Headset microphone not recording when headset is default audio device

Question: Headset microphone not recording when headset is default audio device

HelloSo three days ago I wiped all of my drives and installed Windows 10. I have a Corsair Vengenace 2100 headset. I installed the realtek drivers from ASUS download section for my motherboard and then I installed the headset drivers. The problem is that my headset does not record anything through the microphone if I set it to be the default device for audio output. If I have my other computer speakers as the default output device my microphone works just fine. This goes for all the USBs in the back of the motherboard. The headset works just great if I plug in the wireless reciever in the front of the computer.I have tried to reinstall the drivers multiple times and checked a bunch of different settings in the sound manager in windows but nothing seems to work.Have also googled all kinds of things but nothing seems to relate to my problem.I do not have any external sound card plugged into my computer. Thanks for any help provided!

Preferred Solution: Headset microphone not recording when headset is default audio device

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Headset microphone not recording when headset is default audio device

Hi iBSOADed and welcome to TenForums,

First of all, you shouldn't have had to worry about installing any drivers after installing Windows 10 as Windows should do that automatically.

Have you tried using the Corsair Gaming Headset Setup program in the Downloads section of this page? Vengeance® 2100 Dolby 7.1 Wireless Gaming Headset

I have an Asus Intel core i5 laptop with Windows 10. I use a GXT 784 headset. While talking with friends, my headset suddenly stopped working and they couldn't hear me. After checking everything I could, I figures out that the headphones are working and I could hear things. However, despite being enabled, not muted, and at 100% volume, no green bars were appearing in the microphone section of the sound panel. I really have no idea how to fix it

I recently bought a Philips SHM7110U/10 headset to hopefully get better audio than my laptop's current microphone while recording with Fraps.

Fraps is currently using my laptop's default microphone, which can be changed by setting another microphone to the default. I read several articles on how to do this, but it turns out my headset does not appear on this list, only my laptop's default microphone.

Here is the recording devices list. The microphone seen in the picture is the built in microphone, which is not what I want to use.

Is there any way to fix this problem? I hope I have explained well enough. Thanks for reading.

PS. The headset is analogue if that helps. The site I bought it from can be found here: Buy Philips SHM7110U/10 3.5mm Stereo Overhead PC Headset and Microphone from our Gaming Headsets range -

Answer:Headset's microphone is not appearing on the recording devices list.

You should have more than just the microphone. RIGHT click in an empty area in that panel then LEFT click show disabled and disconnected devices. Does the headset mic show up now? Also does the System Mixer (could be called Stereo Mix) show up? If it does, make that the default recording device then whatever input you have should be heard. The System Mixer (or whatever its called in your PC) is also needed if you want to record streaming audio from the Internet.

I use Audacity and I would use WASAPI and did not need Stereo Mix enabled with my old headset. Now with my new headset I have to use Stereo Mix, WASAPI won't work anymore, pretty weird issue to say the least. I installed Asus Realtek Driver I record in Mono. My mic boost is at +0.0db. I plugged in green jack in headphone port to record system audio and it does not work. I had no issue with my old headset recording system audio. Now I have an issue with this new headset. Answer:My new headset not recording System Audio Help.

If you want to RECORD you use the PINK mic jack for the microphone part of the headset. The GREEN Jack is the Speaker out (for connecting a headset or speakers).

A computer mic requires +5VDC to operate. Only the PINK mic jack has the +5VDC on the "Ring" connection.

I've searched around a lot about this topic, but after hours and days of searching, I've found nothing to fix my problem. I have a headset that has speakers and a microphone (3.5mm jacks) that work fine, except when I'm trying to talk to someone using the microphone, they can hear the sounds coming from my headset (youtube videos, game sounds etc). I've tried installing the Realtek HD Audio Codec but it disappears after it finishes installing and after I restart (although it still remains in the Programs and Features uninstall page), the program files for it is empty with the exception of RtlUpd64.exe which doesn't do anything when executed and a few other files.
In device manager, the things I have under sound, video and game controllers are Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus and the Intel Display Audio. I've updated everything to the latest. Also, I recently system restored my computer and before I did I had IDT High Definition Audio Drivers, but after updating they were changed.
I think the problem is that stereo mix is enabled somewhere or something to do with my drivers as when I tried plugging my headset into my brother's computer, it worked fine (he has the Gigabyte Realtek Audio Manager thing and was able to adjust the stereo mix settings).
If there's a program or workaround to this, or how to disable the stereo mix like through registry or something, please let me know.

Answer:Headset mic recording sounds through headset?

You are correct, that is the usual cause of this problem. And aside from being set in the drivers, it can sometimes be set in the application (used for the communication).

That model does appear to use the IDT High-Definition (HD) Audio chipset. The problem is likely in the fact that you upgraded to Win10 and I don't see that HP supports nor supplies drivers for Win10 (I only see drivers for 7 and 8). Which means you are using generic drives supplied by Windows. The generic Windows drivers often work well enough to get hardware functional, but quite often don't support all hardware or all features of all hardware.

