Keep getting message "Updates Installed"

Question: Keep getting message "Updates Installed"

I got a crazy alert! virus! blah blah and the damned computer was screaming at me. I tried to close it down, but I was on the phone and didn't have time to fool with it so I hit the power button. When rebooting I hit f6 to boot to safe mode. Interestingly it stated, "installing updates." After a while it rebooted itself. I then get the little message box "updates installed successfully" or some such. So I go to View the update history and the last update it shows occurred on 8/10. Today is 8/12. I then got a couple of additional pop up messages stating "Updates installed" yet there is no new entry for update history.

Is it possible that some malware was loaded? I'm running Panda Free antivirus scan as I write. Just curious if anyone has any ideas on this. Kind of scary that there is some junk on my pc watching me now...

Preferred Solution: Keep getting message "Updates Installed"

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Keep getting message "Updates Installed"

Additional note: I went to control panel/programs/programs and features/installed updates. IT shows that Security update for MS Windows KB3176493 was installed on 8/12/2016. When I look at View Update History, it shows that patch was installed on 8/10/2016. Is it possible that all of this is because the patch was downloaded on 8/10 but since I hadn't rebooted until today, it wasn't actually installed until 8/12? Then the two different places "Update History" and "Installed Updates" just happen to show the same thing with 2 different dates? -thx

Hello All,

I was referred here by NeonFx from the TechGuy Security forum. He had me run a slew of anti-virus/anti-spyware diagnostics. According to NeonFx my system is currently infection free and he states the problem lies elsewhere.

He also had me run the Windows Update FixIt tool in both Default and Aggressive mode - both of which did not fix the problem. So what is the problem??

PROBLEM:

When I run the install Windows updates, the updates do not install, and I receive the following message (not verbatim, but close):

"Some updates were unable to be installed..."

This problem "came out of no where" and there has been no suspicious activity prior to it starting other than an IE7 redirect rootkit that NeonFx helped me remove (if I recall correctly an infection of agp440)...

Stumped, stumped and stumped...

Okay, here goes.

I'm working on a laptop (XPpro) that won't install the available windows updates. It downloads them and then tries to install each one and fails. I then get a list of the updates that were not installed with the ever helpful message "updates were unable to be successfully installed". I pulled the error 0x8024200e out of the windowsupdate.log file.

I have

1) tried tgal's advice in post #10 from http://forums.techguy.org/t351188&highlight=updates+unable+successfully+installed.html

2) tried justfoo's advice in post #13 from http://forums.techguy.org/t328556&highlight=updates+unable+successfully+installed.html

3) tried renaming the "Software Distribution" folder in the WINNT directory to "Software Distribution Old" and attempting update again.

None of these have solved the issue.

Any help would be welcome.

Thanks,

Raeli

Have you tried the system file check:
Click Start > Run > Type in "sfc /scannow" without quotes and click ok (you need to have the Win XP CD in the CD-Rom).

The other thing to try is the Beta Update Page: http://update.microsoft.com/

Hello. I was wondering how I would go about clearing the auto complete field in the windows update "Installed Updates" window. It seems completely independent from the windows explorer search field.

I was checking to make sure no windows 10 or telemetry updates accidentally got installed and now it's FULL of different KBnumbers.

I tried using the "find" option in the registry, but got freaked out when it brought up a bunch of stuff i didn't recognize and i didnt wanna mess anything up.

Thanks in advance,

When I launch WU form the std start menu shortcut, it launches wuapp.exe and just hangs. I have to terminate the process in task manager. Additional launches = additional hung processes.

Shortcut target: %windir%\system32\wuapp.exe startmenu
Starts in: %windir%\system32\

The same condition occurs if I try to launch wuapp.exe directly from %windir%\system32\
Yesterday, I checked the Effective permissions for my user on wuapp.exe = full control
Today, after running the Windows WU Troubleshooter and WU MS Fixit, the permissions = read, read & execute.

The issue is twofold. The standard WU shortcut "hangs" but Control Panel WU does not hang, until I try to view installed updates (viewing history seems to be ok). I have to terminate the process in Task Manager once I try to view installed updates.

As a workaround, I created a shortcut to Control Panel WU - this allows me to check for and apply updates.

Shortcut target: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Update

A few things that might have caused this - recent activity, but just guessing I installed Advanced Uninstaller Pro and played with it, but did not apply anything it suggested. One thing I tried was duplicate files - eventually killing it due to time (lots of dups, lots of files).

Answer:Windows update "hang" - menu shortcut & installed updates

I'm not sure that resetting WU would actually cure your problem - it sounds to me more of a systemic problem, possibly to do with one of the involved technologies (scripting, NET, etc.).

My wuapp.exe has TrustedInstaller as owner, with only Read and Execute permissions for users and Admins.

When trying to use Windows Update, the updates download successfully but fail to install. The following message appears: "Problem: A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed." I have turned my antivirus software off, I have tried updating manually, I have tried updating one at a time. Nothing seems to work. I now have a backlog of 13 updates that I'm supposed to install. Can anyone please help? THANKS!

