Bluetooth connection b/w desktop and laptop - no audio option

Question: Bluetooth connection b/w desktop and laptop - no audio option

I'm not sure this is the right place to post this but I'm just going to guess that it is.

I recently upgraded my desktop from 7 to 10. I used to connect my laptop (already using 10) to my desktop via Bluetooth and it allowed me to select the desktop pc's speakers as audio output, effectively mixing both computers' audio through my headphones attached to the desktop. This is no longer something my computers seem to do; literally all that has changed is that I upgraded the desktop OS and I would have assumed this is something windows10 can do but the Bluetooth menu is almost comically unhelpful.
It used to be relatively easy to do this in 7 but I am at a loss as to how to do this in 10. Is this functionality somehow not a part of Win10?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I want to stream audio via Bluetooth from my Android phone to my laptop running Windows 10 version 1703, but the option to play audio from phone via Bluetooth is not showing up on Settings>Bluetooth and Other Devices. Obviously, I have already paired my Android device with my laptop, and my device is visible on Other Devices, and listed as "Paired". I have also already checked my device properties on Devices and Printers, and on Service tab, "Advanced Audio" (A2DP profile) box is checked. Both my laptop and Android phone have Bluetooth 4.0 support, with my laptop also supporting HS extension, and my phone, LE (Low Energy).

I have no clue why Bluetooth audio playback isn't showing. How would I make Windows play audio via Bluetooth from my device? Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone,

its day five with Win8 and the next Problem occurs.
In Win7 i installed Bluetooth and connected my Windowsphone7 without ANY Problems, using my X230 for making calls with the setting headset and speakerphone:

Link to picture

Now in Windows8 the option headset and speakerphone does not appear ANY MORE.
THIS IS UNBELIEVABE. Is this a Problem of the Thinkpad's Bluetooth 4.0 Stack?
It may be a Problem of Win8 but I'm not sure.

Up to now, i can STREAM Audio from my Phone to the Computer (holy crap who needs this) but using it for calls... no way, because the phone wont be recognized as in Win7. So now bluetooth has become useless in my Thinkpad.

I really dont know if there will be any solution, but I'm posting for x230 Users to be careful when upgrading to Win8.
There will be much more problems you expect...

best regards
Christian

I have a Yoga 11S running Windows 10.  My keyboard and mouse are both bluetooth and working fine.  I have an adaptor for my Bose audio speaker wich pairs fine but the audio is very unstable.  When I pair my Android phone with the same adaptor it works fine.  I have checked the adaptor on other Bose devices and it works fine.  It's my Lenovo.  I've checked all the drivers I can think of.  Any suggestions?

Answer:Yoga 11s - Unstable Bluetooth Audio connection

Hello Rebeck16!

It is possible that the bluetooth device is going to sleep occasionally to save power.

Try opening Device Manager, find your bluetooth device (On my Lenovo, it is a Broadcom bluetooth module. Yours may be an Intel). Right click to go to the device properties. Under the last tab, uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" and hit OK.

Hi,I have an issue with connecting through bluethooth to my BT audio device.I am able to connect to the device with my android tablet, with my previous Lenovo laptop and even with my Blackberry. The computer founds the device, it recognises it as a BT audio device/sink, but when I click on the "listen to music" service nothing happens....I have reinstalled/upgraded the BT adapter to version 4.0 (Intel BT adapter v 4).I have tried evrything, I googled the problem etc but I couldn't find a solution, please help, it drives me crazy! Thanks in advance for any comments/ideas.

Answer:Bluetooth audio connection issue (on x240 with Win7)

Wohoo! -- I just solved the exact same problem.  Anyways: I could also pair to my headset, but nothing happened when I clicked the links. (I even tried to install Skype to see if that would enable the link, but that didn't help.) This is what you should do: Disable the Bluetooth radio ("Turn adapter off"). Computer will hang for a while and report a dll hanging. Continue through the dialog box (in effect killing the DLL process). Start the Bluetooth adapter again, and the links work. Use the VoIP link to use your headset for Lync, Skype, Hangouts or whatever. Hope this helps. Please let me know if it works.  Cheers, ~Silverjam :-)

I have an identical phone to when I was able to connect b4 I lost it.
I would have expected to be able to connect with no hassle but to no avail.
The laptop recognises my phone and vice versa.
The message when trying to connect says "there was a hardware failure in the modem or other device".and......."Could not detect modem,it may not be in use, turned off,or not installed properly"

I`ve tested the modem and it`s working properly so I wonder if anyone can help.
God bless for now,

Just wondering if anyone could offer some advice or help.

