MS Defender updates from Windows Update fail, other Updates successful

Question: MS Defender updates from Windows Update fail, other Updates successful

MS Defender updates from Windows Update in settings fail, other Updates successful, but MS Defender from Control panel can update the same definition updates without problems (why, oh, why? can't I just select and copy from settings? )

Over this time, I need to fix insider builds, but have a problem:

SFC and Dism component store health fix report no problems

Any Ideas?

Preferred Solution: MS Defender updates from Windows Update fail, other Updates successful

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: MS Defender updates from Windows Update fail, other Updates successful

I seen your pic - it seems like MS wants us out of preview - no advanced options either..
Looks like we get to keep 10240 - just forget a clean re-installation of it - Key is blocked

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 32 bit.

Yesterday I tried installing the twelve important updates that had appeared for my computer. Nine installed and three got errors (KB2925418, KB2929733 & KB2929961, all failed with error code 80242016). I did the restart anyway and got the BSOD. The PC was recovered using the startup repair tool.

This morning WU still showed 12 updates to be done so I tried again. This time it installed 9 updates and ignored the other 3. The restart worked fine. WU now showed only three updates left. I tried installing KB2929733 & KB 2929961 again. No errors appeared until after the restart and I got the BSOD again. After several attempts the PC rebooted successfully using a previous restore point.

Now the installed updates shows a list of successful updates (and a long list of failed ones) but the successful ones still appear in the list to be installed. These are KB890830, KB2837594, KB2863818, KB2878225 & KB2878227).

SURT was run without errors as was sfc.

Any suggestions on how to get WU to match up its list of what needs to be installed with what is installed?

Answer:Windows Update Still Wants to Install Successful Updates

The SFC scan appears to have only partially completed - only 86 POQs were scanned, while the normal number is at least 120, for a 64-bit system.

This implies that there are registry problems - although CheckSUR found none.

Have you tried a System Restore back to before the system crashed?

Hey guys ... I also posted this on Microsoft's site but I'm assuming no help will come from there. Reserved the Windows 10 upgrade on my desktop, and now I have a slew of issues after a day or two of it working well after upgrading. I am unable to start Windows Defender, three updates are failing and I cannot activate Windows 10. Here's all my issues below, copied from the MS site:

1. Windows Defender fails to start (Error code: 0x800705b4)
Windows Defender won't start and gives the error message "An error has occurred in the program during initialization. If this problem continues, please contact your system administrator." I have already tried uninstalling Avast and have no other third party antivirus.

2. Windows Update KB2267602 fails (Error code: 0x80070643)
This is a definition update for Windows Defender.

3. Windows Update KB3074678 fails (Error code: 0x8000ffff)
This is listed as an update for Windows 10 for x64-based systems

4. Windows Update KB3074686 fails (Error code: 0x8000ffff)
This is listed as an update for Windows 10 for x64-based systems

5. Windows cannot activate
I am also having the issues that other people are having with activation. "Windows can't activate. Try again later." is the error message I get.

Answer:Multiple updates fail, Windows Defender won't start, can't activate

NinnyJams,
I had the same problem and found a resolution on the Microsoft forum that was posted by one of their engineers. There were three 'methods' listed in the post; method 1, which basically scans your PC is the one that worked in my case. The scan found a corrupt file and fixed it. I've had no problems with updates since running the scan.

The link ishttp://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...c-b7d8a80e49f2

I hope this resolves your issue too.

Good luck.

I've been running windows 7 home premium 32 bit without problems for several years
I did a clean install of windows 7 home premium 64 bit from DVD
I activated it
SP1 (KB976932) appeared in the list of available updates so I ran Windows Update
When the updates were complete I checked the update history and SP1 (KB976932) was successful
However when I checked installed updates there was no mention of SP1 and the windows edition does not show SP1 either
There is no windows icon on the task bar to request the free upgrade to windows 10
I have repeated the clean install process 3 times with the same result. I also tried downloading SP1 from microsoft website but that got stuck in a boot loop
When I was running windows 7 32 bit the windows icon was available on the task bar to request the free upgrade to windows 10
I'm not that concerned about getting SP1 I just want to register for the free windows 10 upgrade
I'm running an Intel E6750 with 4gb ram on a gigabyte 965p-dq6 mobo. It's pretty old but I have a similar PC of the same vintage that ran win 7 64 bit without any problems before I upgraded it to windows 8 and I had no problems registering for the windows
10 upgrade on that PC
Any ideas?

I'm usually pretty savvy when it comes to de-virusing a computer, but this one has got me completely stumped.

