Windows Update API returns more updates than Windows Update app offers

Question: Windows Update API returns more updates than Windows Update app offers

I am using Windows Update API (WUApiLib) in C# to get available updates. And it appears that it displays some driver updates while Windows Update application tells that the device is up to date.

It returns me this (I'm using ASUS laptop):

ASUS - Other hardware - ASUS Wireless Radio Control
Intel - Other hardware - Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 4 - 1E16
Intel - Other hardware - Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family SMBus Host Controller - 1E22
Intel - Other hardware - 3rd Gen Core processor DRAM Controller - 0154
Intel - Other hardware - Xeon(R) processor E3 - 1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor PCI Express Root Port - 0151
Intel - Other hardware - Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 1 - 1E10
Intel - Other hardware - Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family PCI Express Root Port 2 - 1E12
Intel - Other hardware - Intel(R) HM76 Express Chipset LPC Controller - 1E59
Intel - Other hardware - Intel(R) Management Engine Interface
Qualcomm Atheros Communications - Bluetooth Controller - Bluetooth Module

Is there a way to enable these updates via Windows settings? Also ESET reported me these updates as not installed?

If you are curious what it returns on your system, give it a go. I am attaching a very simple application (command line) to display not installed updates. Just unzip and execute. If you are afraid of viruses, here is the source code: You can even decompile it (it's .NET).

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When you use Microsoft Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or the Automatic Updates feature, you are repeatedly offered the same update after you try to install it, the this article may help you troubleshoot the problem.
This problem occurs when one of the following conditions is true:
- An error occurred during installation. The update was not installed.
- The update was installed. However, a file was not updated when the computer restarted.
To identify the method to use to resolve the problem, determine whether the update was installed. Then apply the Hotfix or use one of the methods in KB910339. Also see Windows Updates Troubleshooter.

I have a new T470p (type 20J6) with Windows 10 Enterprise x64 Build 16296 and System Update v5.07.0065. When I run System Update I am shown 11 optional updates. I select all these updates, click 'Next >' then 'Download'. The packages are downloaded and installed (9 successful, 2 could not be installed) then I reboot the laptop. If I then run System Update again I am offered exactly the same 11 optional updates. I've been through the entire process 5 or 6 times now. How can I 'reset' System Update so it doesn't keep offering me the same updates which it says have been successfully installed? UPDATE: If I install and use the 'Lenovo Companion' app and select 'System Update' from there I am told 'No updates are available. Your system is up to date'.

I'm currently on Windows 7 x64 Pro. For a while now, I've had windows update set to only get the update list and then let me choose when and what to install. Today I opened the program to do a check of new updates and download / install them, but I'm presented only with the option to upgrade to windows 10. The problem is that I don't want to install Windows 10.

The problem is that I've read many at best marginal reports (as well a many scathing condemnations) of user experiences with Win 10 and have decided that I don't want to take the upgrade at this time. That said, it seems MS is intent on preventing me from even attempting to install Win 7 updates because there doesn't appear to be a way to begin installing them. The are available to select for download under the available updates page, but selecting them and pressing 'Ok' simply takes me back to the main screen with only the option to begin my upgrade process and no option to download / install the selected updates.

Is there any way around this, or am I really only presented with the option of running an insecure machine or updating to Win 10?

PS: I have to say for the record that being pressured to make the upgrade to the point that MS seems to be forcing it through without giving me the option to decide for myself doesn't really give me the warm fuzzies about upgrading at all...

Answer:Windows update only offers the option to start downloading windows 10

Allow me to make several subjective comments. First, although, you have heard many negative comments about Windows 10, I have used the OS, since the release and am more than happy with its performance. I have experience with Windows 98, Vista and Seven and now 10 and 10 is the best by far. Since this is only one man's opinion allow me to discuss the updates.
If you have not already given it a try, hide, the problem update. When you see it just right click and then indicate hide. The effect will be as though it was never there.
If you facts, are as you state, I would agree that you have every right to be unhappy with the circumstances.