I cannot set my headset as my default audio device, it can only be set as default communications device. Whenever I try and set it as default device it just does nothing. I am currently using speakers with my headset and even when I unplug my speakers I still cannot set my headset as default device. This just happened very randomly one day as it was not doing before. My sound drivers are IDT High Definition Audio CODEC, NVIDIA High Definition Audio and NVIDIA Virtual Audio Device (Wave Extensible) (WDM, I have reinstalled and updated them all. I am using Windows 10, have an HP Envy Phoenix PC, and Razer Kraken Pro headset.

I can get it to pair and says it is paired but it says it is disconnected in the playback and recording settings dialog box. Is it possible my devices are too old the Bluetooth dongle is BT2.0 and the headset is a MotorolaT225 hands free speakerphone for my cellphone which works fine. If they are then what headset does work with win10 out of the box?

Answer:Can win10 use my bluetooth headset as my microphone/speaker device?

After you have it paired, click on search and type sound. Click to open the sound settings and see if your Bluetooth is listed. You may have to make it default to work. There you can also click and test it to make sure it works.

I have a almost broken headset, but the microphone still works fine, The microphone is connected on the wire right before the headset, Its not actually touching the headset itself.

Would this microphone still work if the headset was cut off?

Sorry but I can't manage to take a photo but

Answer:Will a Headset microphone still work if I cut it off the Headset?

Is the microphone actually supported by the headset, by that I mean when the set is on your head is the microphone carried close to your mouth so you have both hands free. If this is the case then cutting off the headset will mean the microphone will not have any way of being held near your mouth.
If you cut it off you will have to be very careful you don't cut the wires for the microphone & it's possible that there is a common return wire for the earpieces & the microphone in the form of a shielded cable, so it would be very difficult, but if you have skills in this area it could be done.

I use a headset with a built in microphone when playing online games. When playing the game with the sound effects on, whenever I try to talk through the microphone to others they hear amplified loud sounds and tones and can't hear me. But when I turn off the game's sounds (so I'm not hearing anything in my headphones) when I speak people can hear me clearly. This tells me that the sound I'm hearing in my headphones is being relayed, along with my voice, to people when I turn on the microphone.

I've searched about this problem but can't seem to find an answer, so please help...does anyone know where I can make sound card changes (mine is a realtek) or setting changes to where I can listen to the game's sounds and speak on the microphone at the same time, without the game sound input being included in the microphone output?

Answer:Having Trouble with Headset Microphone and Computer Audio

I am having the exact same issue, and have the same sound card. I haven't tried this yet because of a second issue I am having but read this link (okay it's my first post and I can't post links, so you will have to adjust this):

So it appears to be a mixing issue? Shouldn't that be changable somewhere aside from the program your using?

My issue is whenever I hit setup in ventrilo, it locks the program. It's a brand new machine, on the last couple versions of vent as well - but on my older machine it did the exact same thing - different sound card. All drivers are up to date, and i tried holding down the bypass key as the VENT FAQ suggests but it has no effect.

I am knew on the board. Greetings

I installed a NEW Logitech USB Headset 350 onto my Winows XP Service Pack 2 generic 'puter.

I now have no speaker sound and no option shows except the headset and "Modem #1 line ".

It sorta looks like I have no speaker drivers .

Unplugging the headset does not help.

Anybody know how to fix this problem so I am not forced to wear a headset for audio ALL OF THE TIME ?

Answer:Installed new USB Headset NOW no speaker audio even if I unplug the headset

Yeah, my USB headset was a little weird at first as well.

Try going into your volume control (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control):
1. Click Options
2. Properties
3. Change the mixer device from the USB headset to your speakers.

Should work.

Also should note you can change the output settings in most audio software (for example: Windows Media Player, Winamp, etc.) so if you can't hear anything from your speakers when using those programs, try fiddling with those settings as well. I know for Winamp it's Options > Preferences > Plug-ins > Output > double-click the plug-in you use (mine is out_ds.dll) and again change it to your speakers using the drop down menu.

I can't figure out how to fix this. I noticed that, when I'm watching a video, my headset's mic will relay the audio coming into my headset. Disabling Stereo Mix doesn't fix it. The physical controller that's on my headset cable doesn't stop it from happening, as even if I turn the volume knob all the way down and flick the mute switch, it's still picking up the audio. Muting my headset from within the computer stops the mic from hearing it, as does switching to my speakers that are plugged into the front jack. My headset is a 3.5mm jack type plugged into the back of the computer, directly into the motherboard.

HI! I'm just new here. I purposely registered to ask about a problem my laptop is having now. I originally have a Vista OS, but it's now XP because of many problems I had with the first one. All thing is good until I was surprised that my laptop, Compaq Presario c700, is not reading my headset. The sound is okay with the laptop's own speaker. And I thought it was only the headset, but now even the microphone jack isn't working. And I really need to do recordings for my project. My sound manager, or what you call it, is Conexant High Definition Audio . I already searched some sites, but I can't still figure out the real answer.

Please..please...please...Help me with this one. I am not that much of a techie..

Answer:Headset and Recording problems w/ Conexant High Definition Audio

if you could provide me with the sound full propeties that might help. as a quick test though you could try going to device manager by right clicking my computer and clicking propeties and check that the sound card drivers are corectly installed and working.

