Intel launches Thunderbolt 3, will use USB Type-C connector

Question: Intel launches Thunderbolt 3, will use USB Type-C connector

At Computex 2015, Intel has announced Thunderbolt 3, a new iteration of the company's high bandwidth hardware interface. And for the first time, Intel has ditched Thunderbolt's proprietary connector, instead opting to funnel everything through the soon-to-be-ubiquitous USB Type-C connector.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi folks, I am looking at adding a Samsung 128GB USB 3.0 Type-C Flash Drive to my herd for regular storage,  can I assume to use the Thunderbolt port on my P50 for this, just as I use the "regular" USB 3.0 ports?  That is, once I've updated my Thunderbolt drivers etc., will the Thunderbolt port run a USB memory stick? Or is this port only meant for monitors etc.? thanks!

Answer:Will a USB Stick with a USB Type C / Thunderbolt connector work on P50?

I cannot speak from personal experience, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work. As I understand it, every Thunderbolt 3 port _is_ a USB-C port, and fully supports all USB-C devices. (The reverse, of course, is not necessarily true.) There should be no reason why the TB3 port on the P50 wouldn't support a USB drive, external HDD, etc.I personally hadn't heard/don't remember anything about needing to update a driver first before a TB3 port would work with a USB thumb drive, so please correct me if any of you have seen a place where this was documented. If it doesn't work in your TB3 port, the only reason I would be able to think of is Flash memory of that size, though I don't know what file format a 128GB thumb drive is. If it doesn't work, you can always get an adapter for a couple of bucks. (I just went the other way and purchased a USB-C to USB-A 3A adapter, however, I have not used it yet--that test comes later today, I hope.)

G'day Guys

This is my first post to a forum so please bear with me.
My name is Russ and I am an Electronic Technician in the Royal Australian Navy.
I have worked with computers for years but this fault has me stumped.

Basically every time I try to type a word in the windows search, ms office, notepad etc... a browser is launched as many times as I type.
i.e. if I type help.....I get four browser windows open.

I have consulted numerous techs and all say it is malware.
So I have run the following programs to fix this
ESET Virus / spyware scanner - nothing
Malware Bytes - Nothing
Microsoft Essentials - Nothing

There is one other but the name escapes me. But it found nothing also.

So after much deliberation I reinstalled Win7 over the top. Still happens.
Finally I have done a complete new install....and you wouldn't believe it still happens.
I even deleted the old windows files and still the same.
I am pulling my hair out here!!!!

Any ideas?

My Laptop is a Satellite P200, Core 2 Duo with 3 GB RAM.
I am running 64 Bit Win 7 and have all latest updates from Microsoft.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Answer:Computer launches a browser with every key type

It could be the problem is the KEYBOARD. If you had a desktop system, it would be easier to find out if this is the case.

The only thing I know to suggest: do you have access to a keyboard you can plug into the laptop for test purposes?

Intel has revamped its processor badging and rating system. Consumers are the main target, though business systems will get new badging too.

The new badges include a die (the chip minus the packaging) accent in the upper right hand corner, a prominent main brand (e.g., "Core"), and the modifier (e.g., "i7").

Intel has also instituted a star system that rates chips from five stars (best performance in class) to one star (lowest performance). "So when a consumer goes into a Best Buy store they can distinguish between Centrino, Core, Celeron, Core 2 Duo, Core 2 Quad," said Intel spokesman Bill Calder.

That may be a little easier said than done, however. Some consumers (but not including "tech savvy" Giampaolo, of course) will still need help from the sales person to decipher the badging. A daunting challenge in the case of consumer laptops, which are typically plastered with a hodgepodge of stickers from Intel, Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices, AMD's ATI graphics chip unit, and other companies.

Intel is in the process of moving to a "pretty aggressive brand simplification plan," Calder said. "When we launched Core i7, we said we're moving to a single primary client brand, which is Core. We're moving in that direction," he said.

The Atom processor will not get a modifier. In the future, the Ne... Read more

Advanced Micro Devices is trying to beat Intel on price with its latest six-core desktop Phenom II X6 processors that were unveiled today.