I am wanting to send the music that I play on my laptop to my hifi speakers via Bluetooth. My laptop has bluetooth built into it, and I have a bluetooth audio receiver plugged into my hifi speakers by a 3.5mm jack. I have paired the laptop with the receiver. I was then hoping it would be as simple as pressing play and the music would come out through the hifi speakers. Unfortunately it does not and continues to play through the laptop speakers. The receiver I am using is the sony ericsson mbr-100.

Any tips would be great.

Thanks.

I am researching this particular situation to see if it is possible, before we invest the time and money to go much further...
I have a corporate intranet that has desktops and wired access to network shares, etc. I also have a number of netbooks that have to operate in remote locations with no wireless or wired internet connectivity, using data loaded at the office.
I need to securely transfer database files to several netbooks in turn without using USB drives or other removable media, or wireless, which have the potential for loss, risking the data. A secure, wired connection is our preference.
Our plan is to use a USB to RJ-45 connector (such as an Apple USB Ethernet Adapter) to connect to the netbooks. Then, plug the USB in the desktop, and plug the Ethernet cable to the netbook's RJ-45 port. For proof of concept, we've done some initial testing with one device, and have managed to find modified drivers to get the Apple device to work under Windows 7, and looking at it's properties can see a successful Ethernet connection. Setting up the share is more complicated.
We control the hardware and software on each machine, so we intend to make an simple user-friendly GUI application to move the data back and forth (before and after its use at the distributed netbook locations). I suspect that this should be simply a mapping of the netbook as a drive, and copying to and from.
Can anyone provide any advice or guidance as to the best way to accomplish this? Any specifics on settin... Read more

Answer:Connecting a laptop to desktop using USB to ethernet while keeping desktop network connection?

I've done exactly the same thing with a client company in the past. In that case it involved transferring sensitive banking data to laptops which were to be used by the client's representatives in the field.
My preferred method, given the need for avoiding removable media, was the one you describe in your final paragraph; we instituted a policy of copying to a dedicated desktop and using a single authorised member of staff to disconnect the desktop from the network after the copy process, copying the data to the laptops, disconnecting them, deleting the desktop copy and reconnecting the desktop.
It worked smoothly, and was very secure, given that one person handled the process. As far as I know the client still follows the same procedure.

Newbie!
I am re-opening the thread on Bluetooth Mouse loss when coming out of power save as I cannot find any solution to this, or mention of the situation I have!
I have a Toshiba Sat Pro running Vista Home Premium 32bit with Toshiba Bluetooth Stack, Logitech 5000 mouse & keyboard.
This problem has only recently started & must be the result of a MS security download!
When I come out of power save I noticed that my Bluetooth icon was static, when I checked the Bluetooth settings I found it was showing Bluetooth as enabled, I then set it to disable & then re-enabled straight away and got my connection back, (this also affects the keyboard!)
Maybe this info will generate an idea regarding the problem.

Hi everyone, I've been trying to use a Logitech ultrathin touch bluetooth mouse and microsoft sculpt mobile bluetooth keyboard with my ideapad. I'm running Windows 8.1.  Both work fine for a while but then it appears they lose the bluetooth connection. This seems to often coincide with access network/internet over WiFi. The only solution is to call up the Bluetooth manage devices setting and let it reconnect.  If I leave the manage bluetooth device page open on a second screen it helps, but clearly its not ideal!  I was running the Lenovo driver for Bluetooth but I've tried removing it and using the Generic Windows driver to see if that helps.  So far though the same happened after a short while. Any ideas? Many thanks and apologies if someone else has answered this query previously. Simon

Answer:Any advice to fix dropping bluetooth connection on ideapad flex 14 i3 laptop?

Install the bluetooth driver that came with the computer. Windows update probably updated the driver automatically. The new drivers are garbage on the Y2P. Once you install that driver, disable any Windows update pertaining to that driver.