I recently noticed a browser hijack where in all browsers, any result from yahoo.com is redirected to porn. Also, every update (anti-malware application download, update, or windows kb download, or windows update) will fail, sometimes with a DNS failure, sometimes with a 404 at all times.

I have tried to download

Ad-Aware (updates fail, returns 404)
AVG Antivirus (updates fail, dns times out)
Avira AntiVir (updates fail, returns 404)
Microsoft Windows Update fails to open (just redir's back to windows update)
Microsoft KB Downloads (Service Pack 3, various KB patches return 404)

Can anyone help identify this? I updates avira, and avg manually (via a cd from another computer) and they say the computer is clean. All Conficker scan tools say the computer is clean. Microsoft live onecare says the computer is clean.

I also add that I'm going to format & reinstall, but I would really like to know what I have (had) so that when I am trying to recover data from the old HDD I don't reinfect myself.

Thanks in advance. Any help would be much appreciated.

I have never posted on a forum before so apologies if I am doing this wrong. The problem started when I tried to plug in my (new) iphone to my Dell pc. The device was not detected so I tried to update my itunes software - update failed and I received a Windows 7 error. After searching through multiple forums and trying to download windows utility cleaner, etc - nothing has helped. Also, if I try to run the 'Check for Updates" link on my computer - if NEVER stops searching for updates and there for I cant update anything. Not sure where to start

Answer:Windows Check for updates keeps running-all installation/updates fail

Let's start with the easy stuff

To properly analyse and solve problems with Activation and Validation, we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool
(download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.
To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.
- **in your own thread**, please

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

When I'm using the PC Settings app (Update and recovery) it seems almost all my Windows Updates fail with error 80200011. However, if I go to the desktop Windows Update and do the update from there, it succeeds.

Stranger still, if I check the update history from within the Desktop Windows Update, it shows every attempt to update and shows them failing. If I check the Update History from within the Metro app, it says the last update performed was on December 15th.

I have a Surface Pro 2 and I know that I installed the Firmware update from Microsoft around December 13th, so that might be related. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Answer:Windows Updates fail from within Update App in Metro

hi, are you running windows 8.1 or windows 8? You may need to install pre-requisite updates through the windows 8 update software before you can use the metro update app. You could try and reinstall the operating system and see how that goes or if it still troubles you, contact the Microsoft helpdesk!

i tried to update my machine... i used windows update, it failed on 7 of the 8 critical updates. i tried it again, it happened again.

i'm guessing i have some kind of virus. that goodoo shit i had keeps popping up, and i dont know where it comes from, so i dont know how to get rid of it.

when i hit netstat -a... all the ports that say "listening" and would normally have the foreign address be the name of the computer you're on... they all say 00.goodoo.ru.
suggestions?

KB2586448

KB2572076

KB2564958

KB2567053

KB2579686

The error code I get is "800736B3". I ran MS FIXIT and it said they did not detect any problems.

Hello, have you tried:

Open the Windows Update troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Fix problems with Windows Update.

Its from this link: Windows Update error 800705b4

I know its a different error code but its worth a try.

I have had a problem with updates failing for a couple months. I have worked with both HP and Microsoft's Vista support teams to no avail. i have tried five or six different methods at the request of the HP and MS support teams to overcome this problem.

i consistently get messages that "Host Proces for Windows Services stopped working and was closed" and that windows will notify me if a solution is available.

the updates generate an error WindowsUpdate_800706BA.

Windows Update does not work, Windows Media Center updates do not work, and now the HP Printer updates no longer work. I'm kind of hanging open here without any of the security patches, OS fixes, and other updates.

any new suggestions would be welcomed!! My MS support guys just stopped responding to my replies about three weeks ago. i fear i'm at the end of his script!!

Hello,

I am looking for some help with Windows Update. I have 11 updates that fail every time I try to run them. Every month when Microsoft releases new updates, I will typically have at least one new update that fails and adds to my growing list of failures. I am on a Dell XPS8500 running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit SP1 on an Intel core i7-3770 @ 3.4GHZ processor.

I receive the Windows Update error 80073701 when the updates fail. I have attached a copy of the error along with the Windows Update history showing the 11 failed updates.

I followed the directions on this site and ran the SURT and SFC /Scannow, but afterwards, the updates still failed. The SFC scan completed without finding any integrity violations. As the CBS log was too large to upload to this forum site, I put it up on Dropbox. The link to the files is:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/d3c1fo8jc...K0hHNvDAa?dl=0

Any help with this issue would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Growing List of Updates That Fail When Running Windows Update

Ouch! - you have over 200 missing Winning Component Keys!
One or two I can deal with - but this number is beyond a manual fix.
I'm afraid that a repair install is going to be your best option unless you have a Restore point that goes back to before the problem started.

