Data Usage stopped logging usage after deleting contents of SRU folder

Question: Data Usage stopped logging usage after deleting contents of SRU folder

so like the title says i have been using Brinks method to reset Data Usage by deleting the SRU folder contents , now somehow the SRU folder decided to stop rebuilding data , so i would like of all who has any sort of knowledge about this topic to supply tips regarding :
1 - If there is an MS Fixit app dedicated for that issue ?
or
1 - Appropriate folder permissions for the SRU folder
2 - Registry entries related to data usage and folder
3 - Services that regulates/operates data usage
to help me trouble shoot that issue ?

thanks in advance !

Preferred Solution: Data Usage stopped logging usage after deleting contents of SRU folder

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hijack log below

Two weeks ago my Quark 7 stopped working - it will start and come up with the splash screen, but then will not go any further - a list of processes shows it's running at 50 cpu usage and 78944 memory usage. I have tried uninstalling reinstalling and have ran Norton's Antivirus, Spybot Search and Destroy and CCleaner to no avail. I have attached my HiJack log below.

The main programs that I use daily (and yes Quark is one of them) are the following

Adobe Photoshop CS3, ACDSee 9, Outlook express, Quark 7.0, Internet Explorer, Dreamweaver 8

Thank you for taking the time - I'm pretty frustrated!

First and Long!

(First time poster - long time lurker)

I was getting the "hal.dll corrupt" message every time I attempted to start in Safe Mode and after reading a number of posts decided to recover my system to fix it.

It was a success and everything is running fine. On my C: drive I now have a folder "My Back Up 07-10-21) that is 35.8 GB and contains the entire file structure (including files) of my system PRE-Recovery. After a full virus scan I went through and moved any files I needed out of this folder.

This is where I run into problems ... As far as I know I no longer need the "My Back Up" folder or any of it's contents BUT every time I try to delete it I get "Cannot delete BOOKS: Access Denied" error message . I have even tried to uncheck the "READ ONLY" box under properties and that just gives me a bunch of "Access Denied" alerts for various files .

This folder is 35.8 GB and I would love to get that space back ... any solutions? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

My pin stopped working after Windows 10 did an update. I followed instructions read elsewhere to delete contents of my Ngc folder. I went to my account setting to create a pin. It asked me for my password to log in. I entered it and then nothing happened.

Now when I go back to sign-in options for my account and I click create pin the system works for a second and then stops and nothing happens. This is after a fresh reboot. If I try to enter the sign-in options a second time without rebooting the page does not load at all.

Thank you in advance for your help

Question: cpu usage logging

is there any software that can log cpu usage?

Answer:cpu usage logging

http://sysinternals.com/
Then for the exact program you have requested:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
They have a great collection of software. Process Explorer will tell you the cpu usage, and what program was using the cpu at the time.

So I'm wondering how I would have a vbs file that when run would:

Delete the contents of a specific folder
Download a specific zip file (to a temp location)
Extract this zip file to a specific permenant location
Give an "Installation Complete!" popup.

So far I've found this to do step 1:

Code:
Dim FSO, D, F
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set D = FSO.GetFolder("my/path/here")
For Each F In D.Files
FSO.DeleteFile F.path, True
Next
Does anyone know where I could find the script to do the other things, and put it all into one vbs that runs them in order?

Answer:Deleting Contents of a Folder, and Downloading and Extracting a Zip in VBS

It's probably feasible. I need some more information to suggest a possible solution.
- What protocol is used for downloading? http, ftp, ...
- Would you like to extract the zip file by vbs only or is there a program (7-Zip, WinRAR, ...) which should do that?
- What Windows version(s) are you working with?
- Is there a subfolder structure inside the zip file?

Task Manager graphs CPU usage as a whole, and can also show per-process CPU usage as percentages.

How do I get graphs or logs for individual processes?

Answer:CPU Usage Logging for Individual Processes

Start
Search for Performance Monitor, and run that
Expand Monitoring Tools and select Performance Monitor
Click the green + button in the toolbar
Scroll down the list and select Process
In the list below that will be a list of all processes running
Click Add to whichever ones you want to track
Once finished there, click OK and your back on the main screen
Untick any tracking you don't want to see in the list at the bottom (look at the Instance field for the name of the process)

In order to use my memory at its rated specification, my CPU has to be overclocked and this also means it has to be over-volted. I don't want to change the CPU cooler if I don't have to and I'm trying to find out how much time my CPU approaches 100% to find out whether I need to consider it.

If I use a stress test (OCCT), the maximum permissible temperature is exceeded after about 150 seconds and the test aborts.

I have set up Performance Monitor to log % Processor Time every five seconds so I can find out if it ever hits 100% in practice and if so, for how long but I would also like to know what program is using the most CPU time and don't know how to include that information in the logging. Ideally I'd only record which programs are using over, say, 20% and only when CPU usage total is over, say 70%.

Answer:Logging CPU usage over long term (every five seconds for a month)

Why does your cpu have to be OC`d to run your memory at max speed ?

Never heard that before.

My memory runs at 2800 all the time, never had to OC the cpu for it to do that.

CPU`z will show you what your cpu`s running at at any given moment.

Windows 7 SP1 64-bit

When I attempt to view a specific folder's contents in Windows Explorer, it appears to be stuck in a loop and does not show the contents. The scroll-bar on the right flashes non-stop. This only started today.

If I rename the folder, the problem goes away and I can view the folder content.

If I then rename the folder back to what it was before, the problem returns.

This issue also occurs with the same specific folder, if I boot into Safe-Mode (which would seem to rule out it being a 3rd-party software conflict issue).

If I login using a different user account the problem does not occur (so it seems to be an issue
with the user account).

The problem does not occur if I map a drive from a second computer and view the folder contents.

The problem doesn't occur when I use the Save As function to save another file to that specific folder.

