User account info lost after changing login email

Question: User account info lost after changing login email

I recently changed my main Microsoft account login email and after doing so, all my 10 machines no longer show my name on the login screen (shows my email address twice) or in the Start menu (only shows the email address) and as you can see in the above screenshot, permissions no longer show as my login and email address.

Things I've done so far to try and correct it:
Change my account to local login, then back to my Microsoft login, which temporarily corrected it, but then after a few restarts, the info gets lost againManually added my name in Computer Management > System Tools > Local Users and Groups > Users... this fixed it, but again, only until a restart
Has anyone else experienced something like this and no of a way to correct it (and make it stick)?

Preferred Solution: User account info lost after changing login email

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: User account info lost after changing login email

Every time you log on to Windows 10 with Microsoft account, the system will connect to Microsoft's online server for synchronizing the name associated with your online email account. Log on to your Microsoft account via Sign in to your Microsoft account and check if your name is set up properly.

Can anybody tell me how to add the user account logon information?
Specifically, When on the Logon Screen there is information pertaining to the Users Unread Email Information. I have changed to a new email address (because of SPAM). I would like to activate so it sees the new email account and reflects accurate number of unread messages. (I have been helped by someone earlier to remove the old email info...but need help to put on the new info.) Any suggestions?

When you enter the login screen, one of the user account options is pre-highlighted so that if you simply press "enter" instead of selecting one with the mouse or arrow keys, it'll attempt to log you into that account. I've the need recently to create a standard user account, which for some incredibly frustrating reason is always pre-selected instead of my administrator account (the one I use). I have no idea how to change this so that the administrator account is the one pre-selected.

Yea this is a stupid thing to complain about. But I've gotten used to logging in one way, and it's super annoying every time I forget and try the old way. Especially if I'm not in the best state of mind lol.

Oh, and for some reason creating a Guest account doesn't do this. Admin keeps priority. But Standard users are evidently more important than the admin >.>

Hi.

I recently changed the settings on my computer's administrator account to deny access to third party cookies (can't remember how I did it or how to change back), I don't know if that effects the limited account, but now I can only login to email accounts with the administrator account. In the limited user account Gmail and Yahoo wont even load the login page. Hotmail will load the login page but when I enter my password it says their is no connection. Other logins, like here, seem to work.

I have XP sp3, IE8.

Is there any way that I can fix this so that I can login to email accounts using my limited user account?

Thanks.

Hello nice people !

Windows is asking me for a password despite I've never had a password.

Here's what happened:

I've never had a password and choose during the win install to have 1 local account without password.

I used to have a user/login name with an non ascii character (?), and it was causing me some trouble. Hence I decided to change it with ascii only characters. Control Panel, users etc ... properties, changed the name of the local user.

Reboot, and boom, Windows asks me for a password and is displaying the former user name !! But there's no option to change the user name, I've read that there should be a back arrow but it's not here (probably because windows "thinks" there's no point since there is only 1 user).

I don't know what to do, I used a Linux live usb distro to use some tools that can reset password and unlock account, however:

1/ it can only reset password, which seems not to be the issue here, the issue is the wrong user name
2/ the linux tool shows 1 local user with the last update name

So I'm guessing windows is not using the proper name to login, but doesn't provide any mean to change it.

If anyone has an idea, that would be greatly approciated.

Answer:Changing the local user login name on the login screen

Hello Bob, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Double check in Netplwiz to do step 4 to set Windows to automatically sign in to your user account at startup. If you had this set before, then it may not have been updated after you removed your password, and needs to be setup again.

I'm the only user on this laptop and my admin account was called "HybridPC" and I disabled the windows login screen. (Turn computer on and goes right to desktop). One day the welcome screen popped up out of nowhere and I had to login. I tried disabling the login screen to where it was before and now I've screwed things up royally. I cannot login to my original admin account or find it. All the files are still there on my C:\Users\HybridPC folder, but I've lost the profile and user.
I think I messed things up further by trying to create/delete other new user accounts. I've attached 3 screenshots showing my C:users folder, User account screen and the netplwiz.exe profiles.

I've been adding/deleting and can't get back to square one. I don't see my user at all on the welcome screen.
Thanks for your help!

Top User Folder is new today and odd looking as I was attempting to fix on my own.

I have two accounts on my XP laptop. I have the Administrator account and a regular
User account. I had to do some administrative work with my User account so I logged
in as the Administrator, changed my User account to an Administrator account, went
and did my work.

