Preferred Solution: Reading a BitLocker Encrypted USB in Windows 10 Home

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Reading a BitLocker Encrypted USB in Windows 10 Home

There was a similar problem upgrading to 8 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2748266 It isn't really applicable but you could have a look.

I'm not sure but I think that you should be able to unlock an external drive on Windows 10 home - just not use bitlocker for the OS drive.

Try starting the Bitlocker Drive Encryption Service if you have it under services.msc

Sorry I can't help too much as I have Pro version...

I just bought a Inspiron 13 2-in-1. Now i see that my OS is Windows 10 home but my C: drive is 'Bitlocker encrypted'. As far as I know the Home edition doesn't have the Bitlocker application. How can i remove this encryption?

Answer:Windows 10 Home Bitlocker encrypted

Windows 10 does not support Bitlocker - only 10 Pro and Enterprise do.
Was this system purchased new from Dell, or from a third party - or refurbished?

Hello,
I have a Windows 7 Ultimate workstation which has data encrypted with BitLocker.  I want to move this data to a Windows 2012 R2 server.  Do I need to un-encrypt the data beforehand or can I just move the data over to the server?
The data currently resides in an SQL environment on the workstation.

Hi folks, Need some help here.  I reformatted (complete reformat with no personal preferences saved) of Windows 10 because of several glitches that were annoying.  I was smart to backup all my documents to an external hard drive that was encrypted with BitLocker.  But once the reformat was complete, the drive is no longer detected.  I can see the drive in Disk Management but it won't pop up in explorer and BitLocker does not prompt me when I plug in.  Help!  My two drives have all my backups and backups of backups!!! I've tried to update all the software/firmware/drivers but to no avail. I'm still under warranty but this is a software issue only I'm certain of it.   Help!

Let suppose I have encrypted a USB pen drive by Bitlocker, Most of the Windows versions have Bitlocker installed and the system prompt for the password, and decrypt the USB drive.
There are certain versions of Windows 7,8,10 like Home Single edition in which Bitlocker is not installed. Now what will happen if I plugged it in a such system, whether it will prompt for the password and decrypt the USB drive or not?

I have 1 partition encrypted drive from windows 7 ultimate, now if i want to change to home premium which do not have bitlocker feature, will i still be able to access the bitlocker encrypted drive?

Answer:bitlocker encrypted drive

My initial answer is no.. Because Bitlocker is not a part of the lower end flavors of 7 and must be poresent. You should decrypt the data first before downgrading the OS

However, with that said,,, there is the policy you can set within Group Policy for USB flash drives to "Allow Access To Bitlocker-Protected Removable Data Drives From Earlier Versions Of Windows" that can assure that you have access to the USB Flash Drive on other operating systems and computers.

I do not know if this will work on External USB HDD's. I have not played around with bitlocker a whole lot,, need to set some time aside for testing it out.

The Group Policy for this is as follows

In the start search type Group an then click on Edit Group Policy

Computer Configuration / Administrative Templates / Windows Components / Bitlocker Drive Encryption / Removable Data Drives

This policy also shows under Fixed Data Drives. But only mentions FAT file system, if you formatted it as NTFS, I am not sure it will work.

and there you will find the policy.

This policy settings configures whether or not removable data drives formated with the FAT file system can be unlocked and viewed on computer running Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Windows XP with SP3, or Windows XP with SP2 operating systems.

But I doubt the data will be recoverable if you downgrade to Home Premium prior to unencrypting it.

I want to upgrade to WIN 10. But my SP3 SSD is bitlocker encrypted.
Will upgrade work on my encrypted SSD?
Will my existing bitlocker password work as I log on?
Any hints to help me as I upgrade?
Thanks!

Answer:How can I upgrade a Bitlocker encrypted SSD to WIN 10?

Should work. When you update, it'll warn you that Bitlocker is being suspended, so remember to unsuspend it when you have W10 installed (through the Bitlocker settings in the control panel).
If you then want to do a clean install then software Bitlocker will be erased. Hardware encryption may remain though, so I suggest you disable it first in such circumstances. I also suggest you do a diskpart clean for a clean install if you use hardware encryption, as Bitlocker may fail to recognise the hardware encryption and try to software encrypt instead when you get W10 installed otherwise.
Have your TPM key handy if you clean install. You shouldn't need it, but never know.
Oh, and make a system image backup to an MBR drive (assuming your boot drive is UEFI and so GPT) before you do anything. Note that the need to use an MBR backup drive instead of GPT goes away with W10, but is needed for W7/8.

I don't know when it started happening, but my drive stopped asking for a password and started asking for a recovery key. I lost my recovery file in a format, I only know my password. Is there any way to just enter the password, not the recovery key? I have very important files on my drive I have no access to.

