Newly installed apps. ot appearing in program menu unable to pin apps

Question: Newly installed apps. ot appearing in program menu unable to pin apps

Newly installed apps. ot appearing in program menu unable to pin apps to start menu.

This happened to me previously and I could find no solution....I eventually created a new admin profile, where newly installed apps appeared in the program menu and I could pin apps tomthe start menu feom a desktopmshortxut etc.

I copied over my video docs pictures and music folders to the new profile. Now a few months later the same thing is happening again. I have created a new admin profile and it all, works fine there. I have searched on the internet and others have the same issue, but of course anything you search for always finds someone else with the same issue...

Hopefully someone can help me with this very annoying problem

Preferred Solution: Newly installed apps. ot appearing in program menu unable to pin apps

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

actually resolved the issue....I turned on windows update and did a massive update, the start menu looks a little different, maybe a different font, pinned items can only be mace smaller or bigger, used to be an option for long ( didnt use this anyway ) but new apps now showing and pin to start menu works.....so MS fixed it, there is some advantage to updating, have backed up with true image and turned off updating, will back up again before updating next time......the update didnt like GPU-Z and temoved it plus a few other apps and turned defender back on i think.......shutup-10 sorted all this out.....

I apologise for posting this problem again, but seem to have exhausted options, so hoped by starting a new thread, may get some new ideas.

Installed Apps not showing in all apps menu.

resolved the same problem on my laptop, by running a script provided by Cliff S, but now it's happening on my PC.and the script does not help, also tried App Store troubleshooter. but no fault found.

i installed some small simple apps inc recuva, which appear in the C programs folder and I can create a shortcut and task bar icon, but it's not showing in all apps...

been doing some research and someone suggested the Windows installer could be at fault ran services and the installer was not running ( stopped) is this normal ?
started ok, but no option to set it to auto run

any help would really be appreciated

thanks

Answer:Installed Apps not showing in all apps menu

UPDATE
I had a reply from the MS community forum suggesting I setup a new profile. ( as my current one could be corrupted ) I did this and the apps that Iminstalled under my profile showed in the all apps menu ....so does this suggest I have a problem with corruption in my original profile ?
I am advised I can simply copy all the fils in the original profile folder to the new....or is there a different/better way ? Is it likely this will resolve a user profile corruption issue. or will I just copy the problem to the new profile ?

thanks
UPDATE-2
copied all the files possible from my original user profile to a new one ( had to be logged in to a third user profile to do this ) the programs I installed in the original profile are showing in the new one, but all the mods I did to my start menu and icons is obviously gone as this is linked to a DAT file....
would like to know where the corruption in my profile would likely be to have caused my problem with newly installed apps not showing in the all apps menu, if it is one of the DAT files I could maybe copy the others over and retain my start menu layout.

any help would really be appreciated

Hello, let me just say i searched on the forums and found someone with a similar problem as me:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-n....html?highlight=newly+installed+programs+open

and

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/478076-new-apps-install-problem.html

My problem is basically, for the past few weeks, any newly installed programs wont work. What happens is i will double click the shortcut, the mouse changes to the hourglass meaning something is loading, and then nothing at all happens. Nothing opens, nothing changes at all. Prior to the new installs every other installed thing works. This is more of a nuisance than anything because if i have to reinstall anything, it wont work then. The installation process happened fine, no errors or anything. Let me know if you need any more detailed info on the problem because this is all i could think of to put.

My specs:

* Intel Pentium 4 CPU (3.4GHz)
* 2GB of Ram
* Radeon x800 Graphics Card with 256MB
* Windows XP Media Edition SP 2
let me know if you need more spec info

i attached a dxdiag and hijackthis log if that can help in anyway

Hi,

In Windows 8, all newly installed apps and desktop programs automatically received a tile on the modern Start screen. That isn't the case in Windows 8.1: Now, you have to dive into the All Apps screen and manually pin new software to the Start screen.

Is there any way to make windows 8.1 (store) automatically pin newly installed apps to start screen? its annoying to search for the app in "All Apps" then pin it manually. why Microsoft made it manually does it even necessary.

Answer:Annoying Newly Apps Installed

If you right click on the app, you can select "pin to start". I think this is what you are after (I hope).

oops - just spotted that you had done this already

Hello everyone,

I am new to this forum and was excited to find it as there are a lot of people giving great answers to Windows 10 problems and I sadly ran into one recently. I have had Windows 10 installed for about 4 months now and things have been going decent. A couple of days ago my system received a Windows 10 update that took about 2 hours and looked like it was installing Windows all over again (but it wasn't) and once this happened I couldn't find the Microsoft Edge application and the start button would not work at all. After doing a system restore to a date prior to the update things are back to "normal" except for this one problem.

Currently my start menu does not show any Recently Used or Favorite Apps in it as shown below:

If I select the All apps button it also shows nothing:

I made sure that all of the settings in order to see recently used apps and all my apps are correct as below are my settings:

I have tried a couple of solutions that handled Cortana not searching for programs or "some" apps were missing from all apps but I have yet to find a solution to when absolutely no apps are showing in the start menu. I know the applications still exist on my machine as I use Firefox and Microsoft Word and Outlook plus many more apps but they aren't showing up at all. The first thing i did after installing Win10 was setting my updates to notify for downloads and installation so that I could decide whether to download updates or not. However I noticed that new apps like People, Phone Companion, Calculator appeared on the start menu after sometime. These apps were not there when i first installed Windows 10. Also after I first used my HP printer, The HP remote control app installed itself and was visible on the start screen. Is anyone else facing this issue of new apps appearing on the start menu even with automatic updates turned off?

