Creating Desktop Shortcut To Website When Using MS Edge

Question: Creating Desktop Shortcut To Website When Using MS Edge

When using any version of IE Explorer, when viewing a webpage and want to create a desktop shortcut to that webpage I would simply right click just about anywhere on the webpage and select Create Desktop Shortcut from the drop-down Menu and Presto a new icon shortcut would appear on the desktop.

However, when using MS- Edge, when I Right Click on any webpage all I get is a small drop down-down menu with no selection to create a Desktop Shortcut. Please don't tell me that MS has removed this feature in Edge and I am just missing something or there is a flaw in my system. I have tried every which way to create a Desktop Shortcut of something I am viewing when using Edge to no avail.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Creating Desktop Shortcut To Website When Using MS Edge

I'm with you on this one!
So far the only way I have found is to add the page to a reading list by clicking the Star at top right, selecting Reading List and then Add.
It's not ideal but it's better than nothing.

Another roundabout way is:
While viewing your wepage in Edge,

Click the three dots at top right
Choose Open with Internet Explorer

Now you can create your shortcut as you were used to. The shortcut will open in Edge if that's your default browser.

Hi all,

I would like to have websites' shortcuts on my desktop for ease in surfing to websites which I frequent by using the steps below:

1. Right-clicked on a blank area in the currently visible web page

2. Clicked Create Shortcut on popup menu

3. Click OK to place the shortcut on your desktop

A link to this page was then created on my desktop. Through this shortcut I was supposed to be able to go to that particular web page by double clicking it.

However, it was not to be cos an error message appeared:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel."

Question: How do I create an file association?

Any help most welcome.
Thanks!

I put about ten shortcuts onto my desktop, such as ones for eBay, Google, Amazon, etc.; however, they all have Edge's standard blue icons. This makes the whole group appear as a monolithic bunch of icons that all look the same and not so easy to read. Is there a way to change these desktop icons to the various websites' favicons, making them easier to see/read/use?

I think that you can right-click a shortcut, then choose "Properties," then click on "Change Icon." However, from there, I'm stuck, because it offers me the option of browsing to the icon I want, but I don't know how to get to any favicon that I might want.

It's easy to find those websites' favicons, using Google images, and I can then save them onto my desktop, but I don't know how to get them from there onto their relevant shortcuts. I think there is a cache, called something like "shell32.icon" or whatever, which holds icons, but I'm not sure if that's anything I want to mess with, because I'm fully aware that messing with those kinds of files can lead to disastrous results, such as the computer freezing up, the 'blue screen of death,' etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The program WinsSCP comes with 2 executables: WinSCP.exe and WinSCP.com. I am trying to create desktop shortcuts for each. I had no trouble creating one for the .exe file but Windows won't create for the .com file.

If I go to its folder, click and drag it to the desktop, and select "Create shortcuts here", nothing happens.

If I go to its folder, right click on the .com file, and select "Create shortcut" it gives me the expected popup "Windows can't create a shortcut here. Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead?". I click "Yes" and get another popup saying "Windows could not create the shortcut. Check to see if the disk is full". I have 149GB free so (unless that's an awfully big shortcut) space is not the problem.

Does Windows not allow shortcuts for .com files? I've search but have seen nothing indicating that.

Answer:Trouble creating a desktop shortcut

Hello pokeefe0001,

See if you may be able to create a shortcut of the WinSCP.com file by creating a new shortcut using the target location below. Substitute full path with the actual full path of the file's location.

Dear all,

I have a problem that seems to keep reccurring with a desktop shortcut to only website. The site is an MLS website. The page loads fine if the address is typed into the address bar in IE6 (http://mls.momls.com) but for some reason when a desktop shortcut is used to open the same website a yellow icon with exclamation mark appears at bottom left of screen and there is no functionality on the page. Moreover the error occured recently after pasting some cookies into the cookie folder.

