Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons

Question: Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons

Hello! So I just signed up here because I'm desperate and don't know what to do.

So basically, I thought the windows 10 default folder icons were pretty bland and ugly so I decided to change them. I read that you could change your default icons by going into to registry and I did just that. Long story short, it didn't work so i deleted the registry folder that I had just created, like they said you could. I was very careful (or so I think) to not touch anything else

But now I'm worried I might have messed up somewhere because now I can't change icons for some of the folders I use. Not sure if this was a problem before that I didn't notice or if it's due to me messing around with things I don't understand.

As things are now, I can change icons for folders that I created but the folders that came with the system (like documents, music, movies, downloads etc) I'm currently unable to change. The thing is, I was able to change the folder icons just a while ago, so I changed them all by right clicking on the folder, choosing properties and then changing the icon, and that worked fine. Then I decided to just use the default icons anyway but I was only able to switch back some of them, and some of those now had the wrong folder icon. My "downloads" folder is just a blank white space for example and I'm unable to change it.

To show an example (I'm sorry the text is in swedish I hope you can somewhat understand):

Properties for an ordinary folder:
Properties for my music folder: Just a blank space where the "switch icon" should be!
I have tried to reboot my computer, I have tried top reset my icon cache, nothing seems to work. Does anyone know what I should do? I'm pretty much just ready to reset my whole system, but I'd prefer if I didn't have to. Any help is appreciated!

Preferred Solution: Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons

Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.

First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?

Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.

Please advise.

If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.

1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?

2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.

Please post back and advise on these points.

I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

Images also act as a full backup- you can extract files too.

You can even use images to help you move more easily and quickly to a new PC.

Imaging can even help you sleep at night knowing you have a second chance.

Many here recommend Macrium Reflect (free) as a good robust solution and more reliable than some others. It?s
- more feature rich
- more flexible
- more reliable
than Windows Backup and Restore system images.

It's well supported with videos, help and a responsive forum.

I have two icons that I want to assign to two folders. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong. Let me explain what happened step by step:

1. I have two folders: "A" and "B".
2. I have two icons (.ico files): "A" and "B".
3. I place icon "A" in folder "A" and icon "B" in folder "B".
4. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
5. I notice that I've switched the icons around.
6. I move icon "A" to folder "B" and icon "B" to folder "A".
7. I rename icon "A" to "B" and icon "B" to "A".
8. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
9. I notice that I still get to see the switched-around icons that I assigned in step 4 in the large and extra large icon views. In the smaller views the folder icons are now correct.

Here's what I did to try solve this problem:

- Follow two tutorials: Icon Cache - Rebuild and Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 (for .ico files).
- Remove the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Run "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f /r".
- Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry and manually remove some registry keys that I pinpointed by looking for the registry keys that change when I assign an icon to a folder.
- Restart the computer and the "explorer.exe&... Read more

I recently had to do a fresh reinstall of Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit, & am now having problems changing any folder's image in the customary way (Properties >> Customize >> Choose File (to show on this folder icon)). After choosing & opening a file image, I "Apply" & click "OK". However, the selected image does not show up immediately as before (& as it should). I now have to add an empty "TEST" folder to the folder whose image I'm trying to change. Once this "TEST" folder has been added, the new image appears (sometimes I need to re-boot), & I can then delete the empty "TEST" folder. Furthermore, this method can be inconsistent, & a folder may revert to another image (especially in my backup drive). I have attached 2 screenshots of my Folder Options. Any help/recommendations to solve this maddening problem would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Answer:Unable to change folder icons

as its an image you want to show in the folder and not actually change the folder icon to a different one.
then rename the image inside the folder to "folder", it will show then ,or at least it should, this is only a workaround im afraid and doesnt really answer your problem, i wonder if rebuilding the icons cache may help

Can change folder and shortcut icons with XP features, but is there an XP feature or 3rd party software package (possibly freeware) that can change (all extension types) file icons ?
Am looking at shareware (about $20) 'IconChanger 3.7' but not sure what file extensions it can work with (have emailed IC tech support for that list, but have not yet heard back).
Any ideas ?

Answer:How to change file/s icons in addition to folder & shortcut icons ???

I've found a couple of free ones. There's the XP Transformation Pack which will make XP look like Vista (I think). I have another one, but I can't remember what it's called or where I downloaded it from. I think I have the info at home (I'm at work right know) and if I find it, I'll be sure to post it...

Edit: here's one I found whilst Googling. It's an icon pack for about 30 or 40 different extensions....
http://interfacelift.com/icons-win/details.php?id=1928 Their home page provides access to a bunch of other icons... check it out.. If you're interested in making your own icons, there's lots of tools out there. The free ones are OK but usually limited in features. IconCool is one of the better ones, but it's not free. I Googled "XP icons" and found lots of stuff...