Hey guys,

Having a little issue with Winamp and Remote Desktop Connection. This has happened in the past, but I am going to try and reiterate now that I know more about it. Normally before I go to work, I turn on my computer, Winamp, setup the server, and then go to work so if I want to I can listen to it from here. I connect and use my computer using RDC. I was working on my computer trying to download a file there, and I had to reboot... so I do.

Now, here's the issue. Whenever I'm logging in to a fresh boot of Windows, and I try to play audio, I get this error message:

========================
waveOut output v2.0.2a error

There is no driver installed on your system.
Error code: 6

========================

Now, I never get that issue if I turn on and then access while it's already on... however if I'm logging into Windows just after a reboot [and it processes everything in the startup.ini file] I get that issue.

Is there any fix around this, or any way I can bypass it? I know damn well there is an audio driver.

Hello folks,

my name is lynn. I have been told on a different forum that my laptop does not have bluetooth on it. So, i went and bought a bluetooth adaptor made by targis. It is a usb device. I have it installed with all drivers. I have a bluetooth iblue 737a+ gps receiver; again, all drivers installed on my laptop for it. For some unknown reason, my computer sees the bluetooth adaptor, but refuses to see the bluetooth GPS receiver. I have had it up at Office depot all morning since i bought the adaptor there, but they could not figure out the problem either. The receiver can be seen when connected via a usb mini cable, but the program i wish to use it with, microsoft streets and trips, requires i use it with bluetooth and not a cable. The adaptor doesn?t see my Windows Mobile phone either. I know the GPS and phone are working properly and fully charged because they see each other and I can use my GPS program on my phone with no problem. . I am out of options and/or ideas. Can anyone suggest anything else i should try? I do have an account on msn and would be happy to voice or video chatg there if someone needs to explain something lengthy to me. Oh, and i am blind so use a screen reader to operate my windows 7 lalptop, but that should not have any bearing on figuring this confounded thign out!! :)

thanks, lynn w.

I have a friend who wants to install a printer driver. As I understand it, the printer itself needs to be connected physically for this to work.

He also has a desktop, which is the machine with the printer in question.

For some reason, the guy doesn't want to disconnect the printer from the desktop and temporarily hook it up to the laptop for the driver installation. I can only guess that there's a tangle of cords behind the desktop that he doesn't want to deal with.

So, he's asked me a question that I can't really answer.

He's wondering if he can connect the laptop to the desktop via USB ports on both, and thereby have the printer connected to the laptop "through" the desktop. I have no idea what the answer to this question is because I've never come across that issue before.

As I think about it now, the solution seems pretty simple if he doesn't want to mess with the cables behind the desktop.

If he has another USB cable, he can just disconnect the one in the printer that goes to the desktop and then connect the spare and run it to his laptop.

But I'm still curious about this question of connecting the laptop to the desktop via USB ports. Never heard of that and I would expect that the voltage delivered to the laptop over the USB connection would not be near enough to power the laptop.

Thoughts?

Answer:USB connection from laptop to desktop?

He needs to set up a network to share the printer. Connecting the two computers using a USB cable isn't going to work. In the first place, a standard cable not only won't work, but it could damage both computers. There are USB file transfer cables available, but that isn't going to accomplish printer sharing.

Hello everyone

Recently I started to pick up networking and im trying to learn more about it. For the last couple of days I've been trying to set up a VPN connection between my laptop (wifi) and desktop (ethernet). Where the laptop is hosting the vpn connection and my desktop will connect to the host. I've taken the following steps:

1) Made the ip for my laptop and desktop static (IPv4)
2) I made an incoming connection on my laptop (gave it a new name and password). I also set the ip range (so the ip from the host and client will not be in this range).
3) I have created a VPN on the desktop and put the laptop's ip as server ip.

After I press the connect button and have filled in my username + password I get this error message:
?The remote connection was not made because the attempted VPN tunnels failed. The VPN server might be unreachable. If this connection is attempting to use an L2TP/IPsec tunnel, the security parameters for Ipsec negotiation might not be configured properly.?