On a Toshiba laptop running Win 7 x64 Home Premium, I am being offered to install IE 11--as an Optional installation. However, IE 11 is ALREADY installed and working (though I think it may be a little slow in functioning--that is not clear.) Can anyone explain why this would be, and whether I should go ahead and accept what looks essentially like a Re-Install by Windows Update of an existing Windows module in Win 7?

One thing that just occurred to me: Because I was having some problems with this system, I did the Windows Update Fix-it/analysis, and ran the Windows System Update Readiness Tool. Then I also ran Disk Cleanup, including also deleting some of the older update packages through the cleanup tool. Could this have affected Windows Update and caused IE 11 to re-present as an install option? And again--what should I expect if I go ahead and install it (although it shows as already an installed browser??)

Answer:Windows Update offers IE 11 installation--but it is already installed!

I don't seem to be getting much action on this thread (although there have been quite a few views), and it looks to me like this is not a usual problem. BTW, I don't think I mentioned that I ran the System File Checker (SFC) after SURT, etc. and that it showed no problems.

I looked around a lot before posting, and I did not find this exact issue come up anywhere--although there are many recent similar issues with Windows Update. I suppose the one thing I would like to hear some opinions about is whether I should run the update and install IE 11 through WU, even though it is already installed. Is WU telling me that there will be some improvement if I re-install? And do I trust it? How do I know that isn't going to just mess things up?

In researching this issue, I came across things like problems with KB3032359 & KB3021952 being repeatedly installed. That didn't happen on this laptop. Both of those two updates failed instead, along with a number of others that failed. But WU made no attempt to reinstall those two. Nevertheless, others that failed initially appear to have since installed properly.

[BTW, it would be SOOOOO nice if Microsoft were to give one the ability to search the updates history by KB to find the history for that particular KB,...but maybe that is just too logical a computer function for a computer company to do it?... Or perhaps I missed something obvious in Windows Update....]

It was because I was getting so many updates failing, plus... Read more

i upgraded from win 7 to win 10 in early august. no problems. i've been installing all updates since then and installed updates always showed status of updates. after installing fall update i noticed my update history was erased and any updates since, like defender definition files, don't appear in the list. only one update is listed: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3103688) installed on 11/14/2015.

Dear all,

After I successfully updated my ASUS Rampage III Extreme BIOS (from the BIOS), I got booted into an older configuration of Windows 7.

I lost all my new files, and everything went back to what looks like an old restore point.
I have attached some photo's from the BIOS. I am not much of a computing expert to decode what the some of the BIOS configs mean, but I guess they look alright..?

I also have a screenshot from Disk Management.

BTW: I also run my 2 Intel X-25M's SSDs in a RAID1 (Mirror)

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.
I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.
Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :
Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.
Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.
Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.
Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.
Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.
Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.
Thank you.

You could also set it to not check for updates while you are on holiday.

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help

I reformat and clean-reinstall Windows roughly on a monthly basis. Now using the Windows 10 1709 iso for this purpose.
I have all auto-updates turned off (Windows 10 Pro) via group policy editor.
After first boot, I run a batch file that installs Windows updates (.msu files) that I downloaded from the Windows update catalog.

The problem is, that when I go to the Windows update panel it says "Updates are available" and the listed updates are the same that I already installed via the .msu files. Furthermore, Windows update's "View installed updates history" confirms that those updates have been successfully installed too, so my install via batch file worked as intended.
If I start the update process it will really re-download those already installed updates (I monitored network activity to confirm the download). I checked because at first I hoped that as soon as the Windows update process started it would recognize that the update is already applied and skip the download and install, but presumably it needed to go through the exercise to recognize it was already installed; this wasn't the case as the updates really appear to be downloaded anew.

Anyone knows why Windows keeps detecting the same updates that were already installed?
Is there something broken with .msu updates and it does not fully report having installed those, so Windows thinks they aren't installed and they download again (even though they show as installed in "View installed updates... Read more

Does anyone have some suggestions to correct the stalled update procedure.

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

I don't know how to obtain CheckSUR.log.