Answer:Windows Update: "problem on your computer is preventing updates from being installed"

Boot into "Safe Mode with Networking" (restart while tapping F8 repeatedly) and see if you can install the updates. This should work.

Ok heres the deal.
I crashed my system and have done a clean install. I couldn't find my winxp pro disk so I barrowed my friends. His has SP2 on it. I then found out after installing it, that it wouldn't work with my product key. So i had to go searching for my disk. Thankfully I found it, and did a windows repair to reinstall the system with the new disk.
My disk didn't have SP2 on it.

So I go to windows update to do updates and it trys to install like 80 something updates and everytime it comes back with ": A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed "

I have a feeling that it thinks SP2 is on my system. is there a way to resolve this without having to do another clean install?

John

Answer:"A problem on your computer is preventing updates from being downloaded or installed"

Hello and Welcome to TSF

Why wouldn't it work with your product key?
It is better to install with SP2 incorporated onto the cd, saves a lot of time. SP2 should have been eliminated while performing the repair install.

You could try the following but you need SP2 installed before installing the updates, the site should have recognized it was not installed. If the following does not help then I suggest you Slipstream Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD and do a clean install using the proper software

Try re-registering the windows update components. This may help fix a corrupt installer

1. Click on Start and Run,
2. Type "REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL" (without quotation marks) and press Enter.
3. Should get the message "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" Click OK.
4. Repeat above for each of the following:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL

5. Reboot

Hi everyone. I'd like to know what you think about this.

I just noticed this today. I have something called "Program Updates" on my Programs menu and in my Control Panel. Running Win XP SP2. Here are two screen prints:
and, from Control Panel:

I don't know for sure how it got installed on my system. On 9/23/07, I installed software from Walmart for downloading music; it's called Wal-Mart Music Downloads Store. As I said, I did not notice the Programs Updates item at that time.

It, i.e. Programs Updates, does not work, either. If I open it from either the Programs menu or Control Panel, makes no difference. Here's what it looks like:
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y256/farmpond/forums/ProgramUpdates3.jpg As you can see, it appears to be an incomplete user interface.

I'm thinking of this strategy of attack. Uninstall Wal-Mart Music Downloads Store, in case Programs Updates did get installed with it [I doubt it did, but I can re-install Wal-Mart Music Downloads Store later]. Restore to a Restore Point prior to installing Wal-Mart Music Downloads Store. Take a look and see whether Programs Updates is gone. If not, try CCleaner. If gone, run CCleaner anyway. And, if I reinstall Wal-Mart Music Downloads Store, look closely at my Programs menu and Control Panel to verify this thing has not reappeared.

Edit: fyi, I'm behind a router, I'm using an older version of Norton Personal Fireware; I use AVG Free anti... Read more

Hello,

Recently I've been troubleshooting random hangs which one of the solution was to uninstall the following updates if I had any of them installed:
- KB2952664
- KB2990214
- KB3035583
I had KB2952664 and KB2990214 installed on 6th of April 2015 which after creating an restore point I successfully uninstalled them via control panel.

When I checked the installed update, those updates were gone for good. However I've noticed two significant changes after uninstalling:
- KB2952664 has been installed right after the uninstalling process. I'm not sure when it was exactly installed (before or after restart). It's been dated as today (23rd of June 2015) which it shows up on the installed updates
- When I checked the "Windows update" tab it says I've never checked for any updates nor installed one. The update history and hidden updates has been wiped out as well.

For the second point, I was able to check for updates which brought back all the hidden updates (I kept running the scans until there were no updates found).

As for the first point I don't know what caused to install KB2952664 again automatically. I've tried uninstalling this freshly installed update however it's still there listed on the installed updates. I'm not sure how to check if the uninstalling has been successful or not but the process was smooth (no endless waits or errors popped during the process) as well as two restore point has been created: one for the initial removal (dated 6th of April... Answer:KB2952664 installed "automatically" after uninstalling certain updates

How did you actually do the uninstall of KB2952664? using Control Panel>Installed Updates, or the WUSA command?
Try using the following command in an Elevated Command Prompt:

wusa /uninstall /kb:2952664

reboot once it's finished, then do a Check for Updates, and hide the KB when it's found again.

I am using Windows 7 Pro SP1 64-bit. I want to remove IE 11 but when I go to look at Installed updates, only 47 items show. There are updates for MS Office, Adobe, etc., but no Windows updates. I have another laptop with the same OS and I can see the updates on it. Is there some option in Windows update I need to set?

Removal of IE11 is not the real problem here, it's the absence of the windows components. This is a new laptop.

Answer:Windows components do not appear in "view installed updates"

If the machine came with IE11 pre-installed, then it almost certainly cannot be removed.
You'd have to reformat and reinstall using retail media - assuming that your machine actually has a proper Windows 7 COA sticker, and isn't simply a downgrade from Windows 8 Pro.

