Question: Word document corruption after Windows 10 installation

After installing Windows 10, I reopened some Word documents that have been an ongoing project for the past 8 years. They are long and complex documents including images, artwork and Chinese characters. I found that the formatting of these documents has been completely ruined! Everything has been moved around, some characters have been layered onto of one another and to top it off, the two fonts used for the entirety of the documents have been changed to another plainer font. After checking the Word fonts, lots of them have disappeared, including the ones I use, and when I tried to import one of the old fonts in from a back up file, Word simply did not recognise it!
Does anyone know what has happened? Does Windows 10 automatically update to a newer version of Word when you install it? Is there any way to revert back to the way these documents were before the update? Manually reformatting them will take an estimated 1-2 years of work
I tried looking at doing a system restore but there are no pre-saved restore points so haven't had any luck there, don't even know if it would work anyway...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

First of all: The upgrade process does not change your documents. They only are not displayed correctly currently. If you have not overwritten the documents after doing the upgrade, you should really make a backup of these files! They then most likely will still be perfectly OK - but after you save changes on your Windows 10 machine, Word might well save the changed fonts and the broken layout, which then really ruins the file.

According to what you write I believe that you have to make sure that the missing fonts are properly installed in Windows. Installing the now missing fonts might already solve the biggest part of your problem.

What you need to know is the exact name of the fonts, which your document is using. If you do not know them, you can open a copy of the docx file with a ZIP program. Then look into the file word/fontTable.xml; search for "w:name" to get the names of the fonts, which are used inside the document.

If you came to Windows 10 by doing a Windows upgrade, then you will still have a folder C:\Windows.old on your system. The folder C:\Windows.old\Windows\Fonts should still contain a huge number of fonts, which you had in your old system. It is very likely that the now missing fonts are still in this folder.

There are two ways in which you can install a font: The first is a simple one. Just copy the font to the Font Directory located at C:\Windows\Fonts which will install it for the system to use. The other method is to click on the font file at its current location. It will then give you a screen that shows the font preview and there you will see the button to install the font right at the top of the screen toward the left side.

Hello all,
As a lot of people here, I have met some problems during SP1 installation (SP1 and some other updates refuse to install), so I ran the SUR tool and the result file shows some packages corruption.
The file show corruptions in packages KB2522422 & KB2536276, which I can't install.
I think that I know the reason of this corruption. In the past, my PC was crashing (BSOD) regularly, until I found that a RAM memory unit was faulty. Now my PC is rock stable.
But I remembered that 1 or 2 times the BSOD happened during some Windows updates installation

I have also run the SFC tool : no problem detected

Hello all,

Yesterday, Microsoft sent out a new batch of updates through Windows Update. However, I ran into issues when I tried to manually install the Update to Windows 7 file (KB2868116). Namely, the update seemingly hung on me; I left the update on for 20-30 minutes, but it never progressed beyond this file. I tried clicking the "stop installation" button, but nothing happened even after several minutes. Not knowing what to do, I forced a restart of my computer. I was able to boot to windows fine and was able to then manually install the other update files fine. Windows, so far, seems to be working fine; I can boot to it, run my programs and shut down fine. Windows Update doesn't show the offending update as having installed, and the update still shows up as available, downloaded, and ready to install (I right clicked on the specific update, and "hid" it to prevent it from trying to install when I shut down). I also did NOT get any error messages. However, I'm still worried that I may have broken something when I restarted my computer.

My questions are, how worried should I be that something got corrupted? If I should be worried, how do I check to see if the update corrupted anything and how do I fix it if I find something. Also, while I have the update hidden and am preventing it from installing, the actual download is still on my computer. Is the anyway to get rid of it?

An update that is not installed will affect your computer - and is best left alone, since there are interdependencies in the downloads.
If/when MS revise the update, it will reappear in the offered list, and whichever files are not required will be deleted while those that are still need won't have to be re-downloaded.

A document down loaded from a web site by Firefox had text and page numbers missing but headings and images were there. The originator of the document then sent a copy as an attachment to an email. I used Adobe Acrobat to down load it. That copy was also corrupted.

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.

Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.

I am running XP and Word 2000 and Nortons. Word will crash if you leave the document open for a while (there is no specific time frame) and then select close (icon). The error - Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. The details are: AppName: winword.exe

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.

I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.

If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Firstly I could put up with it but is now just a nusiance.

This is just one of those odd quirks I have run into. I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...

1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?

2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?

I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.

If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.

Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.

As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

This might be kind of tricky.

We're trying to streamline our RFQ-to-Quote process, which currently utilizes a combination of digital forms and hand-written forms passed among several departments. My boss asked me to modify the RFQ form to save him some typing (because he has to retype all the information in the final Quote), and I--not understanding the complexity of the process--very stupidly told him that it could be done fairly simply using form fields and bookmarks. He's been kind enough to grant me a lot of leniency because for him anything would be better than the current situation, so as long as I can improve on what we use now, he'll be happy.