Tried following steps to solve this error:

Add exceptions to windows firewall, even tried disabling both firewalls (laptop and desktop)
Changed the VPN type to PPTP, this gives me another error message: ? The network between your computer and the VPN server was interrupted. This can be caused by a problem in the VPN transmission ??

Hello,
I'm trying to set up a small LAN, just to share files from one computer to another. I'm using a crossover cable to connect the two. On every computer I can see the other one through windows explorer. However, when I click on it, I get a messege "You might not have permission to use the network resource..." Can you please help me on how to make the network work. BTW one computer runs Win XP Home and the other one XP Pro.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Desktop to laptop connection

have you shared any folders or files on either of the computers. Are they both in the same WorkGroup. Do you have the same Usernames and Passwords on each machine.

How do i go about connecting my laptop to my desktop. I want to be able to move files (and programs) from one m/c to another and if possible share an internet connaection. What cables do i need , where do I plug them in...etc etc. Both m/c use winXP home. And both m/c are less than 2 years old....Also can my laptop be set up to access the internet using a mobile fone..for use while away from home. Any help would be appreciated...(keep it simple guys, ime no expert)...Cris

Answer:desktop and laptop connection

Easiest way: get a network card for both and a crossover cable. With only two machines there should be no problems or special software necessary (especially with winXP).

I have my work laptop with Windows XP and my home desktop with Windows ME. I remember years ago (with older versions on Windows) I was able to connect both with a parallel cable and a program called Laplink or something similar.

Is there a way to get this done with above operating systems and is there software around to deal with that (either commercial or even better shareware/freeware).

Many thanks for your efforts

I'm doing some work from home today and trying to get on the internet from my work laptop so I can access the VPN. I've got online using this laptop before from other locations away from work: someone else's home, hotel, etc...

I have road runner cable modem at home. Internet connection works fine on my home PC. But, if I take the same cat5 cable that is plugged into my PC, and plug it into the laptop, I can't connect to the internet. I get the "limited or no connectivity" message. I don't get it. :banghead

type ipconfig/all
copy that into a post so we can see your ip configuration

I have been reading through other threads but I couldn't find an answer. I have a desktop and a laptop. I can't get wireless or a wired connection to the router so I need to use my laptop to connect to the internet in the short term. I have connected to the computers using an ethernet cable. I can get to local fine but no internet.

I have attempted to bridge the two connection but when I click on resolve it says there is an IP conflict. I can't see where.

I have also tried ICS but it keeps saying there was an error when attempting to enable it although I did manage to allow it to connect at one point before it reverted back to not working it still wouldn't allow the desktop internet access. All services are running.

HiHow can I set up my laptop on a DUN when I am in America and connect it to my Desktop which is on broadband in UK both machines are using XP Pro. I wish to have access via my laptop to the files on my desktop machine. Hopefully the procedure will not be a heavy memory user as the laptop would struggle.

Answer:Remote connection from laptop to desktop

Provided your broadband connection has a static ip the easiest way is to use the FTP server part of Internet Information Services (one of the windows components on the XP pro cd). You'll have to be careful when configuring this however, make sure you don't allow anonymous access and use a strong password. You'll also need to check you have port 21 open for incoming connections if you are behind a firewall. Only share the files you need, not the whole computer.

Hi everyone, well I just got a new laptop today and I've spent hours trying to connect it.It's running on Windows Vista, my Desktop is Windows XP.My Desktop is connected via a crossover cable from my computer, to my mums. Therefore my internet connection is running off my mums. When I got my laptop, basically I just pulled the crossover cable out, which obviously disconnected my Desktop, and I put it into my laptop. Before that, the laptop said 'You are not connected to any networks.' or something along those lines. After, it said I was connected to a "Unknown Connection" ? I think it said unknown, maybe it said unverified :S I can't remember..But anyway, it had 3 pictures. 1. USER-PC (This Computer.) - The laptop.it then had a line, which was marked green, going over to the connection it was connected to. So..2. Unverified/Unknown (whatever it is.) Connection. So it was telling me it had successfully connected to this connection. But then it had this.3. Internet.and it had a line going from Unknown/Unverified connection to Internet. and it had a big red cross over it..So now it's telling me it isn't connected to the internet, but is connected to the network?Gosh :S I don't know. That confused me even just typing it.Does anyone know whats wrong? What I have to do?And please, if you do, please give explanations and solutions in detail. Networking is not my thing, as you can probably tell. Thanks a bunch. :) x

First I apologize if this has been mentioned and a solution already posted.. searched, but couldn't find an answer.

