Devices on my local network unreachable

Question: Devices on my local network unreachable

From a PC (called PC1 later on; running W10), I do not see other PCs or multimedia boxes connected on my local network.
Using \\192.xx.yy.zz doesn?t work.
From a W10 tablet PC (called PCt later on), I see other connected devices: Dune HD and PC1. From PCt I can even navigate into PC1 directories.

In PC1 Network and Sharing Center, I cannot enable file sharing.
When clicking on the button to activate it and then saving the changes, I notice, when reopening the parameters window, that it hasn?t been changed. It remains disabled.

The "computer browser" Service will not start because of dependencies (1068 error).
The "workstation" Service will not start because of dependencies (1068 error). This service is required to "computer browser"

Thanks in advance for your help.

Preferred Solution: Devices on my local network unreachable

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Devices on my local network unreachable

Have you set up a Home Group? In my experience that's the easiest way to get proper sharing setup.

Hi Guys,

I am at the end of my patience with this issue. Since I installed a fresh version of windows my laptop won't recognize the Ethernet cable and the speakers won't play any sound. The speaker icon shows no speakers or headphones are plugged in. I have tried updating the all the drivers (Using legacy as well as downloading from realtek website), but to no avail.

As far as ethernet issue is concerned, I don't even see the ethernet adapter listed under the network adapters in device manager.

Whatever more info you need about my laptop, I will share.

Please Help.

I've been trying to connect a newly aquired machine to my network with no luck what-so-ever. Initially I installed Windows XP professional with SP2 onto the machine only to be hit with the infamous "Limited or no connectivity" issue. Upon researching this error, I came across various solutions including the Microsoft SP2 Patch KB884020 with no luck. I still cannot get this machine to connect to the network. Everything I've tried is listed below.

Replaced the Hub twice
Tried with no Service packs, and with 1 seperately, and service packs 1 and 2
I've tried the winsock XP fix after reading it may be a corrupt IP table
I've run a registry fix i found on some forums (i have a feeling thats the same as the winsock XP fix though)
I've flushed out my DNS
I've tried 3 different network adapters, an nForce Motherboard mounted one. a Realtek one, and a Sitecom one
Manually assigned an IP address in the range which DHCP would assign

All of the above has failed. It is only this machine which fails. I've got numerous other machines on my network which are all recieving dynamic IPs from DHCP perfectly every time yet this PC hasn't recieved an IP once.

I read that if you can ping the computer's local IP, and ping its loopback address 127.0.0.1 successfully, it's not a corrupt IP table, but bad network drivers. However having tried 3 different network adapters with CD drivers from purchase, and drivers obtained on the inter... Read more

Instead of trying everything possible you should approach this step by step. Use a static IP when testing at all times.

Update: see iperf tests below. Issue appears to be OS-related. No speed problems on Linux boxes, Windows causes upload slowdown.

Issue: using local gigabit network uploads peak at 7-10MB/s while downloads fully saturate the link at 110MB/s. This happens whether connected to a switch or with computers connected directly, as well as with a NAS. Both NICs confirmed to connect at gigabit speeds. I've updated NIC drivers to the latest. I've tried enabling and disabling Large Send Offload. Netbios is enabled.

I've tested laptop-switch-desktop, laptop-switch-NAS, desktop-switch-NAS, desktop-laptop, desktop-NAS and laptop-NAS connections using various cables and the end result is the same - downloads are at full 1000Mbps speed and uploads barely reach 100Mbps.

Any suggestions where to start looking here as wiring and NICs seem to have been eliminated as culprits?

Answer:Local network: uploads way slower than downloads on local network

Hi there

Not sure if the router has something to do with it - especially if it's an el-cheapo one from a typical ISP. There might be some fiddly parameters and also full duplex mode should be used.

Even though you are on a LOCAL LAN the whole kybosh still has to pass through the router -- that's the next place where I'd start looking for problems.

If you've directly connected the computers - via a "reversing LAN cable" and you aren't getting full speeds there's got to be something in the parameters of the NIC's.

I suspect that since until recently it was hard to get anything like 100Mb/s on UPLOAD this issue was never really dealt with - download speeds of nearly 1Gb/s have been available for ages now so the hardware is well fit for purpose.

Try also say using an FTP client l to transfer files rather than File explorer and see if that makes any difference.

Filezilla (it's free and has both a client and a server version).

FileZilla - The free FTP solution

Another issue could be the speed and buffer size of the HDD's themselves -- WRITE might be really slow which will kill your upload speed -- READS are often very much faster. If you've got an SSD connect say to your NAS via SATA-->USB3 adapter cable and copy a say 4GB file to the SSD -- now try your upload from the SSD and see what speed you get to the remote computer - first over direct LAN cable and then via the router. Ideally you should use an SSD on each end to test of course -- note ... Read more

Hey guys, I'm trying to setup an RMI in java, after struggling with it for a long time I noticed that it's probably not my RMI that isn't working, but that there's something wrong in my networking.
When I asked a friend outside of the city to ping me to test his ability to connect to me, he said the result was Destination Host Unreachable. After a lot of googling I got explained that this is likely a physical problem, which is weird because I have perfect internet acces. I've disabled all my firewalls, and googling this problem is nearly impossible because googling "Destination host unreachable" usually gives results of attempts to ping a local machine from another local machine, not getting pinged from outside of your network. Does anyone have any idea what this could possibly be ?
I've tried:
1. Restarting all network devices in my network.
2. Changing IPv4 settings to a static IP.
3. Activating Remote Access service (failed)
4. Checking all physical cables

