Windows 10 reports running apps on shutdown, no apps open

Question: Windows 10 reports running apps on shutdown, no apps open

When I attempt to shutdown or restart my pc I receive a message stating that there are still apps/processes still running. The number of apps running usually runs between 16-20 apps/processes. However, there are never any applications or programs running before I decide to shutdown. The names of the "apps" appear to be names of background processes. I have tried many things, but cannot seem to solve this problem.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all,

So, I am have a two different problems that could be related in some way.

First of all I am running a clean install of Windows XP SP3.
Asus M2N SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
Nvidia 7950GX2 (180.84 drivers)
150GB WD Raptor
2 GB Dual channel RAM

Here is my problem... whenever I run an application or even go to properties > settings to change monitor resolution my computer freezes then a few seconds late my mouse freezes and I get one beep.

The other problem is that when I shut down my computer the OS quits and everything seems like a normal shut down but none of the power to the system gets cut and i have to flip the switch on my power supply to cut it off... but then when i flip the switch back my computer immediately has power and i have to hit my power button a few times before the computer will boot.

Any suggestions?

A lot of detail here, hopefully everything you could possibly want to know. I hope you can help me solve this problem. I have no idea if this is a virus or malware problem.

Running Windows XP Professional SP2, using Boot Camp on a MacBook Pro with dual Intel 2.33 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM.

This problem occurred suddenly two days ago. System restore to dates last week does not resolve this.

As soon as I've booted up and started Windows, with no apps running, I had 52 services running and CPU usage 85% and above. RAM doesn't seem to be tied up. Apps are very slow or unresponsive. Trying to run more than one app. pretty much brings things to a standstill. Services with most CPU usage are System, explorer.exe and svchost. When I try to shut down, I consistently get "Ending program, please wait...explorer.exe. Once it ends that program, my desktop goes away, leaving wallpaper. system just hangs there forever. Only once have I been able to get the machine to actually shut itself down, by ending explorer.exe service and then clicking shut down in the task manager. Have not been able to repeat this success. Every other shutdown the past two days has been by brute force (holding power button down).

Uninstalled AVG antivirus thinking it was the problem. Installed Avanta. No improvement.

I followed Malware removal instructions from this forum. First changed msconfig to normal startup mode (I'd been using msconfig to eliminate some unwanted stuff from s... Read more

I saw that a member using XP-Pro resolved a "wowexec" problem and the inability to load applications.

I am using win 2000 pro. Also, my original CD is Sony provided - so its not a regular OS disk.

I'm having problems with an incredibly slow shutdown -- "The End Program - wowexec" message appears - and, it seems to not shutdown unless I pulled the plug. But, yesterday, it seems that it'll shut down if I shutdown a couple of times and then, it's a long wait.

Messages: "wfxmod32.exe - Dll - Initialization Failed" and "sspipes.scr - DLL Initialization Failed" and another message about an unstable win 16 subsystem.

Another bugaboo: I'm having problems installing applications from my CD and also I can not open some already installed applications (1) the Start or (2) the shortcut on the desktop. But, I can open them if I click on the program icon in the folder -- thus, I discovered the problem with the application loading problem from the CD, when I tried to reinstall the applications.

I've had problems with Internet Explorer for the past few weeks, but this seems unrelated. I did the virus check a few days ago -- avast discovered some trojans and I was wondering if my move of some system files to the 'chest' caused this problem but it took a few days before these 'worse' problem arose.

Would anyone know if there's a different approach for win 2000? I'd appreciate it!

Hi! Welcome to SevenForums!

Have you tried locking the taskbar? Try it.

If that doesn't work, right click the taskbar and click properties. [See Screenshot Called Properties]

Then under Notification Area click Customize. [See Screenshot called Customize]

Then tick the box at the bottom and click apply. [See Screenshot called Notification Area.]

Try that and report back!

I installed many apps locker they all work fine but I can still access apps from the all apps list.

Answer:My apps locker work fine but apps can be accessed from the all apps list, how can I prevent this?

Yes. There is no such thing as a real app locker app in Windows Phones. This is because third party apps are not allowed to interact or interfere with other third party apps due to Windows Phone Sandboxing technology.
If the developer was careful with his app, he or she would have indicated the limitations of the "app locker" he created in the app description. Otherwise, if there is no such disclaimer about the limitations of the app in the app description, the user is encouraged to report the app to Microsoft as a fraudulent or misleading app.

