An operating system wasnít found after Windows 10 upgrade attempt

Question: An operating system wasnít found after Windows 10 upgrade attempt

I have a Dell e6510 that was running Windows 7 Pro. I received the windows 10 upgrade after reserving a copy a few weeks back. Before the updated I made sure my windows update was up to date. I kicked off the upgrade to Windows 10 and left for work. (I figured everything would be updated by the time I got home). When I got home I checked my laptop and saw the error, "An operating system wasn?t found. Try disconnecting any drives that don?t contain an operating system, Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart". I shut down the computer for about 15 minutes and turned it back on. Still received the same error. I only have one drive in the laptop so I had nothing to disconnect. I inserted my Windows 7 Pro Disk in the drive and did a LEGACY BOOT from the CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive.
The Windows 7 Menu came up and I hit next and was given to options

Install NowRepair your computer.
I selected repair your computer. System recovery options appeared and I selected restore your computer. Then I received an error saying ?To use system restore, you must select which windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select and operating system, and then select system restore.
I closed the window and let the computer restart. Received the error "An operating system wasn?t found. Try disconnecting any drives that don?t contain an operating system, Press Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart"
Since I have another laptop running Windows 10, I created a USB Boot Disk and inserted it in the computer. Restarted and let the computer boot into Windows 10 menu. I had two choices

Install nowRepair your computer
I did option 2 and had two menu options

TroubleshootTurn off your PC
I choose option 1 and then advanced options, then Startup Repair. Received the error ?Startup Repair couldn?t repair your PC Press ?Advanced Options? to try other options to repair your PC or ?Shut down? to turn off your PC. To make a long story short I?ve tried every option and NOTHING WORKs. My Dell E6510 is now a paper weight and it was my PRIMARY computer.!!! HELP ME!!!!!

I did try the command prompt and it went to X:/Sources>. I typed DISKPART and then list volume and I could see this
Volume #### Ltr Label FS Type Size Status
Volume 1 E FAT Partition 39MG Healthy
Volume 2 C Recovery NTFS Partition 14GB Healthy
Volume 3 F OS NTFS Partition 451GB Healthy
Is there any way to recover my data and get an operating system working again? My computer was working fine before the upgrade attempt.

Preferred Solution: An operating system wasnít found after Windows 10 upgrade attempt

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If you have any files on the drive you wish to keep I would boot from a lynux based live cd and have a look to see if they are recoverable. Then clean install your windows 7 deleting all partitions in the process.

Hi guys,

I have recently upgrade to Win 10 from windows 7 and it was running fine until it started booting with the analyzing and repairing windows screen. I had tried to get out of it by windows repair and by system restore but there were no points to restore too. I ended up trying the windows reset which failed when I selected to leave my files so then I tried the reset including removing my files. It failed part way through saying it could not complete the action and now when I boot up every time I get "An operating system wasn't found" etc. I do not have a windows CD or know my windows registration number. PLEASE help anyone!

Answer:An operating system wasn't found after resetting windows failed

If upgrade was successfully done and Windows 10 was sucessfully activated on your PC. Then you can clean install Windows 10 on the same device, via creating Bootable USB drive of Windows10 image (.iso).

So, here I am watching videos on YouTube, while extracting a 2GB video game update file using winRAR, then all of a sudden I go from having 13GB free to 1.2MB free on my main and only hard drive. I thought this was just an error that would be easily fixed by restarting the laptop but I was wrong. When the HP laptop booted back up, it came up with the message, "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".
Which I've done many times already. I don't understand though, was there a virus in the compressed folders? If so then why didn't my antivirus software detect it sooner? I'm using Symantec Endpoint Protection with premium membership, and as far as I know the software is pretty reliable, and I don't think it was YouTube.
All I want to know is, what caused this? And how do I fix it? Has all my data been deleted now? Need an answer please and thanks in advanced. There are more errors to name, but this info should be enough unless asked.

Answer:An Operating System wasn't found.

Sounds as though you have run out of disk space. Although the compressed file may have been 2GB when decompressed it may have exceeded the 13GB previously available.
Can you boot in safe mode or from an external recovery drive and delete the game until you find lots more free space.

So I was having trouble with my laptop (slow boot and restart etc) and decided to do a reset. I come back and see it's finished removing everything but it also says it couldn't remove some files (not sure which). I restart my laptop and come across a screen saying "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain and operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." I haven't been able to access anything now (apart from the boot settings and setup). I plugged in a hard drive with Windows 10 on it but that had no effect either. My laptop is an Alienware 14 with Windows 10 installed. (Upgraded from Windows 8)
Any help?

Answer:An operating system wasn't found?