Those were default windows 10 apps. Which automatically appears on every system. And you do have to check the store. it can install and update apps.

Hmm, I thought Vista came with a program that would allow the sys admin to choose which programs when accessed to not appear on the start menu. I know there are registry edits that accomplish the same thing, but isn't there a program to do this?

I can't locate the shortcut, but the main reason for this is mainly for programs I don't access on a regular basis, such as paint, or notebook.

Thanks for any ideas anyone can give me.

Anyone have any ideas how I can sort this out. I am running Windows 8.1 Preview.

Hello,

I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to 10. My upgrade has been fairly buggy, but I am slowly working things out. One thing I can't seem to solve is my office apps are not showing up in the start menu folder. I had office 2010 before the upgrade, and that is when I first had the problem. I then uninstalled 2010 and upgraded to office 2013, and the problem persists.

After a few restarts and such I noticed the folder for office 2013 did show up in the start menu, but the only thing inside that folder is infopath. You can see what I mean in the attached screen shot. Also you will notice another folder beneath the first title Microsoft Office 2013. That folder was pinned to the start menu so that I could still access my office apps. I just did that as a quick fix. But not when I right click on that folder there is no option to unpin from the start menu. It only says pin to start menu.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Office Apps Not Appearing in Start Menu Folder

Hello Jf2006, welcome to the Ten Forums.

Using Office 2016 I am not sure if this applies to your situation but please check if the Office 2013 apps are located in Start Menu individually according to their name.

If I check the Microsoft Office entry in the Start Menu I can only find some Office tools there:
However, I can find all individual Office applications in their respective entries. Word under W, PowerPoint under P and so on:

1. I downloaded an app from the windows phone store.
2. I copied the .XAP into the root directory of my phone.
3. I went to store, clicked on '...' and selected "Install Local Apps"
4. There is nothing listed.
The app is here, http://www.windowsphone.com/zh-cn/store/app/-/9139b19c-50b5-480c-abe8-d7a6aa43ccc6
I have restarted my phone, renamed the app, redownloaded and copied again. Made a folder in my root directory called APPS and put it there.
It must know it's there because the menu entry for install local apps appears, but there are 0 apps in the list.

Answer:Why aren't apps appearing under 'Install Local Apps'?

Just move downloaded app to folder named "downloads" and reboot the device and check it in local app section.

'Move installed apps' and 'New apps will save to' setting is greyed out for me, after upgrading to Windows 10. Anyone else seeing the same way?
There was a way to Move Windows 10 Apps to Other Drive and Change Install Location.

Answer:Move installed apps & New apps will save to settings greyed out - Windows 10

It appears that this decision has been postponed by Microsoft:

We have actually made the decision to postpone the apps on SD functionality to a later release. While I know this feature excited many of us, we didn't feel like it was ready for prime time. Our goal is to delight users with everything that we build, and we truly feel that that is what will happen once we have fully built our vision for this feature.

I want to organize the All Apps list on the Start Menu, but I need to get rid of the apps that clutter it up. I would prefer to do it without replacing the start menu with something like Classic Shell and I don't want to delete all the apps, so I've been attempting to find a way to remove the contents of shell:Appsfolder from the start menu.

I was hoping I could receive some insight into how exactly the Start Menu works. I know that the All Apps list appears to be a combination of three different directories:

shell:Appsfolder
%AppData%\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs

Which leads me to believe that it might operate similarly to other system folders like This PC and Libraries, but I haven't found anything that seemed useful in the registry so far. I would appreciate it if someone could help point me in the right direction.

On Apps List, already installed some apps are showing as Pending, Same app showing twice as two different apps, one is the installed app and the same app showing as Pending just below the same installed app. It started showing like that since I did hard reset my Lumia 730 when on build 10586.218, (now on 10586.318) The Installed apps which are showing as pending on Apps List are not showing on Store Queued items. Only some installed apps are showing as Pending on Apps List,
And I tried uninstalling and reinstalling an app. Though still showing as Pending. Some uninstalled apps are also showing as Pending on Apps List.
Someone please help me resolve the issue. Thank you.

Does anybody know of a solution to this problem:
A new roaming user logs in, they only see Desktop / Onedrive and Store tile on their start screen.
If they open the store they can install a default app like MSN news or any other app and the app will open. However when the close the app, they cannot find the app anywhere in the start menu even if they search for it. They also are unable to pin anything
to their start screen, it gives the option to pin but nothing happens.

Tried resetting their profile and still the same thing happens. Other users who log in see the default Apps like News, sport etc.
Not a major problem but just strange and very random.

Hello Everyone,
I have a issue with a simple task in W10 Pro.
When every i try to find/search my installed program i get cortona and she always search in store and web.
As in windows 7 i can simply find program by searching in start-menu.
I tried like: pressing on windows key then type by keyboard. click on search box and type.
If anyone know how to do it please share, its a quickest way to find programs in windows.
Much easier than clicking on windows key going to all apps then click on letters and then look for the program
Screen Shots are attached:

Answer:How to SEARCH INSTALLED Apps/Programs in Windows 10 start menu ???

In my experience searching directly from the cortana box on the task bar works fine. I don't think I have actually tried from the start menu yet.