On clicking the icon the dialogue announces one of two errors: "permission denied" or "my cookie is null or not an object"

Before the actual site is loaded a password dialogue is shown both when accessing via a shortcut or when entering the address in ie6 address bar. The only difference is that there is no error when using ie6 address bar after the password has been accepted. When the shortcut is used however, the error icon appears at bottom left of screen on correct passoword entry.

I have two computers networked via crossover cable. The error only occurs on the host computer. The other computer can launch the site with no problem from the shortcut on the desktop!

I have tried everything from deleting cookies and internet files to removing ie6 (which could not be done..imho possibly due to ICS???)...the computers at our office are also running IE6 and also do not have the shortcut problem..it is only the one computer. I installed Java Runtime E... Read more

Answer:Website Cannot Be Launched From Desktop Shortcut

After downloading critical updates from Windows Update, the error resolved itself (I had re-installed XP and had not at the time of writing the topic, gotten round to updating my system from MicroSoft)

This post should serve to provide the extreme importance of enabling Automatic Updates if nothing else, so if you have 'em turned off, do yourself a favor, go turn 'em back on again and you may find your mysteries solve themselves...if not you can pretty much rely on the wizards on this forum to help you out. :-)

I need to make a shortcut on the desktop, so that a user can open it, and it will open a certain directory on a webserver, which contains excel files. From there the user has to be able to open and edit the excel files, and save them to the server.

There are permissions set, either by the host, or the person that previously set this up. I cannot chmod any files or directories, im assuming due to the host.

I can do this through ftp, but the users are used to doing it via http.

ie ... they use http://www.domain.com/directory/excel

and then just double click and excel document, add to it, click save, and they are done.

I have a the user and pass for all of this, but im not sure how this works.

When i type the above url, as the person before had it setup, i get access denied, obviously because they are protected important files. No where in the shortcut properties is there any user or pass, or anything like that, and it worked up until today. Now it shows an error that the files or folders have moved or been altered. Well, the structure hasnt changed, so im assuming its something the host changed, or updated, etc...

Anyone know what i need to do? Thanks

Answer:I need a desktop shortcut to a website that will open in a new window

There are two ways to do it. The first is to go to Internet Options >advanced and take the check out of "Reuse Windows for Launching Shortcuts"
The other is to create a new shortcut to internet explorer which opens the address. Here's an example. This opens This Forum in IE.

Here's an example: (everything is on one line)

Answer:making website desktop shortcut on tablet

Theres three things you can try:

1) Right click on the tab of the site you wish to keep and pin. This way the tab will automatically load each time you use Edge.

2) Favourite the site on to the favourites bar. You can show the bar in Edge's settings

3) Copy the url, then right click on the desktop, select new then choose shortcut. Now paste the url you copied into the box and finish. The icon will change to that of Edge so you will be able to open it in the future.

Hi,

firefox 3.0.4 acts weird:

1)
each time it is started a desktop shortcut for it gets created within a minute (the shortcut seems to be OK, it does link to firefox.exe at the correct place).

2)
sometimes (not always) clicking on a search result link on google leads to google.at instead of the result's URL.

3)
it shows some "dead" bookmarks which contain no URLS or any other information and cannot be deleted.

Removing/reinstalling firefox and deleting/creating a new firefox profile did not help.

Additional "solved" problem:

Additionally to the above problem I was not able to access my hard discs via "my computer" and got the error message "resycler/boot.com" is not a valid win32 operation".

Windows Search did not find those files/folders. "XP-Suche" (german search tool) did: Suspicious autorun.inf files and "resycler/boot.com" folders in the harddisks roots which I deleted and now the dics are accessible by "my computer" again.

This did not solve the firefox issue however.

Spybot / Ad-Aware / Avira did report until I removed those files and don't show anything now.

gmer+dds log files below.

Any help would be appreciated!

Cheers, Peter

PS: sorry for the english... I live in Austria and speak mostly german :)

Currently I have a desktop shortcut to PuttyCyg (a modified version of PuTTY) which I have configured Ctrl+Alt+C as a keyboard shortcut to launch the program. Trouble is, once there is one instance of the program open, when I enter Ctrl+Alt+C again, instead of opening another instance of the program, it brings the window of the currently open instance to the front. This is strange, because when I actually click on the shortcut multiple times, the default behavior is to open multiple instances of the program. How can I change it so that hitting the keyboard shortcut forces new instances to open? Do I have to resort to things like writing a VBScript?