Hi, I would suggest you get this bootable DVD/flash drive:
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - - Windows 10 Forums

That will give you a familiar Windows environment to work in.

Boot your PC from it; download CrystalDiskinfo (free, portable) and run that to check your disk.

Note: viewed from that, your Windows disk/partition may have a different drive letter.

Your initial problems and current ones might be explained by that sort of problem - or could be sthg else. Best check first.

Do you have full backups of your data?

You are also likely to need a bootable Win 10 disk medium, build 1607. It could be a good opportunity to do a clean install if your disk checks out.

Answer:Operating system wasn't found

JoelStalker Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about no OS found and wanted to help. These problems are generally due to one of two basic problems:1) Failed hard drive2) Corrupted/missing boot loader files Since you have confirmed your drive is OK, then fixing the boot loader files should be enough to get the PC booting properly again. You will need access to a working PC for this step in order to create the media needed to repair your PC boot loader.Once you have that, please download and create Win10 install media from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10Note that when you go do download and build install media, the tool defaults to matching what is already installed on your PC (as in, Home for Home, 64-bit for 64-bit).  While you CAN change these settings, do NOT. If you do, the resulting media will be different and will force you to enter a NEW product code!Boot from the media you created, and follow the directions in this link: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanced-startup-options-boot-windows-10-a.htmlYou will need to go to the Advanced Options screen and click on Startup Repair.  You will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems. When done, your PC should boot OK. IMPORTANT CAVEAT ... The link I provided is for the English version of Win10, and I don't know if you can download the Chinese... Read more

hi mehtamohit,

Can you try to:
1. turn the computeroff, unplug the AC adapter and take out the battery.
2. hold down the power button for 20secs (power drain).
3. reconnect the AC adapter, turn the computer ON and try to acces the BIOS using Fn+F2
4. If same problem, try to insert your bootable Windows 8 installation USB, restart the PC and tap Fn+F12
5. on the boot menu, choose the USB to boot from the Windows 8 installation disk
6. on the Windows 8 screen, press shift+F10 to open a command prompt and type:
    a. diskpart
    b. list disk (this will show if the HDD is getting detected or not)
       - if the HDD is not detected, you may need to contact lenovo for service
       - if the HDD is detected, type sel disk 0
    c clean
    d.exit
       - after exiting diskpart, try to re-install Windows 8 and observe

Hi there! I have a Samsung RV515, which I had running Windows 8, and I decided to go back to Windows 7. When I boot up my machine I get the following error;

"An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system."

I've read various posts of other people with the same issue, and I'm actually quite savvy with computers myself - but this has me baffled.

In my BIOS, I have my priorities set to;
1~ USB HDD (which is a 250GB HDD from an old laptop, with W7 on it)
2~ SATA DVD Drive (which currently has a Windows 7 Installation Disk inside)
3 ~ SATA 500Gb HDD (the one on the inside of the laptop)

I've tried Manual Boot Override, both on the USB HDD & the DVD Drive, but I just get sent back to the error. No matter what I seem to do, I cannot get to the repair screen which numerous other posts have claimed I should if following the steps set out for me.

I'm confused as hell, and I've got some really urgent work to get done that I can't do (I'm an amateur Games Composer working on a project at the moment) so I'm desperate to get my machine working again.

Hey guys, I had the this problem,so i thought i'd give the solution that woked for me. I tried resetting my laptop initially but it got stuck after putting it off and on manually, it displayed "an operating system not found, disconnect all drives that do not contain an operating system. press cntrl + alt + del to restart".so my thinking was that something was wrong with the os since the system wasn't recognizing it. I use an acer aspire E-5 571, so I tried the acer erecovery management by pressing alt F10 as soon as the laptop starts to load but nothing happened. My laptop had previously been running on the legacy boot mode, so using F2 as soon as the laptop boots I changed the boot mode to UEFI and tried the erecovery  management this time it just got stuck, on the very first screen. Then I put an operating system disc image (iso file) into a flash drive, changed the boot priority order, allowing the drive into the first spot on the list, then rebooted in UEFI mode. It loaded a windows mini-window having install now and repair your computer. Now I had watched a lot of youtube videos based on the problem, used the command prompt so do a lot of things, make partitions active, assign, nothing worked!! And when I try installing, it doesn't work in normal install, saying I should do so when windows has loaded (I can't even get my laptop to boot up!!) in advanced mode, it says windows can't be installed on any of this partitions. I couldn't ... Read more

I have a Dell XPS 420 and I've just bought an SSD for it. Every time I boot the machine I see "Operating system wasn't found" now, despite having booted into Windows successfully just before.