I have been trying for 2 weeks to install a Canon Pixma MX87) on my desktop under Windows XP Home Edition. Despite various forum postings and advice, I have been unable to do anything without getting the above error message. Assuming I have corrupted the Registry, I have restored all changes made by my Registry Editor, and (via Safe Mode) restored the system to a date in September, long before I had tried to install the printer or delete any older Canon programs. All these Canon programs and other entries in Canon Folders (e.g. in Downloads) have all been uninstalled using Revo, with traces also being removed by Revo at the Advanced level. But I still get the message "A newer version of MP Drivers is already installed"!
Is there any last chance of sorting this, or will I have to erase the hard drive and do a complete clean re-installation? I've spent DAYS on this and am getting really frustrated with it!

Answer:Error message "a newer version of MP Drivers is already installed". RUBBISH!

XP may be installing a default driver that is newer
than the one on the CD.
Plug in the camera.
Look in "my computer" to see if the camera shows up as a drive.
Check the canon website for software updates,if you need the software.
You may be able to browse the folders on the CD and run the
different setup programs for the software individually.

ever since i (partially) installed an Audigy sound card, i get a message that reads "No drive attached to FasTrak controller, the BIOS is not installed" every time i boot up. this is annoying, but not too annoying, because it is only ther for about 2 seconds.

far more annoying is that ever since i upgraded Netscape 7.0 to 7.1, the Program Files folder opens up at startup. what makes it annoying is that i have to close it each and every time i boot up.

any help with stopping either of these unwanted occurrences would be much appreciated.

My computer, based on an ASUS P4T533-C mobo that never gave me any problems, has suddenly and spontanously begun complaining with a "No CPU installed, no CPU installed" error message (verbal spoken message) when I power it up. Then the system proceeds to boot normally. However if I reset it before the POST has completed, I end up in the CMOS setup screen with messages about how the mobo now runs in safe mode after having hung on a previous boot attempt due to an incorrect CPU speed setting. Which is not the case because the CPU setting _is_ correct. When I reset it after POST has completed, no error messages occur.

ASUS support sent a BIOS update, which I have installed as per their instructions including reloading the factory default settings, but to no avail.
I have made no hardware changes prior to the first occurrence of the problem.

What could cause this? What could I do to trace or fix the problem? Is my mobo about to fail? All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

// Frank

I'm deploying our Windows 10 company image through MDT. One of the steps i do is enter the windows key through a command line custom task. The problem I run into is that I keep getting the "Installed product key successfully message" dialog box to come up which stalls the rest of my task sequence and forces user intervention.
The command line I'm using - which I thought would prevent any confirmation boxes - is:

slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /VERYSILENT /SUPPRESSMSGBOXES

Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can clear this message automatically, suppress it from even popping up or if I'm doing something wrong, what the correct command is?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Answer:Clearing "Installed product key successfully message" through cmd line

I'm not seing the /verysilent /suppressmsgboxes in the slmgr /? help window.

What about adding '>C:\temp.txt' without the quotes to the end to dump the message to a text file then delete the text file?

Hello all,

I am having this little problem where I install updates via Windows Update and all the downloads are downloaded and installed fine, but when I go to Add/Remove programs and go to the "View Installed Updates" section to uninstall an update, it's all blank.

Answer:Windows 7 Pro "installed updates" blank

I have downloaded probably 4 or 5 different updates since I finished installing the Win 7 Pro x64 pack from MSNDAA and when I go to the Add/Remove Programs -> View Installed Updates I only have one present. Might be only showing significant updates and not small patches.

I'm a n00b hoping for some help...

I keep getting the system message that says "Your computer has not been restarted since you last installed updates. Click here to complete installation."

So I click restart and, when my PC reboots, the same message is there. What's annoying is that the message pops up every 5 minutes. Plus, I can no longer install any updates from the Microsoft website.

Anyone know what to do?

Thanks!

Windows 7 Ultimate/32bit. iTunes 9.0
Each time I dock my iPhone, I get a pop-up message "device driver software was not installed successfully". I want to stop this message appearing.
In fact, Windows 7 *is* locating the correct USBAAPL driver (which is seen to load in Device Manager) and iTunes works fine.
However, since the detail on the error message relates to "MTP USB device" it seems that Windows is triggering the error too soon.
I recently reinstalled Windows 7 from scratch and latest iTunes etc (for other reasons) but this problem remains.
If I delete the driver then the default that Windows looks for is the MTP driver (which fails) and then I manually point it to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers and it reinstalls the USBAAPL driver it had before.

Answer:Plugging in iPhone generates "device driver software was not installed successfully" message

Try go to Device Manager, if there is any “Unknown MTP device”, uninstall it,  then plug in your iPhone and scan for hardware changes to let Windows Update automatically find and install the correct driver.

can anyone help with this as I can't find a solution anywhere every time I boot my pc up I get a "new CPU installed" message appear in bios asking me to enter setup or load default values i have done this several times entering different values into the bios and starting it on default values even thou I have been running the pc for a year I tried resetting the car CMOS switch removed and replaced the battery changed the ram sticks around, I've removed the CPU and found one of the pins was bent and straighten it
can't think what it might be

Answer:"new CPU installed" message keeps appearing bios start up

That is typical when you change a CPU. Have you gone to bios and loaded optimized defaults, save and exit? And in bios does it recognize the correct CPU you have now? are you sure the CPU is properly seated? Other than those things, all I can think of is reflash bios or call technical support who are going to probably tell you to flash bios.

