Iframe irony: Adblock Plus is probably the reason Firefox and Chrome are such memory hogs

Question: Iframe irony: Adblock Plus is probably the reason Firefox and Chrome are such memory hogs

Here?s a lovely bit of irony for you: Adblock Plus, which is by far the most popular add-on for Firefox and Chrome, is actually increasing the amount of memory used by your web browser, rather than decreasing it. Furthermore, ABP also increases the amount of time (and CPU cycles) required to render a website. Instead of making web surfing more responsive, ABP actually makes your surfing experience slower.

This might seem counterintuitive at first ? after all, ABP blocks all of those annoying animated Flash ads from loading, and so it should save you from unnecessary memory and CPU hits. Unfortunately, the actual situation is a lot more complex than that. Basically, ABP has grown too big for its own good, and just the very process of running ABP in your web browser consumes more memory and CPU cycles than it saves.
How Adblock Plus works

To begin with, according to Mozilla developer Nicholas Nethercote, there is a 60-70MB memory hit having Adblock Plus run in the background on Firefox. The main problem, though, is the process by which ABP actually blocks ads. Basically, ABP inserts a massive CSS stylesheet ? occupying around 4MB of RAM ? into every single webpage that you visit, stripping out the ads. This wouldn?t be a problem if we were still in the ?90s or early ?00s, but nowadays it is very common for a webpage to have lots of iframes, which are separate, individual webpages that are loaded and embedded within the page you?re currently looking at. The most common example is the ubiquitous social sharing widget (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) which is actually an iframe containing a separate webpage hosted on Facebook/Twitter?s servers.

You can probably see where this is going. On a modern website, there can be dozens of iframes. On the ExtremeTech homepage there are 10, which is pretty low. In Nethercote?s testing, he found that TechCrunch used around 194MB of RAM without ABP enabled ? but that doubled to 417MB with ABP enabled, after triggering all of the social widgets. In an extreme example, the VIM Color Scheme Test website ? which has hundreds of iframes ? goes from a few hundred megabytes of memory to almost two gigabytes. Nethercote only tested ABP?s memory consumption in Firefox, but we performed the same test in Chrome and got the same results.
Chrome memory usage, lots of iframes, Adblock Pro disabled
Chrome memory usage, lots of iframes, Adblock Pro enabled

It?s harder to measure the CPU hit from having ABP enabled, but after some non-scientific testing it definitely feels like websites render more slowly with ABP installed. My CPU fan spins up more often when ABP is enabled, which is usually a good indicator that the CPU is being hit hard.

The irony, of course, is that ABP?s initial popularity stemmed from its ability to block noisy, annoying, and resource-hogging Flash ads. Now, because ABP?s block list is so large, it probably consumes more RAM and CPU cycles than it saves (though it will vary from site to site, of course).
A sad Firefox, in real life (a red panda)

Personally, I stopped using ABP long ago because free websites rely on advertising revenue ? and I don?t want those free websites to go under. If you?re more worried about advertisers tracking you across the web, disabling third-party tracking cookies or using an add-on like NoScript is a much more effective (and efficient) route than using ABP. For annoying Flash ads, click-to-play add-ons like Flashblock (Firefox/Chrome) are a better option than ABP.

The other option, if you really want to block ads (especially those pesky pre-roll video ads on YouTube and the like), is to use some kind of ad-blocking proxy server. Privoxy is free, and if you run it locally there should be a minimal performance hit. As with all proxy servers, though, the one caveat is that it doesn?t work with HTTPS connections (which is a problem, because you really should be using HTTPS connections wherever possible, if you want to escape the ever-watchful eye of cyber crooks and the government).

Preferred Solution: Iframe irony: Adblock Plus is probably the reason Firefox and Chrome are such memory hogs

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am not a fan of adblockers but out of curiosity why is this of importance? Regular adblock, adblock plus, ublock, or adguard can easily block these. Thanks for the report though.

I updated to Windows 10 recently. After updating my browser kept throwing ads. So i tried adding an adblocker. However I am unable to add the respective extensions to Chrome. It is showing a 'network error' even though I am able to surf the internet without any hassles. Please advice.

Answer:Why am I unable to add Adblock or Adblock Plus or Ublock to Chrome after updating to Windows 10 ?

I have read that Google is currently making changes to the store for Chrome about how add-ons are handled. I can't say what the changes actually are and if they would affect this since the particular article I read was rather vague on that issue. Something about disabling certain apps from loading from 3rd party links, and that many would now have to visit the store in order to obtain add-ons, etc. If you're trying to download the Ad Blocker from the publisher website, then search the store for Chrome and locate the Ad Blocker there for download.
My advice is to make sure you have updated Chrome to the latest version before proceeding.

As something of a browser butterfly, I like to keep an eye on what's happening with browsers other than the one I'm currently using fulltime. Like many tech journalists (and non-journalists for that matter), I gave up on Internet Explorer quite some time ago, opting for Firefox initially. I also dabbled with Opera and Waterfox, amongst others, but for a number of years it was Firefox that delivered web pages to me. Sadly, I noticed that things started to slow down. New versions were more bloated and sluggish, and in the search for better performance, I ended up with Chrome. I've been a Chrome user for years now, but I was recently spurred into trying out Firefox once again.