I just upgraded from 10049 to 10061 using Windows Update and found that I cannot launch apps I have pinned to the Start Menu. 'This PC' was the first I tried and then several folders and applications I use often do no open when I try to open them from the Start Menu. I get a brief blink and nothing happens. They all open happily if I do so through File Explorer. Is this a problem with 10061 or, most probably, am I doing something wrong?

Thank you.

I can place a new folder or custom shortcut in the correct start menu location (current user or all users) but it will not appear in the All apps list. If I go to the folder or shortcut and right-click Pin to Start it will appear as a tile in the start menu, but still will not show up in the All apps list. I think this behavior started with Version 1511 since it was working for me in the previous version.

Answer:Unable to add to All apps list in Start Menu

Hi, a quick test seems to show the same. The representation of traditional start menu items and structures in Win 10's start menu is (in my experience) garbage. And not just since the November upgrade. Sorry to have to say that, but it flattens all the subfolders inherited from a 'normal' menu used in Win 7 and 8, loses the sub-folders, including those created by each program's installation, leading to things like

Help

...

where each 'Help' is from a different program.

If you want a meaningful start menu without these quirks and oddities, try e.g. Classic Shell.

Having overall issues with the operating system on this machine. The system will boot to initially a blank screen, after a few moments the icons and rest will appear.

OS: Windows8.1

After the initial system file check, it did load the intial explorer shell alot faster but still have issues with the 8.1 Start Menu and related 8.1 Services including searching via the Windows charms.

Ran System File Check , Found Errors unable to fix some. Attached System File Check CBS.Log.

Initially the system was unable to launch the System File Check due to pending repairs. I had to manually delete the "Pending.XML" Files in order to launch the system file check initially. I am attempting to try to refrain from running a system refresh/reset. Any other additional suggestions or thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Update: Appears that upon creating a new user profile that the start menu now loads. Search is appearing. I think it may be just a corrupt user profile. Think this is solved. Just wanted to share the update if anyone else had this issue later.

I was given a Windows 8.1 tablet that once had a detachable keyboard which the guy lost. he reset the whole computer and after I got my information on it instead. After the reset, Windows was no longer activated and I had to reactivate it. which neither of us knows why, it was activated before we did a data factory reset. after I created my user, I installed a bunch of exes. now I go to try to see if I could test out the Windows Store to search for apps. but I search "Windows Store" or "app store" and several other things that may bring it up, but it always says, "no apps match your search" like if the Windows store is missing or somehow magically removed with the reset process. How do I get it back?

When I try top open any Microsoft Office apps, I get the error:

Windows cannot find 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again.

I even get the same message if I open the file from that location. I've repaired, uninstalled, and re-installed a few times. Two Microsoft support team members weren't able to help.

Any help greatly appreciated; I've wasted a lot of time trying to fix this.

Could I suggest you try creating another user Id and see if the problem persists. While not an ideal solution if it works you can copy your data files over to the new id.

I just wonder why some of my apps are not listed there?! I also tried "apps and features" from settings and still some of my installed software don't show up there either!
Even tried with 3rd party uninstaller program (Revo) and still no trace of these installed software!

EX: Cubase, Photpshop, Premiere, etc

Answer:Uninstall or change a program (Some installed apps not listed) !

After touching the W10 icon, try 'All Apps' on the bottom left.

Check if your program is listed there, then right-click and 'Uninstall'.

I am experiencing the following very strange intermittent problems and evil behavior in XP.

My Start Menu sometimes only appears for a split second when clicked and will not stay displayed. Also minimised apps. wont maximise and apps. and short cuts on the desktop wont launch when double left clicked and instead show properties as if they were right clicked!!

I have done the following to try and resolve these issues.

1. Updated from SP1 to SP 2 as well as all the security updates.

2. Ran Adaware and Spybot to find any unwelcome visitors. Adaware only found one minor issue.

3. Ran Symantec Antivirus which found and quarantined several viruses.

4. Ran WinDoctor which found and said it resolved quite a few issues.

This is really a pain as it makes the system virtually unusable except for when it is behaving which is rare.

Would be grateful for any suggestions, solutions, incantations or workarounds for this issue/s

Kind regards

Binaryboy

Hi, I'm having an issue and I'm wondering if anyone else has any ideas on what to do about it.

Some desktop apps are missing from the "All apps" section of the Start menu. Most programs are there, but I'd say 10-15% are missing. Apps that are missing also do not show up when searching the Start menu, and they cannot be pinned to the Start screen as tiles from File Explorer. (The option to "Pin to Start" is there, but selecting it doesn't do anything.)

I have a screenshot here of Outlook 2013 missing from the Start menu even though it is present in the "Start Menu" programs shortcut folder. This is one of many examples.

I've tried resetting the Windows Search index a few times and that hasn't done any good.

Additionally, I've tried adding my own shortcuts and folders to the "Start Menu" programs folder and the changes do not reflect on the Start menu "All apps" section. It's as if it has cached the structure somewhere and it is not updating for changes (or it is ignoring some changes). I tried to figure out some way to kick it into resetting but I have not been successful.

Anyone else seen something like this or have any places to look?

Thanks.

Answer:Desktop/Win32 apps missing from Start Menu "All Apps" and search

Windows search has nothing to do with the Metro side of things. You really need to be using either Classic Shell or Start10 to be able to see those items on the desktop.

Until Microsoft has the fixes ready by the 29th, there are going to be issues with this Trialware. It is going to take at least a year under Microsoft's timeline, before they have 10 completed, even though users are using it as their OS on the 29th and beyond.

I installed many apps locker they all work fine but I can still access apps from the all apps list.