Last night my Lumia 925 randomly locked up (which it seems to do quite often) so I did a soft reset and then noticed a bunch of problems.
First I noticed a bunch of my app tiles were blank or only displaying the app name. That happens from time to time when apps are updated or decide to lose track of the day. So I tried to go in and refresh them. But a lot of them wouldn't open. Others will open but crash immediately, and others still will open and display their info but won't update their live tiles. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling some of them but it has had no effect.
In addition to apps not behaving, various settings windows won't open. I thought maybe my phone updated and the update was buggy, but I can't check because Extras+Info crashes before opening.
Also, in my app list the first 4 apps are things I did not install, and don't look normal. @{Miscrosoft.BingTranslate, @{Microsoft.MSBatterySaver, @{Microsoft.MSCalendar, and @{Microsoft.MSPodcast. Pretty sure none of those are supposed to be displaying that way.
I didn't attempt to install anything. I've been running 8.1. I don't know if there was an update pushed out last night that I didn't notice installing.
But my phone isn't working and I am frustrated.
Anyone know what's wrong or have suggestions?

Hi there, This problem has happened several times now, and can't find any solution so time to report it.Our Lenovo Book YB1-X90F is about 3 months old, and has been updated to Android 7.1.1 (security patch 1st August 2017), and recently we have had several instances of Apps seemingly open themselves when the Book is not in use. And by "not in use" I mean it's been closed, sitting on a chair, connected to power, not being used at all for hours. A week ago we heard strange noises in the room, and tracked them down to the Yoga Book, and when we opened the Book we found Youtube App open, playing some video of some baby crying. Closed the Youtube app and found several other apps were open, apps we rarely or never use. Chrome was also open with many, many tabs showing pages we had never accessed, and History showed they opened when we were not using it.  Today we opened the Yoga Book and some new App we had not seen before was filling the screen. We dismissed it and then found the Google Play store was open, showing the page for this new App. And after closing the Play store app, and looking at task switcher, I found that Google Maps was open showing central america (I live in UK and have never looked at this region on Google Maps), Google Sheets was open (we don't use Sheets), Note Saver was open with lots of random squiggles and lines drawn on the page. There is no-one else in the house, so something is causing these apps to load on their own. Severa... Read more

Hi -

I've been experiencing problems with my machine which first starts with issues with my browser. When I try to open a browser (chrome or IE) it never opens. I can see the process running on the task manager but the browser never displays. At this point I will notice some others applications will not open. But I'm still able to navigate the desktop. I will then try to reboot. It will close out the desktop and then hang at the shutdown screen. It will just spin there. I've let it spin for up to an hour and it will never shutdown. I will then hard boot the machine. Once it comes back up it works normally. I can open my browsers and any other applications and even shutdown normally.

When this occurs, the CPU and memory look normal. I've looked at the event logs and haven't been able to find anything that is indicator that something is wrong either. I've run malwarebytes, hijackthis and my internet suite. I haven't found any issues there either. Unfortunately, I cannot recreate the issue. Usually, I'm away from the machine for 12-24 hours and I return to it and it is hung up.

I'm stumped at this point. I would greatly appreciate any tips! I've attached the specs.

Thanks!
Shawn

'Move installed apps' and 'New apps will save to' setting is greyed out for me, after upgrading to Windows 10. Anyone else seeing the same way?
There was a way to Move Windows 10 Apps to Other Drive and Change Install Location.

Answer:Move installed apps & New apps will save to settings greyed out - Windows 10

It appears that this decision has been postponed by Microsoft:

We have actually made the decision to postpone the apps on SD functionality to a later release. While I know this feature excited many of us, we didn't feel like it was ready for prime time. Our goal is to delight users with everything that we build, and we truly feel that that is what will happen once we have fully built our vision for this feature.

if you simple check the Whatsapp it is double in size than the apps in Andriod store.
is not this a issue. it is eating too much of internal memory

Answer:Why are Windows Phone apps larger in size as compared to Andriod apps?

If true, then the app will occupy more space in storage (internal or SD card). There is however no direct relationship between file size and RAM usage. You can't tell, just by looking at file size, how much memory will be required.

Hi,

I am using the SDLC Threat Modelling tool 2016 by Microsoft on a Windows 10 virtual Box 32-bit.