I have performed an extended memory check, along with running "chkdsk /R" with no change in behavior.

Any helpful tips on getting to the bottom of this would be much appreciated. I did find a reference to someone else having the same issues in a different forum (from Dec 2011); however, no help was forthcoming.

Answer:Windows Explorer stopped showing folder contents

*Resolved!

I used the following procedure which cleared up the folder content display loop preventing Windows Explorer from showing the folder contents:In the Tree Pane of Windows Explorer, I highlighted the problem folder
Activated the Menu Bar via Organize | Layout
On the menu bar I used View | Customize this folder...Selected General Items for the Optimize this folder for option

I applied the change and the folder contents once again became viewable (no slider bar flashing).
Changing the Optimize option back to Pictures still allowed the folder contents to be viewed.

I have this video file on my computer from when my cousin came over and I can't seem to get rid of it. When I try to delete it my CPU usage spikes up to 100% and the deletion dialog box freezes without ever deleting anything. At first, I thought that another process may be using the file, so I opened up process explorer to no avail. Could someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction to fix this problem?

edit: Sorry, forgot to post specs.

Answer:High CPU usage when deleting file

Hi lostguy,

May I ask, how big is the file? Instead of deleting the video file, have you tried transferring it to another medium, like a USB thumb drive?

Greetings,
I recently set up a Perfmon data collector set to monitor two PCs we use for Data Collection of a R&D test system (we were occasionally having test system software inexplicably hang and wanted to see if it corresponded with any system event, resource utilization
etc.). We selected our test system C:/Data folder as the save location for the report and let it run. After stopping the data collector I went to view the report and found it created a folder for itself  along the lines of C:/Data/MachineName_TimeStamp_Etc.
However, it had also deleted every other folder and file within C:/Data which included all our test data CSV files which were actively being written too by the test software. Bummer.
Is this a normal behavior for Perfmon and I jsut didn't read the fine text closely enough when saving the report? It seems like one heck of a bug, but I thought I would see if anyone else had insight into it.
Thanks for your time,
Sam

Hi,

Thank you for WindowsSeven forums. I have just registered but during the last 6 months or so I have used the resources provided here - particularly the tutorials - to set up my Wndows Home Premium x64 system.

Looking at one of the tutorials: System Protection Restore Points - Delete
I have a couple of questions I hope someone can help me with.

Options 3 and 4 of the tutorial cover deleting system restore points selectively with CCleaner or System Restore Explorer.

My questions about doing such selective deletions of restore points with these utilities are:
1. Does it actually save any disk space; or is it simply cleaning up a list so that after the deletion of unneeded ones only the restore points considered useful are presented in the list - whereas system restore disk usage is left unaffected.
2. Is there any risk in deleting restore points at various arbitrary points; are they interdependent? Will deleting some cause a risk of others not working?

Essentially, if it is possible, I would like to keep restore points done at the begiining (after drivers, windows updates and installation of programs etc.) and delete the remaining ones except the most recent one - but I only want to do this to save significant disk space by the selective deletion.

Thank you.

Answer:Deleting System Restore Points Selectively - disk usage

Deleting the points does recover disk space. You can see it with
WinDirStat - Windows Directory Statistics

You can use this shortcut to make restore points with your comment

System Restore Point Shortcut

Makes it easier to know what happened. For instance before installing a program I may use it and comment "before installing zappos untried newsreader" or whatever.

I would not only rely on restore points. I've heard a thorough disk defrag can mess them up. It's good to also image your system to an external drive. You can find free imaging programs.
There's a list here:

Free Hard Disk Backup and Restore, Hard Disk Image and Cloning Utilities (thefreecountry.com)

But you may find some additional if you search the Software sub-forum on thiis forum.

I tried oc'ing to 4.5 ghz, didnt fix the problem.
Basically, in some games i get high cpu usage and at the same time low gpu usage.
My system is i7 3770k, gtx1070, 16 gb ddr3 ram, corsair hx850i psu.
In witcher 3 novigrad, which is cpu heavy, i sometimes get gpu usage at like 70% which causes stutter, at the same time cpu usage is around 85%.
When i leave town i get 95-99% gpu usage again and my cpu usage drops.
Dying light same, if cpu usage is high my gpu usage drops.
Battlefield 1 is normally fine in 95-99% gpu usage, except st quentin, but others reported this too.
What can this be? My cpu shouldnt be bottlenecking. Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.

Greetings,

I formatted my computer, and after installing windows 7 again, my physical memory in task manager is very high, and cpu keeps jumping up and down.

I looked at the processes tab, but noticed absolutely nothing taking abnormal memory (private working set.) Then moved on to performance tab> resource monitor, and found svchost (I think it was netsvcs in parenthesis,) hogging all the memory. After ending the process, I still have had high memory usage, and surprisingly, do not see a process anywhere in task manager with high numbers next to it, so I have no idea what's happening.

I have noticed that my windows 7 folder keeps increasing in size, currently about 26 gigs, and a helper told me that it's normal because the updates in windows 7 have a different compression method than windows 8 and after, however when I had previously installed windows 7, fully updated... my folder size was normal, so I assume it can be done?

I originally posted in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs section, however I did not find malware on my computer, so unless it's very new malware, I am certain windows 7 is causing this problem.

For antivirus, I am currently using a free trial of Norton.

Advice?

P.S. This is probably better for the hardware section, but can constant high physical memory, and cpu usage ruin my hardware? I am avoiding using things that take up high cpu and memory right now, and it's currently about 1.2 g... Read more

To help her out, I got rid of porn, viruses, and spyware using:

Ad-Aware, AVG spyware and AV free versions, Trend Micro House Call, Spybot

I checked the task manager, and has constant 100% CPU usage, avg memory usage

The system runs, but apps open slow, so I tried some freeware reg cleaners:

CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, Wise Registry cleaner

After hours of searching on web, the fixes I found don't work, so I give up. Can someone help. My friend doesn't have the money to pay someone to fix this, and she was so happy to get a new computer.