Answer:Windows Updates Fail / Cannot update from IE8 to IE9 / Vista Home Premium 32 bit

Hi John, welcome to VistaForums!

Sorry for the delay, it's been a busy week for me.

Let's see what's up here:

Export CBS folder
Click the Start button then click Computer. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder. Find and double click on the Logs folder. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

I had already installed, successfully I might add, a Definitions update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3115321). The Update already installed and now it keeps coming up with the same error unable to install update:
Definition Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB3115321) 32-Bit Edition - Error 0x80070643
I tried uninstalling the installed update and Windows won't do it returning an "Unspecified error" response. I have Windows 10 Home (32bit) installed and I cannot find a way to get Update, as you used to be able do, to HIDE the offending update. (THANKS Microsoft for removing functionality from Windows YET AGAIN).
I'm at my wits end with this. . I have asked about this problem before directly reporting the issue to Microsoft (Surprise surprise... NO RESPONSE. I'd get a better response from a brick wall). Seriously not happy; considering cutting my losses and reverting (AS I STILL HAVE MY INSTALL DISCS) to Windows 7 or moving to Linux. Way to go to p**s off users!

Hello,
I got infected on 20 April ( last auto-update date from Bitdefender IS 2009) with something really nasty ! What does:
- doesn't let me access any known antivirus WEB sites
- block updates of Bitdefender and your tools ( I had to update them manually )
- Windowsupdate redirected to fake Google page

Bitdefender complain a lot about infections with Trojan.Heur.VB.xxxxxx ( some random numbers ). Even scan with BD in Safe Mode didn't resolved anything !

Some details related to logs:
- SuperAntySpayware run for several hours and reported some infections, most of them cleaned
- after that I run BD in Safe Mode, over the night and removed some other infections ( log not attached here )
- then MAMB ! After installation, I couldn't run because BD was moving mbam.exe to quarantine ( infected with Trojan.Heur.VB.xxxxx). I had to install it on my notebook, rename the mbam.exe to mbam.bat, copy on CD-RW , copy on installation directory from infected PC and start it. Run first time, removed some infections, reboot then run again
- Combofix - couldn't run, with BD antivirus disabled . I had same approach - renamed to Combofix.bat and start. After small loading bar progress, BD just pop-up ( still disabled !! ) and after short time an error window pop-up ( see attached image )
- MGtool - see log - I had to disable BD to allow running

I hope you can give me a hint here !
Thanks !

Answer:DNS changer virus - fail to update antivirus or windows updates

Welcome to Major Geeks!

I can see the reason for your problems. Your logs show that your Windows Operating system files have become infected and there is no known reliable fix for this. In addition there are many many other infected files. We could spend a lot of time trying to remove this infection, but odds are that it will not work because the nature of the infection has so many executable system files infected that as soon as we fix one file, other files that are infected will almost immediately or upon the next reboot, just reinfect the files. In addition, your PC would still basically be unreliable/untrustworthy even if we manage to fix the infected files that we can see since there could be many more that we are not seeing.

The safest thing for you to do is backup your personal data immediately since your PC could possible become unbootable at any point in time. Do not back up any executable files. This includes programs that you have downloaded since any of them could be infected.

Once you backup, you need to delete all partitions, repartition, format partitions and reinstall Windows.

Try System Restore to before the problem began. This might force Updates to install correctly this time.

If not work through these steps:

System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

If these don't help check the System File integrity: SFC /SCANNOW Command

About a month ago, I used the built-in Windows 10 recovery method to reinstall Windows 10. I still had a few glitches from my original Windows 7 installation, and these have been resolved by the reinstall.

One thing I've noticed, however, is that I'm getting an error message whenever I try to install the definition update for Windows Defender:

Definitie-update voor Windows Defender - KB2267602 (definitie 1.215.1024.0) - Fout 0x80070643

I already tried sfc /scannow, and it didn't find anything that required fixing. I also tried MicrosoftFixit.msi and NetFxRepairTool.exe, because Googling the error message brought me the news that it was related to the .NET framework.

To be clear: I don't use Windows Defender right now. I got Norton Security installed and it serves me well. I know some people consider it a resource hog, but I've tried Avira as a recommendation by Tom's Guide and it was even worse. My Norton still lasts over 200 days so I have plenty of time if I want to replace it by then. However, I do want Windows to be fully updated, and not having that update finished just stands out like a red ship in a sea of white.

I've considered that this error might be because of Norton, but I didn't have issues before resetting Windows, so I don't see why it would be Norton that suddenly throws a fit about it.

How do I fix this?