When I am trying to generate a final report, it discards all the different risk ratings for each threat, and instead of having the respective high, medium, low levels next to each threat, it produces a html report putting only high next to each
one of them.

Any help?

I was given a Windows 8.1 tablet that once had a detachable keyboard which the guy lost. he reset the whole computer and after I got my information on it instead. After the reset, Windows was no longer activated and I had to reactivate it. which neither of us knows why, it was activated before we did a data factory reset. after I created my user, I installed a bunch of exes. now I go to try to see if I could test out the Windows Store to search for apps. but I search "Windows Store" or "app store" and several other things that may bring it up, but it always says, "no apps match your search" like if the Windows store is missing or somehow magically removed with the reset process. How do I get it back?

Hey everyone ?
I came with a bit of weird thought I dunno if I was right or wrong , I like the universal app thing and it is really amazing to have the very same app run on both my phone and laptop , this idea is really compelling and good for developers for easier developing and wider audience , but if you take another look , wouldn't that be bad for some certain developers or companies ?
Take WhatsApp for example , it hadn't ever made an app for PC did it ? But with windows 10 it MUST make that app bcos it will run on the PC , am I wrong ? The same story goes for other apps like snapchat , and less common apps like bitstrips (makes cartoonish comics of yourself and share on facebook and twitter) , so what do you think ??

Answer:What if universal apps on Windows 10 stopped developers from making apps?!

Hi Everyone,

I'm superlulu from France (sorry my English)
I'm installing Windows 10 on new computer for my organization . I try to configurate one with fresh install (package of apps like Libreoffice, VLC, etc. for users) and custom desktop describes in this tutorial:

Default User Profile - Customize in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

It works fine, in audit mode I install apps, drivers, custom desktop and configure default apps like google chrome for internet browser, adobe reader for pdf files etc.

then I run the command line to enter oobe mode generalize. Everything is ok, I continue my install. Then I create new user local account. And when windows starts, I have my custom desktop but default apps are removed (Microsoft Edge replace Chrome, Pdf files are read with Edge, etc.) and Apps Windows like "Weather" or "Actualities" crash . I really don't understand what happened... i try many times for same issue...

Does anyone have an idea ?

Thanks a lot

I never tried sysprepping 10 but i have faced similar issues with 8.1. Turned out that you need to save the default app associations to an XML file using DISM (before Generalizing the image ) and later import it.

Export or Import Default Application Associations

Configure, export, import App File Associations in Windows 8.1

I have used "Setupcomplete.cmd" to auto import the app associations during the last face of install.

Add a Custom Script to Windows Setup
You may also need to disable the new app notification before generalizing the image.

I have installed 32 bit Windows 7 Pro onto a notebook with an i7-6820HQ 2.7GHz CPU but it refuses to execute any of the legacy16 bit apps I have.  It just stalls (hour glass)
and the Task Manager indicates the application is running and ntvdm.exe is active.

The 16 Bit apps will run on the notebook, but with 32 bit Windows 10 installed instead.  I would rather have them work with Windows 7.

What's disconcerting is that the the same OS will run them on both my two older notebook computers with the same 32 bit Windows 7 Pro installed.  Both machines have 64 bit Duo Core Intel processors (Models T7200 and T5750 processors). And,  I can
not for the life of me figure out what the difference is or what's causing the machines not to behave in the same way...

Are there a more recent versions of ntdvm.exe and ntdvmd.dll?  The current installed version is 6.1.7600.16385.

It would be of enormous help to know why the i7-6820HQ processor won't run the 16 bit programs on 32 bit Win 7. Could the Forum tech gurus please provide an answer?  I would like to know why they won't execute.

I've tried everything including replacing the ntdvm.exe and ntdvmd.dll files with no success.  I'm at wits end...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hope this isn't an especially 'dumb' question. I just upgraded to Win7, and I installed the 64-bit version. This is my first time using a 64-bit OS. My question is this: I've installed a few programs that are made for a 64-bit OS (like Cubase, and After Effects CS4), but Windows installed them into the 'Programs Files (x86)' directory instead of the 'Program Files' directory. I had the task manager open a while ago, while I was running After Effects, and noticed that it's logged as "AfterEffects.exe*32", which seems to indicate that Windows is running it as a 32-bit app. Is that, in fact, what's happening? Do I need to uninstall and reinstall it into the 'Program Files' directory in order to get Windows to run it as a 64-bit app?
I apologize if this is a really obvious thing- like I said, I'm new. Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:Running 64-bit apps in Windows 7

MadSammyboy welcome to the forums.