I have been using my laptop for a while, but no sensitive data stored on it yet and I just enabled Bitlocker with the Used Space option to save time. The files that were deleted are NOT sensitive.

A few questions here.

1. When I decide to reinstall Windows 10 again on the same laptop, and enable Bitlocker, do I need to encrypt the entire disk or leave as Used Space? The way I reinstall Windows, is to delete ALL partitions and only leave the Unallocated free space. That's all. I usually delete ALL partitions.

2. Assuming I did NOT have any sensitive data previously deleted that may be recoverable on the free space, will it be OK to select Used Space only when I reinstall Windows the next time? It is really time consuming - takes about 9 hours to encrypt a 300GB drive...

3. If the Used Space is encrypted, and I decide to store data on there, will the files be automatically encrypted when added to that Used Space?

4. If I delete a sensitive file or document from that encrypted Used Space area, will those documents be moved to the free space area were they can be recovered?

Thanks!

I have a computer with 2 500 GB hard disks. One of the disks contain the installed/active programs and Windows 7 while the other one contains files (pics, vids, etc.) My computer crashed while my kids were using it. Did not know what actually happened I reformatted the computer. At the initial stages of the reformatting, I was still able to see the 2nd hard disk which contained my files which happened to be encrypted by bitlocker. I don't know exactly what went wrong but now, my computer doesn't detect that hard disk and even my cd ROM drive is not being detected anymore. Tried to see if the BIOS will detect it but it couldn't either. Any suggestions? Any help will be appreciated.

Hello,

I currently have Win 7 Beta as my main OS with a non-system partition encrypted with Bit-locker(without TPM). I downloaded a copy of Win 7 RC, but will the new OS recognize the bit-locker encrypted partitions? Do I need to decrypt this drive, re-install the OS and then encrypt this non-system partition again? (I don't have my boot partition encrypted)

Or will Win 7 RC natively recognize the bit-locker partition and I just have to provide the user key to mount the drive?

Thanks,
Icered

Answer:Migrating Win7Beta bitlocker encrypted data to Win 7 RC

Hello Icered, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would recommend to decrypt the drive first, install the new OS, then use bit-locker to encrypt it afterwards.

Hope this helps,

Hi All,

I have been looking on the internet but can't find anything useful.

I protected data on my USB flash drive using Bitlocker in Windows. But of course I can't access it inside Apple OS X operating system. Yes I have a Windows VM running inside my MacBook and can access bitlocked flash drive this way, but this requires booting
up Window VM and becomes frustrating most of the time.

Does anyone know any possible way to access bitlocked flash drive directly inside OS X?
If the answer is "No", then my request to Microsoft is to please make a Bitlocker Reader/Access tool for Mac OS X and make everyone's life easy. This will definitely increase number of Bitlocker users; a win-win situation!

Thanks

Throughout my computing life, I've learned that it's important to umount drives. It still can be seen when devices like a cellphone or a pendrive are attached to the computer the advice of clicking to "Safe remove" the drive before removing it physically.
Now I have Windows 7 Ultimate virtual hard disks in .vhd format and encrypted using bitlocker. I mount them everyday, and I shutdown the computer WITHOUT dettaching that encrypted virtual drive first.
Is this that a problem for security?
Is this a problem for my files?
I'm concerned about a data lose, maybe corrupted files in the drive for dettaching by shutting down the computer without umounting first.

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I have 2TB hard drive with partitions, one have windows installed on and the other is BitLocker encrypted for data storage. I dont know what happend to my pc while I was at work but my pc was restarted when I got home and now my computer only shows one diskdrive (C, where windows is installed). BitLocked encrypted drive D does not show. It does show when I open disk management but it has no drive letter. See screenshot. What are my options? Please dont tell me that my 1765GB of encrypted data is lost :S

Answer:BitLocker Encrypted drive not showing anymore

My first bet would be to make a Ubuntu Live cd (Or even better a forensics Helix boot cd but thats probably over the top!), boot into that and see if you are able to mount the partition.. If you can then I would backup the data somewhere if possible... I think im right in saying that you can still decrypt the encrypted data if you copy it elsewhere but I haven't had much experience of bitlocker, only truecrypt.

My personal opinion is not to do anything within Windows as if it doesn't see the data or partition it may start harming your data.... Good to know my 4 years of Forensic Computing isnt going to waste... I think the above is a good start.

Hopefully others out there will have some more / easier suggestions

Hello, I have a drive that I'm trying to retrieve data from and I have the recovery key. It's hooked up to another Win7 64 bit OS and while Windows sees the drive, Bitlocker CP doesn't and therefore is not asking for the recovery key to unlock it.

