Cannot Create PIN After Deleting Contents of Ngc folder

Question: Cannot Create PIN After Deleting Contents of Ngc folder

My pin stopped working after Windows 10 did an update. I followed instructions read elsewhere to delete contents of my Ngc folder. I went to my account setting to create a pin. It asked me for my password to log in. I entered it and then nothing happened.

Now when I go back to sign-in options for my account and I click create pin the system works for a second and then stops and nothing happens. This is after a fresh reboot. If I try to enter the sign-in options a second time without rebooting the page does not load at all.

Thank you in advance for your help

Preferred Solution: Cannot Create PIN After Deleting Contents of Ngc folder

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First and Long!

(First time poster - long time lurker)

I was getting the "hal.dll corrupt" message every time I attempted to start in Safe Mode and after reading a number of posts decided to recover my system to fix it.

It was a success and everything is running fine. On my C: drive I now have a folder "My Back Up 07-10-21) that is 35.8 GB and contains the entire file structure (including files) of my system PRE-Recovery. After a full virus scan I went through and moved any files I needed out of this folder.

This is where I run into problems ... As far as I know I no longer need the "My Back Up" folder or any of it's contents BUT every time I try to delete it I get "Cannot delete BOOKS: Access Denied" error message . I have even tried to uncheck the "READ ONLY" box under properties and that just gives me a bunch of "Access Denied" alerts for various files .

This folder is 35.8 GB and I would love to get that space back ... any solutions? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

So I'm wondering how I would have a vbs file that when run would:

Delete the contents of a specific folder
Download a specific zip file (to a temp location)
Extract this zip file to a specific permenant location
Give an "Installation Complete!" popup.

So far I've found this to do step 1:

Code:
Dim FSO, D, F
Set FSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set D = FSO.GetFolder("my/path/here")
For Each F In D.Files
FSO.DeleteFile F.path, True
Next
Does anyone know where I could find the script to do the other things, and put it all into one vbs that runs them in order?

Answer:Deleting Contents of a Folder, and Downloading and Extracting a Zip in VBS

It's probably feasible. I need some more information to suggest a possible solution.
- What protocol is used for downloading? http, ftp, ...
- Would you like to extract the zip file by vbs only or is there a program (7-Zip, WinRAR, ...) which should do that?
- What Windows version(s) are you working with?
- Is there a subfolder structure inside the zip file?

Hi I am Rupesh from India and I have downloaded huge mp3 files from internet and I want to create a database of these files.

Recently I have seen a website which contains some important lectures and decided to download the site. Actually the website consists of up to 60000 mp3 files and in that I need 13000 files and all the files I need are contained in a separate directory I mean with in a web page and it's sub web pages. I have downloaded what I need ie., 11000 mp3 files of size 185 gb using offline browser called extreme picture finder and remaining 2000 files are not downloaded. The extreme picture finder downloaded these files fastly and accurately but for remaining 2000 files it is taking lot of time and so I have stopped the program. I want to download remaining 2000 files manually I mean not through any offline browser.

The website from which I have downloaded mp3 file's is very nicely organized. The website administrators arranged webpages nicely I mean suppose if we examine a webpage they have specified that all the sub pages under that webpage consists of say 50 directories and 1000 files etc.,. I want to create a database file similar to the above.

The extreme picture finder application in Windows downloaded the files to the folder e:/downloads/ with exact file system structure as source website. Is there any possibility to create a database of all the folders and files which are under this folder. I think that we can create a ms access database so t... Read more

Make a folder on your hard drive, like My Documents\HJT
Download Hijackthis.
Unzip the file to the folder on your hard drive.

Double click on Hijackthis.exe then click on the "Scan" button, then click on "Save Log".

Copy and paste it back here and someone will be happy to review it.

Don't make any changes until instructed to do so.

Hello, first I want to apologize up front if this topic has already been posted with the problem resolution as well. I have searched throughout the networking and sharing threads but was unable to find what I'm looking for...