Quite where the impetus came from, I'm not sure -- just one of those "let?s see if anything's changed" moments, guess. Apart from little quirks like the refresh button being on the "wrong" side of the program window, Firefox seems pretty decent. I was impressed by the sharpness of the display for starters -- I had forgotten that Chrome handles high DPIs very poorly. As I'm using a Surface Pro running at 1920 x 1080, running at 150 percent DPI scaling is essential (I don?t have microscopes for eyes!) and Chrome makes everything looks slightly blurry... not enough to put me off -- I'm still using it, after all -- but Firefox was a revelation!

Performance-wise, I found there to be little difference between Chrome and Firefox. No exhaustive tests wer... Read more

I have noticed a lot of copycats of the original AdBlock and ABP extensions, although they may not be malicious, you cannot be certain that they're trusted. (Adware companies buying Chrome extensions).

These are the ones many here use and recommend, with links to their website.

AdBlock on Chrome Web Store
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/adblock/gighmmpiobklfepjocnamgkkbiglidom

AdBlock Plus on Chrome Web Store

Or, AdGuard AdBlocker on Chrome Web Store
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/adguard-adblocker/bgnkhhnnamicmpeenaelnjfhikgbkllg
Homepage: http://adguard.com

Below are some of the copycats versions, that may or not be that trustful.

Copycat versions:

AdBlock Premium

AdBlock Super

AdBlock Pro

Code:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/adblock-pro/ocifcklkibdehekfnmflempfgjhbedch
Note: I am not accusing that these extensions are malicious, but more so can you trust them? How do you know they won't sell out for a four-figure sum of cash to Adware companies.

And who's to say the trusted ones won't sell out one day. What are your thoughts?

Frequently, not always, my up-to-date copy of Google Chrome fails to load Google Search. Particularly if I use the search/address bar, but even if I enter google.com. Other google sites load. In fact, when this happens, I just use the search web box in Gmail. Other sites have no problem loading and the computer is running fine. Other browsers (ie, firefox) never have a problem loading google.

Any ideas why this is happening? I ran through the malware removal guide months ago, but I'm going to do it again. I searched the boards and google and didn't find anything about this specific and weird problem.

I just chalk it up to another one of the bajillion things that doesn't work right in Lamux. You get what you pay for. Were you, too, running Linux when you had this problem?

I would imagine that both would work together, because Plus is suppose to have extra additions. But why run two of the same, when one will do the job?.

Hello,

My PC has been performing worse and worse over the past few months. I can't watch movies or play iTunes without skipping, and that has never happened before. I've noticed IEXPLORE.exe runs constantly, and sometimes whirs up to nearly 100%CPU and uses 100,000K of memory. When I try to end the process, it immediately reappears in the Task Manager, first at about 92K, but it gets back to 100,000K in little time.

I've checked every post written about IEXPLORE.exe, and downloaded every spyware and anti-virus ever mentioned. They did find a lot of spyware, but my problem remains. I started my computer in Safe Mode, and IEXPLORE.exe doesn't appear in the Task Manager. I use Firefox.

I've notice after my long overdue windows update, there's a few processes that seem to eat up my cpu and memory.
Two of the processes are conhost.exe and makecab.exe. Sometimes when I notice my computer starts to slow down, I see more than 5 of conhost.exe and makecab.exe up and running. While these two are up I see TrustedInstaller.exe and a certain svchost.exe taking up quite some memory and cpu.
I've let these run a few times hoping it would go away in a few days, but it hasn't and it's getting on my nerves. Is this normal? I want this these processes to resolve once and for all without the constant cpu and memory lag from day to day.

I hope I post this in the right place.

Answer:Win7 laptop, cpu and memory hogs

The best information I have is that 'Trustedinstaller' is a genuine Windows service which is partly responsible for the correct installation of Windows updates -

http://www.thewindowsclub.com/trustedinstaller-exe-windows-7

However it can get corrupted and the first line of attack is to run SFC /scannow. To do this, open the command prompt as administrator. You will find it in 'Start - All programs - Accessories'. Right click on it there and choose 'Run as Administrator'. You will get a black window with white text, type SFC /SCANNOW at the prompt, note the space between 'SFC' and '/SCANNOW', and let it run. this can take a fair amount of time, upwards of an hour or more, but let it finish and see if your problem is resolved after you re-boot your computer.

If this doesn't solve your problem I would do a system restore - 'Start - Control panel - Recovery' - and follow the prompts. Your system should have created a restore point before it installed your 'long overdue update', use that one.

Once you have done the restore you will need to re-install the updates. I would suggest you set your updates to 'Notify' and install them say five at a time doing a re-boot after each batch. If one of them creates a problem it is then much easier to establish which one it is !

MS release updates on the second Tuesday of each month - for the future try installing them on a monthly basis !