The only change I made was connecting a standard SATA 2TB drive - which it boots into fine - but now when I have removed the 2TB drive I cannot boot onto the SSD.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Answer:"Operating system wasn't found" DELL XPS 420

Hi there

a) Is the machine UEFI or not
b) how did you copy the OS on to the SSD.
c) How are the disks formatted - MBR or GPT.
d) (Should really be at the top so question -z !!) what OS are you using.

Usually with these computers there's a BOOT menu you can get to from the BIOS - you don't need to go into the full BIOS - there's often something like ALT + F9 to get into a boot menu. Here there's often more disks than you will see in the BIOS settings -- you'll see things like UEFI file.

As a starter try and insert a windows install / recovery disk -boot from that and choose REPAIR windows. If you don't have a dvd device there's plenty of ways of writing the install / recovery system to a USB.

We need more info before proceeding here.

Cheers

Helping a friend on his Acer Aspire V5 laptop that was running an OEM Windows 8 to upgrade to 8.1.

After selecting the Upgrade to Windows 8.1 via the store, the system went through it's install procedure, however after it does an auto reboot, it gives you a blank screen with the message No Operating System found, in the upper left corner.

But, you can turn the machine off and back on, and it will boot just fine. However if you select restart it does the same thing "no operating system found", on restart and again you must power down and power back on.

I have searched for fixes, but all seem to point to some sort of re-install process. I am not to crazy about the idea of re-installing to factory settings or doing a repair back to Windows 8 and attempting to upgrade again, are their any known shorter fixes for this?

And if I do go back to Windows 8, and try to upgrade again, what is to say it won't happen again?

Answer:No Operating System found after Windows 8.1 upgrade

Answer:Operating wasn't found.

Hello @bigSPOON420 Welcome to the HP Support forum. Thank you for posting! Since the BIOS/UEFI hardware diagnostics passed, your issue is related to the fact Windows/BIOS cannot find a bootable device to load an operating system from. This can be caused because:- BIOS settings are incorrect- your Windows OS is corrupted I suggest you enter the BIOS and load default settings/reset the BIOS to factory default condition.Restart the PC and if this does not help, you will need to reinstall the operating system (or perform HP Recovery). Do you use Windows 7 as mentioned above initially ? Do you know how to perform HP Recovery F11  option ?

Hi all, completely new to this forum, registered purely because of the problem in the title.
I'm an every day home user and not that experienced with advanced IT stuff although I do know more than your average home user.
Now, to the problem.
I was using my Sony vaio laptop (CW series bought in November 2009) as usual about 4 hours ago, when the HDD appeared to make a strange beep/clicking sound, and my computer completely froze up. In a state of slight panic, I held down the power button and forced my computer to shut down.
Upon restarting, the vaio logo appeared, the screen went blank and the message 'operating system not found' was displayed.
I turned the laptop off via the power button again, left it for a minute and then switched it back on. I had the same result.
After searching the net on the family computer I discovered that checking the the BIOS may be the the next logical step. What I have gathered from the vaio's BIOS is that my HDD is listed as having '0GB' memory. I do have recovery DVDs that I created when I first got the vaio.

PROBLEM SOLVED bios was configuring hard drives as IDE instead of RAID.
So yesterday my computer worked, I turned it off last night and let it install updates (12 of them to be exact). This morning, lo and behold when I turned it on it posted and then said something along the lines of "no operating system found." It also won't give me the option of pressing ctrl +i to configure RAID, it just jumps straight to the no os found message. I managed to get it to boot from the windows 7 disc, but it can't seem to find my installation of windows 7. When I go into bios setup it still detects all 3 of my hard drives so I don't think that one of those died. Is it possible that one of those stupid updates killed windows?

Right now i've got it running startup repair, but it never actually found my install of windows, so I don't know what it's going to accomplish.

Here's hoping that we can get this resolved.

Edit: It actually says "Missing operating system."
Also, i'm not sure that it is actually posting. First screen is an ASUS p5q pro screen that says press del for setup. Then I get a black screen that says initializing, which then states that No Hard disc was detected or found or something, jumps back to the Asus screen, and then back to a black screen that says Missing operating system.

Answer:Windows 7 No Operating System Found

You may be able to use BootRec to fix things. I rebuilt the BCD and MBR when I had a "no OS found" and even though ScanOs found nothing, the computer booted after that. Very weird, but hey it worked so I'll take it.