Hi all, hope you can help.

Every so often, when listening to online radio streams/playing games etc my computer just goes crazy. I get a lot of hard drive 'chatter' and lots of fan noise and everything slows to a crawl. My music will start jumping and skipping and there is a long delay between me clicking the mouse and the action happening. It happens when no other programs (for example, my AV/AS) are due to scan. When I look at my Task Manager the two biggest eaters of memory usage are fm.exe (game, it normally eats a load but makes no substantial difference to the comp speed) and ekrn.exe (something to do with my AV, not quite sure what it actually does though)

I am running Windows MCE SP3 and am using NOD32 anti-virus and Sunbelt CounterSpy anti-spyware. The definitions on both are updated daily and both scan daily. I have also defragged the comp and do so weekly. The other programs I use are CCleaner and Glary Utilities, both fairly regularly to clean up my comp when I was working as an internet researcher, but less often now.

I do not get any error messages/BSOD's or actual freezes. Everything just slows right down. Could I have picked up a form of malware/virus that my AV/AS isn't picking up? Could one of my previous spring cleans have been too aggressive? Or is it simply too much load for my comp (2 year old Dell)? It is 3MHz, 1G RAM, kinda your bog standard media comp from 2007.

Your thoughts and advice are greatly appreciated as it's starting ... Read more

Hi,

I just bought my brand new laptop and have loaded Vista Ultimate 32bit onto it for about 5 days. I noticed something unusual about Vista's CPU usage while idle in the task manager as well as the Resource monitor.

I have attached two pictures to show my problem. Notice that my CPU usage is always at about 40-60% on both of my cores. However, the average CPU usage per process shows that it should actually occupy about 15% to at most 20% (by adding up all the highest average CPU for processes in the first picture). The second picture I attached shows the current CPU usage sorted by max usage, and again it does not add up to 41%!

Although at 40-60% usage, I do not notice any major performance impacts, as both cores are not loaded to the max. However, I do notice Vista chewing up more battery than needed when I have my laptop running off batteries. Because the max frequency for the processor would always need to be raised to around 60% even when idle (instead of say... 10-20%).

I have searched online for various problems relating to high CPU usage, and most of the responses are about tracing down which process is the culprit. Well, this is where I'm stumped because it all does not add up! According to the process view, everything is normal but my system resources are still get constantly chewed up by something invisible it seems.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated at this point!

Answer:Vista Ultimate 32: high CPU usage does not correspond with process usage

Posting two more image to show this problem from the task manager...

Notice that the system idle process is 84, and yet CPU usage is 42? I always thought that:
CPU usage + idle process = 100?

Perhaps things are done differently with dual core processors? This is my first dual core so I'm not sure. The second image shows how both my cores are being used roughly equally, at around 50%.

Hardware/full build: Core i7-6700K 4.0GHz Quad-Core, GeForce GTX 1080 8GB GAMING X 8G, Node 804 MicroATX Mid Tower - System Build - PCPartPicker
My strongest suspect is memory, however HeavyLoad ran for 4+ hours maxing both memory and CPU before the system decided to restart. I also ran a Memtest86+ which passed multiple times. I still suspect a memory problem though as I am unable to boot the system with 4 sticks installed unless I have the XMP profile already activated. 3 sticks is fine, 2 sticks is fine, 1 stick is fine, different ports are fine. I tried different sticks in different slots and no change.
Tonight I am getting a lot of the following errors in the event log. This is while the computer was remaining idle on the login screen. I'm running WoW now and there are none to be seen.

Hi guys, hope you can help me please. I'm not too computer savvy so sorry if I'm missing something important or I say something dumb. I'm really frustrated and I'm trying my best to learn and solve this problem.
So I bought this Vaio with Core i5-3210M, 4Gb Ram, Windows 8 64 bit. I had really high hopes for it, coming from an i3. For the first few weeks it worked fine, but then it started to freeze while watching movies. Then it started happening all the time, and the cooling fan became consistently noisy for working at full capacity.
I was used to opening task manager on older systems when this happened to see if there was a non-responding program and force it closed, so I noticed Task Manager offers some more features in Win 8. Here, I see that CPU usage is high, staying always around 70% and from time to time reaching 100. At this moment, the process taking the biggest slice is called VCS System Tray with 58%.
What's perhaps more concerning, is that Disk usage is almost constantly on 100%. And by this I mean it reaches 100 and stays there for long periods of time, perhaps up to 20 minutes, then it falls down a few seconds and up again to 100. During this time the computer is excruciatingly painful to use. To even open a program takes forever. When this happens, it seems that Chrome is at the top of the list of processes with most disk usage, with about 1-2Mbps, but this sometimes changes and the list can be led by System, Utorrent, Octoshape, VCS System Tray, Communication... Hi, welcome to the forums,
Go to Device manager(right click bottom left corner), uninstall the "VAIO care" driver, get the new driver from Sony support:Sony eSupport - Computers - Support
Install and see whether it helps, check your system for virus infections with Malwarebytes as well.

Every 10-40 minutes, the application I'm currently working in [whither it be skype, L4D2, or firefox] becomes unresponsive, and after a minute or two, the window turns white, notifying me that it's not responding. This unresponsiveness quickly spreads to other open processes, rendering them frozen as well. I can still use the mouse, and it appears rainmeter still responds [updates, showing barely any CPU usage].

Steps I've taken to try and resolve this:
Using only one main program, still does it
turning the computer off and on again
Memtest is clean
chkdisk passes
MBAM/MSE scans return nothing
defragged
no memory overflows that I can see

While troubleshooting, I noticed that during the 'fit of unresponsiveness' the disk usage light on my tower is solid, but when I looked at the disk usage in the resource monitor, no processes whatsoever were using it [screenshot related]

If any more specifications are needed, I'll be happy to elaborate.
Thanks!