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:
Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.
You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I'm not ready yet to upgrade to Windows 10 on my main computer (still waiting for some of the initial problems to be resolved) but in the mean time my anti-virus is complaining that "Windows isn't up to date" but when I go to Windows Updates it offers me the option to Upgrade to Windows 10 and below that it says "Show all available updates"; if I click on that I see a list of about 25 updates and when I check off all of them the only options on that screen are Ok and Cancel; if I click Ok I'm back to the previous screen and there doesn't appear to be any way to install the updates that I just checked off.

Btw, I have the automatic update options set to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them", I set that mainly because I hated having Windows install and reboot when I wasn't looking and messing up whatever I happened to be working on. Any ideas how to install these selected updates?

I go to Metro Store because it shows there are 3 to update: Skype, Norton Studio and Kindle.None of these applications appear in Control Panel's Uninstall Program list nor are they found in the Programs folder.I don't know why the updates are being offered and don't want to install the apps.Anyone know how to get it to stop offering the app updates?I searched Google and Here but find nothing related.(It is possible that this HP Pavilion came with Norton Studio and was removed on day 1 but find no remnants of it)

Answer:Windows store offers updates for apps not installed

These applications may be on the All apps start menu. Right-click a blank portion on the start menu and click show all apps on the right bottom corner. Now carefully scrutinize all the apps that are installed. These app may not be in the Program Files folder ( and/or Program Files (x86) Folder ).You may stop the updates being offered. This tutorial may be useful.CoolGuy

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

When you use Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) to install updates, you may experience one or more of the following issues: You are offered an update for a product, but the update is not downloaded or installed on your computer. You are repeatedly offered an update, even if you have already installed this update multiple times.A particular update failed to install. KB906602 discusses how to troubleshoot these issues.

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

hi HussinBhy,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
With Windows 8 there was a certain service that has to be disabled "Nalperion Service" then proceed with the updates manually by 4 or by 5 updates only
If Windows 7, You just have to make sure your Antivirus is not blocking anything by disabling them temporarily
and most of all Try installing it by 4 or by 5 updates only,  as it may be overlapping some updates if you will install everything at same time.

Try System Restore to before the problem began. This might force Updates to install correctly this time.

If not work through these steps:

System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

If these don't help check the System File integrity: SFC /SCANNOW Command

Everytime Windows downloads Windows updates, it is successfull downloading and installing, however, I then get a message saying: Failure configuring Windows Updates, Reverting Changes, Do Not turn off your computer.

I have gotten Windows Fixit for Windows Updates and installed....but that does not clear up the problem.
I have not wanted to use Restore feature of Windows 7, since I have installed many critical programs that I use.
Is there any other solution out in Cyberspace that will help resolve the "Failure Configuring Windows Updats".

Hi there.
I bought a new Samsung ultrabook less than a month ago and about two weeks ago ir started showing the following message "Failure Configuring Windows Updates, reverting changes". I've tried to do all of the steps adviced in here "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" error when you try to install Windows updates and none seem to work. I even tried do a system restore but at the end, after i've waited like 1 hour, it said it wasn't possible, probably due to my anti-virus being on. I tried to switch it off and did it again, only to get the same message.
Can anybody help me?
I've read somewhere around here that if i copied some files, zipped it and posted here someone would be able to see what's wrong, so here is the link:
Thanks in advance!

Hi Susana.

You'll be best off by uninstalling your antivirus for two reasons.

1) To fix your Windows Update issue.
2) To make the machine work as intended, as right now, it obviously cannot.

It is also best to use the removal tool from the antivirus maker's website after normal uninstall.

You can try your luck with another antivirus solution, but Windows does already include one by default. It is enabled by default but installing other antivirus solutions turns it off.

To turn it on again, type services.msc in the Start screen then press Enter. Set Windows Defender and Windows Firewall to Automatic and start them too.

Delete all the contents in this folder: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Reboot and try your Windows Update again.

In the last month or so Windows Update has stopped checking for updates automatically in Windows 1607. I have Windows Update set to notify and usually I would get a daily notification You need some updates. Usually there is a Windows Defender definition update waiting to be downloaded, but that has not be happening recently. Has anyone else on Windows 1607 seen this issue?