I thought about creating form templates for each of the departments, then as the original RFQ circulated from one department to the next subsequent forms would be appended to it to create a rolling document. I'm not too happy with the that idea; there's all sorts of room for user error. I thought about creating a single document template containing every department's form, but a) I don't want any single department to be able to modify information gathered during another department's process, and b) certain departments must generate a variable number of copies of their form.

Hi all.

The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.

When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.

When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.

Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.

After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.

Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.

When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.

I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.

In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.

I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.

So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Hi all.

Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.

In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.

I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.

All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.

I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.

On my previous computer with Windows 2000, I was able to make incremental backups of a Microsoft Word document while it was being created by me. The advantage of this was that if an "accident" happened and the document was lost or corrupted before it was completed or saved to a folder, the partially completed document could be retrieved from a special folder somewhere in C-drive. I was able to specify how often a new backup was created (ex.: every 3 minutes, ex.; every 10 minutes, etc.). It is possible that this special folder also contained backups of all previously saved Word documents, which were also being re-backed up every few minutes. -- I cannot find any reference to this on my new computer (Windows XP and Microsoft Word 2002) in the Windows search engine, or in the Word user interface "Help". I cannot remember how I found this feature on my previous (W~2000) computer. -- Thanks

Dear all previously i have posted for Trojan issue and subsequently received responses from your team on time Now i am interested to know or get rid of issue with word 2003, installed in windows home basic 7 platform.......I work in several Word 2003 documents (on Windows 7 platform) at the same time. When I open the first document it stays open (maximized). If I open a second document, the document opens, but then immediately minimizes down to the task bar. Same result if I open a third document. If I click on the minimized documents to open them again, they open and stay open. why I am seeing a button for each open document in the Task Bar. with Thanks

Hello,
I used mail merger to create 25 letters to different locations and different people. The source used for the names and address's were from an excel file. I used "Edit Individual Documents" in order to get all the letters in one document. Now the problem is i need a backup of each letter on my computer and i have no clue if its even possible to save each page in the master document as a unique document. If not, is there a way of saving each unique document of a mail merger?

Hi,

I work at a small non-profit and we have updated two computers with new computers running Windows 7. We use MS Word 2003. I have checked all threads on forum related to this issue, but nothing seems to correct our problem. I would be grateful for any help.

Description of issue: With a Word document open, one should be able to click "File" > "Send To" > Mail Recipient As Attachment", or any of the other mail options, and have the email composition window of Thunderbird pop up. What happens is that Word is attempting to send the attachment via Windows Live Mail. The computer basically freezes. If you try and abort or get out of Word, and error pops up stating you can't close Word until the email has been sent. Finally, you have to force a shut down of the computer.

Internet Explorer shows Thunderbird as default email client. I have check all of the other obvious places for setting the default email client, but I can't seem to find a conflict anywhere on the computer showing Windows Live Email as default client.

As a side note, this employee was using Outlook Express as their email client prior to the computer upgrade and all setting were imported into Windows Live Mail, which was initially used. The employee did not like Windows Live Mail, so I installed Thunderbird. It is used as the default email client and the only issue has been with Word. Additionally, I know that the document could be sent from Windows Explorer by right-cli... Read more

I was working on a Word document that someone sent me by email in form of rar and saved the document. I now can't find the revised file and I have lost about 8 hours of work. Any ideas on where I can find this file? I looked in the email that was originally sent, but it is still the old file. I have also done searching on my computer with no luck. Help, I'm desperate!!! If you were only hitting "Save" and not "Save As" the document is likely, unfortunately, gone. You can try opening Word by itself and going through recent documents to see if it shows up. If you opened it directly from the email and the email was in Outlook, you might be able to find it in the Outlook Secure Temp Folder. To get to this folder, the easiest way is to send yourself a PDF file, open the PDF from the email then go to File | Properties and on the General tab (this is from memory, so I might be off a little bit) you'll find a location that you can click on. In this folder, you have a slight chance of finding the modified file. The only other option you have, that I can think of, would be digging through your temp folders hoping to find a .tmp or .doc file in there that has the content, but I give that about a .01% chance of happening. I don?t know what you mean with laptop keeps sending the document but if you have this issue with office word or some other office application, try to check some forum where you can find discussion about similar theme.

I can not give you any precise answer but it is maybe because of office specific settings or you press accidentally some key on the keyboard and on this way interrupt symbols entering.

I have enrolled in college after 35 years away.  My professor is posting all documents in Word form.   I have Works.  Can I convert them to open into Works?  Can anybody walk me through it step by step?  I have Word installed, but haven't "bought" the program (free trial that came on computer).  When I try to save the word document and change the save as, I don't get any options except Microsoft Word 97 and All Files.