Answer:Frequent unresponsiveness, 100% hardware disk usage, 0% software usage

It could be indexing. What if you turn off indexing just as an experiment?

Recently my computer has been plagued by High CPU and general malware. I believe i've removed most of the malware. But I can't seem to fix the issue with the dllhost.exe and multiple explorer.exe running.

First i ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then I ran Malwarebytes Anti-Rootkit. Found lots of issues. all resolved. Ran them recently again and no malware was found. Still have the explorer.exe issue though.

Then I used combofix, but it changed nothing.

In the meanwhile i've just been ending the explorer.exe processes that take high CPU. This allows me to temporarily use my computer before they start popping up again.

Answer:dllhost.exe, multiple explorer.exe's, high CPU usage, and memory usage

I don't know what you need me to post. Hopefully this might provide some insight.

Ok, I am literally KILLING myself over this!

I installed Windows 7 64Bit over XP around a month ago and it was so good that I recommended it to my brother who was previously on XP too. We got him a copy of the 32bit version as he has only 2gb of memory, and he installed it on his machine. However, he constantly had high CPU and RAM usage (Even though no programs were obviously taking it all up in his task manager) and it was making his computer sluggish and slow. Everything was freezing and hanging and it was a nightmare.

I spent a day looking all over the net to find out the problem, but could not fix it at all, no matter what the hell I tried. So he reverted back to Windows XP. (A nice waste of money on Windows 7.) His Windows XP now runs smoothly and is all as it was.

Suddenly today, after my brother connected to my Windows 7 homegroup (or workgroup rather) through his Windows XP machine, my computer got the EXACT same problem as he had ages ago! I have been browsing Google all day downloading s**t, changing things in my computer, trying EVERY possible fix that people have suggested and that sound legit. Nothing works!

So now all of a sudden, my computer is sluggish, games are jumpy and jittery, video rendering times are slooooooow.

Here is a picture of my resource monitor:
You can see the physical memory usage being at 45%. I've ordered the memory usage of each service in highest to lowest.
I just CANT see where the problem is!
(I've tried leaving my homegroup to see... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 random CPU usage and high physical memory usage!!!

I can tell you what is probably causing your problems. AVG.
When you are looking at memory, do not sort by Working set, sort by Hard faults.
Hard faults is what causes things to slow down. Plus you have plenty of memory not to worry about usage.

Hi,

Just yesterday I realized that my computer was acting super slowly and I even received a blue screen of death out of nowhere. Upon checking my processes list,I found many suspicious processes that continued to multiply when I tried to end them. These included: PresentationHost.exe, msdtc.exe, dllhost.exe, prevhost.exe, cmd.exe, msiexec.exe, conhost.exe, and even a notepad.exe that seems to be invisible. A malware is most likely behind this, and is causing my computer to perform very slowly and be almost unusable, I have managed to run FRST, but Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not even opening for me. In addition, this multiplying issue seems to only occur when I am connected to the internet. I would highly appreciate some help!

Question: Data Usage

Was hoping of some help. When I go into my network settings and click data usage, it tells me 232 GB of ethernet, but when I open up the usage details, the app usage only totals 40 GB when added up. Can anyone explain why there would be such a huge discrepancy?

Just for context, my provider said I was using 50 to 100 GB for the last year and a half and now I am using 225-250 GB/month the last two months. I'm trying to figure out why.

Answer:Data Usage

Welcome to the TenForums @ehastings

Question: Data Usage

I have just bought a Dell Inspirion . I live in Mexico and use a Telcel 3G internet stick. This connects to internet using cell towers. I pay a monthly payment for 3Gigs of data . I can monitor my data useage by going to Networking and shareing
in control panel , click on my connections under active netwoks. When downloading upgrades, or veiwing a web page (surfing the net) I can in real time watch my DATA being used ,,,,,,,,,,,Problem is when NO downloading is being done by me for
example on surfing no upgrades sometimes I can watch the data being use (and quite a bit (155MB in ten minutes) way too much. Now this Dell is WiFi loaded ,So is ther any way someone can connect to my computer via my WiFi?... I use the STICK on my desk top (no WiFi) and no problem. Would apprecate any Help

Answer:Data Usage

I doubt that this is happening. But why don't you turn the WiFi off to be really sure.

And 155MBs for Windows updates is not unusual. I have seen as many as 700MBs with one batch of updates. If your Windows is still somewhat backlevel (which most new systems are), you will be getting a lot of those.

Have already done all the usual preliminaries, checked RAM, cleaned disc, removed unused programs, already running McAfee Suite, Ran Malwarebyte, if found nothing. Ran Registry Mechanic and let it fix problems. Rebooted, defragged, all the standard things. It's so slow that some things it just won't run at all.

Here's the PC specs and the HJT log is attached. Thanks!! Cassie

So I have an issue with my downloads folder. I have a Samsung 830 SSD as my main boot drive. 99% of my data is on a 640gb WD black drive. When I click on my downloads folder, which is stored on the WD drive, it takes a while to build up what is stored in the folder. I tried to click on the index setting for that specific folder, but I haven't found it to really work. Anyone have any suggestions?

I have been having a big problem the last week with my computer. Everything is running incredibly slow. I opened the windows task manager, and it has shown very high CPU usage, often fluctuating between 80% and 100%, though sometimes staying between about 5-20%. The page file usage has been conistently high, the lowest being in the mid-600 kbs, while most often staying around 720 or 730 kbs. These patterns seem to be unaltered by the amount of programs I have running (the problem occurs even when there are absolutely no programs running) or whether I'm on the internet or not. I am very ignorant when it comes to computers, but I suspected it was some sort of spyware problem. However, after scanning with Norton 360, Spybot's Search and Destroy, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, and Microsoft Defender, only a few low-level threats showed up, and fixing them led to no improvement in my computer's performance. The slow functioning seems to be directly related to the times when the CPU usage is high.