I use chrome as the default browser but its beginning to get more and more irritating. However, I dont know whether its me as the user is the cause ie doing something stupid.
I add adblock pro and I just follow the prompts. Initially a little icon will appear on right side of browser and it works no ads. Recently the little icon keeps disappearing and I have to keep adding it. I have changed my modus operandi slightly in that I have dual boot working and close down xp pro ie power off and power back on. I have win 7 on other HDD and I am using IE11 for the time being as its pretty nifty. I have chrome as well but not noticed if it looses adblock as well. I will keep an eye on it.
Is there anyway I can install adblock with xp pro and make it stayinstalled?

I print large numbers of pictures at work and after printing about 20, I try to print another batch and I get a message about not enough memory.  I go to task manager and see that Explorer.exe is using anywhere from 60 - 100 mb of memory even after I am done printing.  How can I get explorer to release this memory so i can continue without restarting between each group of pics.  Thanks for any help.  I am on Windows xp

Answer:Explore.exe hogs memory when printing pics

Please, post some computer info:- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)- hard drive size/free space (open "My Computer", right click on hard drive letter, click "Properties")- security programs in use (antivirus, firewall)

Hello!

I have high-speed internet and this computer...well...is about 10 years old, but it is NOT running like a dinosaur, lol.

Problem is, though, I have excess (or so) garbage on the computer, and sometimes it is not able to run as fast as it should when I first got it. I use Firefox and it is not handling websites that use like JAVA, FLASH, too well. Every once in a while (but not too much), computer buffers like it is loading something, and THAT'S when it starts slowing down. I sometimes have to close firefox.exe because it used too much memory at that time.

Not sure the exact problem, but here is the HijackThis log, as of 11/07/2010. I greatly appreciate your help:

Hi,
Every morning my computer alarm starts sounding and I see that over 50% of my memory is being used and that all four cores are running hot which is what triggers the alarm and ruins my hearing. I go into Task Manager, scroll down to the group of svchost listings and note the line that is having a high usage. I click on that line, hit 'End Process' then 'yes' and that line is gone and so is the noise from the alarm. The curious thing is that nothing seems to have stopped or been badly affected by that process ending. I'm not sure but I don't believe it does it again if I restart. I guess probably from a cold start only?????? Any help appreciated. My sysinfo is below.

Answer:Windows Defender hogs memory, what is best solution?

You may have scheduled Windows Defender to do so. If so, I would suggest you to unschedule Windows Defender to do so and check, if it works.

Let’s try to follow these first:
a. Type Administrative tools on the search baron the Windows 10 Desktop.
b. Select Administrative Tools and select Task Scheduler.
c. Follow this path in the left hand pane. Task Scheduler Library/Microsoft/Windows/Windows defender
d. Under the tab Conditons uncheck all the boxes under Idle, Power and Network. Do this for each scheduled Task.
e. Now, it won’t scan your computer.

Hope this information helps you

Hi, I generally like to use firefox but recently changed to chrome due to the flash problems and memory crunches. But to my misfortune, even chrome eats up the ram @60-100 mb per tab. This makes the operation of the PC so frustrating. Please suggest any other browser which is free from this craving for RAM memory.
I use Windows 8.1, 4 GB RAM.
Thank you.

Answer:Less Memory Intensive alternatives to Chrome Firefox

This will not answer your question but I have to wonder if there isn't another issue. With 4 gig of RAM 60-100 meg per tab should mean nothing...
Do you have an exceedingly large number of programs starting at system start? Have you ran security scans? Have you gone to System in your Control Panel to see if all your RAM is being reported?

Hi

I picked up some malware recently whilst using IE11 whilst viewing Youtube. Have since cleared the malware. So I am not going to use IE11 for viewing Youtube.

I also have Chrome and I'm pretty sure I've not picked up malware from Youtube as I have Adblock on that one. However, I can't view general comments on Youtube, they're blocked by Adblock. I've had a look on the net for how to get Adblock to enable the comments whilst still blocking ads. I can't find anything up to date. I think it maybe has something to do with adding a filter but if it is, I don't know how to do this or what I should be adding.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does anybody have some advice on software for determining when and how to disable startup items and background processes? I've used Autoruns to get a more in depth idea of what I am running, but it's not that clear (to me) about what processes to stop. I've been considering The Ultimate Troubleshooter from www. answersthatwork.com since I have used information from the website about items in the Task Manager.

Is there a better recommendation for this?

I've used X-Setup Pro to tweak some of the usual Windows XP stuff, but so much software wants to run all the time!

Thanks.

so when you go to "start > run > msconfig > startup tab" and see the stuff like say aim.exe or gttask.exe just google that

Oooops.

If you use Adblock Plus with Chrome and downloaded the extension pretty recently, you may want to check what you've installed. Apparently, a fake Adblock Plus extension made it through Google's verification process and lived in the official Chrome Web Store alongside the real one. Google has taken down the phony listing after SwiftOnSecurity tweeted about it and put the company on blast, but by then, it has already been up long enough to fool 37,000 people. That's a drop in the bucket for a service that has 10 million users, but it sounds like trouble for those who were unlucky enough to download it.Click to expand...

https://www.engadget.com/2017/10/09/fake-adblock-plus-chrome-extension/

Personally in my opinion, you should be using Ublock Origin. Although it does have a higher chance of breaking websites due to having so many more filters and options.