Edit #2: if you have seen icons already on your PC that you'd like to extract for personal use, use IconSnatcher. It will look inside EXE files and DLL files (and lots of others) http://www.snapfiles.com/get/iconsnatcher.html

I've been tinkering with the look of my whole system recently. I didn't like the default theme or the folder icons. Now with the help of SevenForums article How to change default folder icons: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...lder-icon.html. It was a very handy article that got me quite far and the same principles applied to Win10 as it did on 7

I've been able to change only a few of the default folders. Now as I'm fairly average at tinkering I've done what the article said on my 10 machine with some success as shown below:

However the live folders do not update despite editing both the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons AND the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons Registry locations. This met with the above result after a restart. Below you can see what I did to the registry:

As you can see from the registry paths I replaced 3, 4, 5 (back), 6 (front) and 162 (full). But 5, 6 and 162 have not updated at all.

So Am I missing something or is there no way to alter these types of folders? Including but not limited to such as the Fonts folder icon, live folders, full folders or folders containing data of one form or another for example:

Any thoughts, help or suggestions would be appreciated, and if this article happens to already exist somewhere I do apologise for cluttering the forum up here as I've not been able to find anything specific so far.

Hi all
(I'm italian, excuse me for my bad english).
I have a pc with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I have a problem with some icons on taskbar: sometimes some applications are displaying the wrong icons, sometimes, as you can see (screenshot), I don't see some icons: sometimes a few are missing (this time I have 8 icons of about 20!).

If I restart my pc, some icons return, but many still missing or are wrong!

So I launched this tool from microsof (I think it rebuilt icon cache, but I'm not sure): In Windows le icone vengono modificate in modo non corretto
but it doesnt' fix the problem, see this screenshot after using this tool from microsoft:

now as you can see some applications are displaying the wrong icons and 2 icons are still missing ...is there any fix for this problem? thanks!!

Vittorio.

Answer:problem with icons on taskbar (wrong icons or missing icons)

I have just built a new computer, using Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, however, I've noticed when I open Windows explorer, 3 out of 4 times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed. I've tried reformatting, using different hard drives, but the problem persists no matter what I do. I've reinstalled Windows 7 with only a single drive plugged in, tried different SATA ports, but this problem keeps coming back. The only thing I can think of is that the Windows 7 install disk is corrupted and not installing properly.

I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this, the icons wont display in any folder, although the file names will. Likewise, when trying to sort files by date, type, etc, they will not sort.

When this happens, I can easily type in C:\ to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing, sorting, etc still is a problem.

Has anyone had this problem? Know of a way to fix this? I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after.

Why is it that sometimes the folders icons show samples of their contents and sometimes not?

Check the two images: the first shows Desktop in Windows Explorer; the second shows the desktop itself.

Any idea on how to make Windows always show the folders contents samples?

I'm seeing incorrect icons displayed under Windows 10 for certain executable files when viewed in Windows 10 Explorer in Details view. If I change the folder view to Thumbnails, the correct icon is shown, but if I switch back to Details view they're still displayed incorrectly.

I have repeatedly tried resetting the icon cache and re-opening the folders, but that doesn't help.

Is this a known Windows 10 bug? I'm running 64-bit Windows 10 Pro, Version 1703 (OS Build 15063.674)

Hello,

Sure hope someone can help me with this. Certain desktop shortcuts created in IE-7 keep showing wrong logo -- i.e. for entirely different company! It's always the same 8 or 9 shortcuts.

Examples: My Hotmail logo appears with an Old English sort of "T" (Daily Telegraph?)...Google shows wrong company logo...All 4 shortcuts to pages on my own web site will show Bank of America logo (often after I've visited that on-line banking site). Another site shows the eBay logo!

Deleting these misbehaving shortcuts will not solve the problem. The very same "wrong" logos will appear on the newly created shortcuts.

Strangest thing is: If I put computer in Standby mode for perhaps a couple hours the lgos in question will correct themselves!

I should mention that each of the shortcuts in question will access the CORRECT site, but the wrong logos have me flummoxed!

Any help in resolving this will be most appreciated.

Answer:SOME shortcut icons intermittently showing wrong logo

you could delete iconcache.db and reboot. sometimes the cache gets corrupted.

First, please forgive me if I have overlooked this issue in the many searches I have performed thus far.