URGENT!! (Isn't it always?) I need to convert a multiple tab excel document to a word document. I read that I can save as a pdf, then convert to word but I have only Adobe Reader. If this can be done, is there a way to conserve the original format and the links in the excel doc?I would prefer leaving in excel but the customer needs a word document. Also, just in case I can convince to leave in excel -- is there a way to print the excel file as one document without printing each tab separately? Hi,
I have problem, when I put link to .XPS document in MS word document, i can't open this link, nothing hapens , links to other file types works fine. XPS document opens without problem with IE when opening file from folder. I tried to lower security setings in IE hidden security zone "my computer" , but this wont help. There is no problem in Windows 7 with xps links. But i need it to work in Vista. I think it's some kind of security problems. Any ideas ?

I have a letter I send to friends and one of the sentences I had underlined. When I copied and pasted it into my Mozilla email compose the underlining disappeared.

If I set for HTML format it would appear but now all single spacing became double spaced and all double spacing became triple spaced.

I have Mozilla as my browser with the default email program that came with it.

When I right click on my desktop or a folder, and go to New, I have the option to create a new folder, a new text document, etc, but I don't have the option to create a new Word document, even though I have Word installed on my PC and works fine.

Can someone please tell me how I can fix this problem?

Used Word 2002/2003 for reports for years with other windows programs. Now with Windows 7, I get double images when printing. Tried not spooling, no help. Will only print correctly with converted to pdf.

Hi, I've purchased a new PC with Windows 7. My old one had Windows XP. I'm having quite a challenge adapting to Windows 7...can't find what I need without having to search all over the system & on the internet.

For now, I need help on removing certain information - for lack of a better explanation. In Windows XP, I would insert the path of a document, by clicking on "insert", "auto text", "header/footer" then "filename and path". I thought I did the correct thing in the word document in windows 7 but instead I wound up creating data info that I don't want, don't know how to remove it because I can't find what I did to set it up in the first place. It prints a separate page after each document finishes printing & it has the following info to name a few:

filename, directory, template, title, subject, author, keywords, comments, creation date

Any help is appreciated.

in the document, I have to CONTINUOUSLY go back to another part where I referecnce to edit another part

What would be useful: if I could have the same document open in 2 windows!

I know I can have a split window in the same screen in the same window
But this is not what I want: I want to different windows of the same document - left and right

Does that make sense?

I have installed on my computer Office 2007.
When i opend a Word or Excel document and than try to close it i get the following error messages: "Microsoft office Word has stoped working"
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem
A Problem coused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notofy you if a solution is available.

In some cases i can not even close my word ofr excel document and only can do so by using the Task Manager!!!!

Any body knows how to solve this problem????

I'm creating a document in word 2007 at one point of the document I want to insert a link or icon that points to a separate word document, when the master document is saved both documents are saved as one file so that i can distribute it to other people not linked on a LAN. I don't need the second document to be seen but launched on a separate window when the link or icon is clicked.
Can somebody please help I've seen this on emails and PP presentations but I'm not sure if it can be done in word, I would think so!

I have a client with a problem creating new documents from the File > New > Word Document dropdown from Windows Explorer window. If I set her default font to Times New Roman it will stay for creating new documents from within Word. If she goes the other route mentioned above to create a new document it will always default to Courier. Also when she tries to save the document with the Save As item it defaults to txt instead of a .doc file. I am thinking there are two different templates for these two seperate ways of opening or creating a document.

Windows XP defaults to a double spaced style. I want to revert to using the so called "no spacing" style by default. I open up Word, change the style to "no spacing", then click the arrow on the styles ribbon and click "set as default." When I close and re-open Word however, the style is set to "normal." How do I Get the "no spacing" style to stay set as default?

I would like to open Windows Explorer, click on a CD-ROM and, from the list shown, create a document that can be inserted into Word. I would like to avoid using jpeg or gif files since I would like to be able to edit whatever is entered into the document. Is there a program out there that does this that I can download without subscribing to PC World or other mags? Shareware, pay for or freeware, I am not concerned about the program costing something, I just don't want to subscribe to a magazine just to download one item.

In Windows 10 Microsoft Word: the arrow next to Review Pane does not offer an option to remove the pane. I am only getting options to add a vertical or horizontal pane. I have edited a document and am now ready to print it. No matter how often I accept changes, remove comments etc apparently leaving my document ready for print the Review Pane pops back into view when the document is re-opened.

Hi - I am running Vista Ultimate, Windows Live Mail and Word 2000. I can not email a displayed document directly from Word. The email icon is greyed out.

I would prefer to not have to move to a later version of Word as with all Microsoft products MS seems intent on taking things that were simple and making them aggrivatingly complicated and annoying. My kingdom for a 'Don't Think For Me' button.

Anyway, rants aside, can anyone tell me:

1) Is there a way to be able to email (not as an attachment) from Word 2000 in my environment (using Windows Live Mail).
2) Which versions of Word can you email from using Windows Live Mail? For example, if I upgrade to Word 2007 can I then email? Or from Wird 2008?

I really need this feature as it is a backbone of our internal documentation and reporting system.... I will suffer a Word upgrade if I have to, but just want to make sure it will work before I take the plunge.