I get The "New CPU Installed! Please enter SETUP to configure your system." Message.

Hey Guys, haven't posted here in a while. Basically I have had this problem for a very long time now, every time I turn the computer On I get the message

> Press F1 to Run Setup
> Press F2 to load default values and continue

My computer works fine, its just annoying to have to press F2 all the time.
This started happening when I re-attached my whole motherboard onto a new case about a month ago. Everything works fine, but I get that message every time I boot up the computer, and have to press F2 all the time.
I googled this matter, but there wasn't really anyone who had had the same problem as me. What do you guys think? My motherboard is a P4P800.

OK, so here is my problem - I got a new ipod shuffle, and have had it hooked up with Itunes with no problems. Then last night I plugged it in again to make some changes, and it said that the files were corrupt, and now my ipod blinks green and red and does not work.

So, to try to figure out how to fix that, one of my options is to download the new version of Itunes, I think it is 7.6. (I also called apples support line, and they suggested this too). So in doing that I received an error when it was just finishing the download - stating that Itunes could not be installed b/c visual basic script is not installed or has been disabled. Make sure VBScript is installed, turn off script blocking in anitvirus and personal firewall softward, re-register VBScript and reinstall Itunes.

So, I did all those things it said to do, I also uninstalled Itunes, and tried to reinstall and I got the same error. I then called HP support, b/c apple said it might have to do with my computer. They were really not able to help me, and suggested contacting Microsoft b/c VBScript is a windows program, ect, ect, so called them, and they suggested I contact apple. So here I am, not sure what to do, and would really appreciate any help I can get. Thanks!

Hi,

On Windows 10 lately I've gotten this message(or something close to verbatim) with the pink screen every time I boot after waiting a few minutes while it claims to be updating. Not only this, but it has to reboot to boot up WITHOUT the updates that for no apparent reason it can't complete. Please let me know what I can do about this. Windows takes 3+ minutes to really complete the booting process, and this makes it take more like ten. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

When I click on the icon for updates it has prompted me to turn the pc off and back on again which I have done but still not been able to download any new updates.
One of the things I was advised to do was download Windows Microsoft security as this would sort the problem out, so I did this and I still cannot download my updates.
I have also clicked on the "Turn Windows features on or off" and it this is saying I need to check or uncheck the boxes but no boxes are showing when I do this!
I have no idea what to do next and I would appreciate some help please, Thank you Carol!

Welcome to TSG, subversive

This is a bug in XP, unfortunately.

It can be disabled in the following way

open Notepad, Start | Programs | Accessories | Notepad

Copy or Paste the following in red to Notepad

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"Start_NotifyNewApps"=dword:00000000

Click File | Save As
Change Save as Type to All Types
Give the file the name of Disablenewprog.reg

Save to a location that you can remember
Close notepad

Find Disablenewprog.reg
Double click on it
It will ask if you want to merge the file, click Yes

Hey Guys, first of all Hi to everyone on the forums, its my first post!
Basically I have had this problem for a pretty long time now, every time I turn the computer on I get the message

> New CPU Installed! Please enter SETUP to configure your system.
> Press F1 to Run Setup
> Press F2 to load default values and continue

My computer works fine, its just annoying to have to press F2 all the time.
This started happening when I re-attached my whole motherboard onto a new case about 3 months ago. Everything works fine, but I get that message every time I
boot up the computer, and have to press F2 all the time. I tried switching the CMOS Jumpers from position 1-2 to 2-3 for 10 seconds like the motherboard manual told me,
plugged the cord back in, booted up but still the same problem..
I googled this matter, but there wasn't really anyone who had had the same problem as me. It seems like a rare problem.. My motherboard is a P4P800. What do you guys think?

Hi everyone,

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium on an HP laptop and I have automatic Windows updates activated. Earlier today when I finished a session, 6 updates were installed. I've just switched the computer on again and got the message "Configuring Windows updates" as often happens following these updates.

However, on this occasion, it remained on 0% complete for several minutes and then eventually displayed the message "Failure configuring updates - reverting changes". Following that, the boot-up sequence went OK.

Does anyone have any ideas about why the configuration process might have failed and what the implications are? I'm wondering whether Windows might attempt to re-apply the updates when I end this session, with the same outcome. In fact, I can see that there are currently updates to be done, so I suspect they are the same ones. If so, I suppose I might need to disable the automatic Windows updates facility, although I would be reluctant to do so.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Your advice and help as always will be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I've just checked the Windows Update log. Only one update is listed as having been done today - that is shown as:

Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2506928)

So does that mean that the other 5 updates failed for some reason? I wasn't attending the computer while the updating was happening, so I don't know whether any messsages might have been displayed at the time.

Answer:"Failure configuring updates" message - advice please!

Bruce, this may be relevant.

I noticed today that I had 4 updates to be installed. So, I clicked to install, and after rebooting, received the same error message. Tried it again, same message.