AMD is shipping two X6 processors that are substantially less pricey than Intel's latest six-core Core i7-980XM desktop processor, which was announced last month. The Phenom II X6 1090T processor runs at 3.2GHz and is priced at $295, while the 1055T, which runs at 2.8GHz, is priced at $199. Intel's Core i7-980XM desktop processor is priced at $999, according to a price list on Intel's Web site.

The X6 chips are targeted at gamers and buyers looking for high-performance desktops, said Adam Kozak, platform marketing manager at AMD. The chips are the fastest yet in AMD's desktop processor lineup.

There we go.....that is typically how AMD competes with Intel on CPU's. It's not usually $50 price differences we are talking about. It's hundreds of dollars. And the Core i7-980x is over $1,000 which is insane Now to start reading the benchmarks.

What is the name of the cable that will connect into the small (male) part of this connector ? On this page they mention a Molex Adapter, when I search for Molex Adapter I don't find a female connect with a power adapter.

Answer:Type of Connector ?

Looks like its to connect a fan to your power supply. The small one is for the fan. The big ones are called Molex connectors. Your power supply should have a cable with that type of connector.

Hi all, Just recently got my hands on a shiny new W541 and it's hooked up to my Apple Thunderbolt Display using the Thunderbolt port. While this works, the fans are really loud when i.e. opening programs, new tabs in browser etc. I figured that it's because it uses the built-in Intel graphics GPU. Is there any way to "tell" it to use the Nvidia GPU for the thunderbolt port instead of the built-in one? :-) Thanks in advance. All the best, Bo

Answer:W541 thunderbolt display using intel graphics

Take it up with Lenovo, or buy a dock (apparently that's the solution Lenovo had in mind)!!!

In theory, if the BIOS of the W540 behaved like the BIOS of the W530, then it should allow you to choose whether you want to use built-in Intel HD Graphics exclusively (W530 "integrated") or nVidia Graphics (W530 "discrete graphics"), or some dynamic performance-dependent combination (i.e. W530 "Optimus Mode").  This should be true (and IS true for the W530) no matter whether you're talking about the laptop screen, external monitors connected directly to ports on the W530 laptop, or whether you use external monitors connected through a dock.

The only "wrinkle" for the W530 is that if you have Optimus specified on the W530 then all external monitors are always 100% managed by the nVidia graphics (no matter whether connected directly to the laptop or connected through a dock). So with the W530 in Optimus mode it is actually only the laptop screen which can be controlled by either Intel or nVidia graphics.  For most uses it will be the Intel graphics that controls the laptop screen, unless program graphics performance requirements (as determined by the firmware) find that nVidia is required.  Additionally, you can use nVidia Control panel to theoretically "force" nVidia graphics for specific program windows, but in my experience that doesn't seem to work consistently.

But this very precise choice in the BIOS where the machine actually behaved exactly a... Read more

I have an external 750Gb Toshiba HD (p/n EA05A075CAU3XS) that suddenly stopped working. No indication lights blinking, no activity, plugged into multiple computers, ports, cables with no avail.

I ended up removing it from the case and found a USB 3.0 interface card inside attached to the drive (either HDD2M01 or MK7575GUX for the part number) with a small 18-pin connector (I had to remove the 3.0 PCB to see this).

I haven't seen any signs of the card being burnt or damaged in any way but before accepting the fact that it's the drive itself was hoping someone was familiar with the connector type and/or what kind of cable I could use to bypass the 3.0 card. Additionally if someone knows where I can get an replacement card, that would be helpful as well.

Answer:Solved: Unresponsive Toshiba HDD connector type

Most external drives are exactly the same as internal drives, so it's probably a SATA interface the drive has. You can connect the drive to any computer with an internal SATA port, laptops and desktops use the exact same SATA ports for data and power, and see if it works. If it does then you can purchase a generic SATA enclosure and install the drive into it for continued use. If the drive doesn't with when connected to SATA then its toast. Almost all drives or electronics show no sign of visible failure.

I charge my computer via the usb type-c power connector since that is the correct way to do it. Obviously my computer has very few ports.  It seems a waste of a port to use it to power my machine.   Isnt there some way to use that port as a usb type-c port, AND, at the same time, use it to power the machine.   Power requires only 2, maybe 3 wires.  Isnt there a way to 'split' the port to allow me to make use of the port as a USB port?