I then logged back in as Administrator and tried to change my User account back to
a normal user account, but it wouldn't let me telling me that I have to have at least
1 Administrator account for me to be able to do this. I'm not sure why it's telling
me that because I still have my Administrator account.

I logged in as Administrator, then went into Control Panel, and then User Accounts.
Then I clicked on "Change An Account". Then I clicked on "User1". Then I clicked
on "Change My Account Type". But then on this page, the "Limited" radio button is
grayed out and I cannot change it, and above it, it says, "You must assign another
user on this computer with a computer administrator account before you can change
this user's account type. This ensures that there is always at least one user with
a computer administrator account on this computer."

Don't know why I'm getting this seeing as how I'm logged in as Administrator.

Answer:Problems Changing Administrator Account To Normal User Account?

Nevermind. I figured out how to fix it. Instead of going through Control Panel->User Accounts, I go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management, and I'm able to make the change through there. Not sure why one method works and the other doesn't, but it does!

Hi guys.

Windows 8 screwed up my old user account so I had to transfer to a new one. Unfortunately that new one was named after my email address for some reason as I logged on as a microsoft account rather than a local one. Hence in my computer its called users/email_000

This is very annoying.

I've read tutorials on this from other versions of windows ie. here : User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name - Windows 7 Forums

However it doesn't work for Windows 8. When I try one of the earliest steps (renaming the user folder itself) I cant do it as its 'open in another program' even though that User is not logged on.

Any workarounds? Ive created another admin local user, to no avail.

Thanks for your help!

Answer:CHANGING User Account Folder names as well as User Name

Hello Chookyman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The best method to do this is to create a new user account with the name you want, make it an administrator account type or leave as a standard user, sign out, sign in to the new account, then delete the old account.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

So I was following this guide -> http://superuser.com/questions/495290/how-to-rename-user-folder-in-windows-8

I renamed the User folder and edited the registry, but then when I logged back into the account, the start menu was blank with no icons, when I moved to the desktop it immediatelly asked for permissions (so it doesn't have them ever for desktop?). My wallpaper was gone, start menu items were gone and I couldn't right click on the Start Button anymore. Usually when right clicking it, I got options like Shut Down, Power Shell etc.

I changed the folder name and registry back, but still nothing works. I also can't run any apps, not even the PC Settings app.

Can I get everything back like it was? I'm on Windows 8.1 by the way.

I'm trying to help my Father-in-Law and Mother-in-Law, who have gotten themselves in quite a pickle. I am helping over the phone so unfortunately I can only go on they says the screen is showing.
They use Windows XP, IE8.
They get their internet through Comcast and have a Comcast email address. It seems he signed on to Microsoft LiveMail and okayed it to grab all his Comcast email. They would like to stop this, but my Father I L failed to take down his logon name, his password or his Windows ID. They are still able to go to LiveMail so I assume the info is being input automatically by their PC. On the LiveMail page they tell me they see their email but no link for Managing their Account. so that they could shange this setting.
So is there a way to find their account info in the computer? Maybe it's stored in the registry, but I have no idea where to look in there.
Microsoft has failed to respond to emails and they do not want to pay them the $35 an hour for tech support.
Any and all advice welcome.

Answer:Lost LiveMail Login info

They are able to change their password, by going to Options on the far right, then click on More Options, at the bottom, and can also remove any other email addresses, under Manage My Account > Send and Receive email from other email Accounts

Question: User Account Info

Hi Guys,

I am running Windows XP Media Center edition. It's my personal pc and I primarily use it. I have one user account created (that is admin a/c) and like most people do I login thru that and use windows.

I wanted to create another user account with very limited facilities. This is because someone else will also be using my pc so he can login thru the other a/c. I know windows xp allows you to create a limited user account but inspite of that user can still modify or delete files on pc.

I wanted to know how can I create & customize a user account that allows a person only to use Internet explorer for browsing and he can user basic applications like MS Word, Notepad, Adobe reader etc. The user can only save files on desktop. He should not be able to modify other files on pc and he cannot enable folder options or show/hide all files etc.

Any info on how to do that will be appreciated.