I have two computers in my home, a Tower PC and a Laptop both running Windows 7 Home Prem 64bit. Both computers use the same usernames and passwords to log-in to each respective computer locally.
Both PC's are in the same HomeGroup using the same HomeGroup password.

I'm attempting to access the user folder on my laptop remotely from my Desktop. I'm sharing the user folder on the laptop and the permissions are as follows:
Username: Owner
HomeGroup: Read/Write
Everyone: Read/Write --->recently added 'Everyone' in the hope that I'd be able to change the contents of the remote user folder from the desktop... In this case, I'm attempting to rename a folder within the remote user directory..

--When I go to rename the folder within the remote user's folder/directory, I get the following error:

-You need permission to perform this action.
-You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder
--Try Again or Cancel buttons are my only choices.

So why is it that I've given read/write permission (on the laptop end) to my user folder for 'HomeGroup' and 'Everyone" but am still unable to remotely rename a folder within that shared folder? I appreciate any help or suggestions you may have to help me through this. Again, I'm... Read more

When I go to clean out my temp folders in Safe Mode I usually do so having opted to show hidden files and folders including those of the operating system. I often come across "index.dat" and "desktop.ini." files in "Temp" sub-folders like "Content.IE5". As they belong to a temp folder is it safe to delete them eventhough Windows warns us that these are system files that if deleted might affect any programs they might have served.

Answer:Deleting contents of temp folders

If you want to be cleaning out temp files and folders download ccleaner from http://www.piriform.com but only use it as a file cleaner don't use it as a registry cleaner, as registry cleaners are not very reliable, but as for file cleaners this is the best one out there !

I'm dowloading some roms (I have around 2k). THey came zipped up, so I unzipped them, but I now have 2k folders, when the program I'm using to run the roms needs them the files all in the same folder. I would rather not spend a few hours opening a folder, dragging the file into a different folder, then repeating that process 2k times.

Is there any easy way to get the files into one folder, and leave the empty folders behind.

I'm running Vista, btw.

Answer:Is there any easy way to move the contents of a folder, but leave the folder

The easiest way involves going back a step. Use something like WinZip and choose the option to "extract to here". Then, everything you extract will be in the same folder. I'm making an assumption here, that you are using the built-in zip utility. That's fine in a pinch, but if you are working with that many files, you need a full-fledged app.

I recently created a data c.d. with over 100 files on it .Would anyone know how I could create a List of Contents? I have tried copy function in "detail view" and this works, but I can't paste contents into Excel, "new letter", Microsoft Word , Notepad, Word pad. I was successful in doing a print screen ,this would require several prints.
The CD is a 700MB CD-RW and I used Adaptec software , the "add contents" to cover did not work. (I doubt you could read 100+ lines) . Ideally 1 full sheet of paper that I could fold and place inside, would be o.k .

How does one display the full contents of a folder and all its subfolders in Vista?

In XP all one had to do was right-click on a folder, select Search and press Enter (typing nothing in the search box) and it would display everything in a folder and all contained subfolders.

It's frustrating as I have to use my netbook with XP when I want to search through my external hard drive rather than my spanking new Vista laptop!

Hi,

I am using Word 2010.

I have a really long Word document with different topics.

I would like to create a Table of content at the top of that document so that I can click on that topic & it will take me directly to that topic without me trying to scroll down the whole document to find that topic. ( Just like a book in Word Format with table of content & clicking the topic to go directly to that topic without going thru the whole book page by page )

I tried to create a hyperlink for each topic but Word created the hyperlink at the same place where the topic was listed, so that doesn't help.

I also tried to copy & paste that hyperlink at the top of the document but that didn't work either.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks

I have a drive at work that is shared by many people. Within it are many folders to organize all the files. At times it is difficult to locate certain files; even using Explorer search becuase the file name may not be known.

What I would like to do is have a "table of contents" document or program to open that displays all the files, showing their folder location, and a link to that file.

I was able to do this somewhat in Excel but with 3,000+ files, doing so manually would be painstakingly difficult and time consuming.

It would be perfect if it was updated automatically, as these files change on a daily basis; adding new files and deleting old ones.