Hi guys n girls,

I have for ever got sick and tired of right click -> open Send to Menu and creating a Desktop Shortcut for a file or app....then needing to go to the Desktop right click the newly made shortcut and then removing the trailing file extension, dash and words shortcut in brackets. If you are like me and you want a solution where you just right click -. Create shortcut and forget and not need to do anymore then look no further.

I have small AutoIT app (compiled script) that does exactly that.

Desktop (create shortcut).au3 SHA1 - 630A9CE23BF669035EEB089C2948BBD8B38BB505

Download Link Desktop (create shortcut).zip

Virustotal readout - God knows why anyone would use any of the virus scanners flagging AutoIT as a virus. This indicates to me that they are merely only searching for header info and not actually decyphering any of the code. That should be alarming to anyone. Anyway here it is, it gets 2 false negatives out of 52.

Hello,
I recently purchased a new Windows 10 laptop, and it has an odd issue which my old Windows 10 machine didn't...

All the icons on the desktop (except the Recycle Bin) are showing shortcut overlays (little blue arrows on the lower-left corner of the icon) - whether the icon is an actual shortcut (just a pointer to a file/folder stored elsewhere) or whether it is a file (stored in the "C:\Users\MY_USER_ACCOUNT\Desktop" folder).

This is really irritating me, since I frequently use the desktop for temporary files (like downloads, etc) and like to clean it up every so often.

I have attempted to "restore" the default shortcut behavior via registry settings (Shortcut Arrow Icon - Change, Remove, or Restore in Windows 10 Windows 10 Customization Tutorials ) but that didn't change the issue I am seeing.

I would like the overlays to display properly - with overlays on actual shortcuts, and no overlays on files/folders located in the "Desktop" folder on disk.

Has anyone else experienced this behavior? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance!
~Heather

I'm trying to create a shortcut in XP that would directly open the "View Wireless Networks" window. The closest I can get is a shortcut to the Wireless network connections window. I then have to click the "View Wireless Networks" button to bring up the child window.

Howdy,

Right click on Desktop > Personalize > Themes > Desktop Icon Settings > Add This PC...

This will make a "This PC" shortcut on desktop, which if you right click on, and choose Properties, will open up "System Details Window" rather than just showing a simple Properties window.

I want to automate the creation of this shortcut by a .reg or a .bat file somehow, anyone can help?
Please note, just .rar or .bat automation.
Thanks in advance

Not sure why you would want to go looking for these files time after time, rather than just using the default settings, but here you go:

I'm trying to create a sleep shortcut in Windows 7, but for some reason the computer always Hybernates instead. I have Hybrid Sleep disabled.

My shortcut path is:

C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

I've also tried:

C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState m2

And:

C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState

All three commands lead to Hybernation instead of sleep.

Can anyone tell me what am I missing here?

Thanks,
quanzaboy

Answer:Creating Sleep Shortcut

UPDATE: I managed to resolve this by using a solution I saw in this forum.

Sleep Shortcut - Create

I just opened cmd as Administrator and ran command:
powercfg -h off

Apparently this disables Hybernation permanently and thus allowing the sleep shortcut to work.

The thing I don't understand is why do you have to run this command even though you already supposedly disabled Hybernation by disabling Hybrid Sleep in power options... ?

Hi Guys. I am running a freeware program called ERUNT. At each days startup it creates a backup of my registry in a folder called ERDNT. This requires that I manually delete older backups. ERUNT gives me the option or creating a command line that will just replace the older backup with the new. How do I create c:\erunt\erunt.exe%systemroots%\erdnt\#date#\noconfirmdelete and place it in startmenu\programs\startupfolder.

Answer:Help--creating a shortcut command line

Put it in a text file with the extension of .BAT or .CMD, make a shortcut to this file and put the shortcut into your startup folder.