Thanks,

GR

Answer:User Account Info

I believe that would involve changing/modifying user permissions.I don't have any Media Center versions of XP, so I cannot tell you how to do that...but I can provide some reading material.Which edition of Media Center?Reference: http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-...11-6152061.htmlIf this were XP Home...I'd simply install the Security Tab and use that to control the new account. The Security Tab allows an admin to define user access to files/drives more precisely. How Do I See the Security tab in XP Home (Doug Knox) - http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_home_sectab.htm In dealing with permissions, I would advise against using the DENY column for any user. Rather, I would suggest using the ALLOW column and not allowing any privileges to users which you don't want them to have. I can control all the privileges for a drive, a folder, a file...by right-clicking on same.Louis

G'day.

I'm having a bit of trouble following chaslang's instructions for copying user account info into a new account (as per instructions in one of teh MG support forums).

My main problem is that, at point 14. in chaslang's instructions, I can't find the account that I'm trying to copy. There's one account there called GGG, but none called WWW, which is what is listed under Control Panel - User Accounts, and at Login, and is presumably the one I'm after. The full list of folders in Docs and Settings is:

* 3rd Account (this is the third account I created following chaslang's instructions)
* Administrator
* Administrator.WINDOWS-9782ECE
* All Users
* Default User (this was a hidden folder)
* GGG
* 2nd Account (this is the second account I created following chaslang's instructions)
* Windows User
* LocalService (hidden folder)
* NetworkService (hidden folder)

I don't know how teh GGG one got there (I guess I put it there once - I went through a similar process to this about 18 months ago, trying to resolve the same problem - Reason for doing it is that every time I login, I get a msg saying that one of the files containing registry data had a problem and had to be replaced from a backup copy... the procedure was successful (can't remember the exact wording). I wanted to replace my account as I thought that might fix this problem. So maybe I put GGG there then. Maybe I also deleted teh WWW one at ... Read more

I know this has been discussed before so please forgive me if I am naive. I am pretty computer literate but a) I have just joined this group and b) I have only just progressed to Vista.
I have a problem and it's bugging me to the point of turning me neurotic!! I bought my Vista laptop from "Comet" and I have no idea how to delete all of their information from my computer. Whatever I do the folder C/Users/Comet appears everywhere - hundreds of times in the registry. I cannot delete it from User Accounts because for some reason it doesn't appear there at all - just my own admin account. It will not allow me to rename it (that would just screw up the system anyway, I expect). I want to remove all references to COMET. But how?
What if I took it back to the shop? But would my data be and settings preserved?

Answer:Change User Account info

Hello Graham, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You cannot rename the C:\Users\Comet folder. Changing the name only changes how the name that appears in the Start menu, then both names are attached to that user account.

To change this completely, you will need to create a new administrator account. Afterwards, copy the contents of your C:\Users\Comet folders into the corresponding new account's C:\Users\(user-name) folders to keep your settings. If everthing checks out ok, then you can delete the old account from within your new account.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I manage the Networks for several companies remotely and not all users are computer friendly enough to know both their username and password, only their Password. So, when doing maintenance and I log on to a PC as an administrator or other user I will often
get a call the next day that their "password is not working" because it is using the last logged on user, which this time is me.

Is it possible in any way to set either a default domain user, or set it to a most often logged on model instead of the current last user or the alternative of prompting for user name every time?

Hello.

I've been using Windows 10 for weeks. Until today, it started up just fine by displaying my name and no email address. This is exactly how I want it to be.

Today when Win 10 would not recognize a printer, in order to download an "app" to help with this, I was required to provide a Microsoft email account, which I did (an old Hotmail account I rarely use). Now when I restart or wake up the computer, that old Hotmail account appears as "Administrator". However, I do NOT want that old Hotmail email address associated with this computer.

How can I remove it and get back to logging in with NO associated email address?

NOTE: I do not want to delete the old Hotmail account; just want to remove it from my Windows 10 "Account" menu (My name + Hotmail address + "Administrator").

In case it's required to associate Win 10 with an email address, I use Windows Live Essentials with a company email address. I tried adding it via the "Other Account" option, but Win 10 said it did not recognize the email address I entered, sigh.

I saw threads with a similar question but not quite the same.

Thanks for any help!

My laptop crashed and I am now using my friend's pc. I have access to the laptop's harddrive (it is not damaged) thru a usb connection. I use AOL for email, but manage evrything through Outlook (including Business Contact Manager). In getting set up on the pc I have had to reinstall MS Office and now have to tell it my POP3 and SMTP info, which I don't know. Can I find this info somewhere on the old hard-drive? I now Outlook treats the AOL mail as IMAP files, but have no cle how to get the ball rolling.