When I double click it in explorer it just tells me it needs to be formatted.

When the drive was in its own computer, it was stuck in startup repair. Diags returned a HDD error code but I was still able to unlock in natively to run the startup repair.

Any tips or workarounds here or is the hardware damage preventing me from unlocking it on another computer? The only reason I haven't tossed it is because I am able to unlock it when booting from it using the recovery key. So why won't it let me when it's hooked up to another machine with Bitlocker?

Need help with Bitlocker encrypted fixed drive (non OS ) on primary partition Windows 7 64bit Ultimate.

Drive D is encrypted however from last few days the lock icon displayed on the drive is missing and it is being displayed as unknown file system (Bitlocker Encrypted) in diskmgmt.

While try to open the drive getting error location is not available & access denied , no option to unlock it through right click . Only I can unlock it via opening bitlocker from control panel or through elevated cmd manage-bde -unlock D:
Tried All scenarios.
1. Unlock and then lock it again(reboot + shutdown).
2. Restarted the bitlocker service.
3. tried changing the drive letter .
4. Unlock + disk defrag .
5. no suspend or resume option available for drive in bitlocker settings.
6. Run chkdsk /f /r also, no issues reported.
Issue remains same no icons display for unlock or lock drive , no right lick option to unlock & getting same above error while double click on a drive . However I have checked it still shows drive as encrypted so it's mean encryption is sill running fine.

To install another operating system, I forced to resize my partitions.
I had a drive that was encrypted with bitlocker. After changing the drive and restart I noticed there were only two of the drives that on them Windows installed and another drives changed to free space.
Bitlocker encrypted drive was 100G and another drive 244G. Drives I converted to a drive then format it to restore my data. All the information was not encrypted, was returned but encrypted data was not returned even one bit. I changed the size of D to 200 GB again and after a lot of searching I found the repair-bde command.

this was result.

My external USB disk was encrypted by bitlocker. It worked well until today. Now every time I try to decrypt the disk with no matter the password or key file, the USB disk lost connection.
My local IT said the it can be due to that some track of the disk is broken.
So in the case, is there any way I can get my data back.

Hi,

I have 2 drives on my PC. One SSD where Windows 8.1 is installed and a secondary HDD for movies and stuff.
The SSD is Microsoft edrive compliant so I just enabled BitLocker encryption and set a password, i.e. Pass1.

Later I also encrypted the secondary HDD and DID NOT save the recovery keys when doing that. I clicked smth like Automatically unlock or smth when doing that as the secondary drive was always available when logging in to Windows later. No need to enter a separate password.

Now, I formatted the primary SSD and re installed Windows 8.1 but now I don't have the recovery key for the secondary drive. Is all the data lost or I can somehow use the password to unlock it?

Thank You

I am currently using the Windows 10 Enterprise Evaluation (90-day trial licence). I am trying out Windows 10 to evaluate the Bitlocker encryption and storage pool features. I am nearing the end of my trial period and will need to purchase a license to continue using Windows.

I understand that there is no way to continue to use my existing installation of Windows 10 Enterprise after the trial ends, and that I will need to wipe the OS and clean install (a regular non-enterprise version of) Windows.

I would like to purchase Windows 10 Pro and install that.

I currently have the OS on a SSD, and two (other) hard drives configured as a bitlocker encrypted storage pool for my data. What will happen to my existing bitlocker encrypted storage pool after I wipe the OS (SSD) and clean install Windows 10 Pro? Will the new install of Windows see my encrypted storage pool and allow me to use my password to unlock it?

If you like, you could use the method in the tutorial below to directly downgrade from Enterprise to Pro without losing anything or affecting your BitLocker encrypted storage pool.

To be extra safe, you should backup your BitLocker recovery key to another drive (ex: USB flash drive) than your Windows drive or storage pool.

We have a ThinkPad x230 with Bitlocker encrypted. Laptop is using TPMandPin is used. OS is Windows 8The issue now, we reach the tpm wrong pin threshold and last Sunday laptop got lock and we are able to only open it after the lockout state Monday afternoon. To be honest I'm not aware of this TPM behavior. So the user really want to show me what happen so we reproduce and intentionally put a wrong pin. Now, laptop is still not accessible until this time. The thing is, we cleared the tpm from bios. So even using the correct pin, it tells you that it's a wrong pin.Apparently, the recovery password was taken forgranted and we don't have a copy.I was hoping someone can provide more information on how to tacle this and ultimately be able to recover the laptop.

Hello,
I accidently formatted one of my drives which was previously encrypted.
I tried some third party software as "recover my file" but it didn't work.
Later then, I experimented on a formatted (not encrypted before) usb drive to recover files by same software and it did work.
After that, I encrypted the usb drive and then formatted it. Then I tried to recover by same software, but it didn't work. So, it's apparent that it is not possible to recover from a encrypted and formatted drive by a usual recovery software. Is there any
other method that can help me.
Please inform, I'm in a dire need.