I have a home network, desktop running Vista Ultimate with a hard connection to a linksys-n wireless router and a laptop running Vista Home Premium. Network Discovery is on for both computers and the printer is wired to the desktop. Both the desktop and laptop have all permissions fully enabled and all drives are fully shared

Nothing has changed on desktop or laptop (software or hardware) other than normal Windows updates and network has been up and running for over a year. When I go to network and click on the desktop computer "HOME", the laptop can see and access all 5 drives and the printer. If I've re-booted the laptop, all I have to do is go to network and click on the desktop name and log in with the desktop ID and password, and again, everything on the desktop is visible and the printer is accessible.

Now, starting a couple of weeks ago, I can see the desktop name on the laptop, but can't connect... and after a few minutes the following error message pops up

\\HOME is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions.

The specified network name is no longer available..

I check in the Network and Sharing Center on the desktop and it still says Network Discovery is on. Have tried turning it off and back on again and ... Read more

Answer:Laptop looses connection to desktop

When the problem occurs, let's see this for each of the two machines.
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands, one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

Note that there is a space before the -n or the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the - or / in the following commands.

NBTSTAT -n

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Appreciate some assistance.

Found a parallel cable, while browsing at Best Buy, used to connect a desktop to a laptop (PC to PC File Transfer/DB25 Male/Male Parallel), made by Belkin. It is supposed to allow the sharing of CD-ROM drives, modems, etc. through the Direct Cable Connection of W9x.

However, if the desktop has an operating system, and the laptop does not, any ideas whether such a cable allows the laptop to use the CD-ROM on the desktop?

If this cable works, might save lots of aggravation.

Answer:desktop to LAPTOP connection wireless problem

Well, the first thing you need is a wireless broadband router. Next, you need to determine if your desktop has wireless capability, my guess is no. Is there any reason you don't want to connect the desktop with a wired connection, it's much more reliable and will be required for initial configuration of the router anyway.

Hello all!

So, I've done this in the past but I can't seem to get the magic configuration down correctly in order to get this done.

My setup is: I live in a two family house, I have a laptop upstairs which uses my friend's wireless network downstairs.

I also have a desktop PC that has no connection so I would like to use the laptop's ICS functionality in order to use the desktop from time to time.

I have the laptop, an Ethernet cable and a good, working wireless connection.

How do I achieve this?

Thanks!

Hello,

I need the "networking for dummies" guide to connecting my PC and laptop, with the primary goal being to sync files and a secondary goal of shared internet access.

I found some really great software that allows you to sync files and outlook profiles (easy2sync and easy2sync for outlook). This is important to me for when I travel. I want to be able to sync the laptop before I hit the road.

All that stands in my way is actually getting the 2 computers together!

Here are some details:

Desktop: Dell Dimension, running Win XP Home
Laptop: Dell Latitude, running Win XP Pro

The Desktop has an ethernet connection with high speed access through Qwest. There is only one ethernet card (the one the internet connection comes in through.

There are two USB ports open on the desktop, and the laptop has a docking station with an ethernet port on it, and there's also a couple USB ports open on the laptop.

SO... given all of that... can I do the following:

1) get a USB --> ethernet adapter for one of the desktops open USB ports?

2) use a crossover cable (rather than a regular ethernet cord) to connect the two computers

??

is there a better way to physically connect the 2?

OK... AFTER THEY ARE "HOOKED UP" physically... what do I do then to establish the connection/network.

If there is a thread describing this, let me know! I just couldn't find one that really laid it out in simple "newbie" terms.

Thanks so much in advance for your... Read more

I'm trying to set up a shared Internet connection:Laptop functions as a host and receives Internet through Wireless (Linksys) PCMCIA adaptor (Fixed IP adress)Desktop has a VIA Ethernet NIC and is set to DHCPClean installation of Windows XP SP2 on the  DesktopLaptop has a USB network Adaptor with a crossover cable hooked to the VIA Ethernet NICWhy is Windows XP making this more difficult than it should be? It was VERY easy in Windows 98(SE), but I can't seem to get it done in Windows XP.. Could someone walk me through the steps I need to take? And yes, I looked it up on Microsoft.com but all I got was a picture of a crazy old lady that told me the exact same thing that's in the Help & Support files of Windows XP. And there's a reason I disabled that service! Oh, and the stupid Network Connection wizard doesn't work. Has that thing ever worked for anyone?  :-?