I have never had a Microsoft account before but I decided to go with the flow and allow my user accounts to be Microsoft accounts rather than local accounts. But my admin account is strictly a local account.
I am setting up a new computer, so naturally I plan to install software from the admin account and then set user accounts to be able to use it. The Microsoft Store doesn't ask for an account until you select something to buy or download. So I selected a free app to download (Audiobooks from Audible, I think it was), and responded to the Choose an account prompt, while logged into my admin account, but I responded with my personal Microsoft account information. Seems to me that it asked me for account information twice, but I'm not positive. Anyway, the Store now seems to be somehow linked with my admin account and unavailable from my user account.
When I now bring up the Store from my admin account and select something to download, the "Choose an account" pop-up displays my Email address, which is the login for my Microsoft account, as used for my user account on this computer, PLUS an entry entitled "Microsoft account Outlook.com, hotmail, Live.com, MSN". Selecting the second choice asks me to enter the login info for a different Microsoft account, or to create a new account. OK, this makes... Read more

Hi, I would like to know if there are any way to catch and send IP address of someone who login to Such private email like yahoo, gmail, etc. to us ? Is there any web services give that service for free ? or we have to send script or file to target Laptop ? This metoe is important to find someone who missing ?Thank You

Answer:Email IP address from user login to spesific others email

This would be private information that Yahoo/Gmail would have. Probably the only legal way to do it would be to get them involved. Even then, the ip address may or may not assist you in location as that information on the particular ip address may also be behind another services system. If its a criminal matter, I would recommend going through proper authorities.mike

Any way to prevent Windows 10 from changing from Local Account Login to Microsoft account login? I go through the process of changing my login to Local and a few days later Windows 10 says it updated files and the next time I start to login the system has been reset to Microsoft login and after logging in when I go to reset it to Local login it won't let me choose the same User Name. Is there anyway to prevent this other than installing Linux?

Thanks

I recently found out that in Settings > Control Panel > User Accounts it is possible to change the name of your account. However, doesn't this have implications where your shortcuts links etc, will be non-functioning as many will redirect to a user that doesn't exist (because the directory has changed)Example: C:\Documents and Settings\John\Startup Menu will be changed to C:\Documents and Settings\IlikePinkPonies\Startup Menu and would cause all shortcuts to subsequently fail.

I think it might be a virus or malware. I just downloaded some kind of patch to install windows themes. After I restarted my computer, it wouldn't let me login to either of my user accounts. Sometimes it will ask for a password and sometimes it wont but I don't use passwords. It wont even do anything when I click "Turn computer off". If I let it sit there it will keep restarting every few minutes. I can login to safe mode and change/delete passwords but it didn't help.

Hi guys,
I have Windows 7 Professional and two days ago I turned my computer on and type password to my account and everything seems ok and I go out of my room for several minutes. When I came back Windows was still loading, without any error mesage, it looks good but it wont work. I tried several times to login but i can't, I even tried to login through Safe Mode- same story. The problem is that it is my admin account, I have standard user account which works but I can't use my PC properly by using standard user type of account because when I want to install something or change some system settings I have to type password of admin acc, then when I type it, my screen became dark and I can't do anything, just to turn off a computer by pluging out power cable...

Have you any idea what can cause this problem? I will appreciate your help.

Hi,
I have a Windows 8.1 system on a lap top that was used by a former employee. Her name was still on user name and I couldn't change it without Admin privileges (otherwise was asking for a smart card). Found out how to get in to admin in safe mode with Net
User Admin yes- then discovered that the old log in and information / desk top is no longer available. The docs are under Users (old employee's name) in C drive, but the docs and settings no longer show up and the admin log in is the only one available - no
option to change users.
When I went in and said Net User Admin no - thinking if I disabled admin user it would go back to the old log in -  there was no log in available at all.

Help?

I discovered today, when trying to access an Excel file (that's in another user a/c) from my user a/c, that I'd lost the documents in two user a/cs. I often access this one particular Excel file from my user a/c. When I went into the applicable user a/c and tried to pull up Excel, it indicated it was going to install office?? My recent docm listing shows I last accessed the file on 12/23/05. I tried to do a windows restore...restored to yesterday and the same issue w/ user a/cs. When I tried to undo the restore, it said windows was unable to do so. I tried to restore back to 12/23/05 (when I last retrieved the spreadsheet) and got a msg that windows was unable to do restore....same thing for 12/22, 12/21 and 12/20.
Info which might be relevant: 1) I did file maintenance earlier today to delete temporary files (only chose "offline web pages", "temp internet files", "recycle bin", "temp files" and "web client/publisher temp files" and 2) these two user a/cs haven't been accessed directly for a while. The other two that are accessed more often seem to be unaffected.
I'd so appreciate any suggestions !