Answer:Windows Update has stopped checking for updates in Windows 1607

Hi, you shouldn't expect Windows updates daily, but Defender would be updated frequently of course (and I hope silently - I don't use it). There has been a Windows update in the last 3 days or so- today for me.

What happens if you click Check for Updates (via Settings, Update....)

Try the troubleshooter (below).

I've been running XP on my machine for several years and the latest reinstall went very smoothly until I updated my bios. It may be unrelated to updating my bios but this seems to be the only change I had made at the time. It prevented a lot of applications from running, from Windows Live Messenger, to various games e.t.c.

I assumed it was to do with my bios, so I pulled the battery out of the motherboard (also shorted the 3 pin switch thing). This didn't seem to make any difference.

I recently installed Windows 7 (x86) on the same hard drive and partition, expecting this to cure the problem and start fresh, however Windows 7 seems to be having a similar problem in that I get errors on Windows Update (8007065E,800B0100 and 80070003). I've tried manually installing some of the failed updates too and just get a "failed" message.

This makes me assume that it's either still a problem with the bios, or perhaps with my hard drive.

Does anyone know of any software I can use to perhaps scan for issues with the hard drive, or with the bios?

Answer:Solved: Windows Update won't install some updates (XP or Windows 7 on same machine)

Well, after trying all the fixes available on the internet for those particular error codes to no avail, I ran Kill Disk on the partition, re-installed Windows 7 and it appears to be running smoothly, with all service packs and updates installing fine

About a month ago, I used the built-in Windows 10 recovery method to reinstall Windows 10. I still had a few glitches from my original Windows 7 installation, and these have been resolved by the reinstall.

One thing I've noticed, however, is that I'm getting an error message whenever I try to install the definition update for Windows Defender:

Definitie-update voor Windows Defender - KB2267602 (definitie 1.215.1024.0) - Fout 0x80070643

I already tried sfc /scannow, and it didn't find anything that required fixing. I also tried MicrosoftFixit.msi and NetFxRepairTool.exe, because Googling the error message brought me the news that it was related to the .NET framework.

To be clear: I don't use Windows Defender right now. I got Norton Security installed and it serves me well. I know some people consider it a resource hog, but I've tried Avira as a recommendation by Tom's Guide and it was even worse. My Norton still lasts over 200 days so I have plenty of time if I want to replace it by then. However, I do want Windows to be fully updated, and not having that update finished just stands out like a red ship in a sea of white.

I've considered that this error might be because of Norton, but I didn't have issues before resetting Windows, so I don't see why it would be Norton that suddenly throws a fit about it.

How do I fix this?

I am trying to fully update my Vista Home Premium 32bit laptop fully prior to installing Windows 7 update. All goes well until the new update agent installed. My laptop would not download updates after that. The update agent downloaded and installed without
my instruction. I had purposely set the downloads to my choosing to download and install. This is the 3rd time I have reloaded windows to correct the corruption from the windows update agent so I am certain of the exact point updates stopped working. I have
a Toshiba laptop that is running fine. I want to know If there is any way to keep this Malware from loading again. I have been seeing that Windows 7 has been having the same trouble with this same Update Agent.  I have tried all the Microsoft Fixit and
readiness tools with no effect on the offending update agent and since we cannot uninstall this How am I going to update from this point? I don't trust that installing Windows 7 will do anything to solve the problem of the corruption from this update agent

I've a computer with Windows XP Pro, which is not connected to the internet. Now, I want to update it in order to be all up-to-date and secured again. So I don't mean by just downloading SP2, but by installing all security patches available ever since!
So I need to download everything first, burn it on CD, and then install the patches on my other computer. No problem. But the problem is: where can I download all those updates?! I've searched all over the net, and all I found was; it only contains english updates, and since I've a Dutch version of XP installed, those won't work. Simply changing the urls from xxx-ENU.exe to xxx-NLD.exe doesn't work either, different languages of the same patch seem to be hosted under a whole other url.
So I was wondering whether any of you guys have a list of links to Dutch Windows XP Professional updates, or an all-in-one package. Because other updates than the SP2 'Network installation' don't seem to be directly downloadable for the PC in the Dutch language, but using the windows-update page.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I apologize if this is in the wrong category.