Is this possible? What would be the best program for it? Access?

I have a number of technical documents that are currently unwieldy to find things in. One solution is to have the network drive indexed, but getting that working for a host of people in different locations could be difficult.

I was instead going to create a master index that pulls just the contents from each of the separate documents into one; obviously less functional than searching the entire documents but it should still do the job of allowing people to find important releases.

I can do this manually, and have done, but then the formatting is rubbish and there is no way to alter every line across all 80 pages at once.

Is there a better way of combining the contents pages, and if not then is there a good way of formatting quickly?

I'm thinking of making a python script to do it but if there's another way to do it I'd like to know. Master documents don't seem to do what I want?

Answer:Create a master index from the contents pages of several documents

Have you considered a Help Authoring Tool such as RoboHelp or MadCap?

Create a project with each document as a chapter, then index the entire project.

Just a thought.

I was sorting through some pictures and organizing them into folders about an hour ago then all of a sudden the folder just goes blank after I recieved some kind of error for one of the pictures. When i type the names of the sub folders which were inside of the folder that dissapeared into the address bar, the pictures and the folders citing there location still in the same spot appear with no problem, but when i try to search the system nothing shows up. The memory is just as much as it was before the incident, so i know for a fact the files are not gone, but when i look at details for the folder it says 0 for everything. Another thing is if i attempt to create a new folder in the empty one, when i hit refresh or leave and come back the new folder (which appears as New Folder (2) even though there isnt a 1) is gone. Can anyone tell how i would go about fixing this problem?

Answer:Folder Contents Gone!!!

When you were organizing things around did you move those files somewhere else making this folder (blank) empty?  Did you check garbage can to make sure you didnt delete the files?  Also go into start / documents/ and see if any of those files are in there and if so place your mouse over until you see the location of the file.

Hello Guys,

I got a problem with my Windows Xp; I can?t hide the contents of my system32 folder (System Tasks are not coming). The contents of system32 folder are hidden (by default). And Windows hides the System drive (which is containing windows) and the following folders (which are system folders):-

WINDOWS
System32 &
Program Files.

My problem is this, I can hide the rest of the folders (windows and program files) and the system drive but I can?t hide the system32 folder.
(Almost 5 - 6 days before I was able to hide the system 32 folder too by the option coming in the system tasks of ?Hide the contents of this folder?)
Now as I define the system tasks...System tasks comes in system folders, also system tasks comes in my computer if you note. If there is nothing coming on the left side when you open any folder in Windows Explorer or My computer then that option will be enabled by going to Control Panel >> Folder Options >> General >> Mark Show common tasks in folders.

Now moving on to my issue?.System tasks are not coming on the taskbar, instead of it, Picture tasks are coming (view as a slide show, order prints online, print pictures...)
I do not know how it happened but I noticed this problem a couple of days before.

Recently I have been part of a virus removal team, specifically the w32/blaster worm. The primary tool we have been using is McAfee 7.0. Normally it moves the svchost.exe in the winnt\system32\wins folder to c:\quarantine. A simple delete of this file does not work and requires scanning the svchost.exe.vir file and then deleting using McAfee. Is this an ownership issue? and... is the file still locked into the operating system? I have understood it is recommended to delete this file. Who actually owns/controls this file? Can anyone explain what effect/significance of the existence of this file in the quarantine folder could be to the OS/network? My understanding of quarantine is that the file is simply being preserved so it can be recovered in the event it has important data. I havn't been able to find any documentation or specifications that say otherwise. I would happily be enlightened.
Thanks!

Edit: Looks like ALL of my folders in my computer are empty, or showing AS empty. However, I CAN find the files if I search for them individually, but my desktop is blank, and any folder I open is empty...

PLEASE HELP

Answer:All folder contents lost?

OH LORD, I'm as daft as they were clever... "They" being whoever created the virus I got rid of... Made all of my files and folders to be set as Hidden. Fixed the problem myself with your helpful guide found here:

I have the strangest thing that no one seems to be able to solve.
If the contents of my folder are greater than able to display, a scroll bar shows up.
Perfect so far.