So, I got to the list of updates, unclicked the first one (KB982018), and was able to install the rest of them. Computer rebooted and completed the install. Now I only had 1 update left, KB982018.

I was able to click on it, get it installed, and now all is well again.

Computer must have had indigestion the first few times, but doing it separately, it worked. Not sure if my "reverse order" method was necessary, but it didn't hurt anything.

Good luck.

Hi,
Can anyone help me? My computer is stuck in a constant reboot with a message that states "configuring updates stage 3 of 3" I am unable to locate the original Vista cd.
Thanks!

Answer:Vista keeps rebooting with message "configuring updates 3 of 3"

You need to boot with the VISTA DVD on the next re start and attempt a repair, in this case, System Restore" (that I always turn OFF) ... if a restore to the time before the update was successful, load Windows, turn Automatic Updates OFF temporarily, Update all your hardware firmware if any, including Motherboard BIOS, update all your drivers from the manufacturer's web site, any other updates for programs and device utilities available, install KB937287 then turn Automatic updates ON and allow windows to install needed updates by itself.

When I turn on my computer the"Windows could not check for updates automatically" message has been appearing for about six weeks It also says click here to check for updates now.
I click and the message tells me to restart to install most recent updates.
It lists my most recent updates as 11/14/12.
Yet when I check for my Windows Update History, all my updates are current thru today's date.

Why does this message always appear about Windows failing to update automatically, yet when I look at my updates they are all current?

Answer:"Windows could not check for updates automatically" message

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.
Then follow the instructions in Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the results.

Or maybe it is "Required updates need to be downloaded". I don't remember. In any case thee is only one option given: download or install. When this message appears the whole display is locked. Sometimes Esc removes the popup; sometimes Esc (and everything else) is ignored. If Esc is ignored, the only option is to force power down. The message doesn't even indicate that this is Windows talking about a fix from Microsoft. It really looks like malware so I never let it proceed. If it is a valid Windows fix it will show up in the Update Status display after I reboot. I understand that Windows really wants me to install a fix when this happens, but why does Esc sometimes work and sometimes not? And what prompts this popup for some fixes and not for others?

Can anyone tell me in what folder on the hard drive I will find the Updates that are "already installed".

Clarification: I'm not asking about the ones that have been downloaded and are not yet installed (i.e. Windows/Software distribution). Also, I am aware that I can "view installed updates" via the control panel.

But I'm looking for the folder where the installed updates actually reside.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Answer:What folder contains "Installed" updates

I have been looking and I find KB's all over the place.
Why if i may ask are you looking for such a storage place?

Have you implemented any form of Windows update block?

Or perhaps (as you're uncertain about the message) the update has been downloaded but has not been installed because it requires a restart and it's during your active hours period?

Note the exact message as the two cases are quite different and search for literally that message.

I bought my HP Pavilion laptop in July 2013. It is running Windows 7 Home Edition and seems to be running very well, except for the behavior of Windows Updates. My ?problem? is that I'm not sure whether its behavior really is a problem.

Quite often while it is shutting down, a warning message appears in a very pretty light blue screen. The message reads "Please do not power off or unplug your machine. Installing update 1 of n...". The ?n? may vary from 2 or 3, to 11 or 12.

When I later restart the computer and click on "Start-->All Programs-->Windows Update-->View update history", a Control Panel window opens and displays a long list of installed updates. The ?Status? column for most of them reads ?Successful?. (see attached image #1 "view update history.jpg")

But if I click the Control Panel link to "See also-->Installed Updates", it reports "No updates are installed on this computer." (see attached image #2 "No updates are installed.jpg")

Recently when I clicked on a small popup which said something like "Click here to install updates", the Windows Update pane of the Control Panel opened and displayed the message "Windows could not search for new updates / An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. / Error(s) found: / Code 80080005 Windows Update encountered an unknown error." Hi,

I'm using Windows 10 th2-10511 x64 and when I install EMET 5.5 final the EMET system service is installed with the "delayed start" flag and the service and never starts after a reboot. The same thing happened with the beta version, I didn't notice
it until the final was released. This issue doesn't occurs with EMET 5.2.
I switched the service back to the normal Automatic (not delayed) start, and everything seems to be working again. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this issue?

Also, can someone enlighten me about this warning message "DEP/ASLR Policy settings are ineffective by default; see user's guide on how to enable them". It appears when I enable the DEP/ASLR EMET GPO. I couldn't find any reference to this warning
message in the user guide. DEP seems to be enabled, I have no idea how to check for ALSR other than Process hacker that shows ASLR as N/A.
Thanks

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

2. Found corrupted files and repair is successful.
3. Found corrupted files but unable to repair some of them.

At first I completed the download and than waited for around 3 hours for "preparing for installation" and than when i again started the updating after the restart it is showing "checking for update" from past an hour.
What should i do?

Answer:Why does windows to update stuck at "checking for updates" and "preparing for installation" ?

The OS is probably missing some updates during the upgrade process. Be patient and let the process work on its own.