Hello,
I'm currently in the process of testing/deploying IE11 in our environment and I've begun testing on the IE11 Enterprise Site List manager.
I've read that there are a few different ways to configure the XML file to apply via GPO per the article below.  HTTP, Local Network, Local File. (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Dn640699.aspx)
In my isolated testing I've chosen to use the local file method which is very easy to setup and use on a testing machine.
It looks like we have the flexibility to choose how we apply the XML file, and I was curious what the best options are and why?  Also are there examples of each setup being used and the benefits/downsides to each?
Here's the options that I can see using:
1. HTTP - setup an IIS website to host the XML file.
2. Local Network (UNC) - setup a UNC path on our DFS where we store the current XML file and users would have read only access to that location.
3. Local File - We could just deploy the XML file via SCCM package/application when updates to the list are required.
Could anyone please point me towards some articles, etc, explaining the pro's and cons of these methods and why I might want to choose one over the other?  I'm leaning towards just using a DFS share and option #2 because it doesn't require us to maintain
an IIS site for it but I am curious to hear if there might be any downsides to this method, or benefits to going with another method.
Thanks!

I bought this PlayStation2-like usb gamepad from cd-r King (a local gadget store here in the philippines). It was perfectly working alright on my windows xp desktop pc.

Now i have a new laptop, windows 7 home premium, and the same gamepad worked fine and was able to play a couple of games with it. Until recently (actually more or less a month ago), it just stopped working. Whenever i plug it, it keeps saying 'USB Device not recognized' and 'Device driver was not successfully installed' and the 'Code 43 error'.

What can i do? I really want to play with it. It worked before, i may just have done or installed something that conflicted with it. I tried it with my friend's laptop (xp) and it was working fine. I also tried another usb gamepad (from the same store but different model) on my windows7 laptop and it worked fine.

It's very strange. I wish someone could help. thanks!

P.S. I searched the web and this forum but no luck. I tried
installing/uninstalling drivers
disabling/enabling the device from device manager
uninstalling all devices under Universal Serial Bus Controllers
turning off my computer for a few minutes (my laptop's battery is not user-removable though)
Again. Thank you..

And oh, i saw this from the search result. His problem is almost the same as mine. But that post was way back in 2004.. http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/2...seem-have.html

This sounds really noobie of me but is it possible to improve local network transfer speed by adding a 2nd network card. I was planning to connect one exclusively for lan transfers and another one hooked to a separate wireless router.

Right now only a maximum of 3 users can stream SD videos off the PC before it gets a little choppy.

The pc in question runs on windows 7 and it's board has built in gigabit, I happen to have a spare gigabit card.

Answer:Will adding a 2nd network card improve local network transfer speed

That won't really help the way you are describing the problem, although adding access points will help with streaming to wireless devices.

Although there is a setting in Group Policy that allows you to use two connections at the same time, I don't believe it will help in this situation.

I've done many HD movie streaming tests on my system.

I can stream from my media PC to at least 7 other machines at the same time, 4 wired, 3 wireless, plus my TV, and have no problems at all, no skipping, no freezing, even with the same movie in the same place or with 8 different movies at once, my TV is connected to my media center PC so counts as the 8th one.

This is Gb LAN, and 300Mbps wireless but even the 65Mbps limited laptop has no problem.

I'm not really sure why you are seeing these limitations but it may be the router.

I got a pc that was literally stuffed up with viruses and malware.....I cleaned it up using several antiviruses connecting the HD to another pc using: nod32, dr web! live cd, pc tools.......all troubles seems to be solved except one......ANYTHING THAT WORKS UNDER THE NETWORK DEVICES TREE shows a yellow sign with code 39....I tried to put a self installing internet key with the same result. I cannot uninstall devices it says that the device may be needed to run the computer.....since the antiviruses removed several infections I have no idea about the name of the virus that caused this.

HI,

I have installed server 2003 on a small network and created a domain that is the same as the public domain name (ie the companies website).

This is now causing a problem because when i type in the public address (for example www.company.com) it is trying to resolve it locally - because the local domain name is also company.com.

Does anyone know if there is a way to get round this problem?

Many thanks in advance

Dave

Answer:problem with the local network having the same domain name as the public network

add 'local.' to the internal domain or change it altogether.

Your public domain should not have any connection into your private infrastructure,
but you may have references from private->public; not very common.

At random times throughout the day I get a pop-up message (from next to the clock) giving this message, it remains on screen just long enough to read it and then goes. I am just wondering if anyone can explain why it happens, please?Network details: - Belkin wired/wireless router, NTL BB, Realtek NIC on three PC's & wireless on laptop. The only one to display the message is one of the wired PC's - that one runs WinXP Pro.AVG scans daily, I sweep for spyware weekly and use a hardware firewall - although I'm sure its nothing malicious thats causing the message and its a Win XP message. Many thanksTony

Answer:"Local area network-A network cable is unplugged"

You've probably seen this but it seems to be the only relevant comment google can find:click hereThe "Local Area Network: A Network Cable Is Unplugged" message appears If you see this message in a pop-up window from the notification bar of the taskbar, the message is probably right--the cable from your computer to the LAN hub is unplugged or damaged. When you fix the connection, the message goes away.I presume your connection is ok?