This is really starting to *** me off,
before when your computer went belly up, reinstalling windows was time consuming, but not difficult.
now i can't event get the computer to find the updates it needs.

So, in short,

good thing i listened.
around November- January, my mother decided she was gonna try it,
i said NO...
long story short she was getting *** off.
at the time i was busy with my college studies.
as exams have just finished, she asked me to fix her laptop.
i said sure, unaware of the *** fire i  was about to take on.

as I progressed, windows finished it's thing,
and i began installing other things, such as Microsoft security essentials.
and then, i opened up windows update, to begin the onslaught of 200+ updates.
after 15 minutes of waiting, i realized something is wrong.
i started googling and going through forums, and found that this is not an uncommon issue.

It is my understanding that one can avoid getting harassed by the Windows 10 update bully is one simply refuses to allow some Windows 7 updates to install. Is this notion correct?

My notes indicate that one should NOT install the KB2952664 and KM3035583 Windows 7 updates to avoid the Windows 10 update bully. Are these two updates the only ones to be avoided? Are there others to avoid? Has someone published an up-to-date list of the Windows 7 updates to avoid? Are their dangers from not installing certain Windows 7 updates?

Guidance, whether that is reference to tutorial(s), direction to previous posts, or anything else would be deeply appreciated.

Late July/early August, I accepted the offer to upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and downloaded the files, but then I changed my mind. However, there seems to be no way to opt out of the Windows 10 update. When I go to the Windows Update screen, there is a message saying 'Your upgrade to Windows 10 is ready' and a button you can click on that says 'Restart now'. When I click on 'check for updates', it tells me I need to restart my PC to finish installing previous updates. When I set it to automatically install updates, the updates immediately show up in the update history as having failed. My update history shows that the last time I successfully downloaded Windows updates was in July. The Windows 10 update seems to be blocking them.

After consulting some articles on how to solve this issue, I've taken the following steps:
I deleted the $Windows.~BT folder which contained the Windows 10 installation files.
I deleted (some of) the Windows updates that had to do with upgrading to Windows 10: KB3035583, KB3044374 and KB2976978 (KB2976978 still shows up as an installed update, but now it's impossible to right-click to uninstall it).

None of these solved the issue however. I'd be incredibly grateful if someone could help me out.

Answer:Windows 10 update is blocking normal Windows updates

I too had been using windows 10 pro as an insider and yesterday decided to restore my computer back to factory settings.
after downloading all the updates I then went into the store and upgraded to 8.1 pro. after getting all the updates installed it too wanted to download 2.847.8 mb of windows ten which I did but declined the offer to install. It then cleaned up all the files and as with your problem it just keeps coming back.
I will post the problem on the 10 forum and also in the insider and see what I can get.

I am on Windows 8 (original/classic x64 Pro), and since I have now installed all updates, I attempted turning off the Windows Update service, and then tested updating Windows Defender. Voila! It worked.

But if I keep my system in the configuration, will there be an issue running or updating Windows Defender (and would there be a functionality issue for Windows itself in the future)?

Microsoft offers troubleshooting tool to help users easily fix issues with Windows updates

If you've ever encountered an issue while trying to install a Windows update, you'll probably know what a frustrating process it can be to diagnose and resolve the problem.

Microsoft's support documentation for dealing with the error codes generated by such issues isn't always helpful; and information shared by the user community on its support forums can be useful, but is often undermined by conflicting (and sometimes ill-informed) suggestions. Web searches for info on error codes are often a waste of time, and regularly lead to 'solutions' that do more harm than good.

So it's certainly welcome to see Microsoft try to make this whole process a bit easier to deal with, by offering a troubleshooting tool to help users address issues that arise when trying to install Windows updates.

As Microsoft explains:

This guided walk-through provides steps to fix problems when installing updates. Here are some commonly seen error codes: 0x80073712, 0x800705B4, 0x80004005, 0x8024402F, 0x80070002, 0x80070643, 0x80070003, 0x8024200B, 0x80070422, 0x80070020. These steps should help with all errors and not just the ones listed.