Not a dumb question, and no it doesn't matter which of those folder a program is installed to. They are just folders and named as such to make it easier to know which are 32 bit and 64 bit programs. They have no affect on how the program runs.

From the sounds of the one program, it sounds like you installed the 32 bit version instead of the 64 bit one. Either that or it isn't a true 64 bit program.

As for where they install, that depends entirely on the installer. If it is a 32 bit installer or it wasn't coded to put it in the Program Files folder on 64 bit Windows it will default to the Program Files (x86) folder, which again will have no affect on whether the program runs 32 bit or 64 bit.

Modern App Stores have been around for many years and are present on macOS, iOS and Android. Now let's add Windows Store to the mix, since Microsoft have struggled with gaining anything to add to their Store, and would like to hear your opinion.

External sites:

What is it? What's a Universal Windows Platform (UWP) app?
How it works? Intro to the Universal Windows Platform
Background: Difference between Windows UWP (Universal Windows Platform) and Win32 apps, as explains below:

"Another big reason why UWP apps are desirable over Win32 programs is that they are much more restricted in terms of what they can do after they are installed on the operating system. This makes UWP apps more secure than most Win32 programs. For instance, UWP apps can usually only read the file system in the installed location of the app, as well as an application data folder and a temporary file folder. This is unlike Win32 apps, which usually have access to the whole file system." | Link
In my opinion, UWP apps will shapes Windows 10 future for the Windows 10 Family (Desktop, IoT, Mobile and Xbox), but I do doubt that many members here will not want UWP apps to become the norm, and would prefer Win32 apps. Comment below.

Due to the limitations of the Poll, please vote 1 option under Stage A and 1 option under Stage B - that is most fitting to your personal views.

As the Windows 10 Final release date nears, Microsoft is fine tuning its builds and providing it for Windows Insiders for feedback. Many of the Insiders had complained that those having many apps find it tedious to scroll through to their wanted app in the All Apps list in Windows 10.
Microsoft has done lots of UX improvements in the recent Windows 10 Preview builds and one of them is addressing this issue.
Now if you want to go to a particular app quickly, say Weather app, you don’t have to scroll down all the way to W. Now to access it quickly, just click on All Apps and click on any of the Letter in all Apps -
It’ll provide the Alphabets list and click on W, say for Weather app and it’ll take you directly to all apps under that letter.
Hope this small tip helps you. (Source:meraTechPort)

Does anyone know how to actually use these apps?
I use the Skype desktop app from my tablet and (beside the fact it is near useless on a tablet) I can at least use it to dial a phone number or (if Outlook is running) select someone and phone them.
Am I completely misunderstanding this app or is there no way to (a) text message any phone, (b) dialog any phone number, (c) contact any person in your People, Outlook, or any list... unless they have a Skype account?
In other words... three silly apps can't do even the most basic thing the desktop app can do?

Answer:Windows 10 Messaging and Phone Apps, how can I use the apps?

You are right that these new messaging and phone apps are (for now) just simple Skype apps. This means that the messaging happens via Skype's network (not real texting) and that you can call any number (except emergency numbers) using your Skype credit.
However, a new feature in the November update also allows you to write texts with Cortana on your PC and who then sends them from your (Windows) phone. Also call notifications will show up on your PC.

will window 10 support android apps and ios apps? please tell me, thanx

Answer:Will Windows 10 support Android apps and iOS apps?

No.
Same situations: iOS does not support Android & Windows Store apps, Android does not support iOS and Windows Store apps.
Microsoft has made developer tools to make it easier to port iOS/Android apps to Universal Apps for Windows 10. Let's wait and see how many cool iOS/Android apps will be ported.

I noticed that and that could be interesting and more easy to port iOS apps to Windows 10.

Hello,

In general Unity 3D and Chrome started acting weird. In Unity 3D after selecting a project in the welcome screen it keeps running in the background but nothing shows up. After removing the user files or fresh uninstall/install online license manager doesn't work and require manual licensing. Chrome also started reporting some unresponsive pages. I also start seeing increasing CPU and disk usage from System and Windwos Defender in Task Manager. Then I suspected of a virus and run Rkill which reported a ZEROACCESS. Then I run FRST.