Answer:My apps locker work fine but apps can be accessed from the all apps list, how can I prevent this?

Yes. There is no such thing as a real app locker app in Windows Phones. This is because third party apps are not allowed to interact or interfere with other third party apps due to Windows Phone Sandboxing technology.
If the developer was careful with his app, he or she would have indicated the limitations of the "app locker" he created in the app description. Otherwise, if there is no such disclaimer about the limitations of the app in the app description, the user is encouraged to report the app to Microsoft as a fraudulent or misleading app.

Last night my Lumia 925 randomly locked up (which it seems to do quite often) so I did a soft reset and then noticed a bunch of problems.
First I noticed a bunch of my app tiles were blank or only displaying the app name. That happens from time to time when apps are updated or decide to lose track of the day. So I tried to go in and refresh them. But a lot of them wouldn't open. Others will open but crash immediately, and others still will open and display their info but won't update their live tiles. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling some of them but it has had no effect.
In addition to apps not behaving, various settings windows won't open. I thought maybe my phone updated and the update was buggy, but I can't check because Extras+Info crashes before opening.
Also, in my app list the first 4 apps are things I did not install, and don't look normal. @{Miscrosoft.BingTranslate, @{Microsoft.MSBatterySaver, @{Microsoft.MSCalendar, and @{Microsoft.MSPodcast. Pretty sure none of those are supposed to be displaying that way.
I didn't attempt to install anything. I've been running 8.1. I don't know if there was an update pushed out last night that I didn't notice installing.
But my phone isn't working and I am frustrated.
Anyone know what's wrong or have suggestions?

Real quick. Just installed Win10, and installed all the programs.

So I have a bunch of "New" programs. Is there a quick way to clear New, without having to open every single program?

Can't seem to find an option or anything on google about it.

Also, I go to add more shortcuts to the Start Menu (All Apps List).

I go to both locations here:
%appdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu (which goes to C:\Users\[Login]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs)
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

But whenever I copy a Shortcut for this one particular program (HexChat) into those locations, it just pins the shortcut to the tile area of the Start Menu, and not in the All Apps list.

It is actually weird, because the first shortcut I added was added to the All Apps list just fine.

Edit: Seems to be only this one program, HexChat

Not that I'm aware of. You don't have to open all the programs though, what I do is just go down the 'All Apps' list and right-click on the ones that say 'New', which get's rid of their 'New' status.

Hello,
This has been a continuing problem, but of low enough importance that I have waited until now to get some advice. If I install a program it automatically put a startup icon in the start menu. Not pinned in. When I hit remove from list, nothing happens. Eventually, and I can't say how many reboots it goes away. Am i doing something wrong? Thanks for any help!
Glenn

Answer:Unable to remove from Start Menu list, the last installed program

Hello Glenn,

If you mean the bottom half of the Start Menu under the "Pin to" area (not in "All Programs"), then this would be the recent programs area.

Since the usual "Remove from list" didn't work to remove the program from the recent programs list, you could turn off and on recent programs to remove it. This will remove all the other recent programs as well though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hey guys,

So you know how it's possible to move your shortcuts into folders and rename said folders on regular "desktop" apps? Is this possible with Windows Store "Metro" apps as well?

What I'd really like to do, for example, is have a folder called "Games" where I put all of the games I've gotten from the store. Similar to how Office 2013 is its own folder and you don't HAVE to have Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc on their own in the start menu.

However, opening up the Explorer folder with the Start Menu only shows my "desktop apps" plus a couple choice Metro apps (like Settings)... none of the others.

Any pointers? I'm sure they're stored SOMEWHERE...

Your OS would break.
Users cannot move metro app installation folders around like standalone Win32 programs.

That is what Start groups (tiles) are for. Create a group called "Games" and another group for "Office"
Pin the relevant program / app to your named group.

Users cannot choose where to install metro apps.

Happy New Year community! Here's my situation. Just received a replacement Nokia Icon. I haven't installed any apps and uninstalled as much bloatware as I could.
My question is: Should I load up my phone with my apps then install Denim (when it's released) or wait for the update to get a clean install then install my apps?
Does it make a difference?
Any advice/opinion would be much appreciated!

Answer:Can I Install 8.1 Denim with no apps installed or install 8.1 over existing apps?

Really doesn't matter. Just install whatever you want. When the update is available you can always do a factory reset before installing it so you will have a clean slate.

Answer:Windows 10 apps not appearing

Hi - was it a clean install or an upgrade? I've had issues like that after an upgrade, but they all went away with a clean install. You don't need to set up an account with Microsoft. I just clean installed on a laptop after doing the upgrade to activate W10 and everything works perfectly. I just chose a login name on set up and login as you would on W7. I have Cortana turned off and we don't use the Microsoft Store for apps. Some apps are preinstalled. If you wanted apps from the Microsoft store you'd need to open a Microsoft account. We just have W10 set up with our usual programs. It's nice and zippy and the notification panel is good and informative. Obviously back everything up first and save personal files separately as well. A clean install is quite quick I found - 15 minutes or so. There aren't that many windows updates to do on installation either.

I've already posted one app-related thread this evening:

Store app started using Greek language

And now yet more crazy things happening.

I play Microsoft Solitaire, Mahjong and Sudoku, including the daily challenges. I play these almost every day.

Today I had Solitaire open while I was doing other things (including writing the other post). When I went back to the app it reloaded (as normal) but then an ad started to play. This was an ad for a different Microsoft game and it was not possible to close the ad, I just had to wait for it to finish, after which my game loaded as normal.