I'm not sure what the type of connector is called, but it looks like every HDD connector that i've used (either IDE or SATA, 3.5 or 2.5).

The HDD enclosure's connectors accepts exposed pins that are on the HDD. You can see in the WD site's photo how the connector is different.

I got a used HP Blu Ray Drive. Model CT10L.

Taking out my old DVD drive and physically installing the new unit went well enough. It's just that when I tried to connect it....the SATA data cable was a match. The Power cable, though? Way too big.

So what am I looking for here?

Answer:Wait, so there is more than 1 type of SATA power connector?

If you pulled out an older DVD drive, it may have had a 4-pin (Molex) power connector.

If the "way too big" connector has 4 holes, it's a 4-pin connector. No worries: You can buy a 4-pin to SATA power adapter at a computer parts store or Newegg for a few bucks.

I have a P50 with the Intel 530 video and the HDMI and Thunderbolt ports have stopped working.  Lenovo has replaced the motherboard and they work on the tech's flash Ubuntu OS so it's not the hardware. On 10/24, during the Lenovo or Windows scheduled updates, I see some changes to the video driver.  That's when they stopped working.  I tried roll back but it doesn't work.  I have read previous posts on P50 HDMI issues and have updated the BIOS, Firmware and Thunderbolt software.  I've run all Windows and Lenovo updates.  Of particular importance, Lenvovo keeps trying to push a large "Thinkpad Video Features" update on me but it won't install.  It says it is for Nvidia N16S and Quadro 16P so that makes sense to me, I just don't know why it keeps trying to push it down to me. Anyone experience this issue?  The screen shots show the Lenovo update they are trying to push on me and the updates to the display adapter driver that occurred on 10/24.  Since then it just hasn't worked.

Hi,
I myself own an XPS 15 9550 and noticed that I was not getting the full Thunderbolt 3 speedover it's Thunderbolt 3 port. I expected speeds around 2700MB/s, because of the overhead withthe theoretical gross speed of 3870MB/s, but I only ever got 1400MB/s out of it.
I did some digging and found out that none of the XPS notebooks with Thunderbolt 3 are evenable to achieve the full TB3 speeds, because they are only connected with two PCI Express lanes (x2.3).You can read more about this on the following links:Dell Subreddit PostChipset Digging on Forum

Thunderbolt 3 and the promised speeds were the MAIN REASON I even bought this notebook.I feel very cheated here.

I run some legacy software on an HP Compaq dc7700 Convertible Minitower with 2.5 GB of memory and  an x86 Intel chip running at 1862 MHz and OS= Win XP Pro SP3.
I recently had to re-install the OS (with drivers, all of which now show OK in device manager). As a stand-alone machine it seems to work fine. The problem is network/internet: it seems to be that the Network Adapter registers "obtaining IP address" indefinitely (and a TeamViewer VPN icon says "network cable is unplugged").
I replaced the cable with a new one. Confirming lights on cable attachment are lighted.
I logged on to the (Comcast) modem/router through a browser and the tab for "Connected Devices" shows the HP machine.
The machine itself won't ping. Device Manager shows both devices "functioning properly".
I also looked at SERVICES - Microsoft's default settings - and found many missing: COM+ Event System, DHCP Client, DNS Client, TCP/IP NetBIOS helper, etc.
I'm stumped.

Answer:In Win XP Pro sp3 re-install Intel Network Connector won't register IP adress

First...I would uninstall the Intel ethernet drivers via Device Manager...then reboot and reinstall same.

If that brings no joy, I would simply buy/employ a USB ethernet adapter.  Example..

Because I didn't liked USB 3.0 ethernet chipsets and USB-based ethernet cannot bear some network-intensive tasks, I wanted to use PCIe-based Thunderbolt ethernet controller on my XPS 15 9550. As there is no Thunderbolt 3 "PCIe" ethernet adapter (except docks), I chose to buy Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter and Thunderbolt 2-based ethernet adapter.
I plugged it into the XPS 15 9550 (tested with BIOS 1.1.19, 1.2.14, 1.2.16 and latest Thunderbolt firmware with NVM version 16), and the PCIe device did not pop up. Instead, only USB billboard device is appearing saying that "Alternate Mode configuration not attempted". Both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.10 failed to detect the device. I moved this configuration to MSI GS63 laptop, and it detected ethernet controller successfully (that laptop utilizing NVM firmware version 18).
It seems that other vendors are affected with lower NVM firmware version involving setup with Thunderbolt adapter: see the case of Lenovo too. Do you have planned Thunderbolt NVM firmware update for XPS 15 9550? Looks like XPS 13 9360 is using newer Thunderbolt NVM firmware version, though.