Hi

I've just got a new PC and populated my files and programs with a backup program. This left me with two User accounts in the C: drive. The old one was a work account that I want to get rid of and the other is a local administrator account. The old work account seemed to be the default so I copied everything from the old account and pasted it into the local account and all seems to be going reasonably well, but I noticed a few things out of whack and I also noticed the ntuser.dat file in the old account was 11 mb and in the local it's only 256kb. I can't move the larger file into the local (and I'm not sure I should anyway), but are there settings, etc in the larger ntuser file that I'm missing and if so, how can I fix it?

Thanks!

My computer crashed. I fixed it by adding a new HD and reinstalling Windows XP64 since I couldn't reinstall on the old one. I have since installed my programs on my new C Drive and have managed to import my address book and my emails but can't find my email account information. I can restore most by hand but I have a lot of email addresses and am missing the log in info on a few of them and it would be very helpful if I could just import or copy/paste the file with that info into my new Outlook Express program.

I have read that the info is in the HKey files but I can't figure out how to get them off my old C Drive (Now the F drive) partition on the old HD.

Anyone who can help me with this?
thanks

Answer:How do i retrieve my email account info from one disk to another?

You might be able to load the hive into Regedit to retrieve your lost accounts. From the little bit of research I've done, you can load an existing hive in the registry editor by selecting either HKLM or HKU. Then going file, Load Hive....

Now the accounts for outlook are stored in the "Current Users" key of the registry, so you'll need to find the hidden file NTUSER.DAT located on your old hard drive under your username in the Documents and Settings folder. If you can load that file...it will appear as a sub key of the key you selected.

If you can load the hive into the registry, your looking for key "9375CFF0413111d3B88A00104B2A6676" in the tree path of "Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles" in the loaded hive.

When you navigate to that path, you will find your accounts as subkeys of that path. Now i don't know if their bound to the user ID of the old installation, but you could try exporting those, and importing them into your systems current registry.

Modifiying the registry is dangerous, if something goes wrong, you may have to reinstall outlook, or worse reinstall windows. You may just be better off creating them all again.

Every time Windows 8 boots, the system tries to login as the last user account that was used. If the account has a password, the user will be asked for a password first thing when the system starts up; if not, the system will directly log in to the user account.
Some users in my house don't want to have a password and I have to log out of their accounts and again log in to mine every time I start the computer after they used it. I'd just prefer to start with a tiled user list, in a similar fashion as it was in Windows 7 (or after you log out in Win 8).
Is it possible to disable this auto-login feature? The only way I found involves the system asking not only for the password but for the username as well, which is hardly satisfactory. Thanks!

Answer:User account auto-login

Hello Ben,

Unfortunately, the only way is to have each user account password protected. Otherwise it will always auto sign-in to the last user account that signed out if it's not password protected.

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit some 5 months back and created following users account :-
User 1 admin
User 2 admin
Guest account standard (default)
Admin (default)

Till recently, none of the other accounts were ever used I was using Users 1 with admin privileges. I have noticed that none of the account including default Guest and Admin accounts work. Upon trying to log it returns with following error “The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.”

I deleted all the non functional account but default Admin account (which again doesn’t work). Created new account via CP with no success. Even newly created Guest Account (default) throws the same error.

I searched the forum for solution and found that I need to manually delete SID key. I don’t understand what I need to delete and attaching the screenshot for perusal.

To recap I currently have just 2 login; Default Admin and created cmc – admin
Help appreciated.

The old Administrator account may still be there, try booting up in safe mode to see if it is, if so log on and try a system restore from there or possibly even deleting the new ID.

I was having trouble shutting down my laptop (programs freezing and such), so stupidly I held down the power button, even though it was accessing the hard drive sporadically. Anyway, I've since rebooted and now whenever I try to log into my user account, I get the message: "The system could not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case." At first I thought I may have corrupted my user account files, but I get this message no matter which account I try to log on with (including the Administrator account). So anyway, I can't get into safe mode either because that also requires me to log on as somebody and thus gives the same error.

Does anyone know if I might have corrupted some file that can be strategically replaced, thus magically allowing me to log on again, or is the whole situation hopeless and I'll have to reformat?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Question: lost user login

I have win2k pro on my laptop. I installed 2000 oh so long ago I don't remember how I set it up.