** Rkill log is so long that it gives server time out so I'm cropping the file list in the pasted log and attaching all logs to the post.

Hey anyone who can help...my computer has been a bit slower lately (a bit), and I noticed this issue just now. Applications seem to be running automatically in 32-bit mode on my computer, and I'm really not sure why.

Task Manager shows these programs

chrome.exe *32
Dropbox.exe *32
googletalkplugin.exe *32
jusched.exe *32
mcagent.exe *32
(etc.)

Except some do not have *32 there. I think it's probably important to note that these are from microsoft/drivers.
explorer.exe
dwm.exe
sttray64.exe
taskmgr.exe
taskhost.exe
ApntEx.exe (Alps pointing device driver for windows)
rundll.exe
(etc.)

I don't believe that I've had this problem before now. The only strange things I've done with my computer lately include
-Trying to run backup about 9 times kinda unsuccessfully just because the storage device runs out of space
-Installing "SpeedFan" which at one point gave me a message something like "Don't try to do so-and-so because it may cause system issues"...so I didn't do it.

I also note that at one point, my computer tried to get me to install a 32-bit driver for my graphics card, saying I don't have the most updated version..

Thanks to anyone who can help me out! I really appreciate it...

-Adam

Answer:Apps running in 32-bit mode on 64-bit Windows 7

That looks normal, some software only has a 32bit version so 7 runs it that way.

Speedfan puts a warning window up each time it starts so that's normal too.

The driver thing I'm not sure about, maybe windows updates did it or it could be part of the driver/control Graphics software you have already or a 3rd party driver updater you installed.

If the Graphics are working ok now I wouldn't bother with an update.

I just got this new ASUS UX303LA 2 days ago and everything has been working perfectly on it except for that whenever I try to download an application (whether it be utorrent, VLC, AVG, Evernote, etc.) it always downloads the 32 bit version. For no reason. Also, on almost every application I open up, the text or buttons are TINY. I don't know whether or not this has to do with them being 32 bit applications but I don't know how to change it.
If anyone knows how to fix this, or how lock my computer into only being able to download 64 bit apps that would be very helpful.
Thanks in advance

Answer:Running 64 bit windows but only downloading 32 bit apps? Help

The majority of applications will be 32 bit apps, the main reason you have a 64 bit OS is because of the RAM installed, A 32 bit OS will only see 4 GB of RAM, you need a 64 bit OS to see more RAM
There are 64 bit apps out there like Photoshop and other Graphics design software that required a lot of RAM to function correctly. There is no issue installing 32 bit apps on a 64 bit OS
Text and buttons been tiny are most likely due to the screen resolution!

Hello,

First of all, I appreciate there are many threads about this around the internet but I've tried all the solutions mentioned and none of them seem to work.

This morning I was reading that the issue of metro apps not opening could be caused by using the inbuilt administrator account and as I upgraded from Windows 7 I assumed that I could be using that. I created a new admin account, made my main account into a local account and moved my email address over to the new account. When I opened up the new account I clicked immediately onto the messenger and mail apps and both of these worked perfectly, I thought the problem was solved. After this, I tried connecting my phone using the Windows Phone app, (it's a HTC Windows 8X) and the problem occurred again and following this I decided to try the mail app again and the problem occurred there too.

Previously I've tried:

- System Refresh.
- App Troubleshooter.
- Updating Drivers.
- Running the 1024 x w.hatever resolution.
- Uninstalling and reinstalling the apps.
- Uninstalling third party anti-virus (AVG Free).

I'm all out of ideas and I'm getting increasingly frustrated at this. I just want to use Windows 8 as intended without this recurring problem. I don't want to reinstall Windows 8 because I have a lot of files and I don't like the idea of potentially loosing them.

Like I said, I understand that there are many threads with this but I can't find a solution and any help would be gratefully received.

Much appreciate... Read more

Answer:Windows 8 Apps Won't Open

I pulled my hair out on more than one occasion with the apps opening and closing immediately.. or not even opening at all.

The latest culprit was the windows IE temp folders I had moved off my main OS solid state drive onto another drive, disappeared due to a sata cable coming unplugged. Most of the W8 apps would not open. Once I plugged the drive back in, all worked fine. So make sure your IE temp folders are still there. And if you have moved them to another drive other than the main OS drive, you may wanna move them back as I've read on occasion there are issues with the move.