I would like to know if anyone has a way to change all folder icons within a single folder to one specific icon without performing each one individually. I have over 1,400 folders within a master folder of which I would like to change the child folder icons. I really don't wish to perform this on a folder-by-folder basis.
This is not a Default Folder Icon Change inquiry. This is simply all child folders within a single master folder. I would also be interested if the change would affect all folders of a specific type. Windows 7 does allow the 'setup' of a folder to be distributed (details view with selected details, order, and column size for example) but the icon did not distribute as well.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Bulk Change All Folder Icons in Single Folder or Folder Type

First, a little bit of theory. What happens when a person sets a custom icon for a folder in Windows 7?
1. Attributes of a Folder change to Read-only (of the folder, NOT content!).
2. A hidden system file created inside that folder, which contains a link to the icon.

Thus, having such file as model, it is possible simply copy it across desired folders, and change attributes of those folders correspondingly.

Secondly, having this idea in my mind, I have put all of my little knowledge of Batch files together and created a script.
BEFORE script is started the following is needed to be done:
Master folder needs to be selected and a custom icon applied to it.

ONLY AFTER THAT
1. Script is placed inside that master folder and launched.
2. First, script checks if hidden system file with custom icon settings is there.
3. Secondly, script looks for subfolders and start changing its attributes.
4. Thirdly, script copies this settings file to all subfolders of current master folder, including all levels of subfolders.

For 100 folders it took about 21 seconds, for 200 folders with different levels of subfolders it took about 57 seconds on my laptop.

I have included remarks (comments) in the source code for better understanding what is going on.

UPDATE: Original file deleted. Script was not meant to be applied to system folders.
Please check a newer FIXED version at this post.

I know it's a minor issue, but it's driving me crazy, plus I'm afraid it's a symptom of some other problem that hasn't manifested itself yet.  To clarify: When I flip my Yoga into a different position, a popup on the upper right corner tells me which mode I'm in. The popup shows an example of my position in an icon, but recently, the icons have changed to other random images. What I've tried: UpdatesErased icon cacheSystem RestoreRefreshReinstall Windows What else can I try? I do not like how the default icons look like and I know a lot of people would agree with me. So, I remember at much older Win versions we was able to change the default icons for any thing. But now I only found an option to change the icon for 1 folder at a time, which is good with some individual folders that needs to look different. But files like .zip or .rar just look ugly next to them. Changing icon for each of them individually takes toooooooo much time and still each time a new file comes the same problem is there. So, my question is, if I can change the default icons for a different types of files (just must be an option, lol)? Thanks!

Did you use a multilayer icon or a single layer icon? Put the icon that you used in a zip folder and post it here so I can look at them.

Hi this is the problem I am facing. I upgraded for windows 10 few months ago. The problem is when I set an app for default for a file the old icon is only showing. it never changes. For an example if I choose to set VLC media player as default for an Mp4 file which presently opened by windows movie player even if I change it to VLC it will again show the Windows movie app icon instead of VLC. This is a big problem for. I need response asap. The only solution I know is I need to restart explorer. But in windows 8.1 It was all Ok. I have rebuilt the icon cache also. It did not work. So I need a solution. THANKS

All the icons were fine until couple of weeks ago.

From then onward all my folders are not showing the correct contents.
What I mean by this is that all the folders are shown closed, despite the fact that there are files in them.
When I create new folders, they are also closed no matter what files I put in.
(Don't mind the folders being Black, It was working fine with that for over 2 years)
(Refer to the attachment please)

Also It does no show thumbnails..
(eg. music files showing no album jackets, Videos not showing previews, Pictures with no preview)
[File view is set to large icons]
(refer to the attachment please)

I been looking for the solution for weeks now, but haven't found a suitable fix for this..
Does anyone know how to fix this issue?

So far I've tried :
1. Rebuilding the Icon cache (Icon Cache - Rebuild)
2. I tried system restore back to when the folders were normal
3. Cleaning/Fix registry using CCleaner, RegClean Pro
4. Restoring to normal theme (this just made folders back to yellow, folders were still closed)
5. Virus check

If anyone know how to fix it please help, it would be very grateful...

Answer:Folder Icons not showing correct contents.. How do I fix this?

Welcome to the Seven Forums

It looks like you've done quite a bit of troubleshooting already.

Have a look at this tutorial Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

And this one
Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset

If that doesn't work give this a try:
Do Option 2 of this tutorial SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker it will not harm any data or programs you have installed it will try to find and repair any corrupt system files that you have. You may need to do this up to 3 times with a reboot after each scan. If you have customized any system files this will change them back to the default, if you have you might want to make some backup copies first.

I presently have folder icons which show a standing, partially opened folder with the first two images in the folder appearing as pages in the folder (so you only see a small part of the image). But I recall having had in the past a flat, closed folder icon with he first 4 images of the folder showing on the front of the folder. Is the standing, partially opened folder a Windows 7 default or is it something I did (perhaps with a third party app?)? I would like to get the old icon back with the flat, closed folder so I can see better what is inside without having to open the folder. Could it be that I am remembering the way it was in XP?