I played a couple of games, clicked on the next one, and once again got an ad first.

This happened several times, sometimes an ad before each game, sometimes I could play 2 or 3 games before getting another ad. The ads are random. I've seen ads for Bingo, Solitaire, Mahjong, Sudoku and some other Microsoft games.

I tried playing games from a Solitaire Star Collection - same thing - I got ads.

I tried playing games from the Mahjong Daily Challenges. Again I got ads.

I didn't try Sudoku because frankly I'm beginning to wonder if I'm going mad .

This DID NOT happen yesterday when I played these same games.

My partner is sitting next to me playing the same games and he is not getting these random ads appearing.

What is going on with my Store apps?

Answer:And now random ads are appearing in my apps!

Hi,
About a week ago, I downloaded a Super Nintendo emulator app and a couple of games (rom files) to my PC (a Lenovo pc running Windows 8.1), and found that it had also downloaded a load of crap along with it. I started getting lots of ad pop-ups and my home page was changed from Google to some other one (I can't remember the name now - it was something like adstarsearch or something).

I then went to Programs/Features and uninstalled all the things that had installed on that day, deactivated the unwanted search provider ad-ons and ran Malwarebytes which found some malware items and deleted them. My computer was running fine from then on... or so I thought.

Yesterday, when I switched my pc on, I found that after it had booted up, not everything had started up properly - several icons that usually appear at the bottom right of the screen aren't appearing (eg: my antivirus program Avast, dropbox.com and I don't have access to the internet (I usually have to connect via a Powerline network adapter because wifi's not too good upstairs in our house, so effectively a wired connection, but this is not connecting now). If I try to use any programs or applications (Excel, Control Panel or anything), the computer just hangs and the app never opens. If I try to log off, I get a message saying "Task host window - Task host is stopping background tasks".

So basically, my pc is now unusable. I'm guessing I'm still infected by some sort of malware, but if I can't even g... Read more

A new OS X malware uses standard extensions such as .pdf and .doc to disguise malicious files as basic, harmless subjects. Discovered by F-Secure, the spoof technique uses a special Unicode character found in file names that gives an app the appearance of a standard document file, and although the threat level is quite low at this point, any malware and outbreak should be treated with a dose of respect and vigilance.

OS X has long since been regarded as a safe haven, free from the malware and Trojan attacks that have plagued the Windows operating system over the years. However, Apple?s claim on its website that Macs weren?t susceptible to such problems had to be hastily removed in light of last year?s Flashback Trojan outbreak, and incidentally enough, F-Secure was at the heart of the clean-up job back then.Click to expand...

I just downloaded Windows 10 and am having issues with: missing pop-up menus; "Edge" & "Store" apps don't run (open with plain blue screens); I can't access Settings (same problem--I get only a plain blue screen); also Word 7 is buggy (i.e. the minimize button is missing when I have a doc open). From reading other threads here, I decided I should run a System File Check in Windows, but when I right click on the Start button (well...where I assume the start button is--all I have is a black square in the lower right corner!) all I get is a tall rectangle box with an arrow, and no text, no menu choices. When I click on the arrow, I get another tall box with no options.
I have an HP Touchsmart desktop (would like to give more specifics, but the "my computer" file is gone and I don't know where to find that info in 10 yet). I use Firefox...is that the problem? I'd sure appreciate any ideas of where I should go from here. Thank you!

I was running the demo of 3DMark05 last night (fun to watch, even on my machine, I love the music and credits) and I could have sworn I saw the windows cursor flash on screen a few times. What causes this to happen in full screen applications? I assume it has something to do with focus. How does one go about fixing this sort of an issue (provided it was the cursor and not sarks looking like one)?It happened frequently on my freind's windows 98 machine too.

Answer:Cursor appearing in full screen apps?

It usually only shows up when it is moved. Mine shows up every once in a while on fuill screen appz too. Just a minor windwos flaw maybe. Or the sounds is rumbling your desk just enough to move the mouse to a point where the computer notices the movement. Nothing to worry about. Just move your mouse off to the side. All the way to the right side of the screen, bottom right corner, dissapears pretty well.

Hello, this is my first post to this forum.

I am running an English version of Windows XP Pro SP3 on an Intel-based system in China, on my girlfriends' computer.

The OS is in English so I can do maintenance with minimal bother, and the apps (for the most part,) are in Simplified Chinese, so she can work with minimal bother.

I have Eastern Language Support installed and enabled, and all of the installed IME's work fine. Also, on all installed Adobe and Microsoft apps, the Chinese shows up fine.

However, on kwmusic (a popular chinese music player/search app,) the menus and local content windows only show ????'s and garbage characters instead of Chinese. The online content windows, on the other hand, display the Chinese properly.

Incidentally, the installers for ALL of our Chinese-version apps also display garbage characters instead of Chinese, even though all of the apps but one have no problem after installation.

Just for fun, I tried changing the default non-Unicode language to Simplified Chinese, but that caused the kwmusic app upon opening to return an error screen in garbage characters and ???'s, and shut down immediately. After changing the default non-Unicode language back to US English, it returned to the behavior initially described.

Previously we ran kwmusic on a Simplified Chinese version of XP Home Sp2, and it worked fine.

Please advise.

Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this matter.

Answer:Windows XP Pro SP3: Garbage characters appearing in some apps

Problem solved. I guess I was on the right track originally.