Iím running windows 7 on a Sony Vaio VGN FZ140e.. For the past few weeks Iíve heard beeps from my computer and it crashed (blue screen) once.. these did not happen often so I figured they werenít much on an issue... Today when I turned it on I got a message "Operating System Not Found". It will not boot.. Iíve tried inserting the windows 7 disc to try the repair option but when I boot from disk it says "loading windows files" at the bottom and goes straight to the starting windows screen where it freezes rather than to a point where I have an option to install or repair. I have tried going into the BIOS and moving boot from disc up and then back to defaults.. Iím not sure if my hard drive went bad or if something else is keeping my laptop from booting because it appears from the BIOS that the computer does recognize that a hard drive is connected (says memory 200GB or whatever). Can anyone point me in the right direction please? Should I order a new hard drive and start over or are there still other options to rescue my files?

Everything has no problem before. But when my pc was booted up next time, it had a message "operating system not found". This is a IBM PC with Windows Millennium Edition.

When I boot-up with boot disk in A: It appear that --->

There are several possible causes.

1. The drive may need to be partitioned. To create a partition on the drive run fdisk from the MS Dos prompt.

2. You may be using third party disk partition...

3. Some viruses also cause your drive C to not register. You can use a virus scanning program to check your computer for viruses.

In the CMOS setup, no hard drive can detect (Since I use the auto-dectect function), only CDrom & floppy drive can be detect!

When I try to use fdisk, "no fix drive are found!!"

What I can do?

Answer:windows XP operating system cannot be found

Possible reasons to check out:1. BIOS not detecting hard drive - Go into your BIOS (F2/ Del /Esc key at boot will normally get you into your BIOS) to see if hard drive is being detected or not. Is your BIOS detecting the hard drive?2. Your hard disk has been damaged - If your BIOS is NOT detecting the hard drive than this is a likely possibility3. The MBR has been possibly corrupted - If your BIOS is detecting the hard drive then you can use your CD to boot into Recovery and try to repair / fix the MBR.___________________________________________? My after rebooting Im getting "Operating system Not found"
Now I'm afraid that both my HDD and laptop hard drive are corrupted.

Do you have Windows 7 install CD or System repair CD in hand ?. If yes, boot from it and run the automatic startup repair.

If you don't have an install disc, create a System Repair CD from a friend's machine and use that.

Well windows 7 was working sweet last night.
Today I opened a folder with some videos in it, left the room but when I came back in all I saw on my laptop was a black screen which read something like "No operating system detected" .
I restarted and had the same problem , so I put in a usb stick with windows 7 and started the setup.
Setup could not detect my hard drive :/ and now when I boot up it just gets stuck on the "Fujitsu Siemens loading screen" ......
Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks

Alright, so this problem is a little complicated.

My computer fell a couple days ago, and I had to get a new hard drive. Unfortunately, my mother let my uncle who is NOT a professional install a "new" hard drive, which was actually his old one and came with Linux and not Windows.
It worked fine but I wanted Windows, so he did something and installed Windows 7 from a flash drive. And it was great.
Until this afternoon, when I accidentally changed the BIOS order and now I'm getting an "operating system not found" message... Is there something wrong with the hard drive (again, it isn't new) or did I just completely mess something up?

Hello! I've been running Windows Vista Home Premium on my 6 month old LG (no laughing please) laptop. Everything has been working OK, until this morning...

While playing WoW, my computer stopped responding. Nothing would work to "wake it up" so I was forced to do a hard boot. When the computer started up again, I got the error screen "Operating System not found".

I've been searching online and found nothing that helps - every solution I could find told me to download new drivers, but how do you do that without being able to startup your computer???

Please Help!

Hi guys,I'm worried. I have a computer that's been lying on its side doing nothing for a few months. I had used it on and off to access a few files I needed over the last couple of weeks.I plugged it in and went to use it again this morning, but it won't start up and run Windows 2000.I pressed F12 to troubleshoot and it said "Operating System Not Found". The hard disk is a Maxtor 120GB that I bought in 2005. I can't understand what has caused this fault.

I have a Sony Viao with Windows Vista OS or at least up until 2 days ago it had this OS. I used my laptop Saturday afternoon to do homework online and tried to use it again on Monday only to get "Operating System Not Found" message when I turn the laptop on.

I reset the BIOS to have it boot to the hard disk thinking that was the problem, no luck and everytime I turn it on it makes a clicking noise that it didn't make before. I've tried pressing F8, F11, F12 and ESC to get it to go to safe mode but no luck.

I do not have a recovery disc and I can not remember if I ever received one with the computer. Any suggestions as to what has happened and how I can fix this? I am desperate right about now.

Answer:Help please!!! Operating System Not Found - Windows Vista

It is sounding like your hard drive has failed ( due to the clicking sound you are hearing). You can try getting in touch with the manufacturer and requesting an installation disc. Replacing the hard drive should not be too difficult for you. You could check locally with some computer shops to see if they have any of the size that you had. Used ones can be relatively cheap. I had to do that to one of ours, the first hard drive didn't work, but the second on did and it is still chugging along.