How does it work?

We?ll walk you through a series of troubleshooting steps to get your Windows up to date. Be sure to follow the steps in order.

The troubleshooter offers support for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, but notes t... Read more

Hi, I am trying Windows 7 professional 64bit is trying to update my PC now for the umpteenth time. I ask it to download and update. It tells me that it has updated and needs to restart. When it restarts, it has a couple of attempts at configuring the updates and lets me use Windows. When I turn my PC off, I get a 'Do not turn off, etc'. When I start my PC and check to see if the install worked, I am told it hasn't, any clues please?

Answer:Windows 7 updates don't update

I have been through this today and fixed mine.
There are ways MS suggests when you right click on the failed updates and read the help files that contain links to MS downloadable tools of sorts.
After reading about and trying some of the tools with no success I took a hint I read between the lines about running the one with "service pack" in its name alone. I had 10 updates available one of which had service pack in its title. It was "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)"

I ran it alone and it took. Remaining were 4 security and 4 updates for windows and an IE9 update.

I then tried the 4 updates for windows alone and they failed.

Long story short, I tried some alone until they started working and got them all in.
Look at my screen shot and see the order in which I used. The order goes from the bottom up. The Hot Fix you see is one of MS's suggestions I tried that changed nothing.

As long as this is not every time eh?

What version of Windows are you running? You posted in the XP Forum, but your profile says Windows 7?
What part is ugly? This shouldn't be an issue with Windows 7. You can choose to not download the update in Windows Update and put a check in Do Not Remind Me of this Update.

I guessing more than not it's a virus. Actually because of this road block, I haven't been able to update for sometime. When I get to Service Pack 2, it gets "stuck". Just says "Updating" for hours at a time.  Any suggestions ?

I've updated and selected updates in this window before, suddenly I can't see any updates there at all. WU tells me there's 33 optional updates available, when I click and the window to select those and install them appears I can't see any of them. =/ Check the attachment to see what I'm talking about. I've changed setting in Windows Update to see if that was the cause of the problem but it didn't help. Important updates (when I had them) weren't showing either... Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hello guys,
I've encountered a new issue with Windows Update. All of the previous updates have vanished, I couldn't search for new updates, and even though the troubleshooter says it has resolved all issues, I still couldn't search for any new updates.
Because of this, I am unable to update to Windows 8.1. I appreciate your help asap! Thank you.
I'm using Windows 8 (64-bit) on an Acer laptop.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) and recently clicked on the offer to upgrade to Windows 10. I duly installed Windows 10 and quite liked it. But as I don't have a touch-screen nor a mouse and have only a small laptop monitor, I
found Windwos 10 pretty unusable - so I uninstalled it.
The uninstall was painless and I now have Windows 7 running just fine again.  But "Windows Updates" no longer works properly. If I check for updates, there are well over 20 outstanding but when I click ok to install them, all I get
is a screen inviting me to re-install Windows 10 again.
How do I get Windows 10 to go away (for ever)? How can I install the outstanding Windows 7 updates?

There are widespread reports of "windows update says downloading windows 10" when it is not. The rocket scientists in redmond know this is a problem that enrages their customers but true to their time honored business model of making billions
by pissing people off they will do nothing... None of the usual pablum like uninstalling and hiding the piece of crap update that tries to ram windows 10 down everyone's gullet fixes it...

Hi. I'm new here and see a forum about windows updates not being installed. I have the same problem but that thread didn't help me at all to fix the problem.

I have tried to install Windows Installer but will get this message when I try to install it.. " Not enough storage is available to process this command."

I've tried these commands and the first one

regsvr32.exe c:\windows\system32\wuweb.dll says The module failed to load. Make sure the binary is stored at the specified path or debug it to check for problems with the binary or dependent .DLL files.

There are 3 that will not update and haven't for a week. Yes I've been trying and searching that long!!!
#1 Security Update for Microsoft Office Visio Viewer 2007 (KB973709)
Error Code : 646

#2 Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB972581)
Error Code: 646

#3 Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System (KB974234)
Error Code: 646

Any help will be appreciated and much thanks in advance!