I am on Windows 8 (original/classic x64 Pro), and since I have now installed all updates, I attempted turning off the Windows Update service, and then tested updating Windows Defender. Voila! It worked.

But if I keep my system in the configuration, will there be an issue running or updating Windows Defender (and would there be a functionality issue for Windows itself in the future)?

Hi, l've been having a constant issue with my computer and I can't seem to get out of this trouble no matter how many times I reinstall and even wipe out my hard drive.

I wiped out everything in my hard drive and installed windows 7 Ultimate for the '7th' time, and the same problems happen every single time.

Right after the install, it seems to work fine but as I install numerous windows updates as it recommended (almost forced me to, 'cause it does automatically), my computer becomes so slow in everything.

It doesn't start up, the menu and such looks as if I'm in a safe mode (blocky and old looking) even if I manage to start it up, have to wait more than 15min or even 1hr for it to respond.

The situation I'm having now is, the pop up message saying:
"Failed to connect to a windows service: windows couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service. This prevents standard user from logging on to the system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond"

Also, the computer has been failing at installing several updates such as:
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5.1 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 for x64-based Systems
Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2763523)(KB2719857)(KB2735855)(KB2750841)(KB2732059)

Because of that, it sometimes ran chkdsk on the boot screen and deleted/fixed files.

I don't think it's ... Read more

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

I have two Windows 7 64 bit systems that worked perfectly until approx two weeks ago. They started becoming unresponsive to various websites, such as b1015.com (unable to listen live). Both computers then started having problems opening sites through google searches.

Following this, most updates on both computers fail. Downloads from the internet fail. Updating flash on one - failed. downloading .net framework update - failed.

One computer has MSE - updated and ran scan - no threats found
One computer has AVast - updated and ran scan - no threats found

Tried to download malwarebytes on the computer with avast - failed
went to XP station - downloaded to thumb drive and installed from thumb drive and ran  - no threats found

from cmd prompt -  ran sfc /scannow on both computers  -  no problems found

Can anyone give me any ideas of where to go from here to get both of these computers working properly again

My windows updater asks me to update and I agree. Then time after time it tells me I failed.

I had a surprise when looking at my updates that all 32 bit ones fail and all 64 bit updates succeed. That seems to be the pattern. I provide attachments. I note many important updates fail and that worries me.

I ran the fix it troubleshooter.
Any ideas on resolving the update problem?

Answer:64 bit updates succeed 32 bit updates fail

Hello and welcome robaa mate I don't know why you are getting the 32bit stuff someone cleverer than me might know.

But a little tip I learnt yesrday is to download smaller batches of updates - when they come up untick them all (top box) and then tick a batch at a times and you might need to get the readiness tool

Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [November 2012] from Official Microsoft Download Center

Ah I see most of it is Office stuff - oops - still the same thing goes I just did a Vista a machine with the same problem - Office updates.

In your PC settings, try setting Windows update to anything except "Automatic". However, with this setting change, you would need to regularly check for updates to ensure that your PC is up-to-date with regards to security.

Windows Vista updates have failed to run for a number of months now.
The svchost.exe (Host process for Windows Services) just sits there and hogs a whole core and occasionally the "Windows Update" screen shows error  "C80001FE". Occasionally I see a TrustedInstaller.exe  (from C:\window\servicing)

I have an update issue driving me batty.

SP1 and IE neither will install. Machine is malware free, other updates worked fine. Error of course is generic. Here is what I have tried so far.

1. sfc /scannow (found nothing)
2. temp files cleaned
3. windows repair AIO by tweaking.com
4. Several MS Fixit related to WU
5. Windows Update Troubleshooter
6. reset all windows update comps.
7. Created new user account and attempted from there
8. safe mode install
9. clean boot install
10. disabled/removed AV

The error that sp1 pops is ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING (80073701)
IE9 install Error code is 800F081E

We are a small tech firm with some really sharp folks..........We have tried everything in the known Universe to make these 6 new refurb IBM ThinkCenter M series boxes to accept all the usual hundreds of updates after a W7 Sp1 build and all the basic setup stuff.  No weird software just that ole pesky Microsoft updates fail.  You might get a few here or there but even try to stop a few and just load some but no go. Its the usual round of stuff that comes in after W7 SP 1.  You get about 100 or so they install.  Reboot and wait a while then around another hundred......then the usual rebboot.  Then during the next few days as you build out a system you get a few more here and there.  But we do this all the time and usually get buy with Tweaking.com or the MS Fix it.  I have renamed the Downloads, the Datastore.edb, delete temps and on and on. There has to be some reg key or the ultimate update repair tool out there somewhere or the MS refurb on all six boxes loaded some service or dll that is corrupt. HELP!!!  Our client thinks we are nuts, I think the outfit he got the boxes from loaded with some ISO that maybe should have been an original ThinkCentre M series install disc.  When you talk IBM think inside the box. "The Good Guys...Cyber Crooks Beware" Please advise clients to always report any of those bogus "Microsoft support phone calls" to the www.IC3.gov and urge them to complain if they have a... I have had several updates fail in the last few days and last night I got a screen blue screen that was much different than any BSOD that I have had in the past so am not sure if it represents the same thing as past BSOD. It was simply a blue screen with a frown and a message REFERENCE_BY_POINTER. I rebooted the computer and decided to try installing the failed updates one at a time and the first one I tried gave an error code 8007371b.