I have a Toshiba Satellite S70-A running Windows 8.1 that's been working fine for two years. Recently, I've noticed that it's been running too slowly to use and there is some spyware that I couldn't remove, so I decided to reset my laptop. I backed up my files and used the 'Reset my PC' option inside the control panel. My laptop seemed to get stuck at 77% for nearly three hours, I called Windows Technical Support and they told me to try restarting it.

Well, after the restart, the operating system couldn't be located. I tried the reset option in the Boot Menu, I tried reinstalling Windows 8.1 via a USB drive and a CD, but neither would work. I've received errors stating that the drive housing Windows is locked and that I need to unlock it to continue, and that the drive housing Windows could not be located.

I would love to know how to 1) recover, or 2) reinstall Windows 8.1.

Thanks.

Answer:No Operating System Found and Can't Reinstall Windows

Have you tried booting to Safe Mode?  Normally you press F8 a few times after powering on to get to it.  In my case if that didn't work, I'd restore from my latest full system backup.  If you didn't make one, now you see why you should.  If neither of these solve your problem, you'll probably need to format that hard drive.  I believe there's an option to do that when you boot the Windows 8 install DVD.  If you do that, be sure to get all the drivers you'll need from the Toshiba web site.

 Good luck.

Hi Guys,
I know this is a topic that has received quite alot of attention but so far i have tried loads of so called fixes and my problem seems to be unique.
I got the blue screen of death last night with the error message 'KERNAL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR.
I also got this tech info *** STOP: 0x0000007A (0xFFFFF6FB7DA00018, 0XFFFFFFFFC0000056, I can elaborate on this later if required.
Had blue screen a few times so didnt think anything of it, then today mid way through watching a download on vlc, my PC restarted and gave me 'operating system not found. I restarted and it said the same thing.
My CD rom tray is broken and so to get into it i (or my gf lol) have to take my laptop apart and place the disk in then rebuild, anyway i put my recovery disk in and it wont find my HDD therefore cannot even do a fresh install coz windows has no where to put it.
Tried Dos'ing it, my laptop in dos is giving OMB, which is either a strange name for a hard drive or i have 0 MB :/ cant do anything with it, samsung recovery solution wont start(F4), tried resetting all dos settings, advanced settings(F8) etc but no joy.
Is there anyway to fix this or do i need to look into a new hard drive? Any help will be much appreciated!!!

I have a sony vaio vgn-nr385e that cam preinstalled with windows vista home premium on it. An update cause the computer to crash, and it was time for a clean up anyway. So i used the built in hard drive recovery and restored the system but it kept giving me an error 1031 so i formatted the entire hard drive, merged the partitions, because at a later time, i was intending on making my own recovery partition, and once i did that, i reinstalled windows vista, got the desktop, installed the graphics driver, and when i restarted, it said something about installing 1 update and then it restarted and it said configuring update and then back to the desktop. I was thinking all was going smooth up until I removed the vista cd from the computer, restarted it again, and whooaa, wait a minute, NO operating system found! What's going on here guys?? Please help. I have checked the default boot settings as best i could and all seemed to be ok, and i do also know that If i have the cd in the drive, windows vista that is, then it boots just fine. Hi,

I have the above computer which I purchased in 2011,following a recommended Windows 7 update a couple of months ago, the laptop locked. I powered off the laptop and could not viewmy main hard disc’s(C or D) when the computer rebooted, however I had access tomy external drives

A local so called Microsoft specialist(rogue) visited meon my instruction with the intention of recovering my data from both these drives, which he didto an external drive which I supplied him. He removed my hard disc from my machine in order to do this

Today, I have reinserted the hard disc into my computer, however I am getting the above message “Operating system not found”

I have selected both Boot-up options:-

? F2 – Setup, there appears to be no option to Boot from an external drive in the setup

? F4 – Recovery, I cannot enter the Windows menuto perform this task, laptop appears to hang

Any ideas would be welcome or am I just wasting my time withthis laptop(hard disc) which despite this problem appears physically in verygood condition as it has been well looked after

I confirm my laptop was protected by the latest version of Norton and Malwarebytes at the time of my problem

This my first post on this forum, I trust it is in the correct location and your advice would be most appreciated

Many thanks

Your HDD is inside, why are you looking for an external one? (or I understood you wrong)
F2 and set boot order to HDD (might show as it's name). Save and exit.

If this doesn't work boot with a Windows Repair Disk and see if your OS is recognized.

Hi guys, thanks for looking.