I'm not sure if the port is Digital or non-digital.    I think the Lenovo site specs don't say "digital".  But a review on internet talks about it being digital.  Here is link to that.   You scroll down page for photo of ports.

Anyone know what cable I need to get?
I want to watch movie played from laptop onto my tv.   TV might be HD, but I don't care how movie comes up on screen, just so I can watch it.   What would be cable type to get?   I see that startech.com  sells these things.

Also, I see lots talk here about Audio.  If audio doesn't come through the TV, will it play through laptop?

Many thanks!

Hello All, I have just re-installed WIndows XP Professional on my T42.  The only thing I have installed onthe machine at the moment is my Office 2007, and I was trying to locate all the drivers I need to load back onto my system.  In order to atleast connect to the internet so I can download ll the drivers I need, I was trying to get my driver installed for the Intel PRO/100 CardBus II.  I downloaded the driver available off of Intel's website and have attempted to install it numerous times, and after it installs, it says it cannot locate the driver?  I have gone through all the obvious troubleshooting (uninstall and re-install) and nothing is working.   My device manager recognizes my Intel PRO/100 CardBus II under Network Adapters, but Other Devices section has yellow question marks and exclamation marks on Ethernet Controller and the rest of the items listed in the Other devices sub category. I am thinking that maybe there is a better driver download somewhere or something?  Any help would be appreciated!  Thanks much!

Answer:DRIVERS for T42 Type 2378 - FZU w/ Intel PRO/100 CardBus II

Hi StephG8,Is there a specific reason behind your not installing the drivers from lenovo website?:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-55386.htmlAlso remember, installing lenovo drivers is a two step process, the first setup file extracts itself to a given or default folder in C:\drivers...... you subsequently have to go there and run second setup from there.Hope it helps.

Welcome to Lenovo Community! TerryhohoGo to Control Panel > Lenovo - Airbag Protection > Uncheck Enable Active Protection System. (Check only when you are using HDD and not SSD) SSD does not require Active Protection System as it does not contain mechanical parts.http://www.jdhodges.com/blog/tip-shock-protection-unnecessary-if-you-have-a-ssd/If the step above does not resolve your issue.1. What source do you use to reformat? Windows 7 Original DVD (Clean Install), Lenovo Recovery Disk or others?2. If you install using Windows 7 Original DVD, download and install System Update. (If Recovery Disk, can skip this step as it's preinstalled in the image)3. Download and install the latest Intel Chipset driver.4. Go to Control Panel > Lenovo - Update and drivers > Install Critical and Recommended Updates, up to you for optional updates.

I am attempting to install XPSP3 on a T420 and using System Update to get the drivers it refuses to install the AMT software. I've tried to get type specific drivers but the website doesn't list my type number. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Intel VT (Virtualization) on the laptop 3000 N200 Type 0769-AAP

hi ldzmarcelo,

Welcome to the Community.

If the BIOS don't have the Intel Virtualization Technology option then most probably the motherboard chipset doesn't support the feature.

If you require this feature to run Windows XP Mode, you can still do so by using VMware or Virtualbox.

Hope this helps.

Answer:ThinkPad X1 Carbon (type 20A7): which Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 is compatible

Hello and welcome,

You've run into the BIOS whitelist.  A card must be a supported model (7260) AND have a Lenovo FRU number (04W3844 or 04X6007).  A "vanilla" 7260 won't pass the whitelist check and you'll get the 1802 error.

Hi there. Please view this item
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127063

I am confused whether or not the antenna or cable will screw onto my wireless adapter card.

My wireless Adapter card has a SMA connector on it with the screw wedges on the outside rather than inside with a pin in the middle.