My OS is Microsoft XP. My processor is 1.73 GHz. I have 504 MB of RAM. I will attach my HijackThis log below. I hope I haven't forgotten any necessary information, but I would appreciate any help you can offer. I'm becoming very frustrated.

I have the following config-> Windows XP Professional SP2 which I have been using for the last 3 years.-> Updated Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 running for the last 1 year.-> No new software were installed in the last month that I can recall of.Suddenly I get this problem:1. I ran an application one day (it was winrar), and nothing starts.2. Task manager shows CPU usage as 50 (I have dual core), while memory usage remains at 84k3. After a few days vlcplayer.exe started giving the same problem-> So, I reinstalled windows (formatted my C drive and installed a fresh copy). -> Everything worked fine. I was using Irfanview.exe with no problems, but then one day again, IrfanView.exe did not start. Same problem : CPU usage was 50% while memory remained really low.-> I uninstalled it from C:/program files and installed a new copy in C:/program files --- this did not solve the problem-> I uninstalled it again from C:/program files and installed to D:/ Now it works fine...-> But now again I got the same problem with media player.exeI have tried a virus scan with Kaspersky (updated) and a scan with spybot. They both came out to be clean.Any ideas?I cant reinstall Windows as that did not solve the problem.

Answer:CPU usage increases to max (while memory usage doesnt) when I run a application

I dont know if this helps: I read somewhere about creating a drive image for easy backup. So I tried DriveImageXML, but it gave an error regarding CRC check which related to bad sectors i suppose. I ran a scan disk before installing a fresh copy of Windows. Obviously, this hasnt helped either.

HELP!My computer has become ridiculously slow, taking minutes to do nothing. The computer is quite old (4-5 years), but has had XP and MS Office installed fom Day 1. I have not added any other software which might explain the slowness. When the computer is slow, if I Ctrl:Alt:Delete, the CPU usage is sometimes very high (80%) or above, but not always, however, the Page file usage history is always at least 80/90% of capacity (value reads as nearly 400Mb).What is the page file usage history? Is this likely to be why my computer is slow and can any settings be changed, or do I have to bin the computer and buy one which works? Thanks

I have 50GB of hard drive space reporting as unusable, seems to be the system restore data. Disk Cleanup reports the max limit for system restore is set to 7GB, but the actual used is 50GB. How can the actual exceed the max quota? I deleted all previous restore points, and did a disk cleanup, but nothing changes.

Hi,
I have a i7 3770k at 3.9 ghz, so stock with turbo boost.
Like i said i trid overclocking, didn't help.
nvcp is set to prefer maximum performance and i'm playing at 1440p 144hz.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi folks

I posted this problem at Spyware Specific forum, but was advised to post here.

Recently when I use RealProducer Plus v.10 to convert mpeg2 clips to rmvb, it takes a long time to do so. When I checked, RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage - as much as 94-95%, causing total CPU usage to be 95-98%. I have scanned with Norton and Adaware - all ok. Then I used Spy Sweeper - it found and cleared Csmin. Howveer, the problem still remains when I use RealProducer.

CPU usage without using RealProducer

CPU usage using RealProducer

Will my CPU will be damaged if CPU usage is so high?

Please help to take a look at my .exe processes. Are they OK?
What is PQV2iSvc.exe?

Please advise. Thanks a lot!

Answer:RealProducer utilises over 90% CPU usage? Will high CPU usage damage CPU?

To answer your question about PQV2iSvc.exe is part of Power Quest drive image and Norton Ghost drive backup software.

Converting video formats can be a resource intensive process. Unless your system temps are getting really high there shouldn't be any damage to the CPU.

For over about a month now my DSL internet has been dropping randomly. It disconnects completely for a few seconds to fifteen minutes, then picks back up. This happens usually every twenty or so minutes, it's very random, so this is just a mode. The speed itself is not affected (when it's on, it's fine). I've been able to determine that the reason is somewhere on my desktop.

It's a HP Envy with intel i7 3.40 GHz. About a year and three months old, and using windows 8. I typically use google chrome for browsing, only occasionally firefox. I am connected to my internet wirelessly, which is broadcasted from the router a floor beneath me. The router is plugged into a phone jack, shared with the house phone (no problems with the phone what-so-ever). Tbaytel is my provider, and I use Kaspersky antivirus. Network details; Speed-72.0 mbps. Sent-13,936,*** and counting. Received- 244,015,*** and counting. Security type is WPA2-Personal, Encryption type is AES and we have a security key set up (That we recently changed to see if it would help, and of course it didn't).

This is what's scary;

Processes under the task manager brought up nothing, but looking at the Wi-fi under the Performance tab showed that something is definitely going on. The amount of Wi-fi usage spikes HUGE amounts! But at the time I took this screenshot, I was only running an antivirus full scan (which turned up nothing), google chrome on this site, and had both the task ... Read more

Answer:Internet cutting out from MASSIVE usage, but usage not accounted for.

About your new router...
How long have you been using it or since when did you got it?
How long has it been opened? Have you tried powercycling it? (Turning it off and then on)

Also, Have you tried testing it while your laptop is directly plugged in on your router with an ethernet cable? (Try speedtest.net)

Does this happen to other of your computers or device?
Does Tbaytel do line testing when you called them?

So on Saturday of last week my PC started to run slow. I open up task manager to check what was going on and I am greeted with it showing me that I have very high CPU usage, and constant capped-out disk usage.
Over the course of the past few days I have reinstalled Windows 10, updated drivers, completely formatted my previous hard-drive, and just today I received a new SSD. However, my problem STILL persists, and I'm all out of ideas on what I need to in order to solve this.

My Motherboard is an ASUS Z97-P with an Intel i5-4690K processor. If you need more specifications, or a program to be run, then I would be happy to do so.