Is there a way to manually delete/block/prohibit only certain portable devices from connecting to my Shared network using windows 10 default hotspot without changing the network ID to avoid possible bad feelings.

Answer:How do I restrain specified devices from connecting to my network without changing the network ID

Yep. Change the password. If you're using a router you can whitelist MCA addresses but sharing from a phone means you can't do that I think. Changing the wifi key though, that'll work and there's no need to change the SSID at all.

Over a two day period I spent four hours with Netgear premium support to resolve an issue I thought would take them ten seconds. I added a device to my network with a DHCP reservation and used port forwarding to make it accessible from outside my network. The device is an Arduino microcontroller with an ethernet shield which uploads data from a sensor that I monitor remotely. According to many Arduino Forum posts I read, I should be able to enter into the address bar my device IP address, a colon, and the port I have forwarded for it. For example: 168.192.1.10:8080 and see the data my device is reporting. That didn't work.

Finally Netgear gave me a web adress that resembles 76.xxx.xxx.xxx:xxxx and that works. Nothing in this address resembles my network, my device, or the forwarded port. I asked them how they came up with that but clearly they didn't want to take the time to explain. I asked, what if I want to do this again in the future- do I have to go through all this again? They said "yes, call us again and have a nice day." I have to go back to my router settings and make sure they didn't just dump me into a DMZ!

So my questions to you sages is what's the significance of this address that starts with 76, why is there so little out there about it? Does my ISP have control over this or does my router? And most of all how do I achieve this seemingly simply remote access myself?

Thank you!

Hi

I have a LAN with two computers with Windows 7 SP1 Enterprise, a NAS and a network printer multifunction.

This network is managed by a hardware firewall. The two computers do not have any firewall and antivirus and all network devices have the same workgroup.

On the window of a computer network, all network devices are displayed immediately. While, on the other computer, the computer with Windows 7 immediately appears; however, the other network devices were displayed after a long wait.

Since yesterday, on this computer, only this network devices are no more displayed; while the other computer displays all regularly.

Thanks

So I handle IT for a small business (20 employees) and have been gradually trying to transition our laptops from consumer grade to business level laptops with Windows Pro. This actually isn't my primary job but the company didn't have anybody handling it before I arrived so I've taken it on.

The last two laptops I've setup as using the users Azure/Office 365 logins and they default to pin for secure access. Note that as of now, only three computers out of ten are using this login method as the remaining ones using local accounts with Windows 10 Home. Also there is no Windows Server on our local network

The laptop I am currently trying to setup needs to access a database file on one of those other computers on the local network and I've been running some weird credentialing/access issues that a more experienced person would probably have anticipated.

So initially while using the pin for logging into Windows (which was the default for the Windows login), the new laptop wouldn't even see the computer with the database file despite being able to ping the IP Address. I then switched the logon to a password and then the computer showed up on the network discovery.

This time it's asking for network credentials to connect to Server (email and password) even though the server is local account. Another option was to use the security pin which again doesn't work.

Is there a way for me to access that computer?

I have the MS security. I worked at a company for 14 years, they gave me 4 laptops over that time. I moved to a new place and the neighbors have managed to get into my network as the system admin. Unfortunatly, my job ended due to lack of projects and the
company told me to keep the computers so I no longer have direct access to my actual system admin. He set my profile to local on my computers. I have admin rights but this person keeps going in and making changes to everything. They even made it to where I
could not access wifi and deleted my profile at one time. I am not technical but I did a system restore to retrieve it. I have looked everywhere and MS security does not see it as a threat so does nothing. I would like to set myself as my own system/network
admin. This person has deleted/changed stuff on my childrens kindles because they are set up in my name. I have been blocked from posting to facebook etc. I have no idea what to do and really would like my privacy back. I check event viewer and see that they
mirror my recent activity and do all kinds of stuff with my security that I cant change. They are very good at what they are able to achieve and I know so very little about IT. I feel like David and Goliath, only I forgot the stupid rock at home.

The fastest way -- FTPDMIN: Minimal ad-hoc file transfer Windows FTP server Windows 7 will alert you that it's listening on the FTP ports but that's what you want right? Make note of the IP address it's listening on and make sure that's the address on your local network you want.

Question: Local Network Fix

I posted a couple of days ago about my network access dropping from local & internet, to local, to no connection, after recently upgrading to vista.
I tried every solution othe people have posted on the net but my problem still persisted.
So last night I reinstalled vista and created a restore point after the 1st start-up. I was able to use the internet without interruption for over 5 hrs. Then this morning windows installed updates. After the updates were installed my problem started again. I went ahead and restored my computer to the 1st restore point, and now it is working fine.
My fix to this problem is to not install any updates. I know that it is not the proper fix, but for anyone as frustrated with vista as i am, this is a way to maintain your internet connection.
I am a newcomer to vista, but I found out that this problem has been happening to other for years. I can't understand why microsoft wont fix this problem.
If this post helps anyone else with the same problem, please reply with your story.