What I do know is that I set up the user profile without a username (I think) and had checked somewhere to bypass any log on password. So, since that time, when I turn on the computer it just goes straight to my desktop.

A couple days ago when I turned the laptop on I got a log on window that showed 'Administrator' as user name and I couldn't bypass it. I put in the administrator password that I used when I set everything up and while I thought it odd that it showed up like that out of the blue, everything seemed normal after that.

Now, days later, I don't get a login window, (which was normal), but now I've noticed that I can't access any of my Microsoft Office applications (I've got MS Office XP, MS Access2000). The icons are still there but when I click on them, it looks like the program opens up but I get a dialog box that says it's trying to download from the Office CD but it can't find it. When I click cancel, I get a message that says the program is not installed on this computer. Same thing happens when I open Outlook. I can see all my previous messages sitting there but the box pops up and is looking for the install/setup file, then the whole works closes when I hit cancel. I can access ALL the other programs on the hard drive just fine.

When I log off and log back in as Administrator I can't get into the MS Off... Read more

Does anyone know of a way, or an app, which would allow me to have my user account picture update every the login / lock screen is displayed?

Basically I have a folder full of images that I like to use as my account picture, but instead of changing it every week or whatever, I'd like for it to change every time I login, so next time the login/lock screen is shown, it's different..

Does anyone know of anything like this? Or would be able to make a simple script to do it?

EDIT: Ok I've made a script which updates the user profile .bmp file, but changing that file does NOT update the user profile picture if it's a local user (it works for domain users apparently).. Any idea where the actual edit needs to be made / what cache needs dropping?

Thanks for any help!
Chuckun

Answer:Auto-changing user account picture?

Hmmm. I fired up Process Monitor (PM) and was not able to see the step(s) that you need to do to get the desired results. You might want to spend more time on it than I did. Filter PM on Explorer and record/monitor the events that take place when you manually change a user's picture via Control Panel > User Accounts.

The profile bmp that you mentioned can be deleted if this is for a local user account - even after a restart, the user image is coming from somewhere else.

If you really want to dig into this issue - you can run PM from one user account while you log off and on to another user account. PM should show you where W7 is getting the image from for the log on screen.

Sounds like a possible malware infection. Go here:

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download

Download HijackThis, install using the default settings, and launch the program.
Click "scan and save a logfile."
DO NOT HAVE IT FIX ANYTHING YET! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even necessary. Copy the ENTIRE text of the logfile and close the program.

Hi!

I never created an administrator account before I let my son take over my laptop, screw with the administrative accounts so I don't have one, and now I can't download software for my camera.

Now that I've been locked out of administrator accounts, how do I accomplish the installation and further more, how can I get my admin account back and thus regain control over my own machine?

Thank you!

Answer:changing user name and password on administrator account

We can't help you with this because we have no way to verify that you actually own this computer.

I am put in charge of five computers in same workgroup (no domain). Now, different computers have different users. I'd like to standardize the user names and passwords. What I have in mind is having on each computer two administrator accounts and one user account. I have two options: I can delete existing users and create new ones or I can rename the existing users. Which method is better?

All data is stored in D: drive. There is no personal data on C:. Thus, deleting accounts should have minimal effect.

Answer:Implications of deleting or changing the name of a user account

Why would you want to "standardize" user names and passwords? If user Joe has an account on one machine now he has access to 5. Doesn't sound like great security.

Hey guys n gals,
This might have been covered somewhere else, is so could someone throw me the link.

Anyway, I have set up another user on my computer. They have a restricted account. But I would like to tighten it up more. When I look at the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc) I don't seem to be able to specify a single account. Is there another Policy editor for individuals or is there another way I can restrict what a person can do?

I wish I had AD at home!!

mucho thanks!

I've just been having a very large amount of permission problems in various programs, right now I'm having trouble compiling and running the temporary .exe's CodeBlocks makes, getting "permission denied" as an actual compiler error.

So what I'd like to do, and I'm not sure if its possible, is activate the built in full power administrator, which I know how to do, and then rename it to my current account name, or make it so where they merge. I don't really want to have to set all my folders up and such (especially with programs like itunes, which will go off the file path of the username)

~Thanks

hi guys! i am currently using windows 7 home premium 32 bit and having problem with changing size of user account picture.

what it is is when i change the 128 x 128 picture's size to 64 x 64 and set it as user account picture and see the log on screen, it doesn't actually shrink. instead what i am getting is a blurry version still with the size of 128 x 128.

it seems that windows 7 has a fixed setting on that. and i need your help!

any contribution would be appreciated. thanks!