I've been attempting to install windows on an advent 9515 with a new hard drive however all of the usb boot disks I create return "Operating system not found" I've tested them at boot in other computers and they work fine there. I have tried with windows 7 and 8, I have succeeded with installing ubuntu onto the machine (so the machine at least works).

I have tried other hard drives with windows already installed on them with the same effect, I would have expected it to at least try and load then error out after that. What is going on here?

I must have been infected with a virus. It happened during the day when I was at work and my computer was on standby. I came home and found the Operating System Not Found error on my black screen. I downloaded the Wondershare Liveboot and ran that and it froze. My son stopped it because he downloaded the Windows 7 Operating System installation program on a USB drive and tried to load that to reload Windows 7. Now all I can get is a black screen telling me my File: \Boot\BCD file is missing.

I have a Dell Inspirion Laptop with 8 GB memory, 250 GB hard drive. 64 bit operating system.

Where do I find the File: \Boot\BCD to reload on my computer. I can't access the partition, the recovery program, nothing.

Can someone please help me?!

Desperate. I've had this computer only six months, and yes I had a full Virus Scan program on my computer.

Answer:Windows 7 Virus - File \Boot\BCD Missing, Operating System Not Found

If you have only had the system for 6 months then call dell and tell them the error you get. They are very good at supporting current customers that are under their warranty. It sort of sounds like you had the computer turned off during an update in progress. My son did the same thing to the PC I built for him and we ended up replacing the drive to fix it. That is not to say that your drive is bad but mine is a real nice paper weight on a windy day.

I have a dell studio 15 laptop Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it. I got this laptop in November 2008, since then it was working fine just when I returned from Germany o india its not working. initially i thought disk got damaged due to x-ray scanning on airports but I read several threads on internet which says it does not erases/damages hard disks same I have also experienced during my several visits in which same laptop has gone through with this scanning process.

I tried to recover my OS by using OS DVD provided with the laptop. I booted my laptop by setting up the bootable device as DVD in BIOS but it does not help me to recover. I tried to install Windows XP also in C derive so that I can see the data(i.e. my all useful and important) present in D derive but its is not allowing me to install windows XP too on it.

While searching information, I came to know that it seems like its a issue of Windows Vista Home Premium and several people have faced the same . In one solution, it is mentioned that OS DVD provided with laptop may not have files to boot and recover so i downloaded a bootable files and tried with that too but that also does not work for me but it has worked for others as per reviews mentioned.

When I reboot my laptop from OS DVD priovided from the dell, I used to get an following errors:

Hello, I'm looking for some advice please as my computer is broke and I'm stuck without it.
Last weekend it just stopped working, I used it in the morning with no problems then in the afternoon I turned it on and it wouldn't start up, long story short is I ended calling Dell and they have told me that my computer has automatically upgraded to Windows 10 but my Dell XPS 7100 isn't compatible with it, now I have no operating system at all!
I paid them £119 for a years support and another £30 for a Windows 7 ultimate disc which they say I'll receive tomorrow (Friday)
I use my computer for work as I'm self employed and need to prepare quotes and invoices etc for my customers, I've been all week without it now and am fuming that this has happened, I didn't even want Windows 10, why would it upgrade automatically? It's cost me a lot of time and has now cost me money and I don't even know if all my files will be there when it's working again.
Just thought to vent on here and see if anyone has any advice, I'm also not happy that I've had to pay for Windows 7 ultimate again as I already bought it once with my computer but it seems it was preloaded so I didn't get a disc which I now need to reinstall, Dell support said they will assist with the reinstall and then block Windows 10 from trying to do this again! Great now I feel under attack from the Windows 10 upgrade :-/

Answer:Windows 10 upgrade has deleted my operating system

Run your W7 disc and you will probably loose everything on your computer. I would wait and see what information that you get on here first.
In the meantime does your computer try to start or is it just dead.

Currently my operating system isVista Service Pack 2 32 bit. How can Upgrade to Windows 8 or 10

I'm new here so pardon if there is any mistakes.

Anyhow I am currently using windows 7 (not a fan of windows 8). Since windows 10 is released I wanted to install and try it.
Initially I installed windows 8.1 in my D:\ drive (works normally as far as I can tell), and upgrade it to windows 10. I am keeping my windows 7 in drive C: as I do not have any other working computer if the installation failed.

So halfway upgrading from windows 8.1 to windows 10, the upgrade failed and a restart is needed. When restarting I tried to reset the installation but even that is failed. When restarted again there is no operating system in that drive (drive D: ) ??

Currently I tried to reformat my drive D: (windows 10) with my current windows 7 (installed in drive C) but it says the volume is in use by another process but it refused.
Summary
Drive C: - windows 7, still functioning properly
Drive D - where windows 8.1 is located and upgraded to windows 10 but failed, currently cannot detect any os when i boot from drive D: , and cant format the drive.