I did a search and found the following thread which seemed to be the same issues as I was having. I ran the first DISM scan and it gave the same error as the original poster so I ran the second command and again got the same message as he did.

I also checked the services and my Windows Module Installer is set to automatic rather than manual as was shown in the other thread but not sure if this would be causing the issues. I didn't follow any more of the instructions as I see at least one of the people providing advice is now banned but not sure why. I would suspect it was not for inappropriate advice but thought I would post and ask before continuing on with the recommendations in that thread.

I have edited the post and attached a screen capture that resulted from the DISM and SFC.

I also noted at the bottom of the original post there is a "Tip" with a link to reviversoft but am not sure if that was something provided by someone at eightforums or is an external ad as it appears to be part of the post and not below the line where... Read more

Windows 7 Updates fail
I have tried all the suggested "FIXES"
But nothing works
Can anyone help please ?

Answer:windows 7 updates fail

Are you getting an error message? If so, what. Have you tried installing the updates manually? Sometimes it is just one update not installing properly that prevents the others. Many threads I have read indicate that there is a particular problem with KB2647753 and after manual installation of that all of the others installed correctly.
I assume that you have tried the windows update troubleshooter?
start - control panel - in search box type troubleshooter - then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security click Fix problems with Windows update.

The response is that "access is denied."  I am running

I just noticed a couple months ago that updates never load on my laptop. I tried to update to 8.1, no dice. Now I'm getting messages from Microsoft telling me I am eligible to get Windows 10 free, but haven't updated to 8.1 yet.

I have a Toshiba Satellite S955-S5373

I had to turn off automatic updates because the Memory usage was very high and the Disk Usage was constantly at 99 or 100%.

Help!

Thanks,

JP

Answer:Windows Updates always fail

The last time I saw this issue I had to do the 8.1 update manually by downloading it outside of Windows update. Then I had to use the update repair tool to resolve any other issues. Once all of that was done I was able to install new updates through Windows update.

Answer:windows updates fail

Hello,
There is a site called:

Windows Update Troubleshooter. You might like to look at it for interest.

I also found this page in the Windows Knowledge Base.

http://support.microsoft.com/search...=1033&query=failure+to+update+Windows&x=0&y=0

Hope you can access the first page mentioned. I can't, but I'm not using Internet Explorer, though I wouldn't have thought that would make a difference.

Also, certain software interfers with updating.

See:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;241234

You will see that you may need to disable certain programs to allow Windows Update to operate.

I am sure someone else with be along to help you.

Bye,

When I update my computer or when it does it automatically, the Definition Update for Windows Defender always comes back as failed. why is that? and do i need it if i have AVG and ZoneAlarm?

Answer:Windows Defender Update Fail

I would get rid of both AVG and ZoneAlarm, and install Microsoft Security Essentials. It will disable Windows Defender when you install it. It does a great job of anti-virus and anti-spyware, and you don't need a separate firewall if the Windows one is turned on.

Hello:

I am having a very annoying issue where updates install successfully (verified in the update history), and then reappear for installation immediately after they are installed if you check for updates again. They also will show in the update history as having been installed multiple times if you try more than once (exact same KB#).

So far I have tried this:
CLFS transaction logs - Reset

I have tried the numerous suggestions clearing up the Software Distribution Folder and Catroot2.

I have run every MS fixit tool under the sun.

I have completely obliterated .NET from my machine, using all MS tools to remove, clean, repair, and reinstall each .NET package in proper order according to Technet.

I have used fixit tools to repair Windows Update, including properly stopping Cryptographic services, BITS, and WU services.

I have run CHKDSK and SFC.

I have used System restore.

I have tried to manually install updates in safe mode.

I have tried Windows repair.

I can hide the updates and they seem not to show again, but the moment more updates become available, I have to do it again. This means EVERY update that appears, I have to install, then check, then hide again.

I have a lot of stuff on here which would take a week or more to go through and redo if I have to reinstall Windows.