Hey All,

Recently my company provided me with a Windows 10 SOE image as part of a UAT. The image includes Symantec Endpoint Encryption which utilizes Bitlocker for encryption.

I went through all of the motions with the C:\ drive to be encrypted and even printed the recovery key. Well, at some point I plugged in a few My Passport USB drives and they became locked by Bitlocker To Go. Everytime I try to unlock or click on these drives it asks for the 48-bit key which I don't have because I never was prompted to encrypt/lock these drives.

IT says that there are no keys stored on the servers for these USB drives and suggested that this would be a "local" encryption. However, they also stated that they wouldn't be encrypted unless I was prompted about it. So, there's this mystery about how these USB drives came to be locked.
I've been doing some research and the closest I've come is getting some output about the protectors:

Hi there

assuming the drives aren't encrypted then a Linux Distro should rescue you here.

Boot up any Linux Live CD - Linux Mint is a good one. Plug your USB in - should be recognized as an NTFS / FAT32 drive. Use the built in file manager (If the KDE desktop then DOLPHIN is the file manager - works and looks fairly similar to Windows / File explorer). Copy what you need or delete other stuff you don't need.

I don't think there's Windows fixes for this.

To make a Linux bootable USB stick I recommend download this ISO (Linux mint Rosa 17.3 x-64 KDE)

Linux Mint 17.3 "Rosa" - KDE (64-bit) - Linux Mint

Then use (on windows) RUFUS to make bootable USB stick.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Boot the USB stick, plug your other stuff in and use DOLPHIN to get your data. Linux reads and writes Windows file formats.

Here's an example of DOLPHIN reading an HP 64GB USB stick that I couldn't access with windows -

Hello Dears. I had encrypted my drive by Bitlocker in windows 7.
few days after my friend did quick format in my encrypted drive.
my 300 gb of data lost. and nothing saved
i remember unlock password.
how can i recover my data ??? i need my data
i tried drive recovering tools (advanced EFS data recovery, easeus . . ,) . but . . . it's encrypted and formatted drive.
can i undo quick format and decrypt ???
sorry my english is not good.
someone help me please.

Answer:Can i recover lost data from encrypted drive by Bitlocker

BitLocker is not the cause of failed to recover files. Format a drive will clear all data saved on the hard disk. Thus recovery formatted data will be a hard disk based technology but not related to operation system. There is no build-in data recovery feature in Windows operations. So we will needto use third party recovery tool or contact third party data recovery company for current issue.

As recovery missing data service will be expensive, we can also check emails and contact friends to see if that can help get a part of files back especially for photos, documents etc.

I need advices about how can I solve my issue:

I have an external drive. I started the encryption drive with bitlocker, during encryption process,
the drive has been disconnected so I wasn?t able to continue the encryption process.

Now, the drive is partially encrypted. When I want to access the drive, I got the error message
?Encryption Failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion?.

I would like a procedure to recover the remaining data: encrypted and non encrypted

I used M3 Bitlocker Recovery but the tool freezes, I am currently trying TestDisk 7.0. Analysis
is in progress.

You'll find attached screenshots and detailed description of the situation.

I have the passwords & recovery keys

I just started using BitLocker on a Windows7 Computer and am confused about one specific aspect of recovering data drives. I have read through the tutorials on here but I can't seem to find anywhere that explicitly states if this is possible or not.

From this link: Regain access to a computer locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption

I see the statement that "To unlock the drive and regain access to your files, you will need the BitLocker recovery password. If you also encrypted data drives, you will need to have access to the drive that Windows is installed on as well."

My question is if my OS drive dies, will the data drives be recoverable with the password and/or recovery key?

I am not currently in such a situation but I would like to prepare for all possibilities. Since a TPM is needed to store the encryption keys on for the OS drive (I just ordered one but have not encrypted my OS drive yet), are the encryption keys for the data drives are stored on the OS drive itself and this is the issue?

Most of the things I find on Google when trying to search about this issue discuss recovering a data drive that is failing, not a data drive that is in good health but does not have access to the system drive. Can anyone say definitively if this is possible, or do I need to be prepared to lose all data on data drives if my system drive crashes?

Answer:BitLocker Encrypted Data Drive Recovery Question

Based upon what I have read, your data drives will be UNRECOVERABLE if your OS drive dies. I would consider setting up a RAID 5 array for your OS drive for redundancy, this way if one drive dies, all you have to do is replace it and the missing data pieces will be recreated.