I have personal document files that I cannot open.  I get the following error message: "This file is unable to run because of missing or corrupted files.  Contact your computer manufacturer."  What do I need to do to correct this?  How in the world do I contact my manufacturer other than through HP Support?  My operating system is Windows 7.

I have a 304 page .docx document in Word 2007 on a Vista-run PC. The document itself is fine, but when I copy it to my laptop which runs on Windows 7 the format changes with the result that the document shrinks to 285 pages. Also, some of the text overflows onto the next line. The result is that I can only edit the document on Vista whereas I would like to edit the document on both machines. Does anyone know what might be causing this problem?

Hey,
I have upgraded to windows 10 and now hate my life as a direct consequence of this, as nothing is easy or straight forward!!!
I cannot upload word documents to the internet, hell I cannot attach them as a file to an email. I suspect I cant upload anything and it makes have a computer utterly redundant so thank you very much, Apple here I come!!!
I am guessing I cannot be alone with my hatred for windows 10 as its about as compatible as a chocolate tea pot. So please any insights on how to solve the current issue before the January sales may just save you a loyal customer.

Where is the Word document? C:\? Removable storage?
If you could list what steps you are taking and where it fails... I have no way of knowing how you are set up and what you are doing...
FWIW, I can upload/download/sideload things like documents/zip files/photos/videos/music just fine on Windows 10.

Since I upgraded to Windows 10; I have noticed that all my older Word documents have been made "Read Only". Despite changing the properties to correct this. Word still loads them as Read Only documents and will not let me make changes. I also noticed; that since the upgrade, despite my account having FULL ADMINISTRATOR rights and permissions, Every action I take to attempt to correct any issues pops up the message that I need administrator rights to complete the action. The problems I experience on my Laptop don't apply to back-ups of the documents on external storage devices. Is there a simple fix for this? Or does anyone here have a solution; has noticed the same issue or have Microsoft screwed up yet again. (I remember Windows 95, ME and Vista. Some people never seem to learn from their mistakes).

In Word 2010 there is a direct option to share and save any word file to SkyDrive directly simply by configuring your Windows Live ID. To Save your any doc file to SkyDrive follow the steps given below one by one and get your docment saved on your account directly from your desktop:
1. Open any Word document which you want to save to skydrive.
2.Click on File menu and then select Save to SkyDrive.
3. In the right panel th SkyDrive login page will start retrieving. As the page retrieves it will prompt you for Login credentials of yourWindows Live ID. Just give your ID and Password and login.
4. As you get login you will see your folders already present on your SkyDrive. Now you can save the document file to that folders or you can create a new folder and then click on SaveAs.
Now you can share and use your documents from anywhere in the world directly from your desktop via Office 2010. Happy Windows Computing !!!

The problem occurred without warning after many previous instances of trouble-free copying of Notepad text into MS Word 2010. Here?s an example of what happens:-1. I type a sentence into Notepad.2. I then attempt to copy and paste it into an open MS Word file.3. The cursor in the resulting MS Word file stops blinking on completion of the ?paste? process. A few seconds later, MS Word indicates ?not responding?.4. I press CTRL + ALT + DEL to open the Task Manager.5. On doing this and clicking on the MS Word document in the Task Manager and selecting ?End Task?, a message box stating ? WINWORDC.EXE is not responding?, with 3 option buttons, pops up. One of the 3 option buttons is ?Close program?.6. When I click on ?Close program?, another message box pops up saying ?WINWORDC is trying to recover your information?. Then, a few seconds later, the MS Word document closes (but without saving the text copied from the Notepad file).

I recently upgraded to Windows 10. I use Office 2010. Since my upgrade, at least twice I have lost final versions of documents. Last night I saved the document using the "save" button. The computer auto-shut down and restarted overnight to install system upgrades. The auto-recovery does not have my final version. Thank God I have a printed copy so I can reconstruct the document from there.
Two questions: How do I locate the final version of my document? How do I prevent this annoying inconvenience from reoccurring?

I am looking for a free word processing program similar to the Windows Office program that will open a Windows office 2007 document. Are there any out there? I found and downloaded AbiWord, but I can't figure out how to open the document I need.

You should be able to click File, click Open, browse to and select the file you want to open, and that's about it. Or right click the file, select Open with.... then browse to AbiWord's EXE file (probably in Program Files\AbiWord), and click OK. You can also try OpenOffice but it's a pretty large download at 120mb for the standard version, the 'Pro' version is about twice that size.

G'day,
When I download save or display a word document which is locked some of the fonts change and this makes the documant look bad and as a result it is not paged correctly.
I am using Windows 7 and MS Office Home & Business 2010.
If I use a different computer which is XP and 2003 the document displays correctly, if I copy this to the Windows 7 PC the document font is changed.
The lock document is a form which has been locked for easy completion.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Found the problem, Windows7 and or MS Office Home & Business 2010 is missing the particular font the document wanted, it was Arial Narrow, once this font was added to the windows/font folder, the document opened correctly.