Hi,

So I happened to be browsing incognito the other day and got caught off guard by a popup dialog box (because I'd forgotten to enable AdBlock...) The dialog box in question was forcing me to install some kind of Chrome extension (it had an automated voice repeatedly instructing "to close the page, click "Add") I thought I'd escaped it when I clicked on an initial "Add" box and was able to close the page before another one came up, which I declined, but...

Now, in Chrome (where I'm browsing normally again and AdBlock is enabled) I'm getting popup ads in new tabs that are somehow overriding AdBlock and certain words are capitalised and contain spam hyperlinks. I've tried running a full scan with both Norton and MalwareBytes, having all threats removed and restarting the system but it's still there. Now, before you suggesst I simply go into the extensions tab and remove it, every time I try to do so Chrome automatically closes the tab, so it seems they've got some kind of failsafe implemented into this malware. I don't know what to do short of uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome.
Suggestions? I've tried doing a Google search and can't find anyone else who's experienced this particular problem before.

Is this the fault of a virus or another piece of malware? RougeKiller did not find anything which may have been causing the problem. AdBlock Plus says all ads are blocked from showing on Twitter and Ghostery says no tracking cookies or ad clickers are being allowed to access my browser. The sidebar comes from "Positive Finds" and nothing on it about being a Twitter-endorsed product.

Answer:Sidebar of Ads on Twitter in Google Chrome despite working AdBlock Plus

UPDATE: Ads appear on certain other sites including product reviews (shopping ads) and my university (other local schools and colleges). AdBlock Plus and Ghostery are working on all these sites. The ad bars are from the same group mentioned in the Twitter problem.

The Anti-Adblock Killer Script has not been updated for quite a while now. Most sites can sniff it.

Fortunately, there are a few alternatives. I have been using the uBlock Protector Extension (Chrome only) for the past month and it works flawlessly. It is also updated frequently.

uBlock Protector Extension (CHROME ONLY)
Install uBlock Origin by Raymond Hill (Chrome Web Store Link)
Enable Adblock Warning Removal List from uBlock Origin settings panel.
Enable the uBlock Protector List filter. - Thank you r/adeldk for the heads-up.
Apply changes.
Install uBlock Protector Extension (Chrome Web Store Link)

Anti-Adblock Killer Continued (Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, Edge)

Install Tampermonkey (Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Safari, Edge)
Install an Adblock (I'd recommend uBlock Origin)
(uBlock Origin users) Enable Adblock Warning Removal List from uBlock Origin settings panel.
Install the AAK-cont Userscript
If you are using uBlock Origin -> https://xuhaiyang1234.gitlab.io/AAK-Cont/dist/aak-cont-script-ubo.user.js.
If you are using AdBlock, Adblock Plus, or other adblockers -> https://xuhaiyang1234.gitlab.io/AAK-Cont/dist/aak-cont-script-notubo.user.js

Add the custom AAK-cont filter to your Adblock -> Anti-Adblock Killer Continued

Take note

Do NOT install AAK-Cont if you are using uBlock Protector, it will cause undefined behavior.
If you were using the original Anti-Adblock Killer (by Reek), it is recommended that you delete the Userscript from Tampermonkey and ... Read more

I just downloaded Mozilla Firefox 2 (don't know the exact version, but its the newest, i think.) And i got adblock plus, its acting all wierd, like it will block the image but its still there... and when i go to ad filters i looked at the drop down menu... i saw subscription, anyone know any good ones? And with the Noscript, is there a way u can stop the little bar at the bottom that says: scripts stopped... is there any way to stop that?

Thanks,
Master5270

Answer:Firefox, Adblock Plus, And Noscript

Right click on NoScript logo and choose "options". Choose "notifications" tab. Uncheck "show message about blocked script".

Filter subscriptions
Users can add external filtersets. Adblock Plus includes the ability to use one or more external filter subscriptions that are automatically updated. Filterset.G is incompatible with this system, but other filtersets can added by typing their addresses. A list of known Adblock Plus subscriptions is maintained on the Adblock Plus official website.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adblock#External_links

You may be experiencing a conflict between the NoScript and Adblock Plus addons. Suggest you turn off NoScript and see if you still see the ads. I use Adblock, not Adblock plus, NoScript and Flash block on Firefox l.5 with no problem like you describe.

Adblock Plus 2.6.5 for Firefox

Changes

Fixed: Element hiding exceptions are broken by changes in Firefox 34 and Firefox 35 (issue 1241, issue 1381).
Fixed: Blocking via context menu won?t always suggest blocking the most recent request (issue 362).
Fixed: Issue reporter will complain about too many filter lists even when these filter lists are ?special? like the anti-adblock list (issue 690).
Fixed: Disabling filters via space bar no longer works in preferences (issue 1129).
Fixed: Sharing Adblock Plus from the first-run page won?t work if the Anti-Social list is enabled (issue 1133).
Fixed: Anti-Adblock warning will sometimes appear on websites without any anti-adblock behavior (issue 1161).
Made $sitekey option behavior more consistent, it can be used similarly to $domain now rather than whitelisting complete websites only (issue 432).