If I scroll down to the bottom if the list and double click, right click to open etc,
the contents will jump to the top.

In case I am not clear, I have posted a video on youtube.

I want to upgrade to Windows 10, but I want my OS to be working properly first.
I don't want to re-install, but if all else fails...

I have a slave drive (E drive for me) where I store all of my non system folders and files. Photos, doc, etc. While looking for something the other day I noticed that one of the folders that I regularly use was not accessible. It is a folder directly off the root directory. There are MANY other 'same type' folders in this root directory that seem unaffected. And while checking, I found a couple other folders that are also not accessible.
I have a lot of data potentially at risk here and I am VERY worried that it may not be recoverable. When I click on one of these problem folders, after a long pause, a message pops up asking me about formatting this drive. Of course I click no.
I right clicked on the drive letter, properties and selected check disk for errors, this prompted me to reboot so CHKDSK could work at startup.
While that was going I saw on the screen "File record segment xxxxx is unreadable"
Then "deleting an index entry from index $0 of file 25"
Wondering if there's anything else I can do to recover this section of the drive that may be in trouble. Why would one folder be fine and the next one in the list be corrupt. and then the next 5 be fine and then one not? Very strange - happened overnight too - one day working one day not. And no other changes were made to the system. The only thing I've done on this system lately is to dump photos from a digital camera onto another drive.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, I hope someone can answer this question.

I have an extensive MIDI file collection saved to my desktop and want to print the contents of the folder. When I open the folder, it shows the contents IE "misty.mid" but there is no option to print. I have tried contrl. P and also tried to take a screen shot, nothing works. Any suggestions? I hate the idea of having to hand print this whole thing since I have over 1,000 MIDI files. I need to know what is in the folder, on paper, instead of just opening and looking on the computer.
Thanks In Advance!!!!

Hi to all you WLM experts out there ... with apologies if this question has been asked before.

Can anyone pls suggest a method for analysing the e-mails in a WLM folder ... eg by author, by date ...

I?ve a large folder containing approx 2000 e-mails from approx 20 colleagues ... I?d like to be able to count how many from each! And how many per day, etc ...

This would be possible by eg exporting to CSV file for analysis in eg Excel... But how to do? Or is there a better way? (PS ? I'm using WLM 2011. And I don?t have Outlook.)

Suggestions pls.

Thanks in anticipation.

GBB

Answer:Analysis of WLM folder contents

Display the folder within WLM (e.g. as Inbox or a subfolder of Inbox either in the Storage group or under one of the email accounts set up in WLM). Make sure there is a column shown called "From". Click on the word "From" at the top of the column to sort by name. You can count them there or move them in groups to new folders (one for each unique "From" field). In the latter case, the number of emails in each folder should display at the bottom of the main window called the "status" bar (one of the view options).

Hello,
I need some help. I am now running windows 8.1 on my new Dell system. I used windows <g class="gr_ gr_95 gr-alert gr_spell gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" data-gr-id="95" id="95">xp</g> for
over ten years on my old Dell desktop. On my hold system, A knowledgeable friend added a mod to the registry that added a 'print directory' to the drop down options when you right-clicked on a folder name. I collect music tracks and have over 3000
tracks. My problem is that when I try to compare folders to check for duplicate tracks, it's very difficult to do this using on-screen listings. I would print them out and then manually mark off any duplicates. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to do this
using windows 8.1. Since I'm new to windows 8.1 I'm not knowledgeable to do it myself.

ok i hope im posting this in the write area. I started with one desktop pc and collected my music. then i purcased a lap top also running xp where i transfered my music folder( which has been organized into subcatagories by itunes i.e. artist/album/song) I since then added songs speratly to each . so i now have 2 libraries with different songs. I wanna join them so that i dont have duplicates of the songs i have on both. what is the best and most efficent way for me to do such a thing? Is it as simple as drag and droping the root file into the same directory as the other? will that only add the "new" songs?

Is there a way to do this to a created folder? Show one icon when empty, then another when it has something?