For further information, the system ran normally when booting from a Windows 8.1 hard-drive, and did have a blip of normal performance on Windows 10, but resumed misbehaving when the computer was re-started.

Answer:Constant 100% Disk Usage, 60-80% CPU usage. Both happen when idle.

in Task Manager sort by CPU usage and see what apps are responsible.

Hey guys. Nice to meet you all I currently own a Y580 with the nvidia gt -660m graphics card.I have windows 7 home premium version installed.  Ever since I've bought this laptop (2013 December), I've always had a problem. The graphics card (gt-660m) stops operating after the laptop has been turned on for 2~3 hours.I have a gadget showing the temperature of my Gt-660m. It is normally 30~40degrees celcius but after 2~3 hours of using my laptop, it suddenly turns to 0 degrees. That is when my laptop won't detect Gt-660m. It operates with the HD4000 instead. The funny thing is that when I shutdown my laptop and turn it on again, it detects the Gt-660m like there wasn't any kind of problem.  I've been turning my laptop on / off whenever my computer couldn't detect GT-660m but now I'm getting sick of this annoying process. I formatted my harddisk yesterday and installed all the newest drivers (both drivers from lenovo homepage and nvidia homepage) after re-installing windows 7 but the problem still remains. Anybody out there who can help me? ;(

Answer:Graphics card stopped after few hours of usage..

30-40^c is really low for when its in use. can advise on how you got the temperature readings? for me i like using speedfan. its reporting that both my GPUs operate at 65^c on load. It gets higher in my non air conditioned room though.

Just wondering if anyone else has been getting warning letters from Cox internet on being
over the limit on data usage for the billing cycle. I have been getting these warning emails almost every month.

We are allowed 300gb on our current plan and are at 607gb at the end of our billing cycle.
Even if I move up to the top plan it only gives me 400gb.

We have 5 people living in the house using the internet with games Netflix etc.

Our internet seemed slow this weekend. Are they throttling down the speeds on me?
After I rebooted the modem and router it seemed fine.

Was wondering if this has ever happened to anyone. I am on a windows 7 desktop.

-I was away on vacation but noticed that my wifi data usage was way up in the month (~350gb) despite no one being home to use it. I did leave the comp on though.
-I tried to do a full scan using my McAfee program but it crashes before completion. The comp has been running slow for a while. The quick scans do not detect anything.
-i can still run programs, web browse etc with no clear signs of foul play. Although the completed freezes up quite a bit to the point i need to restart.

does any have any tips on this type of a problem? Is getting a different virus protection the answer?

Thanks in advance

I used Dell's Optimize System program on Sunday.  On Monday my computer used 15 gigs of data and I had nothing running other than Firefox.  In one hour this morning it has used almost a gig.  If this is what optimization is I don't want it.  Any suggestions on how to disable it?

Answer:Excessive data usage

Amount of data used on 4g network has nothing to do with Optimization.
If your 4g is full speed you can use up your data limit in as little as 45 minutes of use.

Not sure if I am putting this in the right place, but here goes.
i have 50gig usuage allowance from my ISP. I am lucky if I alone use 500MB a day, since son has moved back home, we have bumped our usage from I think we were on 12gb a month for just 2 of us. anyway last month was our 1st month at 50gb, at the end of the month we still had 30gb of usage left to play with. this month, however, we have used 36gb in 10 days, one day was 6.4gb alone. I now know what it takes to use that much and I am beside myself wondering wtf has happened to all that usage. my son video chats with people on msn. besides that there is nothing diffent, usual for me I dont do much different than i always do, my partner rarely uses the internet. I hook my phone up to it wirelessly when trying to sleep lol.
we do have a wep key, we just changed that, umm can someone really be stealing it even tho we have that key? Its meant to be a secure network. I am seriously pissed off, because at this rate our internet will slowed within days. and that will annoy me lol...so anyone got any ideas??? sorry its long but figured full story would be better than a half assed one

I am wondering if there is a program that i could run on my computer in the background that could tell me how my data is being used. I have Xfinity/Comcast, and im limited to 300GB a month and if i go over i get charged for every 50gb extra. what im asking is, is there a program that says ive used 10gb of data by streaming videos, 100Gb's of downloads, and so on and so fourth. i believe that xfinity is screwing me out of my data as ive used basically 200gb's in the first 15 days of a month and all i have done is watch youtube videos, and play games.

any insight into this would be greatly appreciated, and if this program doesnt exist would it be possible to create this program??

thanks.

Answer:Data Usage Program??

Try Glasswire firewall.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/glasswire.html

You can turn off the firewall element and just use it for the stats, which are really awesome. This program shows EVERYTHING down to the exact process and how much it has used for the day, week, month...the whole thing. Also it's easy to find information.

The firewall does work with Private Firewall on I know, so I assume it will run side by side with W7-10 firewall on, too. However, the firewall in the free version of Glasswire is basically just a one click block an IP type thing. There isn't a dialog for any deeper sorts of rules. If you want to turn it off, it's Firewall tab and the button is top left to toggle the firewall on/off...

Hi
Win7
My data usage thru ISP has increased a large amount. From 30G per month to 100 G per month. Not sure what it is.
Have router with 2 wireless laptops and 1 internet capable tv (cable and not used much)
My ISP has proved several dates and times from last week for data usage of about 900M to 2.5G. How do I find this on Win7

I would like to know with say the dates/time supplied how to ascertain which laptop was used and what the IP address was the data obtained from.

Possible that someone has used my wireless but I do have the security on the router (I think).

Can I find this in Win7 rec ords ? or what to use to find out.
Thanks
Charles Harris

Answer:Unexplained Hi Usage of Data

If you have no security on your wireless connection then you will have no idea who has been connecting to your service. This is a very dangerous position to be in and I should set WAP seurity straight away. Remember if someone sits outside you premises connected to your wireless system you are liable for whatever is downloaded, well you would be in the UK and I have every reason to believe that this is also the case in New Zealand!
Do you know how to set the security system in your router. If not thepost back here with the make and model of your router and one of us will find the IP address that you need to get access!