I use firefox adblock plus with easylist filter. When I go to si.com or mlb.com I can't see the main page on either. I think it has something to do with flash cause when I go to foxsports the front page works correctly by going to different stories like it's suppose to. I have the latest version of flash I believe.

I am lost as to what is causing this. Can someone please help me out.

here's what mlb.com looks like

I can't seem to locate the adblock extension for Mozilla/Firefox on the extensions web site. Anyone else confirm? It was the top download as recent as last week. Not showing now.

Answer:Firefox adblock extension not available

There's probably not a real (edit: aka "stable") 0.9 version of adblock yet.

"Old Extensions and Themes

To prevent the kind of problems we had with the 0.8 release (users were having the browser not start with "No XBL Binding for Browser" errors, and finding that their theme was broken), when you run 0.9 for the first time all of your extensions will be automatically disabled, and the theme will be reset to the default. You must then look for newer versions of your extensions that are compatible with Firefox 0.9 since the extension API has changed. After Firefox 0.9 these updates should be more seamless."

I use Firefox, with adblock, and for some reason, the easylist filter causes my Yahoo search autocomplete to disappear when I mouse over it. It doesn't happen on the home page, only once I start a search, for example, I type in "bleeping" and hit enter, and it brings me to the list of searches it found. Then I put my cursor in the search bar, and it brings down a list of stuff related to "bleeping", and I go to click on one of them, the whole list just disappears. If I turn adblock off, or the easylist off, it doesn't happen, but with just easylist filter off, it doesn't really block any ads. Is there any way around this?

Edit: It also does it when I put my cursor over the mail icon too. Instead of it dropping down and showing the first couple emails, it doesn't drop down at all. Turning adblock, or easylist filter off fixes it.

I totally did this, and now I can't figure out how to fix it. A friend accidentally blocked all pictures from Photobucket with the right click menu option and couldn't fix it, so I did it thinking I could figure it out. I can't. Which means I can no longer see pictures from Photobucket either. I've been all through their support forums, and nothing they suggest works. New Firefox iFrame Bug Bypasses URL Protections.

There is a newly discovered vulnerability in Mozilla's flagship Firefox browser that could enable an attacker to trick a user into providing his login credentials for a given site by using an obfuscated URL. In most cases, Firefox will display an alert when a URL has been obfuscated, but by using an iFrame, an attacker can evade this layer of protection, possibly leading to a compromise of the user's sensitive information.Click to expand...

As seen In comments at above link:

Since I've been using Firefox and Adblock, I've been exporting and regularly backing up my Adblock configuration, and whenever I install Firefox, I import those settings so ads I've blocked will be blocked for whoever I install Firefox for, or myself if I'm doing a reformat.

Then I came to the idea of collaborating lists. I imagine it's been done, probably on Mozillazine forums, but I haven't got an account there, and there are plenty of Firefox fans. Hey, at least it's not another Gmail topic. Anyway, without further comment from the peanut gallery, here's mine:

Hi all

Like a lot of other users, Ive been experiencing pop-up ads in both firefox (despite have Adblocker installed) and Steam. This has also been occurring on a few android devices, however im convinced that that is non-related.

I have formatted both C drive and Steam drive, installed and ran AdwCleaner, MalwareBytes, McAfee Security Centre and Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool (not at the same time). The issue still persists.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Answer:Persistant pop-up ads in Steam and Firefox even with Adblock

Has anyone else experienced problems with Firefox 6.x or Firefox 7.x beta with the Ghostery & Adblock Plus addons, in which sites like my.yahoo.com or lowes.com, or others, in which if you try a search from my.yahoo.com when logged in, or pulldown menus at a site like lowes.com. I have not had any problems until around 9/12/11, when something changed either at the sites, or with updates to either addon.

The problem I am getting with my.yahoo.com, is when you type something into the search box on the webpage, then click on the web search button, you get nothing, just a dead response as if the button is not there. With Lowes.com, the pulldown menus along the top do not work, even though you can mouse over, they do not show up.

I only figured out that it was both ghostery & adblock plus in either one form or another, that together they did not work with the two sites mentioned, or by their ownself, that either site was broken by the two addons. As of now, I have removed both from firefox, until I get a response from the authors that they have found a solution.

Now of course in turn with not running the addons, is plenty of adverts on websites, and of course tracking, which is why I used ghostery.

Answer:adblock plus & ghostery problems with firefox

I've had adblockplus installed forever and have noticed no change. Both those sites work fine for me.

I'd put my money on Ghostery causing the issue. Try clearing your FF cache and reinstalling adblockplus and see if you still have the problem at lowes.com.

(I'm going to give Ghostery another chance sometime this weekend because I like the idea of it but it blocks comments from loading on one of my favorite sites. I'll test out lowes and yahoo with it installed and let you know how things go.)

Twitter is alit today, it seems, with news of Google neutralising AdBlock Plus. The popular extension, originally created by Wladimir Palant in 2006, is used by many to bypass ads hosted on the internet, including the video ads served by Google's video streaming site.