If I have left anything out here, it is likely I have tried it.

I only have a few patches of hair left that I have not yet pulled out.

Most of the MS boards have all the same suggestion... Read more

KB4020102 was updated successfully on 26/5/2017. I usually have metered wifi. Today I connected to ethernet. Same KB is trying again and again. Now it hangs. Please see pics below.

What to do now?

Answer:Successful updates retries and fails

Notes on this update (as with all) in News:
Cumulative Update KB4020102 Windows 10 v1703 Build 15063.332 - Windows 10 Forums

- no reference to a repetition, although certain updates (which have themselves been updated) are known to be repeated.

What should you do now?
One possibility might be to download it (link in the above) and manually install (begging the question as to why twice).

2. Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, server 2008, server 2008 R2 for 64 (KB2600217)

3. Definition update for Windows Defender- KB915597 (Definition 1.139.0.0)

Answer:Win 7-repeated successful install of same updates

Hi yahar.

There is an older thread on this forum where a new member had similar problems and found a fix (at least for one of those)
You may want to check it out and try that solution. It seemed to fix the problem for him.

Update repeating with each shutdown

Otherwise, if you are able to confirm they have installed correctly then maybe the other suggestion posted there may be an option.

Hope that helps.

Last year I had a security update for Visual Studio 2005 Professional fail to install. I tried to find a solultion, but did not spend much time on it and just dropped it. A recent update for XP which is supposedly criticle (I think there two of them).

I am a little embarrassed : to not being able to find the solution to this problem, being a developer and an old computer hack.

The following are the exact updates:

Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
(I had a problem with this one too but was not as ready to solve it because I wasn't using this Db at the time)
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB955706)
------
Security Update for Windows XP (KB959426)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB961373)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB963027)

I would like to at least get the security updates to work first as a prioriy. Especially, if they each have separate issues/solutions.

Let me know if I need to go to a solution online.

Hi all,

On more than 1 occassion I have been offered an update immediately after I had successfully installed it (as confirmed in update history). I would venture to say that in about 50% of the times the update is no longer offered a second time after I reboot(whether or not instructed to by Vista). However, that still leaves me with plenty of occassions where I have to install the same update 2 or 3 times to be sure "it took" and the fact that this happens at all lol

Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer:Updates keep getting offered after successful installs

Hello Viviand,

Welcome to the Vista Forums.

Next time that happens, instead of downloading and installing the updates again, try clicking on the check for updates button on the left of WU. See if this updates WU or still finds that you need the updates.

Hello,

I've been having an issue with installing updates for a long time now, but it was only one update that was failing, and I wasn't able to find a fix for the specific one anywhere on the web. I decided to check again to make sure others have updated, but almost EVERY update that has been given to me has failed, aside from the occasional one that does work.
I have attached three images. Two images are of one particular update that, in the past, has never been able to install. It's been failing to install since the day after I built this computer (Dec, 25, 2013)

The other image shows all failed updates in the past two days. Windows tells me I have 16 important updates, but it can't even get passed "Preparing to install". I waited about an hour, and it was still preparing, so I canceled.
If anyone has any idea whatsoever of what I could do to make these updates finally go through, it would be much appreciate. My computer has attempted to update probably almost every night since I got it (nearly 2 years ago). I want it to finally stop.

Thanks

I have an old gateway computer I am trying to bring back to life so that I can use it for school. The first thing I did after I got it running was tried to install the windows updates. So far nothing Ive done has got it to work. The express option kept giving me the windows validation tool update that would download but failed to install. I then went online and validated it manually. After that the Express option gave me the Windows XP Service Pack 3 update which would also download but failed to install. I then had to manually download and install this update as well. I thought that would help but any and all updates attempted by Windows Update are still failing to install. When I go to the troubleshoot link it tells me to click "Review Your Update History" to find out how to solve the problem. When I go there the updates all say they were installed with a green check mark. Im not sure how to fix this or whats wrong I thought at first it could be some kind of virus, spyware, or malware so Ive ran ESET NOD32 Antivirus, SUPERAntiSpyware, and Malwarebytes' scans and found a lot of infections that were successfully cleaned by all 3 programs. The only thing that seemed might have been connected to this problem was a few particular infections I noticed in the MBAM log. I couldnt seen to find the Windows Update Error Codes on my windows update, it's always green (after trying to install the updates but doesnt) or orange ("install your selected updates"), both which does not view the error codes. One update has not been successful so it cannot view the error codes at the moment.
Had to remove about 3 CAB files to make the file size smaller.