This is a really basic question -- I apologize in advance for my ignorance!

I have set up a Personal VPN on my new Windows 7 laptop to use when I'm on public wi-fi. The thing I don't know how to do is to put a shortcut to the "Connect to a Network" on the desktop so I can more easily access this connection. As it is now, I have to go to the start menu -> control panel -> network and sharing center, and connect from there.

This used to be a breeze in WinXP. Enlighten me!

Thanks much!

Answer:Creating shortcut to Connect to a Network?

Hi Emily,

METHOD 1: Open up your Network Connections folder and drag the VPN connection to the desktop (it will create a short-cut automatically)

METHOD 2: Open up your Network Connections folder and drag the icon in the address bar to the start menu (this pins it), you can then click the icon at any time to open the network connections folder and select your VPN.

What you might also consider is turning on the desktop toolbar (or creating a custom toolbar), so that you can click the taskbar for a menu of items (such as all the items on your desktop) and select the shortcut that you created in Method 1.

Have fun!

PS: All basic questions are more than welcome here. It makes me grin like a child when I learn something basic that I just didn't know before

I KNOW that "rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 1" can be used in abatchfile to close WinMe; what line would RESTART rather than CLOSE WinMe ?

Answer:creating a shortcut - script language

rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx flagwhere flag is one, or a combination of, the following numbers:     0 - LOGOFF     1 - SHUTDOWN     2 - REBOOT     4 - FORCE     8 - POWEROFFThese values can be added. Example: reboot = 2 and force = 4 so a forced reboot = 6NOTE: Using the FORCE option can cause programs to lose data.LOGOFF - Shuts down all running processes, then logs the user off.POWEROFF - Shuts down the system and turns off the power. The system must support the power-off feature.REBOOT - Shuts down the system and then restarts the system.SHUTDOWN - Shuts down the system to a point at which it is safe to turn off the power. All file buffers have been flushed to disk, and all    running processes have stopped.FORCE - Forces processes to terminate. When this flag is set, Windows does not query running applications to inform them that Windows is shutting down. This can cause the applications to lose data, therefore, you should only use this flag in an emergency.

We would like the icon to function as an on-screen panic button that will notify the appropriate indiviuals with specific location data of the workstation. hi,

I have never had this problem before as i already have a number of different shortcuts for my favourite websites on my desktop. But, now when i try to create a shortcut an error comes up simply saying Explorer.exe Cannot create shortcut. The icon appears on my desktop, but when i click ok and cancel, another error box comes up saying "Item not found, could not find this item, This item is no longer located in c:, verify the items location and try again."
I dont know whats suddenly caused it and i have tried a system restore but to no avail.
Thanks

Answer:Problem creating a new internet shortcut on windows 7

If you think the problem may be with explorer.exe, why not close it and then restart it?

To close and restart Explorer.exe first go into Task Manager, Processes, highlight 'explorer.exe' and click on End Process. (At this point, you may temporarily lose your Desktop.) Then, to restart explorer.exe go back into Task Manager, and in File section, select New Task (Run). Type explorer.exe (or C:\Windows\explorer.exe) in the Run box (it may be there already). Below the command, it should say: This task will be run with Administrator privileges. Click Okay.

If this doesn't solve the problem, you might try pinning the internet shortcut to the Start Menu, and then right-clicking on it and selecting: Send a shortcut to the Desktop. Once the new shortcut is successfully on your Desktop, you can delete the pinned Start Menu shortcut, if you wish.

Hi all
I am wondering if it is possible to prevent users from creating shortcuts. We have users locked down were they cannot get to the local C: Drive to prevent the machine from getting messed up. But they are creating shortcuts that allow them to browse Active
Directory. "C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe dsquery.dll,OpenQueryWindow" And while I cannot prevent them from reading AD, I want to prevent them from getting to the rundll32.exe file. At this point, they are creating shortcuts to get there. These
users cannot change anything in AD, I am just trying to prevent them from browsing it.
I would block the rundll32.exe file from being executed but with all the software we have, I am not sure what all it would break. Is it possible to prevent running specific rundll32 dll files?
Any advice in this matter would be great.