It has drawn the ire of many web publishers and websites alike for allegedly curtailing their revenues significantly. In an attempt to shore up the almost non-existent profits from YouTube, Google might have finally found a way of skirting the extension. Multiple Twitter users are now posting their accounts, including images, of Chrome circumventing the extension's ad-averse net:Click to expand...

Okay, so recently, Youtube started to look weird. It had no style, and basically was problematic. I thought I caught a virus, or YT was conducting something from their end; no viruses or anything found, and YT was working from other sources. Long story short: I tried disabling add-ons, and once I shut off Adblock Plus, it worked fine. This was strange that it would do that, even stranger when I got Adblock for Youtube and it works for that, but if you put both add-ons on at the same time, YT goes back to being problematic.

So, how do you fix this? I want Adblock or something similar to Adblock to be running to avoid any adds popping up, but I want to use YT too. And I don't like having to enable and disable add-ons just to use YT then surfing the web separately.

Is there a way to fix this?

Adblock Plus is by far the most popular adblocker available for the Firefox web browser. If you check stats on Mozilla's website you will notice that it has almost ten times the users as second placed NoScript Security Suite (21.4 million to 2.2 million).

Add-ons for Adblock Plus are more popular than any other adblocking extension for Firefox including Adblock Edge or uBlock.

Adblock Edge, a fork of Adblock Plus, works just like Adblock Plus in most regards but with the notable exception that it does not ship with an acceptable list of sites and advertisers.

The acceptable ads feature is enabled by default but can be disabled in the program preferences. The makers of the extension have been criticized for it ever since it was introduced by them as some companies pay for inclusion on the list.

While that is the case, their ads still have to adhere to the acceptable ads policy.

Adblock Edge was designed to do away with acceptable ads without sacrificing any other feature of Adblock Plus.

If you visit the Adblock Edge website on Mozilla right now, you will notice an announcement on it that the extension will be discontinued in June 2015.

You find the reason for the decision in the description:

Discontinued in favor of uBlock, a general purpose blocker, that not only outperforms Adblock Edge but is also available on other browsers and, of course, without "Acceptable Ads Whitelist".

It is unclear what discontinued means at this point in time as it is not... Read more

Hi,

I was at a site at approx 9:30 last night that asked me to download the newest version of flashplayer (v10).

I still have the culprit file in the trash (can send if you wish), I'm now running in safe mode. When I installed the program, windows defender and avg immediately said I had a virus and moved to quarantine. Everything froze, had to restart.

Spybot doesn't open. Avg and windows system scans see nothing. I see a strange process in task manager: 190589026.tmp.

First I can't download hijackthis/ malwarebites' antimalware/ superantispyware (web page is blocked). Then when I get around that by going to a cached webpage I can download the programs, but the install doesn't work. When I installed HJT, I crashed.

Thanks in advance, any add'l info needed I can provide ASAP.

Very often,  Google Chrome can't be opened for some reason.   Click Google Chrome again and again, and still not opened.   After many times of attempt,  I went to Task Manager, and found many Google Chrome Apps are running in background.    Disabled these apps and then run the Google Chrome again, still no coming up.  The only way to make Google Chrome back to work is to restart.   I bought the PC just one month ago.  Please help.

Answer:Very often, Google Chrome can't be opened for some reason

I would suggest uninstalling Google Chrome, and reinstalling the latest one. That way, and settings or issues could be resolved. Does other apps work fine? If other programs work fine, then it might jsut be an issue with Chrome.

So I was browsing /g/ and I noticed a thread saying that uBlock, a multi-purpose blocker for Chromium and Firefox-based browsers was taken down from the Chrome Web Store. Since it was on /g/, I didn't really believe it at first, so I Googled around to find more information and found a post on reddit that redirected to the GitHub page of the project, with the developer announcing the news and that he had no idea of why it happened. On top of that, Google seems to be dodging the question.Link to the GitHub discussion: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/issues/50The extension was taken down because they says that it "doesn't respect the policies" for the Chrome Web Store. Some users advance that they took it down, because the developer of uBlock didn't want to create a "white list" of ads that would be displayed despite uBlock being enabled, like other Adblockers do/did.I know that a lot of people here uses uBlock, since it blocks pretty much everything, it's really efficient, takes very little resources and allows you to use only one extension to do the job of 2-3 of them. What's your take on that? What do you think happened and do you think that the application will be put back in the store? On a side note, here's what you get when you try to access uBlock on the Chrome Web Store.

Answer:uBlock taken down from the Chrome Web Store for no reason

i tried gettings this for firefox yesterday and couldnt find it.

Hi

I am using Window 7 Home Basic with Sony Vaio eh26. Everything was working fine.. But in last 15-20 days chrome has started showing unexpected behavior. Whenever I start Chrome it freezes the System. I can access websites in chrome browser, but the System freezes. I have to open up task manager and end the process. I found one solution, however. If I start Firefox or IE prior to launching Chrome then it works just fine. After Chrome is launched even if I close Firefox/IE it works fine..