Hi,

I am developing an add-in for outlook that consists of creating a customized send button next to the standard one. when outlook is configured to use the word editor, when I add the customized send button to the command bar of the mail in edit mode, the add-in is also added in word document. The reason is that the word editor is activated in outlook. How can I tell my add-in not to add the button in word as well. I don't want to deactivate the editor word. There must be a way how to detect the opened application. I searched for my problem on the internet and people said to test if the kind of the document is word mail or word document. Here's part of my code that didn't work correctly:

Are you using Microsoft Word? Or WordPad? Word uses either .doc or .docx as the file extension, WordPad uses .rtf or .txt. If you've already named & saved the file yesterday, that's the file you should be looking for. Chances are the original is still good but any changes you made today probably didn't 'stick'.

I have an old document created in Word Perfect 5.1 saved on a floppy disk. My present computer has Windows 98 and Microsoft Word. I need to edit and print the old Word Perfect document. Can it be translated to Word? Thanks.

You should be able to hit File-Open from Word. Change the files of type (at the bottom of the dialog box) to "all files, *.*" and just double-click the Wordperfect document. It should automatically convert it.

After that, if I were you, I'd go to Tools-Options, Compatibility tab. Change compatibility to Word document. Then, hit ctrl-a to select the entire document, go to Format-Paragraph and make sure line spacing is single; then change the font to Arial, Times new roman, or other Word font, as opposed to the old Wordperfect fonts.

I have made a brochure (containing a table)in MS Word97 in *.doc format. The brochure needed to be transferred to my mother-in-law's PC for printing as we don't have a printer. Anticipating compatibility issues (we use MS Office on a system running Win98SE; she uses MS Works on a system running WinXP), I made one page and opened it on her PC. The PC read and printed my test document and I assumed it would work. I then spent the day making the brochure, FTPing and downloading it to her PC. Now when I go to open the documents, Works says that it can't read them (I tried various options - double-clicking to open; selecting different *.doc file extensions from the drop down menu etc). I downloaded the Word97 viewer from Microsoft and it, too, claims not to be able to read the documents. Is there anything I can do to make her PC recognise these documents?And why can't different Microsoft word processors read each other's file formats??? Arrrrrgh!Please help!Jill

Any version of Microsoft Word should be able to read a document from the same or an earlier version of Word. As long as you have saved the document as Word Document (*.doc). Opening the document from within Word is the safest way.

Is there a way to close a Word document in Word 2007 without going to the dropdown menu? What happened to the little 'x' in the upper right hand corner that all other Windows programs still have? I have the minimize, maximize, and large 'X', but if I am only working on 1 Word document and click the large X, the file AND Word both shutdown. Is there any way to get the little 'x' back?

Hello all,

On the 12th October I was editing a Word 2007 document on my Vista Home laptop. Throughout editing I pressed Ctrl S to save the doc over the previous version. I copied data in from several other files.
I went back yesterday to edit the document again and it has disappeared. The only version of the doc is a previous version dated 21st Sept.
I searched on all files modified after 11th Oct just in case I had saved it under another name. Not in there. The files I copied data from did come up in the search results though, soi knwo the search function is working.
I checked the default Autosave location - not in there.
I checked the recycle bin - the doc is not in there and neither are any ~ files or autosaved files. I haven't emptied my recycle bin for months.
I cannot find a word doc modified afetr the 11th October.

Can it really just have disappeared? It is my MBA dissertation paper and I worked on this edit for an awful lot of hours.

Word 2016 is not using the up to date word document. When I go to save after opening up a brand new word doc. It tells me it will be updated to the latest word doc. I am using Office 2016 Pro on Windows 10 64bit HP laptop. Any advice would be welcome.

Just so I have it straight, when you say "opening up a brand new document" do you mean you have a blank document that you open, say on your desktop (as a shortcut), or does this happen when you click File then New.

Have you checked Options => Save to see if there is an option box to control this behavior?

Any one ever run into this one? I've got a client (Law Firm) that uses the TrackChanges functionality in Office 2010 for PC and Office 2011 for Mac. The Attorney uses a Mac and the assistant is on PC. This issue has occurred for 4 separate documents now, from old Docs used as templates for new actions to freshly formatted docs with just the text copied to a new file and reformatted. Once the Doc comes back to the assistant, the ORIGINAL text has random corruptions that the changes are all available to apply themselves to. The changes can reviewed, applied, and added to, but the original text has gone wacky. Almost like random characters get changed or spacing is added and/or missing.

I'm assuming that there is an issue between PC and Mac, as assistants all on PC have been able to pass change tracked documents around w/o issue.

Forgive me, but I'm to the extremely frustrated point with this issue... also note I'm no computer guru but I do know a fair share about how to navigate my way around a PC.

I work at a small company and our office has 5 computers on our network. One of those computers acts as a server which holds all of our files, templates, etc. We mapped the C drive and shared it on the other 4 computers; I am on one of those 4.