Heres a photo of a similar SMA connector - http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en-commons/thumb/9/90/200px-Gniazdo_RPSMA.jpg

The brand of the network adapter is the same as the brand of the antenna they are both D Link so youd think they would fit.
will the antenna or cable screw onto that?

thanks, jordan

Hi, it's me again.

I just puchased a new system fan. I installed it and and looked around for the PSU connector for it but there isn't one.

The fan has a large 4-pin female connector and the PSU has only 2 large 4-pin female connectors. By "large," I mean that it's about 3/4" wide with holes for pins much larger than those on all the other connectors.

Is there an adaptor so that both sides are male? Is this the correct way I should go?

Denise

Answer:There's no PSU connector to fit System Fan Connector

To Whom It May Concern (or anyone willing to help):
About 6-8weeks ago (guesstimate) I started getting a random window popup at various times while browsing online. The semi-odd thing about it is #1-same type of popup on both ie & my Chrome browsers; #2- I hadn't downloaded/installed anything around then; #3 I havenot been able to find their source; #4- Have not found any scan (malwarebytes, Panda, pcpitstop, etc) that seems to locate it, nor does my Winpatrol. The popup windows vary in advertisers, but most frequent is for the game "Big Farm". They are always fullsized page & open in a new window (not just a new tab), without my regular menu/toolbar, etc on top. I did notice a little icon right before the url it shows at very top, clicked it & got a menu-thing showing the permissions of the settings, etc & I could click to view cookie data (in which I was thinking "yippee I got it", lol)... I can "remove" & "block", however each time I can make sure I do all of the however it doesn't seem to help because in a little bit "poof" it comes up just as before! Of course it can get irritating!
Now, as of 2days ago I've suddenly gotten a new & BIGGER annoyance... Quite often, especially when I open my browser & go to do anything (such as switch sites/pages, open history, etc), I get a blackish popup come down about 3/4 over my page, and has a video box (which seldom starts & if it does p... Hi - for the last 2 days I've had a strange problem where my PC randomly opens yahoo in IE when I'm typing (it's not my home page)
It only does this whilst I'm using the keyboard, browsing by mouse is fine.
I've tried using notepad to see if it's a specific keystroke making it launch, but best I can see this really is random.

I'm running an HP Pavilion with XP Media Centre Internet Security v2002 & SP3.
For security I use Norton Internet Security etc, virus definitions all up to date.
I also have a HP Multimedia wireless keyboard - it has quick access keys across the top but I'm not going anywhere near these.

First thing I checked was the Multimedia keyboard settings - moved them all back to defaults, so 'Internet Launch' should take me to hp website.
Carry on typing, problem started again. Checked keyboard settings, they were pointing back to Yahoo.

So I ran a full Norton scan overnight and it came back clean (bar one tracking cookie which I cleaned).
I ran a Panda scan today following some notes on this website, and again it just came back with cookies (have saved the result)
I've deleted all temp internet files, cookies etc.
I've installed the latest software from hp for my keyboard and rebooted a number of times.

The problem is still happening. I know it doesn't sound so bad, but as it switches focus to the new tab when you're half way through a word it's a real pain.

Windows Media Player launches on its own without me clicking on it and I am not even viewing/listening to anything. I am usually in the middle of typing in Microsoft Word or a Yahoo chat.

Then my laptop goes haywire...
-some type of file extension appears in what I am typing like ][.jspg or something like that.
-i can no longer type...if i push any keys it usually goes to the tool bar in the document/chat I am working on like it is a command key or something trying to open the drop downs for tools, file edit, etc.
-then if i click on any of my icons on the desktop, they no longer launch. What appears is the gray properties box, so I am not able to launch any applications.

This was happening frequently and I decided to use the recovery disk and reinstall everything. That didn't work and I wound up replacing the hard drive (well a computer tech did).

Since the new hard drive it has been working fine until tonight when Windows Media Player launched for no reason while I was typing my paper for class.

Stats:
Windows Media Player 11
Toshiba Satellite M45-S269
Windows XP

By the way, if I shut down my laptop and restart I am usually fine. Now it only has happened once since the new hard drive but I don't think it should be happening at all. I am starting here but don't know if it is more of a Hardware issue.

Any ideas?