I know its really stupid and complicated the way i installed my windows 8.1 with my windows 7 intact, but I'm worried if the installation failed, I have no backup computer to fall back. Is there any suggestions that I can do?

Answer:Windows 10 crashed during Upgrade. Unable to detect operating system.

Try booting Windows 7 to Safe Mode (F8) then see if you can format D: from there. Do a quick format, full format is not needed.

My computer (IBM PC Pen. 3, 256 RAM, dual 450 MHz) all of a sudden has been giving me the error message "No operating system found" when I boot up. I tried:

rewriting the master boot record with fdisk using a boot floppy
reformatting the hard drive
re-installing Windows 2000 (it gets through the floppy part and then when it tries to re-boot: same message).
buying a new hard drive
updating the BIOS

Now I'm stuck. Is there a motherboard component to the boot process of finding the operating system?

I have a compaq presario f700 series running vista home premium. Recently, my wife has been having problems where the screen gets a aqua tint or she gets a white screen with diagonal black lines. She has also been having problems with booting up. It would take rebooting it about 4-5 times in order to boot to where she could use the laptop. Per the HP website I updated the BIOS on the laptop to version F.08.

Here is the problem as of today. She can't boot up at all now. It pops up the "compaq" screen and gives the options to enter the bios utility. But other than that it says "err2err3." When I press enter it keeps that osd on the screen and says "operating system not found." I have change the boot order to boot skip the cdrom and boot from hard drive. I have also ran the check disk diagnostic test in the BIOS utility. Everything passed. I don't see anything about ide or sata in the bios screens. I even downloaded a recovery disk from neosmart and tried booting from the disk like they suggested. I always get that err2err3 message. Of course, my wife has photos she wants to keep on here. Any suggestions?

I have also checked to make sure the hard drive connections are good as well. Thanks.

My computer will not seem to restart. I thought maybe it was a hard drive problem so I purchased a new one. It still will not reboot. Here's what happened. One day I woke up and my computer says this when trying to reboot it...yadda yadda yaddaPXE-E61: Media Test failure, check cablePXE-M0F: Exiting broadcom PXE ROM.Operating system not foundThat's the jist of it. Now I've had many problems before with this computer's hard drive so I figured it was just time to get a new one. I got it, installed it into the laptop, go to boot from my XP cd, and it still does this. It acts like it's not even trying to boot from the XP cd but I can hear and feel the Cd drive spinning whenever I start it. Could there be a cable loose or something? I really can't get into anything other than the boot menu unless somebody knows something I don't. Please help me?

Answer:Operating System Not Found?

The boot order has changed. The whole "yadda yadda" thing means your system is attempting to boot off a network but no network is present. Disable network booting & set the boot order to CD, HDD.

First all, I was uncertain as to where to post this question, so I apologize..

I got an old laptop that screwed up on me a while back and I decided to try and fix it.

The problem is, I boot it up and it goes to a black screen. I'll include a picture. I've looked it up and found little help. I do NOT have the operating system CD with me, but I do have it on a USB drive.

I'm assuming I have to put a new OS on it, but I'm not sure how to do it via USB. Also, I've checked on the setup thing and my hard drive IS listed, so my harddrive isn't dead.

If you need any more info just ask. I'm not very educated with computers so try to dumb it down if you can.

Hi, my Acer Aspire One was upgraded to Windows 10. Eventually, I ran into some issues with the start menu not popping up, so I decided to run a clean reset of Windows 10. The reset failed, so I turned off the notebook. When I turned it back on, the message "An operating system wasn't found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart," popped up. My first option was to try to use either f2 or f12 to see if there was some way to get around the issue, but then I remembered that, recently, my notebook had stopped responding to those commands. I do have a USB Logitech K120 keyboard hooked up to it (since the original keyboard messed up,) but it had been working fine for those commands and such up until now.

Today, I downloaded Win 10 using the Media Creation Tool in an attempt to create a bootable USB drive. I plugged that in, yet it doesn't seem to recognize it at all. The same message pops up as before. My acer doesn't have a CD-ROM or anything of the sort, so the USB appears to be my only hope. Is there anything that I can do? I'm hoping there's a way I can force the notebook to recognize the USB, or at least boot into the f2 or f12 commands to see if I can use them in any way. Thank you.

I turn on my XP home edition computer, the blue "HP" screen momentarily flashes on the screen then it goes black with the message that Operating system not found.