I have the same exact set up on both machines (very darn close) and Ive always noticed that Edge consumes around 500mb-1GB of mem upon start up with my predesignated 5 tabs.
After the TH2 update on my desktop, I was blown away that Edge now only consumed 30-150mb, even with a twitch stream rolling in the background for extra measure. However, on the SP3 (after TH2) the memory usage is still the same

I am looking for a way to create a custom "string" of actions that I can assign to a keyboard shortcut. I am aware of certain programs that allow me to set a shortcut key (though I do not completely know how to use them), but is there a possibility to set a string of actions?
I want to make my magnifier tool zoom in to a specific level without having to hit "WIN - +" multiple times to get it there. I usually have it set to %200, but I would like to set a command that, in one keystroke, will make it zoom to %400.
I am aware that I can set the amount of the magnifier tool, but this would be the problem.
If I set its zoom amount to 200%, and I am on %200, it will send me directly to %400 with only one keystroke. However, if I zoom out to return to the standard %100 desktop view, the next time I hit the zoom-in key, I will wind up on %300, not %200. When I try to reach %400, it will become %500 again.

Could somebody help me understand the programs I will need and how to perform this action. I want it to be set so that it could zoom to a fixed %400 on the hit of that key. Not add anything additional, just set it straight to %400, no matter what my zoom size is. Just like how hitting ctrl+0 sets Internet Explorer 11 back to its default zoom.
What do you think, is it something that could be done somehow?

Answer:Help creating a custom shortcut action for specific magnifier levels?

Hi, you could write a simple script in Autohotkey (free)- might be 1 to 3 lines depending on the need for a delay between sending characters. Logically it could be

Line 0: Specify the key combination to launch this script
Line 1: Specify delay between characters
Line 2: Specify the character string to be sent

If not already bookmarked then log in to your Bank Account via your webpage and when on the home page bookmark it and then follow procedure to create a desktop shortcut. Once you see it is working then you can delete any previous one that no longer works.

Hello,

I have been trying to figure out a way to create a FTP Website. I am wanting to make it so others can access my "Music" folder and listen to what is in there at will. Though, I do not want to grant them access to anything else. Simply listening/downloading my music.

I have had a friend help me who is good at these kinds of things, and he could not figure out why it wasn't working right. I have also tried to find a few websites regarding the subject, but they where either for Windows XP or the wrong version of Vista.

Afternoon chaps,

A friend and I have just purchased a website and are currently in the process of attemtpting to set it up and create something we're not overly sure how to at the moment. On the face of it our idea is quite simple (without giving too much away for privacy reasons), we intend to take a bunch of videos each day, store them on a computer or somewhere, then somehow users will be able to access and edit these videos through the website. Ok, not entirely simple, but there must be a way it can be done so I thought you guys would be a good place to start.

The complicated bit comes when the videos taken will only remain on the computer for a certain amount of time (eg. 30 days), and all the uploading needs to be done automatically rather than manually. Finding this quite hard to explain without giving anything away! I'll try running you through the process from scatch. Say we take 3 videos every day and each lasts and hour. They're stored on my computer under a dated folder and, for storage reasons, there's only 30 folders (one for each day) so on the 31st day the first folder gets overwritten again and the videos in that folder get replaced (much like CCTV storage). Somehow these videos need to be linked to our website (obstacle 1). It is possible to upload them manually everyday, but we need this process to be automatic. Forget bandwidth and other costs for the moment we're just looking to see if it's at all possible before we go into... Read more

Answer:Creating my first website

click here for a lightweight tutorial about creating user membership facilities. You may prefer to make use of a framework, such as CodeIgniter (which I rate as the best, particularly for newbies). If anyone tells you to use .htaccess, it's best avoided.Regarding file downloads. That's trivial unless you intend to permit user uploads as well. Then it gets serious.