Answer:Local Network Fix

the problem with not updating vista is it leaves your operating system wide open to attack , thats exactly how conficker spread. An unpatched OS can make your firwall and AV next to useless

why dont you set your updates so they are not automatic , then pick the updates to install , install them one at a time run your pc for a while each time until you find the offending update

My main computer with attached printer is in my basement. The internet runs from a router that is in my apartment and is connected by a wire. I am about to take delivery of a new laptop to use in my apartment and which will also connect to the router with a wire.
When I had an old laptop, if I wrote something in Word and wanted to print it, I had to copy it to a USB stick and take it to the main computer. I got into difficulties with a Power Point presentation which I was developing on the main computer but running on the laptop, ensuring that the files on the two machines were the same.
It would be extremely convenient if I could:
(a) share files beetween the two computers i.e. to open something on one machine that physically existed on the other machine, and update it.
(b) Be able to print something from the laptop on the Canon MG 5250 printer. The printer has some form of networking capability but I'm not sure what.
(c) Have Skype running on both computers and to accept a call on the one I nearest to.
Do I need to set up a network and, if so, how?
The new laptop will be running Windows XP SP3 the same as my main computer unless I convert the main computer to Windows 7 which I am reluctant to do.

Answer:Do I need a local network?

Yes. Why on earth order a new laptop with XP on it? (I assume it is brand new - can you still get XP on a brand new machine?) All you have said can be done by setting up a local network.
Basically you run the Network wizard in control panel on both machines. Make sure you have the same network name in both - the default is MSHOME or on a XP Pro machine WORKGROUP - change both to something else.
Reboot both computers. You may need to set up an account password on both machines but you should then be able to view files, share printers as above.

Hi All,
I used to see all my network devices in windows explorer under "Network" (not HomeGroup) such as all my computers (Win 7, VISTA, etc.) IP CAMs, router, network printer and IP Hard Drive (NAS).
I could double click on any and after entering login information I could access whatever the device had to offer (shares, config menus in case of router, etc)

After installing TuneUp Utilities 2011, all I see is my computers, non of the other computers, no printer, no IP cams, no router, no net drive.

I am running windows 7 ult. x64. My network is set to "Home" and the firewall is disabled.

Does anybody have an idea what setting got changed?

Thanks a lot.

Question: Network Devices

When i go to see what devices are on my home network. Here's the scenario.

1) Laptop 1 (W7 only) can see Laptop 2 (W7 dual boot with W8).
2) Laptop 2 (when booting into W7) can see Laptop 1 AND it can also see itself as W8. This means there are 3 devices when there are only 2.
3) Laptop 2 (when booting into W8) can only see itself, not Laptop 1.

This is interesting.

I have 3 laptops connected to a wifi network, an XP Pro, Visa Home and a Windows 7 64bit ultimate.

The XP and Vista machines can see the other two but the windows 7 cant see the XP or the Vista machines.

The XP machine can even see files on the Windows 7 machine shared folders.

But the windows 7 machine can not see other devices.

The windows 7 machine can access printer on the network and the internet.

Windows 7 machine has file and printer sharing on and is set to discoverable on the network.
{the wifi network is in a home group}

I just cant get it to see network drives or even the other PCs.

Answer:Cant see devices on network

it can be the firewall of the anti virus software check there first to see if it is blocking the sharing of the devices

Hi there,
I just started playing with my new Windows 8 machine but I am having problems accessing <some> devices on the network:
The W8 machine can see: itself, Router, Win7 desktop, wireless printer, wireless camera
It canNOT see: XP desktop, XP laptop, Print server, NAS
All of devices on the network (including the W8 machine) are visible from both XP machines and from my Windows 7 machine .

Things I tried / verified:
All machines are in the same workgroup (no Homegroup)
All machines have the same date / time
I can ping Windows 7 machine, both XP machines, NAS, Print Server from Windows 8 machine
Using "Wireless network watcher" from Nirsoft, I can see ALL devices from the W8 machine
EDIT: I just found out, the problem only occurs when connecting over Wifi (either 2.4 or 5GHz). When I connect with an Ethernet cable, all devices are visible.

Network sharing on Windows 8 machine is turned ON
Network discovery on Windows 8 machine is ON
Password-protected sharing on Windows 8 machine is turned OFF
File and printer sharing on Windows 8 machine is turned ON

Firewall on XP desktop machine is turned off (temporarily - for testing purposes only)

Any ideas what else I could try to beat Windows 8 into submission?

Answer:W8 cannot see <some> devices on the network

Changing the lanman server settings and disabling encryption on the Windows 8 machine may help with the NAS, I'm not sure if this will help with the XP machines or the print server but it might.

This link shows which settings require the adjustments.

Hi.

I am running Vista Ultimate.

The network is made of about 7 computers (all XP except mine), no servers. All computers are configured with the same workgroup (no domain).

My PC can't see the computers on the network. I have changed workgroup and restarted to no avail. The problem persists with wireless or connected via ethernet.

Also, every now and then, it can't connect to a network printer because it can't see it on the network (reports it as offline). If I reinstall the printer by adding a printer, then it works... for a while.

I have tried changing the type of network (from private to public and back to private), have tried to disable firewall, but this has not helped either.

Any suggestions on what may be causing this?

Thanks,

This just happened out of nowhere yesterday morning. My roommate was using her laptop with no issues until suddenly the connection cut out. She tried reconnecting, but had no luck so she waited, still no signal. She was able to see our network name but it would not allow her to connect to it. Same thing when I tried my laptop. I could see it scanning wi-fi and showed available connections including our own, but it wouldn't let me connect.

The desktop in our home office has internet. The modem is showing all the proper lights flashing, indicating there is ethernet, DSL and internet.

When we open our laptops and get a signal even for a brief moment, it kills the connection on the desktop and all lights on the modem go off, except the power light which starts flashing slowly. Totally loses connection. As soon as we close the laptop, the connection comes back on the desktop.