I first checked to see if my hard drive was detected in the BIOS, which it was. Next I tried to repair the master boot record as described on HP's website by turning on the PC and pressing the F10 key repeatedly to reach the recovery screen. The instructions said to click Advanced Options. I didn't see any Advanced Options. Instead a box popped up asking if I wanted to run recovery which I selected yes. Things looked like t hey were working and it got to about 18% when I received the following message:

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

File is missing or corrupt:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please reinstall a copy of the above file.

How can I install this file if the computer will not boot?

Answer:Operating System Not Found

you should check your microsoft windows xp home edition cd for scratchs other wise try to do a clean install

Perform a clean install of Windows XP
follow these steps to install Windows XP:
1. Start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM. To do this, insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into your CD drive or DVD drive, and then restart your computer.

2. When you see the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.

3. At the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup.

4. Read the End-User License Agreement, and then press F8.

5. Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.

6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Windows XP Setup.

i hope that helps

I did the conversion from Windows 7 to Windows 10 about 1.5 months ago.
This is a Dell Vostro w/Intel Corei5 desktop

All was fine until I attempted to wake the computer from sleep mode recently and got the following error.

An operating system was not found. Try disconnecting any drives that don't contain an operating system
Press Ctrl+Atl+Del to restart

I disconnected the two external drives I had connected and tried again with the same result.

On startup, I've hit F12 to run through the Dell ePSA Pre-boot system assessment and it passes all the tests
System, Cables, OS boot Path, Hard drive, cd rom drive, video card, cpu fan, system fan processor and memory.

I have the original 7, 64 bit installation disks, but nothing for Windows 10. What's the best way to get this thing going again?
I appreciate any help you all can give me.....

Answer:An operating system was not found......

This may indicate your Windows boot configuration has become corrupted or you have a disk error.

I suggest you boot from your Windows 10 installation CD / USB drive and try the startup repair option. See Startup Repair - Run in Windows 10 You will need to create a Windows 10 installation disk if you don't have one using the Windows Media Creation Tool. See USB Flash Drive - Create to Install Windows 10. You can create a bootable Windows 10 USB drive or ISO file you can burn to create a bootable CD.

Come back for more help if needed.

I have tried pressing F2 and changing to default settings but this has not worked.

There is some information on the hard drive that i would like to recover so if possible i don't want to re-format the hard drive.

Any help would be most appreciated!!

Okay, so one of my buddies got another hard drive for his computer (well, 2 actually, a 30GB and an 80GB, both as secondary drives). Now, when he went to start up the comp with the hard drives in, it asked him to put in the boot disk, and when i put them in as slave drives in my old comp, it said OS not found. So, i figure, the drives are bad as both systems boot up fine with any other slave drives besides those two (to his misfortune, as he loses over 6 gigs of music and some other files that were on that 30GB). I then took a CD combo drive out of his comp, and placed it in my old comp, and it gave me the OS not found message again. The CD drive still works in his comp, but not in mine. Anyone have any idea why this would be? I'm just really confused as to why this is happening in my comp, but not his, even though this CD drive was originally in my old comp anyway.

Answer:Operating System Not Found!!

Remove the power cord from the back of the computer. Most computers these days don't have a truly "off" state but just go into a hibernation when you Start -> Shutdown. Depriving it of electricity for at least five minutes should do the trick.

Secondly, check the jumpers on your original hard drive and the new one. One should be set to Master and the other one to Slave if they are on the same IDE channel.

Welcome to TSG!!

I've been getting this error a lot lately on my tablet PC. Specifically it says this:

PXE-E61:Media test failure,check cable.
PXE-M0F:Exiting Intel PXE ROM
~something about booting from LAN~

Operating System not found.

Restarting sometimes fixes the problem but it been getting worse.

The boot order in BIOS is CD-Drive, HDD, Floppy, LAN.

I've tried disabling the LAN boot device but now it just says:

"Operating System Not Found"

I'm thinking it may be a hard drive issue since sometimes, the hard drive is listed in the first screen in BIOS and sometimes nothing is listed as though no hard drive was installed. I've ran the Windows Vista memory test application and no errors were found so I don't think its a memory issue. The errors occur regardless of whether Vista or XP Table it installed. Should I look at getting a new hard drive?

Answer:Operating system not found

If the harddrive doesn't show in the BIOS then it's not gonna boot...

If it doesn't show in the BIOS chances are it's starting to fail. and you should look into getting a new one and cloning that drive right away..

Is there any way i can fix this? Oh and i have Windows 7 Starter edition, and its a Toshiba notebook laptop

Answer:Operating System Not found.

Can you boot to the Recovery partition (I assume that requires tapping a key at power on time; check Toshiba web site or your documentation for which key)? If so, try the recovery to factory defaults again.

Did you make a set of Recovery DVDs or CDs?