Hello all,

I run into a problem that needs some expert help, being unable to solve it by myself.
My windows 7 (64bits) show that there are 10 important updates ready to be installed.
They are essentially security updates for various components of Office 2007.
When I give the OK to update windows update run the update process then shows update install fails for all of them.
There are errors Code 52F, 89B and 643.
When I try to resolve the problem by running Fix It from Windows update help, it cannot run either, displaying error 0x80004005.
When I search this error it takes me to a window that is related to residential group sharing?

Hi there,
A couple weeks back I tried to connect my son's new Ipod touch to the PC. I encountered error after error, so I thought that maybe I needed to be sure my computer had all it's updates. There were 3 critical updates that failed when I tried to install them.

My system is Windows XP
Home Edition
Version 2002
Service pack 3

My automatic updates is on but the history shows nothing prior to Feb 26 (the day I tried to run updates).

These are the updates that failed to install:
Update Rollup for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB960715)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB961260)
Update for Windows XP (KB967715)

With the same error code: 0x8007F0DA

The only one that has installed in the past couple of weeks is:
Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB960353)

I've tried to do a couple of suggestions on the support pages but I fear that they don't all apply to me. I don't want to mess it up more than it already is.

I'm not sure if this is relavent or not but, I had installed Windows Onecare months ago. About 2 months ago I had ended up taking my PC to a computer repair shop (I had a broken fan) and they uninstalled Onecare. After that I would frequently receive errors related to Onecare (according to Google - service excutable).

I figure that the first step to getting my computer back on track (and eventually my son's Ipod working) is to have all it's updates installed.

If anyone could walk me thro... Read more

I've got a multitude of issues really. It's getting to crunch time in Uni in terms of papers/projects etc and I really didn't need this. I upgraded (not a clean install) to Windows 7 about a month ago and it's been working very well. That said, there was a problem restarting last time my laptop installed the Windows 7 automatic updates - it wouldn't startup (would just flash a blue screen after the splash then restart) and went to startup repair. I had to do a system restore to a few days before and then everything was fine.

I rarely turn off my PC so maybe this has caused a problem, but this time after the update during the night while I was asleep, the same problem arised, except none of the restore points worked, even as far back as the 16th of February. I've tried to open it into safe mode but it stops on windows\system32\drivers\disk.sys, flashes the BSoD (a very quick flash) then restarts.

Just to clarify I can load the system recovery options (command prompt, system restore etc) but nothing beyond that really and I'm at a loss as to what to do.

I've burned Ubuntu and the Windows 7 recovery discs from another laptop if that's of any relevance.

It's a Sony Vaio VGN-NR38E and the specs are:
2gb RAM
1.86GHz Dual core
160gb
Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit

Please could someone help me out, I've never had a problem this big (isit big?) with a PC before.

So I recently downloaded a bunch of updates, but for some reason a few security updates fail everytime I try to install them. Ive tried many times but it simply wont let me get them.
Its probably not a big deal that im not getting whatever they are, but its annoying to have windows always telling me I have new updates to install. Any ideas?

Im running Windows XP Home Edition with SP3 on a HP a1730n.

Answer:[SOLVED] certain windows updates fail

Which updates?

Recovered 5342 Laptop 2 days ago. When I hit update and restart it attempts to install 238 updates (for 1-1/4 hours), then while installing it gives a failure error and uninstalls all it has done (another 45 minutes)
Help, just want to upgrade to windows 10. Do I need to do the updates first?

Answer:Windows 8 re-install, 238 updates fail

Yes, you will need to do all the updates in Windows 8/8.1 prior to upgrading to Windows 10. You also may want to click the link below and choose your computer from the list. Once on the site for your computers Drivers choose the OS (windows 10) and download all the win 10 drivers for the computers hardware. You could download them on your computer and copy to a usb key or burn to a disc. That way when you upgrade to windows 10 you have the drivers on a disk to install.

Answer:windows 10 updates fail flashplayer for ie

It is failing on mine too. What I find interesting is that Windows 10 comes with IE 11 and this update is for IE 10.

Basically im using my old celeron pc at the moment while my AMD rig is offline and to cut a long story short i screwed up the HDD on the old pc which meant i had to use the recovery cd's to reset the windows install to how it left the factory..............5-6 years ago so obviously service pack one was installed so i had to install like 160updates altogether not including service pack 2, but anyway after installing service pack 2 and restarting i checked for updates one last time and it came up with 2-3 but they just wont install, ive tried rebooting the pc loads of times, tried booting into safe mode with networking but my modem didnt work in that mode for some reason so i couldnt try that.