I have a problem that I hope can be fixed. I just recently bought a new computer and I did not have the same issue on the old computer (which was XP). The one I have now is Windows 7 64 bit home premium. Same headset and everything. Not using a sound card either, just using an integrated one.

The problem I am having is this: when talking to someone in Skype, my microphone is somehow picking up any output audio that my headset is receiving. For example when I'm playing any game or listening to music and talking to someone, they can hear everything that is happening with crystal clearness. This was not happening on my old computer with the same headset. So I'm guessing it's a Windows 7 thing but I have combed every option and I just don't know what to do. They say it sounds like I'm not even using a headset at all and people tell me to turn off my speakers and put on my headset all the time when this isn't the case!

It's not because my sound is on max either, if I have the sound at 20% they hear it at the exact same level on top of listening to me talk. I have combed tons of forums and even found another thread with the same issue, but it was outdated from 2 years ago and no fixes for Windows 7.

I realllly need some help. Any is appreciated.

I've encountered a couple of problems with sound on my Windows 10 laptop. The original issue was very similar to the one outlined here: sound would become much louder in all media after pausing and then playing. I followed the suggestion from that thread to install the generic Microsoft High Definition Audio Device instead of the Realtek one, which solved the issue.

But then when I plugged my headset into the audio jack via an audio/mic splitter (I was using the correct 4 conductor 3.5mm version) my computer no longer recognized the headset's external microphone (only the internal one). So ... I switched back to the Realtek audio driver, which in turn recognized my external mic ... but I'm obviously now back at square one with the original sound problem!

Is there a solution to this vicious cycle?

Answer:Windows 10 audio drivers and headset microphone recognition

I'm not sure if this is the right category, but anyways, I guess the title says enough.
I simply want to record the audio output for a game with mic chat, so instead of recording with my mic from another speaker, because this is more difficult and worse quality.
I'm going to use this with for example the Google Translate voice (or any other speech synths) to speak for me, because the microphone has some problems, for example that it needs to be really close to record anything at all, and I don't like my voice either.

Hi there everyone.I've had this Dynex headset for a long time, and it has never given me any problems. It has a single earpiece on the side with the microphone, and connects to my computer through USB. My computer has an integrated Realtek chip, model ALC888. (The dynex headset appears to have a model number of 8K17A, although I would assume that's incorrect since google doesn't bring any results.)Anyhow, pluging my new XBox 360 pc controller, and starting up Ventrillo, users tell me that they can't understand me over the static that's coming from my microphone. A little surprised, I closed ventrillo and opened Audacity, and began monitoring my microphone. Sure enough, it was generating static, albeit the weirdest kind I have ever heard. My first step in trouble shooting was to check the connection. I tried a different USB port; no luck. I checked the wire itself, that didn't fix it either. I tried it in an entirely different computer, and it worked, so it must be something wrong with this computer.I then tried uninstalling all USB Audio Device drivers relating to this headset (hidden or otherwise), and then redectecting it. No luck. Even a restart didn't fix it.I would use Windows Restore, however I disabled it due to low disk space and the fact that I would never need it (till now).If anyone has any kind of advanced system troubleshooting I can use to figure out what may be causing this static to occur, that would be great. Here's some ... I have a bluetooth headset, and I've paired/added it to my laptop. I check all its services and the drivers installed fine. But for some reason, the sound still goes through the speakers. I went to Control Panel->Hardware and Sounds->Sounds and it only showed 2 entries- Digital Audio (HDMI) and Speakers. There was no entry for a bluetooth headset.

I've once tried installing WIDCOMM bluetooth software. It worked at first, but later it couldn't connect to my device and had problems starting its stack service.

If you click on device will it allow you to configure? (Lower left) What does it have under properties, lower right.

Could you share what type of sound card you have. With Realtek there is Realtek Audio manager with a separate set of settings.

I know this question has been asked across different forums throughout the net. However, after I've almost tried everything now to solve this issue, I'm finally addressing the Lenovo community hoping to resolve this issue. Issue: Bose bluetooth headset QC35 gets successfully connected to my Lenovo T530 but doesn't show up as an audio device under Win10 Pro. In first stage, the connection seemed to be "fine" as the device name of the headset (configured through the Bose app) appeared under Win10 device manager. Already tried: 1. 3 different bluetooth USB dongles2. Inbuilt Broadcomm bluetooth device3. All imageanable settings within Windows4. Different driver sets5. Bose hotline (very unsatisfying support)6. Bose shop (as well very unsatisfying and useless answers)7. Windows support (very, very unsatisfying support)8. Completely deleting the headset from Windows (including driver)9. Resetting the headset Overall, the outcome is that I still can't use the QC35 as a bluetooth headset with my T530. Trying with different other notebooks and Apple devices worked fine. Looking forward to receiving your much appreciated thoughts and possible ideas on how to solve this problem.