Also... I found this little tidbit of information that seemed to have helped alot of people out with this issue. I didn't have to try it.. but you may give it a go.

"Go to troubleshooting (press win+w >then type troubleshooting). now a window opens in desktop. click "fix problems with windows updates". now click next. windows will search for solutions, but it wont find anything. then windows will ask if u want to try in administrator mode. click yes. windows will find and solve the problem. that's it."

Everything is working fine except for when he goes to run some of the network monitoring software we have, omnivista in particular. He has the same setup at his home and everything works fine. I'm running Guitar Rig (amp simulation software) on Windows 7, but whenever the application is open it prevents other Windows applications from accessing the audio output. For example, if I have Guitar Rig open I can't play back an MP3 track. As soon as I close Guitar Rig other applications recover their audio capability.

I have tried disabling the "exclusive control" option for all of my Playback Devices in Windows (then rebooting) but it didn't help.

I have Realtek HD audio, and my Playback Devices are listed as:
Speakers - Behringer USB WDM Audio 2.8.40 (this is the guitar USGB interface)
Speakers (Default Device) - Realtek High Definition Audio
Realtek Digital Output
Realtek Digital Output (Optical)

I'm using the ASIO4ALL driver for the USB guitar interface.

Can anyone tell me how/if I can share audio between Guitar Rig/ASIO4ALL and other Windows applications?

Answer:Windows audio not available to other apps when running Guitar Rig

Your also cross posting here Windows audio not available to other apps when running Guitar Rig
since it is a native instrument program you may be better sticking with that thread.

No, it is not running, because I have Kaspersky Internet Security installed.

What do I then do when Windows 8.1 becomes available in Windows Store in a few days?

neither did "sfc /scannow" and other stuff I found on the internet work.

Hi, when I have around 25 or so windows open, things stop working--old windows won't un-shrink, new windows won't open, applications won't start up (they'll start up, and then quit right away or lock up), making me think that Windows is out of memory. But I have 4 GBs of RAM on this machine, and Task-Manager says that my physical-memory use is only at 60%, and that my CPU use is only at 50% (or less). So what's wrong, and how can I get rid of this problem?

I used to have this problem all the time with Windows XP on my old machine, but that machine only had 1 GB of RAM, so I could understand why then.

Thanks for your time guys, this is really puzzling and annoying.

Answer:Out of memory? Windows and Apps Won't open?

I've just assumed it's a Vista or maybe even IE7/Explorer issue that hopefully eventually gets fixed.
I also have 4gb...& multitask a lot-- and I'm resigned to a daily reboot to free up resources. And yes, like yourself, those problems surface while w/ not so high reported resource usage.

It's one of the reasons why i keep harping that Vista isn't ready for prime time.

I've never had any such problems on XP post SP2.... even with ram as low as 512mb. Yes, that OS will slow down a lot when heavily tasked, but not freeze / seize up.

I have been meaning to test a couple of things:

1. removing a ram stick or two... to eliminate as the cause the 4gb ram addressing limit(OS does not see / use all that ram: subtract from that figure memory addressing for all hardware).
2. 64 bit-- do the problems persist with all that ram still in; that would kind of prove it's an OS / Explorer issue.

Good luck, wish i could be of more help....

Try creating another account and see if the problem persists. Else try restoring to an earlier time when the PC was working, recover from a backup or do an in place repair install.

Hey anyone who can help feel free to do so:

This is my first post on the windows 8 forums, and I was looking for help with this issue. I downloaded the Microsoft solitaire collection from the windows store, and it will not open. I click on the icon on the start menu, it pops up, and then it just takes me back to the home screen. It happens every time, and so I leave it open in the background hoping that it will eventually get past the start screen, but it never does. I quickly realized that no other apps from the store will open either... They all open for a brief moment and then return me to the start screen.

-I already updated all my drivers, and everything else seems to be running fine once I did that (Other problems disappeared once I updated)

-I already updated all my apps in the Windows Store, and the windows store itself updated when I first started my PC. All of my apps already pre-installed open and work flawlessly.