I noticed that the icon in the tray that indicates connectivity (the two computer monitors flashing blue back and forth) looks different than normal. There is no little globe in front of them, there are just two monitors and there is usually a globe showing internet access. So I clicked it and it says we're connected to "Network 7" Access: local. So I took a screen shot of this.

What is going on, can someone help me out? I have no idea what to do but we need internet on the laptops. If you need any more information from me, feel free to ask! Thanks!

Hi,

Basically, my computer is a Samsung and I use a wireless Internet connection.

We have a BT hub which was changed 2 weeks ago, my computer worked fine until a week ago when I turned it I and it would no longer connect to the Internet. I called BT and they went through lots of options.

Turned the Internet off and on
Tried manually putting in a new IP address
Reset the adapter and run troubleshooting
Connected the computer to the hub with a wire

None of these things worked! I was on the phone with them for an hour and a half. I saw some one on here tell another user to do a system restore, but I only have the option to restore it from 5 days ago, but it's now been 7 days since the problem started!

I really need the Internet, but I am useless. Does anyone have any clue how I can make it work again!?

Thank you so much for any help you can give

Georgia

Answer:Unidentified network/ local only

When you connected directly, did it work? As unless something else can get aqccess, i'd be incline to think bad hub.

I think you should find an app from Network Information Tools - TotalShareware Software Archive

If you want to go overkill - check out the ultimate network analyzer: The Ethereal Network Analyzer. I was quite amazed of how much information is being transferred all the time on LAN.

Um ok....
So I am getting HUGE lag between boxes.

Code:

--- 10.0.0.3 ping statistics ---
55 packets transmitted, 55 packets received, 0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max = 18.124/457.124/915.635 ms

I dont know where to begin with this one.
I rectently bought a 10/100/1000 card for my file server, and it has been working perfectly up until today.
I have been getting insane lag times which make file transfers near impossible, and RD totally unusable
I have tried with my integrated 10/100 nic and I get good times( 0.258), but 10/100 is slow for what I am doing.

Box thats lagging:
1.7P4
RG1032v2 on a 32 bit PCI bus with newest drivers

Box I am pinging from:
Dual 2Ghz G5.. Yes a mac (shut-up)

This is on a 10/100/1000 network

I dont have any apps to diagram this properly, so my awesome photoshop skills will have to do.
edit: seems that iupload is down, so im hosting on my home server... slow

At work here I've got three machines, two on Windows 98SE and one on Windows 2000. The Win 2000 is in the office and I want to share files with the two 98 machines. I have these click here although they work, the connections are a bit flakey, so I probably need a router. No Internet or Intranet is involved so any suggestions on routers would be appreciated.Thanks.

Answer:Which router for a local network?

The purpose of a "Router" to is to route Internet traffic to the appropriate computer in a network. If there is no Internet involved in your network, then a Router is not the solution you are looking for.At the moment, if all computers are using USB Wireless Network Adapters and connecting via an "Ad Hoc" network, you should probably be looking at replacing the Wireless Network Adapter in the MAIN PC with a "Wireless Access Point". This plugs into a conventional *wired* network adapter and, as its name suggests, provides an Access Point for wireless adapters to connect to a wired network (in this case just your main PC). You would then have an "Infrastructure" wireless network instead of an "Ad Hoc" one. The difference is that, instead of all three PCs talking directly to one another, they would all communicate via the Wireless Access Point, the main PC through its *wired* connection and the other two *wirelessly*.The alternative is to set up a completely WIRED network. This would involve connecting each PC to a "Network Switch" by ethernet cable.

This is probably a very easy/stupid question, but searching for it appears to be difficult. I have an old computer that I plan to use as an HTPC in my bedroom that I want connected to my network, but not to the internet. I assume there is an option in either my router or computer to allow it. Searching only gives me people who cannot connect to the internet but can connect to their network (as a problem). The computer is running XP Pro and I have it connected to a switch that is then connected to a Linksys WRT54G router. I don't plan to run anti-virus on it, so I really would like it to only access my other PCs. TIA

Answer:Want access to local network only

Give it a static IP, don't enter a default gateway.

However, just because it can't access the internet does not mean it can't get infected by a virus. Without internet access, it won't have Windows Update access either. Which means when the next incarnation of something like conficker runs rampant on your network, this machine will get it too.

Question: local area network

hi, my name is clark. recently, i have had this problem with my LAN. when i first hooked up to the router, there was no problem accessing the internet or sharing my musice through itunes with the other computers that were connected to the router. however, after a thunderstorm in which the power was temporarily interrupted, i lost the connection to the LAN. it indicates that i am connected to a LAN, but i cannot access any of the aforementioned. it also shows that the rate of information that is being channeled thru the connections is really small compared to normal numbers. i tried to change the speed of the card, i switched ports on the router, i assigned my computer a static IP address, i tried to connect to my friends computer directly, all of which did not work. i would like to thik that my card is still funcitonal, as it says so on its properties screen. i am suspicious that the setting on my computer were changed, altho i am not sure. i tried to hook the internet straight into my ethernet card, but that did not work. i run on a windows xp home edition, i have a VIA rhine II ethernet card. the router is a d-link model that still works for the other computers on the network, which are macs. i dont think that changes anything, because we are all connecting to the internet through the router, not an administrative computer. please help me if it is at all possible. thanks a lot for trying

That's a hard one, especially if you can't even connect to the internet. Of course, if you are using the LAN settings, you wouldn't be able to connect to the internet, anyway.