I had recently gotten help from one of the forum admins/tech support, Broni, to remove a powerful and horrible virus that kept playing ads in the background.

but now that its been removed, all my sound is not working on my PC. Rebooting the pc doesnt produce sound, clicking things doesnt produce sound, my headset doesnt produce sound, my microphone doesnt produce sound or transmit it, and videos, along with music on the pc doesnt produce sound.

It seems that all sound has stopped functioning I could use some help!

Answer:No audio at all from computer/headset/microphone after having computer cleaned of virus

Go to your computer manufacturers website, go to the support/download/driver page.

Select which operating system you have.

Go to the audio section, and download the file , run the EXE, restart your machine and sound should work.

It's probably a driver issue..

Sorry, I guess I can't answer your question directly, except to say something must not be working right. When I plug in an external microphone, the internal one mutes.  This is for a T60p running Windows Vista Business. If the computer isn't working correctly, another option might be to use a camera that has a built in microphone for Skype, or use a bluetooth microphone.  I have used my Jawbone for Skype calls, and it works very well, but it doesn't have a mute function.Don Mannino

For the past two days, I've been struggling to record commentary for a YouTube video I am making. My Headset works everywhere else just fine, but if I plug it in into my laptop it creates static and so does every other mic. I called HP, and they said there was nothing wrong with the jack since I could hear everything just fine. Sometimes the static is in the files themselves but other times it's just through my headsets. I have no clue what to do. I've looked at every single tutorial thing and tinkered with every little thing. The problem was solved yesterday then I tried to record today and RIP.
I checked, and it says all my drivers are updated.
The headset came with a cable that splits the audio, and I'm thinking of splitting it then splitting it back into the laptop. I really have no clue what else to do.

Thank you in advance.

I'm trying to record some songs (Please do not ask why)
Whenever i try to record, it comes through the headphones which is normal.
The problem now is when i record, Camtasia can't detect the mic has speakers or something
So when i do audio record, it records NOTHING, ( i'm not speaking through mic)
If i move the mic to my speakers, it doesn't record well and sometimes records nothing by static. If i use my original speaker settings (IDT Audio) it records nothing

So i thought that if i disabled my headset, i would hear stuff through my speakers

Now how do i disable my headset WITHOUT pulling off the plug.

I looked through IDT panel everywhere and could not find a way to disconnect the headset.

So how do i disable it without pulling the headset's plug off?

If you can tell me a way to record without disabling the headset at all please tell me.

I have recently purchase a headset/mic from crucible technologies. Cost inc vat £23-44. They do have more expensive ones. I also got a telephone/ headset adaptor which allows you to plug in both the headset and your telephone so that you can switch from one to the other. That cost £35-19. I have recently purchased a combined stereo headset and microphone (Packard Bell PB-HS200), with a view to using them with my home PC (running XP home), so that I can play with one of my Christmas presents (a french language course)! The only problem is I can?t make the damn microphone work! I know that it does work as I have successfully recorded myself on a colleagues laptop (running win 98).One of the problems is that I have a six speaker set up so the mic jack is in fact a line out under 6-channel configuration. When I unplug all the speakers and plug in the headphone and microphone jacks, I can get sound out but nothing is being recorded!I have checked obvious things (like ensuring the mic is not muted and that it is selected under recording control!). Two things I have noticed is that under ?Sounds and Audio devices ? Sound recording? the advanced button is greyed out, and under ?recording control ? advanced? the tone controls are greyed out. Do these have any bearing on this problem? Before the whole lot goes out of the window is it possible to buy a USB headset with microphone and would it be possible to use these without having to disconnect the speakers as this would seem to be a possible way to go? I have to solve this problem well before the summer hols (or go to Cornwall instead!).Any help advice or comments will (as usual with my problems!) be very much appreciated.

Answer:Help with headset and microphone

You can't just unplug the working 6.1 devices and expect the mic to work - the socket will still have sound coming out of it.You need to re-configure the way the sockets work, using the supplied software (usually click on the "Sound Effect" icon in the system tray.)

I recently built a new PC and today I first plugged in my headset to play some games but realized the microphone attached to the headset would not work. I can hear the game but not speak to people. I tried plugging into the microphone jack but then I couldn't hear anything and the microphone would hardly pick anything up. I then tried to plug in my headset at the back in all three Jacks but they gave me a combination of not working at all, then only the mic working but not picking anything up, and only speakers working. The jack on the headset and my pc are all 3.5mm.

Basically I've gotten used to wearing headsets the wrong way around when gaming. This wasn't a problem unti lately I got one with a micrphone to participate in clan matches.

I play first person shooters but if I wear it the correct way i can't hear where people are located so it is vital I have to wear it round the wrong way. Of course my microphone points backwards so is totally useless.
My soundcard is a realtek high definition audio device.

I'd like to find a software fix to basically switch around the sound of the headset. So left sounds into the right and vice versa. Just simply switching the current 2 directions around so when people are on the left I hear them on the left! and if they are on the right to hear them on the right. with RealTek audio manager i can set it to 7.1 surround or just normal sterio which is 2 directional. Either way the people aren't heard in there correct place.

Please, I will greatly GREATLY appreciate if somebody can help me. I've tried various headsets and all have this problem.