Hi All

I formatted my PC to another installation of Windows 7 Ultimate(also the one I had before the format).

Now before I formatted windows on drive C:, I encrypted a folder with Bitlocker. Now this folder was on another harddrive D: on my PC. After the format on C: drive, I cannot access any files in the encrypted folder anymore. The folder is color green(so are all the files inside) and when clicking on any file inside, it tells me "you don't have access to open this file".

Any suggestions?

Thank you

Hey
My company is updating our windows, servers, desktops nearly every thing. we were asked to back up all our data on external drives, but we were forced to encrypt the drives with Bit locker, after the immigration to the new hardware and windows 10, I opened
my external HDD and USB Drive using the passwords I set earlier, and as I don't need the drives to be encrypted anymore, I right clicked the drives then choose "Remove password" which I thought it will decrypt the drives and no passwords will be
required anymore. I was surprised to find that my drives are still encrypted, and all what happened is that the password unlock option for my Bit locker encrypted drives was removed. it now only displays to option to unlock (another USB drive or recovery key)
and I don't have both. all what i have is the passwords that I set to the drivers, but the unlock with password option vanished.
can i return that option back so i can unlock both my drives using password? can you please advice?
thanks in advance.

BitLocker was turned on on my previous Windows 7. It was working properly until I had to change my Windows 7 and reinstall it on another drive, this time SSD instead of HDD. After installing Windows 7, I got "Access Denied" error message when i went
to unlock the drive. The password was correct and the drive could unlock, but access was denied. I tried the built-in Administrator account and found that it had not this problem. It could access the contents of the drive and unlock. This was while my account
was also an administrator of the new Windows. So, I decided to rename login name of the built-in Administrator account to my own and use it instead of my own account. This seemed that resolved the problem. Then, I decided to upgrade this Windows to 10. Now,
after upgrading, I can't access the drive with the built-in Administrator account too!

Notes:

In my previous Windows which I could see the contents of the drive, I was seeing a tiny lock icon on the root folders (the folders which were located on the root of the drive), while this didn't appear on their sub-folders. What is that?
Now and before upgrading, I might and may access the contents of the drive by using Total Commander. This seems the only way. It can't access and then brings up a dialog and asks for using administrative rights. If I click the button, it may show the contents!
why? I'm the administrator already!
Issues like permissions in security or ownership seem not to be applicable,... Read more

Team - Trouble here!! Have ~730 GB of data on my 1TB iOmega HDD. Turned on BitLocker on my Windows 7
system, set password, created and saved recovery key file, and i saw it started encrypting (very slowly, which i think is normal). Left it there for hours and when i came back I saw it is asking me for my password for my unlocking... which i entered and it
just wont open. Goes "NOT RESPONDING". I did not lose power during the initial encryption and neither did i pull out the HDD (to my knowledge) even though I read in the MS content that encryption should resume the next time a drive is plugged in,
it it got interrupted the first time or whatsoever.

However, started my research and was shocked to find several people have had similar problems. Also references that data must be backed up before encrypting (may
be common sense). Well, i have not done that, did not know that a simple of act of encrypting could be such a crime, especially when you are encrypting what you have just taken a backup off - before proceeding towards a formatting of my laptop.

Tried the manage-bde commands and the results are in a pic that i cannot attach. Interestingly, i find that the "manage-bde -status" command shows "conversion status" and "percentage of encryption" as unknown. Is this normal? I
do not really remember seeing any screen (when i came back after hours to check the status of the initial BitLock'ing) stating "hey i am done&quo... Read more

Hi,
please help
how can I recover data from a damaged disk (not physically) of an external encrypted Bitlocer.
Description of the situation:

After connecting the drive - I can decipher it by typing the password - but when you try to open the contents of the report the message "format disk"
- the disk probably has some volume damaged - it has been disconnected from the computer (without being turned off)
What I have done so far:

Using the "Lazesoft" program - I managed to copy (of course after entering the password
on the damaged disk)
the content to another external disk (full - looking after size) but -
this data is encrypted (mainly ending with .ER)
I am asking for a hint:

whether the data that is on the new disk can somehow read (on this disk I can try) [or/and]how to create a damaged disk image to try on another disk [or/and]how to repair a damaged disk (as a last resort) - I am afraid of total data loss [or/and]what other program to use to copy data from a damaged disk
but decrypted
Thank you in advance for your help
Best Regards

Hi All,
I'm hoping that some of the gurus in this area can help me to resolve why my transfer rate to my external hard drive is so slow (ranges from 200 kbps to 15 kbps), but is almost always in the 15-20 kbps range vs. an advertised/expected transfer rate of

5 Gbps.  That's < 1% of expected transfer rate.  Any thoughts on possible root causes that I should investigate?

I have an HP Probook 430 G1 laptop with a Samsung SSD 850 PRO 256 GB SCSI internal hard drive and 4 GB RAM running Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64-bit. I also have a Western Digital My Passport Ultra 1 TB external hard driveBoth the internal drive and the external drive are bitlocker encryptedI've connected the drives via USB 3.0 ports + cable. I've also connected the drives via USB 2.0 port on laptop and USB 3.0 cable.I've checked the My Passport for errors and found none.