In Settings > Network & Internet > Data Usage : data usage is monitored this day to one month back , this is entirely useless since usually people try to monitor their usage since last bill , windows 8.1 allowed resetting of counter in any specific day so the counter can report useful data you can use , through researching and an earlier post I got the understanding that this is the new vision of Microsoft of how Data Usage should work..

Now the question , for sure Data usage must be using some registry key to constantly store data usage per day to achieve this trick of collecting data use over a month , so resetting should be as easy as deleting that key and allowing it rebuild from that point forward , so anybody know the path to that key or went the extra mile and did the reg file to delete it ?

thanks in advance and happy holidays

Question: Extreme data usage

This morning my wife's Windows 10 laptop started using huge amounts of bandwidth. It looked like "host process for setting synchronization" was using the data. I ran malwarebytes and it cam up clean but the AVG popped up a warning for chrome_update.bat She picked "protect me", rebooted and no warnings come up but after 15 minutes the data usage goes through the roof again.
I have it set for a metered connection, but something is using gigs of bandwidth

What version and build are you running? Microsoft is rolling out the Anniversary Update which is about 3 to 4GB.

The Anniversary version is 1607.

My computer just crashed and i had to Refresh. I chose to try to recover my data and when the computer was done refreshing only some of the files i had were saved. Almost all of my software was gone and missing so i just figured i would have to re install it all. Part way though, it said i had no more data and could not figure out why but when i went to my computer, the data/os said it was full and was highlighted in red. I feel that my data is still there but when going into the folders the files and programs don't show up. Anyone have a fix! I've lost a lot of data and i need to know how to ether recover it or just forgo and empty it so i can begin to re-install.

Hey guys, I have a data capped mobile internet. With windows 8.1, I could set the connection I'm on to a metered connection, and a simple click on the connection would show how much data I've used, and then I could reset it every billing cycle. In 10, I found the option in settings to turn it into a metered connection, but I see nothing that displays where the usage actually is. There is a free app I found from microsoft that does the job, but it has a lot of adds all over it and it's just a lot to look at it. Is there a simple, quick way of checking, or will I have to use that app?

Thanks!

I have a 4g hotspot I use for my laptop. The other day I added 5gb to it. Usually that lasts me about a month. I used about 1gb the next day, which is a lot for me in one day. I know that's all I used, based on what I was doing. The next day I find out I'm out of data and my laptop tells me I've used 4.82 GB. Is there any way I can find out the source of this data usage? The service provider couldn't tell me anything.

It doesn't appear to be auto updates, far as I can tell, and those shouldn't total 3+ GB anyway.

Answer:mysterious 4gb data usage in one day

Tree Size Free may help you find the data that was downloaded (if it was saved and is in one or few folders/files).

If you are running Windows 7 or 8.1 and reserved Windows 10 maybe yesterday was your lucky day for downloading it.

Can you point me to the best fixes to stop Win 10 using so much data, no videos being watched, maybe looking a photos on usedguns, too much, not much else.

Answer:Data usage, windows 10.

In what regard? Are you referring to disk activity. how much memory is taken up or something else? As for as a good deal of memory being taken off of the top you will tend to see that more with the 64bit Windows compared to the 32bit since the 32bit does far more swapping out data to the paging file used as virtual memory while the 64bit preloads more into the active ram. That more or less preloads to some extent the most often used programs for a more efficient start up when going to run something.

If you feel something is still grabbing too much out of the resources the Startup tab found in the Task manager is the place to go to look over your startup items and besides any essentials you can easily disable any that appear to be "memory hogs"? being one of the old school terms there.

First before deciding to disable any a look in the Memory tab will generally indicate just what is taking the most memory. The Performance and Resource meters now seen in 10 can also be a help at times in trying to determine just what is grabbing up the resources if this is software related.

Hello
I have a contract with my ISP for 60 gig. a month but my wife uses Skype MSN and also a Chinese program called QQ to have conversations (Video and voice and sometimes only voice) with family in China.Does anyone know how much data is being transfered in each dirrection during 1- a voice only call 2- a webcam and voice call with any of these programs?
I have Googled the question, but it seems that whoever gives answers has a moto in mind which is (Why make it easy when it's easy to make it hard). It seems to me that it would be easy to answer ( for a 1 hour video and voice call, it is so much and a one hour voice call , it is so much)
So please if anyone can answer my question without trying to give me a course on data transferring,it would be appreciated.
Thanks

Question: High data usage

I have a modem that fits into USB port and an Internet provider (here in Africa) from which you can buy airtime. For the last year and a half I have not had a problem with data usage, but the last few days, my machine has been consuming data at a rate 10x that of normal. That means using 400MB in 10-15 minutes with no programs or applications open, just the desktop! The problem is not the modem (I have tried it on other laptops), apparently it is only my laptop. How can I fix this problem?

hi, i recently have had a weird problem with my lan connection on a particular pc

when i transfer files (copy or move) out to another pc within the lan, cpu usage goes up big time, but incoming data transfer doesnt seem to cause that high cpu problem; data transfer among HD's within the pc is normal until it's going out of the pc (regardless of which hd is coming out)

all my pcs ar on win2k pro; this particular pc is a p4 3.2 ghz prescott, mobo is asus p4p800se with onboard gigabit nic from marvel; i have a pretty fast cable connection but i have no issue with internet speed; i'm just trying to figure out what causes the bottleneck that causes cpu usage to max out and make all other tasks temporarily frozen

i tried upgrading from the etherfast switch to a gigabit switch but no difference; i tried adding a second adapter while the onboard nic is still enabled, no difference; thinking may be it's the nic going south, i bought a netgear gigabit nic and disabled the onboard nic but still the same problem;

please advise as this is really bugging me; it used to not have this problem before; just started recently

oh, and when cpu peaks while transferring data out, i look at the processes through process explorer, these 2 processes are the main culprit (explorer.exe and DPCs) and at times system process as well
thanks very much

Answer:data transfer out to another pc within lan causes cpu usage to go up to 100% lately

I'd check for a corrupt file stored somewhere.