This is not really a problem, more like a nerdy technical question, since I like being informed about the goings-on in my PC. I hope I posted it in the right section, since IMVU would probably fall more under "game" than anything else.

I have always been curious as to why would the developers of the chat client IMVU decide to have the program install within C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\IMVUClient (previous versions did so under "Documents and Settings") instead of "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" on Windows... I am also curious if this unconventional choice could potentially make my PC vulnerable to attacks.

Now, the program works fine AFAIK, but I'm puzzled by this. I'm the kind of user who likes having the choice of installing apps in a drive other than C: (to free space in C:, for portability, etc.), and who gets nervous when apps do not install or behave the way that I'm used to.

I was told by someone more knowledgeable than me that it was probably a lazy way to get around administrative install rights in Windows Vista and Windows 7. He also added that the cache data of the program shouldn't be in Roaming when there is no upper limit or even default size set on it.

And yes, this has been asked on their forums, but no staff member ever answered it (only a forum mod, who didn't have a clue).

Any ideas? Or am I being overly paranoid?

Ed.

I couldn't find such tweak.. This is a major issue to me. I need the "Favorites" pane back where i can drop whatever i want. I use that daily! I can't stay on 10 without it. Also, about updates, i saw there are tweaks to stop forced updates but then how is it? Do you get to choose what you want, one by one, like in the previous Windows? Please tell me, thanks!

Answer:Can i get back "Favorites" in place of "Quick access"? And updates..

You still have "Favorites"...just right click a folder or file and click "Pin to Quick Access".

If you don't want your recently used files and folders to appear there, uncheck the respective check boxes in Folder Options (it's under privacy).

I have Windows XP Pro., sp3.

When you install a new program, what determines where it is listed: All Users>Start Menu>Programs or "user name">Start Menu>Programs?

reoneill

Answer:What determines if a program is installed under "All Users" or "user name"?

Usually some of the programs give you an option to install it under your user name or for all users during the setup process. So say if I was installing (CVTae) a resume programming on a Windows XP computer it will after the installation process ask me if I want to install it as all users (so it will show up on the all users start menu so everyone can see it) or just for me. That's where you can decide for yourself where you want to install it.

'So usually it's the user's choice of where it's listed in most cases, but certainly not in all cases.

Hope that helps mate.

I am able, however, to get on the Internet with Internet Explorer. When I Clean the Disk, the number value of stuff to erase increases rather than get wipped out. It is now up over 300,000 MB's. It slowly started at 25 MB's and has grown very, very slowly. I Clean the Disk and Degfrag every time I use the computer.

My system is a Dell Dimension 3000 using Windows XP Home Edition.

This ubiquitous error message constantly pops up and blocks me from doing certain things. I have tried Restoring the computer to an earlier date. I have used the Dell drivers to try to clean the hard drive, but I am blocked.

I first noticed this in early November 2008. The Verizon Anti-Virus System did nothing to alert me to any viruses.

I have spent a good amount of time trying to solve the problem, but it is out of my knowledge of information.

Any help is appreciated.

Ok let us start simply
This may just be a corrupted install of firefox or and incompatability issue with a add-on.

Some Firefox issues can be resolved by downloading a new Firefox installer from Mozilla.com and then closing Firefox, deleting the Firefox installation directory and reinstalling Firefox. (On a typical Windows install, you would delete the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox folder and then reinstall Firefox using the "Standard" Setup Type.) Another option would be to uninstall Firefox and then reinstall into a different folder location, which is done using the "Custom" Setup Type on Windows and choosing a different Destination Folder for the install location (e.g., C:\Program Files\Firefox3). [3]

or for a completely clean install of FF

* First, download an official version of Firefox from Mozilla.com (or download Firefox 2 if your system can't run the current version) and save it to your desktop or other location. Avoid unofficial download sites that bundle Firefox with other software such as the Google Toolbar.
* Next, completely uninstall your current version of Firefox as outlined in Uninstalling Firefox. (Note that removing the Firefox installation directory will also fix some problems related to old or incompatible browser plugins on Windows systems, by removing plugin files that may be contained in the C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins folder.)

So the other night i was watching a movie on my computer and i realized i needed to plug in my ipod to charge for the night, so i went to plug in the usb cord without the ipod hooked to the other end, and i went to plug the usb cord in my front panel usb port and all of a sudden my computer reboots and when its loading back up, it stops at my bios and it says "new cpu installed press F1 to setup or F2 to load defaults".

I was confused by what just happened, so when i booted back into windows i tried restarting a couple of times to see if it did it again and it didnt. So i then did some googling and found some forums with people with similar problems and everyones answer was that their CMOS battery was probably low and to get it replaced but i just built this computer like a month ago so i know its not a bad battery.

Anyways, this morning before i went to work, i shut down my computer and turned it back on and that message came up again, so i just loaded windows and let it be. After work i shut down my computer and turned it back on 3 times and it didnt happen once. Any idea what could have caused this weird episode?

Answer:"New CPU installed" message

The mysteries you describe are above my pay grade that's for sure. Come to think of it I probably would have taken the F1 path.