Answer:changing size of user account picture?

Not really understanding why this is an issue for you.... that being said.
The image will always be that default size though, I'm not aware of a way to change it.
Whether you use a 64pixel or a 8megapixel digital camera image it's going to show the same size there.

Hello to everyone!

To begin, please look at the picture attached.

Normally, I must not encounter any of this "privilege" problems since I am an administrator. Before, when I am installing any software, it always warn me about security issues before it begin the installation, which is normal because I set it to do so, and it install it with no problem. Then, after some time, when updating my Java, an error pops up (the attached picture), saying that I don't have any permission to do it. I am thinking that it is an admin problem so I tried to "run is as an admin" even though I'm using an admin account, but I failed. I also tried to change it properties to "always run as admin" but also failed. Now, I cannot install any software nor update anything that modifies the Windows programs.

Upon doing some back tracking, I noticed some things that may cause the problem. Please check if it can help:

1. I change my User Account Name; I notice that after changing the user acct name, the location of files that are saved in Default folders (i.e. My Pictures, Downloads, etc.) doesn't update (example, from C:\Users\oldname\Downloads\setup.exe to C:\Users\newname\Downloads\setup.exe). So, when these files are tried to run, even I use "newname" admin acct, it fails because it searches the setup.exe file from the "oldname" folder location.

2. Upon checking the Users folder, even I changed my User Account name, the folder doesn't chang... Read more

Answer:Installation Problem After Changing User Account Name?

Hello Tephen,

What method did you use to rename your user account name? If in Control Panel -> User Accounts, then that's fine.

Using the above method will you just change your user account's display name, and will not change the name of your user profile folder (C:\Users\UserName). That is normal since you don't want to rename your user profile folder since it will break your account. The old and new display name will be associated with your user account and user profile folder.

Yeah, it's best to install a program with it's setup file located say on your desktop to help prevent access issues.

Hi, i have recently migrated to Win8 from Win7 Pro and am coming to grips with the elevated security MS has dropped on us.
Either by design or accident when i installed Win8 i made my account a standard account not an Admin account.
Following the steps outlined on this site, which has been highly useful, i have learned that the home edition of win8, which i have, is rather more useless in changing many settings that were taken for granted in win7.

My issue in changing my account to an admin account is after successfully activating the admin account and signing into that, the changes i make in that account to my standard account, are not saved or reflected when i log back into my standard (or what should now be an admin) account.

My standard account remains a standard account no matter how many times i log into the admin account and change the account type.

Is there a step i am missing? I am more than frustrated by the lack of ease win8 has infused into what should be a simple process of having my account be the administrator account.

Thanks in advance for your help and please query me at your leisure for any clarity or information you need.

Cheers!
Neilo.

Answer:Changing user account to Administrator will not save.

Try creating a new user account from the Administrator account and making it an administrator. On a clean install the first user account is by default made a member of the administrators group. It still doesn't have full administrator privileges unless you use the "run as administrator" option. This due to UAC and is there for security and safety reasons. Turning UAC off will essentially make you a full admin without having to switch accounts. The true Administrator "account" is disabled by default as its only really needed in an emergency. It can be accessed when needed though. Oh, its not Windows 8 Home, it's Windows 8 Core. And yes, its missing a few features available in Windows 8 Pro. That's why it costs less than Pro.

I'm not happy with MS wanting another email/phone for email access; however, gave them another email account to keep mine.

However, now when I log into the email - I can only get my account info, not the email. I've logged out several times and back in.

I seen nothing to route me to my email when I'm in account info.

Please, how can I access my email?

Answer:[SOLVED] can't get hotmail email - only account info when logged in

are you logging with a hotmail/outlook/live account
OR
are you using another email address
MS allows any email to be used to register as a MSAccount (changes since windows 8) and so you could register with a gmail.com account
BUT
you wont get any email access as the email server is provided by gmail and not MS

Hi 7forum!

This is my last resort, so please help me!
I have after a long time searching ended up here on this forum.

What I want to do is simply to remove the picture & frame on my login screen, only the password, my name, switch user should be left on the screen.

To clarify, I don't want to:
Remove the whole login screen.
Remove password protection.
Remove anything else except for that picture and frame.