Can you create a new connection with all the default settings and then try the internet?

Can you switch a crad with someone to see if yours is the problem?

Hi, This is urgent

Something happened to my computer after the last virus scan. I was thinking maybe my files got deleted with it

I am not able to connect to the internet trough CABLE. The cable hole on my software shows a green sign (means it is connected?), but there is no sign of connectivity

I tried a different cable network, and I still get the same. No reaction whatsoever from the internet

Only wireless is available, which is ridiculous for a Desktop

I open the network connections and there is nothing, just wireless drivers and wireless availability

I tried to create a network manually but, the computer only allows me to create wireless or such connections

Everything is really slow..i cant even watch a video or play a game. everything gets jammed. tx to the wireless

How to fix this?

Answer:my local network does not work

I think that, possibly, a quick fix might be a system restore. If the problem was due to the last scan it should work.

If I have three computers on local network and only one has internet access will this update all machines on local network?

Answer:Updates on Local Network

Yeah - this is a great option. It does not entirely stop getting stuff from internet as it is basically a torrent system, but is much faster and much reduces download demand

A torrent system basically extacts bits of a file from multiple sources, so each serving pc does not have to upload whole file (uploading usually being slower than downloading), and receiving pc glues it all together again. So you might get 5 pcs uploading a fifth each of the file at the same time, and pc can download all five parts simultaneously as download is usually several times faster than upload. It actually works in much smaller increments, but the principle is the same.

I always update my fast pc first, leaving my other slower devices switched off. Then I turn on other devices, and you see the hdd flicking away as it serves the updates to the other devices.

Do not enable last option as it will 'steal' bandwidth from you.

Hi everyone,

I have a problem. One of the computers here at work can't log into the network. When I click O:\ Drive it gives me an error saying "Local device in use". This has happend before in the past. The problem was one of the tech guys hooked up a laptop and put a IP address that someone already using, so they put a different IP Address for the laptop. But the computer still could not get into the network drive. Eventually the problem was resolved but I was not here to see it done.

I already checked the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties and everything looks ok.

Does anyone has a resolution for this?

Question: Local Area Network

I recently had to re-install Windows XP (SP2) on my Dell 5150 Laptop. I have not been able to get my internet connection to work since the re-install. I have plugged the cable into my network card in the computer and the light that comes on is orange and not green. I know the cable and internet connection work fine because I use that same connection/cable on my desktop computer with no problems. I recently used this same port on my laptop not more than a week ago with no glitches. I have gone to Network Connections in the control panel and there is no Local Area Connection icon being displayed. There is a 1394 Connection and a Wireless Network Connection icon displayed but no LAN connection. I do not have a wireless Network connection so I am unable to use that. Please let me know what you think about why I do not have a LAN connection.

Thanks!

I set up a local network using three computers. Two are running Windows 98-se and one is using XP, I used a LINKSYS 4 port router, I have cable Internet service. The problem: sometimes they see each other, sometimes not. I can access the Internet only on one computer (one of the ones using windows 98se) what can I do to get Internet access on all computers?

Answer:Local network problem

On all the computers, open up a command prompt and run IPCONFIG /all

See what IP address information they are all getting. The only thing that should be different is the actual IP address. The subnet mask, gateway and DNS addresses should all be identical.

Hey guys -

We are bringing our exchange/bes hosting in house instead of paying for a manage exchange host.

Through our ISP we get 5 external static ips.

What i was thinking was to give the exchange and bes server their own external ip, and using another ip for the rest of the equipment (domain controller, our desktops etc).

I want to keep all machines however on the same internal network.

Is something like this possible?

Answer:2 External IP, 1 Local Network ?

one of those dual wan routers?

Alright, so I just did a fresh install of Windows 7 build 7086 x64. Everything works just find, except my network adapters. I'll detail system specs after I explain the problem.

When i connect one of my cables, the computer attempts to identify the network. It doesnt. I check IPconfig, and it gets all DHCP information from my Linksys router, but no internet connection. I have IPv6 turned off on both adapters, as well as the VMnet adapters i use for VMware Workstation.

I attempt to ping google.com and it comes back, ping request could not find host
I attempt to ping the router, and says host unreachable.

(IPconfig data - Local Area Connection 2) (Local Area Connection 1 shows up the same with IPv4 Address 192.168.1.102)
Connection-specific DNS Suffix : oxfordnetworks.net
IPv4 Address : 192.168.1.103
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1

The Gateway itself sees the Win 7 computer, but when i ping from the router to 192.168.1.103, it times out.

Also, I attempted to update the network drivers using the Intel Pro v14 Vista x64 drivers, and the installer wouldnt let me install the drivers because of "software not built for your operating system"

System Specs:
Supermicro X8SAX x58 motherboard
core i7 920
ATI 4890 (XFX Extreme Edition)
6gb 3x2gb 1333 Corsair XMS
WD64000AAKS 640 GB Western Digital HDD
2x LG SuperMulti DVD burners

Everything EXCEPT the network is working flawlessly on this sytem

Answer:local only network - wired

Hello Jrdonnaruma,

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Oxfordnetworks.net is a local outfit. We must practically be neighbors.

Only idea I have is to try installing the Vista drivers in compatibility mode: Info here if needed: Compatibility Mode

Hope this helps and that you enjoy the forums.
Please keep us posted.

Hi there

Posted in the General Software section but got no replies and was directed to come here instead.