Thanks for any advice!
Janet

Answer:Folder Icons showing image contents

That is the default way Windows 7 does it.
You are most likely remembering what XP did.

I've seen multiple posts here and other forums and I have tried all of the steps provided in those posts but it is not resolving my issue. I have the exact same issue as the user in THIS THREAD. I have tried the icon database rebuild (both manually and using the bat file HERE), I have tried ie4uinit.exe - ClearIconCache from command prompt, I have tried Disk Cleanup and checked the box to delete icon cache and I have tried different cache size amounts using the steps HERE. I've tried these all from normal boot and safe mode. I don't know what else to do. The icons that have the problem keep changing every time I restart the PC. I can change them to another icon, rename the icon the shortcut had previously been using and reapply that icon and it shows normal at that time but as soon as I restart the PC, icons change to the smaller size on random shortcuts again. What other steps are there?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Multiple icons showing in smallest size when using Extra Large Icons

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Have you tried the batch file in this tutorial:
Folder View Settings - Reset All to Default
It resets the area of the registry that stores some desktop icon info.
warning: read the note about desktoprestore.

You might also want to try combining the batch file for icon cache rebuild with this one... only kill/restart explorer once at the end.

Does this problem happen if you create (& log onto) a new (test) user account?

I had a catastrophic failure, just created a new Windows 7 Ultimate system with very little installed. I attached a disk drive from the previous system that has data on it (it wasn't damaged). All files are accessible but I CANNOT CHANGE THE ICONS ON ANY OF THE FOLDERS.

I've done all of the following recursively throughout the folder tree:
(1) In folder and search options I checked "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
(2) changed owner of all files to myself (I'm an Administrator)
(3) changed permissions to give myself full control
(4) changed effective permissions to give myself full control
(5) ran attrib -r /d /s d:\work in a cmd.exe shell with administrative privilege

I still cannot change any of the folder icons.

I am running vista home premium service pack one. On the desktop the program icons are there. Is this the way it is supposed to be?

Answer:My program folders all have generic folder icons

Yes it is, though you can change them if you so desire. I dont mind all the generic icons, since I jsut read the file names. We can tell you how to change them, though it is a bit of work, though you can change the default icon I think...

~Lordbob

P.S. To change the icon, right click on it and click "properties". Go to the general page, and next to icon, there should be a change icon button. CLick it, and you can choose the new icon from there. If you want a different one, there should be a browse button to select manually.

Hi,

I am new to this forum and looking for a help on the following problem facing in restoring default option for all folders at once.

I have some folders assigned with icons, Title & Subject through desktop.ini placed in each folder.

As soon as i move to explorer window, the particulars assigned above to folders does not reflect until i right click on each folder and pressing restore default for each folder.

What i am looking for an option to do the restore default option to be clicked for each folder at once, & thereby saving my time.

Hope i am able to express what i am seeking for.

Request for help.

Anticipatory thanks!

I choose to accept the free upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Instantly regretted it. I've had to take my Desktop to Bestbuy over 10 times already to get things to work again.

I still have Windows 10 and most of my settings appear to be optimal but one thing that continually bugs me is that in my This PC > Documents > PDF's > if I create a folder and fill it with PDF files that I bought and downloaded to my Desktop the folder icon itself in the documents folder will not show a preview of a cover page of a PDF in the folder icon itself.

It will only show preview pics of the program I use to open the PDF file in the folder icon. Ironically since I've tried installing multiple PDF viewer softwares to attempt to solve this problem my folders are showing multiple PDF Viewer Softwares as previews inside the folders themselves.

Is there any way to fix this? If so, please let me know.

Answer:Folder Icons won't show preview of PDF's in those Folders

Hi, I happen to have just incidentally fixed this as a consequence of discovering why Windows search content indexing wasn't indexing certain documents, including pdf text documents.

Try this:
Download and 'install' (you can use Nirsoft's Zipinstaller if you wish) Nirsoft's searchfilterview.
Note the ifilter listed by that for pdf's.
Now open an admin command prompt and enter a command like this:
regsvr32 D:\Office\PDF\SumatraPDF\PdfFilter.dll

(That one's for the Sumatra pdf reader- change it for whatever you use).

Now you may have to reindex Windows search before you see the change, or you may not- I don't know.

Hi All,

I'm puttting together my home network, and I've decided I want to customise the icons on certain folders to make them easier to spot in Explorer.

Well, all works fine, until I move the folders to the network, whereupon the contents of desktop.ini are completely ignored... Does anyone have a fix for this?