Answer:Windows Update will not install updates!

You mention:

" Not enough storage is available to process this command."

Have you actualy checked there is enough space on the drive, I am unsure how much space is needed, but this could be an issue.

Also make sure you dont have any external drives connected when running the update.

Does MS Update give you any KB numbers or error codes?

Hey guys,
I've come across this annoying problem where, Windows Update can't update certain features/drivers. In this case it would be my mouse pad driver and integrated gfx driver... All I get is a notification saying it can't update. On the Windows Update window, this is what I get:
Once I click "Instalar Agora" (Install now), no second window appears, as you would expect from a third party update.
Any suggestions? This is really becoming highly annoying.

Answer:Updates can't be installed - Windows Update

Have you restarted the machine yet? Sometimes that fixes update issues. Also are you sure you're actually receiving an error... Driver updates in Windows 10 are delivered via WSUS as well now so you won't see anything other than the standard windows update procedure.

Quick question about applying updates to my W530: Is it ok to run updates for hardware (graphics, screen, etc.) through Windows Update as they become available? Or should I avoid this and run them through Lenovo's update tools? I'm a little skeptical about the graphics card(s) updates since reading some posts on these forums about trouble with updating and Nvidia Optimus Thanks!

Today it dawned on me i had not seen any windows updates in quiet some time and also my AV Eset had not indicated updates were available either. When attempting to check updates via control panel it hung for quiet some time with a blue spinning circle the eventually took me to the check for updates screen which is red. After clicking the update button i received the dreaded notice"Windows cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running",after readiing up on the problem i have tried the various Microsoft fixes that state they have fixed various problems but still cant update,i have tried stopping the update service and deleting the software folder and restarting the update service but still nothing.
At a guess i think the last updates i did was the November ones which finished with a some updates failed to install properly.
I have also tried the downloads Brink has posted on the site but this has not resolved the problem so i guess its over to you guys/gals to try and help me fix this problem.

I have recently been having problems with windows update and many other things. Basically it won't check for updates. When you click to check for updates, the bar starts but stays stuck searching. I then also notices microsoft security essentials does the same when u try and update. AVG free failed to install and I tried installing google chrome because I hate explorer and it also failed due to windows installer error. I tried manually installing service pack 2 from windows and it also failed. Nothing windows based will update.

I first noticed all this when I moved in with my girlfriend and started using her laptop. It is a decent laptop and the first thing I noticed it was a bit sluggish and I checked the CPU usage and one thing was hogging 70% all the time. It was windows error reporting or something similar which I disabled through systems, but nothing changed. Thats when I tried to update windows and it had 1 important update and 2 optional which I did. I remember one completed and 2 failed I think and after I restarted the computer the updater has not been working at all.

I got tune up utilities but it did not change anything after cleaning up various things. I also got rid one one malware thing from a free month trial with malwarebytes I think.

I have seen people talking about command prompts and cleaning registries but I cant get them to work properly.

I do not get errors report codes which is also a problem because its always frozen on checking for ... Read more

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth give me no errors, repaired with image_health tool of this forum. SFC /Scannow gives me unable to fix some of the corrupted files, here log.SFC Details.txt

Answer:I Can't Find Updates With Windows Update

RE : SFC /Scannow gives me unable to fix some of the corrupted files

Please run this image restorehealth command............................
In the same Command Prompt (Admin) windows, copy and paste this command...........

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth

> press Enter.
Again it will take some time.
When finished, it will give you a report.

If it fails to finish and you get an error message " sources file could not be found ", then use this Tech Bench link below and download the ISO file. You need to do that because you need the Install.wim file which only Tech Bench will provide.

Once you have the iso downloaded, right click at the ISO > click Mount > leave it there.
Then open the same command prompt (Admin), and copy and paste this................

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:H:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess

Note : H is the drive where the iso is mounted. Change it if your driver letter is different.

When it is completed, you should get the report that the operation is successful.
Now run the sfc /scannow again. It should be ok this time.