I'm in real need of a GOOD headset that will also allow me to record high quality voice recordings. I'm currently using the BlueSnowBall microphone which is really really good but when I'm either recording live games or streaming the microphone picks up my keyboard which is abit annoying.
My doing voice overs/commentaries/guides its fine but when I'm streaming it's abit annoying.
My youtube is starting to do well so the quality needs to be good. No price range maybe a min/max would be good to give me a good idea of how much etc...
Thanks all,

I have a headset and two computers. Old PC, Acer. Current PC, Cyberpower. Headset, Humlin.
A few days or so ago I plugged my headset into my current PC and it recorded fine and clear. However, the sound suddenly came out the speakers at full volume and it said the headphones jack had been unplugged. It hadn't and it was still in. I twisted it a little and it said plugged back in. I started recording again but had issues with both mic and headphones with the computer telling me they'd been unplugged and plugged back in, but the jacks never moved. Each time the speakers went to full volume. It was fine for a bit and then when I unplugged the jack the speakers went to full volume again.
I plugged the headset into my old computer the other day and it all seemed fine. Did it again a day or two later and it wouldn't record but I had sound. It also took my volume up to full when unplugging the headphones jack, but it's been the one and only time it has done that. Then the next day I could record but had no sound.
I was using the front ports so switched to the back ports and both mic and headphones seemed fine. I recorded what I wanted to today (after double checking mic and headphones, both seemed fine) and then went to listen to the audio on my laptop and there's a really loud constant buzz.
I've plugged my headset back into my current PC and there's no buzz when playing back the recording, but it did say unplugged jack (headphones) and turned... Read more

The problem is, whenever I plug the headset in the USB-port pretty much nothing happens and I can't get the sound in the headset, it just stays in the speakers...

It used to be no problem when I used a headset with the sound-port on the motherboard to just change it. Anyone have any suggestions on what I might do? :(

edit: forgot to say that it works just fine after rebooting the computer.

Thank you

Hi Foonksh,

Try going into the Control Panel and go into Sounds and Audio Devices. From there you can pick the default device for recording and for playback. In the playback section, set the headset as the default device instead of your speakers.

Hi, I recently bought a new headset due to one of the ears falling apart...

My old one was USB with a 3.5mm cable and worked perfectly fine. The new one I got has no USB and uses the green and pink cables. I've plugged them in and it seemed as if they were working well but I realised they're not actually picking up the sound from the microphone, they're playing my computers sounds.

I looked through other forums and found people saying that it may be a driver issue, so I updated and got the Realtek HD, which then showed the Stereo Mix in my devices. Basically what's happening is that Stereo Mix and Microphone are both playing volume at the same level and acting as if they're the same. I've tried disabling Stereo and keeping Mic but it still plays the computers sounds. I've tried vice-versa too. The "Speakers" device is also playing at the same level of volume.

And then obviously since it's doing that, it's playing my computer sounds through Skype.

Basically what I want to achieve is have the headset playing sound but also be able to speak through skype without it playing the sounds I have on.

Also, there's a little switch on the cable to act as a "Mic Mute" switch, if the Mic is ON then the sound is fine, if I switch it to OFF the sound is very echo'd and distant.

Answer:New Headset, not detecting microphone.

First, stereo mix should be set as the default recording device. Then any input device that is used will be heard.

As Windows only allows one default audio playback device, separating sounds or what's heard may not be possible or is an option of the application program. I'm not familiar with Skype so I don't know what the options are or do.

Hello Eightforums.

Firstly, my problem is that my headset microphone is not working correctly. As my laptop (Lenovo g505s) only has 1 audio jack, but my headset has 2 cables (green and pink), i bought a 3.5mm headset splitter adapter that splits audio output to 3.5m headphone and 3.5 mic jack. Having plugged it in, I am getting both my internal microphone sounds along with my headset microphone sounds through my headset.

This is what my volume mixer looks like right now:

My playback tab in sounds:

My recording tab in sounds:

My SmartAudio :
I am unsure what how to proceed to fixing this issue.

Answer:Headset Microphone not working

Oh, it seems the problem got solved.

My solution i found on the internet was to go to device manager and then under sound, video and game controllers, i uninstalled the sound drivers. (in my case, AMD High Def Audio Device and Conexant Smart Audio HD)

After both were uninstalled, I restarted my laptop. Then on boot up, the small speaker on bottom right on the desktop has a little red circle on it. I troubleshooted the problem (right click speaker, top option) and it installed something (i assume both the 2 sound drivers I had just uninstalled, since i just checked device manager after it had finished installing and both my previous sound drivers were present). And it seems to work now.

I still don't entirely understand how it worked, but that was my solution.

Now my headset will not work. I called the guy and he said "I told you, you need drivers." He did NOT tell me that. My headset worked before he serviced my computer.

What is the problem?

Answer:Microphone / Headset does not work

Check in the bios to see if they are enabled, you should not need any drivers. If you are using the font panel jacks look to see if nay wires are loose in the case, front panel jacks are plugged into the board. You need to look at your MOBO layout to check things out, if you do not have it you can find it on the manufacturers site.