What may the problem? It is driving me mad.. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it twice, disabled many extensions and I don't even have many extensions. Please help me if anyone knows the solution.

Thanks!

So I've confirmed that it's not just my computer that has issues with quicktime playback in vista. If you have vista+firefox+adblock plus(extension)+quicktime, then you likely will not be able to play embedded quicktime videos (either crash browser or get illegal operations). If you disable the adblock plus in the "add ons", it works fine. Now I'm not sure if the problem is with the quicktime plugin or the adblock plus. For now I've disabled adblock plus and installed adblock instead, not as good, but at least it blocks the evil intellitxt with some configuration. Just thought I'd share what I found since I believe this is a common problem. If you want some quicktime to test your playback, go to apple.com/getamac and view some quicktime videos. I'm not sure if this combination always causes this issue, but it did on a new install of vista as well as on my machine. I know xp works fine when using ff+adblock plus to play quicktime. Any comments welcome to further discuss the cause or if you are having the same problem.

Answer:Confirmed Problem: Vista+Firefox+Adblock Plus+Quicktime= No Quicktime Video Playback

Vista64-Adblock-Adobe Flash

Read your report...I am not running Quicktime at this time, had the same fault and was gone when I dumped Adobe Flash, sounds like Adblock need to do some revisions.

Reports this week that Chrome has overtaken Firefox and is closing gap with I.E.
It appears that now Google is directing users to Chrome at the expense of Firefox who get a lot of their revenue from Google who in turn could turn this off gradually.
I have never used Chrome, what do you think about how it performs compared to the other two main players?

Answer:Media reports Chrome choking Firefox? Who uses Chrome?

IE for me any time. FF as a stanby browser. Rather use any other browser than Googles as they have enough info on my personal searches and email as it is.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is out as of today. I prepaid for it, and even bought a 20in WS LCD to replace my POS 19in 25ms LCD for the game.

Late last night, my PC died. Thats right, dead. I walked into the room to find it stuck on a stop error. So I rebooted. Stop error again. So I booted to Safe Mode. Stop error. I booted to a WinPE CD. Stop error. I ran memtest from a CD. A few hours later, I had accumulated a good oh...5 million some odd errors.

So I shut off the PC, and removed a stick of Ram. Turn the machine on and what do I see?

BIOS Checksum Bad. Starting Recovery...

So I put in the Asus CD, and it automatically reflashes the BIOS. Reboot. Same problem.

So I try the other ram stick. Not even a video response. Same in all slots. I tried other ram. Once again, nothing but the fans fired up.

So here I sit today, pondering just how cool Oblivion is, knowing I can't play it for at least two weeks while my RMAs(for the mb and ram) are being processed.

I hate computers.

http://www.techweb.com/wire/security/19300...LOSKH0CJUNN2JVNExploit code for an unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer is circulating, a security company said Friday, but the danger remains low as the current attack only crashes the browser. Fully-patched Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2000 SP4 systems are open to the new attack, said David Cole, director of Symantec's security response group. "This is proof-of-concept code, we haven't seen any active exploits," said Cole. "Whether it grows into something bigger is heavily linked to if it gets remote code execution [capabilities]," he added. Microsoft's advice, which included setting the "kill bit" for the ActiveX control to disable it. That, however, requires users to edit the Windows Registry, something many are unprepared to do. In the past, Microsoft's suggestions to set specific kill bits have been taken up by third-party researchers, who have cranked out automated tools for turning off the control. Another tactic, said Microsoft, is to disable all ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer from the dialog that appears after selecting Tools|Internet Options.

Answer:Another Reason To Use Firefox

I just got an alert about this from US_CERT (Cyber Security Alert SA06-258A). Potentially this is a serious problem:

"An attacker could exploit a vulnerability in an ActiveX control
by convincing a user to visit a web site with Internet
Explorer. The attacker could then take any action as the user,
including installing malicious software and accessing sensitive
personal information."

Their recommendation, until a patch is eventually issued, is to disable ActiveX, and to not follow any unsolicited links.

John

I have 4 browsers on my computer: Internet Explorer 8, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera. I am trying to listen to some MP3 files on a website, and all of the browsers, except for IE 8, told me to download the Realplayer Plugin. So I did, and when I tried to listen to the MP3 file, Realplayer will automatically enable this "Autoupdate Helper" thing and check for updates. So I let it check for updates, but then it'll say "There are no updates..." and just stop there. The file won't play! I click play again, and the same thing happens.

Internet Explorer is the only browser smart enough to open the MP3 files on the web page using Quicktime (the website actually tells you to use Quicktime to open the files) but it doesn't load the Youtube videos that are embedded on the site. There's a X on the top left corner of the section where the video is suppose to be.

Now I'm stuck! I want to view all the contents on one page with one browser! But none of the browsers will actually work properly!

So the main problem is:

1. The MP3 files won't load in Chrome, Firefox, and Opera using Quicktime.

Chrome is the only browser I use frequently, and the others are basically backup. IS THERE ANY SOLUTION TO THIS!?!?!?