Anyway heres which ones wont install
im fairly confident that by not installing the above wont cause me any problems its just the fact that i keep getting prompted that theres updates and if i turn updates off i get that other message saying my pc might be at risk so i cant win really! i just want these installed

Dell 530swindows XP sp2Internet explorer 7My computer is very new, less than a month old and when I go to Windows Update, the newest update is SP3. It downloaded fine, but when I try to install it, 2 or 3 seconds and it says that the installation has "failed"My PC came with XP sp2 and I had already installed sp3, but I downloaded a photo editing software and as best as anyone could tell, it corrupted something to the point where windows would not even begin to startup, couldn't even start in safe mode.  It ended up that we used the XP disc that came with the computer and reloaded windows.  Everything seemed ok except the failed updates.

Answer:windows updates won't install (fail)

UPDATE:about 10:30 last night while using my computer, the power in the house flashed off, no storm or anything, just seemed like a normal flash and everything in the house reset.  when my computer (always plugged into a standard surge protector strip) started rebooting, it went the DELL bios version screen and stopped with a cursor in the top left corner- nothing else.  I went in thru the boot menu and was able to boot manually.  not sure if all problems are related but driving me nuts!!

Well I had 6 recommended updates today for Vista. It says it installed 3 and failed to install the other 3. The three updates that failed were:

1.Security Update for Windows Vista(KB941644)
2.Updates for Windows Mail Junk EMail Filter (January 2008)
3. Update for Windows Vista(KB943302)

It gave me the Error: 80070BC9

Answer:Windows Vista Updates fail

I get the same error message, but me it's even worse... a whole bunch of updates fail to install. Any help, please?
I have Windows Vista Home Premium. I doubt there is any malware or virus as it's a fresh Vista install and I even ran a SpyEraser scan and a BitDefender Anti-Virus scane which returned nothing wrong.
I thought I found a fix suggesting to enter the following command in "cmd": "reg delete HKLM\Components /v AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving" but windows says it can't find "AdvancedInstallersNeedResolving".
Thanks in advance.

For information only. I've noticed that twice a day windows 10 update is failing. Think I read that this was just for testing purposes.

Answer:Twice daily Windows 10 updates fail

Found
c:\$Windows~BT which looks like it is my W10 upgrade, it's 6+Gig.
Digging into ...\Driver\DU I found this in the a config file:
"ImageInfo=Client|Core|10.0.10240.16384.0|9|en-GB"
Most of the files in the main folder are date late July early August. I looks like an ISO.
Are MS giving it to me a bit at a time?

Hi Please move if not the proper forum! Here are things to try if you're having problems with Windows 10 updates. These are some things that have worked for me.
The first thing I would do is a sfc /scannow and DISM How to Repair Corrupted Windows System Files with the SFC and DISM Commands Even if the SFC command doesn’t repair any files, running it will confirm that no system files are corrupted and you can continue to troubleshoot your system with other methods.
Next I would try to reset Windows updates. Here is a easy link from Shawn Brink that will get that done for you with a .bat file! Windows Update - Reset in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums Sometimes you may have an issue with Windows Update such as not being able to download or install updates, error messages, not being able to search for new updates, etc. These kind of issues can occur when the Windows Update database or components are corrupted, one or more services related to Windows Update are not running, etc. Resetting the Windows Update components and history can usually solve these types of issues.
If you don't want to do a clean install or a reset, I suggest a in-place upgrade repair! How to repair Windows 10 with in-place upgrade. - wintips.org - Windows Tips & How-tos The repair of Windows 10, can resolve many problems in Windows 10 functionality and some times is the most reliable and quickest way to fix the Windows 10 malfunctions. As the title says, my update are not being installed for some reason. I tried multiple times. I even tried doing in it from the Windows Update site, didn't work either.

As a note, I recently had my windows reinstalled.

Any ideas of what the problem could be?

Answer:Windows Updates Fail To Install

There are a couple of possibilities, but lets start with BITS.
It is possible that BITS(Background Intelligence Transfer service) is not running. Check to see if it is running. If it has stopped running then restart in the following manner.
Start > control panel > Performance and Maintenance > Administrative tools > services. When the services window opens Look to see i f BITS Is running. If not click "restart the service".

If this doesn't work post a reply and lets try another solution.

I run Win 7 Home Premium with IE9.I am informed that there are 13 Windows updates to install but repeatedly get the message that installation has failed with Error Number 80246008.
I have researched this error and downloaded a program called Error End.However, running this program reveals several hundred errors which I do not believe so uninstalled it.
I would appreciate any help available to solve this very frustrating problem.

Answer:Windows Updates fail to install

This is the first time I've heard of Error End but a quick search reveals it to be a poor piece of software so I suggest you don't buy it and dump it.
In an attempt to fix your problem, I suggest you read this link and follow the advice given.
If you still have problems post back and we'll try to help further.