Our issue is quite complicated as it doesn't always happen the same or routinely. It's hard to know the right place to begin even.

We have a book we make for our jobs, consisting of about 8 pages - one day we decided to combine those 8 separate pages into one template - we did a copy/paste of all the pages and saved as a template. In all the 8 pages have a range of formatting from basic typing to tables, to drawing canvas, to shapes, to form fields. We protect the document in order to fill in the forms.
Upon using said template we found that when sometimes when we tried to print it, it would print pages 1-2 just fine then stop at page 3. Trying to further investigate I tried printing each page alone and all BUT page 3 printed. To me this said page 3 was somehow 'corrupt'. HOWEVER - trying to print it on the other office printer proved to be successful, so maybe it's a printer issue? Keep reading...

I have a 142 page document that has become corrupted (it prints up to about page 136, then word crashes).I've tried deleting pages 135-142, but when trying to do any actions like cut, delete, print on these pages word just crashes.Are there any tools out there that i can run yo try and 'clean' the document?

as of yet i have not found any help with this problem.when i download winrar(latest) i get the following:"some installation files are corrupt. please download a fresh copy and retry the installation"on certain random cds/dvds that i try to install i also get a file is corrupt error.when i did have winrar installed before i recovered my system i could not extract files from .rar folders...i got a file corrupt error along with crc (which i understand to be cyclic redundancy check).this is my second base unit.all that i have done above has been carried out successfully on 3 other different pcs and notebooks so i am 90% sure this is just my system and not a corrupt cd or downloaded file.my pc is less than 2 weeks old and i have had an engineer out twice from pcworld where i purchased as well as a base unit change.my first base unit had the above problems as well as 3 'faulty' drives (by this i mean the engineer replaced the drive twice and it was faulty, it disappeared from myComputer, wouldnt open etc..)i was wondering id there is anyone out there who can help me with this problem?my pc model is a 3GHz philips free-line MT1100thanks in advance for any suggestions

I was writing a long article on Word 2000 and decided I'd better back it up to A: So I Hit the "Save As" and directed the file to A: (There was plenty of room on the disk.) When I tried to open my original file it was truncated, with half a page of text appearing at the top and everything else just empty boxes or squares. I checked the properties of the file, and the word count was what I expected, except I couldn't see these words any more and have no idea where they went or where the boxes came from. About 1200 words. Fortunately, everything was fresh enough in my mind that I could rewrite from where the text broke off, slightly differently than the original, of course. I'm curious about what happened. Where did those boxes come from and where did the words go, and how do I prevent this from happening in the future.

BTW, the backup a: was also corrupted only more so. No text, only random boxes when I opened the file with Word.

Any insights?

Heed my words, okay? They come from five years of hearing people in heartbreak mode.
NEVER USE FLOPPIES TO BACK UP ANYTHING. NEVER EVER.
Use floppies to take a not-so-important file from one place to the other.
Emailing a file to yourself is safer than a floppy.
ALWAYS keep a copy of the file on a hard drive somewhere.
Do NOT let the floppy contain the ONLY copy of that file.
Never Save a file to a floppy. ALWAYS COPY it to the floppy from your hard drive via Windows Explorer.
Never Open a file from a floppy. ALWAYS COPY it via Windows Explorer to your hard drive first.
When you save files to a floppy, the floppy must have enough room for the file and AT LEAST THAT MUCH ROOM AGAIN to create a temporary file of the original while you application access it.
The only REAL way to try to recover files from a floppy is to run a Thorough Scandisk and Defrag on it--and fixing all errors; and even then, it may not help.
Many of you who were not around when floppies were *the thing* may not know that floppies are very sensitive to cold, heat, moisture, and YES--MAGNETS. That INCLUDES the magnetic strips on the credit cards and grocery membership cards in your purse or pocket! They used to ERASE floppies by using magnets!

problems began out of the blue

When a word doc, password protected is opened, the password screen appers. My password is rejected. All passwords I can remember have been tried & rejected.

Also, when I open a word document, it appears as gibberish; similar to "wingdings" font. But the font is set to Times New Roman.

I have renamed normal.dot to old_normal.dot, then opened Word, but the problem persists.

Whenever I open a doc in Word 2003,which has a table and/or a drawing which I then modify, the file or tmp file cannot be saved, it comes up with either an error stating no permission or stating that the table is corrupted. The end result is that I either lose the whole file or sometimes just the table/drawing, since it merely saves to a tmp file with nothing in it and the original disappears. This has only started happening in the last 2 months. Prior to that - no problem. I run XP Pro with SP3 and have Office 2003. Any ideas please?

I have just had problems with Word 2003 - with saving documents and other annoyances. I tried Detect and Repair on the Help menu - then repairing from the disk - deleting Normal.dot - system restore but still no improvement. So in the end I simply uninstalled Word via Add/Remove Programs, ran a cleanup with CCleaner, and then reinstalled. Now works perfectly again.