When I changed the non-unicode language to Simplified Chinese, I forgot that it might be best to REINSTALL the malfunctioning app after making that change.

I realized this just now, acted accordingly, and now all is fine.

Hi there,

My apologies if this has been covered already, however I did a quick search and couldn't find anything that directly applied to the general issues I have been receiving.

Let me just start off by noting I noticed this issue persisted whilst I was using Windows 8, (8.1), and I figured that it would be resolved once making the transition to Windows 10.

The issue I have been having is the Apps that I have downloaded from the Store, such as Netflix and Twitter, are not appearing on the Windows 10 Menu (and previously Windows 8). In the store they say that they are already downloaded and installed, and yet, they do not appear.

The second issue I have is I am not receiving the App notifications where the message pops up in the top right corner accompanied by the sound. Again, this stopped working suddenly when using Windows 8 and still does not work. For instance, my email notifications aren't popping up. And yes, I've gone to Settings > Notifications and everything is selected properly.

I feel like I am not getting the connectivity I am supposed to get with both, previously, Windows 8 and now 10. I am unsure why these functions stopped working.

If you could provide any help, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have recently built a new PC and I have had this issue with the text. In some websites and programs it appears blocky and irregular. See screen dump below.

Fixes I have tried:

-For an individual program going to its Properties>Compatibility>checking the 'Override high DPI scaling behavior'>then selecting System (Enhanced).

-From the Control Panel>Adjust the Appearance and Performance of Windows>Visual Effects> and trying all the different presets and various custom options.

Needless to say these haven't worked. So does anyone know what is causing this?

Hi

I wondered if anyone out there has had a similar experience to me...

For some weeks now I have had problems where the START MENU wouldn't launch, metro apps (OneDrive, Tweetium, Money, News etc) would fail to launch (just a blank window up), right mouse clicks wouldn't work, internet browsing slowed up...
Signing out of my windows account then back in again solved it... FOR A WHILE. After an hour or two gradually (one app after another etc) the same problems would occur.
Researching this, I came to the conclusion that Windows 10 was corrupt (or at least my user profile was) and a re-install was necessary. OR I also read of compatibility problems with Windows 10 in my AV software (Kaspersky Internet Security 16.0.0.614) and wondered if the problem lay there.
Yesterday I uninstalled Kaspersky and relied on Win Defender. For 2 days now (unprecedented recently) my laptop has behaved impeccably, no problems as above.
So, am I to blame Kaspersky? Am I safe with Just Win Def? Any other AV suites throwing up problems? Any Kaspersky users with any experiences to share?
Thanks!

Hi, @JP56:

I expect my first, new Win10 system to arrive this week and intend to install KIS 2016 on it, as I have done with many Vista and Win7 boxes.
AFAIK, there is no inherent problem with KIS/KTS 2016 on Win10.

However, each computer is unique.
There may be something about your system contributing to the behavior you report.

First, I would make sure you have fully and cleanly uninstalled any previous 3rd-party AV programs, such as Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro, Webroot, etc. I suggest using the vendor's removal tool, if available. HERE is a comprehensive list by one of our forum experts.

Next, I would verify through the Windows Control Panel that both Windows Defender and Windows Firewall are disabled.
KIS ought to have automatically disabled them when it was installed. But if a recent Windows update or other process re-enabled either or both of those, that could cause a problem.

The other thing is that you are running KIS 16.0.0.614 (aka "MR0").
The most current version (available in most or all locales now) is KIS 16.0.1.445(c) (aka "MR1").
Upgrading from MR0 to MR1 is probably best accomplished via a "clean" upgrade:
Have your license info on-hand, just in case.Download and save -- but do not run yet -- the MR1 installer from HERE or from the local site in your country.Uninstall MR0 from Windows control panel, keeping only the license info.Reboot.Run the MR1 installer > (activate if needed) > update > reboot.

Thanks!

I'm running 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium on a system I built myself just the other day. I've recently installed multiple games (Age of Conan, Spore and Warhammer Online) and none of them have created start menu groups. There were no options that I saw during the installation to request their creation. Some applications have created groups like the EA download manager that came with spore, World of Warcraft, Quicktime, etc, so at least it's partially working. Is this a known Vista issue? What can I do to fix it?Thanks

Answer:Newly Installed Games Don't Appear On Start Menu

Dunno if it's a Vista issue - but it's happened to me on a couple of games.Try posting over in the Games forum for more info: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/20/computer-gaming/

Hello everybody

Since 2 weeks I have a weird problem with my windows 7. The newly installed programs do not show up in the start menu, however when I type the program's name in "search programs and files" box, it turns out to be right there (see attached screenshot).

Also there seems to be a problem with file association in newly installed programs. For example new matlab installation have the same problem as above plus .m files are not associated.

Does any one know why is it happening? Please help, this is highly annoying

Answer:newly installed prog. not in start menu

Right-click > pin to start menu

Can you set your associations via properties?

It's kinda distracting to see the highlight on newly installed programs on the Start Menu. It makes want to click it even if I don't even need to open the program anyway. How do I stop this from happening every time I install a new program?

Greetings. I visit this forum for a while now, just reading on problems and eventual fixes. But since i got my Vista, theres a issue that i wasn't be able to fix yet,so i actually signed up today,to ask a question myself.