Answer:Sharing Internet Connection Laptop -> Desktop (XP)

It looks like you are attempting to use ICS but expecting an IP address from the router. It isn't working because the secondary nic on the laptop has no connection to the router. I don't know if this will work, but the only possibility I see is to set up the laptops host file to send the windows internal IP to the wireless cards IP. If it connects that way, the two computers would essentially be sharing the same IP address. I would use a wireless PCI card for the desktop. Works great for me.

Ok, this is a long shot so don't rack your brains too hard over this.

I've got a wireless router on the second floor of the house. My bedroom has been moved to the basement. In the basement are two computers, a laptop and a desktop. There is no cat5 in the basement yet to get the desktop on the network.

My question is this, can I share the wireless connection of the laptop and run a short cable from the laptop to the desktop to share the internet connection?

Let me know, thanks in advance!

Answer:Laptop's wireless connection shared with a desktop.

I'd just spend 40 bucks on a wireless card for the desktop, but a crossover cable-ethernet to ethernet- and a network bridge on the laptop might work. I've never tried to 'piggyback' off a wireless connection, but I don't see why you couldn't.

That said, greater minds than mine may see why you couldn't...I'd hang around for more input.

Pretty sure they'd have to be in ad-hoc mode, then you'd have to have some way to route the packets from the desktop out to your ethernet connection or just have a proxy server setup on your machine. Oh, and a statically set IP on the laptop.

Hiya. For a while I've been experiencing that my download and upload speeds seem to vary wildly while on my computer, however they always seem to be MUCH lower than on my laptop. When using speedtest.net my laptop tends to average around 25 mbps downloading and 15 mbps uploading. Occasionally my desktop will peak and be slightly better (best I've seen today is 37.55 mbps and 19.03 mbps uploading) but the grand majority of the time it seems to hover at around 5 mbps download and 1 or 2 mbps upload. I don't understand why this is. Things I have tried:
Updating to Windows 10 on desktop (not that I am on my laptop)
Updating the drivers for my TRENDnet 300Mbps Dual Band Wireless N USB Adapter wireless adapter (tried, no need as they're up to date)
Turning off power saving mode (I don't know why this was enabled on a desktop but it was)
Turning off the windows option to "disconnect this device to save power"
Cleaning in the inside of my desktop tower
Changing my IPv4 DNS server values
And I have also tried running a full virus scan, malware scan and uninstalling every program I installed in the last month

And I know it is almost certainly not interference due to the fact that my laptop sits directly above my PC tower, both a whole floor away from the router, and the laptop does okay. For the sake of checking I have tried moving the laptop to a different room but that is not the cause of the problem. In addition to the speedtest.net results ... Read more

Hi! I hope I'm in the right forum. We've recently had RidgeviewTel Wireless Internet service installed in our home (have only had dial-up before). They ran the cable from the rooftop antenna to the house, and then hooked it to a wireless modem. Then from the modem, they ran a DSL cable to the e-machine T6524 desktop with Windows XP. The installer guys did NOT install any software on the desktop along with the modem installation. Just as is, that whole system ran fine. Then, this weekend, we purchased and installed a NetGear Wireless G Router to the kaboodle, so that my new Gateway laptop with Windows Vista could access the wireless internet. Working with a NetGear rep on the telephone to walk us through the process, we connected the desktop, via DSL cable, to the router, and the router to the wireless modem (via DSL cable). Again, we didn't install any software. Everything worked okay for a couple days, then the desktop couldn't connect to the internet, while the remote laptop could. Neither e-machines nor netgear could help us solve the problem. I reviewed a few forums on this site (GREAT SITE) and saw a couple times where it was suggested to turn off any firewalls. While I was typing this message, my husband deleted all of Norton off his desktop, and he could connect to the internet. So, after all that, my questions have actually changed. And they are these: 1) why would he have been able to connect to the internet for a few days, then not all of a sudde... Read more

Answer:New wireless connection, laptop works, desktop doesn't

A DSL cable is a telephone cable; I'm sure you meant ethernet cable from modem to router and from router to computer. Might save some confusion in the future.