I've been Googling this for days

I'm using Vista Home Premium (x64) and an LG NAS drive.

Cheers, all

Quite recently I have noted that "hidden" folder icons have started showing up when I call up the C disk contents on screen . This applies to hidden sub-folders as well . Their Properties clearly show that they are hidden files but they appear in a "ghost" format on the screen . I run XP and the hard disk is nearly full . I don't know whether capacity is an issue here . Has anyone any thoughts .??

Answer:Solved: Hidden Folder Icons have started showing up

Go to Start>Control Panel>Folder Options>View tab and uncheck or untick Show hidden files and folders, click Apply/OK.

Hi, as much as I didn't want switched from Windows XP to Windows 7. One of the things that I hate to this is the view of folders in Windows 7. I have all the icons from Windows XP, extracted and saved in one folder, I tried to change the icon of all folders in Windows 7 in this way: knock with right click on the folder, choose Properties, then go to personalize, choose Change icon, and from the folder where they are stored and retrieved my icons, choose the icon you want, then choose the option apply to all folders and, however the icon changes only the folder on which this procedure is carried out. Can anyone explain how and in what way to do so for all the folders in my entire system to change their icons all at once, and look at which the icon is set. I know that for this purpose, you need to modify and alter the registry of Windows 7 could you clarify exactly what and how to do it?

You will probably say "Go into Folder Options, go to file types" etc. Well I need a way besides that. Both "File Folder" & "Folder" already have the icon I want set, however my actual folders still have the default Windows folder icon set.

So my question is, how do I change that? I looked in the registry and the right icon is set as the default Icon, yet still....

P.S I don't want to change the icon for just ONE folder, I want it to be system wide, and take effect on all new folders also.

The way I did it was by changing the default icons in the imageres and shell32 dll's using Restorator.

If you take ownership of those 2 dll's in system32 you can then replace them with the modified ones, if you upgrade to build 7260 x86 I can give you the dll's to replace the originals, also you will find the the download links for the blue icons in the custom theme thread.

Hello,
I have been running into a interesting issue with my two computers; one has Home Premium 64, and the other is 32.

When I right click on a folder, and click "properties", then go to the "customize" tab to change the folder icon, nothing happens. I have tried using the standard built-in System32.dll icons, as well as custom .ico files that I've downloaded. But it is a hit or miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I thought maybe it was not refreshing immediately. But even when I restart the computer, the old icon is still there.

Any ideas?

Firstly run this up to 3 times or until it returns no errors and reboot between runs - SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Then run this - Icon Cache - Rebuild

If that doesn't solve the issue you may consider restoring your system to before you installed the icon changer - System Restore

When I try to customise what behaviour the various icons exhibit on the taskbar (and I'm taken to CONTROL PANEL- ALL CONTROL PANEL ITEMS-NOTIFICATION AREA ICONS), some of the icons are correct and truly represent the proramme which they are aligned with, but some are incorrect and some are blank and some are duplicates of icons for other programmes that are shown elsewhere.

I've tried everything I can think of, but nothing works.

Can anyone help, please?

Have done a search and could not see a definite answer to this.

I would like to change a couple of individual folder icons in W7. However, I do not want it to effect and be the default icon for the whole system , just an individual icon for one folder alone. The others can just stay as they are now with the standard W7 icon.

Is there any way to do that without causing problems with the default icon used by all other folders.

Any advice appreciated :-)

Open file properties; ( Right Click on the file ), click on "Customize", and then "Change Icon". Choose the icon you want to use.

I have some files and folders on a DVD. I open the DVD on my Windows 7 Home Premium.

1. Please see the attachment named 'File Icon'. Side by side are 2 movie files. Codec of the movie on the left is 'H264-MPEG4 AVC (Part10) (AVC1)'. The icon shows an actual picture of what is in the film which is very helpful to identify the contents without playing the film. The file on the right with the VLC Player icon does not show the content. Codec of this film is 'Flash Video (FLV1)'. Is there any way that I can get this also to show an actual picture from the film instead just the VLC icon?

Regards,

Answer:How do I change files and folder icons

Seems to me the file association is the issue, depends upon the file type, i.e. .wmv is associated with Windows Media Player. VLC can play a number of formats. But again, it depends upon the file type/s of your videos. Changing the extension can change what program you'll need but also can kill the ability to view a file. I've had success in changing a few .mp4 files to .flv but VLC still plays it.