Since you download or move files you could have a corrupt file stored somewhere causing this.

Read Handsome Prints post #6 at http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=74137

Or you may have some spyware or other baddies causing it.

Question: Huge Data Usage

I am using a Lumia 1520 on AT&T with Windows 8.1 Developer build. My phone is using a lot of data and I have no idea where it is coming from. I turned almost every app off running in the background. I think it is Cortana that is causing it, but I haven't tested it. Any ideas why my phone is using a lot of data every time I turn my data on? Thanks.

Answer:Huge Data Usage

Define "a lot".

Hi all
One help needed. Now I am trying bitdefender(before ESET).I noticed that some thing is using my internet connection always.but it doesn't show up in firewall's network activity.I had similar type of problem before due to BITS service. But now even BITS is disabled.I am puzzled that BD's firewall doesn't even tell what application using my internet.I can't afford this because since my internet connection is limited in data usage.I think this not always happens but mostly. At the time of typing this thread this hadn't occur.
U can see from the image attached by me that in bytes received it is showing as 254.3 KB/S but in Out/s and In/s it shows as 0 B/s

Answer:unknown data usage!

Word of advice: use Comodo FW or Zonealarm to first identify what exactly is using your internet. If with any of those 2 installed nothing is found, then you will need to start digging deeper.

I am on the Rogers Heavy Flex Mobile Internet plan, and it has worked great. Until I we went 15 GB over the limit, we cut down our usage, but then I was playing Xbox and a friend told me I could download a game without wifi. I foolishly believed him, and turned the Xbox on offline mode but the download wouldn't begin, so I put the Xbox back on online mode and forgot to pause the 68 GB game download... Two days later I found out and discovered the overage charge would be close to 400$ + the 145$ cost of the plan. It's going to be very hard to afford, so I was wondering if there was a way I could cut the overage price down... Maybe they'll realize it was an accident if I call them?

Answer:Accidental Data Over Usage

Calling them to explain the situation and see if you can work out some sort of agreement is the only thing that we can suggest.

Question: Network Usage Data

Hi!
I have a Netgear Router. We are 6 people sharing a common internet connection. One person is leeching a lot of data. Is there any way by which we can track the data usage by each laptop? Is there some setting in the router which helps me find this?

Answer:Network Usage Data

Depends on the router, but most SOHO routers don't have much traffic data by connection.

Hello,

In the past month or so I have encountered an issue with my computer where shortly after startup, the CPU and memory usage both go to 100% and remain there the entire time my computer is running. Applications now take a very long time to load, and there is even significant lag when moving the mouse or typing. The computer will also emit intermittent system beeping sounds and I frequently get a Windows error that pops up with a message along the lines of "Powershell Unexpectedly Stopped."

I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit w/ SP1. ESET and Malwarebytes scans both turned up clean.
Any help that you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

I am having a serious issue with email using a very large amount of data. According to data sense the culprit is my GoDaddy Email. I had it checking for updates every 15 minutes due to it being a business email. In a 30 day period it has used 3.5 gigs.
Here is the kicker, I has a 900 prior to this 920 and had it set up the same way plus I had location turned on with a weather app running in background and live tile and in a one month period I never used more than 1.0 gig?
My business partners who also use the same email with android only used 200 MB in the same period with the same configuration.
I am beginning to wonder if this phone has a defect of some nature, has anyone else experienced this issue?
Has anyone had this happen. Thanks for any input

Answer:Excessive Data Usage on Email?

Have you tried deleting and reconnecting the email account, just to see if that makes a difference?
Out of curiosity, is this email account pop, imap or eas?

I wasn't sure where to put this post, but I guess it could be considered a security issue.

So far I've been asked by Microsoft, Hewlett/Packard and one of the Add-Ons (I forget the name of it right now but when you click yes the little dog wags it's tail) for FireFox, if I would allow them to collect anonymous usage data so that it could assist improving the software.

Before I joined this forum I would always click no when asked this because I just didn't like the idea of having any information of mine being sent somewhere. However, I have this desire to help make the internet a better place (sound corny?) and one way to do that would be to help companys and people who strive towards that same goal.

With that being said, does this pose a security risk? Should you absolutely trust the company before you click yes? Does anyone else share this information?

Thanks,
Richard

Answer:Collecting Anon Usage Data

Hello Richard,

If you trust the company and software, then it is usually ok if you would like to help them improve their software. The key thing is to read the agreement to see what information they will be collecting for this.

I would never absolutely trust anything though.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

I switched from - The Weather Channel - to AccuWeather with no other changes to the phone and my data usage jumped significantly?
Any thoughts to why?

Answer:AccuWeather - Data Usage Increase

I have that same app installed and i don't have that problem, maybe is still running in the background and that way keeps refreshing the tile with weather updates... hence more data consumption. Try to disable it in the battery saver in WP8.1 / Background task in WP8.

My Cox internet data usage has been out of control lately, despite no one's streaming habits changing, and I'd like to compare my own logs to Cox's data meter. Unfortunately, I'm using an older Belkin router that doesn't offer data tracking in the admin page, and we have far too many devices here to track individually.

Is there another way to monitor total data usage through my router?

Answer:Monitor Data Usage in Windows 8.1

Your router/gateway should show. As for what goes through the network connection. Task Manager will show it. Also if you open up the Network adapter and look in Status. See Checking the wireless connection speed of your computer As for converting Bytes to Mb/s. You can use this converter. Convert bytes to megabytes - Conversion of Measurement Units