Heres my problem.(Vista Ultimate 64)
I have a Admin and a Regular User account for surfing, gaming etc. But whenever i install a program/game while usign the user account,it installs correctly, but there are never entrys/folders/shortcuts in the start menu.
Some programs (mostly lil tools) will show up there, but pretty much none of the games i install ever does. But if i log into my Admin account,i can find all the shortcuts/folders in the start->programs menu there.
Yes,i can create shortcuts and copy and paste them into the start menu on the user account, but i was wondering if theres a setting or option that could fix this annoyance.

Thank you and i appreciate any help.
Turrican

Answer:Most newly installed programs arent displayed in start menu.

Hi Turrican and welcome to Vista Forums

Do these programs/games request administrative privileges to install? If they do, and you grant them the necessary privileges (which you will have to, otherwise they won't proceed), then it could be that you will find the shortcuts if you log in to the administrator account. Some allow themselves to be installed for the current user or for all users, so choose the latter option. For those that do not offer this option, you will have to manually create the shortcuts. Note that, even with the shortcuts present, you might need to right click and select Run as administrator in order to execute it.

Been through half a dozen windows 10 installs trying to get it right!

Im not sure at what point this happened as everything in there from hours/days ago works fine.

I just installed GIMP2 as im working on fixing my busted iphone icons in devices & printers and I tried to click on it in the start menu and nothing happens. Not like the click even registers whatsoever. Its like its not even there. might as well be clicking on empty space on the desktop.

Any ideas? Any services that could be the culprit? I always set to manual instead of disable, and ill be the first to admit i turned off indexing as well as used winaero tweaker..

but so far so good. except this. I'm anal enough that I wont proceed with my icon making until I get this resolved and i will DIE if i have to concede to another dump of windows and a wasted day. Only so much free time w/ a 1 y/o!

Rest assured I know one of you guys will know. Site is an amazing resource

Answer:I cant click on any newly installed programs in windows 10 start menu

So fwiw - it will work after a restart.

Question is, what is or is not happening that makes them unuseable until I restart?

I hope this tidbit makes it an easy fix/easier fix!

If i didnt have killer OCD and pride in my overpriced PC, i'd just leave it and restart every time i installed something. That being said, its a pain and unrealistic and means an underlying problem exists.

I'm sure ya'll understand or you wouldnt be here

Every time i install a new program or whatnot the start menu folder is always empty.
When i right click and select open it says "You don't currently have permission to access this folder" although when i click continue i can access it so it seems it might be security related...
I am the only user on this PC so i shouldn't be getting these messages, right?
And im almost 100% sure its not a virus (tested with malwarebytes) unless its some kind of super hidden virus.
Any ideas?

Couldn't quite come up with a good title to sum up what the issue is. Searched around but couldn't find the relevant topic.
I have the Dell XPS 13, i7, non-touch, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, Win 8.1.
It seems that certain programs that I've installed, the most recent one will start up when I boot up the laptop, even though I've disabled their start up within options. I've checked the Startup folders in the start menu, task manager start up, regedit (both local machine and current user), and none have the application inside.
For example, I installed Teamviewer, and it always started up during the Windows boot, despite startup being unchecked. Then I later installed MacType, and the MacType wizard keeps popping up when I boot into Windows now in place of Teamviewer. I've installed these on other computers and have never had this issue. Renaming the application works, but I do need MacType to start up, just silently, and as a service rather than the Wizard.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Answer:XPS 13 -- Newly installed program auto-startup

On Teamviewer, according to this page:
Disable TeamViewer From Loading Automatically When Starting Windows | Iowa City Computer Service & Repair

I see this note:
Update: 31 March 2015

Recent versions of TeamViewer may not have the ability to disable it from loading on startup. In such cases, removing the software might be the best solution. Then, install the TeamViewer QS version for occasional use.

For detecting all the automatic starts try AutoRuns

Google Android Security: Shielding you from Potentially Harmful Applications
Earlier this month, we shared an overview of the ways we keep you safe, on Google and on the web, more broadly. Today, we wanted to specifically focus on one element of Android security?Potentially Harmful Applications?highlighting fraudsters? common tactics, and how we shield you from these threats.

?Potentially Harmful Applications,? or PHAs, are Android applications that could harm you or your device, or do something unintended with the data on your device. Some examples of PHA badness include:

Backdoors: Apps that let hackers control your device, giving them unauthorized access to your data.

Billing fraud: Apps that charge you in an intentionally misleading way, like premium SMS scams or call scams.

Spyware: Apps that collect personal information from your device without consent

Hostile Downloads: Apps that download harmful programs, often through bundling with another program

Hi,

As the post title suggests, I am having trouble with the modern apps and connectivity. It feels like half my computer will connect to the internet, and the other half won't. Desktop apps like Chrome, Steam, Outlook, iTunes etc. all connect to the internet fine, but any of the Windows apps like Xbox, Store and (most frustratingly) Settings will not connect.

In my network and sharing centre in the control panel it says 'You are not connected to any networks' - but in the system tray, and in the settings app it shows me as connected to my home wi-fi. I am on a desktop, and using a USB wireless adapter. I don't think the adapter is the problem as I have tried it on another desktop in our house on Windows 10 and it worked fine. Curiously also, when I click 'Adapter settings' in the control panel, it shows the wifi connection.

I've tried updating the drivers for the wireless adapter, both through the Windows update and adapter website but to no avail (and as I mentioned, it seems the adapter works fine elsewhere). I've updated manually to the latest Windows 10 Pro build, i've done a DNS flush, I've tried disabling firewalls and anti-virus, I've tried disabling startup apps, I've done a clean install of Windows 10 and still am unable to fix the issue.