Basically, I have my setup at home like this (if it even matters): a Netgear router sitting in the middle of my house connected to my ADSL phone line. My PC on the other side of the house is connected to a wireless bridge (a Linksys flashed with DD-WRT). Then I have my Xbox 360 (and soon to be delivered Boxee Box) on the OTHER side of my house also connected to a (separate) wireless bridge (also a Linksys flashed with DD-WRT).

All I want is a piece of software that'll give my stats on the local throughput to each device on my network.

I stream 720p files to my 360 and notice that at some points it buffers and I basically want to see stats that how how many Mbps my PC is actually streaming the movie to my 360 at.

I found a screenie from someone's Youtube video and basically I want something similar to this (that shows signal strength over time, bandwidth over time etc)

Hope this thread will be more successful.

Answer:Local Network stats - which app is best?

Personally I'd just use inSSIDer to map out the wireless channels to use with the least interference/overlap from neighbors and call it a day...

holy crap, they must have your connection limited by file type or something.

My main NT machine cannot see my local network. The problem is not card or cabling. Forgive the long message, but I want to skip past the fixes I've already tried.

I have networked four machines in a workgroup called, let's say "Tollbooth.", with IP addresses in the 10.###.###.### range, incrementing the last digit, as described in all refence books (the IP addresses have been checked, verified, and rechecked) and using the same subnet mask (checked, etc.).

The machines are --
1. GreatOne, the Micron, NT 4.0 SP6a, diaup modem. 3Com 509 Combo NIC with latest drivers and diagnostics, RAS, NetBEUI, TCP/IP, WINS client. The NIC adapter is bound to all three protocols but not to RAS services. I have two RA WAN Wrappers listed; the one bound to everything but NetBIOS, the other bound only to "RA WAN Wrapper" [?]
When I choose Network Neighborhood, GreatOne can see the workgroup, but not the machines, NOT EVEN ITSELF.

2. Slippage,Toshiba Portable, Win 98, RealSYS MCMCIA card, Win 98 dialup for builtin modem. It can see [4] Zipper, and [2] itself. Cannot see [1] or [3].

3. Shapeless, handbuilt, NT 4.0 recently reinstalled and then updated with SP6a. 64 megs of RAM, 120mHz, LinkSYS card. Networked successfully before crash and SP6a (when running SP4). Can see [2] and [4], but it can't run Server services because "not enough server storage is available." (I have tired every legal setting for IRPStackSize [4-12] to no avail.) So it is inv... Answer:NT Machine can't see local network

Check to see if the "Computer Browser" service is running on the NT machine Great One (under Control Panel/Services). If it's not start it. If it was running then stop and restart the service. If that fails remove great One from the workgroup and re-add it.

As for Shapeless I would uninstall and reinstall the service pack to see if that fixes the problem.

I would also dump NetBEUI on allv the machines since you don't actually need it when running TCP/IP.

Hope this helps.

I recently purchased a new HP laptop with built in wireless adapter. While setting up this PC I connected to my wireless network just fine to update the windows operating system, (Vista Home Premium).

A few days later I upgraded my desktop PC which is connected to the router with a cable from XP Media Edition to Windows Vista Home Premium.

Now, when I turn on my new laptop it will only connect to my wireless network "locally" and not connect to the Internet.

Nothing has changed with my router.

What gives? I can't make it work.

I'm on a domain here at my office. I have files stored on my server I need to access (client info). When I need to troubleshoot a client's system, I logon to their VPN and now I can access their server to do work. However, I no longer have access to my own network, because im on their VPN.

What can I do to keep local access to my own network when im on their VPN. Is installing a 2nd network card possible, if so, how would i handle the vpn/local access, via the route command in dos??

If it just standard windows VPN then you can split the tunnel

Hi there,

I have a very small local network consisting of a desktop and a laptop both running windows 10 fall creator. The desktop is connected by cable to a router and the laptop connected via wifi. The desktop's file manager can see the laptop, but the desktop is not shown on the laptop's file manager. That is, sometimes the desktop is displayed, but other times it is not. In short, the network is very unstable. I have pinged the desktop from the laptop and the connection seems ok, and I have also pinged 127.0.0.1 to check the network card of the the laptop. Also fine.
I have run the Windows built-in trouble shooter to check on the network card. It can't find anything wrong with it . I have diagnosed the network itself. Same result nothing wrong. I have tried and tried, but it seems I can't find what is at fault here.

So what I am asking is this. When the network is down, is there anything I can do to sort of "wake" it up or do I have to wait till next time it chooses to connect the desktop to the laptop that is the desktop is displayed by the laptop's file manager.

Answer:Very unstable local network

Check how long the lease on the IP address's are in the router.

I had a similar issue every hour or so and found it was renewing the ip address every hour.

Other then that its a matter of rebooting all devices and changing the cable to the desktop.

So frustrating. Okay. I have a pretty basic network. Its 3 computers, 1 wireless 2 wired. all through 1 router. Okay I have an ADSL modem to a Linksys WRT54g, then two computers wired, one on wireless and an XBOX 360 wired too. I cannot ping one wired computer to the other, both computers can ping the router and both can ping loopback (127.0.0.1)

Why cant they ping eachother? I have had this network setup and running before, now i have updated both motherboards in both wired computers and reinstalled windows on both aswell. They used to communicate perfectly and when i went to setup the network they could already ping eachother so i never had a problem. any suggestions?