-I downloaded the Skype App, and it too would not open, so I downloaded the desktop version, but when I opened it, and logged in, the whole system would shut down! Windows said it was a driver error with my network Card driver, however I already have the most up to date driver, and apparently there is not a fix out for this yet, so I don't know if that could also be the problem. Some people say to uninstall and re-install the driver, however it is a lengthy process for that one particular driver, and according to any info I can find it hasn't fixed th... Read more

As soon as I open an app such as Skype or my camera It immediately closes and sends me to my start menu. My Google chrome also closes and says it has stopped working. Can anyone help? I have rebooted, refreshed, and still no luck.

Answer:why do apps close as soon as i open them in Windows 8

Perform a System Restore to a date before the issue started. Then install, update, and run Malwarebytes free version (remember to uncheck the 'free trial' during the install or you will not get the free version). Remove anything it finds and post back the log for review. What you appear to have is some type of corruption to the system which the restore should help but if it was caused by malware, it is best to clean it out now. Posting the log will allow some to review it and see if there is anything further needed to be sure you are clean. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I plan to buy a Lenovo G500, which features a function on the F8 key ''show all open apps''. As I understand that the term ''apps'' is commonly associated with Windows 8, so what will happen if you press it in Windows 7? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Fn+F8 (''show currently open apps'') in Windows 7?

Hi TMHKR,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

I?m glad to hear that you are planning to buy G500 Laptop; the Fn+F8 feature is same in Windows 7 as well as Windows 8. It performs the similar action like Winkey+TAB does displaying all the running applications and Windows opened in the computer.

Do post us back for further queries.

Hello. So I'll just get to the point. I can't seem to open any off my apps from the start menu. When I open an app, the app closes back but is available at the sidewindow(?). It doesn't load or anything. When I click it, the app sort of minimizes to the sidewindow(?).

So I've been lurking around and one of the problems that I thought was happening to me is that I do not have the temporary internet files. C -> Users -> My Name -> AppData -> Local. I read that it should have a windows folder in the local folder and a temporary internet files in the windows folder. So can anyone solve this problem?

I changed my local user to the microsoft account and then changed back to the local user using another username so that might affect these change in my pc. If it is not the problems, could someone help me solve this?

Thanks,
namupa

Answer:Windows 8 apps wont open

Hello Namupa, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Any Store app that uses a service will most likely need you to be signed in to a Microsoft account to be able to open it. As a test, switch your local account back to a Microsoft account to see if you are able to open them afterwards.

If not, then go through the app troubleshooting steps in the tutorial below to see if they may be able to help.

I have a Lenova Yoga 2 11. I have several apps that won't open, some are windows apps, and others are 3rd party.  I have done some research and followed several troubleshooting suggestions, beginning with a sfc scan, which resulted in corrupt files that could not be repaired.   I recently loaded a different virus protection program than was originally on my computer, and from some of my research, it looks like maybe the registry fix part of the program may have removed some files that I need?  Whatever it is, I can't get into the advanced startup, no matter how fast I hit the buttons after starting.  I would like to reload windows, but my laptop didn't come with a disk.  It's supposed to have a back-up installation on my backup drive, or be available from the support website, but I can't find it at either place.  I just want my computer to work again   I am attaching a screen shot of what happens when I try to open one of my programs...

I have a client running windows 8.1 on a dell laptop, with touch. This started about 2 weeks ago. When she tries to open any of the apps you see a flash and nothing opens. This is for all apps including the store.
When she reboots the machine, the apps open. This is a random thing and sometimes this works and sometimes she has to shut down the laptop to get it to work. I did a sfc/scannow- showed noting, and did the microsoft refresh apps fixit and it worked for a while then started happening again. Other than trying to make a new account which is a royal pain in the butt because her only email address is her live account (this would mean i would need to set up another live account) I do not know if this would even fix it. and i do not want to reinstall windows, it did not come with a windows disk.
Any suggestions to try?

I upgraded to Fall Creators Update last week along with the cumulative update (16299.19). All has gone well until last night. When I turned on the computer my start button as well as windows key is unresponsive as is Microsoft Edge from the task bar. Right click the start button does work however. sfc /scannow indicates no problems. non store apps work eg Google Chrome. Suggestions welcome on how to fix this preferably without a re-install. Thanks

Hi
This is not really a new thing, but I still have the same problem. I have tried to refresh windows and it gets nearly to the end and message is that it can not refresh. So I tried to re-install and the same thing happens. It gets to 98 percent and cannot finish installing. Is there any other thing I can do or just resign myself to the fact that the app feature on 8.1 is not going to work on my system.
When trying to download a new app from the app store, the message is error 0x80070002
maybe I have to wait for Windows 10????