Ok so I've decided to creat a website...I already have a small one using a free hosting (yahoo) and domain (dot.tk)---my website is www.rj831.tk---I want to start building on that. With that in mind, does anyone know of a good (and cheap) host and domain? I'm thinking about using www.siteground.com as a host and going through www.godaddy.com for my domain--total price of this is 65.00 a year...thanks for any advice!

Answer:Creating a website???

Personally, I use http://be-hosted.com

I've had only two problems of thier making - one being a small hack that allowed another user on the server to host files on my domain (nothing major - just annoying and was resolved almost as soon as I told them about it), the other was a DNS error at their end, which was reset within an hour of telling them and was then just a case of waiting for the DNS to propagate.

Both were resolved very quickly using their online ticketing system, and I've found their basic package to be quite generous for the price.

Hi
Can anyone recommend a simple 'idiot-proof' place to start building my website?
I have got the domain name and the site is live. I have heard Wordpress is easy, but after looking at it, I am not sure!
I just want to put a few photos on it and some blogs of everyday life. I would like to have some cartoon characters on it as my child is going to feature on it too (is this flash?).
I do not know html or anything complicated.
Any advice or links would be appreciated.

Answer:Creating a website?

Start with wordpress. Its very simple, yet has lots of customization, you should be very happy with it.

Question: Creating a Website

Hello,

I have been considering creating my own website and have a few questions, since I am new to this.

-What is the best way to find a web host for my site (are there any sites that has reviews about the positives and negatives of individual web site hosts) ?

-When it comes to advertising on my website, how do I attract companies to advertise on my website and how can I figure out what to charge (by the click, size of the ad, or by any other means, and how do I decide what to charge compared to other websites in a related field).

- How can I scan my web page for any type of virus / spyware / hackers?

I am very new to this and would appreciate any help from anyone who has their own website or has knowledge in this field. If anyone could give me any suggestions or even a website that has information in detail for creating a website would be much help. Sorry for my English, it is not my first language but I am trying my hardest to learn.

Thank you!!

How do I pin a shortcut to a website to the task bar?

Answer:pinning shortcut to website on taskbar

Hello tjs,

Welcome to Seven Forums. ]

Unfortunately, you cannot pin a shortcut to the taskbar. What you can do is pin your web browser whatever it is to the taskbar and then pin the shortcut to the browsers jump list. The other alternative is to create a new toolbar from a folder that contains the shortcut. Info here if needed: Quick Launch - Enable or Disable

Hope this helps.

Gary

Could somebody tell me what's the difference between a web document and a shortcut to a website? When you right-click on web links in the start menu to check on properties, you can notice both. When you open the IE, the favorites are all web documents. What's the difference?

Thank you

Web files contain the source html code on your computer. Allows you to edit it.

Shortcuts to websites just link you to the website. The shortcut is basically like you entering the web address into an internet browser.

Answer:Don't Know If Website Shortcut Problem Happens To You Guys

This is a virus, usually from visiting certain Chinese sites
From the Singapore Hardware Zone, this solution may work

1)delete the IE short cut on ur desktop or whereever

2)go to ur IE installation folder eg:C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer
3)look for the file iexploere.exe or explorer.exe.
4)double click it and IE should open.check if the default link is the one u encounter or not. if not proceed to next step. if still that cn website. uninstall ur IE and u can stop reading now.

5)right click and send to desktop to create new short cut.

if u are using chrome and firefox. reinstall them and delete the short cut on the desktop will solve the problem.

what the software did was to replace ur browser shortcut with their their browser shortcut to fool u that the browser u are using is IE /chrome/firefox

This is the strangest problem I've encountered.

I am accustomed to right-clicking on an icon, dragging it to a different folder, releasing the right mouse button and choosing either Copy, Move or Create a shortcut.

Beginning a few weeks ago, I lost the ability to do this with website shortcuts (i.e., shortcuts that point to a website.) Here's what happens:

I right-click on a website shortcut, drag it to a different folder, and when the shortcut is in the new folder it vanishes.

I only have this problem with website shortcuts. My default browser is Chrome, so the website shortcuts are created by Chrome.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? How can I regain my ability to drag and drop website shortcuts via right-click?