Hello, I am hoping some of you bright minds will help me figure out a problem I am trying to solve. I am trying to manually edit my folder icons since iconpackager has failed to do so. I have edited the imageres.dll file using reshacker and have replaced the imageres.dlls in both the system32 folder and the systemwow64 folder. I rebooted then proceeded to clear my iconcache as well as deleting thumbs in disk clean up. After rebooting twice, not all of the folder icons appear with the changes I've made....
However, the libraries icon and favorites icon changed just fine.
I edited icons 3,4,5,6 and 162 with reshacker.

I've included an attached snippet from my documents, as you can see, the xwidget folder that is pink changed, but I do not understand why the others look like the default style...

Anyone have any ideas for a solution?
Thanks in advance!

EDIT

So I was able to make them change when I went to control panel > folder options and ticked always show icons, never thumbnails under the view tab... I'll keep this thread up if anyone else might run into the same issue...

Hi,
I was playing with Virtualbox and decided to instal Win 7 32 sp1 Ultimate. And one of the things I noticed were that protected folders have a lock but on my host computer (the one running virtualbox) in the protected folders instead of the lock I get a shortcut.

Oh boy! More Windows 7 frustrations. Please help.

I have folders containing audio files (mostly audio books) with completely irrelvant and stupid pictures on them which I cannot change!!! There is no customisation tab on the properties menu like Vista.

I now have an audio book based on picking up women with a strange looking woman on it and an audio book on Atheism by Betrand Russell with a big, fat gospel singer on the front because Windows Media Player thinks that it is an album by a singer which it isn't! Even the files have the same incorrect picture which I am helpless to change.

This is so damn dumb! Why can't I change the picture on the front? Am I stuck with it?

Any ideas?

Answer:Cannot Change Folder or file picture/icons!!!

I prefer all folders to be "general" rather than content related - a "pictures" directory is a hinderance to my style of work. Sounds like your situation is similar...here is how I set the directories and folders.

> I use the tried and true OLD explorer view where you see the tree display on the left.

> I use the tried and true OLD explorer view to include the Menu bar.

> Select the desired folder from the left nav pane such as Desktop>Libraries>Pictures.

> Right click on the folder and select Properties.

> Click the Optimize this library for: drop list and select General Items.

> Click Apply then click OK.

> From the Menu bar click View>Choose details... and select (or deselect) items as desired.
I hope that at least gets you started.

Hello and thanks for reading!

We have a multimedia production department, and I'm thinking on a system to mark the "ready for backup" folders. We create one folder for every project (and we can find all related documents, images, etc inside).

We can't change the folder name to mark it because there are some documents inside with absolute paths, this means that if you move or change the name of the folder, you have to relink too many things, and this is not an option.

OK I thought that it would be a good idea to mark the folder as "ready for backup" with a different icon, but it doesn't work on the network folders (only in local). I tried creating and customizing a desktop.ini file inside the folder but it doesn't work in our environment (SBS2008 server + NAS disks and W7/WXP clients).

I wonder if somebody have an idea to do it.

Thanks a lot,

Jud

hi there

i start to get really weird problem lately...

the Explorer toolbar of windows 7 sometimes show me different icons only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, use..java? o_O

it show the icons of the last progrem i used, like if i will enter to Utorrent window, then i will see it icon on the next progrem i will try to launch like Windows defender.. (only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, and use Java, games and etc not effect by that).

however when i restart my pc the problem is fixed.. till i open progrems like Jdownloader or progrem that use Java (i think... i not test it many times yet..), or wait really alot of time when the pc is on... there is a small chance that it come from some filters or codecs because i watch animes really alot and use CCCP codec pack...

this problem happend to me long time ago and was fixed by itself.. i also format since then so i thought it was gone for good...

anyone know how to fix it? O_o

*i attach two pics , and btw i have Hebrew language OS so don't panic when you see the desktop from right to left instead of left to right ^^

Hello, when i first got my compute i installed a custom theme changing basically evrything about my computer and its apearence on the desktop. This includes the icons as well. When i tried to revert back to the original windows 7 icons it seems that this theme (which is third party I should mention has changed their icons to the default ones) has made the their icons the default. I was wondering if their is a way to get the original windows 7 icons back.
Thanks

I have had this issue for several weeks now & there is very limited info about it on the net, and what I have found about it hasn't resolved the issue.

Basically my external hard drive & my flash drive appear as folder icons in My Computer & not drive icons.

I am guessing that the virus is on my laptop and then transfers itself to any external media I connect to it. Then if I put that same external media into a different PC/laptop, it transfers itself to that PC/laptop too...

Does any one have any ideas on this one?

