graphic card is displaying on the laptop itself resolution of 3200 x 1800 so, surly, its strong enough.
Updated the graphic card drivers, monitor drivers, reinstalled DDM and googled everything i could think of, eventually, ended up here.
I made sure to buy only DELL's solutions and I was promised I won't have an issue but, well, this is why you never listen to sales people.

I've recently just cleaned installed my Dell Inspiron 1564.. I lost all these OEM infos on my System Properties. And I'm planning to bring them back.. The bad thing is I haven't back-up those info as I have just recently learned about them(just now)..

Could someone please upload the OEM logo and INI for those who has Dell (new laptops) and haven't removed those info yet. Thanks..

Answer:[Request] Dell OEM Logo and INI

Question: DELL logo stuck

My  friend got a  Dell inspiron 15 3000 series with windows 8.1  .It ran fine for 2 years. But  now  its not working.
The system show dell logo on starting and does not got past it  . its just stuck.
BIOS setting( UEFI) can be accessed using F2,   boot priority  setting key F12 do not work.
Even DELL dell epsa pre-boot system assessment test  works fine.
In some cases the problems disappears and the system works . But after restarting , it will get stuck with dell logo.

Answer:DELL logo stuck

General troubleshooting:
Unplug the system and remove or disconnect the battery.  Hold the power button for 30 sec.  Remove and reinstall both memory modules.
Try powering on with AC only - if it will, but won't if the battery is connected, the battery needs to be replaced.
If it still won't power up successfully after resetting the system as above, remove the hard drive. If you can then get into setup (F2 at powerup) successfully, replace the drive.
If you still can't get into the system after doing the above, try one memory module at a time until you find the bad module (replace it) or bad socket (see below).
If one of the memory sockets turns out to be the problem -- or the above yields no results, replace the mainboard.

I have Dell XPS 8700 desktop.   Pressing the power button starts the computer and the fan spins and then about 5 seconds the computer shuts off and then tries to start again only to shut down a few seconds later.  There are no beeping sounds and the computer will not get as far as the Dell logo.
I have had my Dell since September 1st 2015 and have not had any booting problems.
However, prior to this reboot situation; I switched out a SK Hynix 2Gb ram stick and a Samsung 4Gb ram stick with a Crucial 8Gb ram stick. I have four ram slots.
In the process of changing the memory sticks, the computer would give 4 beeps when I used any memory stick in one of the memory slots.  The 2Gb, 4Gb and 8Gb would all cause the computer to give 4 beeps when I used them in one of the four memory slots.
So now I just use 3 of the 4 memory slots and therefore doing so eliminates any beeping from my Dell desktop.
But now I can't get my desktop to boot even so far as the Dell logo.  I don't have any peripherals connected to my desktop just the monitor, the keyboard and the mouse.
Is there any way to get my Dell to boot up to the logo?
Thanks for your help.

I took the battery out, pressed the Power button for 10 secs, placed the battery back on, but again nothing happened. If someone could tell me how to fix this...

Hello Everyone!

Dell Dimension XPS D300.
On bootup, the memory count-down screen says:
Pentium 2
Processor speed 133MHz
Then it boots straight into BIOS, directly into a window Maintenance where it says: Processor Speed, and the option to set to: 200, 233, 266, 300, 333, 366.
I tried all and it does the same loop.

will someone suggest what I should do here?

Thanks!

In my office we have two Dell computers. The one that my bookkeeper uses began having a problem this morning. When the computer is turned-on, it goes through the normal boot process until the desk top is shown, and then simple shuts its self off. It is not rebooting, it is completely turned off.

I have disconected the DSL line and it does it. It booted in SAFE mode and it does it. The fan is running and blowing air out of the back. The computer starts very normally, until it shuts off. I has run long enough for me to shut down and restart, but once it has restarted it shuts itself off.

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Answer:My Pc doesnt boot after Dell Logo

Hi KIDKOOL,
What is the exact system model? What is the current OS installed on the system? When did the issue start? Are you able to boot to f2 or f12 on startup?
Is the HDD detected in BIOS? Press f2 on startup to enter BIOS.
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional. Also, run an extended / thorough tests on the HDD and memory to check for any possible errors.
If the HDD is not detected, replace the HDD. If the HDD is detected and no errors on the diags, then try recovery methods using the OS media
https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/12415/windows-10-recovery-options
http://bit.ly/1URPNUE
http://bit.ly/23cHvvp
If nothing works, then considering reinstalling the OS.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name and Email) for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.