Answer:Solved: Need Local Network Help PLEASE

If they are both accessing the internet through the same router an inability to ping is almost always a firewall issue.

how can i manage vlc on one network to another
it is http interface something

Answer:remotely use vlc on local network

Which is it, local network or one network to another and if the latter, is it via the Internet or still local?

Remote on a local network is a snap. After assigning a static local I.P. to all server machines if you haven't already (not needed if you use machine name instead), share the folders you want to serve and just open them across the network.

Since the last week, i've been trying to establish a local network between different computers at home via wireless mode.
I have a BELKIN 802.11b router, 1 PC, 1 Power Book G4, 1 iBook G4, 1 DELL Latitude with WI-FI built-in, and several other Computers that connect oftenly to internet through the router.
As usual, I would like to share files beetween computers, printers and scanners.
Every Mac is equipped with Panther OSX, my PC has Windows PRO SP2 in it.
The uncommon thing here is that I have 2 connections to internet, one is Wireless through a WI-FI SLOT 5 card, the other is through 1000/100 built-in LAN in the Motherboard.
I tried to setup the Network, but the BRIDGE doesn't alloud to put every connection under it, says that I have to have at least 1 outside it (1 out of 3, while the 3rd one is IEEE) therefore, it's impossible to enhace the Network.
I tried to figure out how to stablish the network without setting up the NET BRIDGE, so if anyone knows how to fo this, I would appreciatte it very much.
THNX.

Hi,
I have an Acer Aspire V5 running Windows 8 and am having trouble connecting to the home router/modem - Netgear CGD24N v2. I can connect to other wifi hotspots (such as tethering to my phone) and other computers work with the home router, just none with windows 8.
The laptop will recognise the network, connect locally and then say 'identifying...', but rarely manages to get internet access. It has done so a couple of times, but only when right next to the router and even then, it drops out relatively quickly afterwards. It has no problems connecting to the router via ethernet cable

I've seen people ask for it before, so here is the info from command prompt in case it's any use:

Answer:Local Only Network Connection

Make sure you have the latest firmware for the router. Then reset it to factory defaults and reconfigure it. (Make sure you know the important settings before starting this procedure.)

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 8 or 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Identify your network if it is not obvious.

Also show ...

Open a (black) Command Prompt window:
Hold the Windows logo key and press r; in the Run box type cmd and click on OK.

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I have just up dated four of our computers to windows 10 and set up a wifi network between the 4 computers without too many problems.
However I have a problem with a local connection from my main pc (windows 10) to a pc which runs in parallel (pc on windows xp) they are linked by ethernet cable. When I boot the machines in the morning windows 10 displays an icon with the xp pc and all works fine. Later on in the day the xp pc icon has disappeared but working on the xp machine it is still possible to link to the windows 10 machine.
My question is once the icon has disappeared of the windows 10 pc how can I re-establish to link? It appears that the link still exists but I can't access it.

Answer:local network 10 to xp ethernet

Confusing setup.

When the icon disappears, trying typing the ip of the machine into explorer.

Like this:

Code:

or
\\10.0.0.28\

Hello!

One of my mom's friend recently gifted me his old laptop, because he bought a new one. It is a Windows Vista, 32-bit about a month ago. Everything was working fine, until last night when I closed my laptop in the middle of a Netflix show. Perhaps that was wrong, but I've never had that issue before.

Anyway, this morning when I woke up, my internet was not working. The diagnostics said that my Wireless Security Key was not correct, even though I typed in the correct password. I even checked on my phone, and my phone worked!

So on my phone, I managed to Google the issue. I tried the solutions, and none of them worked. Till I was fed up, went into my router by clicking, properties and tried every single security type. Then magically it worked!

Ironically, on the same security type that it started with:
WPA-Personal
TKIP

However, now my wireless says: Local and Internet.

What does that mean? Does that mean that now everybody in my apartment can connect to my internet, and reach all my files? All my passwords, and secure information? If so, how do I change it back to being private?

Thank you anyone who can help me!

Hey guys!

I recently shared my wireless internet connection with a neighbor to cut the price. However I don't feel entirely confident doing so. I would like to know if there is any software available on the net that could help me control bandwidth and such. I would like to make sure she doesn't use P2P. If there are other ways of checking such things with command promt, I do have a fairly good understanding of computers and programming.

Thanks for your time!

Answer:Local network supervising

I've never used software to control bandwidth, so I'm not familiar software that's available for that purpose. I'll just mention one I found via a Google search on bandwidth control software: http://bandwidthcontroller.com/

Is a wireless router part of your Internet connection? If so, have you enabled any wireless security features in your router?

If am trying to share files / printer between to Win 7 computers on the same network. From one of the computers neither the homegroup or the network will work. I can see the other computer in the homegroup but I can't access the files.

With network, it tells me the network provider name is invalid. I will not even allow me to access the network folders on the local machine.

The machine has a single administrator account. I think that there is something wrong with the administrator privileges, but I am not sure what.

I have tried most of the things mention in this forum to right the problem, but nothing works. There was a suggestion to scan the system files for corrupted or broken files. It writes a log file at the end of this process. I couldn't examine the file because there is something wrong with my administrator privileges.

So HELP please.

Answer:Local Network Issue

Hi there,

If you're sure that the Homegroup in your network is setup correctly try creating a new account as Administrator from the problematic computer and see if you're able to access the shared network resources. Compare the ipconfig/all output of this computer to another working computer. If there's any discrepancies please post both ipconfig/all output in your next post.