My office is experiencing a weird problem and I can't figure out what's
happening:

On one Mac, I'll call it "Red", a Word 2001 document is created. This
document can be successfully opened on Red, a PC in the office, and at least
one other Mac here. However, this same document causes Word to crash at
least two other Macs, and on re-launch of Word, this messages comes up on
those machines:

"Word encountered file corruption while opening document.doc. Part of this
document may be recoverable. Attempt recovery now? Yes No"

Attempting recovery brings up document containing a list of garbled text,
with some names and pieces of the original text, but it is not usuable.
Sometimes, attempting recovery crashes the machine, sometimes not attempting
recovery crashes the machine.

The fact that the documents open successfully on some machines, and not on
others makes troubleshooting difficult.

All the Macs are running a version of 9.x, and all have Word 2001 installed.

Any help would be appreciated!

Is the document on a network or being sent around thru email? I have had this same problem, although it was not intraoffice but from one persons mac at home to my pc at work. I was never able to recover the document myself but another pc user was. I think it may have had to do with the fact that I was running an older version of Word but one thing someone suggested was, assuming it is being sent in an email, saving the attachment first instead of trying to open it thru the email. I know that is relatively simple and probably something you've already tried but thats my 2 cents. I would be extremely interested to hear any other solutions myself.

Can someone help with my Word 2000 issue?

When opening Word (which I have used for at least five years with no problems), the window opens as expected, showing a blank page. However, the cursur is not flashing.

When clicking on the page to commence typing, another window opens. The title bar states "Document 1 - Microsoft Word" and the rest of the window is completely blank/white. There is no Toolbar. Eventually I'm advised that it is not responding, and am given the option to "End Now".

When attempting to open a previously written document direct from Windows Explorer, the Word window opens with a plain grey background and no document. When clicking anywhere in the window, another blank page opens as above, with eventual "Not responding".

I have tried uninstalling the software completely and reinstalling, to no avail. I have tried Repair from disc, to no avail.

The only user instigated changes to my pc since last using Word successfully is the installation of Mozilla Firefox, as IE 8 was refusing to open pdf files for certain paperless billing utility accounts.

Automatic MS/Windows updates since last using Word have been for Office 2003 (I use Excel 2003), and four Windows XP security patches on 15/9.

I use Windows XP Pro, and have AVG 9 anti virus. Nothing in the latter has been changed to my knowledge, although it updates automatically.

My MoBo (ASUS A7V original) doesn't natively support >137GB HDs without SP1 or higher and the updated ATA100 Promise drivers. I had a working 160GB HD. I did a fresh reinstall of XP pro, upgraded to SP2, and also reinstalled the updated the ATA100 Promise drivers. So I was re-organizing some files and while writing to the 160 GB HD (non-boot disk) it suddenly became corrupt and unreadable. The XP disk management tool says it's "healthy," Partition Magic 8 sees the drive but has ? marks for it's size. ON reboot, the DSK check prog says "Corrupt Master File Table." All my other HDs, which are less than 137GB, have no problems.

Sucks. Maybe I should have stuck with SP1. How do I go about reactivating the partition, is possible? And what file retrieval progs are good to use? Sould I uninstall SP2 and go back to SP1?

My daughter accidentally double-clicked the Word icon in our toolbar and probably corruped Normal.dot: it's printing in Manual Feed. Now all OLD documents tell me they want to print out in Manual Feed. Properties for my HP LaserJet 4L say Upper Tray. I tried renaming Normal.dot to Normal.old, but the new Normal.dot puts it to Manual Feed. I changed the default Print properties in Word to Upper Tray, but that only affected new documents. This never happened before. Help!

Dear Tech Guys,

I have developed a template in Word 2003 and created my own styles and includes styles specifically for tables. These documents are user manuals for our clients and are complete with table of contents and range from anywhere from 25 pages to 300 pages of content.

After some updating of the content is done and the time comes to do an update to the fields, the entire document is selected and the F9 key is executed which updates the table of contents and other fields.

However, the content in the tables are corrupted. By this I mean any of the following happens or all occur:
The characters become condensed.
The characters change colour (to grey which is what our headings are defined to)
The table rows are taller
This does not always happen after an F9 update, and the actual text content is not affected nor is any of the formatting outside the tables. As I have kept older versions of the document my temporary solution each time was to delete the tables and copy and paste the old tables back into the new document.

An analysis/testing of the table formatting show no change or rectification. The font definitions within the styles I created do not have the settings to reflect the new corrupted 'look'. For example condensing is set to zero and the color is still automatic or black. Rebooting the PC or or relaunching Word does not rectify the issue.

Copying all the styles from the actual template into the document does not rectify the issue.

Hi,

I am not sure if this is possible in word, but say I have document A. I place document A within document x, document y, and document z. Is it possible to make changes to document A and have the changes updated automatically to documents x, y, and z?