Hi AllSomething weird happened after the last Windows Automatic Update, any standard yellow Windows folder icon I had has changed from the small yellow icon that is standard, to the icon Windows uses when it does not recognize an extension, the black, blue and red Folder screen icon or whatever it is.Also, some other Icons also disappeared altogether, such as on the Start Bar, icons for functions such as 'Search', 'Run', 'Help and Support' and 'My Network Places' also went altogether, and were not replaced by another.I didn't think it would be a big deal, but it's amazing how much it slows you down when searching for folders, the yellow icon is imprinted into my brain. Not to mention using different computers for work etc, it's getting frustrating! I know I can right click "Properties" "Customize" and change icon, but the yellow folder icon isn't even an option when I do this, and in fact I only have 3 icons to choose from now - blue DOS screen, Note Pad, and the one is present now instead of the yellow folder icons.Running XP SP3. I have done some searching for this issue and it has been around, but no-one has ever found the solution on the forums I've read, anyway.Cheers,

I'm using Windows XP Professional SP3. I was wondering if it's possible to change the folder icons for the "My Pictures, My Music, and My Video. When I click on the folders properties there is no tab for customize for these three folders like there is on the others. I just want folders without the music note, picture, or film strip in it. By the way, this is a very cool site! I use it often to find answers I'm looking for and it's been very helpful. I couldn't find anything on the folder icons, Thank you so much for your time!

Customising user folder icons has always been a bit tricky. All user folders apart from the desktop and contacts user folders can be changed via the customize tab in properties when the user folder is accessed from my computer (i.e. not from the desktop).

To customise the desktop and contacts user folders requires a registry change. For Windows 7 this is explained here User Folders - Change Default Icon - Windows 7 Help Forums, and the necessary .reg files are also provided. This method actually worked for me too in Windows 8. However, after the newest updates, the icons I had added this way have disappeared, and so has the customize tab which I had added via the .reg files available on the page mentioned above. Repeating the reg change would not make a difference. The newest updates must have changed something in the Windows 8 registry to that effect (through those updates all other user folders also lost the custom icon I had previously added, but I was able to easily restore them, as the customize tab of these user folders didn't disappear).

Hence my question: how to now change the folder icons for the desktop and contacts user folders in windows 8?

Since all my other user folders are customised in a particular style, leaving the default icon for the desktop and contacts folders looks a bit weird...

I have a folder that contains over 400 subfolders and new subfolders are added from time to time. Is there a way to change the default view of a folder and all its subs to extra large icons?

I know how to optimize the view of a folder and all its subs for pictures; but, that's not what I want.

I want Extra Large Icons.

hi guys,

as you see from the title I'm having several problem with my windows XP PCs.

First, with my new Dell Mini 10:
1. Systray icons won't hide. I checked the properties and it was already set to 'hide when inactive'. I unchecked, then checked again, but all the icons are still there filling up the tiny taskbar. How can I repair this and is it registry related?

2. Warning on low screen setting. Everytime I boot, there's the notification that the current screen is set at the lowest setting, but it is already set to 32-bit, 1024x576, the default maximum screen resolution. Both desktop properties and Intel GMA setting confirm this, yet the notification kept on appearing everytime I boot. What seems to be the problem?

Next on my PC:
3. Default icons are missing. Even after I restore the default icons through desktop properties they are not there. It seems the icon files are missing. Please help how to restore them.

4. The desktop properties wallpaper is pointing to the wrong folder. I checked through regedit, and it's supposedly point to %SystemRoot%\Web\Wallpaper, the folders are there, but somehow the properties stops at %SystemRoot% (I believe this is the WINDOWS folder on system?). So only pictures on that folder are shown. I remodified the registry but to no effect. Again any input will be appreciated.

Thanks a lot for any help. Again if there is double posting of my problems please lead me to the post(s).
Peter

Answer:icons missing, taskbar won't hide, desktop wallpaper wrong folder, screen setting

You should really consider just doing a Repair install. By the time you figure out what is causing all the issues, it would take you less time to just do a repair.

I created a folder- "Utilities" - on my Vista desktop, to store often use shortcuts. I changed the standard "Windows yellow file folder" to a star icon.

Also created 4 sub folders under "Utilities" & changed all their folder icons to same star.

If I click the quick launch main "Utilities" folder w/ star icon, it shows the star (for a bit) in the task bar icon for the "Utilities" opened folder.

But if from that main folder, I click on any of its sub folders (all w/ star icons), which just opens the next folder in the same window, the task bar icon then only shows a standard Windows yellow file folder.

Here's the twist: If in explorer window, I browse to C:\Users\<current user>\Desktop\Utilities (where "Utilities," is the folder I created), and "Open" any of the 5 folders in a NEW WINDOW FROM THERE, THEN the task bar tab displays the stars. IOW, in this method, I'm actually opening a NEW explorer window for each of the sub folders - NOT going from one folder to the next (IN THE SAME WINDOW). As long as a NEW explorer window is opened, it displays the correct star icons.