The motherboard on my computer died and I managed to get a free one from a colleague. I put the hdd from my old system as a slave in the new one but some files seem to have disappeared. I used to have two "my pictures" folders. One in "my documents" and on my desktop. The one on my desktop was used to house a few years worth of digital camera photos and videos and the one in my documents was the default one where everything would get saved to. So after putting the hdd in my new system as a slave the my pictures folder that I had on the desktop is empty. When I try to click on it I get the error message "E:\documents and settings\desktop\my pictures is not accessible. Access is denied." and when I right click it it comes up as an empty folder. But overall the hdd still has the same amount of free space as it used to when it was connected to my old motherboard so the files must still be there right? The other my pictures folder, the one that was in my documents is 100% ok. Does anyone know what happened?

its permissions you need to purge permissions into the folder....

thats all it is

so what you do is add a account on your current computer with the SAME user name and password ( this will give the computer pass through authentication ) then reboot the computer log on as this user and try to pull the data again...

I had a series of sub-folders stored under a main folder in the "Public Videos" library of one of our machines.
I have not moved or deleted anything.
I have these sub-folders consecutively numbered; 01_FolderName, 02_FolderName, 03_ you get the idea.
A while ago, when I went to add a new sub-folder in Explorer, in the folder-tree list on the left margin, sub-folder 01_FolderName is listed as though everything is okay; however, when I clicked the main folder to display all the sub-folders on a page, sub-folder 01_ does not show up, even though it is listed as being there in the folder tree.
When I click on sub-folder 01_ in the folder tree, I get this message :

What has happened to this folder and how can I find it ?

Thanks for reading.

Quick question...

(FYI.... I do NOT have windows 7 - thats why I am asking this question)

In "Vista" you could click on START then MYCOMPUTER then RIGHT-click on the CD Drive and a menu would come up with the option to "Explore" so you can "browse" the folders and files on the cd.

But in Windows 7... when you Right-click there is no longer the option to "Explore" - what is the equivalent to "browse" the folders and directories on the CD.

Is it just "Open" ?

(I know in Vista if you just try to double click on the CD Drive it trys to to the auto-play)

Thank you.

1. I have noticed that my system32 folder is adding around 92 MB every day for the last ten days, seriously depleting my HDD space.

I attach a screenshot of the contents.

Please see items 3 to 10 on the list, with a strange file name.

kindly advise how these files are suddenly created and how to get rid of them and also ensure they do not get created every day.

2. Kindly also see item no. 1 "dllcache" which has 448MB. is it possible to reclaim some space from this?

thank you very much for help.

Answer:system32 folder contents

The Dllcache folder contains copies of important system files and helps your system to recover from errors. You should just leave it alone.

Quote:

Under Windows XP, WFP stops populating the Dllcache folder when less than (600 MB + maximum size of the page file) of space is available on the hard disk.

In fact, you shouldn't be in the system32 folder at all thinking to delete files to save space. Windows and your applications use space dynamically. If you are close to filling your drive then it's time for a new drive purchase.

Is there a way to print all the files (word, excel, etc.) in a desktop folder at once without opening each one individually? Would it work with shortcuts. I work in environmental health and would be involved with disaster relief if a hurricane hit our area and am trying to set up a quick and easy way to print important documents and forms before an evacuation. Thank you.

Answer:Printing contents of a folder

Other than a command line form of what you need, there are no real ways to do this in Windows without a third party program such as JDirPrint or Treesize
both are free utilities with upgrade versions that support more functionality for a fee.

I use both of these on a fairly regular basis.

Is there software out there that can examine all folders of a specific source and all its sub-folders (nested up to 40 folders) and output the number of files and types?

Answer:How to examine folder contents?

Maybe not exactly what you want. But for NTFS only partitions, WizTree is very fast and shows a breakdown of files/folders contained in each folder.

Antibody Software - WizTree finds the files and folders using the most disk space on your hard drive

It's freeware.

Edit: for a visual representation of folder structure see console Tree command.