Anti-virus protection is a necessity.

With a router, anti-virus, anti-spyware and some caution about what links you click on you need no 3rd party firewall. The Windows XP SP2 and Vista firewalls also give reasonable protection w/o the complexities of the 3rd party firewalls.

Some of those firewalls seem to get reconfigured (and start blocking stuff they didn't before) when they are updated (usually automatically). If you want to use it just configure it again to allow LAN access or whatever is needed. They don't update all that often.

If I missed any of your questions, please try smaller paragraphs next time.

I currently have a desktop that has access to the internet but it also has a wireless card. I was wondering what I can do to make the wireless card share its internet so that my laptop can use it? The desktop is directly connected to the cable modem.

This will be done via Windows XP, so I've been messing around with ICS but I can't get the laptop to detect it. I get the errror that: "An error occured while Internet Connetion Sharing was being enabled. ICS cannot be enabled due to an IP address conflict on the network. ICS requirs ethe host be configured to use 192.168.0.1. Please ensure that no other client on the network is configured to use 192.168.0.1." I can get the wireless card in the desktop to connect to the laptop via ad hoc though.

What security issues should I worry about? There are tons of other wireless users nearby and I only want a certain laptop to be able to see and access the desktop wireless card.

Answer:Share laptop and desktop connection/alltel aircard

"I am just confused about the wiring ..."

Connect the two PCs directly with an ethernet cable; if neither port is auto-sensing it must be a cross-over.

Or if you want to use the router as a switch follow these instructions, with your PC with the internet access being the primary. You will not need a cross-over cable.

JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

Ok so I have 1 Wireless laptop, 1 Desktop computer and 1 Linksys Wireless Router.

I'm currently getting wireless internet from my neighbor with my laptop.

My objective is to share this wireless internet through my Linksys Wireless Router Via connected Ethernet port to my desktop which is also connected via Ethernet to the router.

It looks like this:

(Wireless AP >>> Laptop):----:Linksys Router:----esktop Computer

The problem here is getting internet from my laptop to my desktop.

Ive tried a few things on my router but they failed and also just connecting everything together also fails.

So how do I go about this? All help is welcome.

I'm guessing you didn't read the TSG Rules about this activity.
# WiFi "Piggybacking" / "Wardriving" - We do not support the act of using someone else's Internet without permission. Also, please note that almost every ISP prohibits sharing your Internet connection with another home, and we will not assist you in breaking their rules.Click to expand...

Answer:my connection speed sucks on one laptop but is good on my other and desktop

With absolutely no information about your equipment listed we really wouldn't know where to start. Please list exact manufacturer, models of the computers, and the same for the Modem and Router if it is not part of the Modem. Also you should request that a Moderator move this to the Networking Forum where you will likely get better responses.

Okay I have this:
1. A Laptop with Wi-Fi
2. A Desktop without Wi-Fi card
3. An ADSL modem with Wi-Fi and 4 RJ-45 jacks

Now I can use Internet with connecting my Laptop to my modem via Wi-Fi.

I can use Internet on my Desktop via the RJ-45/Cable. But I am not able to use internet on both machines simultaneously.
Now:
1. I want to know how can I share my internet connection on both machines.
My ISP is BSNL (India) and it require a username and password to connect to Internet.
2. Can I share files without buying any extra equipment?

Please reply as soon as possible.
Thanks!

Answer:No 2.1 Audio option in Realtek HD AUdio Manager

A 2.1 speaker system uses "Stereo". There is no specific setup for 2.1.

A 2.1 speaker system only uses the Green speaker jack, which is 2 channel (stereo). Other systems such as 5.1 or 7.1 use more than just the Green speaker jack and have setups for those.