I don't know if its my hard drive or what, but most if not all of my Windows Apps take nearly 10 seconds to load. This is very weird, because at least 2 and a half weeks ago, this wasn't occuring. What could be the problem?

I've scanned for viruses, spyware and the like, defragged, cleaned up the registry, ran the scandisk and use ccleaner everday. And I don't have a lot of background apps running, so I don't think thats it either. Problem still arises and I'm baffled. So far no one has been able to help me with this, so thats why I came to this forum. Any help would be great.

Thanks much and God bless

The computer is working great except that when I open games or music or camera they open then close and put an icon at the bottom of the screen. I use desk top view. The only game loaded is Microsoft solitare I have never used music or camera.

Please help....all programs on my Windows 2000 are running so slow that they will hardly open at all. The most recent changes I have made are installing a new printer (HP Officejet J4550 All-in-One) and a wireless network router. I didn't actually set the network and router up as a "friend" came in and said "I know all about this and will set this up for you" The slowness didn't seem to happen immediately and was 3-4 weeks later so not sure that it was a factor.

Not sure what started this.
Customer is getting a message when he tries to open MYOB

"C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt"
The system file is not suitable for running MSDos and Microsoft Windows appliacations. Choose close to exit.

Tried this:
Copied C:\windows\repair\autoexec.nt to C:\windows\system32
Re-ran Application and was able to get in and everything looked ok.

Customer just called to say they are getting the same message.

FYI: WinXP Home.
Just ran latest spybot and adaware.
I'm going back and will get a HiJackThis log.

Any ideas.

Added: Found this in mskb http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305521
Added: Did a search of this forum and found "Rollin Rog" already posted this KB Article in another thread (He's so good at finding these).

My issue is that I did replace the autoexec.nt file from the windows repair directory and it now has disappeared again.
Trying to determine what's happeneing here. As indicated above, I need to check out (hiJackThis) if something else running causing this.

FYI: Spybot did report a file conscorr.exe, which I didn't delete.

I've been experiencing major slow down of my system and can't figure out why. Here are some details:
Computer is a HP Pavilion Core i7 Q 720 @ 1.6 ghz with 8gb ram
I'm using Performance Test to benchmark the system in different states
My baseline is Win7 Diagnostic mode (no services, no startups) - let's say that is 100% (quite fast)
Running only windows services and Eset - it drops to about 60%
But then when I'm working running several MS Office apps, Firefox, Skype and a few smaller programs, it drops to 5%!! Quite noticeably and frustratingly slow for what is supposed to be a very speedy computer.
The CPU usage is not high, memory is fine. But it is just SLOW.
Any suggestions how I can diagnose this further?

Answer:Windows 7 pro 64 slow down running moderate number of apps

I would start with a complete and upadated anti virus and malwarebytes scan
Then , I would try the clean boot procedure to help diagnose
How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

I would then read this fine tutorial to see if any changes are applicable.

Running a C2D E7300 on a Gigabyte EP43-DS3L board. Vista runs fine (had some BSOD issues earlier which were solved by clocking back RAM from 1066 to 800mhz) but now whenever I try to install a 64 bit app it tells me my processor is incompatible.

I've tried Ventrilo 64 bit edition, IE7 64 bit and MS Intellimouse 64 bit drivers. Any ideas whats up? I ran an intel Processor utility to make sure my computer is identifying the processor correctly -- which it was, but when I checked in my BIOS it was showing my processor @ 2.26 mhz and not 2.66. I did a "restore to optimized defaults" and that corrected it.

Are there some drivers I must install?

Answer:Running 64 bit Windows Vista ultimate but cant install 64 bit Apps

So reinstall Vista x64 and start again. I say this with all seriousness, and there are people around here that know it from first-hand experience themselves (as I learned decades ago):

Sometimes you just have to start over, and remarkably, the second time around everything just works, like magic.

No kidding. While you may be sitting there spending time posting about this, spending time wondering about this, spending time trying to troubleshoot this, in the long run I promise that you'll waste all of it and eventually you'll reinstall the OS and suddenly discover, "Wow, that guy was right... weird..."

I know people think they're not learning anything with such methodology, and I disagree: you'd be learning that sometimes you have to pack it in and start clean. This is almost guaranteed one of those times.

And I won't even get to hassling you about the overclocking...