I've got an truecrypt partition with what we'll call some unflattering files. Nothing illegal or immoral, but nothing you want girlfriends or family members to find either.

I've got recently used files and all that turned off, but there's one place they're still popping up. If I open the run menu and type the letter "r," I'm greeted with a list of file paths whose existence I'd prefer Windows not advertise in any way ("R:" is where I mount the tc volume.)

My assumption is that it's related to Windows indexing, but none of the elements to manage indexing options that my google queries are suggesting seem to exist on my PC, so I'm guessing they only apply to Windows 10 Pro? At this point I'd settle for deleting the index entirely and disabling it, assuming the index is actually the problem. In any event, pic related.

Edit: So I've disabled the Windows Search service and deleted the Windows.edb file, which I understand is the index. Rebooted, and it's still showing up. I bounced over to my admin account, and it's not happening there. So it's on a per-user basis. Presumably in one of the AppData directories.

Edit2: Solved the problem by disabling autocomplete and deleted autocomplete history in the Content tab in Internet Explorer settings. Ridiculous.

I'm trying to help my daughter who is away at college with her XPS 13 laptop purchased June 2017.  It's running Windows 10 Home.  She took it out and opened it up after class and a blue screen with BitLocker looking for the recovery key was present.  From what I've read, bitlocker isn't available on the home version, only pro and enterprise.  She can't enter the recovery key since it was never turned on, even if it was available.  I told her it will probably need to be reformatted since it's looking for something that is not available.
Has anyone seen this before? Any recommendations?  She's taking it in to the tech center later today.
I forgot to add that when she goes to her Microsoft account and looks at her devices is shows Windows 10 home AND BitLocker ON, although it was never activated.  The "Get BitLocker recovery keys" link brings her to her Onedrive account.  She says she doesn't see the recovery key anywhere on her OneDrive account.
Thanks,

I'm a long-time reader but new poster. I am currently running Windows 7. I want to install Windows XP onto another disc and have a dual-boot setup. I keep Windows 7 up to date and secure, but for the XP partition, I would rather not have antivirus running or even installed, in order to limit background processes. I will not be logging into any place or making any credit card purchases when booted into Windows XP. It will just be used for surfing, games, etc. Further, if and when XP becomes compromised or buggy, I will simply overwrite the partition with a backup image.

If I use Bitlocker to lock down the Windows 7 partition (with the encryption key on a thumb drive) and boot into Windows XP, am I correct in thinking the XP installation see or can't access the Windows 7 partition? If XP gets compromised, can a virus access or write to the Windows 7 partition?

Is there any other reason why this would not be secure? Can a virus write to the BIOS?

Thanks to anyone who can help.

Hello!
I currently have an external hard drive with BitLocker turned on. I did this on my old laptop which was running Windows 8.1 Pro (which is now broken) and my new laptop is running Windows 10 Home.
I'd like to turn BitLocker off on this drive, but without any functionality included in this version of Windows to manage BitLocker settings, how do I do this? I've had a quick look around the web and I can't find any information. I guess I'm going to have to find someone with a Pro version of Windows and ask to use their machine?
Thanks for any help, it's greatly appreciated!

Answer:How to Turn Off BitLocker in 10 Home?

Yeah you can't unless you upgrade to pro or find a computer with pro on it.
not the greatest advance, but you could also try to get an enterprise trial run it through vhd for easy, or maybe see if it works through a virtual machine, and unlock it.
it sucks Home doesn't have bitlocker or simple thing like RDP server and stuff. so not much to do when the computer has home and you need pro features.

Hi everyone:I recently got this brand new Dell XPS 8100 desktop that had Windows 7 Home Premium preinstalled on it. I want to upgrade to Ultimate version though. There are two reasons for me to do that: 1. Windows XP mode and 2. BitLocker.I tried contacting Dell tech support and the guy who was helping me told me that XP mode will be supported but he wasn't sure about BitLocker, because evidently it requires some chip or something that according to him my system didn't have.I was curious, does that BitLocker really need some specialized chip to work, or can it work without such a chip? I'm curious to know because if BitLocker won't work for me then obviously I will not be paying $140 for an upgrade? Thanks in advance!

Answer:From Home Premium to Ultimate - BitLocker?