How do I get the star icons I put on these "Utility" SUB folders, to show up on task bar tab (instead of yellow file folder icon), when I just CLICK the sub folders, going from one folder to the next, in the SAME WINDOW, NOT OPEN A NEW WINDOW for EVERY sub folder? I don't want 5 of those folders opened s... Read more

Hi,

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Having a problem with System Icons not showing. Been really frustrating trying to resolve. I actually had this problem before and was able to get it working using the registry overrides on this site, but they dont work now for some reason. I have attached my screenshots. One shows the 'Always show Notification Icons...' greyed out and no icons listed on the Manage notification icons window (you will also notice no system icons are displayed). The other shows all system icons greyed out except for the Clock

Here are the steps I have done:

1) Enabled the 'hidden' Administrator account as seen here:

Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable

2) As this Administrator account, Run several Malware/Virus/Rootkit scans from numerous vendors, no issues found

3) Used the registry options to try to enable notification area settings

"Notification Area Icons" Settings - Enable or Disable

4) Used the registry options for each system icon to enable

How to Enable or Disable Windows 7 Notification System Icons

System Icons - Enable or Disable

After all the steps above, including the Malware/Virus scan - still greyed out options.

Does someone have some advice on anything else I can try?

Steve

Answer:System Icons Disabled. Unable to change settings

Hello Steve,

Double check by using step 1 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below to see if this may the issue instead. It looks closer to how your screenshots look.

Hope this helps,

Just recently on our Windows 2000 Terminal Server running Citrix our program icons started to change. Specifically our office icons, but there are a few others too. The icons are now generic file icons. I attempted to go into folder options and manually change the incorrect icons, but all of my options to change anything about a file type are greyed out. I am effectively locked out of making icon changes. I have attempted to these changes as a Domain admin, and as the local admin on the server.

I also am unable to change the icons on office shortcut items.

The only change instituted on this server was the addition of roaming profiles for some of our users. None of these users has a Domain Admin account, and no user is a member of the local admin group on the server.

I ran AdAware and Spybot, and came up with nothing.

At this point, I am at a loss. I need to be able to change my icons back without reinstalling all of these programs. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

Answer:Unable to change icons on Windows 2000 Server, please help!

If you have a server it is laughable you use spybot and adaware go get spysweeper. As for the problem it doesn't sound like spyware more like extra folder information being reset or lost.

Hey everyone! Long time no see!

Okay, so a friend of my dad told him that he used to see the folder icons and labels in the left pane of Outlook 2007 in a bigger font/size before switching to a new computer with Windows 7. Obviously, we all know that upgrading Windows won't change font sizes that are coded into independent programs, so I'm thinking that maybe his old computer was running at a lower resolution. Anywho, my dad's friend asked my dad to ask me this question, and since I don't use Office 2007 anymore, I need to ask you: is there a way to change the size of the folder icons and labels in the left pane of Outlook 2007, without changing the size of anything else?

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Change size of folder icons and text in Outlook 2007

Not sure about Outlook 2007 as I've been on 2910 for a while now but if you go to the file - options - advanced and check out the options for the navigation pane there should be a font button - change this to something more appropriate to your needs andthis will not alter the other panes

If would also appear that the icons expand to match your font choice

Hi guys,
I've recently attempted to patch my folder icons manually with Resource Hacker. It didn't work, in fact it had worked for some folders but most folders remains the same beige icons.
I got frustrated since every step seems correct, but anyways I decided to revert back to normal, by replacing the custom imageres.dll file with the original to both System32 and SysWOW64 folder, and deleting iconcache.db for it to rebuilt.
Most icons revert back to normal after that, but except the folder icons in the C:\Windows folder, where some of them are still showing up with the custom icon.
I've restarted, tried changing the icon and rebuilt the cache file so many times, I even restored to a backup point before the change is made, but still no luck.
I've taken ownership for the necessary files and have run as admin when necessary.

Any ideas why this is happening? and if anyone can provide some tips to successfully change all folder icons, I will be really appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,

I have a Folder on my Desktop in which
I have placed many photos.

The listing shows up just fine, and if I click on one of them, it opens perfectly.
No problems.

But, the listing in the Folder only shows a small IrfanView icon for each of them, and then a name or number.

Any way to have the listing show small thumbnails of the actual pix's, rather than just
an IrfanView icon for each ?

Thanks,
Bob

Like these:

I go to Properties -> Customize -> Change Icon, but that kind of folders don't appear.
I assume it's because they're in a location other than the default one: %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll.
Fortunately, there's a browse button. Anyone knows the location of those blue folder icons? Thanks.