Today the headset i've been waiting for arrived. My Steelseries 5h v2 (W/O usb driver).
My old Headset died so i ordered this one..
My problem is that the microphone is EXTREMELY quiet. On my laptop it works just fine with no problem at all. But on my PC its quiet and i cant even get into the Microphone boost menu.
My mate on skype can't hear me talking either, i have to shout in it.
So i wondered if my drivers were the cause of this problem. So i updated them and nothing changed.
I think my soundcard is called VIA P4M890 im not that into Computers so i dont know if this is right. The driver i downloaded had some software called High Definition Audio Deck to manage my soundsettings but these doesnt seem to do anything (When i try to boost my microphone).

My earlier headset was a USB and this new one is with JACK plugs does that make a difference.

I Apologies for my bad English, and i hope someone can help me with my problem.

I tested the sound of the microphone on 2 diffrent computers and the problem persists in both of them it seems.
I am wondering if this can be fixed or should i bring the headset to the retailer and try to solve it with them ? I want to be atleast 70% sure that it is the headset before i bring it to them.

Hi all,

This has me so stumped, I'm usually pretty good with my own tech issues but I could really do with some expert opinions on this.

I have a Creativity Fatality gaming headset, which is not a USB set, it's a normal green/pink jack set. I haven't used it in a couple of months but it always worked fine on this system before, and I've not altered any settings since the last time I used it, that I can think of, but when I plug it in the microphone just doesn't work.

The headphones work fine, which is making me think it's not the soundcard that's the issue, and I tried the headset on a friend's laptop and the mic works perfectly, so am thinking it is some kind of setting/driver issue but I have no idea what.

I have updated my Realtek sound card drivers to the latest ones. The only weird thing that might give someone a clue is when I plug my mic jack into the pink socket the Realtek sound manager thingyamebob recognises it as speakers, and when I plug the green jack in it doesn't recognise that at all.

I have done the standard stuff such as checking audio devices, volumes and stuff. When selecting the device for recording the microphone is not an option at all, it just shows the Realtek soundcard device.

Does anyone have any ideas that I've not thought about I can try? Any help gratefully received.

Answer:Headset microphone not working...

Welcome to the forum This may sound stupid simple but there's a switch near the volume control to turn on the microphone just double check its on.

Have you configured your audio devices?Control panel, sound, right click your sound card and configure, run the wizard and select 2 channel stereo speakers.

Go into your realtek control panel also and make sure its set to stereo and make sure your mic is enabled there,if you right click the icon in your taskbar you should be able to configure it.

Could you post your operating system and the make and model of your computer if it has one,the model of your soundcard if you know it.

Go to control panel, system, device manager are there any yellow exclamation marks?

So I can't even disable my build-in microphone, or find my headset mic so how am I supposed to make it work..?

Any solution? , Thank you for your time.

Hi all, cant seem to get my headset and microphone to work! I have windows XP, a soundmax sound card, which i have a 5.1 logitech speakers connected to it. Below this is the pink and green buttons for microphone and speakers, also have two ports at the front of the pc for the same thing. When i select the microphone in soundmax, a yellow triangle comes up with a black exclamination mark in it, so not sure why that happens. Also playing online games, can hear sound through the normal speakers but not the headset. So do i have do something with the normal speakers to use the headset and microphone or is it something totally different i should be doing? Tried all the other windows sound options but still no use!Can anyone help please? thanks

Answer:headset and microphone not working

when hedphones are plugged in windows should automaticly transfer the sound outputted to the headphone device. if the sound is still coming out of the speakers this probably means that windows is not regestering the fact that the headphones are plugged in try plugging them into all headphone ports on your pc. as for the microphone, if you double click the sound icon in the botom righthand corner of the screen (next to the clock) then you should get a dialog window one of these options is line in, however this will only output the audio not neceserily chang how it is being inputed. to test the micrphone try recording from it in windwos sound recorder, (start > programs > accessories > entertainment >soundrecorder) and then you should be able to see an oscillating line if there is sound being recorded. if no sound is being recorded, check your microphone, and then if it is ok try checking for (updated) sound card drivers.

Answer:Headset microphone not working

Normally, the Stereo Mix (may be called System Mixer) is set as the default Recording Device. Then whatever is plugged in can be heard, without having to specifically select a device.

Did you download the driver from the Dell downloads? If not, that is the first thing to do.

Product Support | Dell US

To set the Stereo Mix, in the Recording panel, RIGHT click in an empty space and then click to select show Disabled and Disconnected Devices. Stereo Mix should now show up and you can enable it and make it the Default Recording device. System Mixer is required if you ever want to record audio from the Internet.
Product Support | Dell US

Finally, has this ever worked? or is this the first time you've tried the mic input.

Months ago my microphone stopped working on my pc, then eventually sound also stopped working. I replaced my sound card with another (SB X-FI Xtreme also) and sound once again worked. However I cannot get my Turtle Beach headset microphone to work, the sound works fine.

What I've tried to resolve the solution:
*Checked to make sure it was in the right hole, of course.
*Downloaded recent device drivers for SB X-fFI Xtreme and install.
*Gone through looking for something that might have muted the microphone;

^ I've been trying to check playback using sound recorder.
*Both this headset and another headset that don't work on my pc are fully functional on my laptop.
*Attempted to uninstall device drivers and reinstalled, also didn't work.