The only simple way is to go to Insert, Object, Create from file and choose to insert your file as a link (these are 2003 instructions - would be similar in 2007, though.) However, you will then get a questions about the file having links and do you want to update...every time you open the file.
You could also just insert some text and hyperlink it to the other file.
Finally, someone could probably write some VBA that would insert the file and update it every time you opened it.

I have installed my Word 6 program successfully on my last computer. I am trying to install it on a newer computer with Windows 98. After inserting the first diskette and getting into SETUP, I get a prompt which reads "setup has searched your hard disk but cannot find any of the qualifying products listed on the Mocrosoft Word 6.0 box.
Choose the Locate button and select the drive or directory that contains one of the qualifying products. You may select a floppy drive if you have available the first or setup diskette from that product."

I have tried running the setup from drive A with a diskette in it
and it says setup has searched the chosen dirctory but cannot find any of the qualifying products.

Why can't I install WORD 6? It is calling it an upgrade, but I don't have it installed on this computer.

Most likely you are using an upgrade version of Word 6 which is looking for an earlier version of Word or a competing product to upgrade

Did your old computer come preinstalled with MS Works ?

Or if you have any older word processor (AmiPro, WordPerfect, etc) insert the first disk of that program and point to the drive (floppy / CD) to do the install

2 problems - think started the same time, so may be connected.Wonder if it happened about the time new Explorer was downloadedlast month or two.

Word seems to have got the outside page rulers corrupted so they show 72 something across and 58 s/th down. and paper size is wrong shape

although the paper, layout and margins on the Page setup tab show normal A4 and what I would expect them to be...and measurements in cm.

When I open an existing file, the margins are ok, but the rulers still show 72 x 58... which is not good when I'm doing precision tables.. but when I do file...new the page opens with everything wrong - margins, page size shot to pieces, but page setup tab is correct.

Have reloaded Normal.dot several times, and so I'm pretty sure it's s/th to do with the File...New code.

Have also tried changing page setup and ruler tabs as per advice, but they are correct on the boxes.

Please help - it's not the end of the world, but joly annoying!

I have LibreOffice 3.6 installed on my Windows 7 computer. I am not using MS Office at all. However I still exclusively use .doc files for Writer because everyone else I correspond with uses Office.


I want to add the option to create a "new" .doc file to the Windows context menu when right clicking on the desktop or folder empty space. I've seen similar questions but nothing that talks about what to do when Word isn't installed.

As far as I know you can do it by creating a registry entry. Just follow these steps:

1. Create a new .txt file.
2. Paste the following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.doc\ShellNew]
"NullFile"=""

3. Save it, and change the extension of a .txt file to .reg
4. Double click the reg file, and click yes on every popup window.

Works just fine on my pc, hope it'll work for you.

Hello Experts,

I am cannot open my MS-word.docx document.
The error it get is White space expectedart:/word/docment, XML,Line,2 Column:642733.

I've tried everything I can think of! Including:
Saving it as a .zip file. Which it won't
Saving it as .txt: Which It will- But no help.
Looking at it in word pad: Still no help.

How can I find:,Line,2 Column:642733. and correct it? or at least save what Ive written to that point.
I have no idea what happened to cause this other than the flash drive didn't update on my last save...

Please please Help.. hours of work were invested....

I'm a big partisan of Word 2002; I find 2007 on to be hideous retrogressions. That's a discussion for another day. Right now I am trying to install it on my new Windows 7 computer, and I keep getting this:

"Error 1305. Error reading from file: E:\msworks\PFiles\WkWinUni.dll. Verify that the file exists and you can access it."

Since I see from a simple Google search that people have indeed been able to get Word 2002 to work on Windows 7, I guess I am for some reason the only one having this problem. Any idea what could be causing it? Many thanks.

My friend have a problem. When I open a new document in MS Word I have no empty sheet, but one of his old document.

He probably accidentally saved it as normal.dot, which is default Word blank template. Tell him to search for normal.dot and rename it to a more suitable title depending on the contents of the doc.

Word will recreate the normal.dot when it isn't found.

hmmm, that's a weird one.

Have you added any new macros to your normal.dot template??

Anyway, try doing a search on your system for normal.dot and when you find it, rename it to normal.old and then start Word again and see what happens.

If you did not make any changes to your normal.dot template, and the above works, then you can just delete the normal.old

I was writing in a Word file, and was saving every few minutes. After one save, my computer crashed with a blue screen... the PAGE_NON_FAULT etc. error. After re-booting my word file was nothing but squares.

Is there a way to recover my document? I have Word97.

I am using Windows Vista and I have Microsoft Office 2007. I have a HP Photosmart D110 Series scanner/printer. I have been told that I can produce *.doc documents from scanned JPG or PDF formats. I have not been able to achieve this, nor have I found anyone who can help me do it. All, however tell me that I should be able to do it.

I have tried Microsoft Document Imaging, but all Format is lost and the font is all the same font and text size, whereas the original had more than one font and varied test sizes.