Hello, guys. I've purchased the 4170CTO (T420s) without a bluetooth option. After a while I've decided that I need bluetooth.According to the manuals I've found that I need FRU 60Y3271 and I've ordered it from Amazon. But when the item came, I've found strange things.First - this item was already on the board (so, I've paid for the FRU in vain).Second - the item doesn't work. It looks like it is some kind of 'disabled', or 'locked'.Changing the on-board copy of the bluetooth subcard to the one just purchased hasn't work. The bluetooth option is enabled in bios ('security - ports' section). What else could I do to solve the issue?Or, do I need something else to engage the option which wasn't selected when I've purchased the laptop?

Answer:How to add the bluetooth option in t420s?

You need the bluetooth software and access connections installed. Then you hit Fn+F5 and enable bluetooth. Once enabled the device will appear in Windows.

Answer:bluetooth option not there in win10

Hi: What model wireless netowork adapter does your notebook have? If you don't know, go to the device manager, click to expand the network adapters device manager category and there you will see the name and model # of the wireless network adapter. You have to install the corresponding model bluetooth driver for the model wlan card your notebook has. If you have already done that, and there is no bluetooth radio showing up, then most likely the bluetooth radio on the wireless card has died on you. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP technical support for further assistance.

How to enable and set a cellular connection as "metered" in windows 10. The option is inactive.

Answer:Set as Metered Connection option inactive for Cellular connection. How do I enable it?

Any Wi-Fi connection can be set as metered. If you have connected your cellular device via USB or Ethernet, the option will not be available to set it as metered.
If you are sharing your cellular connection over Wi-Fi, then the option should be available.

Hi there

Just wondering if this is possible

On Desktop computer have OODLES of storage and multi-media file but slow Wifi card.

Laptop (new) has mega fast Wifi - AC 5GHZ. Almost as fast as LAN.

Want to chromecast some movies to a TV in a friends house.

Can I direct Wire the laptop to the desktop so I can share the multimedia files and then use the laptops fast Wifi to beam it to the remote TV via chromecast.

I can't run Lan cables all over the place - but if a direct connection can allow me to use the WIFI adapter of the laptop then problem solved.

What sort of cable do I need -- I don't believe you can just stick a bit of Lan cable between the two computers (or can you).

Years ago there was a thing called LAPLINK -- relied on old serial COM ports --that would be too slow - and in any case no COM ports on these computers.

Any ideas --I don't care if it's "Heath Robinson" --it's not a permanent setup - but we want to watch a load of movies etc and his wifi isn't fast enough (the ISP internet service is superfine and his router is capable of high wifi speed), --We've been banished to his shed where the computer is - because the women want to do something else !!!!.

Note - normal sharing works but is a bit of an abysmal failure since I can only get about 500 Kbs -not Mbs !!!!!) from his wifi card on the desktop so normal sharing is TOO slow. The data won't get delivered to the laptops wifi fast enough to watch the movies without re-buffe... Read more

Hi

I have been searching for an answer for this one but hit a brick wall with it so I hope you can help.

I have just moved to a new flat and my broadband connection won't be up for another 8 weeks. I have a desktop pc and a sony vaio notebook with a wlan adapter. I have spoken to my neighbour above and he has a wlan connection, he's been kind enough to give me the WEP key to access this until mine is installed.

I have tried this on the laptop, I can access it fine from a couple of the rooms. However my main pc is my desktop and this only has LAN cards I have attempted to share the WLAN connection with my desktop using ICS however the router is configured on 192.168.0.1 and Windows needs this IP to enable shared internet on the notebook. I can't really ask my neighbour to change this just so I can share the connection to my desktop.

I have managed to create a lan connnection between the two machines so I can RDP into the notebook to browse the web.

I need to know if there is a way I can configure the network connetions within xp to allow the connection to be shared and if not, If there is some kind of proxy application that will allow me to share the connection with my desktop, I have had a look at winproxy but it's all a bit over my head.

I know it would be much simpler to buy a WLAN card for my desktop but this is only temporary so I don't really want to spend the money on something I will never use again.

Can anyone help with this.

I'm trying to connect my Dell desktop to my Sony laptop via a network cable. Neither computer is picking up that there is a connection. I've tried two different network cables both of which worked when I previously hooked up my laptop to other computers. I've even gone as far as installing a new network card in the desktop in case the existing port is knackered for whatever reason. All connections are enabled and all devices according to windows are working properly. Any idea's?