If dell sells that computer with that upgrade (and it seems that they do) then it is fully supported.I think it would help to have the chip but not needed to encrypt the disk. Why do you need such drive encryption? Would a third party software do as well? You would in fact get the xp mode in the fee. It really is like a xp and VM in one bundle.I support the 'Everybody Draw Mohammed Day'. Not sure where to post this, but...

I?m currently awaiting a TPM module for my PC. Will use it in conjunction with BitLocker.

Question, if I encrypt my drive, as long as I?m logged in to the encrypted PC, I assume I can still transfer files and folders between encrypted and non-encrypted drives without issue?

Also, any performance issues with encrypted drives?

Thanks.

Greetings,

Only 2 tweeks were ever done to my OS WinXP SP2, Under "Performance Options" I changed "Visual Effects" to "Adjust for Best Performance", and also I added paging files to drive "C" and "D" setting them on "System Managed Size".

My problem is memory/OS related... I've been running this PC with 1 gig [2-512Mb] of dual 266MHz DDR PC2100 DIM CL2.5 of RAM. Recently I started doing a lot of graphics work on very large files and kept running out of memory.

I removed 2-512 Mb boards and replaced with 4 matched, tested, 1 gig boards increasing my PC to 4 gigs. But it seems WinXP w/Service Pack 2 is having a problem seeing and allocating the 4 gigs, because I don't see the entire 4gigs in several places of my PC and I see less then 3gigs in available memory. With "Systems > Performance" running I noticed that when the window pops-up up saying ''insufficient memory'', there is still plenty of gigs of available memory left.
BELOW: CMOS shows the 4+gigs installed, "System Performance" only shows 3.37 gigs, "Task Manager" only shows 3.53 gigs, While "System Information" shows 4.09gigs with only 2.87gig available. I also included a copy of my "boot.ini" folder since it's talked about a lot with WinXP and memory. After that you will find I change my boot.ini file but it did not change any reading in my OS.

Could someone give me a... Read more

This is the story, i recently purchased an external hdd, and i want it to be able to connect to it all around this house through the network, it worked for a while and then i was forced to reformat and im trying to set it up again but it doesn't seem to recognize my laptop or my brother's desktop, yet it recongnizes my mom's desktop. I've tried numerously to redo the network wizard but still no luck, my network is connected through the 2wire home portal 1000s, it uses HPNA technology, and it is cascaded with a linksys wrt54gs. also, what is the advantages of bridging your connections?

Answer:Setting up a new home network ( even after reading the faq)

What do you mean by "recognize"? Sounds like a permissions problem on the HD as a share.

Bridging isnt really an advantage... Its more of a specific solution for a specific need.

My wife and I have been looking for our first house since March. We never saw any resells we loved within budget but found an area we both fell in love with that is doing new construction within our budget.

The builder gave us a list of standard features and it does list structured wiring with Telephone and Cable, doesn't specify but most others in the neighborhood are doing Cat5E for phone and RG-6 for cable.

I was wondering if anybody could point me into the right direction for any readings or videos on what to expect from structured wiring.

Ideally I am going to talk to him adding a second and possibly third drop in some locations. Also might be interested in doing Cat6 if there's a big enough difference or a "future-proof" reason for doing so, while of course not adding too much greater of a cost. Definitely would like the hard lines for places that may use them even in the near future, televisions in master suite and living room, extra bedrooms for children in the future, etc. So it can't hurt resell opportunities to have them done during construction and I've heard it's rather expensive to have it done after the fact.

Answer:Any good reading on home structured wiring?

This is a few years old, but I can't imagine much has changed since then.

I have an older Laptop that operates on  Windows 7 Ultimate,I have the Bitlocker Drive Encryption on and encrypted for Drive C:   I now started the process of encrypting my external usb hdd Drive E: which has a long way to go for it's large
size. During the encryption I needed to disconnect it so I paused the encryption like it says to do before removing or changing any files on it. I then plugged my drive into a newer laptop I have that operates on Windows 10,. I was prompted for the Bitlocker
Drive Encryption Password screen like normal just like on my Windows 7 laptop so I enter the password and it was correct and it began the encryption process again. When I finished with what I needed to do on the Windows 10 laptop I paused the encryption again
and disconnected the drive. I am now back on my Windows 7 Ultimate OS and plugged the drive in, Bitlocker Encryption Password Screen comes up again and I entered my password but now for some reason it's saying the password is incorrect?  "But It's
not incorrect",is there a reason why this has happen and a way to fix it? My second issue is that I have the recovery key written down on paper but on the fifth line of the eight lines that makes the recovery key I left out a number, did not write it correctly,
there for I cannot just reset my password using the key and get back to normal again. Any way to find the lost number to the key? As I do have the rest of it written correctly please help tha... Read more

Hi
After rebooting one of our test machines, bitlocker wanted the recovery key.
There were no hardware modifications on that machine.
Error message in event log:
Bootmgr failed to obtain the bitlocker volume master key from the TPM because the PCRs did not match
Event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver
Each time the machine starts, the recovery key is needed.
Any idea how to solve that issue and why it happens?
update:
Second partition was created manually on that machine. So that's clear that bitlocker reacts...
But now: how can I confirm those changes so that the recovery key is not needed each time we boot?