Anyway you say it's back up and running, so that should suppress some of your anxiety.

I don't know if it's even the right approach, but had this occurred to my machine, I would have booted into BIOS and opted to "load failsafe defaults", and/or reset the CMOS by removing the battery. The BIOS is responsible for detecting exactly which CPU is in there, so if it suddenly remembered, personally I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.

It's been a month since my laptop gone wrong. All programs doesn't run properly, and stop working many times. Media Player, Office, Internet explorer, all stop working frequently, and I have to wait ten second until five minutes to continue my work.

Two days ago I noticed that when I downloaded windows update, the updates wasn't saved in OS folder like it used to be. New folders named like "1ee10074..." appeared in my hard disk. I realized that the problems begin when I found new folder like this in my hard disk, and now the problems is getting worst after updates. I thought my "OS" was full, but the indicator say "11.8 GB free of 58.5 GB".

I can't delete or move the folder without permission, and try to copy them to "OS". Now each time I open a file, two windows are opened, one is my opened file and the other is blank window.

I don't have enough knowledge about computer. Can anyone help me, please?

Answer:How to fix "not responding" problem in all programs and "lost updates"

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

That temp file that you mentioned, is it in the root of the system drive?
In other words is it located here: C:\1ee10074....

If that is where it is, then it could be from a .NET update. They do not always remove that randomly named folder. Don't delete it just yet, go inside of it (say continue to the permissions security pop ups). If you find several folders with 4 numbers for the name, then it is probably from an update. Those numbered folders are for different languages. You can delete the folder if you want or just leave it. The folder is not the cause of your problems.

Note: I can't take any screen shots because my problematic laptop won't even start up fully.

So as a bit of background, my 6-year-old Toshiba A505-S6005 laptop battery has been horrible for ages (as in my laptop MUST be plugged in at all times or else it will immediately spontaneously turn off without a proper shut-down. It also spontaneously turns off it it overheats or starts working too hard or something), so I don't use it very much - but it's where I keep all my music and movies, and I've been gradually transferring these files to other devices, which is why I still use it occasionally...

Anyway, 2 nights ago, I downloaded and installed updates, and after taking a while to install updates, it stayed on the "shutting down..." screen for a long time... And when I woke up the next morning, it was STILL on the "shutting down" screen - and it had been 8 hours by that point (I was actually very surprised that it hadn't spontaneously turned off overnight). So I did a force-turn-off because I thought it would start up ok.

Today, I turned on the computer figuring it would boot up ok. So we get to the start-up screen - it even spends a mere split second on the usual improper-shut-down-how-would-you-like-to-start-up screen (it usually spends 30 seconds on that screen) and it goes through "configuring updates," and this took a while, and then it went back to the "shutting down..." screen. And it was stuck there for about 20 minutes be... Read more

Windows Update error code 80070490 appeared on 20 September 2013 and message "Windows can't check for updates". I use Windows Vista Home basic 32 bit, Service Pack 2. I tried almost all suggestions in Internet (including these on Microsoft Web-page) about this how to fix this problem, including Microsoft Fix It, System Update Readiness Tool, Windows Update Diagnostics DIAGCAB file and etc., but the message continue to appear. The last successful update was on 13.09.2013. All updates made before and on 13 September are written as "successful" in "Update history" folder, but when I open "Installed Updates" folder, I don't see nothing and there is written "No updates are installed on this computer", which is strange, because by this moment Windows Update was made automatically without any problems. In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Microsoft Updater says I have a critical update (KB2286198) to install but it fails and gives the message: "WindowsUpdate_80246007" "WindowsUpdate_dt000".

I've tried a couple of things that MS Support suggests but they don't work and don't seem to really apply to this particular error message. Searching for the error code 80246007 hasn't yielded anything yet that works.

Any ideas?

I was messing with my ASUS N10j and I tried to install Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit on it.

Installation went fine, but then when it wanted to boot up for the first time, it gave me a window that said "Can not open recovery.dat" and a huge red ERROR message appeared in the middle of the screen.

From googling, these guys (http://www.overclock.net/windows/435626-error-recovery-dat.html) believe its because of a hidden recovery partition. Well, how do I delete that partition if I don't have access to Windows?

The laptop also doesn't have a DVD-drive, so the solution has to be via USB.

I have no clue what to do. Help!

EDIT: Ugh... I guess this is more software related... Sorry.

Answer:Red "ERROR" message because "Can not open file C:Recovery.dat"

Greetings, RommelTJ...

Couple of things you might consider trying:

* Boot to a Linux USB drive, and format your hard drive from that environment - tips on how to create a Mint 7 (Gloria) bootable flash drive can be found here...

* Get your hands on a USB DVD drive, and use it to boot to your Windows disk to delete/recreate any partitions...

Quick question: how are you trying to install Vista without an optical drive?