Answer:Headset microphone not working

Where are you plugging in the mic? On the front panel or the mic jack on the SoundBlaster sound card rear I/O panel?

Also, you should set the "What You Hear" as the default recording device. That will allow you to record streaming audio from the internet and also whatever is connected either to the mic or line in will record (assuming all is well). I don't see the What You Hear in your Recording pane. RIGHT click in a blank area in that panel and then LEFT click to show Disabled and Disconnected devices. The What You Hear (what Soundblaster calls the System Mixer or Stereo Mix) should now be shown and you can enable it and make it the default recording device.

As you have a separate sound card, make sure the integrated audio on the motherboard is disabled in the BIOS so it does not conflict. You can only have one default playback device.

Recently I bought a Turtle Beach Earforce X12 headset. And the sound works fine but when I tried out
the Microphone nothing happened, like it wasn't there. I have updated my drivers several times tried but no success. When I go to Recording section in Sound, it shows the microphone as a default device but when I click on it there is a red light not a green light

Answer:My headset microphone not working

The first thing I see is you do not have the correct RealTek sound driver (what Gigabyte shows for this model) installed. All you have is the generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio Codec driver.

Install the RealTek driver from the Gigabyte downloads for your motherboard as the first step.

It does not appear you have the correct AMD driver installed for your video card either. Go to and download and install the correct driver.

Considering the sound and video do not have the correct drivers, you need to take a look at all the drivers. Gigabyte provides an install disc with all the drivers and apparently that was not used. However, DO NOT install the Gigabyte EasyTune program, if its on the disc as that is known to cause problems. (EasyTune6 was supplied with my Gigabyte motherboard)

One other comment. I seriously doubt that you have 1TB of RAM (Memory). That is probably the size of your hard drive.

Ok so I had a USB logitech headset for about 2 years and it broke. I could hear sound and talk to people via skype and ventrilo just fine. Now the new headset I have bought plugs into the mic and speaker ports on the back of the comp, only problem is my computer is not recognizing the Mic.. I'm not really sure where to go from here, the headset is really awesome and comfortable but it looks like I am going to have to return it for a USB model. Does anyone know what might be wrong? I am noticing that in the device manager it is not locating my sound card.. Why would a usb headsets mic work opposed to an analog headset? I have a few conferences I need to part of coming up early next week and I need my mic working. Please help

Thanks, Mike

Answer:Headset microphone not working

a usb headset actually doesnt use your sound card, it uses a virtual windows sound device. In order to use the new headset you have, you will have to make sure your sound card has the proper drivers installed. If you know your make/model of pc, or if it's homegrown, you can try and find the drivers. Or if you need assistance, the best way is to attach an everest hardware report to your next post.
you can download everest here:
once installed, at the top select reports/report wizard. select hardware information only. and save it as a text file to somewhere on your computer where you will find it easily.
next, attach it to a post, directions on how to attach:

Hi everyone.

I am having difficulty getting my headset to work correctly and I can't figure out what exactly the problem is. I am running WINXP Prof ver 2002.

My keyboard is a HP and plugs into both the microphone and speaker jacks in the rear of my computer, and has two jacks at the back of the keyboard for the Mic and Headset. When my computer speakers are plugged into the keyboard headset jack, they work fine.

When my headset is plugged in though, the sound comes out of one ear only and is very faint, despite me playing with volume controls and the computer software volume controls. This is a brand new headset, I replaced the old one because I had the same problem and thought it was the headset. Also, for some reason with this headset, when I plug the mic into the keyboard jack, then the speakers into the headphone jack, my voice comes out the speakers and it does that stupid screeching thing. This never happened with my old headset so I'm not sure how to tackle it.

Appreciate any help/info. Thanks.

Hello,I recently bought an Aspire E5-573 and I use a new headset Sennheiser PC3 and a audio in/out splitter.I have a lot of background noise when recording - on another laptop I can just check the "noise suppression" and it works fine - but here the only enhancement options are "personal call", "recording" and "disable" - they don't solve my problem.I tried installing all the latest drivers from RealTek but I cannot get the noise suppresion option... I see this laptop is running ALC255 whereas my other one is running ALC269 ?Is there a way to get this noise suppresion option? Statis is quite significant and prevents me from making any quality recordings.Attached is a pic of what I see and what I was hoping to get....Is there a way I can change the sound effect provider to get the RealTek one and the noise suppression option?thanks in advance for your help and regards,

I have a pic that allows both a headphone and mic connection. I went through troubleshooting and everything checks fine. The computer recognizes the mic and is registering sound output, but as soon as I go to record or talk to other people, they hear nothing. It's not just the one headset either. Please help this is the most frustrating thing I've had to deal with on my otherwise solid pc

Answer:Headset microphone not working

Check the RECORDING device. Stereo Mix should be set as the Default recording device. Most programs use that as the audio source.