Thats pretty much it, I would be really thankful if somebody could help me with this because I'm close to changing to linux just to get rid of it .

Thanks in advance!

Hello

When I booted up my Acer netbook yesterday, I saw two user icons shown on the Windows login screen instead of one. Aside from my own, the other user name was 'spcnywicl' - not a good sign.

I logged into my own account and removed the user in the 'User Accounts' section of Control Panel. Unfortunately it keeps coming back.

I ran regedit and did a search for the above username. It cropped up in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows Search/CrawlScopeManager/Windows/SystemIndex/DefaultRules/7/

The bottom entry was

Name Type Data
URL REG_SZ file:///C:\Users\spcnywicl\Appdata\*

Any thoughts on what to do next?

I currently have Eset Smart Security 6, by the way.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 running Windows XP. This weekend Avast warned me I had trojans so it wanted to run boot scan. I let it run and it said it found a few things which I told it to delete. After that my computer would boot up to user accounts and then when I put in my password it would say loading personal setting and then go to blue screen. I went into safe mode and ran spybot, adware, deleted cookies, temp files and ran anti-malware scan, disk check, defrag, disk cleanup. Still no luck. I have attached the logs below. I hope they are correct. I really need help. This is my work computer and I do the books for my company and can't do anything until this is fixed. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi

A couple of months ago I had to take my HP TouchSmart in to get a new fan put in, when It came back it had a user account called 'test' on it. I assumed the repair guys set it up to test something but I've tried deleting it and it just shows back up at the next login. As far as I can see there's nothing on it so I don't know why it won't delete, does someone know how I can get rid of it?

Thanks

Hi Everyone!

I noticed that I have an additional account shown at my login screen. It's not a user account I created, and it doesn't show up under Control Panel>User Accounts. The only thing that shows up in the User Accounts page is my user account (shown as admin), and a guest account (shown as off).

I'm wondering if I should be worried about this second user account shown at the login screen, or if there was a way to remove/hide this 2nd user account from showing up at the login screen? I'm not sure how it came/shown up in the first place. I'm hoping someone can explain this issue to me and/or help! Thanks!

Answer:2nd user account at login screen, Should I be worried?

Your forum system specs indicate that you use Avast for your antivirus app. However, did you ever use ESET? If so, then please see this post. If not, then use Windows (file) Explorer to see is there is a user folder (C;\Users\username) for this additional account. If there is a user profile folder for this additional account, then the date on that folder and its sub-folders might give you a clue about how long the user account has been active.

Hi,

I created a secondary user account on my PC. When I try to login, it will look like it's logging in, but it just logs back out, returning to the main screen to choose an account to login to.

If I'm logged into my main account, and I switch users and try to login to the newly created secondary account, it logs me out of my main account, and doesn't login to the secondary account, and once again, returns to the main screen to choose an account to login to.

This also happens with the guest account.

In addition, it does not give me the generic error: "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded"

How can I fix this?

Answer:Created user account, unable to login

Hello Dutch,

If you create a new user account of the same type, will it allow you to fully log on to it?

If so, then you might consider using it instead and copy over anything you want from the old account to the new one.

Hope this may help some.

Hi,

i just had had this same issue occur, I solved it by doing the following:

1) in the search bar bottom left type - command - left click the found "command prompt" and select run as administrator
2) in the command window type - sfc /scannow - then hit return
3) this may take some time to run but it does report its progress
4) once finished reboot

you should now be able to log back in as non admin.

I will start by saying I am new to the tech support forum thing, and this is my first site. I am an intern at a company working with a team who supports local and of site end users and maintaining the whole network functionality. The whole network is windows xp and windows 2003 server for file share and mail. Today I went to install a new printer and then logged into the user pc to whom needs the printer. I logged into the domain with my admin account to install the printer driver, the driver had been added to a folder on the network which is mapped. I installed and everything was fine. when the end user logged in her desktop was different so she called, and i checked it out, when she logged in rather than using her account it created user.domain account. No matter what we did we couldn't get her profile to load, we were able to recover everything from the account "user" but I didn't get what happened. Later that day my collegue experienced the same thing but this time the user logged onto a rogue account, what i mean is that the user was no where to be found in documents and settings. We saved a document on the rogue desktop, then logged in as admin to search the drive to find out where the document saved to locate profile, in the end it was non existant. Right after we logged into user and and all of a sudden the right profile loaded.

Does someone know what is going on?

Answer:User account created a clone upon login