Answer:WMP launches on its own when I am not using it

Im having a similar issues but Im sure some is taking care of my issue, someone other than me of course because my effort is endless!

I think windows told me to remove one of the jumpers on the HD and unplug the device, then start BIOS and make sure boot order is set to the HD installation WINDOWS FIRST! I had a HD problem. I purchased a new 160 GB HD for my Laptop/Notebook. I did a fresh install of the Restore CD. Opened IE to download Firefox. Now IE launches on its own with pop-ups ads. I also purchased Norton's 360. I also have AVG Free. They both found tracking cookies that I've had them delete. I try not to use IE if at all possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Richard

Answer:IE launches on its own---Need Help

Hey, my first suggestion is to follow this forum's 5 step procedure to removing/getting help with malware:

Read this thread and follow the instructions: http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...oval-help.html

I also try to not use IE when possible, at one point i used comodo firewall to block the program from being run by any other program. (you may want to look into this, i'm not sure if it's do-able with AVG)

Cheers,
Jamey

It is not a yoga question, but, rather, a windows question. Look here for one solution:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/using-special-characters-character-map-faq#1TC=windows-7Or here if you have a keyboard with a number pad with numlock on:http://www.alt-codes.net/Or, type Alt+248

They are always fullsized page & open in a new window (not just a new tab), with no toolbar, etc on top. Of course it can get irritating!
Now, as of 2days ago I've suddenly gotten a new & BIGGER annoyance... Quite often, especially when I open my browser & go to do anything (such as switch sites/pages, open history, etc), I get a blackish popup come down about 3/4 over my page, and has a video box (which seldom starts to play for at least 10seconds) & below video has a button that says "SKIP AD in 15 seconds" & then counts down to 0, then I can hit the skip button, & it goes away. It also happens just the same nomatter if I'm using Chrome or ie.
Any clue??? If I had an idea of their name or source, I should be able to find some sign of their existence in regedit, but I don't seem to find any indication anywhere including at top or bottom of screen when they open. The two types of popups do not look or act anyway similar/related,

so, a few years back i read a magazine that said to change the type of computer in device manager to standard pc because it made the computer run a little better or faster.

so now i've got my laptop and i've noticed it getting slower and thought that i would do this... VERY BAD MOVE!!!

i can still boot windows and everything - it meant that i had to let the computer reinstall all of the drivers for my hardware - but i have noticed in the device manager now that there are two instances of 'standard pc', there is also a new section titled 'other devices' with about 15 devices that seem to have no driver for them - some mention 'ISA' so i am guessing that changing to standard pc means that windows thinks my laptop is now a desktop pc with ISA slots???

i find that when i put my laptop lid down the thing shuts down, when i press the power button it turns off straight away (doesn't even shut down!). i had had the laptop configured for ages to do nothing when i closed the lid and give me shut down options when i pressed the power button. i look in power options and i can only cinfigure the monitor screen and hard disk power off options - every other option is not available. when i do bring up the shut down options i can no longer choose standby.

i have also realised that i can not turn on my wireless connection - i've tried all sorts to get it to work with no avail! the laptop is an acer ferrari and when i call up the manager app... Read more

My main notebook is a T60 type 1951. The backlight (or the inverter) is faulty (the screen has a red hue, and if I operate it at anything higher than the lowest brightness setting, the backlight just cuts out), and I need to send the machine back for repair (thankfully it's still under warranty). I have a spare machine, a T60 type 2007, and I am wondering if I can just plug the hard drive from the faulty machine into the spare one without any risk of screwing anything up, or of anything not working. I've looked on the net to see if I could figure out what the difference is between the two types, but I've not had any success. The only apparent difference between the two is that the faulty machine has a DVD multi-recorder (Mat**bleep**a DVD-RAM UJ-842 according to the device manager), and the spare one a DVD/CDRW (Mat**bleep**a DVD/CDRW UJDA755 according to the device manager). So: is it safe for me to simply remove the hard drive from the faulty machine before returning it for repair and simply swapping it for the drive currently in the spare machine? Many thanks in anticipation!

Answer:Swapping hard drive from T60 type 1951 to T60 type 2007

The biggest difference between the two is the fact that 1951 has Intel integrated graphics, while 2007 has ATi dedicated GPU. You'll have to load the video drivers if you're intent on using this drive, but it shouldn't bluescreen on you. Apart from that-and possibly wireless if the cards are different-you should be OK. Hope this helps.