I just bought a new Razer headset and I can't seem to get the microphone working. This is the first microphone i've used on this computer. The headset is
When I built my computer about 2 years ago the CD that came with the motherboard wouldn't work so I downloaded the audio and lan drivers from the motherboard site and everything worked fine. I think that may be the reason my headset microphone will not work now. I just re-downloaded and installed the audio and chipset drivers from, but the microphone still will not work. I already checked on its not set to mute on the headset itself.
Is this a driver issue, if so where can I get a driver that will work? Or is it just some option in windows that I have to turn on to allow it to work?
The motherboard is the ECS G31T-M7 with windows 7 64 bit. Intel 2 quad core with nvidia gtx 260 if any of that helps.

Answer:headset microphone not working

If you have access to another PC test the Razer on it; it's possible the mic. itself could be defective.

My experience has been that ECS is (at best) marginal on driver support. If the Razer tests OK and you're tired of playing driver detective it might be worth biting the bullet and purchasing a decent basic sound card.

Hope this helps

I have a Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset , the audio work's but I cannot get the mic to work.
I have a Creative soundblaster 5.1 live soundcard and a abit fatal1ty fp-in9 sli m/b. Audio works on both soundcard and on-board sound on the m/b , but not the mic .... I know some basics to computer's but I'm stuck here.

Answer:Headset Microphone not working

Looking at this headset, on a YouTube video, the mic portion plugs into the headset. Has this ever worked? If not, I would contact Creative as there may be a problem. Or, if you have access to another PC (a friend's) you could try it on that to see if it works.

As you have both on-board sound and a separate sound card, if you want to use the SoundBlaster you should disable the on-board in the BIOS. Having two can cause conflicts and things to not work. In addition Windows only allows one default audio playback device. Also, where are you plugging in? If its the front panel of the PC case, what audio do you have connected to the front panel? From the motherboard or from the SoundBlaster? Again, if you are using the SoundBlaster but have the motherboard audio connected to the front panel it won't work.

I have a Fatal1ty motherboard in one of my PC's, it is an ASRock Z77 Professional Fatal1ty.

I have been using speakers with my PC which work fine. Now I have wanted to talk to my friends on line so I tried to plug in my headset with attached microphone. I can hear fine on the headset but I can't hear my voice or use my microphone for talking to people.

When I go on vent for World of Warcraft, they say they can hear my background and stuff, and I probably have a internal mike of some sort. Do I need to turn that off or something? If so how do it do that?

I have the AC97 realtek audio drive, not sure if that helps, but it seems to be where all the sound options are.

Hello everybody

I know this question has been asked many many many times but after spending a fair amount of hours trying to find a solution, after trying each and every suggestion i have found on other posts.. i cant solve my microphone problem and it is for that that i seek your help.

Here is my problem : I cant get the hearset microphone ( Trust GHS 303) to work. It is always the integrated one that is used.

I have tried to update the drivers, i have verified that the headset works in my desktop and it does
noting is muted and all volumes are at the max.

I had Realtek installed and i tried that popular solution of going to the advance settings on the yellow folder... and blah blah but problem is that doesnt matter wich version of Realtek i install.... i can get the damn folder nor the advance settings....

As you can see when i go to the recording devices it says the mic is not plugged in ( even when it does) additionally when i have Realtek installed this option that now is grey doesnt even show

I dont know what else to try. Does any of you maybe know how can i get the mic to be detected so i can use it as default?

Many thanks in advance

Hi guys, been having a real problem lately. I bought a nice new corsair vengeance 1300 headset to go with my 600t case. However when i plug them in to the front jack the mic doesn't work. I know the mic works because i have tested in the back panel. Also when i plug them into the front panel i get the message for mic and the message for heasdset in.
any idea what the problem could be?

Answer:Headset microphone problems

Double check the wiring to the front panel connector on the motherboard for a start. Almost sounds like it could be a crossed wire there. Also make sure if you used the HD audio connection that the (I assume) onboard audio is set to HD audio in the bios. Same applies if you used the AC'97 connector, seeing as the case has both from the front panel.

I just purchased a Logitech G230 Stereo Gaming Headset off of Amazon. I got it today and tried to install it, and while the headphone part seems to be working, I can't seem to install the mic that came with it. There are two audio jacks, one for headphones and the other I'm pretty sure for microphones (the chord fits perfectly), but the mic isn't showing up as a recording device in my control panel. Is it not compatible with my laptop? (running windows 8)

Hi josephpatmit ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
What model of laptop do you have ? Do you have the Machine Number from the laptop sticker ?
You may download the user and hardware manual for your pc at the support site.
This would allow you to check on ports availability for for headphone and microphone ports to connect.
Based on the headphone manual OS supported : Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 10
You can also use the set up guides from this video or call in United States +1 646-454-3200  for support specific for drivers and specification of this device.

I race online and I would like to use my headset for communication. When i use the mic it works but the person I'm talking with comes over my speakers instead of the headset. It is plugged in correctly as I can tell. How can I fix this p[roblem??Thanks.Harrison

Answer:Microphone headset problem

Does your mic have two connectors that need to be plugged into your computer?  I think you may need to unplug your speakers and plug a jack for incoming mic sound to that jack.