There must be something that does specifically what you request but I don't recall seeing it. I would check the freeware sites such as snapfiles, softpedia, download.com and sourceforge.net

I know where the folders are stored by doing 'properties' when right-clicking on the folder. My question is how to move that folder and all its contents on a floppy or CD? Do I need to use Windows Explorer? Thanks....

Yeah, I understand what you are talking about.
I'm afraid that is how Windows Vista is, now you might be able to change the folder settings, but this is complex and will most probably have a destructive affect on your PC.

Just to let you know, that the documents folder which is called 'YourName' is basically the same as XP's 'C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\'.

My folder containing .PDFs scans and .JPGs and sub-folders containing more, which all amoung to several GBs now appears empty, and reads 0 MB. Even my Symantec Endpoint Protection anti-virus reads the folder as 0 MB.
However, though I cannot see the contents, and cannot access them, I do the following:
- I can access that folder's subfolders if I type the subfolders name in the Windows Directory Bar. I can open and move the contents of those subfolders that I accessed this way
- I can see some of my folder's files, and one subfolder, through accessing it via Network Sharing on another computer terminal. Emphasis on 'some of my folder's files'.
I cannot .RAR my folder. WinRAR has the diagnostic contents "CANNOT READ CONTENTS OF FOLDER".
I cannot copy the folder. Well, I can copy it, but it produces a blank, empty folder with nothing in it. Including the 'hidden/missing subfolders' that I can still access in the original.
Since the folder itself reads 0 MB, my harddrive reads several GB lighter. However, files of my subfolder are still there.
I made a new folder within that folder. I exited, and then reentering the folder, the new folder I created is 'gone'.
Last things I've done are:
- moved a scanned .PDF file (from my own scanner) to the folder
- forgot to close the "Accept Cookies" bit on my browser. Contracted three Trojans, which I've since rid my computer of when I remembered
- installed a patch for my scanner, downloaded from HP

Hi,

This is the scenario:
On a shared PC I want to protect a Folder so that only I can add or change the files within it, however I want all other users to still be able to read those files.

I've looked at password protection / locking the folder etc but these don't seem to have the 'others can look but don't touch option'.

A bit like Office files modify protection e.g. if you know the password you can modify the file, otherwise its read-only, but at the folder level.

Any ideas please?

Answer:Can't view folder contents on Vista...

Show hidden folders?

Could also be a permission problem, although I'd think Vista would throw up an error if it was.

Personally, I'd go snooping around in the command prompt (run -> cmd) as admin and navigate to that folder, then hit a dir command.

Get the name of a folder, and then punch the path in to the address bar at the top of the explorer window and see if it takes.

I use the View Folder Contents Power Toy for Win98 on my XP machine, since the XP Power Toys didn't include it. It allows the user to right-click on any folder and get a "contents" submenu showing all contents of that folder. If you select a file or program from that menu, it will then open without having to open the actual folder it's in.

In 98 this worked without a hitch. In XP, the contents submenu still appears but clicking on any items on the menu results in a crash/freeze up. I'd like to get it working, if anyone can figure it out...

Also, it seems to happen only to the My Documents folder and any/all folders within it.

Anyone with several reg cleaners may have noticed that the only Start
Menu shortcuts that get tagged for deletion are orphans. (That's a
shortcut where the target or command line is invalid.) This makes no
sense because as you make changes to your Start Menu whole blocks
of shortcuts may be moved to new categories or subcategories, renamed,
etc. Because they still have the same path name you usually end up
with several redundant Start Menu registry entries. You could export
the Start Menu reg key to a text file and try to edit it manually, but the
job is overwhelming!

There's an endless list of apps that will compare the contents of two
directories, and show you the differences. I'm wondering if there is an
app that will compare a folder with a registry key, and show the differences
between the two. An app like this would allow you to reorder and clean up a
registry key that contains dozens or hundreds of redundant entries.

Can any of you please direct me to the proper forum? On certain folders, right-clicking and displaying the properties shows me an increasing folder size and an incorrect number of files and folders contained therein.