Thanks everyone!

hi All, I use Firefox browser with W2k and have this problem often. I start browsing the web and after a while Firefox is using 100% of my CPU. So, I shut all my open pages down until my browser page is blank (my home page). Still the darn thing is using 100% CPU. so I wait an hour or two and come back and still it is at 100%. I know how to clear it up - just shut the browser and start it again. But why is it doing this? What is it trying to do? I've checked my Zonealarm and there is no internet traffic going either download or upload. So it's like having a car in the shed with the engine running on red-line but going nowhere, just sitting there.

Answer:Firefox using 100% CPU - no apparent reason

Try...1. Install FlashBlock plugin: http://flashblock.mozdev.org/ (this will fix issues if it's your flash content)Flashblock is an extension for the Mozilla, Firefox, and Netscape browsers that takes a pessimistic approach to dealing with Macromedia Flash content on a webpage and blocks ALL Flash content from loading. It then leaves placeholders on the webpage that allow you to click to download and then view the Flash content. 2. Disable Java (Java slows webpage load, it's terrible, javascript doesn't)In Preferences->Content menu uncheck Enable Java checkbox. If you need Java, update it, removing the old version.3. Restart Firefox (to take effect)4. If still hanging, disable SearchStatus extension if used.http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/archive/beware-of-searchstatus-firefox-extension/5. Ensure your firewall allows Firefox and it's not getting blocked.6. Check no extra add-on have been added to Firefox.

Hello!

OS: Vista home basic (have tried twice to download Service Pack 1 and both times it has gone through the whole rigmarole and then FAILED. Ugh.). Chrome browser.

I moved out of NYC to the boondocks. So, I am on dialup at home, and borrow WiFi at McDonald's & wherever else I can get it.

Was on WiFi last week and spending too much time "Resolving Host." Everything started with the long "resolving host" wait times.

Checked Chrome Extensions and found that three misspelled versions of something similar to "download keeper" had inserted extensions onto my Chrome (looking like "DoWnLoAd keeepEUR" or something like that, three different variations--since deleted). Also, an IP had been inserted in my hosts file, also immediately deleted.

Deleting those weird Extensions and cleaning up the Hosts file helped, but not entirely. So I read about disabling IPv6, and inserted FFFFFFFF into the appropriate place in the registry, which did not speed up my connection at all: still "resolving host" problems and unusually slow (now on dialup this week, and yes, dialup is slow, but, not like this).

So, yesterday connected to WiFi at the local library to go through the malware removal process recommended by majorgeeks (did it once before on this PC in 2010, and on a previous machine in 2006), and a few things were found yesterday--but I had to re-create my dial-up connection today after booting up the PC again--and ... I have all the above except avast (I use avg free) and have never had any problems regarding crashing because of them, other than re-setting the firewall.

Usually, crashes are caused by conflicts with extensions/themes and are usually resolved by uninstsalling recent installations then reinstalling them one at a time until you find the culprits at fault. Of course it could also be a corrupted profile due to the installation of dodgy extensions/themes.

If this were happening with just Firefox or Navigator (MozSuite browser) I'd suggest creating a new profile and if that works, fine, you then know it was the profile at fault, but if you have Navigator and Firefox crashing in similar ways then there must be some external factor(s) involved.

Can you confirm it is happening on both browsers? Have you installed extensions recently to both? Have you checked your firewall? Is it when you perform a particular task they crash?

Tech Support Guy,
About two days ago, I went onto the Internet using Firefox 3.0.5. A window appeared in front of me from admarketing.com. This was followed by several windows which were advertising media keyed to the keyword I had used recently in a search by Google on the Internet. I immediately thought that I had some malware on my computer and used AVGFree 8.0.176 to do a whole computer search. Nothing came up. I then thought that I might have something not covered by AVG. I searched the internet for Admarketing.com and found a method of removing it. It did not work. Then I was led to the Vundo virus as a possibility. I was able to download a program that eliminated it, but it did not stop the Adware. So I am wondering if my recent upgrade of Firefox might have led me to mark something that opens the door to Admarketing. I changed somethings in the options that seemed logical at the time but did not seem to relate to this.
I went back to Firefox and found some ad-ons that I turned on which were supposed to stop adware. They did not work.
I then thought of Hijack and so ran a scan in case you guys could find something in it which would show me what was wrong. This is really a bad one, each time I turn on Firefox and start a search, I get the list of the answer urls, then I get a new window within a few seconds with the admarketing url. Then this triggers multiple advertisements which follow each in its own version of Firefox.
Here is my Hijack scan:Logfile of Hijac... Read more

Answer:Firefox has adware popping up beyond reason

To add to the above thread, I was able to get the urls of 4 of the programs that pop up on my computer:

I believe that Admarketplace comes up first each time.

Also, my computer information is:

Hey all. I've reinstalled firefox a few times already, but for some reason it's freezing whenever I go to sites. I think it might have something to do with flash player, but I can't figure out where the problem is with it. I've uninstalled that too and reinstalled, without any help.

It also happens when I go to the options menu in the program.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Answer:firefox freezing for no apparent reason

try uninstalling flash from add/remove programs?