If anyone has any ideas that might help that would be great. I'm happy to provide any more information if people need it.

Thanks very much.

Answer:Modern apps not connecting to internet, desktop apps work fine.

Is your DNS client service running on your system .

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.In the list of services, click DNS Client.Make sure that the Status column displays Started and that the Startup Type column displays Automatic. If the service is not set to Started or if the startup type for the DNS Client service is not set to Automatic, follow these steps:
Right-click DNS Client, and then click Properties. In the DNS Client Properties dialog box, click the General tab, and then click Automatic in the Startup type list.Click Start, click Apply, and then click OK.

As well as providing APIs that let developers interact with Google services, and porting many features back to older versions of Android, Play Services has an important role in Android security.

The "Verify Apps" feature of Play Services is Google's firewall against app-based malware. It was introduced in 2012, and first enabled by default in Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. At the time of writing, 92.4% of active Android devices are running version 4.2 and up, and older versions can manually enable it in the Google Settings app.

Verify Apps works similarly to a traditional PC virus scanner:
Whenever the user installs an app, Verify Apps looks for malicious code and known exploits. If they're there, the app are blocked outright ? a message is displayed saying "Installation has been blocked." In other, less suspicious cases, a warning message may be displayed instead, with the option to install anyway. (And Verify Apps can also help remove known malware that's already been installed.)

While the underlying exploit may still be there, this makes it impossible for the bad guy... Read more

if you simple check the Whatsapp it is double in size than the apps in Andriod store.
is not this a issue. it is eating too much of internal memory

Answer:Why are Windows Phone apps larger in size as compared to Andriod apps?

If true, then the app will occupy more space in storage (internal or SD card). There is however no direct relationship between file size and RAM usage. You can't tell, just by looking at file size, how much memory will be required.

I recently had my computer power source die on me. I sent it to the man who built it for me 3 months ago and he preplaced it. He managed to save my old files with a software program and gave them to me on a cd. He then reinstalled windowsXP for me and put a downloaded zipped version of juno internet on the desktop.

I picked up my computer yesterday and brought him home. Plugged him all in and went to install a zipped version of Juno the builder/repairer put on there. I got to the part where it was going to look for local access numbers but it detected no dial tone. I checked my phone. Dead. No power to it even. Went and checked the same line downstairs. Nothing. But the other line (the downstairs one) worked just fine. I called the phone company, they didn't have a clue. So I went to walmart and bought a 50ft phone cord and managed to string it up from the downstairs line to my room. Well, there are two phone jacks on the back of the computer (one says phone, one says line), I forgot which one to use to I tried phone first. No dial tone. I go to pull the plug out and its stuck. REALLY stuck. I had to get a knife and pry the ****er out stuck. It had a burr on the plastic tab that caused it to get stuck. So I broke the tab off. Then I plugged it into the jack marked line. Went to open my Juno program and got an error message that the program had a problem and it was going to close. I tried reinstalling it from the zip. It gave me two error messages, the first one saying s... Read more

I just installed XP over a Vista installation, is it possible to use compatible apps without reinstalling them? For example, I have firefox installed on the Vista partition, would I be able to use that installation (and settings, etc)?
I know I can't use an incompatible program, but there are a *lot* that I should be able to use.

Answer:Using already installed apps

you said you install xp over vista then you say you have a vista partition - which is it???

Anyway, you cannot use any programs installed in another os in a dual boot situation. You will have to reinstall and purchase a second license as needed.

Hi. Not sure this is the right forum...if not I apologize. I have a new (2-weeks) HP computer with Windows 8.1 installed. I have tried to install two programs via CD, both successfully. However, when the new programs check for updates (both say there is one available), I get a message that the update was not successful, as I am not the administrator.
This is baffling, as I am the only user, and when I check, Windows shows me logged in as Administrator. (There are no other user accounts active at all).
I asked for user help for one of the programs thru their website, and they had me doing all kinds of different things: Clean Boot, "manually" download and install their update, etc., but nothing works. They, too, are baffled. Now they want me to create a separate "user account," and try that. But a "user" is not "administrator," and if it doesn't recognize me as administrator, it sure won't recognize an administrator in a user account.
I thought all this was the program/website fault, but when the same thing happened when I installed the second program, it got me to worrying that maybe there's something "off" in Windows 8.1.
Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated.
PS....I hesitate to post the names of the companies involved, or the software I'm installing, but I will if you all think it is OK. Both are fairly well-known companies; not fly-by-nights.

Answer:Unable to download updates to newly installed programs.

Try right clicking the program and click "Run as Administrator" then try your update.

hi i want to know if i remove my all apps and games to m.card and than hard reset the phone... will i able to get all my stuff back from m.card or not... plz help me...

Answer:apps remain safe if i remove all of my apps and games to memory card and then hard reset my phone...

In short, No.you will not.
You will not get data back for games and apps that do not utilise onedrive for cloud save.
Any game or app that is discontinued from the store will not restore as all games and app re-install directly from the store - not from your back up. Even if you have apps and games on your SD card, they most likely will be over written during the re-install process.
To restore, once the phone has finished and rebooted, when prompted log in with the same account that you used previously when you set up your phone.
I hope this clarifies how the back up system works

When I attempt to shutdown or restart my pc I receive a message stating that there are still apps/processes still running. The number of apps running usually runs between 16-20 apps/processes. However, there are never any applications or programs running before I decide to shutdown. The names of the "apps" appear to be names of background processes. I have tried many things, but cannot seem to solve this problem.