Answer:Folder sizes and contents are incorrect

No. It is not. Size is seen being incremented because Windows reads and calculates the total number of files and folders and their sizes while you pop the properties box open.

This number and size includes all hidden files and system protected hidden files which can't be seen inside a folder unless viewing of those files is enabled. These special hidden files and folders account for the extra figure that you see.

I hate to admit this, but I can't figure out how to restore XP control panel contents to an alphabetized classic view, insted of being grouped so everything starting with "A" is in one group, with a bold heading of A, then there are spaces, and everything starting with "B" is in the next group, and so on. Sometimes I goof and clicked too many times on the "name" column heading and this happens in normal folders. I think I've gotten it back to normal by clicking on the "name" column heading a few times (it's always a pain), but I can't get that to work in control panel now. This time I was working to change from classic view to the new Category View in control panel, when there wasn't an option to do that on the left. I finally got the new catagroy view by going to tools, options, and changing general tab, Tasks, to "Show common tasks in folders", instead of "Use Windows classic Folders". That also perminantly brought back the change option on the left It affected only some things, like "My Computer" and Control Panel, but it dosen't affect directories, like the contents of C:, or sub-directories under it. This is so strange. Viewing "My Computer" give me fits too. I can't get it to show drives in letter order. It does a catagory view too.

Any ideas how all this works, especially undoing catagory view in the control panel?

Thanks,
Mark

Answer:Restoring XP folder contents to alphabetized?

Go into Control Panel, then Click VIEW. And Make Sure that you are set on TILES, then click on VIEW again and make sure that under ARRANGE ICONS BY there is nothing checked (I'm guessing that you have "SHOW IN GROUPS" checked marked by accident).

Optional: Then if that is the view you want for all folders Click TOOLS-->FOLDER OPTIONS, then click on the VIEW Tab and then click APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS

I have folders that contain the lists of documents, or video clips, or music clips, etc.  When I go to the folder, I click on the item, it opens and I read the document, view the video, or listen to the music.  I heard that there is a way to copy the list in the folder and convert it to an excel file/sheet that can be edited and sorted, etc.  This excel sheet would not replace the original list in the folder but would be a separate record to make keeping track of what is in the folder simpler.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hopefully this is what you are looking to do.

For many many folders of items I use a file catalog program called Where Is It. It is a paid program.

This isn't such a big deal but I was just curious, does Windows 7 have any way to sort folder contents in true alphabetical order, like older versions of Windows used to?

So that it sorts files like this:

1.txt
2000.txt
30.txt
4.txt

Answer:Any way to sort folder contents alphabetically?

When viewing a folder with multiple folders inside, click on "View" then around 3/4 the way down the list click "sort by" and then choose from there!
I'm not sure i 100% understood what you meant but i thought i'd try anyway!

This is a recent occurrence, maybe related to a new windows update item. Clicking on (say) the Documents folder will not open the folder. Instead the system puts the item on the task bar. Clicking on the task bar item does nothing, it simply sits there. Can anyone shed some light on this problem and, if possible, suggest a fix, please?
Any assistance greatly appreciated. (Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit).

Answer:Unable to read contents of folder

Tweaking.com's Windows Repair (All in One) may be one solution. Accept the default checks [such as file associations, etc] and perhaps add icon repair. There are many others far wiser than I who will also add their ideas and solutions, heed them

Hey guys,

So I've managed to change the icons for both Open and Closed states for the default Windows folders (following the method described here: change default icons), but this wasn't able to explain how to change the icon for a folder containing files. So all of my folders which contain files still show the default icon, which sucks even more than it did originally!

Is anyone able to help?

Cheers,
Narpstar

Answer:How can I change the icon for a folder with contents?

Hi 'Narpstar', welcome to EightForums!

Obtain or create an image you want to represent the folder, convert it to a .ico (icon) file, (500x500 is a good size); place that ico in the folder if possible then choose properties/customize/change icon, navigate to the folder and choose the ico file, click apply and ok.
Make sure you don't change the file or folder path or it may revert to the default again.