Another question/puzzle. Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

I clean installed W8.1 three days ago, and the first thing I did was bring it up to date with all the offered updates. All installed successfully and I thought no more of it. At some point after this I made a system image backup, which today I have restored to. When I now look at the "classic" windows update screen it says I have never checked for updates and none are installed. Forcing a check for updates brings only two up as can be seen in the pictures. If I go to "view installed updates" then there is a lot of stuff in there, whih I assume could be the previously installed original batch.
I'm guessing this is normal behaviour but it seems slightly odd (the on screen messages at least)

Answer:No update history says "never checked" & "never installed"

Not odd... Considering that is a "clean install"(albeit with integrated updates) - thus no update history (file) exists.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

Hi there,
Can someone please help to shed some light on this, or possibly fix this issue?
I've been trying for ages to get my parents computer to download and install updates.
It's running 7 Home Premium 64 bit with SP1.
The Windows Update page shows that Windows could not search for updates, which resulted in the error 8007370B
The link on that page to get help for this error has no results.
The system update readiness tool failed to fix the issue
sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt results in the error message
Windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation.
I also tried to force WSUS offline updates, but ended up having to remove the temp admin account and cancel the updates when that failed.

After privacy protection installed itself I no longer have a desktop. The task bar is still on the screen as well as the start menu. But when I click on the start menu there is nothing on it. The only programs that are running are " privacy protection", "windows security center", and "XP anti-virus 2012". All three of these are running completely by themselves and I never installed or downloaded any of them. I cannot get on the internet or do anything with my computer. I know that privacy protection and XP anti-virus 2012 are fake virus protection but when my computer was still somewhat functional, these programs did not allow me to run anything which made it hard to fight it off. I have some really important stuff on my computer and I would hate to lose it all.

Hi y'all,

I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem, so if I am in the wrong place, I apologize. I cannot access a photo file folder that is on an external hard drive. Depending on how I try to get to the file, I get either a "corrupt file" message or "i/o error message". I cannot delete the folder, cannot move the folder, and I can't do a defrag on that hard drive because of the folder. Chkdsk did not show any problems with the hard drive. I have just gone through the deep cleaning as listed on this forum, but nothing out of the way showed up on my external hard drive. I would appreciate any help with solving this problem. Stats: hp pavilion760N, win xp, service pack 2, seabolt external 160 gigharddrive with 45gig free. Thanks, Diane

Answer:get either "file corrupted" or "i/o error message"

Does the error message arise when you access the file or the folder? If it is only the file, then I would recommend getting everything else off of the external temporarily and then getting a tool from the external drive vendor to reformat. You lose the file but regain the drive.

Cheers.

I have been using the same HP Pavilion tx1000 for a year and a half with no software or compatibility issues. I run Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 1 - 32 bit. Slowly this message began to appear with every microsoft program I opened and then started to spread to non microsoft programs. I tried reinstalling the programs, doing a system restore to the oldest restore point I could, I also tried uninstalling any window updates that were installed right before my problems. I have read some strings that indicate it may be a compatibility issue between the service pack 1 and vista but the service pack came with the computer and it has been working fine until recently. Hi;
Had a sudden inability to go much further than a third or forth-level download on ANY given webpage and then PC would seize-up, requiring "cont+alt+del" in order to get freed-up. Thought perhaps I picked-up a bug of some sort during a recent google search, and went immediately to Panda and Trendmicro to perform both virus as well as malware scans. While the Panda scan was loading-up, I received the following error message....

... " DoPatch....dll reports error....Error "C:\WINNT\patch.utp"....unreadable or not a patch file..."

Was able to complete both scans. Nothing found other than tracking cookies.

I then did a file serch for the above and located it. It was installed TODAY apparently, and not by me, within minutes of the problem starting.

I'm guessing someone/thing slipped this patch into my WINNT file or modified it while I was doing the google search, so I have included a HJT scan below.

Hope this all makes sense and ties-out to something. Any help would be genuinely appreciated-
thanks

Is there anything else I can do please?

The title pretty much says it all. I stopped receiving automated downloads of Windows 7 updates in Dec 2016 (even though my system is checked for receiving automated updates). I went to Windows Catalog and found updates released after Dec 2016, downloaded
them, and when I try to install, the infamous "searching for updates on this computer" pops up and does nothing. I can't even cancel it. I have to right-click on the program line at the bottom of the screen and exit it that way.

Any suggestions as to how to proceed?

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

Hi,

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

Answer:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

Hi,
As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

Hi

I have recently bought an LCD logic LCX20LN1 20" tv which has a pc input. When i booted up my pc with the new screen attactched, just after the windows loading screen came up it came up with this message on the screen "out of range". Also the TFT screen that i used before that was 17" if that helps.

Thanks

Did you uninstall the drivers for your previous monitor before installing the new one?

"out of range" is most commonly caused by a resolution\frequency setting that the monitor does not support.

Answer:"The following updates were not installed: Security Update for Microsoft .NET ...

I am assuming that you have administrative privileges and that you have enough disk space. Also, you might check to make sure that a spyware/anti-virus program is not blocking the install.

How are you updating? clicking the icon in the sys-tool bar? if so, then open up IE, and click Tools, then windows update, try using that instead.

If this doesn't work, then try and find a Manual update.

Note this is just basically repeating what I said in another forum, but it is a good start.