I set up an Outlook account on a new-to-me laptop. I had been unable to download email for several months, since I didn't have a computer. I had been saving the emails I wanted to keep and had planned on downloading them into my new computer. After setting up the account, it appeared the system automatically downloaded all of my email from the server. I know this is default behavior which I turn off. So I went through that process, double-checked to see that all the email was downloaded, and went out to my server.

I discovered that what I thought were copies of the emails were left on the servier. I didn't want that to happen. I dug around to find the location that I have used many times to do this, and couldn't remember or find the location to make this change. So I came to Seven Forums. I saw the step-by-step instructions...go to the account, select it, click change, click advanced and uncheck the box that says "Leave a copy of email on server". When I went to the advanced dialog box for changing accounts, I discovered there wasn't any such box. I dug around some more, decided to subscribe here and ask why mine was different.

In the mean time, since all the email was downloaded to my computer, I went back out to my server, deleted all the email, and purged the trash. Then I went back to my Oullook and discovered all the email that I had "downloaded" was gone. After digging some more and callling my ISP service desk, I discovered that ... Read more

Answer:Is default email account type deteremined by type of device?

Hello Hagridore and Welcome to Seven Forums!

No, I don't believe the problem is because it is a Laptop.
Email can be very confusing to setup with the different protocols such as POP3, IMAP, and MAPI.

Referring to "Outlook" can be confusing, as it can mean different things.
Outlook may mean the MS Office Outlook client email program, or an Outlook.com email address.
MS has created confusion here imho.
When you say "Outlook accounts" do you mean email accounts in the Outlook client program, or Outlook.com email address's, or both ?
What email client program are you using, such as MS Office Outlook, MS Windows Live Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, ... ?
Also fwiw, for WEB (online) access, Hotmail accounts are being converted to the outlook "WEB format" now...just to make it more fun

From what I know, setting up an Outlook.com (or Hotmail) email address with IMAP does not work without a 3rd party paid solution.
MS uses their own proprietary MAPI protocol (or POP3) for hotmail/outlook email address's accessed in a client program.
If it is possible to use an Outlook(Hotmail) email account with IMAP in a client email program, I would like to know how!

When I delete a POP account (Windows Live Mail) I get a warning about messages that might be lost...
Did you get a warning message when you deleted the POP account?

edit:
I just looked at this again, and see it's in the Office forum.
So, can I assume you are using MS Office Outlook on all the PC's?
If so, w... Read more

Hi!I was wondering if anyone could help me with this issue. My G580 is still inside the warranty and started showing this flickering lines and areas of the screen that are a complete mess. I am trying to request a service to get it fixed but I am asked for a machine type, model type, and serial number. I found the serial number but the form keeps complaining that it should be a maximum of 9 characters (and mine has 10). And for the machinge type and model type, I just can't find them. There's nothing on the sticker showing a model like it is shown in the help section. Can anyone help me please? Thank you!

Hi afm, welcome to the forums,

have you had a look under the battery?  Quite often the sticker detailing the information will be there, it can also be found on the box if you still have it or on the first screen after entering BIOS.

Hi, I am operating Windows XP and if we are not connected to the internet, AOL still tries to launch automatically. This can be really annoying if you are in the middle of games etc, as it disrupts whatever you happen to be doing. Where do I look for the autolaunch file of AOL? Thanks.

I recently had a problem of IE8 repeatedly launching itself while the computer was idle. I uninstalled IE8, leaving only IE7. Now IE7 launches itself only during bootup although it works fine as does the rest of the computer. I'm sure it is some malware.

Does anyone know whether Windows 7 will still be available in the stores for purchase once Windows 8 is officially launched on Oct 25th?

Perhaps someone can recall what happened to Vista when Win 7 launched.

If Win 7 is going to be pulled from the shelves, then maybe it's time to stock up before it's gone.

Answer:Win 7 availability once Win 8 launches?

Of course it will. Windows 8 sucks.

1 shelf 4 feet long dedicated to W8.

10 Shelves 20 feet long dedicated to W7..............and XP