Answer:Bitlocker enabled drive, recovery key needed during boot, PCS did not match, event id 24635, source bitlocker-driver

Hi,

I would like to confirm if BitLocker accepts the recovery key?

Please update the BIOS to improve the stability for TPM first.

I also would like to suggest you disable and enable BitLocker again to reset the settings.

Hello to all. I saw this topic dating back to 2006 but it seemed that at that time the drives were not working, were stopping. That is not my issue. Before suggested, I have tried what was recommended then, uninstalling the drive and removing lower and upper in the registry (sorry cannot remember what they were).

Ok, here is what I have and what it has been doing for over a year. I have a Sony Vaio laptop, CR120E, Vista. Over a year ago, it just stopped reading home made disks. My daughter's wedding disk, the disk of my X rays from the Doctor, music, regardless, when put in they were seen as blank. Sometimes if I kept putting them in, they would be recognized, but mostly not. I got a cdrom cleaner, used it and it seemed to work for a good while. However, it is doing it again. If I burned the disk on this system before, it would read it but I am not sure if that is the case now. It makes me crazy. I went and got a new cleaner, and have done all that I know to do. Sony, you suck. Too many ppl have had this problem. My next laptop will NOT be a Sony.

So, if I put a commercial cd or dvd in, it works fine. Any suggestions? Can I clean this sucker any other way?

Answer:Sony Vaio DVD ROM stopped reading home made CDs and DVDs

In any CD/DVD RW drive, there are 2 'lasers'. One is for reading, the other for writing.
From what you have said, it sounds as if the 'writing' head has lost power, or is failing in some way.
So when you use a commercial DVD it reads perfectly, but when you try to load from the DVD's you burned on that drive, it is unreliable.
The only real answer is to buy a new CD/DVD drive unit. It's very easy to fit, and not very expensive either. I have found also that some CD/DVD drives seem to read 'bought' discs better than others, maybe some alignment differences between manufacturers ?
When you get a new drive installed, you can make new copies of the unreliable discs.
If you don't like the idea of taking the drive out, you can buy a stand-alone CD/DVD RW that will plug into (usually 2) USB ports. Not good on a laptop ! There are some that will use only 1 USB port though. Hope that's of help.
* This is one I have, but be aware that the read/write speed is only X8 on DVD.

I tried using HP BIOS Flashing utility on my HP Z400 Workstation, and it says it can't continue because I have Bitlocker enabled, but I don't have bitlocker on Win 7 Professional 32bit. I don't see it on the control panel or in context menus. I do see it set to manual in "Services" but the service in not running. Is there a way to find drives Bitlocked or are my drives being treated as bitlocked because of my antivirus program AVG?

Answer:BIOS flash error, BITLOCKER on? No bitlocker installed, Win 7 Pro

In the services window is there and option to disable or turn off...there should be. Just change the startup type from manual to disable and reboot. Then try your BIOS update.

Hello and good afternoon, I have a issue where a manager started the Bitlocker process on the SD card in his Surface Pro 3

with Windows 8.1. The Bitlocker attempt failed at 3.4% completed but the SD card ended up being Bitlocked without providing the Bitlocker Recovery Key (I've never seen this happen before). He doesn't know the password for the SD card and of course
I've been tasked to somehow release the encryption so that he can get the required information off of the SD card.

Is there anything that can be done to release the encryption on the SD card or has the SD card been made non-accessible moving forward?

I turned on Bitlocker on three new Windows 8.1 laptops and saved the 48-digit recovery keys and associated identifiers, but I forgot to indicate which laptops they are associated with. Is there any way to find the identifiers/recovery keys on my laptops so I can document this? Or do I have to decrypt the laptop drives, turn off Bitlocker, and start all over again to generate new identifiers/recovery keys? My only options under Manage Bitlocker are Suspend protection, Back up your recovery key, and Turn off BitLocker.

Answer:BitLocker Identifier generated after turning on Bitlocker

Hello Edwin, and welcome to Eight Forums.

No worries. If you should ever need to unlock to drive, it'll provide you with a recovery key ID number that you can use to ID which recovery key to use. The tutorial below can give you more details about this to help get an idea if ever needed.
